- 0:06The New York Yankees face the Kansas City Royals at Royal Stadium for game 2 of the ALCS on October 10th, 1976.
- 0:15The Yankees lead the best of five series, one game to none.
- 0:19And this is the national broadcast of game 2 featuring announcers Ernie Harwell and Ned Martin.
- 0:25Each manager making a few line-up changes. Why do you hear that? Because of an injury to his set-up deal, Amos Otis,
- 0:33and Billy Martin because he wanted to get some left-hand power in against the Kansas City right-hander.
- 0:39The pitchers this evening, Ed Figueroa, will be on the mound for the Yankees,
- 0:43The native of Puerto Rico with 19 wins and 10 defeats this season, 0-2 against Kansas City,
- 0:50and a lifetime mark against the Royals of 1-6, and a right-hander, Dennis Leonard, will be pitching for the Royals.
- 0:57He's won 17 and dropped 10 this year and is 1-0 against his rivals from New York.
- 1:04The umpires and managers have broken up their conference nowThe umpires station themselves out on a diamond.
- 1:11And here is the batting order for the New York Yankees. Leading off at instead of field, Mickey Rivers,
- 1:17hitting second and stationed in left, Roy White, white in left field.
- 1:25Batting third and catching for New York, Thurman Munson. Munson is the catcher.
- 1:31The clean-up hitter for Billy Martin's team is Chris Shamblett, the first baseman. Shamblett at first base.
- 1:38Batting number five, the designated batter, Carlos May, who did not start in the line-up yesterday.
- 1:45The next hitter is Greg Nettles, the third baseman, Greg Nettles, followed by Oscar Gamble, the right fielder,
- 1:54a left-hand hitter, in there against the right-hander, Leonard. Gamble and Wright.
- 1:59The number eight batter is Willie Randolph, the second baseman. Randolph at second base.
- 2:04And the batting number nine, the shortstop, Fred Stanley. Stanley at shortstop.
- 2:11For the home team here in Royal Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, it will be Jim Warford leading off.
- 2:17He'll be in left field. Al Cowan is hitting number two, playing in center field. That's Cowan and setter.
- 2:25George Brett is the number three hitter, stationed at third base. He had three hits yesterday.
- 2:31John Mayberry, the first baseman hits clean-up for Lydie Herzog's team. That's Mayberry at first base.
- 2:38Then comes the designated batter, Al McRae. McRae, the designated batter, followed by the right fielder, Tom Poquette.
- 2:47Poquette in right fieldThe next batter for the Kansas City Royals is second baseman, Frank White.
- 2:56White at second base, followed by the number eight batter, Freddie Potek, the shortstop, Potek at short.
- 3:05And the catcher is Buckner and Smart-Key.
- 3:09The PA man introducing the Royals here, and they have now taken the field.
- 3:14And Leonard, the right-hander, coming in from the bullpen, he'll be the last man on the diamond.
- 3:20The measurements down the left field line, it's 330. It's 385 into the left field area.
- 3:27And then the 410 into left setter and the right setter.
- 3:32Moving around into the right center field alley, it's 385.
- 3:36And the 330 are down the right field line, here in this beautiful ballpark.
- 3:42Now, Lydie Herzog has a problem with his hitting. His team has been in almost a month-long slump.
- 3:48They played excellent ball in the first half of the year. They slumped off in the second half.
- 3:52And Lydie hopes that they'll be the first half team here tonight,
- 3:56because he needs a victory to get this championship series even at one-one a-piece.
- 4:03Now, Leonard is taking the mound. He's shotting out and the home crowd gets him a hand.
- 4:11This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by Major League Baseball.
- 4:16It's only for the entertainment of our listening audience and any publication, rebroadcast,
- 4:21or other use of the description and accounts of this game without the express written consent of the commissioner of baseball is prohibited.
- 4:33Hey, Miss Otis, on the bed.
- 4:35Lydie Herzog told an Ed Markman, maybe, before the game that he did not think that Otis would appear in the playoff series at all.
- 4:43He injured his ankle in the first inning running out of a attempt.
- 4:47Yesterday sprained his ankle. It is swollen quite a bit.
- 4:52And he will not be used even as a pinch hitter or any other role throughout the series.
- 4:58Leonard's taking his final tune-up tosses now with Buck Martinez.
- 5:03And around the infield on defense, it'll be Brett at third, Patek at shortstop, White will be at second,
- 5:11Mayberry will be at first base, Wolford in left field, Cowens and Sutter replacing the injured Amos Otis,
- 5:19and Poquette moving over to right field.
- 5:22And the umpire, Larry Barnett, will work behind the plate.
- 5:25It'll be George Maloney at first base, Bill Haller stationed out at second, Art Brant will be behind third.
- 5:32Down the left field line, the umpire will be Larry McCoy.
- 5:36And down the right field line, it'll be the man who worked behind the plate yesterday,
- 5:40Joe Franklin.
- 5:42Day game yesterday and a night game tonight here in Kansas City.
- 5:47And the Royals hoping that their play will be just that much different day and night.
- 5:55Well, here's the man who's topped in our profession of baseball broadcasting,
- 5:59a good friend of mine, and I'm happy to be with him on this series, Mr. Ned Martin, the boy for the Boston Red Sox.
- 6:05Thank you Ernie Harwell, and thank you for those.
- 6:08And good evening again everybody on a beautiful night in Kansas City.
- 6:12It surprised a lot of people because they figured it would be cold tonight.
- 6:16It was a little chilly toward the end of the game yesterday,
- 6:18but it's in the mid-70s and almost perfect Indian summer weather.
- 6:23Denny Leonard pitching against Mickey Rivers who had two hits in yesterday's first game.
- 6:28He's two for five in the series, blubbed the butt, and it's strike one, he missed it.
- 6:34He's got 312 on the air with eight homers and 67 runs batted in.
- 6:38A big, big factor in the Yankees success.
- 6:41Bends over from the left side, checks his swing and takes ball one.
- 6:46One ball, one strike.
- 6:50Leonard throws hard, there's not a batter.
- 6:52He's got a good fastball, a fastball that will run in on a right-handed hitter and sink down towards him and away from a left-hander.
- 7:00There's a foul off the left side and the count is still one and two to Mickey Rivers.
- 7:06Leonard, still a young pitcher, 25 years old, has a good slider too.
- 7:12But it's the feeling that he needs an off-speed pitch to completely compliment himself, an off-speed pitch, a flip pitch or something like that.
- 7:21Jack knifing away for a pitch down low and inside is Mickey Rivers, the count is two and two.
- 7:27Two balls, two strikes, the Rivers were underway here at Royals Stadium.
- 7:32Big, big game for the Royals and of course for the Yankees too, but the Royals need it.
- 7:38There's a chopper foul off to the right side and for the first base dugout, the Royals dugout here.
- 7:46Now the Royals say that the teeter Leonard's pitching is his curveball.
- 7:50He's got an excellent curve and if he gets it over he can be real trouble. If he doesn't get it over there'll be another story.
- 7:57The count is two and two to Rivers and the fastball is peeled foul off the left side and Rivers loses his bat popped out of his hand.
- 8:05Still Mickey is being troublesome up there as usual.
- 8:08One of the fastest men in the league over from the California Angels and he has put a new dimension in the Yankees this year.
- 8:18Two-two pitch, outside and high, a fastball and the count is three and two.
- 8:24Rivers will trouble you once he gets on base too. He's stole forty-three bases during the season and has caught only seven times.
- 8:33He does not walk much. He comes up swinging. He walked only twelve times in the regular season.
- 8:40The pitch to him fouled off. Sometimes a lead off batter such as Rick Berlton, Knife of the Red Sox and Mickey Stanley who used to do it with the Tigers occasionally will be a good weight hitter and go for the walk to get on base but Rivers just likes to swing.
- 8:58Leonard with a three-two pitch. Paul Forey walks in this time and Rivers on base and that starts things being tough for the Royals.
- 9:08Leonard has a pretty good move to first base. Roy White, left fielder. Roy White, the left fielder who quenched the game just about yesterday late with that two-run double that made the score four to one.
- 9:23He's a switcher and batting left-handed against Leonard. He's more effective from the left side.
- 9:29White over the year. Hits two-eighty-six with fourteen home runs. Sixty-five RBI's. He went one for four yesterday and knocked in those two runs. Leonard lobs one over to first base just to keep Rivers on it.
- 9:42The main thing to try to do against the Royals running and somebody who are like Rivers on this club, the Yankee Club, is to make that first throw over there hard. Well there's the second throw that's hard and Rivers stays.
- 9:53But give them a good shot right off the bat instead of a lollipop dunk. Then they have a little more respect for you.
- 10:02White waiting and the pitch to him is slammed foul on the left field side into the crowd. Nothing in one.
- 10:10Rivers stole five bases against the Royals this year. So he's not unused to that. Major League's had a tremendous year of base stealing.
- 10:23Over three thousand stolen bases this past seasonThe first time since 1914 and that many have been stolen in baseball. Of course at that time there were only sixteen teams.
- 10:33There's another lob over there by Leonard and Rivers is right on the bag. Mickey doesn't take a big arrogant lead but he gets a good jump. He swings aroundThe upper part of his body is ready to go.
- 10:45He edges off and goes back again as Leonard plays catch with John Mayberry.
- 10:53Rivers can do things like that. He can bother you. He can bother you enough so you lose concentration on the batter. He did that several times this summer. I remember against the Red Sox Club.
- 11:06He holdsThe pitch out is made. Throw to first base and he stays the first. Rivers was not going but he bluffed going down to second. Martinez had the pitch out going.
- 11:19And then fired down to first. That's kind of a new wrinkle on the pitch out. Rivers was fairly far off the bag.
- 11:27But Mickey slipped back in and he beat the throwThe count is one and one to Roy White who is aging quietly at home plate while the throws continue to go to first base.
- 11:42White likes the ball up and over the plate. There's another throw to first.
- 11:52White will hit the high inside pitch to learn when he's batting left handed. Usually the left handed hitters like the low pitch inside like Mayberry is the Royals. There's another throw.
- 12:02Mayberry blocks it. Rivers is off balance and stays on the bag. And the crowd is getting a little restless now as Leonard continues to throw over to first base with nobody out in the first inning and one man on.
- 12:18Holding and the ground foul by White as first base coach Elton Howard.
- 12:25Top of the first just underway at Royals StadiumThe wind not as big a factor as it was yesterday afternoon. It's blowing the other way around actually from right to left.
- 12:38Waterfall over the walls in center field.
- 12:46Here's the set by Leonard.
- 12:49And the pitch. White takes the fastball outside and they count on him as two and two.
- 12:56Leonard had a few things to say today whether he was chiding the Yankees or not. He was born in Brooklyn, New York and he figured that they should have taken him. A homegrown product with a good arm.
- 13:07But I think he found a home here. He was one of the pitching reasons that the Royals went where they did.
- 13:13He teamed up with another fastball pitcher, a youngster named Letel, whom we saw yesterday coming out of the bullpen. Two hard throwers.
- 13:25A youngster who was really hurt by the injuries to Steve Cusby for most of the year and for Paul Splittor for half of it.
- 13:34Two-two pitch and it's outside and high for ball three. And Rivers is bothering Leonard.
- 13:44So right at the start, Leonard, concerned by the base runner at first, has now gone three and two to white. Leonard will go full count and throw a lot of pitches in the ball game.
- 13:59Right hander sets and throws. There goes Rivers. There's a drive in the left field for a hit. Rivers holds the secondThe ball picked up by Walford.
- 14:06Thrown in the third. Runners at first and second. Nobody out.
- 14:09Well, I had Rivers going on a three-two pitch and white banging one and mining shot at the left field.
- 14:15So the Yankees have something going in the first inning as they did yesterday. Runners at first and second. Nobody out.
- 14:21The batter is Sherman Munson. Martinez goes halfway out. He's going to toss the ball and call something to Leonard.
- 14:31Munson missed everything for the New York Yankees over the past year. Fine season. Hitting three-oh-two with 17 home runs.
- 14:43He knocked in 105 runs and finished second in the RBI race to Lee May of Baltimore.
- 14:49Munson went one for five yesterday. Goes through a lot of motions at the home plate, getting himself fed.
- 14:56He'll thrust both arms out. Getting himself all spread away. Everything's got to be perfect and here's the pitch to him.
- 15:05Heels a foul off to the right side and out of play. And it's one strike to Sherman Munson. Rivers is second.
- 15:13White at first and nobody out and both had activity already for the Kansas City Royals.
- 15:21Left-hander throwing. They had Mingoria out there early yesterday.
- 15:30One strike. And here's the set and the pitch.
- 15:37Going Munson back off the plate. One ball, one strike and Leonard is struggling.
- 15:47In the first inning yesterday when the, when the guru was in trouble, they had both Littell and Mingoria out there.
- 15:58It is Paul Splitarm who usually is a starter but because of his injury is coming back slowlyThe pitch is inside to Munson.
- 16:07The count is two and one and Whitey Herzog sending out his pitching coach, Galen Cisco.
- 16:18And when Cisco comes out, it means to talk or to buy some time for his bullpen.
- 16:23When Whitey comes out, just as when Billy Martin comes out, it's usually with the hook.
- 16:28Cisco's the pitching coach. This roughest fellow Leonard along got him to come on with a top or be a lot more effective pitcher.
- 16:37And I imagine now he's just trying to settle him down in this first inning. It's always probably the toughest inning for a pitcher, especially a youngster.
- 16:45And he's having a struggle now. Yankees have done about what they did yesterday except they reversed it yesterday. Rivers had a single and Whitey had a walk.
- 16:54And today in the first inning it's been the reverse of that, a walk to Rivers and they hit the run single by White.
- 17:01Now Cisco's gone back to the dugout. Munson back in the batter's box and let's see what happens.
- 17:07Two and one to Thurman MunsonThe table setters are on. They've done their job in both these games. Rivers and White.
- 17:18Munson stands in waiting for the two-one delivery. Leonard fires and it's fouled off. Proud of play down the right field line.
- 17:26Two and two to Thurman.
- 17:29Munson for the last few years has been living in shadows, maybe created by himself. I don't know. But he knows his worth and that he knows he's good and everybody else knows he's good.
- 17:40But he always got the feeling for a while that he was being downrated by the likes of one in one year Carlton Ciske of the Red Sox and of course in all years by Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 17:51Munson has proven himself right up with air with the best and maybe the best. Fine defensive catcher. Tough hitter in this lineup.
- 18:01Two and two. Here it is. Ground ball towards short. Potec to White for one to first and they've got the double play.
- 18:11Holding it third is Mickey Rivers seizing a throw and Mayberry runs it in. Rivers holds it third.
- 18:19Six ball three double play that helps Leonard immeasurably.
- 18:31Taylor made double play ball right to shortstop Freddie Potec. He had to come in on it a little bit because it was a not sharply hit.
- 18:38But Munson was not overly fast down the line. Was an easy man to double then as Frank White suited John Mayberry who gave it a big stretch out toward right field.
- 18:47Rivers turned the bag at third and bluffed going home trying to tease a bad throw from Mayberry but Big John just held on and ran it in.
- 18:54Rivers is at third. There are two outs now and Chris Shambliss who went two for four is up. Yankee first baseman a left handed batter with a closed stand.
- 19:03The fastball is jumped outside ball one. Shambliss hits two ninety three on the regular season. He had seventeen home runs.
- 19:13Ninety six runs battered and he was right up there among the top five or six at RBI.
- 19:19Had a fine year overall for New York. They over shift on him a little bit.
- 19:24Ground ball to second base. Frank White waits for the ball to play in throws the firstThe inning is over.
- 19:31Shambliss grounds out second to first and the Yankees have no runs. One hit and they leave one.
- 19:38In the middle of the first inning the Yankees nothing and the Royals coming up.
- 19:43Okay let's take a look at scores in the National Football League.
- 19:49Baltimore twenty eight the Dolphins fourteenThe New York Jets seventeen.
- 19:54Buffalo fourteenThe Cowboys twenty fourThe Giants fourteen. Kansas City thirty three. Washington thirty.
- 20:03Cleveland eighteen. Pittsburgh sixteen. Cincinnati twenty one. Tampa Bay nothing.
- 20:10The Detroit Lions thirtyThe Patriots tenThe Minnesota Vikings twentyThe Chicago Bears nineteen.
- 20:18Houston seventeen. Denver three. New Orleans thirty. Atlanta nothing. Green Bay twenty seven.
- 20:26Seattle twenty. St. Louis thirty three. Philadelphia fourteen. And it was open twenty seven. San Diego seventeen.
