- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and go back to our own Chad
- 0:02Speaker 1: program now. And Chad, I was just talking with Byron
- 0:05Speaker 1: York as we were earlier about how this is going
- 0:07Speaker 1: to look moving forward between now in November and what
- 0:11Speaker 1: could happen and what will not happen as far as
- 0:14Speaker 1: trying to fill his shoes.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I think what's going to be very interesting
- 0:19Speaker 2: is to see whether or not whoever they appoint is
- 0:22Speaker 2: also somebody who wants to be the Senator from South
- 0:25Speaker 2: Carolina and run in the primary. A lot of times
- 0:28Speaker 2: they want to have the same person. They want to
- 0:30Speaker 2: have that kind of you know, continuity. You know, we
- 0:34Speaker 2: do have caretaker senators. There's one right now. Alan Armstrong
- 0:38Speaker 2: is the Republican Senator from Oklahoma. After you know, Mark
- 0:43Speaker 2: Wayne Mullen was named the Homeland Security secretary and you
- 0:47Speaker 2: know he's not running, you know, this fall for that position,
- 0:51Speaker 2: you know, but there's going to be an election in
- 0:53Speaker 2: South Carolina and excuse me, in Oklahoma this fall, and
- 0:56Speaker 2: you know, Alan Armstrong is not part of that. Kevin Hearn,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the Republican congressman, is running there and it's kind of
- 1:02Speaker 2: the odds on favor to take that seat. In Oklahoma.
- 1:04Speaker 2: So we do have these caretaker senators from time to time,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and that's something we're probably going to have in this case.
- 1:10Speaker 2: But again whether or not that you know, if you
- 1:12Speaker 2: appoint somebody, what that often does is gives them a
- 1:15Speaker 2: little bit of a leg up in the prim area
- 1:17Speaker 2: and then certainly in the general election, so you know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: again you might have that special election. And going on again,
- 1:24Speaker 2: I'm just kind of struck by the fact that Lindsay
- 1:27Speaker 2: Graham had been overseas and you know, was working on
- 1:31Speaker 2: this Ukraine deal. Here, we've just gotten a statement here
- 1:34Speaker 2: in the past couple of minutes from Tim Scott, who's
- 1:37Speaker 2: the other Republican Senator from South Carolina. He says, South
- 1:40Speaker 2: Carolina lost a statesman, and I've been lost a friend.
- 1:43Speaker 2: My prayers are with his sister and the rest of
- 1:45Speaker 2: the family. From his humble beginnings to the Senate floor,
- 1:48Speaker 2: Lindsay always led with faith family in South Carolina. First,
- 1:52Speaker 2: Lindsay remained committed to public service and doing what he loved.
- 1:54Speaker 2: He always introduced levity and brought wit to the most
- 1:58Speaker 2: challenging moments. That is from Tim Scott, the Republican centator
- 2:02Speaker 2: from South Carolina, and as you say, you know, he
- 2:05Speaker 2: had just been in Ukraine, you know, a couple of
- 2:08Speaker 2: days ago. I remember this was not last week, but
- 2:11Speaker 2: this was the last week before I think the last
- 2:13Speaker 2: you know, they've been out of session this week, but
- 2:14Speaker 2: so it was the week before the last time I
- 2:17Speaker 2: saw Lindsey Graham. I was trying to get a sense
- 2:19Speaker 2: of what they were going to try to do, maybe
- 2:21Speaker 2: on budget reconciliation. He was coming out of the Capitol
- 2:24Speaker 2: and I chased him out to a car and he
- 2:27Speaker 2: was trying to It was somebody had pulled a car
- 2:29Speaker 2: up and they were going to take him somewhere. I
- 2:31Speaker 2: don't know if it was the White House or where exactly,
- 2:34Speaker 2: but he was trying to get on the wrong side,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and he just did not have time to talk. He
- 2:37Speaker 2: was he was in a rush because he was always
- 2:39Speaker 2: going somewhere. And as we say, you know, he was
- 2:42Speaker 2: just speaking in front of tanks in Ukraine on Friday,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and here's what he said. When he was over a
- 2:48Speaker 2: meeting with Vladimir Zelensky and others in Ukraine. He said, quote,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I've never been more optimistic than I am today than
- 2:55Speaker 2: we have the formula to end this war. Help Ukraine
- 2:59Speaker 2: to be more or lethal. Let those supporting Russia to
- 3:02Speaker 2: know it's going to be a price to be paid
- 3:05Speaker 2: if you keep doing it and try to find an
- 3:07Speaker 2: off ramp, not to humiliate Putin, but to end this
- 3:10Speaker 2: war so that Ukraine will thrive and survive. And so
- 3:14Speaker 2: what you simultaneously have here too in addition to this
- 3:17Speaker 2: complication about what's going to happen with South Carolina Senate
- 3:20Speaker 2: and I mentioned, you know, a budget reconciliation. We talked
