- 0:00Speaker 1: Good to be back in the studio.
- 0:01Speaker 2: The producer, of course, is Cameron d Park of the
- 0:03Speaker 2: d On The birth certificate stands for Dallas as in
- 0:05Speaker 2: big name for his favorite pro football team. Who's been
- 0:08Speaker 2: kind of quiet of late, but when it comes to
- 0:11Speaker 2: free agency stuff, they're usually pretty quiet anyway. Do not
- 0:15Speaker 2: ask me when the last time I was in the studio.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I might be at a loss to be able to
- 0:20Speaker 2: remember the exact date that.
- 0:22Speaker 3: I was in there.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's been a bit a while, a couple of weeks,
- 0:25Speaker 2: maybe a couple of weeks.
- 0:27Speaker 4: At least, and the two of us in the studio together.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Maybe longer, maybe close to a month because of when
- 0:35Speaker 2: you were out when I was out on the road.
- 0:40Speaker 4: But no matter, probably has to be early February. I
- 0:44Speaker 4: think early February.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Wow.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Really then yeah?
- 0:47Speaker 3: Wow?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Okay, Well, could be back in the house. Yeah, And
- 0:53Speaker 2: it's a yacht rock Wednesday, so we bring you some
- 0:55Speaker 2: yacht rock return cuts.
- 0:56Speaker 5: We do that.
- 0:58Speaker 4: We've got a lot of things to get to on
- 0:59Speaker 4: the program today.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Obviously, we spent a lot of time yesterday, even though
- 1:02Speaker 2: it was out of the ballpark at UFC, just farg
- 1:05Speaker 2: Field and previewing the Texas Sham Houston game, which was
- 1:09Speaker 2: run ruled.
- 1:09Speaker 4: The Long Orange won that one thirteen to three.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But we spent a lot of time talking about the
- 1:15Speaker 2: new hire for the University of Texas, Sean Millers, the
- 1:19Speaker 2: new men's basketball coach. There was some talk obviously about
- 1:24Speaker 2: the women Texas women's team, which leaves tomorrow, and again
- 1:29Speaker 2: we're one day here in the studio and then Cam
- 1:31Speaker 2: and I'll be out tomorrow back on the plane wing
- 1:34Speaker 2: to Birmingham. Do we have the zimbel hours tomorrow.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Tomorrow, Friday, and then Craig. If they have a good
- 1:41Speaker 4: trip in Birmingham and win both games, you go straight
- 1:44Speaker 4: to Florida. I'll come back Tuesday or Wednesday. So this
- 1:48Speaker 4: could be our last show in the studio together for
- 1:51Speaker 4: a few days.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what Cam is referring to when we were
- 1:56Speaker 2: told this yesterday that if the Texas women win their
- 2:02Speaker 2: two games Saturday afternoon at two thirty in the Sweet sixteen,
- 2:07Speaker 2: they play Tennessee, you can hear it right here on
- 2:10Speaker 2: thirteen under the zone. We'll bring you the women's game Saturday.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Because Long Worn Baseball will shift over to one oh
- 2:16Speaker 2: three point one FM. They'll flip flop spots. The reason
- 2:20Speaker 2: for that is because the long Horn Baseball game doesn't
- 2:23Speaker 2: start until four o'clock on Saturday, and this is the
- 2:26Speaker 2: first weekend for Round Rock Express Baseball. And then what
- 2:29Speaker 2: the Express played what six o'clock? I believe something like
- 2:32Speaker 2: that on Friday Saturday Saturday. I think it's about six
- 2:38Speaker 2: fifty okay, okay, so it would be an overlap.
- 2:43Speaker 4: So the point is at all this so it's it's
- 2:47Speaker 4: going to be a switch.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And so the Texas women's games in Birmingham Sweet sixteen
- 2:53Speaker 2: Saturday afternoon against Tennessee and if they advance to the
- 2:55Speaker 2: Elite eight on Monday night at six o'clock, both of
- 2:59Speaker 2: those games would be here on thirteen under the zone
- 3:02Speaker 2: long Worn Baseball. Throughout the course of the weekend Friday,
- 3:05Speaker 2: Saturday and Sunday, all three of those games in Columbia
- 3:09Speaker 2: will be on one of three point ONEFM and CAM.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I do want and mean to call it to your attention.
- 3:15Speaker 2: There is some discussion about a possible Saturday doubleheader. They're
- 3:18Speaker 2: very worried about rain on Sunday in Columbia. We've had
- 3:21Speaker 2: a couple of times with Startville with no game Saturday
- 3:29Speaker 2: in a doubleheader Sunday.
- 3:30Speaker 4: And then the home opener was canceled against Houston. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 4: I remember whether having this big of an impact. I mean,
- 3:36Speaker 4: of course, you probably no better than I do, but
- 3:38Speaker 4: it was like, man, the war can't get a three
- 3:41Speaker 4: D game weekend to save alive.
- 3:43Speaker 2: The worst I can remember of all of these types
- 3:46Speaker 2: of things was it was either the last year that
- 3:49Speaker 2: Augie Gurta was the coach or the year before it.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It was either twenty fifteen or twenty sixteen. They were
- 3:56Speaker 2: playing a weekend series at Kansas and we got let's see,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm trying to think if they got some of the
- 4:06Speaker 2: game in on Friday and we got the whole game
- 4:11Speaker 2: in on Friday, I guess it was. And then they
- 4:13Speaker 2: were going to do a doubleheader on Saturday because they
- 4:15Speaker 2: were worried about the rain.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And then they said.
- 4:17Speaker 2: We got to the ballpark and they were getting ready
- 4:20Speaker 2: to go and then they went no, we're not playing.
- 4:22Speaker 2: We're like what, And then we'll go back to the
- 4:25Speaker 2: hotel and then we get word no, no, no, we are playing.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Came back and then played the game Saturday and played
- 4:31Speaker 2: against It was crazy and it was off and on
- 4:32Speaker 2: rain and things like that, so it does happen, but
- 4:35Speaker 2: in any event, so they have the Long Worn Baseball
- 4:42Speaker 2: team has games scheduled for Columbia, Missouri to play Miszoo
- 4:48Speaker 2: on Friday evening at six, Saturday afternoon at four, Sunday
- 4:53Speaker 2: afternoon at one, and however the configuration ultimately turns out
- 4:58Speaker 2: if they do out of concern for the possibility of
- 5:03Speaker 2: a rain out on Sunday, go ahead and decide to
- 5:06Speaker 2: play a Saturday doublehead or whatever the configuration is. You'll
- 5:09Speaker 2: hear those games on one oh three point one FM,
- 5:11Speaker 2: and then of course you can connect to it through
- 5:14Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app. And you know it's on the Texas
- 5:17Speaker 2: long Wrns app, so you'll be able to hear it
- 5:21Speaker 2: through through apps and online at Texas Longhorns dot com,
- 5:26Speaker 2: so you'll be able to get the games. But for
- 5:28Speaker 2: radio purposes it'll be on one of three point one FM.
- 5:31Speaker 2: The Texas Women will be Saturday and then Monday off
- 5:35Speaker 2: of that Round Rock Express Friday night, Saturday night, and
- 5:38Speaker 2: then on Sunday.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Now here's the other thing.
- 5:45Speaker 2: If if the Texas Women do win their Sweet sixteen
- 5:49Speaker 2: game on Saturday afternoon, they would play in the Elite
- 5:54Speaker 2: eight against either Notre Dame or TCU on Monday evening
- 5:58Speaker 2: at six if they should win both games, when the
- 6:01Speaker 2: Saturday game over Tennessee and then the Monday game against
- 6:04Speaker 2: the TCU Notre Dame winner. If they win both of
- 6:07Speaker 2: those games, they qualify for the Final Four. The NCAA
- 6:12Speaker 2: has mandated that all of their teams have to be
- 6:16Speaker 2: in by Tuesday night. So Texas, instead of coming home
- 6:23Speaker 2: after the game Monday night, has been told by the NCAAA,
- 6:27Speaker 2: just go on to Tampa, so it would stay Monday
- 6:32Speaker 2: night in Birmingham and then just go down to Tampa
- 6:34Speaker 2: on Tuesday and then have some practices down there before
- 6:38Speaker 2: they have the game, which in the Final Four would
- 6:42Speaker 2: be on Friday night. So that's what Cameron was referring
- 6:45Speaker 2: to about saying that it might be gone for ten
- 6:48Speaker 2: to eleven days if it turns out that way.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Makes it difficult for packing.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Purposes, Yeah, no doubt for you. I mean, yeah, I mean,
- 6:58Speaker 4: and do you bring a swimsuit like I mean, you're
- 7:00Speaker 4: to be in Tampa. It's gon't be good weather. I
- 7:02Speaker 4: hadn't even thought about that kind of stuff, but who knows.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Anyway, All right, coming up on the program this afternoon,
- 7:09Speaker 2: we'll recap the long run baseball game from last name.
- 7:13Speaker 2: We're closing in on Sweet sixteen for men. Starting tomorrow,
- 7:17Speaker 2: we'll talk about that. We have inconceivable this hour that
- 7:22Speaker 2: that will come your way. Three o'clock hour, we'll talk
- 7:27Speaker 2: major League Baseball. Opening Day is tomorrow, and since we're
- 7:31Speaker 2: traveling tomorrow, I couldn't wear a Dodger shirt tomorrow, so.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I'm wearing it. You can wear a Dodger shirt.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Why not?
- 7:38Speaker 2: I just feel like a better repetic girls and the
- 7:41Speaker 2: team where are like in their pajamas that they were
- 7:44Speaker 2: all kinds of but it's burn are a lot of that.
- 7:46Speaker 4: It's true. So if you wear your Dodger jersey, I'll
- 7:51Speaker 4: wear my Cory cigaretus.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Actually, what I should have worn.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I should have worn the Dodger jersey today and then
- 7:57Speaker 2: just wear the polo tomorrow. That's what it should have done.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I didn't think it threw. I just grabbed his shirt anyway.
- 8:03Speaker 2: So Opening day is tomorrow. Geene Watson from the Chicago
- 8:07Speaker 2: White Sox front office joins us as he does every week,
- 8:09Speaker 2: to talk Major League Baseball. He'll join us in the
- 8:11Speaker 2: three o'clock hour. Here we are on the verge of
- 8:14Speaker 2: the real opening down. I know the Dodgers and Gumps
- 8:17Speaker 2: played two games in Japan, and you know the Dodgers
- 8:19Speaker 2: won both those games. They got Mookie Betts back in
- 8:21Speaker 2: the lineup last night after he had all that intestinalation.
- 8:25Speaker 2: He says he feels fine now. He lost fifteen pounds,
- 8:29Speaker 2: just could not keep any food down. And that was
- 8:31Speaker 2: before the team went to Japan. It wasn't like, oh
- 8:34Speaker 2: I got a hold of some bad sushi or something. No,
- 8:37Speaker 2: it was before they even left the US when that happened.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So he went over there with him at first and
- 8:41Speaker 2: was so sick they just sent him home.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But he did play last night.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I think he went out for three in the exhibition
- 8:46Speaker 2: finale against the Angels, and it was good to see
- 8:50Speaker 2: Dustin May on the mound, big old ging out there
- 8:52Speaker 2: throwing again, coming off Tommy John surgery. So we'll talk
- 8:57Speaker 2: major League Baseball with Jeene Watson in the three o'clock
- 8:59Speaker 2: out four o'clock hour, we shift college baseball and talk
- 9:04Speaker 2: about that with Ty Harrington, our contributor and broadcast compadre.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So we'll talk from college baseball. But as always, we're
- 9:12Speaker 2: responsive to your text, your questions, your thoughts, your comments,
- 9:17Speaker 2: and you can avail yourself of us in either of
- 9:21Speaker 2: two ways. One, we have the text line that's always
- 9:23Speaker 2: open for you. All you have to do is you
- 9:25Speaker 2: text the word Texas followed by your question or comment
- 9:29Speaker 2: to eight one five three zero, So you text the
- 9:32Speaker 2: word Texas and then hey, I thought they were going
- 9:35Speaker 2: to dolah blah blah or whatever to eight one five
- 9:38Speaker 2: three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 9:41Speaker 1: So there's that.
- 9:42Speaker 2: The other way you can do it is through a
- 9:44Speaker 2: talk back feature if you have the iHeartRadio, the brand
- 9:46Speaker 2: new iHeartRadio app downloaded on your phone. Really easy to do,
- 9:50Speaker 2: it's free. All you have to do then is search
- 9:53Speaker 2: AM thirteen under the zone. It'll pop right up, and
- 9:56Speaker 2: then there's two buttons on it. One is like a
- 9:57Speaker 2: little white arrow that's to listen to what's going on
- 9:59Speaker 2: the at the moment. There's another one that's a red
- 10:02Speaker 2: button that's got a little white microphone in it. You
- 10:04Speaker 2: push that button and you can leave us a voice
- 10:06Speaker 2: message up to thirty seconds and keep it clean. It
- 10:10Speaker 2: is a family program of sorts, but we'll even put
- 10:14Speaker 2: it on the air so you can avail yourselves of
- 10:17Speaker 2: this program. And us either of two ways, either the
- 10:21Speaker 2: text line or also on the talk back feature. All right,
- 10:26Speaker 2: coming up a recap of the long Horn baseball and
- 10:31Speaker 2: we'll talk a little bit about it at first. Where
- 10:34Speaker 2: the long Oarns are in the grand scheme of all that.
- 10:36Speaker 2: But we've got a lot to get to. There is
- 10:38Speaker 2: after all football spring practice going on. There was pro
- 10:40Speaker 2: timing day yesterday, there's basketball to get to the floor.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Is yours as well?
- 10:46Speaker 2: To contact us with your questions here on Wednesday afternoon
- 10:49Speaker 2: on thirteen under the zone. Long Horns were not fools
- 10:52Speaker 2: last night They won run ruled Sam Houston thirteen to
- 10:55Speaker 2: three was the final. They hit three home runs in
- 10:58Speaker 2: the game. Two went into the Yetti yard, won by
- 11:01Speaker 2: Jalen Flores to give him the four to one league.
- 11:03Speaker 2: When they scored four runs in the third inning. Then
- 11:07Speaker 2: uh Adrian Rodriguez hit his fifth home run. The magic
- 11:11Speaker 2: number was five last night. Jalen Flors hit his fifth,
- 11:15Speaker 2: Adrian Rodriguez hit his fifth, Will Gasparino hit his fifth.
- 11:19Speaker 4: All hit their fifth home runs of the season last night.
- 11:23Speaker 2: A designated start for Kate Being who went four innings
- 11:26Speaker 2: and got the win, and Jason Flores and Aiden Moffatt
- 11:31Speaker 2: got out there and got a chance to show what
- 11:33Speaker 2: he could do. You got to strike out on five pitches,
- 11:35Speaker 2: which was good because Moffitt had only had one other
- 11:41Speaker 2: appearance at the transfer and he had given up a
- 11:47Speaker 2: run without getting an out. And you know what that means,
- 11:51Speaker 2: cam when you give up run or runs and you
- 11:55Speaker 2: don't record it out and you leave the game. You
- 11:57Speaker 2: know what your eer is?
- 11:59Speaker 4: Ninety nine?
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, well they put ninety nine, but it's infinity really
- 12:03Speaker 2: because there's no way to measure it because you didn't
- 12:05Speaker 2: record it out. So they put ninety nine on there.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But he dropped it from infinity to twenty seven.
- 12:11Speaker 4: That's good.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So it was a big jomb that's good for
- 12:14Speaker 2: for Aiden Moffatt last night. So the Long Words got
- 12:17Speaker 2: to win there now twenty and three and after the game,
- 12:21Speaker 2: our Keith Mortal was down on the field first with
- 12:24Speaker 2: head coach Jim Schlasnagel ended.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Up stands three and two of the homestand he had
- 12:29Speaker 6: to come back in the two days.
