- 0:10Speaker 1: Patriot It's unfiltered. Hey, guys, how's everybody doing over there? Good? Good? Okay. Mcclennan,
- 0:19Speaker 1: I got I got on a mccleanin kick yesterday afternoon,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and I started thinking about that mcclennan. His name is mcclennan.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You don't know what mccleannon is. That's what mac is
- 0:29Speaker 1: short for. That was it? That was it? That sealed
- 0:31Speaker 1: as fat? That was But he's correcting everybody else with
- 0:33Speaker 1: a long correction, and that was. I'm like, dear research,
- 0:36Speaker 1: You guys are reports. I used tops add the team.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Remember that Tennessee lineman on the sideline? Can't feel my hands?
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm freaking out. Don't you think Sirianni looks like a
- 0:49Speaker 1: cast member from three hundred? Now? I need to see
- 0:51Speaker 1: with a shirt off, Yeah, I don't know about that,
- 0:53Speaker 1: or in a loincloth, Bill BELICHICKI coaches in a cut
- 0:56Speaker 1: off hoodie blineclothing, so the line hasn't changed. And I
- 1:01Speaker 1: think the touts and the sharps are telling us something
- 1:04Speaker 1: I never know what he's talking about. I just told
- 1:07Speaker 1: this is Patriots Unfiltered, fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome
- 1:14Speaker 1: to Patriots Unfiltered. Oh, if the touts and the sharps
- 1:17Speaker 1: really knew something, it wouldn't have been four, would have
- 1:20Speaker 1: been fourteen or more forty. Right, we got a lot
- 1:24Speaker 1: to unpackage here. I mean, this is therapy. The doctor
- 1:28Speaker 1: is in, I'm here for all of you. We got
- 1:32Speaker 1: to talk about this season in this game. I don't
- 1:34Speaker 1: know if the game in particular needs a lot of talk,
- 1:38Speaker 1: because it's more like what do we do, because you know,
- 1:42Speaker 1: we got some issues and we gotta go over what
- 1:46Speaker 1: they are and what possibly the team can do about it.
- 1:49Speaker 1: But here it is. It is Tuesday here at Gilette Stadium.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We're on to twenty twenty two, our first post twenty
- 1:58Speaker 1: twenty one show, right, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's it's over
- 2:03Speaker 1: two days a week now. It's over. Just like that.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That's the problem with you know, like sports. You know
- 2:09Speaker 1: when it comes to an end, it's like so sub
- 2:12Speaker 1: falling off the tred bone. It's just we're done. One
- 2:14Speaker 1: hundred miles an hour on the highway and jaming on
- 2:16Speaker 1: the brake. Yeah, it was good to have a couple
- 2:18Speaker 1: of days, I think to kind of process it, or
- 2:20Speaker 1: try to process it after. You know, I always sleep
- 2:24Speaker 1: bad after we do the postgame show. You get home late,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but A man did I I kept waking up. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: just couldn't believe that it was as bad as it
- 2:31Speaker 1: was and that there was you know, and I held
- 2:33Speaker 1: out some hope that I mean, my key to the
- 2:36Speaker 1: game was flipped the script because it felt like this
- 2:37Speaker 1: is where it was heading. Like they just they hadn't
- 2:39Speaker 1: really shown months after the bye they beat up on Jacksonville.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Defense wasn't producing turnovers. You know, we talked about the
- 2:45Speaker 1: run stuff. But I think ultimately for this team, my
- 2:49Speaker 1: whole concern the whole year was what do they do
- 2:51Speaker 1: when there's a real team that can spread them out
- 2:53Speaker 1: and throw the ball on them. And I think that
- 2:54Speaker 1: this was really the ultimate answer that and especially exacerbated
- 2:58Speaker 1: by not having you know, Jaylen Mill. It's not that
- 3:00Speaker 1: he would have made a difference, but you know, no
- 3:02Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones, no stuff on Gilmour than no jay Len Mills.
- 3:05Speaker 1: On top of it, you basically had JC Jackson and
- 3:07Speaker 1: a bunch of other guys, and I think that was
- 3:09Speaker 1: really the kind of key weakness to this team this
- 3:12Speaker 1: year was, you know, defensively, I just don't think they
- 3:14Speaker 1: had the horses in the secondary. And certainly once the
- 3:16Speaker 1: past rush stopped producing pressure over the last few games
- 3:21Speaker 1: that they were dead in the water and they had nothing.
- 3:23Speaker 1: They had nothing again. But a team has variety. It's
- 3:26Speaker 1: tough for this defense, you know, to spread out answer
- 3:30Speaker 1: and yeah, yeah, no answers, And I mean and that's
- 3:33Speaker 1: you know, I think in retrospect, I don't really fault
- 3:35Speaker 1: them for trying to run it back, to try to
- 3:38Speaker 1: bring the band back with high Tower returning and you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: bring him a quarterback on this basically one year deal
- 3:43Speaker 1: with a bunch of I don't I don't fault them
- 3:45Speaker 1: for trying it. But I think now we've seen the
- 3:48Speaker 1: last three seasons and you know, last year a little
- 3:50Speaker 1: bit of an anomaly. But they gotta they gotta move on.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They gotta build a new defense now they have to,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and they some key pieces and it's they got a
- 3:56Speaker 1: whole plan. A big picture question, you know, and I
- 4:00Speaker 1: don't expect anyone to have the answer, But did did
- 4:03Speaker 1: h impatience hurt the Patriots this season? In other words,
- 4:08Speaker 1: let's let's let's get we gotta get back in the
- 4:11Speaker 1: playoffs right away. That did that hurt? Yeah, but you
- 4:16Speaker 1: can make an argument for that. I think so. I
- 4:18Speaker 1: think so. I mean I think that you know, the
- 4:19Speaker 1: van Noy and the Collins editions were to me. I
- 4:22Speaker 1: felt like last year you were at this inflection point where, yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you knew you were gonna turn over to Mac at
- 4:27Speaker 1: some point after you drafted him. But you know, having
- 4:29Speaker 1: those guys back in the mix, it's just down the
- 4:32Speaker 1: stretch well. And you know, and I also think that
- 4:36Speaker 1: this team is over coached on on defense in particular,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and maybe on offense too. But you know, when you
- 4:42Speaker 1: look at the defense, you know it's a collaborative effort.
- 4:45Speaker 1: That's great. Maybe there's too many voices in the room.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't know, but it just seems we're just too tentative.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You know, do you're thinking before the snap, but it
- 4:54Speaker 1: seems you you watch guys after the snap, and there's
- 4:58Speaker 1: too much thinking, especially with the line backers. You know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: too much tippy toeing around and you know there's no
- 5:05Speaker 1: like heat seeking missiles out there, you know, just going
- 5:08Speaker 1: after the ball. And you know, I don't know if
- 5:10Speaker 1: that's because of age and a lack of speed or
- 5:14Speaker 1: just overthinking things, um, you know. And like I was also,
- 5:19Speaker 1: it's like they tell the your your front guys to
- 5:22Speaker 1: play zero technique in a four three almost like that
- 5:26Speaker 1: doesn't work. If you've got to play that type of
- 5:29Speaker 1: zero technique, you have to have linebackers making plays. You know,
- 5:33Speaker 1: when you look at your statu sheet, in that type
- 5:36Speaker 1: of scheme, your linebackers should have the most tackles on
- 5:40Speaker 1: the team because they're the ones filling the holes while
- 5:42Speaker 1: the other guys aren't giving up ground. But they're trying
- 5:45Speaker 1: to blend both those techniques and it's not working. And
- 5:49Speaker 1: you know, they don't have the linebackers that are athletic
- 5:52Speaker 1: enough to make those type of plays. And I liked
- 5:54Speaker 1: Mike's point, you know about you know, the the defense
- 5:59Speaker 1: in how you know when when they get spread out
- 6:01Speaker 1: and you know, it kind of fell apart. And I
- 6:03Speaker 1: think that when you try to what you saw is
- 6:06Speaker 1: is I think this is the way the Patriots beat
- 6:08Speaker 1: a lot of teams over the last twenty years. Was
- 6:11Speaker 1: you know, there was a lot of good teams that
- 6:13Speaker 1: the Patriots played and they just said, oh, that's all
- 6:16Speaker 1: you can do or you need to do that to win. Okay,
- 6:20Speaker 1: well we'll take care of that. And I think that's
- 6:22Speaker 1: what Buffalo did. I think I think that they looked
- 6:25Speaker 1: at them and yeah, I think the Patriots there were
- 6:27Speaker 1: times the Patriots were a pretty good team this year,
- 6:30Speaker 1: but it's when they dictated the way the game was played. Yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 1: how many guys, you know, I thought it was like
- 6:36Speaker 1: there was one of the things I was reading about
- 6:38Speaker 1: the stats, right, um, you know, the all the negative
- 6:41Speaker 1: stats regarding Buffalo's offense and what they did to the
- 6:44Speaker 1: Patriots on Saturday, and one of the things was it
- 6:47Speaker 1: was the most touchdown passes since Joe Flacco through four
- 6:52Speaker 1: in the twenty fourteen division. Around here at Joette stated, well,
- 6:57Speaker 1: you know who won that game? The Patriots. Yeah, you
- 7:01Speaker 1: know why, because that version of the Patriots had a
- 7:03Speaker 1: lot of different ways to win. This one has won. Well,
- 7:06Speaker 1: they have to get the lead and then they have
- 7:09Speaker 1: to run the ball to milk the clock and then
- 7:12Speaker 1: protect the defense. At the same time, they're not really
- 7:14Speaker 1: good on offense and they're not really good on defense.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And that's and that's to me been a problem for
- 7:21Speaker 1: the entirety of the seventeen game season. It wasn't something
- 7:24Speaker 1: that happened after the bye. This is who they were
- 7:27Speaker 1: from the get go, and just I think people got
- 7:29Speaker 1: blinded by that seven game win streak where things were
- 7:32Speaker 1: falling their way. I think in retrospect now the schedule
- 7:35Speaker 1: was falling. Yeah, sure, but but the tough games in
- 7:38Speaker 1: that stretch weren't tough because of circum the weather in
- 7:43Speaker 1: Buffaloes and then Cleveland had had the injuries. It's another thing,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and I could be overthinking this, but two times, at
- 7:52Speaker 1: least two times, and Bill Belichick's postgame press conference, he
- 7:56Speaker 1: used the phrase we couldn't keep up, couldn't keep up
- 7:58Speaker 1: with him. That's why I know my knee jerk was, Oh,
- 8:02Speaker 1: the defense couldn't keep up with him? But both Yeah,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I think he could be as talking as much about
- 8:08Speaker 1: the offense because if the offense can at least, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 1: do this year, then it puts a little pressure on
- 8:15Speaker 1: Josh Allen. Oh I gotta score. I gotta score, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: But when you know our defense has the number, I
- 8:22Speaker 1: don't have to worry. We can just play loose because
- 8:25Speaker 1: if we go three and out, which they didn't, but
- 8:27Speaker 1: if we go three and out it doesn't matter. And
- 8:30Speaker 1: when you can play that way as an offense, boy,
- 8:33Speaker 1: that takes a lot of pressure off. So I think
- 8:35Speaker 1: Bill was referring as much to his offense we couldn't
- 8:38Speaker 1: keep up with them, because he knows his defense is
- 8:42Speaker 1: not able to We're not gonna keep these guys under
- 8:44Speaker 1: twenty four points. It's not gonna happen. We've got to
- 8:47Speaker 1: keep up and they just couldn't. And another thing to
- 8:50Speaker 1: keep in mind, too, is that they had a ton
- 8:54Speaker 1: of money and the circumstances with the salary cap last
- 8:59Speaker 1: offseason gave them an opportunity to go on a big
- 9:02Speaker 1: spending spree and address some of the obvious holes that
- 9:04Speaker 1: we all saw that they had. Imagine if they didn't
- 9:07Speaker 1: have that opportunity last year, how much worse this team
- 9:11Speaker 1: would have looked because they wouldn't have had I don't
- 9:13Speaker 1: want to imagine a lot, no but no, but they
- 9:16Speaker 1: brought in ten or twelve free agents and some of
- 9:18Speaker 1: them hit, yeah, you know, you know and something. But
- 9:21Speaker 1: I mean, if you didn't have the ones that hit,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you were just like most of the other teams,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and you know, think about how bad it would have been.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I don't know, No, I don't know. I think there's
- 9:29Speaker 1: a lot of different things. I like Fred's Fred's premise,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, did did Maybe the impatience a little bit
- 9:36Speaker 1: ended up hurting them, We'll see. I The one thing
- 9:39Speaker 1: that I've heard a lot of in the last day
- 9:42Speaker 1: and a half along those lines that I agree with you, Fred,
- 9:45Speaker 1: because I think that's where you were going is I
- 9:48Speaker 1: don't think it's as like, Okay, you know, it's a setback,
- 9:52Speaker 1: but you know, we're you know, we're rising, We're we're
- 9:55Speaker 1: we're there. I think they have a long way to go. Yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but they weren't rising. No, No, they you know they
- 10:02Speaker 1: when they played at the end that stretched against better teams, Um,
- 10:06Speaker 1: they didn't look good. The stat that is impossible to
- 10:09Speaker 1: ignore is they were three and eight against teams with
- 10:12Speaker 1: winning records. Yeah, and among those three wins was the
- 10:15Speaker 1: Tennessee game in the Buffalo game, right, mitigating circumstances and
- 10:19Speaker 1: those so if they played the way they had been playing,
- 10:22Speaker 1: they would have been one and ten. Well if they
- 10:25Speaker 1: if the other teams, if it wasn't for the weather
- 10:28Speaker 1: and the other team was healthy, there's a good chance
- 10:30Speaker 1: you would have Yeah, it was a good chance you
- 10:31Speaker 1: would only won one of the games, right right, Yeah,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and all valid. I think for me, the pieces that
- 10:37Speaker 1: just bug me the most right now are talked about
- 10:40Speaker 1: the Miami game. No progression from first game of the
- 10:43Speaker 1: season to last game with Miami and what Miami did
- 10:45Speaker 1: and then they did nothing against Josh Allen and twice.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I mean, you know again, like this is the point
- 10:51Speaker 1: I just philosophically believe of when you build a team
- 10:54Speaker 1: in the offseason, you look how we're going to compete,
- 10:56Speaker 1: You look at the division, and you say, how can
- 10:58Speaker 1: we win the division? How can we beat these teams
- 11:00Speaker 1: that we're gonna play twice a row. They had no
- 11:02Speaker 1: answer for Josh. They had no answer for him last year.
- 11:05Speaker 1: They had no answer for him this year. And so
- 11:07Speaker 1: I remember in the business and other teams were with
- 11:08Speaker 1: Tom Brady, how do we beat Now we have to
- 11:11Speaker 1: think about that, how do we beat Josh? And you
- 11:14Speaker 1: know a lot of people said, you know, and we
- 11:16Speaker 1: said it another show, They've got to do something different.
- 11:18Speaker 1: And I still agree with that. I just don't think
- 11:21Speaker 1: they can agree. I think as bad as it looked,
- 11:24Speaker 1: Bill and whoever thinks it would have looked even worse,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and they did some different things the other day too.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I agree with you. It just they don't have the horses.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And I saw I saw like some some scared players,
- 11:39Speaker 1: Like they look terrified at times in space, and I
- 11:43Speaker 1: think it all just stems from the lack of speed. Yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 1: And like there were times I think that they backed
- 11:48Speaker 1: off and they gave him the underneath stuff and then
- 11:51Speaker 1: they come up and maybe switch it up a little
- 11:52Speaker 1: bit and they run right by. I mean mccordy was
- 11:55Speaker 1: victim of that, and he's one of your faster, surer tacklers,
- 11:57Speaker 1: you know. But there was a couple of players really
- 12:00Speaker 1: stood out. One was the touchdown to Sanders. They got
- 12:03Speaker 1: backed up on the illegal block. I think it made
- 12:06Speaker 1: it like a second and twenty and they just ran
- 12:09Speaker 1: right by. Now it was kind of a zone and
- 12:11Speaker 1: Juwan Williams sort of stopped, but there's got to be
- 12:14Speaker 1: a safety coming over. He so Jewan Williams lets him
- 12:17Speaker 1: run right by him and the safety is nowhere to
- 12:19Speaker 1: be found. It is easy at pitching catch as you
- 12:21Speaker 1: can get in the end zone. I mean that was
- 12:23Speaker 1: almost uncontested. And then there was the play late in
- 12:30Speaker 1: the first half. I think it was twenty to nothing.
