- 0:06SPEAKER_00: So a combination of a multitude of things, which means we could actually take our time getting ready.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Lena didn't have to be a little bit more.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And I can have breakfast.

- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I never eat breakfast.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And she made me coffee.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And we both are having coffee.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: So Sundays are nice.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: It's nice when we film on Sundays.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We're super chill.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's about to be the end of the school year for a lot of us.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: For a lot of us who have kids who go to school.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And then for the rest of us that, you know, summer is approaching, which means it's the annual what?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Uh going back home.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Migration.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Migration.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Migration back home.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I like the same way.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: But what's back home?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: That's the that's a it's funny that you ask me.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Because home is here.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Home is here.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: We talk and I talk about that a lot.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Like home is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, what does that what does that mean?
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: What is home, right?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Because when I go overseas, I have this, it's this really strange, interesting sense of like belonging.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: And things that I love.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And I I don't I don't know how to describe it, but I absolutely You mean when you go to Egypt?
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: When I go to Egypt.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: When I go to Egypt.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Now there are things that I love and things that I don't love, but it generally, I love it.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And it's funny because and I feel like that's probably like a uniquely immigrant experience.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: This concept of having like two homes, right?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: But where you where you live here and this is home and it's where all your friends are, and it's all my my family's here, right?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: But then you go home.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And it's just it's the best.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: It is the best.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Like when I go to Falestine, I mean it's it's the best.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: It's amazing, it's great.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of things to love about it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: But there are some things that we can do without.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: No, but I love everything.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: It would make me sad if I couldn't go home.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: No, that's not even an option for me.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Like always.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Like my kids love it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: My kids are upset that we're not going this summer.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, I have too many things happening here in this home.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: In this home.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: For me to go to the other for me to go.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: For me to go to the other home.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: But like let's talk about the things that we do love.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Like we can agree on.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: The food, the people.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Look, there's a lot of things that like it's there's a lot of things that are both like a very unique, like it's a, it's a it's an interesting experience.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: It's both love and hate.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I love the food.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I love the people.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I I could also hate all of these things as well.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But hate is a strong word.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: I think I think dislike, but for me, when you go there, like the the hospitality.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Like when you came to Felestine, she Hanana always talks about this.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: It was like the hospital.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Everybody knew that we were there.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Everybody.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: But like, and then they take care of you.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: And when you visit them, like you like not eating or not drinking is not an option.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it's been almost 20 years since we went on that trip?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Was it no?
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, you're right.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: It's been almost 20 years since we've been on that trip.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: I have, I saw some of the pictures.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Neither of us had children.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Now that's true, but like we look a lot better right now, even after that.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, usually I had freaking highlights.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: We need to share these pictures.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I have them.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And you know where there are?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: You know where I found them?
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: On Snapfish.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Remember?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Snapfish.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I know I have these pictures somewhere.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: We look, we look, we don't we look a lot better.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, even though we're older, do you think it's the camera?
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: But that was but that was amazing.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: We had some questionable hairstyles back then.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: I have questionable hair right now, but whatever.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, for me, like I You just agreed that I have questionable hair, right?
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Your hair is dude.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: We have this discussion every single time.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Your hair is fine.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Relax.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Guys, it's like for all for all my curly girlies out there, right?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Um, or my curly people out there, how do we, how do we get by to day two and day three without looking like this?
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It's fine, dude.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: You're overreacting.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so I'll I'll try to find those pictures, but before I post them, I'm gonna send them to you so you don't come after me.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Because I can't believe I was doing highlights back then.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I can't believe I used to sit through that.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: I know that was my influence.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was your influence.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, they look good, but I'm just gonna do it.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: They look great.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: They look great.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was a different time altogether.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that's but I do, I do agree.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Like hospitality.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: One of the things I really love is hospitality.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: The second thing I would love is the food.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I also, there is just something unique about being there.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: The yeah, honestly, the the noise, the sound.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: But it's not just everything.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: But when you talk about the food, it's not just the food.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: It's the fact that you can have some of your favorite food at the hours of the day and night.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Like 24 hours.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Like falafel.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, when I was in Palestine, we were eating falafel at 12 a.m., 1 a.m.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Like we'd go for a run, like a falafel run.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, honestly, I I fanafa.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, everything.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: But this is this is not even what I it's not about that for me.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's just one of the positives.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: In in Egypt, it's it's hilarious.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: It's like it's both I I don't know what it is, but it's it's beautiful, right?
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Like, especially in Cairo.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Cairo is like a very crowded city, right?
