This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
• 0:08
Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
• 0:12
County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
• 0:16
  continues teaching through God's Word.
• 0:37
We could never write a check that would be sufficient for
• 0:40
everything our parents did for us throughout our whole lives.
• 0:44
We would never be able to write a check that would be
• 0:45
sufficient. But there's an opportunity that
• 0:48
we get at some point where we can give back to them when
• 0:51
they're older and we can now support them, take off some of
• 0:55
the financial burden that they have, help them physically be a
• 0:59
support for them the way they were for us.
• 1:02
And sometimes that can be difficult because a lot of
• 1:04
parents don't want to give up that control.
• 1:07
But we do it out of love. What debt could you ever pay to
• 1:10
the One who gave His life for you?
• 1:13
In today's message, Pastor Lewis shows that no gift, no
• 1:17
sacrifice, no amount of effort could ever be enough to repay
• 1:21
what Jesus did. Yet He gives you a lifetime to
• 1:24
respond with love. When you serve Him, you're
• 1:27
simply returning love to the One who first loved you.
• 1:32
It's not about earning anything. It's about honoring the Lord who
• 1:35
paid a debt you could never settle.
• 1:38
How do you live each day as a thank you to Jesus for
• 1:41
everything He's given you? Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
• 1:45
Book of First Timothy, chapter 5, with today's edition of
• 1:49
Living Waters of Grace. The Word of God is precious,
• 1:52
Amen. And he gives us this word from
• 1:56
Genesis to Revelations, that we have the word of God.
• 1:59
And it's such a privilege to be able to hear the word of God.
• 2:02
And he gives us this word. We get this word because he, you
• 2:06
know, we are to heed the word of God.
• 2:08
And when we do heed the word of God, then we are protected.
• 2:12
We're protected. The word of God is for the
• 2:14
purpose of protecting us. The Bible says that your word is
• 2:18
a strong tower that the righteous run into and are safe.
• 2:23
When we are hidden under the wings of the Lord under His Word
• 2:28
and we heed His word, man does it help us to avoid so many
• 2:34
snares and pitfalls that the world has and the things that
• 2:38
the enemy, the traps that the enemies have set forth to be
• 2:41
able to to try to trip us up. It's the Word of God that is our
• 2:46
light as it's been spoken. The Word of God is a lamp unto
• 2:51
our feet and a light unto our pathway.
• 2:54
It lights those things. It causes us to be aware of
• 2:57
where it is that we're walking and what we should avoid, what
• 3:00
we should go around, what we should stay away from.
• 3:03
It's all in the Word of God. And when we read this as it is
• 3:08
from the Word of God, not the person standing here speaking
• 3:11
it, but as we read it as it is the Word of God, and we heed
• 3:16
that word, our lives benefit. And not only our lives, but the
• 3:21
lives of others who we're around benefit when we heed the Word of
• 3:27
God. So as we go into this 5th
• 3:30
chapter of Timothy, we understand that this is Paul the
• 3:36
evangelist. I call him the Gospel
• 3:38
Globetrotter. But Paul the evangelist who has
• 3:42
gone around, admitted his mission to go around everywhere
• 3:46
and to plant churches and to share the gospel into and to
• 3:49
allow people to know about this saving faith that has changed
• 3:53
his life so drastically and dramatically.
• 3:57
And he has, he has adopted a son in the spirit, Timothy, who is
• 4:02
his spiritual son. And, and this is like, I like to
• 4:04
picture things when I'm reading. I like to picture how what's the
• 4:08
setting? And and even though Paul wrote
• 4:11
this letter, it's almost like he's sitting in front of Timothy
• 4:15
in a chair and just giving him direction and instruction.
• 4:19
Son, heed this son, listen to this son do this that way.
• 4:26
And this is the way he reads this.
• 4:28
This is what this letter reads like a, it's an instruction.
• 4:32
And even though it's written, I mean, the title of this is, you
• 4:35
know, orders for widows and elders.
