- 0:18Speaker 2: Put your hands together for Luis Montemo.
- 0:27Speaker 3: All right, welcome back to another episode of so Many podcasts.
- 0:31Speaker 3: This is shorty edition. No, this is shorty and not
- 0:34Speaker 3: gonna be the full forty five hour used to. It's
- 0:37Speaker 3: a little different, but we're gonna tackle one or two
- 0:39Speaker 3: subjects and go full force with it.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So if it's not an hour long link, don't be alarmed.
- 0:45Speaker 1: This is normal.
- 0:46Speaker 3: We're trying some stuff out for the summer months, so
- 0:49Speaker 3: just keep occupied. And Luis was so gracious enough to
- 0:53Speaker 3: put together a nice game plan for this shorty. Go ahead,
- 0:56Speaker 3: Louis what we're talking about.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Today, man, You know, we want to get into some
- 1:00Speaker 4: different stuff, Like you said, so, I actually wanted to
- 1:02Speaker 4: talk about sports gambling specifically, you know, betting apps and
- 1:07Speaker 4: that kind of thing, because it is a big part
- 1:09Speaker 4: of the world of sports and the world of boxing.
- 1:11Speaker 4: You are billed as not just a boxing expert, but
- 1:14Speaker 4: a sport's better on the show, I'm the super fan
- 1:18Speaker 4: and I've done some.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Some betting here and there.
- 1:20Speaker 4: You know, DraftKings and fan duel and other types of
- 1:23Speaker 4: betting apps have actually come under fire. They're straight up
- 1:26Speaker 4: a lawsuits going on with these things. So yeah, but
- 1:30Speaker 4: let's let's start here. So James said, what's your history
- 1:33Speaker 4: with sports betting? Like, how long have you been doing it?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Man?
- 1:36Speaker 3: So, I'm a sports fan, so I've known about spreads
- 1:39Speaker 3: and totals and everything since I was a kid. I'm
- 1:42Speaker 3: really good with numbers. I've been good with numbers since
- 1:44Speaker 3: I was like four years old. I've been playing dominoes forever,
- 1:46Speaker 3: so numbers naturally come very second antrier to me. So
- 1:50Speaker 3: when you think of numbers and sports, it's like a
- 1:54Speaker 3: common thing. So I've known about out right right now,
- 1:57Speaker 3: sports banking is very popular. I've been knowing about sports
- 2:00Speaker 3: betting since I was a kid. Also in high school,
- 2:04Speaker 3: I would dabble in it here and there, and then
- 2:06Speaker 3: as I got.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Older, I learned people have bookies and all that kind
- 2:09Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I lived in Vegas since I was eighteen, so I
- 2:12Speaker 3: never needed a bookie or nothing like that, because I
- 2:13Speaker 3: was I can either put a bet in myself i
- 2:16Speaker 3: was older, or I can't when I was putting in
- 2:19Speaker 3: for me, So that's kind of how it was. With
- 2:21Speaker 3: all that being said, sports betting has become the new alcohol.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It has become the new marijuana. It's become the new cigarettes.
- 2:30Speaker 3: It's being marketed that way. So even though it is
- 2:34Speaker 3: a nice hobby that people have getting, it's gotten bastardized
- 2:38Speaker 3: where it's getting pushed like nothing we've seen before, and
- 2:42Speaker 3: it's very scary for sure.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, now, I yeah, probably should have clarified this at
- 2:48Speaker 4: the beginning. But Jameson, you live in Vegas. I live
- 2:50Speaker 4: in Tucson, Arizona has legalized gambling with Native American casinos.
- 2:54Speaker 4: So I got a casino like I can be there
- 2:56Speaker 4: in fifteen twenty minutes less than thirty traffic, and I'm
- 3:01Speaker 4: actually there's one that's opening in my neighborhood, casino Do Soul.
- 3:05Speaker 4: None of this is an ad by the way, but
- 3:07Speaker 4: literally I can when it opens, I'll be able to
- 3:09Speaker 4: drive there in like less than ten minutes. So it's
- 3:12Speaker 4: something that's very accessible. And yeah, gambling well has always
- 3:17Speaker 4: had a history of you know, being addictive. People get
- 3:19Speaker 4: addicted to gambling, they lose their damned lives, their cars,
- 3:22Speaker 4: their homes. So it's not without its its risks. But
- 3:28Speaker 4: I'm curious, as somebody that does live in Vegas, how
- 3:31Speaker 4: you specifically see the difference from being able to always
- 3:34Speaker 4: place bets on sports for most of your adult life
- 3:37Speaker 4: and how it's changes in the last Like I think
- 3:39Speaker 4: twenty eighteen was when sports betting became allowed thanks to
- 3:43Speaker 4: a Supreme Court decision or something like that.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's interesting you mentioned that when it comes
- 3:48Speaker 3: to sports betting in general, the used to have to
- 3:52Speaker 3: go to a casino to put a bet in. So
- 3:54Speaker 3: before the apps aretay thing, you just have to go
- 3:56Speaker 3: to actual casino, go to a teller or cashier or
- 4:00Speaker 3: or as they call them, and make a bet that way,
- 4:03Speaker 3: and you have to collect that way too. So if
- 4:05Speaker 3: you're bet one, you have to pick up the cash
- 4:07Speaker 3: that way too. So imagine betting a bunch of bets.
