- 0:40drinking. There are no dues of fees for
- 0:43AIR membership. We are self support through our
- 0:45own contributions. AIR is not allied with any sect,
- 0:49denomination, politics, organization or institution.
- 0:53Does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses or
- 0:58oppose any clauses. Our primary pass is still
- 1:01Someone help other Alcoholics achieve sobriety.
- 1:05Hey, I'm Harry. I'm a member of Alcoholics
- 1:07Anonymous. You know, I've been asked to
- 1:14record this for the last four years and I never got around to
- 1:18doing it because I can. I always think and what, what
- 1:22can I, what can I share that would be any good?
- 1:26And the truth of it is, is I just got to share my truth.
- 1:31You know, when I was a young lad, I was always a bit shy and
- 1:35introverted and I really didn't fit in.
- 1:39And, but you know, there was a going away party for some people
- 1:45when I was like 15 years old and oh, you know, the gloves were
- 1:49taken off. I was allowed to have some
- 1:51drinks. I was drinking Brandy and coke
- 1:53and whatever it was and I had a really good time and I was able
- 1:56to get up and dance floor and even talk to the adults and and
- 2:00tell them whatever I was saying. I don't really remember much of
- 2:03it. But few weeks later there was a
- 2:07school social. Never been to the school social
- 2:10because I never really went anywhere like that.
- 2:13But I got to my dad's bar and took a little bit of this little
- 2:16bit of that and made myself a little hip flask of of stuff and
- 2:20drinking in the line Wait, before I went to school, I got
- 2:23into the school, I think Michael Jackson's Billy Jam was playing
- 2:29and I just went straight on the dance floor.
- 2:31All my inhibitions were gone. I was dancing with the girls.
- 2:35It was all good. People coming up to me saying
- 2:38what are you doing here? And I said, well, I'm dancing
- 2:40and they'd never seen me ever in social setting like this.
- 2:44And funny thing was a couple of weeks later, I had a girlfriend.
- 2:47So I always related alcohol to good things happening in my
- 2:51life. And so that's how it went on for
- 2:56years and years and years. I didn't really have any bad
- 2:59times with alcohol. All the good times were with
- 3:01alcohol. You know, we used to go fishing
- 3:06and and camping and always travelling.
- 3:09Once the snow went here, went there, went there everywhere and
- 3:13it was always alcohol was involved and nothing bad really
- 3:17happened. Now a bit later on in in the
- 3:20pace I started getting injuries like I'd do funny things when I
- 3:24was drinking like get great ideas like going, you know,
- 3:27climb a few rocky outcrops, maybe even that a mountain or
- 3:33something maybe definitely go drink driving in the
- 3:38countryside. You can't get in much trouble
- 3:39doing that, can you? Mind you, every time I drove my
- 3:44car across the Murray River, we always crashed it somewhere.
- 3:47I always thought that my problem was not that I was drinking, but
- 3:51across the river. If I don't cross the river, I
- 3:53won't get into any trouble. How crazy is that?
- 3:57And so anyway, I had his great experiences drinking whatnot.
- 4:02And later on in life, I got married and tried to settle down
- 4:08and it didn't work out because by this stage, I like drinking.
- 4:13I like drinking a lot. And living life without alcohol
- 4:19wasn't easy. And so I'd go to work and I'd do
- 4:22my job and get the money and give the money to the missus and
- 4:26buy some food. And what little money I had
- 4:29leftover, I'd drink. And you know, I thought I was
- 4:33doing great. I loved drinking.
- 4:35I loved the way it made me feel the way I was.
- 4:38And then she got sick of my drinking and put her foot down
- 4:42and I had to stop. And I couldn't stop because I
- 4:47just kept thinking about it all the time.
- 4:49I just thought, how can I live life without it?
- 4:52And, you know, and I'd, I'd stop for a few days at a time and
- 4:55even a week maybe or something, but inevitably be able to put
- 4:59something else into my system to take the edge off.
- 5:01And I could never quite get clear of it.
- 5:04And one day I had this idea. I don't know where the idea came
- 5:08from, but I rang up directories and asked for a number for
- 5:12Alcoholics Anonymous. And I rang them up and talked to
- 5:15a fellow on the line and talked about how little I actually
- 5:18drank and didn't tell him the truth, of course.
- 5:21And he didn't seem to think I had an alcohol problem.
- 5:25And I just wanted her to him to tell my wife that, you know,
- 5:29I'll be right. But he wouldn't.
- 5:32He wouldn't say that. He said that I should probably
- 5:37go and have a look at a meeting or at a meeting and see if you
- 5:41know, if I went to a meeting maybe I could find out the
- 5:43truth. And so I went along to Brompton
- 5:46Beginners and I met 2 fellows at the door and they were very
- 5:51welcoming. They welcomed me in and you know
- 5:54showed showed me where to get a cup of coffee and whatever what
- 5:57have you. And I listened in on the
- 5:58meeting. There was a guest speaker.