• 4:37
And even though that's the title, that doesn't mean that if
• 4:40
you're not a widow or if you're not an elder that you can just
• 4:42
check out. It doesn't mean that you can
• 4:45
just get up and leave or it's not for me.
• 4:47
I'm not a widow and nor am I an elder.
• 4:49
So it's not for me. It's for everybody.
• 4:51
It's for everybody. And the Lord made it possible
• 4:54
that we could all have it. Even though it was written
• 4:57
directly to Timothy, he made it possible that we could all have
• 5:00
it because he had Timothy put this in a letter.
• 5:05
And now we all have the benefit of reading this and feeding from
• 5:09
the table of all this wisdom. So this is the word of God.
• 5:13
Every word in the word of God is inspired by God.
• 5:16
Everything that's written in this word is inspired by God.
• 5:20
So let's start reading. We're going to start with the
• 5:23
first 3 verses here. Actually, we're going to start
• 5:25
the 1st 2:00 and then we're going to make comment.
• 5:27
It says do not rebuke an an older man.
• 5:32
Some versions may say elder, but exhort him as a father, younger
• 5:37
men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as
• 5:42
sisters with all purity. Let's just stop there for a
• 5:45
second. So we know that in first Timothy
• 5:48
315, the Bible clearly says that you ought to know how to act in
• 5:53
the House of God, which is the House of the living God.
• 5:58
Well, Paul talks about this like the House of God is a family
• 6:04
because it's a family that lives in a house.
• 6:06
So Paul wants to give the impression, he wants to give the
• 6:09
picture to Timothy and to us that a church family is just
• 6:14
that, a family. We're all family, Paul said.
• 6:18
Let's refer to each other as brothers and sisters.
• 6:20
I mean, when I was younger, every church, it was brother
• 6:23
this, sister that mother. You tell me.
• 6:25
That's all you would hear, Brother this Brother Harold,
• 6:27
brother that sister. How you know?
• 6:29
I mean, that's just the way it used to be.
• 6:30
And then we had mothers that were in the church and their
• 6:33
name was Mother Johnson or Mother Susie or whatever it
• 6:35
would be, because it was a family.
• 6:38
It was a family. But in this particular verse,
• 6:41
he's saying something even more striking.
• 6:43
He says do not rebuke. And that word rebuke here means
• 6:47
do not strike at, do not strike at.
• 6:51
So if I have to correct, if you have to correct an older person,
• 6:54
Timothy, if it's an older man that you have to correct, do it
• 6:57
with respect. Do it with reverence.
• 7:02
Don't just strike at them. Don't talk to them with a level
• 7:05
of respect. They're not your employees.
• 7:07
They're your brothers and your sisters and they are your
• 7:10
family. So speak to this older man with
• 7:16
respect and he says, but exhort him as a father.
• 7:21
Talk to him like you would talk to your father, Timothy.
• 7:25
And it's hard if you're a younger guy and you're trying to
• 7:28
correct. I don't know if any of you ever
• 7:30
had that experience. I'm sure you have had that
• 7:32
experience where you've had to correct someone that was older.
• 7:35
Maybe you've even had to have conversations with your parents
• 7:38
sometimes or with someone. I remember the first time I had
• 7:41
to have a hard conversation with my father to correct them or
• 7:44
with my mother. I mean, it was like, oh God, how
• 7:48
in the world do I how do you do that?
• 7:50
You know, I mean, it's, but Paul is saying do it with grace, do
• 7:54
it with respect, do it with care to correct them.
• 7:59
Because the correction is just like when the Lord corrects us.
• 8:02
It's out of love. It shouldn't be from any place
• 8:04
  else. It's out of love.
• 8:06
Same way we correct our kids. But if our kids have to come.
• 8:09
And sister. Daddy, you were wrong about this
• 8:11
  one. Really.
• 8:14
Yeah, Dad, you were wrong about this.
• 8:15
This is the way it happened. And that's what happened.
