- 0:10Well, good morning, everybody, and welcome to another edition of the ABA Coffee In The Park.
- 0:15My name is Cam Milliken, and I am here with my co-host extraordinaire, Jennifer Herrick.
- 0:20Good morning, Jennifer.
- 0:21Good morning, Cam.
- 0:23On this smoky days.
- 0:25I know.
- 0:26For those of us who live in Alberta, today is a little bit smoky out there.
- 0:30The forest fires are doing their thing.
- 0:31They are.
- 0:32And the air is a little, like you say.
- 0:35But you know what?
- 0:35Wind'll come, it'll blow over, who knows?
- 0:37But anyway, yeah.
- 0:38Well, this is what we live in now.
- 0:40It is.
- 0:40We live in Alberta.
- 0:41And how are you doing?
- 0:42Doing good?
- 0:42I'm good.
- 0:43So for those who live in Edmonton or in Alberta, today's not a great day for Edmontonians.
- 0:49Well, the Oilers lost.
- 0:52Yes.
- 0:52We had a bit of a trouncing last night.
- 0:55A bit of a trouncing.
- 0:56I still have faith in my team.
- 0:58They're going to do this.
- 0:58I mean, it's just a minor setback.
- 1:00No big deal.
- 1:01But it wasn't good last night.
- 1:03Wasn't pretty.
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:03So, but the city is still buzzing.
- 1:05So it's kind of awesome.
- 1:06Jennifer, we are coming to you live, folks, from The Wall Coffee Roasters in the heart of beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 1:16That's right.
- 1:17So if you hear some noises in the background, coffee machines whirring, people talking, kids screaming.
- 1:21No kids today.
- 1:22No, no kids.
- 1:23Just businessmen being very loud.
- 1:25That's what's going on at the coffee shop today.
- 1:27Jennifer, tell us about some very important people.
- 1:30We would like to thank our gold corporate sponsors, which include the Myshak Group of Companies, Genics, Parkland County, and Bow Valley Credit Union.
- 1:38Yeah, without them, we would not be able to do what we do.
- 1:41So thank you very much.
- 1:42We appreciate it.
- 1:43Jennifer, I'm excited this week.
- 1:46Oh, there's so much going on this week.
- 1:47Are you excited?
- 1:48I am very excited.
- 1:49It's the golf tournament.
- 1:50It's the golf tournament this week.
- 1:52The ABA, Acheson Business Association, golf tournament.
- 1:56Yes.
- 1:56Which sells out, by the way, in 24 hours.
- 1:59Yes.
- 2:0024 hours.
- 2:01This golf tournament sells out with a waiting list.
- 2:03With a huge waiting list.
- 2:05With people phoning saying, look, what can you do to get me it?
- 2:07Nothing.
- 2:08You know you blew it, you're not in.
- 2:09So next year, start early.
- 2:12Like, you know what's going to happen next year?
- 2:13People are going to be up all night at their computers.
- 2:16Remember the days when you had to get tickets for concerts?
- 2:18Like Ticketmaster.
- 2:20That's right.
- 2:20It's going to be so awesome.
- 2:21And people are going to phone us, I didn't get in, the computer crashed.
- 2:24I'm sorry.
- 2:25Or they'll start lining up outside the ABA door.
- 2:27Wouldn't that be something?
- 2:28No, that would be.
- 2:29Because I'll sell hot dogs and make cash.
- 2:31So I think that would be really great.
- 2:33And I'm excited about that.
- 2:34And that leads us in to our guest.
- 2:37I'm so excited today about our guest.
- 2:40This is awesome.
- 2:41Because this guest will be attending the ABA Golf Tournament on Friday.
- 2:46They're actually special guests.
- 2:48They are special guests.
- 2:49Yes.
- 2:50They're doing something very special at the golf tournament.
- 2:52I know.
- 2:53Never done it at our golf tournament.
- 2:54Not at ours.
- 2:55At others.
- 2:55I think he'll tell us they've done it at others, but never at ours.
- 2:58And if you are an Edmontonian, if you are an Oilers fan, if you've ever been to Roger's Place, you're going to know who these guys are.
- 3:07You sure are.
- 3:08Amazing.
- 3:08So Jennifer, take it away.
- 3:10Our guest today is Matt Laird with The Brasstactics.
- 3:15Matt, welcome.
- 3:17Good morning, everybody.
- 3:18How you guys doing?
- 3:20Man, this is incredible to have you here.
- 3:22The Brasstactics.
- 3:24Now, we better tell everybody what that...
- 3:25Matt, tell us, who are the Brasstactics?
- 3:28Brasstactics, we are a brass band located here in Edmonton.
- 3:33We are, I guess you could call us a New Orleans style brass band.
- 3:37Not your average, you know, classical brass.
- 3:41We play everything from ACDC to Dr.
- 3:44Dre.
- 3:47You guys are amazing.
- 3:49Tell us all the instruments in the band, so people get the idea.
