- 0:00Good morning and welcome with Espresso with Max.
- 0:06Theme of the day is wrecking or racing.
- 0:12And based on what I saw in Martinsville this week, what I
- 0:23saw on Saturday, that's exactly what the NASCAR guys hates.
- 0:32Because one thing is bumping, moving, rubbing when you
- 0:44actually have a real shot about winning.
- 0:48Another thing is intentionally wrecking someone.
- 0:55Sammy Smith on Saturday just decided that that he was going
- 1:04to wreck the other guy and that that's really doesn't go down
- 1:11very well, especially with the senior people in NASCAR.
- 1:13Because when I showed up there, they told me very clearly that
- 1:20anyone could punt you off every day, every lap of every race.
- 1:28But that's not the way that they do it.
- 1:33And I can see why there is a huge outrage from the senior
- 1:38driver because they don't want to be seen like a bunch of
- 1:45hillbillies. You know, they go out there and
- 1:47wreck each other and and I think that it's very well respected,
- 1:55you know, and again, let me take a step back on this.
- 1:58And I know Sammy Jones, he's sorry.
- 2:03I know Sammy Smith, he's a really good kid.
- 2:07You know, he's and I'm sure, you know, even listening from when
- 2:16he was after the post race interview, he was not very proud
- 2:21of what he did. You know, I'm sure that that
- 2:24him, you know, being at home now thinking about it, he might be
- 2:30yeah, I overdid it. And so let's start with talking
- 2:36that these guys are still kids. They're still learning.
- 2:38So, you know, let's not crucify them because they have a career
- 2:43ahead of them. They will learn from this, you
- 2:46know, and the sport will handle itself.
- 2:50It's not about part the guy, give him a punishment.
- 2:57It's not about that. I'm sure that now the fellow
- 3:01racer, they will know how to race him.
- 3:04And you know, as I know like how NASCAR works, there will be a
- 3:08bunch of guys that from time to time they will move him around
- 3:11and they will remind him that what he did on Saturday, that's
- 3:16not the way to do it. So I will say the NASCAR, stay
- 3:20away from it because otherwise you set the precedent that is
- 3:25going to be very, very subjective.
- 3:29You know where, so where do you draw the line?
- 3:33You know how far you need to be to hit someone.
- 3:37Is this, you know, how do you intervene in a way that you can
- 3:46be repeatable? You can, you know, if you, if
- 3:52you, if you're going to punish or give a penalty to Samuel
- 3:57Smith for this, Are you going to do the exact same things for the
- 4:00Daytona 500? Are you going to do the exact
- 4:03same things for other situations?
- 4:06So, you know, I, I, if I would be the sanctioning body, I would
- 4:09stay away from this, you know, and I will let the, the racing
- 4:13community taking care of it step by step.
- 4:17Again, not a very good episode, not as not what NASCAR wanted
- 4:21to. I mean, not what I think the
- 4:24soccer is, but there are some justification at the end of the
- 4:28day, you know, their kids, they're learning.
- 4:31The part I didn't really like at all is that if it was enough for
- 4:37someone just to flip you off under under yellow to piss you
- 4:45off that much, maybe need to think about it, need to think
- 4:49how you can control your emotion.
- 4:50How can you be better? Because I mean, if you have to
- 4:56wreck someone that hard only because he flipped you off or
- 5:02there's a bit of a hard feeling through the through the season,
- 5:06I don't know, you know, I don't know.
- 5:09I think that's the way too much. So I understand the range of the
- 5:13senior driver and but at the same time, to all of you guys
- 5:16out there, don't judge so much. I mean, you know, you don't know
- 5:21what it takes to be sitting in the car to win a race.
- 5:24So sometimes we all make mistakes.
- 5:28And I'm sure Sammy is is going to regret, you know, what he did
- 5:35and he was not a good character. Judgement and time will time
- 5:45will time will say. You know, the part that really
- 5:48sucks is that I understand why the senior guys get upset
- 5:53because most of us came up from working really hard, working on
- 5:59the cars and some of these younger generation, you know, I
- 6:05don't know much about, you know, Yeah, I if the level of respect
- 6:13towards their equipment, the level of respect towards other
- 6:15people and wrecking hundreds of thousands of dollars doesn't
- 6:20show much respect. And I think because the fact
- 6:27that the respect towards what it takes to get there.
- 6:33And unfortunately, there's another chapter that I want to
- 6:38touch base in the future of the suffering that it takes to get
- 6:45there versus the money that it takes to get there.
- 6:50And what creator, the difference that creator inside as a
- 6:55character, as a person. So Saturday, yeah, was a
- 7:00disgrace, was really bad. Was that's not what I consider
- 7:07NASCAR racing. The justification were not good.
- 7:14At least I would have liked to see some people, you know,
- 7:18NASCAR style in pit lane beating each other up a little bit, a
- 7:22little bit of a bit of a show, but was not even that.
- 7:25So none of the none of the above were good personally, but at the
- 7:31same time let the sport handle itself and to the next.
- 7:38You guys have a great day. Espresso with Max and to the
- 7:47next.
