- 0:03Speaker 1: point three KJRFM sports headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning, Happy Friday. Hopefully it's as beautiful as it
- 0:09Speaker 2: is here in the Pacific Northwest on Friday, July twenty fourth,

- 0:29Speaker 2: there Monday. It'll be the third practice at camp. Tomorrow's
- 0:32Speaker 2: is open to the public and so is Sundays.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Tory interesting to see the public turnout.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm thinking it's going to be the whole burm goal line,
- 0:44Speaker 2: the goal line like it was ten years ago, and
- 0:46Speaker 2: that's waned in the last few years. But you're right, Jessman,
- 0:48Speaker 2: this should be more people look for Tory Horton to
- 0:52Speaker 2: perhaps be the next player to add it to the
- 0:54Speaker 2: pup list as he reports to camp. He was not
- 0:56Speaker 2: on the field at all during the offseason practices coming
- 1:00Speaker 2: back from the mysteriously serious knee and shin injury in November.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So we'll see if Tory Horton's the next one on
- 1:07Speaker 2: the puplist physically able to perform to start training camp.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Remember the puplist guys can come back at any time
- 1:11Speaker 2: they pass a physical Maren's begin a big four game
- 1:13Speaker 2: series a night through Monday. It's a weird Friday through
- 1:16Speaker 2: Monday series at the First Place, Texas Rangers five h five.

- 1:28Speaker 2: a Fox regional telecast Logan Gilbert and Jacob de Gram
- 1:32Speaker 2: Sunday at eleven thirty on local TV. That is, if
- 1:34Speaker 2: you have cable or whatever the heck do you have
- 1:36Speaker 2: to have to get on the Mariner's TV network. George Kirby,
- 1:41Speaker 2: Kumar Rocker Monday in the series finale at eleven thirty
- 1:44Speaker 2: five am. Maren is half game back of the Rangers
- 1:46Speaker 2: beginning of the four game series. Some NFL training gaps
- 1:49Speaker 2: have already begun in Arizona the Cardinals, Gardner Minshew was
- 1:53Speaker 2: the starting quarterback over Jacoby Brissett. Brissette and the Cardinals
- 2:00Speaker 2: negotiatings on a new contract because Brissett, a ten year journeyman,
- 2:03Speaker 2: wants to get paid like a starter, because he thought
- 2:05Speaker 2: he was gonna start, and now Gardner Minshew's starting. By
- 2:09Speaker 2: the way, Brissette's making four point nine million in base
- 2:12Speaker 2: salary for twenty twenty six. Right now, now, I with
- 2:14Speaker 2: the Friday show Man. Is it a beautiful day? I
- 2:17Speaker 2: was driving with the top down on the most tank
- 2:19Speaker 2: coming downtown.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I love that, And I just was like, Wow, this.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Is why we live here on days like this.
- 2:25Speaker 2: It's about seventy degrees at ten am. After being a
- 2:29Speaker 2: Western New York in Michigan last week, the amazing thing
- 2:32Speaker 2: about the Pacific Northwest, for as many as much water
- 2:36Speaker 2: as we have and mountains, there are bugs here.
- 2:39Speaker 1: There are no mosquitos.
- 2:40Speaker 3: No, there's a few, but not like that was one
- 2:43Speaker 3: of the biggest things for me, having moved from the
- 2:45Speaker 3: East Coast and having grown up there and having lifeguarded
- 2:48Speaker 3: on the beaches.
- 2:49Speaker 4: There forest flies, not too.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Many mosquitos on the beach unless you're there early in
- 2:54Speaker 3: the morning.
- 2:55Speaker 4: But there's nothing. Mike and I went camping last weekend. Nothing.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's amazing. Yeah, it must be the sea breeze or
- 3:03Speaker 2: it's coming off the ocean or the sound or something.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I just think the environment isn't bug friendly. Yeah, it's
- 3:10Speaker 3: there's something.
- 3:11Speaker 2: When it's eighty degrees out and there's no bugs and
- 3:14Speaker 2: as you say, camping.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And barely any humidity.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, no humidity.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I think that's probably the bug thing.
- 3:20Speaker 2: When people get like twenty and thirty percent humidity here,
- 3:23Speaker 2: they go crazy. But yeah, that's the other thing about
- 3:26Speaker 2: the East Coast. Ninety percent humidity and ninety degrees. It's
- 3:29Speaker 2: not like that out in the Pacific Northwest. So when
- 3:32Speaker 2: it's so expensive, this is why, I mean it's idyllic. Yes,
- 3:35Speaker 2: it rains here, but I don't know.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I'm top preaching the car walking a lot of that rain.
- 3:40Speaker 4: That's another thing.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Sure, yes, you can be outside and go do stuff
- 3:44Speaker 3: in the rain that we have because the majority of
- 3:46Speaker 3: the time it's.
- 3:47Speaker 2: More of a miss the Pacific Northwest.
- 3:49Speaker 1: If you don't live here.
- 3:50Speaker 2: We mow our lawns in the rain out here. Yeah,
- 3:53Speaker 2: just another day that ends. And why from what October
- 3:55Speaker 2: to May, but May or June, well sometimes July fifth
- 3:59Speaker 2: through into October, I mean September October here is even
- 4:03Speaker 2: crazy or nice. But yeah, this is why we live here.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So hopefully you are enjoying and hopefully have you the
- 4:08Speaker 2: same weather. I know it's mighty hot other places, but
- 4:11Speaker 2: not here. You had to like this is a big more.
- 4:13Speaker 2: It was warm this week, but not hot.
- 4:15Speaker 3: It was it was warm, but that was like, whoa,
- 4:17Speaker 3: there's heat warnings that I'm like, okaywell my parents' house
- 4:22Speaker 3: it was one o six and with like a cloud
- 4:25Speaker 3: on the house, I chuckle.
- 4:27Speaker 2: On our station with the weather updates from Fox thirteen Seattle,
- 4:30Speaker 2: say a sweltering eighty two degrees, it's pretty good. Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Well, my favorite two is about out here is those
- 4:37Speaker 3: like ten PM sunsets that too.
- 4:39Speaker 4: You get so many more hours in the day that too.
- 4:41Speaker 3: And then sometimes when we have to wake up early,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I'm going to bed, like I'm a kid that got
- 4:46Speaker 3: put at bed, like in bed at seven thirty when
- 4:49Speaker 3: I was like in elementary school and hearing people play
- 4:52Speaker 3: outside and you're like.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Whoa, in New York you go to school till July first.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Just about that's the latest year crazy we start late September.
- 5:01Speaker 3: We started late September, and then we'd go basically to
- 5:04Speaker 3: the end of June. Yeah, and then you'd have to
- 5:06Speaker 3: add in the snow days too, because we'd have to
- 5:09Speaker 3: tack that on to the end of the year.
- 5:10Speaker 2: That's something else we don't have, yep too often here
- 5:12Speaker 2: in the Pacific Northwest. So hopefully enjoying your summer wherever
- 5:15Speaker 2: you might be. On the show today, I'm going to
- 5:18Speaker 2: talk about what I'm going to be watching for. People
- 5:20Speaker 2: always ask you what do you watch at the Seahawk
- 5:21Speaker 2: training camp. Especially with the team that returned returns forty
- 5:25Speaker 2: nine if its fifty three started, eighty six percent of
- 5:27Speaker 2: their snaps from the Super Bowl team last year are back.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Incredible continuity in the salary cap era in the NFL,
- 5:35Speaker 2: usually a Super Bowl team gets paid and the guys
- 5:38Speaker 2: just go.
- 5:38Speaker 1: They go to the richest money.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And really the only people have done that are the
- 5:41Speaker 2: ones who left boy Mafe, Kenneth Walker, Kobe Bryant to
- 5:46Speaker 2: a lesser extent, Riek Wolan. They left to get bigger
- 5:50Speaker 2: Richard deals than they would have gotten Seattle. But that's it,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and they've got some backfills. We'll see how the running
- 5:55Speaker 2: back situation comes out, but I'll talk about what I'm
- 5:58Speaker 2: looking at and the especially the early days of Camp
- 6:01Speaker 2: Seahawks new owners, the Coasal family are and talks to
- 6:04Speaker 2: add minority owners. We've talked about that this week. We
- 6:07Speaker 2: talked about that with the sports law expert in New
- 6:08Speaker 2: York City about the possibility of how many they may
- 6:11Speaker 2: and I remember Irwin Kishner saying to us this week, Well,
- 6:15Speaker 2: if they're going to bring in big, big fish as
- 6:17Speaker 2: minority investors, they may only have a couple, and if
- 6:20Speaker 2: they don't, they could have as many as fifteen or twenty. Well,
- 6:22Speaker 2: it sounds like big fish. We'll talk about the minority
- 6:25Speaker 2: owners that the Kosalas are add in recording the Bloomberg
- 6:27Speaker 2: News with an exclusive yesterday, and the author of the
- 6:31Speaker 2: Bloomberg News story was talking to Dave Softy mall Er
- 6:34Speaker 2: and Dick Finn yesterday afternoon. You'll hear from him detailing
- 6:37Speaker 2: wait a minute, private equity firm owning an NFL do
- 6:39Speaker 2: we want this? He talks about that too. You'll hear
- 6:42Speaker 2: from him on that how this Mariner's Ranger series this weekend,
- 6:47Speaker 2: it really isn't the be all end all. You can't
- 6:49Speaker 2: say it is. And it's only July twenty fourth, right,
- 6:51Speaker 2: but it's big, it's pivotal, and we'll explain what the
- 6:55Speaker 2: Rangers did a couple of weeks ago with this series
- 6:58Speaker 2: in mind. We'll talk more at length at eleven o'clock
- 7:00Speaker 2: about that because we're gonna go to Dallas Fort Worth
- 7:02Speaker 2: to talk to Sean McFarlane. He's the Rangers beat writer
- 7:05Speaker 2: for the Dallas Morning News. I'll love to give the
- 7:07Speaker 2: newspaper beat guys a chance to tell about their work
- 7:10Speaker 2: when I can.
- 7:12Speaker 3: People don't understand how much work they actually do, yes,
- 7:15Speaker 3: especially when it comes to baseball exactly.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I've done that job and it is a lot.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And nowadays people just lift their work and aggregate and
- 7:24Speaker 2: use it. And so that's why we try to have
- 7:26Speaker 2: I know, sometimes we have the athletic and others on,
- 7:28Speaker 2: but I try to have newspaper people on the show
- 7:31Speaker 2: because of the fact of just that they're the ones,
- 7:34Speaker 2: boots on the ground, guys who are doing the daily work,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and we're going to have one of them. The Dallas
- 7:39Speaker 2: Morning News actually has two, Evan Grant and Sean McFarland
- 7:42Speaker 2: two beat writers for the Rangers, and we'll talk to
- 7:44Speaker 2: one of them, Sean McFarland eleven o'clock eleven thirty talk
- 7:47Speaker 2: backs that Jessamin McIntyre loves.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Please you go, Please.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Go the iHeartRadio app. There's a little red button on
- 7:53Speaker 2: there in the nine three three kgur page press that
- 7:56Speaker 2: you have thirty seconds or less to leave a voicemail message.
- 7:59Speaker 2: We'll play it back at eleven. You can also go
- 8:00Speaker 2: to our website nine three to three kjar dot com
- 8:03Speaker 2: and do the same thing, or else the takomadadje text
- 8:06Speaker 2: line four nine four five one he could read back.
- 8:09Speaker 2: We'll read back those texts when you're a part of
- 8:11Speaker 2: the show at eleven thirty, like we do every day.
- 8:12Speaker 2: The first question for the text line which Seaork players
- 8:17Speaker 2: do you want to see, learn and know more about
- 8:19Speaker 2: in training camp. Bud Clark, as we talked about yesterday,
- 8:23Speaker 2: has a gigantic opportunity here because of Nicky mun Worry
- 8:27Speaker 2: being on the pup list following his arthroscopic ankle surgery
- 8:30Speaker 2: this month. These are a couple important weeks for Bud
- 8:33Speaker 2: Clark because he wasn't getting first team reps. He was
- 8:37Speaker 2: with the first team defense, but was not buying large
- 8:39Speaker 2: getting first team reps in spring practice as Ota mini camp.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm not saying Bud Clark is Nicky Manworrey. No one
- 8:47Speaker 2: is maybe No One in the NFL is with his
- 8:49Speaker 2: skill set and all the positions he can play. But
- 8:51Speaker 2: they drafted Bud Clark in the second round out of
- 8:53Speaker 2: Texas Christian with the idea of the multiplicity from safety
- 8:57Speaker 2: like something like Nicki and that, if you haven't figured out,
- 9:02Speaker 2: is McDonald's mo on defense. He wants guys that don't
- 9:05Speaker 2: play one position. Jared Ivy. I saw him at defensive
- 9:09Speaker 2: end most of OTA's in mini camps. He was an
- 9:11Speaker 2: outside linebacker last year, an undrafted rookie that they kept
- 9:14Speaker 2: on the roster all year because they thought so highly
- 9:16Speaker 2: of him. And now he's got his hand on the
- 9:18Speaker 2: ground and doing pass rush drills with the defensive ends.