- 3:52Yeah, the way I've structured the band is we have trumpets, saxophones, sousaphone, which is a tuba.
- 3:58We can go in depth about that.
- 3:59Yes, yes.
- 4:01And then we have trombone and we've got drums.
- 4:04So we've got percussion with toys and then we've got a snare drum and we've got a bass drummer.
- 4:08Right.
- 4:09And at the games, you're like a mini marching band.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:12You go around the concourse level before the game.
- 4:14Completely mobile.
- 4:15Yeah.
- 4:16And then when the game starts, you're up in your perch up there and you just go after it.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:21It's unbelievable.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:23If folks, if you've never heard...
- 4:25Are you guys...
- 4:26Well, you're online, right?
- 4:27Do you have clips online and stuff like that?
- 4:29Oh, yeah.
- 4:30Oh, they do.
- 4:30Yeah.
- 4:30People need to go see that because I looked at it this morning, but I didn't click on any of the clips.
- 4:34But man, unbelievable.
- 4:36It's amazing.
- 4:36It is.
- 4:37It's unbelievable.
- 4:37So let's start from square one.
- 4:38Let's start from square one.
- 4:40The question we always ask right out of the gate.
- 4:42Matt, where were you born and where did you grow up?
- 4:45I was born here in Edmonton.
- 4:47Well, I was born in Edmonton.
- 4:49On the West End, I was born at The Mis.
- 4:52The Misericordia Hospital.
- 4:53I mean, The Misericordia.
- 4:55Not The Misery.
- 4:56Jennifer, don't look at me like that.
- 4:58Lawyers are already, "oh, he called it The Misery were suing".
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:02So anyway.
- 5:02No, and I grew up on the West End.
- 5:04I was a West End kid my whole life.
- 5:07What high school did you go to?
- 5:09I went to Harry Ainlay on the South Side.
- 5:11Yeah.
- 5:12I know.
- 5:13I know.
- 5:13So there's actually a story of that.
- 5:15I still lived on the West End.
- 5:17Yeah.
- 5:17Yeah.
- 5:17So when I was in junior high, I got to be friends with a friend of mine, and his dad was the music teacher for Harry Ainlay High School.
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:28His name's Rob Spears, greatest music band teacher.
- 5:32Shout out to Rob.
- 5:32Yeah.
- 5:33Rob's amazing.
- 5:35He said, I'll give you a ride to see.
- 5:37He needed tuba players.
- 5:38Tuba players, they're- Okay.
- 5:41We're not gonna- I need to interrupt you for one second, because Jennifer's son is a tuba player.
- 5:46Okay.
- 5:46He is.
- 5:47He is.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:48Just had his big tuba concert.
- 5:50We did have the big concert.
- 5:51Yeah.
- 5:52Anyway.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:52Nice.
- 5:53Nice.
- 5:53So she knows of what you speak.
- 5:55Yeah.
- 5:55He's at St.
- 5:56Thomas.
- 5:57St.
- 5:57Thomas.
- 5:57Okay.
- 5:57Sweet.
- 5:58Yeah.
- 5:58All right.
- 5:59So you went to Ainlay to play tuba.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:01He said he would drive me to school every day, so I took that, and yeah, he needed tuba players.
- 6:06So I went to Ainlay for high school.
- 6:08Okay.
- 6:08What's the Harry Ainlay mascot?
- 6:11Okay.
- 6:11So I actually was the Harry Ainlay mascot as well.
- 6:16Okay Cam! This is blowing my mind.
- 6:17If we had video, you should see Cam's face right now.
- 6:19He is so excited.
- 6:21I ask this question of every person.
- 6:23What was your high school mascot?
- 6:25Some know, some don't, but nobody has ever said, I was the mascot.
- 6:31I was.
- 6:31This is unbelievable.
- 6:33What is the mascot?
- 6:34The Harry Ainlay Titan.
- 6:35So he was like a Titan, like a, yeah.
- 6:39Yeah.
- 6:39I had like a shield and a sword and I had the big.
- 6:43Come on.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:45That's amazing.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:47Okay.
- 6:47I went to Ross Shep.
- 6:48Oh yeah.
- 6:49We were the Thunderbirds.
- 6:50That's right.
- 6:50Yeah.
- 6:50We had like a bird guy walking around, but I like the Titan.
- 6:54Titan's probably slay birds, but anyway.
- 6:56Cool.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:57We got, yeah.
- 6:58No, I like, we did, you know, like for the volleyball team, they had, they would do these, volleyball and basketball were huge at Ainlay.
- 7:06Oh yeah.
- 7:07Yeah.
- 7:07And they might still be, but, you know, they had these like entrance, grand entrances.
- 7:11Yes.
- 7:12Yeah.
- 7:13And so we always, I kind of wrote the entrances for the volleyball team when they would come in.
- 7:20Unbelievable.
- 7:20Everything from like, you know, they got locked up in a cage and then they had to spike the ball at the bad guys.
- 7:25Oh man.
- 7:26I came in to save the day.
