- 0:00Speaker 1: John Meston wrote this return to Dodge City, directed and
- 0:03Speaker 1: produced for CBS by Norman MacDonald. On March 2nd, 1958,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Gunsmoke presented episode 308, The Guitar Reused Script, a repeat
- 0:15Speaker 1: of a story first heard on the series in 1953.
- 0:19Speaker 1: William Conrad is Marshal Matt Dillon, alongside Parley Bear as
- 0:24Speaker 1: Chester Proudfoot, Howard McNair as Doc Adams, and Georgia Ellis
- 0:28Speaker 1: as Kitty. Vic Perrin, John Diener, Lawrence Dobkin, and Harry
- 0:33Speaker 1: Bartell are also heard. Into Dodge City comes Weed Pendle,
- 0:39Speaker 1: an impoverished gentle drifter traveling by mule with a guitar
- 0:43Speaker 1: he will not play. When two former Confederates learn he
- 0:47Speaker 1: served the Union, their hostility draws Dillon and the town
- 0:50Speaker 1: regulars into the matter. Here is the original broadcast.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 1:09Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:15Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:39Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:42Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm that man.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first man they look
- 1:50Speaker 4: for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:53Speaker 3: It's a chancery job.
- 1:54Speaker 4: And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:58Speaker 3: And a little lonely.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Gunsmoke You sure are slow with that beard, Doc.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Here, I'm ready for another.
- 2:17Speaker 6: Oh, yes. Well, you had enough last night, sir.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Matt told me you were still asleep at 9 o'clock
- 2:22Speaker 1: this morning.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I was, and that was mighty kind of him not.
- 2:26Speaker 6: To wake me up. Doctor, are you sure he said
- 2:29Speaker 6: he'd be back? Uh-uh. Now, what in the world is
- 2:35Speaker 6: that fella?
- 2:37Speaker 3: Just came in the door.
- 2:38Speaker 6: You see? With Tyler and Short there?
- 2:41Speaker 7: Oh, him.
- 2:42Speaker 6: Well, that's Weed Pendle. He rode in on a mule
- 2:45Speaker 6: a couple days ago. Well, which has the bigger ears?
- 2:49Speaker 6: Him or his mule?
- 2:52Speaker 5: He is funny looking, all right.
- 2:54Speaker 6: And he acts pretty peculiar, too.
- 2:56Speaker 5: That is scrawny mule, Pendle.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I seen you on him this morning. Well, Pendle, he's
- 3:00Speaker 1: kind of scrawny himself, Short. Maybe some beer fattened him
- 3:04Speaker 1: up a little. I'd like some beer, all right, but
- 3:07Speaker 1: I got no money.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Well, why don't you just sell that guitar of yours?
- 3:12Speaker 1: Sell my guitar? No, I'd never do that. Pendle, you
- 3:16Speaker 1: must have a nickel at least. Last money I had
- 3:19Speaker 1: got stolen. Now, who dares steal money off a tiger
- 3:23Speaker 1: like you, Pendle?
- 3:24Speaker 6: I was asleep. I started to wake up, but they
- 3:28Speaker 6: kicked me in the head. Oh, now, Pendle, you call
- 3:31Speaker 6: that thing a head?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Looked to me more like your neck just growed out
- 3:34Speaker 1: and haired over.
- 3:35Speaker 6: I ain't very handsome.
- 3:38Speaker 5: You sure ain't. Hey, Bontana, three beers.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You buying, Tyler?
- 3:43Speaker 5: Oh, I'm proud to buy.
- 3:45Speaker 6: Fine old soldier like Weed Pendle. How'd you know I
- 3:49Speaker 6: was a soldier? Well, now, I didn't. Where was you
- 3:53Speaker 6: a soldier, Pendle? Third Illinois' Calvary. Illinois.
- 3:58Speaker 4: You're the Yankees.
- 4:02Speaker 6: I never done much. We had hard luck and never
- 4:06Speaker 6: got to see no real Confederates at all. Just a
- 4:09Speaker 6: bunch of.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Ragged-tailed bushwhackers in South Missouri. It was led by an
- 4:14Speaker 1: old chicken thief named McClyde.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Yeah, so they was. Tell me something else, Pendle.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Did you ever get to kill any Klines men?
