- 0:11[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome on in.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_02]: It is that time of week here on a Wednesday the CSI podcast coming at you I ride chat and join as always by the squad we stuck Brady back to his bunker.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_02]: So he will not be surfacing the next approximately 75 minutes.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_02]: We do have the band with the legend or fearless leader who just figured out notifications on his back look at kidding.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_02]: been fine and then it decides to as the technology does and wakes up one day and there's no you get notifications today.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_02]: John Hoover up in the 908 boom how you be.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_03]: Good.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_03]: I'm trying to figure out a way to get to Vegas sometime in April.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_03]: I hear there's an event going on.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_03]: So trying to work my way to the city.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_02]: That is the premier postseason tournament, the college basketball crown.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_02]: Got to be in Carson Field with us as well, Carson.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_02]: I hope that the golf happening Sunday and Monday were not on the calendar because I don't think that you were able to get out there and get much done.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: No, they were.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: I immediately stashed a bunch of monsters thinking I might have to make a drive to Dayton.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Sooners didn't make that happen, but doing well, the man this is here in my opinion best week in the year.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: So excited to be pardoned.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: we'll get a more first four action tonight and we'll get into the full thing tomorrow but as we said April 1st is what we're actually coming down for.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_02]: We've also got the man Ryan, we'll actually the madness is here.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, Abraham, I'm going to be at the Louis Noble Center all week and long.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's the sooner women are getting after it here in Norman.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan will you be in Oklahoma City just hoping to get a glimpse of the mythical Kelvin Sampson to reminisce about when all you've asked won't matter.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I'm actually more looking forward to getting to catch up with my old pal Brut prior who is going to be in town to cover the Oklahoma City Regional for ESPN and who brought this up, so just thinking about it.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_04]: The last time I was in Vegas, I actually was sitting in a hotel lobby with John Hoover talking to Patrick Fields and Antibob Stoops at various times.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_03]: That was a good trip, but I think we surprised him, don't you?
- 2:20[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, just a little bit, I don't know.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know for the way it's supposed to be a 15 or 20 minute media interview, and me and Abraham are still sitting with him there like 40 minutes later.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's pretty awesome.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_04]: But he was great during that time.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_04]: It was an interesting trip and got to see the Vegas Golden Knights during that trip as well.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_04]: So, good times.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: As you know, my, my biggest golden nights that are near and dear to my heart as I, uh, don't think I could name a single player.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_02]: What's more country flu is not there anymore.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's neither here nor there.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get into all of that.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_02]: Let's do a little bit of shifting and moving and changing.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_02]: Typically, we're football from the top and I promise this will be football adjacent.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get to the football.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_02]: There's plenty of football preview and springball all that, but kind of the big news in the last couple of days around.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma, sorry my dog just opened the pantry door and I was very distracted.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_02]: The big news of the weekend across Oklahoma is the sooner on the men's side, the women foreseed hosting Idaho Michigan State Colorado State.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: We'll dive into that here in a little bit, but the men did not make the NCAA tournament which then met the Oklahoma Athletic Director Roger Dini,
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: had to make his first big call in Norman and there was no waffling, no, oh, do we have to weigh?
- 3:35[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, we get to Monday or Tuesday and there's nothing, so I assume important.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: No, Rodgini filters out, talks to ESPN, talks to a couple local reporters and then himself from his own ex-account declares to the world that Porter Moser.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_02]: is returning.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_02]: He also basically says that Porter Moser under resource.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: He's over a cheat.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: His job is to overachieve with the resources.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's Oklahoma's job to provide the resources to put him on the level that he can achieve big things.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: Gentlemen, let's just go around the horn.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: First, of course, I know that you were our boots on the ground.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_02]: You and Brady doing a lot of the men's basketball coverage, a rally at the end of the year for sure, but for the third time in five years, simply on the first team out or second team out graphic.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_02]: Some people.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: would say that that is not warrant being brought back, is that is underachieving Oklahoma standards, but Rogerty talked about three sources.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: Let's say you, what were you standing on the great Porter-Moser drama of 2026?
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think there are some mixed feelings on my end.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think he deserves credit for how the year ended, beating off a bunch of teams that did make the NCAA tournament in a row, at least getting an argument out there, because I know that January, early February, we thought there was no chance of there being a selection Sunday drama.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, I think he deserves credit in the sense that he kept the locker room together.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: They never stopped fighting.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, leadership wise, you look at certain things, like, okay, that's really solid.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: then you look you can't erase the nine game losing streak that you have to look back in it yes they lost us and really good teams in that stretch yes they lost some per breakers but they also lost a Mississippi state in South Carolina they lost a non-con game against Arizona state i mean
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: with all the good that happened in the end of the year, there's no erasing the not so good that happened early on.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: I see what Roger Denny is saying about, yes, this team is under under resource, they can't compete with, say, the Florida, Kentucky, some of those schools in terms of re-sourcing, but I think it's got to be a shortly-ish if this is the thing.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't hate the decision, maybe give him
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: million dollar buyout, give them another year, give them some more resources, and if you still can't succeed, okay, then it might be time to pull the trigger.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: If he does succeed, great, you look like you've just made a great decision in retrospect a year prior.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it's going to be interesting just to see what goes into the new resourceing, what they're able to bring in to Norman to make this, not a bubble team, not just fringe getting in, a competitive basketball team once again.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: ABER, we saw, I don't want to draw a perfect parallel to Brent Vinnables because Brent Vinnables had put up a 10-win season, which is something that Portermozer has not done the basketball equivalent to a Edochal home at least obviously, but we kind of saw a so much situation, Brent Vinnables had to fire south of the trail, he kind of got a, I don't want to say a total blank check, but Edochal home was aggressive and going out and hiring who Brent Vinnables believed was a top and line offensive coordinator.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_02]: certainly bring it in john material wasn't cheap uh... the front office of the home is kind of invested in uh... that was a little bit after obviously the winter portal but welcome a football was a hey we're gonna try to resources thing up to give britman was kind of a no excuse situation obviously that worked out great good vibes kumbaya Norman will talk about that energy entering spring ball is this like a fair parallel to draw that
- 7:09[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma is kind of given Porter Moser a brick-finnable sess, you know, do or die type situation with the caveat being like what's waiting to see what the resources are because again, I don't expect Oklahoma to suddenly go out and do like a geometry or bin or buckled style spin for basketball, but they're just trying to get into the top 68
- 7:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they're not going to, you know, be Kentucky all the sudden and pay, you know, those kind of salaries for their roster, but there's no doubt that this program has been under resource.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, a big part of that is that just the support, the appetite for feeding men's basketball, so much of it gets redirected into not only football, which is, you know,
- 7:54[SPEAKER_04]: You've got softball taken up a good chunk.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_04]: You've got obviously women's basketball with a lot of success.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously they had to leverage those resources to go out and get a Leia Chavez last year.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_04]: You've got women's gymnastics and some of those other programs that sort of eat some of that stuff up with it.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_04]: in a lot of places gets funneled toward men's basketball and you've got a fan base that's really changing and fickle to some extent that makes it difficult, I mean just the landscape of college basketball in particular.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_04]: has changed dramatically.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_04]: You can't win the same way that long-crewer did just a few years ago at Oklahoma, much less Kelvin Samson and beyond that.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, heck, just think about how much that those Billy Tubbs' rosters would cost right now with mooky playlock and Stacy
- 8:53[SPEAKER_04]: So I think it's a good idea for Roger Danny to catch his breath, don't make a crazy rash decision and impulse decision that is defensible for sure in firing Porter Moser, but take some time try to get the resources short up a little bit and put it
- 9:17[SPEAKER_04]: whoever it is, whether it's Porter Moser, turning things around or the next coach in a much better position to be successful because I think unless you had a guy in mind who is a no doubt, this is the guy we wanna go get.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_04]: especially with the job market the way it is this year in college basketball.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_04]: I just don't think it makes sense to just pull the trigger just to pull it.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_04]: You've got to be deliberate there and I think you know there's many things to be said about Roger Denys approach and this one, but I think ultimately it was the right call.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: If, uh, look, he likes on the roster.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_02]: You could maybe try to fundraise from Pearl Jam.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, John, uh, I come to you last just because I know that athletics has changed so much, especially Cleafest Athletics, but as the old man here, I'm kidding.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_02]: You've, uh, been on the, uh, you beat the longest of all, so you've seen the iterations from Samson to Cable, Cable to Lawn, as far as the basketball side goes.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: You've seen, uh, everything that, uh, rise and fall of something like Cherry Colt, who was excellent for such a long time and then as Kim Wokey would say, some people kind of lost it and couldn't ever get it back.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to get to Kim Mokie today, but here we go.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_02]: John, as you look at it, you're looking at a young, fresh new athletic doctor, not younger, hip or cooler, they're not playing on an LED course that they had to bail out of halfway through.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_02]: But you look at Roger, Denny, and go, what's say you, how did you make his, the whole thing, decision process, the decision he got to for his first big call in Norma?
