- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Tuesday, it's the 28th of
- 0:17May, and you have invited me in so that you and I can read
- 0:21another chapter of God's Word together today and today.
- 0:25That particular chapter is the last chapter in that first
- 0:29stanza, the first section, and the book of Proverbs.
- 0:32This is wisdom literature at its best, isn't it friends?
- 0:36Isn't it? Isn't it something to read this
- 0:39literature from a time when there was considered such a
- 0:43thing as a universal wisdom? You know, here we live in the
- 0:48postmodern era where everyone's opinion is equally valid.
- 0:52Some are wise, some are foolish. But all voices should be taken
- 0:56into, you know, accounts with equal weighting, almost.
- 0:59And so we've really lost this sense in today's world where
- 1:03there is a truth, a source of wisdom.
- 1:07And when our brains are struggling to work out which
- 1:10voice to recognise as true and wise, well, we have the most
- 1:16wonderful knowledge that it's not a set of standards that
- 1:19bring truth, but it's a person. And that person's Jesus, he is
- 1:23the truth. But in this world, this ancient
- 1:26world that didn't know Jesus, they tried to capture truth
- 1:30inspired by God's Spirit in these books of wisdom.
- 1:34So let us read together this final chapter in this first
- 1:38section of Proverbs. Proverbs Chapter 9.
- 1:53Wisdom has built her house. She has carved its seven
- 1:57columns. She has prepared a great
- 2:00banquet, mix the wines and set the table.
- 2:03She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come.
- 2:07She calls out from the heights overlooking the city.
- 2:10Come in with me, she urges the simple to those who lack good
- 2:14judgement, she says. Come eat my food and drink the
- 2:18wine I've mixed. Leave your simple ways behind
- 2:22and begin to live. Learn to use good judgement.
- 2:27Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return.
- 2:31Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt, so don't bother
- 2:36correcting mockers. They will only hate you, but
- 2:39correct the wise and they will love you.
- 2:42Instruct the wise and they will be even wiser.
- 2:46Teach the righteous and they will learn even more.
- 2:50Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.
- 2:54Knowledge of the Holy 1 results in good judgement.
- 2:58Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life.
- 3:02If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.
- 3:06If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.
- 3:11The woman named Folly is brash. She is ignorant and doesn't know
- 3:16it. She sits in her doorway and the
- 3:19heights overlooking the city. She calls out to men going by
- 3:23who are minding their own business.
- 3:26Come in with me, she urges. The simple To those who lack
- 3:30good judgement, she says stolen water is refreshing.
- 3:34Food eaten in secret tastes the best, but little do they know
- 3:39that the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of
- 3:43the grave. Thank you, Lord, for this
- 3:55invitation into Your wisdom, this invitation to humble
- 4:00ourselves, to be open to correction, to be open to
- 4:05rebuke, to be open to You showing us a better way and that
- 4:11unlike those who chase folly, we don't push back and reject.
- 4:17But with humility, Lord, we hear you and we acknowledge that we
- 4:22are not perfect, that that we want to be like those wives who
- 4:27would take on your feedback and adapt and learn and grow and
- 4:32become even wiser in pursuing you.
- 4:36Because what more noble a life gold could there be?
- 4:40And spending our life in pursuit of you and your wisdom.
- 4:43Your wisdom, which is ultimately to stay connected to you and
- 4:48your Spirit. To hear you're still quiet voice
- 4:53guiding, nurturing, correcting and leading us into the open
- 4:58arms of Jesus. So here we are, Lord, your
- 5:02people, who lack wisdom but are open and ready for yours.
- 5:08We are yours, a living sacrifice offered to you, and we can only
- 5:13do all of this and pray all of this through the saving name of
- 5:16Jesus. Ah, man.
