- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by C Kick. This is episode 445.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corden. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:27Howdy folks, how we doing on this fine, beautiful middle of
- 0:34the week podcast? I was doing some thinking today
- 0:38and had the thought that it's been a minute since I reminded
- 0:43folks of why I look the way that I look.
- 0:48And I don't just mean generally speaking.
- 0:51We could use an explanation there as well, but that's OK.
- 0:56I in, in regards to what I'm wearing, 'cause I, when I, when
- 1:02I was going back looking at some, some old video from like
- 1:05the past month, 'cause I was just sifting through some files.
- 1:09I, I saw the thumbnails of like our last, I don't know, eight
- 1:14episodes and they all look the same because it's just me in
- 1:18this hideous Oakland A's polo and visor.
- 1:26And I was like, man, it's been a minute since I've explained why
- 1:30I'm wearing what I'm wearing. Because I'm getting to the point
- 1:33where I'm, I'm starting to think that the people that are seeing
- 1:35our clips on social and seeing our post, they're going, why,
- 1:42why, what's up with this guy? Does he have, like, is he have a
- 1:49screw loose? Maybe like, why is he so
- 1:52infatuated with the A's? It's not, it's not the case.
- 1:56As a reminder in case you're new.
- 1:58First of all, welcome. Second of all, I can subscribe
- 2:03on our YouTube. Get that done.
- 2:05Get. Just get that out of the way.
- 2:06Yeah, just get that done out of the way.
- 2:09Third of all, third ZS. Third.
- 2:14Thirdly, lost a bet, Lost a bet to Nate regarding the Oakland
- 2:21A's performance. I thought they were going to do
- 2:22better than they did over a certain call it two week span.
- 2:27They didn't do as well as I thought they would.
- 2:29They were hot at the time and then just fell flat on their
- 2:32face over that 14 game period. Which brings us here, yellow
- 2:36polo, green visor. There you have it.
- 2:40I just need to remind everyone because didn't want, didn't want
- 2:45people thinking that again had a screw loose because I don't.
- 2:48Well, maybe that's up for debate.
- 2:50You may have your own thoughts on that.
- 2:51I I would like to think that I don't, or at least I'm if I'm
- 2:56close, I'm not there yet, but simply because of a bet.
- 3:00The screws are loosening. My favorite comments, by the
- 3:04way, are when people, anytime you have like a comment about
- 3:06another team and then there's one comment that's like, says
- 3:10the guy in Oakland A's stuff. I love that.
- 3:15I love those. Like you're not allowed to have
- 3:17an opinion on other. Teams.
- 3:19Yeah. Like, I've, I've never
- 3:21understood that. I've never understood that.
- 3:22God forbid a fan of a team has an opinion about something else
- 3:26in the league that he's watching.
- 3:28Love those, love those. I can't.
- 3:31Do we have any smell coming yet? No, no smell dude, no.
- 3:37I may even auction this thing off at the end of it the.
- 3:40Game the game Worn gold gold athletics, polo.
- 3:44Send it to the hall. Yeah, forget an auction, I don't
- 3:48need the money. I'll send it to the hall.
- 3:50It's true. I like that plan.
- 3:52I like that plan. Speaking of the Hall, is Jerks
- 4:01and Profar gonna make the Hall of Fame on this season alone?
- 4:04I mean on track. My goodness, Jerks and Profar,
- 4:09have a day. Have a have a season.
- 4:12Have back-to-back seasons Did well last year?
- 4:16No. But to this level, let me check
- 4:22I'm so I'm so fixated on this year.
- 4:24I, I maybe have lost sight of of how well he did last year.
- 4:28He had I hit, let's see, I had 9 bombs hit 242 San.
- 4:40He he did well in San Diego, though the short stint at the
- 4:42end of the year there. Maybe that's what I was
- 4:45thinking. Of hit 295, yeah, I think that's
- 4:48what you're thinking. Like right there.
- 4:50OPS plus 116 loves it in San Diego, loves it slam Diego.
- 4:54You could say some some have, but this beef man, I mean, I
- 5:02didn't think that I I I would have thought I I know.
- 5:08First of all, let me say this. I know the Nationals take a
- 5:11really, really, really long time to get over over things.
- 5:15The fans specifically, not not necessarily the organization,
- 5:18but they take a really, really, really long time to get over
- 5:21things. And when I saw it like the first
- 5:24second I see that the Nationals and Padres are are clearing
- 5:28benches. My first thought is these two
- 5:33organizations are still are are still upset that they let Juan
- 5:36Soto walk out the door. I'm going.
- 5:40Well, that seems a little silly to be clearing benches.
- 5:43Over. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:44I mean behind closed doors. Yeah, or maybe over e-mail,
- 5:48like, hey, let's let's let's get together one time, one of these
- 5:52days. Coming up, we can share our
- 5:54thoughts and feelings about how much we miss one of the greatest
- 5:56players in baseball right now. That's fine.
- 5:59No need to clear benches. You know that.
- 6:00No need for that. Let's be gentleman here.
- 6:04But on a more serious note, you come to find out that Jerks and
- 6:08Profar was at the center of a lot of drama, lot of drama.
- 6:14So I believe we take this back. Let's rewind here.
- 6:17We go back to Monday, Monday night.
- 6:20I believe the game, first game of the series was Yeah.
- 6:24That was the walk off. Yep, Monday night they
- 6:28intentionally walk Luis Soraas to get to jerks and profile,
- 6:32which I don't know, I mean those guys.
- 6:37On. Yeah, yeah, it's an interesting
- 6:41decision and I know, I know we can sit here and play the
- 6:44hindsight game all we want, but it's it's not a it's not like
- 6:49you're walking pro far or it's not like you're walking walking
- 6:53arise to get to a scrub. I mean, we just talked about it.
- 6:56I get. That I don't know.
- 6:58We, we don't, I don't know the scouting report, you know what I
- 7:00mean? They have they have every number
- 7:02of every match up and and situation and and it probably
- 7:06made sense on paper. Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:11I mean, it, it worked out. Profar walks it off to RBI
- 7:16single. They get the they get the win on
- 7:18Monday. Tuesday night is when things got
- 7:24a little little testy, little heated, gets into a little bit
- 7:32with Nationals catcher Keep it Marie's, which I don't.
- 7:36Start the game. Yeah, like and and if you go
- 7:40back and watch the clip, Ruiz seems like he's Yeah, no,
- 7:46certainly. But it it seemed like he was
- 7:48being somewhat friendly about it, or at least that's what the
- 7:51IT had the appearance of. He's got the hand on the
- 7:53shoulder, got the pat. Chest.
- 7:54Yeah, that chest, Pat. Yeah.
- 7:57Like, I mean, we've seen stuff like that before.
- 8:02So that happens. They they go back and forth a
- 8:05little bit. Didn't look like Profar was
- 8:06saying much. But then where things seemed to
- 8:08escalate was when Manny Machado walks over and starts to
- 8:11separate the two. But what's interesting is if you
- 8:13go back and watch the clip, even when even when the when Ruiz and
- 8:19Profar start to like, you know, back up, people start pulling
- 8:22them apart. Machado, Machado doesn't seem
- 8:25like he's, he's all that jacked up in in the moment.
- 8:29Like he he kind of pulls Profar away a little bit or Ruiz, I
- 8:34can't remember which one. He he separated, but in that
- 8:37moment he didn't look like he was all that fired up.
- 8:39So I'm going maybe this just escalated because you had the
- 8:42fans in the back getting lit. You had the, I'm sure at that
- 8:46point in time you had the players from the respective
- 8:50dugouts making their way out. So I'm going, maybe we could
- 8:52have avoided this, but alas, didn't work out that way.
- 8:57Things get a little heated and then the UMS issue the warnings
- 9:06and the Mackenzie Gore, who if you if you recall was in the
- 9:10Padres organization, which makes this a little more interesting,
- 9:14immediately hits profile in the foot.
- 9:17Now let me ask you. No, thank you.
- 9:24The foot. What are we doing?
- 9:25Like, look, I'd love Don Orsillo, and we're going to play
- 9:29the call here in just a SEC. If you haven't heard the call,
- 9:31it was incredible. Arguably one of the best
- 9:35commentators broadcasters in in all of baseball.
- 9:38Got to be top two. And he's not two.
- 9:42No, he's he's like top top three.
- 9:44Top three for sure, for sure. A lot of people would say #1
- 9:47that's probably my vote. Little bias there.
- 9:50But I mean, you'd be hard pressed to find somebody better
- 9:53than Don or so. But in the call and you'll hear
- 9:56it makes it, I don't know if he's just swept up in a moment.
- 10:00He he's saying how it's intentional.
- 10:02I think what's his name? Mudd.
- 10:07What is that his nickname Mudd something I can't remember his
- 10:10partner's name. I think he was saying that it he
- 10:14thought it was intentional or that it was like clear as day or
- 10:18something, something along those lines.
- 10:19But the Padres organization, at least from the forward facing
- 10:25side that we were made aware of, seemed to think it was
- 10:28intentional. I didn't think it was
- 10:29intentional. You hit the guy in the foot.
- 10:30If you're going to hit somebody, you're going probably waist up,
- 10:33you're going anywhere in like the middle third.
