- 0:13Batch, and you are listening to aggressive negotiations. Hello Win, Welcome from
- 0:25the beaches of Glean Sal I'm just one of your hosts here Matthew rushing on
- 0:29aggressive negotiation that little slice of heaven we call this Star Wars podcast, but
- 0:36with me as he is every single week and looking super spiffy in a great
- 0:42new pair of swim trunks. John Mills, That's right, Mad. Everybody
- 0:46said that I couldn't pull this swimsuit off, and that's why I'm still wearing
- 0:49it because they said I can't and they'll jail me if I do. But
- 0:53I promise you that before the end of this episode, I will. But
- 0:57I'm thrilled to be here because here we are. We've on through our Obi
- 1:00Wan Kenobe series rewatch up to this point. We're coming up on the fifth
- 1:06episode. We've had our highs and lows, we've had some pacing questions,
- 1:10we've had pluses and minuses, and we were excited enough going into this that
- 1:15we decided it was time for another commentary. This time for the fifth episode
- 1:21of the obi Wan series and find out where we are with it. I
- 1:25am so excited about this, and of course, just before we dive into

- 2:00It's fun, okay, a couple of seconds, maybe a minute, and
- 2:05it helps people find our wonderful little slice of heaven that we call Aggressive Negotiations.
- 2:09But without further ado, I think it's time to get into our commentary.
- 2:14John, So what we're gonna do? As always three two one and
- 2:17we go on play, So three two one play all right? Oh,
- 2:25there are scenes in this fictional series that some viewers may find upsetting. So
- 2:31hold onto your butts people. You know, that's an interesting thing. We
- 2:37know the reason that they put disclaimers like that on there. You know,
- 2:40it's I'm not taking a position on it, good, bad, or indifferent.
- 2:46But what I find curious about it is we have watched some pretty intense
- 2:53stuff up to this point. We've watched Obi Wan and dragged across. We
- 2:57know what happened to Vader. We had a flash of him on fire like
- 3:01it's It's interesting because when I see a disclaimer like that, I have an
- 3:06immediate expectation of what is going to go past the level of seeing people trapped
- 3:10in horror in amber like Mosquitos and Jurassic Park. Yeah, you know,
- 3:16what's what's going to take us beyond that level of abstract terror or even you
- 3:22know this intense scene where they're showing the not snow speeders, but speeders coming
- 3:27in and somebody you know, blowing up and everything. I'm like that they've
- 3:30basically just thrown the gauntlet down, even though this wasn't their intent, and
- 3:35said this is going to be super duper something special, not special in a
- 3:39good way, but like something very different in the opening, and so through
- 3:43this whole recap. I remember the first time watching I was like, oh,
- 3:46what is it we're going to see here? Yeah? No, I
- 3:49think that's really well put. And this this season has been full of things
- 3:54like that, and even mentioning the fact that it's all predicated on what happened
- 4:00in Revenge of the Sith, you know, where young lings were killed and
- 4:04Anakin burns to a crisp you know, looks like extra crispy chicken, so
- 4:11murders his pregnant wife. It just you know, I mean, so yeah,
- 4:15absolutely, it just goes to show you, you know, and like
- 4:18the modern myth that it is, there's there's nothing clean about this, right
- 4:24um, in the same way when you read, you know, the Greek
- 4:27mythology. So and here we go with this beautiful establishing shot of Coruscant.
- 4:36I love the fact that the color palette is very reminiscent of Tatoween. Actually,
- 4:46you know where Anakin is from. And what did you think of the
- 4:50d aging here? I was actually surprised that they didn't do more, because
- 4:57they don't really seem to have done a ton of d aging. And I
- 5:01think that you know, that's a choice that you know, you can make
- 5:08and it doesn't really necessarily bother me, but I think it would have been
- 5:12nice maybe to have a little bit more so that we do match them better
- 5:16to what we see in Attack of the Clones, because you know, they
- 5:23are both definitely older men now and you can tell, and so I think
- 5:29it would have been nice. I actually kind of welcomed it, and I'm
- 5:33not saying that just to be contrarian. I kind of welcomed it in this
- 5:38sense that the the effect of it. I would rather they restrain themselves during
- 5:46something like that than have them go too far. The way was gone too
- 5:54far at the beginning of Aquaman that that daging there was, you know that
- 6:00that's an example of going way too far, and so it's um, you
- 6:06know, I found that they had done enough for me. Yeah, I
- 6:12mean I could totally understand that. So we've got the third sister just made
- 6:16the Grand Inquisitor. So she just got a promotion because she's tracked Obi one
- 6:21here to Jabeem. And you know what I love about them using Jabeem is
- 6:27that it's actually from a comic series, from the Clone Wars comic series.
