- 0:54Speaker 3: how to adult, and I forgot that I gotta go
- 0:57Speaker 3: to the dentist like every year, maybe a couple times
- 0:59Speaker 3: a year.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Just forgot that part.
- 1:01Speaker 3: My parents aren't taking care of that those appointments anymore.

- 1:20Speaker 3: you every single Wednesday, and we were also fired up
- 1:23Speaker 3: that every single Wednesday we get the doctor Steven Atherige.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Joining the show doc Good Morning, How you doing.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Morning Morning? Still figuring out this adulting thing as well.
- 1:32Speaker 2: So it's it's it's stinks, doesn't it.
- 1:35Speaker 4: It's not fun.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It's the worst, and you're a doctor. I don't. I don't.
- 1:41Speaker 4: I don't like the adult side.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I do like it's it was a while and still
- 1:45Speaker 3: probably not the most consistent with it, but like you
- 1:49Speaker 3: got to schedule your owndentist appointment, I got it.
- 1:51Speaker 4: It's important.
- 1:52Speaker 3: It is important and one of my like when I
- 1:54Speaker 3: got out of the NFL, one of my welcome to
- 1:57Speaker 3: actual like life and being a real human being outside
- 2:02Speaker 3: of the professional football world. It was like having to
- 2:05Speaker 3: book my own doctor appointment and sign up and go
- 2:08Speaker 3: to a waiting room.
- 2:09Speaker 4: It's it's a big deal, and I mean, you don't
- 2:10Speaker 4: do it.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I believe that.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I think they attribute the cause of George Washington's death
- 2:15Speaker 4: to or dental issues. It wouldn't tea got him, Yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 4: and I think eventually caused you know, some infections and
- 2:20Speaker 4: other things that you know, my god, first president got him.
- 2:24Speaker 4: It can get you to I know.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I got George Washington. I don't know.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I hadn't seen a lot of wooden teeth around, but
- 2:31Speaker 3: now yep, oh well, doc. So last week you were
- 2:35Speaker 3: in Fort Worth with the gymnastics team.
- 2:38Speaker 4: We were we were a great, great trip. Girls did awesome.
- 2:41Speaker 4: You know, just a couple not even a tenth of a
- 2:44Speaker 4: point shot and what point something like that, or they
- 2:47Speaker 4: did awesome. Really proud of them. They they battled through.
- 2:50Speaker 4: You know, we talked a lot about medical and I've
- 2:52Speaker 4: said before they're tough and they had to be there.
- 2:54Speaker 4: They were fighting at the end, and I'm sure a
- 2:56Speaker 4: lot of stuff that accumulates. So really really proud of that.
- 2:58Speaker 3: It's impressive that you know, you talked about on the
- 3:00Speaker 3: show when you called them from Fort Worth about all
- 3:03Speaker 3: the stuff, like there's a difference between hurt and injured, right,
- 3:06Speaker 3: but like that the abuse that they put onto their
- 3:09Speaker 3: body and like you see you see out you know,
- 3:13Speaker 3: beautiful and elegant and like easy they make the moves
- 3:16Speaker 3: look during the meat, but what you don't see is
- 3:18Speaker 3: like the amount of times they have to do that
- 3:20Speaker 3: and like push themselves in practice to be good at that.
- 3:24Speaker 3: So I'm sure like most of that stress comes from
- 3:27Speaker 3: just the training.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's it's it's a lot of work. It's
- 3:29Speaker 4: a lot of work that goes into it. Like you said,
- 3:31Speaker 4: it's just you only see a fraction of it. And
- 3:32Speaker 4: that's like really to be fair any sport. But I
- 3:35Speaker 4: feel like that's one where that's that's extremely true is
- 3:37Speaker 4: with the gymnastics, that the the work, not just the practice,
- 3:40Speaker 4: the preparation, but the medical, the preparation they have to
- 3:42Speaker 4: go to, the work the staff does, the training staff.
- 3:45Speaker 4: You know, Jenny the trainer with a gym, she does
- 3:46Speaker 4: a great job getting those girls ready. And but it's
- 3:48Speaker 4: it's you know, and then when I'm watching them doing
- 3:51Speaker 4: what they're doing, knowing that some of them are fighting
- 3:53Speaker 4: through it, you know, I'm I'm holding my breath probably
- 3:55Speaker 4: even more than the rest of their body because I'm like, oh, gosh,
- 3:57Speaker 4: hope that that injury doesn't flare ever right now, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: And it's it's it's it's it's impressive what they do
- 4:02Speaker 4: even without the injuries. But then you factor that in,
- 4:04Speaker 4: it's just that much more.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Well, you get a little adrenaline pumping too. Oh yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 3: maybe like the you know, if you got the same
- 4:10Speaker 3: injury and it's a meat that maybe not quite as
- 4:12Speaker 3: big as the national level, you know, you got a
- 4:14Speaker 3: little dreams, and I know that they have to control
- 4:17Speaker 3: that too. That's part of their trade, is controlling that
- 4:19Speaker 3: adrenaline flow. Yeah, you have to because you can't be
- 4:21Speaker 3: two over, too amped up. It's not kind of like
- 4:23Speaker 3: can't be a nut out there. But yeah, well we
- 4:25Speaker 3: got we got Jake Clark coming on the show at
- 4:27Speaker 3: eight thirty, So I can't wait to kind of give
- 4:29Speaker 3: his just rundown. I mean, I want to show like
- 4:32Speaker 3: his post meat speech.
- 4:34Speaker 2: To the girl. It's just great. He's a he's a
- 4:36Speaker 2: great steward.
- 4:37Speaker 4: He's been fantastic. He's such a such a good representative
- 4:40Speaker 4: for the university, like you said, but he's just you know,
- 4:43Speaker 4: it's such a healthy program where they're at, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 4: unfortunate that's not always the case with gymnastics. You look
- 4:47Speaker 4: at some of these programs around the country and you know,
- 4:50Speaker 4: it's not always the healthiest sport, not just from the
- 4:52Speaker 4: physical side, but a lot of times the mental stuff
- 4:54Speaker 4: that goes into it. And he does a fantastic job
- 4:57Speaker 4: of kind of having his thumb on the pulse of
- 4:59Speaker 4: what needs to be done and what doesn't need to
- 5:00Speaker 4: be done.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Do they shut those girls down for like a month now? Yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 3: got to right doctor's orders. Yeah, they need it, They've
- 5:07Speaker 3: earned it, Yeah for sure. All right, doc, let's talk
- 5:10Speaker 3: a let's talk a little bit. A lot of a
- 5:13Speaker 3: couple of injuries came to kind of the headlines yesterday
- 5:17Speaker 3: for LSU. Certainly the picture has been out for We've
- 5:24Speaker 3: had a picture out for multiple weeks, and they're like, so,
- 5:26Speaker 3: we didn't know. I kind of figured he was out
- 5:28Speaker 3: for the year, and we heard officially, yes, they kind
- 5:30Speaker 3: of out. I don't want to ask like specifically about
- 5:33Speaker 3: the injury, but as a former thrower myself, I was
- 5:38Speaker 3: telling the story about uh. I think yesterday I had
- 5:40Speaker 3: elbow tenonitis one year and it almost cost me the
- 5:43Speaker 3: last couple of years of my career because sometimes sometimes
- 5:47Speaker 3: you have these injuries and there's so many like small
- 5:49Speaker 3: muscles in your forearm in the elbow area that they
- 5:53Speaker 3: lock up. They they do their job for a reason.
