- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Unscripted Coming at You, episode number forty one, and this
- 0:23Speaker 1: is a good one today. Bruce Bennett, legendary photographer the NHL,
- 0:26Speaker 1: has some great stories. Almost fifty years he's been documenting
- 0:29Speaker 1: in the great sport of hockey. I'll tell us his
- 0:31Speaker 1: favorite athlete to photograph and the challenges of being a
- 0:34Speaker 1: photographer after all these years, labor pieces here again, that's
- 0:37Speaker 1: great news for hockey as we will continue uninterrupted for
- 0:40Speaker 1: a while. And Plus, the final big names du get
- 0:42Speaker 1: signed is Nikolai Eeler's as I've been saying to the
- 0:44Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes. You begin though. Also, Cinephile is a book
- 0:48Speaker 1: coming out. Gotta promote that, right, This is the best
- 0:50Speaker 1: part of writing the book, Tall as you write the book.
- 0:52Speaker 1: The worst part is the nause hitting self promotion. I'll
- 0:54Speaker 1: tell my book coming in August twenty sixth. However, JD's
- 0:57Speaker 1: but to go on a dream trip to Italy. How
- 0:59Speaker 1: about that, Buddy, bags are packed.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Right to rock or what my bags are packed? I'm
- 1:04Speaker 2: ready to go. I'm standing here outside yo, do yeah?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Going on the honeymoon a year and a half late
- 1:12Speaker 2: to Italy with the wife. So we're leaving in about
- 1:14Speaker 2: a week and can't wait. We're gonna it's we looked
- 1:17Speaker 2: at our itinerary today and we're like, we did not
- 1:20Speaker 2: leave an ounce of room to to enjoy or doing it.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We're just we're just humming around. I mean, I travel,
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm I like extreme traveling. I just like, let's just
- 1:31Speaker 2: get there, get around, and you know, take a lay
- 1:33Speaker 2: of the land. Because we once went to I think
- 1:35Speaker 2: Kawahi early in our relationship and we both were like
- 1:39Speaker 2: under the impression that we want to go lay on
- 1:41Speaker 2: a beach. So we like laid on the beach and
- 1:43Speaker 2: it was like twenty minutes and we like looked at
- 1:44Speaker 2: each other and like is that it? Like we get
- 1:47Speaker 2: in Hawaii, so we're gonna do a lot of sight seeing.
- 1:49Speaker 2: We're gonna do a lot of through Tuscany, a little
- 1:52Speaker 2: bit of wine, a little bit of truffles, can enjoy ourselves.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah. I generally find one day relax, one day get
- 1:58Speaker 3: after it.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I got to your pointment the beach thing is, it's
- 2:00Speaker 1: like if you're just sitting there doing nothing all week,
- 2:02Speaker 1: like this.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Is I mean, we can find a beach in Jersey,
- 2:05Speaker 2: somewhere in the Jersey shore right filled with trash and broken.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Dreams to Bruce by the Way episode in two weeks,
- 2:14Speaker 1: Wall jd is gone. There will be every other week
- 2:16Speaker 1: until closer to the start of the season. That's at
- 2:18Speaker 1: least talas hope. But we're gonna try to get a
- 2:20Speaker 1: new contract to there some point as well, so we'll see.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that is the important thing. Mage, Sure Daddy, Daddy
- 2:27Speaker 2: and Uncle Uncle av get paid here.
- 2:30Speaker 3: One hundred percent. Speaking again paid.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Hey, let us remember the Carolina Hurricanes nikolaike Eelers we
- 2:35Speaker 1: spoke with this last week in NHL in scripted The
- 2:37Speaker 1: last Big Damer will fall six years, fifty one million dollars.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Elliott Friedman report.
- 2:41Speaker 1: The Red Wings were interested, but the Dane wouldn't even
- 2:44Speaker 1: meet with them joining a talented Hurricanes team. So you
- 2:47Speaker 1: get Keantre Miller from the Rangers last time to an
- 2:49Speaker 1: eight year, sixty million dollar contract. Logan Stank covid the
- 2:53Speaker 1: Stank Daddy eight years forty eight million dollars. The Carolina
- 2:56Speaker 1: Hurricanes gdy for years have been played with the fact
- 2:59Speaker 1: they don't have a superstar player. They don't have that
- 3:01Speaker 1: big name. Obviously, we know what happened with Ranton and
- 3:04Speaker 1: being burned there. Now we've got Eelers, we got Miller,
- 3:06Speaker 1: we got Stank Daddy. How you feel about Rod Brindemore's.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Team, I mean better than Steve Eiserman's team, that's for sure.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Nobody wants to go play in Detroit. I don't know
- 3:14Speaker 2: what the hell's going on there, but yeah, I mean
- 3:17Speaker 2: Eelers was I think ended up becoming the biggest name
- 3:21Speaker 2: on the board because a lot of those top guys
- 3:23Speaker 2: went very fast, and I think that was to his benefit.
- 3:26Speaker 2: He got to choose. I mean, I'm interested in the choice,
- 3:29Speaker 2: but it was one of the I think eight or
- 3:33Speaker 2: nine teams that I said he'd go to. So I
- 3:35Speaker 2: can't really say that I'm demercial Damas because I said
- 3:38Speaker 2: about every single team, but I did say Carolinas one
- 3:41Speaker 2: of them. I think he's a good piece. I think
- 3:43Speaker 2: there he fits well in terms of his speed and
- 3:46Speaker 2: the way he likes to play a straight line game.
- 3:49Speaker 2: He can add some skill, some offense. They have another
- 3:52Speaker 2: kind of game breaking type player on their team that
- 3:54Speaker 2: they needed. So you got Stank Ofvin, you got Elers.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know this is a team that I still think
- 3:59Speaker 2: all roads lead through the Florida Panthers. But this team
- 4:02Speaker 2: with ca Andre Miller and Nikole, they have gotten a
- 4:05Speaker 2: lot better and I think they are going to be
- 4:07Speaker 2: a very different looking hockey team. And if Rod brendanmore
- 4:11Speaker 2: can get the most out of Candre Miller on the
- 4:13Speaker 2: back end, because they know they lost a few players
- 4:15Speaker 2: back there, but if he can get the most out
- 4:17Speaker 2: of Candre Miller, I mean, we still all believe and
- 4:20Speaker 2: I think you guys would agree with me that you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: Candre Miller's ceiling is very high, and if he decides
- 4:26Speaker 2: to play hockey the way that we all know he can,
- 4:28Speaker 2: I think he's going to be a force. So he's
- 4:30Speaker 2: going to really help this team if he can do that.
- 4:32Speaker 2: If he can't, obviously, well you know it's gonna happen.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They're just going to do the same thing they've done
- 4:36Speaker 2: every year. But yeah, good on Nikola. Eeler's picking the
- 4:39Speaker 2: team that you know was maybe a little bit off
- 4:41Speaker 2: the beaten path, but I think he's a great fit
- 4:43Speaker 2: for him.