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: I think like the last time I had seen a statistic, which was like a long time ago, right?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: It was crazy because it was like, and obviously that's changed, but the last time, and I think they said like it's it's it's 20 million people by day and 50 million people that night, which means like five million people.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: That's the statistic is pre-COVID.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: We're we're commuting in and out of the city, right?
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: But it's crazy because it's just the noise, the the pollution, the smell, the sun, the everything.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: But it's just I love it.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: But can I before we move on to the next thing that we love, but like just going back to the food, like the freshness of the food.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And like, honestly, seriously, like you eat a tomato and it actually tastes like.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: So, can I tell you one of my friends and I were talking about that last night?
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So she lives in Egypt and she's coming here in June, right?
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Um, and she was telling me, she's like, you know, the problem you guys have, you guys being us who live in America.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: And she's like, she's like, the actual ingredients are different.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And I was like, what do you mean by that?
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: She's like, no, and we were talking about making- Has she been here before?
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: She comes, she comes every summer.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So she's she she was talking, we were talking about Michalil, which is pickles.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Pickles, yeah.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And so she was talking about pickled turnips, and she goes, I need like six months in America to make pickled turnips because it's so tough and there's it's not even good, and it has this like weird aftertaste to it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: So it's just it's funny that you say that because No, because like it's not just that you go there, and like I remember the last time I was there in 2023, I literally ate whatever.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: I didn't care about calories, I didn't and like I didn't gain a single pound.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like it's just fresh, it's healthier.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Anyway, yeah, it's not just the food that we love.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: What else?
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: What else do you like?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: What else do I like?
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I think the weddings there are awesome, especially like the sahras that we have.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: But even if I don't, even if I well, we don't you guys have that?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: No.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, not not any wedding I've been to as a Sahara.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: No, look, we have in Palestine, like in Albira, we have the Saharas in the street, and it's not just Albira, but most of Palestine.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: You know, look, it's just the whole community.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Even if you're if even if you don't know the family, even if you're not in, you can go to the Sahara.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: It's like in the street, okay?
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Anyone can go, okay?
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: But like open invitation.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it's really nice.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Like, and the kids love that.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Both my kids.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: They were.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it is a fun experience, it's a fun experience.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: That's that that's the whole thing, is that everything is an experience.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And honestly, I I look at it as I I don't I don't know what it is.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: It's funny because after a while, like when I first arrive, and I'll tell you how I feel about like things I look.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Remember, we're talking about home.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: When I first arrive, I feel like I don't belong in a lot of different ways, right?
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: In what way?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of different ways.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Like I'm just like, okay, like I can't, like it's it's crazy in the traffic, and I can't drive, and I would never be able to drive.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: And I can't, like, I there's no order, like I can't just like shove my way like this to get to what.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: But then by the time it's time for me to come back here, time for me to go home.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, your other home.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I I I'm so sad that I'm gonna leave behind all of this craziness, and I finally feel like, and I'll tell you a funny story.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: So the last time I was there, um, the first day that we got there, um, I was trying to get my suitcases at Cairo International Airport and it was running behind, and it took us 45 minutes just to get our bags, and I was just like, oh my god, the disorder is killing me.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: My second to last day there, my cousin's driving, and she goes to drop me off at my hamakala.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I felt it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Did you see my my my face?
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I'm like, it's fine, it's fine.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Anyways, okay.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: So on my like second to last day there or something like that, my cousin's driving me off, and my parents live on a one-way only street.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And so there's construction.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I was like, go, go, just go, go, go there.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Like, and she's like, but there's guards where my parents live, there's a bank underneath in the in the like the main lobby of the building.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So there's always guards, right?
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: And they're armed, but it's which is normal, right?
