- 0:15Ryan: The monkey.
- 0:17The monkey, uh, such a good movie.
- 0:21Kearns: It was good.
- 0:22It was enjoyable to watch this one.
- 0:24Ryan: The, I'll say this, the opening really hooks you.
- 0:27I like that old 1960s vibe and the music and it's just, it gets you
- 0:32like, you know, it's a horror film.
- 0:35Kearns: Yeah,
- 0:35Ryan: fun horror film, if that makes sense.
- 0:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 0:38Ryan: have fun
- 0:39Kearns: definitely a, yeah, it's definitely a fun horse.
- 0:44Before we dig too deep though, John, do you have anything nefarious for us today?
- 0:47Jon: Of course I have a blind rank.
- 0:51I,
- 0:53Kearns: I'm getting tired of these.
- 0:54Jon: all right, so here's the thing.
- 0:57I think someone's getting four or five points guessing the theme,
- 1:01Kearns: Okay.
- 1:02Jon: but this is gonna be your hardest list.
- 1:05Kearns: Okay.
- 1:06Jon: All right.
- 1:08The, let's pop the wrong, I.
- 1:10Ryan: There's like so many avenues.
- 1:12Last time it was years.
- 1:14Others was Pearls in New York.
- 1:15Jon: Yep.
- 1:21I know this isn't, why is this not sharing properly?
- 1:23There we go.
- 1:25Ryan: I
- 1:26Jon: You guys see you.
- 1:27There we go.
- 1:28Kearns: Oh boy.
- 1:33Writer's Nightmares.
- 1:35Um, Kathy Bates, uh,
- 1:42Ryan: Stephen
- 1:42Kearns: misery.
- 1:44Misery is another one of those.
- 1:46That's better.
- 1:47A better book than a movie.
- 1:49And Misery was a good movie.
- 1:51Um,
- 1:53Jon: what did you say, Ryan?
- 1:55Ryan: Stephen King characters.
- 1:59Jon: I'm debating if I'm debating if I'm counting that.
- 2:04Kearns: how could that possibly be the hardest, though?
- 2:07of your.
- 2:08Jon: Oh, the theme is easy making ranking.
- 2:10This is gonna be hard.
- 2:12Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 2:12Ryan: Oh, oh.
- 2:13All right.
- 2:14Hold.
- 2:14Jon: I'm, I'm gonna, I'm gonna count it.
- 2:17Ryan got the theme.
- 2:18So,
- 2:18Kearns: That's
- 2:19Jon: rank misery,
- 2:22Kearns: Four.
- 2:23Jon: rank four.
- 2:25Oops.
- 2:26What'd you say, Ryan,
- 2:28Ryan: um, I'm going to, so I'm gonna have to rank it at five.
- 2:34And the reason I'm ranking it at five, I've never seen it.
- 2:37'cause I am oversaturated with the scene when she busts his ankles
- 2:43Jon: you've
- 2:44Ryan: scene creeps me
- 2:45Jon: seen misery.
- 2:47Kearns: Take away his, he gets.
- 2:50Jon: I'm tempted.
- 2:52I'm tempted.
- 2:54I purposely, I purposely tried to build this list with the most movies
- 2:59that you guys have seen that I love.
- 3:02So we'll go to the next one.
- 3:05Maybe you've seen this one, Ryan.
- 3:10Kearns: The dark.
- 3:11of course.
- 3:11It's George Romero.
- 3:13Jon: Of course it is.
- 3:14Ryan: Yes,
- 3:17Jon: What a relationship that was.
- 3:20Kearns: I didn't know.
- 3:20Uh, they were really close.
- 3:22Jon: Yeah,
- 3:24Kearns: Cool.
- 3:24Jon: forgotten.
- 3:26Kearns: Cool.
- 3:28Jon: All right, so where are we ranking the dark half.
- 3:30Kearns: I'm going with two.
- 3:32Jon: Ooh,
- 3:36Ryan: I am gonna go with 3 0
- 3:45Jon: All right.
- 3:51It is.
- 3:52It is the original tv, Tim Curry, who is still alive version.
- 3:57Ryan: Yes.
- 3:59the hell outta me as a kid
- 4:04Kearns: Going with the dark half, might have been a little half cocked 'cause
- 4:08I would've put it two just in case.
- 4:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:12Kearns: I really like it.
- 4:13Ryan: one.
- 4:15Kearns: I'm gonna, I'm gonna go rogue here.
- 4:16It's gonna be three
- 4:18Jon: All right.
- 4:19Kearns: TV series.
- 4:20I'll put a three so I have a one outta a five left.
- 4:24This is not good.
- 4:27Ryan: I got two and four.
- 4:29Jon: Ah, I think it might work out.
- 4:30Let's see.
- 4:34Ryan: Oh, that's gotta be two.
- 4:39What?
- 4:41Kearns: I liked it, but I'm not gonna waste a one on maximum overdrive.
- 4:44I would definitely gamble.
- 4:50Jon: Oh.
- 4:50Ryan: I'm gonna feel horrible if it's
- 4:51Jon: I don't, I don't think Ryan's gonna like what the last movie winds up at four.
- 4:58Kearns: Oh no.
- 5:00Ryan: I'm like, pet
- 5:03Kearns: Oh, easy, easy one.
- 5:06Easy one.
- 5:08I mean, I was waiting for Shawshank or Green Mile too.
- 5:11Gotta know like how much you love those.
- 5:13Stand By Me is an epic,
- 5:15Jon: Oh, but see, I'm gonna disappoint you.
- 5:18I don't love Shawshank.
- 5:20Kearns: That's fine.
- 5:22Jon: Yeah,
- 5:23Ryan: Yeah.
- 5:26Uh,
- 5:27Jon: you, you had it at number one or stand by me at number one, rather.
- 5:34You had, you went Stand By Me, dark half it misery and maximum overdrive,
- 5:40which I think is your one flaw.
- 5:42I think maximum overdrive should be higher, but.
- 5:44Kearns: I would've made it higher if I didn't only have five left, I
- 5:47would've probably put it at three.
- 5:48I would've put in at two.
- 5:50I would've put the dark half at four, and I would've, I might
- 5:53have dropped misery to five.
- 5:54Yeah, I would've dropped misery to five.
- 5:57Jon: All right, so we have a little, A shakeup in our leaderboard.
- 6:01Kearns: I was
- 6:02Jon: Yeah.
- 6:04Yeah.
- 6:04Ryan: Yeah.
- 6:05Jon: You get the point for the list.
- 6:07Ryan gets five for the theme.
- 6:10Ryan: I am definitely, like, I would've switched some things.
- 6:13Definitely.
- 6:14Oh, 'cause I guessed it real quick.
- 6:15Jon: guessed it on the first one.
- 6:18Ryan: Yeah.
- 6:20Kearns: that was the easiest theme.
- 6:23Jon: Yep.
- 6:24Kearns: I was out here,
- 6:24Ryan: would've,
- 6:26Kearns: this motherfucker.
- 6:31Ryan: it's the name of the game.
- 6:33I would've definitely put Stand by me as number one though, and it is number two,
- 6:37maximum overdrive would've been three.
- 6:38And
- 6:39Kearns: rest of your life.
- 6:41That's the important thing.
- 6:42That's the important thing.
- 6:44Ryan: I
- 6:45Jon: Yep.
- 6:46I think this,
- 6:47Ryan: in myself right now.
- 6:48Jon: I think this will be the first one we publish anywhere, just so
- 6:52Ryan has to like live a forever.
- 6:57Kearns: Oh, poor
- 6:58Ryan: before.
- 6:59Stand by me.
- 7:00Kearns: Ryan.
- 7:00We'll stop.
- 7:01I'll stop shitting on you because I'm a sore loser, but
- 7:04Ryan: No, it's, it's okay.
- 7:06Kearns: so we're doing the Monkey tonight gentlemen, as you well know.
- 7:10Listeners, the monkey, which if you haven't put it together yet, is
- 7:13an adaptation from a Stephen King short story from Skeleton Crew,
- 7:18Jon: Yep.
- 7:19Ryan: yep.
- 7:19Kearns: and which I have like the most beat up paperback
- 7:23over here of skeleton crew.
- 7:25Excuse me, as I leave.
- 7:29Jon: Excuse me while I whip this out.
- 7:35Ryan: There
- 7:36Jon: Yes.
- 7:37Kearns: You know, it's a well loved book right there.
- 7:39Look at
- 7:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:39Kearns: baby.
- 7:40Jon: Yep.
- 7:41Kearns: Um,
- 7:42Ryan: But
- 7:42Kearns: let's see what else is in this one.
- 7:44Ryan: on the cover it's symbols, it's not drumsticks
- 7:48Jon: Yes.
- 7:48Ryan: they're using the
- 7:49Kearns: because that was the back in
- 7:50Ryan: symbols.
- 7:51Kearns: the day.
- 7:51The toy was symbols.
- 7:53Jon: Yeah.
- 7:53Kearns: Oh, the mis is in this one as well.
- 7:55Here there'd be Tigers.
- 7:56The monkeys only 30 pages long and they made a full length movie out of it.
- 8:00Jon: mm-hmm.
- 8:01Kearns: The jaunt is in this as well.
- 8:03The raft from creep show way back in the day.
- 8:06Jon: Yep.
- 8:06Kearns: Word processor of the gods is another fantastic one.
- 8:09This is one of his best ones ever.
- 8:11Uncle Otto's truck is also a movie, I think, um, for Owen, his son.
- 8:19Wow.
- 8:21Dude.
- 8:21Skeleton crew was 19.
- 8:26Playboy is one of the things that, that, um.
- 8:30Gave him a write up on this 1986 First print
- 8:34Ryan: Yep.
- 8:35Kearns: Wild.
- 8:36Ryan: was for the collection.
- 8:37The monkey came out though in 1980 of November.