- 7:27This is the best ever.
- 7:28This is just so awesome.
- 7:30We did have, we had a lot of fun with it.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:32I bet.
- 7:32Incredible.
- 7:34Man.
- 7:34Okay.
- 7:35Yeah.
- 7:36So you're West End kid going to the South Side for the music program.
- 7:39Going to the South Side.
- 7:41Going to the South Side.
- 7:42I love it.
- 7:42Was that your passion, Matt?
- 7:45Was that, hey, this is what I want to do after I graduate is music.
- 7:50No.
- 7:51No.
- 7:51Okay.
- 7:52Yeah.
- 7:53I mean, like I got into music.
- 7:56None of my family, like a lot of people when they're like, oh, you're musical, your family must be musical, right?
- 8:01And a lot of the times that is the case.
- 8:04Right.
- 8:05But I wasn't, like my family is not musical whatsoever.
- 8:09I started in a drum corps.
- 8:10So a drum corps is like a marching band.
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:13It's all, there's no woodwinds.
- 8:15And what you played the tuba?
- 8:17I played the, yeah.
- 8:18Yeah.
- 8:18I started out on the baritone, but I ended up going to...
- 8:21Baritone is a littler tuba.
- 8:22It's a mini tuba.
- 8:23Yeah.
- 8:23And so they're all marching tubas.
- 8:25We were marching.
- 8:26And so we would go down to the States and tour the States.
- 8:29Come on.
- 8:30And be in competitions.
- 8:31And they have, it's very, the drum corps is very competitive.
- 8:36Yeah.
- 8:36So if you've ever got a chance to, like, it's like an underground world.
- 8:40It's really cool.
- 8:42My business partner and I, Blair, he's a drummer.
- 8:45He's my drummer.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:46We both did high-end drum corps.
- 8:49Okay.
- 8:50So I marched with the Madison Scouts.
- 8:51I was just saying to Jennifer earlier today that on the weekend, I was watching, flipping through the channels, and they had the US.
- 8:58International Marching Band competition.
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:01In Houston, at like the Astrodome, whatever they call that, the Astrodome or whatever it is.
- 9:05And it was amazing.
- 9:07It's crazy.
- 9:07It's not that big in Canada.
- 9:09Or is it?
- 9:10No, it's not.
- 9:11That's the thing.
- 9:12It's not that big.
- 9:13Everyone I know goes down to the States to try out for whatever marching.
- 9:18I got friends that went to school on a marching band scholarship.
- 9:21Yeah, down there you can.
- 9:23But you guys had it going on here.
- 9:25I had to pay.
- 9:28Like tons of money.
- 9:29But you had it going on here.
- 9:30A flight down to Madison, Wisconsin every month.
- 9:33Wow.
- 9:34That's pretty cool.
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:38The drum corps is like the university marching band.
- 9:41Yeah.
- 9:42Then there's drum corps, which is the next level up.
- 9:46It's like the NHL of the marching band.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:51Wow.
- 9:52If you make that, you're like...
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:55You can only play till you're 21.
- 9:59So I'm going to age myself here.
- 10:01That's all right.
- 10:02But I aged out in 2005.
- 10:05Yeah, yeah.
- 10:06And so we got fifth in the world.
- 10:08The Madison scouts.
- 10:09Really?
- 10:10Fifth in the whole world.
- 10:13That's incredible.
- 10:15Wow.
- 10:16That's amazing.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:18And so its extremely competitive But then you had to quit because you were aging out.
- 10:21Yeah.
- 10:22I didn't want to do music.
- 10:23I wasn't into music.
- 10:24But this is the thing I was getting at is, when I first started with the Strutters Drum and Bugle Corps, which was here in Edmonton, now known as Northern Empire, they were going to Florida.
- 10:40And so it wasn't, hey, do you want to play music?
- 10:42It was, hey, do you want to go to Disney World?
- 10:45Okay, yeah.
- 10:46And I'm like, absolutely.
- 10:48So music...
- 10:49And even in high school with Rob Spears, we went to Italy, we went to Germany, we toured.
- 10:55Really?
- 10:56This is incredible.
- 10:57I'm a traveller.
- 10:58I love to travel.
- 11:00And so music was my vessel.
- 11:02To travel.
- 11:02Yeah, exactly.
- 11:04I just knew there was a story here.
- 11:06I knew it was more than just a bunch of guys getting together playing at the Oilers games.
- 11:10This is pretty incredible.
- 11:11Yeah.
- 11:12This is fascinating.
- 11:13The music is, I mean, the music is secondary.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:16I don't want to, I hate to admit that, but like the connections that we build with people.
- 11:20Right.
- 11:22The places we're able to go to, the things that we were able to do and see, it's all, that's what it brings on.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:30I mean, so.
- 11:30Wow.
- 11:31Okay.
- 11:31So you did that.
- 11:32Yeah.
- 11:32Then you got booted out because you were too old.
- 11:35That's right.
- 11:36Yeah.
- 11:36And among other things.