- 4:44Speaker 3: How much does it hurt the Jets losing Elers?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I mean it's they tried to, you know, fix it
- 4:50Speaker 2: with Tanner Pearson and Gustav Nyquist. But does it. I
- 4:55Speaker 2: think their system is still good enough and their decoor
- 4:59Speaker 2: is going to be good enough where they can sustain that,
- 5:01Speaker 2: and they also have Connor Hellbucks. You're going to make
- 5:03Speaker 2: the playoffs. They still have cap space. You look, they're
- 5:06Speaker 2: bringing Jonathan Tave so that's a kind of a swing
- 5:09Speaker 2: to see if Taser can come in and really impact
- 5:12Speaker 2: this team. But I don't know. I mean, listen, they
- 5:14Speaker 2: still got their top line in place. This is going
- 5:16Speaker 2: to be a team that does very well in the
- 5:21Speaker 2: central and Connor Hellbook's going to play another sixty to
- 5:24Speaker 2: sixty five games and be very good and be very
- 5:28Speaker 2: good around that's around their defensive style system that's very
- 5:32Speaker 2: tight and kind of protects him. So I think I'm
- 5:36Speaker 2: not worried about this team at all, and I think
- 5:39Speaker 2: they'll still be in I don't think this is a
- 5:41Speaker 2: make or break kind of player to lose, as much
- 5:44Speaker 2: as people think that it might be. I just think
- 5:47Speaker 2: Winnipeg's a very good team and a very deep team.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Tal has got a little scoop hero as we can
- 5:52Speaker 1: talk a little more about tapes doing a documentary like
- 5:54Speaker 1: Gabriel Landeskog.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Is that right, Tal, that's the scoop.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Can't reveal my sources, but yeah, I mean, I think
- 6:00Speaker 4: that's the thing for a lot of players, especially the
- 6:02Speaker 4: ones like Jonathan Taze who haven't interesting story to tell.
- 6:05Speaker 4: It sounds like he will have a crew around him
- 6:08Speaker 4: sort of documenting his return to the game and his
- 6:11Speaker 4: return to his hometown team.
- 6:15Speaker 2: TAL two scoops Tal two scoops of Gelato for Tal. Yeah,
- 6:21Speaker 2: I had heard kind of rumblings that he was Netflix
- 6:25Speaker 2: was on board, and then they were trying to sell
- 6:27Speaker 2: to Netflix, and then that didn't work and then Amazon.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So I'm glad he got it. He's got an interest.
- 6:33Speaker 2: He's an interesting cat, that's for sure. I've I've hung
- 6:35Speaker 2: out with him a little bit. He lives in Scottsdale
- 6:38Speaker 2: in this area, so I've kind of I've I've been
- 6:41Speaker 2: boating with him crazy enough. And he's a nice guy,
- 6:44Speaker 2: different bird, different different human.
- 6:46Speaker 3: What do you mean about that?
- 6:47Speaker 2: He's just like, he's just very analytical. He's very you know,
- 6:52Speaker 2: you sees the deep thinker. Some would call it an
- 6:54Speaker 2: overthinker at times, but he's very like, he's very uh
- 6:58Speaker 2: and very introspective. So you know, a lot of a
- 7:02Speaker 2: lot of things that you don't necessarily expect up certain
- 7:05Speaker 2: hockey players. But you know, that's why he went and
- 7:08Speaker 2: got all this really out of the box treatment for
- 7:11Speaker 2: his ailments, and you know, went over to India and
- 7:14Speaker 2: did all sorts of crazy stuff and just he's just searching.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And I think that's not a bad thing. I think
- 7:20Speaker 2: it's a good thing for somebody like him that had
- 7:23Speaker 2: so much success and is now trying to maybe find
- 7:26Speaker 2: a different avenue back into the NHL and find a
- 7:29Speaker 2: different way to perform and you know, perform at his
- 7:33Speaker 2: level that he's accustomed to, which is the highest level possible.
- 7:36Speaker 3: That's well said, he missed the bast two seasons very solid.
- 7:39Speaker 2: That was well, he said, No, well.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I would go back.
- 7:43Speaker 4: I'd also add quickly, the guy's revered in Winnipeg. I mean,
- 7:46Speaker 4: I feel like not enough hasn't been made of that.
- 7:49Speaker 4: I was actually there at his Cup day when he
- 7:52Speaker 4: brought the cup there in twenty thirteen to the arena
- 7:55Speaker 4: with his name on it, and literally the whole city
- 7:58Speaker 4: came out to see this guy with the cup. It
- 8:00Speaker 4: was it was it was a pretty special moment for
- 8:02Speaker 4: the city of Winnipeg. I think him being on ice
- 8:04Speaker 4: wearing a Jets jersey is going to be huge for
- 8:06Speaker 4: that team.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Tell how did how did you get in there?
- 8:11Speaker 4: I was at NHL dot Com at the time. I
- 8:13Speaker 4: was actually there. Yeah, legit, Yeah, tell us about it.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Tell us about it.
- 8:21Speaker 3: How you were a party crashing?
- 8:22Speaker 4: Let's no, no, I was there covering for NHL dot Com.
- 8:26Speaker 4: The family was there, the whole city was there. There
- 8:29Speaker 4: was a cop there who did not think I was
- 8:30Speaker 4: legit and kept asking me what I was doing there,
- 8:32Speaker 4: honestly because the stas having me around there for some reason.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I didn't have the stash back then, so maybe the
- 8:37Speaker 4: stash would have helped, but I needed They unveiled this
- 8:42Speaker 4: huge mural on the side of the building of Taves
- 8:45Speaker 4: when he brought the cup there and the picture the
- 8:48Speaker 4: mural didn't look a ton like him, but it was cool.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It was nice. He had kind of like a pig
- 8:54Speaker 2: nose in the mural. What is that? What is that?
- 8:57Speaker 2: What the murals and the statues.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Nowadays, there's Dwayne Wade to go. He doesn't look like
- 9:02Speaker 3: Dwayne Waite.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Oh my god, that.
- 9:04Speaker 4: The Dwayne Wade statue feel to the mural but it
- 9:07Speaker 4: was huge. It was the whole side of like the building,
- 9:10Speaker 4: so it was very cool. And you know, he did
- 9:12Speaker 4: the whole thing where he had the private party, took
- 9:14Speaker 4: it to the arena, took it to the Children's hospital, like,
- 9:17Speaker 4: he did the whole thing all day, all around town.
- 9:19Speaker 3: It was pretty cool.
- 9:21Speaker 4: You know, usually those a lot of guys bring it
- 9:23Speaker 4: to like a small town like where the whole community
- 9:25Speaker 4: comes out. But that's like, you know, five hundred people.
- 9:28Speaker 4: If you get the whole city of Winnipeg coming out
- 9:30Speaker 4: for you and you're not even playing for the Jets,
- 9:33Speaker 4: you know, that's pretty impressive.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And you could tell he had done it.
- 9:36Speaker 4: He'd won the Cup before by that point, but you
- 9:38Speaker 4: could tell it still meant a lot for him to
- 9:40Speaker 4: bring it out to that community.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Coming out of the party, Hills partied up at Earlstart Winnipeg.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Good stuff. There's Jatha tapes. Hepe thing get done with Winnipeg.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Happy trails to JD's former buddy, not former buddy, former
- 9:52Speaker 1: playing partner Mark Edward Laski's still friends of them. Sure
- 9:55Speaker 1: Shark's buying up the veteran defenseman two weeks ago after
- 9:58Speaker 1: nineteen seasons with the team tough ending to a great
- 10:00Speaker 1: run for the pickleman in San lel say. We mentioned
- 10:03Speaker 1: this though because JD's thoughts on the teamMy covers the Sharks,
- 10:06Speaker 1: Mario Ferraro, Timothy Liligrin, Shakiir Mohammadulan who Tyler to fully
- 10:10Speaker 1: shout out on the show. Vincent Deharney just signed Nick
- 10:13Speaker 1: Letty to meet your orlof John Klingbrook. Sam Dickinson drafted
- 10:16Speaker 1: eleventh overall last year, could get a look look at
- 10:18Speaker 1: Kegnoni let All rookie defenseman scoring the HL last season.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Talk to me about the Sharks defense right now, JD.
