- 6:23along as well. Up until this afternoon, I've been a real good boy.
- 6:27Who started it? I didn't, that's for sure. But keep myself
- 6:30clean ever since I came here from Chicago. How long you've been in town,
- 6:34you know, sergeant, you got it all down there, six years.
- 6:36I've been here. I'm all paid up back there. I'm an honest
- 6:40man. Now. What happened today, and there was nothing for you guys
- 6:44to come in on. There's just something personal between his friend of mine and
- 6:46me. Friend is in the hospital. He's got fourteen stitches across the top
- 6:50of his head. He's still unconscious. He's been unconscious for years. I'm
- 6:55sorry I hit him so hard, but he had it coming. Let me
- 6:57do all. He was playing snow see me and Sammy, that's his name,
- 7:01Sammy playing snooker on a lunch out for a long time. Now.
- 7:05Lately he's been yapping at me about my bald head all through the games.
- 7:10I could take the ribbon as good as the next guy, but he wouldn't
- 7:12let up. When he chalked up his skew and he made like he was
- 7:15gonna put my head in the corner pocket. I got sore. I wrapped
- 7:17him a good one with the pool cube. Okay, a sergeant did did
- 7:23they shave his head to put in them? Stitches? I imagine good.
- 7:27I wonder how he likes it being bald. Okay, step back, and
- 7:30I get sore all over again just thinking about I've been staying in line for
- 7:32six years in a boat head like that louses me. I'm sorry, but
- 7:36all right, I'm a four frank Castro open shot? What's cast doing?
- 7:43And that's what we'd like to know? You talk to you and not that
- 7:49we know him, And tell Pete to bring Castro up when he gets through
- 7:53the line. Here's Castro, Ben, Thanks, bean, I have a
- 8:11check Castro? What for? I'm in a hurry. Now you can spare
- 8:15a few minutes. You're getting old. I'll here. Thanks. You know
- 8:20got this is a waste of time. I got nothing to say to you.
- 8:22How are things in Indianapolis? Well, you tell me, I ain't
- 8:26been there for two months? And where have you been? Da Vegas?
- 8:30You any gun? Little made? What your salary would be for a couple
- 8:33of years? Seen Manelli lately? And why should I tell you? Because
- 8:39I asked you? Have you seen Manelli? No? You know where he
- 8:43is? No? You want him? Why don't you find him? I
- 8:46didn't say we wanted him, That's right, you didn't. How long.
- 8:50You're punning on staying in town. I don't know. I am, I'm
- 8:54on a vacation. Might move here. We don't want you here, Castro.
- 8:58I didn't ask you long. I keep clean. I don't even have
- 9:01to say hello to you. That's right, Castro. As long as you
- 9:07keep clean, I'll let you and me get a few things straight. Got
- 9:09three. I got enough time in Indiana. I don't plan on getting sent
- 9:13up here. I'm straight now. I don't care if you're believe it or
- 9:16not. As far as you're concerned, I'm just a plain citizen. I
- 9:20got a paper that says I'm paid up. When I get out of line.
- 9:24You come after me, but be sure it's me that's out of line
- 9:26when you come. I don't like you, Gotri, I never have,
- 9:31so don't start pushing me around. I'm impressed, Castro. That's practically the
- 9:39same speech you made five years ago. Now you get this straight. Guys
- 9:43like you never have scared me. You get out of line just once,
- 9:48and you've had it. The stunnel is in pretty good shape, and you
- 9:52and nobody else is going to get a chance to start operating if I have
- 9:56anything to do with it. You'll be put away for a lot longer than
- 10:00five years. Next time I'm tired, gut three, I'm going to find
- 10:03myself a hotel down by the beach where the air is good. Stinks around
- 10:09here, Sit on Castro. I'm not froue with him, Lieutenant Guthrie,
- 10:13Client Ben, I'm in communications. What again? Just got an answer from
- 10:16Indianapolis. Castro is clean there? Okay, thanks, get our Castro.
- 10:35Oh you really ought to go with us, Ben? Do you good?
- 10:37Oh? Pete? You know I never did like picnics last year? And
- 10:39his family you're gone lots of fried chicken potato salad. That part sounds good.
- 10:45Hey, even if you don't like picnics, the food's worth it.
- 10:48I suppose I'll let you know. Pen, I hope you can make it.
- 10:50And maybe, oh, anything new on the younger case, I still
- 10:58at that. And the quin's running a check and the building employees, now,
- 11:03whoever pulled it must have had help from the inside. Everything went off
- 11:07too smooth. And when they start to pedal the stuff, they'll be wide
- 11:09open. And we hope run some coffee. Oh, I think so Castro
- 11:16been behaving himself. Sure, he always does. For a while you know
- 11:20where he is. No, and we finally get a line on Manelli.