- 12:30Speaker 7: But it was nice to see guys come out today.
- 12:32Speaker 6: I thought they were really good quality at bats early
- 12:35Speaker 6: in the game.
- 12:35Speaker 7: Start to set the tone of the ball games.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it really did.
- 12:38Speaker 8: Flora's's homer, you know, stretched the lead, Bang was stowing strikes.
- 12:42Speaker 8: They're super aggressive at home play. He was, he was
- 12:45Speaker 8: throwing strikes. They were getting some hits. But I thought
- 12:48Speaker 8: Flora's homer was really good. And again we did we
- 12:51Speaker 8: put together bats, but a good hit and run ended
- 12:53Speaker 8: up being a triples. A lot of good things tonight.
- 12:56Speaker 8: Flora's were getting him in the game. Aiden Moffitt was outstanding.
- 12:59Speaker 8: He's been he's he's been doing that in practice. He's
- 13:02Speaker 8: been throwing strikes, so we wanted to get him in
- 13:04Speaker 8: the game. That was kind of the perfect scenario. And
- 13:06Speaker 8: and then to get Matt Scott and and showing their
- 13:09Speaker 8: first college at bats.
- 13:10Speaker 1: It's always great.
- 13:10Speaker 7: Yeah, that is always fun. But that's where I was
- 13:12Speaker 7: gonna go.
- 13:13Speaker 6: I thought, being you, you said in pregame, seas, I'd
- 13:15Speaker 6: love the game two four.
- 13:16Speaker 1: See what he looks like.
- 13:17Speaker 8: I thought he was really good in the strike zone. Yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 8: I mean, he's just what you want on Tuesday, right.
- 13:21Speaker 8: I mean, you hope that at some point the stuff
- 13:24Speaker 8: takes a little bit of a jump. But the first
- 13:26Speaker 8: game of the season, we're excited about him throwing ninety
- 13:30Speaker 8: four but he's doing right and the guys we're in
- 13:31Speaker 8: on the first bit, so you can't right now, you
- 13:33Speaker 8: can't have your cake and eat it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Too, I guess.
- 13:35Speaker 6: But he's he he did exactly what we.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Needed him to do tonight.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Now I'm gonna go on the road again the second
- 13:40Speaker 6: time in the SEC.
- 13:41Speaker 7: Doesn't matter what the records is. When you go on
- 13:43Speaker 7: the on the road to the SEC.
- 13:45Speaker 5: No.
- 13:45Speaker 8: And there's a lot of challenges, you know in Columbia.
- 13:47Speaker 8: I've never been there personally, but I've watched the games
- 13:50Speaker 8: and I've heard all the stories about you know there
- 13:54Speaker 8: the weather and uh, you know this's you're it's a
- 13:57Speaker 8: it's a mental challenge in the opposite direction in terms
- 13:59Speaker 8: of you're playing a good team, you're playing an SEC team. Crowd,
- 14:03Speaker 8: atmosphere different than what we're used to, so we're going
- 14:06Speaker 8: to have to create kind of our own energy and
- 14:08Speaker 8: do well. The weather's not supposed to be great. I
- 14:09Speaker 8: don't think we could be playing two saturdays. So we
- 14:11Speaker 8: got a couple good days of practice and you ready
- 14:13Speaker 8: to go.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, So there it is from Jim Schlastnagle. That's Keith
- 14:18Speaker 2: and I were both a little bit surprised he never
- 14:20Speaker 2: He never took a team to Columbia, Missouri, and of
- 14:24Speaker 2: course when he was coaching, when he started coaching the
- 14:26Speaker 2: Big Twelve, then they didn't have a trip to Columbia
- 14:31Speaker 2: before Missouri left the league for the for the SEC,
- 14:35Speaker 2: and he never took one of his UNLV teams there,
- 14:37Speaker 2: so he hadn't been to Columbia before. That's how I
- 14:40Speaker 2: was saying to Keith. Well, Keith was saying, it's it's
- 14:43Speaker 2: a home run hitters ballpark. It's a friendly, at least
- 14:46Speaker 2: it was the last time Texas played there, and I
- 14:47Speaker 2: said yes. And they still have the indoor football practice
- 14:50Speaker 2: facility beyond the right field wall and even have a
- 14:54Speaker 2: four to twenty sign up well up elevated up on
- 14:59Speaker 2: the roof right near where the dome part of the
- 15:03Speaker 2: roof meets the side wall. Beyond the right filled wall
- 15:06Speaker 2: in bright yellow. There's a four to twenty side there.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Some logorns have not hit that side exactly. They've hit
- 15:13Speaker 2: that facility before in the past, you know, launching one there.
- 15:17Speaker 2: It's I remember Dustin Maeski hitting one up there. Left
- 15:21Speaker 2: handed hitters with power. I mean, this has Max Blue
- 15:24Speaker 2: written all over it. If there's one in on him
- 15:26Speaker 2: and he turns on one like that. He could crush
- 15:28Speaker 2: one out there like that, so they'll be there now.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Speaking of home runs, I mentioned it was the fifth
- 15:34Speaker 2: home un of the year, both for Adrian Rodriguez and
- 15:38Speaker 2: also for will Gasparino uh and the fifth home run
- 15:44Speaker 2: of the season for Jalen Flores. Ethan Mendoza did not
- 15:48Speaker 2: have a home run, but he had a couple of hits.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And remember Mendoza had a fourteen game hitting streak snapped
- 15:57Speaker 2: in the Friday night loss to LSU, and he came
- 16:00Speaker 2: back when he hit Saturday a couple of hit Sunday.
- 16:03Speaker 2: He had two hits last night, so he's, you know, uh,
- 16:07Speaker 2: back on the wagon again and visiting. Would keep Morland
- 16:09Speaker 2: after the game about it so many times.
- 16:12Speaker 6: It's mentally to come back out when you, you know, have
- 16:16Speaker 6: such an emotional weekend like against LSU, you start to
- 16:19Speaker 6: stepping tone in.
- 16:19Speaker 4: This game early.
- 16:21Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I mean, we don't really talk about
- 16:23Speaker 9: the weekend anymore. It's already over. In the past, we
- 16:25Speaker 9: tried to take it one day at a time and
- 16:27Speaker 9: one game at a time. Every day's opening day, So
- 16:29Speaker 9: that's what's my mindsett of coming in every day all right.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Now, you personally brush at the fourteen games in history,
- 16:34Speaker 6: but you jump right back on the wagon.
- 16:36Speaker 9: Now, Yeah, I mean the hitting streak was cool whatever,
- 16:39Speaker 9: But I mean I'm sorry new one.
- 16:41Speaker 10: Uh.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I mean I didn't really.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Keep up with it.
- 16:43Speaker 7: I was just trying to get.
- 16:46Speaker 9: Yeah, I was just trying to get on base anyway
- 16:48Speaker 9: I could.
- 16:48Speaker 4: And I just I mean, yeah, that's basically it.
- 16:51Speaker 6: Now, talk to just about the infield defense. I know
- 16:54Speaker 6: y'all been working parking and every day watching you see
- 16:56Speaker 6: him pretty game.
- 16:57Speaker 7: Just talk about that cohesiveness of what's going on.
- 16:59Speaker 1: In the infield.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Now, Yeah, I think we I mean, our mindset is
- 17:02Speaker 9: just like one pitch at the time, so I mean
- 17:04Speaker 9: every single pitch we're trying to lock in. I think
- 17:07Speaker 9: we do a good job of talking in thenfield, and
- 17:09Speaker 9: then that keeps us loose and just like uh, I guess,
- 17:11Speaker 9: attentive to the game.
- 17:13Speaker 4: So I mean too, we also do great work for Chilowitzki.
- 17:16Speaker 4: He's also helps us a lot.
- 17:19Speaker 9: I mean, it's just, hey, we're doing great right now
- 17:21Speaker 9: and we're trying to keep on going.
- 17:23Speaker 7: Congratulation some of the victory.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Thanks for visiting you, all right, So there. It is
- 17:26Speaker 2: Ethan Mendoza who's been a really really nice addition with
- 17:33Speaker 2: what he's done the transfer from Arizona State or Native
- 17:36Speaker 2: Texan from South Llaite Carol and he is hitting close
- 17:39Speaker 2: to four hundred right now for the team. So the
- 17:41Speaker 2: Long Orange will head for Columbia Missouri this weekend. Missouri
- 17:45Speaker 2: has lost six straight conference games to open conference play,
- 17:51Speaker 2: so oh and six to start off conference play. They
- 17:54Speaker 2: did win last night their border battle with Illinois over
- 17:57Speaker 2: in the Minor League Ballpark in Illinois. They won that
- 18:01Speaker 2: one eleven and nine, and Texas A and M, which
- 18:05Speaker 2: is also win six in the league, got healthy at
- 18:10Speaker 2: Houston Christian's expense, seven to two. The other to six
- 18:15Speaker 2: team in the league is Florida and they had been
- 18:17Speaker 2: ranked until Georgia swept them in Gainesville and put forty
- 18:22Speaker 2: runs on the board in the process. They scored eight
- 18:24Speaker 2: runs Friday, seventeen, Saturday, and fifteen Sunday.
- 18:26Speaker 1: They run ruled the Gators.
- 18:28Speaker 2: On Sunday, Florida got up on Florida State played a
- 18:34Speaker 2: Tuesday night non conference game and it was a walk
- 18:37Speaker 2: off grand Slam for the Seminoles. So Florida is kind
- 18:40Speaker 2: of struggling right now, trying to find their way to it.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Same with Kentucky, Whi's lost a Xavier I mentioned on
- 18:45Speaker 2: the air last night, Cam Xavier may have lost its
- 18:47Speaker 2: basketball coach, but they didn't lose the baseball game to Kentucky.
- 18:50Speaker 2: They won in Lexington last night by a score of
- 18:53Speaker 2: nine to three. How does this sit with you? You grew
- 18:58Speaker 2: up in Charlotte. You Remembering's College now Queen's University there
- 19:02Speaker 2: in Charlotte, right.
- 19:03Speaker 4: I had some buddies that played soccer and across the
- 19:07Speaker 4: Queens And.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they're transitional Division one and they got some lessons learned.
- 19:16Speaker 4: They played Tennessee last night and lost fourteen to.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Three, but.
- 19:20Speaker 2: They're transitional Division one. Oklahoma wanted or Robert handily and
- 19:28Speaker 2: LSU run Louisiana Lafayette. So those things happened. But Texas,
- 19:34Speaker 2: we head for Columbia to take on the Missouri Tigers
- 19:37Speaker 2: this weekend. Now I wanted to Oh, there was one
- 19:41Speaker 2: other game I wanted to mention. Let's just say say
- 19:48Speaker 2: that you had either not migrated to Texas to go
- 19:53Speaker 2: to college, or having gone to college in Texas and
- 19:58Speaker 2: a tanger degree from the Versity of Texas then decided
- 20:02Speaker 2: to pursue your professional interest back in your home state.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And let's say you were back in Charlotte and you
- 20:11Speaker 2: were working a regular daytime job and not traveling out
- 20:14Speaker 2: of town, and say you had like a regular day shift,
- 20:18Speaker 2: that sort of thing. If all of that had been
- 20:20Speaker 2: in play, would you have been at Do they still
- 20:25Speaker 2: call it Knight's No, No, it's called it's called Truest
- 20:30Speaker 2: Field in Charlotte now used to be Knight's Castle, the
- 20:33Speaker 2: minor league ballpark there, or they got a new one downtown.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yeah, BB and T. I think it might be now Truest.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Will you think you would have been there last night
- 20:41Speaker 2: to watch North Carolina play South Carolina in the Border Battle?
- 20:45Speaker 4: I had a friend who was there. Was he last night?
- 20:47Speaker 4: The top twenty five baseball team? Heck of a ballgame,
- 20:51Speaker 4: heck of a ball ballpark? Yeah?
- 20:53Speaker 2: North Carolina beat South Carolina in Charlotte thirteen to eight
- 20:56Speaker 2: in the Battle of the Carolinas. They said, But you
- 20:58Speaker 2: got me thinking about you last night. I thought, if
- 20:59Speaker 2: you were settled there in the Charlotte area and work
- 21:03Speaker 2: in a regular day job, or work at a job
- 21:05Speaker 2: that had that evening open, would you've gone out to
- 21:08Speaker 2: watch that ball game.
- 21:09Speaker 4: If I was living downtown. Possibly, yeah, possibly because it
- 21:13Speaker 4: is a downtown ballpark. Yeah, yeah, it's a great place
- 21:15Speaker 4: to catch a ball game. Yeah, the White Sox triplay affiliate.
- 21:19Speaker 4: But yeah, absolutely. I mean Gino probably spend some time.
- 21:23Speaker 2: He has spent some time there. We'll ask him about
- 21:25Speaker 2: that coming up. All right, Up next, we bring in
- 21:28Speaker 2: Conceivable here on this Wednesday afternoon on AM thirteen under
- 21:32Speaker 2: the zone. Glad to field your questions if you want
- 21:36Speaker 2: to reach us via the text line. We just rattled
- 21:38Speaker 2: off a few of those, and you do that simply
- 21:41Speaker 2: by texting the word Texas followed by your question or
- 21:44Speaker 2: comment to eight one five three zero. Again the word Texas,
- 21:48Speaker 2: then your question of comment to eight one five three zero.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Like the guy that just went, he went Texas, and
- 21:53Speaker 2: then went Cocaine Sea Lions, and he texted that day
- 21:57Speaker 2: won five three zero, and it came out like that.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Standard messaging and data rates may apply even for cocaine.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Sea Lions, Texas, Cocaine and Sea Lions.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So I didn't know if he was talking about a
- 22:08Speaker 2: teen name or something like that, or whatever you name,
- 22:11Speaker 2: you know.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Cocaine Sea Lions.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. You can also reach us on the talkback feature.
- 22:20Speaker 2: All you have to do is you have the brand
- 22:21Speaker 2: new iHeartRadio, the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone, and
- 22:29Speaker 2: then you just merely pull up your the AM thirteen
- 22:36Speaker 2: hundred the zone. There's two buttons, a white one that's
- 22:38Speaker 2: kind of shaped in a triangle. That's just to listen
- 22:40Speaker 2: to us. But there's a red button with a white
- 22:43Speaker 2: microphone in the middle. You push that and then you
- 22:45Speaker 2: can leave us a thirty second voice message where you
- 22:48Speaker 2: can ask a question, make a comment, whatever you want
- 22:51Speaker 2: to do on that, within the bounds of decency, of course.
- 22:56Speaker 4: So anyway, that's that's available to you there.
- 22:58Speaker 2: All right, we're going to visit with Gene Watson, the
- 23:02Speaker 2: Chicago White Sox front office man. With opening day of
- 23:05Speaker 2: Major League Baseball tomorrow. However, tomorrow, the Texas women's basketball
- 23:09Speaker 2: team least for Birmingham, Alabama to set their sights on
- 23:12Speaker 2: the Sweet sixteen opponents, the Tennessee Lady Valls, who they
- 23:16Speaker 2: beat by four points two months ago, back on January
- 23:19Speaker 2: twenty third. Well, here's some of this right now, and
- 23:21Speaker 2: then we'll hear some more coming up next hour. Comments
- 23:25Speaker 2: from Loghorn's head coach Vick Shaffer.