- 4:23Speaker 1: A few, before I got shot myself. They caught some
- 4:28Speaker 1: of them after and hung them.
- 4:29Speaker 6: But I never did see a hanging.
- 4:31Speaker 7: You never did see one?
- 4:33Speaker 6: Nowheres. I never did. That's so.
- 4:37Speaker 7: Pendle, you know you're in luck. Since we was all
- 4:40Speaker 7: kind of in the war together, so to speak, I'm going.
- 4:42Speaker 6: To show you a hanging.
- 4:44Speaker 3: You're about ready, ain't you, short?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, my rope's on my saddle. I'll get it and
- 4:47Speaker 1: meet you out back. There gonna be a hanging? A
- 4:51Speaker 1: real hanging?
- 4:51Speaker 6: Why, sure there is. And you're lucky, Pendle. You run
- 4:55Speaker 6: into us just in time. Yeah, now, what you talking about, Tyler?
- 4:58Speaker 6: And who you gonna hang? It's kindly a surprise, Chester.
- 5:03Speaker 6: You can watch, though. Now, you know it's a game
- 5:06Speaker 6: of law to hang people around here. I seen Marshal
- 5:08Speaker 6: Dillon ride out of town this morning.
- 5:09Speaker 7: By the time he gets back, it'll be all over.
- 5:12Speaker 7: Don't you try to buck me in short, Chester.
- 5:15Speaker 3: You'd die if you do.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Come on, Peter, come on.
- 5:19Speaker 3: We don't want to miss it.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Sure.
- 5:20Speaker 6: Now, what do you suppose they're up to, Doc? I
- 5:24Speaker 6: don't know, Chester, but I'd sure like to find out. Yeah,
- 5:27Speaker 6: I reckon we better. I sure do wish Mr. Dillon
- 5:31Speaker 6: was here. There they are.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Boy, they're putting rope around Pendle's neck.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Why are you hanging me for?
- 5:45Speaker 6: I ain't done nothing. You was in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Well, sure I was.
- 5:50Speaker 6: We was fighting under that old chicken thief Klein in
- 5:53Speaker 6: South Missouri.
- 5:55Speaker 1: It's a real pleasure to hang a Yankee like you.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But I only done what they told me to. I
- 6:00Speaker 1: didn't kill nobody on purpose.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Now, you just wait a minute, you two.
- 6:03Speaker 5: You've gone far enough.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Shoot him, Tyler. You go shooting anybody and you'll be
- 6:07Speaker 6: the ones to end.
- 6:08Speaker 8: Up on a rope.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Doc ain't armed. It never is. Go on, Tyler.
- 6:11Speaker 1: All right, you tried, but you're sure gonna have to
- 6:13Speaker 1: kill me before you hang anybody.
- 6:14Speaker 6: I'll kill you.
- 6:15Speaker 3: You'll have to kill me too, Tyler. Mr.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Jones. Where'd he come from?
- 6:19Speaker 4: Take your rope off that man's neck short and you
- 6:21Speaker 4: do it quick.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Sure, Marshal. Sure.
- 6:26Speaker 6: I told you you shouldn't hang me. You were just.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Funning him, Marshal. He wasn't going to hang you. What's
- 6:31Speaker 3: this all about, Short?
- 6:33Speaker 6: He's a Yankee, Marshal. Killed a lot of us in
- 6:35Speaker 6: Missouri during the war. We was going to scare him
- 6:38Speaker 6: and then run him off.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You forget about that. And you forget about the war, too.
- 6:41Speaker 3: It's over. Next time I catch up to anything like this,
- 6:44Speaker 3: you'll go to jail.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Go to jail?
- 6:46Speaker 1: Over a dumb Yankee who don't own nothing but a
- 6:49Speaker 1: skinny mule and a guitar?