- 11:24We know where he's living. Hi bad al hikin. He's a report on
- 11:28the employees and the younger kid. Huh anything, Hi doubts the channey Arn
- 11:33Harrison. He's got a record served two years on a burglary charge in Indiana.
- 11:35That's where Castro and Manelli are from. This sort of thing is out
- 11:39of their line. They're not stick up man. He checked with the building
- 11:41superintendent. Harrison's been a good employee. He's worked there three years. Did
- 11:46you talk to Harrison? No, I thought you'd want to. How old
- 11:48is he? Sixty three? Superintendent swears by him. He said he knew
- 11:52about his record, but he was convinced he was. Okay, Well,
- 11:54I won't do any harm to talk with him when I haven't picked up.
- 11:58No, let's go for a ride thing. Kah oh oh, hello,
- 12:18and mister Harrison. Uh huh, I'm Lieutenant Guthrie. This Sergeant Cargan.
- 12:22Oh, how do you do you want to come in? Thank? You
- 12:31sit down here, I'll get that paper there. Hell, I'm glad you
- 12:35came by. Now the wife isn't home. You want a beer? No?
- 12:41No thanks. Okay, you fellows are working on that younger cage,
- 12:46aren't you. I figured somebody to be around. I got a record,
- 12:50and that's as good a place as anywhere to start on. I want somebody
- 12:54has a wreckage, fellas, never let us forget it. Oh, don't
- 12:58get me wrong. I don't blame you, man. I do the same
- 13:01thing of Harshu. Oh it's not only you. All the employees are being
- 13:03checked, mister Harrison. Oh sure, I know you know it's your job
- 13:07to do this, you know mister Younger, Yes, I know him.
- 13:09I never figured him for a guy with that much in diamonds laying around.
- 13:13Oh, he has a good business going there, but I didn't know it
- 13:18was that good. At what hours do you work? One to nine?
- 13:20I was here at home when it happened. We don't think you robbed mister
- 13:24Younger, but we do think whoever did had help from the ensign. Well,
- 13:28it could be. All I'm interested in is being left alone, keep
- 13:33him a job. If you didn't have anything to do with this, there's
- 13:35nothing to worry about. Harrison. Yeah. Well, of course, I'm
- 13:37not a young man anymore, and it's kind of tough to get started,
- 13:41but I was lucky. I got a good, steady job. We just
- 13:45bought this house here last year. The wife's been working and we're paying it
- 13:48off as fast we can. We're saving every extra nickel we can get a
- 13:52hands on. But kind of late to be starting in like this, but
- 13:56in a few more years we'll be Okay. You ever run into anybody out
- 13:58here? You did? I'm with back in Indiana. M Well, no,
- 14:03who, No, nobody would pull a job like this. Did you
- 14:05ever know Frank Castro or Anthony Minnelli back there? Yeah? Yeah, yes,
- 14:13yes you did. They was doing time when I was. I never
- 14:18knew him very well. I got up before they did. They're both in
- 14:22town now. You haven't seen him. There's no use lying here. I
- 14:28suppose you'd find out anyway if you wanted, Yes, home both a couple
- 14:35of weeks ago. I want to send out a pickup on Manelli. If
- 14:46he isn't home, we will. No, it still doesn't fake in.
- 14:50This sort of thing is out of both Manelli's and Castro's line. Could be
- 14:54there broke, oh maybe one two and two and two one there there it
- 14:58is. Minelli is not very broke living in a place like this. No,
- 15:09let's see Lee Kimball Manelli one oh seven? Ben? Hello, got
- 15:26three? Hello? Remember Sigean Cargo? Yeah? Sure, I want to
- 15:31talk to him. It's a pinch. No, that's good, okay,
- 15:35come on, sit on, I want to drink. No thanks. Castor
- 15:43is telling me you and him had a run in, Lieutenant, you might
- 15:46call it that. I don't pay too much attention to Frank. He flies
- 15:48off the handle once nowhere. No, No, have you seen him?
- 15:52No? Not for about a week. And where is he? Should?
- 15:54I know he don't live with me. What are you doing for a living?
- 15:58Nothing? How do you pay your rent? Frank? Lent me some
- 16:00money? Why? I just wondered, Well, it looks like I might
- 16:03have to go to work. You know you guys that helped me rehabilitate myself.
- 16:10You know, Vern Harrison, Vern Harrison. Where's he from Indiana?
- 16:15H Harrison? No, I don't think so. What did he do nothing
- 16:19recently that we know of? Be sure you don't know him. I don't
- 16:22know him by name or min if I seen him, Frank may know.