- 20:35On Monday the San Francisco forty niners are at the Los Angeles Rams.
- 20:40So those are the scores. We'll check the details the next time we get a break.
- 20:47CBS Radio Sports is bringing you the play by play action in the American League Championship.
- 20:52And there's more to comeThe World Series starts October 16th next Saturday.
- 20:57And you'll hear exclusive radio coverage play by play of the 1976 World Series right here on the CBS Radio Network station.
- 21:09Right hander Ant Siguroa taking his warm up. As Ernie told you earlier he's had trouble with the Kansas City Royals.
- 21:16He's in his six in his American League career against his club both as a Yankee and as a member of the California Angels.
- 21:23He's a short arm right hander. Good at keeping the ball low. He throws the thinker the slider.
- 21:31Any two of Jim like Leonard could use an off three pitch.
- 21:36He does not have one. He's very sneaky. He's a lot quicker than he looks.
- 21:47The first man you'll face will be left fielder Jim Wolford who was put into action yesterday when Otis was hurt in the first inning.
- 21:54Wolford a right handed batter the left fielder hit two forty nine on the air. He takes strike one.
- 22:00Wolford had one homer and twenty four on the eyes on the season and was held hitless yesterday in three trips to the plate.
- 22:07No score. We're in the bottom of the first round ball left side.
- 22:11A high hopper taking a short stop long throw by Stanley not in time at the base hit.
- 22:28A high chopper over the glow of metal. He could not have it.
- 22:31He made the play and tried to get it over there but had not much steam on the throw from deep short.
- 22:36So there goes Tigger O as no hitter.
- 22:39Al Callan the center fielder is up.
- 22:42One for three yesterday had a triple.
- 22:45When a triple right down the right field line and at that time in the game was very important.
- 22:51It was a two nothing game at that time.
- 22:53He finally scored the Royals only run right handed batter to two sixty five on the year with three homers.
- 23:00This is a called strike on him fastball.
- 23:10Well you might have thought the Royals are just one of the nights because that lead off single stirred everybody here.
- 23:18They've been waiting for something to happen. They throw his outside a little bit.
- 23:22One ball one strike.
- 23:25Jim Wolford is not a stealing type of ball player.
- 23:30Although he has gotten some whole Royal Ball Club ran this year he still twenty two bases.
- 23:36He was caught sixteen times.
- 23:41The pitch to Callan just up and in.
- 23:43Way high.
- 23:45Ball two. Two and one.
- 23:47It appeared that Callan the right handed hitter was going to try to go to right field with that.
- 23:52Of course it was not the kind of ball you could unless you swing have an inside out swing.
- 23:57Chucking with a check with Chuck Hiller the third base coach on any kind of sign and maybe have been relayed.
- 24:05Here's the set by Figueroa throws the first and back on his knees is Wolford.
- 24:10The Royals have a base runner nobody out.
- 24:17Callan is a good size.
- 24:19Punches the ball around he's not a home run type.
- 24:23Again a throw to first and they almost had Wolford leaning the wrong way.
- 24:30Had to dive back on his knees both times. Knees and stomach.
- 24:34He leads off to the end of the dirt there and the in field. There he goes.
- 24:40Pitches it foul off to the right side.
- 24:43They had Wolford going they had a play on and Callan trying to punch the ball to the right side of the infield.
- 24:50Fouled it off.
- 24:52The count on him is now two balls two strikes.
- 24:56The Royals promise that they're going to run.
- 24:59The only way to try to create something they can't stand back and wait for somebody to hit it downtown because nobody's been hitting it downtown lately.
- 25:07And they'll try to utilize their speed their base feeling ability which got them here in the first place.
- 25:16Two and two.
- 25:17Here it is there goes Wolford again ground ball base hit to the right field.
- 25:21Wolford turns second hence for third.
- 25:23It's a single for Callan the runners are at the corners with nobody out.
- 25:41Well the Royals are starting in a hurry as they had a hit run single beautifully executed by Callan into that hole caused by the runner going and people running all over the infield.
- 25:54And that is that textbook stuff Ernie.
- 25:57It sure is it's a beauty and they've got a tough man up there now.
- 26:02Best hit in the American League George Brett.
- 26:05Brett had three hits before yesterday on the year a league leading three thirty three he won it on the final game of the season.
- 26:13Three before in that game and he had three before yesterday.
- 26:20Left handed batter hits to all fields.
- 26:23The high fly ball into left field deep enough probably to get a run home.
- 26:27Roy White has it does not have much of an arm throws in the second base to run scores on the Royals League one nothing.
- 26:42So Cincinnati or Cincinnati has in my mind after the way they handled the field today.
- 26:48Kansas City's dog's first blood gets on the scoreboard on two singles and a sacrifice fly run batted in for Brett.
- 26:55He did it in God.
- 26:57Mr. Alford scored John Allen.
- 27:00He buried a big guy John Mayberry over three yesterday.
- 27:04A disappointing year for him hitting two thirty two on the season.
- 27:08Only 13 homers are used to hitting 30 or more.
- 27:11Not been ninety five runs he chops the foul ball off to the left.
- 27:18In the Yankee bullpen early.
- 27:20Dix Hidrow a right hander is starting to throw so Billy Martins in this short series as with Whitey Hesha getting people ready in a hurry when a starting pitcher gets in trouble.
- 27:31One nothing has the city for a sitting Mayberry big left handed hitter.
- 27:36So the first not in time John was saying down the batting practice before the game said I just haven't hit well all year.
- 27:43I've got to get back to the way I did he said I've been hitting defensively try to go up the middle into the opposite field.
- 27:52Wings he tried to pull that with fouls into the mid of Munson.
- 27:57He's got awesome power.
- 28:00He can hit the long ball but he just hasn't done it for them.
- 28:03Then he started to press and everything went wrong.
- 28:05He didn't change anything.
- 28:08I just need to try to get back in the groove that I was in last year.
- 28:13He strikes to it all outside.
- 28:17They'll pick him away hoping in using to go to left field.
- 28:22He will really like the ball down and in the good strikes.
- 28:25But if you tease him with a bad ball down and in he might go for it and miss it.
- 28:30One to pitch little pop up foul first base side.
- 28:34Greg Nettles under it and he takes it for out number two.
- 28:38They jammed Mayberry on that one and he fouled it up in the air.
- 28:42So John is out and Al McCrae the designated winner is up.
- 28:47Mac Ray.
- 28:48He had a rough day yesterday too went over four striking out twice.
- 28:54But then everybody had a bad day against Catfish Hunter except George Fretz.
- 28:59One nothing.
- 29:01Oil is bleeding.
- 29:03Cowan's at first.
- 29:05Two outs and McCrae up.
- 29:07He lost the batting title to Brett in the last day.
- 29:10He hit 332 on the feet.
- 29:12Right handed batter takes outside a ball.
- 29:15Really there's nothing better that could happen to McCrae than for the Royals to win the playoff and the Bennett's.
- 29:21And then to get into a World Series against his old club the Cincinnati Reds.
- 29:24He said he wished that would happen.
- 29:26There goes Cowan.
- 29:27The pitch is high.
- 29:28So does second base.
- 29:29Not in time.
- 29:30It goes into center field.
- 29:31Cowan heads for third.
- 29:33He's got it safely.
- 29:34Stolen base and an error on Munson's throw.
- 29:47And the Royals are running now.
- 29:49A stolen base for Al Cowan.
- 29:51He can pick him up and lay him down.
- 29:53Munson who releases very quickly behind the plate.
- 29:56Sometimes he's erratic with his throwing and that one was low.
- 30:00Yesterday he was saved at possible error on a fine play by Stanley.
- 30:04Nobody could get this one.
- 30:05It went past in the center field backed up by Rivers.
- 30:08But Cowan has gone on to third.
- 30:10The count is 2-0 to McCrae now.
- 30:12Runner at third base and 2-0.
- 30:14Figueroa throws.
- 30:16Misses outside.
- 30:183-0 to McCrae.
- 30:20Tom Colquette, a left handed batter is on deck.
- 30:26Dibro is not throwing anymore in the Yankee full fan but he's kind of wandering around there.
- 30:32Low outside, ball four and McCrae is on.
- 30:35First walk off Figueroa.
- 30:39Number 26.
- 30:41Number 25.
- 30:42Here's Tom Colquette.
- 30:44Colquette.
- 30:45C-O-P-U-E-T-P.
- 30:46Tom Colquette, the right fielder.
- 30:50He started the game at left yesterday and then when Otis was third he moved to right.
- 30:54That's where he is tonight.
- 30:57Had a good season at the play.
- 30:58He was right up there among the league leaders for a while.
- 31:01Finished with a 3-0-2 batting mark.
- 31:04He went 0-3 yesterday.
- 31:06Bats in a deep crouch.
- 31:08Strike calls.
- 31:10Outside corner.
- 31:14So the Royals making some noise early off Ed Figueroa.
- 31:20Figueroa tried for 20 his last time out was against the Red Sox.
- 31:24He got 15 hits and seven runs off it.
- 31:27It's outside of change up attempts and the count is one and one.
- 31:31Billy Martin in that game at Fenway the last week of the season just left him in.
- 31:35Hoping the Yankees would score for him and then Figueroa would become the first Puerto Rican ever to win 20 games.
- 31:42But it was not to be as the Red Sox beating seven to five.
- 31:45Normally of course Billy would have had him out there early.
- 31:48Out of it.
- 31:49One and one.
- 31:51Hits outside.
- 31:52Some kind of turnover fit.
- 31:54The count is two balls one strike.
- 31:58And Figueroa is struggling.
- 32:01He would have had a chance to win 20 on the final day of the season but the Yankees were rained out of a double header with the Cleveland Indians.
- 32:10Two balls one strike.
- 32:13The pitch to Porquette is slammed into right field.
- 32:16Take this.
- 32:19Do nothing.
- 32:20Go over to third base.
- 32:21They let it go through and down the third is MacRae.
- 32:24He takes.
- 32:25Do nothing.
- 32:26Hands of City.
- 32:36Tom Porquette.
- 32:38Back to single in the right field out of the reach of Randolph.
- 32:42Scoring Cowan from third.
- 32:44And there's where your running phase off.
- 32:47The Cowan stolen base and reaching third on the error.
- 32:50It was an easy run.
- 32:53MacRae went around to third base and Figueroa is still in a jam.
- 32:57Two outs.
- 32:58Runner to first and third.
- 32:59And here is Frank White, the second baseman, went over two yesterday.
- 33:04Royals two.
- 33:05Yankees nothing.
- 33:06We're in the first inning in game two.
- 33:09Wide right handed batter.
- 33:11Takes the pitch inside.
- 33:12Spinning him around almost hit it.
- 33:15Now, Sidro is up and throwing again in the Yankee bullpen in left.
- 33:28White, who prefers the high ball to hit.
- 33:32Gets a chopper to his third.
- 33:34Picked up by Nettles.
- 33:35Fires across to first in time.
- 33:38Getting White to finally end the inning.
- 33:40On a big inning it was.
- 33:44As the Kansas City Royals pick up two runs, they had three hits with the Yankee error and two were left.
- 33:51And after one inning, the score is Kansas City two, the Yankees nothing.
- 33:57Okay, let's take a look at the details of National Football League game Sunday.
- 34:01The Baltimore Colts getting pinpoint passing from Burt Jones and self defense when it counted.
- 34:06Moved into first place in the AFC East with a 28 to 14 win over Miami.
- 34:11Jones passed the one touchdown and ran for another as the Colts boosted their record to four and one.
- 34:17A game ahead of New England in the AFC Eastern Division.
- 34:23Quarterback Ken Stable completed 20 of 26 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns.
- 34:30As the Oakland Raiders took a 27 to 17 victory over San Diego.
- 34:34The win moved the Raiders in its all possession of first place in the AFC West at four and one.
- 34:40Their chargers are three and two.
- 34:42Linebacker Jim Murlow ran a pass interception back 83 yards for one touchdown.
- 34:47And quarterback Bobby Scott accounted for two others as New Orleans blanks in the state's prone Atlanta Falcons 30 to nothing.
- 34:58Denny Leonard has two runs to work with now as he takes his warm up and is ready to face the Yankees in the second inning.
- 35:05He'll be going against Carlos May, Greg Meadows and Oscar Gamble.
- 35:10The water falls up between innings as they do here and of course at night with lights behind it making a very picturesque scene at beautiful Royal Stadium.
- 35:20Harry S. Truman complex here in Kansas City.
- 35:24On that this game being beamed all around the world by American forces radio so we should send our greetings to all the folks and tell them that we'll be bringing them a little touch of home wherever they might be.
- 35:36I hope so, yeah. Maybe the guys and girls who are from the heart of America country will be coming back here soon.
- 35:45And thankfully they'll be coming back without having to go through a war to do it.
- 35:51Carlos May leading off a designated hitter with a right-hander going for Kansas City.
- 35:56May replaces Pennella as a D8.
- 36:00Carlos May batted 259 on the year with three homers and 43 runs batted in.
- 36:06Came over to the Yankees for the White Sox in the deal that sent Ken Brett to Chicago.
- 36:13Black calls the left-handed batter.
- 36:16May as many know had a serious accident when he was in the Marine Corps doing Marine Reserve duty several years ago.
- 36:24A mortar went off and blew part of his thumb off.
- 36:27Winked and missed it.
- 36:29Nothing in two and it changed his whole batting style. When he came up with the White Sox he was a good young hitter.
- 36:35He's a good hitter now but he has to choke up on the bat.
- 36:38The thing that has bothered him most about that accident was the throwing to get used to that.
- 36:43The Yankees have been using him cheaply as a designated hitter.
- 36:47Takes the low outside pitch, one ball, two strikes.
- 36:52May's brother, Lee May of Baltimore.
- 36:59The one-two delivery to him.
- 37:01Rounded foul passed first.
- 37:05330 feet down each line here at Royal Stadium.
- 37:08385 farther out in left and right. 410 towards the deep right center and left center power alleys and center field.
- 37:17The 12-foot high wall going around from foul pole to foul pole.
- 37:21The bullpens are at right and center there.
- 37:24That wall about the same, that screen the same height.
- 37:27There's a drive to left field. It could be trouble near the wall. It is curving. It is fair ball.
- 37:32Bouncing on one half against the wall.
- 37:34The
- 37:35Wolfer's fires into Pottec, a double for Carlos May leading off the second for New York.
- 37:40He can wheel that bat.
- 37:43May doubles deep in the left field corner.
- 37:48As we've told you before and if you've been to Royal Stadium and know about it,
- 37:53you give them the double down the left field line.
- 37:55You don't try to go in after it because it eludes you by maybe a triple or inside the part homer.
- 38:02That's the second hit off winner.
- 38:05Yankees in business with May at second base and the batter, Greg Nettles, third baseman hit list in four trips yesterday.
- 38:1332 homers on the year, the American League home run champion.
- 38:1793 runs batted in. Fast ball outside.
- 38:22254 hitter on the year but he's had the power and the production for the Yankees.
- 38:29An excellent mistake hitter. You make a mistake on a breaking ball and he'll kill you.
- 38:34Left handed batter.
- 38:35Homes the bat right down at the end.
- 38:39And the pitch.
- 38:40Check swing fouled off.
- 38:43Breaking pitch by Leonard that time. He rode the slider in on him.
- 38:49The Royals lead 2-0 as the Yankees bat in the second inning in game two.
- 38:57Here is the set by Leonard to look back towards second base.
- 39:06And he throws high outside again. He is keeping it away from Nettles.
- 39:11The fast balls that are tailing away outside.
- 39:16That fast ball which we mentioned runs into right handers. This time is running away from the left hander Nettles.
- 39:23The temperature here at game time we are reminded was 69 degrees officially.
- 39:28Although some people earlier had said 75 but it's around 69, 70 and very pleasant really shirt sleeve weather here in October.
- 39:37Two balls, one strike to Greg Nettles.
- 39:45And here is the double play who is not a threat to do much except just do the best you can in running.
- 39:53Medium lead off the bag and this is an eyeball three. Three and one to Nettles.
- 39:58And now Leonard is getting a little mess again.
- 40:01A double play bailed him out of real trouble in the first inning when the first two Yankees got on.
- 40:10Big right hander leans in for the sign.
- 40:14And he walks in. High outside and that was the pattern all the way through on Nettles.
- 40:20Fast balls up and away.
- 40:22The second walk issued by Leonard.
- 40:26Right field at Oscar Gamble is the batter.