- 10:25Speaker 2: A lot of lefties out there, but I think there's
- 10:29Speaker 2: some trade pieces. But yeah, they you know, I think
- 10:33Speaker 2: I was quietly texting with Tafoley at the deadline, saying, listen,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you guys need to get to the cap floor. I'll
- 10:39Speaker 2: take seven to fifty. And the true story, I texted
- 10:43Speaker 2: the GM too, and I said, I said, if you
- 10:47Speaker 2: let me get in shape for three four months, uh,
- 10:49Speaker 2: just sign me to seven to fifty. I'll come be
- 10:51Speaker 2: like a player coach and maybe get in a game
- 10:54Speaker 2: or two, but I'll just you know, I'll fill a
- 10:56Speaker 2: roster spot because you need that.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, but they did a good job.
- 10:59Speaker 2: You know, they probably looked at that and said maybe
- 11:01Speaker 2: and then said no, we gotta do some real work.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And they did.
- 11:03Speaker 1: They think they got some really good pieces. And I
- 11:06Speaker 1: just picture the white board. They go, okay, here's planet
- 11:08Speaker 1: plant me Plants is signed to Merse. Okay, so that
- 11:10Speaker 1: isn't it's.
- 11:11Speaker 2: There, it's open. I look good, my body's great, tight.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But no, I think get nick Lettie, guy that can skate,
- 11:17Speaker 2: smooth skating defenseman. I think Sam Dickinson is going to
- 11:21Speaker 2: be very good. He's he's a he's another smooth skating defenseman,
- 11:25Speaker 2: very big, very offensively minded. He's going to be playing
- 11:28Speaker 2: this year for sure. So yeah, there's there's there's pieces there.
- 11:32Speaker 2: You know. You bring in Dimitriorlov, which that was kind
- 11:35Speaker 2: of a surprise signing too. To me. I was like,
- 11:37Speaker 2: oh wow, he came here.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Uh.
- 11:39Speaker 2: And I just think maybe the the market wasn't super
- 11:44Speaker 2: large for him, especially after you know recency bias. You
- 11:47Speaker 2: look at the playoffs he had against Florida and he
- 11:50Speaker 2: kind of got exposed, and I feel like that might
- 11:52Speaker 2: have hurt him, even though he had a really good season.
- 11:55Speaker 2: So he goes to San Jose. I mean, you got
- 11:57Speaker 2: a really good They got a better decour than people think.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And up front they're gonna be very dynamic. It's it's
- 12:02Speaker 2: gonna be an interesting year. They're gonna do better this year.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And I played golf with Tifolio and San Jose a
- 12:07Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago, and I was just like, listen,
- 12:09Speaker 2: it's it's not about making the playoffs this year for them.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You have to show improvement. It's like what they wanted
- 12:15Speaker 2: Chicago to do last year but didn't do. It's like
- 12:18Speaker 2: you need to maybe be you know, a win for
- 12:22Speaker 2: this team is being ten points outside the playoffs. That's
- 12:24Speaker 2: the win. You want to be ten points. You want
- 12:27Speaker 2: to be kind of in the hunt, but you're out
- 12:29Speaker 2: of it. But you're you know, you're there, Like you're
- 12:32Speaker 2: there and you've shown that you've taken a step forward.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You cannot be and they cannot accept being basement dwellers
- 12:37Speaker 2: once again. That is just a non negotiable. And I
- 12:40Speaker 2: just think if they do that then again and then
- 12:42Speaker 2: you're in trouble again. But I think they've taken all
- 12:45Speaker 2: the right steps and now it's kind of on the players.
- 12:48Speaker 1: See what happens in San Jose. A couple more topics
- 12:50Speaker 1: where we get to Bruce Bennet. Big prospect news is
- 12:52Speaker 1: Gavin McKenna, presumed top pick next Simmer's draft, leaving Canada
- 12:55Speaker 1: to play college hockey for Penn State.
- 12:57Speaker 3: You talked to us before JD recruiting coup.
- 12:59Speaker 1: For the Nitney Lions may have the frozen fourth this
- 13:01Speaker 1: year they lost to Boston University, but that's a huge
- 13:03Speaker 1: precedent now allowing Canadian junior hockey players to go play
- 13:06Speaker 1: US college hockey. McKenna had a huge season, doesn't turn
- 13:09Speaker 1: eighteen until December, First team All Star, Canadian Junior Hockey CHL,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Player of the Year. I want a town on the
- 13:15Speaker 1: Western Hockey League with medicine hat as well as the
- 13:17Speaker 1: Helnka Under eighteen.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Tournament for Canada. So Sky's limit for McKenna.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But greater point to me for you is what does
- 13:23Speaker 1: this mean now kids playing junior hockey?
- 13:25Speaker 3: No, I'll going to college. Well, I tell the.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Story, and I told it yesterday on Overdrive, which is
- 13:33Speaker 2: a Toronto radio show, and they asked me about this
- 13:35Speaker 2: and I said, when I was sixteen, I was drafted
- 13:38Speaker 2: to the Monks and Wildcats. I had a full ride
- 13:42Speaker 2: to go to Saint John's in New Hampshire prep school,
- 13:46Speaker 2: had a full ride everything. I was ready to go.
- 13:49Speaker 2: One essay of the of the year for them, amazing essay,
- 13:52Speaker 2: just you know, just pat myself on the back. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 2: I got some I got. I got a little tinge
- 13:59Speaker 2: in there of writing it is the touch touch of
- 14:01Speaker 2: the Shakespeare's nice but no, so I I was about
- 14:04Speaker 2: to go, and you were allowed back then to go
- 14:07Speaker 2: for two days to training camp in junior in junior
- 14:12Speaker 2: hockey in Canada, and after that you lose a year
- 14:14Speaker 2: of eligibility. So I go for the two days. I
- 14:18Speaker 2: made the tough decision. I was like, do I go
- 14:20Speaker 2: to Moncton and try this? Because I wasn't expecting to
- 14:22Speaker 2: get drafted, and you know, the guy that drafted me
- 14:25Speaker 2: was like, you know, we really want you to come.
- 14:26Speaker 2: We think you have a good opportunity. So I went there.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Didn't really have NHL in my mind. I wanted to
- 14:31Speaker 2: go to Saint Thomas and go to Harvard. That was
- 14:33Speaker 2: my as funny as that sounds, that's what I wanted
- 14:36Speaker 2: to do. So I ended up going to Monk to
- 14:39Speaker 2: New Brunswick, I go through the two days, I'm like, oh,
- 14:42Speaker 2: this is you know, it's been fun. I had a
- 14:44Speaker 2: good camp and getting ready to leave, getting ready to
- 14:46Speaker 2: pack my bag, and the coach calls me and says, hey,
- 14:48Speaker 2: you have a chance to make the team. So he's like,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you have to make the decision if you want to
- 14:52Speaker 2: stay or not. And I was like, man, do I
- 14:55Speaker 2: All of a sudden, I was like, what this is wild?
- 14:57Speaker 2: Like this is probably this is the only avenue to
- 14:59Speaker 2: the NHL of those days, like this is you know,
- 15:02Speaker 2: I didn't know a young kid from from you know, Montreal.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I was like, this is you play in junior hockey
- 15:08Speaker 2: to make the NHL. You don't play and you don't
- 15:10Speaker 2: go play prep school in college. And that was kind
- 15:12Speaker 2: of unheard of, and it was a longer road. So
- 15:15Speaker 2: I called my parents and decided to stay and then
- 15:17Speaker 2: end up losing eligibility but you know it and then
- 15:21Speaker 2: blowing my knee out that you were just hilarious. So
- 15:23Speaker 2: but it all worked out for me. But what I
- 15:26Speaker 2: get to say is like kids can now go at sixteen,
- 15:29Speaker 2: play junior for two years and then go play college.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I think it's a great thing for the for the sport.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I think it's a great thing for junior hockey in Canada.