- 6:50Speaker 3: Get out of here, Short. You too, Tyler.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Well, this Yankee better get out of here, too.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Clean out the dog. Shut up.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And get moving.
- 7:00Speaker 6: See you later, Finley.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I sure do thank you for letting me sleep in
- 7:16Speaker 1: your jail last night, Marshal.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Boy, you've been sleeping before, Pendle.
- 7:20Speaker 6: With my mule? I always do.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 5: I hear you're broke.
- 7:24Speaker 3: What do you do for a living?
- 7:26Speaker 6: I never did nothing much, Marshal. Just ride around on
- 7:29Speaker 6: my mule.
- 7:30Speaker 4: What about your guitar? Don't you ever play and take
- 7:32Speaker 4: up a collection or something?
- 7:34Speaker 3: No, Marshal.
- 7:35Speaker 6: I wouldn't do that.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Why not? Can't you play good enough?
- 7:39Speaker 6: I don't know, Marshal.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I never played it for nobody to hear except me.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Chester, take him over to the Long Branch, will you?
- 7:48Speaker 4: Maybe Sam can give him a job of some kind.
- 7:51Speaker 6: It wouldn't be steady, would it?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Well, I don't know, but why shouldn't it be?
- 7:57Speaker 6: Because I'll be leaving in a day or two.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Oh? Where are you headed?
- 8:02Speaker 5: Nowhere.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Nowhere?
- 8:05Speaker 6: Just ride around on my mule. I always do. Where
- 8:09Speaker 6: you from, anyway, Pendle? I was born in San Benito.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Oh, the Rio Grande, huh?
- 8:15Speaker 6: Yes, but I left. Took my guitar with me. Never
- 8:19Speaker 6: did go back.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Well, if you're from Texas, how come you fought in
- 8:23Speaker 3: the Union Army?
- 8:24Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 8:25Speaker 6: One army's just like another.
- 8:27Speaker 5: I guess.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe you're right at that.
- 8:31Speaker 6: I've only done what they told me, Marshal.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Sure.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Ah, Chester, take him over to Sam's, would you? All right, sir.
- 8:38Speaker 6: I left my guitar out back. I'll go get it.
- 8:43Speaker 6: He sure is a peculiar little fellow, Mr.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Dillon.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Pretty helpless, too.
- 8:49Speaker 6: You think Short and Tyler are bothering him anymore?
- 8:52Speaker 3: Well, no.
- 8:52Speaker 4: And them, I believe they'd have hung him yesterday if
- 8:54Speaker 4: they could. You tell Sam to let me know if
- 8:57Speaker 4: I even start talking to him again.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Yes, I will.
- 9:00Speaker 1: They're about the meanest pair of men I ever knew.
- 9:04Speaker 8: Yeah, they are.
- 9:05Speaker 3: He'll think of something.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Well, Pendle said he's leaving in a day or two.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I just hope it's soon enough, Chester.
- 9:20Speaker 6: Sam gave Weed Pendle a job.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Sweeping up the saloon and let him live in a
- 9:24Speaker 3: tiny shack out back.
- 9:26Speaker 6: He tried to get him to play.
- 9:27Speaker 4: His guitar, but Pendle wouldn't do it. We all began
- 9:31Speaker 4: to think that he probably didn't even know how. It's
- 9:33Speaker 4: kind of hard to believe that anybody as simple as
- 9:35Speaker 4: he was could learn to do anything.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I looked up short and Tyler and I warned him
- 9:40Speaker 3: again to leave him alone. And they did.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Until one morning a couple of days later. Chester and
- 9:47Speaker 4: I had just come out of Delmonico's. We were walking
- 9:50Speaker 4: up Front Street.
- 9:51Speaker 6: What's with you and him, Mr. Dillon, across the plaza there?
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I see him. Now, let's go over. Pindle and M.U.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Tyler and Short, too. I told them to keep
- 10:07Speaker 1: away from him. Hey, what they laughing at? They're laughing,
- 10:11Speaker 1: and he isn't. What are you supposed to have done
- 10:14Speaker 1: to him?