- 4:11Speaker 3: You're at the right, you know, you're at the cashier,
- 4:13Speaker 3: you collect. It's just it was madness, Like look thinking
- 4:15Speaker 3: about it at now, it's complete madness, Like I don't
- 4:18Speaker 3: know how we did it at all, But around two
- 4:21Speaker 3: thousand and thirteen or twenty fourteen, the apps became common
- 4:27Speaker 3: practice amongst everything, and it made things way easier because
- 4:31Speaker 3: not having to go to casino every day, not being
- 4:34Speaker 3: able to, it's the way easy to keep track of
- 4:36Speaker 3: called the bets wrong. The app it became life saving,
- 4:40Speaker 3: like it changed everything and ever since then, that's where
- 4:43Speaker 3: we're at now. So you have the apps that make
- 4:46Speaker 3: gaming way easier, and then you have all the other
- 4:49Speaker 3: apps that care about that enhance stuff. It makes it
- 4:52Speaker 3: easier to deposit and withdrawmas don't have to go to
- 4:54Speaker 3: cascino at all. So so many things happen over the
- 4:57Speaker 3: last twelve years or so that like, yeah, the gambling
- 5:01Speaker 3: back then is the way and everything it is now,
- 5:02Speaker 3: but the marketing is the thing that's changed. Uh, every podcast,
- 5:06Speaker 3: whether it's a sports podcast or different like nonsports podcasts,
- 5:10Speaker 3: you have a gambling commercial, you know, a sportsbook commercial
- 5:14Speaker 3: of some sort, and that's where it's kind of getting
- 5:17Speaker 3: kind of scary. But with all that being said, we're
- 5:21Speaker 3: at the situation that you know, it is kind of
- 5:26Speaker 3: common practice. I mean it's legal, So if it's legal,
- 5:29Speaker 3: it's like cigarettes it's like alcohol.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's like weed. You know, it's it's legal, So it's
- 5:35Speaker 1: like anything else.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Moderation, don't don't overleverage yourself, don't put yourself in position
- 5:39Speaker 3: to where you don't have any money or you're you're
- 5:42Speaker 3: you're betting your absolute last, but nothing like with nothing
- 5:45Speaker 3: to show for or nothing to you know, back you up.
- 5:48Speaker 3: So but it's it's kind of scary how things have
- 5:52Speaker 3: changed because it used to be taboo. Betting used to
- 5:54Speaker 3: be like whenever you were betting would come up, people
- 5:57Speaker 3: would kind of get like afraid. Now I was like,
- 6:01Speaker 3: it's like a happy hour. It's way different, way different.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I personally, you know, my parents they
- 6:08Speaker 4: love casinos and I was growing up. I grew up
- 6:10Speaker 4: in Texas. We didn't have them there, but if we
- 6:12Speaker 4: would drive to Disney, the one in Florida, Disney World,
- 6:17Speaker 4: we would pull over stop halfway in Mississippi at a
- 6:20Speaker 4: hotel with casinos. So my parents would gamble, and you know,
- 6:24Speaker 4: we grew up hanging out of the art. They had
- 6:26Speaker 4: a little arcade in a play area with like you know,
- 6:29Speaker 4: just a kids room there. We would hang out there
- 6:31Speaker 4: and my parents would trade off just hint the tables
- 6:34Speaker 4: before they took off to the family vacation. So to me,
- 6:38Speaker 4: it was always like around obviously not you know, constant.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Definitely very different to move to Arizona when I was eighteen,
- 6:46Speaker 4: and then you can just drive to a casino in
- 6:48Speaker 4: like twenty minutes or whatever, like I said. But even so,
- 6:51Speaker 4: I will say someone who's never been a big gambler, like,
- 6:54Speaker 4: if I go to a casino here in town, it's
- 6:56Speaker 4: either going to be to hang out with friends, to
- 6:59Speaker 4: grab some drinks, some food, or to see concerts. See
- 7:02Speaker 4: does some concerts, So that's the main reason I've gone.
- 7:05Speaker 4: I don't get that much out of out of gambling.
- 7:07Speaker 4: But even I got into putting bets on the apps
- 7:11Speaker 4: when you know, for boxing, when I realized that, oh
- 7:15Speaker 4: it's kind of actually really easy to do it. So
- 7:17Speaker 4: you're kind kind of it's kind of proven the point
- 7:20Speaker 4: that you're making. It's a some people say it's a
- 7:22Speaker 4: little too not just as that it's a little too easy,
- 7:26Speaker 4: but that the apps have very specific addictive properties that
- 7:31Speaker 4: they're using to hook people in.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Uh.