- 40:32Did not play in yesterday's game.
- 40:36Left handed hitter with a 232 season mark but with 17 home runs and 57 runs batted in.
- 40:43Generates a lot of power on the left side.
- 40:47He doesn't look as if he's a power hitter but he can pull them all and hurt you.
- 40:52Ball split off the left hander is up for the second time in the Royal Bullpen.
- 40:56And for the second inning in a row the Yankees have their first two batters on.
- 41:01But here's our May at second base and Nettles at first.
- 41:06Not much speed on the bases right now for New York.
- 41:10Double play depth for the infield and the pitch to Gamble is a strike call.
- 41:15After takes the strike.
- 41:18Gamble had maybe the world champion afro in sports last year before he came to the Yankees.
- 41:25And then when he came to the Yankees Mr. Steinbetter said cut it off.
- 41:30And when the boss tells you to do that I guess you do it.
- 41:33Cost out to $30 but he said that's fine.
- 41:37Easy way to lose five pounds, students often say.
- 41:40I was wondering how he kept the helmet on.
- 41:43Here's a one strike pitch to him. It's down low for a ball, one and one.
- 41:46Very personable fellow Gamble.
- 41:49And Mrs. Oscar Gamble, Juanita Gamble, will be singing the national anthem before game three in New York on Tuesday.
- 41:58Very pleasant singing voice.
- 42:03The one one pitch to Oscar, bouncing ball into left field for a hit.
- 42:07Charged by Wolford, they are sending May.
- 42:10Wolford throws the plate, cut off by Patek, it's two to one.
- 42:14So the Yankees are right back in it as Oscar Gamble punches a single through the shortstop hole to drive in Carlos May with a first Yankee run.
- 42:23And they're holding a second base with Nettles.
- 42:26We'll be here 10 seconds for base identification. This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 42:33This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 42:44Back at Royal Stadium in Kansas City, this is Ned Martin along with Ernie Harwell.
- 42:48And we are watching a different kind of ball game so far tonight from yesterday's opener with D.D. Kitching, all of those guys.
- 42:57Both teams coming out hitting.
- 43:00The score is Kansas City two, the Yankees one. Yankees with nobody out and runners at first and second.
- 43:06The hitter is Willie Randolph, second baseman, right handed batter.
- 43:10Ground ball to short, Patek touches second.
- 43:13And over the first double play. And over the third goes Gamble, but they get two out.
- 43:19Or a Nettles goes to third and Gamble is doubled up.
- 43:22Patek making the play unassisted, stepping on the bag to fourth Gamble and throwing the first against the fleet, Willie Randolph.
- 43:29Two tough men do double and they did it. And for a second time, a double play helped Leonard immeasurably.
- 43:36Two double plays turned by Kansas City.
- 43:39Nettles is at third base. He represents the tying run.
- 43:43And the batter is Fred Stanley. He went three before yesterday from his number nine spot.
- 43:48Yankee shortstop, right handed batter, swings and fouls just at strike one.
- 43:55Stanley is the kind of hitter that you may ease up on him.
- 43:58Maybe not meaning to, but you don't pay as much attention to him as the tougher hitters in the lineup.
- 44:03And all of a sudden there he is, singing base hits around.
- 44:08He did yesterday, played a fine game defensively too.
- 44:11Pitch is inside. One ball, one strike.
- 44:14Nettles at third, two out.
- 44:19Infield back deep now with two away.
- 44:22They do not play Stanley to full. In fact they play in the push.
- 44:26The center fielder, Cowans, over toward right center.
- 44:29Fouls off the end of the bat into the first base dugout.
- 44:32One ball, two strikes.
- 44:35The put-off still works in the Kansas City bullpen.
- 44:45Royals home uniform glistening white against the green of the carton turf here,
- 44:51which is kept in such excellent playing shape by George Tilmer and his fine ground crew.
- 44:59A ball and two strikes with two out.
- 45:02From the stretch, Leonard backs off the mound.
- 45:07Nettles coming down the line at third, not a long way.
- 45:14Here's the set and the pitch.
- 45:17Little pumper towards the right side of the infield taken by White in the air for the final out.
- 45:22A handle rooper to second baseman Frank White to end the inning.
- 45:26One Yankee run. They had a pair of hits and they leave one.
- 45:30And after one and a half innings in the middle of the second inning in the Kansas City Royals 2, the New York Yankees won.
- 45:37Continuing with National Football League details, quarterback Mike Livingston tossed a 36-yard scoring pass to Larry Brunson in the final second
- 45:45to give Kansas City a 33-30 victory over the Redskins.
- 45:49The Chiefs' first victory in five outings, the Redskins have now lost two straights after winning the first three.

- 46:59Don Krocok kicked four field goals and Cleo Miller plunged for a touchdown as the Cleveland Browns
- 47:05beat the Swamping Pittsburgh Steelers 18 to 16The Steelers are now in the basement of the AFC
- 47:11Central with a one and four recordThe Browns are two and three.
- 47:14The bottom of the second is approaching with the Royals leading the Yankees two to one.
- 47:23The Cincinnati Reds took their second in a row from the Philadelphia Thills at Philadelphia
- 47:28on a kind of gloomy day today, certainly gloomy for the people in Philadelphia who had such high
- 47:33hopes for a good jump against the Reds, but they broke through Jim Lombardi's serve. Loney had a
- 47:39no hitter through five innings, but they came up with four runs of the six knocking him out and
- 47:44went on to beat him. Pat Zachary the winner, Lombardi the loser, who did see had the game
- 47:49of Homer for Philadelphia, but the Reds just did it as the Thills fell into some mistakes here and
- 47:55there. A controversial call and a line drive went off the glove of Richie Allen for two runs,
- 48:01a call that had never finally ever pushed, deciding it might be a base hit. Freddy Patek up,
- 48:05he takes a strike on the outside corner. A one charm shortstop for the Kansas City Royals, Pat
- 48:13Zachary. One for three yesterday, hit 241 on the year and he looks at a pitch outside, ball one.
- 48:22One ball, one strike. Freddy has learned to go to the opposite field, punch the ball around.
- 48:29He came up, he has some strength in the plate, but he's not the full type hitter. Fly ball,
- 48:36straight away center, back four and then in for it is Rivers. Mickey puts it away and Patek is out.
- 48:44One out of the Royals, second. Number 21, Buck Martinez, the catcher for the Royals,
- 48:50right-handed hitter. One over two yesterday, before being removed fourth-inch hitter.
- 49:00Muck is 228 on the season with five homers. Hit Figueroa on the mound, finally weathered a rough
- 49:08first inning, giving up two runs and three hits. Right-hander works, the fly ball into right field
- 49:16this time. Under it is Gamble. Oscar puts this one away. Martinez is out and there's two away
- 49:22very quickly in the Royals second inning. Leadoff man Jim Wolpert started the whole thing in the
- 49:31first inning with an infield hit to short and he scored the first Royal run. Two apps, nobody on.
- 49:48All one, thrown to Wolpert, right-handed batter.
- 49:52And the pitch by Figueroa, foul back to the screen.
- 50:03Andy Hasler, the left-hander, will go for the Royals on Tuesday night in New York.
- 50:118 15 Eastern Daylight Time, the game time there, 7 15 Central.
- 50:171-1 pitch, a strike call, flipped across the outside. Conner and Wolpert is down on the
- 50:25count, one ball two strikes. Doc Ellis will be Billy Martin's choice to go for the Yankees.
- 50:361-2 pitch, hit high, ball two, two and two.
- 50:40Big near capacity crowd again tonight in Royal Stadium. Here's a 2-2 offering, ground ball,
- 50:51right side, taken the first base by Shambles, plays it alone and the Royals are out 1-2-3.
- 50:56An easy inning for Figueroa now, nothing is caught and after two innings of play it's the
- 51:01Royals two and the Yankees one. Okay let's continue with a look at details of games in
- 51:11The National Football League. Chuck Foreman ran for two touchdowns and Fred Cox floated two field
- 51:17goals to help the Vikings to a 20-19 victory over ChicagoThe win gives Minnesota a one and a half
- 51:23game lead over Chicago in the NFC CentralThe Vikings took a 17-0 halftime lead but the Bears
- 51:30bounced back after the intermissionThe Green Bay Packers down 20-7 in the third quarter rallied
- 51:38behind the passing of Lynn Dickey and defeated the expansion Seattle Seahawks 27-20. Dickey
- 51:44threw a 66-yard scoring pass to Steve Odom late in the third quarter then led the Packers to their
- 51:50winning score midway through the fourth quarter on the Barty Smith six-yard scoring run.
- 51:55Craig Wendry threw three touchdown passes as Detroit surprised New England 30-10 to give Tommy
- 52:01Hutch brought the victory in his first game as interim coach. Here we go into the third inning
- 52:08at Royal StadiumThe Kansas City Royals leading the Yankees two to one. Two rather interesting
- 52:14innings offensively and Dennis Leonard trying to settle down in the third after two wobbly innings
- 52:21during which time he has given up three hits two walks and a run but still has a two-one lead.
- 52:27The Big Oars settled down nicely in the bottom of the second after having a rough first inning.
- 52:34Leonard finishing his one up with Chuck Martinez. Last year his first full season rally in the
- 52:43American League he won 16 and lost 7. He's always had a pretty good strikeout to walk ratio. This
- 52:52past year in 1976 he struck out 148 while walking 70 better than a two to one ratio.
- 52:59Dickey got the same as a two to one ratio.
- 53:03Here's Mickey Rivers led the first inning with a walk got as far as third base and died there.
- 53:1643 still in bases was good for seventh in the American League. Ground ball to second Frank
- 53:21White as it throws him out one away. So they get Rivers off the base.
- 53:28Left fielder Roy White.
- 53:32Roy White comes up and he drilled a single into left field in the first.
- 53:39But you're batting left tonight against Leonard.
- 53:44George Brett at third with White up there playing wide of the bag. He is even with a bag that's
- 53:50about a third of the way down towards second base. It's a little bit low ball one.
- 53:55He's playing on that inside line which is about the about tantamount to being the edge of the
- 54:01infield grass on a normal grass diamond. Fly ball right center coming on hard as Cowans and he lets
- 54:08it drop. Here comes a White in the second baseThe throw is not in time. He has a hustle double.
- 54:16Now that's a target and third double there Ned. One of those little Texas Lakers did drop in and
- 54:21Cowans had to play it rather carefully because it can bounce over your head and go for inside the
- 54:26park home run. But White took advantage of the fact that it was dropping in between the infielder and
- 54:32The outfielder and he got too off it. He had the play right in front of him. He just went on there.
- 54:38It was a throw by Cowans who has a good throwing arm was a little bit too lateThe ball almost
- 54:44did get over his head on the bounce. He had to reach high for it and that's when White
- 54:47put it into high and went into second base. So it's a pop fly double to center. Cowans had a long
- 54:54way to come for that one. There's one outThe tying run at second base for New York and Thurman
- 54:58Munson is up. Yankees have four hits. Off Leonard. They are hitting the Royals 4-3.
- 55:09White who can run is off second. There's a foul back by Munson. Thurman got it into a six-four
- 55:15three double play in the first inning. That was a lazy cut by him that time. He's usually a lot more
- 55:21aggressive than that. It might have been the slider. Nothing in one. Two Thurman.
- 55:30Yankees running at Leonard for the third straight inning.
- 55:38Leonard checks off second base. Comes in with his pitch and a fly ball maybe double down into
- 55:42right field. It's going to drop in thereThe ball is picked up by Pochette. Tying run scores.
- 55:48It's two to two. A double for Munson and that was not hard hit. He lifted it off the end of the bat
- 55:54down the right field line. Pochette had to run for it. He could have no chance to try to shoe spring
- 55:59it. A little pop fly double down the right field line for Munson. Drives in the tying run.
- 56:04It's all new here. Two to two. Two balls that were really not ripped. This one hit late at the end down the right field line.
- 56:17And for the third time in as many innings, Paul Splittorff gets up the throw out in right field.
- 56:23Just starting forwarding his mail out there pretty soon I think. Yeah he's going to pitch a whole ball game
- 56:28without coming in if this keeps up. RBI double for Munson. White scoring the tying run his side up two two. Here's Chris Shambliss.
- 56:40Pitch to him is up high ball one. Shambliss rounded to second base in the first inning.
- 56:47So with all the cheering and the shouting it's still two two now as the Yankees have run right back.
- 56:52So they've been doing all year. One O pitch. Shambliss checks off and takes it low outside. Ball two.
- 56:59Leonard has been the most erratic in the early innings. You cannot exactly fault him for these two doubles though.
- 57:07Can't fault anybody. They just lit in the right place.
- 57:13Infield over shifted on Shambliss. They abort the swing but not enough and he goes through with it for strike one.
- 57:21Two balls one strike. Kotek is way over almost directly behind second.
- 57:27White is playing what you'd be considering almost a short field in softball. He's very deep at second base behind that white line.
- 57:37And Mayberry is deep and three steps in from the line at first.
- 57:43There's a ball driven pass between Mayberry and White and this will score MunsonThe fill comes in the second base. It's three to two New York.
- 57:51Chris Shambliss singles sharply on the ground in the hole between White and Mayberry.
- 57:57And three straight hits have given the Yankees the lead. They lead three to two.
- 58:03And Whitey Herzog himself is coming out. That may be all for Leonard.
- 58:08An RBI single for ShamblissThe Royals who jumped off with a two nothing lead.
- 58:14Yep, Mr. Leonard is leaving. He has not been effective.
- 58:20Then Paul Splinoff, the left-hander, will be brought in. Leonard goes two and one third innings.
- 58:27During that time giving up six hits and three runs. He's responsible for a baserunner.
- 58:36He walked two and did not strike out anyone. And he's leaving now in favor of Paul Splinoff who's coming in on the card.
- 58:44Right now, a brief news.
- 58:48Okay, more from the National Football League. Greg Landry threw three touchdown passes as the Detroit Lions surprised New England 30 to 10.
- 58:58As we mentioned earlier to give Tommy Hutzpeth a victory in his first game as interim coach.
- 59:02Landry had rookie tight end Dave Hill on two scoring tosses. A 21 yarder in the first quarter and a three yard pass with just over eight minutes to play.
- 59:11Charlie Sanders also got a five yard touchdown strike with time running out in the first half.
- 59:18Ken Anderson hit 10 or 15 for 98 yards and one touchdown to pay Cincinnati to a 21 nothing victory over the windless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 59:26Anderson found tight end Bob Trumpy with a 10 yard scoring toss with less than six minutes left in the opening period.
- 59:33And fullback Ruby Clark added six more on a three yard touchdown run.
- 59:38The unbeaten Dallas Cowboys spoiled the debut of the New York Giants in their new stadium by defeating the Giants 24 to 14.
- 59:46A capacity crowd of more than 76,000 watched that contest.
- 59:54New pitcher for the Royals with the score Yankees three, Kansas City two. Here in the third inning is Paul Splinoff.
- 1:00:02This year he won 11 in last game.
- 1:00:11He had 26 appearances and 23 starts.
- 1:00:17He worked both in relief and as a starting pitcher.
- 1:00:23He's a winningest pitcher in the history of the Royal Ballclub and he was off to a very fine season before he dealt with a finger injury and forced him out of action from mid season until the final week of the 76 campaign.
- 1:00:37And he's about ready to go to work so let's go back to that market.
- 1:00:40All right Ernie here we go and Splinoff making a comeback as it were in the late stages of the season and now here in the playoffs getting a left arm in against the New York Yankees.
- 1:00:53Carlos May is the batter. He doubled his first time up. Curve ball over but low ball one.
- 1:01:02May doubles the left and scores the first Yankee run in the second inning.
- 1:01:12Mighty Ernie's got more people out there and the Bulls had a right-hander now. There's a called strike.
- 1:01:17Doug Byrd who was throwing early yesterday afternoon is now moving in there and Mighty's got everybody warming now.
- 1:01:27He's going to run out of tomorrow pretty soon in these things. May hits the ground ball on the right side just over the lunge of Mayberry and out of the reach of White.
- 1:01:35A little ground ball single and had eyes and down to second base goes Shambler.
- 1:01:40Boy, the hits this inning have been anything but pure doubles and singles. Two pop fly doubles, a ground ball single to right and this one really had eyes as it just took a high hop.
- 1:01:52A Tarzan curve hop over Mayberry's glove out of the reach of White who was lurching off to his left.
- 1:01:57So May singles these two for two. Shambler is at second base. Runners at first and second. Still only one out and the Royals have had four straight hits.
