- 0:11This morning I had the thought of this is this is 1/2 baked
- 0:15potato. So I'm going to work it out.
- 0:17As I talk it out. What I was doing was comparing
- 0:19and contrasting a marital relationship and the
- 0:22relationship believers have with the church as an organization,
- 0:27as a place you go weekly or twice a week to fellowship and
- 0:32whatever. And I was thinking how in
- 0:35marriage, if you are just going through the motions, like, yes,
- 0:39this is my spouse, but we don't share anything deep.
- 0:41I don't have an open heart. I I'm easily offended.
- 0:45I don't like the way this person is.
- 0:48I'm constantly praying that God change my spouse while
- 0:52simultaneously blaming everything on them and never
- 0:54looking at my heart like the way that that makes a marriage feel,
- 0:59which I've lived through personally so I can.
- 1:01It's not great. It's saltless hard boiled eggs.
- 1:04If there was a flavor to marriage, that's what that
- 1:06marriage is like. And how in those seasons of
- 1:10life, when you stick it out, you don't give up, You don't be
- 1:12like, well, my husband's a narcissist and I'm out of here.
- 1:15Hello. We're all narcissists to some
- 1:17extent. So let's stop leveling blame,
- 1:19even though it doesn't feel like it at the time and it doesn't.
- 1:23It feels like the Sahara desert in a windstorm, sandblasting
- 1:27your face. Somehow the Holy Spirit works
- 1:31some stuff out of you and like in you and through your heart,
- 1:36you come to a place where it's like, oh, OK, so a lot of these
- 1:41issues are my issues. And I keep looking over here to
- 1:44blame this other person, but it's really me.
- 1:46That is what it's like when you're going to church and
- 1:50you're just doing it because this is what you do.
- 1:53So a lot of times in that season, people divorce the
- 1:55church. People will be like, this is
- 1:56stupid. I'm tired of programs, I'm tired
- 1:58of formulas. I'm tired of empire building
- 2:01within the church, right? And you leave and we did that.
- 2:04So I'm not pointing fingers. But what ends up happening is
- 2:07you don't get the fruit of perseverance.
- 2:10And I'm not saying one should commit to a church and stay
- 2:13there forever, but I'm saying divorcing the church, no longer
- 2:17attending church services and and taking the approach of like
- 2:19an A la carte experience, you lose the opportunity to bear the
- 2:24fruit of perseverance in that way.
- 2:26And it so closely mirrors a marital bond.
- 2:30So then you have to look at it as threefold, right?
- 2:33There's the marriage of husband and wife, there's the marriage
- 2:35to the Lamb, And then there's the marriage of the church and
- 2:38us in the body, the unity of the body, right?
- 2:41So those 3 aspects are all marriage in some way.
- 2:44They're like different facets of the same diamond.
- 2:47When we persevere, we come out of the other side with the fruit
- 2:51of persistence. And also it births in you a kind
- 2:54of grace for people and institutions because you see the
- 3:00hand of God even in the mess. Do I think God should sort out
- 3:05the formulaic empire building that is in the church?
- 3:08Yes, I do. I wish he would have done it
- 3:10yesterday, but he's not. But and he is God and he's doing
- 3:14it in his timing. The Bible literally says don't
- 3:17forsake the assembly of the Saints.
- 3:19Don't do that. I was always like, why?
- 3:22I mean, easy for you to say Paul, because when you were
- 3:24writing that y'all were doing it right, OK.
- 3:27You were small gatherings. You were seeking the word for
- 3:31yourselves. You're coming together, sharing
- 3:33what you had amongst each other. It was the book of Acts church
- 3:36boom. And now look at us.
- 3:39Now we have people dressed up in Marvel costumes in doing skits
- 3:46of Michael Jackson's thriller. This is what we're doing.
- 3:50So what are you talking about forsaking the assembly of The
- 3:53Who are the Saints? Where are the Saints?
- 3:56Because all I see is a bunch of actors wearing masks.
- 3:58I see theater Jesus, and I don't want to participate in theater.
- 4:02I got enough drama inside my own walls.
- 4:05I don't need to go watch somebody else's drama played out
- 4:08on the stage that they call church.
- 4:10OK, puke. That was my mentality.
- 4:13And I don't fault my yesterday's self for that.
- 4:15But retrospectively, when things are clearer, I could say that we
- 4:21would do well to persevere because it mirrors what marriage
- 4:25is. And even if we're not married,
- 4:28that bond with the Church in the fellowship of the Saints, that
- 4:31persistence, that willingness to stick it out bears fruit in our
- 4:34lives. That is hard to combine other
- 4:36avenues. I think people come by it
- 4:39through jobs they feel called to.
- 4:41But all of this comes down to obedience, right?
- 4:43Once we stop doing these things sacrificially and we start doing
- 4:46them out of obedience, then we bear fruit because the
- 4:50sacrificial system is done. Now we do obedience.