- 15:37Speaker 2: If they do it right, I think they're gonna have
- 15:38Speaker 2: a younger league, but it's gonna be you're gonna mitigate
- 15:42Speaker 2: having those you know, nineteen twenty year olds that are
- 15:44Speaker 2: kind of done and not getting drafted and just kind
- 15:48Speaker 2: of hanging around. And you know, now those guys love
- 15:52Speaker 2: the opportunity to go to college and university in the
- 15:54Speaker 2: US or stay in Canada and go to college early
- 15:57Speaker 2: and bounce back and forth. So I think it's a
- 15:59Speaker 2: really good thing. I think McKenna go into Penn State.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I mean, that's just gonna change the culture of Penn
- 16:04Speaker 2: State hockey forever. Like this is just so enormous, so huge.
- 16:09Speaker 2: This will go down in the annals of hockey history.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Is like one of those you know, altering moments that really,
- 16:17Speaker 2: you know, not a ware were you moment, but it's
- 16:19Speaker 2: gonna shape the way that you know, teams go after
- 16:23Speaker 2: and university teams go after players and how they develop them.
- 16:25Speaker 2: So I think it's it's very good. I'm I'm a
- 16:28Speaker 2: big proponent of this. I really much enjoy it, and
- 16:32Speaker 2: uh I hope that it benefits Canadian hockey as much
- 16:36Speaker 2: as it's gonna benefit university.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I just look to shut up to the canals of
- 16:40Speaker 3: hockey history.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I want to say the anals, that's there was a
- 16:43Speaker 2: US politician recent the anals history always a little dice
- 16:48Speaker 2: when you see that coming up on the annals anals,
- 16:50Speaker 2: we're gonn nail this one.
- 16:51Speaker 3: See what happens there?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Anal taking up the ass might be U s h
- 16:58Speaker 1: L now the same one. More thought for the oil
- 17:01Speaker 1: there's a big move Tuesday, your boy Isaac Howard from
- 17:05Speaker 1: the Tampa Lighting Samuel rilly So signs an entry level
- 17:08Speaker 1: deal to Oilers to finishing a standout junior season at
- 17:10Speaker 1: Michigan State, won the Hoby Baker Top Player in College hockey.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I know we wanted more from the Oilers, especially their
- 17:16Speaker 1: goal to day, but how big a move is this one?
- 17:19Speaker 2: Well, apparently like the way Isaac Carrotter is treated, he
- 17:22Speaker 2: did not like it the way he was treated by Tampa,
- 17:24Speaker 2: decides he wants to go to Edmonton. I think this
- 17:29Speaker 2: is a guy that they've been targeting for a little bit,
- 17:31Speaker 2: and I think it's a guy that wanted to come here.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I think it's one of those plug and play young players,
- 17:37Speaker 2: you know, like a you know, high you know, a
- 17:39Speaker 2: high scoring, high offensive, very skilled player that they need
- 17:44Speaker 2: on their top six right now. And I just think
- 17:46Speaker 2: he's one of those guys that can drop in and
- 17:49Speaker 2: be productive. How productive, I don't know, but this is
- 17:51Speaker 2: kind of one of those things with junior versus college
- 17:54Speaker 2: is he's a little bit older and he's gonna be
- 17:57Speaker 2: able to step in. How old is he right now?
- 17:59Speaker 2: Exactly what is he? Twenty one? From a researchers on it,
- 18:04Speaker 2: But yeah, it's it's one of those things that I
- 18:07Speaker 2: think they needed it, and it's they need a young
- 18:09Speaker 2: guy that's on a lower base salary that can come
- 18:12Speaker 2: in and produce like the Dylan Holloways and Ryan McCloud's
- 18:16Speaker 2: that they had once. They need that again in the
- 18:18Speaker 2: need to kind of refill their their their buckets.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I'm just surprised you said that he wasn't pleased with Tampa.
- 18:24Speaker 1: To be Tampa only feels like a first one, first
- 18:26Speaker 1: class organizations.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I'm surprised that those.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Certain teams, if you told me, wasn't treated well by
- 18:30Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, I can see that, but Tampa, Like,
- 18:32Speaker 1: I'm surprised he wasn't pleased with it.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Tal Confirmation twenty.
- 18:34Speaker 2: One, twenty one. I got it right, man, I'm I'm
- 18:37Speaker 2: pretty hot today.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Well, listen, you're about to go to Italy honeymoon a
- 18:40Speaker 1: year and a half later. I love the fact you
- 18:41Speaker 1: proposed in Egypt. Now honeymoon in Italy. I mean, that's
- 18:43Speaker 1: a pretty good counterplay. And a trip to Hawaii along
- 18:46Speaker 1: the way that was.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I mean, we've been to Budapeste together, We've been to Germany,
- 18:52Speaker 2: been to San Sebastian, Spain. We've been Iceland.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Iceland amazing.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I love Iceland. I'd put my I'd go live there tomorrow.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Do you know what? Iceland? They release all the sheep
- 19:05Speaker 2: and like all like for most of the year because
- 19:09Speaker 2: there's no predators there. And then there's like a two
- 19:12Speaker 2: week kind of celebration where everybody goes and finds the sheep,
- 19:16Speaker 2: finds their sheep and slaughter. No, they just bring them
- 19:20Speaker 2: back to shear them. They got to share him. But
- 19:24Speaker 2: can you imagine, can you imagine, like you know, you know, Sammy,
- 19:27Speaker 2: the sheep's all the way across across island, Like if
- 19:32Speaker 2: he's seen Sammy, he's like he's all the way on
- 19:34Speaker 2: the other side of the islands, a.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Little sheep Iceland has a lot of greenery and Greenland
- 19:40Speaker 1: has a lot more ice.
- 19:41Speaker 3: That's something you know, you learn as a kid. You go,
- 19:43Speaker 3: is that right, mcka, go to ice the greenery, So
- 19:45Speaker 3: don't blow your mind.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a stute. That was my load contribution.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Good news is Bruce Bennett's gonna be unbelievable.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Ace photographer for the NHL for so many years.
- 19:56Speaker 1: He'll tell you his favorite player to photograph and his
- 19:58Speaker 1: favorite photograph of all time.
- 19:59Speaker 3: It's coming up next after this.
- 20:14Speaker 1: For almost fifty years, our next guest has been docuing
- 20:16Speaker 1: in the game of hockey with a camera and a smile.
- 20:19Speaker 1: He's a fixture of every major hockey event around the world,
- 20:22Speaker 1: covering six Olympics and more than five thousand NHL games,
- 20:25Speaker 1: while taking some of the most iconic photographs in the
- 20:28Speaker 1: history of the sport. He is also the answer to
- 20:30Speaker 1: the popular question, who's that guy on the ice at
- 20:32Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup Finals who looks like Albert Einstein?
- 20:35Speaker 3: It is the legend Bruce Bennett. Bruce, great to see you.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Thank you so much for gracing us.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Thanks so much for having me. Guys, good seeing you.
- 20:42Speaker 1: How did you even get started shooting this wonderful sport
- 20:44Speaker 1: of hockey?