- 7:34Speaker 4: There's, like I said, been lawsuits against DraftKings and Fenduel
- 7:37Speaker 4: for using things like algorithms and notifications so that when
- 7:42Speaker 4: people are like they just cash out there like, well,
- 7:44Speaker 4: you know, you can get more incentives, you can get
- 7:46Speaker 4: more bonuses, you can get this, and that it is
- 7:49Speaker 4: very much designed to hook you. Now here's where I
- 7:52Speaker 4: get a little like kind of if you and want
- 7:54Speaker 4: to get your take on this. You know, they say
- 7:57Speaker 4: the lawsuit charges that these there's an addictive product. I'm
- 8:00Speaker 4: not a scientist. I don't know anything about brain chemistry biology.
- 8:03Speaker 4: I have a college degree only because c's get degrees.
- 8:06Speaker 4: So don't expect you know a lot of science from me.
- 8:09Speaker 4: But I will say it has a lot of to
- 8:11Speaker 4: do with how your brain is wired. Because, like I said,
- 8:14Speaker 4: I can go into a casino, I use the sort machine,
- 8:17Speaker 4: play twenty bucks in black, I can walk out and
- 8:19Speaker 4: not lose my house. There's a lot of people that
- 8:21Speaker 4: can't do that, and that's not like does that mean
- 8:25Speaker 4: that the casino is or is it addictive or is
- 8:28Speaker 4: it the way our brains are wired. I don't know.
- 8:30Speaker 4: I just know that that's the thing. So what do
- 8:32Speaker 4: you think makes the apps so addictive that it could
- 8:35Speaker 4: be a problem these days? Or is it not? Is
- 8:38Speaker 4: it just a different way to do what people have
- 8:40Speaker 4: ever done.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It's the marketing.
- 8:42Speaker 3: When you hear and see something on TV every day
- 8:46Speaker 3: all day, it's around you. It's basically everywhere, and you're
- 8:52Speaker 3: watching sports. Help they have to think called a prediction
- 8:55Speaker 3: market now to where it's not gambling. You can make
- 8:57Speaker 3: predictions on the weather, the election, prediction on anything, and
- 9:01Speaker 3: that's where it's becomes with it's beyond sports.
- 9:04Speaker 1: It's beyond that. We they've made apps and sites.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Where you can make predictions on any outcome of anything,
- 9:11Speaker 3: and that's where I think it's a little bit too far.
- 9:14Speaker 3: We've jumped the shark and they the prediction market's basically
- 9:18Speaker 3: sidestep the no gambling thing or the no sportsbook thing.
- 9:24Speaker 3: So that's why you're able to use see certain things
- 9:26Speaker 3: like calsheet and better and all those things, and in
- 9:30Speaker 3: cities that are normally or states that are normally not
- 9:33Speaker 3: allowing those because prediction markets are not covered under those rules.
- 9:37Speaker 1: So it's a lot going on.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I think it's honestly, if you don't gamble, keep it
- 9:43Speaker 3: that way. If you want to gamble moderation, keep it
- 9:47Speaker 3: that way. But if you have a problem, get help,
- 9:51Speaker 3: because it's very difficult they're making it very very very
- 9:55Speaker 3: very difficult on people because it's everywhere. And then you
- 9:58Speaker 3: can also i mean, hell, I got to stay when
- 10:00Speaker 3: you can you can make a bet. You got to
- 10:03Speaker 3: say where you can track your bet when you're not
- 10:05Speaker 3: on the app, Like it's insane, Like it's great, Like
- 10:09Speaker 3: this is a lot going on. But they're making it
- 10:11Speaker 3: really a user friendly to where you can either make
- 10:15Speaker 3: one bet, you can make several bets and it's just
- 10:18Speaker 3: very efficient and if you like the bet, it's there
- 10:21Speaker 3: for you.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And that's a really good point about the marketing. How
- 10:25Speaker 4: it's everywhere but for me. And I'm not trying to
- 10:28Speaker 4: sit here and defend gambling or gambling apps or anything
- 10:30Speaker 4: like that. I'm just trying to, you know, I'm trying
- 10:32Speaker 4: to learn something and you know, try to get maybe
- 10:34Speaker 4: some feedback from the listeners. But how is that marketing
- 10:37Speaker 4: much different than alcohol? I mean that's also everywhere every billboards, commercials,
- 10:42Speaker 4: and that is alcohol is also addictive. There are people
- 10:44Speaker 4: that can have a beer or two and be fine,
- 10:46Speaker 4: and then some people ruin their lives. You know, what's
- 10:48Speaker 4: your idea on that?
- 10:49Speaker 3: Give you the example? So when it comes to alcohol,
- 10:53Speaker 3: if you have a drinking problem, or if you're alcoholic,
- 10:55Speaker 3: I see the signs. I see it in your face,
- 10:58Speaker 3: see it in your body, smell it, et cetera, et cetera.
