Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to the Jagslam this morning. I'm kind of Annie Stevens,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Brian Sexton, and John Oser are with me today as
- 0:22Speaker 1: we get ready to talk about week three for the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Jags because they had to Buffalo from Monday night football.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Let's kick things off with big things. Big thing number
- 0:28Speaker 1: one is stay the course. There's a lot of talk
- 0:30Speaker 1: about panic. We didn't see what we wanted to see
- 0:32Speaker 1: out of the Jaguars in the first two weeks of
- 0:33Speaker 1: the season. But Hoyle Litlcon, captain of this team, says,
- 0:36Speaker 1: there's no panic right now.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think you always focus on the now. Obviously it
- 0:41Speaker 2: was two games. There's a lot of games left, like
- 0:45Speaker 2: you said earlier, but I gotta keep on saying each
- 0:46Speaker 2: game is a race in itself when I like to
- 0:48Speaker 2: win races. So let's win the next game. That's we
- 0:50Speaker 2: have in our play doing everything it takes to uh
- 0:52Speaker 2: come out with the right energy against Buffalo. Stay in
- 0:55Speaker 2: our books, stay on our film. We know we have
- 0:57Speaker 2: all the talent in the in the locker room and
- 0:59Speaker 2: win games. So has go out a women kind of
- 1:01Speaker 2: focused on ourselves on the inside. Obviously the outside has
- 1:04Speaker 2: a lot of noise going on out there. They don't
- 1:05Speaker 2: know what goes on in the locker room on a
- 1:07Speaker 2: practice field, so we know we're capable level. We gotta
- 1:09Speaker 2: go out there and improve it every week.
- 1:10Speaker 1: From account ran, I think a lot of this feels
- 1:14Speaker 1: a lot worse because of the way things ended last season.
- 1:16Speaker 1: This team is zero and two. What do they need
- 1:18Speaker 1: to do to get right? On Monday night?
- 1:19Speaker 3: So I was at luncheon yesterday with Tony Bisselli, and
- 1:21Speaker 3: famously the most sudden turnaround in Jaguars history is ninety six,
- 1:25Speaker 3: where they started four and seven and went on a
- 1:27Speaker 3: seven game winning streak to the AFC Title Game and
- 1:30Speaker 3: only their second season. So I asked what was it
- 1:33Speaker 3: that year that turned it around, and he said, leadership.
- 1:36Speaker 3: It's a given that the coaches have to lead them out,
- 1:38Speaker 3: but this is on the players in the locker room.
- 1:42Speaker 3: We talked a lot earlier this week about Trevor Lawrence
- 1:44Speaker 3: and the leadership he showed in the post game on Sunday.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Now it's time for the rest of the leaders, guys
- 1:50Speaker 3: like Foyer, Alucon on the defensive side, Josh Allen. The
- 1:54Speaker 3: leadership is what we'll get this team focused and ready
- 1:57Speaker 3: to play better football. On Monday in Buffalo.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's important those guys lead. It's also important
- 2:03Speaker 4: that they play well, which means making plays at the
- 2:05Speaker 4: end of games. Bucky Brooks has said it all week,
- 2:08Speaker 4: the great Jay Wars media analyst, that we have big
- 2:13Speaker 4: players have to make big plays in big moments for
- 2:16Speaker 4: the last two months, meaning the last six weeks dating
- 2:19Speaker 4: back to the last season, that hasn't happened. So the
- 2:21Speaker 4: reason they can stay the course, they don't do ththing complicated.
- 2:23Speaker 4: They have to play better. Big player one.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Of them might be missing on Monday Night Football or
- 2:28Speaker 1: big thing Number two is injury watch. We saw Evan
- 2:30Speaker 1: Ingram get scratched from week two because he suffered a
- 2:33Speaker 1: hamstring injury right during warm ups before that game. He'll
- 2:37Speaker 1: be kind of day to day as they watch and
- 2:38Speaker 1: evaluate is the week goes on. According to head coach
- 2:40Speaker 1: Doug Peterson, John, how's this affect the offense if they
- 2:43Speaker 1: don't have Evan Ingram once again?
- 2:44Speaker 4: Well, some I don't think as much as we thought
- 2:48Speaker 4: because Brenton Strange played well. There are tight end options.
- 2:52Speaker 4: You should be able to get through a week or
- 2:54Speaker 4: two without one of your top players, And frankly, I
- 2:58Speaker 4: think they need to go a different direction offense anyway.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Brian Thomas Junior Christian Kirk gave Davis Breton Strange Travis
- 3:05Speaker 4: Etn as listed off four guys that you trust. Brent
- 3:09Speaker 4: Strange may have to earn that a little bit more.