- 6:00He shared his experience, strength and hope.
- 6:03And what experience he had was he was a professional cyclist
- 6:08and like, you know, he tried his best to make a career of it.
- 6:12And I myself was a like a sportsman.
- 6:15I loved playing sport. I played all kinds of different
- 6:18sports. I played volleyball from a
- 6:20little kid. I played ice hockey.
- 6:21I, you know, I was playing floorball and beach volleyball,
- 6:26Olympic twos and indoor volleyball and, you know, racing
- 6:31around me, bicycle and you name it, I was into it.
- 6:34But I could never quite cut it because I just couldn't get past
- 6:39my thinking. My thinking always led me back
- 6:43to drinking and here we were anyway.
- 6:46So I was coming a A and just coming to meetings.
- 6:50And that's all I was really doing.
- 6:52I was playing all these sports and coming to meetings and
- 6:55everyone kept saying keep coming back.
- 6:56And I was really happy to keep coming back because everywhere
- 6:59else in the world people were saying don't you ever come back
- 7:03here again. We don't want, we're around
- 7:04here. And sometimes I'd go back to
- 7:07these places where they'd told me not to come back and they'd
- 7:11say, we told you not to come back.
- 7:13And I said, well, when did you, when did you say that?
- 7:16And they said, well, that was just yesterday.
- 7:19And I go, jeez, I don't remember that.
- 7:20Well, the thing was that when I drink, I'm in blackout.
- 7:23I, I'm still performing, I'm still going through the actions,
- 7:27but I don't remember what I'm doing.
- 7:29And this went on and on and on. Anyway, so I'm in a a now and
- 7:34I'm coming to meetings. I'm not still not sure if I'm an
- 7:37alcoholic or not. There was a few ideas put to me
- 7:40that maybe I could give it a go. And one of the things was that I
- 7:44could go to a go to my nearest bar and have a drink and it and
- 7:49stop abruptly. See if I could just stop at one
- 7:51or two drinks. And if I could do that, then
- 7:55maybe I'm not an alcoholic. I could just get back to do what
- 7:59I was doing. And so after about 3 months in a
- 8:03A I, I just thought I'd do that. So I went out and gave it a
- 8:08crack and in the end I ended up drinking for another three
- 8:12months and I was pretty sick at this stage by now and I came
- 8:17back into a A again. Now I thought I'd do six months
- 8:21of a A and I should be cured now.
- 8:23And so I did six months of a, A and, and then I gave it another
- 8:28crack and I went out there and now it got worse my, even though
- 8:33I hadn't been drinking six months, my alcoholism's doing
- 8:36like, you know, exercising in the background and I was worse
- 8:40than ever. I, my alcohol consumption just
- 8:44went through the roof. I was making up for lost time
- 8:47now. I managed to lose my license
- 8:49this time around the first time and, and now I was bleeding.
- 8:55I started bleeding out of my mouth and other places and you
- 9:00know, I was getting really crook.
- 9:02I couldn't even have the morning drink.
- 9:04I was that sick. And so off to the doctor I went
- 9:08and told him what I was doing and you know, he gave me
- 9:12something some some things that I needed to take just to stop
- 9:16the bleeding. But I went back to a A and kept
- 9:21going to meetings and my mind was getting more cooked as time
- 9:26went on from just from consumption and alcohol.
- 9:30And it took me a long time to accept that there was this
- 9:33program and offer and that maybe I should do something about it.
- 9:37Now, I had a, had a sponsor and he was doing the best that he
- 9:42could with me, but I was belligerent.
- 9:44I wasn't willing to do anything. I wasn't even willing to read
- 9:48the big book. And eventually I changed
- 9:53sponsors and I changed sponsors a few times.
- 9:57And every time I am with a sponsor and he'll, they'll get
- 10:00me so far into it and I'll just pull up stumps and Nah, not
- 10:06doing that. It took the gift of desperation
- 10:11before I was willing to do anything real.
- 10:14I was stood at the turning point.
- 10:16I was willing to do anything. I asked for help.
- 10:19A sponsor was there. They helped me through the
- 10:21process of the steps. I worked through the prices of
- 10:25steps one step at a time. It wasn't that hard, really.
- 10:31In the end, I made a big molehill over the whole thing.
- 10:36I used to think that doing Step 4 was going to be the hardest
- 10:40thing ever. It wasn't that hard to write it
- 10:42all out. Once it got it all out on paper
- 10:46and my inventory had been done, the next thing was to tell
- 10:50someone. By this stage I was that broken
- 10:53enough that I was willing to let go of it all.
