- 0:13Miller and Condon on a football Friday.

- 0:20back at it until 2:00 here today.
- 0:22At that time, we'll turn it over to off the bench.
- 0:24Lucas Strain and Sean Roberts at that time from 2:00 until 5.
- 0:28Overtime Iowa from 5:00 until 6. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:32busy program I hear this afternoon.
- 0:34We'll start at 12:25 with our buddy Bama.
- 0:36Bob Talk. College football recap last
- 0:39night with Bama. Preview tonight with Bama at
- 0:4212:25. Jeff Hughes writes the Bear's
- 0:44blog, owns the Bear's blog. We'll talk about the Bear's and
- 0:48the Packers with Jeff Hughes coming up at 12:45.
- 0:51Look forward to that game. It's tomorrow night we have, I'm
- 0:54just looking at the schedule to my left here.
- 0:56We do not have that game. The Iowa Wild play.
- 0:59What we do have, the early game, which is Carolina and the Rams
- 1:03as we'll have that one here. If you're out and about and
- 1:05driving around, you'll be able to hear that one at least for
- 1:08those of you listening to KX&O in the 1:00 hour.
- 1:12Tom Caker. We'll start things off on Iowa.
- 1:14We'll do the latest on the portal.
- 1:16We'll preview Illinois with Tom coming up here at one O 2 at 115
- 1:22Eugene repay covers Iowa State. Iowa State's got, you know,
- 1:26sneaker than than on looks on the surface type of game with
- 1:29the Cowboys in town tomorrow. I was thinking the exact same.
- 1:32Good. Afternoon, by the way.
- 1:34Yes, hello. To you, as I was going through
- 1:37and looking a little bit at Oklahoma State last night, I was
- 1:39like, you know, this squad, it's not just that they're off to a
- 1:43good start, they're 13 to 2. But I heard something from Steve
- 1:47Lutz, who's been around for a while.
- 1:49He's about Western Kentucky, been an assistant coach for a
- 1:52long time and let's mentioned in the preseason, going back to
- 1:57media day, we're going to be a lot better people think.
- 1:59Really. Yeah, he was pretty confident
- 2:01with his team in year #2. Now is that just bravado in year
- 2:05#2? Well, maybe somewhat, but you
- 2:06know what? I think he's backed it up.
- 2:08I mean, this team's two losses, Oklahoma, they lost to Texas
- 2:11Tech, but last time out was Tuesday night, they were at
- 2:14home. But UCF has got a pretty decent
- 2:16resume in their own right. They came in and beat him a
- 2:18double digit. So this is a better than
- 2:21average. Look, Iowa State should win the
- 2:23basketball. Yeah, I'm not trying to plant
- 2:25that seed. I'm just saying that Oklahoma
- 2:27State is going to be maybe a little bit more difficult.
- 2:30Have you seen the Ken Palm advance line?
- 2:32We anticipate line. Yes, it is 20.
- 2:37It's that big. It's. 20, which I was really
- 2:39surprised by because I went there after I was starting to do
- 2:43a little research on Oklahoma State.
- 2:44They play really fast. They're one of the fastest teams
- 2:46in the country in terms of adjusted tempo, so they're going
- 2:49to move it incredibly, really fast.
- 2:51They're going to make you play fast too.
- 2:53On the other end of the floor. They are allowing shots the
- 2:56third fastest in the country. Wow.
- 2:57So it's going to be a lot of transition opportunities, and
- 3:00this might be one. You're talking about triple
- 3:02digits. You're talking about putting 100
- 3:04on the board for the cycle. I think it's going to be an
- 3:06entertaining game. I do think they went
- 3:07comfortably, but like one O 388, you know, something like that.
- 3:10Mistake gives up 80. Eight well, it's I think it's
- 3:12going to because of the tempo. It's not going to be because the
- 3:14defense is awful or anything like that.
- 3:16Just that's the way that Oklahoma State well.
- 3:18Don't ask me about numbers because I thought this this
- 3:20football game last night was going to fly under the under
- 3:22end. Well, until the final play,
- 3:24you're good. Yeah, but it went over.
- 3:26It went over in the end. So we'll get to that in just a
- 3:27second. Let me finish the guest list,
- 3:28Eugene Repay. And then off to Vegas we will
- 3:31go. Mike Bom, VP of operations at
- 3:33Circus Sports and Circus Breathe.
- 3:34Look, it was they were going to turn lights on whenever it had
- 3:39Ole Miss won the championship, but they were really upside down
- 3:42on Ole Miss. They had some massive tickets,
- 3:44massive futures on Ole Miss to win it all, but that will not
- 3:48happen. So that's it's coming up on our
- 3:51program here today. So let's briefly talk about that
- 3:54game last night. What a football game.
- 3:56First of all, it really was a fun game to watch.
- 4:00A little back and forth. Carson Beck making plays, making
- 4:03enough plays in the football game to to get the job done as
- 4:07they did. Obviously Lacey going crazy and
- 4:09pulled his hamstring on that play.
- 4:11And you just wonder if he'd been able to, you know, go to that
- 4:16100%. He clearly wasn't coming into
- 4:19it, but it looked like it on that play.
- 4:21Beck making plays, Chambliss making plays, you know, 1
- 4:23aspect. And I think Bama might have
- 4:25brought him up. Either Bama or you because I
- 4:28know I didn't. This is Kickers Elite.
- 4:30Yes, he Canaro. Is that his name?
- 4:33Yeah. Boy, he's elite now.
- 4:34He missed one. He did hit the hit the way hit
- 4:37the the upright twice, one of them wearing through the other
- 4:41one was a doink. But this guy is unbelievable and
- 4:45as he got some strength in that leg, 58 and he had 10 yards to
- 4:48spare. And it's crazy just how kickers
- 4:51have evolved. It's amazing, isn't it?
- 4:52You know, we go from seeing a guy like that, obviously Aubrey,
- 4:55in the NFL, even a guy like Drew Stevens.
- 4:58Drew Stevens not a big guy. No, this is not Sebastian
- 5:01Jankowski at 255 lbs, you know, knuckling it through with the
- 5:04left foot. These are not real big guys and
- 5:08the way that they're pounding it.