- 23:27Speaker 11: Well versus, it's just a great week to be along. Man,
- 23:30Speaker 11: it's really exciting time. I'm excited for our players coming
- 23:36Speaker 11: off of a great weekend. Appreciate all our fans. Really
- 23:40Speaker 11: proud of nine thousand showing up at a one o'clock
- 23:43Speaker 11: game on a Monday afternoon. I thought we were going
- 23:45Speaker 11: to have to have a businessman luncheon or have a
- 23:48Speaker 11: couple of kegs out front for students, but man, everybody
- 23:52Speaker 11: just was so special, and obviously our kids were really
- 23:58Speaker 11: special as well. Proud of them back to back years
- 24:01Speaker 11: now where they've been able to win thirty three games
- 24:04Speaker 11: and get through some injury. So excited about our opportunity
- 24:09Speaker 11: coming up this weekend. This is why we do what
- 24:11Speaker 11: we do right. We want to We want to get
- 24:13Speaker 11: to this weekend and these games coming up, and obviously
- 24:17Speaker 11: everybody's really good this time of year that's left. Obviously
- 24:20Speaker 11: our league is so well represented. Iron sharpens iron, y'all,
- 24:25Speaker 11: and uh man, this this group, uh these teams. Alabama
- 24:30Speaker 11: could easily be in this group. Losing in double overtime
- 24:33Speaker 11: at Maryland. We've just got a tremendous league, and I
- 24:37Speaker 11: want to wish everybody in our league the very best
- 24:40Speaker 11: as well. But man, I am super excited about our
- 24:43Speaker 11: team and our kids, and so we'll have I'm sure
- 24:46Speaker 11: we'll have a really good day today. We have lots
- 24:49Speaker 11: of film. Uh you know, Blair had the scout the
- 24:52Speaker 11: first time we played them. Everybody's kind of got their
- 24:56Speaker 11: marching orders for the next three teams and uh, She's like,
- 24:59Speaker 11: how many how many hours have I got? Like how
- 25:01Speaker 11: much time do I have for film today? How much
- 25:03Speaker 11: time tomorrow? I'm like, well, we got all week really,
- 25:06Speaker 11: so whatever we need to show. But you know it's
- 25:11Speaker 11: everybody gets better and throughout the course of the season,
- 25:13Speaker 11: and uh, you know again, I think we do a
- 25:16Speaker 11: good job as anybody with our team continue to improve.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Just like Tennessee.
- 25:20Speaker 11: So again, just really excited about our team, excited about
- 25:25Speaker 11: this week and the opportunity.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Having Rory back this year. You didn't have answer is
- 25:31Speaker 5: it for her to be able.
- 25:32Speaker 1: To come back?
- 25:33Speaker 5: Well, I can tell you when you wake up in
- 25:34Speaker 5: the morning.
- 25:34Speaker 11: Another Rory Harmon and Madison Booker, those two are where
- 25:38Speaker 11: we're starting at guard.
- 25:40Speaker 5: You know, it's you'd have to ask and I have
- 25:43Speaker 5: to ask myself sometimes you have to coach, what are
- 25:45Speaker 5: you worried about?
- 25:47Speaker 11: Like, there's got to be some comfort in that, and
- 25:49Speaker 11: there absolutely is. But you're so excited for her because
- 25:52Speaker 11: she did miss this time last year, and uh, it
- 25:55Speaker 11: just pained her, you know, to to have to sit
- 25:58Speaker 11: there and watch it.
- 25:59Speaker 5: But yeah, she was like she is.
- 26:02Speaker 11: She was so selfless and giving of herself to Madison
- 26:06Speaker 11: and and helping her, you know, obviously understand and performing
- 26:10Speaker 11: her new role. And but it just really having both
- 26:14Speaker 11: those kids again with Rory, when you go into a
- 26:17Speaker 11: game like this where Tennessee really wants to speed you
- 26:20Speaker 11: up and try to turn you over, man, it's great
- 26:22Speaker 11: to have two ball handlers like those two out there
- 26:25Speaker 11: on the floor and you can throw in a brewn
- 26:27Speaker 11: of preston with them. There's really some comfort in that.
- 26:31Speaker 11: So excited for Rory. You know, she's she's y'all see it.
- 26:38Speaker 11: I mean, you look at her playing right now. You
- 26:39Speaker 11: never know a year ago she had a devastating injury.
- 26:43Speaker 11: And the more and more that I look into this, y'all,
- 26:47Speaker 11: and I don't mean to diminish any capacity of what
- 26:52Speaker 11: happens when you have.
- 26:53Speaker 5: A kid get hurt.
- 26:54Speaker 11: But the more and more I look into it, it's
- 26:57Speaker 11: the rehab, it's the kid, and it's the people that's.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Doing the rehab.
- 27:02Speaker 11: And Rory, I asked her, yes, she came by the off.
- 27:06Speaker 11: I said, does your need even bother you? She goes, no,
- 27:09Speaker 11: doesn't bother me at all, have no pain nothing. It's
- 27:13Speaker 11: it's her And if you would have seen her how
- 27:16Speaker 11: committed she was and every day and people have to
- 27:19Speaker 11: tell her, hey, you need to back off, you need
- 27:21Speaker 11: to take a day off.
- 27:23Speaker 5: But that's the commitment of this kid.
- 27:25Speaker 11: We were joking because you know, we scrimmaged USC back
- 27:28Speaker 11: in October, and she actually scrimmaged in that game at
- 27:32Speaker 11: seven and a half, eight months you know, post surgery,
- 27:36Speaker 11: and she.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Was we were talking to you. We were joking, said,
- 27:39Speaker 5: you know, I was probably a step slow.
- 27:40Speaker 11: Coach, I go, yeah, And that was still a step
- 27:42Speaker 11: faster than almost everybody on the floor. And but there
- 27:46Speaker 11: was some heartache that day because people were at USC
- 27:50Speaker 11: where you know, really they have really good guards and
- 27:52Speaker 11: so and you know, we talked about okay, flash forward
- 27:56Speaker 11: from October whatever that was thirty first to where we
- 27:59Speaker 11: are are now in March, five months between that, and
- 28:04Speaker 11: you just look at the kid and you're just like
- 28:06Speaker 11: I look at her every day and go whow. I mean,
- 28:08Speaker 11: it's just amazing, So really happy for her. And again,
- 28:13Speaker 11: kid works. She deserves everything where she is right now
- 28:17Speaker 11: because of her work ethic.
- 28:18Speaker 3: When did you think Rory was Rory?
- 28:22Speaker 12: I mean she may not have pain or anything like that,
- 28:24Speaker 12: but you have to trust the knee and everything. Did
- 28:27Speaker 12: she and you feel like there's about ten games in
- 28:30Speaker 12: and she was the old roarer?
- 28:32Speaker 1: Or was that instantaneously?
- 28:33Speaker 11: You know when I'd watch her, I'd take videos over
- 28:37Speaker 11: out here even in the summer, late in the summer
- 28:39Speaker 11: and send them to doctor Ellens and go, here's your girl.
- 28:43Speaker 5: You know, she looks like a million dollars to me.
- 28:46Speaker 11: And it's you know, July and August, and then we
- 28:50Speaker 11: came out in September and you know, she's not cleared.
- 28:53Speaker 11: But I always wanted him to see what I was seeing,
- 28:56Speaker 11: and you know, we'd take her in every month. He'd
- 29:00Speaker 11: put her hands, he put his hands on her knee
- 29:02Speaker 11: just to you know, those guys want to touch that
- 29:05Speaker 11: knee and they know.
- 29:07Speaker 5: What they're doing.
- 29:07Speaker 11: Like doctor Ellens is so good and he can feel
- 29:10Speaker 11: and so, and I go. You know, I go to
- 29:13Speaker 11: most of those appointments. I want to be and I
- 29:15Speaker 11: don't want to hear it some third hand information from
- 29:17Speaker 11: a trainer that might or might not have heard it right.
- 29:20Speaker 11: So I always want to be able to convey that
- 29:22Speaker 11: to the parents. And so, you know, I was there
- 29:26Speaker 11: most visits listening and paying attention. But I would see
- 29:30Speaker 11: it in the summer. I'm like, this kid is like
- 29:33Speaker 11: Sidney Colson. You know, Colson came back in four months
- 29:36Speaker 11: two days, my point guard on our national championship team
- 29:39Speaker 11: at A and M.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Now that ain't never gonna happen again, y'all.
- 29:42Speaker 11: She came back in four months two days with no
- 29:44Speaker 11: brace and had I think she had thirteen and thirteen
- 29:50Speaker 11: points in like twenty two minutes, you know, in the
- 29:53Speaker 11: State Farm tip Off Classic, that first game that year,
- 29:56Speaker 11: and she hurt hers in late July was so much
- 30:01Speaker 11: similar to that. And I was seeing that early on
- 30:03Speaker 11: that this kid is special. How much how much do
- 30:08Speaker 11: you look at the last Tennessee game versus maybe the
- 30:11Speaker 11: last two weeks.
- 30:12Speaker 5: For them, I think you look at all of it.
- 30:13Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm in there right now, and I've already been
- 30:17Speaker 11: through it, you know, And and so I think you
- 30:20Speaker 11: have to look at it all.
- 30:21Speaker 5: You have to look at what we did back.
- 30:24Speaker 11: Then, and then what what teams have done since then
- 30:28Speaker 11: with them, what they've done to teams, And you know.
- 30:30Speaker 5: You have to give them credit.
- 30:31Speaker 11: They go into Ohio State and went on the road
- 30:34Speaker 11: in a big game, second round game, and really dominated.
- 30:37Speaker 11: They had one stretch where Ohio State made that run
- 30:40Speaker 11: to get back in it, and then they put their
- 30:42Speaker 11: foot on the pedal and it was over in a heartbeat.
- 30:45Speaker 11: And that's how they are.
- 30:46Speaker 5: You you get.
- 30:47Speaker 11: Into their tempo, start throwing the ball of them, and
- 30:49Speaker 11: it's lay up after layup after layup. It's bad, you know,
- 30:54Speaker 11: And that's something it's hard to stop. And so so
- 30:58Speaker 11: you have to give Tennessee a lot of I mean,
- 31:00Speaker 11: they went in there and went on somebody's home floor,
- 31:02Speaker 11: and and but you look at it all. I mean,
- 31:05Speaker 11: I'm will have looked at everything from our game to
- 31:10Speaker 11: the last, you know, every game in between, you know,
- 31:13Speaker 11: just to make sure we get all our bases covered.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Speaking.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's some comments from Victation for we hear
- 31:19Speaker 2: more from coming up a little bit later on this
- 31:21Speaker 2: how we're going to shift to baseball, Major League Baseball,
- 31:24Speaker 2: and talk some Opening day baseball with Geene Watson from
- 31:28Speaker 2: the Chicago White Sox front office. Coming up on thirteen
- 31:30Speaker 2: under the zone. So major League Baseball again. Tomorrow the
- 31:33Speaker 2: opening day for everybody else. I mean, I know, the
- 31:37Speaker 2: the Dodgers and the Cubs played two games in Japan,
- 31:42Speaker 2: but now everybody, including those two teams, gets going tomorrow.
- 31:46Speaker 2: It's opening Day, and it's not Opening Day unless we
- 31:49Speaker 2: take the opportunity to talk baseball with a good friend.
- 31:52Speaker 4: Jean watching from the Chicago White Sox front office, who's.
- 31:54Speaker 2: About to get on the plane and go up to
- 31:57Speaker 2: Chicago for Opening Day tomorrow.
- 32:00Speaker 13: Off of the socks. Forty two. Forty two and clear
- 32:04Speaker 13: is what they're calling for. That's a good day, roping day.
- 32:08Speaker 4: What's the worst weather you've been around on an opig day?
- 32:11Speaker 13: Oh, my gosh, I've been. I've been in a few
- 32:14Speaker 13: snow games. I was in Detroit one year. We actually
- 32:19Speaker 13: stopped and had lunch at Fishbone in Greek Town and
- 32:21Speaker 13: the kitchen caught on fire, and that that was quite
- 32:25Speaker 13: a day, really wow.
- 32:26Speaker 1: That two two thousand and three somewhere around there. But yeah,
- 32:30Speaker 1: we've had a few snow days.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, well, I know that you're excited about this
- 32:36Speaker 2: when we talked about this last week, that while the
- 32:39Speaker 2: White Sox themselves are still going to be in a
- 32:41Speaker 2: building mode and a rebuilding mode and and in some
- 32:45Speaker 2: ways to be a long season because of the record,
- 32:48Speaker 2: in other ways, you're expecting in the front office, expecting
- 32:52Speaker 2: to see progress made from last year to this year
- 32:55Speaker 2: and another step forward.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Correct. Yeah, and it's really nothing different than last season.
- 33:00Speaker 13: We knew it was going to be a long season
- 33:03Speaker 13: from a personnel standpoint.
- 33:05Speaker 1: You know, we had traded our.
- 33:06Speaker 13: Number one started during spring training, Dylan Ceas, and now
- 33:10Speaker 13: we've traded our number one start away again and Garrett Crochet,
- 33:13Speaker 13: and you know, there's a pretty good probability that, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 13: Louis Robert, our number one position player, will be traded
- 33:18Speaker 13: at some point this season.
- 33:20Speaker 1: So you just you go with the ups and downs.
- 33:22Speaker 13: You focus on the things that you can control, and
- 33:24Speaker 13: we're certainly excited about you know, where our minor league
- 33:27Speaker 13: system is now just in a year and you put
- 33:30Speaker 13: your head down and go to work on another year
- 33:31Speaker 13: for it.
- 33:32Speaker 1: And you know, it was fun.
- 33:32Speaker 13: To watch what the Royals did last year in the
- 33:35Speaker 13: playoffs because that we were a big part of that
- 33:38Speaker 13: before we came to Chicago, and so you just you
- 33:41Speaker 13: apply the same work and just keep grinding.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Away day by day.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I want to ask you about something else, and because
- 33:47Speaker 2: I know you've been around these types of scenes before.
- 33:51Speaker 2: It made Sports Center and there was a lot made
- 33:53Speaker 2: of showing that locker room, that clubhouse video of Cam
- 33:59Speaker 2: Smith who got picked.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Up by the Astros.
- 34:02Speaker 2: As part of that, Kyle Tucker Tray made the opening
- 34:04Speaker 2: day roster and there was a video shared by the
- 34:07Speaker 2: team and you see Joe Espotta address the players and
- 34:10Speaker 2: then brought out his mother and told him and it
- 34:12Speaker 2: was very emotional.
- 34:13Speaker 1: There was tears involved.
- 34:14Speaker 2: You've been involved in some of those where you've seen
- 34:16Speaker 2: some guys get really excited about that, haven't you, Craig.
- 34:20Speaker 13: It's really it's one of the more enjoyable things to see.
- 34:24Speaker 13: It brings so much joy when you see something like that,
- 34:27Speaker 13: because it doesn't matter if you're the first pick in
- 34:30Speaker 13: the first round or the last pick in the twentieth round.
- 34:33Speaker 1: There's no guarantee you're getting the big leagues.
- 34:35Speaker 13: It is a miracle to play in the big leagues
- 34:38Speaker 13: one day and you have a forty time greater chance
- 34:41Speaker 13: of graduating from Harvard than playing a day in the
- 34:43Speaker 13: big leagues and injuries and setbacks, some performance and being
- 34:48Speaker 13: asked to do things mechanically with your swing or on
- 34:51Speaker 13: the mound or defensively. Everything has to go absolutely perfect
- 34:56Speaker 13: for you to play a day in the big leagues.
- 34:58Speaker 13: And it's such such a great celebration for for players
- 35:03Speaker 13: and their families and all the hard work that goes
- 35:06Speaker 13: into everybody, the entire village that it takes to raise
- 35:10Speaker 13: a player. And so when you ever get to see
- 35:13Speaker 13: special moments like that, it's certainly great and never gets old.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Well, and here's another example what you're talking about. There's
- 35:20Speaker 2: there's that, and then the opposite the end, and this
- 35:22Speaker 2: is I would imagine, you know, this is even more
- 35:24Speaker 2: of a unicorn moment where the Angels second round or
- 35:30Speaker 2: Ryan Johnson made the Angels opening day roster drafted in
- 35:35Speaker 2: the second round last year, coming out of Dallas Baptist,
- 35:39Speaker 2: signed for one point seventy five million, didn't pitch after
- 35:42Speaker 2: throwing one hundred and six years innings in that junior season,
- 35:45Speaker 2: he made the roster, and he will be on the
- 35:48Speaker 2: roster without having played a day in the minor leagues.