- 10:35You're going like thigh to letter on the on the chest.
- 10:40Yeah, I would say booty cheeks to the to the shoulders unless
- 10:44you're you're a little dirty. You know you would try.
- 10:47To which I I don't think I don't Mackenzie Gore doesn't give me
- 10:50that doesn't give me that impression.
- 10:52Like not at all. Just spotted it up poorly.
- 10:54You can see base off his reaction right away.
- 10:57Like no intent there. But it you know how these things
- 11:01go, it it doesn't matter in the moment what the intent is.
- 11:05Things can get fired up real fast and things things happened
- 11:12immediately. Machado.
- 11:14Well, first of all, SHIELD came out wondering why Gore didn't
- 11:19get it. Or yeah, no, he came out
- 11:28wondering what was. I'd have to go back and check
- 11:31the clip. Was he mad that Gore got Did
- 11:35Gore get tossed? I thought they just issued
- 11:36warnings 'cause he got a shell, got ejected.
- 11:47I don't remember. I don't remember what his what
- 11:51his issue was when he came out, but got ejected and Machado
- 11:56immediately hits A2. Run home, run.
- 11:58Nate, where'd you go? Where did Nate go?
- 12:07Nate's video dropped. What the heck?
- 12:11Nate? Nate, come back.
- 12:20Hello, Nate. All right, Well, well, Nate
- 12:29figures that out. I'm going to play this.
- 12:31I'm going to play this call from Orsillo on the Machado home run
- 12:36because like we were just talking about possibly the call
- 12:42of the year thus far, but it's it's just another day for Don
- 12:45Orsilla. But check the check out this
- 12:47call and Manny Machado so they can make a pay.
- 12:50Tie your eye a deep black film breaker back at the wall.
- 12:55Take that, says Mana Machado. Profar's fired up, but he should
- 13:00be. They hit him intentionally, and
- 13:02then Mana hits one out of the yard intentionally, and the
- 13:06Padres take it to nothing. League.
- 13:09How about them apples? I mean, what a call, Nate, Where
- 13:29did you go, dude? What just happened?
- 13:46Nate, There you are. Don't know where you went.
- 13:50Where I. Went Where'd you go?
- 13:53I've been here the whole time. I just played the call, the
- 13:57chat, the chats, talking about it.
- 14:01I don't know where you went. You disappeared and then it said
- 14:04something went wrong. So I went back into the studio
- 14:07and then your thing was not there.
- 14:09It's just said no devices connected for you.
- 14:13And I was like, well, I'm not going to enter the stage and
- 14:15come back to nothing. And then it kicked me out again,
- 14:20and then I came back in, and now you're here, all right?
- 14:23Full, full transparency. We made an upgrade to our
- 14:26planned or software that we use and it might it it might be
- 14:32demanding a little bit more bandwidth.
- 14:33So apologize for some for some of these technical issues.
- 14:36If it happens again, I'm just going to keep talking and Nate
- 14:40will just have to figure it out the way he did.
- 14:43I'm hard wired in. I don't even understand.
- 14:45I I don't know, it doesn't make any sense.
- 14:47How about we just you, I don't know if did you catch the call?
- 14:50It's doesn't sound like you caught the call.
- 14:52I know I probably the second you played it I got kicked out.
- 14:55It was so good. I want to play it again just so
- 14:58you can catch it. Here we go.
- 14:59And Manny Machado so they can make a pay high ride.
- 15:02Deep blood film Rinker back at the wall.
- 15:06Take that, says Manny Machado profile's fired up, but he
- 15:11should be. They hit him intentionally and
- 15:14then Manny hits one out of the yard intentionally and the
- 15:17Padres take it to nothing. Leave.
- 15:20How about them apples? I'm so on the fence about being
- 15:32a Homer while you're a broadcaster.
- 15:35Like I'm so on the fence about it.
- 15:39I would I would probably lean towards wanting.
- 15:44I think I'm OK with it because like if you think of majority of
- 15:47the listeners are going to be a fan of that team.
- 15:51And when the team's doing well, I'm not trying to have you play
- 15:54like a middle of the road. Like, no, get fired up with me.
- 15:57Like, I mean, be tasteful about it.
- 15:59Just don't, don't be like freaking clown.
- 16:02And I forget the guy's name in Chicago.
- 16:05Like for all the haters. Like no, like that was just
- 16:10corny. Like a drunken fret fret,
- 16:13brother. Keep it, keep it tasteful, get
- 16:15fired up, but don't act like an idiot.
- 16:18But yeah, the the intentional comment I thought was a little
- 16:22much. I didn't, I didn't think it was
- 16:23intentional. But then later in the game he
- 16:27Profar hits a Grand Slam. So I don't know what it is about
- 16:30these catchers that Profar just gets fired up by.
- 16:34But is this his new? Is this his new like arc story
- 16:44like profile versus the catchers?
- 16:46I I I don't understand why this is becoming a theme.
- 16:48It's. Funny, because he always looks
- 16:50innocent. Yeah, like he it looks like he's
- 16:54not really talking anything. Like.
- 16:58I don't know. No, in that interaction he had
- 17:01with Ruiz, he was just kind of like, he was just chilling,
- 17:04like, all right, well. The the trot was for sure slower
- 17:09on the Grand Slam for sure slower.
- 17:13It took a little while to get to first base, but I'm here for it.
- 17:18I liked all of it. I don't know.
- 17:21You know how I feel about these brawls and benches clearing.
- 17:23It's like it's, I don't know. Yeah, but then.
- 17:28But then you had Davy Martinez coming out after the game being
- 17:32like, yeah, it's a good way to send a message, but that's our
- 17:35way of letting him know we don't tolerate it or something like
- 17:38that. I'm like baby, come on, like.
- 17:42And it's just it's. I I just think the game is at a
- 17:45point now we're like, we're past the point of being able to
- 17:48really have commentary on this whole like let the kids play
- 17:55narrative like it is what it is at this point.
- 17:57There's no like it's. Fully taken over.
- 18:00So it's really not even worth these guys time, IE Davy
- 18:06Martinez to get upset by certain reactions or whatever because
- 18:11you're just going to, regardless how you, the listener may feel
- 18:15about it. These guys are going to come out
- 18:18looking like sore losers Anytime they open their mouth, whether
- 18:20whether or not there's validity to what they're saying, they're
- 18:24going to look like sore losers because the automatic reaction
- 18:27is we're like, oh, don't lose the game or don't throw one down
- 18:30the middle. It's like, yes, those things can
- 18:32be true, but also from a guy like Davey Martinez point of
- 18:36view, you can still have an appreciation and respect for the
- 18:41game and want there to be like some sort of, you know, like
- 18:45which sort of standard. We're in this weird transition
- 18:50period, man, where they're still like the old, old school
- 18:53mentalities that are very much a part of the game, more so
- 18:58amongst coaches than players. But that mentality is for sure
- 19:03still in in the picture. So I don't know.
- 19:06I mean, maybe we can have this conversation 1520 years down the
- 19:09road when the pod's rolling still and and maybe things will
- 19:15change a little bit. But what?
- 19:16That's what I'm saying because these guys are just
- 19:18automatically going to look like sore losers anytime they open
- 19:21their mouth. My my thought is to just lean
- 19:25into it hard. Like let the game cave in on
- 19:28itself so bad. Like let the game eat itself
- 19:31with this whole with this narrative and people not caring
- 19:35about other people's feelings but then also like getting
- 19:37offended when their feelings get hurt.
- 19:40Like have guys. It's going to cycle back.
- 19:42It will cycle back, I said. I said years ago I was like,
- 19:46we're or not even. It was maybe like a year, a year
- 19:48or two ago. I said we're literally going to
- 19:49get to a point where guys are going to start pulling their
- 19:51pants down like when they cross, when they cross home, home
- 19:54plate. Well, I just, I just watched a
- 19:56video on social the other day where it was like it was like
- 20:00the. Like high school seven on sevens
- 20:05for football and the receiver catches the touchdowns like a 40
- 20:10yard bomb corner of the end zone and doesn't celebrate and all
- 20:15the comments are like no celebration, so cold.
- 20:18And I'm like, that's. That's literally what the game
- 20:22was for like 100 years, but it's alright.
- 20:24So that's what's going to start. Yeah.
- 20:26It's going to just cycle backward.
- 20:27That goes harder than than actual celebration.
- 20:33Acting like he's been there before.
- 20:34Flame emoji, flame emoji, flame emoji.
- 20:36It's like, OK, Yep, that's there.
- 20:38We are where, where we were at. That's what we were trying to,
- 20:41you know, kind of keep around but.
- 20:43Stupid I I appreciate every single one of you listeners and
- 20:48followers and I apologize if this comes off in the wrong way,
- 20:53but I the generation below us sucks.
- 20:58OK. Sucks.
- 20:59Wow. Well.
- 21:01Sucks. You know, they're doing some
- 21:05good things in the world. The only, the only, the only
- 21:08real complaint I have, and I didn't think we'd get off the
- 21:11rails this much. The only complaint I have about
- 21:13the generation below us is the pajamas in public thing.
- 21:17Like it's out of, it's out of. It's way out of hand.