- 1:02:07Seven already for them in the game. Split R facing another left-handed hitter, Greg Nettles. He drew a walk his first time up.
- 1:02:15Foul back strike one. Marty Potec gave Shambler a good fake there and he split in. He might have made third base otherwise.
- 1:02:28Well, we'll see what happens now with the runners at first and second. This is a situation where the Royals want the ground ball at somebody to get out of this thing with a double play.
- 1:02:38Stitches inside moving in. One ball, one strike to Nettles.
- 1:02:47Very quiet at Royals Stadium after the exuberance of a couple of innings ago.
- 1:02:56There's a curve ball. It fails to break. It's inside. Ball two, two and one.
- 1:03:02Overshifted again in the infield on Nettles with Potec shading second. White is not as deep as he was earlier on Shambler.
- 1:03:13He's trying to shorten up a little bit and try to get the double play ball. They've had two of them already.
- 1:03:21Good is. High fly ball to left center. Walford over. Over also is the center fielder Cowan who has a better arm. He makes the catch and the players, the runners will play it halfway in return.
- 1:03:35Nettles flies to center fielder Al Cowan. Two outs now for the Yankees. And here's Oscar Gamble who lined a single to left field to drive in a run in the second.
- 1:03:50Yankees leading 3-2. They fill up with one run in the second and two here in the third. Royals jumped early with two runs in the first.
- 1:04:04Terry's still looking for his first home run. There it is. Curve ball, fly ball, hits deep towards center but Cowan's is back. He's got it. Well hit by Gamble. That was probably the best hit for all the innings but he's out.
- 1:04:20And the Yankees come up with two runs in the third. They had four hits in consecutive if they were. They left two men on base. And in the middle of the third inning the score is the Yankees three and the Royals two.
- 1:04:33The Houston Oilers defense staffed by two first time starters completely shut off Denver's high scoring offense to record a 17-3 victory over the Broncos.
- 1:04:43Fred Willis' 14-yard touchdown run was all Houston needed to maintain its share of the AFC Center Division League with Cincinnati with a 4-1 record.
- 1:04:52The loss was Denver's first in four games and dropped the Broncos from the lead in the AFCThe Broncos scored their only points late in the first quarter as Jim Turner kicked a 31-yard field goal.
- 1:05:04So let's take a look then very quickly and see how things went. Baltimore 28, Miami 14, the Chet 17, Buffalo 14, Dallas 24, the Giants 14, Kansas City 33, the Redskins 30, Cleveland 18, Pittsburgh 16, Cincinnati 21, Tampa Bay Zip, Detroit 30, New England 10, Minnesota 20, the Bears 19, Houston 17, Denver 3, New Orleans 30, Atlanta nothing, Green Bay 27, Seattle 20.
- 1:05:33St. Louis 33, the Philadelphia Eagles 14, and the Oakland Raiders 27, San Diego 17. Sunday in the NFL. Monday San Francisco at Los Angeles.
- 1:05:45The bet for inning number three for the Loyals. They are trailing by a run. Ed Figueroa who has not been sharp except in the second inning. He's had a sliding order there.
- 1:06:03After a first inning we saw him give up three hits and a walk. A throwing error by Munson didn't help it.
- 1:06:14First up will be Al Callens. Single to right field in the first inning. He's had a run. He's had a field error.
- 1:06:22He's had a second base and went to third on the throwing error by Munson. Ed Figueroa ready with a sign from Servan Munson. Callens takes a breaking pitch on the inside corner for a call strike.
- 1:06:44Chris Shambles at first base.
- 1:06:47Willie Randolph at second.
- 1:06:49Fred Stanley at short and Greg Nettles at third.
- 1:06:52Foul ball off Cowens' back.
- 1:06:55And the count is 0-2.
- 1:06:56The left fielder is Roy White,
- 1:06:58The center fielder, Nicky Rivers,
- 1:07:00and the right fielder, Oscar Gamble.
- 1:07:04Yankees have three runs and seven hits.
- 1:07:06They made an error and the Royals two runs and three hits.
- 1:07:09Bigarola, deals, misses outside.
- 1:07:19A ball and two strikes.
- 1:07:23The Royals were running in the first inning.
- 1:07:27The Yankees, they ran, only their running was in extending
- 1:07:30what looked to be singles into doubles.
- 1:07:32One ball, two strikes.
- 1:07:41There's a checked swing by Cowens on a breaking ball.
- 1:07:45Two and two.
- 1:07:51Mitch moved outside the strike zone.
- 1:07:52The count's two and two to Al Cowens.
- 1:07:55Infield back on the left side.
- 1:07:57Randolph, he's at second base.
- 1:07:58Cowens takes ball three outside, three and two.
- 1:08:09Reds beat the Phillies today, six to two.
- 1:08:11They're second in a row.
- 1:08:12They need just one more.
- 1:08:14Out of the next three games to be played,
- 1:08:18at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:08:22Three-two pitch.
- 1:08:23Bouncing ball towards the middle.
- 1:08:25Stanley has it back of the bag.
- 1:08:27A second, he throws him out.
- 1:08:28Nice play by Fred Stanley going to his left.
- 1:08:30Ball was not sharply enough to get through.
- 1:08:32George Red.
- 1:08:34Cowens is out, shorts the first, and George Red is up.
- 1:08:39He goes home a run with a sacrifice fly
- 1:08:42to left in the first inning.
- 1:08:46Three to five on the series.
- 1:08:53Had 215 hits this season.
- 1:08:56In regular season play, a Kansas City Royal record,
- 1:09:00team record, and also 14 triples.
- 1:09:03Strike calls.
- 1:09:07He'll use all parts of the field,
- 1:09:08mainly from right center toward left center.
- 1:09:12And he can line the ball directly
- 1:09:13to the opposite field down the line.
- 1:09:16In that way, Figueroa turns one over
- 1:09:19and it misses low and outside ball one.
- 1:09:21Figueroa works in kind of a no wind up motion.
- 1:09:24Only his big, high leg kick or anything,
- 1:09:27just throws the ground ball to second.
- 1:09:29Picked up there by Randolph going to his left.
- 1:09:32He throws Fred out.
- 1:09:33Two up and two down.
- 1:09:37Usually Figueroa will get a lot of the ground balls
- 1:09:39because he can throw the ball down near the knees.
- 1:09:42John Mayberry, a fourth.
- 1:09:45John Mayberry fouled out to third baseman Greg Nettles
- 1:09:48just for his time off.
- 1:09:49And they've got the Mayberry shift again.
- 1:09:52He says that that shift did not exactly intimidate him,
- 1:09:56but it made him get their way this year.
- 1:09:59The ball high toward left down the line
- 1:10:01is going to be maybe out of play.
- 1:10:03Let's see.
- 1:10:04A great grab by Stanley or Nettles.
- 1:10:07He's got it.
- 1:10:08Greg Nettles makes a second catch in foul ground
- 1:10:11in the shadow of the railing over there
- 1:10:14on a ball that almost got away from him.
- 1:10:16He was pulled way over toward third.
- 1:10:18Way over toward shortstop from his normal third base spot.
- 1:10:22Fine play by Greg Nettles.
- 1:10:23Mayberry is out.
- 1:10:25The second time he has fouled to third.
- 1:10:27A one, two, three inning again for Figueroa.
- 1:10:29He's retired seven in a row.
- 1:10:31At the end of the third inning,
- 1:10:32The score Yankees three, Royals two.
- 1:10:35The Cincinnati Reds defeated Philadelphia six, two
- 1:10:38to move within one victory
- 1:10:40of clinching the second straight
- 1:10:41national league championship.
- 1:10:43The Reds held hitmills by Jim Lomborg
- 1:10:46through five innings,
- 1:10:47scored four runs in the sixth
- 1:10:49with the aid of a two runner
- 1:10:50charged to first baseman, Dick Allen.
- 1:10:54The victory gave the Reds a two nothing lead
- 1:10:56in their best of five series
- 1:10:57and with one more victory needed for a world series birth.
- 1:11:00The series now moves to Cincinnati beginning Tuesday.
- 1:11:04Lomborg had a two nothing lead
- 1:11:06but walked Dave Concepcion to open the sixth.
- 1:11:08Concepcion took second on an infield out
- 1:11:11and then scored on P. Rose's single,
- 1:11:13Cincinnati's first hit and run of the game.
- 1:11:16Ken Griffey followed with a single.
- 1:11:18Reliever Gene Garber intentionally walked Joe Morgan
- 1:11:21filling the bases before Tony Perez
- 1:11:23rifled a shot toward first.
- 1:11:25Allen flying in backhanded the ball
- 1:11:27but it bounced off his glove into short right
- 1:11:30and two runs scored to put the Reds in front three to two.
- 1:11:33Pat Zachary got the win.
- 1:11:35Second baseman Willie Randolph.
- 1:11:37Willie Randolph will be first up
- 1:11:38for the Yankees in the fourth inning.
- 1:11:41Yankees leading three to two.
- 1:11:43That was a very good effort
- 1:11:45by Greg Nettles on that foul ball.
- 1:11:47He never gave up on it.
- 1:11:48It didn't look as though he'd get to it in time.
- 1:11:51He was right by the railing almost into a stand
- 1:11:53and he just stuck out the glove and there it was
- 1:11:55and fell down and held onto the baseball.
- 1:11:58One of the good, one of the best fielding plays
- 1:12:01of this short series so far.
- 1:12:06There haven't been any screamers as yet.
- 1:12:09Randolph grounded into a double play his first time
- 1:12:12and takes ball one for Wallace Widdorf.
- 1:12:19Widdorf goes to work.
- 1:12:21He has the high kick.
- 1:12:22He gets the strike on the outside corner.
- 1:12:30Left-hander, winds and curves Randolph down low
- 1:12:33and inside ball two, two and one.
- 1:12:35And the appearance of a waxing moon I believe coming up.
- 1:12:42Over the horizon, gazing at it.
- 1:12:46Fly ball deep left field.
- 1:12:47Walford back.
- 1:12:48He has room.
- 1:12:50He's at the edge of the warning signs and he's got it.
- 1:12:52375 feet away.
- 1:12:55Randolph flies fairly deep to Jim Walford in left field.
- 1:12:59That ball hit well but it's just not very much
- 1:13:01as Walford's especially at night.
- 1:13:04That's what the players have complained about on all teams.
- 1:13:12Here's Fred Stanley.
- 1:13:14Widdorf pitches inside a ball.
- 1:13:17Stanley popped up the second in the second inning.
- 1:13:19The Yankees are leading here three-two.
- 1:13:22Out hitting the Royals seven to three.
- 1:13:24Widdorf works.
- 1:13:25Pass ball on the outside slice of the plate
- 1:13:27right on the black fur called strike.
- 1:13:29One and one.
- 1:13:30Widdorf came on to relieve starter Dennis Leonard.
- 1:13:33Gave up a hit and then gets two out.
- 1:13:35Little pop up to the right side in shallow right
- 1:13:37but back forward and they let it get behind him.
- 1:13:40He drain him.
- 1:13:41A base hit.
- 1:13:41A throw to second base.
- 1:13:42Not in time.
- 1:13:43It gets behind Patek.
- 1:13:44Backed up there.
- 1:13:46And it's another Yankee pop fly that falls in.
- 1:13:49As Frank White and Tom Polquette
- 1:13:52stop short of each other and allow the ball
- 1:13:54to hit in there.
- 1:13:55It took a high hop over Polquette's head
- 1:13:57and down the second on the gif went Stanley.
- 1:14:01Another rather incredible hit by the New York Yankees
- 1:14:05tonight.
- 1:14:06Badly played by Frank White and Tom Polquette.
- 1:14:09One or the other.
- 1:14:10Nobody yelled or something.
- 1:14:12White went back after.
- 1:14:13It was just a normal fly ball and could have been handled.
- 1:14:17But it dropped in between them.
- 1:14:19And it's a gif double to Fred Stanley.
- 1:14:23I'd have to guess then that it was Polquette's ball.
- 1:14:26And then he shot away.
- 1:14:27White's probably calling him off.
- 1:14:29Funny, it's Polquette's call and his ball, you're right.
- 1:14:32But he has the bead on it.
- 1:14:35White was very aggressive in going back after.
- 1:14:38But they just let it drop.
- 1:14:40No error charged.
- 1:14:41The curve ball is outside the river.
- 1:14:43It's ball one.
- 1:14:44Boy, the three doubles with the Royals,
- 1:14:47three of the four doubles with the Royals
- 1:14:48have been beauty.
- 1:14:51The only really legitimate one was Carlos May's
- 1:14:53shot to left feet.
- 1:14:54In the second.
- 1:14:57But the Yankees, they only get the breaks.
- 1:15:01So they make them and they also take advantage of them.
- 1:15:04Which is why they win.
- 1:15:05There is a pitch on the outside corner.
- 1:15:08But nope, it's all the ball.
- 1:15:12Rivers kind of poked the bat at it
- 1:15:15as if he were going to punch.
- 1:15:17They checked on him and you feel with third base umpire
- 1:15:19Art Frank at the behest of Martinez.
- 1:15:22But he said, nope, it's ball two.
- 1:15:25So the count is two and nothing to Rivers,
- 1:15:27who has walked and granted out.
- 1:15:30Yankees with another mild threat here.
- 1:15:32The pitch by Split are about side.
- 1:15:34Ball three.
- 1:15:36Three and nothing to Mickey Rivers.
- 1:15:38One out in this inning.
- 1:15:42And that out was a legitimately hard hit ball.
- 1:15:45Long fly ball.
- 1:15:46The rest by Willie Randolph.
- 1:15:47Eight hits now for New York.
- 1:15:50Here it is.
- 1:15:52Strike called at the letter.
- 1:15:54Three balls, one strike.
- 1:16:04Stanley at second went away.
- 1:16:06Rivers, the batter with a three one count.
- 1:16:08He tries to punch and fouls it off.
- 1:16:10Tries to drop it down the third baseline.
- 1:16:14So now it's three and two to make it.
- 1:16:15Roy White on deck.
- 1:16:18He's perfect on the night.
- 1:16:26Stanley does not take a hefty lead off second.
- 1:16:30Now he increases it.
- 1:16:32Little fly ball, center field.
- 1:16:34But Cowan is under this one.
- 1:16:35He one hands it.
- 1:16:37And Stanley gets back to second base.
- 1:16:40Rivers flies to center.
- 1:16:41They are two away.
- 1:16:42The left fielder, Roy White.
- 1:16:46And here is Roy White up.
- 1:16:48He single to left in the first and doubled.
- 1:16:50Our top fly double to center in the third.
- 1:16:52It's a long run by Cowan.
- 1:16:54The ball fell in front of him.
- 1:16:58So the actives of the pad run at second base.
- 1:17:00Leading in the game already.
- 1:17:02Three to two.
- 1:17:03Have two outs.
- 1:17:04And White up.
- 1:17:04White turning around now to bat right handed against foul ball
- 1:17:08called split arc.
- 1:17:10Curve hangs outside.
- 1:17:11Ball one.
- 1:17:13White left handed against Leonard.
- 1:17:15It was perfect with the finger run double.
- 1:17:19He's a better left handed batter than White.
- 1:17:27And the ball is in the air.
- 1:17:29And the ball is in the air.
- 1:17:31But he did damage as a right hander yesterday.
- 1:17:38Doubling to left field and driving home two runs.
- 1:17:41The fastball tails outside.
- 1:17:46The left handed hitter this year, Roy,
- 1:17:50hits 320 as a right hander.
- 1:17:53248.
- 1:17:54His composite average is 286.
- 1:17:59Two and nothing they got to Roy White.
- 1:18:02Here it is.
- 1:18:03This is a breaking ball.
- 1:18:04It doesn't make it.
- 1:18:05Ball three.
- 1:18:103 and 0 to White with Mr. Munson on deck.
- 1:18:17Yankees leading 3-2 if he just joins us here.
- 1:18:22Now the pitch.
- 1:18:233 and 0.
- 1:18:24They let the field by.
- 1:18:25Did not have the green light.
- 1:18:26He takes the fastball for a strike.
- 1:18:283 and 1.
- 1:18:32Split arc will throw the breaking pitch a lot.
- 1:18:34He has a good curveball.
- 1:18:37Won 19 games a couple of years ago.
- 1:18:44Drops to the belt.
- 1:18:47Throw loose and misses outside.
- 1:18:49Ball four.
- 1:18:51White gets on base for the third straight time.
- 1:18:55That's the first walk given up by split arc.
- 1:18:58And the third acquired by the Yankees
- 1:19:00against the pitching of the Royals.