- 35:51Speaker 2: That is truly a unicorn moment, isn't it.
- 35:53Speaker 1: It's unbelievable.
- 35:54Speaker 13: And the thing of it is is Perry you know
- 35:58Speaker 13: who I'll see tomorrow and we're having to Saturday night,
- 36:00Speaker 13: Perryman asking the general manager just isn't afraid to put
- 36:04Speaker 13: his twenty six best players on the field. You saw
- 36:07Speaker 13: it with Logan o' hoppy. You saw it with Shan
- 36:09Speaker 13: Well at first base. You saw it with Zach Nato
- 36:12Speaker 13: as shortstop. He's going to be ultra aggressive when it
- 36:15Speaker 13: comes to putting his best players at the major league level.
- 36:19Speaker 13: And the system is kind of taken, you know, a shot,
- 36:24Speaker 13: you know, being ranked so low, but they ranked so
- 36:26Speaker 13: low because he.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Moves his players of the big league so fast.
- 36:28Speaker 13: And I think to have one of the higher wars
- 36:31Speaker 13: of drafted players in the last five six years. And
- 36:35Speaker 13: he's just not afraid. He's super aggressive to give these
- 36:37Speaker 13: guys an opportunity. And Ryan Johnson went into camp and
- 36:40Speaker 13: he earned the spot and it's great for him.
- 36:42Speaker 2: By the way, I think, I do find it interesting. Also,
- 36:44Speaker 2: he's the first player to skip the minor leagues entirely
- 36:47Speaker 2: since the aforementioned Garrett Crochet, who did it in twenty twenty,
- 36:51Speaker 2: and of course the minor league season was canceled due
- 36:53Speaker 2: to the pandemic, but Johnson's only the third player since
- 36:58Speaker 2: two thousand and one to play in the big leagues
- 37:00Speaker 2: without a minor league appearance. Crochet Mike Leak, who long
- 37:03Speaker 2: warn fans remember when was pitching for Arizona State when
- 37:06Speaker 2: Texas beat Leak and Arizona State in the College World
- 37:10Speaker 2: Series in Omaha in two thousand and nine.
- 37:12Speaker 1: The Leak moved in in twenty ten and Geno.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Since the implementation of the draft in nineteen sixty five,
- 37:19Speaker 2: only twenty three players before Johnson have been moved straight
- 37:24Speaker 2: to the big leagues. That's how unreal it is, isn't it.
- 37:28Speaker 1: It really is.
- 37:29Speaker 13: And in today's climates where last year, you know, the
- 37:33Speaker 13: average roster use per team was fifty players, the average
- 37:38Speaker 13: pitchers used per team was thirty plus. I think the
- 37:42Speaker 13: average starters used.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Was like eleven, somewhere in that range.
- 37:46Speaker 13: You know that they explained to him in the meeting, Look,
- 37:50Speaker 13: you earned a spot, You're going to be here, but
- 37:53Speaker 13: by no means it's this. I mean you're here all
- 37:55Speaker 13: season and there's a lot of especially with all the
- 37:58Speaker 13: injuries taking place to pitching right now, there's a lot
- 38:01Speaker 13: of manipulating the roster to try to sustain your depths
- 38:04Speaker 13: of your pitching, and so that certainly went into it.
- 38:07Speaker 13: But but he is one of the thirteen most talented
- 38:09Speaker 13: pitchers on the roster for now.
- 38:10Speaker 1: And until he proves otherwise, he's going to be in
- 38:12Speaker 1: the big leagues.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Talking Major League Baseball here, Regene Watson from the Chicago
- 38:16Speaker 2: White Socks. We we mentioned this geno back a few
- 38:19Speaker 2: weeks ago when this happened, when Alex Bregman went over
- 38:23Speaker 2: from the Astros to the Red Sox, and there was
- 38:28Speaker 2: a lot of this conversation about what was going to
- 38:30Speaker 2: happen with Raephael Devers, who was going to play third
- 38:33Speaker 2: And today, a guy you know very very well, Alex Cora,
- 38:37Speaker 2: the manager, said today that Devers is going to serve
- 38:39Speaker 2: as the primary DH with Bregman at third base. And
- 38:44Speaker 2: I believe that's what you said, that you saw Bregman
- 38:47Speaker 2: probably playing over at third base, and here's Devers going
- 38:52Speaker 2: to the DH troll.
- 38:54Speaker 1: I think when you.
- 38:55Speaker 13: Get out of the emotion of the moment and the
- 38:58Speaker 13: acquisition at the time of the act position. You know,
- 39:00Speaker 13: players have so much pride in their ability that you
- 39:04Speaker 13: know there can be a strong stance as to I'm.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Not going to do this or or I'm going to
- 39:09Speaker 1: do this, and.
- 39:10Speaker 13: Then as the conversations begin to take place, and really
- 39:14Speaker 13: in between the white lines is the ultimate evaluator. And
- 39:17Speaker 13: I'm sure Raphael looked over and saw gold glove infield.
- 39:20Speaker 1: And he wants to win. And so if you if you,
- 39:24Speaker 1: if you.
- 39:24Speaker 13: Put it in the in the hands of the players,
- 39:26Speaker 13: it's a players game. And if you put it in
- 39:28Speaker 13: the hands of the players and you let them see
- 39:32Speaker 13: the true evaluation of what's around them, most of the
- 39:34Speaker 13: time the players are going to come to their senses
- 39:37Speaker 13: and say, you know what, I want to win and
- 39:39Speaker 13: this is what makes our team better.
- 39:40Speaker 1: That's certainly what Raphaeld Nevers did well.
- 39:42Speaker 2: And to your point, Alex Pregman won the gold Glove
- 39:47Speaker 2: last season at third base. Devers has led the American
- 39:51Speaker 2: League or been tied for the lead and errors three
- 39:54Speaker 2: times over the past seven season, So there's some common
- 39:56Speaker 2: sense involved there. And then this also opens up the
- 40:00Speaker 2: second base job to Christian Campbell. Tell everybody about this guy,
- 40:03Speaker 2: their top prospect who was announced he's going to be
- 40:06Speaker 2: on the Red Sox opening day roster.
- 40:09Speaker 13: Yeah, Christian Campbell was kind of the hold up in
- 40:11Speaker 13: a Garrett Crochet deal. We were very adamant that either
- 40:15Speaker 13: Kyle Tile or Christian Campbell was going to be a
- 40:18Speaker 13: part of the deal, and we were really getting nowhere
- 40:21Speaker 13: with either one of them until about two o'clock in
- 40:23Speaker 13: the morning in the winter meetings when Craig Breslo called
- 40:26Speaker 13: Chris Katch and said, Okay, we'll make Kill a part
- 40:28Speaker 13: of the deal.
- 40:29Speaker 1: But this is a.
- 40:30Speaker 13: Ultra dynamic, tremendous athlete plus defender can really really run.
- 40:36Speaker 13: He just makes them so athletic when you talk about
- 40:38Speaker 13: him and former Texas Longhorn David Hamilton up the middle,
- 40:42Speaker 13: they've got a lot of versatility and speed and athleticism.
- 40:45Speaker 13: But again, one hundred and sixty two games is a
- 40:48Speaker 13: long season. You don't know if the bat is going
- 40:50Speaker 13: to produce at the level that it should. But at
- 40:53Speaker 13: the time they felt like that this is the best
- 40:55Speaker 13: ball to fire to start the season, and that's what
- 40:57Speaker 13: they're doing.
- 40:57Speaker 2: All right, So Gino, you know, I'm really really good
- 41:00Speaker 2: at this and that is going to be asking you
- 41:06Speaker 2: for your thoughts on who will be the teams to
- 41:09Speaker 2: beat in each division race.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Let me start with the America League.
- 41:12Speaker 2: We start in the East with the Rays, the Jays,
- 41:16Speaker 2: the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Orioles.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Who do you like in the East.
- 41:20Speaker 13: Well, I think it's a three team race personally between Baltimore, Boston,
- 41:23Speaker 13: and the Yankees. The Yankees injuries to their rotation have
- 41:28Speaker 13: been huge. At some point, they're going to have to
- 41:31Speaker 13: go get some pitching. Boston is the team that has
- 41:34Speaker 13: done the most to improve their team, and they've got
- 41:36Speaker 13: the best system, so they can either pull from their
- 41:39Speaker 13: system to make the team even more talented than already is,
- 41:43Speaker 13: or they can trade from their system to improve the team.
- 41:45Speaker 13: In July, Baltimore is the team to me that it's
- 41:48Speaker 13: kind of time to go. Michael Olias has done such
- 41:52Speaker 13: an unbelievable job of building up that minor league system.
- 41:55Speaker 1: They've gone back.
- 41:55Speaker 13: And forth with the ballpark, with the high wall the
- 41:58Speaker 13: low wall. They've put a lot of inference on they're pitching.
- 42:01Speaker 13: But it's time to go, and I think they know it.
- 42:03Speaker 13: And so those three teams jumping out and how they
- 42:06Speaker 13: get out of the gate is going to be really
- 42:09Speaker 13: reflective of the moves that they make.
- 42:11Speaker 1: And and because you know, the.
- 42:14Speaker 13: Central has two three very good teams, I think that
- 42:18Speaker 13: that the teams are going to be very very aggressive
- 42:20Speaker 13: in the East. I do think that all three teams
- 42:23Speaker 13: that come out of the two wild cards in the
- 42:25Speaker 13: winner will all make the playoffs. But I certainly think
- 42:28Speaker 13: that the Yankees, Boston and Baltimore are the class.
- 42:32Speaker 1: And I'm going to call for an upset and give
- 42:33Speaker 1: it to the Red Sox.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Wow, okay, there you go, all right to the Central.
- 42:36Speaker 2: You mentioned them a division you know very very well
- 42:39Speaker 2: since you spent time with the Royals and building that
- 42:41Speaker 2: world championship team back for twenty fifteen. All right, so
- 42:44Speaker 2: you have Royals, Twins, Tigers, Guardians, and your ball club,
- 42:49Speaker 2: the White Sox.
- 42:51Speaker 13: I remember having breakfast with aj Hinch in Chicago in September,
- 42:54Speaker 13: and you know they were kind of, you know, running
- 42:57Speaker 13: out of gas and saying to him, you know, for
- 42:59Speaker 13: all all the injuries and everything that took place this year,
- 43:03Speaker 13: next year is going to be two steps forward. They
- 43:06Speaker 13: swept us that weekend, and they went on an absolute
- 43:09Speaker 13: historic tear to get as far as they did the playoffs.
- 43:12Speaker 13: And trust me when I say aj Hinch knows what
- 43:16Speaker 13: it takes to win in October and he's got.
- 43:18Speaker 1: The roster to do it.
- 43:20Speaker 13: Jackson Job is arguably going to be the Rookie of
- 43:22Speaker 13: the Year front runner, one of the best young arms
- 43:25Speaker 13: in the game of baseball, and so I look for
- 43:27Speaker 13: the Tigers to really really up the ani this year.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And take that division.
- 43:32Speaker 13: Kansas City is going to be very, very talented, but
- 43:34Speaker 13: health to that rotation and health to any Pascatino and
- 43:37Speaker 13: Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Junior are going to be
- 43:40Speaker 13: really really important to their success this year. But I
- 43:43Speaker 13: just feel like with the momentum that the Tigers had
- 43:46Speaker 13: last year and the injection of Jackson Job to that
- 43:49Speaker 13: rotation and the system they have to go do more.
- 43:52Speaker 1: I think they'll win the Central all right.
- 43:54Speaker 2: In the West Astros, Rangers, Mariners, and what's listed as
- 43:59Speaker 2: just as because we know what's happening there with them
- 44:02Speaker 2: playing in Sacramento and the.
- 44:04Speaker 13: Angels, this division is going to play a lot tighter
- 44:07Speaker 13: than people thinking of Oakland. The Athletics are a very young,
- 44:13Speaker 13: talented team and they had one of the better second
- 44:16Speaker 13: halves of anybody in baseball last year, and they've made
- 44:18Speaker 13: some nice free agent additions to the team. I really
- 44:22Speaker 13: really think that the most underrated team in the American
- 44:24Speaker 13: League is the Texas Rangers. Bruce Bochie has always been
- 44:28Speaker 13: in every other year guy. They had a bunch of
- 44:30Speaker 13: underperformance last year. They took a bunch of injuries, and
- 44:33Speaker 13: adding Kumar Rocker and lighter to in any role to
- 44:38Speaker 13: the thirteen man staff in pitching is going to be huge,
- 44:41Speaker 13: and I think that this is a team that's going
- 44:43Speaker 13: to be driven very, very good this year.
- 44:45Speaker 1: They're one of my.
- 44:46Speaker 13: Sleepers to be in the World Series. I think they've
- 44:48Speaker 13: got a great team. And Seattle obviously with their great
- 44:51Speaker 13: pitching staff, they have to perform offensively. But with Oakland
- 44:55Speaker 13: kind of narrowing the gap in that division and the
- 44:59Speaker 13: Angels playing better baseball, it's going to be a very
- 45:01Speaker 13: very tight or tougher division, but I.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Think the Rangers pull away with it.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Were you surprised to see the Rangers have Evan Carter
- 45:07Speaker 2: start in Round.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Rock I mean not really.
- 45:11Speaker 13: I mean sometimes sometimes when guys get such a fast
- 45:15Speaker 13: pace to the major leagues that that you know that
- 45:17Speaker 13: adjustment period can come sooner or later. And it obviously
- 45:20Speaker 13: came for him a little bit later. But it's nothing
- 45:22Speaker 13: to be for him to be concerned about or Ranger
- 45:25Speaker 13: fans to be concerned about. He's an ultra talented player
- 45:28Speaker 13: and he's going to be fine, and he'll he'll win.
- 45:30Speaker 1: When it's time for those guys to win, he'll be
- 45:32Speaker 1: a part of it all right.
- 45:33Speaker 2: To the National League East Marlins, Phillies, Mets, Nationals, and Braves.
- 45:38Speaker 13: Well, the Phillies, Braves, and Mets are the three classes
- 45:43Speaker 13: of the division.
- 45:44Speaker 14: Uh.
- 45:45Speaker 13: I struggle a little bit with the Mets bullpen. I
- 45:47Speaker 13: don't think it's as proven as people would think. Love
- 45:50Speaker 13: the everyday lineup, they're really going to score a lot
- 45:52Speaker 13: of runs. They've got great pitching, They've got very good
- 45:55Speaker 13: prospects to do what they need to do. So I
- 45:57Speaker 13: think the Mets are going to stay in at the
- 45:59Speaker 13: Phillies kind of just do what they do. They're social
- 46:02Speaker 13: well managed team by Robbie Thompson, and they're super talented
- 46:05Speaker 13: that you certainly think that they'll they'll be in the
- 46:08Speaker 13: mix and win that division. And then Spencer, Strider and
- 46:10Speaker 13: Acuna coming back for the Braves is going to be huge,
- 46:13Speaker 13: and I think that they're probably the class of the division.
- 46:15Speaker 13: But I look for the Braves and Phillies to come
- 46:19Speaker 13: out of the division either as the winner or the
- 46:21Speaker 13: wild card, and then the Mets are going to have
- 46:23Speaker 13: to really work to improve that team. Maybe go get
- 46:26Speaker 13: a bat, maybe get some pin or a starter, because
- 46:29Speaker 13: in the West, there's a team that we'll talk about
- 46:31Speaker 13: soon that's going to push for that other wildcard spot.