- 5:09But I want to bring something up and it just put a smile on my
- 5:12face because I saw this just retweeted last night, Greg
- 5:14Sankey here about a month ago. How many teams that they should
- 5:18have in? Is that what you're talking
- 5:19about? Quality football game with two
- 5:21teams that have high, high quality wins.
- 5:23One of them actually won a game. The best win on the record this
- 5:27year is Alabama's win over Georgia at Georgia, the third
- 5:30ranked team in the nation because one and two have no
- 5:32losses. So I focus on the opportunity
- 5:35and I think their participation in the College Football Playoff,
- 5:39it's clear, but we're going to have to see what what happens
- 5:41today. I I actually think we deserve 7.
- 5:43I think the. Seven teams that are in the Top
- 5:4514. Half of the top Top 14 teams are
- 5:49from the SEC. That's an indication that this
- 5:51league is different. The expectations are different,
- 5:53the competition is different, and the rewards should respect
- 5:57each of those elements. All right, Greg Sankey, enough
- 5:59of the propaganda. It's over.
- 6:00Turn the clock back. It's it's no longer the case it.
- 6:03Is not the. Case they did dominate for a
- 6:05while you there's that's indisputable but now that
- 6:07everybody can get paid Yep playing field's level yes right
- 6:10and he was seeing the result and if anybody that's going to
- 6:13represent the the SEC not Georgia it's not Alabama it's
- 6:17Ole Miss and good for them good for them that's a that's a fun
- 6:21football team. I love the stories Chambliss I
- 6:23hope he wins his court case. I hope he gets an extra year.
- 6:26Why? Because I like watching him
- 6:28play. Okay.
- 6:29I've had and I like his story. I can't be.
- 6:32I do too. I like the guy, I like Diego
- 6:34Pavia story, I like watching them play.
- 6:37But enough's enough. How many years for chap will
- 6:39this be? 6 if he wins.
- 6:41Let's knock it. Off Well, Beck, Carson, Beckson,
- 6:43you're 7. Yeah, again, let's knock it off.
- 6:45It's too much. You know, if if if I could wave
- 6:47my magic wand, if I was in charge of the NC double AI could
- 6:50do one thing. I wouldn't do anything to
- 6:52football. Well, I would, but I only get
- 6:54one thing. But I only get one thing.
- 6:56I think I would prevent the pros from coming back to college
- 6:58football. That's where I would start.
- 7:00I mean that that's got to be that would be item number one
- 7:04because there is no item number 2 if you only get 1.
- 7:06So that's. Let's see how how many, how long
- 7:08do we have here? Well, we had a 2 hour show.
- 7:10We got a few guests coming up, but I have a long list.
- 7:13How about this? Let's start here.
- 7:14You have five years period and a story 5 years deal.
- 7:17Red shirt or not, you have five years boom injuries.
- 7:20Sorry you're done. Five years.
- 7:22That's it, start right there. That's the start. 16 team
- 7:25playoff. Every game until the
- 7:27championship is played in the home team.
- 7:28So. No, no semi final screw, OK.
- 7:31Who cares what these administrators that for years
- 7:34and years were wind and dying by the bowl committees and sewing
- 7:36out there and going to play golf and going on these great
- 7:39cruises. They don't need it anymore.
- 7:40You know what an athletic director makes these days?
- 7:42They don't need that crap enough.
- 7:43Kick them out. We don't need the bowl games
- 7:45part of the playoff system. Bowl games can still put on bowl
- 7:47games. They can still do that.
- 7:49They're not doing it with the playoffs.
- 7:50And they should be. And we should do that because we
- 7:53tuned in and watched this year. The numbers back that up.
- 7:55Old Yes. Miami should not have been
- 7:58played in Phoenix. We should not have Indiana,
- 8:01Oregon tonight. Doesn't Indiana deserve a home
- 8:04game out of that? Sure.
- 8:05Shouldn't this one? They've already proved it on the
- 8:07road against Eugene. Shouldn't the regular season?
- 8:09We we talk about the sanctity of the regular season Enough.
- 8:12Move on. There's another one.
- 8:13So we got 16. We got that.
- 8:15The last night was the Fiesta Bull.
- 8:17Apparently it. Was and tonight is the Peach.
- 8:19Bowl Yeah, I saw those ugly whatever color yellow Blazers
- 8:23that the Fiesta Bowl people were wearing in that one.
- 8:25Look, for for years, I was told Bob Dyer's tell me this all the
- 8:29time. When he retires, he wants to be
- 8:31a bull official, a bowl executive.
- 8:33Because you go around every weekend, you're in a different
- 8:35stadium, wined and dine. You get your ass kissed and and
- 8:40it's a hell of a racket. You play golf, you invite people
- 8:42to play golf. You go on cruises.
- 8:44As you mentioned, it is a great gimmick.
- 8:46It's a great gig if you can get it.
- 8:48But we'll see anyway. So we're going to get a game
- 8:51tonight, but I want to go to the NFL tomorrow because I have a
- 8:54scenario. We both pick Green Bay, so I'm
- 8:56not picking on your Bears. Is there a chance that the Rams
- 9:00host a game next week? The Rams host a game.
- 9:03Here's my So the Packers would beat the Packers would beat your
- 9:07Bears. There go the two seed, the
- 9:09Niners who you picked beat the Eagles.
- 9:12There goes the three seed. Carolina has a prayer.
- 9:16The five seed would be an ultimately the second best seed
- 9:20standing. So they would host the Niners.
- 9:23Yeah, it's not a not. Crazy, right?
- 9:25Absolutely not. And obviously the Packers would
- 9:28go out to the West Coast and take on Seattle.
- 9:30It's not without the realm of possibility that that could
- 9:33happen. A real shot, yeah.
- 9:35There is a real shot, I think. I mean, you like the Niners.
- 9:37I'm on the other side, but I see where you're coming from.
- 9:40It's the Eagles offense and the lack of offense.
- 9:42It's been putrid all year long. Love the defense.
- 9:44Obviously Purdy and company have a phenomenal offense, but it's
- 9:48the defense and it's the injuries that have held them
- 9:50back. I'm going to take the Packers,
- 9:52as we did yesterday, to win the football game and I don't think
- 9:55Carolina has prayer. They may cover, but that doesn't
- 9:58count. I go through and as I was
- 10:01putting together notes for today, I think you've heard me
- 10:05throughout the course of the season.