• 8:19
Oh, but it's with a level of respect.
• 8:22
But my kids going to say, damn, you're wrong.
• 8:24
What's wrong with you? Now that's a whole nother
• 8:27
conversation. OK, so we correct with respect.
• 8:32
We correct with respect. So anyway, he goes on and he
• 8:35
says, let's exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers.
• 8:39
So let's treat everybody like their brothers and sisters here,
• 8:41
older women as mothers. And then there's a change here.
• 8:46
There's a caveat here because now he's talking about younger
• 8:48
women as sisters and this is a message that and he, he's
• 8:51
talking to Timothy. So he's talking to a young male
• 8:55
and he says when you talk to the women in the church, Timothy,
• 8:59
the young women, talk to them or deal with them, encourage them
• 9:04
as sisters. And that is so important.
• 9:07
Brothers, young men, the young women that are in our church,
• 9:13
they are your sisters. So we should not speak to them
• 9:19
in with words of flirtatiousness or words that are enticing or
• 9:24
provocatively. We don't speak to them that way.
• 9:27
They are our sisters. We respect them, we cover them.
• 9:34
They're our sisters. Now if the relationship
• 9:39
progresses and it becomes your wife, then that's a different
• 9:42
  story. You still respect them.
• 9:45
It's still a pure relationship, but now it's your wife.
• 9:49
So in the church you have sisters and you have wives.
• 9:54
You don't disrespect the women in the church by the way you
• 9:58
treat them to speak to them. They are your spiritual sisters.
• 10:03
We don't try to entice them because we don't commit
• 10:06
spiritual incest, right? We don't ever want to commit
• 10:09
spiritual incest, so we don't try to entice them.
• 10:15
They're our sisters. And Paul makes sure he puts that
• 10:20
caveat in there where he says with all purity.
• 10:23
  That means without any impropriety.
• 10:27
It means that our motives when we talk to our sisters is pure.
• 10:32
We're not hiding any agendas or things that we're trying to do.
• 10:36
It's pure and it should be that way the other way around.
• 10:40
Sisters, young men in the church are your brothers are your
• 10:44
brothers. So then anyway, he goes on in
• 10:47
verse 3, and this is when we start getting into the real meat
• 10:49
of what it is that Paul wants to talk about from three on.
• 10:53
And he says here, honor widows who are really widows, honor the
• 10:57
widows who are really widows. But if any widow has children or
• 11:02
grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and
• 11:07
to repay their parents, for this is good and acceptable to God.
• 11:12
So Paul's saying here, as he, you know, is basically reaching
• 11:15
back into the Old Testament where it talks about protecting
• 11:19
  widows. God protects widows.
• 11:21
God always does protect widows. He covers widows.
• 11:24
He takes care of widows. He wants widows to be taken care
• 11:28
of. Now, back in the Old Testament,
• 11:29
they didn't have social service systems that take that took care
• 11:32
of widows. They didn't have pension plans
• 11:34
or anything like that. SSI or whatever it is that the
• 11:37
older people would be able to get to take care of them, but
• 11:39
they had community and God would encourage the community to take
• 11:44
care of their widows, orphans and the fatherless.
• 11:49
Those are the ones that God wanted the people to take care
• 11:52
of. So here he says honor widows who
• 11:55
are really widows, which means that Paul is making a
• 11:57
distinction between a person who is a widow and a person who
• 12:02
would qualify for support of the church.
• 12:06
And we're going to get into that to find out exactly what that
• 12:09
is. It doesn't mean to see you have
• 12:11
young women who may we want to get into this, but it has young
• 12:13
women who husband may die unexpectedly.
• 12:17
You're young, but you're young enough to and they have
• 12:20
resources that they maybe they can take care of themselves.
• 12:22
But then there's older women who can't take care of themselves
• 12:27
who are widows and they may have been widows for a long time and
• 12:29
they need support to take care of themselves.