- 10:42[SPEAKER_03]: I thought it was an easy call for Roger Denny to not come in and say this is my guy I'm keeping him and to not come in and say sorry Porter Moser's got to go.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_03]: He hasn't been here long enough to make that call.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_03]: We've talked all since last summer about this decision may be looming Porter Moser comes off his first and only so far in CA turn of it can he follow that up.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah, you followed it up with a first out again for the second or third time.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_03]: So, now Roger Denny comes in and looks, takes a step back and looks at the scope of the college of the sooner's basketball program.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we, again, we talked since last summer, I'll do respect Joe Kostiglan was kind of kicked men's basketball down the road, kicked the can down the road a little bit, deal with it later, deal with it later, deal with it later, let's get through this part of football, let's get, you know, build, give rentables the, the resources he needs.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_03]: at some point jokes to ground decides to retire, that can is still sitting there down the road.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_03]: That's Porter Moser, right in to be the picked up or kicked down the road, so Roger Denny's answer was having to pick this up, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_03]: Stand behind it.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to support it and I'm going to make this statement that we need to allocate more resources to men's basketball.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_03]: It's like you said a couple of weeks ago, Ryan.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_03]: He's a basketball guy.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_03]: He comes from Illinois, he's from North Carolina.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_03]: He knows what good college basketball looks like.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: and even in this new era of N.I.L.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_03]: and building your roster one year at a time with transfers.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_03]: I think he knows and respects the sport of basketball and appreciates it enough that he's that what we're seeing right now for all you basketball is not good enough because they only time they did get in the tournament they had a lottery pick as a freshman and he got him he got him over the hump so
- 12:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, if you can get more lottery picks or if you can get lottery picks to transfer in somehow as in cash, then that's where all you basketball needs to be.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: As you can say, if only they could have had the number seven overall pick those kind of resources right and a guy elsewhere on that team that before he was the killies out was maybe not like bona fide second round type guy but a guy that you're talking about hey could he's taken if only you could assemble the resources to give Porter Moser that surely he would finish better than six and twelve in conference play right but that's the resources you want let's also remember that that lottery pick.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_04]: They got lucky in a lot of ways.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_04]: That's what he has in the nation.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_02]: Correct.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_04]: And things like that that led him to Oklahoma, otherwise he might never have come here.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_02]: So they found the mythical pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, right?
- 13:34[SPEAKER_02]: Everything had to come together for Roger Denny, his Illinois fighting line at the time to not have a roster spot, right?
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: Like surely those resources that Roger Denny speaks of,
- 13:46[SPEAKER_02]: to get uh... i mean can you imagine how much the number seven overall pick would cost and and and i.l.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: and and what that surely if you just could give quarter-mose or that kind of player he's not gonna go and bear us the university every single time out right oh no he finished six and twelve an SEC plan and didn't win his turn again
- 14:05[SPEAKER_02]: got it got you i i understand the can it pulls not great year tell me you couldn't find someone that's better than uh he's 44% in conference play for his career 55% for his career overall i look more at the conference play because i think everyone understands that at some of the spots he's having to play a lot of buy games it's gonna hurt the overall record i think that's totally fair
- 14:25[SPEAKER_02]: A guy that the only success he's ever had in college basketball he needed seven years to build it.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_02]: We know that that's a reality of today, right?
- 14:32[SPEAKER_02]: That that is something that you can do in today's college basketball's build and build and build.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_02]: And then you missed the tournament the very next year after that I believe you were able to build off that Final Four.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_02]: You didn't make it to a sweet 16.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_02]: Kevin Keats went to a Final Four recently.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_02]: Is anyone breaking down the door for him?
- 14:46[SPEAKER_02]: Does that make him a good coach?
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: Just because he made the Final Four.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_02]: No one's gonna deny that they need resources.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_02]: Porter had a lottery pick a year ago and he needed an awful bubble and a rally at the end of the season to make it to the tournament and lose that.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_02]: Like what are we talking about?
- 15:04[SPEAKER_02]: More read.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: They need more resources, obviously.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I do think if you maybe you're out you didn't, you can't say this.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_02]: The financial reality of, you have to buy out Porter Moser, you don't have to buy out your staff.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_02]: they need to pay another buyout next for the new coach to come in and buy out their staff.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_02]: Then if it's not a proven guy you're probably going to have to overpay in the transfer portal to bring it like I understand the fiscal realities of that.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: Porter Moses job is safe not because he's a good basketball coach because that's an expensive undertaking for a program that just came out of not getting to take a buyout or a cut excuse me of the TV revenue from the SEC.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_02]: This next fiscal year the one that we're currently in they're going to.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: Let's not pretend like this is because
- 15:44[SPEAKER_02]: He had, whether it was resourced or not, the ins of it, you had a number of seven or overall pig.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: He's not going to get those kind of resources and he's stuck with that guy.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: I don't understand.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_03]: I'll have this, Ryan, enough to cut you off, but I'll have this, just the timing of Roger Danny's higher could have been better.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_03]: for Oklahoma to move on from Porter Moser if they had been able to get him in the fall before the season started, allow him to see the full scope of here what our basketball team can do over the course of the season.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_03]: I think he probably would have made a move.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think he probably would have said, Porter, sorry buddy, we've got to move on.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_03]: And I think they would have negotiated
- 16:23[SPEAKER_03]: And navigate it how to get around those buyouts, but you're 100% right.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_03]: The fans, you know, you basketball fans are the ones now being asked to put the bill.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, we need more resources.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: We need better players.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_03]: We need coaches with big, you know, big salaries and coaching staff that we can, you know, give them a big buyout as well.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_03]: Who's paying for all that?
- 16:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's all you fans.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_03]: They're asking for more NIL.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: They're asking for more donations.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_03]: And OU basketball fans are fed the hell up with Porter Moser's basketball with his style, his coaching, his record, all that stuff that you laid out.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_03]: Very few OU basketball fans wanted re-up for 2026-27.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_02]: I just don't, um, I don't think you get a cookie for rallying at the end of the year when you were one game away from setting the school record or tying the school record for the longest losing streak.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, and I think that again, when you talk about like the best aside of it, uh, take everything else out of it.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: Everything we just talked about.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think that makes sense.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: The, uh, you look at a place like Syracuse, which, um, at one point was known for basketball, I thought,
- 17:26[SPEAKER_02]: They just got turned down, you know, a coaches decide to be staying at South Florida or Providence.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like I think that coaches now too are looking at, hey, what realistically what is your budget?
- 17:37[SPEAKER_02]: The Providence Athletic Budget, not going to be as big as the Syracuse Athletic Budget, but Syracuse is trying in football, right?
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: And so that that takes it away.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a really interesting time at Oklahoma when it's like a Carson road about what we'll get to Roger and he's greater statements at large.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: When you haven't, you didn't get that revenue cut just because it was the biodecrement essentially with the big 12 all that stuff.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think I really would love to know if everything was advanced one year as far as Oklahoma the SEC and you're getting your full SEC distribution.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: if that's easier or is this almost a trial year for Roger Denny?
- 18:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Portermore's you come back and if he does well, then great awesome that you don't have to pay a buy out.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: But this almost feels like to me a test run for Roger Denny is if you can resource Porter and the season ends, which I would like to project right now that they're going to be the first team out of the 2027 NCAA tournament.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: I'd like that to be locked in.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: If that is what occurs, this is what Roger Denny can go to his next
- 18:34[SPEAKER_02]: pool of candidates next off season say I was able to drum this up in year one for Porter and I was didn't go well, but this is what I the admin, the administrator of the athletic director was able to do there because Carson, you're going to need to to make a pitch whether it's this year next year, two years from that, whatever.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_02]: A Porter Moser is hasn't successfully your next year.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to have to make sure you've fined off other schools, things like that.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_02]: If they see that he finally gets really sourced and
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: actually wins games in that time.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of those things that this is as much a try out for Roger Denny and Oklahoma like the basketball apparatus, for new people, or keeping Porter as it is, for Porter himself to save his job in the 2026-27 season.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about his basketball background coming from a school like Illinois being a North Carolina fan growing up.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, his aspirations were lofty.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: He said it's a reasonable expectation for owe you to be middle of the pack in the SEC as far as resourcing.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: But he also said that's never going to be the final aspiration.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: He has lofty goals, he, I mean, you look at where Illinois was prior to him.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: Some of the coaches underwood coming in there.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: That was kind of a dormant program for a little bit since that run.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: They had in the 2000s to the national title game.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: They've gotten a lot better.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, he's seen firsthand how quickly things can go to just kind of mediocre to, okay, that's a perennial top 15, top 20 team.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it's good that he is as ambitious as he is, I think that also means that kind of going back to what I said.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: The leash has to be sure you have to see definite progress.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: You can't flirt with the bubble again if you're a porter-moser and expect to keep your job, but it is going to be interesting to just see how this unfolds, what the re-sourcing looks like,
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: what the uncurious about the portal, cause obviously no Nigel Pack, no Mohammed would be a lot of the guys leaving the Daryon Rida's eligibility, Xavier Brown, his dad is on the coaching staff, step down, I think it is.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd expect him to come back same with Dayton Forsyth, but if they could retain a lot of the pieces, get some good transfers in, and obviously,
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: delve out a decent amount of money to get some good transfers in.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: This could be a competitive basketball team, but a lot of it does come down to coaching, and I think it is going to be equally a big try out for Porter Moser as it is Roger Denny early on, and then into his career at OU.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: as Roger Denny said in that interview with Dari Noka that he did that he's also not gonna this is not gonna be I'm paraphrasing not gonna be cut off one hand at the sake of uh... you know that the feed or whatever he doesn't want to hey local home of basketball
- 21:15[SPEAKER_02]: gets this piece of the pie, which means that other deserving programs don't get their slice.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think part of that's going to be again, Oklahoma kind of on a shoestring budget this year.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: A budget that everyone knew about when they knew that they were going to leave the big 12-1 year early.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_02]: In the end, it's like we did the stories all at the time, able at a different place, a great place, a different place.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: It was one of those things, it's going to be a short-term cut, and in the long-term you look over a five-year thing, you're going to end up making more money by the time you get to 2030 by doing this, but it just sucks for this specific last year and this year.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be very, very interesting to see Jeff Broncos, a guy as well, that I know that they had said, not going to go through senior day trying to get that year of eligibility for the community college stuff, but
- 21:57[SPEAKER_02]: It'll be interesting, because I think that I wouldn't begrudge anyone to look around and go, maybe this is the wrong day to say this, because of the midweek happening last night.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: But OE baseball comes out, has a really nice opening SEC series win, two through every A&M right now, a top 10 program and D1 baseball.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_02]: They've got so much happening over at Kimory Family, say it's like, well, why are we going to resource Porter when Skip is winning?
