- 0:27A special thanks to Jerry Vargo for both his research on this history, but also
- 0:33for his permission to share it with you.
- 0:36From 1922 to 1929, Peter w Philpot was serving as the pastor of the
- 0:43Moody Church in Chicago, Illinois.
- 0:45One night he was awakened by a call to come help a young woman staying
- 0:49at the Stevens Hotel, now named the Conrad Hilton within the city.
- 0:55He arrived to find her in the company of two family members.
- 0:58The woman, Lela Long was gravely ill and in great distress.
- 1:03Pastor Phil Philpot prayed for her physical needs, but also had the privilege
- 1:08of leading her to faith in Christ.
- 1:11Late the next day, he phoned the hotel to see how she was doing, only to learn that
- 1:17the three people had already checked out.
- 1:20He wondered what had become of them, but had no way of getting in touch.
- 1:25Five or six years later, Peter Philpott moved to California and was the pastor
- 1:30of a large church in Los Angeles.
- 1:32At the close of one service, who should come up to him?
- 1:36The three people he had met in Chicago, they had seen his picture in a church
- 1:41advertisement and came to meet him.
- 1:44He'd learned that an emergency had required their rapid departure
- 1:48from Chicago, and they apologized for not getting in touch with him.
- 1:52Lela long thanked him for pointing her to the savior.
- 1:56Her life was wonderfully changed and she was now using her
- 2:00musical talent to serve the Lord.
- 2:02She handed Pastor Philpot a copy of Jesus Is the Sweetest name I know written after
- 2:09her conversation, she said, I have written this, especially for you in Remembrance
- 2:14of the day that you introduced me to the most wonderful person I've ever known.
- 2:20Pastor Phil Pod asked her what was the inspiration for the theme of this song.
- 2:25She replied that she knew a medical missionary in China who
- 2:28gave the gospel to everyone he treated for their medical needs.
- 2:32One day, a very old woman stooped with age came to the clinic.
- 2:37It was evident that she had traveled a long distance to come to the
- 2:40clinic by the mud caked on her feet.
- 2:43After treating the woman, as was his custom, the missionary led her to Christ.
- 2:49Several days later, the woman came back to the clinic.
- 2:52The missionary asked her what she needed medically.
- 2:56The old woman said that she did not need any medical attention, but that she wanted
- 3:00to ask a question of the missionary.
- 3:02The old woman said to the missionary, he saved me.
- 3:06He lives in my heart and he has made me so happy.
- 3:09But sir, I have forgotten his name.
- 3:13The missionary said to the old woman, his name is Jesus.
- 3:18The woman bowed low as Orientals do and thanked the missionary for telling her his
- 3:25name as the old woman left the missionary, he could hear her repeatedly saying as
- 3:30she walked away, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
- 3:36She traveled all that long way just to learn his name.
- 3:41Lela Long told Pastor Phil Pot, that was what gave me the idea for this song.
- 3:47The song says, there have been names that I loved to hear, but never has
- 3:53there been a name so dear to this heart of mine as the name divine,
- 4:00the precious, precious name of Jesus.
- 4:03And the chorus says, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.
- 4:08And he's just the same as his lovely name, and that's the reason why I love him.
- 4:15So.
- 4:16Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know, friend.
- 4:21The Bible says in Acts 4:12 that there is none other name under heaven
- 4:28given among men whereby we must be saved and that name is Jesus.
- 4:34If you have never called upon the name of Jesus to save you from
- 4:37your sin, you can write now and you too can discover for yourself.
- 4:43That Jesus is the sweetest name I know.
