- 0:01Come down here and help me out here.
- 0:03And I my main job, my main passion is you the track coach.
- 0:08So I do that in two ways. One is if you are on Twitter, my
- 0:12goal and life, besides having better audio than what it is
- 0:15right now, is to follow you on Twitter.
- 0:18So that starts with I need you to follow me because I'm trying
- 0:21to find everybody, but not everybody has track coach in
- 0:24your bio, by the way. Let's get that done.
- 0:26But please check out Twitter and follow me at Mike Cunningham.
- 0:30It's all one word. No dots, no dashes, just my
- 0:32name. Mike Cunningham.
- 0:34It fixed itself. Oh, you did it.
- 0:36You're genius. See.
- 0:37Sorry. You're such a genius.
- 0:39The other way that I do this to uplift and honor what you do as
- 0:42a track and field coach here in America is I host a podcast for
- 0:46Gil Athletics called the Gil Athletics Connections Podcast
- 0:48where we interview coaches from around the country on all
- 0:51levels. High school, college division,
- 0:54one professional talking about their.
- 0:56Journey in this great profession, how they got into
- 0:58it, mentors along the way and lessons learned and things like
- 1:02that. And so if you're a podcast
- 1:04listener and you'd like to learn from other coaches from around
- 1:06the country, would love for you to check that out here on the
- 1:08podcast at the Gale Athletics Connections Podcast.
- 1:12So when we were looking at different people here to present
- 1:15this weekend and different ideas, I thought what a great
- 1:18idea would be to maybe have some more interactivity and have one
- 1:21of our leaders that we have here in this great state of Texas for
- 1:24high school track and field and we're going to.
- 1:26Do a little bit of a, a Q&A, but Q&A works a lot better when it
- 1:31comes from you. So what we're going to do is I
- 1:33have about 3 questions that Shelton and I have worked out
- 1:36that we're going to talk about up here back and forth.
- 1:39And then I'm going to, for the older folks that remember Phil
- 1:41Donahue, I'm going to Phil Donahue, this bad boy.
- 1:43And I'm going to go around the stage.
- 1:46And let me tell you, as you're starting to think about whether
- 1:48you should or should not ask a question, please do.
- 1:52The only bad question is a question that's not asked.
- 1:54There are other people. If you're curious about
- 1:56something, someone else in this room right now is also going to
- 2:00be curious about that. And that's how we bring value to
- 2:02each other. So without further ado, help me
- 2:05welcome the USTFCCCA National High School Boys Coach of the
- 2:10Year state titles. I mean, if you don't know who
- 2:13Shelton Irvin is, great. I'm glad you're here because
- 2:15you're going to learn a lot more about him today.
- 2:17Help me welcome. Oh, and his best thing for his
- 2:19biography is? He's been on the Gill Athletics
- 2:21Connections podcast, so if you want to know his whole journey,
- 2:23and it was amazing by the way, check it out.
- 2:26Help me welcome the wives, the wonderful Mr. Shelton Urban
- 2:33Shelton, thanks for being brave enough to trust me to be up here
- 2:36to pepper you with questions and then the the unknown questions.
- 2:40Not a problem. Anytime I get an opportunity to
- 2:42talk to my peers and advocate for the sport, sport that I want
- 2:46to continue to progress and grow as a whole, I think it's a
- 2:49beautiful thing. Also, man, love it.
- 2:52We were talking about different topics that would maybe
- 2:54helpfully bring value to all of you out there.
- 2:56And one of the things that I think is interesting that's
- 2:59happening this year is I believe the state meet is moving.
- 3:02And we've already had a lot of sessions where we talked about
- 3:05starting from the end working backwards.
- 3:08And so if that state meets moving, that's probably going to
- 3:10change some things. When you start talking about
- 3:11other things that your student athletes are involved in.
- 3:14Shelton, as you look at some of who obviously has the state meet
- 3:17circled on your calendar and working backwards, how does
- 3:20changing that state meet from what?
- 3:22And you tell us tell me if it's up or back, what's that going to
- 3:25do for training, what's that going to do for regionals,
- 3:27districts, etcetera? Yeah, that shift is going to be
- 3:31crazy, right? We're our coaches of habits.
- 3:34Any adjustment that we have to make is going to throw us off
- 3:37just a little bit. But I can tell you that as an
- 3:39individual who has one individual titles out of lane,
- 3:43one sort of like client forests have done, you can control what
- 3:47you can control and obviously the way that the coach go about
- 3:50it, the kids would go about it. So if you make it a big issue,
- 3:53the kids are making the big issues and things of that nature
- 3:55that will be affected most importantly.
- 3:59The communication is going to be that state meet is moving up a
- 4:02week, so it's no longer the second week may, right?
- 4:06That means the original meet is moving up a week, the area meet
- 4:09is moving up a week, the district meet is moving up the
- 4:12week. And the reason why this is the
- 4:14topic that I wanted to discuss is because if you guys are
- 4:16anything like me, you have prom and you have other activities
- 4:20that you got to be aware of and this is the conversation that
- 4:22you need to go back and have with your campus.
- 4:26Are they going to be able to move from this year in advance
- 4:28or this far out? Maybe they can, maybe they
- 4:30can't. But I can tell you if you're
- 4:32prepared for it, you can prepare your athletes for any obstacle
- 4:35that you might have on that weekend with the adjustments
- 4:37right? I've been in the region, in
- 4:40region 2IN Waco where we've had prom on the same weekend in Waco
- 4:45and the kids had to get back to Houston.
- 4:48And of course I was a male and a female coach at one point.
- 4:51More than likely the the ladies are going to choose prom over
- 4:54the state meet in some occasions and guys are faced with the
- 4:58opportunities. I had some D1 football players
- 5:01who wasn't going to run track and field at the next level and
- 5:04they chose to go to prom and not miss it.
- 5:08Versus running in the regional finals for Day 2.
- 5:11Luckily it has some alternates we didn't do as well in the
- 5:14finals as we could have did if we had those football guys.
- 5:17But this conversation is to make sure that you go back to your
- 5:21campus, look and see when the testing is following, when
- 5:24senior Skip day is following, when those activities and those
- 5:29prom activities and things of that nature is doing.
- 5:31That way you can be properly prepared for that championship
- 5:34season that you're going to be going through.
- 5:37So I'm hearing less training changes and more logistics.
- 5:41Yeah, that's the backside of it, right?
- 5:43You still got the front side of it, which is indoor season and
- 5:46which is going to be scratched into it, right.
- 5:48So indoor season is not going to change for the individuals that
- 5:51do one or two or three meets indoors, but it's moving up on
- 5:55the back end. So having a conversation, you
- 5:57know whether you want them to run one or two less indoor
- 6:00meets, whether you want to cut the volumes and the amount of
- 6:03events that they do indoor to keep them fresher.
- 6:06Here's the other thing that's going to be affected as Texas
- 6:08Relays, right? Texas Relays weekend is not
- 6:11going to change. You still have the big
- 6:13invitationals that most of us compete in, whether it's in the
- 6:16Dallas area and the Jesuits and the big Dallas meets that we
- 6:19have. All these things are on the
- 6:21table, the big invitations that should continue or begin to
- 6:24plan, our schedule that needs to be evaluated and needs to be
- 6:28looked at. I can tell you that in a Houston
- 6:30area, we do about 3 big invitations where there's TSU
- 6:33Relays, the Big Rice Invitationals, the Texas
- 6:36Invitationals, the the Texas Relays Invitationals.
- 6:40But I can tell you that Texas Relays is going to be extremely
- 6:43tough for the high school divisions.