• 12:32
But we want to explain that. So let's talk about first when
• 12:34
it says, but if any widow has children or grandchildren, some
• 12:39
versions may say nephews, but it's really grandchildren.
• 12:43
Let them first show piety or reverence or respect at home and
• 12:49
repay their parents for this is good and acceptable.
• 12:52
Before God, we know that we could never write a check that
• 12:57
would be sufficient for everything our parents did for
• 12:59
us throughout our whole lives. We would never be able to write
• 13:02
a check that would be sufficient.
• 13:04
But there's an opportunity that we get at some point where we
• 13:07
can give back to them when they're older and we can now
• 13:11
support them, take off some of the financial burden that they
• 13:14
have, help them physically be a support for them the way they
• 13:18
were for us. And sometimes that can be
• 13:20
difficult because a lot of parents don't want to give up
• 13:23
that control. But we do it out of love.
• 13:27
So we help our older parents. And it's a privilege to be able
• 13:29
to do that, to be able to give to your parents after all
• 13:34
they've given to you. You know what it's like to be
• 13:38
able to take your parents out for dinner and you pay for it
• 13:42
because there's so many times, right, that they had to pay for
• 13:44
it, right? But then you're in a position
• 13:46
that you can take them out to dinner and you can pay for it.
• 13:49
  That's a blessing. That's a blessing.
• 13:52
So he's saying here that if they have children or grandchildren
• 13:55
in the church, the grandchildren or the children are to be the
• 13:58
first to take care of these widows.
• 14:02
They shouldn't be the responsibility of the church for
• 14:05
that kind of support. That falls on the children and
• 14:08
grandchildren first and that's acceptable before God.
• 14:13
And then in verse 5, he says now she who was really a widow.
• 14:17
So in it, Paul, what do you mean really a widow?
• 14:20
How do you describe Paul who's really a widow?
• 14:22
He tells us, look at what he says.
• 14:25
She's left alone. That means there is no one
• 14:27
living or she doesn't have any children or either all her
• 14:31
children are gone. Like in a situation with Naomi,
• 14:35
all of her children are gone. There was no one else to take
• 14:38
care of her. So he says, well, you know, in
• 14:42
that situation where the she's left alone and she trusts in God
• 14:47
and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.
• 14:51
So this is a true widow who has decided that OK, my husband has
• 14:57
died, so for the rest of my life I'm going to give it to the
• 15:02
Lord. I'm dedicating the rest of my
• 15:04
life to the Lord. I'm committing everything,
• 15:07
Everything I have my prayers, my supplications, my service.
• 15:11
It's all going to the Lord. I'm not looking to remarry.
• 15:14
I'm not looking to get back into another marriage and have to be
• 15:17
  responsible to someone else again.
• 15:19
I just want to be with the Lord for the rest of my days.
• 15:24
Paul is saying this is a true or the real widow.
• 15:29
This is the person that the church will support.
• 15:32
And then in verse 6, he says, but she who lives in pleasure is
• 15:37
dead while she lives. She who lives in pleasure is
• 15:41
dead while she lives. What is he saying here?
• 15:44
So if there's a widow, she dies and she has resources and
• 15:48
instead of her spending those resources taking care of her
• 15:51
bills, taking care of her home, you know, taking care of the
• 15:54
things that need to be taken care of, she spends those things
• 15:57
on herself, papering herself. She spends them maybe drinking
• 16:01
or she spends them maybe buying bunch of things that she really
• 16:05
doesn't need. She's spending them on the
• 16:06
pleasure, fulfilling the desires of her flesh, living in
• 16:12
pleasure. Paul said these women are dead
• 16:14
  while they live. Why?
• 16:16
Because they are living outside of the will of God, because a
• 16:19
lot of things that they're doing, living in pleasure is
• 16:22
also seeking physical pleasure as well.
• 16:26
So then he goes on in verse 7 and he says, and these things
• 16:31
command that they may be blameless.