- 12:33Speaker 1: After the Patriots decided not to go for a fourth
- 12:35Speaker 1: down that we all thought that they probably needed to
- 12:37Speaker 1: go for. They back him up, and you know, you
- 12:41Speaker 1: sort of thinking, oh, Buffalo gets a first down here,
- 12:43Speaker 1: they'll be content to run the clock out. The first play,
- 12:48Speaker 1: they throw it like a little like jet sweep action.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I forget if it was a pop pass or if
- 12:54Speaker 1: it was just a jet sweet Isaiah McKenzie, and oh
- 12:57Speaker 1: my god, he got to the sideline and just ran
- 13:00Speaker 1: and by everybody in the end off like that was
- 13:02Speaker 1: a high school play. Like in the NFL, when you
- 13:04Speaker 1: go to the sideline, even when you get the edge,
- 13:07Speaker 1: it's like a seven yard game because the pursuit comes
- 13:10Speaker 1: over and knocks you out of bounds even when it
- 13:12Speaker 1: works right. He got the sideline and took Mike eight
- 13:19Speaker 1: nine strides, kept going right down the sideline before anybody
- 13:23Speaker 1: came over and pushed him out of bounds. Yeah, he
- 13:25Speaker 1: just ran away from acquartering yep. And it was just
- 13:28Speaker 1: striking how fast they were. I thought mackenzie would be
- 13:32Speaker 1: like an afterthought in this game. That they found a
- 13:33Speaker 1: way to get everybody involved. Everybody did something for Buffalo
- 13:37Speaker 1: and again, they played loose and unfettered because they didn't
- 13:40Speaker 1: have to worry. Yeah, you know, yeah they had to
- 13:44Speaker 1: Our defense has their number. It's they're not gonna do anything,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know. And it's like and yeah, there's there's there's
- 13:53Speaker 1: a little give up on the half of the you know,
- 13:55Speaker 1: the part of the Patriots. We'll get to that in
- 13:57Speaker 1: the second hour. Yeah, I have a couple of guys
- 13:59Speaker 1: that I want to talk about. I want to get
- 14:01Speaker 1: your guys thoughts on, you know, and now, yes, right now,
- 14:04Speaker 1: we're in a dark place. But I mean there's I
- 14:08Speaker 1: thought Mac played well. I thought he played his heart out.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I think he competed. I had no problem, you know.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I think there's some bright spots going forward. I think
- 14:15Speaker 1: Born as a keeper. I think Henry's a keeper. Um,
- 14:19Speaker 1: I think Barmore obviously is a keeper. I think there's
- 14:21Speaker 1: some really good things we can build around going forward.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I don't know, but I want to get to him
- 14:29Speaker 1: in the same hour. But there's a there's a lot
- 14:32Speaker 1: of work to do. It's not like, oh, a lot,
- 14:34Speaker 1: a few more pieces and we're there, and that's we're
- 14:36Speaker 1: not there. Can I just bring up you know, it's
- 14:39Speaker 1: it's very easy for any of us to do this
- 14:42Speaker 1: post mortem now that the season's over, now that they've
- 14:45Speaker 1: lost the way they did, and to bring out these
- 14:47Speaker 1: flaws and and say, all right, what we're looking back
- 14:51Speaker 1: at the season and how it was. But I think
- 14:54Speaker 1: we need to also give ourselves a little bit of
- 14:55Speaker 1: credit for pointing a lot of this stuff out during
- 14:58Speaker 1: the season and during some of the criticism from people
- 15:01Speaker 1: who were saying, well, you goes are being too negative.
- 15:02Speaker 1: They're winning their number one they're going to the playoffs
- 15:05Speaker 1: AFC Championship. We were pointing this stuff out as it
- 15:08Speaker 1: was happening. And yeah, they got lucky in that stretch
- 15:11Speaker 1: with some of the circumstances that they had the seven
- 15:13Speaker 1: game win streak, and people's vision got clouded by that.
- 15:17Speaker 1: But we were pointing out all this time that this
- 15:19Speaker 1: team had flaws. It's not like we're just saying this now,
- 15:23Speaker 1: you know, when it's easy to look back on it
- 15:25Speaker 1: and say, oh, yeah, this is what happened. That's why
- 15:26Speaker 1: it happened. We were saying this at the time and
- 15:29Speaker 1: very few people wanted to believe that, And now here
- 15:31Speaker 1: we are having to look at it, you know, in
- 15:33Speaker 1: the stark light of of them. No, but that's that's
- 15:39Speaker 1: to be expected for I did pick against him. I knew.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I just couldn't. I just couldn't objectively say they're gonna win.
- 15:45Speaker 1: There was an air of inevitability show. There was an
- 15:49Speaker 1: air of inevitability about this game that I haven't felt
- 15:52Speaker 1: with this team in a long time. I felt a
- 15:56Speaker 1: little resigned. I went into it a little resigned, and
- 15:59Speaker 1: if they were gonna make a run or they were
- 16:01Speaker 1: gonna make it competitive, I wouldn't get my hopes up
- 16:04Speaker 1: until they actually did it. And they never really gave
- 16:07Speaker 1: you a chance in the game. It was pretty much
- 16:08Speaker 1: just a continuation of what we saw last time. I
- 16:11Speaker 1: just and and everything you said is true. And I
- 16:13Speaker 1: thought they had flaws with run, defense, with past, you know, defense, depth,
- 16:17Speaker 1: all those things. I just thought that they wouldn't go
- 16:20Speaker 1: out getting absolutely housed by Buffalo like they did. I mean,
- 16:24Speaker 1: that was beyond the pale and what you would expect.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I mean, a little fight, a little bit of this,
- 16:32Speaker 1: something like the last game I could have envisioned. Yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 1: but not like you know, like Buffalo won because they're
- 16:38Speaker 1: better and they beach about they made the play is
- 16:40Speaker 1: not from beginning to end. What did they do Buffalo?
- 16:44Speaker 1: They masched their point, they broke and they broke the game.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And it's interesting, Like in all the games this weekend,
- 16:54Speaker 1: it seemed to me, I don't know if every game,
- 16:56Speaker 1: but most games, the team that was playing better down
- 17:00Speaker 1: the stretch dominated, Like teams that didn't play down the
- 17:04Speaker 1: good down the stretch didn't like suddenly turn it around
- 17:07Speaker 1: in the wild card game and start playing the Cardinals
- 17:10Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah, that's one. You know, Dallas, I mean,
- 17:13Speaker 1: Dallas was playing well down the stretch. Guys told me
- 17:15Speaker 1: every week the Rams were struggling down the stretch. Well, yeah,
- 17:21Speaker 1: but Stafford was. But the team Stafford team was winning.
- 17:25Speaker 1: The team was winning down the stretch. You know. But
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's it's it's I don't know, it's it's disappointing. And
- 17:33Speaker 1: I mean I just and I try to put it
- 17:34Speaker 1: in context of of you know, big, big season ending
- 17:37Speaker 1: losses that the weaknesses were glaring. Now, I don't think
- 17:41Speaker 1: any year like you could talk, oh six they lost,
- 17:43Speaker 1: they feel like they need more weapons, they won't out weapons.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Two thousand and nine they lost, felt like you needed
- 17:47Speaker 1: a little bit of an energy makeover and obviously some weapons. Uh,
- 17:52Speaker 1: that those years weren't as glaring as this where it's
- 17:55Speaker 1: like I I don't really know even where to start
- 17:57Speaker 1: right now. I mean, I think, like you said, you
- 17:59Speaker 1: feel pretty good about about Max's first year. We talked
- 18:02Speaker 1: a lot about him on the postgame show, and you know,
- 18:04Speaker 1: I think everybody can agree getting him and this is
- 18:07Speaker 1: a refrain. We've been talking about getting some explosive, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 1: slot receiver type guy that they've always had a saw
- 18:12Speaker 1: Dante Scarneckia coming up with that today. Um, But just defensively,
- 18:16Speaker 1: where do they go? I mean, philosophically, how do they
- 18:19Speaker 1: how do they change on the fly? Because Josh Allen
- 18:22Speaker 1: ain't going anywhere. And I mean as much as everyone
- 18:24Speaker 1: wants to make fun of too a tag of Iloa,
- 18:26Speaker 1: they had no answers for him either. So he's three
- 18:28Speaker 1: and oh against you, you know you in a lot
- 18:30Speaker 1: of ways when you you started the show by saying
- 18:32Speaker 1: there's no difference between the book ends and the I'm
- 18:34Speaker 1: much more concerned about that than like, I think Josh
- 18:37Speaker 1: Allen is exceptional. I know everybody else just found out
- 18:40Speaker 1: that he could play Saturday. I've thought he has been
- 18:43Speaker 1: really good for two years now, two I think is
- 18:46Speaker 1: very average, very average, and he and he's not average
- 18:50Speaker 1: against you, No, he's not. That's three times he's not
- 18:53Speaker 1: average against you. And that troubles me now. And I
- 18:56Speaker 1: mean I think, like you know, schematically, I'm sure people
- 18:59Speaker 1: can go through and but I think there's similarities and
- 19:01Speaker 1: why Tah has success and why teams like Josh Allen
- 19:05Speaker 1: had success. And I think really with Josh Allen, what
- 19:07Speaker 1: you've seen when Buffalo's really started to kick it into
- 19:09Speaker 1: a new gear is just being Willie. Go on to
- 19:11Speaker 1: the neat stuff. Don't try to make the tough throws.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Just take what they give you the whole time. And
- 19:15Speaker 1: you know when the Patriots lack of speed now at
- 19:17Speaker 1: that second level, as soon as they complete passes, it's
- 19:20Speaker 1: like an all out race to try to tackle a
- 19:23Speaker 1: guy now, And I mean, how many guys can even
- 19:25Speaker 1: run anybody down at this point, I mean, dugger maybe,
- 19:28Speaker 1: But he's got a giant club on his hand. No
- 19:30Speaker 1: idea what happened there by the way, which is probably
- 19:32Speaker 1: something that'll just kind of get lost, But I don't
- 19:34Speaker 1: know how he broke his hand. Somehow he had to
- 19:36Speaker 1: be done it that Jackson, he had to have done
- 19:38Speaker 1: it during the Jacksonville game, and we just didn't see it.
- 19:40Speaker 1: You know. It had to be either didn't realize it,
- 19:42Speaker 1: didn't realize it, you know, because it was such a blowout,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and you say, you figure all the guys not playing
- 19:46Speaker 1: because it's a blowout, you know, he must have done something. Yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and we just never saw it. The tent never went up.
- 19:52Speaker 1: We never saw the tent go I mean, never saw
- 19:53Speaker 1: him go in it. So it might have been something
- 19:55Speaker 1: like he dealt with it, you know, and then maybe
- 19:57Speaker 1: afterwards was like, oh, the pain's not going away, like
- 20:00Speaker 1: and then they realize, oh, you know, so funny that
- 20:02Speaker 1: they hit him from us all week. I mean, they
- 20:04Speaker 1: certainly did that. We've seen them do that before though. Yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 1: we've seen and exactly played out. We thought he's gonna
- 20:09Speaker 1: show up with a huge clubs up and the yeah, um,
- 20:15Speaker 1: just to go back to the big picture of the season,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna beat the drum of the refrain I've been
- 20:23Speaker 1: saying all season, which was that I was not going
- 20:26Speaker 1: to be concerned with the final record more so than
- 20:29Speaker 1: the development of the key players that you added. And
- 20:33Speaker 1: I think maybe the jury is still a little bit
- 20:35Speaker 1: out on Mac and his long term future. Um, but
- 20:38Speaker 1: he certainly wasn't the reason you lost this game, and
- 20:42Speaker 1: he wasn't the reason that you went you know only
- 20:45Speaker 1: only And I say that in quotes ten and seven,
- 20:47Speaker 1: like he's not the problem. I think I think you
- 20:51Speaker 1: can if you put enough pieces around him, I think
- 20:53Speaker 1: you can win games again and win a playoff game
- 20:55Speaker 1: or two. Um, whether or not he can take you
- 20:57Speaker 1: all the way, that's I think that's to be determined.
- 21:01Speaker 1: But that's another big picture item that I don't think
- 21:04Speaker 1: is ready for exactly. But I'm just would take some
- 21:07Speaker 1: exception to some of not what Eric said, but like
- 21:09Speaker 1: some of the reaction of the game. If I heard one,
- 21:12Speaker 1: I heard it fifteen times, like he wasn't the problem. Okay,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you were down thirty three to three. He was eleven
- 21:19Speaker 1: for seventeen four hundred and sixteen yards and two interceptions
- 21:22Speaker 1: when you were down thirty three to three. He might
- 21:24Speaker 1: not have been the problem, but he wasn't the solution either. Yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 1: Like he can't, I just can. He just not have
- 21:32Speaker 1: been the biggest reason why they lost, but yet in
- 21:35Speaker 1: a game that they were never competitive and not really
- 21:37Speaker 1: have been considered to play well. Because I don't think
- 21:40Speaker 1: he played well. He was fine. He wasn't on our
- 21:42Speaker 1: bad list, right, We didn't put him on the bad list,
- 21:45Speaker 1: at least I didn't. But I've heard a lot of
- 21:50Speaker 1: oh one silver lining in this game. Mac Jones. He
- 21:54Speaker 1: came to play. Yeah, he made a couple of huge
- 21:56Speaker 1: plays in that first drive, the scramble for the first
- 22:00Speaker 1: down to Hunter Henry and then the scramble on third
- 22:03Speaker 1: and sixteen to run himself. Yeah, like a couple of
- 22:06Speaker 1: huge plays. Then he threw a pick. I don't care
- 22:09Speaker 1: how good the play was by the other guy. He
- 22:10Speaker 1: threw a pick, right, but I'm gonna I'm gonna give
- 22:13Speaker 1: him a little bit of a pass on that. No,
- 22:16Speaker 1: no pun intended. Thank you. I know you don't. You're
- 22:22Speaker 1: not really feeling it today. Do anybody see this Nickelodeon
- 22:24Speaker 1: interview with Deebo Samuel No, That kid was hilarious. Well, um,
- 22:31Speaker 1: not what that was I saying? Oh about Matt Yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I just like the fact that he got some experience
- 22:36Speaker 1: in the playoffs, which that was beyond anything I could
- 22:40Speaker 1: have hoped for at the beginning of this season, that
- 22:42Speaker 1: he at least got that far. Oh yeah, that's that's
- 22:44Speaker 1: the big picture to be is he got and he got.