- 6:46A lot of the OG coaches, I know they're not doing heavy volume
- 6:50at Texas Relays. They're going at their one or
- 6:52two events. But you're going to back door
- 6:55with that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of district
- 6:57prelims and finals, and you're going to run up against the
- 7:00obstacle. And you're going to be faced
- 7:01with the decision whether you want to risk it or whether
- 7:04you're going to look at the big picture and get ready for the
- 7:06first week of May, which is the state championship new date.
- 7:13I think the most important thing I heard you say there was take
- 7:16care. Take control of what you can
- 7:18control. There's things that are out of
- 7:19your hands and so we you can't change the date it's been
- 7:22changed. So act accordingly and start
- 7:25planning now. Don't get surprised when
- 7:27districts and regionals come around.
- 7:28Yeah. The good question that I'm
- 7:29getting, what does this look like for the future, like for
- 7:32next year, right, and which is 2024 and then 2025.
- 7:36So we don't know what 25 and 26 is going to hold if that date is
- 7:40going to move back to the second week.
- 7:41But I can tell you that our big focus is on 2024, making sure
- 7:45those athletes have the best position to be successful and we
- 7:49continue to do what we do at State Meet as a whole when it
- 7:52comes to this work. Awesome.
- 7:54You mentioned some with Proms and football players that maybe
- 7:58weren't running the next level. Let's turn our attention to
- 8:01recruiting, recruiting. You know, hopefully everyone
- 8:04here is a high school coach. You're working hard not
- 8:06necessarily to get your kids recruited into the next level,
- 8:09but getting your kids to the next level to go to school,
- 8:11right, whether it's a junior college program, any I a NCAA
- 8:14program. One of the things that has
- 8:16changed, it's been a few years now, but we're certainly maybe
- 8:19seeing more of the effect today than we did yesterday is the
- 8:23transfer. Portal How is that change the
- 8:26game for high school coaches and high school athletes being
- 8:29recruited to the next level? It's a game changer, right?
- 8:33It's a deaf sentence for some. There's a lot of people that's
- 8:35still in the portal having those conversations with the athletes.
- 8:40I think ultimately I come from Westbury High School in the
- 8:42foundation that we have was using our athletic scholarship
- 8:47as an opportunity to get an education and get a degree.
- 8:50We got to go back to that at some point where these athletes
- 8:52that want to run at the Olympics that that want to make make it
- 8:55to this high level and and reemphasize getting an education
- 8:59and getting a degree out of this whole equation, right?
- 9:01So if you can stay at this institution instead of getting
- 9:04in the portal, getting lost, that's huge, right?
- 9:08I can tell you every SEC and every Power 5 coach that I talk
- 9:11to when it comes to a high school prospect and going into
- 9:15the portal. They're going into the portal a
- 9:19lot more so I can get into the dynamics of it and the college
- 9:22coaches have incentives as far as how they do at championships.
- 9:26They get paid whether they finish in the top block and
- 9:29conference or top block at nationals and of course that's
- 9:32how they feed their families. So they're not in the the the
- 9:35equation of two or three-year projects out of high school
- 9:39athletes. I can tell you we've all coached
- 9:42elite athletes at the high school level at some point, and
- 9:45even them are having a hard time securing top aid, athletic aid
- 9:51and having a hard time adjusting for the first year.
- 9:54It used to be a time where the college coach would.
- 9:58Get them prepared in two years. But a lot of college coaches
- 10:01want to run 256, runner 2/23/23, or run these times and a lot
- 10:07sooner. So it's they want you to run
- 10:09fast now. They're not waiting for you to
- 10:11develop and contribute later. So earlier we talked about
- 10:15controlling the controllables and something that we as high
- 10:18school coaches can't control is how the college coach is going
- 10:22to recruit, what offer they're going to make, etcetera, right.
- 10:25So what are some of the things that we can do as high school
- 10:27coaches to prepare our athletes and our athletes, parents in
- 10:30regards to the recruiting process?
- 10:32We have to get rid of this D1 bust mentality, right?
- 10:37I mean, obviously it is keep. It sounds good.
- 10:39We're in the social media age where everybody's blasting
- 10:42things out, their commitments, their top.
- 10:44Things of that nature. I've had athletes that sit on
- 10:46offers and think that they're like Pokémon collecting things.
- 10:51We're not going to disappear and they're going to stay there.
- 10:54But as coaching Staffs changes, new coaches come in and those
- 10:57offers are still not good. Having those conversations, it's
- 11:03it's a tough situation and of course as coaches, our job is to
- 11:07get them in position to be reputable.
- 11:10I don't think many of us do anything as far as the decision
- 11:13making when it comes to what school they go to, but that
- 11:16transport portal is a game changer.
- 11:18I talk talk to a coach in the SEC that's cutting a 23 two
- 11:22young lady because 23 two does not score in the SEC.
- 11:27It takes a 22, seven to now make the finals in the SEC
- 11:31championships. And contribute and that only
- 11:33qualify for natural stuff. So if you're running 23, two out
- 11:36of high school, what do you what's your shot there?
- 11:39They're cutting them already. Yeah, that, that that wakes it
- 11:43up. That's why you need to open up
- 11:44your mind frame to division twos, division threes, Obviously
- 11:48having the kids emphasize taking care of business academically.
- 11:50That way they can get academic aid.
- 11:54It's changed the games when it comes to the big power fives,
- 11:57you got to be elite. And you got to be making some of
- 11:59those US under 20 teams and competing at a high level in
- 12:03order to get these offers. Now, I'm a former college coach
- 12:08myself and a lot of time and I coached high school as well.
- 12:12A lot of times we talked about you'll hear this quite often, as
- 12:14well as pick the school that even if the coach left, you
- 12:17would stay there and I see a lot of heads nodding, however.
- 12:22We see this quite often in the transfer Porter will where a
- 12:25coach will go on and guess what their jobs, right.
- 12:27So they're they're going to move on to wherever they think is
- 12:29better for them financially and their family.
- 12:31So how do we, what role can we as high school coaches play
- 12:34again during the advisement right Their parents are coming
- 12:36to you, the kids coming to you asking you for advice and your
- 12:39your experience. How can we help them.
- 12:44I'll say pick a school as far as like you know what schools your
- 12:46major location cost. Etcetera.
- 12:49Not just the this coaches here or this school plays on Saturday
- 12:52nights. You know, the football of
- 12:55picking schools. And at the Umbilizing in Summer
- 12:58Creek High School, we have one twice a year.
- 13:03We have the clearing house or the NCAA come out and talk in
- 13:07the district in May. We use that as an opportunity to
- 13:10also elaborate on kids creating toolbox, right and as you put
- 13:14new tools in your box. When it comes to recruiting,
- 13:17what questions you ask and then things that that's going to help
- 13:21you make your decision. That's by the way and having
- 13:23those meetings on your campuses which are coordinators and with
- 13:26your department overture sport is extremely important to help
- 13:29prepare the parent and prefer that young man or young woman
- 13:33even as a freshman sophomore and by the time they get to senior
- 13:35year been able to have all the pieces to make a decision all.
- 13:40Right. So last question on recruiting,
- 13:41because I know there's probably another hundred when we get to
- 13:43roaming around here. How do you talk about D1 or Bus?
- 13:46And you're right, I love it. It's cute.
- 13:48It's easy to say and all that kind of stuff.
- 13:50How do you balance the believing in yourself attitude, which is
- 13:54extremely important, versus yeah, you know you're 23, two
- 13:57and you're like, well, I should only go to an SEC school and
- 14:01it's like, well, maybe you're better suited for a major.