- 22:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like he's winning on the shoestring budget.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_02]: Why not give him a bigger budget and see how far you can blow that out.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_02]: Roger did he's like, it's not an if and or we can do all of it and it Oklahoma you're supposed to do all of it.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, that's one of the things that Roger did any said that is an introductory was that, uh, hey, their their goal was to get.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_04]: the programs that weren't at a championship level to a championship level, the programs that were at a championship level pointing out softball women's gymnastics and some of the others to widen that gap.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it's not just hey, we're going to take from this pot to put into this one and change the balance up of stuff because you can't really do that.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_04]: Now there is a finite
- 23:07[SPEAKER_04]: but you've got to find ways to manage it and to go out and create some additional streams of revenue.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_04]: It is going to be interesting to see how they do that.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_04]: OU is one of the few very few self-sustaining athletic departments in the country.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_04]: They've actually went sort of into the deficit this year as we wrote about a few weeks ago.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be interesting to see if that, uh,
- 23:40[SPEAKER_04]: that reality is going to be able to be sustainable moving forward.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_04]: And that's something that Joke Stigleon was really proud about continuing that.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_04]: But at some point, do you have to take some resources from the university, whether it's in student athletic fees, which most schools have, or something to that effect, to keep this thing going and make all of the sports
- 24:09[SPEAKER_04]: not just football.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's a good idea.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_03]: A good point.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_03]: Pride goes before the fall on stuff like that.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_03]: We, you know, Joe's always been this kind of high-brow approach.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_03]: Athletics at Oklahoma.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_03]: We take care of our own business.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_03]: We give back to the university.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: I think they've delivered over $7 million in a year to the general university fund from athletics.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_03]: Those days may be going.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_03]: You may have to bite the bullet, I guess.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_03]: And take the hit and say, hey,
- 24:38[SPEAKER_03]: president day we're going to need some cash over here in athletics if we're going to if we're going to have this program that has succeeded like this.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I don't I don't think there's any doubt about it that that soon that's got to go away if they want to be the kind of athletic department that they aspire to be.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's exactly the same in it.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_04]: There's no shame in, you know, I mean, there's a reason why there's only a, yeah, I think it was seven schools at the time.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_04]: How do you relate to that now?
- 25:10[SPEAKER_04]: Now.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_03]: Alabama, I mean, you know, throughout the SEC floor to all these schools contribute to the athletic department.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_03]: And the students are all okay with it.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_03]: And Roman hasn't gone down at those schools because of because it's a little more expensive.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, get off your high horse and start asking for other monies.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_02]: What Nick Sabin talks about this a ton when the time to get to ask about like how do you justify your salary as a coach know that he's like we'll look at Alabama's enrollment Before I took over and then Whether you like it or not when when people are looking at the student life part of a university.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's why Joe Harris Joe here's junior always talks about
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: through the many border regions meetings that we sit through which are great, I assume.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_02]: You sit there, he's like one of the key pillars of Oklahoma is the community, the experience and athletics is a part of that, which is why whatever he happens to be talking about that day recently, it was like, I think it was the football stadium upgrade stuff like that.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's where we recently saw that.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 26:09[SPEAKER_02]: Well, see, one of the things I do feel for Porter, I don't feel for much, because he's shown.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_02]: Like you look at it, I would say losing the Arkansas, not having a dare say cup, is a resource loss.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_02]: I would say losing to terrible teams, like South Carolina and Mississippi State, is that your coach is bad.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_02]: And you shouldn't be doing that.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_02]: I would say not being able to foul up three is that your coach is a moron.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: Look at the Missouri game.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, so you're not, you're not asking to go out there and beat Arkansas.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's all the other ones, but they did have the big push this past off season.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_02]: We need to invest why they didn't invest more.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_02]: And actually went down in investment.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: They went from I think 14th or 13th in the league to 15th with more of an investment.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_02]: So that's going to be a challenge for Dini to simply saying more money does not equal.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_02]: Improvement and resourcing you have to improve it at the levels that everyone else around you is improving and and maybe one way This is not going to get everything but a little teensy bit a start of that could be saying no to the NIT I think where you have to host you are paying your event staff and all that stuff to staff it and saying
- 27:14[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, we got this college basketball crown in year or two of its existence that went down from 16 teams to eight teams kind of something that fox has drummed up to maybe add some TV inventory we're going to bring that back and it's not real time at time, but inventory inventory bring that into April and
- 27:30[SPEAKER_02]: You've seen $300,000 in the NIL pot to the winner, $100,000 to the runner-up, $50,000 to the semi-finalist.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_02]: So if you simply win, I'll gain against a bad call, Rado team.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_02]: You can get $50,000, not gonna buy you a front line center or anything like that, but that's $300 less $1,000 you can go out there and win this thing.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe in the mythical old age of college basketball, you're building stuff.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_02]: You can look like in Nebraska and go, hey, they won the crown and then ripped off.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_02]: It was at 20 or 22 straight to start this year Carson.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_02]: I think that if you're not gonna play in the NCAA tournament, if you can get the call from the crown, I think this is a no brainer to play in the crown over the NIT.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: No, I totally agree.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of those things that when the NIT field was unveiled, we don't see Oklahoma in there.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of like, okay, don't love that.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think there is something to build on with how they looked late in the season.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: Get some more minutes to guys like Kai Rogers, Kuala Talk.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: So at first I was a little confused why they wouldn't.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: Then you see the crown feel that it's a cash prize if you win it 500 grand.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: All against power teams in this tournament, you've got to like that.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's one opportunity to play in Vegas, somewhere that's not the way Noble Center, somewhere you don't have to worry about mid game fires.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot to like about playing in this tournament, even though it's not.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: The end goal should never be the end goal to miss the tournament, playing kind of a silly tournament in Las Vegas, but I like the fact that they're playing postseason basketball.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: I hate when teams kind of get on their high horse of where to good to play in anything that's not the tournament.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously tournament should and is the goal for OU every other major program.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: But getting some more experience, like I said, some of those younger guys.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_00]: See if guys like Kuala Tak, he still has a good role with this team.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: If you can do anything on the defensive end, I think there's a lot they can learn about what they need in the portal.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: And if they win a couple of games, get some money, I think.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's way more good than bad.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the NIT these days, if the crown is not an option, I still think it's a good thing to play in, but there's a lot of just, it's hard to win in that because if you beat a team like David Sim for example, like Oklahoma State did, Big Whop, you beat David Sim.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: If you lose the Davidson, you get clowned, you don't take home any money.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: You just don't see as much value.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: I think getting one more road trip playing against while you said, and I agree, a not very good colorado team, then Baylor, Minnesota, whoever it is.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's still probably higher competition than a lot of these South Alabama, Davidson, Steven F. Austin that you would play in the NIT.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_02]: And it's the premiere postseason tournament.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what do we talk about the crap season 4 electric great stuff net for this is a different crown of my That you got that going so it could be a big 12 reunion tour.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_02]: You could get bailer in the semifinals with Virginia in a championship game That's what I filled out my crown bracket.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what you guys had, but
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: uh... we will see fed you are not fed we're a good integration April for her seven p.m. fs one be there or dot i mean that really better uh... maybe just maybe they can get these resources to get a guy like jara might appear and if you just have jara might appear is walk through that door a top ten pick
- 30:43[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, it went some basketballs.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_03]: Jeremiah, with Jeremiah fears last year, have rather played in the NCAA tournament and taken that L in the first round, or gone to Vegas for a week and got up to, you know, they win one game.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's $3,300 per player.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_03]: If you win one game, you win two games, it's $6,600, you win three games, you pocket $20,000 if you're a player.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_03]: You know how hard those guys are going to be playing?