- 21:21Like I don't understand that at all.
- 21:22Like it could be, it could be our grandparents doing that.
- 21:25And I'd be like, whoa, like, chill out.
- 21:29Do you know that the mid calf socks are back?
- 21:31They are. They are if you wear if you wear
- 21:33ankle socks, you're for sure a millennial.
- 21:36I'm. Super conscious of that now
- 21:37dude. I I.
- 21:39I wore mid calfs in high school. That that was the thing in high
- 21:43school. So don't.
- 21:46That's what. I can't pull on this string
- 21:49anymore. Sweater will become undone.
- 21:54Can't do it. Let's talk, let's talk the
- 21:59National League wild card race, because I mean, what even is
- 22:06this hodgepodge? And I say National League wild
- 22:09card, but really, if you look at it, if you look at the American
- 22:13League, All right, so, so bear with me here.
- 22:17With the National League, you've got the top three seeds right
- 22:22now, Braves, Padres, Cardinals, Cardinals.
- 22:26Where do the Cardinals come from?
- 22:28It's been hot, dude. And then you have all but two
- 22:34teams at the bottom 2, the Miami Marlins, Colorado Rockies,
- 22:40they're out of it. We already knew that.
- 22:43The Reds entering entering, we'll say Wednesday, entering
- 22:48Wednesday, four games back, Cubs four games back.
- 22:51Nats three games back, Giants three games back, Pirates two
- 22:55games back. Mets 1 1/2 games back.
- 22:57D backs, 1 1/2 games back. There's been a lot of talk about
- 23:00the National League wild card, but again, flip over to the
- 23:03American League. All but all but three.
- 23:09And, and I have my own opinions about the Blue Jays.
- 23:11I think they're probably along the same lines as yours
- 23:14regarding the outlook for that, for their squad.
- 23:18But if you what, just based on numbers, if you want to say the
- 23:21Blue Jays at 6 1/2 back are still in it, they only have one
- 23:25less team in it. So really, there's only five
- 23:28teams in baseball right now that are like DOA.
- 23:34Yeah. If that's what like if, if
- 23:36that's what we're looking at, if we're looking at the full slate
- 23:39of 30 teams, you got 5. She's talking Angels, A's, White
- 23:43Sox, Marlins, Rockies. That's it.
- 23:47Dead. Dead in the water.
- 23:49Everybody else scratching and clawing.
- 23:54Scratching and clawing. I like that.
- 23:57I think we all like that. Do we though?
- 24:00Do we, do we like that? Because the Blue Jays, as I
- 24:05mentioned, the aforementioned Jays who are on a bit of a
- 24:09slide, I think we can pretty much say done.
- 24:14But again, we'll just go off of what's on paper right now. 6 1/2
- 24:18games back, 36 and 43, flip over to the National League, the Reds
- 24:2737 and 43. So like, yes, it's good, but is
- 24:37it good? The American League is super top
- 24:40heavy, whereas the National League is is more just like
- 24:46balanced overall. You know what I mean?
- 24:50Like there's all these teams are hovering around 500, if you want
- 24:55to call that good or not, I don't know.
- 24:57But the American League is for sure more top heavy.
- 25:04Yeah. But just like looking at the
- 25:05National League though, we're the teams that are we'll just
- 25:09say under the line, like out on the outside looking in, it's
- 25:18like the Pirate, like the Mets, the D backs.
- 25:22I guess I'm just going to give them their respect for based on
- 25:26the way last year ended and you know what they're able to
- 25:28accomplish. I'm going to maybe I'll give
- 25:30them a pass. But like after them, what are we
- 25:33really looking at here? The Mets, the Pirates, the
- 25:35Giants, the Nationals, the Cubs, the Reds, and I know I just
- 25:39listed off like half the league, but none of those teams are
- 25:45playing all that inspiring baseball.
- 25:48Like, sure, the Mets are what, eight and two in their last 10?
- 25:53So I mean, like they're playing well, but we know how this how
- 25:55that story ends. So I'm not even going to.
- 25:57I'm not even going to pull at that thread.
- 25:59Yeah. But other than that, it's like,
- 26:02yeah, maybe it's not as top heavy as the American League,
- 26:04but. I'm not saying it's better
- 26:07baseball by any means. I don't.
- 26:09I don't think that's not the. Argument here.
- 26:12Yeah, objectively it's just not. I mean, the American League this
- 26:15year at least, is yeah, I would argue just.
- 26:19I don't here's why I say it's a good thing though is because
- 26:22like the Diamondbacks were a fun story that the the that was a
- 26:30fun run that everyone got to witness through the post season.
- 26:33It was, but you remember how that ended up in in October?
- 26:36Like, not not. None of us were excited, really.
- 26:41Yeah, I mean, I understand that. I think it's the right team, you
- 26:45know what I mean? Like if you can get the right
- 26:46team in that spot where it's like everyone can kind of gather
- 26:51around and and root for. It's hard to say.
- 26:55I think we had our own our own reasoning behind not being
- 26:59excited. True.
- 27:03But this is this is what it is now.
- 27:06This is, it's like a, it's such a quantified game where it's
- 27:13like everything is so calculated to where all you got to do is
- 27:18get in and we'll see what happens.
- 27:21And it's like this balance of spending a reasonable amount of
- 27:28money and, and just finding a way to sneak in and see what the
- 27:34players can do at that point. Like that is the new formula.
- 27:39If we can, if we can do our best in scouting, if we can do our
- 27:43best in analytics and we can win 8788 games and find a way in, we
- 27:51like our chances versus spending another hundred $120 million on
- 27:57payroll and having that pressure of being the the bigger
- 28:02disappointment if you don't win a ring and we're witnessing it
- 28:07with multiple teams. You know what I mean?
- 28:09Like it's it's year over year of this thing.
- 28:12The Mets being one of the biggest disappointments, but
- 28:15that's because of the size of their payroll.
- 28:17That's the size of their like what they're invested into their
- 28:20roster. So I don't I don't know what's
- 28:24good for baseball. I I think it's you're, you're
- 28:27going to see more teams being able to do focus on this and
- 28:31keep the payroll in a manageable spot.
- 28:34And now you're hearing these big market teams saying, well, this
- 28:39isn't sustainable. We need to drop our payroll down
- 28:41and get, you know what I mean? So it's like it's this weird
- 28:46limbo that we're in. Then that's this is the result.
- 28:52You're going to have a lot of teams that are kind of in the
- 28:54hunt and it's just get in and hope for the best.
- 29:02Just tread water as long as you can.
- 29:05But I, I just think, and we've talked about this on multiple
- 29:08occasions, but it's worth repeating because we're, we're
- 29:12quickly approaching the deadline.
- 29:14I just think with the, and this isn't new, like this isn't the
- 29:19first year of an expanded postseason.
- 29:21So this isn't the first time we're seeing this.
- 29:23But I think as a reminder with the expanded postseason and it
- 29:29based on the the small sample size we have thus far seen how
- 29:33teams approach it about teams that are on the brink like how
- 29:38they behave with their with their farm and and and seeking
- 29:44an impact piece to add. I just don't, I'm not saying
- 29:50that there's going to be like a lead league wide collusion, but
- 29:55I would venture to say because I feel like more than not, these
- 30:02owners are going to be looking to save money or maybe not save
- 30:08money, but rather just not spend it.
- 30:12With that said, I would my guess is that these teams are going to
- 30:17as, as teams like the D backs get into the World Series, like
- 30:23as long as we have stories like this, these middle of the road
- 30:27on the on the fence teams are going to be looking around
- 30:29going, Hey, if we all just kind of sit back and just let this
- 30:35play out and we all just kind of keep our wallets in our back
- 30:38pockets, we can all save a little bit of money as long as
- 30:43nobody jumps out ahead. Like we got to make sure that
- 30:46these teams on the fences are all on the same page here.
- 30:51If we all just sit back, we can save a buck and just let it play
- 30:55out and be and be competitive with what we've got.
- 30:58Yeah, and that's the problem of of the structure.
- 31:01That's what this structure has brought in when you expanded the
- 31:05playoffs. It it allowed teams to do, I'm
- 31:09not going to say the bare minimum, but it allowed owners
- 31:12to be like, well, we're still going to get in and I can save
- 31:18some money here. It sucks.
- 31:22It does. Suck.
- 31:22Now that I'm talking it out more, I think I hate it.
- 31:25Yeah, but. And, and that was the thing.
- 31:27That was the thing when they when Major League Baseball
- 31:29announced that they were expanding the post season, the
- 31:32the two, the two schools of thought were well more teams are
- 31:37going to be able to make that push at the deadline and make
- 31:40that push down down the stretch as as October nears.
- 31:46The other school of thought was what we're just talking about.
- 31:49Well, now that there's a better likelihood of getting in,
- 31:54probably not going to try to do as much because the odds of you
- 31:57getting in are higher because they added an additional 2
- 32:00spots. Right, but the other the other
- 32:04thing is, is that like we've now started to notice a trend where
- 32:07it's not that much of an advantage for a team to win the
- 32:11division and and have, you know, a week off.