- 14:04D2 I mean, gosh, go look at championships for division two
- 14:07and Division Three. There's no joke themselves.
- 14:09So how do you balance this D1 or bust versus also believing in
- 14:11yourself mentality that I know you have as a as a coach?
- 14:15And it's a movement, right? We see that's happening in
- 14:17football and basketball where elite athletes are highly
- 14:20ranked. Athletes are going to HBC us and
- 14:22they're going to smaller universities just to get a
- 14:25better experience than to not be.
- 14:29What is it? A big fish and a big pond or
- 14:34just have that mentality, but just having that conversation
- 14:36and then preparing those athletes.
- 14:38I'm a I'm a big toolbox guy, making sure that they have the
- 14:42tools and the access to use those tools when it comes to
- 14:45making that decision, that parent, that support system in
- 14:47that athlete. That's awesome.
- 14:49I love it. With the amount of student loans
- 14:51and student loan debt, school ain't getting cheaper.
- 14:54I love coaches like you and coaches out here that are, you
- 14:57know, helping us see the big picture.
- 14:58You know, 99.9% of our kids are never going to go pro in our
- 15:02sport. So why don't we use it to our
- 15:05advantage to help pay for our education, which we will use for
- 15:0810/20/30 Forty. 50 years out there, so I appreciate.
- 15:11That, and this is the last thing on the topic.
- 15:13I spoke to a Power 5 coach and they said we're in the business
- 15:16of getting the athlete for the least amount of money possible.
- 15:19We're not in the business of giving giving money away, so
- 15:22we're not giving you money. We're trying to get you for at
- 15:25least as possible, whether it's tuitions.
- 15:28And then a couple $1000 or now they have NIL money that they
- 15:31can give you type situations, but obviously the the more they
- 15:33can spread, spread that out. And even Florida who's going
- 15:37into the portal and coach Holloway has done a great job of
- 15:39reloading and not rebuilding when it comes to that.
- 15:43He's not giving out 100%, he's giving out 85%, using that other
- 15:4715% to combine together in order to get another athlete.
- 15:52But they're making it up on the NIL side of things.
- 15:55Most important word you said there.
- 15:57Business is a business. They have a budget.
- 15:59That's exactly right. Well, let's move over to another
- 16:01part of business. When we had you on the podcast
- 16:03and again, I'd highly recommend if you want to learn his entire
- 16:06journey of how he got into coaching mentors along the way.
- 16:09I'm just so thankful you did join us on the podcast.
- 16:11It was a really good time and great to hear your whole story.
- 16:14There. We talked about some of the
- 16:16other leadership positions that you hold and TTFCA and some
- 16:20other things can you talk about. Things like TF, Here we are at
- 16:25the TFIGS, there's a CCAT. There's other places for us as
- 16:29coaches. We're extremely intelligent,
- 16:30hard working people that maybe hopefully care for our sport
- 16:33because we care for our athletes.
- 16:35What are some other leadership roles?
- 16:36What are some of your experiences?
- 16:38And maybe encourage some of us to maybe take a leap of faith
- 16:41and and help out and and volunteer at these positions?
- 16:43I consider track and field in cross country coaches some of
- 16:45the the brightest minds. We have to do a lot more with a
- 16:49lot less and we have to be so creative in the in the things
- 16:52and the task that we have to do. I can tell you, me and my peers,
- 16:55whether it's June or whether it's lean land, whether it's
- 16:58coach Kenny Harrison that's at Summer Creek High School, we
- 17:01didn't become better coaches until we start serving our
- 17:04associations. So not only being a part of
- 17:06associations, but I like to challenge everybody to be
- 17:09involved with the associations, whether it's getting on
- 17:11membership boards, being part of committees.
- 17:14And being part of the decisions when it's outset and done so a
- 17:18lot of those associations is going to go back to like UIL or
- 17:21the the executive committee to help make decisions.
- 17:24But in those leadership roles and when you serving your
- 17:27community or when you serving it, it changes your mind frame
- 17:30and it helps you with that evolution type situation.
- 17:33So to serve the track and field community, to serve the cross
- 17:36country community is a beautiful thing and it obviously helps you
- 17:39elevate do. You have an example of something
- 17:41that you were involved in that. Change for the good here in
- 17:45Texas high school track and field.
- 17:47Yeah, recently, right. Joseph Gorman, who's the
- 17:49assistant associate athletic director called me at the state
- 17:53meet because we were getting ready to have this intimate
- 17:55weather and they just saying that Shelton, I think we're
- 17:58going to have to go to a rolling schedule type situation.
- 18:01So if I wasn't involved with the association, I would have never
- 18:04got a heads up six hours before we made that decision to have a
- 18:07rolling schedule. At the six a state week and that
- 18:09ultimately allowed us to have a conversation with the executives
- 18:13with the the people that's sitting at the table that
- 18:16ultimately made the decisions to make a rolling schedule this
- 18:18past year due to the increment weather that we had.
- 18:21And whether you feel X way or that way about the decision that
- 18:25was made it ultimately I've been that individual that competed
- 18:28before by 4 at 12:30 at night due to a a running delay and
- 18:32it's it's it's not a beautiful thing and.
- 18:34And didn't happen to drop that late.
- 18:35So the decision made, I can tell you we've been a part of the
- 18:38committee me collaborating allow me to be in the loop and help
- 18:42advocate for the the the coaches that's here so.
- 18:46To another great words there, collaborate and advocate.
- 18:49Because I was going to ask you because I know you have been, I
- 18:52don't want to serious misspoke, speak and say leading the
- 18:54charge, but part of the conversation and representing.
- 18:58The coaches that you represent to the UIL regarding things like
- 19:01adding the four by eight, adding the javelin, things like that,
- 19:04can you talk about just what those mean and what your role is
- 19:08on those? Yeah, right.
- 19:10A lot of decisions that we need to make to continue the
- 19:12progress. Our sport has to be made
- 19:14collaboratively. All the association has got to
- 19:17be on the same page. We all got to have an interest
- 19:19in it and for individuals who don't have an interest in it and
- 19:24then some don't. It doesn't work like that.
- 19:26We all got to be on the same page.
- 19:28So just because you don't have a 300 hurdler and you don't want
- 19:30to make it in two 400 hurdles and you say you don't have a dog
- 19:33in a fight and you don't want to vote on it, that's a division
- 19:36that's not making it strong as far as numbers, even when it
- 19:38comes to the cross country decisions makes distance coaches
- 19:41have to be advocating for the Sprint side and some of the
- 19:44decisions that we like to make but scoring 8 places including
- 19:47the Japlin which is the Olympic event.
- 19:51There's been conversations about adding additional relay for the
- 19:54distance out of things. In order to make that happen,
- 19:56everybody have to have a decision and going back to your
- 20:00your principals or your athletic directors in order to advocate
- 20:03and let them know which side of the coin you own.
- 20:05As far as getting those things passed, I did a research.
- 20:10The last thing that we had passed and added was this the
- 20:13wheelchair division that we now have in UIL, we added the pole
- 20:18vault in 2002. And then obviously that allowed
- 20:21us to add the 2000 and O2 and then that allowed us to add the
- 20:25full by two. But we've got to continue to
- 20:28progress the sport. There's some things that we need
- 20:30to do as a whole, whether you can say prelims and finals or
- 20:33whether you can say adding simple trays, all these things.
- 20:36We have to be on the same page collectively as an association,
- 20:39as and as members in order to get past and be able to have a
- 20:43voice and go back to the UIO and get done.
- 20:46OK, it's time for me to start roaming while I get up though.
- 20:50Help us understand where are some opportunities?