- 11:02Speaker 1: If you have a gambling problem, I can't see that.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Your body's not I mean, you may not eat as
- 11:10Speaker 3: much anymore, or you may you know, maybe other things.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But if you have if you told me a I
- 11:15Speaker 3: haven't paid my mortgage in two months because I gambled
- 11:17Speaker 3: all the money away, I wouldn't physically know that. When
- 11:21Speaker 3: you have a drug problem, I can physically see you
- 11:23Speaker 3: have a drug problem. If somebody's on coke or heroine,
- 11:26Speaker 3: I can see. I can literally see those things. When
- 11:29Speaker 3: it comes to gambling, you can't see that problem. You
- 11:32Speaker 3: can only see if somebody's car gets declined, or somebody's
- 11:36Speaker 3: acting to borrow lars of money, or somebody's acting very erratic,
- 11:40Speaker 3: but you can't see the issue that they have like
- 11:44Speaker 3: you can't see it. And that's the difference. So when
- 11:46Speaker 3: it comes to gambling, you're correct. The marketing is very
- 11:52Speaker 3: similar to cigarettes, alcohol, all those stuff we probably shouldn't
- 11:55Speaker 3: be doing. But with the effects of those other things,
- 11:59Speaker 3: you can see a whole lot more than gambling. Gambling
- 12:02Speaker 3: you only don't see the effects until you're out with
- 12:06Speaker 3: someone and this one's car declines. So you're getting lunch
- 12:09Speaker 3: or whatever or dinner and it's like a small knout
- 12:12Speaker 3: to like twenty bucks and the car don't go through.
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's like, oh, something's that right here? What's going on?
- 12:19Speaker 3: That's how that works.
- 12:21Speaker 4: That's a damn good point, you know. I I honestly,
- 12:23Speaker 4: I haven't even considered that because, yeah, at the end
- 12:26Speaker 4: of the day, you have to be a really high
- 12:28Speaker 4: functioning you know. I guess what trained alcoholic. I guess
- 12:33Speaker 4: you'd call it to hide that from friends of family,
- 12:35Speaker 4: and people do it all the time, you know. Obviously
- 12:37Speaker 4: people don't find out that their friends are drug addicts
- 12:39Speaker 4: or alcoholics for for years even, but that's not the norm. Yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 4: I you know. So just an anecdote on how I've
- 12:47Speaker 4: approached gambling for boxing. Number one is boxing is the
- 12:50Speaker 4: only sport I care about, So that's the only sport
- 12:52Speaker 4: I've ever gambled up, period, and I have sort of
- 12:55Speaker 4: rules just to kind of keep myself in line. Number
- 12:57Speaker 4: one is that I only bet on fighters that I know,
- 13:00Speaker 4: and if I have an idea of their skills, so
- 13:02Speaker 4: I can, you know, kind of make a judgment call.
- 13:03Speaker 4: You never know. It's always a lot of it is luck,
- 13:06Speaker 4: but with boxing it's a lot more skilled than like,
- 13:08Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe a black check table or a
- 13:10Speaker 4: slot machine. And then things like I will always typical
- 13:14Speaker 4: always bet on the underdog because I want to make
- 13:15Speaker 4: more money than from what I put in, so I'm
- 13:18Speaker 4: not putting in like five hundred bucks to make fifty
- 13:20Speaker 4: or whatever. And then finally, I have to really really
- 13:24Speaker 4: believe that my guy can win, like if I feel
- 13:26Speaker 4: it in my heart of hearts. Then if I don't
- 13:29Speaker 4: feel it in my heart of hearts that my guy
- 13:31Speaker 4: can win, then I just won't bet. So it's pretty
- 13:35Speaker 4: easy for me to not get too over into it
- 13:38Speaker 4: because I'm not going to put money on some random
- 13:41Speaker 4: boxer just because I may have even like heard his
- 13:43Speaker 4: name before. That's not enough, you know, I have to
- 13:46Speaker 4: have an idea of how they move and what their
- 13:48Speaker 4: competition is like. But honestly, like I'll be honest, I
- 13:52Speaker 4: consider myself lucky that I don't have that draw toward
- 13:56Speaker 4: gambling like that what I guess we'd call it that
- 14:00Speaker 4: that anxiety about needing to place a bet, but you
- 14:03Speaker 4: know a little bit, I've got impulse control issues in
- 14:05Speaker 4: other areas, so I do have an idea of what
- 14:08Speaker 4: it's like to just really feel anxiety about needing something.
- 14:12Speaker 4: But that's never never been the case. But I'm curious.
- 14:16Speaker 4: You know, we've heard a lot of stories about uh
- 14:18Speaker 4: NBA and C double A players getting in trouble for gambling.
- 14:22Speaker 4: What do you think boxers have it? Because the boxing
- 14:25Speaker 4: world has been so corrupt? Is it just that?
- 14:28Speaker 3: So the boxing thing is weird? Because here's the thing.
- 14:34Speaker 3: So let's say you let's say we go to a fight,
- 14:38Speaker 3: and let's say we know, not un necessarily the headliner,
- 14:43Speaker 3: but let's say the second or third fight.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Right, Let's say it's somebody kind of up and coming,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but they got a name. Let's say I'm trying to
- 14:52Speaker 1: think of a good example, like an up and comer bay.