- 31:15[SPEAKER_03]: You know how competitive those games are going to be, that's going to be insane.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_03]: Money's on the line.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_03]: This is exactly what college basketball and college sports.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_03]: This is what I've been saying for years, guys, that the bold games need to do.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_03]: Oh no, Christian McCaffrey opted out of the bold game, nobody's going to watch.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, Christian McCaffrey.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_03]: We're the whatever bowl, orange bowl, whatever, we're going to give you five grand if you come and play.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_03]: Hell yeah!
- 31:39[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome and play.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_03]: I could put off the the combine training for later.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to go play another football game.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_03]: They're playing me five grand.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_03]: Bowl games that needed to do this and then see a tournament and see a tournament's in no danger.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_03]: But the NIT is dead.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_03]: Elm worked out.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_03]: And the reason why I didn't know this.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_03]: I started looking this up.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_03]: I just you just assume that the NIT pays teams a bunch of money to come and play in their tournament.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_03]: No, the the NIT takes care of expenses if you're traveling.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_03]: And then you get about, it increases a little bit each year.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_03]: You get about $4,000 per team, $4,000 per team.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_03]: Here's 15 players splitting $4,000.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_03]: Oh wait, no, I'm sorry, that money goes to the school and the school decides how it's paid out.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_03]: They can put it in their NIO fund or they can go pay their history professor.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's insane how the NIT has just let itself slide while everybody else is shooting past it.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_03]: All these crazy tournaments that have been in lieu of the NIT, which is the oldest, most prestigious original college basketball tournament.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_03]: You've had the CBI, the CAB, I think was one, CIT.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_03]: The CIT, the RBI, the BLT,
- 32:56[SPEAKER_03]: Now we got this thing, we got this thing called the crown, and they're actually saying, hey, players, if you come play in our tournament, we'll play you this time.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_03]: If you come play in our tournament and win, you get to hang out in Vegas, and you get a bunch of cash at the end, that's winning in Vegas, that's winning.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: Who would say that on that?
- 33:13[SPEAKER_04]: And you can do it all in a span of time where Vegas doesn't get old.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_04]: You do it in four days.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_04]: The whole thing, the whole tournament, four days long,
- 33:23[SPEAKER_04]: I think there's no doubt that this is a better option than the NIT, and I grew up enjoying the NIT, and watching the semi-finals and finals at Madison Square Garden on television.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_04]: And they don't even offer that anymore.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_04]: They've taken that away.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_04]: Exactly, and it's a shame, but again, the NIT now is run by the NCAA who we know what they're
- 33:50[SPEAKER_04]: track record is with the running things.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_04]: Not great, so it should be no surprise, but I like the format.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_04]: I like Oklahoma opting for this rather than the NIT in my mind on several levels that we've talked about here over the last few minutes.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_04]: It's just a no-brainer.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_03]: And we assumed on Sunday, guys, that we wrote the story.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_03]: The seasons over, I put a tweet out Sunday night.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_03]: Well, that's it for the sooner season, everybody's like, ah,
- 34:18[SPEAKER_03]: The crown started last year when OU went to the NCAA for the first time and everybody was so excited about the NCAA for the first time.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_03]: We didn't even know what the hell the crown was.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_03]: So it took us a year.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_03]: What's the crown?
- 34:30[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to crown stupid tournament in Las Vegas.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_03]: What the hell is that?
- 34:33[SPEAKER_03]: Wait a minute.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_03]: They're paying the players.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_03]: 300 grand?
- 34:35[SPEAKER_03]: What?
- 34:36[SPEAKER_04]: Well, in Nebraska won it last year and look what Nebraska is doing this year.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_04]: Not that.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_04]: That's going to be, you know, an every year thing, but certainly,
- 34:45[SPEAKER_04]: You know, the D&IL money, the money that they're playing directly to players helps.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_02]: And free content idea, if, Oklahoma wins, get your best video crew.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_02]: Roger Dini goes from T-Mobile Arena, walks over to Caesar's Palace.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_02]: asks where the roulette table is, sets 300 grand down on red.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_02]: If you win, you have 600, you got your eighth guy in the rotation.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_02]: Boom, you do it again.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_02]: You might have a math center to replace Mowaggies.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_02]: Look, it's as easy as that.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_04]: And if you think you might have a gambling problem, call 1-800.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_02]: This is my suggestion for Roger Dining because otherwise I'd like to cry on the stuff on my fridge What's happening?
- 35:34[SPEAKER_02]: So we will I won't be too into the April 1st because this is silly, but the crowd the premiere But it's the only basketball tournament I want to be in Obviously as that they would like to pay me the thirty-three hundred dollars whenever I will take that
- 35:47[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's get on to other things.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_02]: We'll regroup with basketball here in a couple of weeks when they, it means basketball at least.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_02]: We get to go ahead and start to make it kind of second.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_02]: Got to slide it and we're contractually out of the game.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_02]: We do cover Oklahoma.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_02]: So Springball is kicking off next week, boys.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: And we drew straws and buy drew straws.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: I said I'm just going to go in order of what I usually do because I don't want to think that hard.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: Springball getting going.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to take the easy one off the board John next week.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_02]: I can't wait for every little bit, every little nugget of actual practice we get to see, which is a little bit more than the spring that it is during the fall, mainly because of pro day.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, the thing that I actually took away, we can get to own hiding key here in a second, but the thing I actually took away is, uh, Jon Mets here have the ball a little bit higher.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_02]: His arm shot look a little bit better.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_02]: It looks like a little bit more, uh, better fundamentals for Jon Mets here, as far as that goes when he was throwing the ball around.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going to be, uh, get with Carson and Brady to put together this brutal film all, uh, spring long on Jon Mets here.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: Here's what it was three months ago.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_02]: This is where it's throw the ball.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_02]: out all that stuff because I'm a nerd, John, as you look at Springball, what are you kind of looking for?
- 36:57[SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's shoot the big storyline that you want to watch if you can maybe convince them to like one position group to leave something for personal names.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_03]: So I'll piggyback that real quick, John material needs to change his throwing motion.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_03]: John material needs to change his footwork, get that thing settled down here so he can get it all smooth up here.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: He's a mess from the waist down when he's not running the football.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_03]: He's running the football.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_03]: He's great when he's setting up the pass His feet have been I've gotten him in a lot of trouble because it mess it when you get when your feet are not right Messes up your arm angle messes up your release point messes up your your targeting system however that works for you He's yeah, he needs to work on that.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_03]: He needs to improve the heck out of that and stop throwing the jump passes Those are cute when they happen.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_03]: They were really exciting
- 37:39[SPEAKER_03]: but settle your feet down and deliver a football on time in space to the white to the right target.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_03]: The wide receivers are interesting to me.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_03]: Satanians obviously, a guy who is, you know, proven, explosive, going to be fun to watch no matter what.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_03]: I think he's going to be the go-to guy again, obviously.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_03]: But those other guys coming in, trail Harris and Parker Livingstone, man.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_03]: Those are guys who I think have the ability, I think.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_03]: We've seen it in their, at their previous stops, have the ability to change games.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know that we've had.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_03]: The the opportunity to look at Oklahoma's wider receiver core and say that guy's a game changer that guy's a game chain They might have two or three of those guys now.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_03]: So We'll see how they all fit in and spring and how everybody kind of comes together You're gonna you're gonna need obviously pass blocking you're gonna need obviously a running game You're gonna need a defense that can turn people away
- 38:36[SPEAKER_03]: for the past game to reach its potential.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_03]: But I do think they have the talent.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_03]: And then you throw in some tight ends and the tight ends are, you know, my gosh, they're supposed to be, again, on paper, guys, which we've looked at a lot of paper in the last couple of years and the tight ends have been good on paper.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_03]: Um, but they have the tight.