- 46:34Speaker 2: All right in the Central Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, Brewers, and Cubs.
- 46:40Speaker 13: Well, the Brewers play the best baseball. The Brewers play
- 46:44Speaker 13: the best baseball in all of baseball, even without the
- 46:46Speaker 13: most talented. Without the most talent, Pat Murphy does an
- 46:50Speaker 13: unbelievable job. Their player development system is just incredible. They
- 46:54Speaker 13: focus on all the little things. They play to the
- 46:57Speaker 13: scoreboard at every level, at every game, they just do
- 47:00Speaker 13: the little things. They run the base as well, they
- 47:03Speaker 13: throw the cutoffs well, they do.
- 47:05Speaker 1: All the little things well to win ball games.
- 47:06Speaker 13: And that's a margin for me, and I think that
- 47:09Speaker 13: they're certainly the class of the division. The Cubs with
- 47:12Speaker 13: Ben Brown and Kate Foster, they're certainly gonna have a
- 47:16Speaker 13: chance to impact that rotation with young arms, and they've
- 47:21Speaker 13: got some offensive players.
- 47:23Speaker 1: So to me, it's the Brewers and the Cubs and
- 47:25Speaker 1: a dog fight for that division.
- 47:26Speaker 13: And the Reds have a very very good minor league
- 47:29Speaker 13: system if they're willing to trade some of their prospects
- 47:32Speaker 13: to improve the major league team. And I just don't
- 47:34Speaker 13: believe Tito Francona went to Cincinnati to sit back and
- 47:38Speaker 13: a way for prospects to get to the major leagues.
- 47:40Speaker 13: I think that the Reds will eventually very aggressive in
- 47:42Speaker 13: improving that team.
- 47:43Speaker 2: And finally in the West you have Arizona, Colorado, San Diego,
- 47:47Speaker 2: San Francisco, and the defending world champion Dodgers.
- 47:51Speaker 13: Well, I mean, I know you love this, but the
- 47:55Speaker 13: Dodgers are just I mean, they're gonna wish away every
- 47:58Speaker 13: day of the season just to it's October, and it's
- 48:01Speaker 13: so very hard, and we went through it in fourteen
- 48:04Speaker 13: and fifteen. You know, when you know you're an October
- 48:06Speaker 13: team and you know you're arguably the best team in baseball,
- 48:10Speaker 13: you just try to be creative, to stay motivated with
- 48:13Speaker 13: each other, play for each other throughout the season, and
- 48:16Speaker 13: stay healthy because you know you're in October and you
- 48:19Speaker 13: want to be playing your best baseball and the most
- 48:21Speaker 13: healthy the last week of September into October.
- 48:24Speaker 1: But this divisions a little tougher than people think.
- 48:27Speaker 13: The Padres, I mean, they were a team to be
- 48:30Speaker 13: reckoned with last year and aj Hinch is going to
- 48:33Speaker 13: do what he has to do to stay in this thing.
- 48:34Speaker 13: And the Diamondbacks with their starting rotation, they're going to
- 48:38Speaker 13: be very, very tough as well. And the Giants. If
- 48:40Speaker 13: you ask Buster Posey and Zach I'm Anascian, you know
- 48:43Speaker 13: they'll tell you that they're going to hang into it.
- 48:45Speaker 13: But I still think that the Dodgers are the class
- 48:48Speaker 13: of the division. They're the class of the league and
- 48:51Speaker 13: in the end that they'll win that division. But the
- 48:53Speaker 13: Diamondbacks and the Padres are the two teams that could
- 48:57Speaker 13: make it interesting. And I look for the Diamondbacks, Padres,
- 49:01Speaker 13: and Mets to kind of be battling for that last
- 49:03Speaker 13: wild wildcard spot the last week of the season.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and I guess the Diamondbacks got the bad news
- 49:09Speaker 2: today about Jordan Montgomery having to do Tommy John That
- 49:12Speaker 2: takes him out of that, so they'll have to find someone.
- 49:14Speaker 2: But they've had a good minor league system ringing guys up.
- 49:17Speaker 13: There's never been a season that I can remember where
- 49:20Speaker 13: the health of a ball club is going to matter more,
- 49:24Speaker 13: because there's just been just the underbelly of teams, pitching depths,
- 49:31Speaker 13: the underbelly of their systems. There have been so many
- 49:35Speaker 13: injuries that there are very few teams that can take
- 49:38Speaker 13: on many more injuries. And you look around, you know
- 49:40Speaker 13: the guys that are coming back from Tommy John. Now
- 49:42Speaker 13: you've got a whole other wave that are gonna have
- 49:44Speaker 13: Tommy John surgery. And there's just only so much the
- 49:48Speaker 13: industry can take from an injury standpoint, And so inasmuch
- 49:51Speaker 13: as anything player personnel wise on the field, health to
- 49:55Speaker 13: a ball club is going to be super super important
- 49:58Speaker 13: to try to get to October, especially the summer months.
- 50:01Speaker 2: G know, I appreciate the time save travels up to
- 50:04Speaker 2: the Windy City and hope for good enough weather tomorrow
- 50:06Speaker 2: for that opener against the Angels, and appreciate all the time.
- 50:10Speaker 1: All right, Greg, thanks so much. All right, travels.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Say that's Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox for
- 50:16Speaker 2: an office. White Sox opening home tomorrow against the Angels.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Rangers and Astros both have home openers tomorrow, Rangers against
- 50:22Speaker 2: the Red Sox at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon and the
- 50:27Speaker 2: Astros at two o'clock against the Mets tomorrow afternoon.
- 50:32Speaker 4: That's the openers on that.
- 50:34Speaker 2: All right, We'll have more coming up, more from Vick
- 50:37Speaker 2: Schaeffer when we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
- 50:39Speaker 13: Very very good this year. They're one of my sleepers
- 50:42Speaker 13: to be in the World Series. I think they've got
- 50:44Speaker 13: a great team, and Seattle obviously with their great pitching staff,
- 50:47Speaker 13: they have to perform offensively. But with Oakland kind of
- 50:51Speaker 13: narrowing the gap in that division and the Angels playing
- 50:54Speaker 13: better baseball, it's going to be a very very tight
- 50:57Speaker 13: or tougher division, but I think the Rangers pull away
- 50:59Speaker 13: with it.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Were you surprised to see the Rangers have Evan Carter
- 51:03Speaker 2: start in Round Rock?
- 51:06Speaker 1: I mean not really.
- 51:07Speaker 13: I mean sometimes sometimes when guys get such a fast
- 51:10Speaker 13: pace to the major leagues that that you know that
- 51:12Speaker 13: adjustment period can come sooner or later. And it obviously
- 51:15Speaker 13: came for him a little bit later. But it's nothing
- 51:18Speaker 13: to be for him to be concerned about or Ranger
- 51:20Speaker 13: fans to be concerned about. He's an ultra talented player
- 51:23Speaker 13: and he's gonna be fine and he'll he'll win the
- 51:25Speaker 13: when it's time for those guys to win, he'll be
- 51:27Speaker 13: a part of all.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Right to the National League East Marlins, Phillies, Mets, Nationals,
- 51:31Speaker 2: and Braves.
- 51:33Speaker 13: Well, the Phillies, Braves, and Mets are the three classes
- 51:38Speaker 13: of the division.
- 51:39Speaker 5: Uh.
- 51:40Speaker 13: I struggle a little bit with the Mets bullpen. I
- 51:42Speaker 13: don't think it's as proven as people would think. Love
- 51:45Speaker 13: the everyday lineup. They're really going to score a lot
- 51:48Speaker 13: of runs. They've got great pitching, They've got very good
- 51:50Speaker 13: prospects to do what they need to do. So I
- 51:52Speaker 13: think the Mets are going to stay in at the
- 51:54Speaker 13: Phillies kind of just do what they do. They're they're social,
- 51:57Speaker 13: well managed team by Robbie Thompson, and they're super talented
- 52:00Speaker 13: that you certainly think that they'll they'll be in the
- 52:03Speaker 13: mix and win that division. And then Spencer, Strider and
- 52:06Speaker 13: Acuna coming back for the Braves is going to be huge,
- 52:08Speaker 13: and I think that they're probably the class of the division.
- 52:11Speaker 13: But I look for the Braves and Phillies to come
- 52:14Speaker 13: out of the division either as the winner or the
- 52:17Speaker 13: wild card, and then the Mets are going to have
- 52:19Speaker 13: to really work to improve that team, Maybe go get
- 52:21Speaker 13: a bat, maybe get some pin or a starter. Because
- 52:24Speaker 13: in the West, there's a team that we'll talk about
- 52:26Speaker 13: soon that's going to push for that other wildcard spot.
- 52:29Speaker 2: All right in the Central Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, Brewers, and Cubs.
- 52:35Speaker 13: Well, the Brewers play the best baseball. The Brewers play
- 52:39Speaker 13: the best baseball in all of baseball, even without the
- 52:42Speaker 13: most talented. Without the most talent, Pat Murphy does an
- 52:45Speaker 13: unbelievable job. Their player development system is just incredible. They
- 52:50Speaker 13: focus on all the little things. They play to the
- 52:52Speaker 13: scoreboard at every level, at every game, and they just
- 52:55Speaker 13: do the little things. They run the base as well,
- 52:58Speaker 13: they throw the cutoffs well, they do all the little
- 53:00Speaker 13: things well to win ball games. And that's a margin
- 53:03Speaker 13: for me, and I think that they're certainly the class
- 53:05Speaker 13: of the division. The Cubs with Ben Brown and Kate Foster,
- 53:10Speaker 13: they're certainly gonna have a chance to impact that rotation
- 53:15Speaker 13: with young arms, and they've got some offensive players. So
- 53:18Speaker 13: to me, it's the Brewers and the Cubs and a
- 53:20Speaker 13: dog fight for that division. And the Reds have a
- 53:23Speaker 13: very very good minor league system. If they're willing to
- 53:26Speaker 13: trade some of their prospects to improve the major league team.
- 53:28Speaker 13: And I just don't believe Tito Francona went to Cincinnati
- 53:32Speaker 13: to sit back and wait for prospects to get to
- 53:34Speaker 13: the major leagues. I think that the Reds will eventually
- 53:37Speaker 13: very aggressive in improving that team.
- 53:38Speaker 2: And finally in the West, you have Arizona, Colorado, San Diego,
- 53:42Speaker 2: San Francisco, and the defending world champion Dodgers.
- 53:46Speaker 13: Well, I mean, I know you love this, but the
- 53:50Speaker 13: Dodgers are just I mean, they're gonna wish away every
- 53:53Speaker 13: day of the season just to get to October. And
- 53:56Speaker 13: it's so very hard, and we went through it in
- 53:58Speaker 13: fourteen and fifteen. You know, when you know you're an
- 54:01Speaker 13: October team and you know you're arguably the best team
- 54:04Speaker 13: in baseball, you just try to be creative, to stay
- 54:07Speaker 13: motivated with each other, play for each other throughout the season,
- 54:11Speaker 13: and stay healthy because you know you're in October and
- 54:14Speaker 13: you want to be playing your best baseball and the
- 54:16Speaker 13: most healthy the last week of September into October.
- 54:20Speaker 1: But this divisions a little tougher than people think. The Padres.
- 54:23Speaker 13: I mean, they were a team to be reckoned with
- 54:25Speaker 13: last year, and aj Hinch is going to do what
- 54:28Speaker 13: he has to do to stay in this thing. And
- 54:30Speaker 13: the Diamondbacks with their starting rotation, they're going to be very,
- 54:34Speaker 13: very tough as well. And the Giants, if you ask
- 54:36Speaker 13: Buster Posey and Zach I'm Anascian, you know.
- 54:38Speaker 1: They'll tell you that they're going to hang into it.
- 54:40Speaker 13: But I still think that the Dodgers are the class
- 54:43Speaker 13: of the division.
- 54:44Speaker 1: They're the class of the league and in the end
- 54:47Speaker 1: that they'll win that division.
- 54:48Speaker 13: But the Diamondbacks and the Padres are the two teams
- 54:52Speaker 13: that could make it interesting. And I look for the Diamondbacks, Padres,
- 54:56Speaker 13: and Mets to kind of be battling for that last
- 54:58Speaker 13: while while part spot the last week of the season.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I guess the Diamondbacks got the bad news
- 55:04Speaker 2: today about Jordan Montgomery having to do Tommy John That
- 55:07Speaker 2: takes him out of that, so they'll have to find someone.
- 55:09Speaker 2: But they've had a good minor league system ringing guys up.
- 55:12Speaker 13: There's never been a season that I can remember where
- 55:16Speaker 13: the health of a ball club is going to matter
- 55:18Speaker 13: more because there's just been just the underbelly of teams,
- 55:25Speaker 13: pitching depths, the underbelly of their systems. There have been
- 55:29Speaker 13: so many injuries that there are very few teams that
- 55:32Speaker 13: can take on many more injuries. And you look around,
- 55:35Speaker 13: you know the guys that are coming back from Tommy John.
- 55:37Speaker 13: Now you've got a whole nother wave that are gonna
- 55:39Speaker 13: have Tommy John surgery. And there's just only so much
- 55:43Speaker 13: the industry can take from an injury standpoint, And so
- 55:45Speaker 13: inasmuch as anything player personnel wise on the field, health
- 55:50Speaker 13: to a ball club is going to be super super
- 55:52Speaker 13: important to try to get to October, especially through the
- 55:55Speaker 13: summer months.
- 55:56Speaker 2: G you know, I appreciate the time safe travels up
- 55:59Speaker 2: to the Windy City and hope for good enough weather
- 56:01Speaker 2: tomorrow for that opener against the Angels, and appreciate all
- 56:04Speaker 2: the time.
- 56:06Speaker 1: All right, thank you so much. All right, travels.
- 56:08Speaker 2: Say that's Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox for
- 56:11Speaker 2: an office White Sox opening home tomorrow against the Angels.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Rangers and Astros both have home openers tomorrow, Rangers against
- 56:17Speaker 2: the Red Sox at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon and the
- 56:22Speaker 2: Astros at two o'clock against the Mets tomorrow afternoon. That's
- 56:28Speaker 2: the openers on that. All right, We'll have more coming up.
- 56:32Speaker 2: More from Vic Shaeffer. When we continue on thirteen under
- 56:34Speaker 2: the Zone, here's some more with Longworts head coach Vick Shaffer.
- 56:38Speaker 12: Speaking of that as somebody really right now the last
- 56:42Speaker 12: few games for them, and maybe somebody's cooled doll.
- 56:45Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, I think you look at their team
- 56:47Speaker 11: and you got all those kids are still playing at
- 56:49Speaker 11: a high, high level, whether it's Jewel Spear Spencer or
- 56:54Speaker 11: you know, any of those kids, they're just they're all Tlaysia.
- 56:58Speaker 11: You know, those kids are all so special, and I
- 57:02Speaker 11: just think they're relentless, you know.
- 57:03Speaker 5: And uh again, they play that style that they love.
- 57:08Speaker 11: They've embraced that their coaches you know, really brought on
- 57:12Speaker 11: to them and and they they've all bought into that.
- 57:14Speaker 11: And so you know, I think you have to just
- 57:17Speaker 11: again for us.
- 57:19Speaker 5: People want to make a big deal out of the
- 57:20Speaker 5: line change and all that.
- 57:22Speaker 11: Like we're fine with it. Like it's it's the horn sounds.
- 57:26Speaker 11: You look over there and go, Okay, did my girl
- 57:28Speaker 11: check out or not? I mean, that's just what you
- 57:30Speaker 11: got to do. And then my staffle well they'll all
- 57:32Speaker 11: be over all over it, going, hey, you got her,
- 57:34Speaker 11: you got her, you got her. So it's just a
- 57:36Speaker 11: it's really not that big a deal, but it likes
- 57:39Speaker 11: people like to make that the topic of the day
- 57:42Speaker 11: when you play them, But at the end of the day,
- 57:44Speaker 11: they've been doing it all year, and when you've had
- 57:47Speaker 11: experience dealing with it, you know, a lot of times y'all,
- 57:50Speaker 11: even in transition, you don't typically get matched up with
- 57:53Speaker 11: who your garden.