- 20:46Speaker 5: Justin nai eighteen year old kid shot some pictures from
- 20:49Speaker 5: the blue seats at Madison Square Garden and snuck into
- 20:54Speaker 5: the photo box at Nasau Coliseum. That was in seventy
- 20:58Speaker 5: three seventy four. Send him up to the famous Ken mackenzie,
- 21:02Speaker 5: the publisher of the Hockey News based out of mind
- 21:04Speaker 5: turioll back then, and he got back to me and said,
- 21:08Speaker 5: sure we could use some photos. We'll give you three
- 21:11Speaker 5: bucks a photo, and away we went the next season
- 21:15Speaker 5: in seventy four to seventy five.
- 21:17Speaker 2: That is unbelievable. I love that. What's you know from
- 21:21Speaker 2: seventy four to seventy five to now, Like, what are
- 21:23Speaker 2: some of the innovations you've seen that have changed and
- 21:27Speaker 2: kind of helped over the years.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Well, obviously computers and digital digital cameras. Now you know
- 21:36Speaker 5: you're back in the old days in the In the
- 21:39Speaker 5: earlier days, we'd have to take our film back process
- 21:43Speaker 5: it and then you would know you would screwed up
- 21:45Speaker 5: and miss the image. Now you know instantly on the
- 21:48Speaker 5: back of the camera that you screwed up and you
- 21:50Speaker 5: missed the image. But yeah, digital, the whole change in
- 21:54Speaker 5: photography is accelerated our learning curve to make sure we
- 22:01Speaker 5: stay on top of what's going on in the in
- 22:03Speaker 5: the photo world.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Do you just kick yourself when you go home back
- 22:07Speaker 2: in the day and you unwind the film and you're
- 22:10Speaker 2: in you're in there what is it called the dark room,
- 22:12Speaker 2: and you're just like, show Jesus, I just screwed this up.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I still do that. Actually at games, people
- 22:22Speaker 5: who sit next to me, hear myself talking to myself.
- 22:25Speaker 5: Hear me talking to myself going, what is wrong with you? Like,
- 22:29Speaker 5: how could you miss it? It was right in front of you.
- 22:30Speaker 5: How do you? What is wrong? Where's your head? Bennett?
- 22:33Speaker 5: Get your head in the game. You know, things like that.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Sometimes it's out loud, sometimes it's just in my head.
- 22:39Speaker 5: But as I said, you instantly know that you screwed
- 22:42Speaker 5: up in the old days with manual focus. I mean
- 22:46Speaker 5: I lived with manual focus for more than thirty years.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Then you move to auto focus, which is definitely a
- 22:52Speaker 5: step up, but still is a learning curve on exactly
- 22:56Speaker 5: when to push that shutter and when guys or in
- 22:59Speaker 5: your range of focus. I mean back in the early days,
- 23:03Speaker 5: most of it was, you know, just a low percentage
- 23:06Speaker 5: that we're sharp and clear.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I'm sure it's like choose between children, Bruce, But are
- 23:11Speaker 1: there some favorite pictures of yours over the years.
- 23:15Speaker 5: It's kind of hard getting through the probably two point
- 23:18Speaker 5: five million images to pick out the ten best. He's
- 23:21Speaker 5: got the number though, I've got summer. I've got like
- 23:23Speaker 5: two months of summer here. You got plenty of time
- 23:25Speaker 5: to go through that stuff. But yeah, like you're you know,
- 23:29Speaker 5: which is your favorite kid? It changes day to day.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Every time someone says, oh, you know, what are your
- 23:36Speaker 5: top ten? Something else sneaks in, like Ovechkin scoring this year,
- 23:42Speaker 5: scoring his record breaking goal all of a sudden, that's
- 23:44Speaker 5: snuck into the top ten for a few weeks. I
- 23:47Speaker 5: think it's still in there. It'll be in there for
- 23:49Speaker 5: another year or two until I keep producing more images
- 23:53Speaker 5: and find something else that I like a little bit better.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Is there something you like took in the moment You're like, ah,
- 24:00Speaker 2: this is really a nothing burger, But you know now
- 24:03Speaker 2: you're like, oh my god, that was just such an
- 24:06Speaker 2: iconic moment that I caught on film.
- 24:09Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, Usually those iconic moments, you know, you don't
- 24:13Speaker 5: expect them and all of a sudden something pops up
- 24:15Speaker 5: in front of you, or all of a sudden an
- 24:17Speaker 5: image takes wings and people start talking about it. The
- 24:22Speaker 5: one I would point to that a lot of people
- 24:26Speaker 5: have commented on through the years as a picture of
- 24:30Speaker 5: Bob Gainey on the shoulders of his Montreal Canadian teammates.
- 24:35Speaker 5: It's the back of him holding up the Stanley Cup.
- 24:39Speaker 5: And that was nineteen seventy nine. It was actually only
- 24:43Speaker 5: my second Stanley Cup presentation, the first one being in
- 24:47Speaker 5: seventy six, Montreal winning in Philadelphia. So I go up
- 24:50Speaker 5: to Montreal and back then, if you didn't speak French,
- 24:53Speaker 5: you were kind of out of luck in terms of
- 24:56Speaker 5: getting around things. Today, Yeah, that is a good point. Yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 5: I don't try as much anymore. But I couldn't get
- 25:08Speaker 5: on the ice at the end of the Stanley Cup presentation,
- 25:12Speaker 5: and I ran around the rink one way in a
- 25:15Speaker 5: security guard put his hand in my face. It ran
- 25:18Speaker 5: around the other way, and I guess my inexperience, you know,
- 25:24Speaker 5: showed and I'm sure there was probably a pregame meeting
- 25:27Speaker 5: somewhere where they explained what the rules were. Long story short,
- 25:32Speaker 5: I ended up getting back to near where my photo
- 25:35Speaker 5: position was behind the net, stood on some chairs and
- 25:39Speaker 5: the patrons there were great. They actually steadied me to
- 25:43Speaker 5: make sure I didn't fall while they were cheering for
- 25:45Speaker 5: their beloved Canadians. And the only shot that I got
- 25:49Speaker 5: was the back of Bob Ganey holding up to Stanley Cup.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Little did I know that that would be on the
- 25:54Speaker 5: cover of three different books through the years and was
- 25:57Speaker 5: more symbolic of you know, with hands holding up Bob
- 26:02Speaker 5: Ganey him holding up the cup. It was more became
- 26:05Speaker 5: symbolic about teamwork and camaraderie that it takes to win
- 26:10Speaker 5: the Stanley Cup.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a great point. Some of my favorite pictures
- 26:14Speaker 1: are like that, Bruce. It's like it's not just a
- 26:15Speaker 1: head on shot. It's not a profile shots from behind,
- 26:18Speaker 1: it's in silhouette, it's images dark and like that's as
- 26:21Speaker 1: you said, that's kind of where the magic happens sometimes, right,
- 26:23Speaker 1: that act of serendipity where a specific moment can become
- 26:25Speaker 1: something universal.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I mean sometimes we plan things out, like
- 26:32Speaker 5: I say, sometimes, you know, some photographers take photos, others
- 26:37Speaker 5: make photos, and throughout my career most of it I
- 26:41Speaker 5: was taking photos I was shooting what was in front
- 26:44Speaker 5: of me. As you get more experience in the industry,
- 26:48Speaker 5: you make photos, You plan out where remote cameras are
- 26:52Speaker 5: going to be, You plan out how to play with
- 26:56Speaker 5: a lighting a little bit better than you did in
- 26:58Speaker 5: the earlier days, how to actually create something. And those
- 27:02Speaker 5: are the ones you take more pride and because you
- 27:05Speaker 5: worked hard at something and maybe you maybe you did
- 27:08Speaker 5: several times until you got it right. One case in point,
- 27:12Speaker 5: Barbrovski does this thing to start each period where he
- 27:16Speaker 5: takes a sip of water, it looks up at the
- 27:18Speaker 5: rafters and spits it up and it lands all over
- 27:20Speaker 5: his face, I would assume, so that I planned out.
