- 0:01Speaker 1: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:07Speaker 1: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 0:22Speaker 2: Utah football legend, Zach Moss, who of course is now
- 0:25Speaker 2: roaming sidelines on the Utah radio broadcast as part of
- 0:30Speaker 2: our crew. with Bill Riley and Stevenson Sylvester, Zach Moss.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 0:36Speaker 3: .
- 0:41Speaker 2: .
- 0:53Speaker 3: .
- 0:55Speaker 2: What did you see
- 0:58Speaker 2: from this team that, well, we'll start on the positive end.
- 1:01Speaker 2: What did you see from this University of Utah football
- 1:03Speaker 2: team against an overmatched Idaho Vandals squad that made you
- 1:08Speaker 2: feel like some of the success we saw on Thursday
- 1:11Speaker 2: night can translate to this Saturday and next Saturday and beyond?
- 1:17Speaker 3: I saw a lot of good stuff, I think, mainly
- 1:20Speaker 3: on the defense that I really like. On the offensive
- 1:25Speaker 3: side of the ball, you know, I think we... I
- 1:28Speaker 3: think we did a lot of different things, which was
- 1:30Speaker 3: really cool just to put on film and, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 3: for them guys to kind of see what actually works,
- 1:34Speaker 3: what doesn't work versus a different defense. I love the
- 1:39Speaker 3: fact that we took a lot of shots downfield, even
- 1:43Speaker 3: though we didn't come up with a lot of them,
- 1:45Speaker 3: just the fact that we were aggressive because, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 3: once you get into those other games and being that aggressive,
- 1:52Speaker 3: those can turn in real easily to a lot of catches,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and you'll get a lot of 50-50 penalty falls and
- 1:57Speaker 3: things of that nature as well. So I thought overall
- 2:00Speaker 3: they did a lot of different things with a lot
- 2:03Speaker 3: of variety, and, you know, it resulted in obviously a
- 2:07Speaker 3: big win from the stats-wise of things. So, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: that was really good.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Anything that you were like, okay, that needs to be
- 2:17Speaker 2: cleaned up before Arkansas rolls into town?
- 2:21Speaker 3: I did love how we weren't able to move them
- 2:23Speaker 3: guys up front in our inside run game just all night.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I think Coach Scali even talked.
- 2:31Speaker 2: About it a little bit, right?
- 2:33Speaker 3: The unit, the offensive line unit, they started to get
- 2:36Speaker 3: better as the game went. And, you know, that makes
- 2:40Speaker 3: sense on why, right? But with going against a team
- 2:44Speaker 3: like that, right, with all respect due to Idaho, like
- 2:48Speaker 3: you would have loved to see us just dominate up front,
- 2:51Speaker 3: especially in between the two A and B gaps. I
- 2:55Speaker 3: think the guys did really well. Obviously, from the communication standpoint, things,
- 2:59Speaker 3: no pre-snap, no post-snap penalty. I think they had one
- 3:02Speaker 3: penalty all night overall as an offense. So, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 3: there's a ton of good things that they did on
- 3:08Speaker 3: the film. A lot of the outside plays, getting to
- 3:10Speaker 3: the edges, worked very well for our offense as well.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But I think just the inside run, because, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 3: that would have told me a lot. But, you know,
- 3:23Speaker 3: they get another chance this weekend.
- 3:27Speaker 2: We talked about this during camp and the summer, right?
- 3:30Speaker 2: There's only one ball and a lot of weapons. And
- 3:34Speaker 2: when you scored nine touchdowns in a game, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 2: everyone gets touches. And when you get the twos and
- 3:38Speaker 2: the threes and the fours play and everyone gets touches
- 3:41Speaker 2: and they spread the wealth around, you saw great things
- 3:44Speaker 2: from Pagan. You saw great things from way Sean in
- 3:47Speaker 2: both the passing game and the run game. Is there
- 3:51Speaker 2: anybody that you'd need to see more of against Arkansas
- 3:54Speaker 2: or Because it's not going to be letting the threes
- 3:58Speaker 2: and the fours play against the Razorbacks. At least we
- 4:00Speaker 2: don't think so. That would be nice.