- 11:37Yeah.
- 11:39We don't need to go into those if you don't want.
- 11:41No comment.
- 11:41Yeah.
- 11:41No comment.
- 11:42Yeah.
- 11:42Okay.
- 11:44And then after that, I actually went down to the company I worked for.
- 11:52They brought me down to Red Deer.
- 11:54Oh, okay.
- 11:55And so I did, I kind of quit music.
- 11:57Yeah.
- 11:58For, you know, I had a family.
- 12:01I had two girls.
- 12:02Yeah.
- 12:03Yeah.
- 12:03I raised my kids and we had a house in Sylvan Lake.
- 12:07Okay.
- 12:08We lived down there and music wasn't.
- 12:11Yeah.
- 12:11On the forefront.
- 12:12Right.
- 12:13Yeah.
- 12:13So probably about six or seven years that, you know, I wasn't really into, I wasn't doing anything.
- 12:19Wow.
- 12:19And then as well as your heart, like deep down, your heart was still there.
- 12:24And there's, it's weird.
- 12:25Yeah.
- 12:26I didn't start.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:27Like it was a vessel to travel.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:29But then once you play, you have this bug.
- 12:32Right.
- 12:32You have this musician bug.
- 12:34Yeah.
- 12:34It's, it's there.
- 12:35Yeah.
- 12:36And so I would peruse the internet and I found a sousaphone.
- 12:41So that's what I play.
- 12:42It's a type of tuba.
- 12:44Okay.
- 12:45And so up until then, I was playing regular tubas.
- 12:48In drum corps, it's called a contra or it's a marching tuba that sits on your shoulder.
- 12:52Right, right.
- 12:53Yeah.
- 12:53Yeah.
- 12:54But the sousaphone, so when I went down, when I went to New Orleans, they had the New Orleans brass bands, right?
- 13:01And shout out to our like... love it.
- 13:03Rebirth brass band.
- 13:04Oh yeah.
- 13:05All the old school.
- 13:06There's a... I love it in New Orleans.
- 13:08I love walking down the street when the music's playing.
- 13:10The bands are marching.
- 13:11It's amazing.
- 13:11Oh, totally.
- 13:12When I die, I want I want.
- 13:17I was in New Orleans once and there was a funeral.
- 13:19You know how they do the funeral.
- 13:20I said to myself right then and there, I want that. Me too.
- 13:23I want that at my funeral.
- 13:24We do those.
- 13:25So do you?
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:26If you guys will sign the contract now.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:28And then I'll let, I'll put it in my will.
- 13:30I should do that.
- 13:31I should, I should.
- 13:32No, seriously.
- 13:33Get people while they're living, not after they're gone.
- 13:35100%.
- 13:36This, oh, okay.
- 13:38We should talk about this after, because I think there's a market here.
- 13:41And so I want you at mine and we'll get it into the will and get it signed.
- 13:45And anyway, so yeah.
- 13:46But email us if you're looking forward, like if you're out there.
- 13:50It will make funerals so much better.
- 13:52Yeah.
- 13:53No, it would.
- 13:54Because they're kind of, anyway, I've done quite a few of them in my day.
- 13:57We've done wakes.
- 13:58We've done, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:00A good buddy of mine, his family reached out and said, this is what I want you guys.
- 14:04Yeah.
- 14:04And so, yeah.
- 14:05This is incredible.
- 14:06I'm so excited now because I changed my will about the food at my funeral.
- 14:11Because I don't like sandwiches at funerals.
- 14:13That's dumb.
- 14:14So in my will, it says pizza and chicken wings and ice cream sundaes.
- 14:19And now to have a band like this? It's a celebration of life! Okay, I'm over the top right now.
- 14:24Anyway, we're digressing to something else.
- 14:27Sorry, it's okay.
- 14:27So you're in Sylvan Lake.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:30So I moved there and I didn't play or anything like that.
- 14:33And I always had that and I found a sousaphone for sale, which is something I'd never played.
- 14:42Like it's the round one that wraps around me.
- 14:45Right, right.
- 14:46So it's something I never played and I bought it.
- 14:50I just was like, I don't play in a band anymore.
- 14:53Honey, I bought a sousaphone.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:56Little did she know.
- 14:57Little did she know.
- 14:58I have three sousaphone.
- 15:00Oh my goodness.
- 15:01And two tubas.
- 15:03Two tubas.
- 15:04Trombones, trumpets, saxophones.
- 15:07Our music room is very full.
- 15:10Yeah.
- 15:10Okay, so you got a sousaphone.
- 15:12I got a sousaphone, but I never used it.
- 15:13I didn't have a purpose.
- 15:14Yeah.
- 15:14I just, you know, and I would bring it out and play it and jam on it.
- 15:19But I never really had a, I didn't have a band.
- 15:22Yeah.
- 15:23Right.
- 15:23So it just sat with me.
- 15:25Right.
- 15:26And I had the, okay, we need a brass band.
- 15:29We need to have a New Orleans style brass band.