- 10:06There's just so many things to dislike with all these teams.
- 10:09So many. Every teams has a wart.
- 10:10Yep. Let's start with the one seats.
- 10:12Denver. You've said it yourself, right?
- 10:14There's a long list there. You go to the other side.
- 10:17Sam Darnold for the Seahawks. Bears, you can't have turnover
- 10:21luck. That defense is atrocious.
- 10:23The Packers are incredibly banged up.
- 10:25Rams, well, they're going down the road and likely might have
- 10:28to go on the road three straight times.
- 10:31Stafford cold weather on the road, not exactly been a calling
- 10:34card for him throughout the course of his career.
- 10:36Maybe the most complete team. Still, there's warts there.
- 10:38Carolina's Carolina girls Bills outside of Josh Allen and run
- 10:42the ball with Cook. Team's not good.
- 10:43It's not a good football team. Here's the team, though, that I
- 10:46kind of struggled with their opponent.
- 10:48It was Jacksonville and as I was going through and looking at it,
- 10:52I couldn't come up with anything that I said no Trevor Lawrence
- 10:57won a playoff game. He's already done it.
- 10:59It was a comeback against the Chargers, He did it and he had
- 11:02the Chiefs in Arrowhead on the ropes.
- 11:05His team did that. They've got a head coach.
- 11:08They got a head coach, they got a head coach, they got an elite
- 11:10kicker. As we go back to where we
- 11:11started the conversation with tickers tonight, how about this?
- 11:15Speaking of that, I found this one at DraftKings.
- 11:18Longest field goal in that game. In the game coming up this
- 11:21weekend. Jacksonville, Buffalo It's not
- 11:24an over under, it's just what team has the longest field goal.
- 11:27Oh, I think that's a cinch. Praters hurt right on top of
- 11:32obviously little is better. Cam Little's got a what, a 67
- 11:36and a 68 or 68 and 69. It's.
- 11:38Right around what? What are the pre seasons?
- 11:39Yeah. Yeah, 6768, I think.
- 11:42So advantage there coupled with I don't know if Prater is going
- 11:46to be able to go. I don't think he is there.
- 11:47There was talk, I saw an article in a Buffalo outlet that was
- 11:50talking about the practicing more 2 point plays this week
- 11:53because of that possibility. So they're going through with
- 11:56that minus one O 5. Wow. -1 O 5.
- 11:59Seems like easy money, Trent. Too good to be true.
- 12:02Well, and we don't do a whole lot of props, but that one was
- 12:04no. I'm with you.
- 12:05But Jacksonville was the one team I mean, and we've talked
- 12:07about the rest of the teams. 49ers injuries again for them.
- 12:10Eagles lack of offense, Chargers terrible offensive line,
- 12:13Patriots easiest schedule. Texans what?
- 12:17Well, defense is taking a step back.
- 12:18Offensive line is not very good. Steelers are the Steelers.
- 12:21You know what Dan Jacksonville is doing this without, and I'm
- 12:24not sure what kind of player Travis Hunter is going to be,
- 12:26but he was the second overall pick in the draft, right?
- 12:29I love the way they run the ball.
- 12:31Getting Myers from the Raiders was a huge boot.
- 12:33Parker Washington killed Denver, Denver lost one game at home.
- 12:37It was Jacksonville, it was Jacksonville.
- 12:39They can run the football. They've got an underrated
- 12:41defence. You mentioned Cam Little, the
- 12:43kicker. I don't know what their wart is.
- 12:45I really don't. I think Jacksonville, as we've
- 12:47said, can represent the AFC. So does that mean I need to go
- 12:51open up my circus sports app? I would buy exact as I already
- 12:54have. Rams, Jaguars Jaguars Rams.
- 12:56Yeah, well, yes. Those are the two teams I, I
- 12:59think are the most complete teams.
- 13:01I agree. I also threw Seattle in with
- 13:03Jacksonville as well. You know I would.
- 13:05Yes, I do. They can get.
- 13:07There, but I keep the Jags. I keep the Jags in the Super
- 13:10Bowl exact and they're big prices.
- 13:12This is why, yes, I'm, I know when I bet like this, if I win,
- 13:15I'm going to three of my tickets are going to go in the trash
- 13:18bin. But that's OK.
- 13:20When you're getting 30 or 60 to one in some cases, you know,
- 13:24it's all. You just need one of those.
- 13:25I think Jacksonville can represent the AFC.
- 13:28I don't think it's crazy. Jaguars to beat the Rams 56 to
- 13:311. How about that?
- 13:32Rams to beat the Jaguars 3535? Yeah.
- 13:36That's good. Couple of half of you to place.
- 13:38And if you love the Rams, you can get them at what is it, 4?
- 13:41Are they 5 to 1 to win the Super Bowl?
- 13:43But if you find the team they're going to beat, look what that
- 13:46does to your ticket. All of a sudden, from 5:00 to
- 13:481:00, now you're up into 35 to 1.
- 13:50Now you got to find the right team.
- 13:52But you don't have to just use one team.
- 13:54You can pit the Rams over the if you love the Broncos, them, if
- 13:58you love the Patriots, whoever you like in the AFC.
- 14:00And obviously, as the seed gets higher, the prices get bigger as
- 14:04well. That's it, circa, circa.
- 14:07So biggest upset, biggest pressure is there.
- 14:12I mean, the answer's Josh Allen, right?
- 14:15Is, is, is the pressure? Is there anyone that comes
- 14:17close? I think in a certain way because
- 14:20yes, Allen's the answer, but I think Drake May and the Patriots
- 14:23also, we feel like we don't know a whole lot about them.
- 14:27Their fan base is supporting I. Know his wife likes to cook.
- 14:32This team is better than playing the easiest schedule in the NFL
- 14:35since 1976 or whatever the metric is.
- 14:38You have that component to it. And we know first time
- 14:41quarterbacks in the playoffs, the history is not very good on
- 14:44this front. Herbert's been there.
- 14:47Herbert has also blown leads in the playoffs.