- 20:53If someone says I want to get involved, I don't want to get
- 20:56involved right at the beginning at the top.
- 20:57What are some ways that people can maybe tiptoe into some of
- 21:00these different volunteer in association positions?
- 21:03Become a member. Not only you should be a member
- 21:05of the Texas High School Coaches Association, but everyone in
- 21:08here should be a member of TTFCA, which is the biggest
- 21:11track and field association in the state of Texas.
- 21:14And ultimately you'll come back to me, the president.
- 21:17My vice President is June Dillers.
- 21:19We'll have a conversation with our board and our committee and
- 21:22we'll advocate some of the things that you guys would like
- 21:24to get past and some of the changes you'll like to see.
- 21:29It's going to be interesting. We just saw National High School
- 21:31Federation just came out with the new things and multiple
- 21:34events. I don't want to see kids do six
- 21:36events on the track or anything like that.
- 21:38But a lot of these things that we can advocate for you you join
- 21:41these boards, these organizations in order to get.
- 21:44Some movement happening all. Right now, we're done with the
- 21:48scripted questions. Now we have no idea what's going
- 21:50to happen. Can I get us?
- 21:5130 minutes, Coach, I hope you're ready.
- 21:53I told him I allowed him. It was very hard to get him to
- 21:56sit down for 22 minutes. I'm proud of you.
- 21:58Have a great job. I've expected you to get up and
- 22:00start roaming here. And we're going to start with
- 22:02our first question right here with Coach Cruz.
- 22:06Coach Cruz was in. Hospital Break the Listen to
- 22:09your talks in the past couple years.
- 22:12We started having some great success last year as we
- 22:14rebuilded our boys program and our grave program, but our
- 22:17biggest issue last year was having multi sport athletes.
- 22:20We had guys and girls that played softball, they played
- 22:24baseball but they also did club sports.
- 22:27How one of the hardest things for us was actually building
- 22:31their actual workout schedule to be able to accommodate all of
- 22:34the sports. What's the best advice here?
- 22:37The models you already use is already in place at the small
- 22:39school. The small divisions, the 3-4
- 22:41eights and six, four eights are already doing it right for the
- 22:45five days and six days. We take that and tweak it in
- 22:47order to make that format and work it.
- 22:52It all boils down to invent a culture at on your campus, and
- 22:55that comes from the campus coordinator where it's your
- 22:57football culture, where it's your secondary campus
- 22:59coordinator on how that philosophy is and what's the
- 23:02expectation is. When it comes to that, from our
- 23:05bottom, from our top down is the expectation that we do whatever
- 23:09possible to make sure that athletes work out.
- 23:12We have a soccer player who's a stud.
- 23:14So Hunter Spencer who's like scoring 5-6 goes she's a soccer
- 23:19slash track and field athlete and the situation is she
- 23:21practiced several days a week or she'll practice during the
- 23:24athletic period and then after the athletic period she'll go to
- 23:27soccer type situation but getting the both coaches.
- 23:31And not going to the athlete, both coaches and and the parents
- 23:35together and coming up with a schedule that works for both of
- 23:37them. I've had baseball athletes.
- 23:39Baseball has some speed in baseball that's untapped that we
- 23:42don't know about. And and I've had a baseball guy
- 23:46come out and contribute and run fast.
- 23:48And of course he's running like this because this is how you run
- 23:51that on first base, right? Baseball players, they're not
- 23:53doing track for him. But still making it work and
- 23:55making what's best for the athletes is is the ultimate goal
- 23:58campus coordinator in the culture.
- 24:00Now we got another coach from the same school, Seguin, so
- 24:02don't let Seguin. Just don't run this thing.
- 24:05Help me out and raise your hand and I'll come to you while
- 24:07they're answering the question. Here we have coach Palmaris.
- 24:09From Seguin High School. Hello Coach Eric Brett, Palmar
- 24:21Seguin High School. Again, thank you for your time.
- 24:25I've not admire your code that few years even though I just sat
- 24:29there. At least from what I've seen in
- 24:31my 365 days of coaching, there's also like this, this.
- 24:36Varsity or bust? Mentality.
- 24:38So my question is how do you go about encouraging your your
- 24:41sophomores, your junior on JV to continue to develop so that the
- 24:45next year or their senior whatever they're called to
- 24:49contribute to the team. What do you do whether it's
- 24:51workout wise, motivation, wise, coach, wise, personal,
- 24:54personalized, what do you do to kind of keep those kids coming
- 24:57back and. Passing the way they should be
- 24:59passing and continuing to. Compete A lot of questions,
- 25:02right? I can tell you how how it works
- 25:10on our campus. The expectation hasn't changed
- 25:13when it comes to the coaching staff.
- 25:15So it it goes, it starts there. You you have to create a system
- 25:21where those athletes going to be successful and where they can be
- 25:24thriving and develop. What was what are your other
- 25:29part of the questions the big six day programs have?
- 25:40The next man or next woman of mentality right?
- 25:43You're not held hostage by elite athlete or you're not held
- 25:47hostage by a talented athlete giving everybody and developing
- 25:51everybody. I know coaches that only coach
- 25:53varsity athletes and don't coach sub varsity athletes.
- 25:56I can tell you in the big programs.
- 25:58We work with our athletes where this are ones that's trying to
- 26:01walk and chew gum at the same time and bringing them along
- 26:04versus our elite athletes type situation.
- 26:07So setting up a system where everybody's developed, having
- 26:10that next man up mentality, having the assessments and then
- 26:14in place we do a pentacle on testing twice a year that also
- 26:18measures and create data that helps us contribute and help us.
- 26:23If the weight group program is working, apply mentions of
- 26:25whether the athlete is getting bigger, faster and stronger.
- 26:31It's it's just creating a system is is the ultimate goal for you
- 26:35all. Right, Coach.
- 26:36Break it up here up front to Coach Day.
- 26:42How you doing coach? How much day?
- 26:43Come on now speak a word. First of all.
- 26:46You gonna go? Let's start with that.
- 26:49Yeah, Y'all give him a hand. Yes I can.
- 26:54So the question that I have for you has been on a different side
- 26:57of things now for me, coming out of coaching and kind of going as
- 27:00admin, what do you guys heard? You use the word systems, which
- 27:04I think is huge, but what do you do, What systems do you create
- 27:07to help your coaches who are not wake up, roll out the bed, eat,
- 27:12drink, breathe, track and field? But our second support coach,
- 27:15what systems do you put in place for those coaches to be
- 27:18successful with adding value to your program?
- 27:23That's a great question. Basketball.
- 27:25That's a great question. I talked to Coach Roper and I
- 27:26talked to a couple of people about it.
- 27:28We created a system, We created a program, and it's the cultural
- 27:30ultimate on my campus that you can plug someone in that's never
- 27:33coached, ever met before, have them elevate to our level that
- 27:38we're operating at as a program. I had a distance coach this year
- 27:41who coached distance for the first time ever and took a guy
- 27:44from 146 to one 9193 in the distance.
- 27:50And you would have never known that.
- 27:51He's never coached the district before prior to this year.
- 27:56But he coached this guy to a civil medal and then state meet.
- 27:59We wasn't worried about plugging him in and catching up.
- 28:02He has an extremely hard working ethic ethic.
- 28:04He wants to ultimately contribute and win a ring for
- 28:08for our organization, but it's ultimately coaching schools.
- 28:12We was at coaching school in in January, so I fed him the
- 28:15resources that he needs. So I gave him every tool.
- 28:18By giving them every tool that they may need to help contribute
- 28:21like the indoor portal, portal, circle type situation.