- 27:25Speaker 5: I don't see Florida as often in my local arenas
- 27:28Speaker 5: because of the alignment, so I put a camera over
- 27:33Speaker 5: the net because all I want to do is catch
- 27:35Speaker 5: him looking straight up and having that water spray. So,
- 27:39Speaker 5: of course, the first game, Florida comes in, the backup
- 27:41Speaker 5: goalie plays, so that was no luck. Second game they
- 27:45Speaker 5: come in cameras out of focus, so that was no luck.
- 27:47Speaker 5: And we're talking over over two seasons basically, and finally
- 27:52Speaker 5: third or fourth time was a charm where everything worked
- 27:55Speaker 5: out the exposure, the lighting, the spray. So I was
- 28:01Speaker 5: proud of the shot. It probably wasn't a great shot,
- 28:05Speaker 5: not a historic shot, but something that I worked hard
- 28:07Speaker 5: to achieve.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's like the time you put in the effort,
- 28:12Speaker 2: and you know, it's very similar to making a scouting
- 28:16Speaker 2: report for an NHL hockey game as a player, like
- 28:18Speaker 2: you're getting ready to play. You know something might go wrong,
- 28:21Speaker 2: it might not go perfect, but you at least you
- 28:23Speaker 2: make those preparations. So is that do you have to
- 28:28Speaker 2: really study every not every single player, but the players
- 28:31Speaker 2: that are important to you.
- 28:33Speaker 5: Yeah, Preparation is key. Preparation is key. I start off
- 28:37Speaker 5: early in the morning. When I wake at around seven,
- 28:40Speaker 5: I'm like a kid in a candy store. I'm like
- 28:43Speaker 5: run to the computer. I look for the wait for
- 28:45Speaker 5: the NHL media notes to come in. I go through
- 28:49Speaker 5: the roster. I take a look at players. Usually, you know,
- 28:52Speaker 5: when the when the Western teams come into my Eastern cities,
- 28:55Speaker 5: usually I go, oh my god, this guy is still playing,
- 28:58Speaker 5: you know, play Comos on his thirty seventh NHL team.
- 29:02Speaker 5: It's it's ridiculous. You know, there are guys who just
- 29:05Speaker 5: keep reappearing. Travis Hammonik. You know the guys who played
- 29:09Speaker 5: in Islanders and I shot him so many times. All
- 29:11Speaker 5: of a sudden, where is this guy now? But I
- 29:13Speaker 5: look through the rosters, I mark them up with my
- 29:16Speaker 5: own little code. Is a guy looking for his first
- 29:18Speaker 5: NHL goal? Is it his first game? Is somebody else
- 29:21Speaker 5: going to be dressing for the game? I haven't seen
- 29:23Speaker 5: them in that uniform before. So I do that homework.
- 29:27Speaker 5: Then during the day, I go back and I take
- 29:29Speaker 5: a look at the roster again and I go, Okay,
- 29:32Speaker 5: this guy's propensity, the team's propensity might be to shoot
- 29:36Speaker 5: the puck in So chances are tonight there's going to
- 29:38Speaker 5: be a lot of dump and chase. What side of
- 29:41Speaker 5: the ice? You know, if there are superstars, what side
- 29:45Speaker 5: of the ice do I really want to be focused
- 29:47Speaker 5: on that. I need to be more concerned about getting
- 29:51Speaker 5: let's call it stock images of a player for trading cards,
- 29:55Speaker 5: for the vendors who do posters and prints. There is
- 30:00Speaker 5: a lot of work that goes into it. And when
- 30:01Speaker 5: we set up our remote cameras in the arenas, which
- 30:04Speaker 5: is a big part of a coverage, I take that
- 30:07Speaker 5: all into consideration.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Cup celebrations are always special Bruce.
- 30:11Speaker 1: It kind of goes back to your pointment saying, you
- 30:13Speaker 1: don't just take photos, you make photos. At this point,
- 30:15Speaker 1: having seen them so many times, what are you looking
- 30:17Speaker 1: to do to make that Cup celebration picture unique?
- 30:21Speaker 5: Yeah, it's interesting through the years how the Cup celebration
- 30:25Speaker 5: has evolved from all our brawl on the wall on
- 30:28Speaker 5: the ice with all the photographers punching and kicking each other.
- 30:32Speaker 5: And I mean one of the early years, one of
- 30:35Speaker 5: the gretz Ski years, I remember just being smushed up
- 30:39Speaker 5: in front of him in the cup and the fear
- 30:41Speaker 5: in his eyes, and he's just saying, put back up.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Everybody back up. And I'm with all my five foot
- 30:48Speaker 5: seven and one hundred and fifty pounds and I'm pushing
- 30:50Speaker 5: back as hard as they can and bigger guys and
- 30:52Speaker 5: pushing me into him. NHL got it that under control.
- 30:58Speaker 5: And how many people are on the ice, how many
- 31:00Speaker 5: people are allowed to run on the ice, how many
- 31:02Speaker 5: stand on the carpet. But of course that iconic shot
- 31:06Speaker 5: of the players holding up the cup, that's the first
- 31:09Speaker 5: go that's the first shot, and then what else supplements
- 31:13Speaker 5: that to also tell the story. The team shot, of course,
- 31:16Speaker 5: is a big one that Gretzky started in the eighties
- 31:19Speaker 5: getting the team together for that informal shot. That's a
- 31:22Speaker 5: big one, and in more recent years there are other
- 31:25Speaker 5: images with remote cameras that have taken hold and people
- 31:31Speaker 5: love seeing. That's a camera on the goal light stanchion
- 31:34Speaker 5: directly behind the net where the players come off the
- 31:37Speaker 5: bench and they come towards the goaltender and the goaltenders
- 31:40Speaker 5: flying up in the air, sticks gloves and puck. You know,
- 31:42Speaker 5: sticks and gloves flying in the air. That's become a
- 31:45Speaker 5: staple of our Stanley Cup Championship imagery and this year,
- 31:51Speaker 5: you know Stanley Cup, I work with the team, so
- 31:55Speaker 5: it's Getty Images and is who I'm with, and we
- 32:00Speaker 5: decide who will be the best photographers either geographically, who
- 32:03Speaker 5: have big experience in a certain arena, which photographers we
- 32:07Speaker 5: bring in to supplement the coverage. Everyone does remote cameras.
- 32:12Speaker 5: This year it just kind of laid out that I
- 32:15Speaker 5: was able to do. One of the other staples as
- 32:17Speaker 5: it's become in the industry is the wide shot from
- 32:20Speaker 5: the catwalk as all the players are dancing across the
- 32:24Speaker 5: ice with the gloves and the sticks flying in the air,
- 32:27Speaker 5: going towards the goaltender. So it's a backed up view
- 32:31Speaker 5: and a very graphic view because the ice is just
- 32:34Speaker 5: littered with all the players equipment as they dance across
- 32:37Speaker 5: the ice to celebrate.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Is that your decision or that's left completely up to
- 32:43Speaker 2: you or is there a lot of kind of back
- 32:45Speaker 2: and forth into going into that.