- 14:49But I think that the pressure, if you had to say somebody other
- 14:53than Allen, that would probably be the one I'd point to.
- 14:55Yeah, I agree with you. I don't know.
- 14:59I don't think there's pressure, no, the Eagles to repeat, no, I
- 15:03don't. I don't see that it's it's Josh
- 15:04Allen, boy, there's a lot of love for the Steelers on Monday
- 15:08night already. A lot of love.
- 15:10A lot of people think that the Steelers team is going to wipe
- 15:12the floor with them. I'm not one of them but they do
- 15:16get the biggest weapon back in DK Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers.
- 15:20With DK Metcalf, Aaron Rodgers gets rid of the ball so damn
- 15:23quick and he didn't have Metcalf for the last two games.
- 15:27But here's the thing, Texans defence with Stingley and
- 15:29company. I mean this is an elite group
- 15:31back. There they are.
- 15:33They're the best defence in the. NFL I think they are, Trent, I
- 15:36think yes, I think they are. I think the best defence is
- 15:40still standing. Eagles, obviously in the NFC,
- 15:44Texans in the AFC. Denver's got a good defense.
- 15:51Rams have I got some problems? I think the three best defenses
- 15:56and maybe I'm maybe we're selling the Jags.
- 15:57Short, maybe. They're not bad.
- 16:00They're not bad. They don't.
- 16:01I mean, I don't know, A couple of the weakness would be a
- 16:05couple of the Seattle defense, a couple of the.
- 16:08Seattle, Seattle. Seattle.
- 16:10Denver. Houston.
- 16:11Yeah, and Eagles, Yes. Oh, absolutely.
- 16:13Eagles are good. Alright, Bama, Bob, coming up on
- 16:16the game tonight, you picked the game in our little contest.
- 16:19You took. Who did you take?
- 16:21I got Oregon in the points. Yeah, I got the 3 1/2.
- 16:23Do you remember the first game? I do very well on NBC if memory.
- 16:28Was it? Yes.
- 16:29And it was kind of a close game, right?
- 16:31I mean, it wasn't Oregon. It's not like they trailed
- 16:33throughout. No there.
- 16:34Was the fourth quarter Oregon just hit the skids.
- 16:39I mean it was a tight game and and Indiana pulled away through
- 16:42the pick 6 maybe got something. Oregon just couldn't do
- 16:44anything. I believe in that offensive
- 16:46line. I believe in Dante Boer second
- 16:49time through. I think the rematch component is
- 16:51definitely going to have help. There's 3 1/2 basically across
- 16:54the board in this one, and I think Landing is a really good
- 16:59coach. And I think with this kind of
- 17:00motivational edge second time, I think that this team's going to
- 17:03be ready. It's not going to be an
- 17:05onslaught that we've seen so often with India.
- 17:07I think it's going to look a lot like the Big 10 championship
- 17:10game. And remember that Big 10
- 17:11championship game, missed chip shots, awful inside the red
- 17:15zone. It comes down to that.
- 17:17They got to score touchdowns in the red zone.
- 17:18If they get a couple opportunities, finish those
- 17:20drives. If Oregon does, I think they can
- 17:22win this game. We can't wait to watch it.
- 17:24We'll talk about it next. Bama Bob's going to join us.
- 17:26Miller and Condon underway still to come this hour, Jeff Hughes,
- 17:30more on the Packers and the Bears.
- 17:31He owns the Bears blog.com. The Bears blog.com underway on a
- 17:37Friday. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 17:39Sports Radio Network. 1225 Millerine Condon welcome back,
- 17:49Iowa Sports Radio Network. Still to come this hour, Jeff
- 17:52Hughes from the Bear's blog. Bears, Packers 7:00 Saturday
- 17:58night, Soldier Field, cold temperatures, maybe some snow,
- 18:02maybe some winds. We'll get into that coming up
- 18:04here in about 420 minutes. But right now, let's get our
- 18:07buddy Bama Bob in here. Let's recap last night, preview
- 18:10tonight. Miami marches on.
- 18:12Bama, Bob, how are you? I'm doing great man.
- 18:15I can't wait for bears Packers. I mean that is yes.
- 18:19How fun is that? No, I'm.
- 18:20With you, no, I totally agree. That moves the needle here.
- 18:23Obviously with our regional teams in our backyard and going
- 18:27to be a fascinating football game.
- 18:29The good news for Trent and I selfishly, well for Trent,
- 18:31obviously he's a Bears fan, but we get one of our regional teams
- 18:34to advance to the divisional round of the play offs.
- 18:37So that's all I look at it. Anyways.
- 18:39Let's get into last night and what a football game it was.
- 18:43I thought for a long time that the low scoring that kind of
- 18:45thought we were going to see was going to hold, but that wasn't
- 18:48the case. So let's start with the very
- 18:50last play in the football game. I know it's never called.
- 18:52I know it's never called, but it was there was clearly seemingly
- 18:56at least I saw it pass interference, not going to get
- 18:59that call. Do you understand why Ole Miss
- 19:01fans are perturbed this morning that that they think that the
- 19:05officials missed one? But again, you never see it
- 19:07called at that point. Yeah, I'm not terribly and
- 19:11obviously I'm not terribly perturbed about it and I don't,
- 19:14I want to think that I wouldn't be if the call some more call
- 19:18had gone against Alabama and it's for several reasons.
- 19:21I understand if it's Pi you call it no matter when it is in the
- 19:24game, right. I think it was kind of clear.
- 19:27But even if it's called that, was it a 15 yard penalty?
- 19:30No, they set up at the two in the end zone.
- 19:32The two in the end zone I'm pretty.
- 19:33Sure. Are you sure?
- 19:34I think it's 15 and. No 15, except if it's in the end
- 19:37zone. OK.
- 19:40I. I thought it was just 15 period.
- 19:44It's normally 15 but I think if the foul curls occurs in the end
- 19:48zone they set up shop at the 2. OK.
- 19:51I wasn't aware of that rule. I'm 15 yards because I don't
- 19:54know. 15 yard penalty even if it's in the end zone?
- 19:56Yep. So it would have split the
- 19:58difference. Basically that was wrong.
- 20:01Yeah, but so again, not going to no guarantee that, you know,
- 20:04that, yes, they get another chance to get another play.