- 5:55Speaker 3: They lock up to protect different things, and I just
- 5:58Speaker 3: could not get this one spot. And it was one
- 6:02Speaker 3: of those situations where it was like, all right, take
- 6:03Speaker 3: we're gonna take two months off. You're not gonna throw
- 6:05Speaker 3: a ball for two months. We're gonna rehabit, we're gonna strengthen,
- 6:09Speaker 3: we're going to do all different treatments on it.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And I did it. Two months later, I.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Threw the ball and it felt the exact same as
- 6:20Speaker 3: it did two months before, and I was like, all right, well,
- 6:22Speaker 3: I'm out of here. I'm gonna go try something else,
- 6:23Speaker 3: somewhere else.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And so it's one of.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Those situations where the body just did not do the
- 6:28Speaker 3: things that it wanted to, so I only had to
- 6:30Speaker 3: figure something else out. Is there a hope that sometimes
- 6:34Speaker 3: when you get these shoulder or elbow injuries, whatever it
- 6:36Speaker 3: may be, that the body takes over and does its
- 6:39Speaker 3: thing and then you just have to make a different assessment.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Is there is there like two diagnosis or assessments that
- 6:45Speaker 3: can come from the same injury when it comes to
- 6:47Speaker 3: like a highly used elbow shoulder situation for a thrower.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure there are. And it's you know, I
- 6:55Speaker 4: tell patients all the time, whether it's sar athletes or
- 6:57Speaker 4: in my clinic just of people that are coming in.
- 6:59Speaker 4: There's different types of injuries out there. There's some that
- 7:01Speaker 4: are very obvious. We know exactly with this injury that
- 7:03Speaker 4: this is the right treatment, that this is going to
- 7:05Speaker 4: be what we have to do. You know, if you
- 7:06Speaker 4: tear your ACL, we know we need to go reconstruct
- 7:08Speaker 4: in ACL. If you have a lot of these kind
- 7:11Speaker 4: of overuse injuries, which which is what most throwing injuries
- 7:14Speaker 4: are going to be. You know, most of the times, it's
- 7:16Speaker 4: going to be lost in lots of throwing over years
- 7:18Speaker 4: and years and years, kind of like with your example,
- 7:20Speaker 4: and really we weren't designed to be overhead throwers. That's
- 7:23Speaker 4: not that's kind of an unnatural motion for for for humans.
- 7:26Speaker 4: So when you do that over and over, for one,
- 7:28Speaker 4: you're going to have certain areas that just accumulate stress.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And even if you're doing everything perfect, but even more
- 7:33Speaker 4: so if you're overdoing it or have bad technique. But
- 7:36Speaker 4: then when you're dealing with some of these areas, you know,
- 7:37Speaker 4: if it's a you know, a ligament injury or a
- 7:40Speaker 4: tendon injury, or a stress injury to bone, which are
- 7:42Speaker 4: the things that we typically see, is these are areas
- 7:45Speaker 4: that don't always have good blood flow, these areas that
- 7:47Speaker 4: aren't always going to respond the same. So, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 4: I see a lot of patients with tennis elbow, which
- 7:52Speaker 4: is a you know, it's a tendon injury in the elbow.
- 7:54Speaker 4: It's kind of a similar thing to what we see.
- 7:55Speaker 4: And I tell them my patience all the time, this
- 7:57Speaker 4: is a weird problem. I was like, I wish I
- 7:58Speaker 4: could tell you that this is the right answer. It's
- 8:00Speaker 4: not to say, Okay, I know the right answer and
- 8:02Speaker 4: this is definitely it. And I kind of go through
- 8:03Speaker 4: this whole spiel where like, you know, there's there's things
- 8:04Speaker 4: we can do, there's you know, usually we try to
- 8:06Speaker 4: start with the safer at least lower invasive procedures, especially
- 8:10Speaker 4: in the general population, and then we kind of build
- 8:12Speaker 4: from there, and and it's not always an answer. Now
- 8:15Speaker 4: in the heart of the season, sometimes there's more pressure.
- 8:17Speaker 4: We still want to do things safely. We don't want
- 8:19Speaker 4: to put our athletes at risk, so sometimes it will
- 8:21Speaker 4: be a little bit more quick to jump to some
- 8:23Speaker 4: of those more I wouldn't say extreme, but a little
- 8:25Speaker 4: bit further down the list treatments. But even then you
- 8:28Speaker 4: don't always know the response you're gonna get, and nobody does.
- 8:31Speaker 4: It's not a it's not an easy thing.
- 8:33Speaker 3: So so you probably start with what like the biological
- 8:37Speaker 3: like injections and then if that did work, then it's
- 8:39Speaker 3: surgery like repair.
- 8:41Speaker 4: A lot of times that's where we end up, especially
- 8:42Speaker 4: the athlete. A lot of times we'll skip, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 4: like I said, with the a lot of these injections.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I think they're great options. They're safe, they're healthy. You know,
- 8:49Speaker 4: things like PRP, some of the stem cells, things like
- 8:51Speaker 4: that we sometimes do. And that's gonna be more the
- 8:53Speaker 4: soft tissue, the the ligaments, the tendons, the muscles. So yeah,
- 8:57Speaker 4: sometimes we're quicker to do those treatments. But even then,
- 8:59Speaker 4: you know, you got to talk with the athletes. You
- 9:00Speaker 4: gotta decide what they want to do too. It's always
- 9:02Speaker 4: their decision too, that's the first and foremost, and so
- 9:05Speaker 4: we kind of give them the options. But and then
- 9:08Speaker 4: you know rehab that the trainers do a great job.
- 9:10Speaker 4: They we get our physical therapist involved, we get all
- 9:12Speaker 4: the all all the things on deck. But sometimes these
- 9:15Speaker 4: things just don't go the way you want them to,
- 9:17Speaker 4: and sometimes the body, to your point, doesn't respond. We
- 9:20Speaker 4: hope it does.
- 9:20Speaker 3: But Doc, I know you're the doctor and everything, but
- 9:24Speaker 3: let me give you a piece of advice. Elbow ten
- 9:27Speaker 3: and itis PRP is crap.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Just want you to know that fair enough, fair enough.
- 9:31Speaker 3: That's what I had. And then I waited two months
- 9:33Speaker 3: and then nothing changed. It probably didn't feel good when
- 9:35Speaker 3: you got it. Oh god, it was hurt. It felt
- 9:38Speaker 3: better than the stem cells. But the stim cells did
- 9:39Speaker 3: actually work. It took about a month though, maybe two
- 9:42Speaker 3: months before.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yeah, sometimes you gotta and look. Sometimes even if it works,
- 9:45Speaker 4: it takes time. Yeah, it's not. It's not always gonna
- 9:47Speaker 4: be a quick fix. Even then, it was wild because
- 9:49Speaker 4: they were like, all right, these are the stem cells.