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So it's I uh I she I was like, no, no, just go, just go.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: She's like, it's a one-way street.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: I was like, there's construction.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Everybody's been doing it like since we've been here, since I've been here.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: She entered.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: They're all good.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And there was a tiny, tiny spot where she could pull in, but I wouldn't be able to get out on the passenger side.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And so she's like, You won't be able to just just pull in, just pull in, I'll climb out of the driver's side.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And so she looks, she looks at me.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: I took off my shoes.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: So I don't get her car dirty, and I climbed out of the driver's side, like from the passenger chair over the driver's chair, and then I put my shoes back on and she's looking at me.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: She's standing on the sidewalk, she goes, which means like go home, like this this place has changed you.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: But that's what I mean.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Let's see, that's the thing.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: You wouldn't do that here.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: If I had to, I would.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: You would, yeah, I guess.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I would, yeah.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: But it was just great.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: But that's what I mean.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Like, it's just but no, it's it's it's fun, anyways.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Other things that you love.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: For me, I love the sound of Adan or waking up.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: So that to me is just so beautiful.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Or like the the the the shit, like the reciter, like they, you know, they played the the Quran before the Adan.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Like it's just so nice.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Like everywhere you go, I love it.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: But like I know like like my in-laws live real close to a masjid, and they're just like, they're like, it's great effort.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: For a while, you're like, ah you know, side, side note, I would like to tell everybody that today I'm wearing real pants.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Even though we're filming the house, ADB is kicking in it.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, even though we're from the house.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Show them the pants, Sihti.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: I'm wearing jeans, guys.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I'm wearing jeans.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, but let me see, let me ask you.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Speaking of sounds, yeah.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: The other thing is like waking up to a guy in uh like in a big truck on a loudspeaker selling batih.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: I mean Do you guys have that?
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Uh not selling batih, but I mean anything.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Tomatoes, vegetables.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: But I mean, also differences like my is like you guys, it's much smaller.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, where we okay.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: I live on like the 11th floor of a building.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So it's it's very, you know, like different.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: The sounds sound travels different, but concept of sound, yes.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not somebody uh selling stuff.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: No, because like you know, you saw you saw where we're from, right?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: So you will hear that.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: No, but the best part is the best part is where my parents live, it's like literally in the middle of so many things in Cairo.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And so there was a lot of construction happening on the main road.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: They were building like a new bridge or something.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Things like this are not gonna you're not gonna pick it up.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was the I would love to hear this guy.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: I but there were some nights that like at 2 a.m.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I felt like I was asleep covered on the sidewalk.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Because I'm about yeah, I'm telling you, I'm on the 11th floor.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And oh, you hear like the construction happening downstairs, and somebody's like This was during your last trip.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: You're like, I can hear the sound like from the home coming.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Like that's no, no, these guys are working downstairs in the street.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: I also love the cheap services, like getting your hair down over there, yeah, it's freaking amazing.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know if I'd call it cheap services compared to America.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, I I think you would be surprised like how how it's okay.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, when I would get a blow dry, a wash and blow dry, it was 30 shekels, okay?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, that's that's pretty cheap.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know if I would consider it like I mean it's definitely gonna be cheaper than here, but I don't think I don't think Egypt is inexpensive, by the way.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: No, I mean where we're from, it's pretty expensive.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Come on, you've seen it.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Like, but I'm just saying there's some things that are like and they they do it so quickly.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: And it's not like a whole preamble, but like you walk in, okay, yeah, come sit, we'll do it for you.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I remember I I remember when I went with Lena, we both went to get our hair done by this woman named Raedah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: You still remember?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: I still remember Raeda.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: She was very nice.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: But honestly, it was, I mean, we showered.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: It's just because, you know, water is used as a tool to oppress people in Palestine.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: The Israelis, you know, the occupiers use it as a tool to oppress people.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: We couldn't wash our hair.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: So Lena's like, it's fine, don't worry about it.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna go to the salon, they have water and they'll be able to wash our hair.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: So that's what we that's what I mean.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like, and obviously that's a luxury.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Not everybody, you know, it's true.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And and I think that's the interesting thing that people don't realize about, you know, when you like I I'd always heard about it, right?
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, this is what life is like under occupation.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: And then when I visited, there's a lot of things that literally it's one thing when you hear about it and it's one thing when you experience it.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it like blew my mind.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: It blew my mind that it was just it was okay.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: It was okay for somebody.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: It's a matter of fact, unfortunately.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's a matter of fact.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: And but the thing that I yes, I don't know how I like how I'm going to be.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: It's not just water though, it's the electricity too.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: They decide when to turn on the electricity when to turn it off, but it's exactly what what really amazed me, honestly, was the fact that you have this entire population of people who are they they're not just existing, they're making the best out of this situation that they're in, and it's phenomenal.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: And so I was like, I was very like, I don't know, I was very like taken aback by that in the best way possible.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and at the same time, there's a lot of things that happened that made me like afraid, scared, not not from not not obviously like in what way?