- 1:19:04Thurman Munson has bounced into a double play
- 1:19:06and hit a pop fly double down along the right field line
- 1:19:09driving in a run.
- 1:19:10He's one for two.
- 1:19:12And he's two for seven on the series so far.
- 1:19:15Left handed action in the bullpen for the Royals.
- 1:19:21Steve Mingori there, ace from the left side.
- 1:19:26He has the slider and the good breaking stuff
- 1:19:28and keeps the ball down and can really
- 1:19:31be troubled on some left handed batters.
- 1:19:34I know that Carl Yosemstiel of Austin Red Sox
- 1:19:37has had trouble with him a lot in recent years.
- 1:19:43As a ground ball to shortstop taken by Patek.
- 1:19:46Flips to white.
- 1:19:46They've got the fourth for the final out.
- 1:19:49Munson forces white at second base.
- 1:19:52Patek to Frank White.
- 1:19:54No runs for the New York Yankees at the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:19:57They did get a hit and they leave one.
- 1:20:00They leave two as a matter of fact.
- 1:20:02And after four innings in the middle of the fourth inning
- 1:20:04was Gores Mill, the Yankees three and the Royals two.
- 1:20:09Taking a look at what happened in the National Football League
- 1:20:11in case you missed it earlier.
- 1:20:14The Baltimore Colts getting pinpoint passing
- 1:20:16from Burke Jones and stingy defense when it counted
- 1:20:20moved into first place in the AFC East

- 1:21:34Going to the bottom of the fourth inning,
- 1:21:35The Royals trail by a run.
- 1:21:40They have two runs of three hits.
- 1:21:41The Yankees have three runs, eight hits in one era.
- 1:21:44And Hal McCray will be first up against Ed Figueroa.
- 1:21:50The designated hitter, Hal McCray.
- 1:21:52McCray, the designated hitter,
- 1:21:53drew a walk in the first inning
- 1:21:57looking for his first series hit.
- 1:22:00McCray, Poquette, and White.
- 1:22:10Figueroa, right hand is his first pitch in
- 1:22:13and spilled foul off to the right side
- 1:22:15toward the mezzanine deck here.
- 1:22:16One strike.
- 1:22:24That field about straight away on McCray,
- 1:22:26although Mickey Rivers moves a step toward right center.
- 1:22:30They don't gap it anywhere.
- 1:22:31They bunch him up more toward center field.
- 1:22:35And they give him a lot of the left field line.
- 1:22:38McCray, Figueroa, throws and misses low and away.
- 1:22:45One ball, one strike.
- 1:22:51And the charge being founded at Royal Stadium.
- 1:22:55McCray bent over from the waste.
- 1:22:58Pitch two in, misses outside and low.
- 1:23:00Ball two, two and one.
- 1:23:10Two one catch here, Hal.
- 1:23:12Figueroa, throws, strike call,
- 1:23:15picks up the outside corner at the knees.
- 1:23:17Good pitch.
- 1:23:20Rivers now moves more over toward right center field.
- 1:23:25We're in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:23:26The Yankees leading the Royals three to two.
- 1:23:31And the pitch is waved at and missed
- 1:23:33and McCray is out of it.
- 1:23:37A slider by Figueroa gets Hal McCray swinging
- 1:23:40and that's the first strikeout for the Yankee right-hander.
- 1:23:45Tom Pocet.
- 1:23:48Singled in a run in the first inning,
- 1:23:50bouncing a ground ball into right field.
- 1:23:52Two two, two two two two two two two.
- 1:23:55One of the three Royals hits.
- 1:23:57They score their two runs in the first inning.
- 1:24:01Three hits on a walk, sacrifice fly.
- 1:24:05Strike call from Figueroa
- 1:24:06who is pitching machine-like right now.
- 1:24:11Yankees came back with a run in the second
- 1:24:12and went ahead with two runs in the third.
- 1:24:18The one strike delivery.
- 1:24:20Misses outside a fastball.
- 1:24:22One ball, one strike.
- 1:24:24Two two two two two two two two two two two two.
- 1:24:29Tom Pocet.
- 1:24:33Base is clear, one out.
- 1:24:37Foul ball out of play.
- 1:24:38Doctor, 15-22.
- 1:24:39And it's one ball, two strikes.
- 1:24:41Four and three.
- 1:24:41Service.
- 1:24:42Doctor.
- 1:24:4315-22, call your entering service.
- 1:24:45Teams go at it in New York City.
- 1:24:478.15 Eastern Daylight Time Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:24:53Andy Hasler for the Royals.
- 1:24:56Doc Ellis for the New York Yankees.
- 1:25:01A ball and two strikes to Pocet.
- 1:25:05Here it is.
- 1:25:06It's way up high.
- 1:25:07Ball two, two and two.
- 1:25:18Pocet bends decidedly.
- 1:25:20The real crouching type of hitter.
- 1:25:26Fouls just went off his hand back through the screen.
- 1:25:30Two and two.
- 1:25:30Big Oroa in search of what will be his 20th of the year,
- 1:25:38but of course it will not be considered
- 1:25:40in the regular season as a 20 game season for any 119.
- 1:25:49Now the two two offering.
- 1:25:51And he lines the short center field coming on rivers
- 1:25:54and he makes the grab on his knees.
- 1:25:56Mickey Rivers stumbles to the target's earth
- 1:25:58but holds onto the sinking line drive for out number two.
- 1:26:02Pocet hit the ball well, but Mickey Rivers is right there.
- 1:26:06Two up and down in the fourth and Frank White is up.
- 1:26:11Royals second baseman grounded the third in the first inning
- 1:26:13ending that frame after the two runs that scored.
- 1:26:17Right handed batter.
- 1:26:21Big Oroa just moving on and on.
- 1:26:24Like Tennyson's book.
- 1:26:26Here's the pitch and there's a swing and a foul
- 1:26:28at the plate.
- 1:26:31Nothing in one.
- 1:26:32Rivers pulls over more toward right center on White
- 1:26:36and he had to floor on the right handed batter.
- 1:26:44Big Oroa is getting tougher as he goes along
- 1:26:46and he throws high and tight.
- 1:26:49One ball, one strike.
- 1:26:54A huge message board and scoreboard in center field
- 1:26:57in the form of a home plate and a Kings crown.
- 1:26:59Here's a foul back our way.
- 1:27:01Hey, watch it, Ernie.
- 1:27:03Not quite.
- 1:27:05Hey, you have to pull a pretty major league foul ball
- 1:27:07to get it back up here, don't you, in this part?
- 1:27:08Sure do, we're way back.
- 1:27:12One ball, two strikes to White.
- 1:27:16And on the message board they have everything about the
- 1:27:18batter as he comes up his average with some career
- 1:27:21remarks about him.
- 1:27:22First of all, strike count.
- 1:27:24The line score, very informative and very clear.
- 1:27:28The pitch is outside and the count is two and two.
- 1:27:32And below that is the bank of grass and the surrounding
- 1:27:35at the waterfalls.
- 1:27:37Just some advertising signs and a bigger bank
- 1:27:40in left field.
- 1:27:42There's ball three outside, three and two.
- 1:27:46Flagpole is in left field by the visitors bullpen
- 1:27:51and the wind is blowing that flag now from first
- 1:27:55towards third, from the right field foul pole
- 1:27:57towards the left field foul pole.
- 1:27:58Towards left, where ball could be helped a little bit maybe.
- 1:28:03The banks continue past the parking lot over left field
- 1:28:06and up towards the expressway and other highway
- 1:28:09leading to St. Louis.
- 1:28:11Strike three call, White is out.
- 1:28:14And again, a big inning for Ed Figaro.
- 1:28:16He gets the Royals in order, he has now retired
- 1:28:19and in a row gets his second strikeout.
- 1:28:22Nothing across and at the end of the fourth inning
- 1:28:25it's the Yankees three, the Royals two.
- 1:28:28Donnie Allison easily won the 17th annual National 500
- 1:28:32stock car race at Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 1:28:35That was Allison's first grand national victory
- 1:28:37in five years.
- 1:28:38He roared under the checkered flag at Charlotte,
- 1:28:4112 seconds ahead of Cale Yarborough.
- 1:28:43Allison's brother, Bobby, pushed in front of Buddy Baker
- 1:28:47a few feet from the finish line to take third
- 1:28:49by less than a hood length.
- 1:28:51Benny Parsons was fifth, a full lap behind the winner.
- 1:28:54Allison averaged a bit over 141 miles an hour.
- 1:28:58At Watson's Glen, England's James Hunt
- 1:29:01captured the United States Grand Prix
- 1:29:04and the finished head of South Africa's Jody Schuchter
- 1:29:07and defending world driving champion, Mickey Lauda.
- 1:29:10The win cut Lauda's lead on the Formula One
- 1:29:12driving championship circuit to three points
- 1:29:15with only the Japanese Grand Prix
- 1:29:17remaining later this month.
- 1:29:19Pittsburgh Cedar quarterback, Terry Bradshaw,
- 1:29:22was injured and taken from the field on a stretcher
- 1:29:25in the fourth quarter of that Brown Cedars game.
- 1:29:27No report on the condition of his injury.
- 1:29:31The Yankees coming to bat in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:29:35They are leading the Kansas City Royals three to two,
- 1:29:37getting a run in the second inning and two in the third.
- 1:29:42In the second inning, they had a double from May,
- 1:29:44a walk to the nettles and a single by Gamble.
- 1:29:47They got two runs in the third inning.
- 1:29:48When with one out, White doubled the center,
- 1:29:51Munson doubled him home,
- 1:29:53Shambles swingled Munson home,
- 1:29:56and there were two runs there.
- 1:29:58The Royals got two runs in the first inning on three hits
- 1:30:01and a walk along with a sacrifice fly
- 1:30:03and a throwing error by Munson.
- 1:30:07Yankees try to make it two in a row
- 1:30:10to duplicate the ax put on by the Cincinnati Reds
- 1:30:14in the National League today as they beat Philadelphia six
- 1:30:16to two.
- 1:30:17Chris Shambles up a curve is knocked over by Paul Squidor
- 1:30:20for a ball one.
- 1:30:22It's over the plate but low.
- 1:30:26The one-oh delivery.
- 1:30:29Low enough, one-two.
- 1:30:34Shambles, the left-handed batter,
- 1:30:36but they do not blame the pull.
- 1:30:40Strike calls, especially with the left-hander going
- 1:30:42against him, they have the right fielder,
- 1:30:44Fokette way over in the right center field.
- 1:30:47Collins is five, six steps toward left center.
- 1:30:50They punch up left center field, the gap there.
- 1:30:53Ground foul to the left.
- 1:30:56Two balls, two strikes to Chris Shambles
- 1:31:00who hit one of the crushing blows of many
- 1:31:02that put the defending champions of the American League,
- 1:31:06The Reds, knocked out of business this year.
- 1:31:08Shambles did a home run in the ninth inning,
- 1:31:11a game-winning home run against the Red Sox in July
- 1:31:13at Yankee Stadium that about did it.
- 1:31:15Ground ball the first, picked up by Mayberry
- 1:31:18and he steps on the bag alone to beat Shambles.
- 1:31:24Shambles grounds out to John Mayberry
- 1:31:26and Mayberry is up.
- 1:31:29Collins is perfect on the night.
- 1:31:31He doubles to left and scored and he singled to right.
- 1:31:33Two for two in this series.
- 1:31:53And May is up.
- 1:31:55Collins is perfect on the night.
- 1:31:57He doubles to left and scored and he singled to right.
- 1:31:59Two for two in this series.
- 1:32:05To the eighth tonight.
- 1:32:09Billy Martin, a head-by-run,
- 1:32:11still leaving his left-handed platoon in there
- 1:32:13with Paul Swidorf, foul-pointed on relief
- 1:32:16of the right-hander starter, Dennis Leonard.
- 1:32:18Pitch is low, ball one.
- 1:32:20Fast ball high, ball two.
- 1:32:23May was acquired in the months of May by the Yankees.
- 1:32:27As the Yankee hit 279, he wasn't doing much
- 1:32:30for the White Sox, they had not been using him.
- 1:32:33Frank Collins steps nicely across the outside corner
- 1:32:37by Paul Swidorf.
- 1:32:39Two and one.
- 1:32:40And the Yankees are up.
- 1:32:42They're up.
- 1:32:43They're up.
- 1:32:44They're up.
- 1:32:45They're up.
- 1:32:46They're up.
- 1:32:47Two and one.
- 1:32:50Yankees three, Royals two, top of inning number five.
- 1:32:54Blank and a miss, strike two.
- 1:32:57Big sweep by May.
- 1:33:00Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:33:05Carlos came to the Yankees a bit overweight.
- 1:33:07He is a husky individual anyway, kind of hefty,
- 1:33:10but he needed to take off about 10 pounds, and he did.
- 1:33:14The inactivity over in Chicago has put them on,
- 1:33:19and he worked hard to get into fighting them again.
- 1:33:24Count two and two on it.
- 1:33:26Swidorf kicks and throws, and he misses low outside, ball three.
- 1:33:31I believe Martinez thought they should have had that call.
- 1:33:35Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:33:37One out.
- 1:33:38Yankees leading three-two as they bat in the fifth.
- 1:33:42Here it is.
- 1:33:43Foul out of the glove of Martinez, three and two.
- 1:33:52Dennis Leonard started for the Royals
- 1:33:55and left under fire in the third inning.
- 1:33:58Bigger row after a rocky first inning has been letter perfect.
- 1:34:04They're firing 10 batters in a row.
- 1:34:07Three-two pitch.
- 1:34:08Strike three, swinging.
- 1:34:10Mays out, they're two away.
- 1:34:14First strikeout for Swidorf and for Kansas City, Michigan.
- 1:34:23Now here's Nettles.
- 1:34:25Greg is the walk and fly out.
- 1:34:28Over one.
- 1:34:33They do play him to full.
- 1:34:36Fast ball outside to end ball one.
- 1:34:38They do not overshift on him as they did with the right-hander Leonard in there,
- 1:34:42but they do still move him around a bit.
- 1:34:45Potec shading second base.
- 1:34:47It's low to Nettles, ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:34:54Greg is an uppercut kind of swinger.
- 1:34:58Thirty-two home runs this year.
- 1:35:01A wave on the breaking pitch, and the count is two and one.
- 1:35:10Blast Yankee to win an American League home run title to a fellow named Maris in 1961.
- 1:35:17Line drive, right field.
- 1:35:19They sit, dropped in there, rolling toward the wall,
- 1:35:22being played carefully out there by Phouquet,
- 1:35:24and an easy stand-up double for Greg Nettles.
- 1:35:28There was a real double.
- 1:35:30A shot down the right field line.
- 1:35:32Two-out double by Nettles.
- 1:35:34For the ninth Yankee hit.
- 1:35:36That's the third off Splitarm.
- 1:35:40The Yankees with a runner in scoring position in two-outs, and Oscar Gamble up.
- 1:35:46Singled home a run, his first dial-up, in the second inning, and then flat out in the third.
- 1:35:52Yankees leading by a run, trying to get another one.
- 1:36:02Nettles moves off the bag at second.
- 1:36:04Potek is tucked in behind him, deep, of course, shading second base.
- 1:36:08Gamble, a pull hit it up there.
- 1:36:10There's a foul back.
- 1:36:12Pitchers will try to work Gamble outside and make him go to left.
- 1:36:16He likes the ball on the inner half of the plate, and he is definitely a pull type hitter.
- 1:36:22They'll throw him away most of the time.
- 1:36:29One strike to it.
- 1:36:31Here's Splitarm's pitch.
- 1:36:33Outside, a fast ball, one ball, one strike.
- 1:36:36Black, white, the second baseman, way back, past that outside line.
- 1:36:47Pitch on an ordinary diamond might signify the skinned part of the infield.
- 1:36:52Fly ball, left field.
- 1:36:55Under it, Jim Wolford.
- 1:36:57Waiting. He has got it.
- 1:36:59And that's all for the Yankees in the fifth inning.
- 1:37:02No runs, one hit.
- 1:37:04They leave one.
- 1:37:06And halfway through the ball game,
- 1:37:08in the middle of the fifth inning, the score of the Yankees three and the Royals two.
- 1:37:12The Royal's official scoreboard-yiddle combination.
- 1:37:15So the Yankees are using pitching tonight after the first inning.
- 1:37:19Ruslan Foy at Biggeraw.
- 1:37:21He has settled down and has put the ball where he wanted it for the most part.
- 1:37:25He's not an overpowering type of pitcher anyway.
