- 1:40got a bit of an odd ball show here. We have one episode left
- 1:44of Manhunt and we're throwing in one episode of police Headquarters. So we fill
- 1:49about half an hour of time today's episode of Manhunt. We don't know when
- 1:53it originally aired. The only god we have is the digitally FTP's log.
- 1:59Unfortunate, isn't that just no information on this particular time period? So here
- 2:02is Manhunt and the clue of the widowed bride man Hunt, the clue of
- 2:12the widowed bride that led to man hunt. All prime has been committed yet,
- 2:27no murder has been done yet, no man hunt has begun yet.
- 2:38There she is in the doorway. Doesn't she look be All brides look beautiful?
- 2:47Don't you know that it's getting a wonderful man the way she looks?
- 2:52Now she existed and are sometimes to see in a couple of minutes, Peggy
- 3:05not mobile, missus Douglas Gordon, What a break for ceremonial friends. We
- 3:14are gathered here today. Let a switch this is we came to a wedding
- 3:25and we wind up with a funeral, man hunt and the clue of the
- 3:38widowed bride. All right, all right, get their names and addresses and
- 3:51let them all go. Then hold one hundred and fifty people all night for
- 3:54nothing. Call me back. Hi, No, I really says you so
- 4:00happy about Drew. No reason are you so glum about though I got a
- 4:03reason you want me for anything, and you're just wasting time in my office.
- 4:09I just want to know whether you had anything on a Douglas Gordon murder
- 4:11that I could check in my laboratory. When I gets something, I'll bring
- 4:14it in. Guy was shot at his own wedding. One hundred and fifty
- 4:17people in the all, but nobody saw the murderer and there isn't a gun
- 4:20on the whole place. My men searched everybody practically told the place down looking
- 4:26for it, and we looked outside too. So don't give me any of
- 4:30your smart suggestions. Okay, Bell, I won't, but I'll tell you
- 4:32one thing. Eh, there's no gun. Nobody saw the shot fired.
- 4:36Then the murderer stood weigh in the back and got out of the hall as
- 4:40soon as he killed Gordon. It could have happened that way. The place
- 4:44wasn't filled. Somebody could have been on the last drown and shot Gordon from
- 4:46there. Yeah. Well, I've solved half of your case. You take
- 4:50the other half. I told you how it was done. You find out
- 4:54who did it. Simple. I'm the one that's simple listening to you,
- 4:58and I remember, Drew. You stay in your laboratory where you belong,
- 5:00and don't make some this case. Give me trouble on this and I'll get
- 5:04your suspension. Mister. Sure as my name is Bill Morton. Okay,
- 5:06Bill, I believe it now seeing you. Okay, Okay, get going.
- 5:11I'm gonna find the murderer Douglas. All right, all right, Pete
- 5:15it Hey, what did you say? I beg your pardon? Can you
- 5:28tell me where I'll find the society editor. I'm Drew Stevens Police. Right
- 5:30in that office across the floor, mister Stephens. His name is Reginald Gordon.
- 5:34Gordon. Any relation to Douglas Gordon. Yes, yes, his brother.
- 5:40He's all broken up with Stephens. He idolizes his kid brother with Douglas.
- 5:46Thank you very much. I won't keep it too long, I mean,
- 5:55mister Gordon, I'm Drew Stevens Police. Could I talk to you a
- 5:58minute, please? Yes? I oh so, thank you and sit down.
- 6:02Stephen. Thanks. I hate to bother you at this time. First
- 6:09of all, when I came here, I wasn't aware that you were Douglas
- 6:11Gordon's brother. Oh, then what did you want? Some information? Apparently
- 6:16somebody in the social set to which your brother and his bride to be belong
- 6:19didn't want their marriage to take place. Nobody wanted it to take place except
- 6:25Doug and Peggy. Oh, mister Gordon. If your brother weren't around,
- 6:30who would Peggy Norton have married? Some other unfortunate Probably George Jeffers or Walter
- 6:35Nicholson. They were both in love with her. Were they at the wedding?
- 6:39Do you know? I don't know. Personally, I couldn't stand to
- 6:42see my brother throw himself away on that girl. And I wasn't there either.