- 32:15We've noticed that like the a hotter team at the end of
- 32:18September, rolling into October, getting into a divisions or a
- 32:22wild card spot and staying hot. And like, you know, baseball is
- 32:26not the same as the NFL. Like you don't like letting guys
- 32:30get healthy is is one thing, but you're going to lose momentum.
- 32:34You're going to lose grooves where you're used to playing
- 32:37every day for six months. Why would taking a week off
- 32:42suddenly help you? So if there is anything that
- 32:46needs to happen, it's restructuring what the advantage
- 32:51is of winning a division because it's clear.
- 32:54And I think numbers and analytics will eventually start
- 32:57to back this up, that winning the division is no longer as
- 33:00beneficial, especially when you're talking to owners who are
- 33:04spending as much as they can spend to be a first round exit
- 33:10by a team who spent $150 million less and just got hot at the
- 33:15right time. Like that's what this structure
- 33:18has done. That's what it's messed with.
- 33:20So if there's a way, and I don't know the answer, but if there is
- 33:23a way to change what that advantage is for winning a
- 33:27division, then we might balance that back out.
- 33:34But this is what you're going to get.
- 33:36This is the product that you're going to get.
- 33:38You're going to get basically 500 baseball by 60% of the
- 33:43league throughout the regular season, which means most likely
- 33:49lamer trade deadlines. You have a lot of teams that are
- 33:52still thinking they're in the hunt, that they're not going to
- 33:54sell. This is all the ripple effect of
- 33:58of what that structure has done. Right.
- 34:02And going back to the two schools of thought thing like it
- 34:04was, it was really idealistic of us baseball fans to think or
- 34:10maybe you could maybe even say naive to think that the owners
- 34:13were going to take the first school of thought where it's all
- 34:16right window just open a little bit wider.
- 34:18Let's let's go all let's go even more in this year than we were
- 34:22planning on it. It was naive of us to think that
- 34:25that was going to happen because if you know how business works,
- 34:29if you know how money works, if you know how these majority of
- 34:32these owners work, of course they're going to look for every
- 34:39possible way. Again, not all, but most are
- 34:42going to look for a way, any loophole they can to make it so
- 34:45that they they can hoard prospects.
- 34:48They don't have to make any sort of deal, any sort of risky deal
- 34:52and they don't have to spend any money in the offseason because
- 34:55as long as the window is what or now that the window is wider,
- 35:00they're going to, they're going to defer to, well, let's just
- 35:05let's just roll the dice and see what happens with what we got
- 35:07because our, again, our odds of getting in are that much higher,
- 35:11but they got higher without, without us having to do anything
- 35:16or without us needing to do anything at say the deadline.
- 35:19So. Yeah, that's a bummer.
- 35:23Yeah, it's like it's such AII understand it's a pessimistic
- 35:27way of looking at it, but it that's the reality of it.
- 35:30And I think the product of what we're going to see on on the
- 35:34field is going to suffer as a result.
- 35:36Kind of like like what you and I are saying here, but I don't
- 35:40know, I just need you're going to have your teams that are
- 35:43competitive year in and year out, but I'm just going to need
- 35:47the teams that do make it into the wild card.
- 35:49Like I at the very least, I just need it to be good baseball.
- 35:53I needed to be competitive baseball.
- 35:54Whether or not they're a good team.
- 35:58There's only so much we can do to to to work around that.
- 36:02But I just hope they get hot at the right time and it makes for
- 36:06an interesting fall. At the very least, that's all we
- 36:09can really ask for. So I don't know, it's again
- 36:14looking. Fall.
- 36:15Fall is in autumn, not fall is in crash.
- 36:18Correct. Correct.
- 36:19Correct. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:20Postseason era of of the season, yes.
- 36:27All right, well, we got to talk about some dudes that are
- 36:32straight up bowling. But before we do that, do we
- 36:38want to maybe take a little bit of a game break here?
- 36:41Game Break. And maybe sprinkling that, that
- 36:43game you mentioned last episode of A Little Bit of Land.
- 36:48I don't know. I don't know what we want to
- 36:50call it. I don't know if there's a name
- 36:51for it, but it's the whole. And if you're listening or
- 36:55watching, I'm sure you've you've you're familiar with the game.
- 36:58You start, you, you have a countdown, call it 3 seconds.
- 37:06You share you, you, you share a name.
- 37:08More likely than not, you're going to end up on two
- 37:11completely different ends of the spectrum with with the name, but
- 37:14you. You.
- 37:15Got to figure out what's in common you.
- 37:17Get on the same wavelength and figure out, OK, what is what do
- 37:23these two guys have in common? And then once you name your next
- 37:27guy, then you see if you can get closer or even name, name the
- 37:31same guy. So that's the goal.
- 37:33I figured we could try it, see how it goes, and then maybe keep
- 37:38track of, you know, try to try to top our records by reducing
- 37:44the number of rounds that it takes to to.
- 37:45Get there. So this could be ugly in the
- 37:47beginning here. It could be ugly.
- 37:53I could. You just want me to.
- 37:56You want me to hit the organ audio?
- 37:59I don't think so. We just go 321 bang.
- 38:03I know just little little background music.
- 38:05I don't know. What do you think?
- 38:06Oh well, yeah, yeah, but get the game music going on, I mean.
- 38:09It's only 60 seconds. So I mean, do we think we can do
- 38:12this in 60 seconds? Probably not.
- 38:15Probably not. I could always play it again.
- 38:18If we don't get it in 60 seconds, we could play it again.
- 38:20There's no rules. There's no rules.
- 38:23All right, so it'll be 321. Name the player.
- 38:30OK, All right, 321 Aaron, Joe Hunter.
- 38:40Oh boy. Oh.
- 38:43Goodness. Oh boy. 321 Mickey Mantra.
- 38:50I don't know. I panicked.
- 38:55OK. Mickey Mantle, Mike Trout.
- 38:57Oh, 3321. Willie Mays, Come on, you got to
- 39:09say a name. Willie Mays, All right?
- 39:13I have no idea. I have no idea.
- 39:16I think you were going to say Mike Trout.
- 39:18I you said Mike Trout. I said William.
- 39:20I think you were going to say Mike Trout again at.
- 39:22Least that's what it sounded like.
- 39:23I, I stumbled. I stumbled, I choked.
- 39:25It's, it's on me. This is why it's so hard.
- 39:28It's for names. You know what I mean?
- 39:32All right, well, we didn't we didn't beat the timer there, so
- 39:34may have to run it back. All right, so you said Mike
- 39:36Trout and Willie Mays. OK.
- 39:39We'll go off that. We'll go off that.
- 39:40We'll go off that. This is tough.
- 39:43This is. Really tough.
- 39:44Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold on.
- 39:45Hold on, hold on. Let me get mine.
- 39:47Let me get mine in order. OK.
- 39:52What are they? You got to think of what they
- 39:53have in common. You know what I mean?
- 39:59I need you to get more modern. You're throwing some old.
- 40:01Yeah, that's on me that. Really.
- 40:03That really. That really hurts stuff, you
- 40:05know? You said Mike Charleston, Willie
- 40:07Mays. OK, OK all.
- 40:10Right, 321 Chairman Judge. Oh man, we're not even in the
- 40:20same stratosphere. Probably not.
- 40:24Hold on. This timer's stressing me out,
- 40:27man. I can't do this.
- 40:28I don't. Think I like it, I don't.
- 40:30Think I like it? Yeah, I got to.
- 40:31I got to cut it. It's got my heart rate.
- 40:33I got to cut it. It's.
- 40:35Stressing me out, dude, I'm losing it over here.
- 40:39I'm losing it. With Jim Hemmings and Aaron
- 40:41Judge. I feel like we're not allowed to
- 40:46think though. I feel like that's the the whole
- 40:48like caveat to this game. I, I think you get, you give
- 40:52yourself a couple seconds, you know what I mean, to gather and
- 40:55at least get a name. That's fair.
- 41:00OK, You said Jim Edmonds. I said Aaron Judge.
- 41:05Oh boy, what is that with? Dude, I don't even know.
- 41:09Absolutely nothing. They have nothing in common.
- 41:16This is hard. Oh, OK, I got one.
- 41:19You got one. All right, Yeah, people aren't
- 41:22going to get this, but if you think about it, you might be
- 41:24able to get it. It's not that hard.
- 41:27Do you have a guy? Do you?
- 41:29I have a guy. I don't think it makes any
- 41:30sense. OK, 321 Ramon Laureano.
- 41:40I don't even know Ramon Laureano from the clouds.
- 41:43OK, Ramon Laureano and Jaron Duran we got.
- 41:46Like we're, we're honed in on center fielders here.
- 41:48I think we can get this well. We're going to name every center
- 41:51fielder that's ever played the game by the time we're done with
- 41:54this. It's possible, it's possible,
- 41:56but we're getting into modern day now, getting into current I.
- 42:00Suck at this dude. We're getting into current
- 42:05zeroing in. Do you got a name?
- 42:13I got a name. No, not around.
- 42:16Maybe I don't have a name? Oh, oh, you got a name.
- 42:20Oh, think, think, think. Ramon Laureano.
- 42:26Jaron Duran. Think.
- 42:28What do they have in common? Outside of center field.