- 6:32Before you know, things got rewritten with the Home War series and a very
- 6:40pivotal battle happened there with Obi Wan Kenobi, and so I love that they're
- 6:46using that. I still seeing the ship land and seeing the scale the ship
- 6:54and seeing them walk off. I don't know if it's a shot selection.
- 6:59I don't know if it's just not scaling it right, but frankly, the
- 7:04effect drives home the fact that I don't see two speeders fitting in there to
- 7:10begin with, right exactly. Yeah, no, and that that still bothers
- 7:14me. Yeah, yeah, there's it's interesting to me that there are so
- 7:19many technical issues with this show, especially when it comes to just things like
- 7:27that that you know shouldn't be an issue. You know, you're making Star
- 7:31Wars and you've been making it for a long time. This should not be
- 7:35difficult. And I think part of the size of the ship too, has
- 7:41to do with the size of the volume, and that this is one of
- 7:46the places where that becomes a real issue because you're limiting yourself and you're hurting
- 7:53yourself because you're not using all of the tricks of the trade to make things.
- 7:59Yes, and that group shot that we just saw, I think lends
- 8:03itself right to what you're talking about, where it feels like they're just standing
- 8:05in a cramped little room. Right. It doesn't feel like they're in a
- 8:09tunneled out base the way that hath Base feels like there's a lot of somewhere
- 8:15to go. This feels like this is one little hole that we have and
- 8:18it's like, eh, Now. I do applaud the choice to spend time
- 8:24with Vader on his bridge as they're going through hyperspace, the feeling of Vader
- 8:30as a pseudo military commander as he was in the Clone Wars, and the
- 8:35way that the camera pushes in in certain shots humanizes that mask in a way
- 8:41that I think is important for this series to work, because Vader's mask,
- 8:46of course, has no expression, So if you're not going to give him
- 8:48dialogue to express what he's thinking or body movement, then you're going to have
- 8:54to use those sort of camera tricks to distort the face and push in a
- 8:58little too close and make it seem like you can read the eyes as it
- 9:01were. And Obi wan here going up and seeing again carving and then all
- 9:07of these lightsabers. I mean, how crazy is this seeing all these lightsabers
- 9:13laying around like this and him going through and looking at these things. I
- 9:22mean, you have the question or all those lightsabers from people who are dead
- 9:26or from people who said, I can't carry this with me, anymortal marking
- 9:28for death, you gotta keep it. Yeah, I was thinking about that
- 9:33too. I remember the first time I saw it, and that knowing that
- 9:37those are probably from some people that died, and that they're also probably from
- 9:43some people who just left their lightsabers because they didn't want the heat that comes
- 9:46with carrying one. And you know him taking the robe too, you know,
- 9:52and there's such a motion that he's able to portray there in those moments.
- 10:00I liked how you called out, we're spending time with Vader on the
- 10:03other side, right, and in much as a scene that reminiscent of the
- 10:09Clone Wars, you know, Anakin standing on the bridge waiting for battle,
- 10:13and so I love it. I love the fact that Obi Wan calls out
- 10:16he doesn't have the patience for a siege, and broken asks how do you
- 10:22know? And then it cuts to Obi Wan training him, and I love
- 10:28seeing this training scene. It's wonderful whether you've seen the Clone Wars, but
- 10:31if you haven't, I think this is pivotal for somebody who hasn't watched the
- 10:35Clone War series, because there are people who haven't, sad as it is,
- 10:39and they wind up really I think that's, you know, going to
- 10:46that flashback does a really good job of really really highlighting the history between Anak
- 10:54and obi Wan beyond the tragic moment that brought us here. Well, it's
- 10:58also where we're going to see just how much Anakin has learned and if he's
- 11:03really learned anything. And I think that's kind of a fascinating place to be.
- 11:11And I love that obi Wan is saying, if we try and fight
- 11:15them, we will not survive. But we don't need to fight them.