- 22:49Speaker 1: He got through a seventeen game season, took every snap,
- 22:54Speaker 1: got as many reps as possible. I mean, I don't
- 22:58Speaker 1: know what else you could have asked for nothing, but
- 23:01Speaker 1: I really don't. But at the same time, it doesn't
- 23:03Speaker 1: mean that I am like no longer concerned about the quarterback.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, That's why I said, I think
- 23:08Speaker 1: the jury is still probably a little bit out as
- 23:10Speaker 1: far as that goes. But I am really happy with
- 23:14Speaker 1: his rookie year. Yes, as a Patriots fan. It's not
- 23:17Speaker 1: an analyst here. As a Patriots fan, I step away
- 23:20Speaker 1: and say, we got a rookie quarterback who looks like
- 23:22Speaker 1: he has an idea of what he's doing. Yeah. Yeah,
- 23:24Speaker 1: it gives you a degree of stability when really I
- 23:26Speaker 1: don't think there's a whole lot that you can really
- 23:29Speaker 1: cling cling to. But I think, Paul, just to agree
- 23:32Speaker 1: with your point, I think a lot of this Max
- 23:34Speaker 1: stuff was just that he looked composed in that first
- 23:38Speaker 1: drive and he threw the ball a little bit, and
- 23:39Speaker 1: like that one drive I think is carrying a lot
- 23:44Speaker 1: of a lot of that narrative. But it was enough
- 23:46Speaker 1: that I put it on like on a night they
- 23:48Speaker 1: lost forty seven to seventeen, we put it on the
- 23:50Speaker 1: good list just those two plays. Yeah, like I thought
- 23:53Speaker 1: they were good enough players that warranted, you know, some
- 23:56Speaker 1: conversation and on an otherwise dreary where the only thing,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know what, the only thing that we had on
- 24:02Speaker 1: the on the good list was Nick Foles. You jumped
- 24:08Speaker 1: on the extra point is the only thing I said
- 24:17Speaker 1: it about good thing? They blocked that extra point. Now
- 24:21Speaker 1: there's there's a lot of work to do. Um. I
- 24:24Speaker 1: think they had a good draft. They had three guys
- 24:26Speaker 1: in the last draft that you can point to our
- 24:29Speaker 1: keepers and Jones, Barm Warren Stevenson. They're gonna have to
- 24:32Speaker 1: do that again. They're gonna have to get at least
- 24:35Speaker 1: three guys that become regular contributors right away. Yeah. Um,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and then you know, then there's some guys that were
- 24:42Speaker 1: on the sideline all year that you know it'll start up,
- 24:46Speaker 1: trust me, Well, you know we're gonna be getting Ronnie
- 24:49Speaker 1: Perkins and we're gonna be getting and we're in Anthrety
- 24:53Speaker 1: Jennings is gonna be Yeah, the camera mcgrown thing. Oh,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you know, like on the like he he had a
- 25:02Speaker 1: tourn Aco. We didn't see him play. I don't know
- 25:04Speaker 1: what he could do. Ronnie Perkins could have played and didn't.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Everybody Jennings has been here two years, yeah right, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: could have played and hasn't. Right, this was his second
- 25:15Speaker 1: this was his second year. Yeah, okay, and he hasn't. Like,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I don't know why he's on I R. I just
- 25:21Speaker 1: know that he hasn't. I've watched him in training camp
- 25:24Speaker 1: for two years and not been a part of any
- 25:26Speaker 1: of their regular packages. So he wasn't going to play. Yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I mean, I you know, not to. I mean, I
- 25:31Speaker 1: guess we're just kind of bouncing around, But I mean
- 25:33Speaker 1: I think to that point, it's like, are they are
- 25:35Speaker 1: they going to turn it over to those guys, to McMillan, mcgron,
- 25:38Speaker 1: Jennings to buy ch Winovich and Perkins. I mean, those
- 25:42Speaker 1: are you know, the young guys that they've drafted or
- 25:44Speaker 1: acquired in the last couple of years, Like, are they
- 25:47Speaker 1: ready to make that kind of switch, which is you know,
- 25:49Speaker 1: in which I think we're kind of circling around the
- 25:51Speaker 1: should they have done it last year? Should they have?
- 25:53Speaker 1: Well that gets into the whole argument that Paul and
- 25:56Speaker 1: I had, Yeah, but they might have to because if
- 26:00Speaker 1: if High Tower doesn't come back, you know, when they decide,
- 26:04Speaker 1: you know, you know you got Bentley, I don't you
- 26:07Speaker 1: know he's still on the country. He's a free agent,
- 26:09Speaker 1: free agent, yeah yeah, so and Vannoy has another year,
- 26:12Speaker 1: right and his contract Annoy is under contract. But do
- 26:16Speaker 1: you want him back? Right? So there's a lot of
- 26:18Speaker 1: decisions in that area of the field that you have
- 26:21Speaker 1: to make. That's another thing, Like, you know, I mean
- 26:26Speaker 1: Miami got rid of Annoy. How many times has Collins
- 26:29Speaker 1: gotten kind of jettison? You know, like these guys like
- 26:32Speaker 1: and I can't help, but you know, I have so
- 26:34Speaker 1: much respect for Matthew Slayer, Devin mccordy, High Tower, these
- 26:37Speaker 1: guys who have been the locker room leaders and tone
- 26:40Speaker 1: setters for so long. But if I if I'm gonna
- 26:44Speaker 1: have Collins on my team, I want him to show
- 26:46Speaker 1: up and he needs to flash and game, yeah, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: like not make a play every not be me like
- 26:51Speaker 1: leading to but be disruptive, be that athlete that we
- 26:55Speaker 1: thinking he's how old is he now? But they're all
- 27:00Speaker 1: on they're on the wrong side of third exactly. My
- 27:03Speaker 1: bigger point is is that love those guys, don't want
- 27:06Speaker 1: to see them gone. But do you think that there's
- 27:08Speaker 1: too many people waiting around for the Championship Patriots to
- 27:11Speaker 1: all of a sudden kick in, because you still have
- 27:13Speaker 1: this element of the Championship Patriots. So, like we talked
- 27:16Speaker 1: this year about how you love Judon just doesn't have
- 27:18Speaker 1: a sense of it. You like Mac, he doesn't have
- 27:19Speaker 1: a sense of it. I don't. I'm not I'm not
- 27:21Speaker 1: going to advocate getting rid of Slater, mccordy and high Tower.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But I think that there might be an element to
- 27:27Speaker 1: this team that there's a lot of guys who just
- 27:30Speaker 1: kind of look to those guys and be like, well,
- 27:31Speaker 1: it's just gonna happen, right, We got these guys, like
- 27:33Speaker 1: the match is just gonna happen, right, We're in the playoffs.
- 27:35Speaker 1: This is it, Like it's just gonna happen. It doesn't
- 27:37Speaker 1: Like I think that there needs to be an element
- 27:39Speaker 1: of that needs to be out, Like you need to
- 27:42Speaker 1: realize this is a totally new Patriots team that needs
- 27:44Speaker 1: to go into the AFC easton, you know, beat the
- 27:46Speaker 1: Dolphins and beat the Bills. These are things they haven't
- 27:48Speaker 1: been able to do. This isn't that team anymore that
- 27:50Speaker 1: all of a sudden is going to turn on championship football.
- 27:53Speaker 1: So we'll see what those guys have to decide in
- 27:55Speaker 1: the coming weeks. I mean, I think that, you know,
- 27:56Speaker 1: first it's their decision to see and then it's you know,
- 27:59Speaker 1: the Patriots if they want them back. But right I
- 28:01Speaker 1: just think there's an element of you need the turnover. Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: and you know, if you're waiting for like Bill to
- 28:07Speaker 1: have that big press conference where he tells you what
- 28:09Speaker 1: he thought, it's not gonna happen. As we've said for decades,
- 28:13Speaker 1: now look at what they do. That'll tell us what
- 28:16Speaker 1: he thinks of what's going on. I just thought it
- 28:19Speaker 1: was really interesting to hear him say the words was
- 28:22Speaker 1: that us? Or was that just a bad night? You know?
- 28:26Speaker 1: And you know, I think everybody's like, that's you. That's
- 28:30Speaker 1: who you've been, like, that's who you've been going on
- 28:32Speaker 1: the years, but especially now see the bigger picture. I
- 28:35Speaker 1: totally agree with that. The bigger picture is that was them. Now,
- 28:39Speaker 1: you could make an argument for semantics and say seventeen
- 28:44Speaker 1: wasn't them but being but you're just deceiving yourself into
- 28:47Speaker 1: thinking that you were on their level. Right, right, Like
- 28:50Speaker 1: the last five times you've played you you basically beat
- 28:53Speaker 1: him because of a tornado. I mean you lost. Think
- 28:57Speaker 1: about that. Somebody said that, Um, you know, the Bills
- 29:01Speaker 1: pitched a perfect game in terms of the offense. Yeah,
- 29:04Speaker 1: and they did it twice, Like no punts the last time,
- 29:08Speaker 1: two times. This one was more perfect than the first
- 29:10Speaker 1: one indeed. Right, but they haven't punted against the Patriots
- 29:14Speaker 1: since thirteen and a half minutes were left in the
- 29:16Speaker 1: third quarter of the tornado game, right, Yeah, they didn't
- 29:19Speaker 1: even punt with a tornado in a second. So you
- 29:21Speaker 1: had you had no answers against the division rival, a
- 29:25Speaker 1: team that you know, Yeah, you went absolutely no answers. Yeah,
- 29:30Speaker 1: and I think that brings up a good Bob. No,
- 29:32Speaker 1: not good Bob at all. But I think it also
- 29:33Speaker 1: brings up one of the one of the points that's
- 29:37Speaker 1: been known at me too, is like you need to
- 29:40Speaker 1: have somebody on the defensive side to be held accountable.
- 29:45Speaker 1: You need a coordinator because whenever there's a bad game offensively. Yeah,
- 29:50Speaker 1: it's like I didn't like Josh's play calling. You can
- 29:52Speaker 1: pinpoint to Josh. Well on defense, who do you point to? Well?
- 29:55Speaker 1: What somebody used to take the fall for what I
- 29:57Speaker 1: was gonna do is you know, after I was gonna
- 29:59Speaker 1: tease is at the break that after the break we're
- 30:01Speaker 1: gonna talk about coaching, okay, you know, because like I
- 30:04Speaker 1: will table it for them. Yeah. Yeah, And so after
- 30:07Speaker 1: the break coming, you know, who do we think is
- 30:12Speaker 1: coming going and all that stuff, because that's a whole
- 30:14Speaker 1: You're right, that's a whole discussion, right, And there's a
- 30:17Speaker 1: lot of interviews taking place now for other teams with
- 30:20Speaker 1: personnel and coaching staff and Patriots related news there. We
- 30:23Speaker 1: can get into that later if you want. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:26Speaker 1: there's a lot, there's a lot to unpack, and yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 1: the JC Jackson definitely probably at the top of the list,
- 30:30Speaker 1: all right. Five five Pats five hundred is the a
- 30:32Speaker 1: sticket hut line web radio at Patriots dot com is
- 30:35Speaker 1: the email address. Lots of calls and emails coming in,
- 30:39Speaker 1: So let's hit the phones. We'll start with Patty and Agawam,
- 30:42Speaker 1: what's up Patty? Patty at Patty Now, there is nothing
- 30:49Speaker 1: like them, nothing like them. Tuesday Afternoon Therapy. I'll tell
- 30:54Speaker 1: you what um I tried getting in on the postgame show, Freddie,
- 30:57Speaker 1: I'll tell you what the call, the lines were flooded,
- 31:03Speaker 1: people needed to talk, and yeah, so I just want
- 31:08Speaker 1: to touch a little bit on the game in the
- 31:09Speaker 1: offense and they'll call in Thursday and uh air, My
- 31:13Speaker 1: grievance was about the defense. But make no mistake about it,
- 31:16Speaker 1: Buffalo did not slay any dragons. And on Saturday night
- 31:20Speaker 1: they are at the Dragon. Now yours, every team in
- 31:24Speaker 1: the AFC East was tasted us, and it's pretty clear
- 31:27Speaker 1: that they're you know, subsequently, they might win the Super Bowl.
- 31:32Speaker 1: So we have to decide whether we're competing against them
- 31:34Speaker 1: for a division, for a conference, or as a champion.
- 31:38Speaker 1: So that's what I got to say about that. Um,
- 31:41Speaker 1: the offense, I don't I think there's good pieces in place.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Obviously the running backs are good. You guys brought up Born.
- 31:49Speaker 1: I think Born's a player. I think Hunter Henry's a player.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But can every well, like I've talked to people, like
- 31:58Speaker 1: people in my circle who think it's either one way
- 32:01Speaker 1: or the other. It's like Max sucks or Max greet
- 32:04Speaker 1: Can we give the guy like maybe two or three years? Right? Yeah?
- 32:07Speaker 1: Like like right, do we have to have a decision? Now?
- 32:10Speaker 1: That's why I say the jury is still out with him.
- 32:12Speaker 1: He needs more time. Yeah, and Paul, you hit the
- 32:15Speaker 1: nail on the head. I mean, he looks like he
- 32:17Speaker 1: can play. He looks like he gets it. But let's see.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Let's see what he does in the next couple of
- 32:21Speaker 1: seasons and how he progresses in the program. I would
- 32:25Speaker 1: hate to be like the jets Worth passed off, right.
- 32:28Speaker 1: I just get annoyed when the offense basically did nothing
- 32:31Speaker 1: until the game was decided. It was thirty three to
- 32:34Speaker 1: three before the offense moved the ball, and I'm hearing
- 32:38Speaker 1: one after another after another. Mac wasn't the problem. Mac
- 32:41Speaker 1: played well. I mean, if you want to tell me
- 32:43Speaker 1: that Mac was like number twenty on the list of
- 32:45Speaker 1: problems Saturday night, I would agree, Like the first eighteen
- 32:49Speaker 1: things had to be defensive. But Mac, like, your only
- 32:53Speaker 1: chance to win that game based on the way you
- 32:54Speaker 1: played defense was to get in a shootout, right, And
- 32:57Speaker 1: you didn't score until halfway through the third quarter. Down
- 32:59Speaker 1: thirty points. We couldn't keep up correct And I got
- 33:03Speaker 1: one name for you, guys, Wayne Dale Robinson out of Kentucky.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Look him up. He's he's If we're going to go
- 33:12Speaker 1: back to possibly putting like a speedier guy, a guy
- 33:16Speaker 1: that can separate, a guy that shifting in the splot.
- 33:19Speaker 1: He looks like a player because I listened. I looked
- 33:21Speaker 1: to Kobe Myers too. But we need to get some
- 33:23Speaker 1: speed in that position. And that's all I got for today, Guys.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I'll call back on Thursday and designs. I feel good
- 33:32Speaker 1: about what how I've put Mack in my mind. I
- 33:36Speaker 1: think he was an average NFL quarterback this year. He
- 33:38Speaker 1: was an average NFL quarterback as a rookie. And you
- 33:41Speaker 1: can take that for all the good and the bad
- 33:43Speaker 1: that it means. You can be happy with it. Certainly
- 33:45Speaker 1: last year you'd be happy with average quarterback play. But
- 33:48Speaker 1: you know, I think he still definitely has strides to
- 33:51Speaker 1: make and improvements and he's gonna need guys around him.
- 33:54Speaker 1: But that that's where I land. And I think the
- 33:56Speaker 1: debate going back and forth between he's an average quarterback
- 33:58Speaker 1: like that's it's hard to bend down. He was also
- 34:00Speaker 1: he was also a rookie, an average quarterback as a rookie,
- 34:03Speaker 1: which is good, Which is good. Yeah, it doesn't mean
- 34:06Speaker 1: that he's gonna be an above average veteran, right, That's right.
- 34:09Speaker 1: That's why the jury is still out because I can
- 34:11Speaker 1: give you a laundry list of guys that you would
- 34:13Speaker 1: have thought were in a similar spot after the rookie years. Yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 1: and they're still in that same spot, right, They haven't
- 34:19Speaker 1: regressed the same, haven't moved on. Yeah. I did have
- 34:23Speaker 1: soulless um knowing that after the game I could go
- 34:26Speaker 1: back to New England and these people would have to
- 34:29Speaker 1: stay in Buffalo. What a what a miserable on the
- 34:32Speaker 1: one day the sun comes out, it's four degrees. It's
- 34:35Speaker 1: just a miserable play. I also thought it was funny,
- 34:37Speaker 1: Like a lot of people, Peter King was trumpeting that
- 34:40Speaker 1: game as being the possible Monday night game, and then
- 34:43Speaker 1: if in fact it were played on Monday night, there
- 34:45Speaker 1: was a blizzard, right, just an awful, awful place. Did
- 34:48Speaker 1: you see any of the picks of Ryan Fitzpatrick there?