- 42:34Yes, OK, I I don't want to have to do this, but I got to give
- 42:41you a hint here. Think teams, think teams played
- 42:43for OK, OK, Ramon Laureano, Jaron Duran.
- 42:52OK, you got a guy. I got a guy. 321 Cokie Henderson
- 43:02Ah, OK, We're good. That was good.
- 43:04We're good. We're we're getting there.
- 43:05We're getting there. Because Ricky.
- 43:06Ricky played for both. So did Coco.
- 43:08Yep, Yep. We maybe got like two more
- 43:13guesses because I feel like this is the closest we're going to
- 43:16get. Oh boy.
- 43:22Oh boy. Oh boy.
- 43:26Ricky Henderson and Coco Crisp. I mean, you can't you we're
- 43:34talking about. We're talking.
- 43:36That's on me. I threw threw an oldie out there
- 43:38and that that probably hurt us a little bit.
- 43:40Coco's from the clouds though it.
- 43:42Couldn't be? It's not, though.
- 43:43It's the same reasoning. All right, all right, let's just
- 43:48let's just think athleticism here.
- 43:51I got a name. OK, I got a name.
- 43:54Athleticism. Both both both guys have played
- 43:58for a lot of teams. Let's let's that's factor that.
- 44:01Oh, OK. 321 Kathy Bradley Junior Well, maybe not a lot, but a few
- 44:12teams. OK, this got to be our last one
- 44:16and then we're just going to have to punt to next next
- 44:19episode. I think we got to have like 1010
- 44:22or less, you know what I mean? Yeah.
- 44:25That's fair, yeah. Moving forward, it's got to be
- 44:2610 or less and then we just keep a running record.
- 44:29Yeah, so Jackie Bradley and and who did I say you said Griffey.
- 44:36Yeah, Jackie Bradley and Griffey.
- 44:39Early Griffey athleticism, Maybe not on the latter end.
- 44:43Jackie Bradley and Griffey, you got anything?
- 44:57Dude, I got we have it. The closest I think we got was
- 45:00Coco Crisp and Ricky Henderson, and that should tell you how
- 45:04we're not really close at all. Yeah, that's true.
- 45:09Who did who? Jackie Bradley.
- 45:12And Griffey. This is this is over.
- 45:19Dude, it's done. This has got This is our last
- 45:21one we got to somehow. This is way too hard.
- 45:25We somehow got to nail it on this one.
- 45:29Griffey and Jackie Bradley Griffey and Jackie Bradley
- 45:35Griffey. Junior, Bradley Junior.
- 45:41I see what you're doing. I mean, I'm kind of kind of
- 45:44lead. I see what you're doing leading
- 45:45the horse to the water here. OK, let me find that name
- 45:47though. Let me find that man.
- 45:50Let me find him. OK, got it.
- 45:55Got it. OK, Do we?
- 45:56Have this. I think we got it.
- 45:58I think we got it. This is big.
- 46:00Is this from the clouds? Because mine's kind of from the
- 46:02clouds. OK, Well then no, it's not big.
- 46:04This is this isn't going to work.
- 46:06Hold on, let me how much from the clouds are we talking?
- 46:11Like clouds from the 90s? Come on, let's think of this,
- 46:15Clouds center fielder Junior. Come on, come on.
- 46:22This is an under the radar name. This There's a lot of listeners
- 46:27that probably won't even be able to know this name, but you and
- 46:30I. Didn't listen you?
- 46:34Because this is what makes sense.
- 46:39Junior center fielder, Am I losing my mind?
- 46:45You are. But you said it's from the
- 46:48clouds. What are we talking about here?
- 46:50You'll you'll understand when I say it.
- 46:54You said our listeners won't understand it, but you and I
- 46:56will understand it. A.
- 46:58A. A lot of listeners, so I'm not
- 46:59going to say everybody some. Dude, I have no idea.
- 47:08A center fielder, Junior. Well, it's not even, it's not
- 47:19even the right answer, but I can't think of anybody else.
- 47:21So I'm just going to say my guide and just see how off we
- 47:23are because I can't think of a junior center fielder.
- 47:28Count it down. Oh, this kills me 321 Gary
- 47:44Matthews Junior. God knew it was something like
- 47:47that, but I said he wasn't even a center fielder.
- 47:50So I went Ronald Kunz Junior. That wasn't even really from the
- 47:52clouds, but that was just find out wrong if we were going for
- 47:55junior center fielder. Not a bad not a bad guess
- 47:57though. But Gary Matthews Junior is for
- 47:58sure a under the under the radar.
- 48:00Why would you go that? I thought you, I thought you, I
- 48:04thought you were there. I thought you your your archives
- 48:07were a. Little deeper?
- 48:09Yeah, apparently not. Apparently not I, if you
- 48:12honestly, if you would have given me maybe just a couple
- 48:14more minutes, I was that's that was the era that I was trying to
- 48:18rack my brain on. I wasn't going back to like the
- 48:2040s or. Anything late 90s, early 2000s.
- 48:23Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Dang, that's a.
- 48:26Shame. I think we'll hone this in
- 48:28eventually. Oh yeah, we'll get, we'll get to
- 48:30the the we'll get to the same. Way.
- 48:33It's a tough one, though. That was good.
- 48:34Way harder with players I think. That's that's tough.
- 48:37That's real tough. OK, Speaking of players, let's
- 48:41let's talk to some players. That's that's a nice little game
- 48:43break. Game break?
- 48:45What do we want to call that by the way?
- 48:49I think it still falls into the category of name that player.
- 48:52Name that player. OK, that's fair.
- 48:54I like that. We're both just doing at the
- 48:56same time. That's true.
- 48:58I like Speaking of players, Brian Reynolds pretty good
- 49:03entering Wednesday. Hold on, I need to confirm
- 49:06because I saw conflicting reports.
- 49:08Is it 22 or is it 23? I thought it got extended to 23
- 49:11today. I thought it got extended to 23
- 49:13as well, but let me just let me just check here because these
- 49:17notes with the time that we record it's it can be a little
- 49:20tricky at times based on when the game start, when we record,
- 49:24when I get my notes. Games are still going. 23
- 49:30consecutive games. That was 7 hours ago.
- 49:32There we go. Yep, so 23 consecutive games,
- 49:39the longest hit streak of the 2024 season to dates.
- 49:46Not just this hitting streak dude.
- 49:48Well, it coincidentally started We were talking about this
- 49:50before we hopped on started at the beginning of June.
- 49:55I saw a a post forgive me, I I don't remember who shared it so
- 49:59I unfortunately I can't credit it, but you can search these
- 50:03keywords and you can find it and they can bask in the glory.
- 50:07Highest career June batting average since 1946 As it stands
- 50:14right now, I think entering Wednesday has the highest career
- 50:19batting average for June since 1946.
- 50:23Three 47, topping Jackie Robinson's 346.
- 50:28I understand we still have a handful of days left in the
- 50:31month, but impressive to even be in that, in that realm.
- 50:35You know who's third? I'm tired of guessing.
- 50:43I don't know. I mean, take a guess.
- 50:47Batting average King. King of batting average.
- 50:54No. Just like Ted Williams?
- 50:56No. What do you think about an
- 50:57average? You think Elisa Rice?
- 50:59No. I told you I was done guessing.
- 51:04Come. On there's one guy that you
- 51:07should know right now that you should be guessing Tony.
- 51:10There we go 3rd 344 for Tony Gwynn.
- 51:13That's a minimum of 400 ABS of course, in the month of June.
- 51:15But talk about some, some company for Brian Reynolds.
- 51:19He's having a heck of a month this month again, entered
- 51:25Wednesday. He's hitting well, these stats
- 51:31are a little Why does it say he has a 360 average this month if
- 51:36I just said he's hitting 347? Did my man just go 5?
- 51:40Oh, right, right. No, no, no, no, no.
- 51:41The 340. That's right.
- 51:42The 347 refers to his career average in June.
- 51:48This year. In June, he's hitting 366 home
- 51:52runs, 16 ribbies, 15 runs scored in 22 games entering today.
- 52:01The unfortunate thing for Mr. Bryan Reynolds and I, I was
- 52:04curious because I'm like, OK, we've see we see guys like this
- 52:08just absolutely tear it up. How do they respond once the
- 52:11calendar turns? He.
- 52:12Has a terrible career. July doesn't.
- 52:14He, Brian Reynolds, is a lifetime 232 hitter in the month
- 52:19of July. So hopefully, for his sake and
- 52:22for the Pirate's sake, as we mentioned, I mean, they're
- 52:25technically in the hunt. They're only two games.
- 52:27No, you know what? I'm going to remove the
- 52:29technically. They're in the hunt.
- 52:30They're. In the hunt.
- 52:32According to this year, they are in the hunt.
- 52:34At a whopping 39 and 41, they're two games back in the division
- 52:39or in the wild card race, I should say.
- 52:43So hopefully, for their sake, for the team's sake, he can
- 52:46maybe ward off the July scaries and and keep this thing rolling.
- 52:51Because wouldn't it be a sight to see the Pirates pushing it
- 52:58down the stretch with Skins, with Jones, with Kelly?
- 53:01It's true. It's true.
