- 0:13what is going on everybody we're back
- 0:39We are back doing interviews.
- 0:40We've done some shows
- 0:43consistently throughout the year,
- 0:44but it's been a little
- 0:45break since we've done some interviews.
- 0:47And I wanted the first one
- 0:48back to be with a friend.
- 0:50And so I called my good buddy Tristan up,
- 0:54texted you, said, hey,
- 0:55you want to jump on?
- 0:56You said, sure thing.
- 0:58We got delayed a little bit,
- 0:59but here we are.
- 1:00We made it.
- 1:01We made it.
- 1:03So I wanted to be a friend
- 1:05because this is truly,
- 1:07other than Masters athletes,
- 1:09my first interview since
- 1:11the CrossFit Games.
- 1:13And that has been five months.
- 1:17Crazy.
- 1:18Yeah.
- 1:18For a guy who was doing,
- 1:20right before the games, five, six, eight,
- 1:23ten interviews a week to go
- 1:26to none was rough.
- 1:30I think it was needed in a myriad of ways.
- 1:36One, just to
- 1:38catch my breath a little bit, um,
- 1:41and sort some things out, uh,
- 1:43after the games in my own
- 1:45head before I asked anybody
- 1:47else about it.
- 1:48Sure.
- 1:49So, um, so how have you been, man?
- 1:53Busy as ever.
- 1:55Uh, I mean, games, you know,
- 1:57ended and then, uh,
- 2:00what masters games was right after that.
- 2:02So was out there and then came back and,
- 2:07uh,
- 2:08got married.
- 2:11Me and my now wife got married.
- 2:13Thank you, sir.
- 2:14October eighteenth.
- 2:16And then that was all during
- 2:20kind of offseason qualifier
- 2:22time and then went to Desert City,
- 2:27went to Turkey Challenge up in Colorado.
- 2:31Athletes here were doing
- 2:32some other competitions in
- 2:34Louisiana and Texas and
- 2:38then Thanksgiving and now
- 2:39kind of December's the one
- 2:41month we have to kind of,
- 2:44and relax a little bit before, you know,
- 2:46Waterpalooza, TFX, Fitness to the Coast,
- 2:48and then the season itself.
- 2:53So there's a lot in there.
- 2:54Congratulations on the marriage.
- 2:56Thank you.
- 2:57You guys have been engaged quite a while,
- 2:58right?
- 2:59Yeah.
- 3:00Yeah.
- 3:00We were engaged, gosh,
- 3:01almost like two years, I think.
- 3:03We were engaged a while.
- 3:05So,
- 3:06my experience no wedding
- 3:07goes off without a hitch
- 3:09there's always something
- 3:10behind the scenes that
- 3:11happens that gives you a
- 3:13story for the rest of your
- 3:14life do you have one of
- 3:15those ours was about as
- 3:18hitchless as you could get
- 3:19I think um the only thing
- 3:23that really almost was a
- 3:25hiccup was our officiant um
- 3:29misplaced his tie
- 3:32So we had to get his tie
- 3:34delivered by his wife.
- 3:37But she made it with plenty
- 3:38of time to spare and things like that.
- 3:42So other than that, it was pretty seamless,
- 3:44though.
- 3:45Yeah, I was not so fortunate.
- 3:48When we were going from the
- 3:49wedding to the reception,
- 3:51we were to walk in through
- 3:52this like arch of stuff
- 3:56into the reception.
- 3:58I stepped on my wife's train,
- 4:00ripped her dress in the back.
- 4:05And thank goodness we
- 4:06invited the seamstress to the wedding.
- 4:08yep um as we hustled to the
- 4:11kitchen for her to get sewn
- 4:13back up super fast we could
- 4:15continue on with the
- 4:17reception that would have
- 4:18been stressful that would
- 4:19have stressed me out that
- 4:21would have been yeah no it
- 4:22was it was a lot of fun um
- 4:25it turned out really well I
- 4:27I think it was the day that
- 4:28we we both really wanted it
- 4:29to be so it was awesome that's awesome
- 4:33clearing up a couple things.
- 4:34Corey Leonard says,
- 4:36I am Tristan's favorite IG person ever.
- 4:39He might be.
- 4:42He likes to ask me some of
- 4:43the most ridiculous
- 4:44questions when I'll throw
- 4:46up my Monday little Q&A thing.
- 4:50He comes up with some good ones.
- 4:52Corey also said,
- 4:52can we get Tristan's
- 4:53mustache its own window?
- 4:55Do you like that, Corey?
- 4:56Do you like that?
- 4:58And Jamie says, no, I don't like it.
- 5:00I mean, she says hi.
- 5:03Yeah,
- 5:03I don't know how Jamie would feel
- 5:04about the mustache.
- 5:08So you mentioned a bunch in there.
- 5:11Masters CrossFit Games,
- 5:12we were there together.
- 5:14You are the coach of Jamie Latimer.
- 5:17How did this year's Masters
- 5:18CrossFit Games go?
- 5:20I mean, she crushed it.
- 5:21I was super proud of her.
- 5:24I felt like it was well run.
- 5:27The programming, I think,
- 5:28was something that we could
- 5:30have talked about earlier.
- 5:32in hindsight,
- 5:32just some of the events and
- 5:35things like that.
- 5:36I'm sure I know.
- 5:38I feel like I heard some
- 5:38people mentioned in some of
- 5:39the behind the scenes with
- 5:41like the snatch event being
- 5:43kind of who can load their
- 5:44bar faster and all those kinds of things.
- 5:46But I really enjoyed it.
- 5:49I thought it was cool.
- 5:49That was the first time I
- 5:51was really inundated in the
- 5:53masters community at a big
- 5:55competition like that.
- 5:57So I really enjoyed it,
- 5:58and I was super proud of how Jamie did.
- 6:00I think she went out there
- 6:01and performed as we knew that she could.
- 6:05Maybe not what she thought
- 6:06she was capable of,
- 6:07but I was super proud of her.
- 6:10Yeah.
- 6:10I think she surprised
- 6:12herself on a couple events,
- 6:13which was really cool to see.
- 6:16Overall,
- 6:16I thought it was the most fun I
- 6:19had doing anything in
- 6:21CrossFit was making that
- 6:22behind the scenes and
- 6:24hanging out in the back
- 6:25with a community that
- 6:28really is grassroots right
- 6:29like these people are not
- 6:31doing it for the money I
- 6:33mean there are a select few
- 6:34that are really good and
- 6:35can make a career out of it
- 6:37in the master's division
- 6:38but for the most part
- 6:40ninety percent of those
- 6:40people are there because it
- 6:42was a goal they had some of
- 6:44them have had it for
- 6:45thirteen fourteen fifteen
- 6:46years and finally made it
- 6:48come true um it was so
- 6:51inspiring and so much fun
- 6:53to hang out back there yeah
- 6:55it was a lot of fun it was it was cool
- 6:59Not that it was better or
- 7:00worse than the regular
- 7:02games or the elite athletes.
- 7:04It's just different.
- 7:05It's different.
- 7:05Very different vibe.
- 7:06It's way different.
- 7:07It's way different vibe.
- 7:10Yeah,
- 7:11Corey is going to Legends this weekend.
- 7:14Oh, nice.
- 7:15His first big competition as
- 7:16a Masters athlete.
- 7:17Good luck, Corey.
- 7:19He sucks at crossover singles.
- 7:24They have them this week at Legends.
- 7:27He texted me in a panic yesterday.
- 7:30um any advice for mr mr
- 7:32leonard on those crossovers
- 7:33uh I mean he can message me
- 7:36on instagram and I'll try
- 7:37to help him out for sure
- 7:38but general advice if you
- 7:40have to do them and it's a
- 7:43technical thing you might
- 7:44be able to bypass that if
- 7:45you just get a really long
- 7:46rope so you have a lot of
- 7:48slack to play with if
- 7:50you're tripping on your own
- 7:51rope try to get a longer
- 7:52rope but if it's a
- 7:53technical thing you might
- 7:54be able to figure it out
- 7:58Kenneth gives them the advice,
- 7:59do your best and forget the rest.