- 3:10Speaker 4: But look, there are options in this offense. Just losing
- 3:13Speaker 4: Evan Ingram should hurt you, but it's not like this
- 3:17Speaker 4: offense can't function without him right now.
- 3:19Speaker 3: No, And the name that you just said, John that
- 3:21Speaker 3: strikes me the most is Travis Etn. The reason that
- 3:24Speaker 3: Evan Ingram is such a valuable part of this offense
- 3:26Speaker 3: is he is that hot option when all things break
- 3:29Speaker 3: down and they bring three pass rushers Greg Russeau, von
- 3:33Speaker 3: Miller and that Oliver for the Buffalo Bills Defenseive Long,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you got to get rid of the ball in a hurry.
- 3:37Speaker 3: To me, that would suggest that Travis Etn is going
- 3:39Speaker 3: to have to be a bigger option in the passing game,
- 3:41Speaker 3: or at least I wouldn't it have to be. If
- 3:43Speaker 3: he is, he can help overcome the absence of Evan Ingram.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Absolutely. As for our opponent on Monday Night Football, our
- 3:50Speaker 1: final big thing, Bill's Bill's Bills, They're two and oh
- 3:52Speaker 1: heading into this they've had an impressive performance against the
- 3:55Speaker 1: Miami Dolphins last week. They're coming in well rested.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Brian.
- 3:58Speaker 1: When you look at the team, what's an factor for them?
- 4:00Speaker 1: What are you worried about?
- 4:01Speaker 3: Well, the front is very difficult to block. Von Miller
- 4:05Speaker 3: looks like the von Miller of before his most recent
- 4:08Speaker 3: ACL which was two years ago at Oliver I thought
- 4:11Speaker 3: was the most difficult guy the Jaguars had to handle
- 4:13Speaker 3: in the middle. And then of course Greg Russeau, who's
- 4:16Speaker 3: a big, long Kalais Campbell, Eric Armstead kind of body.
- 4:21Speaker 3: He wasn't active, he didn't play last year against these
- 4:24Speaker 3: guys in London. So now they've got those three against
- 4:27Speaker 3: an offensive line that hasn't played very well. Okay, so
- 4:29Speaker 3: that's a trouble area. However, perhaps that's the rallying point.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I mean, perhaps this is where those guys, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 3: stiffen up and play to the capability that Doug Peterson
- 4:40Speaker 3: and Phil Rousher saw in them when they set this
- 4:41Speaker 3: offensive line before the start of the regular season.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll go chalk here. I do rankings every week
- 4:47Speaker 4: for Jaguars dot Com. My comment next to the Bills
- 4:50Speaker 4: so far has been. Josh Allen still plays quarterback for
- 4:52Speaker 4: the Bills. As long as they have him, he's very dangerous.
- 4:55Speaker 4: He makes them dangerous. The quarterback can score and make
- 4:59Speaker 4: plays in red zone when everything else is broken down.
- 5:02Speaker 4: He can will then the touchdowns because of his size.
- 5:06Speaker 4: As long as he's there, they're good. Everybody thought this
- 5:08Speaker 4: was the season of transition for them. They're playing as
- 5:11Speaker 4: well as anything in the league. I have them number
- 5:13Speaker 4: two in the league and it's because Josh Allen plays
- 5:16Speaker 4: quarterback for the Bills.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Absolutely stay with us here on Jagzam. Coming up after
- 5:20Speaker 1: the break, we'll hear from Jaguars players in the locker
- 5:22Speaker 1: room see where the state of the team is heading
- 5:24Speaker 1: into Monday Night football. Jagzam today brought to you by
- 5:32Speaker 1: Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. You can head over to
- 5:34Speaker 1: Fields Auto dot.
- 5:35Speaker 5: Com depending on who you are. I know, for me
- 5:40Speaker 5: is I know I understand the implications of Monday night
- 5:43Speaker 5: and what that is to a lot of other people.
- 5:45Speaker 5: But you know, as we tune the noise out, you
- 5:46Speaker 5: kind of want to tune that out for a little
- 5:47Speaker 5: bit as well. When you get into the atmosphere, it'll
- 5:49Speaker 5: definitely shake Over, Welcome.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Back to the Jagzam. Here in the Hyundai Studios Andre Cisco,
- 5:54Speaker 1: they're talking about how you get up for Monday night football.