- 53:05Don't make me do it. Oh no, this is normally playing
- 53:11when you've. Ever.
- 53:11No, I'm kidding. I'm just kidding.
- 53:13I don't have a rant. I'm just excited for the Pirates
- 53:17again. We need our mind you, of the
- 53:19three of us, me, you and our good friend Ryan Ripken, I think
- 53:22I was one of the only, I think I was the only one of the three to
- 53:28have any sort of respect for the pirates.
- 53:29So. I like what they're.
- 53:31Doing I don't know how you sleep at night, but I.
- 53:33Don't think they're there. I'm on record as as as being a
- 53:36believer. For them to get there, Stephen
- 53:39Quan Quan. Are we a believer in Stephen
- 53:45Quan? Yes.
- 53:47Yes. OK, so hear me out.
- 53:50It was brought to my attention the other day what he's doing
- 53:55outside of the batting average arena, like he's hitting 385
- 54:00entering Wednesday. We know that he's just racking
- 54:04up hits. We know that that's what he
- 54:06does. But did you know he's slugging
- 54:12563? He's got a he's got a ten O 6
- 54:15OPS. Yeah, A187 OPS Plus and I get
- 54:21it. I know, I know.
- 54:22He's only had just over 200 ABS He's he missed How many?
- 54:28What do you miss? Like 30 games or something
- 54:29missed. 26. Yeah, good chunk of games, I get
- 54:33that. But it's impressive nonetheless.
- 54:37And if he can stay healthy the remainder of the year, it's
- 54:39going to be it's going to be no different than any other season
- 54:42we see from a guy that misses this is a a a little chunk of
- 54:46time so. Yeah, I mean, I I saw that there
- 54:52there was like a philosophy change with the Guardians and
- 54:56they were talking to him about just adding some more velocity
- 55:02to his swing, like trying to swing harder and and less of
- 55:08like trying to just put the ball in play.
- 55:11Let's just like actually hit like let's actually let it eat.
- 55:16So the launch angle has gone up. The balls that he's squaring up
- 55:20have gone up. Obviously ball in the air is is
- 55:24starting to become more of a thing.
- 55:26And what's insane to me, which doesn't even make sense, is that
- 55:31his strikeout numbers are going down.
- 55:34He's striking out less. How does that work?
- 55:40How does that I think he, I think I saw he's striking out at
- 55:43a 6% clip compared to a nine percent last year.
- 55:49He's got a 94.8% contact rate. There you go, 6%.
- 55:54That's stupid. That's a stupid thing that
- 55:58doesn't make sense. How are you allowed to start
- 56:01swinging harder, start trying to lift the ball more?
- 56:06And your numbers are getting better, then your strikeout
- 56:10numbers are going down. What a robot.
- 56:16Is this, and I'm asking you this because you've like you've
- 56:21worked with hitters you've worked with like the mechanics
- 56:23of, of swings and, and this and that.
- 56:27Do we think for a guy like Stephen Quan that this is this
- 56:32is him maybe unlocking what was within or do we think that this
- 56:39is him just changing approach and it just happens to be
- 56:43working really, really well? Like, do we think Stephen Quan
- 56:46was, was this guy that just had this power the whole time, but
- 56:50up until this point, he was just so focused on bat to ball,
- 56:54contact, contact, contact? I think it's approach because
- 56:59like we, we heard all the stories about like Ichiro, like
- 57:06anyone that played with Ichiro was like when he took BP, he
- 57:09could leave the yard whenever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
- 57:14People talked about if he, if Ichiro was in the Home Run
- 57:17Derby, he would win because he's got like this like like smaller
- 57:23athletic energy that just seems to be limitless.
- 57:27And then he's able to access this like extra tank of power.
- 57:34But I think it is approach his barrel percentage for Quan that
- 57:38is is up from 1.1% last year up to 2.1, which is still it's
- 57:44still below league average by the way.
- 57:47So like I'm just saying it's climbing for him.
- 57:51The exit velocity is not great. Like the league average exit
- 57:55velocity is 88.5. He's at 86.
- 58:00So it's not like, and he's suddenly become more powerful,
- 58:06but he started to figure out that approach a little bit more.
- 58:10His launch angle has gone up from 10% to 13% and the numbers
- 58:14are going with it. The expected batting average
- 58:16from last year was 282. It's now at 3:30.
- 58:20So it's just the way he's going about his ABS, it's the way
- 58:29it's, I don't understand this. It just it's most of these are
- 58:34contradictory. When one goes up, the other goes
- 58:37down. It's crazy to see that both are
- 58:40going up at the same time. I really don't get that.
- 58:47I was trying to find, I think he started to, it was in his in the
- 58:53zone contact. The chase percentage this year,
- 59:00here's where it was, the chase percentage last year was 21%.
- 59:05It's down now down to 18%. So he's chasing less.
- 59:08But here's what's crazy, the chase contact percentage, so
- 59:13this is swinging at a ball outside of the zone and making
- 59:16contact was at 72% last year. It's up to 82% this year.
- 59:23So now we're talking about plate coverage.
- 59:27Now we're talking about squaring baseballs up more often and and
- 59:33swinging more often. And that's what the guardians
- 59:36have asked him to do. Let's let you eat more and we'll
- 59:41accept the consequences of more strikeouts.
- 59:44I don't think they knew that he was going to start striking out
- 59:47less. Well, that chase sense.
- 59:50That chase contact percentage you're talking about is
- 59:52interesting because I would you, you would have to imagine that
- 59:56that does wonders for your confidence when you're able to
- 1:00:00make contact out of the zone you're going.
- 1:00:04I'm having to reach for this and I'm still doing what I'm doing
- 1:00:09when it's in the zone. Everyone in this stadium knows I
- 1:00:14can hit for contact, but now that I've changed my approach,
- 1:00:18I'm going to eat like that. The This kid's confidence right
- 1:00:22now just has to be. Through the roof right now.
- 1:00:25I mean, he's hitting in the zone, out of the zone, just
- 1:00:28everything. Again, just for perspective, the
- 1:00:31league average for with percentage is 24%.
- 1:00:36He is at 5% this year. That's disgusting.
- 1:00:41Like the bats of ball skills. It went from I'm just never
- 1:00:46going to strike out and I'm OK hitting a weak contact round
- 1:00:50ball to now you're lifting the ball, now you're hitting it out
- 1:00:56of the yard. Now your your slug is going up
- 1:01:00and it's like and you're swinging more often.
- 1:01:04I don't understand. This doesn't make sense.
- 1:01:07You said 5% with rate. 5% with rate.
- 1:01:12In today's game. Where the league average is 24%.
- 1:01:18With the arms that these guys are seeing every single night,
- 1:01:24pitching is better arguably than it's ever been, more
- 1:01:28challenging, more. But there's more deceit, There's
- 1:01:36more manipulation of these balls.
- 1:01:38Like the the fact that 5%, I cannot wrap my head around that.
- 1:01:45Yeah, also, I see this video not to.
- 1:01:49I'm not going to. I'm not definitely not going to
- 1:01:51take any way anything away from what Kwan's doing, but I sent
- 1:01:55you this video. I'm not going to dive into it
- 1:01:58too deep. People need to check out what
- 1:02:01the offensive numbers have done in Cleveland.
- 1:02:05The wind tunnels. Apparently they removed a
- 1:02:08section of the stadium that is open things up.
- 1:02:13It was the, IT was the shipping containers up in right field
- 1:02:19where apparently, and I'd have to look deeper into this.
- 1:02:22I again, well documented on this podcast, I'm a big conspiracy
- 1:02:26guy. I, I can't say that I'm fully on
- 1:02:29board yet 'cause I don't know enough.
- 1:02:30So I'm going to be a, I'm going to be a reasonable conspiracy
- 1:02:33guy here. I'm not going to go unhinged.
- 1:02:36But from the little that I've seen, it's interesting.
- 1:02:39You remove the shipping containers, you, you allow that
- 1:02:42airflow, whereas previously when those shipping containers were
- 1:02:45there, you're obviously prohibiting that from happening.
- 1:02:50It's interesting. Everyone called very
- 1:02:52interesting. Here's The thing is that they
- 1:02:53went from like bottom 3, not bottom third, like bottom 3IN
- 1:02:58offensive production in Cleveland last year to like top
- 1:03:03five this year. But everyone called me crazy
- 1:03:08because everyone's no one talks about the short porch in New
- 1:03:10York in the old stadium. No one talked about it.
- 1:03:15And I've said to everyone the dimensions are the same as far
- 1:03:20as outfield goes. They brought in the backstop,
- 1:03:21obviously, but the dimensions are the same in New York as the
- 1:03:25last stadium. But the concourse is being more
- 1:03:29open, letting more wind in has just pushed numbers through the
- 1:03:34roof. You're see you're going to see
- 1:03:37this more often. One of my good friend Brett, you
- 1:03:41met Brett. He was on way back.
- 1:03:43Please don't go back and listen back then, but he was in early,
- 1:03:47early with us on a podcast. He played at ASU.
- 1:03:50He's played in the big leagues for 6-7 years.