- 16:26I know a lot of guys I've seeing him, but I don't know the
- 16:27names. You know, how they Yeah, I know he knows human and
- 16:32he that could be he said he talked to you a couple of weeks ago,
- 16:34so maybe he did. I don't remember his name. I ain't saying
- 16:38that I know him, But what if I do? What's so important about
- 16:41him? He's a janitor in the building where younger was held up. Oh
- 16:44yeah, yeah, it's some of the papers about it. And I'll wait
- 16:48a minute. You're trying to tie me in, frank In with that Harrison
- 16:52guy and a stick it maybe are you ribbing me or something? What night
- 16:56was young and held up? I didn't say it was at night? The
- 17:00paper did? It was four nights ago. I was with a girl I
- 17:04know, Francis longword sixteen forty fort East Blake, Apartment three. You can
- 17:08check with her, we will? You better come along with us? Minelli?
- 17:12What for? Hey? I thought you said this wasn't a pinch.
- 17:15I wasn't sure it would be. As soon as he regained consciousness, he
- 17:30asked for you, Ben. When was he brought in to two hours ago?
- 17:33It's in pretty bad shape, skull fracture, cuts, some bruises.
- 17:37Who found him? His wife? I guess she's been around here, but
- 17:41you better not stay too long, mister Harrison. Mister Harrison, mister Harrison.
- 17:52I don't know then, mister Harrison. Oh, hello, Tenny,
- 18:00I got to talk to you. Yes, I after you left me,
- 18:06he came to see me. Who I told him? I didn't say anything.
- 18:12Who came to see you? I just wanted had been left alone.
- 18:17He said he'd kill me. I'm too old for frightening. I told him.
- 18:25They didn't tell him anything. Who was it, mister Harrison. I
- 18:30met him like I told Jordie only I told him where I work, about
- 18:37younger and they threatened me. Then, Yes, I don't know where Manelli
- 18:45was. He meant to kill me. He said he'd make sure he kept
- 18:52quiet. Castro Castro castro beat you up. Yes, that's all I had
- 19:03to do. Ah, I was home. He should have told maybe that.
- 19:14Oh it's enough for now. Then, okay, you're missus Harrison.
- 19:25We're doing everything that can be done. He's tried. But here here,
- 19:32Missus Harrison. Oh, thank you. I'll be all right. If you
- 19:37could answer a few questions, I'd appreciate it. Missus Harrison. I'm Lieutenant
- 19:40Guthrie. All right, it will help any But tell me, did you
- 19:45see anybody leave your house. I just came home from work in there.
- 19:51Vern What did he tell you anything? Then he was unconscious. I called
- 19:56the ambulance. Ver never that enemy, mister Harrison never mentioned anyone by the
- 20:03name of Castro Manali to you A couple of weeks ago. He did.
- 20:07I told him he'd better not have anything to do with him. Burn knew
- 20:12him back home. Yes, I know they did this to Verne. Your
- 20:18husband told me one of them, did Castro. I don't know them.
- 20:22RN told me he'd seen them at the wrestling matches. I told Vernon,
- 20:26then, is there anyone you'd like me to call? No? Can I
- 20:36see? I don't think you're better right now. He's got a sister in
- 20:41Missouri. I should call her, but I can't now. Yeah, I
- 20:48don't know what to do. We don't have anything those men would want.
- 20:55Why didn't they leave us alone? Ah that Francis Longworth sticks with her story.
- 21:11Ben Eli was with her all evening. They didn't go anywhere, stayed
- 21:12home and watch television. Anyone to substantiate her story? No, I check
- 21:17with other people in the building. Nobody saw Manelli come in or leave.
- 21:19How long do you stay? Well? About one in the mornings, She
- 21:22said, you can always buy that kind of an alibi. We'll see what
- 21:27Monelly has to say about Harrison now, I'll bring him in. Coin,
- 21:33you should have run both of them out of town. And if only it
- 21:36were that easy. Thanks sit down, Sure might as well stick around.
- 21:42Coin. It's one of your guys that's got the rubber hose. Why don't
- 21:48you level with us? Manelli? Okay, what do you want to know?
- 21:51West Castro? I don't know where were you on the night younger was
- 21:52held up with my girlfriend? I told you you can check with her.
- 21:56We did. I just came from there, so all she knows her story,
- 21:59what she supports to do live. That's the trouble. I think she
- 22:02did. You don't think I was there. I say I was. I
- 22:04got a witness. What do you got? What did you do all evening?
- 22:08I told you once I'd like to hear it. You never told me.
- 22:11That's tough. We have lots of time in Ali. I got over
- 22:18to friend's house about it. If you have dinner at her place, no
- 22:21where, what difference does it make? Where the open door over on aling?
- 22:26When did you leave there? About seven thirty? He went straight to
- 22:30Miss Longworts place from there? Yeah, what did you do all evening?
- 22:33Watch television and talk? Did you have anything to drink? I had a
- 22:36couple, a couple of one. I had a couple of beers. What'd
- 22:38you talk about? Oh, come on now, fellas, I don't know
- 22:44what we talked about. We just talked. What time you leave her apartment?