- 9:22Speaker 2: And I asked McDonald about that during mini camp and
- 9:24Speaker 2: he said, no, we don't put what he's I think
- 9:27Speaker 2: the quote was don't pile someone else's land, that we
- 9:32Speaker 2: don't farm someone else's land, meaning coaches aren't parochial and
- 9:36Speaker 2: territorial to saying you can only have a linebacker coach
- 9:39Speaker 2: can only coach Jared Ivy. No, the defensive line coach
- 9:43Speaker 2: can coach him too. Nicki Monory gets coached in drills
- 9:46Speaker 2: with the outside edge rushers as well as with the safeties,
- 9:49Speaker 2: and we've seen him as a SAM four to three
- 9:51Speaker 2: linebacker when they go to nickel and dime, so that
- 9:55Speaker 2: Leonard Williams Lena Williams plays. Sometimes defensive tackles, sometimes defensive end,
- 9:59Speaker 2: sometimes as Byron Williams, sometimes a nose tackles, sometimes a
- 10:02Speaker 2: three technique, sometimes inside the guard, sometimes outside the guard
- 10:06Speaker 2: is a five technique. That is the MO for Mike McDonald.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'm really interested to see how Bud clark multiplicity shows
- 10:14Speaker 2: up without nick emun Worry on the field. Bud Clark
- 10:18Speaker 2: would be if someone asked me the question, what players
- 10:21Speaker 2: do you want to see, and you're curious to see
- 10:22Speaker 2: what you see from Bud Clark might be number one.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Now that Nicki man worry is down, but the Seahawks
- 10:28Speaker 2: plan is that is temporary. Of course, we talked about
- 10:30Speaker 2: that this week, that Nicki mon Worry. The team does
- 10:33Speaker 2: expect he will play in the opener September the ninth
- 10:37Speaker 2: against the New England Patriots at Lumenfield the NFL kickoff game.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And again that's because of the fact that Emon Worrey
- 10:43Speaker 2: had the surgery in July and not after he reported
- 10:47Speaker 2: the camp here in the last week, but before that,
- 10:49Speaker 2: and the arthroscopic nature of the surgery, a smaller incision,
- 10:53Speaker 2: a pencil sized camera that did the work rather than
- 10:56Speaker 2: a very more invasive and extensive surgery. So we'll see
- 11:00Speaker 2: four to six weeks is what I've seen some experts
- 11:02Speaker 2: say arthroscopic ankle surgery. Sometimes the recovery time for were
- 11:07Speaker 2: what nine weeks out from the well not not that much,
- 11:10Speaker 2: or what August the.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Well you're talking about three seasons four.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Weeks, yeah, or about six weeks from the opener. Yeah,
- 11:17Speaker 2: So that would be on the back end of that
- 11:19Speaker 2: recovery time. So we'll see.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Well, and you explained the pop situation as well, I
- 11:24Speaker 3: think pretty well. And so let's say he goes in
- 11:27Speaker 3: there and still hasn't played. They could take him off
- 11:30Speaker 3: the pup and still not play him, correct, and then
- 11:32Speaker 3: he'd be fine to return whenever, as long as it
- 11:35Speaker 3: happened before that deadline.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Correct. If he's on the pup list at the end
- 11:38Speaker 2: of training camp. He is eligible to be on it
- 11:40Speaker 2: to begin the regular season, which would mandate he misses
- 11:43Speaker 2: the first four games, but then can then return. It's
- 11:46Speaker 2: different than injured reserve because if you're on injured reserve
- 11:48Speaker 2: to start training camp, your season's over. Yeah, you don't
- 11:51Speaker 2: have the opportunity to come back. If you go on
- 11:52Speaker 2: injured reserve to begin the regular season. Recent NFL rules
- 11:56Speaker 2: in the last decade, you can come back be designated
- 11:58Speaker 2: to return after missing a minimum of four weeks. Those
- 12:02Speaker 2: are all the nuances of the list of the injuries.
- 12:04Speaker 2: But yeah, the Seahawks weren't going to put Nicky macwarrey
- 12:07Speaker 2: on the injured reserve list because the season would have
- 12:08Speaker 2: been over, and the pup list means he can come
- 12:11Speaker 2: back at any time during training camp. What else I'll
- 12:15Speaker 2: be watching in the first days writing it for the
- 12:17Speaker 2: News Tribune here Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, third Friday.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Rookie Bo Stevens remember him the fifth round pick from Iowa.
- 12:25Speaker 2: He's an All American left guard. The last time he
- 12:28Speaker 2: played right guard was as a sophomore for Kirk Prince
- 12:31Speaker 2: in Iowa City. Well, he was at right guard in
- 12:34Speaker 2: OTA's in mini camp. Of course, that's where Anthony Bradford starts.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And Anthony Bradford's into the last year of his contract.
- 12:40Speaker 2: But noticeably, Stevens was definitely on the third team because
- 12:43Speaker 2: the second team guard behind Bradford was Christian Haynes, the
- 12:48Speaker 2: guy who's had five chances to win the job and
- 12:50Speaker 2: haven't won it yet. Haynes was the number two through
- 12:54Speaker 2: the spring. I'm going to be interested to see if
- 12:55Speaker 2: bo Stevens makes any move at all up the depth
- 12:58Speaker 2: chart toward two, and he move it all towards suggesting
- 13:01Speaker 2: that he would even sniff the first team offense and
- 13:04Speaker 2: challenge Anthony Bradford, because remember when they drafted Stevens, we
- 13:08Speaker 2: all thought, oh, maybe there's some competition for Anthony Bradford
- 13:10Speaker 2: at right card. Bradford's in the final year of his deal,
- 13:13Speaker 2: so the Seahawks have a decision to make there, not
- 13:16Speaker 2: necessarily now, but they want to see how if he
- 13:18Speaker 2: can put back to back seasons together because the coaching staff,
- 13:20Speaker 2: despite what all of us and people on Twitter x
- 13:23Speaker 2: and posting videos say, they like Anthony Bradford. That's what
- 13:27Speaker 2: Anthony Bradford's coaches say. And now he's in the final
- 13:31Speaker 2: year of his deal, they drafted an All American guard
- 13:33Speaker 2: from Iowa, and the assumption is here's your heir. So
- 13:36Speaker 2: I'll be watching to see how much air is that
- 13:39Speaker 2: air into bo Stevens or if he's still on the
- 13:42Speaker 2: back burner as a third team as he was in
- 13:44Speaker 2: the spring. And then Tory Horton's return. I mentioned at
- 13:47Speaker 2: the top here it would not surprise me at all
- 13:50Speaker 2: that as Tory Horton reports to camp, presumably here in
- 13:53Speaker 2: the last twenty four hours before the deadline today, that
- 13:56Speaker 2: he goes also on the physically and able to perform list.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I had the shin injury at the first of November.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I remember the very fortuitous timing of the trade for
- 14:05Speaker 2: Rashid Shahed, who basically replaced Horton as the punt returner,
- 14:09Speaker 2: kick returner and wide receiver, deep threat speed guy. And
- 14:13Speaker 2: we all know how that worked out pretty well, to
- 14:15Speaker 2: the tune of a new fifty one million dollar contract
- 14:18Speaker 2: for Rashid Shaheed to stay in Seattle. But the idea is,
- 14:22Speaker 2: even when Horton's healthy, they want two of those type
- 14:25Speaker 2: of guys.
- 14:25Speaker 1: They want two speed guys to.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Open everything up on the defense for Jackson Smith and
- 14:30Speaker 2: Jig Billing, Cooper Cup and everybody else.
- 14:32Speaker 1: A J.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Barner, by the way, I was asked by Chuck Powle
- 14:35Speaker 2: this morning at seven o'clock, I think A J. Barner
- 14:38Speaker 2: could have an All Pro season in this offense.
- 14:39Speaker 4: I mean, he's shooting in with momentum for sure.
- 14:42Speaker 2: And he's right, and he's had two surgeries to correct
- 14:45Speaker 2: what it pained him. He played with a bad ankle
- 14:47Speaker 2: and a bad.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Shoulder, and he's got that swag.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Yeah, he's the.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Super Bowl.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But you know what's funny is the way he actually
- 14:57Speaker 3: talked about the outfit that he had a faux firt
- 15:01Speaker 3: fst on, a cowboy hat, aviator, sunglasses, and he's like,
- 15:06Speaker 3: I don't know, I just like I think he thrifted
- 15:08Speaker 3: most of his outfit.
- 15:09Speaker 4: I thought that was all.
- 15:10Speaker 2: It looked like a Macklamore video. He absolutely did not
- 15:14Speaker 2: look like a guy from Aurora, Ohio, which is an
- 15:17Speaker 2: hour from where I grew up. They it's not that
- 15:20Speaker 2: type of place, in more of a blue collar type
- 15:22Speaker 2: of town. And there he is former Indiana and Michigan guy.
- 15:26Speaker 2: He says he thinks he's an all pro right now.
- 15:29Speaker 2: He thinks he's one of the best tight ends, and
- 15:31Speaker 2: he's not shy about saying that that's.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Better swag than an outfit.
- 15:34Speaker 1: True.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Now they have an offensive coordinator and Brian Flurry, who
- 15:39Speaker 2: was a tight ends coach for the last half dozen
- 15:41Speaker 2: seasons in the Kyle Shanahan Shanahan Tree offense in San Francisco.
- 15:46Speaker 2: The tight ends are also already talking about how the
- 15:48Speaker 2: new OC Brian Flury, is tough on them. They think
- 15:52Speaker 2: unfairly tough against tight ends versus the rest of the
- 15:54Speaker 2: positions on offense. Well, of course he knows tight ends
- 15:56Speaker 2: better than any other spot. But I think the upshot
- 15:59Speaker 2: is going to be that Florey is going to get
- 16:01Speaker 2: the ball more to aj Barner. Part of the reason
- 16:04Speaker 2: that Barner hasn't had a seventy catch type season yet
- 16:07Speaker 2: one and he played hurt last year. But two, he's
- 16:10Speaker 2: really valuable as an inline blocker and he plays every
- 16:13Speaker 2: down and he's not just in there to catch passes. Arroyo,
- 16:17Speaker 2: the rookie tight end from Miami last year. The opposite
- 16:19Speaker 2: Arroyo is more of a Jimmy Graham type of split
- 16:21Speaker 2: out wide and let him run down the field. Arroyo
- 16:24Speaker 2: has some proven to do it's some injuries last year
- 16:26Speaker 2: and he's, like McDonald has mentioned, they want to see
- 16:28Speaker 2: a leap from him. We've often talked to the old
- 16:31Speaker 2: Pete Carroll truism. The largest leap between the first and
- 16:34Speaker 2: at an NFL player's career is between the first and
- 16:36Speaker 2: the second year, and that's what they're expecting out of Arroyo.
- 16:39Speaker 2: But the point on Barner is now he's got an
- 16:41Speaker 2: offensive corner who used to coach tight ends, and Seahawks
- 16:45Speaker 2: think they've got good tight ends for sure. Remember Nick Venette,
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yes they do.
- 16:51Speaker 1: The Seahawks gave him.
- 16:52Speaker 2: A tryout yesterday, no way, Yes, seven years after they
- 16:56Speaker 2: traded into the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wow, Nick Venette was back
- 17:00Speaker 2: in the Seahawks building, reportedly to get a tryout. And
- 17:04Speaker 2: that's interesting because they just cut Hunter bryan a veteran
- 17:06Speaker 2: tight end that they had signed in the off season
- 17:09Speaker 2: to get Brandon Johnson, the quarterback corner back from the Philadelphiagles,
- 17:13Speaker 2: who they had waved after a rookie season last year.
- 17:16Speaker 2: They waved Hunter Bryant, the reth veteran tight end, and
- 17:18Speaker 2: now they're trying out, reportedly trying out Nick Venette. Interesting
- 17:22Speaker 2: to see if they add him to the roster too.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Ninety man preseason roster were at the point where they
- 17:26Speaker 2: cut guys at the bottom of it to add guys.
- 17:28Speaker 2: That's what you do.
- 17:29Speaker 4: What is that date?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Now? It's the end of August?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Excuse me, it's only one, yeah, because it used to
- 17:35Speaker 3: be two.
- 17:36Speaker 2: There used to be an incremental cut the seventy five
- 17:38Speaker 2: five down to fifty three. Now it's just ninety to
- 17:41Speaker 2: fifty three. And it becomes a swap meet at the
- 17:43Speaker 2: end of the preseason of all those guys, thirty seven
- 17:45Speaker 2: guys on each team becoming available and on waivers and whatnot. So, yes,
- 17:49Speaker 2: the deadline, I think it's August thirtieth. On top of
- 17:52Speaker 2: my head. It's before the Labor Day weekend this year
- 17:54Speaker 2: rather than during it. I've spent I spent many Labor
- 17:57Speaker 2: Day weekends out like camping on the ocean shore or something,
- 18:00Speaker 2: bringing my laptop and having a fine Wi Fi service
- 18:03Speaker 2: to I.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Was gonna pass. Did you bring one of those little
- 18:06Speaker 4: Mai fis or something?
- 18:08Speaker 2: My kids are, what are we doing? Dad? It's pitch
- 18:10Speaker 2: to ten? No, I gotta put these Seahawks cuts online. Yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 2: The life of a beat writer in summer yeah, but
- 18:17Speaker 2: I got my job. It's just sometimes it's funny to
- 18:20Speaker 2: think all the sausages made.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:22Speaker 2: The other thing I'm looking at is Jared Ivy at
- 18:24Speaker 2: defensive end. I talked about it. He was there. It
- 18:27Speaker 2: was noticeable McDonald didn't want to cop to that. When
- 18:30Speaker 2: I asked him about it, he acted like, well, sure,
- 18:32Speaker 2: we're gonna play multiple ssitions. Maybe there's a competitive advantage there.