- 1:03:53He talked about how Houston would all their AC would blow
- 1:03:59out. In Houston, when the AC turned
- 1:04:03on and the roof was closed, everything was blowing out to
- 1:04:06center field. There's little things that
- 1:04:11stadiums do that I don't think fans pay attention to.
- 1:04:14And the removal of these shipping crates has absolutely
- 1:04:18opened up doors for Cleveland. Well, I would be interested to
- 1:04:21see like, sure, we can look at Cleveland's offensive numbers as
- 1:04:25a whole, but I would be interested to see like what the
- 1:04:28offense offensive production like per game like over the
- 1:04:33course of the season to or like year to date basically of both
- 1:04:38teams. Because.
- 1:04:39Yeah, I would. You would have a lot, I feel
- 1:04:42like a lot more evidence to stand on, a lot more ground to
- 1:04:44stand on. If you can look at it being
- 1:04:46like, OK, this isn't just like a weird Cleveland thing.
- 1:04:48This is like just across the board.
- 1:04:53It's improving offensive output with the elimination of the
- 1:04:56shipping containers. It's interesting, very
- 1:04:59interesting. But again, not to take away from
- 1:05:02what Quan's doing, because Quan, this is stupid.
- 1:05:04This is stupid. It doesn't make any sense.
- 1:05:11It's crazy that it's like it's literally like a picture saying
- 1:05:14I'm going to throw like I I'm going to, I throw 102, but I'm
- 1:05:18going to try and throw 96 instead.
- 1:05:21And they start getting more strikeouts like you, you.
- 1:05:25These numbers are not supposed to go up and down at the same
- 1:05:28time. One is the opposite.
- 1:05:29What he's doing is ridiculous. It's crazy.
- 1:05:35Let's switch gears here just very briefly, because I think
- 1:05:39when I put these in our notes for the for the rundown, I I
- 1:05:44feel I recall the conversation we had recently about Louise
- 1:05:47Robert and carrot crochet. No, like, didn't we I?
- 1:05:49Don't think we covered so much. Well, I think we we did.
- 1:05:56We did because I remember talking I I remember sharing my
- 1:05:59thoughts on crochet about him being a guy where it's like like
- 1:06:05similar to a a Montgomery or was it Montgomery we were talking
- 1:06:10about? Maybe it was Montgomery we were
- 1:06:12talking about. I swear we talked about crochet
- 1:06:14and Louise Robert. But all I'd say either way,
- 1:06:19they're still making headlines. They're making more headlines as
- 1:06:22we get closer to the trade deadline.
- 1:06:24Them and Mason Miller that that trio seems to be a trio of of
- 1:06:30hot topics hot commodities do what are what are our thoughts
- 1:06:36there on on those names being sort of shopped around.
- 1:06:39I think the aggressiveness of the shopping around is lays in
- 1:06:44the hands of the White Sox with Louise Robert and Kerr crochet.
- 1:06:47But the A's, I think are going to be a little more cautious
- 1:06:51with Lisa Miller. Or one would.
- 1:06:53Think, I think the A's asking price is only going to be met or
- 1:06:59the ability to meet by a couple teams.
- 1:07:04I don't think the White Sox are in much of A position to really
- 1:07:07be able to negotiate too much. You might as well get get rid of
- 1:07:11these guys while their value is what it is.
- 1:07:16I the, the first thought that came to me was the Mariners with
- 1:07:23the whatever that word is, I can't find it with the idea that
- 1:07:31Louise Robert is is able to slide to right.
- 1:07:36Right field is kind of a hole. I, I think Mitch Hanniger has
- 1:07:39been holding it down for most of the time.
- 1:07:41He's below league average hitting wise.
- 1:07:43He's 33. Luke Rayley has been playing a
- 1:07:48lot of left. They brought in Victor Robles.
- 1:07:51It's just there's kind of this revolving door in right field.
- 1:07:56If again, he's willing to play right field, which I think it
- 1:07:59would help him. He's injury prone.
- 1:08:01We haven't seen a full season out of Elouise Robert in a
- 1:08:04while. I think it makes sense.
- 1:08:07And then this stuff with Brian Wu, you know what I mean?
- 1:08:10Like the the back end of that rotation kind of needs to be
- 1:08:14bolstered up. He had elbow issues, went on the
- 1:08:17IL. Now he just went on the IL again
- 1:08:18with hamstring. So like, I think if they're
- 1:08:21going to make a run, I could see that man.
- 1:08:25I could see that and imagine. I mean, we just saw Louise
- 1:08:29Robert in Seattle a few weeks ago and I'm pretty sure he hit a
- 1:08:32ball that almost went out of the stadium.
- 1:08:35He went way upper deck left field.
- 1:08:40That's what came to mind for me. And I what's crazy is that I
- 1:08:44didn't realize this, but it made me think that this is going to
- 1:08:49be a new thing. I guess the White Sox are like
- 1:08:52kind of backing off crochet a little bit with with workload.
- 1:08:56Like, yeah, yeah. And I'm like, this is a new
- 1:09:01thing. Yeah.
- 1:09:02I think you're going to start seeing teams do that, where they
- 1:09:04have this piece that they have value in and maybe it's too soon
- 1:09:10before the deadline. Interesting.
- 1:09:14Keep him healthy because if he gets hurt, I mean you're, you
- 1:09:19just shot yourself in the foot anyway.
- 1:09:23And you know, I mean common sense more Indians out there,
- 1:09:27more chances for you to run the ERA or he's a newer.
- 1:09:31Starter too, like or whatever, you know, we've been used to
- 1:09:35seeing him in the bullpen. So, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:40OK, interesting you. Got any teams off the?
- 1:09:44It the Dodgers keep coming to the top for not just me, but it
- 1:09:49just seems to be the consensus right now and it's kind of it's.
- 1:09:54Boring. Yeah, but boring, probably the
- 1:09:57best way to put it. But I would venture to say they
- 1:10:00probably get one of the one of those two, I would think.
- 1:10:04I, I think it would make more sense for the Dodgers to get
- 1:10:09Crochet given their injury situation with the rotation this
- 1:10:15year. But I mean, it's the Dodgers, so
- 1:10:19they'll probably get both. Who knows?
- 1:10:23Last item here before we sort of wrap things up, Edwin Diaz,
- 1:10:28well, we got this in a weekend series to watch.
- 1:10:30Edwin Diaz has opted to begin serving his 10 game suspension.
- 1:10:37He I think he actually started to think he started yesterday.
- 1:10:41So Tuesday, really not much to say here.
- 1:10:46It's just another scenario where there's a lot of Gray area.
- 1:10:51It seems there was not an opportunity for him to wash his
- 1:10:55hands, unlike previous guys we've seen be granted that
- 1:11:01opportunity. It, it just doesn't make any
- 1:11:03sense. There's no, there's no
- 1:11:07continuity when it comes to this stuff.
- 1:11:09It's just case by case, umpire by umpire.
- 1:11:13I, I don't understand. And then you had, what's his
- 1:11:17name? Victoria Carapazza say, he said.
- 1:11:22We've checked thousands of these.
- 1:11:24I know what the feeling is. That was very sticky.
- 1:11:27Like did you see the zoomed in picture?
- 1:11:30Yeah, it looks weird. It was like.
- 1:11:32That that looks awfully pine tarry.
- 1:11:34It looked like, it looked like he wiped his butt.
- 1:11:38Dude. It was like a little bit.
- 1:11:39It was toilet. It looked like toilet paper
- 1:11:41flakes or something. I'm like why is it?
- 1:11:43Why? What is that?
- 1:11:45Yeah. No, doesn't make any sense.
- 1:11:47But look man, like he fell off. Then all of a sudden he came
- 1:11:54back and he started doing well. He he was doing well.
- 1:11:58So it's like, I is there a reason for that?
- 1:12:02As I mean, he's gets checked every time.
- 1:12:04All these guys get checked constantly, especially closers.
- 1:12:08But was this the reason he was able to come back?
- 1:12:13And if he does come back after the suspension and struggle
- 1:12:17again, I'm not going to be surprised.
- 1:12:20He was quoted afterwards saying that he uses the same thing
- 1:12:25always and he was very he was really surprised he was ejected.
- 1:12:29Said dirt and rosin. And sweat.
- 1:12:34Yeah, Carlos Mendoza said he believed Edwin Diaz, but he said
- 1:12:43that it was best for the team if he just began serving the
- 1:12:47suspension immediately. He said we quote, we want to
- 1:12:50move on from it. We don't want this cloud to be
- 1:12:52hanging over the team for too long, which I'm glad I saw that
- 1:12:57because I had the same question. I'm like, well, I mean, that's
- 1:13:00with any sort of innocent guilty scenario where it's like if you
- 1:13:03don't even if you don't even make an attempt to, to make your
- 1:13:07case or to appeal or whatever, like what is that?
- 1:13:09What are you really saying there?
- 1:13:11I mean, I, I guess I get it. Like if you think there's even
- 1:13:15a, a shred of a chance that this was legit and the umpires were
- 1:13:19right, then it's like, why fight it?
- 1:13:21Why push it? Why kick the can down the road?