- 1:37:28A new batonist, 35, 1976 season.
- 1:37:31He's shown what kind of pitcher he is.
- 1:37:34A very deceptive pitcher who hides the ball well, keeps the ball down, and induces ground balls.
- 1:37:39He won't strike out a lot of people, but he'll do it when he needed it.
- 1:37:43And he is fan, too, so far.
- 1:37:45And the Yankees are really the outstanding pitcher for New York in their drive to the American League East this year.
- 1:37:52Just about the stopper after a disappointing, in some respects, year for Catfish Hunter.
- 1:37:58Although Catfish shows the money-picker he was yesterday.
- 1:38:02And the Royals are facing a fellow like Biggeraw.
- 1:38:06We'll have to, we'll have the work cut out for him because he seems to be getting better now.
- 1:38:10And is riding along very nicely, although it's just a one-run lead.
- 1:38:13We'll see.
- 1:38:21It's all through four and one-half minutes.
- 1:38:23The totals read like this.
- 1:38:24The Yankees have three runs, nine hits, one error.
- 1:38:28And they have had people on base all over the place.
- 1:38:31They have left a total of six, but they've gotten the three runs to put them out in front.
- 1:38:35The Kansas City Royals, two runs, only three hits, and they got all of those three hits in the first inning on Biggeraw.
- 1:38:41They've made no errors, and they have stranded two.
- 1:38:44And the two that they have stranded look very big right now because they trailed by a run.
- 1:38:49So the Royals come to bat in the fifth inning with Freddie Potek heading it off for them
- 1:38:54and heading it off for CBS Radio right now and carrying it through the second half of the game.
- 1:38:59The boys for the Detroit Tigers, Ernie Harwell.
- 1:39:02Thank you, Ned Martin and, hi again, everybody, Freddie Potek.
- 1:39:06We'll try to break that string that Biggeraw has now.
- 1:39:10He's set down the last ten Royals in order.
- 1:39:14Potek with a fly ball to the center field of the river.
- 1:39:16His first time is back.
- 1:39:17Three to two, the Yankees lead, last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:39:21And it's a fast ball outside, high and away from the right-hander at Biggeraw.
- 1:39:26...
- 1:39:29Nettles a little bit back at third base and wide of the bag.
- 1:39:33The other endfielders are back.
- 1:39:35Potek, right-hand batter, takes the strike.
- 1:39:37He started the bat and took it on the inside corner, one and one to count on Fred.
- 1:39:41He's claiming that the pitch is high.
- 1:39:44...
- 1:39:47We've had very few disputes in these two games so far.
- 1:39:50...
- 1:39:53Now Fred steps away from the batter's box.
- 1:39:56He is a very difficult strike zone.
- 1:39:58He is, you're not kidding.
- 1:40:00...
- 1:40:05Now Biggeraw gets his sign, goes into action, the pitch, swung on, fly ball to the field.
- 1:40:10The batter is going back, he'll have room, he's there, he makes the catch.
- 1:40:14...
- 1:40:18Catcher Martinez will be the next batter.
- 1:40:21...
- 1:40:22Incidentally, the Yankees averaged more than seven runs per game over their last six games of the regular season.
- 1:40:26They won five out of six.
- 1:40:28And the Royals averaged only two runs per game over that same period.
- 1:40:33And they won one and lost five.
- 1:40:36And they came into this championship series.
- 1:40:39Here's the right hand batting Martinez, the flake.
- 1:40:42He batted 228 for the season.
- 1:40:45...
- 1:40:49Biggeraw delivers, and it's a breaking ball over, strike call.
- 1:40:54Yesterday Martinez went over two.
- 1:40:57...
- 1:41:01Yankees, three runs, nine hitsThe Royals, two runs and three hits.
- 1:41:05One out in the last half of inning number five, and the bases are empty.
- 1:41:09Biggeraw goes to work again.
- 1:41:12The rib is a wide one, and they count even one and one.
- 1:41:15...
- 1:41:18A little bit of a different outfield alignment for Billy Martin in this game.
- 1:41:21...
- 1:41:23In contrast to the one yesterday, it's wide in left, rib is instead of it, gamble is in right field.
- 1:41:28...
- 1:41:29Here's a ball high, a breaking ball.
- 1:41:32...
- 1:41:34Biggeraw and trouble in the opening inning. It looks as if the Royals might knock him off the mound, but he's settled down.
- 1:41:41And nobody's been on base since that first inning.
- 1:41:44...
- 1:41:46He got a white to end the inning on a ground ball to third.
- 1:41:50And from then on everybody's gone down in order.
- 1:41:53The pitch is swung on and bowled away, back to the on deck circle.
- 1:41:57Two-two on Martinez.
- 1:41:59...
- 1:42:03Cincinnati meets Philadelphia today.
- 1:42:08Six to two, the Reds lead in their series, two games to none.
- 1:42:12...
- 1:42:14Yankees lead in this series, one game to none.
- 1:42:18Now the two-two pitch on the way. Here it is, he takes the high one.
- 1:42:22...
- 1:42:25Old count on Martinez.
- 1:42:27...
- 1:42:30...
- 1:42:34There'll be no game in this series tomorrow, action will be resumed in New York Tuesday night.
- 1:42:40...
- 1:42:44And the pitchers have been announced for that Tuesday night contest, Doc Ellis for the Yankees, and the Hassler will pitch for Kansas City.
- 1:42:52Now the full count delivery. He swings, five-all, hit into right field, fairly deep, gamble goes back, he's there, he's waiting.
- 1:42:59He has it and there are two down.
- 1:43:02Let's pause ten seconds for station identification. This is the CBS radio network.
- 1:43:08This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 1:43:13...
- 1:43:23Yankees ahead three to two, nobody on the bases, Figaro delivers, and the right-hand batting outfield, it takes the curve wide.
- 1:43:30Walford started the first inning, two run third with a singleThe next time up he bounced the first base.
- 1:43:38He takes the wide one, the two and all. Figaro are not hitting the plate with the consistency they did in their last couple of innings.
- 1:43:46They've got him throwing more pitches.
- 1:43:49And the Royals are taking more, but he has still set down the last twelve he faced.
- 1:43:55At the end, the now-downs.
- 1:43:59Three and all to count on Jim Walford.
- 1:44:03Jim, a native of California, makes his home now in the Kansas City area.
- 1:44:10But wind up in the pit, he looks to the strike. That was the breaking ball above the knee.
- 1:44:19Outfield is a little bit to the right. They've got him slightly over in the right centerThe pitch on the way.
- 1:44:24Walford.
- 1:44:26That'll be the second walk of Ed Figaro.
- 1:44:30After he had set down twelve in a row, he issues a walk to Walford.
- 1:44:35He's Cowan who contributes a single to that human-first inning.
- 1:44:40The Royals scored two in the opening inning on a single by Walford. He went to third on a single by Cowan.
- 1:44:46Came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of George Brett.
- 1:44:49Cowan stole second, went to third on a throwing error by Munson, and he scored on a single by Fouquet.
- 1:44:57Now the Yankees came back with one in their second and two in their third to take the lead.
- 1:45:03Now the set in the pit.
- 1:45:05Bounding ball is short. Stanley has the flip over to the second baseman Randolph in plenty of time and the side retires.
- 1:45:14No runs, no hits, no errors and one man left.
- 1:45:17And at the end of five innings, the score, the Yankees three, the Royals two.
- 1:45:23Racing officials say they have not confirmed that Donnie Allison's victory in the National 500 Stock Car Race has been confirmed.
- 1:45:33The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, that's NASCAR, says Allison's car has not cleared the post race inspection.
- 1:45:41A spokesman for Charlotte Motor Speedway says racing officials have told them the car has not cleared inspection.
- 1:45:47The reason is the closeness of the measurement of the engine size.
- 1:45:51And the spokesman says it will be necessary to allow the engine to cool down and at which time a final measurement will be made.
- 1:45:59Veteran racing driver Jackie Ickx was seriously injured in the U.S. Grand Prix in Washington, D.C.
- 1:46:05Ickx, a 31-year-old Belgian, suffered a compound fracture of his right ankle and a possible fracture of his lower left leg as well as minor burns.
- 1:46:15He lost the wheel during the race at one of the fastest points of the course and slammed into a guardrail.
- 1:46:23There's to be a World Series expert by knowing the history and events that make it America's top sports attraction.
- 1:46:33It's all inside the official 1976 World Series program, the one that's sold at the series.

- 1:47:00This meeting has been brought to you on behalf of Major League Baseball.
- 1:47:09Willie Randolph will lead it off with the Yankees in the sixth. They're ahead of the Royals now, 3-2.
- 1:47:14Randolph is the only Yankee in the two games who has not had a hit.
- 1:47:19Everybody else has had at least one.
- 1:47:22Right-hand batter takes a pitch outside from the left-hander Paul Spridolf, ball one.
- 1:47:31Wind up by Spridolf. He kicks and delivers and it's in too close, 2-0.
- 1:47:37Yankees have had a hit in every inning in this game and they had one in every inning in the first game, except the seventh when they went out 1-2-3.
- 1:47:45They've been very consistent. Downing ball to short, one hopper for Potec. Throw the first to Mayberry. He got it.
- 1:47:52They throw a little bit wide to the right-field side, but John kept his foot on the bag.
- 1:48:01His first family has had a soft line drive to white and second base, and then they've got a Texas League double into right field in the fourth inning.
- 1:48:11One of the five Yankee doubles. They have nine hits and five have been two-baggers.
- 1:48:18Spridolf working in relief for the start of Leonard. Delivered, here's another pop fly back into short right about the same clock.
- 1:48:24Poquette coming in. He has it. And they are two away.
- 1:48:30Almost a carbon copy of that matter.
- 1:48:37Here's Nicky Rivers, who has walked, bounced to second, and fly to set a field.
- 1:48:44Brad will play in close on him inside the bag, looking for the possibility from the speedy left-hand batting Rivers.
- 1:48:52Spridolf lines and pitches at the curve ball, last foul down the first base side on the ground.
- 1:48:58Yankees have three runs, nine hits, and one errorThe Royals have two runs, three hits, and no errors.
- 1:49:06Out the way, Rivers to hit late. They've got Cowans over in left center.
- 1:49:10Now Spridolf delivers. Rivers swings as a foul fly hits in the seats and right.
- 1:49:18Here, that one belongs to a man from Independence. I believe it did.
- 1:49:24It just came from the Truman Library.
- 1:49:31Nicky taking his time getting back to the batter's box.
- 1:49:36Spridolf came into the game in the third. He's allowed two hits.
- 1:49:41Three hits since he came in. There's a pitch outside.
- 1:49:46Gave up a single to May, the first man he faced, then doubles by Stanley and Nettles.
- 1:49:52None doing any damage. Here's the pitch. Rivers swings, bombing ball, second base,
- 1:49:56fights to his left as it fell to Mayberry, and they tied out one, two, three.
- 1:50:01And at the end of five and one half innings, the score, the Yankees three, the Royals two.
- 1:50:08A tough day on quarterbacks, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Vodkowski suffered a knee injury
- 1:50:14in that game against the New Orleans Saints and left before halftime.
- 1:50:19A second year starter from California, Vodkowski went down on a play in which the Saints were penalized
- 1:50:25for face maskingThe quarterback completed 4-7 for 49 yards before leaving the game
- 1:50:31and was replaced by a third year backup, Kim McQuicklin, with the Falcons trailing 20-0 at the half.
- 1:50:39And in that game, the Falcons eventually lost it by the score of 30-0.
- 1:50:47Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Bob Moose killed in a two-car accident near St. Clairsville, Ohio Saturday night
- 1:50:54on his 29th birthdayThe Highway Patrol says Moose was driving south on an Ohio State Highway
- 1:51:00about 10 miles north of St. Clairsville when he lost control.
- 1:51:05The car went off the road, came back on, and then collided head-on with a car in the opposite lane.
- 1:51:11The Patrol said a light rain was falling and Moose's vehicle was apparently traveling too fast for our conditions.
- 1:51:18Last half of inning, number six, then the Royal Stadium and the Yankees lead Kansas City 3-2.
- 1:51:26George Brett will lead it off. He'll be followed by Mayberry and McRae, the three best hitters on the Kansas City team,
- 1:51:32coming up now to look at the slants of Ed Bigarow on.
- 1:51:36And quite a lot of flack over George Brett's argument with Billy Martin concerning his brother,
- 1:51:43brother Ken traded by the Yankees to the White Sox.
- 1:51:48The leading brother combination in baseball history was the famous Della Halle family.
- 1:51:53They had five brothers. Big Ed, the most famous, he won a batting title in each league.
- 1:51:59And the O'Neals, the featuring Steve O'Neals and brothers, there were four brothers in that combination.
- 1:52:07And of course, many famous duos, the Dean brothers, for instance.
- 1:52:12Well, Brett, the batting champion in the American League, has drove in the first run for Kansas City for the sacrifice fly in the first inning.
- 1:52:20He bounced the second his next time up.
- 1:52:23Left hand about a waiting and Bigarow delivers. It's a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:52:28That was a change-up for Ed, one of the few he's thrown so far.
- 1:52:37Three to two, the Yankees lead six-inning. Brett swings, fly ball to the field. Rivers going back, back, back.
- 1:52:43Can't get it. It's off his glove. To the wall. Brett going for two. He's rounding second. Here he comes to third.
- 1:52:50Here's a remade at third. He's tied. He is safe.
- 1:52:53Rivers went back on the ball. Didn't get back far enough.
- 1:53:11Seemed to slightly misjudge it, then took a leap. Maybe it tipped his glove all the way to the wall. And Brett makes it to third.
- 1:53:31Here's Mayberry up, tying right at third for Kansas City. Doyle Alexander working in the Yankee ball pen.
- 1:53:41Three to two, the Yankees in the lead. Last half of the sixth inning, nobody else.
- 1:53:46Mayberry takes the ball in close from Bigarow.
- 1:53:52Brett led the American League in triples. And he's on third right now with a three-bagger.
- 1:53:59Now the launch in the fifth. Mayberry cuts, line drive, face hit.
- 1:54:03Brett will scoreThe ball cut off by Rivers. Mayberry makes the big turn, holds at first, and the game is tied three to three.
- 1:54:25Mayberry weighs in with his worst hit of the series, but a big one, he ties the game.
- 1:54:36You can hear the Kansas City crowd now yelling, go, go, go.
- 1:54:41Their heroes have tied the game in the sixth inning, three-three, McRae at the plate.
- 1:54:46Mayberry short-leaded first. McRae swings, a little loop will hit down past first base.
- 1:54:51Mayberry may go foul, it does. Cased by Randolph and Campbell, if neither one can reach it.
- 1:55:01Kidraugh working in the Yankee ball pen right now. They had him up earlier.
- 1:55:06And there he is, the first inning. Now the Royals have bounced back with a run here.
- 1:55:12The tie of the game is three-three, sixth inning.
- 1:55:16They have Mayberry at first, no way out. Good hit and run, man, McRae at the plate.
- 1:55:22Infield is in double play, depth of the Yankee. McRae has walked and fanned so far.
- 1:55:31Now the steps by Figueroa. He doesn't have it. Here's a pop foul off the first.
- 1:55:37Campbell is digging near the seat and he won't get it. It's a adjustment to the photographer's area in front of the field feet.
- 1:55:46Rand Jackson, the left-hander, has now joined with Kidraugh on the Yankee ball pen.
- 1:55:55Campbell is going to try to keep Mayberry close. McRae will go to that opposite field from time to time.
- 1:56:03That will give him a little larger target on that side of the infield if he wants to catch it.
- 1:56:09They have Rivers slightly over to right-center. Game tie, three-three. That's the pitch.
- 1:56:14He takes the fast ball in close. That would have been a very tough pitch to try to go to right field with.
- 1:56:23One and two, the counter of McRae, standing deep in the batter's box. Now he's tough to wait and play.
- 1:56:30Checking his sign with the veteran catcher MunsonThe one-two pitch. He takes a breaking ball wide.
- 1:56:38Figueroa has gone all the way for the Yankees.
- 1:56:44Had a shaky first inning. Then settled down. Retired 12 in a row.
- 1:56:50Now here in the sixth inning, the Royals have picked up a run to tie the game.
- 1:56:57Waiting on a two-two delivery at the plate is McRae. Here it comes. He swings as they fly ball to right.
- 1:57:03Campbell's coming over near the line. He's there. He has it. Mayberry goes back-tagged and holds it first.