- 22:48About one thirty? I guess you went to your apartment? Sure this
- 22:52time? And the other place to go? You haven't any idea where we
- 22:55can find Castro? No? Where'd you see him last? At a restaurant,
- 22:59the Salana? How long ago is this? About? Three weeks?
- 23:03Is that when you borrow the money? Yeah? How much did you borrow?
- 23:07Seven hundred dollars? You had six hundred on you? All right?
- 23:10So I had six hundred when you picked me up. You lived three weeks
- 23:12and one hundred dollars. I got lucky at the track. Where did Castro
- 23:17get his money? I don't know where he got his money? Why don't
- 23:18you ask him? Tell us where he is and we will. I told
- 23:23you I don't know where he is. Where's your girlfriend from? I don't
- 23:26know where she's from. How long you know her? I knew we're back
- 23:30east I long ago, about seven years ago. I guess. I don't
- 23:33know for sure. Does Castro know anyone else in town? I don't know.

- 24:22old, five ft seven hundred and fifty five pounds, slightly bald, gray
- 24:26hair. He did time with you and Castro back in the d I know
- 24:29you told me. Remember look, do your mind if I have a drink
- 24:32of water? No, okay, Harrison is dead? So what Castro beat
- 24:37him? Have killed him? Get cast or? Don't tell me about Harrison
- 24:42told me about meeting you and Castro at the wrestling matches, that he gave
- 24:45you information about younger. Castro was afraid Harrison would talk and took it on
- 24:51himself to shut him up? Where is he? Manelli? What good'll it
- 24:59do me? I had to get some kind of a break. Twenty five
- 25:03or nine East Hendrick Apartment two or three sixty seven, five oh seven?

- 26:30he talked before he died. Oh, go ahead and make a break.
- 26:37Frankly, I'd like you to. He couldn't have talked. He didn't
- 26:42get us clothes. Speat, you're thirty five, Castro. Harrison was sixty
- 26:49three. You're really tough. It was Manelli's fault. Head broke, he
- 26:56said, if we did something out of our line, it'd work. Yeah,
- 27:00it's a large combination. Castro, he's stupid and you're a coward.

- 27:52Please be prompt with your questions or identifications. When the prisoners leave here,
- 27:56they're center of the bathroom. When the prisoners leave here, they're center the
- 28:00washroom and dressed back into the jail clothes. It makes it quite difficult to
- 28:03bring them back after they leave here. Hey, I have your attention,
- 28:11pleasing you people out there on the other side of the wire in the audience
- 28:15room, may I have your attention? Please, thank you. My name

- 28:48It makes it quite difficult to bring them back after they leave it. Welcome
- 28:53mack Well. It definitely makes you appreciate the music and other elements. They
- 29:02seem to be a bit more bare bones in what they play during rehearsal as
- 29:07opposed to yours, truly. Johnny Doller, other than that, I thought
- 29:10it was a good case. Definitely would love to hear the version with music.
- 29:15Okay, Katie, we have a listener comment from Katie who says,
- 29:18I love your podcast in the app I've been listening for over a year and
- 29:22wanted to be come an old friend through my habit of listening while I do
- 29:26my housework. Thanks for the enthusiasm and effort you put into this. I
- 29:30wanted to comment on the Lineup program. I seem to hear Howard mcnear's voice
- 29:34on almost every episode as one of the men in the Lineup. Do you
- 29:38know if this is true? And if so, why would he agree to
- 29:41be in so many episodes with Jester line or two. He's one of my
- 29:45favorite old time radio and TV actors, and I'm curious about his career and
- 29:49personal life. Well, thanks so much. I don't have a specific information,
- 29:56but it's not too hard to guess on something like this. The best
- 30:00answer that I can find on this, Katie, is that it's really about
- 30:04the union scale, particularly when you get into nineteen fifty two and fifty three,
- 30:11there were a lot of those actors who were working in radio in ever
- 30:18increasing number. We're working for scale rates, and so the more programs you
- 30:23can appear in, the better. And usually when he's in the lineup,
- 30:27he's also in the program in some other role or capacity. I've heard a
- 30:33couple episodes where Howard mcneer does doubles. I don't believe that leads to any
- 30:37additional pay, but good steady work in radio in a time when radio was
- 30:45in decline, that was certainly a reason to keep coming back for the lineup,
- 30:49regardless of whether the part was big or small. All right, well,
- 30:56we're going to sign off in a second. I do want to encourage
- 30:59you. You can to support the show's listener support campaign at support dot Great
- 31:03Detectives dot net. And we are going to be getting to Dragnet later on
- 31:10this season, and we have some Dragnet related thank you gifts for US and