- 9:50Speaker 4: They take about four to six weeks to like work,
- 9:54Speaker 4: and you start feeling anything about five weeks.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I woke up one day and know they what, it
- 9:58Speaker 2: didn't hurt at all. This is fantastic. That worked well.
- 10:01Speaker 4: We've had we've had pretty results the ones we've done.
- 10:04Speaker 3: People throw really fast these days, really fast pictures like
- 10:10Speaker 3: if you don't throw ninety five, it's like you're slowed
- 10:14Speaker 3: these days, which is which is a wild world.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It's great so.
- 10:17Speaker 3: People body mechanics being able to everybody have access to
- 10:23Speaker 3: to film and teachings, whether it's on YouTube, whether it's
- 10:25Speaker 3: on you know, watching a big league pitcher and analysts
- 10:30Speaker 3: breaking down as pitching motion, everybody understands that it's not
- 10:33Speaker 3: just about muscles that strong people that throw the ball
- 10:37Speaker 3: hard or strong people that hit the ball far. It's
- 10:40Speaker 3: about body mechanics creating levers and torque and lag and
- 10:46Speaker 3: speed of the bat, speed of the arm, and whip
- 10:48Speaker 3: the whip motion that creates a lot of stress on
- 10:51Speaker 3: an elbow. Pay me out so much on the shoulder
- 10:54Speaker 3: because but it's it's all on the whipping motion. And
- 10:57Speaker 3: you know people talk about the elbow being like the
- 11:01Speaker 3: handle of a whip. It's got to lead everything and
- 11:04Speaker 3: everything comes through that creates I mean, there's ligaments. God
- 11:07Speaker 3: made these ligaments to do stuff. I don't know if
- 11:10Speaker 3: he made everybody to be able to throw one hundred
- 11:14Speaker 3: miles an hour. Yeah, but you do you contort your
- 11:17Speaker 3: body and to get to that speed because that's what
- 11:20Speaker 3: you got to do to compete. Do you have to
- 11:25Speaker 3: be a certain like a certain body likes people can
- 11:30Speaker 3: do it. People have been throwing one hundred miles an
- 11:32Speaker 3: hour for half a half a century, right, But it's
- 11:36Speaker 3: the certain type of people with a certain type of build,
- 11:38Speaker 3: with a certain type of mechanics. Not everybody can do that, Like,
- 11:41Speaker 3: what's what are the what are the dangers like long
- 11:43Speaker 3: term of you know, you see high schoolers throwing ninety
- 11:46Speaker 3: eight ninety nine miles an hour.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think one thing that we've kind
- 11:50Speaker 4: of come to understand is is the harder you throw,
- 11:53Speaker 4: the more stress. And that's just kind of physics, you know,
- 11:56Speaker 4: we kind of know that that's any situation, the harder,
- 11:58Speaker 4: faster something moves, it's going to have more force. And
- 12:03Speaker 4: so when you start moving that arm faster and faster
- 12:05Speaker 4: and putting more torque on that elbow, it is going
- 12:08Speaker 4: to have more problems. Now, some people, just by the
- 12:11Speaker 4: way they are made genetically predisposed, some people are never
- 12:15Speaker 4: gonna be able to throw hundred miles an hour. You
- 12:17Speaker 4: have to have some of the right predispositions. And it's
- 12:19Speaker 4: not just strength. It's going to be kind of something
- 12:21Speaker 4: because you have to put that torque. How much laxity
- 12:22Speaker 4: of your arm do you have, how much are you
- 12:24Speaker 4: able to develop, and a lot of those things, so
- 12:26Speaker 4: it's not there's a lot that goes into it. And
- 12:29Speaker 4: then and then yeah, some people are gonna be less
- 12:31Speaker 4: less injury prone. You know, I think we had talked
- 12:34Speaker 4: to one of the episodes talking about like, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 4: guy like Nolan Ryan who literally made it all the
- 12:37Speaker 4: way to the end of his career, which was a
- 12:39Speaker 4: long career before he ever had any like Tommy John
- 12:41Speaker 4: type injury. And this is a guy who threw gas
- 12:43Speaker 4: and threw a lot more than guys they throw. He
- 12:45Speaker 4: was he was built a little different. Now you can
- 12:47Speaker 4: also talk about the training and the different ways we
- 12:49Speaker 4: do things now versus then, and there's probably something yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 4: and look, there there may be something to that, but
- 12:54Speaker 4: also the fact that he did what he did for
- 12:57Speaker 4: as long as he did, you know, there was just
- 12:59Speaker 4: some guys are made different, and so the reality of it,
- 13:03Speaker 4: we know some people have more dense tendons, more dense ligaments,
- 13:05Speaker 4: more dense bone. We know there's a lot of things
- 13:07Speaker 4: that go into it, and there's some of these things
- 13:09Speaker 4: are gonna be more protective. So there is some predisposition
- 13:13Speaker 4: for all these things, both the ability and the injury risk,
- 13:16Speaker 4: and some that we understand, but most that we're still
- 13:18Speaker 4: kind of figuring out.
- 13:20Speaker 3: All right, Doc, the question that has been burning in
- 13:23Speaker 3: my brain for about twenty four hours now, what the
- 13:26Speaker 3: heck's a hammetbone.
- 13:28Speaker 4: So in your wrist, you've got what are called your
- 13:32Speaker 4: carpl and your metacarpal bones. So you have the long
- 13:34Speaker 4: bones of the forearm that come down, so the radius
- 13:36Speaker 4: and the elena they come down, and there's a grouping
- 13:38Speaker 4: of several little small bones right there. Those are your
- 13:40Speaker 4: carpal bones, and the hama is one of those. So
- 13:44Speaker 4: if you think about the different bones in there, and
- 13:46Speaker 4: it's one of the ones that we do think about
- 13:48Speaker 4: in sports, particularly like racket or clubs or bats, so
- 13:51Speaker 4: and you're gripping a club like so it's a golf
- 13:53Speaker 4: injury too. I know in this sense we're obviously talking
- 13:55Speaker 4: about baseball, but it's a common baseball, softball, golf, anything
- 13:58Speaker 4: where you're gripping a racket and and especially repetitive motions
- 14:02Speaker 4: kind of like the elbow with throwing. Most of these injuries,
- 14:05Speaker 4: or at least a lot of them, are going to
- 14:07Speaker 4: be from that repetitive stress in that area. Now, a
- 14:09Speaker 4: lot of times the ultimate injury will come from something
- 14:12Speaker 4: that's a little bit higher stress, like you're trying to
- 14:13Speaker 4: check a swing and suddenly stop it, or in a golfer,
- 14:16Speaker 4: sometimes they kind of come up a little fat and
- 14:17Speaker 4: hit hit the ground. That's a lot of times when
- 14:19Speaker 4: you see the actual injury, but there's also a lot
- 14:21Speaker 4: of thought that is probably an accumulated stress injury as well.