- 34:50Speaker 1: He went as a fan? I saw that shirtless? That
- 34:53Speaker 1: really him? Yeah? I thought that was like a photoshop
- 34:57Speaker 1: or someone who looked like him. That was really I really,
- 35:02Speaker 1: I thought it was so cool. Yeah, a bunch of
- 35:04Speaker 1: pictures of him shirt off and wow, yeah, what a guy.
- 35:08Speaker 1: That's one of the seventeen teams he's played for, right, right,
- 35:12Speaker 1: Let's go to Nolan in New York. A Nolan, Hey, fellas,
- 35:16Speaker 1: how are you doing good? Good? So I've emailed in
- 35:20Speaker 1: a few times. This is my first time calling and
- 35:23Speaker 1: Freddie were right. You guys are the therapist and I'm
- 35:26Speaker 1: the client. Land on the couch right now. So I've
- 35:29Speaker 1: had a lot of thoughts since Saturday night. Um, first,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I want to say that I am also a diehard
- 35:35Speaker 1: Michigan football fan for college and what I saw on
- 35:39Speaker 1: Saturday was the equivalent as far as the difference in speed, power,
- 35:45Speaker 1: pure talent, all that was the exact same. Is what
- 35:48Speaker 1: I saw in Georgia versus Michigan in the in the
- 35:50Speaker 1: semi finals. That's what I looked like. Um that's twenty
- 35:54Speaker 1: five star recruits versus three. That's what I looked like. UM.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I know this, this point has been beaten to death
- 36:01Speaker 1: since Saturday, but I think this defense needs torn down. Mccordy,
- 36:05Speaker 1: love him, He's gotta go High Tower, love him. You
- 36:09Speaker 1: gotta go Van noy Collins, These Boogeyman leftovers, like, I
- 36:13Speaker 1: don't want to see that again. I think we need
- 36:15Speaker 1: to adapt. I think we need to change everything up. Um,
- 36:19Speaker 1: get younger, get faster. Is that that point has been made. Um,
- 36:24Speaker 1: I'm okay with resigning j C because I don't see
- 36:28Speaker 1: anybody else better out there. Um. But and really, the
- 36:33Speaker 1: league is going to pass this team by, and not
- 36:36Speaker 1: even just the league, but the division. UM, I get it.
- 36:40Speaker 1: It's still the Bills. We want Buffalo. They stopped Josh
- 36:43Speaker 1: Allen's garbage while they run the division. As I heard
- 36:47Speaker 1: on one of Paul's shows yesterday. Yeah. Right. But from
- 36:57Speaker 1: the outside, like, I totally think that Bill is the goat.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I think he's the greatest coach of all time. But
- 37:03Speaker 1: outside of Foxborough, you're going to just see people say,
- 37:06Speaker 1: look at his record without Tom Brady, and you're going
- 37:09Speaker 1: to see what Tom's doing in Tampa and say, really,
- 37:12Speaker 1: how great is he? Um. I think this is the
- 37:15Speaker 1: greatest challenge of his career. I think this is where
- 37:17Speaker 1: he either adapts or dies off and we get left
- 37:21Speaker 1: in the dust. It's not just outside of Foxborough that's
- 37:24Speaker 1: saying that, by the way, YEA plenty of it inside. Yeah,
- 37:28Speaker 1: plenty of fans are asking that question. But I agree
- 37:32Speaker 1: with you. I think it is a huge challenge ahead
- 37:35Speaker 1: and I think that he's put I think he's a
- 37:38Speaker 1: lot of self in post pressure with keep you know,
- 37:41Speaker 1: A for the record that he that he's chasing, and
- 37:44Speaker 1: B to keep up with Brady. And I think, you
- 37:47Speaker 1: know you you'd like to be able to step back
- 37:50Speaker 1: and just say, well, just go about trying to get
- 37:52Speaker 1: your team back in title contention. But I do think
- 37:55Speaker 1: those external factors are playing a role. Yeah, And it
- 37:58Speaker 1: looks like the Bucks are going to keep get at
- 38:00Speaker 1: least back to the NFC Championship, right. I don't know
- 38:03Speaker 1: about that. I don't know. I don't think that's a guarantee.
- 38:05Speaker 1: That's a tough game on yeah, yeah, but it's in Tampa,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, Tampa will be favored, although the Rams
- 38:10Speaker 1: do they have played well against the Buck Yeah, but
- 38:14Speaker 1: will not be an easy game. No, I think all
- 38:16Speaker 1: the games this weekend are going to be phenomenal better. Yeah, yeah, Nolan,
- 38:21Speaker 1: that was a good call. Thank you. Um Chris with
- 38:24Speaker 1: a T, I A n what's up? Christian? Oh? You
- 38:28Speaker 1: know this is definitely therapy. Um. You know, the very
- 38:32Speaker 1: first pf W in Progress I listened to was the
- 38:36Speaker 1: first show after the loss to Indianapolis and the championship
- 38:40Speaker 1: game in two thousand seven, two six. Yeah, Okay, yeah,
- 38:45Speaker 1: there you go, so that and that, you know, because
- 38:47Speaker 1: I didn't know that was therapy radio and oh yeah
- 38:51Speaker 1: had him. Yeah about the you know what, a loss
- 39:00Speaker 1: like this is really jarring, and it just that shakes
- 39:03Speaker 1: the whole foundation of the team. And they're apparently a
- 39:08Speaker 1: lot closer to the number seven team than they are
- 39:10Speaker 1: to the number one teat right now. And we're going
- 39:14Speaker 1: to talk aboth rebuilding this team throughout the whole offseason,
- 39:19Speaker 1: but I wanted to get your thoughts on this quick,
- 39:20Speaker 1: and this is sort of what I think. Last year
- 39:23Speaker 1: was a perfect storm for you. You had an abundance
- 39:26Speaker 1: of cap space, You had an abundance of available players
- 39:30Speaker 1: that fit the needs that you had, and you went
- 39:33Speaker 1: out and you spent the money, and then you had
- 39:35Speaker 1: a draft that was five quarterbacks deep and you got
- 39:39Speaker 1: a quarterback. Now you don't have anywhere near the amount
- 39:44Speaker 1: of cap space, and you can make the argument that
- 39:46Speaker 1: your needs are bigger, particularly on the defensive side of
- 39:49Speaker 1: the ball, after everything that happened, really everything that happened
- 39:52Speaker 1: on Saturday, but it's actually really everything that had happened
- 39:55Speaker 1: in the last month of the seat. And my question
- 39:58Speaker 1: for you is this, I don't see this as a
- 40:01Speaker 1: one year fix, Like this is gonna take like true
- 40:04Speaker 1: to three years to rebuild this defense, and it's gonna
- 40:08Speaker 1: have to come through the draft. And my biggest fear
- 40:13Speaker 1: is that Bill can't do it. Yeah, I hear you,
- 40:18Speaker 1: you know, but it's it. You know, Paul was whispering,
- 40:22Speaker 1: but I heard him offense. Yeah, you know, if Dante
- 40:26Speaker 1: Scernecia recognizes that your quarterback needs that guy that binkie,
- 40:33Speaker 1: he's he's talking from experience. I know what the numbers are.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I know what the numbers say. The Patriots and the
- 40:39Speaker 1: Bills are defensively okay, but what do you honest to God,
- 40:42Speaker 1: don't try to sugarcoat it because we just got pasted,
- 40:45Speaker 1: But what do you really think of the Bills defense? Average?
- 40:48Speaker 1: Thank you? I agree, I couldn't agree why. It's a
- 40:51Speaker 1: perfect explanation. Especially Yeah, I think I think with Trey
- 40:57Speaker 1: White and they have the ability to maybe get a
- 40:59Speaker 1: little bit more aggressive up front, knowing that the coverage
- 41:02Speaker 1: is that I think their second they gets an average
- 41:04Speaker 1: defense that has made the Patriots offense look really bad. Yeah,
- 41:08Speaker 1: really bad. Yeah, it were easy to defend, right, Yeah,
- 41:12Speaker 1: you know, absolutely no doubt about it, and you know, uh,
- 41:16Speaker 1: Pat brought up a great point about um oh man
- 41:20Speaker 1: Jacobe Myers, you know, and and Fredis just gets back
- 41:23Speaker 1: to your point about not having the Welk or the
- 41:25Speaker 1: m Mondla the James White to go to guy. Um, yeah,
- 41:29Speaker 1: Mac needs to go to guy. Uh. But Paul, you
- 41:31Speaker 1: mentioned the postgame show about the linebackers. Uh, and you'd
- 41:36Speaker 1: be you know, talking about people had called about drafting
- 41:39Speaker 1: linebackers and you kind of said, well, they've already done
- 41:42Speaker 1: that for the past like three years. Yeah, and you've
- 41:46Speaker 1: got guys here, and you mentioned off the top, you know, Perkins, Jennings,
- 41:51Speaker 1: Oochi Winevich. Where are these guys? And Jenny said, as
- 41:54Speaker 1: Hurt mcgron is another one. That's five linebackers in the
- 41:58Speaker 1: top what three rounds in the last three years. When
- 42:01Speaker 1: they drafted him, he was not No, No, I know that.
- 42:03Speaker 1: I know that. I'm saying, like, it's hard to just say, well,
- 42:06Speaker 1: they're going to go out and draft a linebacker in
- 42:08Speaker 1: the first round. I think it's a it's a philosophy problem.
- 42:11Speaker 1: And I've said this for a long time now. All
- 42:14Speaker 1: of those athletic linebackers that run around like you said
- 42:17Speaker 1: that you know you're looking for a missile, Fred, Yeah,
- 42:19Speaker 1: they don't. They don't draft those guys. Yeah. I think
- 42:22Speaker 1: Bill thinks they're too small. I think you need one. Yeah.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Now here's the problem with being you know, the fear
- 42:29Speaker 1: of being too small should mean that you're really stout
- 42:32Speaker 1: against the run, and they're not. Yeah, either, right, it
- 42:38Speaker 1: could be a lot him off season. I'm glad you
- 42:39Speaker 1: guys think, hey, happy birthday, they're here. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 42:47Speaker 1: I just that's what I find hard to kind of resolve.
- 42:50Speaker 1: It's just do you have these veteran linebackers that fit
- 42:53Speaker 1: a clear mold and all these guys they've drafted, they
- 42:55Speaker 1: all seem like third down guys and none of them
- 42:58Speaker 1: really seem I mean, Winevich would think, I mean inactive
- 43:01Speaker 1: in that game. This will be now where like you,
- 43:03Speaker 1: in a perfect world you'd be saying, yeah, we got
- 43:05Speaker 1: to move on from from these older guys. But Whenevich
- 43:08Speaker 1: is starting to come on in his fourth year, he's
- 43:09Speaker 1: going to be I think I think there's like a
- 43:14Speaker 1: like a skill set with Winnevich that is kind of
- 43:16Speaker 1: what I'm looking for. I just don't think he's good
- 43:19Speaker 1: enough at it because he's because they're kind of I think,
- 43:22Speaker 1: and I think he's a little and I think that's
- 43:24Speaker 1: what bugs Bill. But I just look around the league
- 43:28Speaker 1: at some of these guys, and you know, we know
- 43:30Speaker 1: all that, you know, the Devin Whites of the world
- 43:32Speaker 1: and Levante David's, Devin Bush, Patrick, Queen, Kenneth Murray. I mean,
- 43:37Speaker 1: there's a million of them. There's a million of them. Really,
- 43:39Speaker 1: that's the linebacker that the league is gravitating toward now
- 43:42Speaker 1: everywhere but here. And I told you I watched that
- 43:46Speaker 1: the college football playoffs. And the kid from Georgia is
- 43:49Speaker 1: another one. It's uh Nikobe Dean I think is his name, um,
- 43:53Speaker 1: And he's two twenty five. I unless Bill changes his mind,
- 44:01Speaker 1: cross him off the list. Now he's going to be
- 44:02Speaker 1: a high draft pick anyway, but cross him off the
- 44:05Speaker 1: list because Bill's not interested. And a guy that's small,
- 44:08Speaker 1: And I looked at it as saying, yeah, okay, you
- 44:10Speaker 1: could probably run up this guy. You could probably line
- 44:12Speaker 1: up a guard and take him out. Okay, what's the
- 44:17Speaker 1: difference between what's happening now? Like a team that doesn't
- 44:20Speaker 1: even want to run the football, did that to you
- 44:22Speaker 1: Saturday night? Yeah, they just lined up and ran it
- 44:25Speaker 1: right down your throat. If you look at Singletary, we
- 44:28Speaker 1: had a really good game. Yeah. And if you look
- 44:30Speaker 1: at all the teams that are still alive, I think
- 44:33Speaker 1: maybe except for the forty Night, don't they all have
- 44:35Speaker 1: pretty dangerous offenses. You know, well yeah, yeah, since yeah, yeah,
- 44:40Speaker 1: I mean it's the age old thing. I know, everybody's oh,
- 44:43Speaker 1: you know, defense, defense beats offense every time, except for
- 44:47Speaker 1: like in the last ten years in the NFL. Well,
- 44:49Speaker 1: like there are exceptions always, there's no absolutes. But Kansas City, yep, Buffalo, Buffalo, Tampa,
- 44:59Speaker 1: the Rams, they all have really good offenses. Yeah, they
- 45:03Speaker 1: all have really good offense. Now probably that maybe the
- 45:05Speaker 1: team with the best defense of those teams might be
- 45:08Speaker 1: the one or just the one that makes interception at
- 45:11Speaker 1: the right the big play at the right time, right
- 45:13Speaker 1: and again, you know, like San Francisco, like Fred Warner,
- 45:16Speaker 1: another one of those line backups. You know, just these
- 45:19Speaker 1: guys just just run around and make plays. They might
- 45:22Speaker 1: not be like they might not have been able to
- 45:24Speaker 1: play fifteen twenty years ago. Yeah, but nowadays, I think
- 45:28Speaker 1: Juwan Bentley, Juan Bentley is a nice player, Like I
- 45:32Speaker 1: don't think he's a stiff. I just think that he's
- 45:35Speaker 1: more like Brandon Spikes. Yeah yeah, from a you know,
- 45:38Speaker 1: from a day gone by. I think he's an interesting
- 45:40Speaker 1: one to monitor for free agency because I think if
- 45:44Speaker 1: they let him go, it maybe signals all right, we're
- 45:46Speaker 1: gonna get away from that if they lock him up,
- 45:48Speaker 1: and which I think they probably could, and maybe should
- 45:50Speaker 1: they resigned, Like that's like to me, that's all I like,
- 45:55Speaker 1: again to Fred, watch what they do. They resigned another
- 45:59Speaker 1: like bigger, slower linebacker, up him off with twenty acl Yeah. Yeah,
- 46:04Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe I'm I was under the impression
- 46:06Speaker 1: he wasn't exactly that, you know, Okay, I mean maybe
- 46:10Speaker 1: you're right. I don't know. I mean, for whatever reason,
- 46:13Speaker 1: but I just think Bentley's a touchstone because you're gonna
- 46:16Speaker 1: lose a lot of leadership probably, and I mean he
- 46:19Speaker 1: is one guy that I think he's still only twenty
- 46:21Speaker 1: five twenty six, so you know, it's it's just each
- 46:23Speaker 1: one of these decisions I think will be interesting over
- 46:25Speaker 1: the course of the offseason because it'll tell you what
- 46:28Speaker 1: direction they're heading to. And it's also just in comparison
- 46:31Speaker 1: to this last game when you literally did nothing on defense,
- 46:34Speaker 1: you did nothing. It's it's hard to make comparisons because
- 46:39Speaker 1: everything would be better than nothing, you know. So I
- 46:42Speaker 1: don't know what direction they're going to go, but I
- 46:44Speaker 1: do think, like when I first started blogging Patriots, like
- 46:46Speaker 1: the thing that interests me most was how Bill was
- 46:48Speaker 1: going to rebuild the defense the first time. So in
- 46:50Speaker 1: that regard, I am I am interested in this offseason
- 46:53Speaker 1: to see how they do it schematically? Do they move
- 46:56Speaker 1: on from the veterans actively? Do they try to balance it?