- 18:36Speaker 2: They obviously think the league likes Jared Ivy, or they
- 18:39Speaker 2: wouldn't have kept him on the roster. They would have
- 18:41Speaker 2: exposed him to waivers to get him on the practice squad.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Last year, he never played a snap, yet was on
- 18:44Speaker 2: the active roster all the time, all eighteen regular season weeks.
- 18:48Speaker 2: So there's some plan for Jared Ivy, and right now
- 18:50Speaker 2: the plan looks like he might play some defensive end
- 18:52Speaker 2: as well as outside linebacker. I'll be watching for that.
- 18:55Speaker 2: You can read my stories at the Neewstribune dot com
- 18:58Speaker 2: over the weekend to track what those developments are early
- 19:02Speaker 2: in training camp. Up next, off the field Seahawks news.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Bloomberg News reporting the Seahawks new owners are lining up,
- 19:08Speaker 2: potentially minority owners. They name them too. One of them
- 19:11Speaker 2: was into sports news a few years ago for the
- 19:13Speaker 2: wrong reasons. You might have remembered this. We'll talk about
- 19:16Speaker 2: that next At eleven o'clock, we're going to Dallas Fort
- 19:19Speaker 2: Worth doctor Sean McFarlane. He's a beat writer for the
- 19:22Speaker 2: Dallas Morning News of the Texas Rangers or the huge
- 19:24Speaker 2: series with the Mariners that begins this afternoon, that's coming
- 19:27Speaker 2: up on ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back. I'd
- 19:58Speaker 2: be Friday, ninety three point three kJ RFM, Greg Bell,
- 20:01Speaker 2: Jessman McIntyre with you as we are every weekday, ten
- 20:04Speaker 2: am to noon. Next week, starting Monday, will be at
- 20:08Speaker 2: the Virginia Mason Athletics Center. Every show in fact on
- 20:12Speaker 2: KJR Monday Tuesday at the Virginia Mason Ethics Center. So
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm not going to be here for a while in
- 20:18Speaker 2: the studios on Elliott Bay. Yeah, that'd be fun. That'd
- 20:23Speaker 2: be good. Just went back out there the fans. Jess
- 20:25Speaker 2: and I were talking about the fans. They have not
- 20:29Speaker 2: packed like they used to. And it's okay. It's summer.
- 20:33Speaker 2: It's sometimes weekday afternoon. Sometimes it's hot. There's no shade.
- 20:38Speaker 2: You have to park at rent and Landing and take
- 20:39Speaker 2: a bus in and pay ten dollars and pre register
- 20:42Speaker 2: all that to watch training camp. But we'll see how
- 20:48Speaker 2: many people. I would think goal line the goal line,
- 20:50Speaker 2: We're gonna have fans lining the It's just different. This
- 20:54Speaker 2: is the second time I've covered a Super Bowl champion
- 20:57Speaker 2: in their training camp. The attention, hype, the excitement, all
- 21:01Speaker 2: of it is just different.
- 21:02Speaker 3: It's been over a decade since they won their first one,
- 21:05Speaker 3: and so I could see this being reminiscent of that
- 21:09Speaker 3: twenty fourteen training camp year after they won that first
- 21:12Speaker 3: Super Bowl.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I could see that actually happening.
- 21:16Speaker 3: And what I love is I think that there's a
- 21:19Speaker 3: lot of respect. I saw it in the first Super
- 21:22Speaker 3: Bowl parade that you know you have. There's exaggerated numbers,
- 21:26Speaker 3: I'm sure that came out, but hundreds of thousands of
- 21:28Speaker 3: people were out on the streets and no arrests, no mayhem,
- 21:33Speaker 3: no greased up Philly poles, no nothing, and people just
- 21:37Speaker 3: really enjoying this team. And I think that, you know,
- 21:41Speaker 3: Pete Carroll was very I wouldn't say he was bombastic,
- 21:46Speaker 3: but allowed his players to.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Be and this team is just buttoned up.
- 21:50Speaker 3: He lets them loose at the parade, but you didn't
- 21:53Speaker 3: see any of that.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Different personality player for sure. I got compared to the
- 21:58Speaker 2: Legion of Boom.
- 21:58Speaker 4: And definitely different from that.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I do appreciate Ernest Jones's comments when it came to
- 22:04Speaker 3: the criticism of Sam Darnold throughout the season, but that's
- 22:07Speaker 3: about as spicy as it got.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that was in the post game in Inglewood when
- 22:13Speaker 2: we I love that. That was the day that Donald
- 22:15Speaker 2: through four interceptions.
- 22:17Speaker 3: And he had Yeah, that was not his greatest game,
- 22:20Speaker 3: but Ernest Jones put a stamp on this is our
- 22:24Speaker 3: guy and you shut up.
- 22:26Speaker 2: As Sam Donald walked off the podium there that day
- 22:29Speaker 2: postgame in Inglewood last November and Ernest Jones came on
- 22:34Speaker 2: to the podium, they passed each other to my left
- 22:37Speaker 2: and they hugged and it was like the precursor of
- 22:41Speaker 2: what Jones was about to say. Yeah, it was almost
- 22:44Speaker 2: like I got you by the way. Within the last hour,
- 22:48Speaker 2: the King Lebron James, the all time leading scorer in
- 22:50Speaker 2: the NBA forty one years old, announced that he is
- 22:54Speaker 2: going to the Philadelphia seventy six ers as a free
- 22:56Speaker 2: agent after Miami courted him after Cleveland wanted him to
- 22:59Speaker 2: come back to finish his career. The Acer native Nope,
- 23:03Speaker 2: He's going to Philadelphia, announced that on Twitter in about
- 23:06Speaker 2: a five posting missive He said he isn't playing for
- 23:10Speaker 2: anything but the love of the game and wanted to
- 23:13Speaker 2: win a championship and he thinks he can do that
- 23:14Speaker 2: with the Philadelphia seventy six ers. So Lebron James himself
- 23:18Speaker 2: reporting that Lebron James is going to sign with the
- 23:21Speaker 2: Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 23:22Speaker 3: And it's about you know, it's all over the Legacy outlets,
- 23:25Speaker 3: if you will, the Legacy media. So I think Dave
- 23:29Speaker 3: mcmanhaman of ESPN has confirmed it as well, and he
- 23:32Speaker 3: calls it his last decision.
- 23:34Speaker 2: He did say that, Yes, So Lebron James quote, I
- 23:37Speaker 2: believe I can help make the Philadelphie's seventy six ers
- 23:40Speaker 2: a championship team and I'm so excited to energize a
- 23:43Speaker 2: new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time. Yeah,
- 23:49Speaker 2: I was pre said when he played his last game
- 23:51Speaker 2: this past season, he thought he was done. He said,
- 23:53Speaker 2: I was pretty sure I played my last game. He
- 23:55Speaker 2: wrote this on Twitter this morning, Lebron James, I was
- 23:57Speaker 2: honest at that last press conference when I said it
- 23:59Speaker 2: needed to look at myself and decide if I still
- 24:01Speaker 2: love the game. I still truly love this game, and
- 24:04Speaker 2: I have more to give, and he's going to give it.
- 24:05Speaker 2: With the Philadelphia seventy six Ers, Joel Embiid and friends
- 24:10Speaker 2: in Philly.
- 24:11Speaker 4: What helps that Jalen Brown is there too.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That's right mistreated by the Celtics too, exactly. Yes, it
- 24:18Speaker 2: doesn't hurt.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it doesn't.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I know that Jalen had had some comments about Brawny
- 24:24Speaker 3: in the past, but I'm sure that'll go by the
- 24:26Speaker 3: wayside once they're playing on the same court together.
- 24:29Speaker 2: So Bron James says he's signing with the Philadelphia just
- 24:31Speaker 2: seventy six ers. Back here at home, Bloomberg News reported
- 24:34Speaker 2: yesterday the Seahawks new owners ven Venode Nirou and Neil
- 24:38Speaker 2: Kosler are in talks to add minority investors. Remember, we
- 24:41Speaker 2: talked to sports law expert on the franchise sales in
- 24:45Speaker 2: New York City, Irwin Kershner, about this this week, and
- 24:47Speaker 2: he said the Coezlers could add up to maybe fifteen
- 24:50Speaker 2: minority owners or maybe just a couple, depending on how
- 24:52Speaker 2: big of pockets these minority owners have. Well Bloomberg News
- 24:56Speaker 2: is naming some big pockets. Bloomberg reported the Causals are
- 24:59Speaker 2: talking the three private equity firms about investing in the
- 25:03Speaker 2: nine point six billion dollars sale of the Seahawks. They
- 25:07Speaker 2: include Six Street Partners from San Francisco. Of course, the
- 25:10Speaker 2: Coasals are Bay Area rooted Sixth Street Partner San Francisco,
- 25:15Speaker 2: plus a minority bid, a joint bid from Carlisle Group
- 25:19Speaker 2: and the Dynasty Equity Partners, two more private equity firms.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Cozos are also talking to Mark Stevens about Seahawks Cone
- 25:27Speaker 2: being a co owner. Bloomberg reported Stevens owns part of
- 25:31Speaker 2: the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Forbes says he's worth eleven
- 25:34Speaker 2: point two billion dollars. Where have we heard Mark Stevens'
- 25:37Speaker 2: name before in sports news? Can anyone remember twenty nineteen
- 25:40Speaker 2: NBA Finals Wow Toronto Raptors at the Golden State Warriors.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Mark Stevens, a co owner, was on the sidelines during
- 25:48Speaker 2: game three and he pushed He pushed a Raptors player,
- 25:56Speaker 2: Kyle Lowry during Game three on to the court.
- 25:59Speaker 1: He pushed him.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Not lie a co owner of a team pushing opposing players.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Team during the Championship Series. The NBA find him a
- 26:07Speaker 2: half million dollars for that and barred him from attending
- 26:09Speaker 2: games for a year. You co owned the Warriors, but
- 26:12Speaker 2: he couldn't even get his own building because of pushing another.
- 26:15Speaker 4: You can't actually do that.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Maybe if he co owns the Seahawks, he'll be up
- 26:19Speaker 2: in a box and he won't be anywhere near the sidelines.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I think they're a little more buttoned up than the
- 26:24Speaker 3: NBA when it comes to that kind of.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Thing, proximity of fans to players. Six Street Partners owned
- 26:30Speaker 2: stakes in the San Francisco Giants, yes, the New England Patriots,
- 26:33Speaker 2: the Seahawks opponent in Week one, and Super Bowl opponent
- 26:36Speaker 2: 's February sixth. Street Partners also owned stakes in the
- 26:39Speaker 2: Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Carl Isle and Dynasty Equity, who would Bloomberger's reporting, is
- 26:46Speaker 2: considering a joint minority bid. They don't own stakes in
- 26:49Speaker 2: an NFL team, but Carlyle does own a stake in
- 26:52Speaker 2: a Seattle sports team, the rain. A couple of years ago,
- 26:55Speaker 2: the private equity firm purchased a steak in the Seattle
- 26:58Speaker 2: reign of the National women's soccer dynasty owns a stake
- 27:02Speaker 2: in Liverpool of the English Premier League and NFL rules
- 27:06Speaker 2: you might we've talked about this during the sale process,
- 27:08Speaker 2: but a couple of years ago the NFL changed its
- 27:11Speaker 2: rules allowing private equity firms to own up to ten
- 27:14Speaker 2: percent of a single NFL team. The minimum stake a
- 27:18Speaker 2: private equity firm can have and a team is three percent.
- 27:22Speaker 2: And as rich More, our station manager, pointed out to
- 27:24Speaker 2: me on my way into the show today, three percent
- 27:27Speaker 2: of nine point six billion dollars is still two hundred
- 27:31Speaker 2: and twenty eight million dollars.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Is it two hundred and twenty eight or just twenty
- 27:34Speaker 4: eight eight twenty eight. I didn't do the math, that's
- 27:38Speaker 4: what do you say? Radio math isn't good radio?
- 27:40Speaker 2: He sat up on the top of my head.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:42Speaker 2: But to suffice to say that puts in perspective that
- 27:45Speaker 2: this is not an insignificant involvement of private equity firms.
- 27:49Speaker 2: And I hear you. I hear you right away. We
- 27:52Speaker 2: don't want private equity firms into the Seahawks. And there
- 27:55Speaker 2: is a negative connotation in society and in business right
- 27:59Speaker 2: now of private equity firm and what they do when
- 28:01Speaker 2: they take over companies. Journalism is one look at that
- 28:05Speaker 2: private ventures have come in and destroyed journalism, gutted it,
- 28:09Speaker 2: stripped it for parts.
- 28:10Speaker 4: We've watched it happen in front of our eyes.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I'm at a company that's doing the same thing in McClatchy.
- 28:16Speaker 2: But private equity firms are here to stay in sports ownership.
- 28:20Speaker 2: They are blank checks, their cash on the barrel to
- 28:25Speaker 2: owners and they could use the cozlists could use the
- 28:28Speaker 2: private equity money to perhaps expand Lumenfield, as we've talked about,
- 28:32Speaker 2: close the north end, the downtown side and make it
- 28:34Speaker 2: a complete bowl and add to a capacity of over
- 28:37Speaker 2: seventy thousand. They could, I'm theorizing here they could. Private
- 28:43Speaker 2: equity could provide the cash. Two, let's hear it, put
- 28:47Speaker 2: a grass field permanently in Lumenfield and having to replace
- 28:51Speaker 2: it during the season, and everyone says, well, that's impossible. No,
- 28:53Speaker 2: it's not. It's not impossible. They have grass fields in
- 28:56Speaker 2: Seattle on the Seahawks training facility, three of them, and
- 29:00Speaker 2: they practice on him in December and January and the
- 29:02Speaker 2: rain and the mud and McDonald has him out there.