- 20:06I understand all that. The other thing is they had and
- 20:10I don't really like this explanation.
- 20:13And even though I'm about to give it myself, as you know,
- 20:16well, you know, look at how many chances I squandered during the
- 20:18game. You know, they could have gotten
- 20:19in the end zone. They kicked field goals instead.
- 20:21And I understand that And and that is a reasonable argument.
- 20:26I think however you got, you know, whatever play is in front
- 20:30of you is that that's kind of how you have to rule it at the
- 20:32time. But I don't I didn't have a big
- 20:35problem with the non call. I don't know that anybody really
- 20:38would. I think there's a lot of
- 20:39obviously a lot of emotion on Ole Missus side, not only for
- 20:42the game, but everything else is going on that we've talked about
- 20:45around Lane Kiffin and how bad these players, how hard they
- 20:49played, how much they wanted it. And so I think a lot of that was
- 20:54just kind of boiling over because they know this is it.
- 20:56I mean they got they do. I hope shameless gets a six
- 20:59year. I'm not really big on a lot of
- 21:01this stuff, but Ole Miss is going to really have a lot to
- 21:03run back. If these guys get these six year
- 21:05waivers from the NCAA, they're going to be and good for them.
- 21:09You know, they're not shopping themselves around or whatever
- 21:12like the. Kicker's coming back.
- 21:14Kicker, Oh man, is he a weapon. That is a that is a draftable
- 21:18kicker right there. Generally, you know, you kind of
- 21:20stay away from those. That's that's maybe a he might
- 21:23be worth a fourth round pick depending on, you know, who
- 21:26needs what when when this time comes around.
- 21:28But I just thought I don't have a problem with the non call.
- 21:32I wouldn't had a problem with the π if you wanted to call it
- 21:34either. I think it was.
- 21:35But I know why it's not called. But man, they they did try to.
- 21:39I thought the one I was about to lose it, the face mask on the
- 21:43sideline. I thought that was initially
- 21:45ruled π I didn't see the face mask because I was now I'm
- 21:49saying, OK, they're trying to make themselves a story here.
- 21:52But but that was a face mask and that was the right call.
- 21:57But yeah, I, I didn't. I hope I don't.
- 22:00To me, it doesn't take away what was just a great game.
- 22:04I think both teams, it was physical.
- 22:07Miami was the more physical team at the end.
- 22:10And I think that was that was starting to show, you know, the
- 22:15play that Beck scored on. I mean, those guys, those D Lima
- 22:18were just exhausted. They didn't have anything left.
- 22:21Where did they run? Like almost was it 85 plays, 88
- 22:25plays, whatever. It was crazy the amount of plays
- 22:28they were out there to have to defend.
- 22:29So but listen, old miss, you give them all the credit.
- 22:33You know, they couldn't carry the SEC flag any further, but
- 22:36they did a they did a remarkable job while they were at it.
- 22:38And I think you got to Carson Beck some credit too, because
- 22:40I've not been a fan of his and that last drive and they had
- 22:44three consecutive drives that were 13 plus plays.
- 22:47And that's how you That's Mario. Chris, that's Miami football.
- 22:51It is. It is now, right?
- 22:52It's not the old days of of, you know, the insufferable Michael
- 22:56Irvin. And by the way, they didn't show
- 22:58him last night, did they? No thank.
- 23:00Goodness, they did right, you know, and and I'll tell you, I
- 23:03was I, I almost, I, I didn't know exactly how to, to
- 23:07articulate it, but they showed a shot of Eli Manning in the
- 23:11booth, right? Where is Ole Miss?
- 23:12Are are in, I guess in a box, not the booth box, right.
- 23:15And you know, he had his Ole Miss thing.
- 23:17And I was just thinking, I'm like, could, could 2 superstar
- 23:22Hall of Fame players represent their album orders in different
- 23:27ways. I mean in more different ways,
- 23:30Marvin. I mean, you know, urban down on
- 23:32the sideline gesticulating every, you know, all the stuff.
- 23:36I swear I saw one picture of him where he had a headset on behind
- 23:40Cristobal one time. And I'm like, really?
- 23:43And then here's Eli. He's just up there.
- 23:45Yeah, he's he's as invested. It's just not as demonstrative
- 23:48and everything else. But I just, the contrast between
- 23:51those two at one point just kind of struck me.
- 23:53I'm like, wow, I don't, I know which one I'd rather have.
- 23:56But you know, Urban's passionate.
- 23:58You give him that. Yeah, no doubt.
- 24:00All right, let's move on to tonight and what we expect we're
- 24:02going to see is this a high scoring game trend?
- 24:06What did they put up in there? The first time that they played
- 24:08in the in the mid 50s someone was at 30213024.
- 24:13Right in that range. Let me pull up the schedule here
- 24:15quick. It was 30 to 20/30/20 was the
- 24:18final in that football game. Mentioned the pick 6, can't
- 24:22obviously afford that. That was at the beginning of the
- 24:24fourth quarter 35 yarder. But then from there it was
- 24:27back-to-back scoring drives as it was 2020 at the time after
- 24:30the pick 6. But we're just couldn't do
- 24:32anything in the second-half. I think this is going to be
- 24:36certainly early on, maybe lean to a first half under maybe a
- 24:39little bit more feeling out process for both of them.
- 24:41Not sure about full game but maybe would lean that direction.
- 24:44Almost 48 and a. Half Pam, I said earlier I like
- 24:47Oregon and the points here. Getting the 3 1/2.
- 24:49I think this is going to be another really good game that
- 24:51comes down to the final whistle. I agree.
- 24:56I think a couple factors here. I think Indiana is going to have
- 24:59a majority of the crowd. We talked about Oregon last
- 25:04week. I mean, it is, I don't know how
- 25:05many fans there were really in the stadium down in Miami for
- 25:09the game against Texas Tech, but you may get a few more now that
- 25:13this, you know, it's in Atlanta. But again, you know, Indiana
- 25:16fans, they're going to go wherever, wherever they need to
- 25:19because I mean, they've never been here before.
- 25:20And saving up money for like 60 years.
- 25:22They have for 50 years. Yes, it's been inherited down
- 25:25multiple generations. I think.