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: In what way?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: So the fact that like I just need to like go run an errand and I need to cross a place and somebody can just point a large gun in my face, you know, and it's okay.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Like I'm supposed to just be okay with that.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Or checkpoints, yeah.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I can't, I don't, I don't know how I'm supposed to just be okay with that, you know what I mean?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Like that's it's very like it's very dehumanizing.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: It is, but unfortunately, like for you, because you've never experienced yeah, right.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So for us, now we unfortunately it's just like I said, it's a matter of fact for us and we have to deal with it and we have to manage.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: But that's what I'm saying.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Like we like the average Palestinian could care less what they do.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: We're just like F you, we're just still gonna do it.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: We're still gonna do what we gotta do.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's and I'm thinking, but that's the part that I that's the part that I really loved.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: But I think it's because I've just never experienced that before, like ever in my life.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: So I was just a little, I was, I was a little shocked, you know?
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And then when when there was one night we were my husband and I were trying to come back from Yafa, and I kept telling uh what we're looking for a cab to take us back to the checkpoint, and every single cabbie was looking at us like I was asking him to take me to like hell.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: It was the strange thing.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Because they didn't want to go into the CN areas, yeah.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: They didn't want to go, and I'm like, okay, but honestly, like I felt so like safe and and welcomed the entire time.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Like, I loved it, I had such a great experience.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but what happened that time, I think what we agreed to do was to drop you off at the checkpoint on one end, and then like we came and picked you up from the other trend because nobody would go.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nobody would go.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: It was fine.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Like, I remember me and Dia came and picked you up.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's fine.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, at least you had fun in the AFA.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, I had a great time.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but that's the thing.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I think most Palestinians, like when we went last time, and and still, you know, they give you a hard time about getting visas and permits and all this stuff, but like I went out of my way to be like, I'm not gonna take no foreign.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I'm gonna do my best, I'm gonna be prepared, and I'm still gonna go to all these pay.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Especially because you had your kids with you too.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I think, and I think you want to give them that whole you want them to see everything.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: But you know, the first time we tried, um, they returned us from the checkpoint.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Like we were trying to go to YAFA, and my son was so upset.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: I would be too.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: And I looked at him, I'm like, but this is the this is life.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry to tell you, like, we got sent back, but we'll try again.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: But this is part of life every day.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: You're talking about he was so upset.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I still remember he was like so down and upset.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: He's like, What the hell?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: We can't go.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: And I'm just he's like But think about it, Lena.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: He experienced exactly what I experienced the first time I was a big shock.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: It's not it's not something that you you're not again.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: You hear about it, you know that this happens, but you're not really sure how to, you know.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I told him this is something like I had a talk with him after listen, this is what Palestinians here go through on a daily basis, you know.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: You're that's that's just part of life, unfortunately, you know, and you just can't give up.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: And look, we're not giving up and we're gonna try again.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the next time we went, we we got through, you know?
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we love a lot of things about going back home, right?
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot of things we don't love about going back home.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: So let's let's talk about those things that we don't that we just I mean, I don't want to say we hate, but we tolerate because it's just this is what we gotta deal with, okay?
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: Give me one thing you don't like.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: One thing I don't like?
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: It's very hard for me.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Do you want me to start?
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, go ahead.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe because I have a list.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I always have a list.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you always have a I don't have a list of things I don't like.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: No, these are just talking about the traffic.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: I could so live without the traffic.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, you guys know the traffic is another, it's that's a whole other that that's a sport.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Surviving that is a sport.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: I remember when you came to Palestine and we're like, oh sorry, Ren Ramallah, there's a lot of traffic, and you just laugh.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: I was just like, this is this is traffic, this is amazing.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: No, it's surviving traffic in Cairo.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: It's a lot worse though since you've been there.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: I I will admit it's a lot worse.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: One time when I when insha'Allah at that when I take you to Egypt and you see traffic at 4 p.m.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: trip to Egypt.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you see traffic at 4 p.m.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: in in Mohendasin, you're gonna be like, no.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Literally, it looks like a a a I don't even know.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: It looks like somebody opened a box and humans just started coming out of it or everywhere.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Do you think I would do well in Egypt?
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know, the way you're describing all the people, I'm just like, oh my god.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: You would do great.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: You would do you'll be just fine.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Honestly, you'll be just fine.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm sure if you're with me, yeah, you'll be fine.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it's it is it, but I it's a lot, right?