- 10:55I went, therefore I went to the person that was helping with it
- 10:59and I told them all about it and got rid of it.
- 11:05And all those secrets that I had of my past, of my past doings,
- 11:11of my fear, immature sex, immaturey, the resentments, I
- 11:18got them out. The relief was just basically
- 11:22immediate. I had this immediate relief of
- 11:25telling all this stuff. I went home and reflected on the
- 11:321st 5 propositions for an hour and then went back to a sponsor
- 11:37and we started working through the rest of the rest of the
- 11:40steps. Now when I got to, you know, my
- 11:46defects of character, I didn't think I had any.
- 11:50So I kind of like skimmed over it a bit and just got cracking
- 11:53onto my a list of people I was harmed.
- 11:56When I wrote down my list of people I harm, I wrote it down
- 12:00in three columns like it says. But the problem was I didn't
- 12:04know where most of the people were.
- 12:07I didn't know who these people were either.
- 12:09And I, I had like 3 columns and one column was all the people I
- 12:14was harmed and I didn't know who they were.
- 12:15Another column was all the people I had harmed and I knew
- 12:19who they were. And the third column was all the
- 12:22people I harmed and I have no idea where they are.
- 12:26So that was a bit tricky. And I went out to make my
- 12:31amends. I went around apologizing to
- 12:35people and, and I found a bunch of people that I could make
- 12:41amends to. So that's what I did.
- 12:42I went and saw these people out. I, I made amends wherever
- 12:49possible. I even got to the point of there
- 12:52was a bunch of people I owed money to and the money I owed
- 12:55them wasn't that much, but there was still money they owed them.
- 12:58And so therefore I, I even travelled overseas to pay off my
- 13:04phone financial debts to people that had borrowed money from
- 13:07from over there from years ago. The next thing I did was I went
- 13:15to meetings, I accepted this new way of life and I started
- 13:20working towards what my hype had power had in store for me.
- 13:28I started to live the program one day at a time, always
- 13:32working towards the greater good of IA as a whole.
- 13:36I was always looking for people that I could help in IA and
- 13:40outside of IA and, and continue doing this.
- 13:44Along the way, I was doing a lot of a, A camps and roundups and
- 13:49fellowship in general. And I cut myself a string of
- 13:55sponsees to work with. And you know, at one stage I
- 13:59didn't have any sponsees and one of my grand sponsor came up to
- 14:04me and says, how many have you got sponsor now?
- 14:07And I said, I haven't got anyone.
- 14:09No one's ever asked me. And he said to me, well where's
- 14:13it saying the big book that you had to wait for them to ask you.
- 14:16And so therefore I was about to ask someone if I could help them
- 14:21out. And along came my first Ponce
- 14:23and he says can you help me out? And I said OK, no worries.
- 14:28And we set a time in the morning that he could ring me before the
- 14:34start of the day and we could have a chat and about of about a
- 14:37day or two later, another person asked me and then another
- 14:41person, another person. Next thing you know, I'm doing
- 14:44getting 5 phone calls every morning from 5 different people
- 14:48and giving them the passing on the knowledge that I had from my
- 14:53sponsor on how to work through this process.
- 14:57And it got me really busy, got me really busy.
- 15:02I was still doing these tag alongs at the top end and
- 15:05everywhere else. We were going and meeting up
- 15:08with all the old timers and basically we're having a great
- 15:11time just staying sober. And but there was still
- 15:15something missing in my life. I just couldn't put my finger on
- 15:18it. And and and now long about that
- 15:22time I met my wife and when I met her, you know, it was like
- 15:32the whole world opened up again. Now, I would have never have met
- 15:36her if I hadn't have been sober And I'll I've been married to
- 15:40her now for eight years. And in that period of time,
- 15:44we've had ourselves a little baby boy.
- 15:46And, you know, I didn't have any purpose to life until I turned
- 15:51to a A and when I was in a AI kind of hit a wall and I need to
- 15:56ask for help again. And I got to through the steps
- 16:00and I got to the other end of that.
- 16:01I started working this every day of my life.
- 16:03And there was something else that I needed.
- 16:08God would provide for me if I just worked the program.
- 16:13And now I've got this beautiful family.
- 16:16You know, I've got my wife and my son and you know, I still
- 16:23haven't had a drink or a drug in all this time.
- 16:25I'm still living programmed best of my ability.
- 16:31It was how many years I've been sober now for since 8th of
- 16:42October, 8th, sorry, 8th of November 2002.
- 16:47So that makes me 22 years sober. Dennis has been asking me to do
- 16:54this recording. I don't know how long.
- 16:57I think he said it's been taking me four years to to work me into
- 17:01saying that. And so here we are.