- 10:15Speaker 3: Look at his mule, Chester. That's what they'd done. Oh,
- 10:20Speaker 3: my goodness.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Well, he's lost the ear.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Oh, my.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Well, I guess there's just no pleasing some men, Tom.
- 10:32Speaker 6: He shouldn't have done that to my mule.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Did you men do this? No.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Now, Marshal, we ain't done nothing to Pendle.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Did they do this, Pendle?
- 10:42Speaker 1: I tried to stop him, but Tyler held me.
- 10:46Speaker 6: And they gave me the ear, Marshal. It's right here, see?
- 10:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:55Speaker 3: All right, turn around, both of you.
- 10:56Speaker 7: What?
- 10:57Speaker 6: Turn around, I said!
- 10:59Speaker 3: Now take their guns, Chester. Yes, sir.
- 11:05Speaker 6: You can't do nothing else, Marshal. We didn't hurt Kendall, no.
- 11:08Speaker 6: I don't like what you did to his mule.
- 11:10Speaker 7: Here.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Hang on. All right, you can turn around now.
- 11:18Speaker 4: I ought to cut an ear off each one of you,
- 11:19Speaker 4: but I can't do that, so I'll do the next
- 11:21Speaker 4: best thing.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Hey, look, you can't... Leave.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Him there, Chester. Gondo, I'm sorry about your mule.
- 11:35Speaker 6: He ain't much of a mule anymore.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Well, you go take care of him, huh? Maybe these
- 11:41Speaker 3: two will leave you alone now.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Poor mule.
- 11:57Speaker 3: You know what Wade Pindle told me yesterday, Matt? That
- 12:00Speaker 3: it could have been most anything. No, it hadn't, Kitty.
- 12:02Speaker 6: No, this kind of made sense. he was ever lonely.
- 12:07Speaker 6: He said, no, he never.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Stayed anywhere long enough to get to know.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Anybody that well.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I think he's not so strange after all.
- 12:19Speaker 6: Oh, now what are they up to? Who? Tyler and Short.
- 12:22Speaker 6: They just came in with Pindle.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Look, Matt, he's got a guitar with him. Yeah. Hey, listen, everybody.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Now, wait a minute.
- 12:30Speaker 6: The little yak is going to play the guitar for us.
- 12:33Speaker 5: At least he's going to try.
- 12:36Speaker 8: Ain't he, yak?
- 12:36Speaker 6: Don't shoot, my mule.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Oh, am I shooting you?
- 12:39Speaker 6: Not if you play good enough.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Go on, get started.
- 12:42Speaker 3: If you know how.
- 12:43Speaker 8: Ha, ha, ha.
- 12:45Speaker 6: All right.
- 12:46Speaker 7: I'll play.
- 12:46Speaker 4: I'm not threatening to kill his mule, Matt.
- 12:48Speaker 6: You've got to stop him.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Now, wait a minute, kiddo. Don't just sit quiet.
- 12:52Speaker 5: I haven't seen him in a year.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Thomas?
- 13:20Speaker 6: Oh, man. That was beautiful.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Yeah, he kind of surprised everybody.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Tyler and Shaw.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Don't look too happy about it.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Good.
- 13:33Speaker 6: Those bullies are leaving.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Better.
- 13:58Speaker 6: Hello, Yankee.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Been playing that guitar a long time.
- 14:02Speaker 3: That's a very cute pencil.
- 14:05Speaker 6: They wanted me to. They liked it.
- 14:07Speaker 4: For me, in short, we've been waiting to tell you
- 14:09Speaker 4: how we like it, too. Yeah, let me see that guitar, Pendle.
- 14:12Speaker 7: No.
- 14:13Speaker 6: You hurt my mule. Give it to me.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I got a gun in your belly, Pendle, don't you?
- 14:18Speaker 6: I want my guitar. You can't have it. I just
- 14:21Speaker 6: want to sort of tune it for you first. Oh, yeah. And,
- 14:26Speaker 6: you know, there's another thing that's wrong with this guitar.
- 14:28Speaker 6: It's a little bit too big for a man like you.