- 11:18Echoes episode four, there are alternatives to fighting, and also Echoes episode five,
- 11:24which is it's a holding action to get people off the base. They
- 11:28know they cannot beat the siege. And I think it's even interesting because you
- 11:33have that Empire strikes back. This is episode five here of the siege coming,
- 11:41and this time Vader shows up with a Star Destroyer and some troops,
- 11:45and then you flash forward to Star Wars episode five and Vader shows up with
- 11:48the entire fleet because no, like his goal was nobody's making it off of
- 11:54that stupid ice planet alive, and so you do to speak your point about
- 12:00learning. If you put this context in there, you feel like Vader does
- 12:05learn because the next time he does this, it's, oh, screw that,
- 12:09I'm not showing up on a you know. No, we're killing everything
- 12:11and it's so long as Skywalker's alive, then we'll get Skywalker. Yep.
- 12:16No, I definitely agree with that. And this is a This is an
- 12:20interesting scene in general with how they're going to get in here, because it
- 12:28makes I wonder why they're using you know, this gun to try and get
- 12:35in there instead of it feels like there have to be other ways for them
- 12:39to be able to get in there. Maybe even it seems like a lightsaber
- 12:45can do it. You know, if if Qui Gon can get through the
- 12:48Droid Federation's door or could have gotten through it, you know, couldn't she
- 12:54had just cut this open herself. Yes, I mean, I'm not going
- 13:03to dance around it and try to excuse it. Yes, it's the whole
- 13:07question of Kylo Wren flying at Ray in Rise of Skywalker. Why doesn't he
- 13:16just shoot her? And so you're left there and it's like, maybe there's
- 13:20a reason, but that gunned to call to mind what you're talking about.
- 13:28That gun doesn't make sense. But additionally, what would make the scene make
- 13:35more sense is if you showed some engineering troopers show up and they start cutting
- 13:41through the door or trying to hot wire the thing, and have a line
- 13:43of dialogue somewhere along the way that typically inquisitors don't show off the saber to
- 13:52troops because the troops have all been told that the Force and Jedi are all
- 13:58dead. Isn't it going to make your you know, isn't that going to
- 14:01crack the vaunted training of your troops if they suddenly see people wielding lightsabers in
- 14:05the Force? So who wasn't that a Jed? I think, you know,
- 14:09I don't know. I mean, I'm trying to back into an explanation
- 14:11for it. I love this moment here where Leia says she can help,
- 14:16you know, she's small enough, and you know, Rogan's like no,
- 14:20no, no, no, no no, it's a no, and I
- 14:24Obi one has learned that he can trust Leia, you know. And I
- 14:28think this is also a moment where you mentioned many of times, I think
- 14:33her not actually being somebody who feels like she's ten is a little bit hurtful
- 14:41to the series. You know, this is a place where she could be
- 14:45older and it would really feel older and would have helped. I think that
- 14:50this transmission that we're watching as we as we go through here, we always
- 14:54try to make it so that anybody can can listen along, but we're watching
- 14:58this recording, um, you know bail organa that basically only serves as he
- 15:07just sent a transmission saying I hope you're alive and I hope everything's fine.
- 15:09He can't find out about Leia. And it's like the guy's not thinking here,
- 15:16because if you're sending a message to someone, you're like, oh,
- 15:20you might be dead, so I'd better say the one thing we've all been
- 15:22trying to keep secret for the last decade. Yeah, It's like that's just
- 15:26stupid, and it's and what bothers me is I immediately see it. I
- 15:31see that transmission, and I say, ah, the transmitter is going to
- 15:35be found, Okay, yep, And it's like this it's if I'm honest,
- 15:41it's just lazy because you couldn't find another way for whatever is coming again,
- 15:48we don't know what is by this point, but I'm like, Okay,
- 15:50this is gonna set something up. I don't know what, but something.
- 15:54Look, I might seem unfair, it feels lazy, immediate. I
- 15:58agree. I do love this moment though with Tala as she is confessing what
- 16:06she did that led her to get out of the Empire, and the fact
- 16:11that you know, she didn't realize they were tracking down four sensitives and when
- 16:15she did, then she didn't know what the inquisitors were going to do,
- 16:19and these people ended up dying children even And so that was the moment where
- 16:27she snapped and was like, Nope, not doing this anymore. And you
- 16:30know, she's been fighting to make sure that these things don't continue to happen.
- 16:36And I think that's a really cool story because you know, Star Wars,
- 16:41if we've talked about many times, it is about redemption, right,
- 16:45and her working for redemption in that I think is pretty beautiful. Also pretty
- 16:51cool that Rokean here has a boat cast, so I wonder what Wookie he
- 16:57got that from. Roken feels like a character where in a less crowded series,
- 17:04I would have found out more about this character that I find very intriguing.