- 17:04We're doing it now and I'm never so grateful I have the
- 17:08opportunity to be of service to AI and through throughout my
- 17:17recovery, we've had a lot of hiccups and whatnot.
- 17:20My, you know, my mother passed away and I had to work out, help
- 17:27out with the funeral and get all that sorted out.
- 17:30Few years later, my father passed away.
- 17:32I had to do all of that. I've been working on visas and
- 17:38this that and the other. But you know, all the stuff that
- 17:41happens in life is just there to, you know, either test you
- 17:45or, or or help you grow. And without IEII wouldn't have
- 17:51been able to cope with any of them.
- 17:53And it's been a hard journey, but also very rewarding journey
- 18:00to get to where I am today. And now I'm proud to say that
- 18:06I'm an alcoholic and a member of Alcoholics Synonymous.
- 18:09So thank you for letting me share.
- 18:15Thank you. Harry's good, good share mate.
- 18:19Plain language, Big book, a tool for reading Alcoholics
- 18:22Anonymous. How it works.
- 18:23It's very rare for someone to completely commit to the a a
- 18:26program and still fail. People who do not recover are
- 18:30the ones who can't or won't follow this simple program.
- 18:35They are usually people who simply cannot be honest with
- 18:37themselves. We don't meet a lot of people
- 18:41like this, but they do exist. It is not their fault they seem
- 18:46to have been born that way, but because they cannot be honest
- 18:50with themselves, they are unlikely to succeed in their
- 18:53recovery. There are also people who suffer
- 18:56from emotional and mental disorders and join a A to
- 18:59address their alcoholism. Many of them do recover if they
- 19:03are able to be honest along their journey.
- 19:06Many of the stories we share in this book describe experiences
- 19:10that we have had ourselves. We share stories about what we
- 19:14used to be like, what happened to us, and what our lives are
- 19:17like now. If you feel like we didn't want
- 19:20to stop drinking, then you are ready to get started.
- 19:24You are ready to take these steps toward recovery.
- 19:27When we started, some of those first steps scared us.
- 19:31We thought we could find an easier way, but we could not.
- 19:36Since we know this now from our own experiences, we're asking
- 19:40you to be fearless and thorough from the start.
- 19:43Some of us tried to keep our old ideas and they just held us
- 19:46back. Until we let go of those ideas,
- 19:50we were unable to make progress. Remember that we are dealing
- 19:54with the disease. Alcoholism is a confusing and
- 19:58powerful condition that is unlike anything else in the
- 20:01world. Alcohol is extremely
- 20:03complicated, tricky and difficult.
- 20:07It seems to control and punish people who are addicted to it
- 20:11without help. Beating alcoholism is too much
- 20:14for one person to handle. We all need guidance from God,
- 20:18support from a higher power, and we need to ask for that support
- 20:22with full and open hearts. We stand at a turning point.
- 20:27We asked for God's protection and care with all the honesty we
- 20:31have. The 12 steps here are the steps
- 20:34we took which are suggested as a program of recovery.
- 20:37One, we admitted we were powerless over alcohol, that our
- 20:40lives had become unmanageable. 2 came to believe that a power
- 20:44greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. 3 made a
- 20:49decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of
- 20:52God as we understood him. Four, made a searching in
- 20:56fearless moral inventory of ourselves. 5 admitted to God, to
- 21:01ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our
- 21:04ROMs. Six were entirely ready to have God remove all these
- 21:08defects of character. 7 humbly asked Him to remove our
- 21:13shortcomings. 8 made a list of all persons we had harmed and
- 21:18became willing to make amends to them all.
- 21:21Nine made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except
- 21:25when to do so would injure them or others. 10 continued to take
- 21:29personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted
- 21:32it. 11 sought through prayer and meditation to improve our
- 21:37conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for
- 21:40knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. 12
- 21:45Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we
- 21:48tried to carry this message to Alcoholics and to practice these
- 21:52principles in all our affairs. If this is your first time
- 21:56reading through these steps, they may seem difficult or even
- 22:00impossible. Do not be discouraged, no one
- 22:05has ever followed these principles perfectly.
- 22:08We are not Saints, we are simply people who are trying to grow
- 22:13both spiritually and personally. These ideas are here to guide
- 22:17our progress, and our goal is spiritual progress, not
- 22:21spiritual perfection. In chapter 4, we shared a
- 22:25description of Alcoholics who do not believe in God.
- 22:29Combined with that we believe the stories of our experiences
- 22:32as a members all boiled down to three simple ideas.
- 22:36A That we were Alcoholics and could not manage our own lives.
- 22:40B That no human power could have stopped or changed our
- 22:43alcoholism. C That God could and would help
- 22:47us if we tried to find God. We have local meetings for the
- 22:52full week in the local area. Monday's Gala meeting at 8:00,