- 46:59Speaker 1: Do they try to all right, let's keep van Noy around,
- 47:02Speaker 1: let's resign Bentley, but let's really try to integrate mcgroan
- 47:06Speaker 1: or you know, Jennings. They're going to come into these roles.
- 47:08Speaker 1: You know, how do they do it? Is it a
- 47:10Speaker 1: total teardown or is it kind of half in, half out?
- 47:12Speaker 1: I just worried that it's like for Bill Yeah, yeah, no,
- 47:15Speaker 1: I'll take the exceptional athlete. Yeah yet Lawrence Taylor. Yeah,
- 47:21Speaker 1: you know, who's who's like sixty three and two sixty
- 47:24Speaker 1: but runs like that, like you know, like a Dayalis
- 47:27Speaker 1: Thomas was supposed to be, you know, like this unbelievable specimen.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Who does it all? Like? And how do you perfect
- 47:34Speaker 1: players don't exist. How do you feel about Tom Brady?
- 47:38Speaker 1: How do you feel about Judon next year? Like going
- 47:40Speaker 1: into the year, this was something I was thinking about
- 47:42Speaker 1: Judon and Jackson and the guys on on my second
- 47:45Speaker 1: from my second out. I don't know if we set
- 47:48Speaker 1: it off here, but I am very very I want
- 47:50Speaker 1: to hear that Judon was hurt. I am very worried
- 47:52Speaker 1: about you, not not. I just want to hear that
- 47:54Speaker 1: he was hurt because that would explain things. Because his
- 47:57Speaker 1: production fell off the cliff. I mean, you know, it's
- 48:00Speaker 1: one of those things. Period, after each word he became
- 48:03Speaker 1: a fell it fell off the click. You gotta get
- 48:05Speaker 1: out of that. Yes, yes, what are we doing? But
- 48:08Speaker 1: but I want to hear that there was some answer
- 48:11Speaker 1: to why his production fell off the cliff. And if
- 48:15Speaker 1: it can't be that other teams were paying more attention
- 48:17Speaker 1: to him, because good players find a way. Um. So
- 48:21Speaker 1: I want to hear that he was injured. Yeah you
- 48:23Speaker 1: know I have an excuse, Yeah, yeah, Um, Todd's in
- 48:28Speaker 1: North Carolina. Hey Todd, Hey guys. My concerns is, Yeah,
- 48:34Speaker 1: the team, I think I'm not sure which I think
- 48:36Speaker 1: might have been deuced You guys basically said, they came out,
- 48:39Speaker 1: they looked Slot came out. You looked at Buffalo, they
- 48:41Speaker 1: were bouncing around, they were ready to go, and our
- 48:43Speaker 1: team had no motivation. So I'm not sure how much
- 48:46Speaker 1: you're really worried about, you know, defensive captains and such,
- 48:49Speaker 1: because I think what you need is we need leadership
- 48:52Speaker 1: from the coaching down and I don't think. I don't
- 48:54Speaker 1: think Bill had the tools to coach his style, but
- 48:58Speaker 1: then again, you still you have to adapt what you
- 49:00Speaker 1: have and that's what he's known for, and he didn't.
- 49:02Speaker 1: He didn't, he really did in that game. It looked
- 49:04Speaker 1: horrible to it, Like you guys said, the stars were
- 49:06Speaker 1: ore Pat Balks, and that's pretty horrible, right, all right, Tyed,
- 49:12Speaker 1: thanks for the call, short and sweet, Mike's and Florida,
- 49:16Speaker 1: what's up? Mike, Mike Hey, Mike Hey, Yeah, Sorry that man,
- 49:22Speaker 1: I don't need to say Michael Florida, Yeah, man. I
- 49:25Speaker 1: just wanted to ask you guys, at what point is
- 49:28Speaker 1: the standard the standard? What point do we start to
- 49:31Speaker 1: say that? Because I remember calling back in twenty nineteen
- 49:34Speaker 1: at the end of that year and there were some
- 49:36Speaker 1: people questioning whether or not Brady still could play. Maybe
- 49:38Speaker 1: he's done, and obviously he didn't have a lot of
- 49:41Speaker 1: talent around him. But like I said, I remember calling
- 49:43Speaker 1: you guys him staying, you know what. I hope he
- 49:45Speaker 1: leaves because Velicheck isn't giving this guy help. And I
- 49:48Speaker 1: think Brady is still Brady. He can still be the goal.
- 49:51Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, he doesn't need the quote
- 49:53Speaker 1: unquote greatest coach of all time, the genius and all that.
- 49:57Speaker 1: You give Brady a competent coach and web, he'll still
- 50:01Speaker 1: be Brady the standard as a standard. What did he
- 50:03Speaker 1: do the next year? He showed that he still He
- 50:06Speaker 1: went out and won a Super Bowl. Yeah, he had
- 50:07Speaker 1: talent around him and all of that, but he showed listen,
- 50:11Speaker 1: I'm still Brady. I can still do my thing. And
- 50:14Speaker 1: he's still showing that now. This week, obviously he has
- 50:16Speaker 1: a huge test, a lot of his players are hurt.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I think I don't know if he'll win, but if
- 50:21Speaker 1: he does win again, he's still showing that. Look, I
- 50:24Speaker 1: have lesser talent, but I can still elevate the guys
- 50:27Speaker 1: around me to deliver up to that standard because he's
- 50:29Speaker 1: missing a lot of those weapons. Now finally stand to
- 50:33Speaker 1: like Mike Evans. Yeah, yeah, well yeah, he said, obviously
- 50:36Speaker 1: he has weapons still. But my point is, at what
- 50:39Speaker 1: point do we start to say, okay, Belicheck, the standard
- 50:42Speaker 1: is the standard. When Brady was here, you want to lie, Yeah,
- 50:45Speaker 1: he had great defensive schemes. Yeah, you contributed this and that,
- 50:48Speaker 1: But how many times did Brady carry a subpar of
- 50:52Speaker 1: paper champion defense to a title game, to a Super Bowl,
- 50:56Speaker 1: to at least a playoff victory? How many times did
- 50:59Speaker 1: he do that? The Tech didn't have to carry Brady
- 51:02Speaker 1: A lot of those times. Brady had to carry those
- 51:04Speaker 1: subpart defenses. And now that he's gone, it's only been
- 51:07Speaker 1: two years. True enough, last year, if you want to
- 51:10Speaker 1: dismiss that, Cam and Covid all that, okay whatever. This year,
- 51:14Speaker 1: this team, the Lisa Desas, they ain't even gonna talk
- 51:16Speaker 1: about offense. The defense looked just like it did in
- 51:19Speaker 1: twenty nineteen. There was a few games here and there
- 51:21Speaker 1: with oh, yeah, we're great, Oh the boogey man, Oh
- 51:23Speaker 1: didn't really say that, hahaha. Then when it was time
- 51:26Speaker 1: to do something in the postseason, nothing, the same thing
- 51:29Speaker 1: towards the ladder half of this year, and then a
- 51:31Speaker 1: game we just saw on Saturday. Man, those guys were frauds.
- 51:34Speaker 1: And I think Mike hit the nail on the head
- 51:37Speaker 1: in the post game show he said, when we just saw,
- 51:39Speaker 1: how can you not question everything that you saw this
- 51:42Speaker 1: entire year? How can you not bringing the question whether
- 51:45Speaker 1: or not this team has been a fraudulent team all year?
- 51:47Speaker 1: And then Paul started staying, well, yeah, you know when
- 51:49Speaker 1: you played Cleveland, a lot of people were hurt. When
- 51:52Speaker 1: you played Atlanta, you know this and that of you
- 51:54Speaker 1: gave an example, and I'm like, yeah, you know what,
- 51:56Speaker 1: how can you not do that? I mean, it's just
- 52:00Speaker 1: so so to sum it up, Mike, are you are
- 52:03Speaker 1: you questioning the players or the coaching? Are you saying
- 52:07Speaker 1: that it's I'll be clear, I'm questioning, and I apologize
- 52:11Speaker 1: if I wasn't because I'm frustrated. So somebody went on, yeah,
- 52:16Speaker 1: I'm questioning the coaching with Belichick, and I'm wondering, at
- 52:20Speaker 1: what point do you guys get to that point too
- 52:23Speaker 1: and say, you know what, Brady isn't gone. Belichick, like
- 52:26Speaker 1: the previous callers just said, you have to prove yourself
- 52:29Speaker 1: in a post Rady error if you're the greatest coach
- 52:32Speaker 1: of all time, just like Brady. So the standard is
- 52:35Speaker 1: the standard. You will have to be able to do
- 52:37Speaker 1: that too. You can't get embarrassed in the playoffs and
- 52:39Speaker 1: you're the greatest coach of all time defensively, man, get
- 52:42Speaker 1: out of you. I hear you, and that I hear you.
- 52:46Speaker 1: And like in nineteen Mike you were saying, you know,
- 52:49Speaker 1: Brady can't he needs some weapons, you know, and all that,
- 52:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna say the same thing about Bill. He needs help.
- 52:56Speaker 1: He needs assistance that are going to help him. He
- 53:00Speaker 1: can't do it all on his own, you know. So
- 53:04Speaker 1: I think that's something that Bill's gonna have to evaluate,
- 53:07Speaker 1: is you know, who are the people that are helping
- 53:11Speaker 1: me make this team go? You know? Yeah, I mean
- 53:14Speaker 1: a lot of turnover in the last few years, and
- 53:16Speaker 1: I mean it felt good about these guys. You know,
- 53:18Speaker 1: this coaching staffs like they were maybe making some progress.
- 53:21Speaker 1: But I mean the special team's mistakes throughout the year,
- 53:24Speaker 1: the defense's inability to do anything after you saw the
- 53:27Speaker 1: same thing for four weeks ago. I mean that that
- 53:29Speaker 1: to me is it is it's an indictment of the
- 53:31Speaker 1: staff and getting guys ready and how motivated are they.
- 53:34Speaker 1: There was no real progression. There was no adjustment that
- 53:37Speaker 1: didn't really seem like guys were buying in at the
- 53:38Speaker 1: end of all. Right, So we're gonna talk about that
- 53:40Speaker 1: after the break. We talked a lot about the team
- 53:43Speaker 1: and the games and the players and the games they've played.
- 53:46Speaker 1: We'll talk about the coaching and all that stuff a
- 53:48Speaker 1: little bit more when we get back from the break.

- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Radio at Patriots dot com is the email address. Lots
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: of emails, lots of calls. People need to talk, and
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I understand that that's why we're here. But we are
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: in our offseason schedule now, so we're gonna be here
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: Tuesdays and Thursdays through the offseason Tuesdays and Thursday, same
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: same bat time, twelve o'clock. And then of course as
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: we get closer to the draft, we'll start our draft
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: prospect podcasts and and all that stuff. So you know,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: we'll keep pumping out the content. As I told the
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: team this morning, I look at this as chapter two.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Chapter one of this story happened, you know, with the
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: drafting of Mac in this year. But you know what
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: we're going to do is just a continuation of that story.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Now you know, we're we are turning the page, but
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: you know it's still the same story. Now, is what
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: happens in the second year of the Mac Jones era. Yeah,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: that was kind of what I wrote a little bit
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: on Sunday, was just you know, I think for a
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: lot of Patriot fans, you might look at that loss
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: and see it as the end of something Patriots would
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: whether it be you know, some of the veterans you know,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: or just the Bills really asserting their dominance atop the division.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: But for guys like Mac, this is the start of something,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: and this is you know, the first chapter and their
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: kind of journey. And I mean, certainly Buffalo has laid
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: down the gauntlet for this Patriots team and what they
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: have to do. And I think that at least that
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: as what I like about the focus that you have
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: of the Bills, the Dolphins, the teams that kind of
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: beach a. I'm not really worried about beating the Kansas
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Cities and the Cincinnatis and all those of the world.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I think you go in, you focus on the division,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: what you need to do to get better, and like
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: our callers are saying, I think there's a lot of
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: moves to be made on defense and trying to find
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: a new defense of core that can take you take
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: you to where any you know, silver linings, you know,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: I think it's good for Mac to have a guy
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: who's way ahead of him in the division, like I
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: got a long way to go and it's right there.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: That's I'm not even close him twice every day. You
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: play Buffalo every year. I don't look at it that way,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: you know. So I got a lot of work to do.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I never thought JP Losman benefited whatsoever from having to
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: chase Brady. I don't think. I don't think JP Lostman
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: has what Mac has, but very similarly drafted. Okay, well
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: I think that with a similar skill set. All right,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: So now my point isn't Jpta Paul thinks that JP
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Lossman is the same as Mac Jones Mark, I won't
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: argue with that, but anywhere you didn't think Mac is
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: very good? My point wasn't My point wasn't JP Losman.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: My point was, I don't think it's beneficial for a
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: young quarterback to have a guy light years ahead of
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: him that he has to chase. I don't think any
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: of the myriad rookie quarterbacks that came into the AFC's
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: benefited at all from having Brady in the division to
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: realize it's how far they had to go. I don't
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: think that's a good thing. No, but that was, yeah,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: if you're at my point, was right, But I yeah,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: And I just think there's a clarity of what you
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: need to do and who you need to beat and
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: what it's going to take. And and that clarity is
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: starts in the division as it always does. Right all right? Um,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: I told, I said before the break that we were
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: going to, you know, tackle some of this coaching situation too,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: and I want to do that before you do that
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: real quick. I just want to set everybody's mind at ease.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: When Fred mentioned at the top that, as he said
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: to the team this morning, he met us content yea,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: not the team. Thank you, Paul, Thank you Paul. Before
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: anybody has a heart attack thinking that Fred called a
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: team meeting and Ka Jones and the boys don't listening
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: to Fredante. Dante got something on my team, not the team. Yeah,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: uh yeah, So I do. We do want to talk
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: about coaching, but we have you know, people calling in
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: so I don't know what they want to talk about.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: We'll see Rashad's in Baltimore. What's up, Rashad, what's up?