- 8:02That is sound advice.
- 8:04Yeah.
- 8:05So when I was a kid,
- 8:06I was a huge Rocky fan.
- 8:08Every time I'd watch a Rocky movie,
- 8:09I'd go out on the porch and
- 8:10I would do double unders.
- 8:12I would do crossovers.
- 8:13I would do all the stuff
- 8:15because I wanted to be like Rocky, right?
- 8:18And so the crossovers are
- 8:20one of the party tricks
- 8:22that I actually have.
- 8:24Like of all of the things in CrossFit,
- 8:27it's the one thing I can do.
- 8:28I can do reverse crossovers.
- 8:32That's impressive.
- 8:34yeah that's impressive those
- 8:36are hard really hard I mean
- 8:38that that was the stupid I
- 8:40did as a kid sure um you
- 8:42know but it's funny how
- 8:44sometimes that stuff shows
- 8:46back up again you know like
- 8:48the kids who walked on
- 8:49their hands like apparently
- 8:51that was a thing for people
- 8:52in their childhood I never
- 8:53got that memo uh me neither
- 8:55it never occurred to me to
- 8:56handstand walk but I know
- 8:58people who were like yeah I
- 8:59used to handstand walk when
- 8:59I was a kid I was like what okay
- 9:02yeah I my advice to him was
- 9:04just keep your hands low
- 9:05that is as long as you can
- 9:07keep your hands low the
- 9:08better you off you'll be
- 9:10yeah just in that it's just
- 9:11it's the long rope theory
- 9:13right exactly hands the
- 9:14longer the rope is yeah and
- 9:16really reach when you do
- 9:19the crossover yeah so then
- 9:23did you go to crash with
- 9:24jacob or did you do that from afar
- 9:26I did not because that was
- 9:28the week before the wedding.
- 9:30So he went to Crash Solo,
- 9:33and then I went to Desert
- 9:35City where Hattie was and Madison,
- 9:41and then he was at Wodgods
- 9:43that same weekend.
- 9:45Okay.
- 9:45And then I went to Turkey
- 9:48Challenge with him,
- 9:50and then Madison did that on a team,
- 9:52and then Courtney did that as well.
- 9:55okay cool um how was desert
- 9:59city because that's where
- 10:00legends was last year the
- 10:02facility is phenomenal
- 10:05facility's cool I really
- 10:07enjoyed it um it was well
- 10:09run it was on time um I
- 10:12didn't see or notice any
- 10:14crazy you know like judging
- 10:16snafus or anything like that like
- 10:19It seemed very well run.
- 10:20I really enjoyed it.
- 10:22The venue was cool.
- 10:24I'm originally from New Mexico,
- 10:26so anytime I get to go back
- 10:28to the Southwest, I'm pretty excited.
- 10:31So it was nice to be in
- 10:32Phoenix and be in Arizona.
- 10:34How was Scott Panczyk as a
- 10:35programmer for an event?
- 10:39I liked the events.
- 10:43There were two events that
- 10:45were basically predicated
- 10:47on your running ability.
- 10:50They were different to a degree,
- 10:53but there was an event with rope climbs,
- 10:56total bar, bike,
- 10:57and then it was like four
- 10:58hundred meter runs dispersed.
- 11:01And then there was another
- 11:02event that was like a back
- 11:03squat buy-in from the floor
- 11:06and then a mile for time.
- 11:10so that was a little bit
- 11:13redundant to me um but I
- 11:16liked the swim row bench
- 11:18press they had a the lift
- 11:21was interesting it was like
- 11:23certain time domain to do
- 11:24seven snatches and your
- 11:27score was total load um and
- 11:30if so if you missed you
- 11:32know you could hit another
- 11:33snatch but if you once you
- 11:35had seven reps on the board
- 11:36you were done you couldn't go heavier
- 11:39or hit another lift.
- 11:40So that was kind of different.
- 11:42A little gamesy.
- 11:44It kind of turned into a
- 11:45snatch consistency test.
- 11:49What was the other event they had?
- 11:51The other gymnastics workout
- 11:52with Chester Barr, bar muscle-ups,
- 11:55crossovers, and hands-down walk,
- 11:56and ring muscle-ups.
- 11:57That was a good event.
- 11:58I liked the programming.
- 11:59I liked that he called an audible,
- 12:02actually.
- 12:04So the last event was originally,
- 12:06it was like three rounds of
- 12:08dumbbell snatch,
- 12:10lateral burpees of the
- 12:11dumbbell and then double
- 12:12dumbbell thrusters.
- 12:15And originally it was fifty
- 12:17and thirty five across.
- 12:20And he called an audible day of.
- 12:23For the elite to do it with
- 12:25heavy dumbbell snatches,
- 12:27so seventy and fifty,
- 12:29and then they kept fifty
- 12:30and thirty five for the thrusters,
- 12:32and I really enjoyed
- 12:34I thought when I got to the weekend,
- 12:37I had thought that event
- 12:38should be programmed that way.
- 12:40So there was more separation.
- 12:42And then I talked to him
- 12:44after he was watching the RX do it.
- 12:46And he made the decision like, hey,
- 12:49we need to change this for
- 12:50the pro division, the elite division.
- 12:53And I thought that was really cool.
- 12:57So a couple quick notes here.
- 13:00Kenneth says,
- 13:00I caught Brian Friend interviewing you,
- 13:02and I was like, hey,
- 13:03that's Coach Krispy Kreme.
- 13:05I lost the shirt, and it makes me so sad.
- 13:09Need to find a way to remake that.
- 13:10I know.
- 13:12And then I was actually
- 13:13going to ask you this question.
- 13:16Did you check out Reps Ahead
- 13:18while you were at the turkey thing?
- 13:20I didn't watch it live.
- 13:23We ended up watching...
- 13:26little bit of it back at
- 13:27Madison's house after we
- 13:30left the venue I like the
- 13:32idea it's different I think
- 13:37it's a cool thing to do I
- 13:41thought this was the best
- 13:42version of it so far okay
- 13:44but I think that my take is
- 13:49they need to change up
- 13:52the movements it's getting
- 13:55repetitive already after
- 13:56just five of where there's
- 13:59a box something in the
- 14:00middle there is a barbell
- 14:02at one end and there's a
- 14:03gymnastic move on the
- 14:04barbell and I get it
- 14:05they're trying to be have a
- 14:07little bit of everything in
- 14:08it but it just seems to be
- 14:11getting repetitive that
- 14:13makes sense but yeah but I
- 14:17thought this was the best
- 14:18one yet because people were
- 14:19going for knockouts
- 14:21Yeah.
- 14:22Which makes it more dramatic.
- 14:25Right.
- 14:25And it took me all till the
- 14:26fifth one that I watched to
- 14:28understand it's based on
- 14:30like a boxing or an MMA fight.
- 14:31Like, yeah, right.
- 14:33It's a rounds and you're
- 14:35trying to get a knockout and you're like,
- 14:37and then as I saw that,
- 14:39that concept came to my head better, like,
- 14:41and I enjoyed the matches better.
- 14:44yeah yeah it's it was a
- 14:46little I I had never
- 14:47watched uh like the intro
- 14:49where they call out like
- 14:50name age height weight and
- 14:52I was like oh that's odd
- 14:54for a crossfit event but
- 14:55that's kind of like you
- 14:56said what they're going for
- 14:57so right yeah I and I love
- 15:01I love the rep counter like
- 15:03that innovation alone if it
- 15:06could be brought to
- 15:08other events where there's a
- 15:09TV screen on the floor with the reps.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:13Would change the freaking game for the,
- 15:15for CrossFit.
- 15:18It would be so much more
- 15:19watchable and so easy to tell the story.
- 15:22If you could see the
- 15:23person's reps in their lane.
- 15:25Right.
- 15:27Yeah.
- 15:27Cause they've never really had that live.
- 15:29They've had it on the broadcast.
- 15:31Right.
- 15:32Yeah.
- 15:32At the top mayhem classic
- 15:34tried to pull it off.