- 4:04Speaker 3: But I think, honestly, we would have saw a lot
- 4:10Speaker 3: more of Dave Bray if he didn't have to go
- 4:13Speaker 3: to the concussion protocol early in that game. I think
- 4:16Speaker 3: that kind of hurt a lot of the different things
- 4:17Speaker 3: they kind of wanted to do probably as well. I
- 4:22Speaker 3: think Kyrie Shoals is another guy that they are probably
- 4:26Speaker 3: going to get into the mix a little bit more.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I love the fact that they spread the ball around
- 4:29Speaker 3: very well in this particular game, right? I think eight
- 4:33Speaker 3: different guys caught passes, which was really good to see
- 4:37Speaker 3: that they can count so many different people. I think
- 4:41Speaker 3: Connor Andrews will have a bigger game. You know, obviously
- 4:44Speaker 3: some things just on film that you just don't want
- 4:46Speaker 3: to put out there. Um, I love that. Like I said,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I love the fact that the, I think that game
- 4:51Speaker 3: was more so about just the different variations of formations
- 4:55Speaker 3: that they have and using different people in different spots
- 4:58Speaker 3: in an untraditional spot.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:00Speaker 3: You know, obviously, uh, tickling, running above a route, things
- 5:05Speaker 3: like that. And throwing the ball out of that, right?
- 5:08Speaker 3: So putting that on film in week one, I think
- 5:11Speaker 3: it was more so about just trying to give Arkansas
- 5:14Speaker 3: a little bit of a headache coming out of week
- 5:16Speaker 3: one and thinking about all the different things they're going
- 5:18Speaker 3: to have to guard.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Let's talk about the big picture world of college football
- 5:23Speaker 2: with a crazy weekend. Absolutely insane weekend. And of course,
- 5:28Speaker 2: Michigan was right at the center of that controversy with
- 5:31Speaker 2: Deep connections to this University of Utah program. Kyle Whittingham
- 5:35Speaker 2: barely escapes against Western Michigan in his first game as
- 5:39Speaker 2: the Michigan head coach. J.J. Buchanan and Smith Snowden both
- 5:42Speaker 2: had great games for the Wolverines. They're like two of
- 5:45Speaker 2: four players on the entire team who played well, it
- 5:48Speaker 2: seems like. But one second put back on the clock
- 5:52Speaker 2: after time expired. I'm sure if you didn't see it live,
- 5:55Speaker 2: you saw the replay and all the conversation. As a
- 5:57Speaker 2: guy who's played this game... at the highest level in
- 5:59Speaker 2: college football and at the highest level in the NFL.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Have you seen anything like that before? What were your thoughts?
- 6:05Speaker 2: Just walk me through your reaction to Michigan getting a
- 6:08Speaker 2: second back. Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 3: You know, I think overall I did watch, I actually
- 6:14Speaker 3: was able to catch the back end of that game
- 6:17Speaker 3: instead of having to watch that whole game, which seems
- 6:19Speaker 3: like it was a good idea doing that way. But yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 3: You know, the first Hail Mary throw, you know, I
- 6:27Speaker 3: didn't like that they attempted at it so fast. And then, obviously,
- 6:34Speaker 3: the huge controversial one, the second one that actually gets caught,
- 6:40Speaker 3: the first one, I don't know how you put time
- 6:44Speaker 3: back on the clock. I think the Big Ten did
- 6:48Speaker 3: come out with a statement of potentially I think it
- 6:51Speaker 3: touched someone. You know, I always remember when we would
- 6:54Speaker 3: do these clock situations and we would throw the ball
- 7:00Speaker 3: out of bounds, right? The quarterback was always told, hey,
- 7:04Speaker 3: we want to get this ball up and down as
- 7:06Speaker 3: quickly as possible, right? So I've always, you know, been...
- 7:11Speaker 3: pretty much trying to see the ball hit the ground
- 7:14Speaker 3: first before that clock stops. And I thought it was
- 7:17Speaker 3: definitely over.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Cause if it needs to hit.