- 6:46Snorton girl must be pretty terrible in your book, mister Gordon, I'd
- 6:50rather not talk about it. Excuse me. Oh, certainly, thank you
- 6:55for your time and for the information. I'm going to see miss Norton.
- 6:59Where does she live, mister good The ellen b Towers. Incidentally, if
- 7:01you're going up there, you'll probably find George Jeffers more than Nicholson there too.
- 7:13Yes, how do you do it? Is? Miss Peggy Norton?
- 7:15In my name is Drew Stevens Police. Well, she's busy right now mister
- 7:18Stevens, but come in. Thanks. I'm George Jeffers. Peggy's been questioned
- 7:24now by Sergeant Morton in the homicide department. Oh, Bill's here, or
- 7:27mister Jeffers, would you give Sergeant Morton a note for me? Please?
- 7:30I don't want to interrupted myself. Well, certainly, Miss Kyeah. Just
- 7:32write it out in this notebook. O Commissioner, let's see you once in
- 7:41his office. Don't telephone, but get there immediately. He knows who killed
- 7:47Gordon? Signed? Are please see that Sergeant Morton gets this? So the
- 7:55police commissioner knows who killed Gordon? Well, uh are you going to wait
- 8:00to see miss Norton and mister Stevens. No, no, I'm going now
- 8:03very well, I'll take the note right here. Thank you. I can't
- 8:07talk to that Norton goalwile don't he'd see to that readal he finds that notes
- 8:13a fake while high behind these drapes. Till nobody leave here. Remember'll I
- 8:16come back or I phone get that, we'll be here. Norton, Okay,
- 8:20goodbye, George. Do you think he suspects anything? Not a thing?
- 8:26He doesn't know a thing. Take I thought you'd left Stevens. I
- 8:33changed my mind, Miss Carton, Andrew steven he's a detective piggy, not
- 8:37exactly, Miss Thornton. Could I talk to you too for a minute please?
- 8:41I want to know several things. For instance, why are you going
- 8:45to marry Douglas Gordon, Miss Norton? Because I loved him, of course.
- 8:48And why are you here now, Jeffs, because I love Peggy George?
- 8:52Why not? There were three of us in love with Miss Norton,
- 8:56Stevens, Gordon, Walter, Nicholson myself. See she picked Gordon, but
- 9:01that doesn't mean that we stopped loving her. We didn't mind too much losing
- 9:05out to Douglas Gordon. It was as fine a man as you love a
- 9:07find. And yet he was murdered. Some one had killed me, mister
- 9:11Stephens. That would be easy to understand. I'm not very well liked except
- 9:16by the men you know about. Yes, I gathered that. Were you
- 9:20at the wedding, Jeffers, No, neither Walter nor I could take that.
- 9:24The nearest he got to the wedding was reading about it in this newspaper
- 9:28here for may I see that paper for you? Certainly he will thank you
- 9:33by Reginald Gordon. It's been pretty tough on poor Gordon write the story of
- 9:39his brother's murder. Let see says death was the best man to day what
- 9:45was to be the wedding of Peggy Norton and Douglas Gordon. Where the ceremony
- 9:48could begin, And as Pastor Robert Thackeray said, friends, we are gathered
- 9:52here to day, murderous bullets thundered through the hall. Please must have been
- 9:56reminded of those words? Must you read that now? No? But I
- 10:03just thought of something there. I use your telephone right there. Thank you.
- 10:07Please don't go either, miss Jordon. Did the murder of Douglas Gordon
- 10:16happen just as it was describing the paper? Yes, exactly that way.
- 10:20Those were the exact words the pastor used, and the shot came just at
- 10:26that time. Hello, connect me with Reginald Gordon. Hello Gordon, this
- 10:31is true, Steven, No, not yet. Hell Look Gordon, you're
- 10:35a story on page one of the paper tonight. Did you write it after
- 10:39questioning any of the wedding guests? No, I know it wasn't necessary.
- 10:43I was just asking. No, that's all, thank you very much.
- 10:50I knew it. I knew It got me out on a wild goose chase
- 10:52with that note, so you could sneak up here, you droo, how
- 10:54they'll listen? I had to. I had to talk to these people.