- 1:13:23Just just go, just go for the suspension now and get it over
- 1:13:28with. And who knows, Like we said it
- 1:13:32realistically, like if you think about it, maybe they're viewing
- 1:13:35this as a thing where it's like, hey, we're only a game and a
- 1:13:37half back. Let's not, let's not push this
- 1:13:40too far down the road. Let's not delay it in case we
- 1:13:43need you as we get closer to the deadline, closer to the home
- 1:13:46stretch, just get it out of the way and we'll come back and
- 1:13:49regroup. That's the biggest thing.
- 1:13:51I think that's the biggest thing.
- 1:13:53The Mets are in a very strange situation and if they start to
- 1:13:57slide before the deadline, guys like Pete, Alonzo, other guys
- 1:14:01may be on the block. But if they can play this way
- 1:14:05and be in the hunt and keep this hot streak going, that changes a
- 1:14:12lot. Maybe your buyers instead of
- 1:14:14sellers. It's a very strange position.
- 1:14:18Did you see that update that said Pete Alonzo would be a good
- 1:14:22fit for the Red Sox if they decide to sell them at the
- 1:14:24deadline? I'm hearing that in the Yankees,
- 1:14:27too. I'm hearing.
- 1:14:28Vlad. Vlad to the Yankees, who is He's
- 1:14:31suddenly changed his mind. I There's certain names you
- 1:14:36don't want in certain uniforms. You know, hey, like hand up.
- 1:14:41I know I've you and I collectively collectively have
- 1:14:45been ragging on Vlad Junior for some time, but you know, I'm
- 1:14:50going to give the kid the benefit of the doubt.
- 1:14:51I read his explanation. It was interesting.
- 1:14:54He said, you know, he said at I'm paraphrasing, but he he was
- 1:14:59something to the effect of I obviously said what I said at
- 1:15:02one point in time that I wouldn't want to would never
- 1:15:06want to play for the Yankees. But he said, which I thought
- 1:15:09this was interesting and this we have to we have to have hope
- 1:15:13that the guys that we watch growing up have a little bit of
- 1:15:18influence here. But he said, I sat down and I
- 1:15:20talked with my dad and I sent again, paraphrasing, but he was
- 1:15:25like, I came to terms with the fact that like this is a
- 1:15:27business and I need to handle myself as a professional.
- 1:15:31And I go, you know what, knowing what we know about Vladdy, Well,
- 1:15:35yeah, yeah, for sure. Like this is long overdue.
- 1:15:37But I'm thinking like maybe that maybe that really was the case.
- 1:15:41And maybe he's not feeding us a line.
- 1:15:42Like maybe he really did sit down with with Vladdy senior and
- 1:15:46maybe dad talked some sense into him.
- 1:15:48It's like, hey, we, we can feel how we want about certain teams,
- 1:15:51but like, you're a professional. Go out there and act like one.
- 1:15:54I, I'm going to go ahead and venture to say or I'm I'm going
- 1:15:57to, I'm going to believe that that's what happened.
- 1:16:00Whether it did or not, I don't know, but I'm going to, I'm
- 1:16:03going to put my faith in in Vladdy Senior there.
- 1:16:09But his kids an idiot. I guess.
- 1:16:14Thanks, Andrew. Andrew in the chat says I've
- 1:16:16stared at Kyle so long in this outfit that the visor now looks
- 1:16:18yellow and the polo now looks green.
- 1:16:20How can you not be romantic about baseball?
- 1:16:22Love that. Thank you.
- 1:16:23Andrew, you're going to need to get your eyes checked.
- 1:16:26Dude, I was thinking about it and I was like, when we're on
- 1:16:31Ryan Ryan Ripken show recently, I have to say Ryan Ripken, you
- 1:16:36know him as you know him as Ryan, but for the people that
- 1:16:39don't know him, Ryan Ripken, friend of the pod.
- 1:16:42When we were on there, I was like, man, I felt, I just felt
- 1:16:44good when we did that episode and I was like, you know why?
- 1:16:48You know why? Because I wasn't wearing this
- 1:16:50stupid garbage bag. I I could be myself a little
- 1:16:55bit, but when I get on here, I got to break free from these
- 1:17:02chains of athletic apparel. I got to break free.
- 1:17:08I got to break free. I can't wait for the day when
- 1:17:10it's over. I'd like for it to be.
- 1:17:12Framed and put up on the wall when you're done.
- 1:17:14Just swap it out with a jersey up here.
- 1:17:17Yeah, Yep. People are like, why do you have
- 1:17:19a like a 15 year old athletics polo?
- 1:17:23That's like peeling. That's a long story.
- 1:17:27OK, last thing before we get out of here and we'll make it quick
- 1:17:29weekend series to watch. I've got the Guardians and the
- 1:17:33Royals. Game one Thursday night, you got
- 1:17:36Ben Lively versus Michael Waka, that's 8:10 PM Eastern.
- 1:17:40Game two, Tristan Mackenzie versus Alec Marsh, that's at
- 1:17:438:10 PM Eastern, Game 3, Tanner Bybee versus Cole Reagan's, 4:10
- 1:17:49PM. That'll be a good one to watch.
- 1:17:51And Game 4, Logan Allen versus Seth Lugo at 2:10 PM.
- 1:17:56That's going to be a good match up, I do believe.
- 1:18:03I did it again unintentionally, and this was the only series
- 1:18:07that I was OK with, so I didn't even look at the other ones.
- 1:18:14Well, Friday night you're going to have to get Apple TV again.
- 1:18:17So we got the Santiago Padres visiting the Red Sox in Boston,
- 1:18:26Randy Vasquez going against Nick Pavetta.
- 1:18:29Game one that is at 4:10 Pacific for my Padres fans Saturday. 710
- 1:18:39for you, you people that live on the right side of the country.
- 1:18:44Saturday game two, we got Michael King going against Z
- 1:18:49Kelly. Who's this guy?
- 1:18:51Zach Kelly. Zach Kelly.
- 1:18:53That'll probably be a thrown together game.
- 1:18:57He's got a 159 ERA. Is he a reliever?
- 1:19:01Yeah, he's pitching well. Oh, all right, cool.
- 1:19:04That's at 1:10 Pacific. And then game three, the final
- 1:19:08game on Sunday, 10:30 Pacific, you've got Waldron going against
- 1:19:12Tanner. How that should be a good one.
- 1:19:15That'd be the one I'd I'd I'd key into.
- 1:19:19By the way, I really, I really don't care for the fact that the
- 1:19:24Padres vibes are hitting the way they are as as they prepare for
- 1:19:29this. I think that's I think that's
- 1:19:31what's going to make it a good series.
- 1:19:32Both teams have been hot lately. I think I saw Sox have been
- 1:19:36eight and two in the last 10. The Padres are seven and three
- 1:19:39in their last ten, again at the time of the recording.
- 1:19:41But both teams are looking good. This is going to be a good
- 1:19:44series. Both are rolling.
- 1:19:48Hey, don't look now, Alex Score even said it himself.
- 1:19:53The Sox are coming for the division.
- 1:19:55You go ahead and laugh all you want, but we know how you feel
- 1:19:59about your beloved Yankees. Oh, I'm I'm about done.
- 1:20:03Orioles are slipping a little bit.
- 1:20:04I'm not saying it's going to happen, but just know that
- 1:20:07that's a possibility. This is worst case scenario for
- 1:20:12you. It's all I must say, why would
- 1:20:14that be worst case scenario for me?
- 1:20:16Because you can be caught in the middle, you're going to come up
- 1:20:18short and you're going to be this weird spot where you didn't
- 1:20:21sell at the deadline, you didn't buy and you missed the
- 1:20:25postseason. If you're making a, run for the
- 1:20:27division in the. They're not making a run
- 1:20:29division. In the East, no.
- 1:20:32Hypothetically, if they do make a run for the division in the
- 1:20:35east, you're making the wild card like you are you saying?
- 1:20:39I yeah, I mean, I think it depends if the Rangers wake up
- 1:20:42in the West. No, you know what I mean?
- 1:20:45If. If they even sniff the division,
- 1:20:48they're they're a wild card team, Yeah, it seems.
- 1:20:51Like, it seems like the Twins and Guardians are always going
- 1:20:53to be in the conversation for one of the two.
- 1:20:57And then the, you know, the Orioles and Yankees are in that
- 1:21:00conversation that you only need one more team in the West to
- 1:21:03step up. And, and the Red Sox are are,
- 1:21:07you know, fighting for that spot.
- 1:21:09All I'm saying is that I you know, you may be stuck in a
- 1:21:12weird spot. Let me enjoy this while it
- 1:21:16lasts. You're right, You're right.
- 1:21:18That's right now. So I'm just pointing out all
- 1:21:20that. Yep, that's where we're at.
- 1:21:23That's all I got my friends. We will see you guys Sunday.
- 1:21:29Yeah, quick note, I'm all done with the multi colored colored
- 1:21:33sleeves. 11 color on each arm. Like one color in this one, one
- 1:21:39color in this one. I don't know what that is, but
- 1:21:42I've seen it more and more and I'm I'm all done there.
- 1:21:48That's all. Have a good weekend.
- 1:21:49Don't go chasing curveballs. Love you all, and as always,
- 1:21:52looking forward to talking more baseball with you guys soon.
- 1:21:54Until next time, stay filthy.