- 7:21Speaker 3: The ground, the game was over, but I guess they
- 7:23Speaker 3: ruled it off of it touching a player. I'm not
- 7:27Speaker 3: a thousand percent accurate on that, but I didn't know
- 7:29Speaker 3: the clock will stop. If it hits a play, I
- 7:31Speaker 3: thought it had to hit the ground. So I was
- 7:33Speaker 3: a bit confused, but you know, supposedly, you know, they
- 7:38Speaker 3: got that second back, but you still got to go
- 7:40Speaker 3: out there and do it right. And he made a much,
- 7:44Speaker 3: much better throw the second time around, obviously with a
- 7:47Speaker 3: big target there. So, you know, they definitely pulled one
- 7:52Speaker 3: out of the hat. If I'm Western Michigan, it sucks
- 7:55Speaker 3: to lose.
- 7:55Speaker 2: A game that way.
- 7:56Speaker 3: I've never lost a game in that style. I've lost
- 7:58Speaker 3: one in Hail Mary, just never with time put back
- 8:01Speaker 3: on the clock and giving them two chances at it.
- 8:04Speaker 2: If you're on Michigan's team right now, what are you
- 8:07Speaker 2: saying to Bryce Underwood? He is a hot topic. People
- 8:10Speaker 2: are dragging him. People are writing him off. Obviously, he's
- 8:14Speaker 2: a high-profile player who's been given a lot of NIL money,
- 8:17Speaker 2: and that changes the way that people feel about you,
- 8:20Speaker 2: talk about you, et cetera. It feels more disappointing if
- 8:24Speaker 2: you don't live up to that and all those things.
- 8:26Speaker 2: But if you're a teammate, you've got to get this
- 8:28Speaker 2: guy right. What are you saying to that young man
- 8:30Speaker 2: if you're in the locker room with him and you
- 8:33Speaker 2: want to go out and beat Oklahoma on Saturday?
- 8:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, he's the engine of that team, right?
- 8:39Speaker 3: He's the reason that we even talk about Michigan overall, right,
- 8:43Speaker 3: no matter who the head coach is. You know, obviously
- 8:47Speaker 3: he's highly touted when he came in, huge prospect, a
- 8:50Speaker 3: lot of talent. dual threat quarterback. You know, I think
- 8:55Speaker 3: you have to figure out a way. This is the
- 8:56Speaker 3: part where, you know, a lot of these college athletes,
- 9:00Speaker 3: now that they're making all this money, this is the
- 9:02Speaker 3: other side of it as well. All the scrutiny, right, that...
- 9:06Speaker 3: just used to come almost from the local media to
- 9:08Speaker 3: some degree. Right now, it's the big media companies overall
- 9:12Speaker 3: that you're seeing on TV scrutinizing a kid, you know, 19, 20, whatever,
- 9:17Speaker 3: how old they be, just because of the amount of
- 9:20Speaker 3: money that he's putting in his pocket. You know, at
- 9:23Speaker 3: the end of the day, you still have to realize that,
- 9:25Speaker 3: you know, these guys are kids, even though they are
- 9:28Speaker 3: making a lot of money playing the game. You know,
- 9:32Speaker 3: that part of the human aspect, I feel like always
- 9:34Speaker 3: has to, you know, still be there um but he
- 9:38Speaker 3: does have the responsibility of a guy who is making
- 9:42Speaker 3: a lot of money right um you know like i
- 9:44Speaker 3: said that's the part of making the money right is
- 9:47Speaker 3: it's now everyone doesn't look at you as you know
- 9:50Speaker 3: essentially a poor college kid they're looking at you as
- 9:53Speaker 3: a college kid with tons of money and a lot
- 9:57Speaker 3: of different things of that nature. So you've got to perform.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I think, you know, no one is harder on themselves
- 10:03Speaker 3: than an athlete. You know, and that's usually why when
- 10:07Speaker 3: they watch, you know, the show, they listen to people
- 10:11Speaker 3: talking and things of that nature, right? They take it
- 10:13Speaker 3: even harder because they're already really hard on themselves. So,
- 10:16Speaker 3: you know, he just has to, you know.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Put the blinders on, right?