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: It is a lot, but you just have to like time your, you know, like time your outings correctly so that you're not stuck in traffic and try to your best to kind of if you're gonna be in one part of town for a little bit, to be there while the rush is happening.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, like plan, for example, like that.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I'll listen to you, you know, this time, and this time you're not gonna be trying to survive traffic.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, and I have the top thing for most Palestinian travelers, yeah, or people, Arab Americans that go to Palestine, yeah, is the jisid.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, the Allen B bridge.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: It's like a nightmare.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, every Palestinian has to go through this.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: But I think it's just like on purpose, like to disagree.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Of course, and they they do that on purpose to to prevent us or like to kind of dissuade us from going from coming in.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: But we always like fuck you, we're gonna come.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nothing's gonna stop us.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that is the main thing.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Like, even my kids, they're like traumatized by the just it.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: I would be the whole process, I would be, it is traumatizing.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: The whole process is so like it's horrendous.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: And like now, even now, like you know how they had the visa waiver program.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Now these guys are putting in uh uh rules where you have to pre-apply to go through Tel Aviv.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: No, okay, and most Palestinian Americans that I know, they're like, af that, we're not even gonna, we're just gonna go through Jordan.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like we don't even want to go to Tel Aviv.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: I don't want you to know I'm coming.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like forget it, you know?
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's one thing.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Um, I think the other thing is the comments.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Like the first thing, Nashana, yeah, translate that.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Translate that it so it's it's true.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Nashana means you've gained weight.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right?
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Like, but I but I feel like that happens with people here.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Like it doesn't, that's just us.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, maybe Arab American family members.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that habit.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, like that has nothing to do with overseas.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: That's just on people.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Extra over there.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: No, but I feel like that's that's anywhere you go here.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Anywhere you go here where there is a series of ton, okay?
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Old aunties.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, old aunties, okay.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm sorry, that's not exclusive to us.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: That's that is any immigrant community.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, any immigrant community are gonna talk about the way that you look, they're gonna talk about your weight, what you've put on, what you've lost, you know.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Why aren't you married?
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Why aren't you married?
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Or if you have one kid, why don't you have two?
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: If you have two, why don't you have three?
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Stuff like that.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: It's not specific to Arabs.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: And it's not specific, and it's not specific to going back home.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: No, but like, dude, the comments, come on, dude.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Dude, if you went to Ohio and you had it like to a wedding there, you wouldn't even hear those comments.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: I had someone tell me, and that's Hannah.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: I'm like, dude, I know.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: And that's the thing.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Like, we know when we gain weight.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: You don't need to point it out.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: I think it's a cultural thing, you know?
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: It is, but it's like, why aren't you married?
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, when are you gonna have another kid?
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, like all these, like, what if you have more kids?
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Alhamdulillah, and I'm good.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: What if you have good?
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: What if you're having more kids?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: No, I had a friend tell me, like, this is for the cause.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: You need to procreate my.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: I'm a girl.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: You you took care of that.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: You had five.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: You're good.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: You need to proc for the cause.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Um, okay, the driving.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: We mentioned the driving driving.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: It's just honestly for me, it's it's the traffic.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: I yeah, but even the way they drive, it's like signals are like optional.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Uh Cairo's gotten a lot better.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: I would say.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: I would say Cairo, and it depends on the part of Cairo that you're in.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like certain neighborhoods, the driving is totally fine and it's super organized.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: It's just traffic.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: But that's traffic in anybody.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: The seat belts are optional for.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: The traffic is like actually, you know, in Cairo, people wear their seatbelts now.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: In Falistine, like you will get like tickets.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: But look, people still try to like.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna tell you guys something.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like it is traffic in Cairo.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: I don't wanna make it sound like it's exclusive to it.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: It's like any big, large metropolitan city, traffic is gonna be a problem, right?
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Um traffic is a problem here.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Like Yeah, I mean, but it's just like you know what?
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: There is one thing that I that I forgot to mention of the things that I love.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Speaking of big metropolitan cities.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: I love when you land, when you're going to land in Cairo and you and you look out from the plane, and it's just We don't have that option, unfortunately.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: We have to go through Jordan.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: But yeah, you talked about the gist of it.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: But you you look down and it is this insane just jungle of concrete jungle, but with spots of greenery and pools and whatever.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: It's just a it's a phenomenal experience.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: That and then I love, love, love going to any place and looking at all the city lights at night.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: It is so phenomenal.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: It's so beautiful.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Um there is uh there is there the the Citadel, which used to be, you know, Citadel Mohammed Ali Besha, right?
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: So the the Citadel used to be like the highest point at some point in in the city where you could see all of Cairo.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: And then there is one space where you sit out and you look out and you see all of the city.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna have to send you that picture so insert it so they can see.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: But it is probably the most important thing.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: So but you're talking about tight nighttime, right?
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: No, not just any anytime.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Anytime.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: But it's just the most beautiful.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't describe it.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Like, yes, it's like some areas are messy and some areas are really well planned or whatever, but I I don't know what about it.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't know what it is, but yeah, but that's something you love it.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's I think it's a feeling that I don't even know how to describe to you guys.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: I absolutely love it.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: It is this crazy where you look at and you're like, I all of these different little houses, people live everywhere, right?