- 10:56You won't be talking to anybody for a long time, Drew Lucky. I
- 11:00had sense enough to telephone the commissioner find out your message was a phony.
- 11:03I'm arresting you right now, Drew, Bill Luck, not now. Don't
- 11:05arrest me now, up for an hour. If I don't have this murder
- 11:09cleaned up by then, I'll quit my job. I'll give myself up to
- 11:11you or anything you want. Please, Bill, just one hour. I'm
- 11:13not giving you a minute. You've made a dope bottom me for the last
- 11:16time. You're coming with me way, Hey, Sorry you made me do
- 11:22this, Bill, but I've got to get out of it. But on
- 11:22that gun, Drew, or on a gun on an officer with the laws
- 11:26of crime, you can't get away with that. Letters a crime Toebill.
- 11:28I can't let a murderer get away with that either. You're a good reporter,
- 11:39mister Gordon's had a lot of training. I've been on this paper for
- 11:41twenty years. But what are you driving at? Stephen just this. You
- 11:46say you weren't at the wedding of your brother and Peggy Norton. No,
- 11:48I told you I wasn't there. Anybody that says they saw me there a
- 11:52lying Nobody said they saw you there. But your story said you were there.
- 11:54Said it very plainly. It stated the exact minute the shot was fired,
- 12:00right after the preacher's first words. How did you know what they were?
- 12:03I didn't know. I imagine you know all right. You know because
- 12:07you heard them the only way in the world you could have known, and
- 12:11your reporter's instinct made you write those words just as you heard them. You're
- 12:15in the hall, Gordon fired the shot that killed your brother, and then
- 12:18escape before anyone saw you. Why'd you do it? We're going to have
- 12:22to kill you too, Stephens. Right now, don't move. This gun
- 12:24is aimed right at your heart. Doesn't matter how many people I kill now.
- 12:28I never meant to kill my brother. I meant to kill Peggy Norton.
- 12:31She would have ruined Douglas's life. She would have gone on playing around
- 12:35with Jefferson Walter Nicholson after they were married. Your aim wasn't very good at
- 12:39the wedding. I think take a chance on it. Now, you'll never
- 12:41hold me, Stephen. He would never. I'll get this gun free.
- 12:50I guess they shot the wrong man again, Stephens. Hey, Hey,
- 12:56what was going on here? He killed your brother by a mistake. But
- 12:58you killed him, didn't you? Go in? Yes, we were always
- 13:03together in life. I guess it isn't too tough to join him all.
- 13:11He's gone down. You had his confession. Oh still want me? I
- 13:16still want him? He says. Oh, I don't want you. I'm
- 13:20never gonna watch you. I guess you'll always be around. Thank goodness,
- 13:39welcome back. Well, well, let's date unknown. I tend to think
- 13:43that had to be earlier in the series run, when Bill was being a
- 13:48bit more excessive in his trying to stop Drew from participating, rather than Drew
- 13:54just pretty much going out acting like he was an the old detective and was
- 13:58a little bit melodramatic, and the clue was kind of obvious. So maybe
- 14:05not the best one to end with on Manhunt. And also I should add
- 14:09that just because someone is shot at a wedding doesn't change it to a funeral,
- 14:15not unless someone is really cheaping. Doesn't want to hire a preacher for
- 14:20a second service. Well, since we already paid you to the wedding that
- 14:24was not done, let's just go ahead and get the rights over for the
- 14:26funeral. Well it was still a wedding, all right. Well from there
- 14:31we turned to an episode of Police Headquarters, and here is episode fifteen.
- 14:37Man steals food the corner and Williams a man taking a lot. Go to
- 14:52the corner of Williams. A man taking a lot here, step on it
- 15:01right, no packtor, sirn. We've better Slipping on him does not to
- 15:07stare him away. Throwing your cutch and pat up the other side of the
- 15:13street. And that's more in life. Okay, anything of him? Yeah,
- 15:22in front of that do spip shut it. See, let's get wait
- 15:26a minute, let's get him. Do the right. Let's open that door
- 15:31in a minute and then we'll spring it on. We get him. One
- 15:35of the still outside is able to beat the reft. You have to be
- 15:37right. You got the door open here and there's no professionals. Probably some
- 15:43bunger. He got a cane in the miner of do get inside. Some
- 15:48days the jays are gonna get smart and find out they can't beat the police
- 15:52radio. Oh, some of them will never learn. Well, let's get

- 17:11name? Good? First name, pil Where you live in the natty just
- 17:17around the corner. There's no money, but the potamons are kind of my
- 17:22wife. You'll never be understand this. Why didn't you tell me? I
- 17:26understand? To you, Mike, sounds like it might be on the level.