- 17:07From the little bits that I see, it feels like they are they
- 17:12either cut his presence back significantly, or they baited the hook just enough because
- 17:19they had plans for something later that probably are not going to come to fruition
- 17:25at this point. And I think it's a shame because he Tala and Roken
- 17:29are legitimately interesting side characters. Yes, and that's cool, but it's frustrating
- 17:38by the same token, this is a really interesting scene to me, you
- 17:49know, And yeah, I'm I think a part of this thing with this
- 17:56episode so far is that this this whole episode seems to be a little bit
- 18:06off kilter and it's pacing. Hold on them, I agree, but in
- 18:10the garage so you can just so No, it's um, it is a
- 18:17little bit off and it's pacing. I think that the it's it's interesting that
- 18:27this conversation that's happening right now is giving us some really interesting stuff about Reva
- 18:34and where she comes from. And I look, I I thought the film
- 18:38language was pretty clear from the beginning. I think we said this earlier.
- 18:42I was like, Okay, that kid's gonna be Riva, you know,
- 18:45in the opening and everything, but then flashing here and seeing Anakin come through,
- 18:52well at Vader come through and killing these kids or at least thinking he
- 18:56killed these kids is interesting because this ups the evil of Vader more. Because
- 19:11as we get these flashes every time we revisit Vader in another ten fifteen years,
- 19:18I'd say you can see the reflection of the times and how desensitized people
- 19:25have become. Because back in the eighties, with the original trilogy, just
- 19:29seeing Vader scarred visage was wild, Oh my gosh. Right, then Vader
- 19:34becomes a sort of like popular pop culture anti hero, embraced for his evil.
- 19:41And I've always maintained that Lucas basically is backed in a corner and he's
- 19:45like, well, I really got to illustrate for everybody that he's actually evil.
- 19:48He's not cool evil, he's not cool, he's not Charles Bronson and
- 19:52death wish. He's actually evil. So children get killed. That is the
- 19:59ultimate no go for anybody to have any sort of like affection for a character.
- 20:04And now we make it intimate, and so it's like that it keeps
- 20:10ratcheting up, and I'd say that it's a reflection of how the audience both
- 20:15wants something more explicit and has become so desensitized to different things that the only
- 20:18way you can make Vaders seem as evil as he needs to seem is to
- 20:22keep ratcheting up. Yeah, the intensity of what he did. Yeah,
- 20:27it's been interesting because I think that this conversation is a really interesting conversation,
- 20:38and but it just there's something about it where the whole thing feels out of
- 20:45place, you know, like I just don't understand exactly. I don't know.
- 20:52I feel like the whole thing needed to be rewritten because it doesn't make
- 20:59sense for them to be having this conversation in this heart to heart, in
- 21:02this way, in this place, with trying what she's trying to do.
- 21:07I agree, I can't. I can't go against that. I think it's
- 21:15interesting to have obi Wan stand there and be this great defender in this moment
- 21:19and see these people making their stand and the you know, as they try
- 21:25to fall back to second position and everything. But even this seems with the
- 21:30fall back to second position and this tactic that they have and obi Wan easily
- 21:34dispatching a Purge trooper, I think that the the problems that the tactic makes
- 21:41even less sense. Yep, it would have made sense if obi Wan was
- 21:45there alone to buy them time to start loading on the ships. There's no
- 21:51like you know what I'm saying, Like, it just seems like this is
- 21:56unnecessarily crowding everybody into a situation they don't need to be in. Yes,
- 22:00well, and especially since you know, there's there only seems to be so
- 22:07much space, there's only so many places they can go, you know,
- 22:12and then you're backing yourselves into the place where you still can't get out of.
- 22:17And so yeah, this whole part just doesn't seem very well thought out.
- 22:25M h. And you know, I think that it's not that it's
- 22:33not well thought out on the part of the rebels, it's not well thought
- 22:36out on the part of the creators of the series. Is I think what
- 22:41we're both arguing and Tala gets, you know, Okay, we're gonna show
- 22:47off her her her coolness here. The unfortunate thing about the droid here fighting
- 22:53alongside her and doing his last stand is you can't help but compare to what
- 23:00K two does in Rogue one, and there's no way it's going to live
- 23:03up to it. We haven't had he hasn't had the arc the K two
- 23:07did, and so we see it more as them just saying, oh,
- 23:12we'll do a K two type thing, and it just doesn't carry the weight,
- 23:18right, doesn't carry the same weight. Yeah, it's you know,
- 23:22it's interesting too because one of the and I love McGregor is so good with
- 23:27the savor, you know everything, all his moves look phenomenal. Here.
