- 0:00Our number 2 Millery Condon, welcome back wherever listening
- 0:03in the state of our grateful that you are.
- 0:05We'll take you until 2:00 went to Vegas, Chris Andrews, he runs
- 0:08the sports book at the South Point Casino.
- 0:11We'll talk to Chris here coming up in about 25 minutes.
- 0:14Right now, let's get our buddy in here, Rob Doster field of 68.
- 0:18He joins us to lot talk a little college hoops.
- 0:20Hello Rob Trenton, Ken, how are you?
- 0:22Good to talk to you. What's going on, gentlemen?
- 0:26How we doing? Doing OK and looking forward to
- 0:28our conversation as we always do.
- 0:31Kansas Texas Tech last night. Terrific basketball game.
- 0:34Thought Texas Tech had it. One Darren Peterson had a couple
- 0:38of threes left to shoot and he made them both.
- 0:39And we saw the result with Kansas and with Peterson
- 0:43motivated to play and not listening to his agent or his
- 0:47parents who want to guard the asset.
- 0:49And I understand that point. But if Peterson is absolutely,
- 0:53100% committed, how far can this Jayhawks team go?
- 0:57Of course, not knowing the path that they'll have to take, how
- 0:59good can they be? They can win a national title.
- 1:03I've I've been, I've been on this bandwagon.
- 1:05I've been on this train since the start of the season, right?
- 1:07We we know how good Darren Peterson can be when he plays
- 1:11his best basketball, right? We've seen that he's the best
- 1:14player. He's the number one pick and he
- 1:16has a very real chance to be the best scorer that we see in
- 1:19college basketball. He's that explosive.
- 1:21They got another guy in Melbourne Council that can take
- 1:24over games and can win games and can be the best player on the
- 1:27floor on nights when you need him to be.
- 1:29We saw that against NC State, we saw that late against TCU.
- 1:32They have a top 10 defense in college basketball and they have
- 1:37a coach and Bill Self who is as good as a kind of game plan or a
- 1:42game tactician as you'll find. And it's won two national
- 1:45titles. And you give me that combination
- 1:47of three things and they can win it.
- 1:49Now, obviously the fact that that that Peterson is in and out
- 1:55of the lineup is, is a significant difference maker,
- 1:59right? I do wonder if kind of what we
- 2:05saw last night where Kansas was any game they weren't up by 22
- 2:11points or whatever it was and they were able to to to use him
- 2:15to make a comeback late that we'll see some more of that,
- 2:19right? You play 18 minutes in the first
- 2:21half against BYU, you're up by 20.
- 2:22You don't really need Peterson out there to win the game.
- 2:24So let's get him on the bench. I wonder if that played any role
- 2:27in kind of the way that all that stuff played out.
- 2:29But hey, I'm I'm in on them. I'm I'm all the way in on them
- 2:33and it's and and here's the biggest thing too, right?
- 2:35We saw them beat Iowa State. That game was at home.
- 2:37We saw them BBYU that game was at home.
- 2:39They went on the road last night on Texas second one and came
- 2:41back to do it. Well, while we're in the big
- 2:43well, let's get your thoughts on Iowa State.
- 2:46Had the two game losing streak, the aforementioned game against
- 2:48KU and a road loss at Cincinnati.
- 2:50Since then, it's not just winning, dominating performances
- 2:53out of Iowa State, crushing the bottom of the conference outside
- 2:56of UCF, but still winning by 30 points.
- 2:59I don't care who you're opponent in, as a conference, that's eye
- 3:02opening. Just how good is this Iowa State
- 3:04team when we look at upside? How high is it for the Cyclones?
- 3:08Well, I mean, look, we know what they're going to be defensively,
- 3:10right, because they have a scheme and they have a system.
- 3:12They've shown that that scheme in that system can work.
- 3:16We know how good their point guard is.
- 3:17We know what blah Manchenvich is.
- 3:19And we've seen kind of Joshua Jefferson make the league this
- 3:22year where he went from being a good player to a legitimate All
- 3:25American caliber player in the I mean, I think he's probably Big
- 3:2912 player of the year right now. I think it's either him or or
- 3:33AJ, and I'd be really shocked if he wasn't a first team All
- 3:36American when things are all said and done.
- 3:39The question to me is like, does that mean that this is a team
- 3:45that can go out and win a national championship?
- 3:47Are they final 4 caliber? And I think they could probably
- 3:49do both those things. If there was one concern that I
- 3:52did have, when you compare them to maybe the likes of Arizona
- 3:57and Michigan and that's the conversation that they're in, to
- 4:00be frank, like they are in that top 8 in the mix for a number
- 4:03one seed. But the one concern I would have
- 4:06is how many guys that do they have that can kind of go win a
- 4:09game for you when everything else gets mucked up, right?
- 4:13Like we know Kansas has a couple of them.
- 4:15We've seen Michigan have guys that can go out and win games
- 4:18one-on-one, right? We know how good a guy like
- 4:20Darren Peterson is and he can kind of do that on his own.
- 4:23That would kind of be my one quit.
- 4:24Like Kingston Fleming's has gone for 30 multiple times and one
- 4:28games in the second-half. Do the Cyclones have that kind
- 4:33of a weapon? Right.
- 4:35And I guess that'd probably be my only concern.
- 4:37And you know, if you keep getting this kind of shooting
- 4:40from I'm Sheila, which and you keep getting this kind of
- 4:42performance from Joshua Jefferson, I don't think that
- 4:44would be an issue. But that's kind of the one
- 4:46question that I do have that and look, it feels like I'm
- 4:50criticizing him. That's different than being in
- 4:53that national title favorite conversation with the Dukes, the
- 4:56Michigan's and the Arizona's versus being a national title
- 4:59threat with the lights of like the Yukons and the the the the
- 5:02next tier of teams. Well, one more in the Big 12.