- 28:24That way we can continue to throw indoors the indoor shots
- 28:28or even what is the the throw balls, the weighted balls that
- 28:33we used to throw in that since I think every tool that he needed,
- 28:36I made sure that he had as a resource to help him develop
- 28:39instead of this, hey this is what you have maybe work develop
- 28:42this app and so giving them that how many head coaches are in
- 28:47here? I love it.
- 28:50I make it an emphasis to finish up practice about 10 or 15
- 28:52minutes early and walk around and see my Filipent area.
- 28:55So a lot of things are not a shock because I go over there
- 28:58and watch the throwers finishing up their reps.
- 29:01I would go over there and see the pole vaults getting in the
- 29:03air and of course they want to continue to get up in the air.
- 29:05You got to shut down practice with them.
- 29:07But wrapping up and have your assistant coaches do the cool
- 29:10down or the abs or the last part of the circuit and getting
- 29:13around to see those other areas and support them so when they do
- 29:16add the need. And they like coach.
- 29:18I took them one night and like I'm not shocked that's how you
- 29:20in practice, you just sling that thing type of situation.
- 29:23But having that creating that system and getting them to go
- 29:26around and support those athletes and they just shrunk
- 29:29the huge. If they multiple sport athletes
- 29:32having that that volleyball coach or that baseball coach or
- 29:35that football coach come out and support them.
- 29:37They're not doing it for me. They're doing it to impress that
- 29:39football coach because that guy is a defensive lineman that's
- 29:42already recruited and he's, he knows this is helping them in
- 29:46the off season. That situation.
- 29:50Every one of our speakers this weekend, their number one goal
- 29:52is to bring you value. And certainly I know that's
- 29:55Coach Irving's goal here today. So if you think of these
- 29:57questions and just give me a wave as we as I move along with
- 30:01the question, we'll come right to you.
- 30:02We got one right here, Coach. Hey.
- 30:05Coach, are you? Hey, Coach.
- 30:07So I'm Coach Christopher from Claire Spirits High School head,
- 30:10cross country, track and field coach.
- 30:12And my question for you is, how do you go about teaching mental
- 30:15tenacity and fortitude as a coach?
- 30:19Sometimes you just want your athlete to be like you and just
- 30:21like go out there and do it. And then some of them are a
- 30:23little bit more timid in their mindset.
- 30:25So just give them to that place where they're able to block out
- 30:27external factors and you know. Just push the limits.
- 30:31Coach Christopher was a distance coach for us at Summer Creek
- 30:34High School that recently got their head job and I remember
- 30:38coming to me and say I need you to Coach Powell.
- 30:43She's coached several district champions sits in and several
- 30:46kids that to the regionals finals.
- 30:49She took it over. She went to the resources, she
- 30:51she did the educations and things of that nature.
- 30:53So one of the things I've talked to Mike about is by putting
- 30:56herself in the box, you're not just a distance coach, you're
- 30:59not just a Sprint coach, you're a track and field coach, field
- 31:02and track coach, right. So you don't put yourself in the
- 31:05box that you can't learn things. We're we're pretty brilliant.
- 31:07We can pick up things. We can put things together and
- 31:10we can obviously have success on it.
- 31:13I can tell you when it comes to the 5A and 6A programs, I can
- 31:16speak on, you can win with good kids, but you need some kids
- 31:21with some dog in them if you want to take it and then be.
- 31:24But am I am I lying? So I had that point and I I
- 31:28called it going from good to great, which is a book that I
- 31:30read. We had a lot of good kids.
- 31:33They were good kids. But I'm like, man, we got to get
- 31:35over this hump. You need great kids.
- 31:37So put him in in in positions of adversity creating those
- 31:42simulated adversity simulations and I'm huge on simulations and
- 31:47and stress creating control stress situations in order to
- 31:52create the dog and fire them. So one of the most, one of one
- 31:58of the most productive tools that you can do when it comes to
- 32:00that is the 45 and 52nd runs and tell them I want you to go to
- 32:05the point where you locked up. Go, just go and having them not
- 32:10be scared of. I'm I'm saving, right?
- 32:14Ramon Smith said. The only thing that goes good
- 32:16with French fries, the only thing that goes good with
- 32:18ketchup, is French fries. So you can't jog out.
- 32:21You can't play around at the beginning.
- 32:23You can't float the back stretch and think that you're going to
- 32:26roll and catch somebody. You got to go and you can't be
- 32:29scared to lock up and figuring out how to stay open and stay
- 32:33pumping. When you locked up is is is a
- 32:36skill set that has to be simulated, right?
- 32:39You can't, you can't do it if it's not simulated.
- 32:42Otherwise the only opportunity to get simulated is in races
- 32:45which is once a week or blah blah blah.
- 32:47So I do a great job of simulations in order to get to
- 32:50that lock up that body lock and and of course as a advance from
- 32:54let's say a 35 second run in our season to 52nd runs in in the
- 32:57end seasons or even Darius ringing that did five hundreds
- 33:01and coming through. The 49 type situation, you got
- 33:04to simulate that in practice in order to create that tenacity in
- 33:07that dog, even two 50s at the University of Houston, we need
- 33:11two out loud, two hundreds with a rolling start, a 5 meter, 5
- 33:16meter rolling start. Would you just hit it?
- 33:18And then obviously 10 to 15 minutes rest type situation
- 33:22didn't hit another fast 200. But all that simulation and all
- 33:25that things should be in a controlled environment just like
- 33:28it would with a polo, right? I can put the the standard of
- 33:31the 18 feet and say I need your your feet to to knock off the
- 33:34bar. That's also me teaching them hip
- 33:36hype type situation. I'm I'm creating a simulated
- 33:39environment in order to get that that stressor out and get that
- 33:42that scared and then try to create that tenacity in that dog
- 33:46that you might need in half and so let's.
- 33:50See right here with Coach Wilson.
- 33:53How you doing, coach? Coach Tracy Wilson.
- 33:55I'm a little bit Marshall girls program.
- 33:58I wanted to ask you a question. What first.
- 34:01What I most admire about you is your throwing program, both boys
- 34:04and girls. And what I wanted to know was
- 34:09what I want to know is how do you?
- 34:12I don't get my girls until about sophomore junior years because
- 34:17we're smaller school, but it's volleyball, Everything is
- 34:20important. And then I'll just come on out,
- 34:22come throw with me, and I have two or three years to get my my
- 34:25girls ready. To start throwing.
- 34:27But by that time you know you got to be throwing 140 or what,
- 34:31Not by that time, but on your boys side, I don't get them
- 34:34until they're already. I don't think I'm going to make
- 34:38it in football. I got to do something else.
- 34:40How do you maintain that consistency throughout the years
- 34:45and how do you develop those kids to the point of more
- 34:48success as you have done so far? When you have guys throwing, as
- 34:52far as we do in practice and the training, is, is, is.
- 34:55Sorry coach. What he had like 1620 guys over
- 34:59there at the Disk type situation.
- 35:00So it's a numbers game when it comes to the 6A level.
- 35:03So we have huge numbers and our football coach does a great job
- 35:06of pushing our throwers out. And the same thing when it comes
- 35:09to that that girls coaching, creating that relationship with
- 35:11the volleyball players or the basketball players prior to that
- 35:15season in order to get the income out type situation.
- 35:18But whether it's the strip program we do, I call it, we do
- 35:22a lot of teaching. Right.
- 35:24We do more teaching than we do the coaching.
- 35:25So I think Coach Rios probably don't get the coaching to maybe
- 35:29that that last part of the area, regional district.
- 35:32Everything else we doing teaching, we doing fundamentals,
- 35:34we doing drills, we doing plyometrics.
