Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, let's hop into today's bonus episode talking
- 0:36about podcast from around the country.
- 0:38Gentlemen, why don't we start, introduce yourself, maybe kind
- 0:40of a 32nd, 30,000 foot level, who you are and what you bring
- 0:44to this sport here, and then tell us the name of your
- 0:47podcast. I'm Jason Ratz.
- 0:50I'm from Illinois. Here.
- 0:52I'm like 15 miles away from you, Mike.
- 0:55I coach at a small school, St. Joe Ogden, not a Catholic
- 0:57school. Been coaching for 20 years now.
- 1:01Got into this with the intent to just help people out the way I
- 1:07was helping myself. Yeah, my name is Eric Dettman.
- 1:11I live out in Portland, OR, but I actually grew up in Illinois,
- 1:14went to York High School and I now coach at Lincoln High School
- 1:18in Portland, OR. So I've been doing that for 12
- 1:20years and just really love being around the kids.
- 1:23And my biggest thing when I get asked like, why do you coach is
- 1:26is just around, you know, watching that light bulb, light
- 1:30bulb go off and and seeing kids, you know, identify as runners
- 1:34who maybe once didn't. And that's really exciting.
- 1:36That's awesome. So you're you're a York Duke,
- 1:38Are you the long Green Line? I was in the long green line.
- 1:43I love that. That's awesome.
- 1:44That's awesome. Well, Jim, but tell us the name
- 1:46of your podcast and then give us the style.
- 1:48Is it you 2? Normally I'd call it like a solo
- 1:50podcast, but is it YouTube? Do you have guest?
- 1:52Tell us a little bit about that. So we are called the Low Stick
- 1:57Podcast. It's just the two of us.
- 1:59So during COVID we got to know each other pretty well and we
- 2:04talked about some of the podcasts and the things were
- 2:06that were out there. We have a short 30 minute
- 2:09podcast. We try to keep it right about 30
- 2:11minutes so that teachers or whoever that are also coaching
- 2:14could sit and listen to it on their prep.
- 2:17Sometimes you have a longer podcast and it takes a couple
- 2:20different chunks to sit and listen to them.
- 2:21So we try to condense it down into 30 minutes and we talked
- 2:24about a variety of different topics.
- 2:26People reach out to us. We try to address those topics
- 2:29the best we can. Whatever ideas I've got are Eric
- 2:33Scott. We try to jump on them right
- 2:36away. Yeah, we're found on Spotify and
- 2:39and YouTube primarily. I love that you because you
- 2:42know, one of my questions is the average length and I love how
- 2:45your intentionality on that average length of, you know,
- 2:47prep periods and you know, maybe a car ride home or something
- 2:50that I love that intentionality. What's the significance of the
- 2:53name the low stick podcast? I thought you were going to be
- 2:56This would be like my high jump PR, but it has to be more than
- 2:59that. So low stick and cross country
- 3:02is somebody that's up towards the front and when back in the
- 3:06day scoring, you used to get a popsicle stick when you cross
- 3:09the line and would have the number one when you were first
- 3:11place. So low stick refers to having
- 3:14low stick during cross country or I guess in in track if you
- 3:18were finishing in a distance race across the line.
- 3:21Yeah, ironically, the first time Jason brought it up to me, I was
- 3:23like, oh, I think that sounds good, but I didn't understand
- 3:25it. But I didn't have the heart to
- 3:26tell him that because I was like, I feel like I should
- 3:30understand this. I initially thought it was like
- 3:33a baton, like under four by one exchange rather than coming over
- 3:38the top. And I'm like, I don't
- 3:39understand. Then I thought about it a little
- 3:41further. I'm like, oh, now I understand.
- 3:42So yes, that's where the Low Stick podcast.
- 3:45And that which I think is. Perfect for distance coaches.
- 3:47Love it. Now I understand why I didn't
- 3:49get it either because when I finished cross country they had
- 3:51to tape four of those popsicle sticks together to write my
- 3:54number. So I was the the high stick, if
- 3:57you will. So talk to us.
- 4:00You know, you've been doing this for a while now.