- 15:31Edmonton doesn't have one.
- 15:33Right.
- 15:33Nobody has one up here.
- 15:35Like it's very seldom.
- 15:36There's some bands in Winnipeg, the heavyweights, they're an amazing brass band.
- 15:42Yeah.
- 15:43But nothing here.
- 15:43Do they play at the Jets game?
- 15:45No, sorry.
- 15:46Dirty Catfish Brass Band.
- 15:47Okay.
- 15:48They're the ones.
- 15:48They do play at the Jets game.
- 15:50Yeah.
- 15:50They do play at the Jets game.
- 15:51So, yeah.
- 15:53So I got the sousaphone and I just, yeah.
- 15:56And I just always like, let's bring the band.
- 16:00Like, let's do the band.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:02And my drummer, Blair, a great friend of mine, he marched in a drum corps as well, the Santa Clara Vanguard.
- 16:09We grew up together.
- 16:11He moved to China and he was living in China for X amount of years.
- 16:16Sure.
- 16:17And just coincidentally, I moved back to Edmonton.
- 16:20He moved back to Edmonton from being in China.
- 16:24And we both love golf.
- 16:26Yeah.
- 16:26So we're excited about the golf tournament this week.
- 16:30Ah, awesome.
- 16:31We're huge golfers, so we're going to try and sneak on after some way, somehow.
- 16:37Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 16:39I know there's some very...
- 16:40Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 16:42If the ranch is listening, we won't figure it out.
- 16:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:46But yeah, and we kind of were like, let's get...
- 16:49It's funny we say this, because we never really had a brass band to begin with.
- 16:52Let's get the band back together.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:54It was kind of like, hey, let's get the band back together.
- 16:56Let's get the band back together.
- 16:58And we put together a brass band, and that's the essential start of it, was influenced by New Orleans, but everything that we had done up until then, the marching, the drum corps, the marching bands, I could even get into the photobooth business and my own work with project management and whatnot, because it's essentially the same.
- 17:21Like, if you're managing musicians, you can pretty much manage anything.
- 17:25It's probably like herding cats a little bit, right?
- 17:27Yeah, it's like, yeah.
- 17:28It is.
- 17:28It's harder.
- 17:29I have cats.
- 17:30Yeah, cats.
- 17:32And you have musicians.
- 17:32And I have musicians.
- 17:33Yeah, yeah.
- 17:34Wow.
- 17:35Okay.
- 17:35So, to put the band together, what did you take?
- 17:38Did you take out an ad?
- 17:39How did you find the rest of your band?
- 17:41Wanted?
- 17:42Yeah.
- 17:42No, I mean, a lot of the guys we had played with here and there.
- 17:48And once you know somebody that's plugged in to the music community really well, you kind of, and that's kind of essentially in anything, right?
- 17:57When you're looking for contacts, you're like, who's plugged in and who do they know?
- 18:01And so it was basically like, so I put a rehearsal together and some guys came out and then it was like, you know who would be really good for this gig?
- 18:10This guy, Johnny Mac.
- 18:12Johnny Mac's your guy.
- 18:14And that's our saxophone player anyway.
- 18:16Johnny Mac, I love that.
- 18:17This is just getting better all the time.
- 18:20Johnny Mac, this is awesome.
- 18:21Shout out to Johnny Mac.
- 18:22He's our sax player.
- 18:23He's incredible.
- 18:25He's probably the biggest Oiler fan out there.
- 18:28Okay.
- 18:29Johnny Mac.
- 18:29Yeah.
- 18:30That's awesome.
- 18:30Okay.
- 18:31So we bring that and then Johnny Mac knows Zach.
- 18:34Yeah.
- 18:35And Zach knows, and it's not for everybody, especially with what we do.
- 18:42You have to be talented on two fronts.
- 18:44You have to be outgoing, and you have to be personable, and you have to have exude confidence.
- 18:51Not really Edmonton Symphony Orchestra type stuff.
- 18:54There are.
- 18:55Although you could, but not really.
- 18:56You guys are like.
- 18:57It's a different level.
- 18:59Yeah, you're out there.
- 19:00It's an energy level.
- 19:01Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 19:02It's an energy level.
- 19:05There's musical performance, and then there's musical playing.
- 19:10Yeah.
- 19:10You know what I mean?
- 19:11So that's what a lot of things that we learned in drum corps was it's not just a...
- 19:16We're not sitting in chairs and just playing.
- 19:18No.
- 19:18We are marching around.
- 19:19We are moving.
- 19:20We are in sync doing everything.
- 19:22We are doing all the stuff.
- 19:23Throwing flags.
- 19:24No.
- 19:24Yeah.
- 19:25Yeah.
- 19:25So it's called general effect.
- 19:27There is a production there.
- 19:29There is a performance.
- 19:31And so that's what we really gear towards is the movement, the interaction with the crowd.
- 19:36You know what I mean?
- 19:37It's all encompassing.
- 19:38Wow.
- 19:38Okay.