- 23:32I think all that's great. I think what's interesting about this moment is that
- 23:40I think Obi One had begun, begun to have some you know, slight
- 23:45feelings for Tala, you know that that they had created a bond in a
- 23:48relationship, and so it's just it's another thing that is being taken away from
- 23:53him. It's another person that's died now because of Anakin, and it's you
- 24:06just feel for the guy. You know, he's just getting his mojo back,
- 24:08and and and then this happens. But again it returns to the question
- 24:17of tactics. They had double blast doors to begin with, and she had
- 24:22a thermal detonator. Why would you wait until the last possible moment. Why
- 24:26would oh god, the doors opening, throw the grenade, blow up,
- 24:30a ton of people, disarray, smog, fog, you see what I'm
- 24:37saying. No, I mean, well, what what I don't understand is
- 24:41why wouldn't you quote unquote put up a fight, let them in, and
- 24:51then allow you know, a thermal detonator to be triggered. You know,
- 24:59when they're right in between, whether whether you're talking about setting up a trap
- 25:03or causing a cave in, even saying okay, we can cause a cave
- 25:07in, It'll take them forever to cut through this. Like again, this
- 25:11is not just armchair quarterbacking everybody, I promise you, this is not a
- 25:17need to bring back yet again the hashtag you know, and the obi wan
- 25:21hate or stop the obi wan hate, whichever one it was we were joking
- 25:23about. And thank you to those who interact on Twitter who caught that hashtag
- 25:30joke. Thank you. But if I can sit here in the midst of
- 25:37this, if anybody can sit in the midst of this and pull that apart
- 25:42and say, well, there's a smarter way to have gone about this,
- 25:48it just doesn't feel right, you know, like it feels I think what
- 25:55comes across here in moments like this with the series is we have moments in
- 26:02each episode where it feels like they have had they added on to something much
- 26:11more elegant than they had before. Makes sense, Yeah, like this feels
- 26:17like it was grown out after they already had something they didn't like. You
- 26:21should start with too much and pair down, you know, measure twice,
- 26:25cut once, and it feels like they you know, measured once and tried
- 26:30to add back on right sort of thing. Yeah. This, this,
- 26:37it's such an interesting thing too, because and I think it it almost would
- 26:44have been even more interesting to have this whole episode be more about, even
- 26:52more so about the battle going on between Anakin and Obi one and if if
- 27:00Anakin's learned anything after all these years. And I think in some ways having
- 27:07Riva here distracts completely from that. And because I think the battle of wills
- 27:17happening back and forth between these two characters who have known each other for so
- 27:21long, it just would have been more interesting without something in the middle.
- 27:30I think that this is interesting to Obi Wan manipulating her. Yeah this,
- 27:37this feels good and right. He knows how to manipulate her. But at
- 27:44the same time, it doesn't feel noble in any way. It feels I
- 27:56don't know, I mean, maybe it is, and I and I wonder
- 27:59too, you know, you say that, but I'm thinking to myself.
- 28:03I think Obi Wan is thinking to himself that he if he can help her
- 28:11get rid of Vader, that he can free her from this obligation she feels.
- 28:18Yeah. By the way, just so you know, like the shortcoming
- 28:22of the volume is really apparent in a shot we just saw where Obi Wan
- 28:26is kneeling and she's walking away and you have the troopers. The perspectives don't
- 28:30line up right right with the troopers the depth and like the depth of the
- 28:34troopers and the angle of the troopers is slightly off from where it needs to
- 28:38be. It feels like they're really trying to force depth and they don't have
- 28:42the camera in the right position for it. But I do appreciate that now
- 28:48that we've snapped back to Anakin and Obi Wan with this moment where we want
- 29:00to teaching him your need for victory blinds you, I think that is one
- 29:04of the best lines that somebody's delivered about what is broken Invader and Anakin.
- 29:11Yeah, I agree, which I think that the beauty of that is the
- 29:18way in which it plays into Anakin as a child, right who grew up
- 29:27in poverty, who you know, his mother and him are treated horribly and
- 29:33so there is this part of him that needs to win, that wants to
- 29:37win and it's a character flaw. Yes, and it's a it's a known
- 29:48character flaw. I also the ease with which Leiah defeats the counterprogramming of Lola,
- 30:00why even bother having it? Why not just have something short out and
- 30:03Laya has to climb in there. You circumvent the whole need for the lower
- 30:07thing and it well, and it would have been I think it would have
- 30:12been more interesting have her have to destroy her toy, right to make a
- 30:21sacrifice, Yeah, that's fine, or just have her not I mean,
- 30:26because they want to do any need it for them to be able to find
- 30:29them in the first place. But so here's the question with these bay doors
- 30:33opening, where they're only like there was no plan to be like, hey,
- 30:37you know, just in case the bay doors open, just like fire
- 30:40a couple of warning shots that they're afraid to take off, or have some
- 30:44tie fires flying people already all on the ship waiting for the doors to open.