- 14:24Speaker 4: So it's probably a little bit of both. But it's
- 14:27Speaker 4: a it's a bone here on the pinky side of
- 14:30Speaker 4: the wrist, so you kind of kind of right there
- 14:32Speaker 4: and what's called the hypothen r area. It's just kind
- 14:34Speaker 4: of right at the base of that and it's kind
- 14:36Speaker 4: of right in that crease area. So it's actually one
- 14:37Speaker 4: of the bones that that helps make up the carpal tunnel.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Right with the hand like connects to the arm right
- 14:43Speaker 3: or right next right there, and you have right in
- 14:46Speaker 3: that that pinky side, and you and and and some
- 14:49Speaker 3: and again with that if you think about the rotation
- 14:52Speaker 3: that goes in and especially you're suddenly trying to stop
- 14:54Speaker 3: it to sometimes when you come to a sudden stop.
- 14:56Speaker 4: So either if you like said, hit the ground in
- 14:58Speaker 4: a golf club or if you're trying to check a
- 14:59Speaker 4: swing or some something like that, that's a lot of times
- 15:01Speaker 4: you see these injuries.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I think a lumberjack would get that too.
- 15:05Speaker 4: It probably do. They probably don't. I don't see too
- 15:06Speaker 4: many lumberjacks in the clinic. You know, maybe maybe move
- 15:10Speaker 4: all watches up north, maybe then we see more of it.
- 15:13Speaker 4: But but you know, it's, it's, it's and then it's
- 15:16Speaker 4: It's not always an easy diagnosis. It's missed a lot
- 15:18Speaker 4: of times on X rays, So a lot of times
- 15:19Speaker 4: you just go get a standard actually.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Just because it's like I'm trying to think of like
- 15:22Speaker 3: an X ray of an arm wrists, Like I feel
- 15:24Speaker 3: like there's just a lot of floating muscles or floating
- 15:26Speaker 3: bones in there.
- 15:27Speaker 4: A lot of small bones, and yeah, sometimes they do
- 15:29Speaker 4: kind of look like they're floating in there. I mean
- 15:31Speaker 4: they obviously they all have different ligaments of attachments, but
- 15:33Speaker 4: it does kind of look that way on the X ray.
- 15:35Speaker 4: And then there's a little there's what's called the hook
- 15:36Speaker 4: of the hamma, so it's a little projection that comes
- 15:38Speaker 4: off of it, and that's usually where the fracture is.
- 15:40Speaker 4: And because of the the you know, two D nature
- 15:44Speaker 4: of an X ray sometimes really hard to see, so
- 15:46Speaker 4: you really need to get you know a lot of
- 15:47Speaker 4: times a NIMRH or c T scan to diagnose it.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Sometimes you'll see it on the x ray. But you know,
- 15:51Speaker 4: it's it's it's often missed.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Are there any other famous carpels?
- 15:56Speaker 5: Uh?
- 15:56Speaker 4: Risk Probably the one that's talked about the most outside
- 15:59Speaker 4: of that and is probably the skin a foid skateboard
- 16:01Speaker 4: is is is a little bone that's more on the
- 16:03Speaker 4: other side, a little closer to the radial side of
- 16:04Speaker 4: the wrist or the thumb side of the wrist. It's
- 16:07Speaker 4: it's mostly associated with with falls on an outstretched hand
- 16:11Speaker 4: or what we call a foosh injury with that one.
- 16:13Speaker 4: It's also one that's it's, it's it's talked about. It's
- 16:15Speaker 4: probably you see fractures of that and a lot more.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Uh.
- 16:18Speaker 4: And it's one that canna be a snake in the
- 16:19Speaker 4: grass too though, because sometimes missed on an X ray
- 16:21Speaker 4: and if if you don't treat these appropriately, they can
- 16:24Speaker 4: develop into chronic you know, risk issues. So you know
- 16:27Speaker 4: those are those are two you always kind of as
- 16:28Speaker 4: a physician, need to be suspicious of, you know, one
- 16:31Speaker 4: more on the thumb side, one more on the pinky side.
- 16:33Speaker 4: The mechanism of the injury is always important. Classic skatepoid,
- 16:37Speaker 4: classic skateboard.
- 16:38Speaker 2: What'd you call it?
- 16:39Speaker 4: A fush all on outstretched hand?
- 16:44Speaker 2: Hum, all right, got a hammet, we've got a skaphoid. Foush.
- 16:49Speaker 7: We are learning. So the privateer thing.
- 16:53Speaker 4: I did not actually, did you hear? I did catch
- 16:55Speaker 4: that up? Yeah, yeah, I appreciate that. Thank privateer is
- 16:59Speaker 4: a legal classy pirate, classy pirates.
- 17:03Speaker 2: In the class. Yeah, we did, and they actually fight
- 17:06Speaker 2: for their country.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I think, well, I think that was uh what's the
- 17:09Speaker 4: famous pirate down in New Orleans? Uh, John or what's
- 17:12Speaker 4: his name? Yeah, when he I think at one point
- 17:16Speaker 4: I think he was a private mascot. I think if
- 17:18Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 17:19Speaker 2: A privateer, so he's not.
- 17:21Speaker 4: He did a little bit of both. I think I
- 17:23Speaker 4: think at one point he was a pirate and then
- 17:25Speaker 4: he was a dark kind yeah, to kind of get
- 17:27Speaker 4: a pardon, kind of get out of trouble. I think
- 17:30Speaker 4: I might his historians if I'm wrong that I apologize.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Maybe he was a mercenary.
- 17:35Speaker 4: I think it was one of those kind of deals
- 17:36Speaker 4: where he.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Was he was like the best in the best, best
- 17:39Speaker 3: in the game at the pirate game.