- 5:07Let's get your take on Arizona. They're the unbeaten team so
- 5:10far. They got Oklahoma State and then
- 5:11Kansas, Texas Tech, BYU, Houston, Baylor, Kansas, Iowa
- 5:15State before finishing Colorado, point being the waters to get
- 5:18them a whole lot deeper here. I think they're up to the
- 5:21challenge. I don't think they're going to
- 5:23get through it unscathed. But is Arizona, in your mind the
- 5:26clear cut, clear cut, best team in the Big 12 at this point?
- 5:31In the Big 12, I think, yeah, they probably are.
- 5:33You know, I, I don't think that Matthias Crevas gets anywhere
- 5:37near enough credit for how good he is defensively.
- 5:40And kind of, you know, what he does is similar to what Ryan
- 5:44Kalprenner did the last couple of years for Creighton.
- 5:47And that he just, he's so good at being 7 foot 2 and 260 and
- 5:51walling up at the rim and making it so that nothing gets finished
- 5:54in and around the basket. And when you combine that with
- 5:56the fact that Braden Buries is taking the I mean, he's taking a
- 6:00lead in the last next week, He looks like there's an argument
- 6:02you can make that since the turn of the calendar, he's been the
- 6:06best freshman on that Arizona roster.
- 6:08And cooped has been a top ten pick in an All American so far
- 6:11this season. And they got a closer.
- 6:14You know, Jaden Bradley is a guy that will take over games late
- 6:17and has done it multiple times this season.
- 6:19There's the level of leadership there.
- 6:21And you know, the biggest thing and I, you know, I hear people
- 6:25talking about how they don't shoot enough threes, they don't
- 6:28get enough scoring from beyond the yard.
- 6:29You know, this is the, this is modern basketball.
- 6:32You got to be able to shoot well.
- 6:33The thing about Arizona is 1, a lot of the twos that they get
- 6:37are a result of getting out in transition and running right.
- 6:40Like they're, they played at really, really fast-paced.
- 6:42They're forced turnovers and they're able to get stops.
- 6:46So they're able to get out and transition and run.
- 6:49And the other part of it is one, their rebound, like when if they
- 6:52miss a shot, they're getting back like 39 and 40% of them or
- 6:56something like that. And beyond that, what they're
- 6:58able to create is they run. It's the same offense that Mark
- 7:03Few was running forever at New Zagger, right?
- 7:06Where it's kind of, you get it out in transition, you look for
- 7:08a quick seal. Then you start running the ball
- 7:10screen constituency where you either come off the the ball
- 7:14screen and get a drive to the basket.
- 7:15You try to get your big guy ducking in the ceiling at the
- 7:17rim. Or then if that doesn't work,
- 7:19you rotate it to the opposite side of the floor and you do the
- 7:21same thing all over again, right?
- 7:23It's not complicated. But what they do really, really,
- 7:25really well is create shots kind of at the rim, right, and create
- 7:29opportunities where you can catch it, turn, lay it in with
- 7:31guys that are very good at catching, turning and laying the
- 7:33ball in. So yeah, they're not shooting a
- 7:36lot of threes, but the reason why their office is so efficient
- 7:39on twos is because they're getting twos that are very, very
- 7:42easy to make for them. Rob, from the Big 12 to the Big
- 7:4610 and feels like we have some heavyweights at the top.
- 7:49It's felt that way plenty of times, yet we're talking about
- 7:521/4 a century since the last time the Big 10 won a national
- 7:55championship. Does that change this season?
- 8:00Yeah, I mean, I think this is going to be the best chance they
- 8:02have to do it, right. Like, there's just so many good
- 8:04teams there. You know, I'm still on the
- 8:08Nebraska and the Michigan State bandwagon as being good enough
- 8:11to win a championship, right? I don't think that a team that
- 8:14is as good defensively as Michigan State is with a point
- 8:17guard like Jeremy Fears, I'm never going to count out a town
- 8:19as a team. We got those things.
- 8:20And with Purdue like it's a guards game in March and Purdue
- 8:26probably leads a little bit help, a little bit of help more
- 8:28than some of these other teams at the top the league.
- 8:30But you give me Braden Smith and you give me the the veteran from
- 8:33that roster and you give me Matt Painter and and I'm not betting
- 8:36against them to pull it off. But then you like, so you got
- 8:39those three teams right. But then you look at the top and
- 8:42there has not been a better team in college basketball than
- 8:45Illinois. In the last 6.
- 8:47Weeks they they've been unbelievable since the loss of
- 8:50Nebraska, they've been unbelievable.
- 8:51And you know, they've they're shifting Keaton Waggler into
- 8:55more of a point guard role. And frankly, that started before
- 8:58the injury to Kai Boswell. A lot of people are citing that
- 9:01as the change, but Keaton Waggler has been in that point
- 9:04guard role since before Boswell got hurt.
- 9:07And so his kind of emergence of the superstar has made them.
- 9:12They are so good at getting the open, like getting the best
- 9:17shot, not just getting a good shot, getting the best shot
- 9:19because they have a bunch of guys that understand how to play
- 9:22and understand how to move the ball and understand how to space
- 9:25the floor. And everybody on their team can
- 9:27shoot. And what makes them so dangerous
- 9:29is if you look at their frontline, you know, they have
- 9:32the size and the strength and the physicality to match up with
- 9:36the likes of Arizona and the likes of Michigan and the likes
- 9:40of Florida and the big, strong, burly frontline that have kind
- 9:43of taken over college basketball, right?
- 9:46You see the NBA kind of going to a space pace and space era.
- 9:49Well, now if you look at Illinois or you look at college
- 9:51basketball, it's be big, these physical force turnovers and win
- 9:55the battle on the glass. And Illinois can do all that.