- 8:42Doesn't say a magazine though.
- 8:46Kearns: So
- 8:47Ryan: I think you're, you're
- 8:48Kearns: a good,
- 8:48Ryan: for,
- 8:50Kearns: I'm surprised.
- 8:51Made a movie out.
- 8:52It somebody needed money is my,
- 8:55Ryan: um.
- 8:57Well, at the time he was doing a thing on his, uh, website.
- 9:01Um, they closed it recently or a couple years back.
- 9:04So if you paid a dollar, you can create any of the stories that were
- 9:09listed under, um, what he allowed to be published or worked into movies.
- 9:14And the monkey was on there
- 9:16Kearns: oh, so.
- 9:16Ryan: then all of a sudden Yep.
- 9:20For the, the writer, um, Osgood Perkins, basically, he grabbed
- 9:24it for a dollar and sold it to eon the idea and directed it too.
- 9:29He also
- 9:29Jon: Oz per,
- 9:30Ryan: length.
- 9:31Jon: yep.
- 9:31Oz Perkins.
- 9:32Who is horror royalty or descendant of horror Royalty?
- 9:37Kearns: I got it.
- 9:38Jon: I,
- 9:39Kearns: uh, the royalty.
- 9:41Jon: Anthony Perkins?
- 9:44Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 9:46Makes sense.
- 9:47Yeah.
- 9:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:48Ryan: make sure I didn't know, maybe restaurant related.
- 9:50I, I had to be
- 9:51Jon: Nope.
- 9:52Nope.
- 9:53Kearns: It's cool,
- 9:54Jon: Psycho.
- 9:55Kearns: Story.
- 9:57So the monkey, um, starts out pretty fun.
- 10:00it hits you with the, vibe right away and it doesn't leave
- 10:02that vibe for the whole movie.
- 10:03And I appreciate, and that's very
- 10:05Jon: Yeah.
- 10:05Kearns: of them too.
- 10:06Jon: Yeah.
- 10:07Kearns: it starts out, we, go to a pawn shop and there's this
- 10:10kind of real cagey pawn broker.
- 10:12He is not really picking up what the guy comes in to sell.
- 10:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:16Kearns: uh, sounds like there's, wait, if I remember there going off
- 10:20outside, like shit was hitting the.
- 10:23Ryan: Well, he comes in with his, well, first off, uh, it's the character's
- 10:27p uh, Pete Shelburne, who's played by Adam Scott, and he comes in, he's
- 10:32a pilot and he's covered in blood.
- 10:34It's all dry blood, and he's holding this monkey just like.
- 10:37He doesn't want any part of it.
- 10:39And the guy's like, you know, you're covered in blood.
- 10:41And he goes, well, it's not my blood.
- 10:43Uh, nevermind.
- 10:44I just need to get rid of this.
- 10:45And he's like, no returns on toys.
- 10:47And he's like, a toy.
- 10:49It understands you.
- 10:50Which is interesting to put out right in the beginning.
- 10:53It understands you don't call it a toy.
- 10:55And then that's when the shit hits the fan.
- 10:58But they set it up.
- 10:59They set it up brilliantly because they show like the, um, oh, I'm
- 11:04going with the Scooby-Doo character 'cause of the marine outfit.
- 11:09Um, the diver suit, ther suit's in there with the
- 11:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:13Kearns: Oh
- 11:13Ryan: harpoon gun.
- 11:15You have the mouse on the shelf, you have knives, you have that can go wrong
- 11:21Jon: Yep.
- 11:21Ryan: and you know it's gonna go wrong.
- 11:24Kearns: indeed,
- 11:25Jon: Yep.
- 11:26Kearns: indeed it does.
- 11:26Now,
- 11:27Jon: And
- 11:27Kearns: there, I wanted to know, because this is important for
- 11:29later, what did it sound like?
- 11:31There was bedlum outside of the shop.
- 11:33Yeah, so it
- 11:34Jon: Yeah,
- 11:34Kearns: down out there
- 11:35Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 11:38The And that, yeah, that's definitely the monkey escalates.
- 11:42Kearns: Yes, the monkey does escalate.
- 11:45Jon: And our poor, poor pawn, pawn broker, poor pawn broker, it belie,
- 11:53believes that the monkey's broken anyway.
- 11:56'cause it's that arm goes up and just sticks.
- 12:00Ryan: Yep.
- 12:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:03You get the stick spin and it just stays up.
- 12:08But you don't, you don't, you quickly learn.
- 12:10You don't want to be around when that stick comes down.
- 12:13Ryan: Oh, no, you don't, but at least it's, well, it's random at least.
- 12:19Jon: Random ish.
- 12:21Kearns: Random ish is a good way to put it.
- 12:23Um, so we, we flash forward before we give too much away.
- 12:27We flash forward to, um, the semi future and the pilots to children, our twin boys.
- 12:35And, uh, one's a dick and one's a nerd
- 12:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:38Kearns: are just screwing around and they happen upon the box or little
- 12:42box, whatever you wanna call that.
- 12:44It's a round box, so it's
- 12:45Jon: Yep.
- 12:46Kearns: but it's got the monkey in it.
- 12:48Jon: Yep.
- 12:48Kearns: says, I forget that the phrase, if anybody remembers the phrase
- 12:52Jon: Like life.
- 12:54Kearns: like life,
- 12:55Jon: Yeah.
- 12:56Ryan: Like life,
- 12:58Kearns: and then what's the, um, saying of the monkey that the monkey uses.
- 13:02He says, give it a shot or like give it a try, or something like that.
- 13:06Like turn the
- 13:07Jon: Oh,
- 13:07Kearns: and
- 13:08Jon: yeah.
- 13:10Kearns: um, turn the key.
- 13:13So that's before that though, it's also on the box.
- 13:16The, like, the two little boys see it when they first open up the monkey.
- 13:20Jon: Yeah.
- 13:21I didn't write that down.
- 13:22I, hold on.
- 13:23Ryan: I
- 13:23Jon: I'm gonna see if I can.
- 13:24Kearns: We can look it up like two seconds.
- 13:26But uh, and they, so the kids are screwing around with it.
- 13:31And then they, they crank the key
- 13:33Ryan: yep.
- 13:34Kearns: in the closet, right?
- 13:35They do the first one in the closet
- 13:36Jon: Right outside the closet.
- 13:37Kearns: right outside,
- 13:38Jon: I think they're on the floor outside the closet
- 13:41Kearns: and then cl, cl cl he starts drumming away and somebody's gotta eat it.
- 13:48Who
- 13:48Jon: and,
- 13:50Kearns: Well, actually Annie's the first one.
- 13:52Um, but he takes a while.
- 13:54The monkey doesn't hit the drum right away.
- 13:56So this is the, another, like the first example of that
- 13:58Jon: mm-hmm.
- 13:59Kearns: Wilkes, who we'll talk about in a second.
- 14:01'cause this one chaps my ass a little bit.
- 14:04them to, um, a hibachi dinner.
- 14:06She's their babysitter.
- 14:08And they go to vi bocce and she's got the hots for the chef, which I liked.
- 14:11It was like, go Annie,
- 14:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:13Kearns: go.
- 14:13And then he accidentally cuts off her head while he is showing off
- 14:15with her because dropped his stick
- 14:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:18Kearns: and then her head falls off on, which is a
- 14:21Jon: Yep.
- 14:22Yeah,
- 14:23Ryan: and it shows the monkey is like, has like a little like,
- 14:26um, I don't wanna say like little magic or um, supernatural to it.
- 14:32It's very supernatural because it appears in the van, they
- 14:35Jon: yeah,
- 14:35Ryan: house
- 14:36Jon: yeah.
- 14:37Ryan: it's right in the front seat of
- 14:39Jon: I,
- 14:39Ryan: Drumming
- 14:40Jon: just want to, I just want to backtrack so for one second so
- 14:44we get a sense of how the twins are when they find the monkey.
- 14:48Bill claims it as his own because he is the oldest and therefore
- 14:52their dad's next of skin.
- 14:56Ryan: Yep.
- 14:58Kearns: I.
- 14:59Jon: So Bill is kind of, Bill's kind of a halfwit and a bully.
- 15:04Ryan: Oh, a hundred percent
- 15:07Kearns: Yeah, I mean, yeah,
- 15:10Jon: And Bill is also in love with Annie.
- 15:13Like
- 15:13Ryan: yes.
- 15:14Jon: he, he is heartbroken when she's into the, the chef.
- 15:20Ryan: I mean, he, he made her a rice heart on Hibachi All
- 15:25Jon: Yeah.
- 15:25I mean, what woman could resist a rice heart?
- 15:31No,
- 15:31Ryan: Not
- 15:32Jon: that's, that's why, contrary to what people tell you, it is not a
- 15:36good idea to bring a date to hibachi.
- 15:40Kearns: I suppose not.
- 15:43Essence, thanks for the PS A guys, um,
- 15:46Ryan: day
- 15:47Kearns: so.
- 15:48we leave the scene with the hibachi, go straight to the funeral.
- 15:52Ryan: Yeah,
- 15:53Kearns: the brothers are kind of shocked.
- 15:55They, they don't really, they didn't put anything together yet.
- 15:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:00Ryan: the pre, the priest is just inappropriate.
- 16:03That's all I'm gonna say on that
- 16:04Jon: The, the priest is entirely inappropriate.
- 16:07Kearns: The is awesome.
- 16:08He completely likes another reason he slams the tone and tenor of the movie
- 16:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:13Kearns: just,
- 16:13Jon: Yeah.
- 16:16Yep.
- 16:17Stoner priest.
- 16:18But is the priest more inappropriate than the speech the boys get from mom?
- 16:25After the funeral,
- 16:27Kearns: no, we all
- 16:30Jon: everyone is gonna die.
- 16:31Everything, everyone.