- 29:05Speaker 2: He's out there every it's supposed to rain this weekend
- 29:07Speaker 2: a little bit during Saturday and Sunday, Hill McDonald have
- 29:10Speaker 2: him outside. One because fans are going to be there,
- 29:12Speaker 2: but two because he always has him outside when it's raining.
- 29:14Speaker 2: He had him outside in January during the playoffs when.
- 29:16Speaker 1: It was raining.
- 29:17Speaker 4: I remember that.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yeah, Pete Carroll if it was cloudy, went into the
- 29:20Speaker 2: indoor facility.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Yeah, he was big in the IPF yet like.
- 29:23Speaker 2: He didn't want to get his air monarchs dirty, but
- 29:26Speaker 2: not so with McDonald. But the point is the cash flow.
- 29:30Speaker 2: It's straight cash. If you're going to bring in private
- 29:32Speaker 2: equity firms, they're going to give him two hundred million
- 29:34Speaker 2: dollars in cash towards the sale. But importantly they don't
- 29:40Speaker 2: have controlling steak, meaning a say in what goes on. Yesterday,
- 29:45Speaker 2: the Bloomberg News reporter who broke the story about the
- 29:49Speaker 2: minority interest in whom the Seahawks new owners are talking to,
- 29:53Speaker 2: he talked to Dave's Softy Maller and Dick Fane about
- 29:55Speaker 2: this yesterday.
- 29:56Speaker 5: How new is this phenomenon that private equity is getting
- 29:59Speaker 5: involved in sports franchises and how prevalent is it in
- 30:02Speaker 5: the sports world it's.
- 30:04Speaker 6: About two years old now, and it's we've seen a
- 30:08Speaker 6: handful of deals. I think that I was waiting personally
- 30:12Speaker 6: to see what Carl Isle and Dynasty were going to do,
- 30:14Speaker 6: because we had already seen Sixth Street. Sixth Street bought
- 30:17Speaker 6: into the New England Patriots last summer. Arcdos has at
- 30:20Speaker 6: least three or four different stakes in the NFL. And
- 30:22Speaker 6: then there's Ares, who owns a piece of the Miami Dolphins.
- 30:25Speaker 6: They were broked that story a couple of years ago.
- 30:27Speaker 1: But now everybody's in the dance.
- 30:29Speaker 6: And so what owners are doing is they're having a
- 30:31Speaker 6: lot of conversations not only with limited partners, but with
- 30:34Speaker 6: private equity firms to properly value their teams and then
- 30:37Speaker 6: sell off to whoever they'd like.
- 30:39Speaker 7: So, okay, I'm going to ask this question, Randall, and
- 30:43Speaker 7: I'm doing it at risk of me coming across as
- 30:46Speaker 7: a complete ignoramus, all right, which I am.
- 30:49Speaker 2: So it shouldn't be a surprise to anybody.
- 30:52Speaker 7: So the Kasla family, before they agreed to purchase the Seahawks,
- 30:57Speaker 7: need to get rid of their shares and the scene
- 31:00Speaker 7: San Francisco forty nine ers. If the Kasla family needs
- 31:03Speaker 7: to dump their minority stake in the Niners. Why does
- 31:07Speaker 7: this private equity firm in Sixth Street? Why are they
- 31:09Speaker 7: allowed to own a portion of both the Patriots and
- 31:12Speaker 7: the Seahawks.
- 31:13Speaker 6: Sure so, the private equity firms have no controlling interest
- 31:17Speaker 6: in any of this, meaning they make no decisions. This
- 31:19Speaker 6: is often just getting money towards, whether it be liquidity
- 31:23Speaker 6: for an owner, whether that be a stadium project, secession planning,
- 31:27Speaker 6: things like that.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Whereas Kossela, he was.
- 31:30Speaker 6: An owner of the forty nine ers, I doubt that
- 31:32Speaker 6: he had any say so in anything regarding the organization.
- 31:36Speaker 6: But in order to become an NFL owner, what often
- 31:38Speaker 6: happens is that you want to be a limited partner
- 31:41Speaker 6: first so that you can understand the business. And I'm
- 31:44Speaker 6: sure that he knew that the Seahawks are going to
- 31:46Speaker 6: be put for sale someday, and that would have meant
- 31:48Speaker 6: sitting at the forty.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Nine ers cap table for a long time.
- 31:51Speaker 6: It happened, I think a lot quicker than a lot
- 31:53Speaker 6: of fans expected. But NFL owners had been wanting this
- 31:56Speaker 6: for years and so it was perfect timing for him,
- 31:58Speaker 6: just not so great for the forty nine.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Does a private equity firm of three percent, which is
- 32:03Speaker 5: not nothing. I mean, you said it doesn't have voting interest,
- 32:05Speaker 5: but does it have any influence at all. It's not
- 32:07Speaker 5: like we're talking about point zero zero zero three percent,
- 32:10Speaker 5: which is something like me and Softy would happen in
- 32:12Speaker 5: a company.
- 32:14Speaker 6: To my knowledge, no, I have not heard any conversations
- 32:18Speaker 6: between ownership and private equity where you know, an owner
- 32:21Speaker 6: is asking for private equity advice. These are essentially checks
- 32:25Speaker 6: going towards a project. And you've got to remember that
- 32:28Speaker 6: only families can sell to private equity. It is not
- 32:31Speaker 6: a situation where you know, let's say that a limited
- 32:34Speaker 6: partner who is a non family member of the Seahawks
- 32:38Speaker 6: could just sell. Only family members and original ownership people
- 32:44Speaker 6: can can sell to private equity.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And so that's a very limited amount of ownership.
- 32:50Speaker 6: And I think that private equity will see long term
- 32:52Speaker 6: if that changes, if they do have some control. But
- 32:55Speaker 6: right now, the NFL is very strict and I think
- 32:58Speaker 6: it'll stay that way.
- 33:00Speaker 2: That's Randall Williams of Bloomberg News yesterday talking to Dave,
- 33:03Speaker 2: Softy Mower and Dick Fane about history in Bloomberg News yesterday,
- 33:06Speaker 2: talking about the minority owners the Seahawks are talking the
- 33:09Speaker 2: Seahawks new owners, the Coastal Family, talking to about investing
- 33:13Speaker 2: in the nine point six billion dollar sale. Again, it
- 33:15Speaker 2: bears repeating three percent the minimum stake private equity must
- 33:20Speaker 2: take in an NFL team, up to a max of
- 33:21Speaker 2: ten percent. Three point three percent is two hundred and
- 33:25Speaker 2: eighty eight million dollars that would fund closing the stadium.
- 33:30Speaker 2: That would fund And now I know there's a public
- 33:32Speaker 2: partnership with the stadium and First and Goal and the
- 33:34Speaker 2: civic ownership that's the stadium district down in Soto for
- 33:37Speaker 2: those I got it. But if they wanted to put
- 33:41Speaker 2: grass in, two hundred eighty eight million would do it.
- 33:43Speaker 2: If they want to put in close the north end
- 33:46Speaker 2: and put next to the Hawk's nest permanent seating, two
- 33:50Speaker 2: hundred eighty eight million would go a long way. If
- 33:51Speaker 2: not doing it, they want to put in some luxury seat,
- 33:54Speaker 2: more luxury seating from more local revenue that the team
- 33:57Speaker 2: gets to keep for itself, two hundred and eighty eight
- 33:59Speaker 2: million would go a long way toward doing that as well.
- 34:01Speaker 2: That cast, that private equity brings a straight cast that
- 34:04Speaker 2: they can use for projects. As you just heard Randall
- 34:07Speaker 2: Williams say, So, that's interesting about who they're bringing on,
- 34:10Speaker 2: at least talking about bringing on private equity and the
- 34:12Speaker 2: fact that it can be a media cast to do
- 34:14Speaker 2: projects that have nothing to do with the capital they
- 34:16Speaker 2: spent on the team. So we'll see where there it
- 34:18Speaker 2: goes again. The NFL is voting on August to twenty
- 34:21Speaker 2: sixth in Atlanta to approve the Seahawks sale, which is
- 34:24Speaker 2: expected twenty four yes votes needed for approval four nine
- 34:28Speaker 2: four to five on it to come a to Dodge
- 34:29Speaker 2: Tech sign. How does private equity firms co investing into
- 34:32Speaker 2: the Seahawks fit with you? You cool with that? Like
- 34:36Speaker 2: to hear your opinion on that. Knowing that private equity
- 34:38Speaker 2: is here to stay, including in the NFL and the NBA. Next,
- 34:43Speaker 2: Amerna's Rangers series breaking down the pitching matchups and what
- 34:47Speaker 2: the Rangers did for this weekend way back two weeks
- 34:49Speaker 2: ago setting it up. This isn't a be all end all.
- 34:52Speaker 2: It's closed. I mean, it's critical, but it's not a
- 34:54Speaker 2: be all end all. It's only end of July, but
- 34:56Speaker 2: it is pivotal. We'll talk about that next and we'll
- 34:58Speaker 2: talk at eleven o'clock with the Sean McFarland is the
- 35:02Speaker 2: Rangers beat reader for the Dallas Morning News and he'll
- 35:04Speaker 2: give the Texas perspective on this big series. On ninety
- 35:06Speaker 2: three point three kJ RFM. Welcome back, have be Friday
- 35:35Speaker 2: to you, Happy summer Friday in the Pacific Northwest. A
- 35:39Speaker 2: couple of people asking for mosquito lists, camping hints and ideas.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I got a couple. We'll share that for you in
- 35:46Speaker 2: a talkback text.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Line at eleven thirty.
- 35:48Speaker 2: And they're a couple. Actually they're more than a couple.
- 35:51Speaker 2: They got to drive a little bit, but it's worth it.
- 35:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that was ours. It was worth it.
- 35:56Speaker 2: It was so worth it. We'll talk about that at
- 35:57Speaker 2: eleven thirty eleven o'clock, we're going to talk to the
- 36:01Speaker 2: Rangers beat writer for the Dallas Morning News, Sean McFarlane,
- 36:05Speaker 2: about this upcoming series. It's rather large. Starting today at
- 36:08Speaker 2: five oh five, the Mariners at the Rangers. The Mariners
- 36:10Speaker 2: beginning play one half game behind Texas. It's a four
- 36:14Speaker 2: game series, so this doesn't be all end all because
- 36:17Speaker 2: it's only July twenty fourth, of course, but think about
- 36:20Speaker 2: the swing in a four game series. To win a
- 36:22Speaker 2: four game series, you have to win three of the
- 36:24Speaker 2: four games, obviously, but if you win three of the
- 36:27Speaker 2: four games, that's a two game swing. So the Mariners
- 36:29Speaker 2: could go a game and a half up. If they
- 36:31Speaker 2: win this series, of course, then they got to go
- 36:34Speaker 2: to Dodger Stadium. But that's another batter we'll talk about
- 36:36Speaker 2: next week.
- 36:37Speaker 3: That's the gorilla that's coming up, is that, and so
- 36:41Speaker 3: win when you can exactly.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Then the Twins come to Seattle to start a series
- 36:45Speaker 2: a week from today. But if they lose this series,
- 36:49Speaker 2: the Mariners it's three out of four, say, then you're
- 36:52Speaker 2: lose in two games, and now you're two and a
- 36:54Speaker 2: half back heading to Dodger Stadium. So that's the pivotal
- 36:57Speaker 2: nature of this. It's not crucial and critical in a sense.
- 37:01Speaker 2: It's the season will be defined, but August might be
- 37:05Speaker 2: defined whether they're going to be chasing or being chased
- 37:08Speaker 2: by the Rangers. Now Houston is lurking out there three
- 37:11Speaker 2: games back. The division is so bad that you can
- 37:14Speaker 2: be five games six games under five hundred, yet still
- 37:17Speaker 2: be within three games of first place. And that's what
- 37:19Speaker 2: this is right now. Because the first place team, Texas
- 37:21Speaker 2: is fifty one and fifty one. The Mariners are one
- 37:24Speaker 2: game over five hundred, excuse me, one game under five hundred,
- 37:28Speaker 2: yet only a half game back. But because of the
- 37:30Speaker 2: four game series, winning it is the goal, because you
- 37:34Speaker 2: don't be chasing. If you're two and a half back
- 37:36Speaker 2: going into August, you're chasing, and you've got to make
- 37:38Speaker 2: up that ground. And we've seen this offense, and we've
- 37:41Speaker 2: seen this bullpen, and but they win the series, they'll
- 37:46Speaker 2: be a game and a half up. That's the swing.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Now.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Of course, a four game sweep either way and we've
- 37:52Speaker 2: that's a whole nother matter. But so I would say
- 37:55Speaker 2: it's pivotal. I think that would be a more accurate
- 37:57Speaker 2: word than critical. But it is a big series. It's
- 38:00Speaker 2: not just another weekend series against some team who they
- 38:03Speaker 2: got going well. Today. Bryce Miller's on the mound for
- 38:07Speaker 2: the Mariners against the Rangers, lone All Star Mackenzie Gore tomorrow.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Brian Wu, We've talked a long time, and a lot
- 38:13Speaker 2: of Seattle in the Pacific Northwest have talked a long
- 38:15Speaker 2: time about Brian Wu's troubles on the road, or Chris
- 38:18Speaker 2: Crawford talking about it yesterday with Ian Ferness. Yet again, yeah,
- 38:23Speaker 2: that has to change, and it's going to be tomorrow
- 38:25Speaker 2: against Nathan Valdi, who is not what he used to
- 38:28Speaker 2: be with either the Boston Red Sox or the Texas Rangers,
- 38:31Speaker 2: at least not so far this year. That tomorrow game
- 38:33Speaker 2: is not on Mariners television. It's on Fox thirteen Seattle
- 38:36Speaker 2: as part of a Fox National telecast, the regional split telecast.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I think they got Dodgers and Mats or some big
- 38:44Speaker 2: market teams. I can't remember the feature game tomorrow as
- 38:47Speaker 2: the main national game, but the secondary game is Rangers
- 38:50Speaker 2: and Mariners, so that makes that a four to fifteen
- 38:52Speaker 2: start tomorrow. Then it's a Sunday morning our time on
- 38:57Speaker 2: Mariners TV. Logan Gilbert against Jacob deGrom been injured this year.