- 14:31Speaker 6: But I can fix that, too. There you are, Yankee soldier.
- 14:36Speaker 6: All right, that ought to learn. Let's go now, Ken.
- 14:39Speaker 6: Let's go.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Are they both dead, Doc?
- 15:00Speaker 7: Oh, yes.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Real dead. For several hours, at least. Well, they must
- 15:05Speaker 4: have been asleep when it happened, Doc. Well, it looks
- 15:08Speaker 4: like Short there struggled a little. I guess Tyler got
- 15:11Speaker 4: his first and it woke Short up for a minute.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Well, he wasn't awake very long then. It was long
- 15:16Speaker 3: enough to see who was cutting his throat, probably.
- 15:19Speaker 6: Well, they can't talk now.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Well, I'm all through here.
- 15:25Speaker 6: What do you want to do with him?
- 15:26Speaker 4: Well, let the hotel worry about him.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I guess it's weed Pendle I want now.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Well, he's in him such a mile, little fellow, too.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Any man can take just so much, Chester.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I sure hate to see poor Pendle hang for killing
- 15:40Speaker 4: these two buzzards, Matt.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Chester, wait for me at the jail. I'll bring him
- 15:44Speaker 3: over there as soon as I find him. Sam.
- 15:57Speaker 6: What'll it be, Marshal?
- 15:58Speaker 3: Where's Weed Pendle?
- 16:00Speaker 4: I just sent him out back for a bucket of sawdust.
- 16:01Speaker 4: What do you want him for? Short and Tyler got
- 16:04Speaker 4: their throats cut early this morning.
- 16:07Speaker 3: That's good.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I guess their smashing his guitar was too much for Pendle.
- 16:12Speaker 6: And so, there he is now. Pendle, come over here.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Morning, Marshal.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Morning, Pendle. Pendle, where was you last night?
- 16:26Speaker 6: I don't know. You're a guest.
- 16:28Speaker 3: You don't know?
- 16:29Speaker 6: Wait a minute, Marshal.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Where was you after they wrecked your guitar, Pendle? I
- 16:35Speaker 1: sat in the alley a while, then I come back
- 16:37Speaker 1: in here.
- 16:38Speaker 3: That's right.
- 16:40Speaker 9: And he was so broke up about his guitar, I
- 16:42Speaker 9: didn't want to leave him alone, so I put him
- 16:43Speaker 9: on the.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Floor of my room. Ain't that right, Pendle? Go on,
- 16:47Speaker 6: tell him now.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Sure, that's right. Are you trying to alibi for him, Sam? Why, no, Marshal.
- 16:52Speaker 3: What do I care about him?
- 16:54Speaker 6: Hey, some people care about me. Who?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Oh, he's just talking, Marshal. Who cares about you, Pennell?
- 16:59Speaker 3: Tell me.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Those men.
- 17:01Speaker 8: What men?
- 17:01Speaker 9: He means some of the boys who was here when
- 17:03Speaker 9: he came back with his busted guitar, Marshal. I just
- 17:06Speaker 9: told them outside there was Ansel.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 17:10Speaker 3: They liked his music, didn't they?
- 17:12Speaker 6: They liked to hear me play.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Who was in here then, Sam? Well, now, Marshal, you
- 17:18Speaker 3: know how it is. I'm busy pouring drinks, and I don't.
- 17:21Speaker 6: Pay no mind to who's here and who ain't.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I couldn't rightly say at all. Okay, Sam, I guess
- 17:29Speaker 3: I can't beat the truth out of you.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Marshal, who cares about talent short?
- 17:34Speaker 3: Dad is better off without this. There's a law against murder, Sam,
- 17:37Speaker 3: and it's the same for everybody. And I'll be back later.
- 17:46Speaker 8: What are you going to do now, Mr.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Dillon?
- 18:00Speaker 4: Well, I've done all I can, Chester. The whole town's
- 18:03Speaker 4: just plain quit talking. Nobody knows anything.
- 18:07Speaker 6: I reckon they're all protecting Penal.
- 18:09Speaker 3: They are. But he didn't do it.