- 38:54[UNKNOWN]: No.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_03]: on paper uh yes or better than better than like play better better than their production has been but oh yeah but if you can combine guys downfield threats good blockers at the tight imposition with whiter sewers who know how to get down the field and make plays I think Ouse pass game is gonna be a lot better
- 39:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think for me looking at this tight-in position with new coach pretty much totally revamped position as far as player personnel, I think that's what I'm most interested in seeing just having guys like Hayden Hans and Rocky beers, two guys who have combined for thousands of snaps at the D1 level.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think that's huge, both are obviously giant people.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: Having those guys, a guy like Jack Van Du
- 39:39[SPEAKER_00]: Warsaw there who wasn't a huge past catcher in year one with Tennessee played in all 13 games though have that notable drop against Oklahoma But someone with that SEC experience and still young.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to like that two freshmen in Tyler Ruxer and writer mix, Kate McIntyre, John Locke coming back
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to predict exactly what that's going to look like.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: One would think that beers and Hanson would probably be the one to punch at that position, but I wouldn't be surprised to see kind of a rotation, see what Andorsoilier could do, see if mix or rucks are maybe there ready to go, they want it's.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to run a lot differently than Joe John Finley ran that room,
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think he knows a thing or two about being a good tight end at both the college and professional level.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: So kind of just seeing what his coaching style looks like, what he does with the players at tight end.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's what I'm most interested in.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think, and I'm going to go on the defensive side, which we haven't talked about a whole lot, especially the front seven and what some of those guys who returning, who we haven't seen a lot of the last couple years, how those guys sort of blossomed.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_04]: We saw it last year with Taylor Wein, David Stone obviously took a big turn, obviously
- 41:04[SPEAKER_04]: He was great and made a big leap.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_04]: I think you look at who's going to be the next one and you know On the defensive front we've heard a lot about Nigel Smith and I got to talk to Prince E. G. Oma a little bit about Nigel Smith who he grew up with
- 41:19[SPEAKER_04]: in Texas and what he expected from him.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_04]: And then at Linebacker, obviously you lose.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_04]: Owen Heineke there, you bring back Kip Lewis, but last year, such a big piece of their success was the death at that position in particular.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_04]: Where do they go to fill that?
- 41:40[SPEAKER_04]: Does James Nesta take that next step for?
- 41:43[SPEAKER_04]: Does Taylor Heim make a big leap as well?
- 41:48[SPEAKER_04]: What does Cole Sullivan look like coming from Michigan?
- 41:52[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously, they really like him and feel really good about that addition, especially in a lot of, you know, hi-nequies issues going on at the NFL.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_04]: But I'm really looking forward to seeing what that front 7 looks like, depth wise, because they're really good up front.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_04]: The top line guys are as good as they were a year ago, maybe.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_04]: But what made them great last year was their ability to just cycle through guys, and not have that big drop off and to keep guys fresh at the end of games, and they've got to be able to do something like that in 2026 in order to be successful.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_02]: And just to kind of further that, you go one level beyond.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like they've got the depth there at corner, but I know that Robert's for his shootings in Peyton Bowen played a ton and you'll have Peyton Bowen back, but being able to have Jaden Hardy, Michael Bowen, Alsky, those guy, you had so much depth back there that Reggie Powers could step up and play Cheetah and that wasn't a big issue for Oklahoma.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_02]: Well, not only did you graduate out Robert's for his shootings, his cheese chasing down his NFL dreams, but you have also,
- 42:57[SPEAKER_02]: No more chain of hoarding in that room or anything like that.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's kind of like boganowski and Peyton Bowen as far as the experience guys But even boganowski is I have no doubt in his ability to step up into a much larger role But it's not like you're returning a returning starter anything like that.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_02]: So that that's going to be interesting as well It is far as that goes and you mentioned on a high-nekee able let's take a half step back to pro day if you're
- 43:21[SPEAKER_02]: a pro-day enjoyer you know that a lot of that is hey some of these guys I want to run one more coin drill stuff like that but yet the two kind of big things for us one was jade not will get time here in a second uh i appreciate that he talked to us what he said i don't buy a word of it but i appreciate it uh oh and i think though i thought was the really interesting one
- 43:39[SPEAKER_02]: Jim nagging through in that little nugget about Owen at the spring media day where Oklahoma was still working and doing everything that they can Been able to talk to Owen and and just go, hey, what's the next step.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_02]: Owen, I thought was pretty candid that the next step would be a lawsuit.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_02]: I'll otter it on Chandler.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, technically an injunction.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_02]: He can do other legal stuff.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: He's a smart guy.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_02]: It would be to file an injunction as far as that goes.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I asked him, why haven't you filed that injunction yet?
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: And he basically said, well, I could have filed it or not.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_02]: And you look at Tridout Chamblis.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_02]: If he loses his appeal, which I don't know which appeal were technically on, but the NCAA appealed to the Mississippi Supreme Court, then Tridout Chamblis is in a spot where he's not been doing the NFL draft process.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_02]: then he could if he loses that not be in college football next year and and on a high and he basically said I'm focused on the draft one because you know he believes that he can chase that down but to he said I can't afford to play or to not play football next year.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_02]: So if it gets to draft day and it doesn't get drafted and doesn't get picked up to a team I think that's where they might more seriously consider some of the injunctions stuff like that.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_02]: But the only thing he can control is trying to juice his draft process and into his draft stop through the draft process.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's where he's focused on now.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, I thought it was kind of insightful from Owen, because I think we've all sat back and gone outside of just not having the appetite to do a big legal battle, which I know that Oklahoma, I'm sure could find lawyers and judges and all that stuff, so it's not like a financial burden on Owen Heineke, but it is just a long process of, I don't really know what I'm doing, will I, won't I, it's kind of out of my hands, seems that Owen's kind of taking the approach of I'm going to control what I can control and we'll just kind of let the chips fall where they may on the other side of the draft.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I think that's really all you can do from a guy like Owen Heinecki just act like you are going to the league.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, we've talked about he doesn't just have a plethora of tape being someone that was deep in the depth chart before the 2025 season.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: So I do think these few weeks before the draft to the ones that have preceded Pro Day, very important for a guy like that and he seems like he has the right attitude as far as
- 45:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I hope there is this last ditch shot, but if there's not screw it, I am now a professional player.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna do what I can.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_00]: I've done it before at Oklahoma.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_00]: No one really expected me to be a key player.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: 2025, he's one of the best on that defense.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you've got to like that attitude, and I think there's a lot that he probably gained from participating in Pro Day, going out to Indianapolis.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, just speaking with him, I'm sure his interviews went well that he had.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_00]: and Indianapolis with teams.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: He just seems like very professional.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like a lot of the outgoing players do, but he seems like he's doing the right things and still holding out a little bit of hope even if it's this big.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_02]: You want to read the full on a high-to-key story, everything you need to say.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma Sooners on SI.com.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_02]: That's the website.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's always free.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_02]: Don't have to.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_02]: As who always likes saying, rightly so you don't have to put in a single credit card to read any of our stuff or anything like that.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_02]: Just hit the football tab scroll.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_02]: It was last week.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_02]: So it's under a couple of stories.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_02]: If you're looking to get right up on all the new guys.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_02]: for Springball gets going.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_02]: We also have all those Oklahoma Seniors on si.com.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_02]: If you scroll a little bit, you'll also read a story on Jaden.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_02]: He finally speaks about what happened.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_02]: And again, full credit Jaden.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_02]: He was great with us, talking just for doing the interview.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_02]: You don't have to on pro day.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think he knew that he'd probably get a bunch of the same questions that we asked him as far as
- 47:11[SPEAKER_02]: What happened last year at in Jaden Ots said basically got made up in camp, which we knew and that by the time that I was healthy, everyone was rolling, he was then asked when were you healthy.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_02]: He said we too, if you check notes, no one was rolling in week two, but Jaden Ots, he was very, very classy and respectful to not like.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_02]: Try to throw any coaches under the boss or anything like that.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_02]: He basically just kind of took the approach of, I'm really glad that this happened to me this year because in the pros at some point, you're gonna be stuck behind somebody on a depth chart and all you can do is keep a good attitude, be a good teammate, continue to come to practice, show up every day and kind of wait for your shot and try to earn it.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's what Jade and I had to say.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_02]: uh... car center about surround that as well and it's great on paper i don't think it adds up if we like carry the one and do the math but i'd it's also like one of those things and what's it supposed to say i hate to mark go we find every that i mean like it that's not gonna improve your draft stock either if you try to throw your old position coach under the bus for anything make it excuse me everything like that
- 48:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, what you said I agree with as far as Kudos to him for talking to the media.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't have to do that.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: I would totally understand not talking to us after his stinker of a season that he had in Norman.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: There's no denying the guy's potential.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he has the size to play in the NFL.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: You saw some flashes in the senior bull, much to the dismay of OU fans who were really not happy with how that whole thing shook out.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: But it's
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: you've got to look at this season what happened as a red flag just obviously some injury concerns obviously he didn't come to Oklahoma just fully healthy but just kind of seeming checked out the whole season and never having not even a small role just no role with this team that's got to stick out I think in the minds of NFL GMs because
- 49:00[SPEAKER_00]: You look at someone that he tries his best to play through the injury.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, his stats aren't great, but never disassociated from the program.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of NFL executives would see that as, okay, we see the potential that are still some bugs here.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: Gotta work through some of that health stuff.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a big just ceiling for this guy.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're like, that ceiling's still there, but what's the likelihood that it comes out?