- 10:21Speaker 3: He can't have just one big game versus Oklahoma, right?
- 10:25Speaker 3: He has to now, because all those noises just come
- 10:28Speaker 3: right back to him after the game of Oklahoma. So
- 10:30Speaker 3: he has to figure out a way to put a
- 10:32Speaker 3: string of games together and really show the guy that
- 10:35Speaker 3: he was supposed to be, right? Or that he felt
- 10:37Speaker 3: like he even is meant to be, right? And I
- 10:40Speaker 3: think he has the right people in place overall, right? He's...
- 10:43Speaker 3: very raw, talented quarterback. And it's just about doing the
- 10:46Speaker 3: small things over and over and over. And, you know,
- 10:50Speaker 3: like I said, that's the good thing about football. When
- 10:51Speaker 3: it's that time of the year, you get a few
- 10:53Speaker 3: opportunities to really go out and show it. You got
- 10:55Speaker 3: to go out there and maximize it.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Last question before I cut you loose. If you could
- 11:03Speaker 2: go back and you get one more play, one second, right?
- 11:08Speaker 2: One mulligan like Michigan did. On a game-changing play, on
- 11:12Speaker 2: a game-deciding play for Utah football, you get to overdo it.
- 11:15Speaker 2: You get to run it back. What play are you
- 11:17Speaker 2: taking away and putting a second back on the clock
- 11:20Speaker 2: and letting Utah try it again?
- 11:24Speaker 3: Oof. For the Hail Mary attempt?
- 11:28Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't have to be a Hail Mary. People
- 11:31Speaker 2: are saying the penalty from a couple years ago, pick
- 11:37Speaker 2: up that flag and redo that play, that kind of
- 11:41Speaker 2: a thing.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Oh man.
- 11:47Speaker 2: One play.
- 11:49Speaker 3: That's tough. That's real tough. Um, I think I'm not,
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'm seeing if my memory serves me really well here
- 11:58Speaker 3: or not, but, uh, 2018 PAC 12 championship game versus Washington. Um,
- 12:05Speaker 3: there was a few calls in that game. I would
- 12:07Speaker 3: have loved to see that game go a little differently.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I think it was 10 to three. And I think
- 12:12Speaker 3: it was a big play that swung the momentum their way.
- 12:16Speaker 3: So maybe take that play away.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yes. So that one came in, I put this out
- 12:20Speaker 2: on Twitter and someone said that exact play because it was,
- 12:23Speaker 2: it was an interception that, Washington got an interception that
- 12:28Speaker 2: deflected off somebody's foot and bounced up into the air.
- 12:31Speaker 2: It was like a freak play. You take that play
- 12:33Speaker 2: away and the game changes completely. And maybe Utah gets
- 12:37Speaker 2: a Pac-12 championship a few years early.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe we would have got one there and then
- 12:44Speaker 3: those guys, and they would have got a few more after.
- 12:47Speaker 2: That as well as they did. So, yeah, I'll go
- 12:49Speaker 2: with that one.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I'll go with that one, yeah.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Somebody also sent in that final play against Cal when
- 13:00Speaker 2: the fourth down stop against Cal. I was like, maybe
- 13:02Speaker 2: Zach will say that one.
- 13:05Speaker 3: No, I haven't even, you know, I haven't even thought
- 13:06Speaker 3: about that one. Yeah, that would have been nice too,
- 13:10Speaker 3: but I think the championship game one would have been nice.
- 13:12Speaker 2: That's more impactful. The championship game's more impactful.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I've made up for that stop a
- 13:17Speaker 3: few times over.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I think that's safe to say, Zach. All right, man.
- 13:23Speaker 2: We'll see you up there on Saturday. Appreciate you giving
- 13:25Speaker 2: us some time today. Thanks, man. Yes, absolutely. Appreciate it.