- 17:41Speaker 8: They created him.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think I really think it was something. Again,
- 17:46Speaker 4: I might be wrong, but I feel like it was
- 17:48Speaker 4: the sort of say hey, well, we'll kind of forget
- 17:50Speaker 4: those things he did if you help us out here.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Kind of like Jay, they recruit a little power for
- 17:53Speaker 3: their lineup, and they recruit the best pirate to be
- 17:55Speaker 3: a privateer like that. Okay, last question carpal tunnel syndrome,
- 18:03Speaker 3: which which carpool were talking.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Well, yes, and one of the ones that helps make
- 18:08Speaker 4: up a tunnel is the is the hammet that we're
- 18:10Speaker 4: talking about a moment ago. So again, carpal bones. There's
- 18:14Speaker 4: on your palm side, you have some tendons, ligaments, and
- 18:17Speaker 4: nerves and stuff. Specifically some tendons and nerves that run
- 18:20Speaker 4: through this little natural tunnel that goes on top of
- 18:22Speaker 4: the bones. And then there's like a fiber sheet that
- 18:25Speaker 4: sits on top of it, and you have what's called
- 18:26Speaker 4: the media nerve, which the nerve that goes to the
- 18:29Speaker 4: pinky and the thumb, and if for whatever reason, if
- 18:32Speaker 4: that area gets too tight, if it gets compressed, it
- 18:34Speaker 4: will compress that nerve, usually some kind of either injury, inflammatory,
- 18:38Speaker 4: or overuse conditions, and then you'll get some numbness, tingling,
- 18:41Speaker 4: usually on the thumb side of the hand, the thumb
- 18:43Speaker 4: and the index finger. Sometimes pain, sometimes numbnes sometimes even
- 18:46Speaker 4: weakness can develop in your grip and things like that,
- 18:49Speaker 4: and if it's you know, if it lingers, sometimes it's
- 18:51Speaker 4: something you have to go in and relieve some of
- 18:52Speaker 4: that pressure surgically.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Doc, we gotta learn learn on today like good day, skaphoids, fooshes,
- 19:03Speaker 3: carpal tunnels. I appreciate it, yeah, Hans, Doc, I really
- 19:08Speaker 3: appreciate every week coming in and dropping a little knowledge
- 19:11Speaker 3: on us. And hopefully we taught you something about privateers.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Yeah, learning something new.
- 19:15Speaker 3: So it's a little little give and take here, just
- 19:17Speaker 3: getting our learn on here and off the bench this
- 19:19Speaker 3: morning on a Wednesday. So Doc, we appreciate your time.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Thank you as always, and we will see you next
- 19:26Speaker 3: week on the other side of the NFL draft.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Let's go, all right, go Tigers, Go Tigers. Thank you Dot.

- 19:46Speaker 3: whatever you want to do. And if you don't have

- 21:55Speaker 3: Now, what exactly a hammet bone is you want to
- 21:58Speaker 3: thank doc for sure? And I think a dental first
- 22:01Speaker 3: sponsor and Wednesday Show as always. Uh, we did a
- 22:10Speaker 3: little research on Jean Lafitte at the break. Okay, so
- 22:17Speaker 3: again to explain the deris wayne a privateer and a
- 22:20Speaker 3: pirate private A privateer operates with a government letter of marquee,
- 22:25Speaker 3: so making their raids against enemy ships legal, whereas pirates,
- 22:30Speaker 3: of course attack any ship illegally.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Lafitte used these.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Legal documents to justify capturing Spanish vessels, particularly while leading
- 22:40Speaker 3: a colony in Galveston, he was called the gentleman pirate.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Do you know that? Just learn that?
- 22:45Speaker 7: I do love Lafitte's.
- 22:46Speaker 3: In New Orleans he was called the gentleman pirate or
- 22:49Speaker 3: the king of oo. Well no, huh, barrataria.
- 22:56Speaker 7: Yeah, the it's like here in Louisiana.
- 22:59Speaker 3: The okay, sorry, that's probably a word I should know,
- 23:03Speaker 3: but I don't. Let's see Battle of New Orleans. Despite
- 23:07Speaker 3: his lawless activity, he was praised as a hero in
- 23:10Speaker 3: the War of eighteen twelve, supplying weapons in aiding Andrew
- 23:13Speaker 3: Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Yeah, shout out.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Sean Lafi Hey you do you buddy?
- 23:21Speaker 8: Legendary privateer slash pirate.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Again.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Crazy that it took LSU defeating UNO to learn exactly
- 23:37Speaker 3: what a privateer is.
- 23:39Speaker 8: Yeah, I never questioned it, feeling something we should.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Have learned in school, right, just kind of glossed over,
- 23:47Speaker 3: Oh privateer, they mean pirate, right, they just misspelled it.
- 23:50Speaker 3: That's kind of what I thought when Cassie, when you
- 23:52Speaker 3: threw up.
- 23:53Speaker 2: The yeah you feel at the logo earlier.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Anyhow, I'm really excited about having Jay Clark on the
- 24:03Speaker 3: show here coming up and I don't know, three or
- 24:06Speaker 3: four minutes when we come back from break right now,
- 24:08Speaker 3: So really excited to see him. Of course, I let's
- 24:10Speaker 3: do gymnastics team finish and runner up in Nationals this
- 24:14Speaker 3: past weekend, but absolutely nothing to be disappointed about. His
- 24:21Speaker 3: team fought hard and executed incredibly well at the end
- 24:25Speaker 3: of season in the biggest moment of the season. So
- 24:29Speaker 3: we're going to discuss his team the season, what was
- 24:33Speaker 3: the gymnastics meet this past weekend, and just really going forward,
- 24:39Speaker 3: how they how the gymnastics team is going to be
- 24:41Speaker 3: looking next year as well. So why don't we go
- 24:45Speaker 3: to break on time right now?
- 24:47Speaker 8: Which is I mean, I wouldn't say it's on time.
- 24:51Speaker 8: I mean it's on time for the segment, but it's
- 24:53Speaker 8: a short segment because we went long in the first one.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but no, we're on time right now. Yeah, come
- 25:00Speaker 2: on to Laudra. Whose team are you on?
- 25:05Speaker 7: I'm on TV.
- 25:06Speaker 2: If we say it's on time, it's definitely on time.
- 25:08Speaker 7: It's on time. Technically, yeah, technically it is.
- 25:11Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna go a break.
- 25:12Speaker 3: When we come back on the other side of the break,
- 25:14Speaker 3: we will have your head coach of the LSU gymnastics team,
- 25:17Speaker 3: mister Jay Clark, joining the show right here on Off

- 26:51Speaker 6: You left it out there. That was a lot of
- 26:54Speaker 6: gutsy performances for people that are hurting and all kinds

- 27:27Speaker 6: not over despair.
- 27:28Speaker 2: It's just a little.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Disappointment, but knowing that you did everything you could.
- 27:33Speaker 2: You laid it on the line.
- 27:37Speaker 6: That's sports, guys, that's where it goes.
- 27:40Speaker 9: We'll be better for it.
- 27:42Speaker 6: I am so prigging proud of all. I'm not gonna
- 27:44Speaker 6: stop saying that.
- 27:47Speaker 3: There is Coach Jay Clark after National Championship Meet and
- 27:52Speaker 3: joining us now on the phone is coach j Clark
- 27:55Speaker 3: joined us coach how are you doing?
- 27:56Speaker 5: Good morning, Good morning guys, how are you all the
- 27:59Speaker 5: state doing?
- 28:00Speaker 2: Fantastic? Coach?
- 28:01Speaker 3: I saw that the other day for the first time
- 28:04Speaker 3: when when it was posted on social media, and gave
- 28:08Speaker 3: me goosebumps because I've been in that situation countless times
- 28:12Speaker 3: in my former sports career and been in those situations
- 28:17Speaker 3: where you knew you laid it all on the line,
- 28:18Speaker 3: and certainly your ladies did and a fantastic performances past weekend.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Just give us a give us a quick just overview
- 28:26Speaker 3: of how you thought the from Thursday through the weekend
- 28:30Speaker 3: went for your ladies.