- 39:00Speaker 2: He's not quite the Jacob de Gram of Metz Lord,
- 39:03Speaker 2: but he's still potentially good, and he's been good against
- 39:05Speaker 2: Seattle in the past. And Logan Gilbert has been good
- 39:10Speaker 2: by and large. I know he's had cold spells as well,
- 39:14Speaker 2: but this pitching staff by and large has been good,
- 39:16Speaker 2: of course, and starting pitching anyway. George Kirby on Monday
- 39:19Speaker 2: against Kamar Rocker at eleven thirty five. It's interesting that
- 39:24Speaker 2: reading reports the Rangers rearranged their rotation during the All
- 39:29Speaker 2: Star break to put it up just like this. They
- 39:32Speaker 2: wanted Gore, their all star, to start the first game
- 39:35Speaker 2: of this series against the Mariners, so they rejiggered their
- 39:38Speaker 2: rotation a week and a half ago.
- 39:40Speaker 4: When the two weeks ago when as a pivotal series, right,
- 39:44Speaker 4: and they.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Had two series before this, including at Atlanta. They've gone
- 39:48Speaker 2: two and four the Rangers have, so it's not like
- 39:51Speaker 2: this typical America League West, nobody's running away with it.
- 39:54Speaker 2: But just they looked two weeks ago at this Mariners
- 39:56Speaker 2: series and made sure they lined it up so that
- 39:59Speaker 2: Gore would start the first game of the series and
- 40:02Speaker 2: a vaud he would start the second, and de Grom
- 40:04Speaker 2: the third, and then Kamar Rocker will start on Monday.
- 40:07Speaker 2: We're going to talk at eleven o'clock to Sean mccrumbin
- 40:10Speaker 2: about that and how unusual or surprised he was that
- 40:13Speaker 2: they made that decision to do that. Of course you
- 40:16Speaker 2: do that if you're the Rangers because of the Mariners
- 40:18Speaker 2: starting pitching staff and you want to be able to
- 40:20Speaker 2: match that. And if it's not obvious now, the idea
- 40:25Speaker 2: when you play the Mariners that get to their bullpen,
- 40:27Speaker 2: get the starter, I drive up their pitch counts so
- 40:29Speaker 2: that the Mariners can adhere to their starting pitching rules
- 40:32Speaker 2: and get the guy out in the sixth or seventh
- 40:33Speaker 2: inning or sixth inning, so they get three innings to
- 40:36Speaker 2: play with the Mariners bullpen that has imploded in high
- 40:38Speaker 2: leverage situations this year, So that'll be the key to
- 40:41Speaker 2: the series. Can the Mariners starters get seven plus innings
- 40:45Speaker 2: so you don't have to see the likes of Michael
- 40:49Speaker 2: Rucker in a seventh or eighth inning of a high
- 40:52Speaker 2: leverage situation against the Rangers this weekend? That to me
- 40:55Speaker 2: is the key to the series. Can these starters get
- 40:57Speaker 2: seven plus innings to minimize how much the bull pen
- 41:00Speaker 2: has to carry the game through to the ninth inning?
- 41:02Speaker 2: And will they let them correct there's that? Maybe relax
- 41:07Speaker 2: the rules for a weekend. Huh, let them pitch one.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Hundred tak the series?
- 41:10Speaker 2: They would six guys in your starting rotation. How about
- 41:13Speaker 2: one hundred and five hundred and ten pitches instead of ninety?
- 41:16Speaker 1: Can we do that for a weekend?
- 41:17Speaker 2: Just just four games up? Next we'll go to Dallas
- 41:21Speaker 2: Forward talk to Sean McFarland for the Rangers side of
- 41:23Speaker 2: this big series. Your text and talkbacks at eleven thirty

- 42:20Speaker 2: Bryce Miller against the Rangers All Star Mackenzie Gore, Brian

- 42:28Speaker 2: Sunday morning, eleven thirty five Seattle Time Logan Gilbert against
- 42:31Speaker 2: Jacob de Gram. Monday, George Kirby against Kamar Rocker. Another
- 42:35Speaker 2: morning start eleven thirty five, Seattle Time. The Mariners are
- 42:37Speaker 2: one half game behind the Rangers for first place in
- 42:41Speaker 2: the American League West. Some NFL training camps I've already
- 42:44Speaker 2: begun in Arizona. Gardner Minshew, friend of Jessein mckelos, was
- 42:49Speaker 2: the starting quarterback over Jacoby Brissett at Cardinals camp. Brissett
- 42:53Speaker 2: and the Cardinals are negotiatings do on a new contract
- 42:55Speaker 2: because Brisset, the ten year veteran journeyman backup once its
- 42:58Speaker 2: starter money. He's getting four point nine million in base
- 43:00Speaker 2: salary now for this year at least currently. The big
- 43:06Speaker 2: story here in town about the sports scene is Mariners
- 43:09Speaker 2: Rangers a little bit larger than a normal regular season series,
- 43:13Speaker 2: so large that reportedly the Rangers rejiggered their rotation during
- 43:18Speaker 2: the All Star break to line up their all star
- 43:21Speaker 2: pitcher tonight against the Mariners in the first game of
- 43:24Speaker 2: the series. They wanted Mackenzie Gore to go first, and
- 43:27Speaker 2: so he is, and then Valdi tomorrow and the Graham
- 43:30Speaker 2: Sunday to talk about that in this series. One of
- 43:34Speaker 2: the Rangers beat writers for the Dallas Morning News we're
- 43:39Speaker 2: pleased to have on the air Sean MacFarland from the
- 43:41Speaker 2: Dallas Fort Worth Metterflex.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Hello, sir, a Hey, how are we doing well? Very well?
- 43:47Speaker 2: Thank you. Let me ask you. The Rangers have kind
- 43:50Speaker 2: of been sneaking under the Mariners for a couple months
- 43:52Speaker 2: of the first half of the season, and now they're
- 43:54Speaker 2: in first place. They've had their own injury issues. De
- 43:57Speaker 2: Gram hasn't been to de Gram they signed him to be.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Does it surprise you or does it speak to the
- 44:02Speaker 2: mediocrity of the entire division, the Rangers the where they
- 44:05Speaker 2: find themselves.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I think it's a bit of both. I think the
- 44:09Speaker 1: mediocrity of the division has allowed the Rangers to remain
- 44:14Speaker 1: in first place despite I think a lot of missed opportunities,
- 44:18Speaker 1: Despite the fact that they haven't had Corey Seeger for
- 44:22Speaker 1: more than half the season, Despite the fact that their rotation,
- 44:25Speaker 1: which was once, you know, only a year ago, the
- 44:27Speaker 1: best in baseball, is now pretty much just average. I
- 44:32Speaker 1: think that's you know, they the only reason they're in
- 44:37Speaker 1: this position right now is because the American League, in
- 44:41Speaker 1: the American League West is just I don't know, average, weird, mid.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I don't know what words is best to describe it,
- 44:46Speaker 1: but it's kept this team afloat I think when I
- 44:50Speaker 1: think in most years, it might be a different position.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Did it strike you? First of all? Let me ask
- 44:55Speaker 2: is it accurate the reports I've read that the Rangers
- 44:58Speaker 2: did change their rotation order during the All Star break
- 45:01Speaker 2: with this weekend series in mind.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Is that true? I don't know how true that is. Specifically,
- 45:08Speaker 1: I think the last two or three weeks their rotation
- 45:11Speaker 1: has been shorthanded. They're trying to get these veterans, like
- 45:15Speaker 1: to gram and evolved some scheduled days off to They're
- 45:20Speaker 1: probably creative with this rotation to make sure that their
- 45:22Speaker 1: veteran horses are healthy for the second half, and that
- 45:25Speaker 1: they're kind of getting by with a few bullpen games
- 45:27Speaker 1: here and there because they're effectively down to just four
- 45:30Speaker 1: full time starters. So I don't know if they have
- 45:32Speaker 1: the exact luxury to be planning in advance like this,
- 45:38Speaker 1: but I do know that they view this as a
- 45:40Speaker 1: really critical series, given where they stand in the West
- 45:43Speaker 1: and given what they need to do before the deadline.
- 45:45Speaker 1: So I think in that sense they want their four
- 45:50Speaker 1: horses to be going in this series. But I also
- 45:53Speaker 1: know that this rotation is a little bit patchworks right
- 45:57Speaker 1: now at the back end, So I don't know if
- 45:59Speaker 1: they have the luxury to be fully maniulating everything.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Well, it's suffice to say, though they didn't have one
- 46:03Speaker 2: of those bullpen days, be one of these four games
- 46:05Speaker 2: against the Mariners, I suppose. So let me ask you,
- 46:12Speaker 2: we don't know much about Mackenzie Gore out here in Seattle.
- 46:15Speaker 2: He was an All Star with the Washington Nationals last year.
- 46:18Speaker 2: What do they can What can Mariner fans expect when
- 46:20Speaker 2: they're watching for tonight when he's on. What's he doing?
- 46:24Speaker 2: What will you know if he's on tonight?
- 46:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think if he's locating that fastball up in
- 46:30Speaker 1: the zone and that curve ball's got the right break
- 46:33Speaker 1: on it, I mean, he can be unbelievable. He's had
- 46:36Speaker 1: innings games this season where he looks like a legitimate ace,
- 46:41Speaker 1: and then there'll be that inning that shows up in
- 46:44Speaker 1: the third or the fourth where all of a sudden,
- 46:45Speaker 1: the command's not there, he can't locate he's leaving fastballs
- 46:49Speaker 1: in the heart of the zone and next thing you know,
- 46:51Speaker 1: a team jumps on him for three four runs. He's
- 46:54Speaker 1: had a few of those this year where it's you
- 46:56Speaker 1: look at that p r you look at that body
- 46:58Speaker 1: of work, and it doesn't align with the talent you'll
- 47:03Speaker 1: see at times tonight. I really believe that, or in
- 47:06Speaker 1: a lot of his starts. But man, when he when
- 47:10Speaker 1: he's dialed in, like you see why they traded five
- 47:12Speaker 1: prospects for him. I mean, it's ninety seven ninety eight
- 47:15Speaker 1: on the left side, one of the grossest curve balls
- 47:18Speaker 1: you'll see, and when he's locating it, it's impossible to hit.
- 47:22Speaker 1: But he'll just have these innings or these you know,
- 47:26Speaker 1: just a few set of batters where he kind of
- 47:28Speaker 1: loses it and that can be the difference in the game.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Mackenzie goer left handed pitcher. I don't have to remind
- 47:33Speaker 2: Marin or fans so their troubles against left handed pitching.
- 47:36Speaker 2: He has one hundred and twenty two strikeouts and one
- 47:38Speaker 2: hundred and ten innings, So yeah, high strikeout guys at
- 47:41Speaker 2: seven strikeouts starts here. The last few times, we're talking
- 47:44Speaker 2: with Sean McFarland, he's the Rangers beat writer for the
- 47:47Speaker 2: Dallas Morning News on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline in advance
- 47:49Speaker 2: of the game one of the four game Big Four
- 47:51Speaker 2: Game series between the Mariners and Rangers down on Arlington.
- 47:55Speaker 2: You mentioned Corey Seeger. Is there a timeline on when
- 47:58Speaker 2: he may return and what is his ap since meant
- 48:00Speaker 2: to this whole.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Team the timeline, No, I mean god, we've tried to
- 48:05Speaker 1: ask for a more specific timeline, probably a couple dozen
- 48:10Speaker 1: times in the last week alone. Right now, He's gonna
- 48:13Speaker 1: take live batting practice this weekend, or that's the plan
- 48:15Speaker 1: at least, But it's all about how his lower back responds,
- 48:20Speaker 1: mostly to running and fielding. Hitting has been fine, the
- 48:23Speaker 1: rotating has been mostly fine, but it's kind of that
- 48:26Speaker 1: bending over that's kind of gotten them as he's trying
- 48:29Speaker 1: to work his way back from his injury. So I
- 48:32Speaker 1: think they would love to have him back by the deadline.
- 48:35Speaker 1: I don't know if that's realistic. It is based on
- 48:37Speaker 1: where he's at recovery wise and kind of what we've
- 48:41Speaker 1: seen so far, you know, But in terms of impact,
- 48:45Speaker 1: they've gotten really lucky that ize Heel Duran and Nikki
- 48:50Speaker 1: Lopez have kind of stepped up in the infield and
- 48:53Speaker 1: given them serious production. That's when we look at them
- 48:58Speaker 1: being in fir his place being five hundred. The only
- 49:01Speaker 1: reason they are is because they've had kind of some
- 49:04Speaker 1: bench guys come in and produce with Corey out. But
- 49:09Speaker 1: but Corey being in the lineup and being healthy, it's
- 49:11Speaker 1: a totally different dynamic. You know, we've seen the stretches
- 49:15Speaker 1: he can get on where he can kind of carry
- 49:17Speaker 1: an offense by himself, and I think the Rangers have
- 49:20Speaker 1: lacked that this season. When you're gonna have various guys
- 49:24Speaker 1: one through nine go through slumps, but you you historically
- 49:27Speaker 1: have Corey there who's going to be that aircraft carrier,
- 49:30Speaker 1: as as Skip Schumacher calls him, and they haven't had that.