- 15:36Okay.
- 15:36Yeah.
- 15:38back in twenty twenty and it
- 15:41was successful one of the
- 15:42three days on the Sunday it
- 15:44was successful but they had
- 15:46like hellacious weather the
- 15:49weekend they were like and
- 15:50it affected all of the
- 15:52internet technical stuff
- 15:55for the weekend so I'd like
- 15:57to see it tried again but
- 16:00Rich Rich said that weekend
- 16:02that it was pretty
- 16:03expensive but he wanted to
- 16:04have the best viewing experience possible
- 16:07yeah yeah that makes sense
- 16:11um so yeah so you you get
- 16:13through all that and in in
- 16:15the meantime there's all
- 16:17these questions in the air
- 16:19as to what twenty twenty
- 16:21five is going to be hearing
- 16:24rumors hearing people going
- 16:29to try other things um
- 16:32We got an announcement, what,
- 16:33two weeks ago?
- 16:34I think so.
- 16:35I think two weeks ago today
- 16:37of what CrossFit released
- 16:40as their season.
- 16:41It lacked some detail.
- 16:44Yeah.
- 16:46And amongst this,
- 16:48there's a world fitness
- 16:49project created by Will
- 16:51Morad that's happening as well.
- 16:54We have even less details about that.
- 16:58yeah so as a coach with all
- 17:00of this stuff going on and
- 17:01rumors circulating like
- 17:02crazy what is your
- 17:04responsibility to your
- 17:06athlete during this time I
- 17:11mean I don't like to
- 17:16contribute to things that
- 17:18are going to make the
- 17:18athletes sit around and
- 17:19stress out and and ruminate
- 17:21uh I feel like most of the
- 17:23athletes in the space do
- 17:24that enough on their own
- 17:25they just sit around and
- 17:26worry about everything you
- 17:27know obviously like the
- 17:29changes every year make it
- 17:30easy to do that and the
- 17:33events of the last season
- 17:34you know kind of made the
- 17:36climate that way um so I
- 17:39stayed pretty low-key um
- 17:39you know conversations with
- 17:42people but at the end of the day we're
- 17:45We're trying to get bigger, stronger,
- 17:46faster,
- 17:46and fitter and better at the sport
- 17:49of CrossFit.
- 17:49So those things don't really change.
- 17:55As we start to get this
- 17:56information and stuff,
- 17:57there's more conversation about, okay,
- 17:59what do you want to do?
- 18:01With how these decisions
- 18:04they've made impact them
- 18:06based on their competitive
- 18:08level as an athlete.
- 18:10How do you want to approach this?
- 18:12My role is not to tell people what to do.
- 18:15My role is to guide them
- 18:17toward hopefully this
- 18:20achievement or this
- 18:22improvement in performance
- 18:24and things like that.
- 18:25But they're the ones who say
- 18:28where the boat goes.
- 18:29They're the ones who pick
- 18:31the landmark that they want
- 18:32to move toward.
- 18:33So since we've got the announcement,
- 18:35I've just been starting to
- 18:36have those kind of
- 18:37conversations with my athletes.
- 18:40you know,
- 18:41what do you want to kind of train
- 18:42for based on these changes?
- 18:44What do you feel like
- 18:45putting your time and
- 18:45energy and sacrifice into?
- 18:48And just being there to
- 18:50facilitate conversation and
- 18:51listen to them and
- 18:54illuminate other opportunities.
- 18:55There might be things like that.
- 18:59Do you foresee,
- 19:01because you have a handful of athletes,
- 19:03do you have a, do you foresee like,
- 19:06Part wanting to go one
- 19:07direction and part wanting to go another?
- 19:09Or do you see them kind of
- 19:12all heading in that same
- 19:13direction right now?
- 19:17So for me,
- 19:18the way I kind of categorize
- 19:19this in my head,
- 19:20so I coach a lot of athletes who are,
- 19:23I would say, high quarterfinals.
- 19:26And so semis bubble.
- 19:28I think for them,
- 19:29there will be more of a potential divide.
- 19:39if their goal has been to
- 19:40make a semifinal and we
- 19:42don't know any information
- 19:43about how to get to the
- 19:44in-person sanctional yet,
- 19:46so acting off the
- 19:47information they have right now,
- 19:48if the Open doesn't lead or
- 19:53isn't a requirement for the
- 19:54qualification to an in-person sanctional,
- 19:58and they don't have the
- 20:00desire to do online
- 20:01semifinals at the affiliate,
- 20:03knowing that just the
- 20:04reality is they're not
- 20:05going to be in the top
- 20:06twenty in the world, like that's just,
- 20:08you know, call a spade a spade,
- 20:11then I think a lot of those
- 20:13athletes will probably just
- 20:15potentially look for other
- 20:16competition opportunity
- 20:17some of them will still do
- 20:18the open just to do it with
- 20:19their community do it to
- 20:21throw down you know oh
- 20:23let's make sure I'm in the
- 20:24top one percent like this
- 20:25is a good benchmark to have
- 20:27but whether they want to do
- 20:30the online semis you know I
- 20:32think that just kind of
- 20:32varies person to person um
- 20:36and then I think for you
- 20:39know hattie jacob
- 20:42I actually haven't really
- 20:43dove into super intense
- 20:44conversations with them yet.
- 20:45Uh, Jacob's been doing a lot of competing.
- 20:48He's doing, you know,
- 20:49some more competing before
- 20:50the season starts.
- 20:51So it's just one of those
- 20:54things where I also feel
- 20:55like I don't really want to
- 20:56sit down and okay,
- 20:58what's the deal until we
- 20:59have more information.
- 21:01Um,
- 21:02Hattie's been doing some
- 21:03competing as well as she
- 21:04won Battle of the Barracks.
- 21:06Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 21:07Second at Desert City, correct?
- 21:10Yeah, yeah.
- 21:12Yeah, that was a wild weekend.
- 21:16So those are the people that
- 21:19I'm most concerned about.
- 21:22As you're hearing people declaring,
- 21:25and I'm not sure, other than Emma McQuaid,
- 21:28we've had a definitive
- 21:29declaration as to I'm not doing the Open.
- 21:34We had Pat Vellner the other day say,
- 21:36probably not.
- 21:38But we've had one definitive statement.
- 21:41Chandler Smith put out something.
- 21:42I'm not sure what it said.
- 21:44Yeah, it was pretty big.
- 21:46Yeah, so with...
- 21:51let's go with Pat's interview.
- 21:53You know,
- 21:53he says that people have
- 21:55Stockholm syndrome and they
- 21:56think that the only way to
- 21:57success is through the game season.
- 22:00And I think that's easy to
- 22:02say for a veteran athlete
- 22:04who has done this ten times
- 22:06or however many it's been
- 22:07for him and has then been
- 22:10given the opportunities to
- 22:12do the water paloozas and
- 22:13the rogues and the Dubai's
- 22:16and by invitation generally
- 22:17as well where he doesn't
- 22:18even have to do the online qualifiers.
- 22:21But in the last two game seasons,
- 22:24you have coached an athlete
- 22:26that nobody gave a shot to
- 22:27make the games.
- 22:30And they both made it.
- 22:32And Kelly Baker and Hattie Canio.
- 22:35What about those athletes?
- 22:46I feel like at the core of
- 22:47this for a lot of the
- 22:48athletes that are not those veterans...
- 22:51the value proposition is not the same.
- 23:01To me, Pat and those athletes,
- 23:05their value proposition is
- 23:06different because they
- 23:07truly do make a living from
- 23:10going to the games.
- 23:12Whereas even for athletes
- 23:13who are striving to reach
- 23:14for the CrossFit Games for
- 23:15the first time,
- 23:17if they're not a crazy
- 23:19social media influencer,
- 23:21they are doing it for the
- 23:22achievement of making the CrossFit Games.
- 23:25And that is an achievement
- 23:27because the CrossFit Games
- 23:28has name and legacy and prestige.
- 23:31And, you know, it's the UFC of our sport.
- 23:34It's the NFL, right?