- 28:32Speaker 5: Well, I thought on Thursday we were we were a
- 28:35Speaker 5: little tight, and I think, you know, a lot of
- 28:38Speaker 5: that came from, you know, the bulk of the bulk
- 28:41Speaker 5: of our production on our team last year were freshmen
- 28:44Speaker 5: and sophomores, and really, you know, what they came into
- 28:49Speaker 5: this year knowing was that they they definitely wanted to advance.
- 28:52Speaker 5: I thought they tightened up a little bit on the
- 28:54Speaker 5: first day, and then during the off day, and as
- 28:58Speaker 5: we got ready to go into finals, you could feel
- 29:01Speaker 5: the air come out of the balloon, and they they
- 29:04Speaker 5: really their whole demeanor, the way they talked, the way
- 29:08Speaker 5: they were communicating with us, everything we did in team meetings,
- 29:12Speaker 5: and you know, in terms of messaging and and prep.
- 29:17Speaker 5: From a mental standpoint, you could really feel like they
- 29:20Speaker 5: were they were in a great place and and I
- 29:24Speaker 5: was just, you know, I was just really proud of
- 29:26Speaker 5: the way they attacked that that final, that final session,
- 29:30Speaker 5: that final day, because it was it could have gone
- 29:34Speaker 5: any of any of a number of ways. And the
- 29:37Speaker 5: season started with number one and number two in a tie.
- 29:42Speaker 5: When we were out at the Sprouse Limitational. That abc
- 29:46Speaker 5: thing that happened in the first Men of the Year
- 29:49Speaker 5: and then it ended with a less than one tenth
- 29:52Speaker 5: deal with the same two teams. At the end, I
- 29:56Speaker 5: just felt like our team could not have done any
- 29:58Speaker 5: more than they did. And as a coach, really, you
- 30:03Speaker 5: you know, you you hope that you get to the
- 30:05Speaker 5: end of the year where you have no regrets yourself
- 30:07Speaker 5: and don't look back and think, well, I should have
- 30:09Speaker 5: prepared them the better, I should have done this differently,
- 30:11Speaker 5: I should have you and you want to watch your
- 30:14Speaker 5: team be able to feel the same way too, that
- 30:16Speaker 5: they that they put it all out there. And that's
- 30:18Speaker 5: really all I was trying to communicate to them at
- 30:20Speaker 5: the end was that, yeah, we're disappointed. Of course we
- 30:23Speaker 5: wanted to win that thing, but particularly in a in
- 30:25Speaker 5: a sport that is driven so subjectively, you know, I
- 30:30Speaker 5: just didn't think our kids had anything to hang their
- 30:32Speaker 5: heads about. And just I'm as proud of that team
- 30:35Speaker 5: as I've been. I've been part of eight national titles
- 30:37Speaker 5: in my career and and I couldn't be more proud
- 30:41Speaker 5: of this one.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Yeah, anybody, anybody that was able to lucky enough to
- 30:45Speaker 3: go to see your team compete this year at at
- 30:48Speaker 3: a gymnastics met or watch them on TV. I tell
- 30:51Speaker 3: you this weekend Thursday and Saturday, me and my girls
- 30:54Speaker 3: were locked in to everything. That was kinda coach like,
- 30:57Speaker 3: you got so much to be proud of with this team,
- 31:00Speaker 3: and like to me, it all you can tell a
- 31:03Speaker 3: special group about what happens when they're backs against the wall.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Once y'all did Thursday going into that final rotation down
- 31:10Speaker 3: in third place behind Florida and Georgia, I believe, and
- 31:15Speaker 3: y'all came back and absolutely crushed it and nailed it
- 31:18Speaker 3: on the floor to get in to the final national
- 31:20Speaker 3: championship meet. Like to me, spoke volumes to you your
- 31:24Speaker 3: program and specifically that chemistry of the girls.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Well and we you know, we were kind of sleepwalking
- 31:30Speaker 5: midway through that meet. We were, you know, couldn't get
- 31:33Speaker 5: out of our own weight. And I think you see
- 31:35Speaker 5: that in sports a lot, you know, when when a
- 31:37Speaker 5: loss on the line, sometimes you know, nerves can get
- 31:40Speaker 5: the best of you. But really, you know, coming out
- 31:43Speaker 5: of balance being that day, Caitlyn Chio circled them up
- 31:45Speaker 5: and gave them one of the most emotionally charged tongue lashings.
- 31:52Speaker 5: You know that you could that you would ever hear
- 31:55Speaker 5: out of a little little voice like that, but I
- 31:58Speaker 5: thought it was it was great. They they really they
- 32:00Speaker 5: looked up at the scoreboard, they realized they were if
- 32:03Speaker 5: they would just get out of their way and be normal,
- 32:05Speaker 5: they were in a good spot. And you're right, we
- 32:07Speaker 5: lit it up on that last event, and particularly of
- 32:10Speaker 5: Mari Drayton and Khalia Lincoln and Kaitlyn chioh just you know,
- 32:14Speaker 5: finished out that rotation and really left no doubt that
- 32:17Speaker 5: we belonged in that final four.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Yeah, this absolutely looked like powerhouses on the on the floor,
- 32:22Speaker 3: which was a ton of fun to watch. And then
- 32:24Speaker 3: of course on Saturday, you come and you know, score
- 32:27Speaker 3: the second highest score in the NCAA Finals in program
- 32:31Speaker 3: history with an incredible formance. You know, you ran into
- 32:35Speaker 3: a one heck of a team in Oklahoma. So I
- 32:39Speaker 3: loved hearing what you said to your team. That's why
- 32:41Speaker 3: we kind of opened the sevent because, like I've seen that,
- 32:43Speaker 3: like your girls laid it on the line, and I
- 32:45Speaker 3: hope they are holding their head up high and knowing
- 32:47Speaker 3: that they did everything. And you just brought up kaylen
- 32:50Speaker 3: Chio as well, first perfect ten in national championship history
- 32:55Speaker 3: for LSU's program. And what is I think thirteenth on
- 32:59Speaker 3: the sea, something like that.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Yeah, something like that. I don't meet you know, I've
- 33:05Speaker 5: rabble a. I'm like media always wants to talk about
- 33:07Speaker 5: all these things. But but you know, she, uh, she's unbelievable, really,
- 33:11Speaker 5: and you know, the level of consistency that that she
- 33:15Speaker 5: shows in no matter the circumstance has just been Uh,
- 33:19Speaker 5: it's been something amazing to watch. And I've been doing
- 33:22Speaker 5: this a long time. I don't know that I've ever
- 33:24Speaker 5: seen anything quite like it. But she she's incredible. The
- 33:28Speaker 5: kids did an amazing job. You know, they they've got
- 33:31Speaker 5: so much to be proud. We're disappointed. It's already fuel
- 33:34Speaker 5: in our fire. I had individual meetings with half the
- 33:36Speaker 5: team yesterday and you know, I think the we've got
- 33:40Speaker 5: twenty one of those twenty four routines returning uh next year,
- 33:45Speaker 5: and they're they're already talking about, uh, let's get ready.