- 4:02Have you kept your original idea, original form of the
- 4:06podcast? Is it kind of elevated that way
- 4:08or have you had any kind of drastic changes?
- 4:11Yeah, it's pretty similar from from the get go.
- 4:13We always so we communicate ahead of time of what we think
- 4:15are some interesting topics. We've been really fortunate that
- 4:18we've had people who have reached out via text, e-mail,
- 4:20whatever to give us some topics or some things that they'd be
- 4:23interested in talking about. We always decide who's going to
- 4:26take the lead. So sometimes it's Jason,
- 4:28sometimes it's myself. But what I think I really enjoy
- 4:32about our kind of our flow is there is no flow.
- 4:35Like there's not a set set of questions that we've got.
- 4:37We're just bouncing ideas off of each other, talking about what
- 4:40how we feel about this or that. And sometimes we agree.
- 4:44I would say sometimes you don't. Right. 50% of the time we're
- 4:46probably disagreeing on things, but that's awesome.
- 4:48Rather than just two people. Yeah.
- 4:49That's great, Jason. Yeah.
- 4:50You're so smart, Jason. Yeah, that's really wonderful,
- 4:52Jason. Giving different perspectives in
- 4:54different perspectives too. Like Jason's at a a small school
- 4:57in and, you know, southern Illinois and not that I'm a big
- 5:00school, but fourteen, well, central whatever.
- 5:02Yeah, I know. Or a big school like me, biggish
- 5:07with 1500 kids, you know, So it's offering those
- 5:10perspectives, but we really try to stick to the same script
- 5:12every time, which is that 30 minutes and and really playing
- 5:15off each other. You, you kind of alluded to
- 5:18this, but you know, in, in business like for us here, Gil,
- 5:21a lot of different people will buy products from us.
- 5:23We'll have moms and dads, obviously we have coaches,
- 5:25athletic directors, contractors, but our ideal customer like who
- 5:30we target on new product ideas, marketing, etcetera, are high
- 5:33school and college track coaches.
- 5:36For you guys, who is your ideal listener profile?
- 5:40So many, many people might listen.
- 5:41Athletes, parents, coaches. Sounds like you.
- 5:45You have a pretty distinct person in mind that you're
- 5:47speaking to. Yeah, often times we try to talk
- 5:51to coaches that are looking for new ideas or maybe new into it.
- 5:54But we've also reached out as far as we put a parent episode
- 5:58together. So something that a coach could
- 6:00share with a parent maybe maybe like that second parent idea
- 6:05where sometimes a kid won't listen to one parent but will
- 6:08listen to the other one. We kind of threw that out there
- 6:11because maybe coaches and we got some feedback, maybe coaches
- 6:14will send it to their parents because they're going to hear
- 6:16the same thing from us that they're going to hear from those
- 6:18coaches and it's kind of a way to reinforce what they're doing.
- 6:20So primarily we we try to stick to coaches and I can't even say
- 6:25new coaches, the coaches that listen, We have some very great
- 6:30coaches almost humbled to hear that.
- 6:32Some of them reach out and listen every time, but we try to
- 6:36just draw on new information that we find and try to kind of
- 6:40update how we screw things up and get things right along the
- 6:43way as well. What has been, and maybe each of
- 6:47you can take this one as well, what's been your favorite
- 6:50episode for whatever reason? And then kind of piggyback in
- 6:53that, what has maybe been the most popular episode as far as
- 6:56maybe the most listens or watches that you've had?
- 6:59Yeah, I'll let Jason answer the most popular just because he
- 7:02kind of looks at the numbers more than I do.
- 7:05I think we have found a trend that our our training when we go
- 7:08into specifics and training has historically been our most
- 7:11popular episodes or most listened to whether it's talking
- 7:13about threshold or speed or things like that.
- 7:17We did one, I don't think it was last month, I think it was two
- 7:22months ago, just called it's hard.
- 7:24And we talked about it being hard from a coach's perspective,
- 7:26a parent's perspective and an athlete's perspective.
- 7:29And I think a lot of times, you know, social media, often times
- 7:33you just see the good, you see the perfect person in a bikini.