- 14:55Speaker 4: A million of argus.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Maybe yeah, okay, there you go, yep, yep. So let's
- 14:59Speaker 3: say we know something that no one else knows. Good, bad,
- 15:04Speaker 3: are indifferent. Let's say we know he had a shitty camp.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Let's say we know he's hurt. Let's say we know that, hey,
- 15:11Speaker 3: he broke up with his girlfriend, whatever, whatever it might be.
- 15:15Speaker 3: So what happens is we have that information, we can
- 15:18Speaker 3: bet on that. How we feel that happens a lot
- 15:21Speaker 3: in Vegas. Also, the other thing is it doesn't happen
- 15:25Speaker 3: as much anymore. But I've been told that a lot
- 15:27Speaker 3: of fights were fixed, a lot of guys would take dives,
- 15:30Speaker 3: a lot of guys would lose fights. I've been told that.
- 15:33Speaker 3: I've never seen it myself. I've heard things. But a
- 15:36Speaker 3: lot of times you would see a guy that's like
- 15:38Speaker 3: a four to one favorite, a five to one favorite,
- 15:40Speaker 3: lose and then people at the other side and clean up.
- 15:43Speaker 1: That doesn't happen that much anymore, because honestly.
- 15:45Speaker 3: We don't have that many upsets like that, like most
- 15:48Speaker 3: of the fights that are constructed or constructed for a purpose,
- 15:51Speaker 3: So we don't. But that's kind of the other way,
- 15:53Speaker 3: like we'd see boxing. Really, we don't have a whole
- 15:57Speaker 3: lot of fixed things. Now, I will say this, there's
- 16:00Speaker 3: a big fight, put something on the draw. Put something
- 16:04Speaker 3: on the draws, just like twenty to one, fifteen to one,
- 16:06Speaker 3: put something on the drawing. Nothing crazy is fifteen twenty bucks, hirebucks,
- 16:11Speaker 3: whatever whatever is in your wheelhouse. Because one thing that
- 16:14Speaker 3: will happen is if it's a draw. People who bet
- 16:17Speaker 3: both sides loose because you bet if you bet a draw,
- 16:20Speaker 3: whether you're betting on a draw, you know, Now there's
- 16:23Speaker 3: ways you can bet it where you get your money back.
- 16:25Speaker 3: But if you bet certain things, you know, if you
- 16:28Speaker 3: if you bet ko or bet by whatever, you lose.
- 16:31Speaker 3: So there's certain things that happen. But for the most part,
- 16:35Speaker 3: boxing being fixed was a thing of like old days,
- 16:40Speaker 3: that's the biggest thing. Now there's fights that happen today
- 16:45Speaker 3: where we just have a lot more information that come
- 16:47Speaker 3: through the boxing circles. So if you hear, hey, this
- 16:50Speaker 3: underdog gives a live bet because whatever reason, all right,
- 16:54Speaker 3: that's cool.
- 16:55Speaker 1: But for the most part, the way.
- 16:57Speaker 3: These fights are made these days, we're not gonna see
- 16:59Speaker 3: ahole lot of upsets anymore.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's interesting you mentioned the draw because that's
- 17:04Speaker 4: usually what I do as well, Like I'll put five
- 17:06Speaker 4: bucks on two to three fights for a draw, because
- 17:10Speaker 4: then at max I'm betting fifteen bucks. If I lose
- 17:12Speaker 4: fifteen bucks, I'm okay. But if I win, I'm making
- 17:14Speaker 4: like what fifty So it's not gonna hurt me to
- 17:18Speaker 4: lose the fifteen bucks plus. Also, it's not going to
- 17:20Speaker 4: change my damn life to win you know, the fifty
- 17:22Speaker 4: or sixty or whatever. You know, I'm also lucky enough
- 17:26Speaker 4: not to not to flex on nobody. But you know,
- 17:28Speaker 4: unless I'm winning a couple one hundred from a match
- 17:30Speaker 4: like that, I don't know my life's gonna be the same.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Right But even that, you know, I definitely am not
- 17:37Speaker 4: gonna get to the point where I'm bidding multiple hundreds,
- 17:40Speaker 4: you know, to try to win thousands or anything like that.
- 17:43Speaker 4: That's just not my approach. But yeah, I mean I
- 17:47Speaker 4: so personally just the way I see the world. Like
- 17:50Speaker 4: I don't think that a lot of things should be
- 17:52Speaker 4: straight up like illegal legal light gambling. I don't think
- 17:55Speaker 4: they should be banned. I think that there should be
- 17:57Speaker 4: definitely a lot of information put out on the risks
- 18:01Speaker 4: of things, right like with alcohol, like with cigarettes, Like
- 18:04Speaker 4: you know, I don't think we should absolutely ben cigarettes,
- 18:07Speaker 4: but I think it should be absolutely clear that it
- 18:09Speaker 4: could that it could ruin your life and kill you.
- 18:12Speaker 3: So like this, in high school, we took a health class, right,
- 18:15Speaker 3: but everybody took health one on one or health whatever
- 18:18Speaker 3: that was right, whether it's for a semester or full year,
- 18:21Speaker 3: whatever may have been. There is no health for gambling.