- 3:23Speaker 2: about that several times since he was the chair of
- 3:25Speaker 2: the Budget committee. But you know, what is going to
- 3:29Speaker 2: happen down in Ukraine when you have somebody who has
- 3:31Speaker 2: the President's here, who's somebody who has been there, has
- 3:35Speaker 2: been an advocate on this issue, and then suddenly thinks
- 3:38Speaker 2: that they're on a ramp maybe to end this war,
- 3:41Speaker 2: and then that person has taken out of the equation.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You know, this is probably a blow for ending the
- 3:46Speaker 2: war in Ukraine. What does this mean for Iran? You know,
- 3:51Speaker 2: as I said earlier, he was maybe one of the
- 3:53Speaker 2: biggest advocates in the President's ear you know, to order
- 3:57Speaker 2: the airstrikes starting in late February, and was very concerned
- 4:02Speaker 2: the night that they did not have those strikes. In fact,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I remember talking to him, you know, because he had
- 4:07Speaker 2: pushed for that some some weeks before, and they dialed
- 4:09Speaker 2: that off, and I was talking to him late at night,
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know. The ear strike started about two thirty three
- 4:14Speaker 2: o'clock in the morning Eastern time, and it was about
- 4:18Speaker 2: ten o'clock at night when I talked to him, and
- 4:20Speaker 2: I said, well, wait a minute, center, I said, it's
- 4:22Speaker 2: six o'clock in the morning over there. They shouldn't this
- 4:24Speaker 2: have already happened if you're going to do that, And
- 4:27Speaker 2: he's and you know, he had kind of given me
- 4:28Speaker 2: a wink and a nod that this was probably going
- 4:30Speaker 2: to happen pretty pretty quickly, but said, you know, they
- 4:34Speaker 2: really have this window right now in the next you know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: day or two to do this, you know. And so again,
- 4:40Speaker 2: what does this mean for the policy with Iran is
- 4:43Speaker 2: that you know, ramps back up and again you have
- 4:46Speaker 2: you know, you know, every day or two now a
- 4:49Speaker 2: set of episodes with you know, you know, shipping being
- 4:52Speaker 2: hit in the straight of war moves again. That changes things,
- 4:56Speaker 2: you know, and you just don't have people fill the
- 4:58Speaker 2: void right away. It's not like, you know, it's imagine
- 5:03Speaker 2: imagine being you know, you have a baseball team and
- 5:05Speaker 2: you have some superstar, and then that person goes to
- 5:08Speaker 2: another team, or that person, you know, is on the
- 5:11Speaker 2: injured list or something like that. You just don't fill
- 5:14Speaker 2: that void. And that's kind of where we are with
- 5:17Speaker 2: Lindsay Graham.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Ted, as you were speaking, we popped up a
- 5:20Speaker 1: statement from President Donald Trump where he was had only
- 5:24Speaker 1: nice things to say, calling Senator Graham one of the
- 5:28Speaker 1: greatest people and senators he's ever known. He said he
- 5:31Speaker 1: was always working hard at true American patriot and as
- 5:35Speaker 1: we were, as you were just discussing the foreign policy
- 5:38Speaker 1: issues that he was so passionate about Israel being one
- 5:42Speaker 1: of them. You know, we got a statement from Prime
- 5:44Speaker 1: Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier where he says he's grieving with
- 5:47Speaker 1: the American people over the loss of his dear friend,
- 5:50Speaker 1: Senator Lindsay Graham. He said in a recent meeting that
- 5:54Speaker 1: he was a great friend of Israel and a cherished
- 5:57Speaker 1: friend of his, and that Israel has no better friend
- 6:00Speaker 1: than Lindsay, what is your take on that and how
- 6:04Speaker 1: that might affect policy issues with Israel moving forward.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Well, again, that's another issue and is you know, one
- 6:11Speaker 2: of your other guests in a few moments ago, just
- 6:12Speaker 2: the idea that you had ben to Bennett Yaw, who
- 6:15Speaker 2: put out a statement. And I think that that demonstrates
- 6:18Speaker 2: Graham's commitment to Israel, but also his attention to what
- 6:22Speaker 2: was going on with the region Israel Iran, whether you
- 6:26Speaker 2: agreed with his more hawkish stance on this or not,
- 6:31Speaker 2: a demonstrated engagement. And you know that's going to be
- 6:34Speaker 2: the other loss in this, whether you liked Lindsay Graham
- 6:37Speaker 2: politically or not, somebody who had the ability to pick
- 6:41Speaker 2: up the phone and talk to Vladimir Zelenski and pick
- 6:44Speaker 2: up the phone and talk to Benjaminett Yaw who or
- 6:46Speaker 2: somebody else that just doesn't magically happen. That is something
- 6:50Speaker 2: that's cultivated over decades of service and many of these trips.