- 16:33It's, it's the most miserable speech you could possibly give a kid.
- 16:38And then she ends it with,
- 16:39Ryan: cream.
- 16:40Jon: yeah, and then she ends it with, let's go dancing.
- 16:43Ryan: Yeah,
- 16:44Kearns: That's another weird one.
- 16:47Ryan: that's like her coping mechanism.
- 16:49I think
- 16:50Jon: Oh, for sure.
- 16:52Kearns: yeah, that's a good point.
- 16:54Plus she's also with the fact that her husband vanished,
- 16:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:59Kearns: I'm sure
- 17:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:01Kearns: out.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:02Left for cigarettes on a flight.
- 17:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:05Which I mean is another hint that the monkey is sort of supernatural in
- 17:11itself because he brought the monkey somewhere else and then set it on
- 17:16fire and the monkey showed back up in his home in perfect condition.
- 17:24Kearns: yeah, for his son's.
- 17:26How And bill to, to pick up in the closet.
- 17:30And then, um, which one's the dick?
- 17:32Is it Hal?
- 17:34Jon: Bill.
- 17:34Kearns: One of the bro, the one brother's a dick.
- 17:37Alright, Bill's the dick.
- 17:38So Bill tortures his brother, and he also sets him up to be
- 17:40tortured by people at school,
- 17:43Jon: yeah.
- 17:43Kearns: make very funny in camping and, and, uh, hilarious.
- 17:47But it is important for the movie because they, how gets, you know,
- 17:52mercilessly bullied and, um, the monkey shows up too, which doesn't help.
- 17:58And they, they
- 17:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:59Kearns: him.
- 17:59That's my favorite.
- 18:00They just, kids just walk in with boxes of bananas to the assembly
- 18:04and just destroy him with them.
- 18:06And
- 18:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:07Kearns: the times because back then the staff would probably let that go.
- 18:12Jon: The staff would definitely let that go.
- 18:15Kearns: yeah, back in the day, they would be laughing alongside the kids.
- 18:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:19Kearns: different time right now
- 18:21Jon: Yep.
- 18:24Kearns: Here we are.
- 18:25Um, so he's, he ends up getting, getting worked over and that's when he decides
- 18:29to, to bust out the monkey again.
- 18:31And I don't know if he put two and two together or he kind of, I don't forget
- 18:35how he kind of figures out that it might kill somebody for him, but he is
- 18:39aware of that when he turns the key.
- 18:41Jon: Yeah, I think Hal definitely figured out very quickly
- 18:46that the monkey is cursed.
- 18:50Ryan: Yes.
- 18:51Jon: And
- 18:52Ryan: he put everything together quickly.
- 18:54Jon: Hal also learned that mom doesn't go in their room anymore
- 18:57since she found this stiff sock.
- 19:01Kearns: it's, it's another really good, really good line in the movie.
- 19:05She probably cut her foot on it.
- 19:06The poor lady.
- 19:08Terrible.
- 19:08Ryan: She was
- 19:09Jon: No.
- 19:10So, Hal, after, the Beaning goes home and turns the key and in tries to
- 19:16instruct the monkey to go for Bill,
- 19:18Kearns: Yeah,
- 19:19Ryan: Doesn't work.
- 19:21Jon: the monkey doesn't take special requests.
- 19:24Kearns: no, does not.
- 19:26And again, his mother has a nice anur, a very Hollywood aneurysm might I
- 19:30Jon: Yeah.
- 19:31Kearns: and a kitchen where like the side of her head is
- 19:33just out with blood and she's
- 19:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:36Kearns: and then on the.
- 19:39Jon: Yep.
- 19:39Ryan: how bloody that scene was just, it's just pouring out of her
- 19:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:43Yeah.
- 19:44Ryan: eye, and then it's like shooting out of her neck.
- 19:45At one point I'm like, what?
- 19:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:48Ryan: on?
- 19:49Jon: And
- 19:50Ryan: like a blood.
- 19:51Jon: you, you get another little life sort of lesson there when they,
- 19:55when Hal's voiceover says that it, it was a one in 44 million chance,
- 20:01and he says, one in 44 million only means it has to happen to someone.
- 20:06Ryan: Gotcha.
- 20:06Jon: Like there's a, there are a lot of those little like
- 20:10ouch lines in there like that.
- 20:13Kearns: It's good writing.
- 20:15um, I'm curious why they chose the number 44 million.
- 20:17That wasn't the population of the US at the time, was it?
- 20:22Jon: No, probably not.
- 20:23I think that, that that's, I think that's probably the actual medical likelihood
- 20:28of the type of aneurysm she had.
- 20:31Kearns: Oh, got it, got it.
- 20:32Now I get it.
- 20:33You're saying thank you.
- 20:35Jon: Yep.
- 20:37Kearns: Um,
- 20:38Ryan: I'm happy you
- 20:38Kearns: we get,
- 20:41Ryan: because I
- 20:41Kearns: we,
- 20:42Ryan: this is a very low number right now.
- 20:45Like
- 20:46Kearns: it's interesting.
- 20:48We get that and then we get the monkey getting tossed in the, well
- 20:52Jon: Yep,
- 20:52Kearns: it up, which is a nice touch,
- 20:54Jon: yep.
- 20:54Kearns: then they throw in the well, and that's that.
- 20:57Jon: Well,
- 20:57Kearns: zip
- 20:58Jon: we do, we do sort of skip over them being taken to live
- 21:03with their Aunt Ida and Uncle Chip
- 21:06Kearns: and the
- 21:06Jon: and, yep.
- 21:08And the monkey, they let the monkey get another kill in
- 21:11before they throw it in the will.
- 21:14Kearns: Oh really?
- 21:14Who does it kill?
- 21:15Jon: Uncle Chip.
- 21:17Ryan: Yep.
- 21:17Kearns: It killed Uncle Chip.
- 21:18How did I
- 21:19Jon: Yeah.
- 21:20Ryan: Well, the, the horses trampled him on a
- 21:22Jon: Yeah.
- 21:24Kearns: That's right.
- 21:25That was like a quick cutaway.
- 21:27And then he was just goo at sleeping bag.
- 21:30Uncle Chip.
- 21:31You got, you caught it bad.
- 21:33And then when we get back to the present times,
- 21:37we don't know the monkeys been found yet, but Ida catches it bad.
- 21:42Yeah, we,
- 21:43Jon: Yeah.
- 21:43Kearns: on scene yet, but a monkey death Sure does occur
- 21:47Jon: Oh yeah,
- 21:49Ryan: I,
- 21:50Kearns: stairs
- 21:51Ryan: yep,
- 21:53Kearns: price.
- 21:53Jon: yeah.
- 21:54Ryan: about that scene.
- 21:55I was like,
- 21:56Jon: Face, face full of fish hooks and fishing lures.
- 22:00She's got the propane stove on or the gas stove on to
- 22:05Ryan: Which, it's,
- 22:07Jon: while she, while she's pulling hooks and lures out of her face
- 22:11and sterilizing them with alcohol.
- 22:16Kearns: So brutal.
- 22:17And then she, she sniff gas leak and somehow it, it just
- 22:21Jon: Uh huh.
- 22:22Kearns: of gas.
- 22:22Ryan: That's,
- 22:23Kearns: And then, uh,
- 22:25Jon: So now her face is on fire
- 22:27Kearns: Yep.
- 22:28Jon: and she, she goes, she goes running out the door steps in something.
- 22:32So now she's got like a can on her foot
- 22:35Kearns: that was pretty funny.
- 22:37Jon: and then,
- 22:39and, and trips right into the for sale sign on her house
- 22:43and gets impaled on the sign.
- 22:46Ryan: It's just, just a cr, like first for a third death.
- 22:53It's like the death's just top one another.
- 22:56You know, you go from a beheading to an aneurysm to basically
- 23:01burning little comedy and
- 23:04Kearns: Yeah,
- 23:07she catches it bad.
- 23:09She didn't,
- 23:09Jon: Yeah.
- 23:10Kearns: that.
- 23:11Ryan: Uh,
- 23:12Kearns: And, um, and we zip over to Hal.
- 23:14Ryan: that.
- 23:15Kearns: He's being a, a random Elijah Wood cameo,
- 23:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:19Kearns: and like this, not cult leader, but he is like a guru of
- 23:22sorts and he's got partial custody of
- 23:25Jon: Yep.
- 23:26Kearns: son.
- 23:27Jon: Yep.
- 23:27Kearns: White is saying that you're gonna, they're gonna sue for full custody
- 23:30and this douche bag's gonna adopt him.
- 23:32Apparently Hal's a bit of an absentee father,
- 23:35Jon: Yeah.
- 23:36Well, Hal and Bill have separately because they become estranged in the 25
- 23:42years between, but separately, they have come to the conclusion that they can't
- 23:46have real attachments in their lives.
- 23:49Hal made the mistake of having a kid, which he says was a mistake to the kid,
- 23:55Ryan: Yeah, he does.
- 23:56Jon: but, um,
- 23:58Kearns: Well, he says you were.
- 24:00He says something clever though.
- 24:01He says you were an accident, but not a mistake
- 24:05Jon: yeah.
- 24:06Ryan: accidents
- 24:08Jon: Yeah.
- 24:10Kearns: it's a clever line.
- 24:11Ryan: and a little over.
- 24:13Kearns: Didn't seem to help with,
- 24:16Jon: No, no, not at all.
- 24:19But so Hal, Hal is, you know, completely underachieving, making
- 24:24as few connections as possible like a week, a year with his kid.
- 24:29And this is set up to be the last week he has with his son Pete,
- 24:35because he's going to give up full custody to the mother and Elijah Wood.
- 24:42Kearns: and that's then he takes him a motel because why not
- 24:45Jon: Yeah.
- 24:46Kearns: Gonna spend the night at the Motel PD tomorrow, another motel.
- 24:52they arrive at the motel.