- 33:49Speaker 5: So you know, really, if you if you got to
- 33:52Speaker 5: find a silver lining to finish in second, you know
- 33:54Speaker 5: what second place can feel like sometimes. But it's it's uh,
- 33:58Speaker 5: the silver lining is that where the bulk of our
- 34:01Speaker 5: team is coming back, and I think it's just going
- 34:04Speaker 5: to drive them even further to to create a level
- 34:07Speaker 5: of excellence for themselves that even with this team as
- 34:10Speaker 5: great as they did in the fall, it took us
- 34:12Speaker 5: a little while to kind of find what that standard
- 34:15Speaker 5: was going to be. And once they did, they really
- 34:17Speaker 5: took off. And I think we'll have a much better
- 34:19Speaker 5: starting point with this group going into the next year.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Yeah, coach, that's where I was kind of going to
- 34:24Speaker 3: head next with you on kind of going forward looking
- 34:28Speaker 3: to next season. I know that you know it's only
- 34:30Speaker 3: a couple of days after the National Championship meet, so
- 34:33Speaker 3: you don't ever want to like turn the page too fast,
- 34:36Speaker 3: because you do kind of want to, like, you got
- 34:37Speaker 3: to celebrate the good stuff.
- 34:38Speaker 2: You got to celebrate.
- 34:39Speaker 3: That's why we do it, right, That's why you work
- 34:41Speaker 3: so hard, is to celebrate a little bit and kind
- 34:43Speaker 3: of look back and reflect. But there's a job to do.
- 34:46Speaker 3: You do have to get ready for next season. And
- 34:48Speaker 3: you talked about the amount of talent and returning and
- 34:51Speaker 3: core leadership that you got, But tell us about in
- 34:54Speaker 3: the gymnastics world, how you know, the ever changing landscape
- 34:59Speaker 3: of college athletics, how that kind of effects your program
- 35:02Speaker 3: and kind of how y'all are going to handle returners,
- 35:06Speaker 3: high school Transfer portal, all that, all that stuff.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Well, yesterday was a crazy day, you know. We we
- 35:13Speaker 5: were we had just gotten back and all this stuff,
- 35:17Speaker 5: and I'm doing individual meetings with members of the team,
- 35:21Speaker 5: and Garrett's running into my office every five ten minutes
- 35:24Speaker 5: let me know something else is going on in the portal.
- 35:26Speaker 5: And so we're we're so we're we're scheduling. We're scheduling
- 35:30Speaker 5: visits with potential transfers over the next couple of weeks
- 35:33Speaker 5: right now, and and got it. We're in a pretty
- 35:36Speaker 5: good spot with a couple of them and feel good
- 35:38Speaker 5: about you know, what we'll be able to add. But
- 35:41Speaker 5: the reality is is that you know, the core of
- 35:44Speaker 5: of of what we need is already here and uh
- 35:48Speaker 5: and and not going anywhere. So we're going to add
- 35:50Speaker 5: some pieces, just you know, to make sure that we've
- 35:53Speaker 5: got enough depth and that that we've got the the
- 35:57Speaker 5: insurance policy that we need should we run into some
- 36:00Speaker 5: health issues and things of that nature. But I really
- 36:04Speaker 5: like what we have coming back next year, and I
- 36:07Speaker 5: really like the tone and tenor of what they're saying
- 36:09Speaker 5: and how they're wanting to go into the summer. Certainly,
- 36:13Speaker 5: we've got to get a little time off unless some
- 36:14Speaker 5: bodies recover and that kind of thing. But I really
- 36:18Speaker 5: like where their head is right now. And as for us,
- 36:21Speaker 5: you just get back on the carousel. It doesn't stop.
- 36:24Speaker 5: I mean, we are, like I said, we're already in
- 36:26Speaker 5: the portal will be. We've got our bank with Sunday,
- 36:29Speaker 5: and then we go on our planning our staff planning
- 36:33Speaker 5: retreat for three or four days where we look at
- 36:35Speaker 5: everything that our entire calendar, change our training up if
- 36:41Speaker 5: we feel we need to, based on what we know
- 36:44Speaker 5: from a health perspective of our team. We look at
- 36:47Speaker 5: everything from apparel contracts to fundraising efforts, to what we're
- 36:51Speaker 5: doing with nil and on and on and on, and
- 36:55Speaker 5: we'll spend three or four days working from that, and
- 36:57Speaker 5: then we get on the road and we're gone through
- 37:00Speaker 5: close to the end of May, and then I'll get
- 37:02Speaker 5: two weeks of vacation and then back at it again
- 37:04Speaker 5: starting in June. So it doesn't slow down a whole lot.
- 37:08Speaker 5: But I'm looking forward to getting over to the beach here.
- 37:10Speaker 2: At the end of the month, the whole two weeks,
- 37:13Speaker 2: a whole two weeks.
- 37:14Speaker 5: I'll tell you what I get over there. I will
- 37:17Speaker 5: get over there by my happy you know what, so
- 37:21Speaker 5: and sit and sometimes not even leave the neighborhood for
- 37:25Speaker 5: two weeks. I cannot wait, cannot wait.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Well, it'll be well deserved, because I can tell you, coach,
- 37:31Speaker 3: I don't envy any college coach right now in this
- 37:34Speaker 3: in this world, the amount that you'll have to juggle
- 37:36Speaker 3: and talk about and uh and it just seems like
- 37:38Speaker 3: every year a little bit more. It takes a it
- 37:40Speaker 3: takes a special person. And certainly we we're happy and
- 37:44Speaker 3: proud to have you leading leading the gymnastics team. And
- 37:46Speaker 3: we had doctor Stephen Ethertch here on the show a
- 37:49Speaker 3: little bit earlier this morning, and and I just want
- 37:52Speaker 3: you to know he talks about how absolutely tough your
- 37:57Speaker 3: team is, about the stress that they put on their
- 37:59Speaker 3: body each and every day, and uh, we and we've
- 38:03Speaker 3: come to the conclusion that the gymnasts are probably the
- 38:06Speaker 3: toughest athletes out there.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Would you agree with that?
- 38:09Speaker 5: I would? You know. I gotta be careful how how
- 38:12Speaker 5: loud I say that sometimes because it, you know, some
- 38:14Speaker 5: people have doesn't land too well with. But but I'm uh,
- 38:17Speaker 5: I know what doctor Ethrudge and doctor Fury had to
- 38:20Speaker 5: do just to get us through the weekend. You know,
- 38:23Speaker 5: it took every bit of their uh engineering, if you will,
- 38:27Speaker 5: to make sure that that that these some of these
- 38:30Speaker 5: kids could get through it. But yeah, they're tough. They're
- 38:33Speaker 5: tough as nails. They're tough mentally there that I've never
- 38:37Speaker 5: been around. Uh you know another sport where you have
- 38:40Speaker 5: to block out so much uh in those in those
- 38:45Speaker 5: moments of it's it's a lot more. It's a lot more.