- 23:36It's, you know,
- 23:37insert whatever analogy you want.
- 23:40So I think for them,
- 23:45the value proposition is,
- 23:48doesn't change in the same
- 23:50way it's just still the
- 23:52conversation of is this a
- 23:55game you is this a format
- 23:57you want to participate in
- 23:59right like do you want to
- 24:01do this online thing or go
- 24:03to this sanctional that you
- 24:04have to win right to
- 24:06qualify for the games now
- 24:07everything's worldwide or
- 24:08do you want to see
- 24:09competition opportunity
- 24:10elsewhere and I don't
- 24:15I don't have a lot of faith
- 24:17that online semifinals will be fair.
- 24:21I just don't like, and it's not like I'm,
- 24:24I'm super excited about the
- 24:25judging thing.
- 24:26You know, the increased judges course,
- 24:28the public video, the review,
- 24:29all that stuff.
- 24:29You best believe I'm going
- 24:30to be on YouTube.
- 24:31You know, like I'm one of those guys.
- 24:33I will sacrifice my time to do my part.
- 24:36But at the same time, I,
- 24:40they don't have a track
- 24:40record that inspires me
- 24:41very much with that.
- 24:42Right.
- 24:43So,
- 24:47And not to speak for him,
- 24:49but another slight
- 24:51difference in this case is
- 24:52somebody like Jacob.
- 24:54Jacob outperforms by an
- 24:56average of twenty percent in person.
- 24:59I've literally done the math.
- 25:02So the online semifinal thing,
- 25:04we can do it.
- 25:06Sure.
- 25:07He's not ignorant to the
- 25:10fact that his raw fitness
- 25:11is probably not in the top
- 25:12twenty in the world,
- 25:13let alone in an online setting yet.
- 25:16So for him, like I said,
- 25:18not to speak for him,
- 25:19but I venture to say we'll
- 25:21be very focused on trying
- 25:23to get to an in-person sanction,
- 25:24whatever that looks like.
- 25:27Before we move on from that little piece,
- 25:33would it make you feel
- 25:34better if you knew what
- 25:35that sanctional piece was?
- 25:37Like right now, we have no idea.
- 25:40We don't even know a number.
- 25:41We don't even know locations.
- 25:44We know nothing about that sanctuary.
- 25:46If you knew what it took to get there,
- 25:49when they were and where they were,
- 25:51would it help you to think
- 25:53about the season better?
- 25:57Sorry, my dog is freaking out.
- 26:02Yes,
- 26:04it would make me feel better in the
- 26:05sense I'm a planner.
- 26:07And I like to be able to
- 26:10roadmap things and plan
- 26:11things and back plan from
- 26:12the date we need to be
- 26:13ready to go and have those conversations,
- 26:16start to figure out what
- 26:16the competitive field is
- 26:17going to look like, travel.
- 26:18All of this, as far as we know,
- 26:21or at least from the wording is used,
- 26:22seems like it's going to be
- 26:24worldwide now.
- 26:25So what sanctional do we go to?
- 26:31Is it open?
- 26:33Like, you know, all of those questions.
- 26:35So I think it'd be nice if we had some,
- 26:38it'll be nice when we get
- 26:38some clarity on those
- 26:39things to start to put
- 26:41together a roadmap and an
- 26:42idea for the season.
- 26:44I think that is probably the
- 26:45best change is I think we
- 26:47have scrapped the regions.
- 26:51Pros and cons, I guess.
- 26:53But I'll be very curious how
- 26:56they're going to
- 27:01how are you going to send
- 27:02people where right like I
- 27:03just we just don't know
- 27:04like is it I I will be
- 27:07surprised if you can go to
- 27:09an online or a an in-person
- 27:10sanctional without having
- 27:12to do the open I agree so
- 27:18are you then funneling
- 27:20people from the top one
- 27:22percent to these or do they
- 27:24have to do another
- 27:25qualifier to make it for the event itself
- 27:31So my original guess was
- 27:33that they would use your open score to,
- 27:38to,
- 27:39and then you sign up and they
- 27:40determine based on your finish,
- 27:43if you are the top,
- 27:45whatever they're taking for that,
- 27:48who have signed up.
- 27:50Okay.
- 27:51So if that's the case,
- 27:54it would only make sense
- 27:55that they're still going to
- 27:57use geography.
- 28:01to I don't think they are so
- 28:04but so then how does that
- 28:05sensically make sense if
- 28:07okay so jacob or hattie or
- 28:09whoever you know does the
- 28:11open and they're in the top
- 28:13whatever percent and then
- 28:15they get an email and they
- 28:16say hey congratulations you
- 28:17can either participate in
- 28:19the online semi-final and
- 28:21if you'd like to go to an
- 28:22in-person uh sanctional
- 28:24you'll be going to torian pro
- 28:28I don't think they're going
- 28:29to tell you where to go.
- 28:31I think that the sanctionals will be,
- 28:33and it'll be just like,
- 28:37here are the seven sanctionals.
- 28:41You are open to go to any of those seven.
- 28:43You can go to all seven.
- 28:46I wonder, I guess it's just the numbers,
- 28:48because my head at that point then thinks,
- 28:51do you run into a potential
- 28:53issue where some sanctionals
- 28:56are not even able to take
- 28:59however many people are
- 28:59trying to attend right
- 29:03right so that's that's kind
- 29:05of my head was thinking
- 29:06about that and um yeah
- 29:09jamie's with me go wherever
- 29:10you want all if you want
- 29:12yeah and I mean look let's
- 29:15not get it twisted if
- 29:17that's what it is I'm
- 29:21getting jacob a plane ticket to africa
- 29:25Like, sorry.
- 29:27Right.
- 29:27But I think you would be
- 29:30like three others doing the same thing.
- 29:32Sure,
- 29:32but that's a lot less than the
- 29:34fifteen that are going to
- 29:35be at each one in North
- 29:36America and the thirty that
- 29:37are going to be at the one in Europe.
- 29:40Right.
- 29:42And if that's how they do that,
- 29:43then that's fine.
- 29:43I just think it'll be
- 29:45interesting if they leave
- 29:46that completely
- 29:47laissez-faire to see if you
- 29:49end up with a sanctional that's like,
- 29:51Holy crap.
- 29:52We have so many people that we can, we,
- 29:56we have to try to send
- 29:57these people somewhere else
- 29:58because all of these athletes, you know,
- 30:01don't want to go.
- 30:01And we could probably go
- 30:02back through the
- 30:02leaderboard of like say
- 30:05quarterfinals worldwide and see like,
- 30:08okay,
- 30:08Europe may have a problem because
- 30:11they had a significant number of,
- 30:14Athletes that did very well
- 30:16in quarter like in that top
- 30:17one percent right in
- 30:19quarterfinals or something.
- 30:20Yep.
- 30:20So it'll just be interesting
- 30:21from a numbers perspective.
- 30:22I'm curious to see how that goes out.
- 30:25Yeah.
- 30:25And, you know,
- 30:28if you read the
- 30:29documentation from CrossFit,
- 30:31some sanctionals will
- 30:32qualify to some will qualify one.
- 30:36But with no explanation as
- 30:38to what that standard is to
- 30:40make you a one or two.
- 30:42Yeah.
- 30:43Well, and I mean,
- 30:44we're going to be right back in what,
- 30:46twenty nineteen or twenty twenty with.
- 30:48We're going to be right back into like,
- 30:49well,
- 30:50like the programming of this
- 30:52sanctional and the field of
- 30:54that sanctional and.
- 30:56I'm sure we'll potentially end up,
- 30:58because there's going to be
- 30:59somebody who does online semis, makes it,
- 31:01and goes to a sanctional to
- 31:02win some cash money,
- 31:03and then we're going to be
- 31:04backfilling again and that whole thing.
- 31:08The seventh place person is
- 31:09going to qualify because
- 31:10the top six already have
- 31:11their qualification.
- 31:12Right.
- 31:13Yeah.
- 31:15The good news for me is, as a podcaster,
- 31:18that gives us a lot to talk about.
- 31:19Yeah, that's true.