- 17:30Jim, Well, young fella, you're telling us a good story,
- 17:33and it better be true. Of course, we can't bet you go,
- 17:37but I'm gonna. I'm gonna go around to your house to investigate. Well,
- 17:40you can't do that? Why not? Why? Why? To you?

- 18:29long. Claim. Promise the officers that I'm gonna let my wife know that
- 18:33I've been arrested, or I won't. We'll tell us that you're going away,
- 18:38that you got a job in a in a railroad game. Tell her
- 18:41that I helped you get it. How we're going in with a smile on
- 18:45our faces. See all right, smile, Oh right, officers, you're
- 18:51a regular guy. All right, good going, think it Mike, Yeah,
- 18:56it was spilt the milky little kids. There's little light in here,
- 19:04but there's a kid's living on the table. I like that. Oh that
- 19:11you Yes, yes, it's me, dear. Don't worry, honey,
- 19:14I've got some good news for you. There'll need some light. You can
- 19:18put those things down over there. And no, man, it's all right.
- 19:23Your your husband told me how he needed work, and I've arranged a

- 20:07right, man, don't you worry at all. Little chev We can't see

- 20:17It doesn't matter. Man, Oh, I'm so happy. I could cry
- 20:19when you first see me. You know what I thought that I thought the
- 20:23currents had been arrested trying to steal something for him to eat. I know
- 20:27he's got a job, but I'm so happy. Yeah, Well, don't
- 20:33you worry none, man, Oh, I won't worry now, Officer.
- 20:36I'll get well and strong and look after the children and and clarents meals when
- 20:40he comes home. But I won't be able to come home, Nancy,
- 20:42that is not parioletly. You see, man, your husband's got a job
- 20:47of a railroad gang. They're moving up state for a few weeks. But
- 20:51oh, you don't know how happy I am. I just tried so hard
- 20:56to find something to do. But it seems that there are hundreds of other
- 20:59men trying to do. Yes, there are. Well, your husband and
- 21:03I have got to run a man and time to make the work train.

- 22:21There you go. Hello, lieutenant, this is Tim McCarty. We're on
- 22:26that cowler call of Thirton Williams. Yeah, the guy's the next World War.
- 22:30Bet can't find work, wife and three kids starving. He broke into
- 22:36the place and tried to steal some meat, and he didn't touch the cash.

- 22:44Wife and babysick. Well, here's what I'm calling you about. Shows the

- 23:00for the stuff. I'm sure Mike and I saw him break in. All
- 23:06right. Listen, I thought you'd be fair about this thing, Lieutenant.
- 23:08I'll go to blazers before I testify against this guy. Tell him that goes
- 23:12for rule too. I know it's taken judgment into our hands. Yes,
- 23:15I know a phony has been committed to, but you gotta take circumstances into
- 23:19consideration. Was that all right? What did he see? Lins? You
- 23:29don't care what we do as long as we turn in an arrest on the
- 23:30case. I thought all he wants is an arrest. Yeah, give me
- 23:36that phone, mean capital six s eight one two. What are you up
- 23:41to now, you crazy irishman. I'll give him an arrest. Hello,
- 23:45those proof pilots. I want to talk to Wheezy Meadows. Yeah, they're
- 23:51getting crazier every day like a fox. Hello, Wheezy, this is Mike
- 23:56Ryan. I listen, Wheezy. I've gotta wrap up nicely for you,
- 24:00and I've been holding it up all right. I'm springing it on you unless
- 24:04you do something for me. Oh, I get it. I want you
- 24:08to circulate a story around amongst some of your friends. That is a Dutchman
- 24:12who owns a delicatessent a Ferd and Williams. He just sold his store and
- 24:17has three thousand bucks solid away his grip, thank it, four thousand Yeah,
- 24:22the guy's got five thousand ducks solid away. He's cripp It's one of
- 24:26those little sheet metal boxes that can be opened with the canos and a good
- 24:30boy. Never mind, what for now? Listen, that story hasn't made
- 24:36the rounds. In thirty minutes, I'm coming for you with an ambulance.