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: At least if I'm an NFL GM, that definitely makes me at least hesitate.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_00]: before we're sinking the guy like you to not.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_02]: As Sam Presty once said, I don't know if Jade not thought this, but I would adopt the season of discovery moniker a couple years after a season of discovery, the thunder were back and playing well, maybe that can help Jade not free tip to you as far as what I'm sure that I'm sure he's going to have a ton of conversations with scouts, GMs, all that stuff, had that opportunity out the senior bull, as Carson mentioned.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_02]: So we will see that before we get on to other stuff, who've you have one more thing kind of adding on to the big A block today,
- 50:02[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'll just finish that thought on how many schools take what they call allocations from student fees, state funds.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_03]: Here's what fits under the definition of allocations.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_03]: Student fees, direct and indirect institutional support and state money allocated.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_03]: Basically, everything not generated by the athletic department.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_03]: OU is currently one of 12 schools that does not take any of those student fees, state funds, taxpayer dollars, or anything from the university general fund.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_03]: So one of 12 schools nationwide.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_03]: and we're talking the entire division one, so 300 and whatever 50 schools.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_03]: That's pretty remarkable, but it's like me and Abraham both said it's probably time to move past that line of thinking and start taking those instead of asking the same athletic boosters every year for more money and more money and more money.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_03]: Probably time to start taking some of those in the SEC alone.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_03]: uh... the the the school that takes the most money but i should say the athletic department that takes the most money most allocations are you ready for this it's Auburn big surprise uh... fifteen point five million dollars last year uh... eight point nine percent of their athletic budget uh... athletic revenue came from allocations second was Missouri third
- 51:30[SPEAKER_03]: was Alabama.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_03]: Missouri's 13 million, Alabama, 11 million.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_03]: After that, you get into the single digits, 4 million, 3 million.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, OU is currently one of four five schools in the SEC that do not accept allocations outside, you know, taxpayer dollars and stuff like that.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_03]: LSU, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Mississippi State, as well as Oklahoma.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_03]: So,
- 51:53[SPEAKER_03]: I find that interesting.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_03]: That there's there's there's schools there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's there's
- 52:18[SPEAKER_04]: in large part and I heard it every time I wrote these stories at the Oklahoma and I heard it, you know, a few weeks ago when I wrote about the financial report from this year, the people who you ding you for that are generally going to ding you for it anyway, you know, any time that tuition goes up,
- 52:37[SPEAKER_04]: What's one of the first things you hear?
- 52:38[SPEAKER_04]: Well, they can afford to pay the football coach this much, even though those monies are coming from two completely separate pots.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_04]: Or if a football coach gets a raise, what about the math professor?
- 52:53[SPEAKER_04]: We're gonna pay him and things like that.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the people who are going to ding you for it are generally already ding in you for it, even if they don't know the reality of things for whatever reason, so I think it's coming.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_04]: It's just a matter of when and how.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_02]: And as you said, some of the fits in that definition of allocation could be not like, hey, the university goes to the state of Oklahoma, we need $4 million for a basketball team.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_02]: It could be as simple as every student has $100 added into their students and fees, which
- 53:28[SPEAKER_02]: I get it.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_02]: I would not have been stuck back, but you know, a hundred dollars in that then goes there.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks, part of whatever.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, what I'm just learning from all this is Abraham and time math professor raises as he just covered that his feet, I know, Aversie.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_04]: I'm a big, I'm a big proponent of math teachers.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_04]: My sister is one.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_04]: So,
- 53:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was about to say, just leave the social studies money alone and my mom will be happy so that you're okay.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: Let's move out of the football slash of the crown discussion.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_02]: March madness is coming to Norman America.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: You're not just going to have to root for Kelvin Samson at Paycom on Thursday if you want some OU adjacent vibes as Ginny Brown check in the suit or women are hosting the first two rounds.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_02]: We knew that on Saturday, it was announced to alphabetical order, here you're 16 host sites, meaning that you're going to be on a one, two, three, or four in line.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_02]: The only question for Oklahoma coming at the SC tournament, SEC tournament, excuse me, was three line or four line, the Brackatologist community at large had said that Oklahoma probably buffed back down to a.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_02]: four line after that loss to LSU and Greenville and guess what, Charlie Green was right.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma four seed in the Sacramento, one of the two Sacramento was at the Sacramento four doesn't really matter.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_04]: Sacramento four.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma is a four seed matched up technically if they make this week 16 everything goes chalk.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_02]: with South Carolina, but before any of that happens, Abraham, Oklahoma, Idaho, nine o'clock on Friday night.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_02]: If the Colorado State Michigan State game before OU and Idaho runs late, there is a chance that both men's tournament and women's tournament, the suitors and the vandals could be the last game out for all college basketball in the NCAA tournament on Friday.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_02]: I leave this with you.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_02]: If it was 1907, would you rather have been a sooner or a vandal?
- 55:24[SPEAKER_04]: I love the vandal nickname, I think it's fantastic, so it's a hard choice because these are two to the most unique nicknames in all of college athletics, but should be a fun win.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_04]: There's three out of these four teams, Colorado State, being the outlier, have really fast-paced offences that like to get up and down the floor, so I think it'll be a fun regional.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_04]: Although I expect Oklahoma to win and win fairly handily in the first round, it's certainly an intriguing matchup with the style that Idaho likes to play and they will not shy away from trying to get up and down the floor with the suitors.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this could be a point-screaker.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_02]: We might be staring at that as far as what both teams want to do.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_02]: The thing that Idaho will run into is that they've, you look up and down their schedule.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_02]: When is the big sky?
- 56:17[SPEAKER_02]: A really good team, but they did not have like a buy game against UCLA or something like that where they've seen any center that looks feels or is as good as Reagan beers.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_02]: So I image to see what that looks like.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_02]: Both Carson and A will be there with me in Norman.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, when I look at this, I was kind of looking at some X factors.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, you want to get past Idaho.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_02]: You should get past Idaho.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_02]: For me, I'm looking at Chavez and Bears.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_02]: Gotta play well.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the three other little things I'm looking at for Oklahoma when we regroup for us to be previewing the sweet 16 first off.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_02]: If a couple of threes here and there makes helping off regular beers even more difficult for a school like Idaho or Michigan State or Colorado State, especially if it's the Spartans the second will be Brooklyn Stewart minutes when when regular beers isn't on the floor and then this to me.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_02]: The seniors are guaranteed now.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_02]: One game left at Wade Noble Center.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_02]: They're hoping to play two more.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_02]: I'm looking at Peyton Verhol, someone that had a very clear to find role the previous two years.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like she's kind of been for by her standards a little bit in the wilderness, but if you get
- 57:22[SPEAKER_02]: Peyton Verhol's off ball.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: This is one of those.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_02]: We see this all the time of course, and the seniors just put a weird year aside and say my math school future is now.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's in front of me at least at Oklahoma I'm looking at those three outside of the obvious names for Oklahoma to see hey are we going to be previewing us out Carolina rematch or we're going to be utilizing the season come next Wednesday
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think those are all three valid.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think Reagan beer staying at a foul trouble is big, especially against a team like Idaho, like Apertuchton.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: They probably don't have the tools to defend someone like Reagan beers.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_00]: She is that good.
- 57:57[SPEAKER_00]: She is that big, that athletic.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen her get in foul trouble, and that hurts this team.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_00]: She is, I mean, obviously, Alicia, that star freshman, but it's hard to match the impact that someone that Reagan Bears has on this team, especially against a mid major, even though they are a good one, very good record coming into Norman.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to see them matching up with someone with the size of Reagan Bears.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_00]: So if she can stay out of foul trouble,
- 58:24[SPEAKER_00]: Um, stay on the floor for most of the game.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: You would think that's huge.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_00]: Not only in that game, but further down the line, too.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_02]: Also, just a weird quirk of this.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_02]: No one cares about this, but Avery, if you're, you know, brachatology nerd, not like we have all year.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan State was really starting to early part of big tin play.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_02]: And when Oklahoma was not on the four line, it was kind of like Michigan State that took Oklahoma spot on the four line.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then if Oklahoma comes out of the ashes and has that run against Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, boom, boom, boom.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_02]: Michigan State kind of hits a rut.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_02]: It's just kind of weird.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_02]: If it ends up being chalk and you get the the four and the five, not that they've really been intertwined, but they kind of have been if you kind of track some of the brachatology stuff.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, you know, what you mentioned there was just sort of a back and forth all year and they were sort of on our minds a little bit, but then they're also intertwined, you know, with the players, you look at Reagan beers, started her career at Oregon State and had some great years there.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_04]: Well, Michigan State's leading score at Grace fans slewton was at Oregon.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_04]: And they had some battles there that played the believe three times, but especially that last time was a lot about Reagan Bears and Grace fans sluiting.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_04]: She's really the only answer to the size of Bears that they have at six foot three there.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_04]: And then Peyton Verholz, who you talked about there, and I think you're absolutely right.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_04]: And you know, we've seen her go through these wild ups and downs where she'll be at the center of everything Oklahoma's doing and then she'll not disappear.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe just to be a little bit on the stat sheet, but she's still very much involved.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_04]: A lot like, you know, not exactly the same because their games are much different.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_04]: But
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_04]: you know, the impact that say Isaiah Hartinstein has had over the last couple games for the thunder that goes far beyond just what you see in the box score.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_04]: That's sort of been Peyton Verholst for a lot of the season, but she started her career at Louisville.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_04]: Well, Jalen Brown, who is one of four players averaging more than 10 points a game for Michigan State, was at Louisville as well for Peyton Verholst's last little,
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_04]: half a year there, her semester before she transferred to OU.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_04]: So this is a team where the teams aren't familiar with each other as a whole, but there's some big time familiarity with the roster with a couple of the OU players.