- 19:39Yeah.
- 19:39You got the band together.
- 19:40Got the band together and we started playing and...
- 19:44And so what?
- 19:45Do you put an ad out in the paper?
- 19:48Available.
- 19:50So what we did...
- 19:51New Orleans style brass band.
- 19:53Yeah.
- 19:54Essentially, that's exactly what we did.
- 19:57We had a...
- 19:59I had a Facebook post and Instagram, you know.
- 20:02Yeah.
- 20:02We went out on social media and said, this is who we are.
- 20:05This is what we do.
- 20:07And we're doing a brass blitz, basically.
- 20:12And so for $100, you guys could hire a brass band to march in and play whatever you had birthday, you had a barbecue, you had blah, blah, blah.
- 20:24Like, yeah, we would come in and we would play for 15 minutes.
- 20:28And we set this one day up like it was like, okay, May 24th or June 7th or whatever it was is, you book us on that day and we're just going to hit every...
- 20:39We booked 14 that day, the very first day.
- 20:4214, in one day.
- 20:43One day, yeah.
- 20:44You must have just been running.
- 20:46Oh, we were.
- 20:46Like, just like...
- 20:47It was ridiculous.
- 20:47Neighborhood to neighborhood.
- 20:49And everything seemed to work out.
- 20:50They were like, okay, I have, you know, okay, St.
- 20:54Albert, there's a store called Confections.
- 20:57Yeah.
- 20:58And they're amazing.
- 20:59But they booked us for the store open.
- 21:03So it was one of the owner's buddies.
- 21:04He's like, I want you guys to play outside and he has to get to the work in the early in the morning.
- 21:09I want you to play for him outside.
- 21:11You know what I mean?
- 21:12I love that.
- 21:13When someone hires us to like, hey, I'm quitting my job.
- 21:15Yeah.
- 21:16Yeah.
- 21:16I want a brass band to march me out.
- 21:19Yeah.
- 21:21No, seriously.
- 21:23You listen folks, when I quit the ABA, I'm calling Matt to march me out.
- 21:30There's another market, the HR department.
- 21:33You should go to after HR department.
- 21:34Anyway, okay.
- 21:35Yeah.
- 21:36So we booked 14.
- 21:37Yeah.
- 21:38Now, we only charged $100, which was the biggest mistake ever.
- 21:42Right.
- 21:43Well, yeah.
- 21:44I mean, you got eight guys and you made $1400.
- 21:46Yeah.
- 21:47Shared between eight guys.
- 21:48For us, essentially, it was a 7 o'clock in the morning to midnight.
- 21:52That's like barely a subway sand for each person.
- 21:56Like that's barely a foot long.
- 21:57Yeah.
- 21:57My lips were bleeding.
- 21:59We were tired.
- 22:00We were exhausted.
- 22:00I can imagine.
- 22:01But all of that work that day paid off.
- 22:04Because then it was like, oh, you know.
- 22:07Get these guys.
- 22:08Book, these guys.
- 22:09I saw these guys there.
- 22:10Here they are.
- 22:11Bam, bam, bam.
- 22:12Yeah.
- 22:12OK.
- 22:13And that brass blitz turned into, you know, we were we were playing tons of tons of shows.
- 22:21And it was a lot of like 15 minutes.
- 22:23You know, I just need you guys at my birthday party, whatever.
- 22:26And and then COVID hit.
- 22:29Oh, yeah.
- 22:30Right.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:30And we had we couldn't play anymore.
- 22:33So we started to book some gigs at bars and and sure we we actually had it was March 14th.
- 22:39We had a show booked at the rec room on the west end of West End Mall.
- 22:45And we we were like, yeah, no.
- 22:48So we did actually play that show really because it wasn't completely shut down.
- 22:52Yeah, right, right.
- 22:53And we play that show to... Is it hard to play on a sousaphone with a mask on?
- 22:57Yeah, like I can imagine.
- 23:00Yeah, anyway, we had we had.
- 23:02So and after that, the controls came in.
- 23:05Right.
- 23:05Where you had to mask up.
- 23:07Yeah.
- 23:08And then they said you can play live music outside.
- 23:10As a yeah, like the brass musicians, the horn musicians have to cover their own bells.
- 23:19So we had, OK, we had.
- 23:20That's another podcast right there.
- 23:22I'm not getting into that right now.
- 23:23But anyway, that's just anyway.
- 23:25OK, we had to basically we had to do brass masks.
- 23:29Unbelievable.
- 23:29OK, yeah.
- 23:30Whole other podcast.
- 23:31Yeah.
- 23:32Well, yeah.
- 23:33Anyway, so yeah, so we we played outside.
- 23:36We were able to play outside.
- 23:37And we had I guess we had a advantage over other people because we didn't have power.
- 23:44We didn't need power.
- 23:45We could play anywhere.
- 23:46We could play outside.
- 23:47Right.
- 23:48We could be socially distanced.
- 23:50Yeah.
- 23:50You know what I mean?