- 24:53What's, what's fun about?
- 24:55What happens there?
- 24:57Ryan: Well, he gets a call from Bill,
- 25:00Jon: yep, yep.
- 25:01Ryan: warning him about the monkey, saying it's on the loose and we get a beautiful
- 25:07woman who's just wants to take a dip in the pool, this air conditioner falls down.
- 25:15Breaks, falls into the
- 25:17Jon: narrowly, Mrs. How?
- 25:19Ryan: Okay.
- 25:20True on that.
- 25:21It does narrowly Miss Hal and then electrocutes the water, allowing
- 25:26the swimmer to jump into the pool, ignoring Hal's warning and
- 25:30exploding body parts fly everywhere.
- 25:36Kearns: Make any sense?
- 25:37Jon: No, no.
- 25:38You,
- 25:38Ryan: No.
- 25:40Jon: you, you've completely, completely have to abandon any sense
- 25:44of realism in these deaths now.
- 25:46Kearns: what's interesting about that air conditioner falling though is do
- 25:50you think the monkey was going for hell or do you think because I don't
- 25:53think the monkey makes mistakes.
- 25:54Oh, you
- 25:54Jon: No,
- 25:55Kearns: going for,
- 25:56Jon: I think Hal just got out of the way.
- 25:59Kearns: wow.
- 25:59Because I don't think the monkey missed
- 26:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:02Although,
- 26:03Ryan: be
- 26:03Jon: I mean, as they had theorized when they were kids, the monkey
- 26:09doesn't come for the key turner.
- 26:11And at that point, how maybe the most recent key turner,
- 26:17Kearns: is that before or after the dude buys it at the, uh, yard sale.
- 26:20Jon: it's about the same.
- 26:23Kearns: Okay.
- 26:23Jon: It it,
- 26:24Kearns: might
- 26:24Jon: yeah.
- 26:25No, bill doesn't get it till a little bit later.
- 26:29Kearns: Okay.
- 26:30Ryan: Okay.
- 26:33Okay, so then that would make sense.
- 26:35That's maybe close calls.
- 26:37I feel it.
- 26:38We're not dealing with like final destination where it's
- 26:40like, okay, you miss like this
- 26:43Jon: No.
- 26:43Ryan: gonna die in the next scene.
- 26:45Like I feel like it could be possible.
- 26:47Accidents can happen, but I
- 26:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:49Ryan: since he was the last one to turn the key,
- 26:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:52Ryan: gonna die.
- 26:53Jon: You know what?
- 26:55I'm gonna, I'm gonna change my, I don't think it missed, I think
- 26:58it purposely missed how, just to remind him of its existence.
- 27:06Kearns: Got it.
- 27:08Jon: I,
- 27:09Ryan: that.
- 27:10Kearns: That could be it.
- 27:12Uh,
- 27:13Ryan: The,
- 27:13Kearns: did work.
- 27:14Ryan: clever.
- 27:16It's very clever
- 27:16Kearns: That's
- 27:17Ryan: it's,
- 27:17Kearns: the thing.
- 27:17And it's, it's a thin veil of, with the ridiculousness of the
- 27:21Jon: mm-hmm.
- 27:22Kearns: like that, but there's meaning hidden in the movie.
- 27:24There's more to it.
- 27:26you would think, and as you're watching, you don't wanna miss it.
- 27:29So you're
- 27:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:30Kearns: you're hyper aware of things and pretty cool.
- 27:33It keeps you riveted for sure.
- 27:35It's
- 27:35Jon: Yeah.
- 27:36Kearns: done for what?
- 27:37It's let's get back to Andy Wilkes real quick.
- 27:40Andy Wilkes is the character of misery, and I don't know why the hell they
- 27:44decided to put her in yet A third alternate universe because she was also
- 27:48in season two as a rock, as a pseudo heroine that we actually loved her in.
- 27:53why?
- 27:53Why Annie Wilkes?
- 27:54Why?
- 27:56Why?
- 27:56Ryan: nod.
- 27:56Maybe
- 27:58Jon: Yeah.
- 27:59Ryan: to kill off.
- 28:00Kearns: She's not even that epic of a character.
- 28:03Jon: It, but it,
- 28:04Kearns: character.
- 28:05Jon: but it's a, it's a recognizable king name.
- 28:09Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:09Kearns: I guess that makes sense, but that makes even dumber.
- 28:13Ryan: Would, would you have been happier if it was a male named Roland?
- 28:18Kearns: No.
- 28:19If anybody else that is recognizable, that would be a nice homage.
- 28:25There's plenty of other female Lizzie story.
- 28:28You familiar with Ugg?
- 28:30That's girl.
- 28:33Jon: But I mean, is is,
- 28:38is Annie Wilkes the most recognizable of his female characters?
- 28:43Kearns: especially after Castle Rock season.
- 28:45She might be, besides
- 28:47Jon: mean
- 28:47Ryan: Bates,
- 28:51Kearns: it,
- 28:55Ryan: at least her death was quick and it was cool.
- 28:57I
- 28:58Jon: mm-hmm.
- 29:00Kearns: it was cool.
- 29:00Ryan: by love and hibachi.
- 29:04Kearns: And hibachi.
- 29:05She was the best babysitter ever apparently.
- 29:07What did she say?
- 29:08They were, they were willful.
- 29:09They're, so, she said some really funny phrase about the boys being
- 29:13shithead, they're so willful.
- 29:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:16Kearns: They
- 29:17Jon: Yep.
- 29:17Kearns: things.
- 29:17But anyway, back to the present.
- 29:18So we're up with the, um, Hal and his son Pete are now forced to move motels
- 29:24Jon: Yep.
- 29:25And they, they go home to, they go home to Caco to at Bill's request to see
- 29:32if the monkey is in Aunt Ida's house.
- 29:35Kearns: and he is not, as we know,
- 29:37Jon: The monkey.
- 29:38Kearns: by the,
- 29:39Jon: Yep.
- 29:39this fun little scene where Hal meets the real estate agent and, you know,
- 29:44he's kind of directing her at, to where he wants to look, to look for the monkey
- 29:49Ryan: Yes,
- 29:50Jon: and well
- 29:53Ryan: they find a
- 29:53Jon: wrong closet,
- 29:55Kearns: what did they find in the closet, John?
- 29:57Jon: I a booby trapped shotgun
- 30:02that.
- 30:03Kearns: where um, bill gets the ideas for the booby traps because
- 30:07he, he home alones his place too.
- 30:09Jon: I think Bill has been living in that place for a while, and just gradually,
- 30:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:17Jon: eh
- 30:18Kearns: He had some good trip wires set up with
- 30:21Jon: mm-hmm.
- 30:22Kearns: goodies.
- 30:23Jon: Yep.
- 30:24Yep.
- 30:25Ryan: Yep.
- 30:28But do you notice that it barely misses Hal too?
- 30:32The shotgun blast,
- 30:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:33Ryan: he, it misses him by that much.
- 30:36Rewatching it again, it's like very sly.
- 30:38And then you just see her Barbara explode and it's like, oh, okay.
- 30:43Jon: Yep.
- 30:44Yeah.
- 30:45Ryan: you're messing with like a lot here, dude.
- 30:48And he knows it, but it's like, he also warned her.
- 30:52'cause I feel like he, he knew he had a, he had a feeling.
- 30:55Uh,
- 30:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:58Oh yeah.
- 30:59I, I mean, I, it's clear it quickly becomes clear from this
- 31:03point that Bill wants, Hal did,
- 31:05Ryan: yes.
- 31:06Kearns: very much so.
- 31:07Jon: because he's, he's put together, he's put it together, he's put together
- 31:12that Hal turned the key, the killed mom.
- 31:15I,
- 31:16Kearns: is he aware or does he assume that Hal did it's kill
- 31:19him yet, or Hal tells him later?
- 31:20Jon: I think he's assumed it the whole time.
- 31:22Yeah.
- 31:23Kearns: yeah.
- 31:25Anyway, the, the father son, there's a dynamic building going on that sons
- 31:29resentful, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 31:32they continue forward and they're basically just learning
- 31:34more about what's going on.
- 31:35Well, how feeds a little bit more information to PD as we go about what the
- 31:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:40Kearns: with the monkey why he's a deadbeat dad, because
- 31:43he was protecting him from,
- 31:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:46Kearns: we, I think, I don't we're skipping much, right?
- 31:49If right to where he grunge, abduct,
- 31:54Ryan: Oh, Ricky.
- 31:55Kearns: I think we're right about
- 31:56Ryan: Ricky.
- 31:57Jon: Yeah, we're pretty much, we get, um, Hal's Bos gets killed
- 32:03in a vending machine accident.
- 32:06Ryan: well,
- 32:06Kearns: pushing, what, what was what he in that vending machine.
- 32:11Ryan: he was buying vape juice.
- 32:13He was buying vape juice and it doesn't work.
- 32:15He hits the machine, turns around and hits a rake.
- 32:19The rake, what?
- 32:20What is a rake doing in the middle of a building?
- 32:22First off, but he hits a rake and the vape just goes right down his
- 32:25throat and it's just lodged there.
- 32:28Anti-smoking ad right there.
- 32:30Done very
- 32:31Kearns: Yeah, it's pretty, pretty good stuff.
- 32:33then we get, what was his name?
- 32:35Rico
- 32:36Jon: Ricky?
- 32:37Ricky.
- 32:39Kearns: Ricky's fun.
- 32:41Ryan: We just had a Ricky and uh, sleepaway camp.
- 32:44Jon: Yep.
- 32:44Ryan: that episode out.
- 32:45Guys.
- 32:46Like subscribe.
- 32:49Jon: Yep.
- 32:49So
- 32:50Ryan: I.
- 32:51Jon: Ricky got the monkey at, uh, ida's estate Sale for dirt cheap, and
- 32:56then sold it to Bill who had, who had a personal ad looking for the monkey.