- 18:24Speaker 3: There is no warrant health class about cigarettes. Here about drugs,
- 18:27Speaker 3: are about alcohol, are about all bunch of stuff. There
- 18:31Speaker 3: is no health for gambling is there's none, There's no
- 18:34Speaker 3: you gotta you gotta one eight hundred number, you got
- 18:36Speaker 3: gamblers anonymous, but that isn't being taught in school. However,
- 18:39Speaker 3: the people who are gambling are younger and younger because
- 18:42Speaker 3: what are they on tablet and phones all day? They're
- 18:44Speaker 3: getting advertising marketed.
- 18:46Speaker 1: To every day.
- 18:48Speaker 3: So with all that being said, you got to look
- 18:50Speaker 3: at like this, they're grooming the next generation to gamble.
- 18:55Speaker 3: They're they're already put on phones and applications and apps
- 18:59Speaker 3: and tablets all so they know what they're doing. There's
- 19:04Speaker 3: no precaution for that. There is nothing for that. That'st
- 19:07Speaker 3: most scariest part because the youth don't really know. But
- 19:11Speaker 3: you've loved sports. I love being in prediction marketing all
- 19:14Speaker 3: that stuff. That's where I think the signs are really
- 19:18Speaker 3: bad is that the youth's involved, and I don't think
- 19:21Speaker 3: that's going to end well.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I have no problem with regulation on things like
- 19:25Speaker 4: of course you have to be twenty one to buy alcohol.
- 19:27Speaker 4: When we were growing up, it was eighteen for cigarettes,
- 19:29Speaker 4: and now it's twenty one as well. And yeah, I
- 19:33Speaker 4: just to show that we did do some research. I
- 19:35Speaker 4: found the stat here that said, in an article the
- 19:39Speaker 4: National Council on Problem Gambling found that thirty three percent
- 19:42Speaker 4: of respondents aged twenty one to forty four had placed
- 19:45Speaker 4: the sports bet before turning twenty one, legal age to gamble.
- 19:49Speaker 4: So we've already got kids, and of course you know
- 19:51Speaker 4: there's underage drinking, there's kids smoking. It's not very that's
- 19:54Speaker 4: not a surprise to me at all. But with everything
- 19:58Speaker 4: that we've been talking about again, the signs and the
- 20:00Speaker 4: health issues with alcohol and cigarettes that aren't present in gambling,
- 20:05Speaker 4: it just kind of seems like it's it's definitely a
- 20:08Speaker 4: bigger problem for the youth than possibly those other things are.
- 20:13Speaker 4: But another thing too, you could you could catch a
- 20:16Speaker 4: seventeen year old kid walking into the casino or with
- 20:19Speaker 4: a bookie, but you can't. How do you catch a
- 20:22Speaker 4: seventy year old with a spart vote?
- 20:24Speaker 3: So it's different. Now, it's way different. At seventeen, we're
- 20:28Speaker 3: talking about like twelve. I mean, there's a kid I
- 20:31Speaker 3: mean it's way seventeen, is being nice. We're talking about
- 20:34Speaker 3: like ten, eleven, twelve. Because thing about like this, if
- 20:38Speaker 3: you're into sports and you like the numbers, and you remember,
- 20:41Speaker 3: all these kids are somewhat smart, so they do everything analytically.
- 20:45Speaker 3: They're doing all the AI stuff with numbers and results
- 20:48Speaker 3: and all that stuff. If that's they know and that's
- 20:51Speaker 3: what they're into, by the time they're ten, they're gonna
- 20:53Speaker 3: know what to do and how to go about it,
- 20:56Speaker 3: et cetera, et cetera. Like it's starting way, way younger,
- 20:59Speaker 3: and there's really a way to stop it because even
- 21:01Speaker 3: if they're not betting on obviously they can't bet on
- 21:03Speaker 3: their own account, they're finding a way to feed that
- 21:05Speaker 3: information out of someone who can.
- 21:07Speaker 1: And that's the thing that's scary, Like that's the thing
- 21:09Speaker 1: where it's.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Like, man, we're really we're really developing a bunch of gamblers.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And asked not we need to be developing?
- 21:18Speaker 4: Yeah, And I realized I didn't know this, but I
- 21:21Speaker 4: realized that during the Benavitas fight, where you know, my
- 21:23Speaker 4: buddies and I were talking about betting when we were
- 21:25Speaker 4: watching that. You know, I typically went to DraftKings and
- 21:28Speaker 4: I usually, like I said, bet one person to win.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Maybe I'll bet like for Benavetas to win in round
- 21:33Speaker 4: nine or something like that, right right, But I realized somebody,
- 21:36Speaker 4: my buddy, was using vandul. They have all kinds of
- 21:38Speaker 4: crazy shit on there. It was just like, oh, Benavetas
- 21:40Speaker 4: to win by knockout in the first minute of any round.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Like it got so detailed, and I don't know, I
- 21:46Speaker 4: could see people getting sucked into that and being like
- 21:48Speaker 4: what if this? What if that? Placing multiple bets on
- 21:50Speaker 4: multiple different kinds of things, that's just crazy. That's crazy.