- 23:51Yeah.
- 23:51So we could do all that where sad enough, a lot of our friends who are musicians were like, yeah, it really killed us.
- 23:57Couldn't play, yeah.
- 23:57Because your bars, clubs, whatever shut down.
- 24:00Yeah.
- 24:00And here we're sitting going, we're kind of thriving a little bit.
- 24:04It's it's tough to say that, but we played a ton.
- 24:06But we know and all I think that's fantastic.
- 24:08I think that's really great.
- 24:09It was good because we lifted people when we played.
- 24:12People were like, you guys have no idea.
- 24:15For sure.
- 24:16You have no idea how much this meant to us.
- 24:19Right.
- 24:19So we really felt like we were doing something important.
- 24:24Good for you guys.
- 24:25Good that you didn't just shut her down.
- 24:26Yeah.
- 24:26Good for you guys.
- 24:29And we found ways to make it work.
- 24:32Starlight Room in Edmonton.
- 24:34Right.
- 24:34One of our biggest supporters.
- 24:36They are awesome.
- 24:37Tyson and Andrea over there and all the guys.
- 24:40Shout out to them.
- 24:41They supported us through the whole thing.
- 24:43They actually had us come up on the, we couldn't play inside.
- 24:46Okay.
- 24:47So we actually went up on the roof.
- 24:48Yeah.
- 24:49We're like, hey, we can't play inside.
- 24:50Rooftop.
- 24:51Yeah.
- 24:51That's great.
- 24:52So we did the first rooftop series.
- 24:55And so they actually did more bands after that.
- 24:58But we were the first.
- 24:59I built a stage up there on the roof.
- 25:01Like that's fantastic.
- 25:04That's fantastic.
- 25:05Is that stage still there?
- 25:06The stage is still there.
- 25:07We should do a street concert or something out there.
- 25:09Yeah.
- 25:09No, another one.
- 25:10Yeah.
- 25:10Let's book it.
- 25:11For the middle of summer, it will just go after it.
- 25:13That would be crazy.
- 25:14You know, it wasn't, because to get on the roof, it was like two feet by two feet.
- 25:20The Starlight Room is old.
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:22No, no.
- 25:22It's an old building.
- 25:23For sure.
- 25:24So the way up on the roof is this ladder that you've got to climb up.
- 25:28And getting a sousaphone.
- 25:30I have to take my sousaphone.
- 25:31I can only imagine.
- 25:32I have to take my sousaphone apart.
- 25:33Maybe we can get one of our crane companies to, like.
- 25:36Put the instruments up.
- 25:38Put them in a big case and just lift them up.
- 25:40I wonder if they would just...
- 25:41Sure.
- 25:42If they could just...
- 25:43We could play hung from the cranes.
- 25:46You know what I mean?
- 25:48I was just saying this the other day that we should do an event.
- 25:51I was.
- 25:52We should do that.
- 25:53Okay.
- 25:53Well, we got so much to talk about after.
- 25:55This is unbelievable.
- 25:56We do.
- 25:56All right.
- 25:56Time's running out.
- 25:58But I have to know, when did the Edmonton Oilers group come knocking?
- 26:02How did that start?
- 26:04Okay.
- 26:04So Brasstactics and the Oilers group aren't the same.
- 26:08Some of us play in the Oilers band, and some of us...
- 26:11So it's not the same band.
- 26:13We just have same members and whatnot.
- 26:16But I am fortunate enough to play in both bands.
- 26:19But yeah.
- 26:19So then they came knocking and looking for a brass band, and we were able to get that in.
- 26:28It's incredible.
- 26:29Yeah.
- 26:29And so I play with the Oilers drum and brass crew, and I love it.
- 26:35It's amazing.
- 26:35You guys are so...
- 26:36It adds so much.
- 26:38Before the game, like I said, you guys march around the concourse.
- 26:42People...
- 26:43Everybody who has a phone is taking...
- 26:45Everybody who is taking pictures, everybody...
- 26:47I have a friend who actually, they have a Down syndrome child, and they go to a lot of games, and whenever he sees you guys coming...
- 26:54I know who he is.
- 26:55Yeah.
- 26:55He goes crazy.
- 26:57We just danced with him last night.
- 26:58Yeah.
- 26:58That's right.
- 26:59Yeah, that's right. He's so awesome! He was there last night.
- 27:00He was there last night.
- 27:01Yeah.
- 27:02He just loves you guys.
- 27:03He loves you guys.
- 27:04Oh, yeah.
- 27:04And then you go up with your little perch.
- 27:06What's his name? Do you know his name?
- 27:07Oh, sorry.
- 27:07I'm throwing you on the spot.
- 27:08No, it's okay.
- 27:08It's okay.
- 27:09I'll get you...
- 27:10Yeah.
- 27:10Send me his name, because if you can...
- 27:12Russ.
- 27:12Russ Matichuk.
- 27:13Okay.
- 27:14Yeah.
- 27:14Hook me up with his name.
- 27:15Brian.