- 32:48Speaker 5: Yeah. I direct our coverage for Getty Images, so all
- 32:53Speaker 5: the hockey falls on me, and my experience always open
- 32:59Speaker 5: to photographers that I bring in who come up with
- 33:01Speaker 5: different angles and think outside the box. But typically what
- 33:05Speaker 5: we say is this is what we must have. This
- 33:08Speaker 5: is our coverage. We need to ensure not only with
- 33:12Speaker 5: handheld cameras but with remote cameras, that we ensure that
- 33:16Speaker 5: history is recorded. So I do this crazy map which
- 33:21Speaker 5: my editors hate, and usually the photographers go just tell
- 33:25Speaker 5: me where I need to be and where my remote
- 33:27Speaker 5: cameras need to be. But it's a matter of visualizing
- 33:31Speaker 5: that if a player scores and he goes into the
- 33:32Speaker 5: far left Zamboni corner, will there be a camera there
- 33:36Speaker 5: to capture him. Yeah, And that's constantly the insurance that
- 33:40Speaker 5: we need to make sure that for the NHL and
- 33:43Speaker 5: Forgetty images for our clients. That history is captured and ensured,
- 33:50Speaker 5: you know, for all time.
- 33:52Speaker 2: I mean, all the intricacies are so fascinating. Bruce here
- 33:56Speaker 2: and I just I see the Gretzki jersey on your wall.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Do you have a favorite Gretzky shot or moment around Wayne?
- 34:04Speaker 5: You know, it's weird, like there's a there's one in
- 34:07Speaker 5: the background where he's scoring against Buffalo to break Esposito's record. Yeah,
- 34:14Speaker 5: And the fact is it's a pretty mundane, boring image
- 34:17Speaker 5: when you look at it, But the puck is going
- 34:20Speaker 5: across across the goal, the goal line. It is a
- 34:24Speaker 5: piece of hockey history. That image has probably been used,
- 34:29Speaker 5: you know, licensed properly thirty times and probably bootlegged across
- 34:33Speaker 5: the internet two hundred and seventy five thousand times. So
- 34:37Speaker 5: to me, it's kind of a boring shot, but it
- 34:40Speaker 5: is that historic moment. But Gretzky. Gretzky was always a
- 34:45Speaker 5: hard guy to photograph because he was so elusive, not
- 34:48Speaker 5: only to me but to defenders, very erratic skating pattern.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Nothing really stands out to me as being, you know,
- 34:58Speaker 5: an overly great image of him.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Wow, how about to say, how about a favorite guy
- 35:03Speaker 1: to photograph. They're candidly like off the ice just gives
- 35:07Speaker 1: you lots of personality, lots of different looks, or somebody
- 35:09Speaker 1: on the ice you found like you were able to
- 35:10Speaker 1: capture his game.
- 35:11Speaker 5: So well, yeah, I always liked the guys who were
- 35:15Speaker 5: the challenge. I mean Connor McDavid. I mean, I just
- 35:20Speaker 5: eat up any game that he's on the ice. I mean,
- 35:23Speaker 5: obviously it's kind of odd because you know, you guys
- 35:26Speaker 5: look at it from the video perspective, and I guess
- 35:29Speaker 5: most people do. Like you watch a video of him
- 35:31Speaker 5: slicing through defenders and it's I mean it's pure gold.
- 35:36Speaker 5: I mean watching him skate, just the power and the
- 35:38Speaker 5: strides and for me being at you know, a thousandth
- 35:43Speaker 5: of a second or twelve fifty of a second, you're
- 35:45Speaker 5: trying to get a freeze frame of him that tells
- 35:50Speaker 5: really the story of the speed and the agility, maybe
- 35:53Speaker 5: the skate digging into the ice with a little bit
- 35:55Speaker 5: of snow flying. Players like that that are super fast
- 36:01Speaker 5: and dynamic and unpredictable, those are my favorite players to
- 36:05Speaker 5: shoot because it's it's such a challenge.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Well, you've made it look easier over the years, and
- 36:10Speaker 1: I know it's anything but Bruce Bennett, legendary photographer of
- 36:13Speaker 1: the NHL for so many years. It's been amazing just
- 36:15Speaker 1: to look at all that you've captured, Bruce, and I
- 36:17Speaker 1: appreciate the insight here with us.
- 36:19Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks guys. Great being with.
- 36:20Speaker 1: You, cinefil and sixty. That's right, I finally joined the ranks.
- 36:31Speaker 1: I see if tal Pinchewski can do it, clearly I
- 36:32Speaker 1: can do it too. My book, Cinophile Interviews, Essays and
- 36:36Speaker 1: Tails from the Red Carpet, will.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Be available August twenty six. You can pre order right
- 36:39Speaker 3: now on Amazon.
- 36:39Speaker 1: We'll put the link out here on social Maybe we'll
- 36:41Speaker 1: get this clip out there. It's a ton of fun
- 36:43Speaker 1: to write a book, jend. I'm so happy I was
- 36:45Speaker 1: able to do. Listen three hundred and thirty six episodes
- 36:47Speaker 1: of Cinephile. You knew the book was coming eventually. Interviews
- 36:50Speaker 1: with DeNiro, Margo, Robbie, Mark Wahlbergharst Law Lee, Matthew McConaughey,
- 36:54Speaker 1: too many account essays as well. It was a blast, buddy,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and thank you in advance for the social media support.
- 36:58Speaker 1: You tweeted me you want an autograph copy. I appreciate
- 37:01Speaker 1: you we'll get the word out.
- 37:02Speaker 2: This is great. Oh my, am I going to get
- 37:05Speaker 2: the autograph copy?
- 37:06Speaker 3: Yeah? Absolutely.
- 37:07Speaker 1: So a couple of people ask the first question, go
- 37:08Speaker 1: autograph copy, how does that happen? And I go, I'll
- 37:11Speaker 1: find out for the publisher and they say, well, you'll
- 37:12Speaker 1: sign a certain amount and then we can we can
- 37:14Speaker 1: ship those whoever wants the autograph copy. And then somebody
- 37:17Speaker 1: else asked you for an audiobook and I go, come on, like,
- 37:19Speaker 1: I'm not Yeah, that'd be pretty cool.
- 37:21Speaker 2: You doing your own audio book. I I mean I.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Have, but my comment was I'm not that big a deal.
- 37:26Speaker 1: They go, well, no, but think about you're a broadcaster.
- 37:28Speaker 1: How could you not do the audiobook? So I check
- 37:29Speaker 1: with the publisher. He goes, decent chance that will happen
- 37:32Speaker 1: as well, and then they go, what about a kindle?
- 37:33Speaker 1: He goes, yep, kindle available as well, So we're thether thing.
- 37:36Speaker 1: I goes, I don't like going online, no offense, I'm
- 37:38Speaker 1: not a priority guy.
- 37:39Speaker 3: I'm with you. He goes, Barnes and Noble will definitely
- 37:41Speaker 3: have the book. So a beilboere of our.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Bookstores are sold. Go ahead, Wow, no, I mean I
- 37:45Speaker 2: love it. If only you know we'd get back like
- 37:47Speaker 2: this this, that'd be great. We'd be off to the races.
- 37:50Speaker 3: If we had that kind of support.
- 37:51Speaker 2: You're saying, yeah, we'd be cooking right now.
- 37:55Speaker 1: I wanted to mention though, my buddy Randall Thorne. Our
- 37:57Speaker 1: team so proud of him. So he we're college roommates,
- 38:00Speaker 1: not college roommates, college buddies way back in the day
- 38:02Speaker 1: at Ryerson now TMU.
- 38:03Speaker 3: He makes it movie called.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Forty Acres starring Danielle Deadwiler, came out to the Toronto
- 38:06Speaker 1: Film Festival last year. I flow up just for the premiere.
- 38:08Speaker 1: It was awesome with the whole gang together, and he
- 38:10Speaker 1: gets a deal with mag NOOI. The movie was just
- 38:12Speaker 1: released July fourth weekend, so I was texting, was this amazing?