- 38:48Speaker 5: I tell this people. I may have said it to
- 38:50Speaker 5: you all before, it's a lot more to me, like
- 38:52Speaker 5: Sunday at the Masters than than from a mental standpoint,
- 38:56Speaker 5: You've got to be locked in and you can't. You
- 38:59Speaker 5: can't let inthing intrude on that mindset that you have.
- 39:03Speaker 5: And they're toughest nails, dude, They're way tougher than I am.
- 39:07Speaker 5: I can guarantee that.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think way tougher than I am as well.
- 39:11Speaker 3: So all right, coach, well, I know you've got a
- 39:14Speaker 3: lot of work to do and already focusing on next
- 39:17Speaker 3: season and maybe those two weeks of vacation, but like,
- 39:20Speaker 3: let's take one last look back and if you have to,
- 39:23Speaker 3: when you look back, when the dust settles and everything
- 39:25Speaker 3: a couple of years from now, ten years, twenty years,
- 39:27Speaker 3: whatever it is.
- 39:28Speaker 2: When you look back at.
- 39:29Speaker 3: This twenty twenty six team, how are you going to
- 39:32Speaker 3: think about them?
- 39:34Speaker 5: Well, right now, I would put them there. There's been
- 39:38Speaker 5: until this year, there's been two teams in my career
- 39:41Speaker 5: that I really look back on in all. It was
- 39:46Speaker 5: a two thousand and five team when I was still
- 39:48Speaker 5: at Georgia that was freshman heavy, that went through a
- 39:51Speaker 5: losing streak in the middle of season, barely qualified to nationals,
- 39:54Speaker 5: and then won the whole thing. And the way they
- 39:56Speaker 5: went about doing it. I learned a lot about culture,
- 39:59Speaker 5: and I learned a lot about what it can mean,
- 40:02Speaker 5: no matter if it's coming from freshmen or upperclassmen, and
- 40:06Speaker 5: brought those lessons. That team really taught me a lot.
- 40:09Speaker 5: The twenty twenty three team here that did not win
- 40:12Speaker 5: but got to the finals in the face of ridiculous
- 40:16Speaker 5: adversity from an injury standpoint. We had kids competing in
- 40:19Speaker 5: events that they never dreamed they'd be doing when they
- 40:21Speaker 5: were here at LSU, and they were doing it for
- 40:24Speaker 5: the right reasons, and they were honoring each other with
- 40:26Speaker 5: their actions, which is something we talk about a lot
- 40:29Speaker 5: in our program. And then this year's team, So two
- 40:32Speaker 5: of those three did not win championships, but the way
- 40:38Speaker 5: they conducted themselves and the way they competed and the
- 40:41Speaker 5: way they went after it with a level of tenacity
- 40:44Speaker 5: and just refusal to die will always stick with me.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Because there were a lot of things unknown going on,
- 40:52Speaker 5: you know, within our team from a you know, some
- 40:55Speaker 5: of it from a physical health standpoint that we had
- 40:59Speaker 5: to deal with that. You know, you don't put everything
- 41:01Speaker 5: out there in the public all the time, and you know,
- 41:05Speaker 5: I'm just proud of them. I'm just proud of the
- 41:07Speaker 5: way they conducted themselves. I'm proud of the way they
- 41:09Speaker 5: confronted issues when they needed to and held each other
- 41:12Speaker 5: accountable and did some really old fashioned good stuff that
- 41:18Speaker 5: you don't hear an awful lot anymore in today's generation,
- 41:21Speaker 5: where it's like, if I don't like it, I'm leaving.
- 41:24Speaker 5: These kids got into trenches together and if they had
- 41:27Speaker 5: to argue or fight, they did it, but they handled
- 41:30Speaker 5: it in a way that was very adult like, and
- 41:32Speaker 5: they were able to get through any issue that came
- 41:35Speaker 5: their way because they were willing to do it for
- 41:37Speaker 5: a bigger purpose. And I couldn't be more proud of
- 41:40Speaker 5: this group. I just couldn't.
- 41:41Speaker 3: Yeah, well, coach, it certainly came through. And that's I think,
- 41:45Speaker 3: I hope I speak for all LSU fans of saying
- 41:48Speaker 3: we were proud to watch it as well. So we
- 41:50Speaker 3: appreciate your time, coach, and congrats on a fantastic season
- 41:53Speaker 3: and a fantastic team over there. So coach, we appreciate
- 41:56Speaker 3: the time this morning.
- 41:57Speaker 5: All right, guys, thank you. I appreciate y'all having me on.
- 42:00Speaker 3: All right, there he is, coach Jay Clark. You're a
- 42:03Speaker 3: coach for the LSU gymnastics team national runner up. Bye,
- 42:07Speaker 3: less than a tenth and fantastic stuff from coach. As always,
- 42:13Speaker 3: we want to thank him every single week that he
- 42:15Speaker 3: has joined us this season. So hey, looking forward ahead
- 42:18Speaker 3: and hopefully gets that much needed and much deserved a
- 42:21Speaker 3: little bit of time off. So let's go to break. Well,

- 44:31Speaker 3: want to thank coach Jay Clark last segment. He's awesome, man,
- 44:35Speaker 3: he's great. Both both the Jays that both coaches, They're fantastic.
- 44:39Speaker 7: Yeah. Probably top two J's in the entire world.
- 44:44Speaker 3: I'm trying to think, I mean, for sure at the top.
- 44:47Speaker 3: I don't want. I gotta think of some other jas.
- 44:51Speaker 7: Before I think the top two.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Before I pinned in Janet Jay Lenno. No, I mean,
- 45:01Speaker 2: he's pretty pretty cool.
- 45:03Speaker 8: I guess he's kind of fallen off after he got
- 45:06Speaker 8: like beat by the mafia.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess.
- 45:08Speaker 7: So the hill that he tried to say he rolled
- 45:12Speaker 7: down kind of more of a sling.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't really, I'm not too familiar with that story.
- 45:20Speaker 8: Rumor has it that he got beat up by the mafia.
- 45:23Speaker 8: What about Jay z Okay I can get behind jay Z,
- 45:28Speaker 8: but like I still in my opinion, Jay Johnson and
- 45:32Speaker 8: J Clark are top two.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess I gotta agree with you. I just
- 45:38Speaker 3: looked up famous jay's and I'm not seeing a whole bunch.
- 45:41Speaker 3: No jay Z, Jay Leno, Jay Farrow, J Farrow, who's
- 45:50Speaker 3: a comedian.
- 45:51Speaker 8: Oh yeah, yeah, okay, he does impressions, Okay, yeah yeah.
- 45:58Speaker 2: J Johnson, J Clark top Jason top, jay Z third place.
- 46:04Speaker 7: Yeah, or we could do one A one B Jay
- 46:06Speaker 7: Johnson and J Clark and then Z.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Okay, they just hold the first and second places in
- 46:13Speaker 3: no particular order. Rights. Well, I'll tell you what, it's