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: And like I said, some of it is really neat and some of it is really well planned, and some of it is not, and some of it is messy, but all together you're like, what an what an experience.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm every every time I go, I feel so privileged that that is like a part of who I am.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you like it because it's it's quintessentially Egyptian, maybe or Egypt.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is, but it's just I don't know.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you, like, I just it every time I sit and I take that that those specific sites, even if it's crazy and it's it's messy and it's loud and it's this, I am so I feel so privileged that that's a part of who I am.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: I don't that's like and I love that.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Hopefully that makes sense to you guys.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is, but it like I I love it.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Even with the and every everywhere that I go in Egypt, even when I go to like the farming areas, right?
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Even when I go to like so this is like Cairo, big city, but even when you go out to like the beaches, even when I go down to to Luxor, to Luxor and to Aswan, it's just makes me feel so privileged that all this is a part of who I am.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: I think I feel that way when I go to uh Al Qutz, you know, Jerusalem.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: When I go on and when I go to pray, because that's something my mom always took us to whenever we were there.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: And so like I've done that now with my kids twice.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: Which is amazing, you know.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: So like once you you you've been there and you like the feeling is completely like I'm telling you, it's like uh when when I visited, I felt so again when I when I went to the Qutz, when I went to Al Qutz, I felt so privileged because I was like, I have now visited all Islamic holy sites.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I remember you called your dad.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: I called my dad from there and I was like, I made it.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: This is amazing.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: I made it because it's it's it's phenomenal.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: It's phenomenal.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Like who else can say, like in my lifetime, I've made it to Mecca Medina and to Jerusalem, right?
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's how I feel because it's so important for me.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Like I said, I the the like in 2017 and 2023, I made sure to take them because it's something my mom did with us as kids.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Like whenever we went back, yeah, that's something she made sure, you know, we did.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I I just I don't know, like I'm I'm just gonna pause here for a minute and say, like, I am, and you know, you guys know like part of our personality, obviously part of this podcast is the fact that we're like Arab American.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: But every time I stop and I think about it, and like the experiences I shared with you, my own experiences, the experiences I shared with other friends, it makes me feel so privileged that this is a part of who we are.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Like I am it makes me feel privileged and proud that this is a part of who, you know, like I'm I am that I'm a member of this community.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, anyways, 100%.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, on a less like poetic level.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be like the the person who's always like, you know, with the list.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, negative Nancy, shut up.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: There is one thing, there is one thing that I don't think even Arab Americans don't do here, which is that this this kind of annoys me.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Like people showing up randomly without calling ahead of time.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Do you guys have that?
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, it depends, honestly.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm just like, I'm not ready to greet people.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's just because I'm not a people person.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say that is a Lena thing.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: That has nothing to do with the rest of us.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: I know I'm not the only one.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: My sister's like that.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: She's just like, I don't want people to show up unannounced.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like they they do that though.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, we came for coffee.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: That's the American in you.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, maybe.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I just like I like that's part of the culture there.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Like, I still remember there was this like my dad's cousin, Allah Hamham both right now.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: But like he would come at 6 30 in the morning.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what the F are you doing?
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, and then I'm like hearing these loud voices, and I'm just like, shoo feeling.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: But like, you know, he's he's he, yeah, he's like an old school falah, Allah.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: You know, like he used to get up after fajr.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: We used to get up for fajr and go not go back to bed.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Why do I have to like endure this?
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: You're so funny.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's one thing I could do without.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Um now, wasta.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Do you want to explain wasta?
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: It's like when you uh like when when you oh a wasta, it's like when you have, gosh, what is the there is a word for it.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Um you have to like when you want to get certain things done, you need a wasta.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: You do, yeah, yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: You need a person, yeah, uh a certain contact to get things done for you.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: Stanley, let me look it up.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: We talked about the uh I have electricity and water.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: It's like it's like having like an intermediary.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: It is not an intermediary, yeah.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: No, that's what Google said.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: What no, Google doesn't know shit.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Google doesn't know.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Wasta is someone, what's the word?
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: What is the word?
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: There is a word for it.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Wasta is like you have this person, you need a connection.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: You need connections, yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: You need someone who's connected to get certain things done for you.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, intermediary.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: That's what Google said.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: No.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Um say that I was a translator, okay?