- 24:49God work, sure need to get through that story. You have it,
- 24:56ten thousand bucks. I'm right here on the counter. Guy, here for
- 25:00it. In ten minutes, I'm going to catch it a cold from sitting
- 25:06on the floor in the door trying to round door. Let him try,
- 25:17Yeah, and those you're shatterings and a combination, all right, you stick
- 25:26him up. Well you will try to pull a rod on me, will
- 25:30you? Nah? Just shut the rats gun out of his hand. Turn
- 25:33on the way show m n okay, one of those smart guys you didn't
- 25:41know Whoasy Meadows was just circulating that story for us? Did you it was
- 25:45just a gag, buddy, just a gag. Yeah, only smoke its
- 25:52Wheezy himself say you must be a dominate or ball rock gag like that?
- 25:57Whois? He never was? Very Well, here's a lieutenants Arrestquarters, Police
- 26:18Headquarters. Okay, Mike, Hello, Lieutenant officers Ryan and McCarthy just made
- 26:25an the rest on the delicatess job Police Headquarters. Welcome back. Well,
- 26:33this episode's interesting for a number of reasons. Other episodes of the series have
- 26:38kind of just portrayed the police as you know, unstoppable people do whatever they
- 26:45have to do to get the job done, and those episodes meant to show
- 26:48their softer, more compassionate side, and it succeeds in that. Albeit it
- 26:53basically involves them in shrapping someone else so that they can get somebody out I
- 27:00take in for a rest. We tend to not feel as bad about it,
- 27:03given that the person who did end up getting arrested but only probably had
- 27:08it coming for something else. But also it was just not very bright at
- 27:14all and really brought the whole thing on himself. But again, a somewhat
- 27:18odd effort in this one. All right, Well, we do turn to
- 27:22some listener comments and feedback, and we start with a Jim who we mentioned
- 27:26at the top of the show. He writes, I really enjoy listening to
- 27:30the different shows in your commentary. Keep up the great work. I remember
- 27:34listening to some of these programs when I visited my grandparents. They talked about
- 27:40a number of the characters like they were family, the good guys. Of
- 27:44course, Well, that's definitely true, and I think particularly on the on
- 27:49some of the comedy programs, just because there were some people who would continue
- 27:57character for a day, eight or more and it really was you know,
- 28:03you created just a very and I'm an atmosphere over radio and these just amazing
- 28:10characters. And then I comment from L. K. Williams, who says
- 28:12I listened to a great deal of old time radio and national public radio.
- 28:17Since I no longer have cable, just decided to go cold Turkey, no
- 28:21more TV. There are times when I'm listening to shows on other websites and
- 28:26forget that I won't hear your comments before and effort. It has occurred to
- 28:29me that listening to you is as close as I get to sharing that I
- 28:32love with something I love with a friend. Thank you for all you do
- 28:37when you share your love of radio with your listeners. Well, thanks so
- 28:41much. I appreciate your comment. And it is interesting. I'm on a
- 28:52on another old time radio group and listen and somebody on there who is under
- 28:56forty they post about it. They're wondering, is this for some people?
- 29:00It's like a secret hobby because when they you know, when they explain that
- 29:07they're into radio dramas, you know, no one that they know under forty
- 29:12even gets what they're talking about or what the interest is. Do dend to
- 29:18think that that's more of an American concept that's more common in other places in
- 29:23the world. I've been listening recently to some of the big finish production Doctor
- 29:30Who audios, and they have interviews with the cast members, and many of
- 29:36them talk about their love of radio and how they listen regularly to BBC Radio
- 29:45four's productions. So there are still others who can't relate. So appreciate your
- 29:49comments, and I hope that listeners are enjoying the show and sense of community
- 29:56we try to create here. Good to hear the fa All right, Well
- 30:02we're done with manhunt. So next week we're going to bring you the beginning