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: What's up? Well, I mean we could talk about coaching.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I definitely think coach coaching it's an issue because it's
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: like nothing, nothing schematically like changes, and we definitely have
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: to investment speed. We have to get speed everywhere. I'm
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: very interrested. And what we're gonna do this off season
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: for defense, Like, defensively, we're not gonna have you know,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: all the ogs, you know Slater, he probably gonna you know,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: high time with mccordy. So we were like, we're gonna, like,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: we're gonna need some talent um. What I'm thinking with
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: the twenty first pin, usually at that spot people we
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: even trade back or something like that. So this is
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: one of them. Me is where I'm hoping the Patriots
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: actually trade back, maybe get some more picks and acquire
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: some more talent. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good point. That's
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: a good point. Thanks for Sean. He wants to trade down.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: I don't quantity. Yeah, I don't like the idea of
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: like having a pre existing right plan, Like I need
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: to see what's available. I have no idea about this
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: draft at all. I haven't done any Yeah, you know
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: that there's a couple of the you know, the exceptional
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: players that when you watch on Saturday's stand out. But
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I don't know anything about the draft right now. Um,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: but I don't. I would never go into a draft
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: with the blanket they need to trade down. Yeah, no,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: you can't do that because you just don't know that
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: they need to trade out. There's too many. And Bill
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: tries to tell us there's too many. You know, tell
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: me what every other team's gonna do, and then I'll
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: tell you what we're gonna do. But you don't know,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: you know, Speaking of which, we are locked in at
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: twenty one, Yes, twenty first overall in the draft. Quite
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: quite a few Patriots been selected at that possession over
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: the years. Chandler Jones Vincibleforchandler, Daniel Graham. Do you just
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: call them Chandler of Chandler. That's one of my ticks, Schandler, Schandler,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Blounts make sense. Chandler does not Chandler chand It's too
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: much like shoo. It's it's it's it's the French Canadian enemies.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: It's not you smoked the gung what you know, you
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: smoke the chronic. I'm sorry at tronicnic right. Greg's in Tennessee.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: What's up, Greg? Yeah, there's a going guys. Good afternoon.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Ye yo, um. I think if I speak for all
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: the Patriots fans out there, I know it hurts, but
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna put a band aid on the on the
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: cut here and give you some good wisdom here. But
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: all I gotta say is, you know it ain't over
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: for now. It is, and I understand it hurts, trust me,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: it hurts. But the way I look at it as
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: we've been spoiled for twenty seasons with Tom Brady. Okay,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: we've been through his ups and downs. We're gonna go
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: through that with Mac Jones a lot, and that's okay. Well,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: at the same time, I look at it this way,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I'm thankful for Mac Jones. I'm thankful for this team.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: I love this team, and you know what, can wait
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: to see if we get some wide receivers. Maybe who knows,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: But like I said, this is another rebuild year and
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: that's okay. So thank you guys for having me on
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: the show. Sure, thanks great, thank you. Yeah, let's go
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: to Sean and Vancouver. Hey Sean, okay if you team. So.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: The one right thing of twenty twenty was the special teams.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: They played well and Camcord was the you know, that
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: was his first really well on his own, like he
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: was assistant before, but that he was there. My point is,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: like people say, well, you know, let's just bring back
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Joe Judge and that should solve that. I don't know,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: I mean, what's the difference. It was the same players
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: as twenty twenty as there wasn't in twenty twenty one.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: There it seems like there might be something else going
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: on with special teams. I don't know. They invest a
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: lot in terms of personnel specifically for special teams. What
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: we saw this year, we haven't really seen. This is
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: like the worst we've seen the worst. I don't think
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: they've been anywhere near as good as they traditionally are
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: for a while now. Yeah, but they were really bad.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: They were really bad. They were pretty good coverage in
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: twenty twenty year. I think the coverage has been leaky.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: I think they disguised some problems last year when Gunner
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: had the big returns against the Chargers and you know, Bailey,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: I don't think was as good as he's been even then.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: You know, right, he had a drip and he he
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: also had an injury early on in this year, And
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: I don't know how much of that was a factor
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: in the way he performed, but he clearly like wasn't
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: the same player that he had been. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: feel like an answer, like, Segain, is there an answer
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: this year for twenty twenty two? Is there something that
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: we can help fix this? Like we have a lot
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: of money spent on that area. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: I mean, and it felt like an anomaly. Like in
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: season it felt like and what's up with the special teams?
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: But now at the end, it feels like it was
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: just kind of representative of the whole package this year.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Like I'll say, the block punts, I'll put that like,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: you're not going to get that kind of a problem
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: every year, Well you get three three of them? Yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: you know, but I agree with Mike. I mean, from
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the first game to the last game, special teams penalties
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: were a problem pretty much every week. Yeah yeah, yea,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: thanks Sean, Right, and and it'd be one thing if
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: they didn't, you know, have half dozen guys that were
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: clearly just special teams contributors, but they've put such an
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: emphasis on that part of the game that it's done.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: That's why I like after that game right now, I'm like,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: not now, Special teams, I'm not. I don't have time
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: to worry about you right now. I'll get to you this.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: I still need to do an exhaustive research on that.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I want to know how many teams have that many
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: similar amount of guys like Brandon Inge, I don't play
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: a position, they just play special teams. I don't know, Like,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: I have no idea how many Slaters Bethel Cody Davis
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: is there are on other Doesn't it seem like a lot? Though,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I don't I really don't know. Yeah, we don't. You know,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: that's a good question. We need to know the facts
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: we can find that on. I'm just saying, what is
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: your gut teller? Does it seem like a lot? I
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: don't know. I have no idea. I think it seems
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: average to me. I don't know, stepping stepping away. There
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: are guys that I don't know on other teams that
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: generally go down and cover the punts, like I don't
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: know their names from playing defense. Right, So my guess
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: is most teams have about a half dozen of those guys.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Shouldn't up. I'm I'm gonna do some crack research over
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: the next two days, So I want it right, I'm
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: gonna do something. I'm gonna do some research on that.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: Look at the snap counts from the season. Look how
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: many guys on each team were solely special teams and
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: get a sense of it. Yeah, yeah, I got you. Uh,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: let's go to uh speed and Fresno, what's up? Speed?
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: I think maybe greatest accomplishment this season is getting in
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: good with Bill. You know, his confident on the sideline,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: which I don't think is a good sun. Well, that's
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: a really good point. Should Bill have to spend that
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: much time talking to a special team's coordinator? Did he
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: look annoyed the other night? Was that the other night?
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Or is that Miami game? Not that they were like walking,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: they were walking like with him, you know the play
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I'm talking about. First. I remember somebody commenting that they
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: were looked like he was annoyed with Bill walking off
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: the field, walking off the field maybe at behalf. I
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: think it was Miami, but I'm not sure he's annoyed. Yeah,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: that's different. Yeah, I was thinking, isn't that rich? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I am concerned about about Bill still kind of sticking
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: with a guy like that, and maybe wasn't that that
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: productive on the stat because still stubborn, and Bill's old,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: and there's a lot to do both on offense and
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: defense in terms of rebuilding. I just wonder, I don't
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: really see that there's a realistic timeline for Bill to
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: get back on top, meaning get back to the super Bowl,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: whateverything that needs to be done. Yeah, all right, there's
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: enough time. Well you mean before he retires, Yeah, I do.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: I think. I not infinity, Yeah, no, but I think
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: I think I think in a couple of years. Yeah,
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: you could be back there. Sure, So that that means
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: that if that happens, that means Mac made some I think,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: some impressive strides. And that's like my other thing that
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: I was wondering about. You got because Josh Allen, I
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: think that everybody this consensus that he was given where
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: he was in his rookie year, Josh Allen with his accuracy,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: it's been pretty surprising and pretty impressive how he's improved
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: and max challenged by contrast, coming from his rookie years
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: to not accuracy so much as the arm strength and
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: the throwing skill set. And I was curious if you
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: guys think that which of those challenges is greater, like
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: what Josh Allen overcame accuracy wise, or what Max has
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: to overcome with his his throwing skill set. I'll pick
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: it off. I think you know Josh is a huge
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: athletically gifted rocket arm. I mean, it was just getting
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: his head decision making and touch h there's the hardest
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: working member of the team that TI. Yeah, I would
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: agree with Mike, and I would just I would just
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: add that I think that the improvement that Alan is
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: making in terms of there's a couple of things. So,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: I mean, you can certainly improve your mechanics, and I
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: think he's done that, but I don't think he is
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: like night and day better in terms of his accuracy
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: than he was. What's better is his understanding of what
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: he's doing. Yeah, and the and the schemes that Brian Dable.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: That's why I would say for for Buffalo, you're gonna
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: have to sweat out another offseason hoping that Dabel doesn't
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: get a head coaching job, because I do think that
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: that's an important part of his development. Now maybe you've
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: gotten him to the point where he can work with somebody,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: he can work with somebody else, and yeah, he doesn't
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: need to have his handheld. I still think he's the
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: kind of guy that needs to have his handheld a
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: little bit to stay on the straight and narrow. And remember,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: you know, we're not playing rocketball. But I mean, honestly,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: if you were asking him to throw like a fifteen
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: yard out, I'm not sure how much better he throws
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: it today than he did as a rookie. The difference
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: is the schemes that he's asked to perform in now
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: he's much more comfortable doing than he was as a rookie.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: When you know what you're doing and you understand what
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: you're doing, I think he knows defense is better he
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: was looking at, which which of course applies to Mac too.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: But I just don't think Josh Allen was starting from
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: a place of ridiculous physical talent. That just is, you know,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: And I do think that the biggest improvement that quarterbacks
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: make is the understanding, you know, the just the way
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: the game operas, the defense and what they're doing in
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: the adjustments that they make. I think Mac is already
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: sort of ahead of the curve on that, so I
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: worry about what he has to what he has to
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: improve on. Yeah, the other thing kind of the intangible
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: that you can't say what will happen, But what if
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Bills do go all the way this year and they
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: win it? You know, dealing with that type of success,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: A lot of teams haven't been able to. You know,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: that's something that you don't know, right, but you know,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: in terms of the AFC, there are going to be
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: some teams that don't go all the way and they'll
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: be I mean I think that they're they're ahead of you,
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: and that's that's the problem. I think that's what Spie
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: is talking about, Like be a couple of years, you know,
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: it could be a while. I would think that something
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: would have to happen to drastically have Buffalo, Kansas City, Cincinnati.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: You know, those kinds of teams really fall off. Tennessee.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I'm not as sure about because I think they're kind
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: of tenuous. But I also could see the Chargers going.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: You know, they could go one of two ways. I
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: think the Raiders, if they can get you know, a
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: good coaching staff in could go one of two ways,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: there are other teams that I think are dealing with
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: a similar amount or better talent than you have. That's
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: that didn't used to be the case in the AFC.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: You brought up the Raiders. I just wanted to mention
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: news wise since the game ended. Uh, that's that's one. Yeah,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: that's the one I was just going to bring up.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: That happened since Saturday Day's game, the Raiders have asked
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: to interview not only Gerard Mayo for head coach, but
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: Dave Ziegler for their open GM position. So that's probably legit.
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: So let's usually right, Let's just take a moment to
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: kind of update what we know in terms of interview requests.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: I got a Raiders are Mayo and Elliot Wolf, and
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Mayo also go one to the Broncos I think tomorrow.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Uh yeah, also Mayo at Houston, right? Uh oh Houston, Yeah,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: I get my list here. Yeah, but yeah, Elliot Wolf
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: has interviewed I believe or is going to with the
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Bears and Vikings. Uh, Ziegler with the Raiders. Um, who
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: did you ask me about Mayo? Oh? Mayo? Yeah? Um?
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Mayo is that another tick? Um? B Flow interviewed with
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: Houston over the weekend connection there, But yeah, Mayo the Bears,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: I believe was the other one that he was connected with.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: What do you think they're asking Mayo about? Yeah? So
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: who runs? Yeah, well Patricia got a job after that.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: I mean, one of the emailers wondered, you know, does
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: this weekend's results affect those guys that are doing interviews.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: I don't know if it does, but definitely that's a
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: question I asked them. It's like, hey, what happened, Yeah,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: what happened down the stretch with the Tyeah? Now, I
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: was making a joke about the Patricia thing. Clearly he
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: already had the job before the debacle in the Super
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Bowl against Philadelphia. But yeah, the other thing you do,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: I mean, you're basing it on a game. Yeah you don't,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: but you you're curious about their explanation. The other thing
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I found interesting was I saw that the tweet about
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Mayo interviewing with the Raiders. Well, one of the tweets
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: was from our our old pal the rap the crap Sheet,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: and he referred to Mayo as the de facto defensive coordinate. Right.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I'm like people thought that initially, like a year or
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: two ago, when he and Steve were kind of like
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: both rising up. But then it's sort of swayed to
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: people thinking Steve is this. Well, I've heard everybody refused
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: to Steve as the play Bill from what everything I've heard,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Bill is the fact. That's what I think, right, Yeah,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: but none of us know, and that could be. I
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: saw someone refer to Dave Ziegler as the de facto
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: general manager. That's false. Well we know that's not true. Yeah,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: m Ramon and Tampa. I'm listening to everything you say,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: and the solution seems obvious, Yet I hear a tremendous
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: amount of hesitation from you. I think we need to
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: overhaul the team, and that means Bill and the coaching staff.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: I believe it's a disservice to have Bill continue to
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: coach the team for the sole purpose that he won't
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: be around in the intermediate future. Respect and appreciate Bill
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: a lot more than I did yesteryear, but I think
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: we need a sweeping change. If we're going to have
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: growing pains, I'd rather be with a new regime. So
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: he's calling for Bill to be fighting everybody. If you
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: blow up the head coach, blowing up everything you know,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: but you know, like I said before, I think I
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: think Tom Brady's the greatest ever yet even he needed help,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: you know, And I think Bill is the greatest ever,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and I think he needs help. Yeah, and i's your
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: big coaching take, right, No, I just know I'm being serious,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: but I think that he needs to look at the
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: people that are helping him run this team well and
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: at along goes line. Here's a serious question too. Let's
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: assume Mayo gets either the Raiders or the Broncos jobs,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: the two jobs he's interviewing for, or Houston or Houston. Yeah,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: let's assume he gets one of these openings. That's that's
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: there right now. Who does he take from this staff?
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Because usually when a guy leaves a staff to become
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: a head coach, he generally takes at least one or
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: two or three current colleagues. And he doesn't have that
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: type of thing where he has the guys that will
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: come with him because he's never coached before. No, but
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I mean neither did Brian Flores. And Brian Flores picked
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: from this staff when he went to Miami. He managed
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: right right, and Bill had to like Bill had like
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: this pharmacistic staff that he'd like to say, is the
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: defensive QUI like Covington. Yeah, you know he's been around,
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: He's been around for five years, right, Yeah, you know,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: maybe he wants to take him as a defense you
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: know what, That would be the best thing for Steve Belichick.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: But no, but yeah, both of them to go to
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: another team and succeed is the best thing that could
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: happen to him. But but what do you do it?
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: You know, I don't know, like Eric's point, Brian Flores
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: did it with you know, Josh Boyer and Shadow Shay
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: and those guys. And who's the quarterback? I think he
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: took Patrick Graham too, and then they ended up firing
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Graham right away, right, and then Graham went to the Giants,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: right who was jo Chuplinsky? Jerry Schuplinsky. He went to
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: the he ended up going to Miami first, and then
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: he went to the Giants and he But that's I'm
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: just saying, like Bill's staff could be even thinner at
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: the end of this process. If Mayo gets one of
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: these jobs and takes a few of these people, like like, yeah,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: like you named a couple of those guys, not what
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: does he do because a lot of those guys who
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: were on the staff now were long time coaching assistants
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: or you know, yeah they work there anywhere. Who's who's
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: in line there now? Like anywhere? Billy Yates, Vinison Siri,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: like guys like guys like that, who are I mean
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: they're they're on the staff currently, but like who fills
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: in those roles? Well, you might have to this is
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: what eight open coaching vacancies right now or how many
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: open coaching vacancies whatever that number is. That everybody on
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: those staffs are pluckable. You know, they're all hanging dangling
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: in the wind until the next coach. So every every
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: member of those staffs that have open head coach at
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: vacancies are there for the taking. That's a quarter of
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: the league. Yeah, there's a lot of guys out there.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: It's like every every year you get halfway through, three
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: quarters of the way through, and everybody's like, not going
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to be as many openings this year. I mean what
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: there always are always ends up being between six and
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: eight yep. And you know, now, as a first year
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: head coach, can you say no to an offer? I
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: don't think you can. I think you got to take
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: whatever's offered to you. Just to get your foot in
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: the door. And let's say he goes down to Houston, right,
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: so he's gonna have Cassario helping him out. And I'm
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: sure he trusts Cassario, and I'm sure Cassario will have
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: input into hey, why don't you bring this guy in?