- 5:56Speaker 1: If you can't get high energy for Monday night football,
- 5:58Speaker 1: there's probably something wrong with you that always. I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 1: it's just the premier night I feel like for football
- 6:03Speaker 1: and everyone's watching you. You're on a national stage and
- 6:06Speaker 1: hopefully the Jaguars can come out and perform.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Listen, You're gonna have to match their energy. I mean,
- 6:10Speaker 3: the Buffalo is an energetic place as it is now.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You put the prime lights, the primetime lights on on it,
- 6:17Speaker 3: then if you don't bring the energy, you're gonna be
- 6:20Speaker 3: run over by it.
- 6:21Speaker 4: It is a tough spot because it's team wants the Jags.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I mean they have matched up well, the Jaguars have,
- 6:26Speaker 4: so you had primetime a team that is not going
- 6:29Speaker 4: to overlook you.
- 6:30Speaker 1: They need to be ready team the Jags beat last
- 6:32Speaker 1: year in London, so I'm sure that's on their mind
- 6:34Speaker 1: as well. Speaking of the locker room yesterday, we heard
- 6:37Speaker 1: from Foya Luikin a little bit earlier, but we also
- 6:39Speaker 1: talked about on the show yesterday just about that linebacker rotation.
- 6:42Speaker 1: We saw Ryan Nielson likes to sub in different players
- 6:44Speaker 1: and Foya Luik and playing a lot less. He's used
- 6:46Speaker 1: to playing pretty much every snap, and he kind of
- 6:48Speaker 1: addressed that in the locker room yesterday.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And I got all the faith in the linebackers and stuff.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And I came in this league not playing every snap.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I've been blessed to be able to play every snap
- 6:57Speaker 2: for what my third year all the way to my
- 6:58Speaker 2: seventh year. Over the coach needs, but the the goal
- 7:01Speaker 2: here is to win games down the road. Although want
- 7:03Speaker 2: to win the games now. Obviously don't look right when
- 7:06Speaker 2: we're not winning games right now. So let's get to
- 7:08Speaker 2: winning the games now and you'll see a payoff down
- 7:10Speaker 2: the road. But let's focus on the now. Don't worry
- 7:12Speaker 2: about the snapcots and stuff. Let's worry about wins. Uh,
- 7:16Speaker 2: how the linebackers look as a unit. Everything's gonna work
- 7:19Speaker 2: out if we execute our g our players that we're
- 7:21Speaker 2: supposed to.
- 7:22Speaker 1: John feels like there's some understanding there. We've talked so
- 7:24Speaker 1: much about that draft and develop angle. You gotta start
- 7:27Speaker 1: developing guys early cause of what we saw last season
- 7:29Speaker 1: where you weren't giving them reps and then at the
- 7:31Speaker 1: end of the season you can't count on them. So
- 7:33Speaker 1: I think they're trying to do some of that with
- 7:34Speaker 1: Ventrel Miller and and some of some of the other linebackers.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And obviously doesn't look great right now when you're not
- 7:39Speaker 1: winning football games, but trying to make a plan.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Yeah, there's some understanding there. I I I kind of
- 7:44Speaker 4: wonder how long the understanding last if if you lose
- 7:47Speaker 4: a couple more games. Sure, I I don't think it's
- 7:49Speaker 4: a major, major thing. I think Foy he is still
- 7:53Speaker 4: playing eighty one per cent of the plays. He's probably
- 7:55Speaker 4: down s eight nine plays a game. Uh, that can
- 7:59Speaker 4: be a lot for the wrong eight or nine plays.
- 8:02Speaker 4: I don't necessarily find it that interesting along the defensive
- 8:06Speaker 4: front case irritate all the time the linebacker and the
- 8:09Speaker 4: DB's thing. I still have to watch it. It's unorthodox.
- 8:13Speaker 4: I get the point. Maybe it's just a little unusual
- 8:16Speaker 4: for the old school guy.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Listen, it'll evolve. I mean there will be times where
- 8:20Speaker 3: you know, on Monday night, you'll think he should be
- 8:22Speaker 3: in the game. They've only played two games together, and
- 8:25Speaker 3: Ryan Nielsen's only had two games to work This system.