- 31:22We will not be starving for content.
- 31:24when all that is going on.
- 31:27Corey says,
- 31:28go back to the doc when Vellner
- 31:30wasn't really sure how he
- 31:31qualified because it was so convoluted.
- 31:34I don't think it'll be as bad.
- 31:36Well, there won't be thirty of them,
- 31:39right?
- 31:42Yeah, it's just it's.
- 31:45It's different again.
- 31:48Yeah, OK, so.
- 31:53So it sounds to me like if
- 31:54your athletes are doing the season,
- 31:57you would prefer to do an
- 31:59in-person sanction.
- 32:01Because they perform better in that.
- 32:03And it's really just a case
- 32:04by case on the athlete who
- 32:06performs better in person,
- 32:08who does better online.
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:11And where do you want to roll your dice?
- 32:16Right.
- 32:17Do you want to roll your
- 32:18dice with video review or
- 32:19do you want to roll your
- 32:20dice with the one random
- 32:23judge who hammers you with
- 32:24no reps at the wrong time in person?
- 32:28Where are you going to hedge your bet?
- 32:30And the other thing, again,
- 32:32we need to get the information of dates,
- 32:36times, locations, how to get there,
- 32:37all that.
- 32:39Because as obnoxious as it is,
- 32:44maybe you try to do both.
- 32:47Cause that's the best way to
- 32:47hedge your bet.
- 32:50Yeah.
- 32:51As,
- 32:51as many ping pong balls as you can get
- 32:53in the hopper.
- 32:54Right.
- 32:56Until we know, like, is that ideal from a,
- 32:59you know, performance peaking standpoint,
- 33:01like all the nerdy coach
- 33:03things in my brain.
- 33:04Fuck no.
- 33:05But until we get information,
- 33:08is it off the table?
- 33:09No.
- 33:11Like,
- 33:12there's a reality where that
- 33:13might be the best decision
- 33:14is to at least sign up for
- 33:17both depending on which
- 33:19ones in what order, you know,
- 33:21like all of that.
- 33:23So for a moment,
- 33:24let's just slide the season to the side.
- 33:27And now there's these
- 33:28alternatives or just other
- 33:31off season competitions
- 33:32like Metcon rush and things
- 33:34like that that happen in
- 33:36the same vicinity as the game season.
- 33:39Sure.
- 33:41Are there enough of those
- 33:42opportunities for your athletes who,
- 33:48to be frank, are not in the Pat Vellner,
- 33:52Justin Medeiros level yet, right?
- 33:54That can go to any of those
- 33:57they want because of their
- 33:58name recognition at this point, right?
- 34:01Right.
- 34:03Are there enough of those
- 34:05for your athletes to build confidence and
- 34:09get better, race,
- 34:13and maybe make some money along the way?
- 34:19I think there's enough,
- 34:20but I think there's also
- 34:22the need and I think there will be more.
- 34:26And I think what might have
- 34:30been happening is a lot of
- 34:32us just weren't paying attention to them.
- 34:37Example.
- 34:38And again, all of this exists,
- 34:42like all of this exists on a spectrum,
- 34:44right?
- 34:45If you're Pat Vellner and
- 34:46the payout's not twenty five K plus,
- 34:49you're probably not interested.
- 34:52Right.
- 34:52If the payout's not thirty plus,
- 34:54you're probably just not interested.
- 34:57But depending on where
- 34:59you're at as an athlete,
- 35:01what your travel schedule looks like,
- 35:02how much you enjoy competing,
- 35:03what your real job looks like,
- 35:05because you're
- 35:07Most of them still have real jobs.
- 35:09Right.
- 35:11As an example, like Turkey challenge,
- 35:13their payout for first in
- 35:16elite was five K. It's not
- 35:21bad for a two day call.
- 35:23Yep.
- 35:24Right.
- 35:24They had Jacob was there.
- 35:26Drake Lewis was there.
- 35:28They had a couple other
- 35:29decent quarterfinals guys who were there.
- 35:31Kevin shoots was there.
- 35:32He's been on teams a bunch of times,
- 35:34been to the games before.
- 35:35So it's like,
- 35:37Those are small names
- 35:39relative to the big names
- 35:40that we all talk about.
- 35:42But these other competitions
- 35:44are the ones who are
- 35:45potentially going to
- 35:46supplement these athletes
- 35:49and keep them engaged with
- 35:51something to do while they
- 35:53work toward the level of
- 35:54prestige that gets you a
- 35:56Wadapalooza invite or a –
- 35:58you know, whatever invite.
- 36:00So it's,
- 36:01I think there's more smaller
- 36:02competitions.
- 36:03We may not have given, you know,
- 36:05a fair look, you know,
- 36:07why gods was a three K cash prize.
- 36:09Like that's not bad money.
- 36:11I don't remember what desert city was,
- 36:13but so there's,
- 36:15I think there's a disconnect.
- 36:16I think there's a,
- 36:17there's a big difference
- 36:19between the athletes who
- 36:22have been successful at this enough,
- 36:24this long enough that it is
- 36:26how they make their living.
- 36:28They're only going to be
- 36:29interested in things that
- 36:31give them a really large chunk of change.
- 36:36And then there's the other
- 36:38cohort of athletes,
- 36:38and you could say that's
- 36:40low games all the way down
- 36:44to low semifinals slash
- 36:46high quarterfinals.
- 36:48who are probably going to
- 36:50find a decent value
- 36:51proposition in going to
- 36:54smaller uh what do you call
- 36:56it the mid-major majors the
- 36:59mid-majors the
- 37:00up-and-coming mid-majors um
- 37:03to make a couple thousand
- 37:05bucks right um and and to
- 37:08use those things to set up
- 37:09some sort of a season as
- 37:12well I I know like
- 37:16I don't know a lot of
- 37:17athletes at this point who
- 37:18really love competing online.
- 37:22I think as a community,
- 37:23we've really like people
- 37:25just don't love it.
- 37:27We understand it as of now
- 37:29is a necessary part of it
- 37:32for qualification to most events,
- 37:34but people want to compete in person.
- 37:37They want to compete.
- 37:38Let me add on to that with a question.
- 37:42How hard is it going to be
- 37:43to tell this year that,
- 37:45who we lose in open
- 37:47registrations because of a
- 37:50moral decision and how many,
- 37:53because they're just not
- 37:54doing the online thing or
- 37:57they don't have the, they,
- 37:59their goal of making
- 38:00quarterfinals has been
- 38:01taken away or those types of things,
- 38:05right?
- 38:05You have this mixed bag and
- 38:07we're not going to be able
- 38:07to tell what the root cause
- 38:09of any of that was.
- 38:12I don't think there's a way
- 38:13you can know unless you
- 38:14send out some sort of a
- 38:15blanket survey to every
- 38:18email that CrossFit has in
- 38:20their database somewhere.
- 38:22But I agree.
- 38:23I think I would expect a
- 38:26decrease in open
- 38:27participation to some degree.
- 38:30And I think it is going to
- 38:32be a conflux of people very
- 38:38unhappy with how
- 38:40the games was handled and
- 38:42the events of the games and
- 38:44people also disgruntled
- 38:45about the season changes.
- 38:49And some, for some people it's combination,
- 38:51right?
- 38:52And I feel like the
- 38:53combination is a lot of those people like,
- 38:57like Pat, like other people, you know,
- 39:00people who are in the PFA
- 39:01or leadership of the PFA or
- 39:03those things there,
- 39:05they're just kind of
- 39:06blanket pissed off right now.
- 39:08Um,
- 39:14okay so now we move back
- 39:17let's go back to the game
- 39:18season and then we get to
- 39:20the games we are cutting
- 39:22from forty to thirty and
- 39:26from thirty some to twenty
- 39:29teams right good or bad for CrossFit
- 39:44I would say I think in totality bad.
- 39:50That's just my opinion.
- 39:56Thirty individuals at the
- 39:58games is not outlandish.
- 40:05But again,
- 40:07they're probably going to still do cuts.