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_03]: Guys, I don't know how this is going to play out, but if Jenny Baranchic could draw up a blueprint for the first couple rounds for those two home games, I would think that she would want to get more contributions, more significant and big time contributions.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_03]: from someone who's not named Aliya Chavez.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_03]: Chavez right now is a freshman.
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_03]: We know that.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_03]: She leads the team in total minutes, 979 minutes.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think she's hit the wall if you look at her shooting percentages.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_03]: 11 out of the last 12 games, she's under 40%.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_03]: Like weigh under in a lot of these instances.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_03]: And I think as a freshman, you know, you used to play those AAU games and summarily games all year long.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_03]: sometimes a little more.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_03]: She's now playing division one basketball.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_03]: She's in a 31st game.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_03]: I think she's kind of hit the wall.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_03]: I think you're going to have to have somebody like Xia Van or Sahara Williams or Ryan Peyton Verhol's step up and take on more of the scoring load, more of the shooting load because they're just not, it's not an efficient offense right now.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_03]: It's not an efficient product and a lot of that is their best player, Alia Chavez, is not making shots.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_02]: There's also, when you look at, I know that the big 12 have moved to this when they decided to play both tournaments in the same arena, which meant that they're no longer playing at the same time.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_02]: But SDC and Big 12 are on that same slate of their tournament plays a week earlier than selection Sunday, so you have the, I hesitate to call it a by week because we know they're working there.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_02]: working as hard as they can throughout that whole week self-scouting and doing their last little adjustments before they turn that over, but it'll be about waslea-shab as able and just everybody, Brooklyn Stewart, because I laughed and all the younger contributors to the scene that have not been through the wars aimers, like were they able to
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_02]: properly balanced the op week as far as getting the rest in recovery to be at your best for the NCAA tournament while not getting too rusty because the the second year old a ball out it it's not like greenville where yes if you lose you're going home but if you lose you're going home to wait and see what you're getting on selection Sunday now if you have one bad game we know this that it it can be over just like that.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think there's a, you know, good and bad to that dynamic of the extra week I was always a fan of the way that the big 12 did it a few years ago when they were playing the tournament sort of simultaneously and you got to sort of build some momentum into that and not have.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_04]: a chance to, you know, catch its breath like, you know, most teams on the men's side do, although the mid-major certainly do it a little bit differently there, but I think for this team,
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_04]: So to Hube's point about Oliya Chavez, you know, playing a ton of games, I think it helps them to sort of regroup, you know, he mentions Ivan, while she's got some experience, she's still a really young player as well, and certainly taking on a much bigger role this year, I think that time can help her and anytime you give.
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_04]: You know, Reagan Bears a chance to catch her breath a little bit.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_04]: She's got a chance to be much much better as well because she is sort of taking a pounding during SEC play Also, so I think on balance, it's a good thing for this team to have that extra time to catch us breath self scout like you mentioned Ryan and also, you know
- 1:04:26[SPEAKER_04]: turn its attentions toward the NCAA tournament and not just become and fresh off a loss in the SEC tournament, you know, going into this thing.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_02]: Thursday, we'll be down in Norman for NCAA tournament media day, all that stuff.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_02]: So be sure you hit up the site, OklahomaSoonersonasside.com for all that content from Gini Brown Check in the crew.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_02]: All the stuff John Hoover Media on YouTube for all the videos.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_02]: Now that jazz will get all of that up.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_02]: as soon as it becomes available in a genie brown check.
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_02]: And certainly Idaho's coach, I'm off to the Diamond Sports.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_02]: If you missed it, Abraham, I taught for way too long about the softball program on Monday.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_02]: Every Monday, I say that in this next week, it'll be on Tuesday, because Oklahoma is in Oxford this week and for the Saturday, Sunday, Monday series,
- 1:05:23[SPEAKER_02]: Tonight they'll be on the road at Memphis not going to do too much preview of that because by the time we listen to this will either be an hour to a way or be listened to it tomorrow that game will have already happened but it will be the return game home for Miley would chain you after she spent a year in Oxford helping Oklahoma get to or Ole Miss excuse me get to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma so we'll see how that goes baseball it's I like we alluded to earlier a bad day to do it but
- 1:05:49[SPEAKER_02]: As we know midweek baseball just the midweek happens across the country are carnage just look at Texas last night You see a legot push by Pepperdine.
- 1:05:57[SPEAKER_02]: I think they went ahead by four and like the six through the seventh And we don't recognize midweek baseball that happened Miami unless you look up and down and realize that all the braves won the world baseball classic So we're cool there, but Carson Who was on the field to get in that save last night?
- 1:06:13[SPEAKER_02]: Shukargo come who wasn't playing anybody it seems because why would why would the Padres let us pitch our best pictures neither here nor there of course two and three for Oklahoma off of A&M and three just weird chaotic games that goes
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't we can start with the win.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_02]: I would prefer to start with the slam of the bat the league review for Jackson will it's that the league basically said I understand you have video that he's not yelling at the dugout, but he was tossed on the field and then we had a war words on Friday, which we'd coaching staffs chaos Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:06:47[SPEAKER_02]: I told Abraham us on Monday Carson.
- 1:06:50[SPEAKER_02]: If you get into an argument with a team, midway through the first game of the series, and you haven't played that team in a conference series in multiple years, I think that that is the moment that Oklahoma baseball became an SEC baseball program.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, it definitely helps, especially with the program that has been as good as A&M has in recent years.
- 1:07:11[SPEAKER_00]: That whole situation was just weird.
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_00]: I thought there was a little inconsistency with tossing willets and not tossing Michael early.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think you've got to either toss neither of them or toss both of them.
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_00]: That was the biggest weirdness.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_00]: I understand.
- 1:07:25[SPEAKER_00]: why early would be upset, but you also can't toss the bat back to home plate.
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's ground for rejection of both of them, or just say this is baseball, it's a tense sport, everyone stays.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think people would have been just to spy on with that.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, that was a whole weird thing, definitely a lot of passion in the series.
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's a bummer that some days game was as wacky as it was with that practically being an EF1 tornado with the winds.
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_00]: But the big takeaway that they can take from that game, I mean the pitching was bad on both sides, the fueling was bad on both sides.
- 1:08:00[SPEAKER_00]: Finding a way to win that game, I think it was a 12 to 11 final, finding a way to draw walks, get those timely hits, even if they're not listed as errors, more hits, because of some bad feeling, that's big.
- 1:08:14[SPEAKER_00]: You take SEC wins.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_00]: series wins, how you can get them aside from Missouri.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_00]: That should be an SEC sweep.
- 1:08:21[SPEAKER_00]: But outside of Missouri, you take SEC wins, how you can get them, especially with a team as much offensive say in him has.
- 1:08:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think both those teams are pretty similar in the sense that those are two really dang good alignups.
- 1:08:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think both pitching staffs got a little bit exposed in that series, though Cameron Johnson, we've seen what he can look like at his best.
- 1:08:41[SPEAKER_00]: At his worst, he can have command issues, same with Elojamer curious, kind of his first trouble that he got in all season and game two, ended up getting the loss in that one.
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_00]: But ultimately, I think there's a lot to be encouraged about the bats.
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, they look fantastic.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_00]: Brendan Brock is looking like the prize of the portal.
- 1:09:00[SPEAKER_00]: I guess they got from the junior college level.
- 1:09:03[SPEAKER_00]: So he's been great.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_00]: Gonna be interesting this week and they're playing against a team.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'll let you that, for us you standards down if they're unranked right now.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_00]: So on paper, playing a weaker opponent than what they saw last week, but it's also an Alex box stadium arguably the best in college baseball, crazy fans, trashy fans, whatever you want to call them, they're gonna be out in droves, supporting their team.
- 1:09:25[SPEAKER_00]: So winning a game or two, I mean,
- 1:09:28[SPEAKER_00]: SEC Road series are so hard and baseball that you feel like sometimes if you can be a team even if the record is down that has as much talent with LSU get one or two wins.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a pretty successful week and just kind of avoiding that sweep.
- 1:09:42[SPEAKER_04]: They're passionate.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_03]: Carson, they're passionate.
- 1:09:45[SPEAKER_04]: Arkansas baseball fans can reach Carson Field at
- 1:09:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_02]: I would say the LSU fancer are people and might just be my people, but that's by the two questions.