- 33:02Ryan: Mrs. Monkey.
- 33:03Jon: Mrs. Monkey.
- 33:06Kearns: So he gets the monkey.
- 33:08then he decides he wants it back because he looked into its eyes and he
- 33:11saw like memories of his father, which
- 33:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:14Kearns: funny.
- 33:15And so he tries to get it back.
- 33:17Bill says Go squat.
- 33:19Um, so he decides he's going to abduct Hal and Pete and get
- 33:24them to get the monkey forehead
- 33:25Jon: Yep.
- 33:26Ryan: Yes.
- 33:27Kearns: shows up with a little tiny gun and, uh, abducts them and drives
- 33:33over to where he knows Bill lives.
- 33:35That's good for Hal 'cause Hal didn't know where Bill was.
- 33:38Jon: Yep.
- 33:38Ryan: No.
- 33:39So everything goes full circle at that scene
- 33:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:42Ryan: Ricky sends little Petey off to do his dirty work 'cause
- 33:46of the little dog door, the little
- 33:48Jon: Yep.
- 33:49Ryan: door, and.
- 33:51While that's going on, he's going around these home alone traps.
- 33:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:56Ryan: Ricky talking to Hal and they're having like this heart to heart moment, I
- 34:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:01Ryan: Like he's
- 34:02Jon: And,
- 34:02Ryan: my dad left me.
- 34:03Your dad left me.
- 34:05it's
- 34:06Jon: and I, I mean, you know, it's coming the whole scene.
- 34:11Ricky's like scratching his head with the gun and like, you just
- 34:15don't know how Ricky's gonna get it.
- 34:17You know, he's going to,
- 34:19Kearns: You know?
- 34:20Ryan: that was gonna.
- 34:21Jon: you're almost sure he is gonna shoot himself in the head, but then
- 34:24that would be too simple for this movie.
- 34:27Kearns: Right.
- 34:27And boy does he not shoot himself in the head.
- 34:30He almost shoots everything else.
- 34:31Jon: Yep.
- 34:32Kearns: But that seems great with the, I mean, I just had to deal
- 34:35with a bunch of hornet's nests too.
- 34:37So the scene was even funnier to me.
- 34:40Jon: Yep.
- 34:40Kearns: a big bee's nest, Pete goes inside 'cause he can fit through the doggy door,
- 34:44and then there's a bee's nest right in front of the car that they just happen to
- 34:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:48Mm-hmm.
- 34:51Kearns: size and uh,
- 34:53Jon: And Bill is, bill is inside trying to convince PD to turn the key.
- 34:58Kearns: mm-hmm.
- 35:00And then outside, um, Ricky, Bobby shoots the gun off by accident, goes through
- 35:06the windshield and the hornet's nest
- 35:08Jon: Yep.
- 35:09Ryan: if he wasn't, if he
- 35:10Jon: As the key is turned
- 35:11Ryan: left.
- 35:12Yeah.
- 35:13Kearns: key Yeah.
- 35:16Jon: and,
- 35:16Kearns: they do this step is hilarious.
- 35:21It is so funny.
- 35:24Well, it's a laser beam of condensed wasps that shoot out of the nest
- 35:29through the hole in the windshield and directly into Ricky's mouth.
- 35:33Jon: Which is really, I mean, I hadn't really thought about this until we
- 35:36started talking another near miss for how.
- 35:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:40Ryan: it is.
- 35:42Kearns: It's three now he almost got shot like six times in the car.
- 35:46Jon: Yeah.
- 35:46Ryan: the, the
- 35:47Jon: I mean, the bullet apparently missed him too.
- 35:50Kearns: Since Bill is turning the key and Bill is a twin.
- 35:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:55Kearns: discussion that could be here,
- 35:57Jon: Yeah.
- 35:58Ryan: could work.
- 35:58Kearns: I It's that be the writer thought of that and was like the nerds.
- 36:04Jon: Uhhuh.
- 36:05Ryan: No, but it that does, that does make sense.
- 36:07'cause they're identical.
- 36:08If they're identical twins.
- 36:10Oh, okay.
- 36:11And that's because I was thinking about this in the
- 36:14beginning, maybe does you Sure.
- 36:17Bill doesn't have it when he's at the pool, because then that would make sense
- 36:21if he turns it, he's identical twin.
- 36:23That's why it's missing Hal each time,
- 36:26Jon: It's,
- 36:27Ryan: it.
- 36:27Jon: yeah, it's really unclear who has it.
- 36:30Who has it at that moment.
- 36:32Yeah.
- 36:32Bill could have had it by then and been turning.
- 36:37Ryan: Just identical twin theory.
- 36:38That's a, that's a good one.
- 36:40Jon: Yeah.
- 36:42Kearns: It is a good one.
- 36:44Jon: Yeah.
- 36:44Perhaps their, their DNA has confused the monkey.
- 36:50Kearns: I'm just gonna keep saying it.
- 36:51Ryan: The monkey.
- 36:51Jon: The monkey.
- 36:53Kearns: Hal gets out of the car and he mans up and goes to say PD the
- 36:57most, unfortunately named son ever.
- 36:59And is inside.
- 37:02They have this big reckoning moment.
- 37:04It's kind of, it's everything you already know, but it's a fun scene.
- 37:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:08Ryan: Yep.
- 37:08Kearns: uh, what's his name?
- 37:09Theo?
- 37:11Uh, the dude plays his hat.
- 37:14Theo James is a good actor and he
- 37:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:17Kearns: in roles.
- 37:18Um,
- 37:19Ryan: Yes.
- 37:21Jon: And you start to hear the chaos outside.
- 37:25Ryan: Yep.
- 37:25Jon: a plane crash and sirens and things.
- 37:28You can tell something's going on outside already.
- 37:32Kearns: and the.
- 37:32Ryan: went outta control.
- 37:34Jon: But inside, you almost get to this like, reconciliation between Hal and Bill.
- 37:41They almost get there.
- 37:43Kearns: they did.
- 37:44Jon: Yeah.
- 37:45Kearns: I would rubber stamp it and say they did reconcile.
- 37:49Um, and then the funny scene where he does the same kids where
- 37:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:54Yeah.
- 37:55Yeah.
- 37:55And, and you, get Bill with the, you know, you killed my mom.
- 38:00You killed my mom.
- 38:01And Hal finally explaining to him she was my mom too.
- 38:07And Bill's, Bill's sort of like dimwitted realization that, oh
- 38:13yeah, that was your mom too.
- 38:17Ryan: it took him
- 38:17Kearns: Makes sense, right?
- 38:19Ryan: it.
- 38:2025 years.
- 38:24Kearns: So,
- 38:24Ryan: But
- 38:25Kearns: um, they live happily after and they become best friends
- 38:28and no, that's not what happens.
- 38:30Jon: No, no, no.
- 38:32Well, Bill's traps come back to haunt him.
- 38:37Ryan: Yes, they
- 38:37Kearns: He's got a.
- 38:39Jon: Yep.
- 38:41And
- 38:41Kearns: this, the volley ball get primed inside of
- 38:46Jon: mm-hmm.
- 38:46Mm-hmm.
- 38:47Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 38:49Jon: Yep.
- 38:50And the king.
- 38:51Ryan: off.
- 38:51Kearns: blows head off.
- 38:53Jon: With the, with the bowling ball with their mom's name on it.
- 38:59Kearns: Oh, perfect.
- 39:00Ryan: it 10 times better.
- 39:02Kearns: Perfect.
- 39:03Uh, then you're like, alright, movie's over and I thought they
- 39:07were just gonna cut the black and that was the funny ending.
- 39:09But
- 39:09Jon: Uhhuh?
- 39:10Kearns: to go out and, um, they, they decided to show what all the
- 39:14chaos going on in the neighborhood afterwards is pretty funny.
- 39:18Jon: You have dead parachutist.
- 39:21Ryan: Yep,
- 39:22Jon: You have a guy with a impelled by a surfboard.
- 39:25Ryan: yep.
- 39:25Jon: have a woman.
- 39:26Kearns: Also on, is he
- 39:28Jon: You know, you have a flaming baby carriage
- 39:32Kearns: oh.
- 39:35Jon: and a as all this is going on, Hal, Hal proves that he is his mom's son.
- 39:41Let's go dancing
- 39:43Ryan: Yep.
- 39:44Kearns: Yep, let's go dancing.
- 39:45Ryan: But
- 39:46Jon: then
- 39:46Kearns: And, uh,
- 39:48Jon: then you think it's over and it's still not over.
- 39:51Kearns: yeah, that's John's favorites because there were, there were shots
- 39:55of these troop of teenage or, uh, cheerleaders throughout the whole
- 39:59movie doing, you know, random cheers at
- 40:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:01Kearns: stuff.
- 40:02uh, they were hanging outta the bus, shaking their pompoms and yelling.
- 40:05And then another, a truck goes by and just cuts 'em all in hands.
- 40:08And that's the end of the movie.
- 40:10But there is a big thing that Ryan wants to talk about before we,
- 40:13we wrap up that that's the end.
- 40:16do get a little bit of a deeper, deeper cameo.
- 40:19Ryan: Yes, we do.
- 40:20Uh, right before, I think right before the bus scene, we have a pale, black eyed
- 40:26man riding a horse who is supposed to represent the pale horseman, uh, death.
- 40:30And he slowly walks by acknowledging
- 40:34Kearns: Let's pause this.
- 40:35You say pale black guy,
- 40:38Ryan: no, a pale black guy, man.
- 40:40That's what I'm reading from the Wikipedia source right here.
- 40:46Kearns: guy.
- 40:47Jon: It did.
- 40:48Ryan: hold on,
- 40:51hold on, hold on.
- 40:51We're gonna on this right now.
- 40:53So
- 40:55Kearns: Don't this Be honest.