- 40:10you're gonna have thirty and
- 40:11then you have twenty and
- 40:12then you have like ten
- 40:13people for the last two
- 40:14days and I just think
- 40:15you're limiting limiting
- 40:18the stories and limiting
- 40:19the people and limiting you
- 40:23know for people who people
- 40:25for the fans to cheer for
- 40:27and things like that um
- 40:31just to add on and maybe it
- 40:32gives you something to
- 40:33think about my my positive
- 40:36of getting rid of regions
- 40:38is for the first time we
- 40:40have the opportunity to get
- 40:42whatever number that is
- 40:43best to the games.
- 40:46Sure.
- 40:47Because of regions,
- 40:48people got in that really
- 40:50had no business competing
- 40:51against some of the elite athletes.
- 40:53A couple, yeah.
- 40:55So now you feel that with
- 40:59everybody who did earn it,
- 41:03legitimately against
- 41:05everybody in the world,
- 41:08And who could shake up the
- 41:10leaderboard on any given event?
- 41:17In theory.
- 41:21So I don't like the cut from
- 41:23forty to thirty.
- 41:24Yeah.
- 41:25Because we never gave it a
- 41:26shot with a real legit forty.
- 41:30I just I don't know what you
- 41:31gain from thirty that you
- 41:33don't have with forty.
- 41:36Logistically,
- 41:38it's not a crazy difference to me.
- 41:44And I'm not the one on the back end.
- 41:45I'm not the one planning stuff.
- 41:47Just outside looking in.
- 41:53The team side,
- 41:55I mean... I don't have a lot
- 42:03of confidence teams will be
- 42:04a thing in twenty twenty six.
- 42:11The only way to even go is
- 42:13through the online semifinal.
- 42:18And I'm hopeful,
- 42:19because I was thinking
- 42:20about this side thing,
- 42:23but from an event perspective,
- 42:26I'm hoping that the
- 42:28sanctionals will run a
- 42:30four-person team competition as well.
- 42:35what are you going to do?
- 42:35You're going to run a
- 42:36competition for four heats
- 42:37of individual men and women.
- 42:38And that's it.
- 42:40I think the idea is to do a
- 42:41community event alongside it.
- 42:43Well, you need that to some degree as well,
- 42:45but you're going to pay for it.
- 42:47Right.
- 42:47Exactly.
- 42:48But I, I would,
- 42:49I would hope that maybe
- 42:51some of them do something
- 42:53in person for teams of four
- 42:56and they can choose, you know,
- 42:58maybe they have to do a
- 43:00certain thing in the open
- 43:01or an online semifinal or
- 43:02they have their own company, you know,
- 43:03whatever.
- 43:04Um,
- 43:06But I mean,
- 43:08that's not a hard one to just go look at.
- 43:11And again, to your point,
- 43:12you will have the twenty
- 43:13best teams for sure.
- 43:16But Oslo only gets one now.
- 43:20Right.
- 43:21Five.
- 43:23Yeah.
- 43:24Till they go make another affiliate.
- 43:26Sure.
- 43:27I mean, that's what I mean.
- 43:29That's what I would do if I had the money.
- 43:36Somebody said it on one of the podcasts.
- 43:39They're going to affiliate Rich's Barn.
- 43:42Why not?
- 43:46Mayhem truly only had one
- 43:47representative from their main gym.
- 43:50Yes, that's true.
- 43:50All the other people with
- 43:51Mayhem in the name do their programming.
- 43:54Yeah.
- 43:57Corey says,
- 43:57I got to do a minicamp with a
- 43:59team that's trying to make the games.
- 44:00They are less than excited.
- 44:06I don't know many people
- 44:08I've discussed this with
- 44:10that are athletes that are
- 44:13really excited
- 44:17unfortunately so so now
- 44:22we're running out of time
- 44:23as I have a meeting this
- 44:24afternoon um but I want a
- 44:27couple more questions
- 44:28before we let you go and
- 44:29that is now that all this
- 44:32has been announced at this
- 44:33level and there's still so
- 44:34much more to get to know
- 44:37It seems like there's
- 44:38definitely going to be a
- 44:39divide going into the season.
- 44:42How big that divide is.
- 44:44No clue.
- 44:45Right.
- 44:46But it is becoming
- 44:47abundantly clear that there
- 44:48are some people that are
- 44:49going to go one way and
- 44:51some that are going another way.
- 44:54Can CrossFit survive?
- 44:56Can CrossFit the sport
- 44:59survive that divide?
- 45:03I think so, yes.
- 45:05So I put this on – somebody
- 45:08asked me about that on my
- 45:09Instagram story like a week or two ago.
- 45:12And the way I've put it to
- 45:14my athletes is the cat is
- 45:17out of the bag at this point.
- 45:19People like to exercise fast.
- 45:21People like to see what
- 45:22they're capable of.
- 45:23People like to watch it.
- 45:24People like to coach it.
- 45:26People like to talk about it, right?
- 45:28I don't – if the competitive
- 45:30sport of CrossFit dies –
- 45:33It's because we let it.
- 45:37We are so used to CrossFit slash the NFL,
- 45:43right, running this for us.
- 45:45And it's been great.
- 45:47For whatever reason,
- 45:48whether we like it or not,
- 45:50they're backing out.
- 45:52They're pulling back.
- 45:55So what are you going to do?
- 45:59just going to let it go or like,
- 46:01or are we going to figure it out?
- 46:03And I think there's enough
- 46:04people who care about this enough,
- 46:06who like this enough,
- 46:07who enjoy this enough.
- 46:10And a lot of people who have
- 46:11been doing this for a long time,
- 46:12event organizers, coaches, you know,
- 46:15brands, all of these things.
- 46:19I think it will survive.
- 46:21I think it'll get weird.
- 46:22It's going to be weird for a
- 46:23little bit potentially.
- 46:25Um,
- 46:28But I don't see a reason why
- 46:30it has to die because of this divergence.
- 46:40So I'm having a hard time myself,
- 46:42like wrapping my head around this.
- 46:45When I first started CrossFit,
- 46:46it was two thousand eleven.
- 46:48My first open was twenty thirteen.
- 46:50And when I did that,
- 46:51it was such a significant
- 46:53step for me to even put
- 46:55myself... Because there was
- 46:57no scale division back then.
- 46:58Right.
- 47:00It was all or nothing, go do the Open.
- 47:04But in some weird, twisted way,
- 47:07it made me feel like I was
- 47:09competing with Rich Froning.
- 47:10Mm-hmm.
- 47:12Right.
- 47:15And I don't know if we've
- 47:16lost that completely because...
- 47:20so many people are dogging
- 47:21on what the open is now in
- 47:26the open was electric it
- 47:29was everything and I felt
- 47:32like I was competing
- 47:33against jason kalipa and
- 47:35rich froning and all of
- 47:37those guys chris peeler and
- 47:39even though I had no the
- 47:40snowball's chance in hell
- 47:42of even seeing their name
- 47:43anywhere near me on the
- 47:44leaderboard sure yeah right
- 47:47I I don't get the sense
- 47:50from my community that
- 47:51that's how they feel now.
- 47:58And do we need that feeling
- 48:00to keep CrossFit as a sport
- 48:03or is it that it's grown to
- 48:05a point where we just have to,
- 48:10we either have to fall back
- 48:11to what we were or take a
- 48:12step into something new?
- 48:19That's a hard question to answer.
- 48:22I think we're better off
- 48:24when it's that way because
- 48:27the community is involved.
- 48:30And this is probably a
- 48:31completely separate podcast.
- 48:32I have three ideas that we
- 48:36started on that we need to develop.
- 48:38So I hope you're open the next month.
- 48:41I am.
- 48:42I am.
- 48:44The athletes became what they had to.
- 48:49to be successful in the
- 48:54climate they were in.
- 48:56I was thinking about this
- 48:57because I don't remember
- 48:59what I was listening to,
- 48:59but somebody just kept bringing up like,
- 49:01dude,
- 49:01the athletes don't even train in the
- 49:03gyms anymore.
- 49:05You're right.