- 1:57:13One out, one on. And Tom Fouquet, who's singled in a run in the first shift of the plate, back in the first inning will be the batter.
- 1:57:24Second time he's batting five is better.
- 1:57:28Willie Randolph comes in to say a word or two to Figueroa for a moment.
- 1:57:35After Fouquet, it'll be Frank White.
- 1:57:40Yankees have three runs, nine hits, one errorThe Royals have three runs, five hits, and they have no errors.
- 1:57:46Fouquet is spread straight away by the outfield.
- 1:57:50He's coming by ball. That's better deep. White going back, back, back, back. He can't get it. It's off the wall.
- 1:57:55Mayberry coming around third. And he is seeing Wade Holm, who's a relay to the plate.
- 1:58:00He's in phase with the double and the Royals take the lead 4-3.
- 1:58:22And he's tied to left center. Tom Fouquet brings in the tiebreaker and it brings Billy Martin out toward the mound and it brings a cascade of food from the Kansas City gathering here.
- 1:58:40Billy is going to make a change, a motion to the bullpen.
- 1:58:48He has the kid row out there, right-hander. And he has the left-hander Grant Jackson.
- 1:58:55We just have to wait for the three. We want to bring the kid row in, I believe, Ernie.
- 1:59:04You're tuned to your CBS Radio Network station for game number two in the American League playoffs.
- 1:59:09And that means you're tuned to the only radio talk for the World Series starting Saturday, October the 16th.
- 1:59:15CBS Radio Sports brings you exclusive play-by-play coverage. Follow the series on radio right here.
- 1:59:30And Tuesday on CBS Radio, it will be Philadelphia, Cincinnati at 3.05 Eastern and 2.05 Central time.
- 1:59:37And Kansas City at Yankee Stadium at 8.05 Eastern and 7.05 Central.
- 1:59:43All right, Ed Figueroa was breathing beautifully after the bad first inning.
- 1:59:48He went to 12 batters without getting anybody get on base.
- 1:59:53Then Wolford broke that up with a walk in the fifth, but nothing happened.
- 1:59:56In this inning, though, Brett tripled Mayberry's single and after McRae flat-outs, Fouquet has doubled.
- 2:00:01And this kid row is on. So Figueroa goes five in one third inning.
- 2:00:06Figueroa's up six-tips in four runs. He's responsible for a base runner. He walked through, he stuck out two.
- 2:00:14And gives way now to the eighth of the Yankee staff in relief this year, Dick Kidrow.
- 2:00:24And while you're giving that rundown on the statistics, Billy Martin came from the mound.
- 2:00:29And of course, there was a lot of hooting from the Kansas City fans.
- 2:00:32He was mounted with a wave of the cap, got a mock bow, and then he threw kisses to the insomniac.
- 2:00:40Targeted Sparkey Lyle before the game. He said, I haven't really pitched much in the second half.
- 2:00:45The reason is because Grant Jackson on the left side had done such an excellent job.
- 2:00:50And Dick Kidrow has been super in relief. He's won four and lost five on the year.
- 2:00:56And in 92 in the third inning, he was given up 80 hits and struck out 65, a good run average of 2.63 for Kidrow.
- 2:01:05A guy that can throw hard. And the book on him is he's better in short relief, I think, Ernie, than in long.
- 2:01:12He's excellent the first time around. I figure that maybe the second look at him, you might eventually get to him.
- 2:01:18But that's why he's been the eighth and ninth inning relief artist that he has been for the Yankees.
- 2:01:23Dick's strong guy throws hard and he's got the control that they really need.
- 2:01:30The first man to face him will be Frank White.
- 2:01:34Poquette out at second base and so far he's been a big man. Poquette has. He's given him two runs.
- 2:01:39And he's the only man with two hits. Bird and Midori are working now in the Royal Bowl Fair.
- 2:01:48Kidrow picked up ten saves during the regular season.
- 2:01:55Here's White stepping in to face himThe Royals have taken the lead for the first time since early in the game.
- 2:02:02Four to three over the Yankees. Sixth inning.
- 2:02:05Kidrow delivers. White hits a chopper down to third. Bare ball, fielded by Nettles.
- 2:02:09He throws the first to campus. White is out and holding at second his poquette.
- 2:02:13Nettles got the high hopper, hit rather slowly. Took a quick look to second.
- 2:02:18Checked his poquette back there and threw out the batter.
- 2:02:22Red, hottyThe little shortstop setting up now. He hits the ball pretty well, but he's down to the center field of rivers.
- 2:02:31Each of the starting pickers has departed. Bigger Roy of the Yankees and the lineman of the Royal.
- 2:02:41Kidrow, a native of San Francisco, makes his home now in Kansas City.
- 2:02:4828-year-old right-hander.
- 2:02:54A couple of good years at Cleveland. Well, the Yankees picked him up. There's a swing and a miss.
- 2:03:03That looks like he's slotty. He's got a sinking fastball and a good curve, and he'll use his screwball.
- 2:03:10That'll break in on a right-hand batter. Now the pitch. Swing, and he missed that one.
- 2:03:17Two quick strikes. Kidrow in control here early after coming and relieving the starter figure.
- 2:03:244-3, Roy used to leave New York. Thick finish.
- 2:03:28Now the big right-hander. Kick to the livers. Here's a ball low. That was a breaking pitch.
- 2:03:331-2 on Fred Potech. Outfield plays Fred straight up. And the infield is back at this stage with two out,
- 2:03:41and folks get trying to lead off second to base. Here's the set to pitch. He swings a pop foul.
- 2:03:47It'll reach the seat. 1-2 on Potech.
- 2:03:55The Royal scored first in this game. They got two in the opening gameThe Yankees got one in the second.
- 2:03:59Two in the third to take the lead. They held the lead until here in the sixth inning.
- 2:04:03That's when the Roy was pushed over to...
- 2:04:07Now Kidrow, checking his time with Munson. It's a 1-2 count on Potech.
- 2:04:14The pitch is on the way. He swings it, a bounding ball to short. Stanley gobbles it up.
- 2:04:18Fire is over to Chambley to hobble the ball, and he saves.
- 2:04:23Stanley's had it and hobbled it. And on the third goes Potech. It was a good throw.
- 2:04:29He just hobbled the ball, and the contact.
- 2:04:33Plus the back save. It'll be an error charge to Chambley.
- 2:04:43Nothing wrong with the throw. He just didn't catch it. So here's Martinez to catch your butt, Martinez.
- 2:04:53And the same thing each time he came to bat, he flied to right.
- 2:05:01That's the second New York errorThe other one belongs to Munson.
- 2:05:064-3, Kansas City. Right called. A fastball on the inside corner.
- 2:05:18The Royals have it a single, a double, a triple, and they've been safe on an error this inning.
- 2:05:27Right-hand batting Martinez waitingThe pitch is cut on, and he didn't get it.
- 2:05:31It was in under the hands, the fastball.
- 2:05:36A pitch that's always hard to handle.
- 2:05:45Contact to Braddock for his base. Edging off now.
- 2:05:51Here's the set by Tidro, and he flits one over there.
- 2:05:59He had 51 steals, he led his team, and was caught 15 times during the season.
- 2:06:10Now edging off again. Here's Tidro's set position.
- 2:06:13Here he goesThe pitch is flung on. A fly ball hit back into short left. Stanley going back.
- 2:06:18White on upfield is coming in behind him, and now Dwight, he'll make the catch.
- 2:06:24That retires the Royals, but they take the lead. Two runs, three hits.
- 2:06:31One Yankee error, and two runners go left on base.
- 2:06:40Motor Speedway in North Carolina finally confirmed that Donnie Allison won the National 500 Stock Car Race.
- 2:06:47It was Allison's first stock car victory in five years, and he had to wait four hours to have it confirmed.
- 2:06:54Of course, we were so excited about it, we had to tell you a little bit earlier than we normally would.
- 2:06:58But anyway, he got in there, and he got the victory.
- 2:07:01Allison's car was ruled legal after a post-race inspection by officials of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.
- 2:07:09NASCAR officials withheld confirmation of the victory because of what his spokesman called
- 2:07:14The closeness in the measurement of the engine size.
- 2:07:17Officials waited for about an hour, letting the engine cool before taking measurements,
- 2:07:22which showed that it met NASCAR requirements.
- 2:07:27Taking a look at the National Hockey League activity, Montreal and Buffalo tied 1-1 in their game,
- 2:07:33which is now in the second period, and Boston leads Cleveland 1-0. That game is in the second period.
- 2:07:41Here's the seventh inning now in Royal Stadium, Kansas City, the Royals lead the Yanks 4-3.
- 2:07:47Both bullfens are busy, Doug the Bird and Steve Mingore in the Royal bullfin,
- 2:07:52Joel Alexander and Ken Hoffman heating up in the Yankee bullfin.
- 2:08:00Grydoff and Labe will be facing Roy White, Herman Munson, and Chris Shamblett,
- 2:08:07The heavy part of the Yankee batting order in this inning. They're number two, three, and four hitters
- 2:08:11for Billy Martin's team. Grydoff enters the game.
- 2:08:16In the third inning, relieving Leonard, Leonard was touched for all three Yankee runs
- 2:08:22and gave up six of the nine hits that they had obtained.
- 2:08:29The Reds beat the Fills this afternoon in the Philadelphia 62 Cincinnati Leagues
- 2:08:33and the National League Championship Series, two victories to none.
- 2:08:39Here's Roy White, heating up. Roy's had a single, a double, and a face-on ball in this game.
- 2:08:48And yesterday had a double and four trips. Batting right-handed against the left-handed,
- 2:08:53he takes a curve at face-outside. All one, the count on White. Outfield around the left on him, the infield back.
- 2:09:02Pop up, right field, going back is White, White. Behind him, Polk Kep, they're both there,
- 2:09:09and Polk Kep's the right fielder next to Gets. Almost a little nishap there.
- 2:09:14Boy, it's an adventure every time one's popped up to right field tonight when the Yankees are batting.
- 2:09:19I think Wolford did call and just, I'm not sure, the last moment, whether White even heard him this time.
- 2:09:27Here's Monson. He's heading to double play, double and bounced into a fourth out to shortstop.
- 2:09:40Big Husky right-hand batting, driven in over 100 runs in the past two seasons.
- 2:09:47Finished the season with a 3-0-2 batting mark. Bounding ball right back to spinoff, good stop, throw to first, deep out.
- 2:09:55There are two quick outs in the Yankee seventh.
- 2:09:59Chris Dabless will be the batter. Chris with a bounce to second, a single, and a ground out to first.
- 2:10:07The only Yankees without a hit tonight are Mickey Rivers. He's been on in the walk.
- 2:10:12And Willie Randolph.
- 2:10:19Split off left-hands one of the play to say breaking ball low and away. Ball one. Four runs, six hits, no errors for Kansas City.
- 2:10:27New York three runs, nine hits. They've made two errors.
- 2:10:31Bounding ball left side, maybe a hit. Modek picks it up long throw to Naberik. Not in time.
- 2:10:38Freddy Modek was playing over near second.
- 2:10:42He ranged wide to his right in the hole, but he had no chance on that ball. This was just too deep.
- 2:10:47And Shambliss has an infield hit.
- 2:10:54Three Yankees now in the fifth base. And here's one of them, Carlos May.
- 2:11:00May and White and Shambliss.
- 2:11:05Two down, a man on. That man at first base is the potential tying run for New York.
- 2:11:10Royals lead the Yankees 4-3, 7-8.
- 2:11:14Good off kicks and deals. Here's a point it'll be foul over toward the Yankee dugout.
- 2:11:21A little surprise effort there by Carlos May trying to butt his way on.
- 2:11:34These two clubs met in a great many close game. This is typical of the action when these two get together.
- 2:11:44Here's a cut and a miss on a breaking pitch.
- 2:11:53Close stance hitter, Carlos May. And as Ned Martin told you, he choked the bat a good bit more than most.
- 2:12:03Bounding ball past the mound. White charges has it for the first to Mayberry. And the side retires.
- 2:12:10The round one hits no errors. One man left. And the middle of the club, that was the Yankees. It's the Royals 4-3.
- 2:12:19In case you missed it and checking out how your favorite team did in the National Football League today.
- 2:12:25The Baltimore Colts over Miami 28-14The Colts move into first place in the NFC.
- 2:12:31And actually make that the National Football League's AFC East. New York Jets over Buffalo 17-14.
- 2:12:37Dallas 24, the Giants 14. Kansas City 33, Washington 30. Cleveland 18, Pittsburgh 16. Cincinnati 21.
- 2:12:47Tampa Bay nothingThe Lions 30, the Patriots 10. Minnesota 20, Chicago 19, Houston 17, Denver 3.
- 2:12:56The Norrland Saints 30, Atlanta nothing. Green Bay 27, Seattle 20. St. Louis 33, Philadelphia 14.
- 2:13:04And the Raiders over the Chargers 27-17. That's a look at what happened Sunday in the National Football League.
- 2:13:12On Monday the San Francisco 49ers will take on the Los Angeles Rams.
- 2:13:18Okay, let's get back to the action at Royal Stadium in Kansas City.
- 2:13:23The pay to tenants tonight is $41,091. That's 14.
- 2:13:30I don't know how they could get 14 more in, but they did it.
- 2:13:36We were talking about the ball not carrying very well at night in this ballpark.
- 2:13:40And the Royals hit only 65 home runs in 1976.
- 2:13:44And at this stadium there were 72 home runs. Yet the Royals hit 37 and the opposition hit 35.
- 2:13:51If you want to go back away, the Chicago White Sox in 1988 hit only three home runs.
- 2:13:57The next season, the whole team in 154 games.
- 2:14:02See the John Sillis Bell and the picture at one. Three home runs for the whole team.
- 2:14:09Jim Walford will lead it off. He's the right-hand batting outfielder.
- 2:14:14Royals ahead 4-3. Kid Rowe and relief from Figueroa.
- 2:14:21He pitches. There's a pounding ball. Deep short. Stanley backhanded.
- 2:14:24Here's a photo first to Cameron. Got him. It was close.
- 2:14:29You need a strong arm on this tartan turf net and he showed us one then.
- 2:14:34Partick usually on the shortstop of the Royals has considered one of the strongest shortstop of arm that Stanley kind of grows on you.
- 2:14:42The more you see him, the more you like him.
- 2:14:44And when the season started, he really didn't have the job.
- 2:14:47It was sort of a platoon affair between him and Nathan.
- 2:14:55Here's Cowan. He's had a single in three turns at bat.
- 2:14:59Single in the first inning and then bounced the short the next two times.
- 2:15:06Kid Rowe, the big right-hander, now winds into the business and Al Cowan takes the fastball highball one.
- 2:15:124-3The Royals lead the Yanks in the seventh inning.
- 2:15:18Outfield straight up on Cowan. He stands deep. Swings and fouls it away.
- 2:15:23One-and-one, the Cowan and Al.
- 2:15:29The only Royale with two hits is Polketti. He's driven in two runs with a single and a double.
- 2:15:34The other hits belong to the first four men in the batting order, one apiece, Wolfman, Cowan, Brett, and Mayberry.
- 2:15:40Here it comes. He swings with a bonding ball to short. There's Stanley over again to his right.
- 2:15:44Has it long throw and Cameron's got the ball.
- 2:15:50David Berkley Cowan ran into Stanley and this couldn't hold onto the ball.
- 2:15:56We'll wait for the scorer. There have been two Yankee errors already, one by Munson and one by Cameron.
- 2:16:04So it was off to the first base side a little bit and this poor stab was to go over there with his glove hand.
- 2:16:10And he was jostled by the runner, I believe.
- 2:16:15That's right, and he had to reach up and then the runner, Cowan, ran into the ball.
- 2:16:21Here's George Brett at the plate.
- 2:16:30They've charged the error to Stanley on the throw.
- 2:16:34Stanley's had to reach for it and that's the reason the shortstop got the error.
- 2:16:38So to first, Mackinac and Thomas Cowan.
- 2:16:43That's the third missed cue by the Yankees.
- 2:16:48And that's the third New York 4-3, 7-1. One out, Brett at the plate.
- 2:16:54He has a triple in the sacrifice and he's bounced to second.
- 2:16:56Throw to first again.
- 2:16:58And Cowan's back in time. He's a good runner.
- 2:17:02Only two runners on this team going their own.
- 2:17:05Freddy Patek and Amos Otis. Otis is out for the series with an injury.
- 2:17:13Now the pitch to Brett is outside.
- 2:17:17Kansas City sitting them. More field is this.