- 25:27I think it's going to be 7525, at least for Indiana.
- 25:31I think they're going to be loud.
- 25:32So I think that is going to be a factor.
- 25:34I think Oregon kind of has to hang in early, if you will,
- 25:39because if we saw it against Alabama and listen, let's not
- 25:42get ourselves right. Oregon is a much better team
- 25:44than Alabama was this year. But you see how they can get
- 25:49away, how games can get away against against Indiana
- 25:52defensively, offensively, everything.
- 25:54They've just got it all. I think I think Indiana is is
- 25:59the obviously they're the favorite and they should be the
- 26:01favorite million of the total. It's 48 1/2 Man, that's a good
- 26:06another good line. I think I'm with you, Ken.
- 26:08I thought I thought the under or whatever it was last night, it
- 26:10looked it looked good for about 3 1/2 quarters.
- 26:13And then I think both teams just kind of ran out of steam and
- 26:16that's another thing I can get to in a minute.
- 26:17But in this game, I mean 2 great quarterbacks, right?
- 26:21Everything I've seen, these are like what?
- 26:23The first two players off the board they are in the draft and
- 26:26most mock drafts, certainly the first two quarterbacks.
- 26:30What somehow Ty Simpson being third on that list.
- 26:33Not quite sure how that works out, but I'll get to that.
- 26:37Another. I'm not sure the one and the two
- 26:39are going to work out, but we'll see.
- 26:41Yeah, it's going to be interesting.
- 26:42I think there's going to be teams, obviously, you know,
- 26:44teams trade up or down or whatever to get one of these
- 26:46guys. But the game itself, I mean, I
- 26:48expect another physical. This is another one of those.
- 26:52It's similar to Georgia, Ole Miss, right?
- 26:54The the familiarity. They know each other.
- 26:56They played each other. They played earlier the season
- 26:59out in Eugene. I don't know if that helps one
- 27:03team or the other. I just think that there
- 27:05shouldn't be any surprises. I mean, both teams know what
- 27:08they're going to get. I just like I have not seen
- 27:10anything all year. Indiana can win however you
- 27:13want. They can score, they can they
- 27:14can slug it out, they can play defense.
- 27:18However you want to play, they can play and they've got an
- 27:20answer for just about everything.
- 27:21But I think this is I think this is another slugfest.
- 27:24I think Indiana wins. It wouldn't be surprised if it's
- 27:27a little outside that margin, you know, 30 or 90, thirty,
- 27:312721, something like that. I could see maybe a late field
- 27:35goal or whatnot, but I think this is another slugfest and
- 27:38it's just going to be again, new blood, right?
- 27:40You talked about it yesterday. These four teams, I know
- 27:43Indiana's number one, but they made the playoffs last year and
- 27:46kind of went out with a whimper. Both these teams, and as did
- 27:49Oregon, they was in one seed, right, last year and went out
- 27:52with a whimper in the round of 8.
- 27:54So I love the new blood. We're going to get a hell of a
- 27:56championship game in Indiana, Miami championship game, guys.
- 28:00The physicality in that game is going to be old school.
- 28:03That happens. And in Oregon's, Oregon's not a
- 28:06finesse team by any means. I just, I have not seen anything
- 28:08that tells me that they can just line it up and slug it out with
- 28:11Indiana. I haven't seen any team that
- 28:13really can do that this year. And this is where you get in the
- 28:17playoffs. So I was talking about earlier I
- 28:19the fourth quarter last night, right, you saw some guys getting
- 28:22tired, you saw some guys going out with injuries.
- 28:25This is where the schedule when you're playing an NFL schedule
- 28:28in the college, this is where it kind of catches up to you in my
- 28:31opinion, because you've got three or four playoff games
- 28:33after maybe a championship game and then after a regular season.
- 28:37It's starting to ask a lot of these guys and I know they've
- 28:39got great, you know, sports science departments and
- 28:43everything else. But this is where, in my
- 28:46opinion, you're going to start seeing some injuries because of
- 28:49fatigue, because of the quality opponents you're playing
- 28:51constantly, the travel, whatever you want to say.
- 28:55I hope we don't see it tonight because both, I mean this, this
- 28:58has got a chance to be a classic.
- 28:59I think it will. I don't see any reason why it
- 29:00won't. But I think Indiana wins is
- 29:02going to set up a hell of a championship game.
- 29:04Final thing for me, Bama, and down there in SEC territory as
- 29:07you are, this will be the third consecutive year that we will
- 29:10not even have a participant from the SEC and potentially
- 29:14back-to-back to back Big 10 champion winners.
- 29:17Is there a reality setting in? Is there a frustration?
- 29:20What's happening down there in SEC territory?
- 29:22How are they explaining this one away?
- 29:25Well, clearly Georgia can't carry the candle anymore.
- 29:27I mean, that's the problem. I mean, it is a bit of a
- 29:31concern. I say a concern.
- 29:32I mean, listen, while the SEC was dominating and I understand
- 29:37the narrative, right? Well, now that everybody can pay
- 29:39their players, you know, I don't, I mean, there may be a
- 29:42little bit of truth to that, but I think if you think there are
- 29:45other teams that weren't paying players along with the SEC, then
- 29:48then you're naive. However, I think it has leveled
- 29:52the playing field. I think as much as anything,
- 29:54it's the coaches, right? I mean, look at landing, look at
- 29:56the guys we got tonight and the guys we had last night, right?
- 29:59Cristobal, I mean, he's he was given time at Miami and he's
- 30:04given patience. The one thing the SEC does not
- 30:07have is patience for coaches. If you don't win in three years,
- 30:11you're gone. I mean, and they don't build.
- 30:13You know, I can't, I can't tell you how many coaches LSU is
- 30:17paying or Auburn has paid in the last, you know, 5-6 years.
- 30:21And at one time Auburn had 4 football coaches on their
- 30:24payroll. They're still playing buyouts
- 30:26too, earlier this I believe last year.
- 30:29So is it a concern? Maybe a little bit, but it's
- 30:35clearly changed. I mean, you can call it whatever
- 30:37you want for whatever reason you want, but there has been a
- 30:39little bit of a paradigm shift. And I think NIL has contributed
- 30:42to that because it used to just be when Nick Saban was running
- 30:45roughshod down here, it was what it was about going to the NFL
- 30:48and that was it. And if you wanted to go to the
- 30:49NFL, that was your best shot to go.