- 49:34Speaker 1: I think you see that times this year where it's like, man,
- 49:37Speaker 1: they really need that guy who can kind of slug
- 49:40Speaker 1: slug them out of the slump or slug them into
- 49:42Speaker 1: a hot stretch, and they haven't had that.
- 49:45Speaker 2: What's the status of Josh Young, your third basement for
- 49:47Speaker 2: the Rangers, who's at two ninety four. I mean to
- 49:50Speaker 2: ninety four these days is the old three thirty or so.
- 49:52Speaker 2: He's top twelve coverage.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that they hope he'll be ready to go tonight. Obviously,
- 49:59Speaker 1: once we to the ballpark, he'll get evaluated and it
- 50:03Speaker 1: will know for sure. But it sounds like it's just
- 50:06Speaker 1: a light strain kind of right below his calf. They
- 50:12Speaker 1: didn't play him in Wednesday's finale against the White Sox.
- 50:15Speaker 1: But the hope, as we were told, is that he
- 50:19Speaker 1: comes in today, checks out good, and it's good to go.
- 50:22Speaker 1: But you know, especially soft tissue muscle injuries, that can
- 50:28Speaker 1: always change.
- 50:29Speaker 2: I'm sure the idea was give him Wednesday off. You
- 50:31Speaker 2: have the day off Thursday, so you have two full
- 50:32Speaker 2: days to recover for the series.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, get that little free two day break in
- 50:36Speaker 1: there and let it heal and rehab. But that's the
- 50:40Speaker 1: perfect world, and we'll see if that comes to fruition.
- 50:44Speaker 2: I used to be a baseball beat writer back in
- 50:46Speaker 2: the day twenty some years ago with the Oakland A's,
- 50:48Speaker 2: and the relationship with a manager, a dugout manager with
- 50:51Speaker 2: a beat writer is critical to how you do your job.
- 50:54Speaker 2: They hired Skip Schumacher to replace, of course, Bruce Bochi.
- 50:58Speaker 1: This is first season.
- 50:59Speaker 2: How is that guard? What's the dynamic guy? What's he
- 51:02Speaker 2: like on a day to day basis, what's the skip
- 51:04Speaker 2: Schumacher vibe?
- 51:05Speaker 1: Managing the Rangers? He was great, you know, even in
- 51:12Speaker 1: spring training we're getting to know him. He brought a
- 51:15Speaker 1: lot of energy. Even just in dealing with the media,
- 51:19Speaker 1: I felt like he was very honest and forthright, you know,
- 51:21Speaker 1: as forthright as you can be in that position. You know,
- 51:25Speaker 1: he's very respectful of our jobs and we have to
- 51:28Speaker 1: do and that's made it easy for us to to
- 51:30Speaker 1: kind of navigate what's been a weird season. And uh,
- 51:33Speaker 1: and I think the guys like him, and I think
- 51:34Speaker 1: he's kind of been kind of a good fit for
- 51:38Speaker 1: this team with kind of the moving pieces and having
- 51:41Speaker 1: to navigate a bench that you really need to step
- 51:43Speaker 1: up with the injuries and that's kind of his forte.
- 51:46Speaker 1: So he's been great to deal with from a from
- 51:48Speaker 1: a media standpoint, you know, after wins, losses, whatever it is,
- 51:54Speaker 1: you know, he's he's been accountable, which is sort of
- 51:58Speaker 1: all you can ask for, you know, from our standpoint.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Right exactly, And that makes all the difference for a
- 52:03Speaker 2: beat writer. Sean McFarland, Dallas Morning News Rangers beat writer,
- 52:06Speaker 2: joining us before Seattle in Texas beginning four game series
- 52:08Speaker 2: in Arlington. The Rangers have a similar front office situation
- 52:13Speaker 2: that the Mariners do. That Marriagers have Jerry Depoto as
- 52:15Speaker 2: their president, they have a general manager and justin Hollander.
- 52:18Speaker 2: The Rangers have Chris Young, who'd been their general manager
- 52:21Speaker 2: now the president and executive of Baseball Operation, and then
- 52:24Speaker 2: Ross fencer Maker is the general manager. By title, is
- 52:28Speaker 2: it Chris Young's show? And the other question I have
- 52:31Speaker 2: is is it are they as analytics driven as Seattle
- 52:34Speaker 2: and much of baseball.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Is Yeah, I would say it is. It is Chris
- 52:39Speaker 1: Young's show in the sense that he's the one that
- 52:44Speaker 1: answers to the media, the press, to the public in
- 52:46Speaker 1: terms of the decisions they're making. I think he has
- 52:50Speaker 1: the final call, you know, on a lot of these moves.
- 52:52Speaker 1: But I know they do like to be collaborative at
- 52:55Speaker 1: the top. They with him, Ross and you know a
- 52:58Speaker 1: host of other assistant gms and special advisors. Because every
- 53:01Speaker 1: front office has fifty special advisors to the GM now
- 53:07Speaker 1: and the Rangers have plenty of those two, So I
- 53:09Speaker 1: know they like to be collaborative with that kind of
- 53:12Speaker 1: core leadership group. I think they like to have a
- 53:15Speaker 1: balance of analytics and in the eye task what if
- 53:19Speaker 1: you want to call And I'm sure every every every
- 53:23Speaker 1: front office says that every team wants to believe that.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I think Skip is very analytical manager, and I think
- 53:29Speaker 1: I'm sure that's the Rangers hired him knowing that. But
- 53:34Speaker 1: he's very big on the analytics and the numbers and
- 53:36Speaker 1: the heat zones for pitchers and hitters, and that's, you know,
- 53:40Speaker 1: I think drives a lot of his decisions in game.
- 53:43Speaker 1: And I imagine that that also comes from the top
- 53:45Speaker 1: down too, in conversations he has with with the front
- 53:49Speaker 1: office and the decision makers. But uh, yeah, that's kind
- 53:52Speaker 1: of the Uh. I'm sure every team wants to say
- 53:54Speaker 1: that they're the perfect blend of old school and new school,
- 53:57Speaker 1: but uh, that's kind of where the Rangers hope to be,
- 54:01Speaker 1: at least.
- 54:02Speaker 2: John McFarlane Dallas Morning News, joining us from the Dallas
- 54:05Speaker 2: Metrofects before the Rangers and Mariners play the four game series,
- 54:08Speaker 2: with the Mariners one half game back at Texas in
- 54:10Speaker 2: the American League West. You wrote this week that the
- 54:13Speaker 2: Rangers have to play quote winning baseball at the trade
- 54:16Speaker 2: deadline August third years? Where are they fifty one fifty
- 54:20Speaker 2: in first place? But are they are they going to
- 54:22Speaker 2: try to add? Is some division so mediocre that they're
- 54:25Speaker 2: not willing to give up prospects to add to a
- 54:28Speaker 2: push or what do you think the Rangers are right now?
- 54:30Speaker 2: Trade deadline wise?
- 54:32Speaker 1: I really think this series will kind of define.
- 54:35Speaker 2: That, right.
- 54:37Speaker 1: I hope they want to. I think after a couple
- 54:40Speaker 1: of years of buying around the margins at the deadline
- 54:45Speaker 1: having it not payoff, I really think they want to
- 54:48Speaker 1: feel like they're buying for a winner this year and
- 54:53Speaker 1: not a middling team for lack of a better terms.
- 54:59Speaker 1: So I think this series will kind of define that.
- 55:02Speaker 1: How do you look how do you play against effectively
- 55:06Speaker 1: your biggest competition at the moment in the division? You know,
- 55:11Speaker 1: But if they're under five hundred, if they're not in
- 55:13Speaker 1: first place, I don't think they will be buying just
- 55:17Speaker 1: for the sake of sure the division is weak, the
- 55:22Speaker 1: al is a week. I think you can look at
- 55:24Speaker 1: that and maybe say, hey, maybe we have a chance
- 55:26Speaker 1: because of that. I think they want to be a
- 55:30Speaker 1: little more prudent than that and consider the future and
- 55:33Speaker 1: not go all in on a team that you know
- 55:36Speaker 1: might not be a winning team even though on paper
- 55:39Speaker 1: it is. I think that's kind of the situation they're
- 55:41Speaker 1: in right now, and I really do think this series
- 55:44Speaker 1: is going to tell them a lot about what this
- 55:46Speaker 1: team is made of and is this a team they
- 55:48Speaker 1: feel comfortable buying for.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Another Underscoring the pivotal nature of this weekend Seria Sean
- 55:55Speaker 2: McFarland from Dallas Dallas Morning News Rangers Beat right of
- 55:58Speaker 2: joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
- 56:00Speaker 3: Something McIntyre here, Sean, I had a question just because
- 56:03Speaker 3: you know, the bigger thing when it comes to the
- 56:05Speaker 3: Seattle media in which we live, is we wonder how
- 56:08Speaker 3: you guys are viewing the Mariners. Do you look at
- 56:12Speaker 3: this the same way we try to break down your team?
- 56:15Speaker 3: And you know you're out there, you're in the media,
- 56:17Speaker 3: so inside the clubhouse and out what are the comments
- 56:21Speaker 3: when it comes to Rangers fans when it looks to
- 56:24Speaker 3: the Mariners.
- 56:26Speaker 1: I think it's probably very similar to how I would
- 56:30Speaker 1: imagine Rangers fans or to the Mariners fans hill by
- 56:33Speaker 1: Rangers right now, which is like I think a lot
- 56:36Speaker 1: of people are looking at the Mariners and to some extent,
- 56:38Speaker 1: the Astros this division, saying like, is anyone gonna take
- 56:42Speaker 1: this division? Like is someone going to I know the
- 56:44Speaker 1: ring Rangers fans have been frustrated that this is not
- 56:48Speaker 1: a this does not look like a winning baseball team,
- 56:50Speaker 1: but they keep looking up and they keep remanding at
- 56:52Speaker 1: first place or a game out or a half game up,
- 56:54Speaker 1: or they're right there with the Mariners. And I think
- 56:57Speaker 1: fans say like, well, okay, if anyone did they want
- 56:59Speaker 1: to win this division? Does anyone want to go to
- 57:01Speaker 1: the playoffs? So I think that's how Rangers fans feel
- 57:04Speaker 1: about their team, and I think that kind of gets
- 57:07Speaker 1: projected onto the Mariners as well, because it's like, I
- 57:11Speaker 1: don't know, you keep thinking at some point that if
- 57:14Speaker 1: you play average enough baseball, someone's going to pass you,
- 57:19Speaker 1: but that just hasn't happened yet.
- 57:20Speaker 4: You mean me, you like, who who is going to
- 57:23Speaker 4: do that?
- 57:25Speaker 1: Exactly? I really think that's the exact boat that uh,
- 57:29Speaker 1: you know, Rangers fans are in right now. Is just
- 57:31Speaker 1: kind of looking around saying like I don't think we're
- 57:33Speaker 1: very good, but it doesn't seem like anyone wants to
- 57:36Speaker 1: to do anything with that what a.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Crowd's gonna be this weekend, Sean, is it a big
- 57:40Speaker 2: series in at the Gate? We're gonna have packed houses
- 57:42Speaker 2: in Arlington.
- 57:44Speaker 1: I think it'd be pretty good. We just had the
- 57:48Speaker 1: the White Sox in town for a midweek series and
- 57:51Speaker 1: that drew pretty well. And I know White Sox are
- 57:54Speaker 1: in first place, and you know a lot of Chicago
- 57:56Speaker 1: transplants in the area, but uh, you know, fans come
- 57:59Speaker 1: out out when Jacob deGrom pitches and Nathan Valdi pitches.
- 58:04Speaker 1: You know, they know those are special moments, especially in
- 58:07Speaker 1: a kind of a tight race right here the head
- 58:10Speaker 1: of the deadline. So I think between the opponent, the
- 58:14Speaker 1: matchups fifty being a weekend series, I think it'll be
- 58:18Speaker 1: a pretty good crowd out there.
- 58:19Speaker 2: Plus the Cowboys are still in Oxnard, California for the
- 58:22Speaker 2: next few weeks.
- 58:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we get a few more days. We have to
- 58:25Speaker 1: worry about Dak Prescott and Jerry Jones, so will enjoy
- 58:30Speaker 1: while they can.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Spoken like a true DFW guys, Shawn, I knew you
- 58:33Speaker 2: got to get to the yard. I appreciate you joining us.
- 58:35Speaker 2: Enjoy the weekend and the games this weekend.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Thanks for coming on. Appreciate you guys, Thank you.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Sean McFarlane, Dallas Morning News. The Rangers beat writer ahead
- 58:44Speaker 2: of the Mariners Rangers series for first place in the
- 58:46Speaker 2: American League West this weekend. Interesting that he says that
- 58:50Speaker 2: they see themselves as potential standing pat or even sellers
- 58:54Speaker 2: if they don't win the series. Because if they don't
- 58:57Speaker 2: win the series, are you're not gonna be in first place.
- 58:58Speaker 2: It's a half game lead. If they split a course
- 59:01Speaker 2: too too, it'll still be in a half game in front.
- 59:03Speaker 2: But he says, trade deadline wise this weekend will decide that.
- 59:06Speaker 4: That's coming up right around the corner.