- 9:57And oh, by the way, they also happen to shoot 36% from three.
- 10:01They take more than 50% of their threes from beyond New York.
- 10:03And they do it with guys. Tommy Ibisich is what, 7 foot
- 10:07£250, right? Davi Mirkovich is 69250.
- 10:12They got the other Ibisich who's 7 1250 and can block shots
- 10:15right. Look, they got they have
- 10:17everything that you need up front to match up with the size
- 10:19of the biggest front lines and all those guys can shoot and oh,
- 10:23by the way, they have a six foot six decision maker who looks
- 10:26like the second coming of Tyrese Halliburton.
- 10:29Man, like that team. That team is a problem.
- 10:31No, you know, we haven't even talked about the top of the big
- 10:3310 yet is Michigan the number one team on Ken Palm and what I
- 10:36think is the best team in college basketball.
- 10:37So this is the best chance that the big 10 has had to kind of
- 10:41break that title drought. I I don't even, I don't even
- 10:45know when. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 10:47When watching Michigan just roll through the Las Vegas tournament
- 10:52the way that they did, beating good teams, just certainly,
- 10:55certainly eye opening. All right, let's let's bounce
- 10:57around. What about Duke?
- 11:00Their ceiling is what? National championship, I think
- 11:05that they are as much as anyone, I think that they are flying
- 11:09under the radar at this point. You know, it's weird.
- 11:12It's weird in college hoops this year because I think that there
- 11:15are like 9 or 10 teams that can all win the championship.
- 11:20But once you get past those 9 or 10 teams, I think there's a
- 11:22pretty big like, I don't see very many teams that are in that
- 11:26like 15 to 30 range that I think can string enough together to
- 11:31get to a final four, if that makes sense, right?
- 11:34I would. I think we are much more likely
- 11:37to see a scenario where we once again have like 8 of the top 10
- 11:42seeds in the Elite 8 then we are to see had this be a year where
- 11:47you get like a eight seed, 10 seed, an 11 seed into the into
- 11:54the final weekend. So I'm, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm in
- 11:59on those top teams, but. Is Florida one of them?
- 12:04I would have Florida and it's one of those teams, yes, I
- 12:06would. And it'll be interesting to see
- 12:08where they end up getting seeded because they lost some games
- 12:10early on. But they are looked.
- 12:13The era of college basketball that we're in is 1 where you
- 12:17have size and physicality and athleticism.
- 12:21And you use that size, physicality and athleticism to
- 12:23force turnovers and get out and transition and to get on the
- 12:26glass and get out and transition and then just have enough.
- 12:30And then a half court on offense where you can get more or less a
- 12:33good shot every possession. And then use that size and that
- 12:37athleticism to go and get 40% of the ones that you miss, right?
- 12:41You know, The thing is, sometimes the best shot you can
- 12:43get is a missed shot or the best offense you can have is a missed
- 12:46shot. That's what a lot of these teams
- 12:47are doing right now. That's kind of what Michigan is
- 12:49doing, right? Like the majority of what they
- 12:51do is Gordon transition and scoring on the offensive glass.
- 12:56That's why let's say Florida is the perfect example, right?
- 12:59So you look at what happened against Auburn.
- 13:01They dug themselves an 18 point hole against Auburn.
- 13:04They didn't get an offensive rebound in the 1st 13 minutes.
- 13:06They didn't get out transition at all in the 1st 20 minutes
- 13:10because Keyshawn Hall went absolutely nuts and they had to
- 13:12take the ball out of the net and take it out of balance on every
- 13:15single offense possession. That's why they got down by 18.
- 13:18They beat the brakes off of Alabama the next night because
- 13:22they were able to get to the offensive glass whenever they
- 13:24wanted and they were able to get stops early on to allow them to
- 13:27get out and transition. And it's just kind of one of
- 13:29those things where it's like once that snowball starts
- 13:32rolling downhill, it's going to get bigger and get bigger and
- 13:34get bigger and pick up steam. That's why you see Michigan
- 13:37blowing everybody. Like when you can hang with them
- 13:40and keep them from getting to the offensive glass and keep
- 13:42them from getting out in transition, you can beat those
- 13:44teams. That's part of why when I look
- 13:46at Illinois, like they can do all of the stuff that you need
- 13:50to be able to do to beat the best and most physical teams in
- 13:53college basketball. And oh, by the way, they got a
- 13:56top five pick runner things. And oh, by the way, they got all
- 13:58and they can do all the other stuff as well.
- 14:00So I'm that's why I think Illinois is a very, very real
- 14:03threat to make a lot of noise in March.
- 14:06Duster one final thing for me I want to ask you about two one
- 14:09loss teams 1 the Zags Gonzaga watch them against Saint Mary's
- 14:13on Saturday night and what has become the best rivalry on the
- 14:16West coach and what a game that was Braden Huff he's they set
- 14:20out four to 8 weeks with that dislocated kneecap Boy.
- 14:23It feels like that is a stretch even for a guy to come back with
- 14:26that. Do they need him to make a deep
- 14:28run And the other one last team Saint Louis Josh shirts doing an
- 14:31outstanding job there and it's not just the offense that we
- 14:33knew about when he was at Indiana State.
- 14:35They're playing some defense this year.
- 14:36The Billikens. Yeah, You know, I just I went on
- 14:40that whole spiel about how I don't think that there are teams
- 14:42from outside that like the top 10 or 12 that can make the run.
- 14:45If there's one that I think's got a chance to do it, I think
- 14:47it's Saint Louis because of everything that you just
- 14:49mentioned. Like they got shooters that, you
- 14:51know, how difficult they are to guard with Ravi Abdullah in
- 14:53there. And there's length and
- 14:55athleticism on the perimeter that will cause some problems
- 14:58against teams. It's it's crazy, man.