- 49:06As somebody who has co-owned
- 49:07an affiliate and who has
- 49:10spent a lot of time in affiliates,
- 49:12do you know why a lot of
- 49:13athletes don't train in
- 49:14affiliates anymore?
- 49:16They're not allowed to do
- 49:17their own programming.
- 49:19in the gym when there's a
- 49:20class going on or there's not space,
- 49:23right?
- 49:24Or the owner of the gym
- 49:25doesn't want that because
- 49:28it creates a divide.
- 49:30And people are blaming that
- 49:31on the athletes.
- 49:32And I don't think that's fair.
- 49:35If Rich didn't start
- 49:36training twice a day and
- 49:37then start blowing
- 49:37everybody out of the water
- 49:38and then everybody started
- 49:39training twice a day to keep up with him,
- 49:41nobody would train twice a day.
- 49:43The athletes became what
- 49:45they had to because of the
- 49:46demands of the sport.
- 49:48then the demands of the
- 49:49ecosystem so then the that
- 49:51started the removal from
- 49:53the community and let me
- 49:54jump on that because we
- 49:56have sometimes our memory
- 49:58is we think about all the
- 50:00the gumdrops and rainbows
- 50:01sure how many to the videos
- 50:05prove it how many times did
- 50:06rich work out in his dad's garage
- 50:09All the time.
- 50:10Right.
- 50:11Like he wasn't working out at his own.
- 50:13Right.
- 50:14Right.
- 50:15For all the training.
- 50:17It's a hard thing to reconcile.
- 50:19And I'm not saying like
- 50:21affiliate owners or coaches
- 50:22or gym owners or whatever
- 50:23in the wrong for.
- 50:25you know if you only have a
- 50:26so many square foot gym
- 50:27yeah you can't have
- 50:28freaking somebody over
- 50:29there with a yoke and a
- 50:30sled and the the rings in
- 50:32the middle of class like
- 50:33it's incredibly you have
- 50:34paying customers right they
- 50:36get first dibs right a
- 50:38hundred percent but I like
- 50:40I don't think it's fair for us to say
- 50:44Oh, well,
- 50:44the athletes need to get back
- 50:46into the community because
- 50:47then that's going to impact
- 50:48the gym owners.
- 50:49Bottom line, right?
- 50:50Like I, like I don't,
- 50:54I think it is better when
- 50:55the athletes are integrated
- 50:56in the community in that,
- 50:58in what the open was in twenty thirteen,
- 51:00twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen.
- 51:01I remember my first open in
- 51:02twenty fifteen.
- 51:03It was nuts.
- 51:04Like it was just I just
- 51:05remember pain and a good time.
- 51:07Right.
- 51:08But.
- 51:11Things have changed because
- 51:13the ecosystem has changed.
- 51:14The sport has changed.
- 51:15The athletes have changed.
- 51:16The demand has changed.
- 51:18So I think community
- 51:20integration is probably good,
- 51:22but I don't know if we can
- 51:24go back to the way it was,
- 51:28if that makes sense.
- 51:29So I don't know if a big
- 51:32step back is going to work.
- 51:37so and and I agree with you
- 51:39I think we're kind of at
- 51:41any small small business
- 51:42that grows hits a point
- 51:44where they have to either
- 51:46go all in and step up to a
- 51:48new thing or fail and fall back right
- 51:53And CrossFit,
- 51:55we've said it's a niche sport.
- 51:56It's not in the mainstream.
- 51:59So it's still a small
- 52:00business trying to figure it out.
- 52:03And what is the next step?
- 52:05And as we were talking,
- 52:06I said there's tons of things.
- 52:08As we were describing the
- 52:09mid-majors and then the
- 52:11water paloozas and the rogues,
- 52:13when you explain that,
- 52:14in my head I see the PGA Tour,
- 52:20the nationwide tour.
- 52:21Sure.
- 52:21Yeah.
- 52:22You know,
- 52:22all those like different segments
- 52:25of ways to advance up through the tours.
- 52:28Right.
- 52:29But someone has to take the
- 52:32time to map out those opportunities.
- 52:35Sure.
- 52:36And it,
- 52:37and it seems like at this point
- 52:39we're just scattered into
- 52:40different directions and
- 52:41nobody is trying to say,
- 52:43this is all the stuff we have.
- 52:45If we just connect these
- 52:46dots and then these dots, you have,
- 52:51you have something to shoot for.
- 52:53Yeah.
- 52:54Right.
- 52:55And I think that's another podcast.
- 52:57Yeah, for sure.
- 52:58Right.
- 53:01But yeah, it's interesting.
- 53:02So I'm going to open the
- 53:05floor to you in the last five minutes.
- 53:10If there's anything
- 53:11overarching that's been
- 53:13announced in the last month
- 53:16that you feel strongly
- 53:18about and that you want to share.
- 53:23anything announced in the
- 53:24last month that I feel
- 53:26strongly about maybe one
- 53:36good thing you liked from
- 53:38what crossfit announced
- 53:40we've talked about a lot
- 53:41about the bad I like that
- 53:46they didn't fire dave okay
- 53:50that's a strong statement these days
- 53:56I don't think that it's fair
- 54:00to say that he doesn't care
- 54:01about the athletes.
- 54:02And I think there's a lot of
- 54:04data to back that up.
- 54:06Not saying he's perfect.
- 54:08Oh, he's, yeah.
- 54:09Not saying he's perfect.
- 54:12But I don't think that's a
- 54:14fair assessment.
- 54:16Um, I, and I will back that up.
- 54:18I was a volunteer.
- 54:20I've seen that man work behind the scenes.
- 54:22I've seen how meticulous he
- 54:24is about everything.
- 54:27He, he cares a lot.
- 54:31I always know how to show it.
- 54:32I think, uh, and, and I'll be,
- 54:35I'll be fair to, to counter, you know,
- 54:39people are going to
- 54:39disagree with me on this
- 54:40because I think I do have a
- 54:41little bit of a, uh,
- 54:44not proximity bias.
- 54:45It wouldn't be the right way
- 54:46to describe it.
- 54:47But, you know, I was in the military.
- 54:49And Dave was in the military.
- 54:53He was in a leadership
- 54:54position in the military.
- 54:55He's been in a very big
- 54:56leadership position in
- 54:58CrossFit for a really long time.
- 55:03I don't know... For people
- 55:08to react the way they did
- 55:10and say the thing... Like,
- 55:11to try to put...
- 55:13words in his mouth about
- 55:15what happened I don't think
- 55:19anybody has probably stayed
- 55:20awake more nights outside
- 55:22of the family than dave if
- 55:27I had to if I had to guess
- 55:29and again that is a
- 55:30potential bias because I
- 55:33understand the way that
- 55:35people who are in the
- 55:35military take those kind of
- 55:37things when you're in a
- 55:38leadership position um
- 55:42But I would say another good
- 55:45thing is I'm a fan of the
- 55:49increased judging course
- 55:52and the public video review.
- 55:54I think that's a fabulous
- 55:56step in the right direction.
- 55:58They'll have to deliver on
- 56:00that with actually
- 56:01penalizing and those things.
- 56:04But I like that.
- 56:10I'm going to piggyback on
- 56:11your Dave thing one more time.
- 56:13While I've seen him work his
- 56:14ass off backstage,
- 56:16I have been critical of him
- 56:19at times where I do think
- 56:22that the sport has resisted
- 56:27advancement because...
- 56:32there's one man kind of running the show.
- 56:35Sure.
- 56:36Right.
- 56:37And,
- 56:37and my example to that is take rogue
- 56:40and some of the innovations
- 56:41that they have come up with
- 56:42in the way they put on a competition,
- 56:46simple thing like an,
- 56:48an enhanced streaming
- 56:50service that you can pay for.
- 56:52Yeah.
- 56:54CrossFit hasn't even looked into that.
- 56:56Right.
- 56:57Right.
- 56:58Right.