• 16:33
We have a biblical example of a true widow, and it's back in
• 16:38
Luke chapter 2, verses 36, and it's Anna who was a prophetess,
• 16:43
who was a widow. She's been a widow for over 84
• 16:45
years. And this is a woman who decided
• 16:48
to, after her husband died, she was going to go into the temple
• 16:52
and give all of her resources, her prayers, her supplications,
• 16:56
all those things are going to be given to the Lord, going to be
• 17:02
given to the Lord. Anna's a true example of that.
• 17:06
So then we go to verse 7, it says, and these things command
• 17:09
that they may be blameless. But in verse 8 it says, but if
• 17:13
anyone does not provide for his own and especially for those of
• 17:18
his household, he has denied the faith and is worse, is worse
• 17:24
than an unbeliever. Paul is saying, Timothy, listen,
• 17:28
if you have people in your church that are Christians,
• 17:31
they're believers and they have widows in their home and they're
• 17:37
not taking care of them, what kind of a testimony is that to
• 17:43
people outside of the home? He said it's worse than being an
• 17:48
unbeliever because even some unbelievers would take care of
• 17:52
their own families. That's in the house with them.
• 17:56
Plus the Scripture says in the book of Exodus, it says honor
• 18:01
thy father and thy mother that your days will be long upon.
• 18:06
It's the first commandment of promise.
• 18:10
Honor your father and your mother that your days will be
• 18:13
long upon the earth. It does not say honor the good
• 18:18
ones. It doesn't say honor the good
• 18:21
parents. It doesn't say honor the parents
• 18:23
who were good to you. Honor the parents who raised you
• 18:28
correctly, who was always there. Doesn't say that.
• 18:31
It says honor your father and your mother's, that your days
• 18:36
will be long. Sometimes you have to find it in
• 18:39
the spirit of God to go back to a parent who may have been
• 18:44
abusive, a parent who may have been lived the wildlife and
• 18:49
maybe did not take care of you the way that they should have,
• 18:52
didn't give you the attention that you should have received.
• 18:56
Paul say, you got to look beyond, you got to forgive and
• 19:00
you got to go back and you have to honor your father and your
• 19:04
mother. And that's something that God
• 19:08
will honor. When we can do that, God will
• 19:11
honor that. He loves it when we reconcile
• 19:15
and we seek reconciliation. We seek peace.
• 19:17
And I know for some people that's hard because there's some
• 19:20
real stories. I'm not ignoring that.
• 19:22
There's some real stories. There's some situations where
• 19:24
people have gone through some really tragic things with
• 19:27
parents. I realize that, but God is
• 19:31
calling us to honor them anyway, to honor them.
• 19:37
And maybe through what they see in you, their lives may change.
• 19:42
They see God in you, they see Christ in you, their lives may
• 19:46
change. So he goes on and he says here
• 19:50
in verse 9, do not let a widow under 60 years old be taken into
• 19:56
the number and not unless she has been the wife of one man.
• 20:00
So what Paul's saying here is that, OK, these are the
• 20:03
qualifications. He started to talk about the
• 20:05
qualifications again of a true widow and he said first of all
• 20:08
she needs to be over 60 years old because the widows who were
• 20:12
younger. Well, they don't need to be
• 20:16
taken into the number and that number you talk about the
• 20:18
enlisted number that a church puts together, a number of
• 20:21
enrollment where the church puts together a list of the widows
• 20:24
that they will support or the ones that they will help
• 20:27
financially. OK, He puts together a list.
• 20:30
They put together a list and he's saying that those who are
• 20:33
under 60 should not be on that list.
• 20:37
And it says not unless she has been the wife of one man.
• 20:41
So that's the other stipulation, that a widow must be over 60 and
• 20:45
be the wife of one man. So this is a widow who does not
• 20:49
get remarried and then get remarried again and remarried
• 20:51
again. Well reported for good works.