- 15:00They I don't think I've ever seen this before.
- 15:02They lead the nation in effective field goal percentage
- 15:05on offense and on defense, which is not like that's basically I
- 15:10don't think that that's happened in the history of basketball.
- 15:12Like the other ones that were top 3 was like Duke last year.
- 15:16And then I want to say the the one of the Kentucky teams that
- 15:20won a national or one of the Gonzaga teams that made it to a
- 15:22national championship game. So that's what Saint Louis is
- 15:24doing and what that kind of predicts.
- 15:27So I think that they're a very real threat.
- 15:29But with Gonzaga, I, I think they're upsided.
- 15:33They can, they can hang with anybody because they're
- 15:35veterans, because Granby gives really, really good.
- 15:38And then because they have enough different weapons on
- 15:42their perimeter that they can, they can string together enough
- 15:46to get get a win right. And I think that they can beat
- 15:50anybody without Brayden Huff. I think it's very hard to
- 15:53imagine them winning six games in a row where four of those
- 15:57games are going to be against top 15, top 20 caliber opponents
- 16:01without Brayden Huff. Does that make sense?
- 16:02Like they can just one. I don't know if they can get
- 16:04four or five of those without him.
- 16:06Field is 68. Rob Doster joins us.
- 16:08Rob, thanks as always for jumping on.
- 16:10Hopefully can find some time maybe before conference
- 16:12tournament time as I know you guys are peaking right after
- 16:16that. Good.
- 16:16Stuff. How about Monday the 16th?
- 16:18The perfect. I'm coming.
- 16:20I'm coming to Iowa. What for?
- 16:23What? We're going to the Houston, Iowa
- 16:26State game on Monday the 16th. Then I'm getting in the car and
- 16:30I'm driving 7 hours the next morning to go to Michigan at
- 16:33Purdue, the next day in West Lafayette.
- 16:35Because apparently there's not a single flight in the entire
- 16:39state of Iowa that'll take me from Iowa to Indianapolis
- 16:43direct. We got to have a conversation
- 16:45with some of these airports. We got to talk to Des Moines.
- 16:47We got to talk to Ames. We got to talk to some of these
- 16:49airports about getting direct flights from somewhere in the
- 16:52state to Indianapolis. That's my only complaint right
- 16:55now. Iowa.
- 16:56That's my 1 issue with you guys. I like everything else.
- 16:58I love the basketball, love the hoops, especially love the radio
- 17:01host. Got to get some direct flights
- 17:03to Indianapolis. Can we, can we work on this guy?
- 17:05I said the same thing a couple of times for Big 10 championship
- 17:07games. Yeah, it is not going through
- 17:09Chicago. You're going through Chicago.
- 17:10That is the only way. But hey, we're getting a couple
- 17:12of new wings out there at our airport here at DSM.
- 17:15So potentially down the road, but not going to happen quick
- 17:17enough for you Doster. Just give me one.
- 17:20One a day. That's all we need.
- 17:21One flight a day from Des Moines to Indianapolis.
- 17:24All any. Good stuff, buddy.
- 17:25Thanks for jumping on Rob. Appreciate it.
- 17:27Good to talk to you. Thanks.
- 17:29Fellas. Yep, thank you.
- 17:30That's cool. Yes, you can spend Monday at
- 17:32Hilton Coliseum and then in the car off to see a little Purdue
- 17:35action. Yeah, we'll have to see if you.
- 17:37Should try and get him in the studio.
- 17:38Try and get him. I wouldn't depend on what once
- 17:40the once they get here, etcetera.
- 17:43George and I was just traded again.
- 17:46He was he's he's out of Utah. He's headed to Memphis.
- 17:48Memphis traded John Jackson, 7 player trade.
- 17:52Wow. Utah sends a Walter Clayton
- 17:54junior, Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks and George Nyang to
- 17:59Memphis. So from Utah, from Salt Lake to
- 18:02Memphis. Upgrade.
- 18:04City wise, I hated Memphis. Not your town.
- 18:09No, it wasn't Beale Street. You know what?
- 18:11I guess maybe I was expecting New Orleans.
- 18:14OK. It's not that, no.
- 18:17No, no, no, no, no. It was a far cry.
- 18:19It was OK wasn't great. Anyways, Miller and Condon,
- 18:22we'll be joined by Chris Andrews when we come back.
- 18:24But let's send you into the break with some homework.
- 18:27And that homework is to head to KX and o.com right now.
- 18:30Once you get there, a pop up box will appear.
- 18:32Type the keyword pay. Pay at KX and o.com.
- 18:35Your chance to win $1000 pay at KX and o.com.
- 18:39Chris Andrews is next. Miller and Condon talking
- 18:42sports. I'm glad you with us on the Iowa
- 18:44Sports Radio Network. I'm Eric Condon.
- 18:47Welcome back. Approaching 1:30, We'll take you
- 18:51until just before 2. Off the bench.
- 18:53At that time, Sean Roberts, Lucas strained 2 until 5.
- 18:56Overtime Iowa, 5 until 6. Off we go to Las Vegas.
- 19:01Southern end of the Strip. South Point is where you'll find
- 19:05our next guest, Chris Andrews. Been there for a long time, A
- 19:09multi time authors. Is your latest book out yet?
- 19:13Chris Prairie with this Kendall, of course you just talked to
- 19:15Trent. Good to speak with you.
- 19:16Always appreciate the time is your latest book at the
- 19:19publisher. Where's it at, Chris?
- 19:22To the publisher right now, you got a few more things to finish
- 19:25up before we send it out. But yeah, it should be out, you
- 19:28know, hopefully shortly. Good stuff.