- 56:59Um,
- 57:01investing money into bitcoin
- 57:03and the all of a sudden the
- 57:05price first goes way up
- 57:07right you can see this
- 57:09company over here trying
- 57:10all these new things and
- 57:13you can use that analogy to
- 57:14football where like the xfl
- 57:15wasn't great football but
- 57:17they had great innovation
- 57:19right right and that the
- 57:21nfl had ended up adopting a
- 57:23handful of things that the
- 57:24xfl came up with
- 57:27that were brilliant.
- 57:29And when Dave makes the statement, like,
- 57:31I don't watch water Palooza,
- 57:33I don't watch.
- 57:33Right.
- 57:34Right.
- 57:35Right.
- 57:35You're,
- 57:35you're missing out on some of the
- 57:37innovations that these
- 57:38other comps are coming up with.
- 57:39Yeah.
- 57:40Like reps ahead.
- 57:41We just talked about it.
- 57:42The rep counters on the, on the lanes.
- 57:49That's that is where I have been.
- 57:52That is where I've been critical of Dave.
- 57:55Yeah.
- 57:55And I think that's fair.
- 57:57Right.
- 57:57And it's, I mean, but I don't,
- 58:00I don't think he should have been fired,
- 58:04but I don't necessarily
- 58:06believe that they shouldn't
- 58:06have hired him help.
- 58:08Sure.
- 58:09I would agree with that.
- 58:11Right.
- 58:12And I think there's just, I mean,
- 58:16there's so much that we don't know.
- 58:18Um,
- 58:20I, you know, there's information that,
- 58:23you know, maybe if I knew,
- 58:24then maybe I might would
- 58:26change my mind on if Dave
- 58:29should have been fired or
- 58:29should have not been fired.
- 58:30Right.
- 58:31If we actually got the full
- 58:32investigation report,
- 58:33depending on what's in there.
- 58:34I just think with the information we have,
- 58:36that's kind of,
- 58:38and I think that a lot of
- 58:41people are very quick to
- 58:44just become a mob mentality.
- 58:47Um,
- 58:50and if I was gonna say
- 58:51something not related to
- 58:52CrossFit that I do think I
- 58:53wish and this is just
- 58:55humans in general could be
- 58:56better at is just waiting
- 58:59before they speak um yeah
- 59:05um I had a thought oh my my
- 59:12last my final thought for
- 59:13today because it's been a
- 59:14long time since I've talked
- 59:15about a lot of this stuff
- 59:18The year that CrossFit
- 59:20needed to come out with all
- 59:22the details on their season
- 59:24and come out with it in
- 59:25plenty of time for people
- 59:27to make decisions was this year.
- 59:29Yeah.
- 59:32And they have really dropped the ball.
- 59:35Yeah.
- 59:36Yeah.
- 59:36And it's not because I can't
- 59:39make my decision because
- 59:41I'm going to sign up for
- 59:41the Open because I believe in it.
- 59:44And I want to support the
- 59:45open and it will be what it is.
- 59:48But there are a lot of
- 59:49people coming after you.
- 59:51And this was the year you
- 59:53needed everything tightened up.
- 59:55Yeah.
- 59:56With plenty of news ahead of
- 59:58time for people to make
- 59:59decisions and to see that
- 1:00:01there might have been a
- 1:00:02slight change in the way
- 1:00:04that you communicate with the community.
- 1:00:07Yeah.
- 1:00:10And so far that has not happened.
- 1:00:12I mean,
- 1:00:12we're not even getting the rulebook
- 1:00:13until after the new year.
- 1:00:14I'm sorry, coughed till after the win.
- 1:00:19New Year.
- 1:00:20Oh, wow.
- 1:00:22I had responded to I think
- 1:00:24CrossFit affiliates made a post.
- 1:00:26And I asked something about the rulebook.
- 1:00:28And I if I'm remembering correctly,
- 1:00:30they said it would be after the new year.
- 1:00:33So two thumbs up for that.
- 1:00:37Awesome.
- 1:00:39Well, Corey says,
- 1:00:41Tristan is a strong dude.
- 1:00:43I imagine he and I hitting a
- 1:00:44workout and jamming to some Creed.
- 1:00:48I do like me some Creed.
- 1:00:50I don't know if I'm strong anymore.
- 1:00:52I used to be a little bit stronger,
- 1:00:53but I just try to stay fit
- 1:00:55and healthy these days.
- 1:00:57Well,
- 1:00:58what I'm going to leave you with is
- 1:00:59I'm really seriously
- 1:01:00considering doing an
- 1:01:01everyday show into the new year.
- 1:01:05How I'm going to ramp that
- 1:01:06up through December, I'm not sure yet.
- 1:01:08But essentially, it's going to be,
- 1:01:10I'm just going to jump on
- 1:01:10every day at noon.
- 1:01:12If any of my friends want to join,
- 1:01:15they are welcome to jump in and we talk.
- 1:01:22It could be any,
- 1:01:23and it's going to be any topic.
- 1:01:24It could be this week's Landman episode.
- 1:01:27It could be the Big Ten
- 1:01:29Championship going on tomorrow.
- 1:01:30It could be CrossFit.
- 1:01:32It could be whatever.
- 1:01:34But just an everyday get
- 1:01:36together with me and my
- 1:01:37friends and an open invite to jump in.
- 1:01:42You will,
- 1:01:43you will have that open invite from me.
- 1:01:45I would love to hop on.
- 1:01:48So I think going into the,
- 1:01:49I may do like maybe three
- 1:01:51shows a week to start in December.
- 1:01:54And then when we get into the new year,
- 1:01:56start ramping up to five days a week.
- 1:01:57That'd be cool.
- 1:01:58That would be cool.
- 1:02:00And that would truly be my
- 1:02:02lunch hour from work.
- 1:02:04Right.
- 1:02:04Just spending your lunch
- 1:02:05hour just hanging out.
- 1:02:07Yeah.
- 1:02:07And if you want to bring
- 1:02:08food and we just hang out
- 1:02:09and talk and whatever, it is what it is.
- 1:02:12But that's the plan going
- 1:02:14into the new year.
- 1:02:15In addition to we'll be back to interviews,
- 1:02:17of course,
- 1:02:18our roundtable every Thursday
- 1:02:20and our Sunday night show
- 1:02:21every Sunday night.
- 1:02:22But just a shoot the shit
- 1:02:25show every day at noon.
- 1:02:28There's plenty to talk about.
- 1:02:30yeah always well thanks a
- 1:02:33bunch tristan for doing
- 1:02:34this um and again we do
- 1:02:36have some other topics we
- 1:02:37we need to expand on so
- 1:02:39maybe through december
- 1:02:40we'll have a couple more of
- 1:02:40these shows um and with
- 1:02:43that everybody have a great
- 1:02:45friday uh go penn state
- 1:02:47tomorrow night against
- 1:02:48oregon in the big ten
- 1:02:49championship game and
- 1:02:51sunday is my first game as
- 1:02:53a bears fan with the new
- 1:02:54head coach thomas brown
- 1:02:56yeah um and so I get to check that out
- 1:02:58Those are things we'd be
- 1:02:59talking about too.
- 1:03:00Yeah.
- 1:03:03But I have a big sports
- 1:03:04weekend ahead of me.
- 1:03:05Best of luck.
- 1:03:06And I did catch the first
- 1:03:08event of Dubai last night
- 1:03:09at like two in the morning
- 1:03:10when I couldn't sleep.
- 1:03:12I did not.
- 1:03:12What was it?
- 1:03:13The bike?
- 1:03:15It was the bike.
- 1:03:15It put me to sleep pretty fast.
- 1:03:20Beautiful location.
- 1:03:22Beautiful location.
- 1:03:24But if you can't see the meter,
- 1:03:27what's the point?
- 1:03:29again like reps ahead tv
- 1:03:31screen that shows like what
- 1:03:33the the watts are oh my
- 1:03:36gosh I was like okay this
- 1:03:38will get me right back to
- 1:03:39bed yeah um I'll just save
- 1:03:43my thoughts on that for
- 1:03:45another time okay with that
- 1:03:49hit to everybody next time
- 1:03:50guys thank you to everybody
- 1:03:51in the chat for being here