- 35:37We don't have to develop the total athlete type situation,
- 35:40but we make it fun for them also.
- 35:44It's not stressful. We kind of go over, we have
- 35:47great relationships with that kids and I think.
- 35:50When I had Coach Rodriguez, Stroll Rodriguez, he used to
- 35:52bring in peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches.
- 35:54Coach Thomas feeds them McDonald's.
- 35:58So it's creating that relationship with those
- 35:59throwers, those those individuals who I consider some
- 36:02of the hardest working individuals in the track and
- 36:06field program, those throwers. What they do is pretty amazing
- 36:10and obviously there's a lot of stress on the bottom and
- 36:12explication when you're doing 2 throwing events.
- 36:14They their work ethic is this. If you ever get to finish up
- 36:17your practice and go around and see them throw it and work in a
- 36:20real throwing system, it's a beautiful sight to see them get
- 36:24after that type situation. What is your young ones all the
- 36:26way to this year? Advanced athletes you're.
- 36:29Probably not going to know this next person for a question, but
- 36:32I'll introduce to you after OK. Track coach, Cross country coach
- 36:40at Westbury High School. How many years have you been
- 36:42coaching? 40 or 90 years.
- 36:57He would say that he has Gray hair on his toes, ordered.
- 37:00And some of us. My question is, due to the fact
- 37:07that a lot of you guys have things that we don't have, I
- 37:11have no pole vault place to put practice pole vault.
- 37:14I got 2 jump hits, have hurdles, but I have three coaches.
- 37:20So and under this estimation, what would you think to do if
- 37:24that's all you had to work with and how would you divide the
- 37:27time to create everything so that you got a good balance of
- 37:30cost to that spectrum? That's what we do.
- 37:33So you understand what I'm talking about, you know where
- 37:35I'm. Coming I absolutely do.
- 37:37As HISD products, I definitely do.
- 37:38That's my high school coach Andrew Blake.
- 37:40So. He's coached the the the last
- 37:48two guys that win the 6A title climb course in some Greek high
- 37:52school is came from the coach of blanks coaching tree.
- 37:55I can tell you when it comes to developing out league if you're
- 37:58going to consider yourself and not develop full events in this
- 38:01day and age whether it's on the girls side and so forth was
- 38:04killing it and and not just on the track.
- 38:06A lot of people's noticed their fast times but they had full
- 38:08inventors throwers and jumpers also developing that total
- 38:12program is is a must. Here's what I I tell people
- 38:17Marshall, Summer Creek High School, Manville, The Woodlands
- 38:19don't care that you don't have the resources.
- 38:22They don't care about the excuses that you that you might
- 38:24come up with. You got to figure out a way to
- 38:26get it done, whether it's providing a middle school or
- 38:30going to another track or or figuring out a system.
- 38:34That way you can develop that athletes at the end of the day
- 38:36the athlete needs to get that training and if you're going to
- 38:39meet with the the big schools in in this state.
- 38:42You got to figure out a way to get it done When it comes to
- 38:45developing a lot of those other fill events, staggering
- 38:48practice, obviously it means a little bit more.
- 38:51I consider myself unique because I coach everything on the track.
- 38:53Besides the 110 hurdles. A lot of people say you're
- 38:56crazy, right? So I coach from the four by the
- 38:58one, the 3200 at the beginning all the way through the four by
- 39:004:00. But it's I figure out the
- 39:02system, how to get it done. I'm coaching the whole time.
- 39:06One of my my twin brothers. Does the hurdles and then sit
- 39:09back and watch me stress at the two hurdle events.
- 39:14But figuring out the system and getting done and at at some
- 39:16point delegating it and and moving it on to something.
- 39:19So it's a way to figure it out. There's always a way to get it
- 39:23done and then figure it out. We got a parking lot proof in
- 39:26the task to see that it does a great job of figuring things out
- 39:28too using different tools and resources.
- 39:30We're. Going to go right up here in
- 39:33front. Hey everybody, my name is Coach
- 39:35Jackson. I'm a head track coach at.
- 39:37Hempstead 3 days small, but we did.
- 39:41I'm a young coach and I just wanted to know what are some key
- 39:44things that you really felt like majors program, successful
- 39:47things that you are like this. What you need to have in your
- 39:50program for it to be great mentors.
- 39:54You got to have mentors. I call them OG's.
- 39:56OG's that I can call and bump us.
- 39:59I say, hey Ramon, tell me I'm not crazy.
- 40:01This kid, this kid want to do XY&Z.
- 40:04Tell me what you did just to make sure.
- 40:05So creating that network of OG's or individuals that you can
- 40:08contact and you can bounce things off of obviously
- 40:12continuing your coaching education.
- 40:14One of the great books that I read was from Good to great.
- 40:19What is it, Steve? Steve Magnus has a great book
- 40:22also that's out. And then obviously Carl Lewis
- 40:24that signed to speed. As another great book out.
- 40:27But creating that network, that network when it comes to
- 40:31coaching and then developing yourself, creating that that
- 40:34culture inside your campus which you can control.
- 40:37And then ultimately any young coach out here that doesn't have
- 40:40a master's degree, I'll embark you to get that master's degree.
- 40:45That leadership quality and that administration experience that
- 40:48you get helps you as a coach also.
- 40:51And not just if you want to go into that, but when I receive my
- 40:54master's. I took all those leadership
- 40:57classes I get out of those simulations and those
- 40:59assignments and those projects and it also help you involved
- 41:01and get a better perspective to be in the lead so you can get a
- 41:06masters and then gain some of that leadership quality and gain
- 41:08some of that experience that allow you to deal with a lot,
- 41:11right. Have a psychology degree too.
- 41:14So I think it should be mandatory that we all have
- 41:16psychology degrees and we're dealing with some stuff these
- 41:19days. So I use my psychology degree
- 41:22more than any degree. Nowadays.
- 41:25It's mandatory that you are in psychology.
- 41:27You should be a psychologist. You coach down there, so.
- 41:30Let's stay right up here in front of the coach, full listen.
- 41:34Coach Allison here from Colorado City, TX.
- 41:36Too late, Coach, How do you deal with the seven on seven and a
- 41:40basketball? Kids, I feel like we lose a lot
- 41:45of our kids to football. Seven on seven and a basketball.
- 41:51I've seen a lot of the Fort Bend schools, I've seen a lot of the
- 41:54schools in general and my luckily I'm in a position where
- 41:57my my my program at the 6A level, we don't deal with it as
- 42:00much. The kids will choose track and
- 42:01field, but a lot of them have moved to Fridays and Thursday
- 42:04meets in order to avoid the conflict for that Thursday.
- 42:07I don't tell a kid that can't go to an A U event take situation
- 42:11unless it's a championship season.
- 42:12We had a a guy that came out out of basketball first year every
- 42:16doing track and field and then he was still in a U and club.
- 42:19Things of that nature and he ended up jumping 22 feet in the
- 42:22six four and in the in the high jump type situation and never
- 42:25wants to tell him to stop playing basketball or anything
- 42:28like that. So control what you control when
- 42:31you have that kid develop that kid make sure he's getting his
- 42:34preventative treatment in order to make sure that he or she is
- 42:37fresh We're being on preventative treatment and and
- 42:40and whether it's the thorough or thorough or whether it's a
- 42:43massage and Ramon put us on the the normal text.
- 42:48To flush out the lens and things of that nature.
- 42:50So control what you control. When you get that kid, develop
- 42:53them, he or she, and then go from there.
- 42:57I I love it when they don't make me go very far.