- 8:28Speaker 3: In my understanding is is that as they get more
- 8:31Speaker 3: familiar with the situations and the players, that this will
- 8:35Speaker 3: will find its point. However, listen Tampa last year, Tennessee
- 8:39Speaker 3: last year, at the end of the season, he didn't
- 8:41Speaker 3: look my opinion, only he looked like he had worn
- 8:44Speaker 3: down playing one hundred percent of the snaps. He's one
- 8:46Speaker 3: of the most dependable players this team has ever had
- 8:49Speaker 3: playing linebacker, and they want to give him the ability
- 8:52Speaker 3: to be fresh at the end of the season. So
- 8:54Speaker 3: they're trying to implement this. Now I get it, but
- 8:57Speaker 3: I do think it's an evolution and you won't see
- 8:59Speaker 3: him all the field and key situations as best they
- 9:03Speaker 3: can set it up.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Sure, we'll keep an eye on that for Monday Night football,
- 9:05Speaker 1: for sure. Also, we heard from traves Y Danna in
- 9:07Speaker 1: the locker room talking a little bit about the issues
- 9:10Speaker 1: the offense has been having, specifically in the Cleveland game,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and how maybe going up tempo a little bit could
- 9:15Speaker 1: help get things going Earlier.
- 9:18Speaker 6: We did take the pace of the game. We don't
- 9:20Speaker 6: let them get set, don't let them dial up whatever
- 9:23Speaker 6: they want to doll up. We kind of cass them
- 9:25Speaker 6: on their toes and we control the pace. And I
- 9:27Speaker 6: feel like I remember, I remember we had that long
- 9:30Speaker 6: drive and those guys are there tired, you know, and
- 9:33Speaker 6: I feel like it's an offense when you since that's
- 9:35Speaker 6: kind of like a like we're like a shark of
- 9:37Speaker 6: blood in the water. That's something you've got to go
- 9:39Speaker 6: out there and attack and make the most out of it.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Ran I know sometimes easier said than done with stuff
- 9:45Speaker 1: like that, but going up temple can't be a bad
- 9:47Speaker 1: idea right now.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Right No, I don't listen. I don't think any idea
- 9:49Speaker 3: is bad right now when what you're doing isn't working.
- 9:52Speaker 3: So whether it's up tempo or no huddle or different
- 9:55Speaker 3: personnel packages, however you want to do it, I think
- 9:57Speaker 3: everything should be on the table. And with an all
- 10:00Speaker 3: clinching staff like Doug Peterson and Press Taylor and Mike McCoy,
- 10:04Speaker 3: I would doubt that everything isn't on the table right
- 10:08Speaker 3: I would believe that they are examining every opportunity to
- 10:11Speaker 3: get this thing jump started.
- 10:13Speaker 4: I'm a big fan of up tempo if they can
- 10:16Speaker 4: do it. I guess what I mean by that is,
- 10:18Speaker 4: you know the other day, plays were getting in and
- 10:22Speaker 4: they were hiking the ball at one second. It's hard
- 10:24Speaker 4: to go up tempo and you're not getting plays in
- 10:26Speaker 4: like that. And I'm not trying to be facetious, but
- 10:29Speaker 4: in order to go up tempo, you have to really
- 10:32Speaker 4: be on the same page. You have to be going.
- 10:34Speaker 4: It's hard to do for entire games too. It's I
- 10:38Speaker 4: think it is usually a fantastic change of pace. You
- 10:42Speaker 4: can surge through a quarter or so with it. It's
- 10:45Speaker 4: hard to do it all the time. But you know,
- 10:47Speaker 4: I guess facetious or not. In order to go up tempo,
- 10:50Speaker 4: everybody has to be on the same page. They weren't
- 10:52Speaker 4: on the same page on Sunday.
- 10:53Speaker 1: They were not, and that whether you're going up temper
- 10:55Speaker 1: or not was an issue for them. Clearly say with
- 10:57Speaker 1: us here, we're going to give you our predictions for
- 10:59Speaker 1: what the headlines are gonna be Tuesday morning after Monday
- 11:01Speaker 1: night football, and Buffalo said it a Florida's trusted and
- 11:07Speaker 1: reliable moving company set it's proud to be the official
- 11:10Speaker 1: moving company in the Jacksonville Jaguars. To get a guaranteed quote,
- 11:12Speaker 1: you can visit sud it dot com slash jacks. All right,
- 11:22Speaker 1: here's where we put our predictor caps on. We're gonna
- 11:24Speaker 1: try and figure out what the headlines are gonna be
- 11:26Speaker 1: on Tuesday after the Jags and Bill's face off in
- 11:29Speaker 1: Monday Night Football. Brian, when you look ahead, what do
- 11:31Speaker 1: you think we'll see?
- 11:32Speaker 3: Well, my headline is a bent but not broken, kind
- 11:34Speaker 3: of like some of those tables that the Bill's Mafia
- 11:37Speaker 3: jump onto in their parking lot, which is psychotic and
- 11:42Speaker 3: fun at the same time, usually on fire as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 3: those folks are serious. And I think that the Jaguars
- 11:49Speaker 3: are going to go play well.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Now.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I thought they'd played well last week, and they did
- 11:52Speaker 3: in the second half. I thought they play well on
- 11:54Speaker 3: Opening Day, and they did for the first three quarters.