- 30:48That's a great question, Matt, and one that it answers hand.
- 30:53Well, I'm going to break this down for you in twelve parts as to
- 30:57why it happens that way. As you know, am, as you know,
- 31:00we run by the drop transmitter that we know the bail. Oh look,
- 31:03Vader is walking down the hall right now, and I think this is
- 31:07a really effective you know shot, following him along as I artfully dodged trying
- 31:12to explain why they're not on the ship already, and Vader walking out and
- 31:17grabbing the ship. This is a great moment. I love this moment.
- 31:22I hate seeing the other ship in the background because as I'm watching this,
- 31:27I go, oh, I don't even know what they're gonna do to get
- 31:30out of this, and it kind of bugs, kind of bugs. Well,
- 31:36and I would say too, the frustrating part about this all is just
- 31:41all of the effects here are not great. You know. Um, I
- 31:48think I would agree frustrating part, although I do love seeing him hold the
- 31:56ship there, which reminds me of the Force unleashed bringing down a Star Destroyer,
- 32:01so pretty cool. I enjoy seeing Oi Wan beat Anakin because Anakin just
- 32:10gets too aggressive. It reminds me actually of Batman begins. Yes, you're
- 32:16sacrificed a killing blow, sure footing for a killing blow, and it shows
- 32:22that a Jedi isn't just their lightsaber. They can fight pretty darn well,
- 32:25even against another lightsaber, which I think plays well into this coming moment where
- 32:31Vader is sitting there breathing and looking up and Riva thinks she has the upper
- 32:36hand, and I would argue, you see, Vader has learned something in
- 32:45the way that this fight is about to go down between the two of them
- 32:47because she comes in, and a whole lot of sins of the episode up
- 32:54to this point we're forgiven by me. When she swings and saber stops and
- 33:01Vader's just like, oh, oh, it's cute. You think you can
- 33:07do this. Yes, and he doesn't even need a saber, just like
- 33:09obi Wan didn't need a saber beat him. It gives you a sense of
- 33:13proportionality, yes, well, And you know, one of the things I
- 33:16also think that it does a really good job of here is that it actually
- 33:20shows you how weak the inquisitors are. They are not that strong in the
- 33:27force. They are not They're only as strong as they want them to be,
- 33:30right exactly. And you know the Emperor and Vader have kept them that
- 33:34way on purpose, you know. And so the fact that he just basically
- 33:38dismantles her completely here is I think phenomenal. I mean, it's it's one
- 33:46of the best parts of the episode is to watch him just you know,
- 33:51take her apart so quickly. And I love the fact that he takes her
- 33:58apart so quickly, and it's the ultimate sign of disrespect. He breaks the
- 34:01two sabers apart, and he throws her a saber, and he's like,
- 34:06okay, let's have some fun. Sure, And although you know it's it's
- 34:14so emphasizes the fact that he's toying with her, which I think is great,
- 34:19while also outlining that he is so pompous. Everybody's got a puncher's chance.
- 34:27Yeah, Mike Tyson lost against Buster Douglas because he didn't take it seriously,
- 34:30so you know I will. I'll say too, though that one of
- 34:34the things that I don't love about this fight sequence is the way in which
- 34:39it shot. There are too many places where they're trying to be up close
- 34:44and personal to the action and they're they're kind of missing some of the movements,
- 34:51and then her kind of being on the ground and kind of moving in
- 34:54that way to try and nick gate his you know, upper body strength and
- 35:00everything all of that. It's just the way it shot. It doesn't work
- 35:05as well as it could have. You had somebody who really understand how to
- 35:08shoot this type of action sequence. I think they were more concerned with getting
- 35:15her to the point where they could recreate a child looking up than anything else.
- 35:21And then inexplicably, the Grand Inquisitor shows up. Oh he's still alive.