- 27:15Brian Matichuk.
- 27:16Okay.
- 27:17I'd love to reach out to him.
- 27:18Sure.
- 27:18Yeah.
- 27:18We'll talk later.
- 27:19He actually has his own Instagram page, Dancing With Brian.
- 27:23It's phenomenal.
- 27:23Oh my God.
- 27:25Yeah.
- 27:26We'll get to it after.
- 27:27He's amazing.
- 27:28Anyway, so when you guys get up on your perch and then go and play stops or whatever, personally, I don't think you play enough up there, but I know there's a lot going on.
- 27:38Oh, they've got a ton of sponsors they need to get to.
- 27:41But if it were me, if I was in charge, Tim Shipton, do you know Tim?
- 27:45Tim's the VP, so we've had Tim on the show.
- 27:47And Tim, they should play more.
- 27:49Yeah, just saying, Tim.
- 27:51Anyways, yeah.
- 27:51We love it.
- 27:52I mean, whether we win or lose, a lot of people come up and say, you guys were the best part of the show, or the best part of the game, or whatnot.
- 28:00That means a lot.
- 28:00I know it's not true.
- 28:02I mean, like, these are the Oilers, right?
- 28:04Yeah.
- 28:04But you know, for a lot of people, like the diehard hockey people who are dialed into the game, and then there's the people that come for the whole experience.
- 28:11Absolutely.
- 28:11And you guys just bring that experience to the whole experience.
- 28:15The Edmonton experience is incredible.
- 28:17Yes.
- 28:17Like, I will comment on the Edmonton Oilers experience, and it is so fun to be there.
- 28:23Right.
- 28:23And the excitement that is in that building night after night after night after night.
- 28:28Even watching the game last night in Florida, one of the announcers, mind you, a Canadian announcer, Yeah.
- 28:35He said, this is nothing like Edmonton.
- 28:37This is nothing.
- 28:38It isn't.
- 28:39We are unique.
- 28:40They say we are the best in the league.
- 28:42Yeah.
- 28:42That's what they say in terms of experience.
- 28:44So that's incredible.
- 28:45And I've had other teams in the league reach out to find out how we do it.
- 28:51How we do what we do.
- 28:51Because you guys are amazing.
- 28:53Amazing.
- 28:53You're on here.
- 28:55It's almost 30 minutes.
- 28:56Almost 30 minutes.
- 28:57Really?
- 28:58Yeah. This has gone by so fast.
- 28:58Not kidding.
- 28:59Not kidding.
- 29:00OK, final question.
- 29:01Finally, we ask all of our guests.
- 29:02Every one of our guests.
- 29:03What is the best piece of advice you've been given that either personally or professionally that you carry with you to this day?
- 29:10I think it's confidence and believing in yourself.
- 29:15And just, yeah, not exuding confidence, but just believing in yourself and go with your gut.
- 29:21Go with your gut and put yourself on the line, but do it with confidence and it will work out.
- 29:29And if it doesn't, you still did it with confidence.
- 29:34And go in, you know, I wouldn't say go in full, but I think in a musician style of way, is be confident with what you're doing.
- 29:44And how do you be confident with what you're doing is all of the preparation and all of the practicing that leads up to that.
- 29:52So it's not like...
- 29:53It doesn't just happen.
- 29:54And that's what I'm trying to get at.
- 29:57You want to be confident, you can't just pull confidence out of the air.
- 30:00So work at the things that will get you to that.
- 30:03How many hours a week do you guys practice?
- 30:05I don't...
- 30:06We play more than we practice.
- 30:07Do you?
- 30:08Okay, but you're constantly playing.
- 30:09So that's...
- 30:11It's like practice right there, yeah.
- 30:12We're gigging all the time.
- 30:13All the time.
- 30:14I mean, we've got...
- 30:15Man, I'm so excited about Friday.
- 30:18It's gonna be great.
- 30:19It's gonna be awesome.
- 30:20It's just gonna be awesome for the golfers, for everybody there.
- 30:24It's...
- 30:24Yeah, we'll bring out...
- 30:26What a pleasure to meet you.
- 30:27What a great story, Matt.
- 30:29What a great story.
- 30:29Thank you for having me.
- 30:31You need to...
- 30:31Everybody needs to hear this story.
- 30:33And if people want to book Brasstactics, how do they find you?
- 30:36Come on to our website, www.thebrasstactics.com.
- 30:40I know a lot of times we hear...
- 30:41Brasstactics.
- 30:42Yeah, a lot of times we hear Brasstastics.
- 30:44Yeah.
- 30:45And that might lead to like, hey, I tried to reach out to you.
- 30:47Yeah, yeah.
- 30:48No, your tactics.
- 30:49The tactics of the brass.
- 30:51Let's get down to Brasstacts.
- 30:52Yes.
- 30:52All that, yeah.
- 30:53So brasstactics.com.
- 30:56And then alternatively, you can reach out to us on Instagram or Facebook.
- 31:00Right.