- 7:37You see, you know, this magical vacation in Italy, You see the,
- 7:42the, the perfect life with 17 friends around you all
- 7:45collectively having a beer. But you don't often see the
- 7:48hardship and you don't hear about the hardship.
- 7:51And we really wanted to focus on that and talk about like, this
- 7:53is this sport is hard, right? I talk to my kids about this all
- 7:55the time. We're going to ask so much of
- 7:57you. We're going to start training in
- 7:58June with the hope that we can win a trophy of the state meet
- 8:02with the hope that we can qualify for NXN.
- 8:03But there's no guarantee that's going to happen.
- 8:05And we're going to ask you to do it anyways.
- 8:07And that's really tough for a 1415 sixteen 17 year old kid to
- 8:10dive into the deep end like that and and to put themselves out in
- 8:13in that way. And and we talked about that and
- 8:16I think that was a really for me, a really awesome podcast
- 8:19because it is it is really hard. All facets.
- 8:22Athlete, parent, coach, true. Yeah, I agree.
- 8:26Some of our training episodes are the most popular and they're
- 8:28kind of fun to jump in and listen to each other's ideas.
- 8:32Eric is self-proclaimed, not great at training models, but
- 8:35like he's really good at thinking outside the box on how
- 8:38to get done, what needs to get done.
- 8:40And so I, I'm like the scientists of the group, I can
- 8:43tell you, you know how many, how many millimoles and all that
- 8:45stuff. But like we blend together so
- 8:47well when we talk about those things.
- 8:48So I enjoy, I kind of enjoy talking about the training just
- 8:54because I think from an outsider's perspective, when
- 8:56they listen to it, they can see both sides of the a coach and
- 9:00not just this is just a scientist and this is the
- 9:03creative person. And we do a really good job
- 9:05working together. And ironically, a lot of our
- 9:07training models look the same, even though he's not good at it.
- 9:10So that means I must not be very good at it.
- 9:12I don't know. But but those are those are fun
- 9:15episodes to talk about as well. Now, we certainly might have
- 9:21some super fans that have watched from episode 1 all the
- 9:24way through today, but the majority of our people either
- 9:27came in in the middle or they come in intermittently.
- 9:29You know, they see a title, they like the next one, they don't.
- 9:31So they do that. But you guys have been through
- 9:34it all. You've been through every one of
- 9:35them. What have you learned hosting
- 9:37your own podcast on this on the subject matters?
- 9:41I think one of the things I've learned is when I'm listening to
- 9:44other podcasts or I'm listening to go to clinics and listen to
- 9:47people speak, like something will pop into my head that I
- 9:50want to talk to Eric about. And what we originally when we
- 9:53did this is like, hey, we're going to have this conversation.
- 9:55We bounced these ideas off each other anyway.
- 9:58Let's not just let's just sit down and do it in front of a
- 10:00podcast. And so I think one of the fun
- 10:03things about this has been I'll listen to something and we'll
- 10:08talk about it on the next episode.
- 10:09Like it's helping me think through the things that I listen
- 10:12to and and get another perspective on maybe the things
- 10:15I've heard. So it's been a lot of fun
- 10:17because the conversations we're having are literally
- 10:19conversations we started the first couple episodes, we
- 10:23outlined things and honestly, the flow was not as good as when
- 10:26we just went back and forth. And so we'll talk what it's
- 10:30roughly going to be about, but then we really just have that
- 10:33conversation on whatever the topic happens to be and it's
- 10:37gone really well. A lot of people like our banter.
- 10:39Yeah, I think, you know, a really helpful thing for me or
- 10:44something that I've noticed has changed over over the time that,
- 10:46you know, from when we first started was in order to really
- 10:51get kids to understand and buy into what they're doing, they
- 10:54have to understand the what's the why's the house when we
- 10:58talked about it. And and this podcast has been
- 10:59really helpful for me to try to formulate thoughts in my head
- 11:04that I don't, I have all these people who don't know me.
- 11:06They don't know that my lingo. They don't know the, you know,
- 11:09the way I talk. They don't know the way I
- 11:11interact. So I have to be able to
- 11:12articulate what I'm thinking to these people.