- 35:28Well, it takes a lot to kill somebody in the Star Wars universe
- 35:30these days. John being run through with a lightsaber isn't what it used to
- 35:35be. It does. Darth Maul came back from being cut in half,
- 35:39true, and that was pretty tough. But him walking back in at this
- 35:45moment with no reference to anything or how he lived or anything like that,
- 35:51I immediately say, oh, well, she's going to survive this because he
- 35:53says revenge does wonders. Yes, It's like, oh, okay, well
- 35:58she's not dead, did you. I mean, I have that reaction right
- 36:01now. I had that reaction the first time I won. I figured that
- 36:06would probably happen. I think, like you mentioned earlier, when you have
- 36:12when you can see the ship in the background, the show is showing you
- 36:16its hand, And I think the frustrating part about that is is that that's
- 36:23just not great writing. You You want to keep audiences on their toes guessing,
- 36:35not give them everything they need to know it what's going to come next,
- 36:43and then having the hyper drive be down. You mean you got on
- 36:50the ship take a shot with a bad hyper drive. We had two of
- 36:52them. At least have them take a shot from the star destroy or where
- 37:00they say, oh, no, the hyperdrive has been damaged. That's episode
- 37:05one basics right there, because the Nabu ship takes a hit and Rick Olie
- 37:10says, oh, the hyperdrive is leaking. At least have it be a
- 37:16direct result of damage. We see them take yes, and not just hey,
- 37:22you know it's bad. You would think that the one thing they would
- 37:25make sure to keep running a tiptop shape at all times would be the hyperdrive.
- 37:31Again, much like Reva now finding this thing. Okay, Reva survived
- 37:36as we knew she would, and she presses the thing. I'm like,
- 37:39oh, it just I don't want to rag on the show. I don't
- 37:46there's it's still it's it's interesting. It just it's it's just cluttered with these
- 37:57these things that it doesn't need to have in it. The thing, well,
- 38:00I think that the thing about it is is that it just feels clumsy,
- 38:07right, I think that's the writing just feels clumsy. It doesn't feel
- 38:13refined, you know. And I think after seeing two seasons of The Mandalorian
- 38:22and having seen a whole season of and Or and all the shows that we
- 38:29got with the Clone Wars and the Bad Batch and Rebels, where you know,
- 38:34we know what great Star Wars writing looks like. You know, I
- 38:38think that you know, you get to this and it just is a little
- 38:44bit frustrating because you know that it can be better, and it should be
- 38:49better, because this is your signature character. I want to get away from
- 38:55words like better because I really think episodes like this, we know this was
- 39:01originally developed to be a movie and then it got stretched out. And I
- 39:06think what it is is that we can see where it was stretched out.
- 39:10We can see I think the reason we're trying so hard to like it and
- 39:15not rag on it is because we can see if it had retained its two
- 39:19hour structure or two and a half hour structure, even we can see where
- 39:24it would have been incredible, and instead they's it's like taffy. If you
- 39:32stretch the taffy too much, it's not as I don't know, it loses
- 39:37something. I think that the thing is with this show is that I can
- 39:45see the bones of having a really great show. Yes, And I think
- 39:52that's why I'm so frustrating. You know, Even as we were talking,
- 39:57one of our good listeners tweeted at us and Kimberly, thanks so much for
- 40:02always being such a great listener. And she mentioned that it's been kind of
- 40:07challenging, you know, to listen to the show over the last two and
- 40:10she hopes we find more we like in the next ones. And you know,
- 40:15and I just I tweeted back in this saying, the reason that this
- 40:21show is so frustrating to me is because I don't know if there's a bigger
- 40:24obi Wan fan out there, right, And that's why I'm frustrated. And
- 40:30and and I think McGregor is phenomenal in the series. I think Hayden Christensen
- 40:37is just incredible in the series. I think acting across the board for the
- 40:42most part has been excellent in the series, even though we've had some criticisms
- 40:45I think of Riva, but overall, there's so much that I do like
- 40:52about the series. So when it it doesn't live up to the potential that
- 40:58the series has, I think that's what it frustrates me because there is a
- 41:02ton of potential. Let me throw something absolutely insane out there. Let me
- 41:08ask you, do you think this series is better if it's a twelve part
- 41:15thirty minute series, because it gives them more of an opportunity to break the
- 41:17story into chunks that are less clunkily put together, because a lot of the
- 41:25theories that people have put together. And I see this because like you're saying
- 41:30about the bones, I think that there's a version to edit together out of
- 41:35this. I haven't watched any of the fan edits. One of them,
- 41:38from what I understand, is very dismissive of Reva's whole arc, and I
- 41:45you can't get away from it. It's part of the story. It's part
- 41:50of the story. I like Reva's arc. Do I like how it's unfolding
- 41:54so far? Yes? And no. I look at this and I think,
- 42:00you know, was there a way they could have broken this so that
- 42:01it was like a Clone Wars micro series in live action, so that Clone
- 42:07Wars. I think if it had been hour long episodes would have suffered a
- 42:12lot of the same sort of problems. But because they were all half hour
- 42:16episodes, it was a little challenge, tell the leanest thing possible and then
- 42:21build on it. And I wonder what this rewatch I'm looking at it.