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, this is this thing bothers me too.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel bad.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Like the number of stray cats, like when we were there, like I freaking love cats so much.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: And like my daughter wanted to rescue all these cats.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: I didn't rescue any of them, but we had a really cute uh like Cats of Cairo album in our okay.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, we like the house we were staying in, like my brother's house.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: By the time we left, there was like 10 cats there.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, like like feeding me.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, here's the thing like there's a huge that's like I know it's like everywhere.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: But like it's just for my cat, I'm like, we cannot like take care of every single cat we come across.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm like, you like it was hard for me too.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: What about the dogs?
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Does she want to take care of the dogs?
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: I we didn't see any any dogs, yeah.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: No, we have straight, we have stray dogs too.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it I mean, I feel bad for them.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Of course, like that that it's like heartbreaking.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: I terrible that, you know.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Um but most people there are nice to them.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Karam, like everyone, like all the people that are people are dumb, but you know, that's everything too.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, that that's one thing.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: And then here's one thing.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I want to ask you, did you guys uh like in Egypt in general, do people like if you're at a restaurant and you don't finish your food, do you guys take the food with you?
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Because I feel like that's a strictly American thing.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Take a wee.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Like if you don't finish your food, do you do you take it with you?
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Because in America, that's normal, right?
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: I don't remember actually out with someone there, they kind of like look at you like, why are you taking like I don't know?
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Actually, I don't know.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: I don't think I I don't think I ever like I didn't care.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Like to be honest with you guys, this is for for any other Egyptian Americans watching this.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: I I generally I don't know.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: I don't remember taking something with me or not taking something with me.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I would like whatever, like first of all, I don't want to waste food.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Second of all, like I don't know.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: I know for me, like if we if if the kids ordered something and they didn't finish it, we took it back home.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: If they didn't eat it, we definitely fed it to the cats.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: But like I feel like that's the thing where in that part of the world, it's like, okay, just finish your food.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: And like we gotta remember, like the portion sizes there are not like US portion sizes.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Let's be clear.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: So a lot of people finish it, but like we didn't finish it.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: But I feel like it's not part of the I don't know.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: I can't remember if it's like I mean, let us know.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: You guys have you guys let us know.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Because and in my experience is it's not something they usually do.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, they'll get you your takeaway box.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: I don't yeah, but like it's not something that is the norm there, I think.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Let me shut off.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: I was just curious about that.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: I just wanted to know how you guys do it there.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Like if you don't do okay.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Um, anything else that you don't like without why?
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Because like we're not going home this year.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: I know it sucks, dude.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: That makes me sad.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Are you going next year?
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: I want to.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: I always want to.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: There's always a plan to.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Whether or not it comes to fruition is, you know.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Inshallah.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: I know it's it's tough.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: It's tough.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: The kids are really disappointed that we're not going to fall asleep.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: I know, but then I'm like, you know.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: But there's a lot going on.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: There's a lot going on.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Um, okay.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna go to the next and it makes me sad too, because like Okay, never, I guess we're not going to go home.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: No, we're not.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: It makes me sad because like when I think about it, it makes me sad because I'm just like, what if you can't go home?
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: That always makes me really sad when I think about it.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Like, what if you can't go home?
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Or if you go back home and then you try to come back to this home.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: That's how you go back, you're not allowed in.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Because that's a big possibility these days.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's I don't know.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: I always think about people who can't go home for for like whatever multitude of reasons, right?
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Anyways, okay, I'm not gonna.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: I'm already sad.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Let's next next second.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: No, no, don't be sad.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: This is supposed to be a fun episode.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Fine.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna ask you some questions.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: No, no, this is more in tune with like it's nothing you, it's not like a quiz or a test.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, relax.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: I'm not testing your knowledge.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Um, what's one thing you can only get back home that America will never match?
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Delivery.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: What do you mean?
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: There's delivery here.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: No, any kind of delivery.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Like how?
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Like what kind of stuff?
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, so here is so here is like it's just delivery there is different.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: So, like when I was in Egypt, I'd get on like the Talabot app, which like Talabot means orders, right?
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: So there's a bunch of different things, but then your delivery driver contacts you.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: You can have that same delivery driver stop and get you like toilet paper on the way, like add things, right?
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Like as he's as he's dropping things off.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's just delivery, it's just different.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: It's different, it's different.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, all right, okay.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Um like Uber Eats.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, Uber Eats charges you like$20 in addition to what and the dude, the dude that's delivering your food, he will just that that dude is doing the most.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: You ready for the next question?
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: I'm ready.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Um, any moments where you felt super connected to your roots?