- 11:57Speaker 3: So I'm gambling that the momentum that they built in
- 12:00Speaker 3: the second half last week, plus the just sheer disgust
- 12:03Speaker 3: of the way that that game went by the players
- 12:06Speaker 3: that I talked to this week tell me that I
- 12:08Speaker 3: think they're going to go play well. That I don't
- 12:09Speaker 3: know that that's going to be enough to overcome Josh
- 12:12Speaker 3: Allen in that Buffalo crowd in prime time and as
- 12:15Speaker 3: John said, with the bullseye on their back, because the
- 12:17Speaker 3: Jaguars have beaten them the last two times they've played them,
- 12:19Speaker 3: so but I think they'll play well. So, you know,
- 12:22Speaker 3: bent like one of those tables because they kind of
- 12:24Speaker 3: are right now but not broken, and we'll see where
- 12:27Speaker 3: it goes.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we're on the same page. I went
- 12:30Speaker 4: with what's next, and I hope I'm wrong. I see
- 12:34Speaker 4: a game where the Jaguars come out and play very well,
- 12:36Speaker 4: especially early. I think they might get a lead. I
- 12:40Speaker 4: think the adrenaline of knowing not to say what Trevor
- 12:46Speaker 4: Lawrence said after the game, but knowing what it meant,
- 12:49Speaker 4: knowing what they have to do, knowing the urgency, I
- 12:52Speaker 4: expect them to play very well. I expect there to
- 12:54Speaker 4: be a lot of hope in the second half. I
- 12:56Speaker 4: think the Bills are really good. I think this kid
- 12:58Speaker 4: were showing on It is hard to stop in big situations.
- 13:03Speaker 4: He's specially he's one of the two or three special
- 13:05Speaker 4: guys in the league. So I don't know if a
- 13:09Speaker 4: sometimes a great performance by a team isn't enough, and
- 13:12Speaker 4: I kind of worry that might be the case for
- 13:14Speaker 4: the Jags. I think if if you see a great performance,
- 13:18Speaker 4: then I think there's hope moving forward. There'll also be
- 13:21Speaker 4: zero to three if that happens, so you got to
- 13:23Speaker 4: ask what's next. But I hope I'm wrong, and I'm
- 13:26Speaker 4: not trying to be pessimistic. I just think sometimes this
- 13:29Speaker 4: is tough. This is a tough, tough spot.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I'm not entirely sure what we're gonna see in the game.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Like you mentioned, Monday night football is weird. Beginning the
- 13:36Speaker 1: season is weird. What we've seen from effort from them
- 13:38Speaker 1: has been weird. So hoping they can get up for
- 13:40Speaker 1: Monday night football. One thing I do know is that
- 13:42Speaker 1: every week, even when I felt like the team was
- 13:44Speaker 1: kind of listless, whether it's the end of Dolphins or
- 13:47Speaker 1: on the home opener against the Browns, this guy was not.
- 13:50Speaker 1: This rookie does not play like a rookie. I think
- 13:52Speaker 1: under the Monday night lights in primetime, he will shine.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Whatever his whatever, how much of a focus they make
- 13:58Speaker 1: him on the offense, when he has a play drawn
- 13:59Speaker 1: up for him, I think he will come through. And
- 14:01Speaker 1: I think on a national stage, for people to see
- 14:03Speaker 1: what Brian Thomas Junior is about will be beneficial for
- 14:06Speaker 1: this scene in the long term. I think people already
- 14:08Speaker 1: respect him, but I think he has the capability to
- 14:09Speaker 1: do that, and I don't think he's going to shy
- 14:11Speaker 1: away from primetime at all.
- 14:12Speaker 4: And I wish I'd gone you were out guy, because
- 14:14Speaker 4: he's sort of the X factor. You remember Fred on
- 14:18Speaker 4: Monday night against the Dolphins.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Yeah, seventy seven yards on the first play of the game.
- 14:23Speaker 4: All of a sudden, a kid like this special play special,
- 14:28Speaker 4: can a turn himself into a star, but can really
- 14:31Speaker 4: shape a game like this, And you get the idea
- 14:33Speaker 4: that he's the guy on this roster you.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Can do that.
- 14:35Speaker 3: I just want to touch on one thing you said
- 14:36Speaker 3: on Monday, and that is is that the intensity that
- 14:40Speaker 3: he plays with, right He seems so laid back. I
- 14:43Speaker 3: know you have him on the podcast this week and