- 42:59We're going to go to. Trouble Ginger Kerman and Jostle
- 43:02high school. I didn't tell the importance of
- 43:05track and field to your football coach and your baseball and
- 43:08girls basketball and your boys basketball coach.
- 43:11Because a lot of kids look at track is like a second sport.
- 43:13It's not the main thing with your sprinters and your power
- 43:16athletes. You should come out of the
- 43:18sport. So how do you make it important?
- 43:20How do you sell importance to your other?
- 43:21Location and assistant coaches, you have to start there.
- 43:24So as a leader on that campus like kid Greg has a meeting and
- 43:29he makes it known that if anybody that's treating your
- 43:31secondary sport like a secondary sport, then you won't be on our
- 43:34staff for long. So setting the expectation and
- 43:37those coaches going to reciprocate that because there
- 43:39are no individuals that's working with those athletes
- 43:41ultimately. But when it all boils down into
- 43:44it, that jade that's on your chest.
- 43:46Everybody on that campus should be doing it for their journey
- 43:49period. So just like we do it for the
- 43:52SCE on our chest, whether it's basketball, football.
- 43:55I talked to Greg Williams and I said there's not a star athlete
- 43:58that can walk through the hallways and Ken rehabs and
- 44:00don't speak to me. Whether it's a volleyball
- 44:02player, whether it's a soccer player or whether it's us in
- 44:05general, every player that that's an athlete on our campus,
- 44:07we can dab up great jobs going to go last night.
- 44:10Basketball players. Kenneth Coleman will stop there.
- 44:14It's raining every time, man. You're going to give me a 45
- 44:16minutes. So it's creating a culture where
- 44:19those star athletes that's representing those letters on
- 44:22your chest. Every coach on that campus
- 44:24should be speaking high fiving, congratulating, telling good
- 44:28job, telling them good luck that coaching, that that on that
- 44:31campus should be thriving where those kids are leaving like that
- 44:35and that coach tell you to come with it.
- 44:37And we, we have a mass group text on our campus where every
- 44:42time there's a playoffs, every time there's a success or where
- 44:45our coach win and things of that nature, we congratulate, we
- 44:48blast it out. We big up everybody in our
- 44:50culture. Because everybody's representing
- 44:53that brand that's on your chest. And you know how I'm deep
- 44:56rooted? I grew up in Jasper, TX.
- 44:57So that J in your chest has a lot of history, a lot of
- 45:00history. First team in high school to go,
- 45:0239 seconds and the four by one. Yeah.
- 45:06Weather spoken was weather spoken postponed.
- 45:09You guys are asking some great questions.
- 45:11Are you guys enjoying the answers?
- 45:12Yeah, let's keep it going. I always like to get a shout out
- 45:15again to anybody who's been on the podcast.
- 45:17So our next question asked her here.
- 45:19The teacher, Stuart Haynes is also a Guil podcast alum.
- 45:22So if you want to know more about her journey again, go
- 45:24check it out. No pressure is better.
- 45:25Be a good question. So I actually had two questions.
- 45:32So my first question was how do you go about?
- 45:36You're around planning for your Sprint program, so like you
- 45:40said, planning backwards as far as your offseason and then
- 45:44preseason, championship season. How do you go about planning
- 45:48that? And also in your program you
- 45:50have very elite hurdlers. How do you go about utilizing
- 45:55them as far as like open flat races and relays as well?
- 46:00And I can touch on that because we develop a lot of our hurdles
- 46:03and we like to get ready when these kids just running fast in
- 46:05middle school and things of that nature.
- 46:07Barry Richardson won state with a 13323 years ago, never ran
- 46:12middle school track type situation.
- 46:14Aaron Davis, Donovan Bradley who just finished up with us, that's
- 46:18at Cal. He wasn't a hurdle in middle
- 46:21school. So Lord does a great job of
- 46:23taking hurdlers and converting them and obviously coaching them
- 46:26up and getting tools and resources.
- 46:28We're big on speed. Scientifically, we know that
- 46:32Hurdler's got to have good speed.
- 46:34So it's basically taking some of the good morning form and good
- 46:37speed and teaching them how to hurdle type situations when it
- 46:41comes to developing that total program and then starting from
- 46:45you know the state media and the beginning and so.
- 46:48Setting that expectation when you come there in August, August
- 46:51and and then going around and seeing that that that record
- 46:54board type situation where the record board is ultimately
- 46:57somewhere they like to put it. We put our record board where
- 46:59they walk wide every day, type situation where they want to be
- 47:03up there in type situation. We that strictly conditioning
- 47:06program, that applied metric program that pentathlon which
- 47:10was developed by Mark Majucotti while I was at the University of
- 47:13Houston which is five different events.
- 47:16The flying 30, the standing long jump, the standing triple jump,
- 47:19the underhand front throw in the 35 second run and that
- 47:23ultimately help us identify different individuals.
- 47:26Aaron Davis jumped 25 four in one state two years ago at the
- 47:30state meet and he was identified by the pentathlon because he did
- 47:34had a great standing long jump. So he placed the one state as a
- 47:39senior and only jumping for one year total but having all those
- 47:43tools in place to. Assess.
- 47:45It also gives me a reason of why if a parent want to come to me
- 47:48and that's my my kid is a sprinter, why she's not running
- 47:51well due to the tap when I'm testing your kid is down here in
- 47:54the flying 30 and the steady alone jump let alone out of the
- 47:57other things. So it's also assessment tool
- 47:59that I used to utilize. But the next year I can measure
- 48:04the growth of those athletes and then ultimately when it comes
- 48:06into the the season and I had this conversation with Coach
- 48:10Shannon is putting those athletes in position where they
- 48:13can be successful. And and not putting those kids
- 48:15in the box, running them up and down the ladder where you need
- 48:19to and not being redundant. Having them run the same thing
- 48:21every week and if you don't want to run them for a week, don't
- 48:23run them that week. Nothing says that we have to run
- 48:268 meets, we have to run this week and that meet.
- 48:29So if you want to sit the kid out and train through it then
- 48:31you have to do it So ultimately collision athletes only run
- 48:34cross country wise three or four meets track and field wise maybe
- 48:385 meets before they get into conference regionals and then
- 48:41nationals. Only in high school do we feel
- 48:43we have to run 20 different times in order for them to do
- 48:46itself. I can tell you I feel like and I
- 48:48just have to talk to coach about it.
- 48:50District area regionals is enough assessment or enough
- 48:54opportunity for me to get that kid ready to run fast and be
- 48:57successful at the regional I mean.
- 48:59You mentioned little Herb. That's your twin brother.
- 49:02My evil twin brother. Here's a real question, Coach
- 49:06Rover, thank. You very much.
- 49:10Poster Coast Rose was at Elkins High School going to North
- 49:13Shore. My cousin runs Wait wait, you're
- 49:15going to North Shore side? Yeah, you're going to Michigan?
- 49:20Yeah, I I thought my cousin runs for you.
- 49:22Brook Lloyd. Oh, yes.
- 49:24Brook Lloyd was a freshman that went 5403 as a girl at the state
- 49:28meet. This year as a freshman.
- 49:30Freshman girl going 54. Oh, our daddy is 5545 quarter
- 49:34mile at TSU and his mom was in 22/6.
- 49:38Sprinter while at TSU. So my question for you though is
- 49:44about private coaches, kids having a private coach and then
- 49:51you trying to deal with having them want to go to the private
- 49:54coach and also want to work with you.
- 49:56And my followup question is private coaches have to track me
- 49:59trying to coach the kids. I know right that he's this
- 50:02putting them on payroll, right? I can tell you I'm from the
- 50:05Jewel Village school of this. When it comes in, I set
- 50:08boundaries. You got to create boundaries and
- 50:11everybody has a lane that they have to operate in.