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: I feel super connected to your roots.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, you kind of mentioned it.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: You kind of mentioned that one.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Um I mean it's like when I'm there, you mean?
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: I mean uh like all the time.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: The entire time.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, telling you, any time that I have a moment where I here's the thing, right?
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: My I I'm in a I'm in a kind of a it's not it's not a unique situation, but I'm in a similar situation, I think, to a lot of people where my family family, my parents, my siblings, you know, my immediate family, everybody lives here.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: And we all live super close to each other, alhamdulillah.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: So our kids are super tight, you know, they get to do lots of stuff together.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: Um it was very important for me to, even though my my kids, for them, this is home, right?
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: For them to feel that same feeling that I have when I go, right?
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: And I've I've never lived in Egypt.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Like I've never, I've never spent any of I've never spent more than like a summer's vacation there, right?
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: That's like the longest time I've ever been there.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Um, but I absolutely feel so connected every time I go.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: And like I said, I feel privileged that this is a part of who I am, whether it's the whether it's the the the pollution in Cairo, the sand in my eyes, the the but it's just the the the people, the the the warmth, the love.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: There's a look, there's a lot of there's a lot, it's it's like any other place.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Like are there things that are not great?
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Yes, but the things that are amazing, they literally beat everything else out.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I totally agree.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: And the things that are not amazing, we laugh about them.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Because that's the only way to do it.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Uh what's the we're gonna go back to this because you're you're claiming that this is everywhere, but what do you mean?
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: What's the most awkward or invasive question you've been asked by a relative there?
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: Um awkward or invasive question that I've been asked by a relative.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: I have a story to tell about this.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, you go ahead and tell because I think it's just my my stuff is just like normal.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: So we were there one time.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: This is before me and Amjad had kids, and we had been married for a while.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: And this-I've been married for 45 years.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: No, no, like I don't know.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: I think it was in 2006.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: So we had been married for like five six years, yeah, something like that.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: So we go there, it was his sister's wedding, and there was this old lady who was like, Oh, like she liked Amjad, his personal.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: We were at her wedding.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like mean ha do upside age, and she's related to my sister-in-law's husband.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, and they're like, Oh, she's like, Shu andakaulad, like what kids, how many kids do you have?
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Oh, I don't have kids yet.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: And then she's like, Shu.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: She's like, la la la la la.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Ma anata fiha mushkila.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: She's talking about me.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: She's like, that means she has a problem.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: She's physically like she's like infertile or something.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: She straight up just said this to Mjet and said, I have a I have the perfect bride for you.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, I swear to God.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, I laughed it off.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: It's so funny.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: But like, she was like straight on ready to find him a wife.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Well, if you wanted to have problems, okay.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Apparently, I was like damaged.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, damaged goods, right?
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: But that's pretty, yeah, that's intense.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: This is what I'm talking about.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: Like the invasive.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but that's that's everywhere.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: But I mean, she was old.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: Like, I think it comes with the tail, like they're like, they're gonna do certain things, they're gonna say, and I I don't take it personally, honestly.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: I I don't.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, oh, this is just how they are.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, honestly, you remember the story to this day.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: I think you put it took it pretty personally.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: You took it pretty personally.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I just I just it's something I remembered.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: She took it personal.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: I did not.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: She so took it personal.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, but the assumptions, oh, something's wrong with her.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, she's literally now still taking it personally.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Um, okay.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: I have this is the last question, I think.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Um what is an American habit you do that you feel you can't do there?
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: What's something you do in America that you can't do there?
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: No, nothing.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: No, nothing.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: I don't think there's anything that I can't do there.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: I think obviously depending on like where you where you are in the city, and this is just in the city, where you are in the city, you should there's probably certain things, like for example, that you can't wear.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: But nothing that I- That's what I was gonna say.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Like certain things you definitely shouldn't be wearing.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: No, but I but I but I also feel like that's not even that's like a thing of the past.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Cairo's still not like that anymore.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Not in Felestine.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: I think you there's certain parts in Felestine where it's like there's it's very conservative still.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like no, no, so so there is a part there, obviously there's parts of Cairo that are like that, but you know, well, I'll tell you one story about that.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Like I remember like this was like 10 years ago, and my mom, I called my she was overseas, and my brother had just gotten there.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, and she was complaining to me about my brother.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: She's like, if you ripped jeans.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, then he's he's he came and ripped jeans, dang.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: She's like, seriously, she's like, we don't have money for regular pants.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: But like these are the things in the in in Palestine, like in America, it's okay, right?
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: No, I think ripped jeans are like fine.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's Egypt, yeah, and Palestine.