- 40:57Jon: No, no.
- 40:59We should keep this.
- 41:01Ryan: a pale,
- 41:05Jon: No, he was really white.
- 41:11Ryan: a pale black eye man.
- 41:16There we go.
- 41:18OSA represent Death.
- 41:19The Pale Horseman walks by and acknowledges Hal and Petey.
- 41:23It's kind of like acknowledgement, like they hold death in their hands.
- 41:27The monkey, of course, as we acknowledge spring's death, it's random, doesn't it
- 41:32go after the person who twists the key?
- 41:34Of course.
- 41:35But it is death and I feel the pale horse at the end.
- 41:38It saying, you hold this reign too.
- 41:41for giving me this business, but you got something very important that
- 41:45you're gonna have to be careful And I know they're not doing a sequel.
- 41:50Thank God movie
- 41:51Kearns: They can't,
- 41:53Ryan: No, they can't.
- 41:54Jon: No, you have nobody left, nobody left.
- 41:58Kearns: in theory, this is the end of.
- 42:00Theoretically this like, uh, Neil Gaman wrote, we Get Them For You Wholesale,
- 42:04which starts out with a guy trying to get a few people killed from an ad in
- 42:07a, in a, the Yellow Pages over in the uk, whatever their version of that is.
- 42:12And eventually he, he gets such good deals on the killings that
- 42:16he continues to like double it and double it for 40% off or whatever it
- 42:20is until he just destroys the world.
- 42:22And I, I get that vibe from this.
- 42:24It feels like this is cascading out of control and I don't know
- 42:27how you're supposed to stop it.
- 42:28I know the dad hit it with a flamethrower at the beginning of the movie, but
- 42:32Jon: Which only paused it,
- 42:35Ryan: Yes.
- 42:36Jon: I mean,
- 42:40is the way for that family to not exist anymore because the
- 42:45monkey is tied to the family.
- 42:48Kearns: which is interesting.
- 42:50Now, does it get to, like, let's say all they all die, does it go to a new family?
- 42:55The next people who get get it, he just attaches to them?
- 42:59Or does he just kill everybody in the world?
- 43:00Right now,
- 43:01Ryan: Oh, gotta think of it like it's Stephen King universe, right?
- 43:06So you gotta think of all that weirdness, right?
- 43:09of it, I was thinking about like the shine.
- 43:11Because like the monkey's attached to 'em, the shine, right?
- 43:14The shine is attached to random individuals.
- 43:17It could be something like that where once this family's done it,
- 43:21randomizes goes to another family.
- 43:24It just appears
- 43:25Kearns: shine is more like biological.
- 43:27The shine's like the force that's like you're born with it.
- 43:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:31Kearns: Like psychic powers.
- 43:32Yeah.
- 43:33This is a monkey.
- 43:34Ryan: that ran well.
- 43:36a killer monkey.
- 43:38Kearns: It's a, it's a killer monkey with a demon attached to it.
- 43:40That's what I think,
- 43:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:42Kearns: but
- 43:42Ryan: especially.
- 43:43Kearns: wouldn't, I can't compare it to because it's just so different to me.
- 43:48I get like that.
- 43:49You have the shine or you have the monkey, like I have the mouse.
- 44:00Ryan: well, you know, I was, now I'm thinking about it.
- 44:03When he cuts up the monkey, you, you notice the blood that's coming out of it.
- 44:07Jon: Yeah.
- 44:08Ryan: That that was, that was interesting too.
- 44:11I, I
- 44:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:12Ryan: can't wrap my head around that.
- 44:15Kearns: We should, uh,
- 44:15Ryan: Like
- 44:16Kearns: I don't know if that's for movie effect.
- 44:17Well, yeah, it kind of is.
- 44:18Most of this stuff isn't in the short story.
- 44:21We should, we should lead with that.
- 44:23This is a short, short story.
- 44:25It's not very long at all.
- 44:26I, maybe 5,000 to 7,500 words.
- 44:29It's pretty short and a lot of this stuff is added, including the pale rider
- 44:34Ryan: yep.
- 44:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:35Kearns: that is not in the story.
- 44:37Um, so
- 44:39Ryan: are there, like the
- 44:41Kearns: yeah.
- 44:42Ryan: and all that, but everything else is just, yeah.
- 44:46I
- 44:47Kearns: This is like taking, like they bus up and threw frosting and
- 44:50stuff and made like a, a four-tier cake out of what was a bunt cake.
- 44:54And not to say that the
- 44:55Jon: Yeah.
- 44:55Kearns: good, but it wasn't this, it was not this movie.
- 44:58Jon: No.
- 44:59Kearns: It was a, it was a red coning of the monkey's paw kind of thing.
- 45:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:04Kearns: was kind of like that.
- 45:06And maybe even a nod to that story I was mentioning about gay men earlier.
- 45:10'cause that was a really popular story back then, right
- 45:13around when this was written.
- 45:14So that could have been it too.
- 45:16But yeah, did with it was great.
- 45:19I love the movie.
- 45:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:21Ryan: Same.
- 45:22Jon: It's, it's,
- 45:23Kearns: no,
- 45:24Jon: it's definitely a fun watch.
- 45:26They.
- 45:26Kearns: yeah,
- 45:27Ryan: Yes.
- 45:27Kearns: no definitive ends.
- 45:28Like no explanation of the end is kind of nice too, of how it wraps up.
- 45:32Jon: Yeah.
- 45:33Kearns: closure, if it's just dead, they're done.
- 45:36Uh, who knows?
- 45:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:40How and PD could be the last two people on earth.
- 45:44Kearns: Kind of.
- 45:45PD would make it
- 45:48Jon: Yes.
- 45:49Ryan: his glasses
- 45:50Jon: I mean,
- 45:51Ryan: fit like purchase Meredith in the Twilight Zone.
- 45:59Kearns: through's true.
- 46:00But yeah.
- 46:01Guys, that's the monkey.
- 46:02Jon: that's the monkey.
- 46:04Kearns: We're gonna run right into our top lives tonight.
- 46:07I'm it 40 minutes and 28 seconds into the show.
- 46:11We are running the end.
- 46:15Let's go.
- 46:17Ryan: So this week I went with top five eight movies.
- 46:21I said Ape, not Eight ape.
- 46:24So
- 46:25Kearns: It did.
- 46:27Ryan: I, yeah, that, that top five eight movies.
- 46:30It comes before nine after seven, um, but top five eight movies.
- 46:36And I'm gonna start off with, um, it's gonna be a mix comedy action adventure.
- 46:41And I'm gonna start off with Con Skull Island.
- 46:43Um, that's my number five.
- 46:46I do enjoy it.
- 46:47Uh, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, come on.
- 46:52John Goodman, Bree Larson, um, lot of big names.
- 46:56John C. Reilly, who's great supporting character in the, in the movie.
- 47:00But they all go to Skull Island.
- 47:03It's in the Godzilla universe, the America version.
- 47:06And they can go investigate SC Skull Island and meet
- 47:10King Kong for the first time.
- 47:11And it's a different, I guess, interpretation.
- 47:14'cause most of the time you see him go to Skull Island, they
- 47:17take him back to New York City.
- 47:18He falls off the Empire State Building.
- 47:20That's it.
- 47:21This one, you see them kinda.
- 47:24Go in his element and it makes Kong more of a hero, which I, I liked, instead of
- 47:29making him that like, feared monster.
- 47:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:32Ryan: the good guy.
- 47:33Jon: Well, that, that's kind of where that whole series goes with Kong.
- 47:38Ryan: Yes.
- 47:39Kearns: like the, the beta, the beta alpha,
- 47:42Jon: Yeah.
- 47:42He,
- 47:43Kearns: call it that, that monster stuff is a hot mess.
- 47:45That's another thing where they really went, they went in a direction.
- 47:49They sure did.
- 47:50Ryan: I,
- 47:51Kearns: snow
- 47:51Jon: they made some choices.
- 47:52Kearns: good.
- 47:53I mean, it's still good, but if you like that kind of thing.
- 47:56But they, they showed us with minus one that what the monster
- 47:59verse was like, you know,
- 48:01Jon: Yeah.
- 48:01Kearns: 12 minus one
- 48:02Jon: Yeah.
- 48:03Kearns: any movie.
- 48:03The Monster verse had,
- 48:05Ryan: Agreed.
- 48:05Kearns: was good.
- 48:07Island was a good one.
- 48:09Ryan: And real quick, um, minus one is getting a sequel.
- 48:13Jon: Yep.
- 48:13Ryan: for that.
- 48:14Jon: Yep.
- 48:14Starts filming at the end of August.
- 48:17Kearns: The green
- 48:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:21And I think they're also doing a sequel to Shin Godzilla,
- 48:26Ryan: Yes.
- 48:27Jon: so
- 48:29Kearns: is exciting.
- 48:30Jon: plenty more of that coming.
- 48:33Ryan: there's gonna be good Godzilla movies coming out and
- 48:35Kearns: It's so hot right now.
- 48:37Ryan: Godzilla Kong, but
- 48:39Kearns: forget, there's also Space Godzilla coming to the
- 48:41shitty monster verse with all like the cage fighting monsters.
- 48:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:45Kearns: So that's cool.
- 48:48Ryan: I, I
- 48:48Kearns: That's cool too.
- 48:49Ryan: versus Con, and I'm happy I stopped there.
- 48:52But
- 48:52Kearns: gets pretty bad.
- 48:53Ryan: pick, well,
- 48:55Kearns: Thera good, but anyway, yeah.
- 48:58Ryan: uh, the, the door that Godzilla versus Con, that one, yes.
- 49:01And Um, but number four is his favorite of mine.
- 49:06Um, 96.
- 49:08Jason Alexander.
- 49:09Faye Dunaway.
- 49:10Rupert Everett, Paul Rubins.