- 30:52Well, now it's it's yeah, it's about that.
- 30:54But it's also about getting paid for right now.
- 30:57And teams like Oregon and Indiana have deep pockets.
- 31:01Maybe it's just one booster, right?
- 31:02But it's one booster that. Mind spending 20, thirty, 40
- 31:05million bucks a year to try to win and that's all it takes is
- 31:09one guy Texas Tech same thing. Those are teams that really
- 31:12under the old system wouldn't have a sniff and now they're
- 31:15getting one. But it's starting to get, it's
- 31:18starting to get a little bit concerning, like you said,
- 31:20because that's going to be 3 years in a row that you don't
- 31:22even not only did they not win, they didn't make the
- 31:24championship game. So I think this is starting to
- 31:26be a little bit of a pattern. We will preview quickly at 1:30
- 31:30or so on Monday what I'll look ahead to a week from Monday in
- 31:34the National Championship and we'll talk to you on Monday.
- 31:36Enjoy the game tonight. Yep, take care guys.
- 31:38I appreciate it. Good.
- 31:39To talk to you. So I want to go back to this
- 31:41touchdown or this passer fierce in the end zone because I know
- 31:45I'd seen it before. Here's the rule.
- 31:47You ready for the rule? You're more so right, But but
- 31:51I'm going to give myself a little bit of a wiggle room here
- 31:54in college football. If defensive pass interference
- 31:58DPI in the end zone results in a ball being placed at the 2 yard
- 32:01line if the snap was between the two and the 17.
- 32:04All right, that makes sense, right?
- 32:05So if they if you snap the ball, you start half the distance, the
- 32:08goal, you place the ball at the 2.
- 32:11But it says if it's an obvious touchdown denying foul, like
- 32:15grabbing receiver in the end zone, it becomes a spot foul at
- 32:18the 1 yard line. That's not what that was,
- 32:21though. It wasn't you're right, but but
- 32:23you're right. But I knew I'd seen it before,
- 32:25but that wasn't the case last night.
- 32:27No, it would have been a 15 yard last night.
- 32:29And I'm glad they didn't call it because they never call it or
- 32:31very seldom call it. We'll take your time out.
- 32:33Come back. We will be joined by Jeff
- 32:35Hughes, the Bears blog, The Bears blog.com for Jeff.
- 32:40That's next, Miller Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:58I'm Maury Condon. Welcome back Saturday in the
- 33:02park. Saturday it sold your feet.
- 33:04I. Wonder if you were going to pull
- 33:05that? Oh.
- 33:05I love Chicago, a big fan of Chicago back in the 70s with
- 33:09what was his name, Sotera. Peter Sotera Peter Sotera.
- 33:12Let's get Jeff Hughes in here. The Bears, blog.com, Bears,
- 33:16Packers It's Saturday night and away we go into the playoffs
- 33:19with this match up. Jeff Hughes and I know I speak
- 33:22for Trent, that we both can't wait.
- 33:23Counting down the hours to 7:00 tomorrow night.
- 33:26How are you Jeff Hughes? It's good to speak with you
- 33:28again. Good to talk to you guys.
- 33:30And if you haven't seen Larry David's movie he made for HBO,
- 33:33Clear History, one of the funniest uses of the band
- 33:36Chicago you will ever see. They are a prominent plot point
- 33:41in Clear History. So your listeners check out
- 33:43Clear History on Max. You will thank me.
- 33:46I absolutely will because I love Larry David and I'm going to say
- 33:48Happy New Year to you, even though he'd get mad about it.
- 33:50But he was. Way too late for that.
- 33:52Yes, way too late for that. I'm going to put that one on the
- 33:55list. Well, before we get into this
- 33:57game of this match up, Jeff, we haven't talked to you a ton this
- 34:00season, but this has been so entertaining.
- 34:02And as you've got to know me in the last 15 years that we've
- 34:06been talking together, you know, I'm certainly not the most
- 34:09optimistic guy. A lot of negativity with this
- 34:12organization and even these last two games, you know, I've looked
- 34:15over, I got a kindergartner now I was in kindergarten the last
- 34:18time the Bears won a Super Bowl. So we've been having fun with
- 34:20that. But this is as been as an
- 34:22enjoyable of a season. Even the years where they've got
- 34:25the number one seed, they've been 15 of 1 they've they've had
- 34:28play playoff games over these last 40 years.
- 34:31This has been as enjoyable for me.
- 34:33How about for you as you watch this squad?
- 34:35The season I compare this to is 2001.
- 34:40This is a season. If people don't remember 2001,
- 34:43it wasn't just that the Bears won a bunch of games.
- 34:46They won a bunch of games. Implausibly, they won
- 34:49back-to-back games on the interceptions in overtime by the
- 34:52same guy. Like it was an absurd season.
- 34:57When you come into a season with a first year head coach, with a
- 34:59second year quarterback, you expect it to be bumpy.
- 35:02You expect them to have a learning curve, a long process.
- 35:07I did not expect them to be this much fun.
- 35:10And I've said to you guys for years, and I've been writing
- 35:12about this for years, I was tired of watching a football
- 35:16team trying to win 13/9 every week.
- 35:19I was tired of watching a football team where if the other
- 35:21team got into the 20's, the game was over.
- 35:23If the other team got up 10 points, the game was over.
- 35:26This team all season long. It didn't matter who the
- 35:29opponent was. It didn't matter where the game
- 35:31was being played. The ball was going to be in the
- 35:34hands of one of the quarterbacks with a chance to win in the last
- 35:37two minutes. And when the Bears had that
- 35:39opportunity, more times than not, they won the game.
- 35:42And trying to. I'll second this.
- 35:43Was there a more entertaining football game this season than
- 35:47Bears, Niners? And I didn't even care that they
- 35:49lost. I mean, it was just the kind of
- 35:51entertainment product I've been begging for for years.
- 35:55And Ben and Caleb have produced it in one season 1 season.
- 35:59Are they ahead of schedule, would you say?