- 57:54Speaker 5: You just sometimes you're in scramble mode.
- 57:56Speaker 11: So I think the biggest pick, the biggest thing in
- 57:59Speaker 11: the biggest picture, is knowing what number you're looking at
- 58:03Speaker 11: and knowing the scout. It ain't just about who you
- 58:06Speaker 11: were supposed to guard. It's about everybody on that roster
- 58:10Speaker 11: and who can and who can't.
- 58:11Speaker 8: For this time around, what is it like to play
- 58:14Speaker 8: head coach Kim Caldwell.
- 58:16Speaker 3: You know, earlier in the season, she wasn't there.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I think she's having a baby.
- 58:20Speaker 3: What'd you like to play her in a tournament?
- 58:21Speaker 11: Now?
- 58:23Speaker 5: Well, I don't know.
- 58:23Speaker 11: I think that was the same team. She just wasn't
- 58:26Speaker 11: on the bench. She had her trusted assistant that's been
- 58:29Speaker 11: with her a long time calling the shots that night,
- 58:33Speaker 11: as well as the rest of the staff. So you know,
- 58:38Speaker 11: I don't I don't think it'll be any different. I
- 58:41Speaker 11: think when you go back and look at the game,
- 58:43Speaker 11: they played the same way they've played all year long.
- 58:45Speaker 11: So for us, it's it's who's on the floor. Like
- 58:49Speaker 11: I don't play, she doesn't play. It's the kids on
- 58:52Speaker 11: the floor and your kids who've got to make plays.
- 58:54Speaker 11: And so I think for us, we've got to go
- 58:57Speaker 11: out and do the exact same, you know, try to
- 59:00Speaker 11: duplicate what we did.
- 59:01Speaker 5: We didn't turn the ball over. We had twelve turnovers total,
- 59:04Speaker 5: and so if.
- 59:04Speaker 11: You can limit that, and then we've got to cut
- 59:06Speaker 11: down on a couple other things that we need to
- 59:08Speaker 11: clean up. But other than that, we've just we've got
- 59:11Speaker 11: to go be who we are and I think at
- 59:13Speaker 11: the end of the day, that'll give us a chance.
- 59:15Speaker 3: I think I think.
- 59:16Speaker 15: Last year, at this time of year, probably the biggest
- 59:18Speaker 15: problem with your teammate has just been depth.
- 59:20Speaker 3: Together it was heard which had three guards.
- 59:22Speaker 5: Yeah, a year later, how do you feel about.
- 59:24Speaker 3: Your depth and just the amount of players are going.
- 59:26Speaker 15: To be able to play it needed?
- 59:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I love my depth.
- 59:28Speaker 11: Obviously, our depth at guard has been something that's been
- 59:31Speaker 11: real positive for us all year. Obviously, our two headed monster,
- 59:35Speaker 11: the depth there has been special, you know. Uh, so
- 59:40Speaker 11: we're we're I think in a much better place. You know,
- 59:44Speaker 11: this time last year, I think we were playing four
- 59:46Speaker 11: guards at three positions, you know, and uh and so,
- 59:50Speaker 11: but we had a lot of size. And but then
- 59:52Speaker 11: Taylor was in and out. She was concussed for the
- 59:55Speaker 11: first game and then came back and played in the
- 59:58Speaker 11: Elite eight game. But when you it out all week
- 1:00:00Speaker 11: and then you don't play in that first game you
- 1:00:03Speaker 11: get back in, you're rusty. And so you know, it's
- 1:00:06Speaker 11: been good to have a healthy tailor. I told her,
- 1:00:09Speaker 11: you know last year in our exit means the biggest
- 1:00:11Speaker 11: thing for you is we got to keep you healthy,
- 1:00:14Speaker 11: get you healthy, keep you healthy. And we got it
- 1:00:16Speaker 11: tough enough. And boy, she's embraced that. You have to
- 1:00:19Speaker 11: really tip your hat to Taylor because she's way different.
- 1:00:22Speaker 11: She's a different kid, and she's matured, she's toughened up,
- 1:00:26Speaker 11: and that's why she's going to have a chance to
- 1:00:28Speaker 11: play at the next level. I mean, she's somebody that's
- 1:00:31Speaker 11: on a lot of people's radar and she's up for
- 1:00:33Speaker 11: the Lisa Leslie Award. That says enough right there that
- 1:00:36Speaker 11: she's looked at as one of the five best five
- 1:00:38Speaker 11: players in the country. And I expect the very same
- 1:00:40Speaker 11: thing for Kyla next year. She's going to be looked
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: at in the very same way. So those two have
- 1:00:45Speaker 11: been really special for us. And again the depth at
- 1:00:48Speaker 11: five and the depth at guard really has really I
- 1:00:51Speaker 11: think made us special.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: If you had over.
- 1:00:53Speaker 11: Depth in this team, probably had as much depth. But
- 1:00:58Speaker 11: this seems you know, again, that's why I'm excited about them.
- 1:01:01Speaker 11: We've I think the biggest thing is we've just had
- 1:01:03Speaker 11: to piece together that four position, you know, whether we
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: play a four guard lineup or jockeling has had to
- 1:01:08Speaker 11: go from the three to the four, and and you know,
- 1:01:12Speaker 11: trying to bring justice along as fast as we can
- 1:01:14Speaker 11: and and so it's just been a you know, we
- 1:01:17Speaker 11: kind of hamn't egged it, you know, all year and
- 1:01:20Speaker 11: uh so, uh again, if if you if you can,
- 1:01:24Speaker 11: if we can continue to develop that position and everybody
- 1:01:28Speaker 11: else does their job, again, you've got a chance.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: The thing about this time.
- 1:01:32Speaker 11: Of year, you you cannot afford to have that one
- 1:01:36Speaker 11: bad night because everybody's good. And again not to take
- 1:01:39Speaker 11: anything from NC State a year ago, but if you
- 1:01:41Speaker 11: remember in that game last year, we we missed a
- 1:01:44Speaker 11: ton of shots we have made all year long early
- 1:01:47Speaker 11: in that game, and we kind of got behind the
- 1:01:49Speaker 11: hate ball. So we got to continue to be us
- 1:01:52Speaker 11: do what we do. We took care of the ball
- 1:01:54Speaker 11: this past weekend. We've got to continue to take care
- 1:01:56Speaker 11: of the ball. This is I said this before. It's
- 1:01:58Speaker 11: one of my better shooting teams. It seems to be
- 1:02:01Speaker 11: a topic of conversation, but we have shooting drills that
- 1:02:06Speaker 11: the standard is way higher than it's ever been for
- 1:02:08Speaker 11: any other team, and so you know, we don't turn
- 1:02:11Speaker 11: the ball over, we're going to have a chance to
- 1:02:13Speaker 11: make shots. Going back to the mass Ups conversation, I know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 11: talking to the growth in the locker room after the game,
- 1:02:20Speaker 11: they mentioned how that if they want to emphasis against Tennessee,
- 1:02:22Speaker 11: knowing who live the court one, what they can do.
- 1:02:25Speaker 11: You feel like Ry kind of mentioned they may have
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: struggled with that in the first game a little bit.
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: So how have y'all kind of emphasize that throughout this
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: weekend and knowing disc out like that.
- 1:02:33Speaker 11: Yeah, so that'll be a point of emphasis for us again.
- 1:02:35Speaker 11: We'll we'll have some line changes to mimic games, you know,
- 1:02:39Speaker 11: in practice, and we'll have the right numbers on the
- 1:02:42Speaker 11: right jerseys on for guys and practice players, and so
- 1:02:45Speaker 11: we'll have to be able to identify, Hey, that's so,
- 1:02:48Speaker 11: and so, that's so, and so that's so, and so
- 1:02:51Speaker 11: she can she can't, she does this, she does that,
- 1:02:53Speaker 11: and so again, when you go to film with us,
- 1:02:57Speaker 11: the kids all have notebooks. We take notes before we
- 1:03:01Speaker 11: ever start film. It's a note taking thing. And I
- 1:03:06Speaker 11: kind of I have explained this to them early on.
- 1:03:09Speaker 11: I'm a note taker. I go to a business I
- 1:03:11Speaker 11: go to a head coach's meeting, or a meeting with
- 1:03:13Speaker 11: administrators or any meeting.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: I have my style.
- 1:03:17Speaker 11: I'm a note taker, and I try to convey that
- 1:03:20Speaker 11: to them because if you write it down, it just
- 1:03:22Speaker 11: seems like you have a better chance to retain it.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: And so we take notes. And so I got a
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: whole tablet full of notes that will.
- 1:03:29Speaker 11: Start film with today, and they'll take them down, write
- 1:03:32Speaker 11: them down, you know. And I think our kids have
- 1:03:36Speaker 11: learned over the course of time.
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: If he says it, write it down. And so we.
- 1:03:40Speaker 11: Talk about that and then we'll go to the film
- 1:03:42Speaker 11: and we'll show them exactly boom boom, boom boom what
- 1:03:45Speaker 11: we're talking about and why we're talking about it.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: All right, So there is Longworns head coach Vic Schaeffer
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: talking about his team getting ready to take on Tennessee
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: for the second time this year. You eat me here
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: back on January twenty third, is the Thursday night that was.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: The deal where.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: The game time got pulled forward by an hour. It
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: was supposed to be an eight o'clock tip. Is the
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: back end of a doubleheader with South Carolina and LSU
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: the front in, but they had all kinds of snow
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: in Louisiana and they had to push back the South
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Carolina LSU game to the weekend, So for television, they
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: pulled forward the start time of that Texas Tennessee game
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: from eight o'clock to seven o'clock. In the long Warns
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: won that game maybe to seventy six. All right, we'll
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: be back to wrap up hour number two here on
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: thirteen under the zone. Craig Way and the producer Cameron
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Parker alongside. We're happy to be here today. Tomorrow back
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: on the road flying with the Texas women's basketball team
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: at Birmingham, Alabama. They will be in action on Saturday
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: afternoon against Tennessee and you'll be able to hear that
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: game here on the zone Saturday afternoon. It'll be a
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: little bit of switching because this is the weekend we
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: start bringing you also Round Rock Express Baseball and they
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: have a game Friday night, and so Friday nights Texas
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Long Horn Baseball game against Missouri six o'clock first pitch
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: can be heard on one of three point one FM,
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: as well as on all the app connections we've talked about,
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: connecting through the iHeartRadio app and then of course obviously
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: Texas Longhorns app and Longern Network app those as well
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: and online at Texas Long Runs dot com. That's where
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: other ways to be able to hear the baseball broadcast
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: throughout the weekend This weekend will be on one of
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: three point one FM. The women's game Saturday afternoon and
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: so therefore it will be cleared and out of the
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: way before the Round Rock Express game. It takes place
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: on Saturday evening in Tacoma, and that's why the switch
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: for this weekend. And then on Monday, the Texas women
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: if they reached the championship, the Elite eight game, it
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: would be at six o'clock and you would hear that
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: game here on the Zone as well, because Triple A
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Baseball takes Mondays off, so the Express would not be
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: an actual Monday. So there's that, and we're going to
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: hear more from Vick Schaefer, but also coming up in
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: a few minutes, we're going to visit with Ty Harrington
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: to talk from college baseball with him.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Long run baseball looking good.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Twenty and three rated as high as number three in
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: the national polls by I think It's Baseball America that
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: has Texas number three, Perfect Game As Texas number five,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: and then D one Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Riders Association,
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: and the ESPN USA Today Coaches poll has Texas at
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: number seven, so then in the top ten all the
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: way around, and they go to Columbia to play Missouri
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: this weekend. Of course, they swept that conference series in
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Starkville against Mississippi State, then took two out of three
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: at home against LSU. They dropped the first game to LSU,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: and remember that happened after they dropped the midweek game
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: to UTSA, so they dropped too in a row, and
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: since then they won three straight, so they're twenty and
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: three going into that series. Beginning on Friday night on
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: the text liner NCB, he says that nineteen fifty nine
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: song you just played was used in the movie La
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Bamba during the Richie Vallens funeral scene. Yet, because that's
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: when Richie Vallens and the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: all went down in the plane crash Stormlake, Iowa. I
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: believe it was in nineteen fifty nine. On that Okay,
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: we had a question from someone on the text line
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: who asked if there was He said, how many colleges
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: still had both the men's and women's teams in the
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: postseason and he ends it with GMG, which means Goman Green.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: So it's obviously a North Texas fan in North Texas
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: did win its n IT game on the road quarterfinal
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: win at Oklahoma State last night sixteen one to fifty nine.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: So they're going to the semifinal. Remember they won the
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: n IT two years ago and that title came in
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: twenty twenty three. That was in Las Vegas. Now the
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: tournament has shifted to Indianapolis, Craig, and they won that
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: game and still watered. Yeah, it was supposed to be
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: played at North Texas. Did you hear the story about
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: why they played at Oklahoma State. Wasn't it an on
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: campus thing that the administrative staff had booked for the
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: super pit and they didn't change it.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: They had a staff luncheon, that's it, and they could
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: not move it. Yeah, a staff luncheon. That was silly.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: Fortunately the ME and Green won the game. So then
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: going on to there.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Okay, So to address the question, somebody asked how many
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: programs I still have both their men's and women's basketball
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: teams playing? So here we are to count them off.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: First of all, we'll go to the NCAA men's side.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: I see Duke, I see ole Miss, I see Florida
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Texas Tech, because they have their women's teams in the WBIT.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: Tennessee and I think that's it.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: All right, there's five there, But just to be sure,
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: let me check the women's both the w B I
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: T and the w n I T. There's two women's
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: postseason tournaments.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: There's the UH.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Women's inn I T and the men's n I T,
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: and the the w B I T, which is really
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: kind of the more recognized tournament is the w B
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: I T one.
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: So UH on the.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Women's side of mentioned ole Miss uh, and I think
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: that's the and Duke are the only women's out of
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: the NCAA tournament.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: So then if you.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Go further down the w b i T down on
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: its quarterfinals, Texas Tech Florida is one because they're playing
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Texas Tech tomorrow night in the quarterfinals. Let's see Gonzaga, Minnesota, Belmont, Jan's, Madison, Villain.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: Neva Portland. So that's it for the wb I T.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: And then for the women's w n I T, they're
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: still at their I guess they're at their round of
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: sixteen playing tonight. Washington State and North Dakota State. North
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Texas is in the wn IT as well as the
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: men's in IT T. Aveline Christy, Illinois State is in
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: the CBI Championship game tonight. Lynden Wood, Louisiana Tech, Southern Indiana, Buffalo,
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: Rutgers College at Charleston, Dukene, Clee, Cleveland State is playing
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Illinois State in the CBI.