- 49:12Dustin Dunton checks in.
- 49:16Kearns: Checks in my God.
- 49:19Ryan: uh, I, I love that movie.
- 49:20It's just, it's just slapstick comedy for a kid to laugh at all day.
- 49:25And it's just, it's a special place in my heart.
- 49:28And I had to put it on my eight movies.
- 49:30But at number four though, because I mean my next three, you can't really top.
- 49:35And at number three, we're gonna get loose every which way, but loose.
- 49:39Starring Clint Eastwood as a truck driver with his buddy who, oh, no, no.
- 49:45I gotta,
- 49:50now I gotta my number one.
- 49:52My number one is good.
- 49:53So, and I'm not fronting on that as the kids would say,
- 49:57but I know every which way.
- 49:58L loose is just a classic.
- 50:00Again, him beating up the biker gang, and this was at a time when Clint
- 50:04Eastwood, he's coming off that whole like badass act of like dirty Harry,
- 50:08the spaghetti western, and he turns into a fighting truck driver with a
- 50:12pet orangutan or best friend orangutan.
- 50:14number two, I am going with the 2005 version of King Kong.
- 50:19Um,
- 50:20Kearns: Another
- 50:21Ryan: I, yeah, this is the, the re, the third remake, um,
- 50:26or second remake, I'm sorry.
- 50:27Uh, the first one coming out from the seventies, um, 1977.
- 50:32Um, this one.
- 50:37Jon: Come on.
- 50:38Mighty Joe Young.
- 50:41Kearns: in the Zoom days, we.
- 50:43Ryan: age it.
- 50:46Nah, but King.
- 50:49No, you're good.
- 50:49Uh, king Kong was very big, uh, when it came out in 2005.
- 50:53Um, it was a lot of big movies and that, it just had a big feel to it and I feel
- 50:57like that was one of the final movies in recent times to have a big feel.
- 51:02my number one,
- 51:03Jon: Hold on.
- 51:04Hold on.
- 51:04I, I have to point out that is my third favorite of the Kong origin stories.
- 51:14'cause I love the seventies one.
- 51:15I grew up on the 71 seventies one.
- 51:17Ryan: yeah.
- 51:18Jon: My dad took us to a premiere of that one.
- 51:21Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 51:22Jon: Yeah, we, we had like all these like posters that used to
- 51:26freak me out when I was a kid.
- 51:28Like it was awesome.
- 51:29Kearns: closeup of the face posters and stuff back then.
- 51:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:33Kearns: They were talking the stop motion that, I mean, that was classic, classic,
- 51:37Jon: And he, he's not on the Empire State Building in that one.
- 51:40He's on the World Trade Center
- 51:43Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:44Yeah, it was.
- 51:45Jon: and the, and the, the OG one is the best.
- 51:50Like, it's just a great, great bit of filmmaking, especially
- 51:54Ryan: Yes.
- 51:56Jon: when it was.
- 51:58Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:58Big.
- 51:59taking the model
- 52:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:01Kearns: off screen.
- 52:02Jon: All right, now you can get to number one.
- 52:05Ryan: Oh man.
- 52:07one, like I said, it's those damn dirty apes.
- 52:11It's the original Planet of the Apes that's, I watched, I,
- 52:17Jon: you swerved me.
- 52:19Ryan: I loved that film.
- 52:21My, my uncle showed it to me when I was very young.
- 52:23He was a big player of the Apes guy.
- 52:24He loves 'em all.
- 52:25Um, I love the first one.
- 52:27I love Charlton Heston and just.
- 52:30As a kid because I, he was like, I watched it at five, six.
- 52:34You can watch it at six.
- 52:36And as a 6-year-old, it's, it's, it's hard to get through, but I got through it and
- 52:43I can just, you remember certain scenes.
- 52:45You remember Dr. Zaas and, know, just, it's so good.
- 52:51I don't wanna spoil it.
- 52:52This one I don't wanna spoil.
- 52:54I mean, you should have seen it.
- 52:55It came out in
- 52:56Jon: I mean, yeah.
- 52:57Ryan: but
- 52:57Jon: Yeah.
- 52:58You have 57 years.
- 53:01Ryan: all right, fuck it.
- 53:02Just Charlton Heston on the beach, just screaming.
- 53:05And even as a kid, I felt that.
- 53:07I was like, oh man, apes took over the world.
- 53:10This
- 53:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:11Mm-hmm.
- 53:12Ryan: But it's
- 53:12Jon: You hit,
- 53:13Ryan: this makes so good.
- 53:15Jon: you hit a whole bunch of my childhood trauma because.
- 53:21Recurring nightmare.
- 53:22When I was a kid, the nice old couple across the street from us
- 53:26turned into the planet of the Apes.
- 53:29Apes, and it used to, I used to have that dream probably two or three times a month.
- 53:35Kearns: Harry and the Henderson showed front.
- 53:42Jon: It was rough.
- 53:43It was
- 53:44Ryan: see
- 53:45Jon: The apes was rough when I was a kid, but I, I love the whole series.
- 53:48Like it doesn't matter.
- 53:50Even the bad ones are good.
- 53:52Ryan: and that also real quick, stars an alums of ours, Roddy McDowell.
- 53:57Jon: Yep.
- 54:01Alumni.
- 54:02Ryan: met alumni.
- 54:03We mentioned him.
- 54:04was Inright Night.
- 54:05Fright Night too.
- 54:10He was on, on the
- 54:10Kearns: John, you
- 54:18Jon: Theist,
- 54:19Ryan: the.
- 54:21Kearns: don't turn off if
- 54:25Jon: make sure Roddy McDowell is there.
- 54:32Kearns: for this.
- 54:38Jon: So I went with a, what I'm gonna call a top five plus one because five, five
- 54:44of the items on the list are soundtrack songs, and number one is a movie.
- 54:50so my, top five plus one is a tribute to Ozzy.
- 54:56Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 54:58Ryan: Okay.
- 54:58Jon: Yeah.
- 54:59So the first five are all soundtracks that he or Sabbath appear on.
- 55:05So number six.
- 55:07Almost famous.
- 55:09Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 55:10Jon: you get paranoid and Sweetleaf.
- 55:12Um, I can't find where Sweetleaf played, but Paranoid was, um, William
- 55:17is going to interview Black Sabbath and it's playing in the background.
- 55:23Ryan: Yep.
- 55:24Jon: So, um, my number five is The Hangover Part three very
- 55:31forgettable movie, but you get NIB and
- 55:35Ryan: Yes.
- 55:36Jon: at at um, out as, um, Chow's party is going south towards
- 55:41the end and it finishes with him jumping off of Caesar's Palace.
- 55:46Ryan: yep.
- 55:46That's when they jump from the window.
- 55:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:50my number three is a movie we've mentioned before, but Ozzy, uh, cemetery man,
- 55:57his song Hell Raiser plays every time there's a motorcycle on the screen.
- 56:02Kearns: Oh, that's pretty sick.
- 56:03Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:06Um, my number two is Ryan's number five or 4K Skull Island.
- 56:15Ryan: Yep,
- 56:15Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 56:16Ryan: five.
- 56:17Jon: Yep.
- 56:18You get,
- 56:19Kearns: Where they're fighting.
- 56:20Are they running
- 56:21Jon: you get paranoid while they're, uh, dropping the bombs to geomap
- 56:25the island, and, and it ends with their, the first appearance of
- 56:32Kong to them, which is a big hand.
- 56:35And then my number one is the movie Trick or Treat, not
- 56:39trick or treat, trick or Treat.
- 56:44Which is so, um, and it's kind of fitting the death of a heavy metal icon leaves
- 56:49a bullied teenage boy heartbroken.
- 56:52Even worse, he realizes he may be the only person who can prevent the
- 56:57rocker from returning from the dead.
- 57:01Um, Ozzy plays Reverend Aaron Strom, who's, uh, like this
- 57:07ridiculous, like TV appearing priest who's like, moralizing it.
- 57:13It's such a, such a funny role to see Ozzy in,
- 57:18Ryan: What year did it come out?
- 57:19I have to ask.
- 57:20Jon: I think it was like 85, 86.
- 57:22Gene Simmons is in it too.
- 57:24Like, it's like,
- 57:27Ryan: so
- 57:27Jon: this is like, this is like peak satanic panic, afraid of Ozzy
- 57:34snorting ants, like that whole thing.
- 57:37Like that's, that's where we are in time with this, and he's on there.
- 57:42Playing a pretty pitch perfect British version of like a, Billy Graham?
- 57:49Kearns: Yeah.
- 57:50Ryan: Perfect.
- 57:52Kearns: And then what's the plus one?
- 57:54Jon: Yep.
- 57:54That's the plus one.
- 57:57Ryan: Nice.
- 57:59Jon: That was the last one.
- 58:00Ryan: list.
- 58:02Jon: Oh no, I skipped one.
- 58:03Ryan: Oh
- 58:04Jon: did skip
- 58:04Ryan: was gonna say, yeah.
- 58:06Jon: one.
- 58:06I did skip one.
- 58:07My number four was Dazed and Confused
- 58:09Ryan: Yep,
- 58:10Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 58:11Yeah, that makes sense.
- 58:12Jon: because you get, you get paranoid in that one too.
- 58:15While O'Banion is enjoying his paddling adventures.
- 58:20I,
- 58:20Ryan: yep.
- 58:21Kearns: It's another good one.
- 58:22That's a great scene with the Slowmo cameras.
- 58:24Jon: yeah.
- 58:25Kearns: We had a bit of a surprise for you guys tonight though,
- 58:27because I'm doing it top five as well, because I thought he could
- 58:32Jon: Dons.
- 58:33Kearns: even king adaptations from short fiction.
- 58:37Only his short fiction though, not his other stuff.
- 58:40Ryan: Oh,
- 58:40Kearns: my favorite.