• 20:56
This is a widow. This is a woman who has given
• 20:58
her life to good work, serving in the community, serving in her
• 21:02
neighborhood, maybe serving in the church, helping out wherever
• 21:06
she can. She's given her life to good
• 21:09
work. She has a reputation for good
• 21:12
works, not a reputation for running in and out of bars and
• 21:16
hanging out and looking for pleasure.
• 21:18
We're talking about women who are serving the Lord and serving
• 21:22
him in the House of God or in the community or wherever.
• 21:27
But she has a reputation, a well reported.
• 21:31
That means a reputation for good works.
• 21:33
If she has brought up children. If this is a woman who has
• 21:37
raised children, even though they may be gone now, but maybe
• 21:40
she's raised them. Maybe she's taken in orphans
• 21:42
  before. Maybe she's taken in a friend's
• 21:47
kids who end up passing and didn't have anybody to take care
• 21:50
of them. This woman, this widow took the
• 21:53
children and raised them. I've seen those kind of things
• 21:56
happen before. And it says if she has large
• 21:59
strangers, hospitality, you know, the true widow is a woman
• 22:03
who has a heart of hospitality. So she'll take in strangers
• 22:09
because, see, back in these days, you know, they used to
• 22:11
travel quite a bit. Men used to travel or other
• 22:13
people used to travel, and it was dangerous in the streets to
• 22:16
be out there late at night. They need to find somewhere to
• 22:18
lodge and somewhere it was. And sometimes it was hard to
• 22:21
find safe places to lodge. Well, this widow would take them
• 22:25
in, this widow would take them in, take in strangers.
• 22:29
And even now, like when I think we talked about it before, that
• 22:32
churches may travel around and, and they come to visit.
• 22:36
People come to visit. We get missionaries sometime to
• 22:38
come to visit. And everybody don't know who
• 22:40
these missionaries are. But the widow was the one that
• 22:44
would say, well, if they don't have anywhere to stay, I'll take
• 22:46
them to my house. I got room, I got space.
• 22:48
They'll take them in their house or other, you know some of the
• 22:51
other people that may travel with them.
• 22:53
I'll give them somewhere to stay.
• 22:54
Hospitality, they have a spirit of hospitality goes on.
• 22:58
If she has washed the Saints feet.
• 23:01
Now washing the feet is something that we don't
• 23:03
typically do. That doesn't happen that much in
• 23:06
the church. There are some churches now I
• 23:08
want to say there are some churches that still do that.
• 23:10
They will wash feet. They'll have what they call a
• 23:11
foot washing ceremony. Not sure what that looks like,
• 23:15
but they do that and they'll wash feet.
• 23:17
But what Paul's talking about here is being a humble servant,
• 23:22
being able to do or be willing to do menial things, things that
• 23:26
maybe other people wouldn't want to do or see themselves above
• 23:30
doing it. Paul said, you know, this widow,
• 23:32
a widow, a humble servant will do those kind of things.
• 23:36
And then he goes on and he says, I love this one.
• 23:38
If she has relieved the afflicted, this is a woman who
• 23:43
is truly, truly filled with the spirit of mercy.
• 23:50
If there's an affliction, she goes to help.
• 23:53
If someone is afflicted, she goes to help.
• 23:57
Here on Living Waters of Grace, we're in the books of First and
• 24:00
Second Timothy. Pastor Lewis Harrell is walking
• 24:03
us through these letters written from Paul to Timothy.
• 24:07
Toward the end of these letters, Paul is anticipating that his
• 24:10
time here on earth is coming to a close.
• 24:13
He's giving some final words of advice to his mentee.
• 24:17
Paul writes in Second Timothy 4, verse seven.
• 24:20
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
• 24:23
I have kept the faith. Wherever you are in your journey
• 24:27
of faith with God, our hope is that you have the willingness to
• 24:31
fight for what's true. Not compromising, but holding
• 24:35
fast to the Word of God. Paul was reminding Timothy of
• 24:39
this, and it's a good reminder for you and for me today, too.
