- 0:07Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Deja.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm nine years old.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Because of my mom's earth habit, I spend most of
- 0:13Speaker 1: my time in foster care.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Deja doesn't realize that people have a tendency to be
- 0:19Speaker 3: a product of their environment. That the things said, felt,
- 0:23Speaker 3: and experienced around them shape their future and disturb their destiny.
- 0:30Speaker 4: My childhood was not a regular childhood with a mother
- 0:33Speaker 4: and a father in the house.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I grew up without my parents.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Five years from now, I'm going to leave for my
- 0:42Speaker 1: foster home for the first time. And two years later,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm going to.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Run away again.
- 0:49Speaker 3: By now, Deja's decisions are driven by her desire for love.
- 0:53Speaker 3: The people that are around her are destined to fail her.
- 0:57Speaker 3: In fact, they lead to her destruction and her utter,
- 1:01Speaker 3: utter disappointment.
- 1:04Speaker 4: When I was 14, that was the last time I
- 1:07Speaker 4: actually seen my mother alive.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And the last thing.
- 1:11Speaker 4: That she told me was that she loved drugs more
- 1:14Speaker 4: than she loved me.
- 1:16Speaker 2: That always stuck with me, and that made me.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Say, well, if you don't love me, somebody out there
- 1:22Speaker 4: is going to love me. Just because it's not you,
- 1:24Speaker 4: that doesn't mean that I'm not going to find somebody
- 1:26Speaker 4: to love me.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Two years later, at the age of 18, I'll meet
- 1:31Speaker 1: a man named Eric who abused me and introduced me
- 1:35Speaker 1: to my other love, drugs.
- 1:39Speaker 3: If nothing changes, this would be all of Deja's life.
- 1:43Speaker 3: A never-ending cycle of bad decisions that continue to perpetuate
- 1:47Speaker 3: themselves for the rest of her life.
- 1:50Speaker 4: I ended up finding my kid's father. I was 18
- 1:53Speaker 4: when I got with him. And he introduced me to
- 1:56Speaker 4: how to sell drugs, and so that's how my pathway
- 2:00Speaker 4: to selling drugs began.
- 2:02Speaker 1: When I'm five months pregnant with my fourth child, I'll
- 2:06Speaker 1: be arrested for selling cocaine.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Well, the first time I got in trouble was for stealing.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Then I got caught for this charge for trafficking cocaine.
- 2:16Speaker 4: And that's when I came to the realization of, I
- 2:20Speaker 4: don't want this life.
- 2:21Speaker 2: This is not what I want.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Even though I do all those things.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I've learned I don't have to be defined by them.
- 2:33Speaker 3: With the Texas Offenders Reentry Initiative, she can go from
- 2:37Speaker 3: a pathology of bad choices and decisions to a positive
- 2:41Speaker 3: outcome and end. She may have done what they say
- 2:44Speaker 3: she did, but she is not who they say she was.
- 2:50Speaker 4: When I first moved down here, I didn't know about
- 2:53Speaker 4: the Torrey program. I was basically trying to do things
- 2:56Speaker 4: on my own. But then I found Torrey. And when
- 3:00Speaker 4: I found Torrey, I found hope. You have to come
- 3:03Speaker 4: to Torrey with the mind of you want to change.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I'm a totally different person who I am today.