- 36:02I think they're ahead of schedule, certainly as an
- 36:04offense, but that is a product of 1 of the great draft classes
- 36:07in the history of the organization.
- 36:09They're ahead of schedule because of Kyle Manungai and
- 36:11Luther Burden and Colston Loveland and Ozzy Tribbio.
- 36:14They're ahead of schedule because those guys aren't just
- 36:16good rookies. They're already good players at
- 36:19their positions and are only going to get better.
- 36:22They've moved sort of the veteran presence on the offense
- 36:25out the door. The Duke kids are coming in.
- 36:27They've got to do the same thing on the other side of the ball
- 36:30come this offseason. But they're I had a schedule
- 36:33also because I don't know what happened on the bye week.
- 36:37I think there should be a 30 for 30 made about what happened on
- 36:40the bye week. Whatever been changed early in
- 36:43this season, the quarterback, the offensive line, the run
- 36:46game, everything improved and we have seen this quarterback
- 36:50improve week after week after week.
- 36:53Is he a full picture? No, and nor should he be
- 36:57expected to be. But you know who he reminds me
- 36:59of? Guys, I haven't heard this
- 37:00comparison much. Reminds me of John Elway.
- 37:03Sometimes he'll be just scratching your head, but the
- 37:06end of these games, he's lethal. He and he's going to go for
- 37:09everything and he's not going to, he's not going to take the
- 37:12dink and dunk. He's going to take the 40 yard
- 37:14bomb because he thinks he can make every throw.
- 37:16And this season, he's kind of proving that he can.
- 37:19That was always calling card winning, winning in the fourth
- 37:21quarter, comeback wins. That clearly was it.
- 37:24Did you? When you go back to the draft
- 37:26and it was kind of Warren still on the board and Loveland's on
- 37:29the board, I am Mia culpa. I thought they made an egregious
- 37:32mistake. I would have taken Warren every
- 37:34single time. Not that he's not a good player,
- 37:37but I just wasn't. I wasn't on board with Loveland
- 37:40taking the steps that he has. They've got.
- 37:42Not that the Colts don't have something, but the Bears have
- 37:45certainly found their tight end. I mean, one thing they
- 37:49prioritized in this draft was seemingly speed, and that's
- 37:53something that Ben sort of made the hallmark of his offense in
- 37:56Detroit. Listen, I didn't know much about
- 37:59Colston Loveland, right? I watched a little bit of
- 38:01Michigan last year, but I didn't know much about him.
- 38:04Ty Warren, for folks like us on old fuddy duddies, reminds us of
- 38:08like Mark Bavaro. So we look at him and we say
- 38:11that's the prototypical tight end, big body guy stands on the
- 38:14end of the line matchup nightmare over the middle.
- 38:17And Daniel Jones clearly recognized that because they
- 38:19used them brilliantly the first half of the season.
- 38:22Colston Loveland is this new modern tight end.
- 38:25He can block, he can do the job that the old school tight ends
- 38:29can do. But let's be honest, he's a wide
- 38:31receiver and that's how they're going to use them.
- 38:34And I'm not a fantasy player and I know, but I know a lot of your
- 38:37listeners probably are. I'd be very surprised if we get
- 38:40to August next year and folks aren't strongly considering
- 38:45Colston. Loveland is the most valuable
- 38:46tight end in fantasy football drafts.
- 38:47Because if this is year one, I can only imagine what year 2
- 38:52will look like. Especially considering this is
- 38:54the point I want to make about Colston.
- 38:56Lovely. When I see a quarterback leaning
- 38:59on a player 4th down after 4th down after 4th down, that tells
- 39:04me there's trust there. And if he's got to trust in him
- 39:07now as a rookie, I just think this gets bigger and bigger as
- 39:10the years go on. In our final couple minutes
- 39:12here, Jeff at the game, give us a breakdown what it's going to
- 39:15take for the Bears to get this one.
- 39:16They were long stretches where Green Blade certainly outplayed
- 39:19them in the split of the season series.
- 39:21What are a couple of the keys to the game for the Bears to get
- 39:23the win Saturday night? The key for me is how does
- 39:26Dennis Allen approach this offense if if he sits back in
- 39:29coverages and allows the Packers to have easy runs on first down
- 39:34and that mid range throw, which Jordan loves very good at, if he
- 39:37allows those kinds of plays, the Packers are going to keep the
- 39:40ball all night. And this game is all about Bears
- 39:44possessions. We have seen it when they get
- 39:46the ball, they do special things with it, especially late in the
- 39:49games. But late in these games they've
- 39:51had the ball more. Cannot let this team dominate
- 39:55time of possession throughout the first half and have another
- 39:58one of these games where it's 13 three at half time and the Bears
- 40:02have to come back eventually that magic wears off.
- 40:05The Bears have to get the ball, keep the ball, but they've got
- 40:09to at least take some shots on defense to force Love over the
- 40:12top. Because if they if the if the
- 40:14Packers, this is a number to watch.
- 40:16If the Packers were in second and four all night, the Bears
- 40:19were in trouble. If the Packers are in second and
- 40:21four, those are going to be first downs, 2-3 minutes off the
- 40:24clock, and they'll be able to wind this game down.
- 40:27Can the Bears then get the big turnover, the big penalty,
- 40:30something like that? Yeah, they've been doing it all
- 40:31year, so why can't they do it on Saturday nights?
- 40:34But that luck will run out at some point.
- 40:37So I think they've got to somehow stop that Packer run
- 40:40game on early downs, force Love to convert third and eight,
- 40:44third and 9. You'll have better chances
- 40:47there. And then when they get the ball,
- 40:49they got to score. I think this game is going to be
- 40:50one in the high 20s, barring weather.
- 40:53So I think that's got to be the objective for the Bears.
- 40:55You've got to get to that 28 number, and if your defense
- 40:58can't hold that, so be it. Well, let's make a plan of doing
- 41:01this going forward here if they get by, if they get by the
- 41:03Packers this week, Jeff used the Bears blog, the Bears blog.com.
- 41:06Jeff, thanks for jumping on. Enjoy the game.
- 41:08I know you will appreciate it. Jeff, good to talk to you.
- 41:11The Coors are in the fridge. I'm ready to go.
- 41:13Boy, well done. Jeff used a bear's blog.