- 59:08Speaker 2: I don't think Mariner fans want the Mariners to think that, no,
- 59:11Speaker 2: because if they lose this series, they want bye bye
- 59:14Speaker 2: bye bye bye instead. I don't think they'd want to
- 59:17Speaker 2: sell off the farm if they fall two and a
- 59:19Speaker 2: half games back this weekend, if they lose the series.
- 59:21Speaker 2: So it was interesting to hear him say that it
- 59:23Speaker 2: was almost like this faux contention that the Rangers consider themselves.
- 59:27Speaker 3: Well yeah, and that was the exact words that he
- 59:31Speaker 3: used were, I think they'll be more prudent than that, right,
- 59:34Speaker 3: Like the front office does not believe this is a
- 59:37Speaker 3: series winner, and I'm talking you know, championship, you know,
- 59:41Speaker 3: like even like even division, right, but obviously the World
- 59:45Speaker 3: Series is the goal.
- 59:46Speaker 4: But he said not, it's not their year. But so
- 59:50Speaker 4: what do we do.
- 59:50Speaker 3: It's it's it's very like purgatory of a division.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Yes, good way to put it. But that's interesting because
- 59:56Speaker 2: we think the opposite here in Seattle. This is their
- 59:58Speaker 2: World Series window, go for it. Yeah, so in that sense,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: I don't see this series as season defining on whether
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: the Mariners will try to add at the deadline. I mean,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: if they lose the series, they still need a right
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: handed bat and a reliever, and if they win the series,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: they still need a right hand in bat a reliever.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: But no. Sean McFarland says the opposite in Texas, that
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: this series will define whether the Rangers are buyers and
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: at what level. He said recently, in recent summers, they've
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: been fringe buyers, not making big, big impact moves. But
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: to your point, justman, he doesn't think that there's going
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: to be a big selling or big trade of some
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: of their top prospects to go for it this year
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: because he didn't think the teams go for teams.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly that's some good bulletin board material right there.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: For the Mariners, it's this series or bust when it
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: comes to the Rangers.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: So in that sense, this series means more to the
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Mariners than it does to the Rangers.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: What is it? Mortal comment, finishing.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Exactly to it. And then you got the trash can
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: still hanging out there. Like I said, only three games back, right,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: the mediocrity again if they win five or six in
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: a row.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: Well, sometimes the division is so good and sometimes it's
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: so bad. I mean we've seen it in football, We've
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: seen it in multiple leagues and yeah, but yeah, it
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: is there for the taking, and it sounds like the
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: Rangers aren't going for it, so go kick them.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's an interesting perspective from Dallas. If you miss
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: that and go the iHeart Radio app and listen to
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Sean McFarlane talking to us about the importance of this
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: series and the Rangers trading deadline status being determined by

- 1:02:04Speaker 8: Why in the world did the Mariners fire the Dwight
- 1:02:07Speaker 8: Shreut of the coaching stet, the assistant to the assistant coach.
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: They think this is a big move that's going to
- 1:02:14Speaker 8: turn eight around.
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: You know, I realized something about our beloved Seattle Mariners.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: This hole.
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: If they could just get to the World Series, boy,
- 1:02:23Speaker 9: oh boy, are they built to win. That's like the
- 1:02:25Speaker 9: guy in the bar that says, you know, you're lucky,
- 1:02:26Speaker 9: I'm tired, or you're lucky. I don't want to fight
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: because otherwise, man, I could really beat you up.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: It's just an empty threat. And I'm sorry.
- 1:02:34Speaker 9: No, I don't think they are built to beat the
- 1:02:36Speaker 9: Dodgers in the World Series. I do not believe that
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: because they can't score runs.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: That thing. Does that second guy work here in the studio,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: because that quality of audio was like he had a
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: radio set up.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: Some people I would have very good handsets go with
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: their I think, you know, we look outside at our
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: sales team and they're always on headsets and everything.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: I think their audio is pretty good too, but you
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: never know.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: And if you did want to mention the Big Bucks contest.

- 1:04:05Speaker 4: You for listening.

- 1:04:16Speaker 4: That sounds fantastic.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's cool.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: You should go say hi.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: I should.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: I hope they make themselves.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: That hold up a sign g R egg.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: That would do it, That would do it? Two five
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: three says which trash Anthy referring through the astros of
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the Mariners. Well that's that's I wrote back AlCH that hurts.
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, bo wait that actually was a solid burn
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: from the two five to three.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: That's a solid burn.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Yes it is, Yes it is. Yeah, Marcus, our friend
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: from the two o six is mark my words, and
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: Mariners will sweep the Rangers in four games. Imagine if
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: that happened, maybe three and a half games up by
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Monday night, they could do it. I guess we can dream.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: It's actually a thing that could happen.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: That is a thing that could happen.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: I think we're tempering expectations with like a splits and
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: hope for a three to one series.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Nine to seven one says, you have a bunch of
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: teams that refuse to improve their team in the offseason,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: and this is what you get.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Meaning the American League West.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Nine set one says, this division hasn't been this bad
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: since ninety four? Is it? Maybe it's never been this bad.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: It's historically, he says, And here she says, it's pretty bad.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: And the America League Central hasn't been much better. But
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: now the White Sox are starting to move White Sox
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: and Guardians are starting to separate themselves there. But they've
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: been around five hundred at the top of that division
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: as well. The entire American League has barely had a
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: few teams about five hundred most of the season, the
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Yankees and the Rays in the American League East, and
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: that's about it. But yeah, mediocrity prevails, at least in
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: late July two five three says, this is the entire
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: problem with Jerry Depoto's regime. All the work they do
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: is on a piece of paper or spreadsheet. That's why
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: we get these cookie in game picture decisions. Kookie is
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: one way to describe it.
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: It is interesting to say the least it is interesting.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: We raised the ire of some on the text line
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: when we said that there are no mosquitos in the
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: Yeah, people were curious where we go to find the mosquitos?
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Two five three said, good skeeterless camping trip ideas.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: H Yes, I went to Lake Cushman last weekend and
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: it was beautiful in Scocomish. And also you have to
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: be aware that you were outside of cell range when
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: you're there, which you can disconnect.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: If you do go into the cascades of the foot Is.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Yet you're going to run into some mosquitos. I see
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: one I think of the three six osa and he
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: went not just in the Yakima area and got just
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: twenty mosquito bites in thirty six hours. Yes, that's possible.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: We go to the Olympic Coast rialto Beach Beach, camping
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: right on the water among the driftwood. It's about a
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: mile and a half hike from the trailhead and the
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: parking area. There's a hole in the wall, a rock
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: that's shaped like an art It's called hole in the Wall.
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Rialto Beach. It's so remote out there that you're not
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: beyond forks and it's so idyllic out there, the sunsets,
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: watching the fog come in at night. Here I am
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: telling live radio and the twelve Flourges marking the country
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: about our favorite Kidden camping spot. It's not really hitting.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: It's well known. There are no mosquitoes because of the
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: ocean breeze. And yeah, you take dogs there. I mean,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: I don't know if you're supposed to take dogs there.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: It's an Olympic National Park, but we take our dog
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: there and did take our dog there when she was alive,
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: and man, it's it's idyllic. Chishi Beach out on the
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Upper Northwest Tip.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: Claylock was one of my favorites that I ever visited.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: I got really lucky at the last minute someone canceled
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: and I was just on the website.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: At the gut that book's out, yes, as soon as
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: they open it.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: And I brought my dog Benson at the time when
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: he was alive, and we just the stars were unbelievable.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: And clay Lock, anyone who's been there knows how beautiful
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: it is.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: There's also a lodge at Claylock Odge.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: My wife and I have been trying to get in
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: with little cabins and things, and it's all these books
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: solid rialto Beach at the time, I'm hoping I'm not
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: the vulging secrets here. But you didn't need to reserve.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: You just PLoP down.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: Along the beach in the same first Yeah.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the word disperse camping, and it's you know,
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: a mile and a half. It's not bad. There are
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: also three beaches there. You can hike in a triangle
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: down along the sand. If you go further up the
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: coast from rialto Beach, another option that's a little bit
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: longer of hiking. But yeah, man, the Olympic Coast, it's
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: amazing for how desolately because it's far away. I get it.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a drive hike to get out there, for sure,
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: but I feel.
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: Like Wendy might be a pretty decent hiker.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: She's unbelievable.
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: And then when you get so those sites, though, you
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: feel like you earned it. I love to hike and
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: hike out, but I just haven't had the opportunity since
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: I screwed up my knees.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Yeah, my wife is a backcountry camper and hiker Extraordinariy's
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: she took a bunch of school kids at the top
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: of mountain near I mean like an outward bound type trip.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Kids who never even hiked before. I mean, she's she's unbelievable.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: She went She lived in Glacier Park. Her backyard was
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Glacier National Park. I used to go visit her and
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: there'd be grizzly bears in her backyard.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Yeah, she if.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: She went to school at cu Boulders. She hiked all
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: the fourteen ers in Colorado. She absolutely smokes me when
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: we go hiking. I'm just through. We hiked once in
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: the North Cascades and we must have hiked front. We
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: slept in the back of her truck. We'll pick up
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: trains before we had kids, and we went hiking in
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: the North Cascades. It was up by Martha Lake. I
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: think it wasn't if I'm not mistaken. We hiked from
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: like six am sunrise until about ten pm sunset and
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: never did reach our destination. We must have hiked for
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: twenty some miles and I finally saw I'm done. My
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: fund meter is pegged. I'm sitting around right here, and
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: I parked myself right next to the trail. We did
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: the enchantments, which you can't do without a reservation unless
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: you do it all on one day.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that was twenty whatever. It was sixteen hours a hike,
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: and that was wild.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: One of our young studs on our sales staff actually
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: got the lottery thing. Yeah, he did the whole hike.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: He got to do the whole thing. Yeah. But anyway,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: let's see, we have a couple other things to get
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: back to.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: When it comes to sports.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: We love talking about the Pacific Northwest, but let's see,
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: this division has not been that bad since nineteen ninety four.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: This is historical. I mean to date, it is historical,
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: but we still got a lot of season left.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Michael the two five three says, sweet, the Rangers then
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: get swept by the Dodgers. It's entirely possible.
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think we're looking with high hopes
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: when it comes to the Dodgers.
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: I would like to see them steal one.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: The thing about that scenario, though, would be that you're
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: going to gain two games in the standings for each
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: win of this Ranger series, right, instead of losing a game,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: begin a game and the Dodgers series. If you lose
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: that Dodger series, the way the American League West goes.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: You may not lose any ground if you get swept
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: by the Dodgers, because the Rangers may lose three straight
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: in their next series, or the trash Cans or the
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Angels or the Eights. That's the beauty of this series
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: this weekend is you have a direct impact on the
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: standings in every game, and if you lose three to
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: the Dodgers, that won't be as nearly as debilitating as
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: if you lose four to the Rangers, because there's a
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: good chance the rest of the American League West is
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: going to lose while you're losing at Dodger Stadium. Anyway,
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: That's how I see it. One subject that has been
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: a constant talkback item on this text line is the
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: grass at lumen Field.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: Yeah, people are passionate, more passionate than I thought they
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: would be about this subject.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: There are a lot of people who must be hydrologists
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: or grass experts who say you can't do it because
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: of the shallow nature of the water table right down
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: on the water at Lumenfield.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: I mean, that's why the seismic event happened during Marshall
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: Lynch's touchdown.
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: As many people.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: Came out and reported who are seismatologists and naturalists who
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: know about the area on which it was built. But
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: I don't know if that prevents them from grass. I
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: don't know enough about the subject.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: I've been told that's part of the reason that Paul
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: Allen after he remember he talked those of you that
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: were in town back then in ninety seven ninety eight,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: when they open Lumenfield and we're talking about building it,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I should say he promised grass, or even quite promise it,
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: but he said, aren't ten is to have a grass
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: field so we can have international soccer and the Seahawks
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: play on grass field at Lumenfield. And it didn't come
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: to be. And I've been told some of the reason
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: is because how low the water table is below the
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: surface of the stadium, because it's I mean, it's right
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: down next to Elliott Bay. But I've also been told
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: it's not impossible and that you can do it, and
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: whether you tray it in off trays like they do
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: in Arizona, Las Vegas, you can do grass. You can't
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: and it takes money. It takes perhaps redoing it in
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: the middle of the season, but it can be done.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: It would take an owner willing to spend money out
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: of his or her own pocket to do it, and
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: as Ian pointed out yesterday, then you're running the risk
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: of not having as many non football events there like
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: concerts and track your price, because you'd have to replace
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: the grass. Again, I would stand to say that you
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: have enough revenue coming into that stadium for a Taylor
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Swift type concert, it's worth putting the grass back in.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: But the local ownership, the local municipality that owns the
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: stadium is not the same as the Seahawks owners that
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: would have to replace the grass.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: And there's also with anything like that, depending on how
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: they do it, an environmental impact study that will of
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: course happened, and so that could take years to actually
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: come to fruition.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: With what I've seen in multiple projects in the city.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: James from the three to six oh says, how long
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: until Brownie James Lebron's son tries to sign in Philly.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: That may already be tucking. They may already be trying
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: to make that happen.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: That could be part of the deal.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: Hey, I'll take eight million over two if I feel
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: bad for that kid, though I honestly do.
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: He didn't do anything wrong.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think that kind of pressure should have
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: been on him, And I mean, how obvious was it
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: for that kid that he got drafted. He was a
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: G League guy like that's where and awesome to build
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: your skill within that, go for it.
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: But he did not.
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: He was not a draft pick guy. He was not
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: a draft pick guy at the time at which he
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: got drafted.