- 21:55Speaker 3: But I mean, well, there's like thousands of bets that
- 21:58Speaker 3: you can make right on, like everything, every minute show
- 22:02Speaker 3: of the game you can bet on. So and they're
- 22:04Speaker 3: turning that process into almost every game or every live event.
- 22:08Speaker 3: That's the scary part. Like Houston be you could bet
- 22:11Speaker 3: like the game results, maybe the score of the game,
- 22:15Speaker 3: and maybe at the halftime or whatever.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Now, like you said, you bet every round, you can bet.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Every There's so much you can bet now to where
- 22:22Speaker 3: it's like it's definitely the houses a manager because the
- 22:25Speaker 3: more you bet, the more you lose. The idea when
- 22:27Speaker 3: it comes to gambling is this You want to hit
- 22:29Speaker 3: big and walk away. You don't want to keep nibbling,
- 22:33Speaker 3: nibbling nibbling, you will get God.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Well, I don't think that there's any way to put
- 22:39Speaker 4: the genie back in the bottle, as they say, and
- 22:41Speaker 4: kind of you know, make it so make it illegal
- 22:44Speaker 4: or bean it now. But I mean what it's what's
- 22:46Speaker 4: your opinion, as as somebody's been doing this a long time,
- 22:48Speaker 4: what we can do to avoid these issues going forward.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I think people need to know the pitfalls of gambling.
- 22:53Speaker 3: I think people need to understand that yes, it's not drugs,
- 22:57Speaker 3: it's not alcohol, but it's what it can lead to.
- 23:00Speaker 3: I think people got to gain more responsibly. I also
- 23:03Speaker 3: think when it comes to kids, you got to give
- 23:05Speaker 3: them a full breakdown of how this works. You gotta
- 23:09Speaker 3: give a breakdown, Hey, this is what can happen if
- 23:12Speaker 3: you go down this road. And if this is not
- 23:14Speaker 3: done in my moderation. You want to make sure you
- 23:18Speaker 3: allow people to understand, Hey, this can be done, but
- 23:22Speaker 3: do it moderation right now. I think it's a free
- 23:25Speaker 3: for all because everyone's trying to get rich, everybody's trying
- 23:27Speaker 3: to do things.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Also, not to make this a political show. But the
- 23:30Speaker 1: way the world is.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Right now, when things like they are now, people tend
- 23:34Speaker 3: to gamble because they feel that they're trying to get
- 23:36Speaker 3: out of their situation. So they're betting on more parlays,
- 23:39Speaker 3: they're betting on more long shot things because they feel
- 23:42Speaker 3: if twenty bucks or one hundred bucks or fifty bucks
- 23:44Speaker 3: can get them out of their situation, they're going to
- 23:47Speaker 3: do it. And that's a mass opinion. So if things
- 23:51Speaker 3: aren't going great in the world or in the country,
- 23:54Speaker 3: you can see more people doing than that. And that
- 23:56Speaker 3: starts at a younger age as well. So yeah, it's
- 23:58Speaker 3: a lot, man, it's totally a lot.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 4: And like I said, I'm lucky to be in a
- 24:03Speaker 4: position now. I'm forty years old now, and you know,
- 24:04Speaker 4: I got my life pretty well situated that if I
- 24:07Speaker 4: spend twenty bucks and I make a hundred, like hey,
- 24:10Speaker 4: that's that's you know, a couple more drinks, you know,
- 24:12Speaker 4: a couple of rounds from my friends. But at a
- 24:14Speaker 4: time when you're broke as hell and you think you
- 24:16Speaker 4: can make a hundred, and that can make the difference.
- 24:18Speaker 4: And like whether you eat that day or not, the
- 24:20Speaker 4: people can get desperate enough to a lot of crazy shit,
- 24:23Speaker 4: So I definitely understand that. I mean, yeah, no matter
- 24:26Speaker 4: what I think for anything, I think more education is
- 24:29Speaker 4: better for anything. Like I said, withoutcohol, segrets, et cetera.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Don't think banning it or making it full on you know, legal,
- 24:37Speaker 4: but there are ways to limit and keep kids from
- 24:40Speaker 4: accessing it and just wait till they're you know, reasonable
- 24:43Speaker 4: adults with with the understanding. And yeah, I think especially
- 24:46Speaker 4: these days, the education is losing compared to the access
- 24:51Speaker 4: of online gambling app gambling. I feel like it'd be
- 24:55Speaker 4: a bit hypocritical to not admit that, you know, we
- 24:57Speaker 4: also talk about it and feed into it because we
- 24:59Speaker 4: talk about the and that's something that I have wanted
- 25:02Speaker 4: to actually do more for the show's talk about the
- 25:04Speaker 4: betting odds on matches, just because I know that there
- 25:06Speaker 4: is a demographic there. But I mean, do you feel
- 25:09Speaker 4: that personally that you're a little conflicted about that or.