- 2:17:21But everybody except Patek and Otis, for each hitter they'll give a sign saying you can go.
- 2:17:28If you don't get that sign, you don't go.
- 2:17:33There he goesThe pitch is hung on and missed.
- 2:17:35So the second is not in time. It gets high.
- 2:17:38Well, Kansas City field. Landau couldn't hold it.
- 2:17:40Getting up and moving to third is Cowan.
- 2:17:44And on third, one man down for Kansas City.
- 2:17:49With a throwing error, charges to Montalvo.
- 2:17:52And Cowan will pick up the stolen base.
- 2:17:55The second error.
- 2:18:02Landau for Kansas City.
- 2:18:06With a throwing error, charges to Montalvo.
- 2:18:09And Cowan will pick up the stolen base.
- 2:18:12The second error.
- 2:18:14For Montalvo's game.
- 2:18:18They said they were going to run early and they have turned it to their advantage tonight.
- 2:18:22And they're on the attack now, forcing the bad throws by Montalvo.
- 2:18:26Each time Montalvo made that bad throw, he's just stolen base for Cowan.
- 2:18:30And the first inning in here in the seventh.
- 2:18:32Now the Yankees are going to be forced to pull their infield in.
- 2:18:36One-one pitch to Brett. He backed away.
- 2:18:42The pulled-in infield is even more treacherous for defensive purposes on this tartan serve.
- 2:18:52Cowan's coming down off third, shut by Tedrow. Two-one-fifth.
- 2:18:56Brett Twinkle mounting ball to first.
- 2:18:58Chambers coming to the plate. They've got him in a chase.
- 2:19:00Cowan's being chased back by Munson.
- 2:19:02The throw goes to Nettles. He moves him. Now Tedrow takes the throw near the plate and tags him.
- 2:19:08And on the field is choice. Brett takes second to base.
- 2:19:11It'll be the first baseman of the catcher to the third baseman to the pitcher.
- 2:19:15Three to two to five to one.
- 2:19:26That means that the Royals end up with a managed second and two down.
- 2:19:30There will be Mayberry who's taking them through the first hit of the series with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
- 2:19:38And drove Brett home with the one-two-three tying run at that point.
- 2:19:42Four to three, the Royals lead the Yankees now.
- 2:19:46Randolph is very deep. He's out in right field on Mayberry.
- 2:19:50They're not overshifting on him with that managed second to base.
- 2:19:53Brett's getting a king-size lead down our second.
- 2:19:56Now gives him a look and he moves back slightly.
- 2:20:05Royals four on six hits, Yankees three runs in it.
- 2:20:09Mayberry waits on the first hit.
- 2:20:12Swing and a bounding ball, deep right field, knocked down by Randolph for the first.
- 2:20:16He got him. And playing the position played off, he threw him off from short right field.
- 2:20:22Great play by Willie Randolph. No runs, no hits, two errors, one man left.
- 2:20:30And at the end of the seventh inning, Royals four, Yankees three.
- 2:20:38The Royals who have come back in this ball game have to rely, as they say, on running, which they've exhibited tonight.
- 2:20:45Although the play just recorded, the one before the fine play by Willie Randolph showed questionable judgment in sending the runner home.
- 2:20:53Now, was it dead out in the rundown?
- 2:20:56It didn't matter if the runner got the second base on the field, it was choice.
- 2:20:59They still knocked down a runner at third.
- 2:21:01You'd rather have him hold there, I would believe, with a drawn-in infield, and Mayberry, like a shambler, would have had to make the play alone on Brett.
- 2:21:10You'd still have a runner at third where a wild pitch or an error or something like that might get him home.
- 2:21:15But the Royals will run, and they have run tonight.
- 2:21:17They've done it all season long, and they call themselves a 90-foot ball run, meaning they don't hit many home runs, which they don't.
- 2:21:24They're not that kind of a club at all.
- 2:21:26They will run on you, they'll hit and run, they'll steal, and that is the way they play the game on this card, sir, like so many National League clubs do.
- 2:21:34You'll watch for more of it in the series.
- 2:21:41Now, don't forget, fans, starting next Saturday, October the 16th, you'll hear the World Series action, exclusive radio play-by-play right here on this CBS Radio Network station.
- 2:21:54The bullpen's a busy.
- 2:21:57They've been out for a while working in the Yankee bullpen and in the Kansas City bullpen in Doug Byrd and Steve Midori.
- 2:22:05They've both been playing for quite a while.
- 2:22:07Great play there by Willie Randolph on saving off another Kansas City ball.
- 2:22:11As we told you, he'd stationed himself out in right field, and Mayberry hit the ball in a spot that ordinarily would have been an easy and clean base hit.
- 2:22:20But Randolph ranged wide to his left.
- 2:22:23He grabbed it, fell down almost, and threw the man out at first base.
- 2:22:28Oh, that keeps it a one-run margin for the Lawyer on the order three, the Yankees batting in the eighth.
- 2:22:35His nettles, his walks, wide to center and double.
- 2:22:38One of the five Yankee doubles.
- 2:22:45Left hand batting third base when he takes the ball to Silverfoot Low, ball one.
- 2:22:50Middards started for KC, Spudoff relieving him in the third.
- 2:22:56Wind up, here's the pitch.
- 2:22:58He takes the cut, and this is trying to hold up, but he went across.
- 2:23:06Royals four, New York three, eighth inning.
- 2:23:11Ball out of play on the check swing.
- 2:23:22Yankees have out hit their opponent, and it's the sixth.
- 2:23:30Here's the motion by Spudoff.
- 2:23:32Here's a bounding ball passed around, Patek charges near second, slips it over to Mayberry, got him.
- 2:23:44Here's Aske Gammel, who has a lot of power.
- 2:23:50Aske with a single to second, he's flat out the next two times, once to center, once to left.
- 2:23:58Royals ahead, four, three, it's the evening, the Yankees have bat, they've got the bases empty and all the way.
- 2:24:05Gammel is scraping around now with his spikes not quite set against the left-hander, Spudoff.
- 2:24:13Aske started because a right-hander started for KC, but Smartins kept him in there.
- 2:24:18Here's a little number hit foul back in the play.
- 2:24:22That one just skidded off the end of the bat.
- 2:24:30And we'll get an inspection of the baseball by Larry Barnett.
- 2:24:39And he'll toss that one out of play.
- 2:24:49Gammel leaning in, waiting on a strike one delivery, swings and fouls it back to the screen.
- 2:24:54Track two on Aske.
- 2:24:57Since they've remodeled Yankee Stadium, Gammel has hit some of the longest drives in that ballpark.
- 2:25:06Started out in the nationally with a cut, then to Philly, then to Cleveland, and from there to the Yankees.
- 2:25:11Here's the strike two pitch.
- 2:25:14Outside, Spudoff tried for the far corner and didn't grab it.
- 2:25:18One and two to count on Gammel. Four-three, Royals lead the Yankees.
- 2:25:22Yankees lead in the American League Championship Series, one victory to none.
- 2:25:27Here's a bombing ball at third. Deeper spread. Has it. Long throw to Mayberry.
- 2:25:32Not a very easy play for Brett. A high hopper deep at the back.
- 2:25:41And they are two away.
- 2:25:49Interesting matchup there between the two third baseman.
- 2:25:54George Brett's native has forgotten his first inning yesterday. He's playing well down there now.
- 2:26:00Here's Willie Randolph now home for three.
- 2:26:03Right hand batting second baseman takes the strike.
- 2:26:09Gammel the only Yankee without hitting the two games.
- 2:26:14Spudoff kicks a little bit. There's a change up that's small.
- 2:26:20One and one they got on Randolph.
- 2:26:27Wind up the pitch. There's a change up that comes in high. Two and one.
- 2:26:30Randolph and Nettles that may be outstanding defensive plays on the series so far.
- 2:26:35Nettles catching a foul fly near the fence. Randolph throwing out Mayberry in the last half inning.
- 2:26:42Here's a fastball wide. Three and one they got on Willie.
- 2:26:54Twenty-two years old Willie Randolph waiting. And he takes a walk.
- 2:26:59Spudoff missed the far corner. Oh it's two out. Randolph draws a fast.
- 2:27:07That'll be the second walk off the reliever Spudoff.
- 2:27:10Stanley has been called back for the Vachelou Panella.
- 2:27:14Will now be inserted as a pass batter.
- 2:27:17And we'll get the customary a new rule here on the post.
- 2:27:24I had two for four in the game yesterday.
- 2:27:30Both of them single.
- 2:27:33And we've got a little confab out there on the mound.
- 2:27:39Martinez, Brett, Spudoff talking over the situation.
- 2:27:45Now Martinez comes back.
- 2:27:49Now he leaves and I move.
- 2:27:55I think we're going to get a message.
- 2:27:59Dean Michael I believe running down to say something to Elton Howard.
- 2:28:03And Elton will relay that message to Randolph at first base.
- 2:28:08That's a very unusual maneuver in a baseball game Ned.
- 2:28:11Well, Dick Michael had to get into a serious level.
- 2:28:15Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
- 2:28:20Now Panella has stepped away from the plate and Dick Houser is having a little tic-tac-tac with him.
- 2:28:32Well they say don't take a chance if you're not quite sure ask and get it from the horse's mouth.
- 2:28:39Now it's Panella at the plate. It's 281 in the regular season.
- 2:28:46Out there the year before with an inner ear problem.
- 2:28:53Digging in now standing deep at the plate and they flip this over to first base.
- 2:28:58They're trying to keep Randolph close. He's back in time.
- 2:29:01Royals lead New York 4-3The Yankees are batting in the evening here in Kansas City.
- 2:29:06Two out on the 91st base.
- 2:29:11Another throw to first and he's back.
- 2:29:17Randolph with 37 steals this year. He was caught 12 times and four out of five against the Royals.
- 2:29:24He's got a good lead. He doesn't go to pitches of strike.
- 2:29:30He went off, flipped the fastball through there and hit the outside corner on Panella.
- 2:29:39Two out, walk to Randolph putting the tying run on the bases of the Yankees in the eighth inning.
- 2:29:47Set, here's the pitch. It's a pitch out but he's not moving.
- 2:29:51Well the count is one and one.
- 2:29:54That is very deep at third and as you would imagine he's guarding the line here in the late innings.
- 2:30:02Now Panella digging in waiting. It's a one-one delivery coming up.
- 2:30:07Here it is. He takes the ball outside. That looks like a change.
- 2:30:11Two and one. They count on Luke Panella.
- 2:30:18And Martinez wants another confab with his pitcher's split-off.
- 2:30:30Buck coming behind the plate again and Panella steps out.
- 2:30:37Randolph trying to lengthen his lead at first base.
- 2:30:45Now split-off, the left-hander looks over there and the pitch. Panella takes the ball outside.
- 2:30:50Three and one.
- 2:30:56Working carefully on Lou and now he's gotten behind him.
- 2:31:04Mayberry holding on the back with Randolph. He's got a longer lead.
- 2:31:09And the pitch is swung on five-all instead of field. Down goes back. He's there. He has it for them.
- 2:31:17No runs, no hits, no errors, one man left.
- 2:31:21In the middle of the eighth inning, Kansas mid-4, New York 3.
- 2:31:26We've given you the scores of games in the National Football League periodically.
- 2:31:31Let's take a look at the standings.
- 2:31:34In the American Conference East, Baltimore is the leader by one game over New England.
- 2:31:39Baltimore has won four and lost one. New England is three and two.
- 2:31:43Buffalo and Miami are two and threeThe Jets are one and four.
- 2:31:47In the Central, Cincinnati and Houston are both four and one.
- 2:31:50Cleveland has won two and lost three. And Pittsburgh is one and four.
- 2:31:55In the West, Oakland is the leader with a four and one record.
- 2:31:58Denver and San Diego are three and two. Kansas City is one and four.
- 2:32:02And Tampa Bay is oh and five.
- 2:32:05In the National East, Dallas is the leader at five and oh.
- 2:32:08The only unbeaten untied team in the National Football League.
- 2:32:11St. Louis is four and one. Washington is three and two.
- 2:32:15Philadelphia is two and three. And the Giants are oh and five.
- 2:32:18In the Central, Minnesota is four and oh. Chicago is three and two.
- 2:32:24Detroit and Green Bay are two and three.
- 2:32:26In the West, Los Angeles is three wins, no losses in a tie. San Francisco is three and one.
- 2:32:33Those two teams will meet at Memorial College Stadium in Los Angeles Monday night.
- 2:32:38New Orleans is two and three. Atlanta is one and four. And Seattle is oh and five.
- 2:32:47Two errors by Munson. One by Chambliss and one by the now departed George Sumpfret family.
- 2:32:59We've got words from the press box in relation to Mr. Squillof.
- 2:33:04He has now gone to the market for a charity video.
- 2:33:08Sean is two and 27 when he's home after the break.
- 2:33:12In the finger of his throwing hand, here's McRae to lead it off.
- 2:33:17Kansas City ahead at four to three over New York.
- 2:33:21Mason now at shortstop replacing Stanley for the Yankees.
- 2:33:24Kid Rowe on the mound, but it is McRae hits one down to a third.
- 2:33:28Nettles has it wide at the back, flips it over to Chambliss and is one away.
- 2:33:35Well here is the hitting hero so far for the Royals coming up.
- 2:33:39Tom Polkett, he's had a single and a double and he's driven in two runs.
- 2:33:45He's the only Royal with more than one hit.
- 2:33:57Left hand batting, Polkett at the break.
- 2:34:00Kid Rowe in relief for Spigaroa, he came on in the sixth inning.
- 2:34:04Right hander kicks and fires, it's a curve in close. All one to count.
- 2:34:14Royals four, Yankees three in the eighth.
- 2:34:18Outside fastball two and O.
- 2:34:29Left hander batting, waiting on the next one, here it comes. He takes the wide one, three and all to count.
- 2:34:37Well the seven runs in the game are charged to the two starting pitches so far.
- 2:34:47Here's a ball and it's too close to get the walk.
- 2:34:54The first walk issued by Kid Rowe, he's not allowed to hit it if he took over the sixth.
- 2:34:59It's the third run that the Royals have put on, the other two came on errors.
- 2:35:06Here's Frank White who is 0-3 in this game.
- 2:35:12Still looking for his first hit in the series, he went 0-2 yesterday.
- 2:35:20Polkett trying to get a lead, he's not off air far, Campbell is holding on the bag with him, right hand batting White at the plate.
- 2:35:25And he takes the ball in close.
- 2:35:33This has been a close game all the way, two nothing Royals, then two to one, then three to two Yankees,
- 2:35:38then two runs in the sixth, then the Royals in front, 4-3, that's the way it stands now.
- 2:35:42Little lob over the first base by Kid Rowe, the runner Polkett backs with ease.
- 2:35:50Yankee outfield is shading White around toward right just slightly, run it goes, a pitch out, he swings and fouls it away.
- 2:35:56White protecting that runner, reached out and fouled it away.
- 2:36:00After months in call for the pitch out, did that very well too, it was away from him but it wasn't a pitch out,
- 2:36:07there was enough away so that he could just fail to distract, he actually threw his bat at it and actually might have saved a runner being thrown out.
- 2:36:16Yankees have smelled out that running in this series a couple of times, very effective with it yesterday.
- 2:36:27White waits on a 1-1 delivery from Kid Rowe, the throw goes to first instead though and Polkett is back easily.
- 2:36:36Kansas City leading 4-3, they're about to be inbidding with the man out and the man out.
- 2:36:41There he goes, the pitch is swung on, hit the right field but it'll be foul.
- 2:36:46Hitting the barrier and follow the season and then bounding back on the playing field where Gambel tosses it back.
- 2:36:55Royals have a lot of hitters who can go to the opposite field, that's the philosophy of the batting coach Charlie Lowe.
- 2:37:02And these players are very high on Charlie, they'll listen to him and they'll follow his precepts as far as hitting is concerned.
- 2:37:13He believes in not letting the batter over swing, meet the ball, not stop at the home run all the time.
- 2:37:20Throw the first, he's back in time.
- 2:37:27Kansas City leads 4-3, HC. Polkett edging off again, not much to believe for him, he doesn't go.
- 2:37:34The pitch is swung on to Lupa, hit over the head of Randolph in the right field.
- 2:37:38Polkett rounding second hits the third, Rivers strips them all back into the second base from Randolph.
- 2:37:43The relay man runs it into the empty area and the Royals have run it to first and third.
- 2:37:58That brings up Freddy Polkett.
- 2:38:01He's had a goal for three in this game, he's tried to set it twice, he was safe on the air.