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Why don't you bring that guy in? So he'll have
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: help bring recruiting uh down there. But yeah, it's it's
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: it'd be interesting if if Mayo or Flores, you know,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: either one of those pages. I consider those two Patriots guys.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: That's why if they could get to Shaun Watson to play,
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: Like right, everybody looks like, why would you take the
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Houston job? Like, well, maybe they have some information, maybe
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: I have a quarter. But with all the talk about
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Watson wanting to go to Miami, that was when Flores
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: was coaching there. Right now that he's not there, does
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: he still want to go? Many conflicting reports about that,
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: like Flora's wanted him, which is part of the rift,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: But that was part of that. Stephen Ross thought it
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: was unfair the way he was leaving too. Oh yeah,
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: and now people are saying no, in fact, it was
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Ross that wanted him. Well what what what about this
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: scenario Flores goes to Houston and he says to Ron Mayo,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: you're my the fact, you're my guy, You're my defensive coordinator,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: nobody else. You come here, you'll have the title yourself
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: and maybe groar and lieu of you know, actually getting
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: an offer for a head coach takes that. I would
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: think he would wait to find out if he's going
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: to be a head coach now, oh yeah, but when
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: he finds out he's not, if he's not that, yeah,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: I see if he goes for you know, if he
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: goes for a promotion too, right, isn't that the new
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: rule there with right, he doesn't have the title that
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: would be doesn't so it has to be like but
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: it's even if he goes from where he is now
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: to a defensive coordinator, that would qualify. It doesn't have
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: to be a head coach. I don't believe it's because
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: I know, like the head coach like David Culley got
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: the Ravens a couple of compensatory third round picks, which
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I don't really understand that rule, but yeah whatever, they
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: just love to hand out these compensatory draft picks. But nothing. Yeah,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: I don't get it, uh wand writes in He's from Stratford.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Just had a dream scenario to run by your crew.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: I really like what I saw from B Flow as
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: a head coach down in Miami. What are your thoughts
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: in a scenario will Bill steps back solely as GM
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: and B Flow takes on the head coaching job. I
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: love to hear your opinion. I don't see it. Would
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: you want to do that? If you Brian Flores, No, no, no,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: And Bill wasn't built the same. Bill didn't want to
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: do it at the Jets, but whether he was coming
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: back to coach and he was like, say that accurate? Yeh.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Bill was asked flat out on Sunday if he was
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: coming back. Yeah. Nobody asks of this team though. I
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: think that was the assumption. I do too, But nobody
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: said those words. What if? What if nobody leaves? Do
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: you need to make some changes? Do you have to
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: make some additions? You know? I mean, I know that
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: this has been a little bit of process in terms
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: of filling in some of the gaps that were taken.
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: You know, like what you said when Flora's laugh took
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: a lot of long time assistance guys who had stability.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Ivan fears possibly could retire this year as well. Yeah, um,
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: you know, so I just think of how it ended.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: I'm really not attached to this coaching staff as a whole,
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: and so I think something needs to happen. Everybody says
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Joe Judge, you know, he's just plug him back in,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: like you know, Ay, does he want to just be
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: a special teams coordinator? Right and just go right? That's
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: the best he can do and be might be? What
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: you know? I don't and I don't know the details
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: of this, But what is he getting paid from the Giants?
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: And what does he potentially sacrifice? I heard he's yeah, right,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: So I think he's getting ten million for the next
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: two or three years from the Giants. So he takes
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: a job, that's right, that's gonna be off that. I
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: don't know if he has offset, I don't know. I
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: don't know what the contract called. Right, But most of
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: these contracts, if you take another job, we don't have
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: or we don't have to pay all of it, or
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: we'll only pay the difference. Yeah, you know, that's the
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: whole Ballima thing. But but I even think that they've
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: sort of tied up some of those loose ends that
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: you can't do that anymore. Like if you want to
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: get if you take another job, yeah, you forfeit your salary.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: You're dying. Yeah, you had to pass up ten million
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: for the five Well, I mean that's yeah. Like that's
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: why I wonder what Matt how Maddy P's working it
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: because he's got like the Kush job and just kind
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: of the concilia. And that's that's why he doesn't have
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: a title on the staff. It's like an advisor. Um.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: But back to your question, like what do you do?
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: I do think you have to shore up this whole
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: defensive coordinator things. I don't want Bill being the defensive coordinator.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: I don't I want him to be. I want him
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: to be able to like pick and choose what he's
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: doing on a daily basis and where he wants to
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: focus his attention, you know, So I need I think
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: I want to you know, uh, experienced defensive coordinator to
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: take that. Of course Bill's gonna have input but that,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: but spread that input over everything and so that he
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: doesn't during the game have to turn his back on
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: the offense and speak to the defense, you know what
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: I mean. Yeah, Yeah, it's just a tough position, because
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: what do you mean, you know, just to throw out
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: like a Dan P's type guy. You come in, you
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: make him DC and you tell Steve and Gerard that
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: they're still the linebackers coaches, And I just how does it?
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: How does he do it? How would he make the move,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: you know, to kind of demote those guys or promote
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: them if he and if he so chose, and how
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: how how much more difficult does it make it that
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: they're related to the head coach? Does I mean it different?
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: Does he demote his own son? Does it? Like? How
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: does how does that work? Shaughnessy territory? Right? And so
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: what he wrote about that it's a very fair Oh
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: it is, it is. Did you read it? I did
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: read it, But it's it's a very fair column. But
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: he's not saying that that this is this problem existing.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: It's a B and C. He's saying, what what a
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: difficult Yes, what a difficult position it is to be in? Yeah,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: I mean I think I said it on the part.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's you know, it's it's really hard,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: especially when it ended like it did. And of course
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: the tough Boston media, who you know, has to rail
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: against every all things Shaughnessy because he's the only one
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: with a backbone that's left. Um, they're all quote, they
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: all site all the stats of the defense over the
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: last three years. I think it's worked out okay, Like,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: oh okay, that that looked because that looked like the
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: second ranked defense in the NFL. I know that's you
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: want to talk about cognitive dissonance with fans like this
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: is like, there's no there's no more extreme example than
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: this defense. You can't figure out that what happened Saturday
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: is closer to reality than number two in the league. Yeah,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: I can't help you. I can't help you because what
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: happens Saturday is basically what happens when they play a
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: team that has an offense. Uh Sebastian in Germany writes
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: in in a short sideline video of the miked up Harris,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: it sounded like he had a goodbye hug with running
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: back coach Ivan Fears. You think that was Ivan's last season?
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: And what do you think will be the impact of
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: him leaving? It could be we're hearing anytime you got
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: a guy it's been around that long. I think any
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: year could be the last year. Yeah, and they did
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: have an assistant running backs coach, so I mean you
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: can't just automatically assume a way with him last year too.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: I mean, you had some guys get some experience there.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: They've been I think, kind of preparing for this eventuality,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: but some certainly some questions though. And he's just such
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: a I mean talk about a bummer just not having
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: him or I mean he was always whenever the coaches
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: to watch I haven't. I mean that it was always
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: one of the first ones I'd hop into just to
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: hear what he had to say. Always honest and full
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: of stories. And the good thing is if you miss
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: it the first time, you always repeated it. Yeah, two
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: times hight five five pats, five hundred. Let's get back
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: to some of these phone callers who are holding on
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: Alex Chicago. What's up Alex, Hey, guys, how's it going good? Uh? So,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: I didn't get a chance to listen to the post game.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: I didn't I couldn't listen to the first half of
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: the podcast. So I'm gonna say some things people I've
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: already said, but I kind of just want to get
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: it off my chest. So I'm twenty five, I've been
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: a Patriots fan since two thousand and eight, so I'm
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: pretty new. I'm one of the newer fans. I've never
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: seen us ever play a game where it just looked
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: like we quit. I mean, the Chiefs game was bad,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: the Jets divisional game was pretty bad. There was that
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Ravens game in the late two thousands, but this is
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: the first time I felt like we weren't there. And
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: you can talk, I mean, we could talk all we
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: want about the Bill's talent. They have the better quarterback, yes,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: but it was shocking to me how sort of apathetic
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: and just how the players just didn't care. And call
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: me a conspiracy theorist, but I think Bill lost the
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: team at some point towards the end of the season.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: I don't know if it was the bye week, I
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: don't know if it was somewhere around the cold game,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: but there was a clear lack of effort, lack of discipline,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: and just the lack of focus. I felt like this
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: team was playing with end the year, and I just
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: want to ask you guys if you felt the same way.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: I mean, not nothing to do with X as a nose,
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: just a purew looked on the field from an emotional perspective.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: That's all I got. Okay, I can you know, I
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: know Paul's gonna poo poo me. But if I if
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I had evidence, if I had reason to say, yeah,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: I think Bill did lose him, I would say it.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: I don't see where that is. I I just from
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: from the young guys to the old guys, everybody talked
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: the right talk. I didn't get any sense of yeah,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: you know, I'm not you know, we're getting the wrong
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: messages here. I didn't get a sense of that. Yeah,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: like if if anything, I got a sense that it
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: was a good locker room. You know. Yeah, I don't
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: know that. And we we talked about the locker room
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: ast tive or six weeks ago. We don't see it,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: and I don't know. I still don't know, you know.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: But like Mike, I think Mike felt like there was
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: you know, a lack of sort of intensity or yeah, focus,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: I thought focus is a way to put it to
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: It was just they didn't look engaged in the games.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: My personal feeling is, I mean, I know Eugene Phillips
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: talked about the you know, something happened after the bye,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and we have to identify that that's something we got
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: to figure out. Um. I think the only thing that
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: changed after the bye was the caliber of competition, and
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: I will stand by that until I see something proven otherwise.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: I just thought of something that might point to raise
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: your hand. I just thought of something that might point
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: might point to what Alex was saying. Mccordy and maybe
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: a couple other defensive guys talked about not getting the
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: right calls, we had the wrong call we had. You know,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: you said that. I think in the first Bills game
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: after the Dallas game you said it. Yeah, So maybe
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: maybe that's something there was. Also we brought up last
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: week about van Noy was on somebody's podcast of Chris Long, right, yeah,
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: and when talking about judeon yeah, and you know how
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: he gets I don't know why he gets to go
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: running right, Okay, like all that stuff. There's another one
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: that's a couple of And then there was one other
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: example that came a few weeks ago and now I
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: can't remember. Somebody said something in a press conference that
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: can I gave us a little And again, just because
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: we have some of those examples doesn't make that a
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: bad locker room. I don't. I don't know that. I'm
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: not trying to say it doesn't, but I'm just a
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: few weeks ago when Slater said we have to dig
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: in and do X Y Z cliches, We'll see which
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: way we go, Like, I thought that was telling that
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: that's not generally about that, That's not generally how they
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: talk about it. We have we have choices, and one
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: choice choices to let it, but it's snowball and and
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: quit or you know the other choices to to to
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: dig in and fight, right, And I know, you know,
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I know what I feel like that we have in
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: this locker room something like that, But I just thought
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: it was odd that he was openly yeah. Um, but
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: I really think too. And I'm not saying that those
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: other things on a factor like Mike's talking about, you know,
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: the focus, I think they were on focus, but I
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: think they were on foc periodically throughout the season. I
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: think that when you put it on coming out flat
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: and Zoe and Beatle did this yesterday on one of
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: my shows, Fred you know, came out flat again, didn't
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: show like I think you're just taking the talent part
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: of it out of you and you're just whistling past
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: the graveyard thinking this is on us, right, I don't
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: think this is on it. If you think it's all
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: about just coming out flat then hired Dan Campbell as
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: your head coach and so we can fire him up,
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: that's not what it is. I don't think, you know.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: And again I'm not telling you that the effort the
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: other night was exemplary. I don't think it was. And
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: I think this is probably as good a time any
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: to get to the stuff that like the fact that
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Judon barely played was telling to Fred's point, maybe there's
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: an injury there that we don't know about. J C. Jackson,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: I thought made a lot of business choices in that game.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: I did not think he was engaged at all. First
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: of all, he got beat again by Stefan Diggs. Again,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: Digs is a great player, I get it, um, but
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I need I need him to fare better in that
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: matchup when I have all the other issues that I
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: have on defense and he he doesn't. UM. But I
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: also thought he shied away from some places the other
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: night on the edges. I thought there was some runs
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: that I don't know. You know, I looked at it
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and I can't lie. I immediately thought this is a
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: guy who's looking at the flock and saying, I'm about
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: thirteen minutes away from free agent. And he wasn't always
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: that way and right as we say it, Yeah, look
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: at that. Look at that. That was perfect. That was
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: like I was just programming for NFL netw you wanted
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: no part of making that tackle? Yeah? And and J. C.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Jackson in the physic was a pretty good guy on
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: the edge. He lowered, take go low whatever, and he
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: was a pretty good open field tackler against the run.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: But did you see that, like he's not even diving nothing. Yeah,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: that was cold. But do you I mean, might make
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: it too much because if I am like that's the
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: first time, like listen, guys going into free agents, I
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: have to say, like I don't want to get hurt
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: in my last game. Talked into my head the other night.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: I think I said it to Hardy. That's a business
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: decision right there, He's going to be a free agent
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: twenty minutes. Yeah, I'm finding it harder and harder to
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: sell myself on how how resigning him makes sense and
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: where the team is right now, where they're headed, and
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: just what he gives you. And you know, I think
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: if if he was a true number one, game changing
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: kind of corner, then I could maybe make the argument.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: But otherwise it just feels like you're trying to hold
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: on to a player who's not going to be here
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: very long, who unless he has like pieces around him,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: kind of like some of these other guys we're talking about,
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: isn't going to be able to just handle all right,
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: just take to take care of that guy. But here's
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: you know, strangely enough, if the Patriots had a lot
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: of cap space, I would say it's easier to say
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: goodbye to J. C. Jackson. But where you have I
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: don't know. If mcguil's right, we got about twenty million.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: You're not going to be able to just do what
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: you did last year, I don't you know, whatever you
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: think about the cat, you're not gonna have to do
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: what you did last year. You're not going to have
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: the money. Yeah right, This is the part that I
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: don't think so, so to me, it makes more because
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: of that makes more sense to just give it to jac.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: Put it all on jac Jackson, you know, and then
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: we'll draft well and we'll fill in other pieces and
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: do what we can this year. Yeah. Um, Like you know,
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: it's kind of weird at how it works that way.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: But like not signing J. C. Jackson isn't going to
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: give you the money to do what you did last
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: year or anyway, right, you know, No, that's true. I
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: mean I think the question would be spreading it around,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: and you know the question would be how many cornerbacks
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: do you need? And also I think just philosophically, do
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: they see this, we gotta get our front seventh straight?
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: Or do they think if hey, if we have three
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: good corners and maybe you know, you bring Jonathan Jones
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: back last year of his deal, maybe he's a restructure
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: that could be an area to open up some space too.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: You know, hey, if we can figure out how to
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: get three man corners again, that our front will look better. Um.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: But you know, like we talked about with the young
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: pieces upfront, can they turn it to those guys? Do
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: they think those guys can even make the play if
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: you had three Stefan Gilmour's on the back end? I
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: don't know. And then what happens when guys get hurt,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: Because they're gonna get hurt. So do you have intelligent
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: enough guys on the you know, backing up that can
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: come in in a pinch and just not screw up.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: See it, and I hear. I hear everything you guys
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: are saying, and I agree with all your points. But
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: I could be sold on it if I thought I
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: was close. I don't think they're close. I said this
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: before the season, sort of was wondering if I was wrong,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: And you know, for a time in the middle of
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: the season, I thought maybe they were getting close. But
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: I don't think they're that close. I don't think that
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: they're built to fight with the big boys yet. Yeah,
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: and if you do that, if you invest seventeen plus
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: million in him, that's a big chunk of your off season,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: and now you're bringing back, at best the same team, Right,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: it's probably gonna be worse than that for all the
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: other reasons that Mike has talked about, with all the
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: other guys that are probably gonna go on defense, so
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: you're probably not going to be as good. And now
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: you have this money tied up. Yeah, So if I
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: thought I was closer than they are, I might be
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: able to do it. I think he's a pretty good player.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: I maintained that all along. I don't think he's worth
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: Stefan Gilmore money like that kind of a contract, like
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: I'm going to give him Jalen Ramsey, I'm gonna give
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: him five for the top of the market, and he's
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: going to be one of the three highest paid corners.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: I don't think he's that player now. The numbers in
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: the accolades suggest he is, so I could you know,
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I could be wrong. I mean, he was a second
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: team All Pro. You know, I definitely have concerns about
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: him post getting post money. I would. I would have
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: concerns about that with virtually anybody. But I think especially
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: an undrafted free agent who's really made all of a
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: sudden going to get paid. He spent four years making nothing. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: and there was a reason why he was an undrafted
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: free agent, you know, because he's not like he didn't
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: have talent college. Yeah, And I mean, you know, to
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: be fair, I think every time we have a press
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: conference with jac it's just I don't know if he's
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: long for here. The way It's like, I love listening
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: to guys say stupid stuff. He makes me uncomfortable at times.