- 42:24I'm thinking, I think there's maybe like a half hour out of time version
- 42:29of this that's that could be really engaging and really interesting. Yeah, I
- 42:34don't know. There is a you know, a version of this that I
- 42:38have downloaded and I haven't got a chance to watch. It cuts the series
- 42:42down to two hours and twenty nine minutes, and I would be fascinated to
- 42:49see, you know what that looks like. I don't know, you know,
- 42:55as we get to episode six coming up next and we finish out the
- 43:00series, you know, I again, I I don't want anybody to think
- 43:04that I'm just trying to take pot shots at something. Um, I think
- 43:07more than anything, you know, I am a lover of this character.
- 43:14I can't imagine anybody loving what we won more than I do. And you
- 43:17know, because what I what I wanted. My expectation coming in was for
- 43:25this to be the best thing that they did, because I felt like the
- 43:30character deserved it, and I think it I don't think anybody would argue with
- 43:36that, and so for the to not do that, it was frustrating and
- 43:43so, but there are still parts of this that I really do love and
- 43:45so, and I'm you know, that's actually going to come up there in
- 43:52a season in episode six. But John, you know, before we get
- 43:57out of here, i'd i'd love for you to just kind of let,
- 44:00you know, let people know when you're not, you know, chomping down
- 44:04on sir Nerf Nuggets and uh, kicking it back with some Karelian whiskey.
- 44:08Where can people find you? Nerf Nuggets sounds disgusting, It's gonna go on
- 44:13the record. That sounds that sounds like Rocky Mountain oysters. That sounds like
- 44:16something you just shouldn't meet. Um. But if you want to find me
- 44:23for some insane reason, usually I'm out there on the internet occasionally, uh,
- 44:29further furthering the training of Master Rushing and showing him the true path out
- 44:32there, the one that he should follow. You can find me as Kessel
- 44:36Junkie on your social network of choice K S S L j U N K
- 44:38I E. I'm a lot of fun to follow, I think on or
- 44:44connect with. I should say I had the word follow. I'm a lot
- 44:46of fun to connect with on letterbox. I think and on Twitter. I
- 44:50love to make stupid jokes, so you know, come on now and you
- 44:53can find me right here on the network, co hosting a show called house
- 44:58Lights blah blah, Works of Rector Is blah blah, Different Combinations blah blahs
- 45:01or Simradellent Darren Moser, and of course I have appearances on The six o
- 45:07two Club and its sub shows Assembling, Avengers and Snyder Cuts The six or
- 45:14two Club over on TFM, which is hosted by one legendary host who has
- 45:20the wisdom to bring me on every so often, and that's you, Jedi
- 45:24Master Rushing. So where else can people find you? Well, it is
- 45:28me and I love when you do visit us over there. Of course,
- 45:30you can find me all over social media, and I would love to connect
- 45:35with you on the same way that John I. You know, don't follow
- 45:37me, connect with me. I'd love to get a chance to talk to
- 45:39you about things, whether it's on Instagram, Letterbox, Vero, Twitter,
- 45:45all the same name Matt Rushing zero two. Here on the network. You
- 45:47can also find a show I did with Drea Kaufman as we talked through every
- 45:51single chapter the Harry Potter series one chapter to time, and when I'm not
- 45:57in the six o two club on the TFM network, you can find me
- 45:59doing a bunch of other shows there. I've got Literary Treks, the Orb
- 46:04Warp five, the Artificial Tango, and Saddle Up is actually firing up here
- 46:08again because we're gonna be talking about Strange New Worlds season two, so I
- 46:14hope you'll check that out. But John, I think it's time to get
- 46:16back to the Temple because they are having a buffet with nerf nuggets and some
- 46:24bant mistakes and all sorts of great things. So I think it's time we've
- 46:30closed these negotiations. Are there vegans in Star Wars? I wonder Master Rushing
- 46:37negotiations are closed. Join the Revolution, Join the Nerd Party.