- 19:30We got it all finished. We got nothing going on this
- 19:32week and take some time. And so once once the
- 19:36championships are over, Chris, kind of take us, you know, about
- 19:40behind the scenes, if you will. You know that it's going to be
- 19:42Seattle, you know it's going to be New England.
- 19:44How can you re regurgitate props from the previous years?
- 19:50Just change the names of the teams.
- 19:52How much effort goes into the 2000 or Super Bowl 60 props once
- 19:58once we get the two Super Bowl teams identified?
- 20:02Well, we kind of have a template that we use with and obviously
- 20:06there's going to be some changes every year because different
- 20:08teams just have different priorities.
- 20:11Let's say last year we had Philadelphia, you know, Sake 1,
- 20:14Barclay is going to be a big key to anything they do not.
- 20:18Seattle this year is a good running game, but nobody like a
- 20:20Saquon Barkley. You know, I would say the same
- 20:24for New England. Then you get different defensive
- 20:27players, You know, some have a lot of stacks, some don't.
- 20:31Some just play really solid defense.
- 20:32They intercept balls, things like that.
- 20:35So there's always adjustments to be made.
- 20:39But we have a very basic template, and I mean, we stray
- 20:43off it certainly, but not not that much.
- 20:46You guys at the South Point, you're certainly feel more old
- 20:50school than other places. And Ken and I, it's one of our
- 20:53favorite places to go each and every time we're out there in
- 20:55Las Vegas. The way that you guys do things
- 20:57for the sports book for me, the horse book for Ken, he
- 21:00absolutely loves it and talks about it every single time.
- 21:03You know, with that, you've seen so many changes in your ears out
- 21:05there. The decades that you've been
- 21:07doing what you do as a bookmaker, what has been the
- 21:10biggest change that you have seen, the biggest change here
- 21:13recently that has changed the way that you guys do things back
- 21:16behind the cage? Well, you know, there's not that
- 21:20much that we do differently now than I did.
- 21:24You know, when I started working for Michael, going, my first job
- 21:27with him was in 1980. Since then I moved around, had a
- 21:30couple different stints before I came back here.
- 21:33So for us, we do things very similar.
- 21:37Now, the other things that I've seen across the spectrum of this
- 21:40business is people charging for parties, charging for seats,
- 21:44gouging the customers as far as your food and drink prices, that
- 21:49we take the exact opposite approach.
- 21:53And I got texted by somebody yesterday, he told me that as
- 21:57far as he can tell, we're the only one with a free party.
- 22:00How about that in this town? And we'll have about 2500 people
- 22:04in the one in one room that's besides the other room, But and
- 22:08our biggest one, about 2500 people.
- 22:10And, you know, I think I've sent out the what the menu looks
- 22:14like, you know, things like, you know, reasonable prices like
- 22:17dollar 50 for a hot dog and, you know, dollar 50 or $2.00 for a
- 22:22slice of pizza. I can't remember them all
- 22:23offhand, tell you the truth. But everything is very
- 22:26reasonable. That's just the way we do things
- 22:27here at the South Point. And I know I've heard a lot of
- 22:30people talking about Las Vegas. I was Vegas on the downturn and
- 22:36things like that. And, and it's a little overblown
- 22:40to be honest with you. But there is a little bit of
- 22:42truth to it too. And I think when you see the
- 22:44reason why it's, you know, Vegas was always a great place for
- 22:49that middle America guy to come. And you know, you're going to
- 22:52spend a couple $1000, but you get to see a good show, you get
- 22:55to eat some good restaurants, you get a little tingle gambling
- 22:58at the tables and all that. And that largely has been
- 23:02forgotten. So like the gaming numbers are
- 23:04really strong. But I think a lot of that has to
- 23:06do with the top end of the market.
- 23:08Those guys are still spending a lot of money in gaming now.
- 23:12Room rates are down, you know, restaurant covers are down, that
- 23:15kind of thing that that's what we're seeing a difference.
- 23:17It's just not the same Las Vegas really.
- 23:19There was even, you know, I'd say 5 to 8 years ago.
- 23:23Chris, I want to ask you about prediction markets.
- 23:25I, I quite honestly don't understand how they're legal
- 23:28exchange wagering came to New Jersey, but it was horses only
- 23:32back, I don't know, 15 years ago really never caught on, didn't
- 23:35expand outside the footprint. Now you're going to be able to
- 23:38wager on what the broadcasters say in the Super Bowl.
- 23:41I don't understand how this is not more regulated and how
- 23:45seemingly we've just opened up to the wild, Wild West.
- 23:49Are these going to be around in a year, do you think?
- 23:51Are this shelf life on this limited, Chris?
- 23:53Well, how do you, where do you feel come in on on these
- 23:56prediction markets? Well, I think it it the least
- 23:59it's going to evolve and the thing that people have to
- 24:02understand, like I I saw with the one guy and I can't remember
- 24:05who it was. Would Maduro get arrested and
- 24:08brought to America? Right.
- 24:09It's supposedly one 240,000. Where'd that 240 come from?
- 24:16You know, it's the thing, you know, in the gambling business,
- 24:20it's not like, listen, you invest in the stock market that
- 24:23you bought Apple, you buy Google, you buy whoever.
- 24:25It goes up and up and up. Let's say you bought it at,
- 24:28let's just throw out a number. You bought it at $100 and now
- 24:31it's 200. Well, nobody lost 200 for you to
- 24:33make that $100. You know, the business got
- 24:36better and they grew and etcetera, etcetera.
- 24:39Betting is different. If you bet, you know, you bet on
- 24:44the Islanders and I've bet on the Penguins, it's going to be a
- 24:480 sum. If you lost 200 bucks and I won
- 24:51200 bucks, it comes to 0. And the same with these, you
- 24:55know, markets, you know, the money has to come from
- 24:58somewhere. And I've got to be quite honest
- 25:00with you and I've talked to, you know, guys who are in the know,
- 25:03guys like Roxy Roxboro and things.