- 1:09:57[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think that it is something that you could just, it happens once and so it's like answered and you kind of have to answer the bell every single time and as you see play.
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_02]: But we had talked about a course and that Oklahoma had talked about this offseason.
- 1:10:09[SPEAKER_02]: They don't want to,
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_02]: abandoned that the chaos and the base running and things like that, but they need to add a little bit more power so that if you're in a rut, you can make that happen.
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_02]: As you mentioned, going heads up with the power and the offense today and him has certainly a pass for the first weekend.
- 1:10:24[SPEAKER_02]: And then the other thing, it's like we went back to the Arizona State midweek.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_02]: I thought in the weird way, it was the best thing in the world.
- 1:10:31[SPEAKER_02]: for them to take it and achieve that first game because in the SEC, you're going to have bad days.
- 1:10:37[SPEAKER_02]: You can be the best team in the country.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to have bad days.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's about, can you find a way to scratch one out on a week and that you lose the series?
- 1:10:43[SPEAKER_02]: Can you have a bad Saturday and put that behind you and go win a series on a Sunday?
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's the kind of stuff that separates the true contenders in the South Eastern Conference from.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_02]: This team's dangerous and you're hoping that you get hot at the right time at the end of the year, and like we said, you got to answer that call every single weekend, but one of the weekends through, and I thought Oklahoma got two thumbs up on both of us.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think you've got to take, like I said, SEC series against good opponents from the conference.
- 1:11:11[SPEAKER_00]: That is a good thing.
- 1:11:12[SPEAKER_00]: Finding ways to win two one-run games.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's definitely a separator winning close games like that.
- 1:11:19[SPEAKER_00]: Um, they had a chance on the Saturday game, too.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_00]: They couldn't make anything of a basis loaded no outs.
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_00]: I guess they got one.
- 1:11:25[SPEAKER_00]: They couldn't make much of a basis loaded no outs threat.
- 1:11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so you look at that.
- 1:11:30[SPEAKER_00]: They are...
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_00]: Responding well to adversity, you look at that blowout loss to Arizona State on that Tuesday coming back walking off the next day and that loss is aging better considering ASU just won a series against TCU so I mean they really haven't lost to just any garbage teams It's no one like a Tarleton state even last night against southeast Louisiana that's a respectable mid major program.
- 1:11:53[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to lose those games.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_00]: There's no two ways about that.
- 1:11:56[SPEAKER_00]: one place in the SEC, one place in the Southland, but weird things happen.
- 1:12:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's midweek, baseball, like you said, as long as they respond the right way, that might not be the worst thing for them either.
- 1:12:08[SPEAKER_02]: We will see, like you mentioned, Elisher and the Texas all the other side, so a big close to March for Skip Johnson and the squad out there.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_02]: Next week, be another busy week,
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_02]: Women's basketballs, as far as their first weekend at the NCAA Tournament will be preparing for the opening of Springball, Oklahoma, the University on Springbreak this week.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to get their 15 practices going in full swing next week.
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_02]: So we're actually going to be in your feeds on back to back days.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_02]: A we're not going to link up on Tuesday recapping the OU Ole Miss softball series for the softball show.
- 1:12:44[SPEAKER_02]: Then we'll re-rack on Wednesday and we'll be full blown.
- 1:12:48[SPEAKER_02]: position by position spring preview women's basketball review if Oklahoma joins any other postseason tournaments on the men's basketball side will keep you locked in with that as well.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_02]: In addition to the crown, they try to enter the NBA playoffs.
- 1:13:00[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see other than that though.
- 1:13:03[SPEAKER_02]: We missed the thing today.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_02]: Women's gym has headed up to Tulsa right for SEC tournament.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_02]: SEC meet SEC tournament.
- 1:13:11[SPEAKER_02]: It looks the proper
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, you see.
- 1:13:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:13:14[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I was looking for.
- 1:13:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_02]: There we go.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't see it.
- 1:13:17[SPEAKER_04]: Me either works.
- 1:13:18[SPEAKER_02]: That's going on Saturday.
- 1:13:20[SPEAKER_02]: So be sure you're hitting up the website.
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_02]: Avery will have all the takeaways from KJ squad as they get going there.
- 1:13:26[SPEAKER_02]: Anything else going on that we've covered?
- 1:13:28[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like we've talked about a lot.
- 1:13:30[SPEAKER_02]: We could keep going.
- 1:13:31[SPEAKER_02]: But we have to cut off at some point.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_03]: You want softball.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to have to in the softball show in Monday.
- 1:13:35[SPEAKER_03]: Is that how this works?
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_02]: stop, but yeah, get some softball.
- 1:13:40[SPEAKER_02]: You got plenty of it as we're overflowing.
- 1:13:42[SPEAKER_02]: If you'd like Abraham, I can want to call it a guy minor, some more if you'd like, but we talked a lot of guy minor on the model.
- 1:13:49[SPEAKER_03]: Guy minor is fast and they're still hitting home runs.
- 1:13:52[SPEAKER_03]: There's your softball report for this week.
- 1:13:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I officially kickstarted the JTGASO for a system of the year and honor that he's not quite landed just yet.
- 1:14:00[SPEAKER_02]: I would say if there is ever year to do it, it might be this one for JTGASO as they work through all the pitching stuff, this offense is gonna give them until we talked about it on Monday and I thought about it for 48 hours, and I think it's still right.
- 1:14:15[SPEAKER_02]: This pitching staff will have until the women's college world series.
- 1:14:19[SPEAKER_02]: The offenses that good to get locked in and figure out whatever they need to figure out.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they've they've got plenty of time to work through some things.
- 1:14:27[SPEAKER_04]: They are doing that right now.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_04]: Audrey Lauer is really good.
- 1:14:31[SPEAKER_04]: Mylo Machinio has been really good, but obviously wants to be a little bit better.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_04]: This weekend then she was last weekend and some day maybe.
- 1:14:40[SPEAKER_04]: We'll see Sydney Burzon again, but Alyssa Parker and Kirsten Deal are keeping things locked down in her absence.
- 1:14:48[SPEAKER_04]: So they've got some time to work through some things.
- 1:14:52[SPEAKER_04]: The biggest question right now is not does the home run record fall, but by how much and
- 1:15:00[SPEAKER_04]: are they able to hold off UCLA who could be a hard-charging to get there as well because they're hitting a lot of bombs now as well but oh you still got a pretty healthy lead.
- 1:15:12[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see what SEC pictures have to say about that.
- 1:15:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they'll feel like some actual stats are very terrible.
- 1:15:18[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see also if, can we, when's Coach Wenzere's media day, is the Wednesday before the event?
- 1:15:26[SPEAKER_02]: Could we get Megan Grant and Kindle Wells to do like Home Run Derby on that Wednesday, just as like a little like, hey, the games are gonna start tomorrow, but these two absolute bad asses are gonna get after it.
- 1:15:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think that the world would say, yes, please, can we get some of that?
- 1:15:44[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think we need like, uh, you know, uh, a black and white TV at, uh, riggly field in Los Angeles, who've made might know what I'm talking about.
- 1:15:54[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if Ryan or Carson do.
- 1:15:57[SPEAKER_04]: They have no chance they know what you're talking about.
- 1:15:59[SPEAKER_04]: Home run Derby.
- 1:16:00[SPEAKER_03]: One out.
- 1:16:00[SPEAKER_04]: I can't get paid.
- 1:16:01[SPEAKER_04]: Two out.
- 1:16:03[SPEAKER_04]: loan run Derby television show which I loved watching reruns of on ESPN back when there was very little on during the off season.
- 1:16:16[SPEAKER_04]: So it would be fun and it's heck, it's fun this year just keeping up with who's taking the lead.
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_04]: you've got to check it mid-up by minute it seems like when either these teams are going ahead to head, because it's amazing the way that kind of wells is hitting even in the crazy wind that Carson talked about on Sunday, which was also affecting things over the softball field and then everything that Megan Grant has done at UCLA has just been phenomenal as well.
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_02]: You boys forget how to radio with.
- 1:16:47[SPEAKER_02]: We watch Plenty of YouTube in the Corporal Breaks back of exactly that.
- 1:16:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm insulted by you too, sir.
- 1:16:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's pretty clear.
- 1:16:53[SPEAKER_02]: But that will be, like we said, Memphis on Wednesday night, Saturday, Sunday, Monday for softball, they'll be out in Oxford, will recap it on Tuesday.
- 1:17:02[SPEAKER_02]: Head over to the website, OaklandSuitarsonasside.com.
- 1:17:04[SPEAKER_02]: Hit that softball tab if you would like to read about why I've had a gas cell, things that'll also parker.
- 1:17:09[SPEAKER_02]: can become an all-time great at Oklahoma and keep that saved because hopefully by and out this time next week or maybe by the end of next week we'll have a big couple of features dropped and on the player's I think you want to read about it as far as getting deeper and deeper into the SEC slate on the sample set
- 1:17:51[SPEAKER_01]: Until next time, we'll talk to you about the series by the side of our guest piece.