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: Championship game tonight, and then there's Butler and Pretty Fort Wayne.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: So both Cleveland State and Illinois State are still in
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: the Women's in IT and they play in the CBI
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Championship tonight. So there's there's that men's in it. North
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Texas will play the winner of UC Irvine and UA B.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: If they play UA B will be the fourth time
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: they will have played this year twice in the regular
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: season and they split those. UAD beat North Texas in
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: the American Conference Tournament semifinals, and they're playing UC r Ryan.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: The other side of that bracket, Chattanooga will play the
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: winner of Kent State in Loyola Chicago. So right now
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I'm looking at six teams. That are six schools that
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: have both their men's and women's teams still alive. And
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: then there's that other tournament. I wanted that one other
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: men's tournament, which is called what's it called the Crown
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: College GM The Crown, right, the College Basketball Crown, That's
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: what it's called. And it doesn't even start until Monday.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: They say, how can that be? They wanted to wait
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: until it got through the Sweet sixteen. Fox is really
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: the big money behind this and it's at the MGM
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Grant in Vegas. So the teams that are in this
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: is men's tournament. The teams that are in it are
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Utah is playing Butler. There's another team Butler, So you
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: can count that that's seven teams. George Washington's playing State,
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Nebraska's playing Arizona State, Georgetown is playing Washington State on
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: one side of the brack on the other side, to
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: Paul against Cincinnati, Oregon State against UCF, Colorado against Villanova,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: and Tulane against sc SC men and women are So
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: that's eight eight.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: That's the answer to the question.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: There are eight schools that still have two teams, both
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: a men's team and women's team playing post season basketball
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: of some sort. Not all in the NCAAA, not even
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: all in the NITS, but with all of the postseason
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: basketball going on, I bet a lot of people don't
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: know there was still that much postseason basketball going on
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: all Right, coming up, we're going to talk some college
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: baseball with Ty Harrington when we continue on thirteen under
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: the Zone. He's Ty Harrington, of course, twenty years a
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: college baseball head coach at Texas State, former Longhorn assistant
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: coach lifetime. Longhorn now is worked his way nicely into
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: the radio and television realm, but he always had a
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: good appreciation for music. Even though Ty, you been you
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: kind of had a harder rock edge to you. I
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: was surprised to discover in your formative days and your
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: misspent youth there uh at Midway High in the Greater
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: Waco area and country music.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: But have you developed an appreciation for your rock?
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: Like I have moments, I have moods and moments that
- 1:13:21Speaker 10: would dictate that I would and sing along moments like
- 1:13:24Speaker 10: everybody else.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: And I still think that.
- 1:13:26Speaker 10: I'm a you know, professional singer of some sort of
- 1:13:29Speaker 10: at least to me.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean jan's a great description.
- 1:13:35Speaker 14: Yes, I'm a country boy, good old boy that does
- 1:13:38Speaker 14: love country music.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: But do you have.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: A love for rock or all music?
- 1:13:45Speaker 10: And to be honest with you, uh, yeah, play a
- 1:13:48Speaker 10: little more anti rock than most people.
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: Probably would think.
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: Uh you know again, I.
- 1:13:55Speaker 10: Go people offening out the like if somebody ask young
- 1:13:57Speaker 10: Glory is Ascue was your favorite band?
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Favorite? This and that?
- 1:14:01Speaker 14: And outside of you know, you know several you know,
- 1:14:04Speaker 14: local country artists and you know you get to listen
- 1:14:07Speaker 14: to often enough.
- 1:14:08Speaker 16: But you know, led Zeppelin if I went back to
- 1:14:11Speaker 16: my lifestyle and time was my favorite band.
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: See that always amazes me.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: I mean it does mean too, it does mean to
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: it once.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: So I mean that's just how you roll it. I
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: sort of say that's how you roll in Woodway, But
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: did you live in Woodway or Hewitt when you went
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: to Midway?
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: I did?
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: I lived in Woodway. I did.
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: I lived in Woodway.
- 1:14:32Speaker 14: We were one of the newer additions way back in
- 1:14:35Speaker 14: seventy five and ninth that'd be.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: Nineteen seventy five.
- 1:14:40Speaker 10: And in our house. Find our house and you can
- 1:14:44Speaker 10: walk all the way into the lake. Looked was several
- 1:14:47Speaker 10: miles through the woods.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: If you try to do it now, you'll be jumping
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: for rooftop to rooftop.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:14:53Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, but yeah, wood Way was in the stage drive.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: Now, that's not to say that we and go to.
- 1:15:00Speaker 10: Waco and drive up and down Valley Mills Drive like
- 1:15:02Speaker 10: everybody else did.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you were cruising, all right. So so.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Would it be safe to say that wood Way is
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: a lot different now that Chip and Jojo have sunk
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: their palls into it.
- 1:15:15Speaker 10: It's it's it's easy to say that Waco in general
- 1:15:18Speaker 10: is different.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Uh, And would will be too?
- 1:15:21Speaker 10: I mean yeah, I mean with the with the growth
- 1:15:23Speaker 10: of what they brought to the table.
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: You know, then there was that explosion of Baylor.
- 1:15:28Speaker 10: Athletics chewing football, and it had an impact it did.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: On Waco as well.
- 1:15:35Speaker 10: Kind of combined chipping and football took on for Baylor,
- 1:15:38Speaker 10: you know, and then there was you know that was there.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: And there, and I think I had a big background.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Now it's it's Waco has continued to grow.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: All right, let me uh, let me have you jump
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: in uh with your thoughts first of all on uh,
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna go to the mid of major route to
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: start with.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: First of all, and.
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: Ask you how good do you see?
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Uh? UTSA right now?
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: They got obviously they had a big performance against Texas
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: State and they had the twelve inning win against Longhorns.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: They beat Texas A and m give let me give
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: me give get your thoughts on UTSA and also Texas
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: State right now.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: Okay, let's start with.
- 1:16:29Speaker 16: Yeah, Tetcha State and then and it's look, they've been struggling.
- 1:16:33Speaker 16: I know people sometimes going in here and they can
- 1:16:34Speaker 16: always say it's an excuse, but the reality is they've
- 1:16:36Speaker 16: been They've got they've had four players out and it
- 1:16:41Speaker 16: is I mean, you know, look, I tell people this.
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: This is a fair statement. I don't expect everybody to
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: understand it. I know you understand it when I say.
- 1:16:48Speaker 10: This, but you know, some people will use to stay well,
- 1:16:51Speaker 10: next man up, right, well, the next man up often enough,
- 1:16:54Speaker 10: there's a reason.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: Why he was the next man up, and uh. And
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: so they've been injured a little bit. They played better
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: last weekend.
- 1:17:01Speaker 10: They threw the ball better last weekend against Arkansas State, and.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Then the UTSA game last night. Actually, believe it or not,
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: they were on the verge of b and beat.
- 1:17:13Speaker 10: In seven innings and then they battled back and did
- 1:17:17Speaker 10: the tying run come on at the night. So hopefully
- 1:17:20Speaker 10: they're getting some I know they're getting some of those
- 1:17:22Speaker 10: injury guys back, So that is going to help and
- 1:17:25Speaker 10: they need it now with Coastal Carolina coming in this weekend.
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: Coastal is the top twenty five teen.
- 1:17:31Speaker 10: Have been up and down, but the Coastal is better
- 1:17:33Speaker 10: on the madle this year than.
- 1:17:34Speaker 16: What they've been offensively, and they're usually.
- 1:17:37Speaker 10: Historically in the opposite. Now let's move switch gears and
- 1:17:40Speaker 10: move the UTSA.
- 1:17:42Speaker 16: You know, pet Homer is a tremendous coach, by the way,
- 1:17:46Speaker 16: and has been.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: For a long time.
- 1:17:47Speaker 16: He was with Wayne Graham for a long time as
- 1:17:49Speaker 16: an assistant coach.
- 1:17:52Speaker 10: He's one of those coaches that does.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: What comes to his mind, whatever he feels like is
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: going to work in that moment. It does not matter
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: to him.
- 1:17:59Speaker 16: If he feels like that, it's not it goes against
- 1:18:01Speaker 16: the book, goes.
- 1:18:02Speaker 14: Against the green, whatever that book is or whoever wrote
- 1:18:05Speaker 14: that book.
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: He's willing to.
- 1:18:08Speaker 10: Do whatever it takes, and in his mind he runs
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: his offense and it's pitching that way. What I mean
- 1:18:13Speaker 10: by that, he's leveled to pull a picture out in
- 1:18:14Speaker 10: the middle of the cow, he's leveled to put a hitter.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: I mean, it's a lot of different things. So he's
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: a really really good coach. I think there.
- 1:18:21Speaker 10: When I saw them against Texans, I watched the Ale
- 1:18:25Speaker 10: team of that night, they were really physical.
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: My recollection f them when you go through their lineup,
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: and then they kept bringing arms.
- 1:18:33Speaker 10: And now against Texas, they brought their starters back, some
- 1:18:36Speaker 10: of their weekend starters back, right, You reported that and
- 1:18:39Speaker 10: you saw that. But they also were able to finish
- 1:18:42Speaker 10: with guys that you know, if you go in there
- 1:18:44Speaker 10: and compare what you know, the velostity looks like there
- 1:18:46Speaker 10: are a lot of Power five schools. It's at ninety two
- 1:18:49Speaker 10: to ninety seven range, right, Well, they kept rolling guys
- 1:18:52Speaker 10: out there, one right after another, and there was probably
- 1:18:55Speaker 10: a little bit of a juice and the energy involved
- 1:18:57Speaker 10: it too, if they were fired up. But everything looked
- 1:19:00Speaker 10: it was ninety three to ninety five as well, and
- 1:19:03Speaker 10: what commanded the breakers.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: And so I do think they're good. They've played. They
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: played well on the road as well.
- 1:19:10Speaker 10: And oftentimes, like it is for a lot of people,
- 1:19:12Speaker 10: if they stay healthy, I think they're a team to continue.
- 1:19:15Speaker 10: I do they show me enough offensively, And it doesn't
- 1:19:19Speaker 10: mean again.
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: That somebody doesn't get hurt.
- 1:19:20Speaker 14: You know, who knows what happens.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: But I thought they handled the ball well.
- 1:19:24Speaker 10: Obviously I know them to be well coach, and I
- 1:19:27Speaker 10: thought they were physical on the offensive part of the game.
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: That they can score from home plate and they can.
- 1:19:33Speaker 10: Score with two outs because they have enough balance to
- 1:19:36Speaker 10: create offense.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: One alta talking college baseball with high Herington here on
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: thirteen hundreds, All right, ty long WRN fans understandably excited,
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: and rightly so. They're twenty and three and they're tied
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: the top the conference stag standings at five and one.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Now I throw this in not to throw cold water
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: on anything, but it's simply as a reminder of the
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: new world that they are in h They are five
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: and one in the league and they're twenty and three overall.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Arkansas is five and one in the league and twenty
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: three and three overall. Tennessee is five and one in
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: the league and twenty three and two overall, and Georgia's
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: five and one in the league and twenty five and
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: two coming off a weekend where they went to a
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: nationally ranked Florida team in Gainesville, swept all three games,
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: scored forty runs in the process eight runs Friday, seventeen,
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: Saturday fifteen Sunday. They run rule the Gators on their
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: own home field on Sunday. So the only reason why
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: I bring this up, and there's a one two, three, four,
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: five six way tie one game back of them with Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Auburn, Vanderbilt,
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: and Ole Miss is just as Jim Schlasnek would say,
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: this is the deepest waters Texas has ever collectively swam
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: in in a conference baseball season.
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: Agree, yes, one hundred percent.
- 1:20:57Speaker 14: I thought so when you say into deeper waters, I
- 1:21:01Speaker 14: mean I thought last weekend was a great representation of
- 1:21:05Speaker 14: you know, how the water starts to look and feel
- 1:21:10Speaker 14: and then when you start talking about all those teams
- 1:21:12Speaker 14: and those programs and how good they are, and it's
- 1:21:15Speaker 14: not it's not bad scheduling.
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's reality. That's who they are. And
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: it's almost like saying thing.
- 1:21:24Speaker 16: If the coach and go through your schedule, I'll try
- 1:21:26Speaker 16: out to shift too many heres here.
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: But when you're the coach, you start to schedule and go, hey, look,
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: I feel like we.
- 1:21:31Speaker 16: Got a chance to win two out of three here
- 1:21:33Speaker 16: on the road.
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: We do that, that's great. If we do.
- 1:21:35Speaker 14: When you start looking at the weekends and.
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: In the sec and what that represents, man, I mean,
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: you play.
- 1:21:44Speaker 17: Bad, you got a chance to get those two favor
- 1:21:48Speaker 17: gets slopped if.
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: You play bad. And and the other piece of that
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: is if you do go through a blicken are one
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: and ever you get injured or something like that, you're
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: gonna you're gonna have some rough moments. If you don't,
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: you know, watch out or if you don't came great down,
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: what if makes you do? And it's says we're I'm
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: wild be surprised.
- 1:22:07Speaker 16: If if if it you know, if if PLEXI fees
- 1:22:09Speaker 16: a different direction with this, if they stay injury free,
- 1:22:12Speaker 16: is that it requires you to play your best.
- 1:22:17Speaker 14: It required, it demands that if you want to be
- 1:22:19Speaker 14: successful in this league and you want to get to
- 1:22:22Speaker 14: that you know, you.
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: Know you're here Kirch Flack's talking about. You got to
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: get to that fifteen.
- 1:22:26Speaker 14: Win mark in the SEC, and then you run the risk,
- 1:22:28Speaker 14: then you run the ability to be able to host
- 1:22:30Speaker 14: and you know, and be you know, on national scene
- 1:22:33Speaker 14: and do some other things right in this league in
- 1:22:35Speaker 14: the SEC.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: And and and when more in that cheer than you
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: really are.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: But the reality is you have to play your bet
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: and that's it. I mean, ain't got to be good enough,
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: which which Texas is, but you got.
- 1:22:47Speaker 16: And you got to stay healthy, which they are right now.
- 1:22:50Speaker 16: And you have to play your best when you line up.
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: If you don't make, you gonn not do sock zones.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Well.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Uh And the only other reason to bring this up
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: is to let you give a little bit of perspective
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: on who else's contender.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: Here's where I'm going with this.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: If you look at the D one pole and the
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: other poles, and there's a bunch of them in college baseball.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: For whatever reason, there's more poles in college baseball than
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: any other sport.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: But I don't know why that is, but it is.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: But in the D one Baseball poll, which many followed
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: pretty closely, the top three teams are SEC teams Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: Then you have Florida State and Oregon State and Clemson.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Then the next three are SEC teams Texas, LSU and Oklahoma.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: So six of the top nine are SEC teams. Oregon
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: is tenth, Auburn is eleventh, Alabama is twelve, So eight
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: of the top twelve are SEC. Southern Mississippi is thirteen,
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Vanderbilt is fourteen, and Ole Miss is fifteen. Ten of
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: the top fifteen are from the Southeastern Conference. So with
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: all that factored in, with everything you talked about, who
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: else do you see as being really really good and
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: would be if people were saying you take the SEC,
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: any team from the SEC or the field to win
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: in Omaha in June.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: If you just looked at.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: The rankings right now, maybe the top tendants would be
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: Florida State, Oregon State, Clemson, Oregon, Southern miss Wait Forest
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: is sixteen, Dallas Baptist is seventeen. Then you have Louisville,
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: U See, Irvine, Stanford, North Carolina, Troy, Arizona, UCLA, and
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Georgia Tech and Coastal Carolina you just mentioned it just
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: dropped out of the poll, but they're in the others
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: receiving votes.
- 1:24:44Speaker 7: So you're asking me where, see, what would be.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: The big if you were to pick a school or
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: two today to be the biggest threat, to be better
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: than than when all the smoke clears, than any of
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: those ten of the top fifteen schools that are SEC
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: schools that are ranked right now, which school or schools
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: really leap off the page to you?
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:25:08Speaker 14: Yeah, okay, Well to me, it's going to follow in
- 1:25:12Speaker 14: a lot of Tennessee, it's going to fall in line with.
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: Believe it or not, I think Florida State is really good.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: The chance to watch them on TV, I do. I
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: think they're really good.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: Walk off Grand Slam, Yeah, walk off Grand Slam. So,
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: if it was going to be someone other than an
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: SEC school other than in Tennessee or Arkansas or Georgia,
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: who looks really good right now? If you were to pick,
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: and again, like I said, Florida State is fourth in
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: the pole, Oregon State is five, Clemson is six, Oregon
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: is ten, Southern miss is thirteen. Wait, for sixteen Dallas
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: Patricks cent Anyway, those are some of the other ones
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: outside of those ten of the top fifteen, who are
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: SEC schools?