- 25:05And yeah, he's kind of scratching his head too.
- 25:07He's not sure exactly where. There's slowly people on the
- 25:11other side of it. Obviously there have to be
- 25:13because like I said, it is a 0 sum game in this racket.
- 25:17But I don't know where it all comes from and I think there
- 25:21will be a shake out. How exactly it's going to go, I
- 25:26don't know. I'm, I'm sort of towards the end
- 25:29of my career. I'm going to be 70 a couple
- 25:31months and I'm, I'm glad I'm not looking at this stuff that
- 25:35seriously because I'm not sure where it's going to go and I'm
- 25:38not sure it's a good thing for the industry either.
- 25:40You have such a wide range of props that are available at the
- 25:43South Point that you guys put up, but you can bet seemingly
- 25:46anything on this game anymore. And what's going to actually
- 25:49happen inside the game? I want to go back, though, to
- 25:52Super Bowl 20. It was my one of my earliest
- 25:55football memories. My Bears for the only time in my
- 25:57lifetime, win a Super Bowl as they get it done in Super Bowl
- 26:0020. But was that the launch of Super
- 26:03Bowl props in a way, the refrigerator getting the
- 26:06touchdown in that one. And I think I've heard a wide
- 26:09range of stories. I heard that Caesars had it at
- 26:11like 50 to one. Other people say it was 20 to
- 26:14one for him to score a touchdown in that game.
- 26:16Take us back to 1986 Super Bowl 20 and what you remember about
- 26:22maybe prop markets exploding to where we are today.
- 26:26Well, let me just tell you, I have a better insight than
- 26:29probably 99% of the world. That was my cousin that ran
- 26:33Caesar's Palace sports book, so I know it quite well.
- 26:37Esposito's your cousin. No art man terrace.
- 26:40Art man terrace. OK, Yep.
- 26:43By the way, I don't know if I'll get any money for this.
- 26:44Probably not. I'm going to plug this new book,
- 26:47this house called the Bookie Art Man Terrace.
- 26:50Yeah. So anybody listening?
- 26:51And he goes through that story pretty good.
- 26:54They did open it 20 to 1. And, you know, I remember when
- 26:57they told me about it. And Trent, there's going to be a
- 27:00story in my new book that's coming up that that Super Bowl
- 27:03was one of the biggest scores of my life.
- 27:06I love the Bears from early on in the season.
- 27:09And I remember my telling my cousin, I said, Mike Ditka is
- 27:13going to. I don't know.
- 27:14I'm a lot. I'm probably not allowed to
- 27:15swear on your show. Mike Ditka is going to stick it
- 27:19to Las Vegas. He's going to have Perry score
- 27:22that touch on just to stick it that you guys, you know,
- 27:25Caesar's plat ballast, blah, blah, blah.
- 27:27So I'm not putting it up because he's going to score.
- 27:30He's going to score. And of course they don't listen
- 27:34to me, but but he'll go through in the story.
- 27:38Now he comes in, they lost, you know, and you know, this is
- 27:411986. So it's a lot of money lost,
- 27:43like about quarter of a million, I think a little more than that.
- 27:46And he comes in the next morning and he thinks, oh, my God.
- 27:48And then he gets a call. The president of Caesar's Palace
- 27:51wants to talk to him. He says, well, I guess I might
- 27:54as well be boxing out my stuff because I ain't going to be here
- 27:57within the next half hour or so. Instead it was the exact
- 28:00opposite. His boss called him and said
- 28:03that was the best thing you've ever done.
- 28:05We've got so much I want to cut free publicity did cost him like
- 28:091/4 of a million, but it did. But he got so much publicity out
- 28:13of that thing that he, he, you know, his bosses and Caesar's.
- 28:16But from 250,000 when we got to Saint Caesar's Palace back in
- 28:191986, you know, so and they got a ton of publicity from it.
- 28:25And that that was that was really was the start of the
- 28:28process. And I always kid my cousin, half
- 28:31the time I want to strangle him, the other time I want to kiss
- 28:33his feet. But what he's done for this
- 28:35industry, because it is a lot of work, we put out all the props,
- 28:39but that's that's the first prop.
- 28:41That's the first one that, you know, thought he thought outside
- 28:44the box. Yeah.
- 28:45And I'm in Chucky Esposito. And I guess Richie Bachelori
- 28:48might have been part of it. And I think maybe Vinny Mayola
- 28:51might have been in there, too. But, you know, those guys all
- 28:53put it together. And, you know, Jimmy Matrini,
- 28:57that's another name I want to make.
- 28:58Oh, Italian. Just say a lot of vowels on.
- 29:01The end of names. We got one Greek thrown in
- 29:03there. There you go, but.
- 29:06But anyway, that was the start of it.
- 29:07But it's it's been fantastic ever since then.
- 29:10But there's times when it's not automatic that you win on these
- 29:14props. Trust me when I tell you that it
- 29:15takes a lot of work. Good stuff.
- 29:17Chris, my last thing for you kind of A2 parter, let Trent
- 29:20finish up as you go back to August, what team maybe did you
- 29:24misread the most when it comes to the NFL and who will South
- 29:27point? How do you see this game?
- 29:29Do you think you'll need Seattle once the kickoff gets here?
- 29:33Back to August and then Fast forward to Sunday.
- 29:37Well, let's start with the first part of your question and
- 29:39probably the team that I misread and probably, you know, I think
- 29:44probably 90% of the market being honest with the same thing as
- 29:47Buffalo Bills. We had them penciled in as the
- 29:50number one seed. You know, we thought that, I
- 29:53mean you looked at your schedule at a very easy schedule and we
- 29:56didn't see much competition coming out of their vision.