- 38:15Speaker 1: If a movie opening July fourth up against Jurassic World
- 38:17Speaker 1: Jurassic worlds in forty eight hundred theaters?
- 38:19Speaker 3: How many theaters you? And he was three hundred.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Well per screen average, You're gonna crush it. I got
- 38:23Speaker 1: to tell you, forty acres. I'm so proud of Randall.
- 38:26Speaker 1: This movie currently on Rotten Tweeno says that ninety one
- 38:28Speaker 1: percent according to critics and eighty eight percent for the
- 38:30Speaker 1: fans amazing. I want to read you a little bit.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Ty Burr is my favorite film. Critics like, let's see
- 38:34Speaker 1: what Ti versays. Forty Acres three and a half stars
- 38:37Speaker 1: a genre movie the way geenre movies are supposed to
- 38:39Speaker 1: be but rarely are. It invigorates an old premise with
- 38:41Speaker 1: fresh ideas, layers, well crafted action with thematic richness both
- 38:46Speaker 1: committed performances, and is so taught with tension that the
- 38:49Speaker 1: audience might snap before the characters due. The setting is
- 38:52Speaker 1: twelve years after the pandemic. Essentially, he's mixing basically zombies
- 38:56Speaker 1: with you know, families. Rama really smooth, the smoothly gliding
- 38:59Speaker 1: camera work, the evocative score, brooding movie music with brief
- 39:02Speaker 1: eruptions of hip hop, the weazing of every bit of
- 39:05Speaker 1: juice from a minimal budget and a minimalist location. This
- 39:09Speaker 1: is a movie to see and a director to watch.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Go watch forty acres in theaters.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Now, Wow, that was sexual.
- 39:15Speaker 3: Tiber is unbelievable. He's a help.
- 39:17Speaker 2: I've heerd. I'm so suppled down to my plums.
- 39:22Speaker 1: A couple thoughts before we say goodbye and again, We'll
- 39:25Speaker 1: be back in a couple of weeks.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Great news.
- 39:27Speaker 1: JD labor pieces here, NHL NHL Player Association, four year CBA,
- 39:31Speaker 1: we're good till twenty twenty nine to twenty thirty. The
- 39:34Speaker 1: other sports of jels. We get these things done like that.
- 39:35Speaker 1: We don't have to all the details. A bottom line
- 39:37Speaker 1: is this a couple more games being added right, eighty
- 39:40Speaker 1: two to eighty four. What else would you like to
- 39:41Speaker 1: see here added to the CBA?
- 39:45Speaker 2: Ah, I man, I wish I CBA going back to
- 39:52Speaker 2: starting earlier and finishing earlier. I know that's a hot topic.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I think it's gotten a little long. I just think,
- 39:58Speaker 2: but it's gonna be tough with four nations doing so
- 40:01Speaker 2: well now, I mean, we're screwed. It's gonna be every
- 40:03Speaker 2: other year for the Olympic after the Olympics, so we're
- 40:07Speaker 2: absolutely hoofed. So we're we're in this for the long haul.
- 40:10Speaker 2: And and you know, I think they got some stuff done.
- 40:13Speaker 2: I mean, listen, the the NHL wants this more than
- 40:17Speaker 2: I think the PA does. And I think there's not
- 40:20Speaker 2: enough for the NHL PA to really nitpick at. So
- 40:23Speaker 2: why wouldn't you, you know, ruin a good thing. Caps
- 40:26Speaker 2: going up, guys are getting paid more and the league's
- 40:31Speaker 2: in a healthy, healthy place. So I just think it's
- 40:33Speaker 2: it's new TV deal signed, it's it's one of those
- 40:36Speaker 2: tough ones. I don't really know what you had, other
- 40:38Speaker 2: than some, you know ones like when I was in
- 40:40Speaker 2: the locker where it was like can we get our
- 40:41Speaker 2: own roommates like stuff like that, like you know, just
- 40:44Speaker 2: just little little, little wild things. But no, overall, I
- 40:47Speaker 2: I really do like it. It's it is what it is.
- 40:50Speaker 2: It's I think the fans don't have to be nervous
- 40:53Speaker 2: and think about this. It's hockey. Hockey goes on on,
- 40:57Speaker 2: the show, keeps on.
- 41:00Speaker 3: What about three on three OT?
- 41:03Speaker 2: I mean we talked about that, which they change rules
- 41:05Speaker 2: in that, but that's more general managers meetings over the CBA.
- 41:08Speaker 3: No good point bottom line.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I like, swat you there, No, it's good.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I throw it out there and you go, no, that's wrong.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Next.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I'm just glad that at least, as you said in
- 41:18Speaker 1: baseball listen, we have a looming locket hit him next year.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Everyone's already talk about it's so great hockey is we're not.
- 41:23Speaker 1: We're taking care of NBA new deal sizes baseball like,
- 41:25Speaker 1: oh my god, ar Mageddon. This is gonna be insane.
- 41:28Speaker 1: They're gonna lose an entire season. It's a year and
- 41:30Speaker 1: a half away. They're talking about now in hockey like, no,
- 41:32Speaker 1: we're all good, everyone gets along.
- 41:33Speaker 3: It's fine.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Well, because I think the MLB, I think the players
- 41:37Speaker 2: bent over the owners years ago. Now it's like the
- 41:41Speaker 2: revenge is coming. And I think the players they're holding
- 41:44Speaker 2: pat because why wouldn't you when you get a deal
- 41:45Speaker 2: that good. You know, Don Fair did what he should
- 41:49Speaker 2: have done for us.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Don, if you're amazing in baseball, struggled in hockey.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well that just goes to show Gary Bettman GB
- 41:58Speaker 2: bent him over.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Happy Triols.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Tyler Johnson, by the way, announcing his retirement this week,
- 42:04Speaker 1: I want to mention though, speaking of guys recently retired
- 42:06Speaker 1: Mark Andrew Flury interesting comm player agentp Al Walls, who
- 42:11Speaker 1: said on his podcast five different teams reached out to
- 42:13Speaker 1: him ask if there's anyway Flower could come back. I
- 42:16Speaker 1: think it's best just to go off into the sunset.
- 42:18Speaker 1: He's an incredible career. What do you think, though, could
- 42:20Speaker 1: Mark Andre Fleury be back on the ice next season?
- 42:24Speaker 2: He No, I don't think so, but I mean that's
- 42:27Speaker 2: that is wild that five teams. It just goes to
- 42:31Speaker 2: show you and you're a good backup. It's like being
- 42:33Speaker 2: a good backup quarterback. You're just so sought after and
- 42:37Speaker 2: you could play forever because you come in. He's taking
- 42:41Speaker 2: care of himself. You just come in when you can
- 42:43Speaker 2: and then you know you're just whole hum every single
- 42:48Speaker 2: year like it's just wild. And he's a great teammate.
- 42:50Speaker 2: So that's that's just amazing. It's hard to find good
- 42:53Speaker 2: backup goalies that you can just rely on year in
- 42:55Speaker 2: and year out. And so it's Marc Andre Fleury could
- 42:58Speaker 2: have a job for the next twenty if you wanted to.
- 43:00Speaker 1: It's gonna say, if you're a good guy and can
- 43:01Speaker 1: get it done this in ten twenty games, Flower couldld
- 43:03Speaker 1: do that.
- 43:04Speaker 3: Of course we shall sell you. Anyways, this was a
- 43:06Speaker 3: ton of fun here at NHL Unscripted. JD enjoy the honeymoon.
- 43:09Speaker 1: We'll be back in a couple of weeks as we
- 43:11Speaker 1: continue her in NHL Unscripted. NHL Unscripted is a production