- 50:13When it comes to private coaches, right, I don't mess
- 50:16with them during the summer. You should mess with them during
- 50:18my season. And of course it's having those
- 50:20conversations and they they're always going to the test you
- 50:24that situation. I can tell you setting the
- 50:28expectation at your parent meeting with how that looks
- 50:30during the season. You can't control everything,
- 50:33right? You can't.
- 50:34You don't know what. You're driving me some crazy
- 50:36trying to see if they're doing this and that on Saturday and
- 50:38Sunday when they're outside of your window.
- 50:40But they should not be missing your training, your practices
- 50:43for private coaches. And I say that because you could
- 50:47work something out type situation and we we had
- 50:49situations where we worked something out, whereas a coach
- 50:52wasn't coming out that day type situation, creating those
- 50:54boundaries, having those conversations, setting the
- 50:57expectations, It's boundaries are okay to be the bad woman or
- 51:01bad guys is okay. But ultimately they have to give
- 51:04you an opportunity to do it. And you know we're from a
- 51:07program that ultimately if you don't you got to be willing to
- 51:10part way with your best athlete if they're not on board and and
- 51:13that's something where you can do.
- 51:14But if you don't set those boundaries and you allow someone
- 51:17to come in and control your program and dictate what they're
- 51:20going to run and what they're not going to run.
- 51:21I can tell you at Manville Kennedy Crum didn't play that
- 51:26those his boys type situation during that season in the same
- 51:30way for us. Summer pre, Marshall, Crime
- 51:33Force, DeSoto, Duncanville, we all set the expectation of
- 51:37whatever it looks like when it comes to private coaches,
- 51:39personal coaches, parents, things of that nature.
- 51:42So. That's ongoing.
- 51:46So, yeah. Yeah.
- 51:48We could do a whole hour just on that.
- 51:50Yeah, all. Right, all good things must come
- 51:52to an end, so we're going to try to do 2 more questions.
- 51:54I have one right here. So once she asks her question,
- 51:56who's ever got the fire? Last question to wrap us up?
- 51:59Raise that hand. We got one right here from Coach
- 52:01Jones. Hello, I'm Coach Jones from
- 52:04Manor High School. I actually have two questions.
- 52:07So one, you said that one you said like you talked about your
- 52:13strength program. We do you not have a strict and
- 52:16conditioning coach, so do you write your own visiting?
- 52:19Program. Yes, he was the strict and
- 52:20conditioning coach you are. That's exactly what I've been.
- 52:25No, you. Are, yeah.
- 52:26At any day. We all have seen speeches from
- 52:29booth booth, snatch specialist, snatch, signer type situation.
- 52:34We have the tools. I can tell you how the the
- 52:36shrimp and conditioning programs is out there.
- 52:38Even my correlation and my collaboration with the football
- 52:41program with their lift days and then the track and field
- 52:44workouts and I sit down with German justice who is not strict
- 52:47and conditioning coach. Or I go to coach Harrison and
- 52:50say hey these guys getting ready for the district of Regional
- 52:52means I need them and he'll sit them out or he have them spot.
- 52:56But ultimately having the bar moving fast, having good reps,
- 53:00building strength, building pod metrics.
- 53:03Which is that ground contact type situation, whether it's a
- 53:06EM having it or whether it's doing an athletic period or
- 53:09whether it's at the school. You can't compete at a high
- 53:12level if you don't have a solid, strict and conditioning program
- 53:15in Texas. I mean this the boys here, yeah
- 53:19you you can't get there without a solid, strict and conditioning
- 53:22program. This is impossible.
- 53:23So. And at least to my next
- 53:25question, and so we're a small 6A, but whatever, we do not have
- 53:30an athletic period for our track class and our track kids are not
- 53:38allowed to be in the athletic period.
- 53:40So when it comes to like, I've had this crazy schedule for a
- 53:44couple of years now. Just doing weights and working
- 53:46the girls out, but now I'm trying to do working the girls
- 53:49out in the morning and then weights out their school.
- 53:52Like how would you go about that not having that time and.
- 53:56That it's creating that system right there.
- 53:58Everything you can control. You'll probably get that
- 53:59administrative leader or that athletic director at some point
- 54:03that see the value in athletic, direct athletic periods and then
- 54:07they are also returning to the corner type situation where
- 54:09they. To advocate for that, that
- 54:11district, to have one at some point.
- 54:13But at the end of the day, I'm getting the same conversation
- 54:15that I gave my my coach, who I'm going to start me too many
- 54:20movement because he used to hit me in high school.
- 54:24But nobody cares about your excuses of what you can't and
- 54:27cannot and can't do. You got to get it done.
- 54:29So nobody's going to take it easy on you just because you
- 54:31don't have this and that. At the end of the day, you got
- 54:33to get it done and it's the only way to operate if you're going
- 54:36to compete at the high level. We're going to be respectful.
- 54:39We do have an 11:00 o'clock session.
- 54:40So we got our last question right here real quick.
- 54:43Before we ask this question, I just got to give a shout out.
- 54:45I talk about Twitter for me, Make sure you're on Twitter.
- 54:48He's got the first, He's got the greatest handle.
- 54:50There is Angry Half Miler, so make sure you're following Angry
- 54:53Half Miler. Here we go.
- 54:55He promised me this is going to be a great question.
- 54:56I did a little preview. I think it's going to be a good
- 54:58one for us to end here. Coach safety.
- 55:01Good morning. My name is Coach Sapient.
- 55:02I'm from El Paso East Lake. I'm the throwing coach over
- 55:05there at El Paso East Lake. My question one, my question was
- 55:09earlier I heard you say that we wanted to expand our sport by
- 55:12adding all these different events and I'm a big very big
- 55:14advocate of my throwing events and my kids are big fans of shop
- 55:18put in discus, but I've also introduced it to javelin to.
- 55:21Hammer and in our summer. Track program.
- 55:23I've introduced the basic fundamentals.
- 55:25Of javelin and Hammer to our to our kids in our area.
- 55:28So my question is, is how likely do you think we're going to see
- 55:31the events slowly start creeping up to UI competition for javelin
- 55:35or even Hammer? The misconception is that it's a
- 55:38UIO decision is an executive committee decision that they we
- 55:42create a proposal and we submit that proposal to the executive
- 55:45committee which is athletic directors and superintendents
- 55:48and ultimately they go back and vote on things.
- 55:52Creating the data is how we go about doing it.
- 55:55So obviously most states have it as Olympic event.
- 55:57When it comes to the javelin, here's going to be the issue,
- 56:01right? And this is my last part.
- 56:03Our Sprint coach can say I have no dog in a fight and I don't
- 56:06care about the javelin. So I'm not I'm not going to vote
- 56:08on it. We can't operate it like that as
- 56:10a as a police of group where individuals choosing not to vote
- 56:14on it or take up the issue because they don't have a dog in
- 56:17a fight. So we got to in order to have
- 56:19stronger numbers, we have to all advocate for something eight
- 56:22place javelin things that we all have in common that can
- 56:26obviously progress our support and get it voted on and get it
- 56:28passed. Does that make sense right.
- 56:32It's possible. It's going to tell a lot of.
- 56:34I don't think I'm going to be around long enough to do it.
- 56:36My vice president, June Villas, he's going to have to pick up
- 56:39that part. But I'm definitely here the the
- 56:42push things and then continue to advocate for our sport to get
- 56:46done. Guess gals give it up for
- 56:48Shelton Irving.