- 58:41Ryan: were asking about the Indian this earlier
- 58:43Kearns: Yes.
- 58:44Well, just a little curious about that.
- 58:46I'm just a little curious about that.
- 58:48But the first one comes from one of Ryan's favorite movies that he likes to bring up
- 58:53all the time, but we're not gonna let him talk about it because I wanna go fast.
- 58:56Goddammit, my top five doesn't take eight minutes, so I'm gonna say it
- 59:00grows on you from creep show, which is a great short story, great short story.
- 59:05Jon: That's the, that's the one with him, right?
- 59:08Kearns: right?
- 59:08Yep.
- 59:09And it's an homage to the blob.
- 59:10100% homage to the blob.
- 59:13And, uh, next is Silver Bullet.
- 59:15If you haven't seen Silver Bullet, you suck, and you won't
- 59:18stop sucking until you see it.
- 59:20Gary Bueys in it, and he plays an uncle.
- 59:22He's like, he's not the touchy in the bad place kind of uncle.
- 59:25He's that gets drunk and turns your wheelchair into a Harley kind of uncle.
- 59:30And that's what you want.
- 59:31That's what you want.
- 59:32So, silver bullet, um, isn't Fred Savage the kid in the wheelchair?
- 59:37Jon: Ah, he might be.
- 59:38Kearns: Savage.
- 59:40Ryan: I
- 59:40Kearns: It's Fred Savage.
- 59:42Um, yeah, that's, that's another phenomenal one that you gotta watch.
- 59:45The other three are a little bit more basic bitchy, but Mr.
- 59:48Harrington's phone was a really big surprise.
- 59:52Ryan: Okay.
- 59:52Kearns: it's a good story.
- 59:54It's a really good story.
- 59:55And I was surprised they did such a good job at the movie.
- 59:58was that Donald Sutherland in that who played Harrington?
- 1:00:03Jon: I didn't see that one, so I'm not sure.
- 1:00:06Kearns: I dunno if you like that one.
- 1:00:07I hope you do though.
- 1:00:08That's a good premise for a movie.
- 1:00:10It's another one where some spooky stuff happens through a cell phone.
- 1:00:15Stephen King did a novel called Cell as
- 1:00:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:18Kearns: seen the fourth one yet, but I'm putting it on the
- 1:00:20list anyway, because fuck you.
- 1:00:21That's why.
- 1:00:22And it's the Long Walk.
- 1:00:23waiting my whole life for this movie to come out
- 1:00:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:28Kearns: ready to put on my big boy pants and take a risk.
- 1:00:30Jon: Yep.
- 1:00:31Kearns: the, the trailer looks.
- 1:00:33So I'm putting that as number four.
- 1:00:35They did.
- 1:00:36I'm gonna watch,
- 1:00:37Jon: Yeah, they drive.
- 1:00:38Ryan: said
- 1:00:38Jon: was a, the trailer for that and um, the trailer for, uh, it,
- 1:00:43welcome to dairy were at, um, whatever Comic-Con was just over the weekend.
- 1:00:48So they both.
- 1:00:51Ryan: real
- 1:00:51Kearns: you think Joe Owen,
- 1:00:54Ryan: oh,
- 1:00:54Kearns: why I asked that question?
- 1:00:55I'm sorry.
- 1:00:57Ryan: They, they showed a scene from Welcome to Dairy
- 1:01:00and they, they cross a line.
- 1:01:02And how they set it up real quick, it's gonna take place, uh, backwards.
- 1:01:07So it's gonna start off, I think in the fifties.
- 1:01:09And then the next season's gonna go to the thirties every 27 years.
- 1:01:14And then the last season supposedly is gonna be the 19 hundreds
- 1:01:18introducing Pennywise to the world.
- 1:01:22Kearns: Nice.
- 1:01:22Ryan: concept going backwards 27 years.
- 1:01:27Kearns: I mean, it, it's the fourth time they're making this into film
- 1:01:32of, or on putting it on the screen.
- 1:01:35So they
- 1:01:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:36Kearns: new
- 1:01:36Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:37Kearns: can't just
- 1:01:38Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:38You can't keep going forward.
- 1:01:40You've, you know how that goes.
- 1:01:43Ryan: I need the turtle.
- 1:01:44God damn it.
- 1:01:45They keep
- 1:01:46Kearns: I mean, a turtle is one of the very few, we only
- 1:01:50see one of the great animals.
- 1:01:52It's the bear in, uh, the books.
- 1:01:54That's the only one we see.
- 1:01:56Sharq.
- 1:01:57last movie.
- 1:01:59You won't sideline me for long, or what is it?
- 1:02:01Um, get me off track for long.
- 1:02:04I don't know.
- 1:02:05I can't speak anymore.
- 1:02:06Jon: I track.
- 1:02:07Kearns: is the last one.
- 1:02:08The mist is my final one.
- 1:02:09It was, I think it's the best of his novels, uh, novelette, and I'm talking
- 1:02:14pure horror, so don't get on my case because Shaw Shank was a novela.
- 1:02:18I get it.
- 1:02:19I get it.
- 1:02:19And I know John loves it.
- 1:02:20He already confessed his love for it.
- 1:02:22Uh, he's his favorite movie.
- 1:02:24Um, but there are a lot of really good movies that are based on
- 1:02:29his full length novels as well.
- 1:02:31This
- 1:02:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:31Kearns: a short fiction, and I love the Mist because he does everything right and
- 1:02:36he's a great guy and at the end, he still has to kill his family for no reason.
- 1:02:39And I just, it tickled me.
- 1:02:42Ryan: It just, it made me so happy.
- 1:02:44Jon: I think
- 1:02:48mm-hmm.
- 1:02:49Ryan: Oh yeah, it is.
- 1:02:50Jon: Yeah, I think the mist is my favorite of his.
- 1:02:52Shorter works by a lot.
- 1:02:56Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:02:57Jon: Um, um,
- 1:02:58Kearns: story of the mist has a different ending in
- 1:03:00Jon: yeah.
- 1:03:01Kearns: the listeners don't know that, and that's also quite good.
- 1:03:04I enjoy that type of ending more because it leaves it up to
- 1:03:07you to kind of figure it out.
- 1:03:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:09Kearns: was like, no, we're gonna tell you what goes on.
- 1:03:11Jon: Yep.
- 1:03:12Kearns: You see, the Army is a quarter mile down the road and he takes a
- 1:03:1645 and he offs everybody in the car, including his son, and then the mist
- 1:03:21dissipates immediately afterward.
- 1:03:25Ryan: That scene still gets me just,
- 1:03:28Kearns: brutal.
- 1:03:28And he's just screaming.
- 1:03:29They're like, torching spider cocoons next to him, like vision
- 1:03:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:34Kearns: lads.
- 1:03:34And he's just screaming in the
- 1:03:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:37Did you watch it in black and white?
- 1:03:40Kearns: Uh, no.
- 1:03:42Jon: Yeah.
- 1:03:43Yeah.
- 1:03:45It's a, it's a, it changes the experience a little bit.
- 1:03:48I prefer the colored, ver the color version, but
- 1:03:52Kearns: That's true.
- 1:03:52There's two things mean different things.
- 1:03:54Jon: yeah.
- 1:03:54Yeah.
- 1:03:55The colorized version.
- 1:03:58Kearns: Version.
- 1:03:59This is gonna be a rough podcast for us.
- 1:04:04Jon: These are, these are misspeaks.
- 1:04:07Kearns: YouTube would like, uh, to send you a note regarding
- 1:04:12no, no, no.
- 1:04:14But yeah,
- 1:04:14Ryan: quick.
- 1:04:17The, the in good old technicolor, um, the black and white.
- 1:04:21I feel like you would, it'd be more tense.
- 1:04:25Like you hear like,
- 1:04:26Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:28Yeah.
- 1:04:28Ryan: like
- 1:04:31Kearns: is something on the side of your.
- 1:04:34Ryan: I,
- 1:04:36Kearns: John, you should get downstairs.
- 1:04:38You should get near lights.
- 1:04:39Jon: Here.
- 1:04:40Kearns: something going on in your place.
- 1:04:42No, it's down the corner.
- 1:04:43It's definitely not you at all.
- 1:04:45There's like, it's just this
- 1:04:47Ryan: right?
- 1:04:48Kearns: thing like this, but it's not a finger either.
- 1:04:51It's, yeah, I saw it.
- 1:04:52It's, it looked like it could be, it looked like a cat.
- 1:04:56it again.
- 1:04:57There It's there was it?
- 1:04:58It was right there.
- 1:04:59Ryan: are, are you fucking with us, John, please don't tell me you're fucking,
- 1:05:04Jon: Oh,
- 1:05:04Kearns: It would be John.
- 1:05:05It'd be on your right side of looking directly at your camera lens.
- 1:05:09It would be near your camera lens.
- 1:05:12Ryan: Yep.
- 1:05:12Kearns: because it's barely visible to us and it's not there right now.
- 1:05:15Ooh.
- 1:05:15This is my favorite part of tonight's show.
- 1:05:18Just slow, lean in, look around.
- 1:05:24Ryan: If it pops up and he doesn't see it, you gotta get the hell outta there.
- 1:05:28John
- 1:05:33Kearns: Nice.
- 1:05:36Well, he's, she's probably gonna make it to the next podcast,
- 1:05:38but that was my top five.
- 1:05:39That'll be in letterbox along with Ryans and Johns.
- 1:05:43Jon: And we almost got it.
- 1:05:44Eight minutes.
- 1:05:47Ryan: Yes.
- 1:05:47Kearns: Yeah, you tried bastards.
- 1:05:50John.
- 1:05:51Uh, Ryan was eight minutes, 42 seconds.
- 1:05:53John was four minutes and 21 seconds.
- 1:05:55So eat it.
- 1:05:58Ryan: Have a good night.
- 1:06:00Jon: See ya.