- 11:15And if I can do that with a group that doesn't know anything
- 11:17about me and they can walk away and be like, Oh yeah, you know,
- 11:20they do threshold for this reason or they do threshold at
- 11:22this point of the season for that reason.
- 11:24I feel confident my kids are going to get it too.
- 11:26And that's been really helpful for me.
- 11:28Yeah, I second that. I've become a better
- 11:30communicator with my team because of this.
- 11:34I love that. That's a that's a really cool
- 11:37bonus because you didn't set out to learn that you didn't think
- 11:40that would necessarily come through.
- 11:41So I really like that. All right, final two questions
- 11:43here. You kind of already given us the
- 11:44answer, but let's make sure we hear it again.
- 11:45Where can we find the podcast? Spotify and YouTube are the two
- 11:51most common places you can find us.
- 11:53You say most common, but are you on the other?
- 11:55Are you on Apple and and some of the others or kind of exclusive
- 11:58to Spotify and YouTube? Yeah, exclusive to those two.
- 12:02Yeah, at. This point, Yep, perfect.
- 12:03OK, great. And you know, again, you know,
- 12:06I'm a big fan of podcasts and obviously creating them and
- 12:09listening to them. So I'd like to always expand our
- 12:11podcast horizon. What is each of you?
- 12:14What is your favorite podcast to listen to that is not track
- 12:17related? Oh, geez.
- 12:22Honestly, I don't have a lot of extra time to listen to a bunch
- 12:26of others. I listen to bores.
- 12:28I listen to the Jess Athletics podcast when it comes out.
- 12:31You know, those are really the the two.
- 12:34I sit in the driver's Ed car and I'm afraid if I listen to a
- 12:37podcast, I'll zone out and not pay attention to what the kids
- 12:39doing. So I don't have a ton of extra
- 12:42time to listen to podcast. Mike, I've listened to so many
- 12:46of yours and learned so much with college coaches.
- 12:49I mean, your enthusiasm with them.
- 12:50I mean, I know this sounds really corny, but it's
- 12:53absolutely true. I mean, that's the one I listen
- 12:56to because I'm a big fan of learning.
- 12:58I mean, that's why we're doing what we're doing.
- 13:00Yep. Absolutely.
- 13:03I'm going to help myself right now.
- 13:06I love true crime. Yeah.
- 13:08So, so like serial killers, like conspiracy theories, like some
- 13:12of those I think are really fascinating.
- 13:13Some of them are wild. So I listen, I'm like, why are
- 13:15you listening to this era? But I like, I love true crime
- 13:18documentary. So there's a handful of true
- 13:20crime podcast that I that I listen to.
- 13:22Love it. That's what we're there.
- 13:23That's what we're doing this for.
- 13:24It is to get the get off the track.
- 13:25Some of us are too busy to even, you know, listen to podcasts at
- 13:29all, just want to create them. Others are listening to Serial,
- 13:31which is an extremely, extremely popular podcast.
- 13:34I love that. That's great.
- 13:35All right, so if you're listening, I've got a challenge
- 13:38for you. So if you're listening to this
- 13:39podcast right now on the Spotify app, hit pause because we're
- 13:42pretty much done and go search low stick podcast.
- 13:45You'll find it there and go find either look for look, maybe a
- 13:48good way to start, a good place to start is that it's hard.
- 13:50That sounds like a really cool episode.
- 13:52Maybe go start with that one or maybe go back to the original,
- 13:55but go check it out and then, you know, hit that subscribe
- 13:57button. And then if you're more on the
- 13:58video side, you can go to YouTube and just search low
- 14:00stick podcast. You'll find them there.
- 14:02And again, you know, maybe that the the it's hard 1 is a good
- 14:04one to to start with and and check come out there and again,
- 14:08hit that subscribe button so you'll know all the future
- 14:10episodes. So go do that right now and join
- 14:12us tomorrow. We'll probably do this all over
- 14:14again because this is what we do.
- 14:15I listen and create podcast, so we'll keep going.
- 14:17Thanks guys. Appreciate you.
- 14:19Thank you.