- 30:00So we had them kind of penciled in as being the top, the top
- 30:04team and in the AFC certainly, and probably even in the entire
- 30:08league. So we had them miscalculated.
- 30:11Now, as far as who are going to need this game, you know, I
- 30:16honestly don't know. So far it's been Seattle.
- 30:19But you know, in my book that's coming out, I talk about the one
- 30:22Super Bowl with Philadelphia and New England, and that was the
- 30:26Nick Foles game. You know, up until game day, we
- 30:30had nothing but New England money, nothing.
- 30:32But. And then that last day, it
- 30:34completely turned around. It was all on Philadelphia.
- 30:37So I had, there was a lot of maneuver on my part.
- 30:40Not the, you know, you'll hopefully you'll read in the
- 30:42book when it comes out, but you never know.
- 30:45But as of now, they're going to kick off.
- 30:46Now, I would need New England pretty good.
- 30:49But there's still a long, long way to go.
- 30:51And I've seen these things turn around quite dramatically.
- 30:55That kind of has that feeling. It's shaping up.
- 30:56It's going to be maybe a pros versus Joe's type of game with
- 30:59the sharps jumping on with New England and everybody else going
- 31:02to be on Seattle. Well, with that, Chris, you know
- 31:05my affinity for betting on college basketball and just pick
- 31:08your brain on that. What you guys are seeing in the
- 31:09futures market feels maybe top heavy this year, Only a handful
- 31:14of teams that can win it all. What are you guys seeing as it
- 31:16pertains to futures in college basketball?
- 31:19Well, you know, the same every year.
- 31:21You know, you got to get bet on most of the, how would I say the
- 31:26usual suspects. So we got a lot of money on
- 31:29Duke. That's the money on Yukon,
- 31:33Arizona. I have money on them.
- 31:35But I mean, I'm not in real bad shape with, with Arizona.
- 31:39Michigan, I think a lot of guys kind of figured Michigan was
- 31:42going to be very good right from the start.
- 31:44And once again, they're kind of like Arizona.
- 31:46I got money on them, but I'm I'm not in bad shape with any of
- 31:49them. You know, again, we've got a
- 31:50long, long way to go. But right now I'm looking
- 31:54probably Duke is my one team that I'm a little balling on.
- 31:57Florida a little bit too. I'm not quite that worried about
- 31:59them, you know, Illinois, another one, but you know, only
- 32:03one of them is going to win. All the rest of them is going to
- 32:07lose, you know, so I got a guy. I'm in bad shape with this.
- 32:11I'm in bad shape with that. You know, talk to me once we get
- 32:12that in front of me, you know, you know, we'll try to that's,
- 32:16you know, the art and the science of bookmaking that
- 32:19balances it out as well as you can.
- 32:21But there's some really good teams out there and there's
- 32:23always somebody that comes out of nowhere.
- 32:25Not last year, nobody did, but this year though, I have a
- 32:28feeling somebody will come out of nowhere.
- 32:29Who that is I have no idea, but there's some good teams out
- 32:32there. I think it is pretty well
- 32:33balanced because of NIO and that's what.
- 32:36They aren't in the science of bookmaking.
- 32:37You've done it very well, Chris Andrews, for a very long time.
- 32:40Good stuff. Enjoy the week, Chris.
- 32:42Appreciate you coming on. I love our conversations when we
- 32:44have the opportunity to run you down.
- 32:46Thank you, Chris Andrews. Thanks guys.
- 32:49Thanks for having me on. It's a pleasure.
- 32:50Yeah, good to talk to you. Chris Andrews from the South
- 32:53Point really is a gem. It really is, truly.
- 32:55It's a great locals play. I saw pictures of them.
- 32:58I don't know what. I must click on something.
- 33:00They're mobbed on the weekends. Yes, absolutely.
- 33:02Absolutely mobbed when Vegas and when the strippers.
- 33:06Fremont Street's doing very well.
- 33:07South Point is doing incredibly well.
- 33:09The Strip's seemingly down a little.
- 33:10Bit well, and I just saw a report from December that on the
- 33:14Strip, both in terms of I think it was hotel and gaming revenue
- 33:18was down to combine like 9% downtown up 11 S point doing
- 33:25incredibly well. And what do these places do?
- 33:27And it certainly caters to you and I.
- 33:31We're not going clubbing anymore.
- 33:32No, we're not flying in a private.
- 33:33Jet Nope, we're not doing that. We're nickel and dimers.
- 33:36We have a good time. We know what we like and these
- 33:38places still cater to us. These still cater to the guys
- 33:43and go out there, throw a couple bucks out there, have some fun,
- 33:46but we're not going out there. We're not looking for a $800
- 33:49dinner. What we're looking for, we'll
- 33:52have a good dinner. There's plenty of places to do
- 33:54that. We'll do that.
- 33:55We're not going to bet thousands of dollars on a game.
- 33:58I'm not going to go to the craps table and I'm not playing $6000
- 34:01out there. No, it might be $150.00 that is
- 34:04out there at one time. We are the nickel and dimer, and
- 34:07I'm going to guess for a majority of our audience here
- 34:09that way. These are the places you want to
- 34:11go South Point circa Golden Gate.
- 34:14These are the kind of places that work, I think, for most of
- 34:18our listeners here across the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:20And Chris is 100% right, a lot of properties they charge you
- 34:24now to get a seat and to watch the Super Bowl, including Circa,
- 34:28not at South Point and South Point.
- 34:30We'll be absolutely packed this weekend, good for Chris Andrews.
- 34:34Look forward to reading his his latest book once it comes up.
- 34:38One of my favorite things on the way to Vegas is reading and have
- 34:40one of Chris's books and fire that and really gets the juices
- 34:44flowing out on our way to Vegas that we need to get to.