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: And then I.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: Think Lebron wanted all the good things for his son,
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: but he definitely put him back in his shadow.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: My opinion, only.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: Two six says grass is a Nogo and Captain Nogo
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: for a reason that a Midwest transplant who never studied
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: Washington State history would not understand. You have to understand
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Washington State history to understand a water table. I don't
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: know the geological reality of where the stadium sits was built.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Is the eight hundred pound gorilla. Besides all the other
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: post points Ian raised to you yesterday, well thanks to six,
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: I'm aware of that. I'm also aware that money will
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: buy you anything. And if you wanted to buy a
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: grass field and bring it in on a tray like
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: they're doing laws they don't have.
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: Freaking desert, I know, but we don't have the room
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: to That's true that out here, like you're talking about
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: wheeling it in from what essentially is the parking.
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: Lot on the north end, that's true.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: You would you'd have to build a garage and food
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: underneath the ground, like to do in Arizona.
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: An entire new structure in an already compacted area.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: That's correct.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: And the geography of the stadium is much different than
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: it is in Las Vegas, a side of a freeway
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: in Arizona and Glendale and the desert. Right, it's possible,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: it's not very feasible in what they have, but.
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: I just don't see it happening.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: It's probably not going to happen. But I will tell
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: you that there are a lot of players in the
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Seahawks locker room that wished it would And no matter
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: what the statistics of the NFL pushes out, there are
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: players who are really, really, really adamant that grass would
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: really help their long term health of their legs and
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: how they feel throughout the course of the season.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that would just be a major construction project.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: That would be something, wasn't it If that we tried
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: to build a tray in the north parking lot, that would.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: Be wild where it would have to go.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: I think you're right because you can't put it south well.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: You limit for t Mobile Park is right below exactly
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: unless you got rid of the Walmu Center, the Wameu Theater.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: Then where would where would Kid Cutty.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Go when he comes to town. That's a good show.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: By the way, Kid cutting the New York super.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: Bowl Cleveland guy.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a dude.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: I like his music. That may surprise some of you listening.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: I'm an give Kid Cutty fan. Whiz Khalifa too. By
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: the way, Pittsburgh guy up next, not a Pittsburgh guy.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Not a Whiz Khalifa guy, Ian Fornett. I don't think
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: he's a Whiz Kalifa guy. Ian Forness the Mayor and
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Maple Valley tell us when it's on his show coming
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: up next on nine three point three kJ R f M.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Yum to start. Are you okay?
- 1:17:30Speaker 10: Welcome in Greg Dell Show, Greg with d G S
- 1:17:33Speaker 10: Greg Belle, who who a you know it's not even
- 1:17:38Speaker 10: his rookie year because he's kind of Drew lock like
- 1:17:41Speaker 10: he was here then he left and he came back,
- 1:17:43Speaker 10: but he put his headsets away.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: I did to let you know if you're not on
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: the YouTube channel. I see my main seat that faces
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: the producer.
- 1:17:51Speaker 10: You're actually awesome to do that. I do appreciate that
- 1:17:54Speaker 10: because I don't do that for Softy. I'm sure as
- 1:17:56Speaker 10: hell won't do it for Softy. I'm not gonna do
- 1:17:58Speaker 10: that for him. And you guys don't do cross talk
- 1:18:00Speaker 10: in the morning now. We Chuck's kind of too big
- 1:18:02Speaker 10: for that.
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: They have one last thing.
- 1:18:06Speaker 10: We could do one last I mean, we can all
- 1:18:07Speaker 10: do one last thing in the second last segment.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Chuck doesn't like you.
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: Apparently, apparently he didn't like anybody else after he went
- 1:18:14Speaker 10: Apparently he went out.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: People told me he went after me a little bit
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: today on.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: Why why do you guys have a big disagreement on
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: Dan Wilson.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: Oh, And I say, it's not Dan Wilson's fault.
- 1:18:25Speaker 10: Most of the time you were in the massive minority.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: And I like it. I just I've I've read the
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: tee le's and what I've been told by those I
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: know in the Mariners that Jerry to Poto has a large, large,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: large say about the daily operations of the team during games.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: And then when Steve Phillips and Jim Bowden came on
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: with Jessamin and me. It reinforced the GM. When I
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: covered baseball, the GM said, Okay, here's the plan for
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: the week. Let's try to stay away from this guy
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: if this comes up, and then that they let the
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: manager manage. But Jim Bowden and Steve Phillips both told us, uh, Greg,
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: when you used cover, is not like that anymore. They
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: do daily meetings to tell them tonight you do this. Yeah,
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: and not just the Mariners, but that's league wide. That's
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: that's the norm.
- 1:19:08Speaker 10: There's a thing we had, you know, Sarah's on every Thursday,
- 1:19:11Speaker 10: and on yesterday he wrote a great story in The Athletic.
- 1:19:13Speaker 10: I don't know if you saw it, the cut, the
- 1:19:15Speaker 10: cutting back and the scaling back of iPad use in dugouts,
- 1:19:20Speaker 10: and I think there's kind of an interesting along those
- 1:19:24Speaker 10: lines evolution of they were using so much data that
- 1:19:30Speaker 10: since and it's really been going on for ten years,
- 1:19:32Speaker 10: since twenty sixteen, and I think it was mid early
- 1:19:35Speaker 10: mid June this year.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: They they really.
- 1:19:38Speaker 10: They they because all those iPads are MLB issued, and
- 1:19:41Speaker 10: they blocked a lot of the stuff that they were
- 1:19:43Speaker 10: doing and able to do with that, and I think
- 1:19:46Speaker 10: with that that put a lot more back on the
- 1:19:49Speaker 10: manager's table because they were using so much data that
- 1:19:53Speaker 10: it was, you know, from the GM and and when
- 1:19:55Speaker 10: we say GM, from the baseball outside right, the research,
- 1:19:58Speaker 10: the analytic it's there's this weird I think there's folks
- 1:20:01Speaker 10: that think and I don't want to insult him, these
- 1:20:03Speaker 10: intelligence but it's not just Jerry and Justin to do
- 1:20:05Speaker 10: the analytics. I have no idea how big their department is.
- 1:20:09Speaker 10: I can speak on the Krakens part. It's an office
- 1:20:12Speaker 10: of like ten people for hockey analytics and that's eighty
- 1:20:15Speaker 10: two games, yeah, right, eighty four.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: I guess now.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: I can't imagine how big the the department is for
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: the Mariners. It's massive.
- 1:20:21Speaker 10: Like there a guy used to do the website is
- 1:20:22Speaker 10: on there, right, David whatever his name is. So like,
- 1:20:26Speaker 10: there's a whole bunch of those guys. A lot of
- 1:20:27Speaker 10: that data has been cut back. I wonder, I wonder,
- 1:20:29Speaker 10: I'm wondering this out loud. I wonder if some of
- 1:20:32Speaker 10: the power has gone back to the managers in the
- 1:20:34Speaker 10: last month and a half that didn't exist before. Before
- 1:20:37Speaker 10: they were just hitting the table, like you know, was saying,
- 1:20:39Speaker 10: they just hit the tab on all the stuff that
- 1:20:41Speaker 10: they were. I didn't Baseball restrict that because they saw
- 1:20:45Speaker 10: an increased number. His story was interesting. There was an
- 1:20:48Speaker 10: increased number of teams starting to call pitches from the dugout,
- 1:20:53Speaker 10: and it's almost like reverse sign stealing. They were aieing
- 1:20:56Speaker 10: themselves to death.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Like it's what I think.
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: That's why I thought Edgar was a perfect hire in
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: that situation.
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: These guys brains are getting fried by yeah.
- 1:21:05Speaker 10: And Edgar's not that guy, so he's the opposite, right, Yes,
- 1:21:08Speaker 10: but they were saying what they were doing is they
- 1:21:11Speaker 10: had like they're charting. Okay, so Julio's at bat, so Texas,
- 1:21:15Speaker 10: let's say it was Texas. They're like, he's gonna see
- 1:21:19Speaker 10: he wants to see slider sucre. But they would AI
- 1:21:22Speaker 10: like literally pitches. It was almost the opposite of of
- 1:21:24Speaker 10: a of a sign stealing and sec there was no
- 1:21:27Speaker 10: and then the other guys than in a dugout, he
- 1:21:30Speaker 10: could glance over and say, here's what this picture throws.
- 1:21:33Speaker 10: In this situation and get a sign from the dugout
- 1:21:36Speaker 10: wasn't so much a sign stealing, but it was AI
- 1:21:38Speaker 10: was given it to you. There's no trash can involved.
- 1:21:40Speaker 10: And so there was so much data going on that.
- 1:21:43Speaker 10: Baseball said, wait a second, Like you know, and it's
- 1:21:47Speaker 10: odd because every other sport you watch an NFL, we're
- 1:21:50Speaker 10: watching the NFL. Guys go to the sideline, doesn't matter
- 1:21:53Speaker 10: what position they're holding an iPad. They're not doing this.
- 1:21:56Speaker 10: There's still pictures like which are Buddy Jeremy Young used
- 1:21:58Speaker 10: to have to develop there on the sideline.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: No, it's this hockey players with the idleholl bench. The
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: iPads are still images. They're not allowed to watch video
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: for fans to know that they're looking at what used
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: to be the facts pictures, right that just happened to
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: be on.
- 1:22:11Speaker 10: It's easier, so it's less. This is that little hole
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: they have in the wall about underneath the stadium. They're
- 1:22:16Speaker 10: not developing anymore. But yeah, and like you see hockey
- 1:22:19Speaker 10: players like you, guy comes off a shift, he's got
- 1:22:22Speaker 10: a minute and a half before he goes back on
- 1:22:24Speaker 10: and he's reaching back, grabbing and looking at the thing.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: I'm like, what do we you know?
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: I mean which I mean so Baseball unanalyticed itself in
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: mid June a little bit.
- 1:22:32Speaker 10: Yeah, because guys were loading stuff on there and they're
- 1:22:35Speaker 10: getting permission from MLB.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: You had to.
- 1:22:37Speaker 10: It's like any company computer, but there was so much
- 1:22:40Speaker 10: information on there that back then, back and forth, it
- 1:22:43Speaker 10: was like kind of taking the human element out of
- 1:22:44Speaker 10: the game and they're just using AI for all this.
- 1:22:46Speaker 10: It's a fascinating story that he wrote in The Athletic
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: Last a couple of weeks ago, and we talked about
- 1:22:50Speaker 10: it yesterday. So I wonder, I and I'm just guessing here,
- 1:22:53Speaker 10: but I wonder if some of the power has gone,
- 1:22:55Speaker 10: at least in terms of in game, like in game
- 1:22:58Speaker 10: has gone back to the manager. Now there's other thought
- 1:23:00Speaker 10: that I like. I'm a big twenty four fan with
- 1:23:02Speaker 10: key for Sutherland. Yeah, I wonder if he's got a
- 1:23:05Speaker 10: little little earbud in there. Chloe, what do you think
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: I would disconnect that thing in a hurry?
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: Man?
- 1:23:13Speaker 10: Chloe? What do you what do you see here? What's
- 1:23:15Speaker 10: the schematics look like for this building? Go to de Villa?
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: Nick? Devilla is really good Devilla, Let's hope. But who knows?
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: What do you got? Today?
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Corbyn's last visit pre training camp, Happy training camp. Eve
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: to you be right, sir, appreciate it.
- 1:23:36Speaker 10: We h that's Corbyn twelve twenty today we're gonna talk
- 1:23:40Speaker 10: a little bit about Jaylen Milroll. Yeah, didn't look great
- 1:23:44Speaker 10: during OTA's in mini camps, missing a lot of throws.
- 1:23:46Speaker 10: We're hoping to see some progression. Maybe we will. It's
- 1:23:49Speaker 10: still very early year one, before year deal. He's the
- 1:23:51Speaker 10: developmental guy, but we'll talk about him. Kind of the
- 1:23:53Speaker 10: quarterback room as a whole. Drew Locke kind of the
- 1:23:56Speaker 10: perfect NFL backup in a lot of ways.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Get to that.
- 1:24:00Speaker 10: Uh, Danny O'Neil on the one o'clock hour his week,
- 1:24:02Speaker 10: we visit. He's pissed at Portland too, which is good.
- 1:24:04Speaker 10: I like a pissed off Danny O'Neil. And then Rob
- 1:24:06Speaker 10: Brett Funnest. Yeah, Rob Neil, Rob Rangill, we'll revisit our
- 1:24:10Speaker 10: our rookie and maybe second year guys. He's uh, he's
- 1:24:12Speaker 10: forty obviously the young guy. So we'll talk to Rob
- 1:24:14Speaker 10: rang at two o'clock heading into the training camp.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: But Clark has a massive opportunity now that Nick Worry's
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: not gonna be.
- 1:24:19Speaker 10: In the massive opportunity for Budd Clark. Yeah, he might
- 1:24:21Speaker 10: have that anyway, but now it's even more so. Tyle
- 1:24:24Speaker 10: cottam okay, good, but but but you go over there
- 1:24:26Speaker 10: for a little while.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: Kinda just got married, I see. Yeah quite a year, Yeah,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: very much so.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: And he still sounds like Mike McDonald. He does. And
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: forness is up next we have his Moger from twelve
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: until three, Greg Bell, Jess Macker. Thank you for listening.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: We will talk to you from the Virginia Mason Athletics
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Center on Wednesday. I'm headed out to training camp tomorrow
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: and Sunday read my stories at the Newstribune dot com.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. Every weekend ends up next on ninety
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: three point three kJ RFM