- 25:12Speaker 3: No, because we have to talk about the betting odds
- 25:14Speaker 3: because the betting odds is also part.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Of the match, like it's part of boxing. So it's
- 25:19Speaker 1: not like.
- 25:20Speaker 3: We're going out of the ordinary and providing that we
- 25:22Speaker 3: have to talk about that for a lot of reasons,
- 25:24Speaker 3: because if it's not a close, close fight, we have
- 25:27Speaker 3: to explain why the odds are what they are. So basically,
- 25:32Speaker 3: if Tarance Crawford is a three to one favorite over
- 25:35Speaker 3: Boots and it's we got to explain.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Why we have to give it a why.
- 25:40Speaker 3: If David vi Videz is gonna fight Ousik and he's
- 25:43Speaker 3: gonna be a slight underdog, we got to explain why
- 25:46Speaker 3: that is.
- 25:47Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 25:48Speaker 3: So the betting line, it is not always right, and
- 25:51Speaker 3: we both know, but the betting line gives a good
- 25:54Speaker 3: barometer over who should win the fight, and in some
- 25:58Speaker 3: cases now the betting line it gets weird at times
- 26:01Speaker 3: because they know how many people may bet for one
- 26:04Speaker 3: box over another. So like Canelo's lines just be flawed
- 26:07Speaker 3: because you would have a lot of people bet Canelo
- 26:10Speaker 3: for obvious reasons. He had a huge population, huge fan population,
- 26:14Speaker 3: very well liked, well named, so when he's a favorite,
- 26:17Speaker 3: he's gonna get a lot of money coming in. So
- 26:19Speaker 3: they can set the line a certain way, still get
- 26:22Speaker 3: the action, and that's all good, but when it comes
- 26:24Speaker 3: to regular fights, When it comes to regular fights, from line,
- 26:27Speaker 3: because a good barometer on who's actually favored to win
- 26:31Speaker 3: this fight.
- 26:33Speaker 4: God, well, you know we did say it's gonna be
- 26:35Speaker 4: as short I could. I could keep talking this about
- 26:37Speaker 4: this for another hour with you, but we'll wrap it
- 26:39Speaker 4: up here. You know, we'll just say all in with this,
- 26:42Speaker 4: and I'll say that gambling isn't for everybody, just like
- 26:44Speaker 4: alcoholism for everybody, just like cigarettes is it for everybody.
- 26:47Speaker 4: And if you're the type of person who really shouldn't
- 26:51Speaker 4: be gambling and is getting into it, ask for help.
- 26:54Speaker 4: You know, I've found you can look up gambling helpline online,
- 26:58Speaker 4: but I found a National Problem GM hotline. You can
- 27:01Speaker 4: call our text one eight hundred my reset that's twenty
- 27:03Speaker 4: eight hundred six ninety seven three seven three eight if
- 27:06Speaker 4: you need help. And yeah, if you're getting to the
- 27:08Speaker 4: point where you're feeling anxious about putting on a bet,
- 27:11Speaker 4: anxious about needing to make more money through gambling, uh,
- 27:15Speaker 4: just take stop first of all, stop right there, don't
- 27:19Speaker 4: get too into the weeds, and call the helpline and
- 27:22Speaker 4: talk to friends, talk to family, make sure people know
- 27:24Speaker 4: that you're having trouble, and yeah, just reach out, man.
- 27:29Speaker 4: But yeah, you know, there's this is a very very
- 27:31Speaker 4: complex thing that we're gonna I'm I feel like this
- 27:34Speaker 4: is going to keep coming up more and more with
- 27:36Speaker 4: the show more often, and you know, if there's bigger issues,
- 27:39Speaker 4: we'll add a segment here and there to talk about it,
- 27:42Speaker 4: just because I think it is important because we are
- 27:44Speaker 4: a sports show and you can't separate the two anymore.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Sports and sports betting. That's it. It's interlocked, and it
- 27:52Speaker 4: might be like that forever. So Jamison, where can people
- 27:55Speaker 4: find you on social media?
- 27:56Speaker 1: On Twitter at the Jamison.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Of course, our showing once a week for the next
- 28:01Speaker 3: few months, but we're always here. Were gonna be providing
- 28:03Speaker 3: a lot of insight and we can always talk. I
- 28:04Speaker 3: have a Part two about this. It's a very big conversation.
- 28:07Speaker 3: And when it comes to boxing, like there's box Watching
- 28:11Speaker 3: a competitive boxing match in general is very fun. Watching
- 28:15Speaker 3: competitive boxing match money online is a whole different high.
- 28:19Speaker 3: So with all that being said, we meant to a
- 28:21Speaker 3: part two one of these days. But glad to give
- 28:24Speaker 3: him some insight on it, Glad to make sure that
- 28:26Speaker 3: people have a better idea about sports betting and how
- 28:30Speaker 3: it applies to boxing.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, and yeah, we're not gonna be We're not
- 28:34Speaker 4: gonna bullshit you and say that it's not fun to
- 28:37Speaker 4: bet on a fight or a sports match. You know
- 28:38Speaker 4: it does. It's a it's a different kind of experience,