- 34:47We got to get there at least a couple times before you hang it
- 34:49up. I'm all for it.
- 34:50Miller and Condon. We'll be back.
- 34:52Transplays of the day. Circus sports sponsor those
- 34:54Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:57I'm Miller. Condon.
- 34:58Welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network. 10
- 35:01minutes before 2, top of the hour.
- 35:04Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts take you in till 5:00.
- 35:08Well, it's not the best slate of college hoops tonight by a long
- 35:11ways. Drake does play tonight.
- 35:13That's an ESPN Plus affair against Bradley and a clock tip.
- 35:16The Bulldogs are a 9 1/2 point Rd. dog in that one.
- 35:21What else is on your agenda tonight?
- 35:24Are you playing anything? I am.
- 35:26I got 5 plays that I was able to pull out of this heap of kind
- 35:30of. Ugly.
- 35:30It really is. It's been a bad week.
- 35:33Well, Texas Tech cancers. Maybe here's something for you.
- 35:36Are your Jets playing tonight? No, they're off till tomorrow.
- 35:39You want to get a look at Saint Louis?
- 35:41They're on the road tonight on CBS Sports Network, 8:00 TIFF
- 35:44out at Davidson. It'll be a 9:00 tip for them out
- 35:47there. Davidson's OK.
- 35:48They're 13 and 8, so I know you haven't seen much of the bill of
- 35:51kids This will be an opportunity for.
- 35:54You don't have to do it on ESPN Plus or anything like that.
- 35:56Take a look at them. Yeah, plus we'll have the Drake
- 35:58game on this. I'm going to watch some of it.
- 36:00Yeah, I will, because I've not. And I'm with you.
- 36:02When especially, I mean, you've been touting them and then
- 36:04Doster came on and he said the same thing about them.
- 36:08Yeah. Early on tonight, we get
- 36:10undefeated Miami of Ohio on the road to Buffalo.
- 36:14They've been doing it by the skin of their teeth for the
- 36:16last, what, 2 1/2 weeks basically now seemingly every
- 36:20single game they're either down or come roaring back.
- 36:22If you look at these, the margin of victory before Northern
- 36:24Illinois over the weekend, bunch of close games and I think
- 36:27another one tonight. That's one of my 5 plays for
- 36:29tonight. Buffalo getting the five.
- 36:31Bulls. At home against Miami, Ohio
- 36:34feels like a little match in here on a Tuesday night, doesn't
- 36:36it? It's like we're in November.
- 36:38Four other plays for you, a little more teams that maybe at
- 36:42least you've heard of. All right, let's go next to the
- 36:45Big East. Savers bad.
- 36:47I think UConn puts it to him. I'll lay the big.
- 36:49Really. Bad.
- 36:50Yeah, 17 is the number. I'm going to lay it with UConn.
- 36:53I think this is a dominating performance out of them.
- 36:56Something smells here. Texas improving, still not very
- 36:59good. A lot of points with South
- 37:01Carolina, who seems to hang around in a lot of games.
- 37:03Will grab the Gamecocks. Getting 13 1/2 down in Austin.
- 37:07You know, I love betting on Steve Alford.
- 37:09No, not really, but I out here, Boise State down for Leon Rice's
- 37:13team. I'm going to grab the 6 1/2 with
- 37:14the full pack tonight and then late night and this is probably
- 37:17my most intriguing game of the night.
- 37:19It's a big 10 affair. Indiana at USC, obviously, we've
- 37:22seen both of these teams against the Hawkeyes this season.
- 37:26I think US CS better. I'm getting a point.
- 37:29I'll just play the money line minus one O2.
- 37:31Best price that is out there. USC on the money line at home
- 37:34against the Hoosiers. That's a Peacock affair.
- 37:38Peacock 9 Bel. Did I misspeak?
- 37:40Drake plays at Belmont. Belmont.
- 37:42Yeah, Belmont Tonight they're getting getting 9 1/2.
- 37:45Speaking of kind of weird scheduling things, I was
- 37:48Tuesday. Friday this week.
- 37:49Yes. And I was looking at, well,
- 37:51maybe there's a women's game that I can jump aboard,
- 37:53something like that. There is a total out of the 368
- 37:57teams or whatever it is, and all the D1 basketball, there is a
- 38:00total tonight, 123-4568 women's college basketball games. 8
- 38:06that's even possible with that many teams that only has are
- 38:10going on a Tuesday night. Eight games, 16 teams involved.
- 38:14Guess it's going to be a busy slate on Wednesday, Thursday if
- 38:16that's the case, but just found that really, really odd.
- 38:19Yeah, no, no doubt about it. All right.
- 38:20Good stuff. Tomorrow, Cappy will join us.
- 38:23I'll look forward to catching up with the cap man.
- 38:25What else have we got going on tomorrow?
- 38:26Jeopardy champion. Of our three time Jeopardy
- 38:30champion Vinny Ire. He covers the NFL for The
- 38:32Sporting News. He'll join us, John Bowen Camp
- 38:35on Iowa and a couple of other topics with our buddy John B.
- 38:39So that will be fun. And then late night hoops, the
- 38:41Hawks and the Huskies a 10:00 tip.
- 38:44So there's no way you're gonna stay up.
- 38:46For it, I'll say the first half for.
- 38:47The first half and then it's straight to bench.
- 38:49Sure. And then get up, get the coffee,
- 38:51go in. Press Start and sit down and
- 38:54fire up the TV. You don't look at your phone.
- 38:56Nothing. You're just not to load it.
- 38:59I just went to the bathroom, came back and anyways, good
- 39:03stuff. All right, that will do it for
- 39:04us. Appreciate you being with us.
- 39:08We'll be back.