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: What school or schools do you think it all?
- 1:26:00Speaker 16: Yeah, it's gonna have to be.
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: It's gonna have to be. I saw Oregon State three
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: times early in the year. They really physical. I don't
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: know that they had the bullpen that through enough strikes
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: for me right now, but to me, it would be
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: it would have to be. You know, the Ford State.
- 1:26:21Speaker 10: I saw Clinicon too, and you know you I think
- 1:26:25Speaker 10: he made assault Clenters will do that open wekend.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: I'm not sure they were up there, uh huh, yeah.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: I think they're they're there.
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: He felt like it was the best team that they'd
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: ever assemble.
- 1:26:35Speaker 16: He felt like they were going to be a topping team.
- 1:26:39Speaker 16: Outside of that, I don't I mean, it really takes one.
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: I mean you're asking, you're asking question.
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: That's my point exactly.
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: No, No, I mean I got at you know, my
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: brain right now.
- 1:26:55Speaker 16: And just I mean, man, and the last statement you
- 1:27:02Speaker 16: made before you background to mean was Georgia is playing good.
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: Yeah, man, I just don't know. I mean, it would
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: have to be a Florida State or it'd have to be.
- 1:27:14Speaker 10: Yeah, And I've seen limited, limited of Florida State.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: Except from TV.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Clinson I did see in person.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Florida State won on a walk off Grand Slam
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: to beat Florida last night.
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: Meeting them in a midweek are there? Uh to do
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: it all?
- 1:27:29Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: Hey, I appreciate the time.
- 1:27:31Speaker 17: Uh.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: I know you've got busy things going on both in
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: San Marcos with baseball with the long words up here,
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: but I know I'll see you around the corner here
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: pretty soon, right.
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: You will.
- 1:27:42Speaker 10: Good luck with your travels, yes, and everything you've got
- 1:27:45Speaker 10: going on with my women's basketball and your coaches and
- 1:27:50Speaker 10: you know they traveling.
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: Baseball as well, and I.
- 1:27:53Speaker 17: Would sell you what you know, I think what is
- 1:27:56Speaker 17: going to happen now, I think you probably when you
- 1:27:59Speaker 17: would going to run in baseball, right, I think people
- 1:28:03Speaker 17: would kind of listen and they would.
- 1:28:05Speaker 16: Listening to you, and they would, you know, watch some
- 1:28:07Speaker 16: they would do their best to keep I think this
- 1:28:10Speaker 16: last weekend.
- 1:28:12Speaker 14: And everything everybody you see and the momentum that.
- 1:28:14Speaker 17: They had, Uh, you're gonna have a large audience again,
- 1:28:18Speaker 17: and uh, it's it's exciting, It really is and I
- 1:28:23Speaker 17: think you would agree with me.
- 1:28:24Speaker 14: Last weekend was really exciting, no doubt.
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: I have two blue woods like LSU and Texans were up.
- 1:28:31Speaker 16: It was a heavy weight fine on Saturday that was
- 1:28:35Speaker 16: an absolute heavyweight and.
- 1:28:37Speaker 14: Both teams just absolutely going at each other. And then
- 1:28:40Speaker 14: a thought Sunday and I think he's alcohol. Sunday was
- 1:28:43Speaker 14: just an incredibly fun, great college baseball game, and uh,
- 1:28:50Speaker 14: three weekend is going.
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: To be exciting. It is what it is. The SEC
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: is exactly what it's going to be, and they.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: Are, Yeah, it's gonna be great. Hey, Todd, thanks for
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: the time. I appreciate it.
- 1:29:02Speaker 10: You got it.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: You moa, thank you. That's Ty Herrington. He's right.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: I mean it's going to be very difficult for one
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: of those SEC teams to be unseated, you know, and
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: it'll be interesting to see how many teams get TOMA.
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: I know there was a lot made of fourteen SEC
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: teams making the NCAA basketball tournament. You know, ten of
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: the top fifteen ranked teams, just ranked teams or SEC
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: teams in baseball. That postseason and tournament in Hoover ought
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: to be interesting because it's single elimination, sixteen teams just
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: like the Big twelve.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back here. More from Vic Shafer
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: when we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: Let's hear some more as the Texas when we're prepared
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: to leave town tomorrow. More on this matchup with Tennessee
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: and going to the Sweet sixteen with head coach Vick Shaffer.
- 1:29:50Speaker 11: You know, Rory is really good, Shay is outstanding. Rory
- 1:29:54Speaker 11: and Shay sitting next to each other, Booker's good about it,
- 1:29:57Speaker 11: and those three are right there and they really do
- 1:29:59Speaker 11: it a job in that front row. Taylor's over there
- 1:30:02Speaker 11: as a veteran, she does a good job.
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: Those are the ones I kind of noticed because I'm close.
- 1:30:08Speaker 11: To them when we're sitting in there. But you know,
- 1:30:11Speaker 11: they've they've come to understand the importance of taking notes.
- 1:30:15Speaker 15: Yes, she how has she kind of been mentally these
- 1:30:18Speaker 15: past couple of games?
- 1:30:19Speaker 5: Not shooting the ball?
- 1:30:21Speaker 11: Wall?
- 1:30:21Speaker 15: But how have you seen her just kind of respond
- 1:30:23Speaker 15: to that adversity and practices.
- 1:30:24Speaker 11: And stem She's been great? You know, you don't she's unflappable.
- 1:30:28Speaker 11: I mean, she's just she's as solid as any kid
- 1:30:32Speaker 11: I've ever had.
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: And you don't see that. It's you know, it's not.
- 1:30:37Speaker 11: Like she's walking around going oh my god, oh my god,
- 1:30:39Speaker 11: oh my god.
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: I you know this, and that she shot fifty percent
- 1:30:42Speaker 5: in the game the other day.
- 1:30:44Speaker 11: And again the athleticism, how hard she plays, you know,
- 1:30:49Speaker 11: she just she's really somebody again that brings so much
- 1:30:53Speaker 11: to the table. You can't get tied up with one
- 1:30:55Speaker 11: thing that maybe she might not be as good at
- 1:30:58Speaker 11: as some of the other things she does. And again
- 1:31:02Speaker 11: she's shooting and in practice and making everything she looks at,
- 1:31:05Speaker 11: trust me, and so you know it'll fall.
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:31:08Speaker 11: She obviously had a big game at Missippi State late
- 1:31:10Speaker 11: in the year, made four out of six from three
- 1:31:12Speaker 11: Kit can make shots, like I think the other night
- 1:31:15Speaker 11: she took.
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: One, she rushed one from the left side on the wing.
- 1:31:20Speaker 11: Again, she just trying, you know, she wants to wants
- 1:31:23Speaker 11: to help us, and she's trying to make a shot.
- 1:31:25Speaker 11: But that one was probably hotly contested. But other than that,
- 1:31:30Speaker 11: she is she understands what a good shot is in
- 1:31:34Speaker 11: time and place. That's the biggest thing with young kids
- 1:31:37Speaker 11: is time and place.
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: And so you know, Jock took.
- 1:31:41Speaker 11: One from the perimeter the other night early in the
- 1:31:43Speaker 11: clock out there at the three point line.
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: I'm like, that's not time and place.
- 1:31:47Speaker 11: And this is something that my staff continues to impart
- 1:31:51Speaker 11: on our kids, is just trying to educate them on
- 1:31:54Speaker 11: time and place. And so again, Shay is again she's unflappable.
- 1:31:59Speaker 11: She's as solid as anybody, and from a mental capacity,
- 1:32:04Speaker 11: she's as tough as males.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: You ever shot.
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: I mean, I live with it. I live and die
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: with it during the game.
- 1:32:10Speaker 11: If y'all pay attention, I mean, I'm over there agonizing
- 1:32:13Speaker 11: with every turnover, every shot, I mean everything, I'm I'm
- 1:32:18Speaker 11: I'm you know, and to a fault. Really, I I uh,
- 1:32:22Speaker 11: you know, I have to kind of watch myself a
- 1:32:23Speaker 11: little bit because that can affect you know, who's on
- 1:32:26Speaker 11: the floor, and I don't want to do that. I'm
- 1:32:27Speaker 11: not there to do that, but I'm just you know,
- 1:32:31Speaker 11: uh Rory and I joke about it all the time.
- 1:32:33Speaker 11: I live and die with every movement that kid makes
- 1:32:35Speaker 11: because she's an extension of me.
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: And you know, when.
- 1:32:40Speaker 11: She makes a great play or or might have a turnover,
- 1:32:44Speaker 11: like I just I agonize with all of that. And again,
- 1:32:50Speaker 11: it's you know, it's not like it's just something that
- 1:32:54Speaker 11: I have to kind of evaluate myself on sometimes.
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: But it's not just her.
- 1:32:58Speaker 11: I do it with all of them, you know, Taylor,
- 1:33:01Speaker 11: missus a bunny. I'm I'm over there probably having a
- 1:33:04Speaker 11: conniption in your eyes. But you know, when you work
- 1:33:07Speaker 11: so hard to get those looks and get those shots,
- 1:33:10Speaker 11: you gotta cash them. And the other night, you know,
- 1:33:13Speaker 11: we I think you know, we had a chance to
- 1:33:17Speaker 11: feed the post. We turned it down. We had two
- 1:33:20Speaker 11: in the lane, gave them our numbers and we turned
- 1:33:22Speaker 11: it down. Well, that's the mentality of a post player, y'all.
- 1:33:26Speaker 11: You go down there, you lay on people, you're rubbing
- 1:33:28Speaker 11: shoulders and exchanging sweat. You get a tough rebound, you
- 1:33:32Speaker 11: throw it, you run the floor. You go down there
- 1:33:34Speaker 11: and post and some guard don't.
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: Throw you the ball.
- 1:33:37Speaker 11: That's how tough mentally that your bigs have to be,
- 1:33:41Speaker 11: because you just did all the dirty work, ran down
- 1:33:44Speaker 11: the floor, and they don't reward you. And then so
- 1:33:47Speaker 11: now you've got to go back down there and do
- 1:33:49Speaker 11: that again, and then hope that you run the floor
- 1:33:51Speaker 11: again and they reward you. And and so you know,
- 1:33:54Speaker 11: I'm living and dying with that too. So I see
- 1:33:57Speaker 11: it all, and I live and die with it all.
- 1:33:59Speaker 11: But as I've told my team, part of my part
- 1:34:05Speaker 11: of my living with this team is that I know
- 1:34:08Speaker 11: how good they are. I know what the opportunity is
- 1:34:11Speaker 11: in front of them, and they're good enough, and I
- 1:34:13Speaker 11: want it badly for them. Again, as somebody you know,
- 1:34:18Speaker 11: I was talking to SEC Radio this morning and they
- 1:34:20Speaker 11: were talking about do you talk to your kids about
- 1:34:25Speaker 11: taking things for granted? You know, when you see something
- 1:34:28Speaker 11: like what happened with ju Ju, which your heart goes
- 1:34:30Speaker 11: out to her and the whole team, do you talk
- 1:34:34Speaker 11: about that. I'm like, guys, I talk about it three
- 1:34:36Speaker 11: four times a week, Like we circle up before practice
- 1:34:39Speaker 11: every day and I'm telling them or after practice, and
- 1:34:43Speaker 11: I'm telling them, you don't you think this is what
- 1:34:46Speaker 11: we do because it is what we've done, but you
- 1:34:49Speaker 11: don't take it for granted, Like these times are fleeting.
- 1:34:54Speaker 11: I know we've done this now a bunch and you think, well,
- 1:34:58Speaker 11: it's just what we do, and it is what we do,
- 1:35:00Speaker 11: but you just can't take it for granted because you
- 1:35:02Speaker 11: never know when the next hiccup's going to be. And
- 1:35:06Speaker 11: the same as true injury wise. You know, when I
- 1:35:09Speaker 11: tell them, don't take this for granted, y'all. This team
- 1:35:12Speaker 11: is special, This opportunity is special, This time in your
- 1:35:16Speaker 11: life is special.
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: Don't take it for granted.
- 1:35:20Speaker 11: In Royal Go yep, don't you know, because you know
- 1:35:24Speaker 11: she's been through it, Amogo yep.
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: Don't you know. Jordana yep, don't you know?
- 1:35:30Speaker 11: Because you just you hope that day never happens, but
- 1:35:34Speaker 11: you never know.
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: So man live.
- 1:35:37Speaker 11: It each and every day because you just don't know
- 1:35:42Speaker 11: when this opportunity comes again.
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: Again. We've done it.
- 1:35:46Speaker 11: We've been in this position for out the five years
- 1:35:48Speaker 11: we've been here. We did it at Mississippi State, have
- 1:35:53Speaker 11: me straight years.
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: But you can't take it for granted.
- 1:35:57Speaker 11: I would say that to this group standing here, you
- 1:35:59Speaker 11: young people, you don't take this time in your life
- 1:36:03Speaker 11: for granted because unfortunately, in life, things happen, and they
- 1:36:09Speaker 11: happen to good people. And so you when that happens again,
- 1:36:15Speaker 11: remember it's not it's how you respond that defines you.
- 1:36:19Speaker 11: You look at Rory Harmon to me, how she's responded
- 1:36:24Speaker 11: to this definds who she is. It says everything you
- 1:36:28Speaker 11: need to know about Rory Harmon. And again you've got
- 1:36:32Speaker 11: to give her a ton of credit.
- 1:36:34Speaker 15: Get this a little off topic, but in the past,
- 1:36:37Speaker 15: you've had a pretty good working relationship with Chris and Rodney,
- 1:36:39Speaker 15: and I'm kind of wondering a Sean coming in. You
- 1:36:41Speaker 15: know your thoughts on that and how important is it
- 1:36:44Speaker 15: tend to be synonymous with the coaches on the other side.
- 1:36:46Speaker 5: Of this facility.
- 1:36:47Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean I've always had great relationships everywhere I've
- 1:36:50Speaker 11: been with the men's head coach, and again, they have
- 1:36:54Speaker 11: their life and their things going on, and we certainly
- 1:36:57Speaker 11: do ours as well. But again, you know, Rodney was
- 1:37:01Speaker 11: someone that I have deep respect and admiration for, and
- 1:37:05Speaker 11: I know Sean is a great coach, and I haven't
- 1:37:08Speaker 11: had a chance to meet him, but I know he's
- 1:37:11Speaker 11: asked our administration about me, and and so there'll be
- 1:37:15Speaker 11: a chance when we have a chance to meet each
- 1:37:17Speaker 11: other and visit. I know he's going to have to
- 1:37:20Speaker 11: hit the ground running, and he knows I'm involved with
- 1:37:22Speaker 11: what I'm doing right now. But it is really important
- 1:37:25Speaker 11: to answer your question. You know, we need to work together,
- 1:37:28Speaker 11: whether it's on practice times or gain. You know, we
- 1:37:32Speaker 11: get this calendar, y'all, and most places it's just hey,
- 1:37:36Speaker 11: what days do you.
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: Want to play? What day does you want to play.
- 1:37:38Speaker 11: Well, it's what days you want to play, what do
- 1:37:41Speaker 11: you want to play and what day is it available,
- 1:37:43Speaker 11: you know, and so we really have to work closely
- 1:37:45Speaker 11: on all that.
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: So you know, I'm i'm i'm i'm.
- 1:37:49Speaker 11: I'm confident that Sewan will be great and be great
- 1:37:53Speaker 11: to work with, and again excited for for them and
- 1:37:57Speaker 11: their opportunity, and I'm here to help any way I can.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: There it is Vic Schaffer with some wards there of
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: excitement and encouragement for the new men's head coach Sean
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: Miller coming in to lead the Texas men's program. We'll
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: be back to wrap up today's edition of the program
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: here on thirteen Out of the Zone