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: I'm like, say that William and Phillham, what's up, William?
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: William and William good job Hardy. Yeah, well, yeah, all right,
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: call back. I guess, Uh, Calvin and Colorado, what's up? Calvin? Hey, Hey,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: how are you guys doing. We're getting there. We're getting there.
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: I hear that first. I just want to stay him
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: first time caller. Um, I did try to email before
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: the season started. This was back in preseason. So I
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: guess my question is geared towards that time. UM. I
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: guess that question would be UM. So I realized that
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: d Anthony Thomas, you know when him and the chief
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: were on the Chiefs, you know, he was a breakout receiver. UM,
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: great hand. He actually was there punded turn and kick
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: return a return man. I was just wondering what would
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: your thoughts be on Do you think that he can
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: be a good acclimation to the Patriots. I feel like
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: he would be able to take the top off easily.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: You know, he has a good footwork as well. I
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: think he would be a great addition the Yeah, not
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: familiar with his work. Yeah, he's just he's a little
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: stat back. I mean he's he's had some Yeah, he's
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: had some success. No, I don't think he's a difference
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: making player, right. I think he's a Niche sort of
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: special team like jack of all trades kind of guy.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: He could play. I mean, he has he has ability,
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: but I don't think no, I don't think he's a
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: difference maker. But I do think you've got that kind
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: of role waiting. You know, I don't know what they're
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: gonna do with Gunner. He's a restricted free agent. We're
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: talking about that. I'd rather have to Anthony Thomas than Gunner,
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: but you know, yeah, I was gonna say that we
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: could replace Gunner with the Anthony Tamas. You know, yeah,
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: that would be a good fit because he is still
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: still currently a free agent. Um he was signed with
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: the Ravens but opted out and still a free agent
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: since then. Ye put him on the list. Thanks Calvin,
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: you spring up Gunner. He was I think he'll he'll
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: be thirty. Gunna was probably my biggest singing miss this year. Yeah,
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: I honestly thought he would contribute in the passing game.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: You're not alone. I'm out there with you. I thought
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: he would be surprised that you well, I mean, I
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: guess it's consistent because you tend to go by what
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: you what the coaches do, just that you know, by
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: right there, let me say this, I'm surprised that you
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: would like just re lance like that you were wrong.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: You've never been proven wrong. No, I have. He he
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: doesn't play, he goes out there, he drops the ball,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: he commits a penalty, and then he take him right.
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: You can just tell they're just like. He hasn't had
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: enough chances for me to say that. Okay, I think
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: like I don't. I don't think he's that good. I
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: think that's me. Yeah, I think he's I think obviously, yes,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: he's on a short leash. But I think the coaches
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: feel every time we put you in has been has
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: it been any better? Every time they put in to
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: kill harry In? But he does he can block, and
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: I know, I know people keep telling me that I
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: haven't seen but on a team that feels like greater
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: of the crackback block when they don't know he's he's
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: better than that. He's better than that. You know so,
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: But I just think that you need to do things.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: Two things, get open and catch the ball. I think
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: Gunner can get open. He's got that quickness in short
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: space where he should be able to get open, but
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: he can't catch. He still scares the crap out of me.
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: Every time he returns his decision making, he puts himself
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: and the ball in harm's way virtually every single return.
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: I hate to admit that's why. And then you know,
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: just like that, I mean, I'm fascinated by the actual
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: mechanism of him because it's he's a restrictive free agent,
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: so I mean you literally have to say first round,
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: second round, or right a first refusal with him, so
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: you know, like yeah, like Jacob is going to get
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: that right. So it's just it's just an interesting way
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: to kind of signal how you feel about a player.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: But I feel like, on the surface, we want our fast,
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: little slot guy in the draft punt returner too, Like
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: like it's just it's right there for the taking that
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: you could get a guy to kind of fill those
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: roles potentially maybe then on both with the restricted free agents,
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: maybe Myers gets a second. I think Myers second, but
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: the other guys that'd be the lowest. I don't know
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: about torres Hall just because he didn't play it all
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: this year. I he's not my radar. Christian Wolkers on
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: the huh they signed him to a future one of
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: a half dozen guys. Um uh? From Chicago right in
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: Prone says, I don't know whether you discuss this topic
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: or not watching Cowboys game, the foolishness of that team
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: with that much talent. In the Coaching Malpractice by Mike McCarthy,
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I found out that the Patriots fans are so lucky
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: to have Bill and Brady together for twenty years and
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: win six championships. They needed each other, and I think
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: Brady bailed out Bill in many games over the years,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: and Bill bailed out Brady too, And we both started
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: their career together relatively and studied from each other and
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: coexisted with each other even with their big egos. I
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: think Mac doesn't have that luxury because I think Bill
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: will stay around for that winning record, and I don't think.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: I don't know what happens after he leaves. But man,
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: they were both special together, Yes they were. Yeah. How
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: many more games does Bill need to get the all
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: time record? It's at least four seasons, right, and you
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: and he has to win like ten games at least
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: every season, doesn't he something like that? Yeah, that's asking
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: a lot. He needs like thirty something game. He might
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: not get it thirty seven. People say he's going to
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: coach until he gets the record. He might not get it. Yeah,
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: time might run out. Why are they going to fire him? Well,
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: I mean if if, if, if it's as bad as
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: we think it is right now, and they don't make Yeah,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: they're not gonna be winning ten games every year, right,
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: so the longer we wait a minute, wait a minute now, see,
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: Like I like to position myself as the most negative guy.
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: But they did just win ten games. Oh, I know, right,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: So you think they're a lock to do that again
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: next year? The exact number ten. No, I don't think
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: that's a lock, but double digits. What I think is
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: a lock is it's not going to be like less
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: than eight. Like, I don't see them bottoming out to
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: like six and eleven. I don't see. I don't see
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: that happening. Wow. I mean, I'm I just want to
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: like I want to paint a picture of the room.
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: I got hit with a bunch of like yeah, yeah,
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: I don't see. I think I got a lot of
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: like hit to resignation phase from Fred that I'm not
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: really you know, I hope you're right, But I think
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: we just went through an hour in forty nine minutes
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: of boy, they need to really make a lot of change, right,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: But I think they need a lot of changes to
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: get to the top. No, but not to stay away
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: from the bottom. Well, and evidently I was right. Sometimes
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: when you make a lot of changes, you have to
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: take a couple of steps backwards to boat. I think
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: that and maybe that's the maybe next year, and let's listen,
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: everyone's like, ah, don't freak out, but it could be
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: a you know, step back, yere taking a step back. Yes,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: but I can't see them going like six and eleven.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: We'll step back step it's like, you know, eight seven eight.
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: But but but the point is what Eric's making is, Yeah,
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: if you win ten games every year, you can do
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: it in three or four years. But if you don't,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: that's gonna write that a little longer. He's gonna be
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: seventy in three months, right, eighty six? Bill out. He
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: needs one win this season to get it fine, right, Yeah,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: it comes out in his walker. He's gonna be like Gordy.
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: How he's gonna be like coming in when he's nine.
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: I'll coach this game. He's in better shape than I
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: and I can tell you that. Well, I think to
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: your point, Fred, that the question might philosophically be, is
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: it can Mac and the offense improve enough to offset
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: the changes that come on defense? And can you keep
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: up the best laid plans this year where hey, veteran
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: defense will bring these guys back. They got championship degree.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: They'll hold the fort while MAC develops and then it'll
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: all meet the didn't work. That defense is done. You
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: gotta get a new You gotta get a new defense,
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: and you gotta get MAC to the next level to
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: be able to, you know, have some kind of marginal
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: error next year and when the other team doesn't poop them.
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: And I know you can't judge the schedule until the
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: end of the season, but right now, aren't they playing
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: the AFC West here? Yeah, they're playing the Raid. They
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: got a real tough away, real tough away s playing
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: the AC the Bills and the NFC North. Yeah, playoff
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: teams Packers, Cardinals, Raiders, Steelers. These are all road games,
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: I mean tough, tough road The only playoff teams coming
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: here are the Bills and the Bengals. But but the
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: road teams, it's the schedule is tough next yeah, So
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: I mean, so you' I'm gonna I'm gonna prepare you
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: for next year. It's gonna be like, what's the problem
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: on the road team? They play well at home, right,
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: but they can't seem to win on the Just prepare yourself. Hey,
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: I'm excited though, Cincinnati here, that'll be That'll be fine
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: next year. That would be fun. M yeah, fun ja
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: yeah fun. Most interesting intersting Patriots fan in the world,
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: James Pedic writes in theoretical question, and I'm glad it's
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: just theoretical, although I'd never do it. What is a Bill?
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: What is Bill's trade value? Would it only be to
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: the Giants? No? I think I think other teams interested Bill.
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: Bill Belichick would never allow and I'm sure it's in
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: his contract that he can't be traded. Yeah, you know,
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: and I know it is theoretical, but I think that
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: if I was a team and the Patriots were willing,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: I'd give up three first round picks for Bill bellis team,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: any team, okay, you're crazy, any team, you're right, any
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: team that's looking for a head coach. Yeah, I'd give
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: up three first round picks for him. But the talented
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: team correct, Like if I have to, like, if I'm Jacksonville, right,
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: so I got to play with the worst roster in football,
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: and you and I gotta I have no first round picks,
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: so I can be I don't know, passable for the
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: next three years, and then he's gonna retire no chance
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: giving up three first round picks. How about the Cowboys?
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: Now that one's that I knew up three first round picks,
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: I'll have a ready made team that I need a
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: coach to stabilize this. Yep, sign me up for that one.
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: But I set that wouldn't be interested in giving up
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: three first round picks right a head coach seventy I think,
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: I think to stabilize my organization, and maybe there's the
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: maybe there's the contingent of the deal that you're gonna
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: help me find the next guy after you, like you're
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: coming in, You're gonna stabilize, You're gonna set the culture,
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: you're gonna set the process, you know in the systems,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: and then you'll move on and help me right for
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: the next phase. Like maybe Steve comes with you, he
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: takes over his head. But but I also think I
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: also think that I don't. I don't feel there's very
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: many scenarios that Bill would want to go to because
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: I think he's got it really good here. Yeah, I
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: know Robert and Jonathan you know, And he said this
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: many times, and he just said it on set, I
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: think on Sunday. You know the structure here that I
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: get from Robert and Jonathan Craft and they give us
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: whatever we need to field a competitive team. I'm paraphrasing,
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: but that was the message that he's sending. He has
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: total control of everything. You don't just snap your fingers
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: and get total control of everything anyway you go. Now,
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: maybe Dallas, maybe Jerry Jones would say, I know, but
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: maybe he would say for him, for him, yeah, I'll
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: acquies just like he did for Post. He wouldn't be
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: able to help himself as soon as they start awaiting
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: its term down there in the locker room giving his
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: GM postgame press cut. But it's a short term thing,
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: like I only need him to come in and get
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: me back to the super Bowl. Yeah, and then I
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: could I can meddle again right with my with my
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: whole host. I I remember that game in Dallas. We
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: beat them, and that's back when I was covering the
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: team and I was in the locker room after the
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: game and there's Jerry in the middle of the locker
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: Jerry speak, I believe after everything, I'm like, this is
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: this is ridiculous. Yeah, he doesn't every game. Yeah, well,
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: press conference, Yeah, another call. Nathan's in California. What's up, Nathan. Hey, guys, Hey,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: I was gonna talk about the coaching, but after that
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: win lost talk, I'll bring that up. I used, So
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: we've worked on the season. Right before the seven game
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: win streets, look look like crap. After the seven game
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: win street, we look like crap. Um. You know, if
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: we don't win those seven games, but those games don't
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: go away, you know, not as Windy and Buffalo or uh,
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: you know Clevelands actually healthy. Um, Tennessee's healthy. Our season
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: looks completely different. You know, we're not looking at Herbert
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: doesn't throw a pick six in the fourth quarters. Yeah,
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: that's true. But I also think there was some close
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: losses Chat. I think theoretically even here, no, like, I
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: don't think there were games that the Patriots should have won.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: So I'm not trying to say ad wins, but I'm saying, theoretically,
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: next year, with some more experience and a quarterback that's
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: been through it a little bit, maybe you find a
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: way to get over the hump and one or two
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: of those close games. Yeah, that's that's what you're hoping
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: for for next year. Yeah, and it's and it's like
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: it's less than thirty games that he needs, Like, I think,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: do you think it's less than thirty? I thought it
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: was like at some point three forty seven, right, that's right.
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: I thought gotta be like three twenty years. I thought
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: at some point this season it was at thirty eight.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: But I could be wrong. So they won ten. No, no, no,
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: that's the season. It was thirty. I think he's I
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: think he's inside the thirty games. I mean, I don't
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: know exactly. Then it's only three years at the most.
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: It was a way we could look at it. Now
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: I don't get him like now he needs thirty he
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: needs thirty wins. Well, now it's three years at the most.
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: Well you just said there was no way he's gonna
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: be winning ten games. Why is it? Thirstead it's inside
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: at thirty. So if you get seven, you know it.
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: That's twenty one. So how far inside of thirty are you?
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. Be in a fifth season,
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: I would say twenty seven or twenty eight wins he
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: probably needs somewhere in that. Yeah. Of course, not knowing
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: the numbers, any of the numbers correctly, right, I don't
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: know them off the top of my head. But I
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: know he's I know he's over three. I know he's
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: over three. I think he's over three twenty. I think
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: he's like, we need to get the numbers so that
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: we can talk. You have the media, so we can
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: talk intelligently. Can you look at the melayoffs? That's right,
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: Mooding playoffs right now. Okay, so that's twenty six games
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: to tie, twenty seven nine wins a season for three years.
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: So now that's three. That's doable. Okayin off nine, I
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: feel good. Yeah, because you can have we can have
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: one ten, you can have one eight, So you can
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: take a step fash right, you can still take that
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: step back. I think it will probably be um in
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: in three, you know, maybe more likely four, but it
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: should be in that that neighborhood. Yeah. But I remember
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: having this talk with with Felger in the seven game
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: winning streak, and he goes, so you don't you don't
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: think they're back? I go, well, what do you mean back?
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: I go? I go. Can I see who's on the
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: team next year? Before I just start? He goes where
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: you win? He goes, you get, He goes, you're with
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: the last four games this year, and then let's not
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: even not even count so that's thirteen, right. He goes,
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: spend thirteen next year, thirteen year old? Two years he goes,
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: not even counting playoffs. And I'm like, before I just
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: start racking up thirteen win seasons? Can I see who's
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: on the team right? Oh? You know, so you don't
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: think they're back? And they went one in five after
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: and that process for next year starts. Now. We'll be
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: back Thursday. Um a John Rook show tomorrow tomorrow at two,
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: his last of the season. I just want to apologize.
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: I won't be here on Thursday. I have have to
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: go see a doctor jellyfinger. Oh so that sounds so