- 6:56Speaker 2: As I say, he was always going somewhere. In fact,
- 7:00Speaker 2: we were always you know, remarking that we would hear
- 7:03Speaker 2: from you know, sometimes his staff that he was going
- 7:05Speaker 2: to be overseas somewhere during a congressional recess and would
- 7:08Speaker 2: we want to have him on or he was going
- 7:10Speaker 2: to have a press conference there, and we would make
- 7:13Speaker 2: arrangements to bring in that press conference because we knew
- 7:15Speaker 2: there was probably going to be something newsworthy. Some of
- 7:18Speaker 2: this wasn't necessarily a tension seeking, but it was probably
- 7:21Speaker 2: going to be newsworthy because Lindsey Graham was involved, and
- 7:24Speaker 2: sometimes not just because he was the He certainly wasn't
- 7:27Speaker 2: the Secretary of State, but he was one of the
- 7:28Speaker 2: most influential figures in foreign policy. And so you know,
- 7:33Speaker 2: for the president, you know, he loses a founding board
- 7:36Speaker 2: and an ally somebody you know who was who had
- 7:39Speaker 2: some of those contacts as well. You know that that's
- 7:42Speaker 2: a hit for the administration as well.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know we discussed earlier, you know, moving forward,
- 7:49Speaker 1: how is this process going to look as far as
- 7:52Speaker 1: trying to find someone who can sort of take the
- 7:54Speaker 1: reins and really represent some of the issues that he
- 7:58Speaker 1: was passionate about. Do you can Does anyone come to
- 8:01Speaker 1: mind that you think could just slide in and take
- 8:04Speaker 1: over it were left.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It's not it's not obvious, you know. You know, again,
- 8:08Speaker 2: this comes over time. There are certainly people who who
- 8:11Speaker 2: who come up through the ranks, and I think that's why,
- 8:14Speaker 2: you know, in the middle of the night, had we
- 8:16Speaker 2: had another senator pass away, we probably would not be
- 8:19Speaker 2: in the middle of breaking news at this This was
- 8:21Speaker 2: an outsized senator in terms of his influence, and if
- 8:24Speaker 2: you really study the Senate, there have been a number
- 8:28Speaker 2: of figures over the years who were never the majority leader,
- 8:32Speaker 2: never the minority leader, but always somebody who had that
- 8:35Speaker 2: sort of influence. I think of Ted Kennedy. I certainly
- 8:38Speaker 2: think of Richard Russell from Georgia. You know, that's the
- 8:41Speaker 2: Russell Senator office building. People who had certain sway up there.
- 8:46Speaker 2: And Lindsey Graham is probably someone in John McCain certainly,
- 8:49Speaker 2: you know, that's somebody in that vein people who just
- 8:53Speaker 2: they just weren't another another, you know, senator. And here's chat.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna stop Chad. I'm going to stop you right here.
- 9:00Speaker 1: We're going to take a break. But if you're just
- 9:02Speaker 1: joining us, prominent Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham has
- 9:06Speaker 1: passed away at the age of seventy one, his office
- 9:08Speaker 1: putting out that statement earlier that he died from a
- 9:11Speaker 1: brief and sudden illness. More details should be coming in momentarily.
