- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It's timed out for car talk right here on K one,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the one you trust. Brad is on the slopes. We
- 0:12Speaker 1: have Lynn in here with us today. How are you doing,
- 0:13Speaker 1: young lady.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm doing good.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Brad put me on this one today.
- 0:17Speaker 2: So here we go, and you brought friends, I bring
- 0:21Speaker 2: some friends.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yes, today we're talking about be the light in Bartlesville,
- 0:26Speaker 3: and not in just words but with action, and so
- 0:29Speaker 3: I kind of want to give them, obviously their space
- 0:33Speaker 3: to speak to what they've got going on, and we'll
- 0:37Speaker 3: just kind of roll with it. So when people think
- 0:40Speaker 3: of Bartlesville, they don't always think of homelessness typically, right,
- 0:44Speaker 3: So it has been a growing problem and a need
- 0:47Speaker 3: in our community. So what's really on the ground right
- 0:51Speaker 3: now with what you guys are.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Seeing, Well, we're Keith and Christie macfail by the way,
- 0:57Speaker 4: I'm sorry, don't worry about people.
- 1:02Speaker 5: We're not joeing somebody else.
- 1:05Speaker 4: No, we we have been doing We started doing warming
- 1:08Speaker 4: shelters five years ago and that that's kind of what
- 1:12Speaker 4: got us into helping the homeless.
- 1:15Speaker 6: And so because we all saw it increasing around Bartisville, sadly.
- 1:20Speaker 4: And so we we've had a lot of people, We
- 1:23Speaker 4: did a lot of warming shelters, or this year we
- 1:25Speaker 4: finished our twenty first warming shelter, and so we we've
- 1:30Speaker 4: been involved.
- 1:30Speaker 5: In the homelessness for over five years.
- 1:33Speaker 4: And so when this opportunity came up, the hospital had
- 1:36Speaker 4: this big building over on Virginia and they end up
- 1:41Speaker 4: donating this building to us, fifty eight thousand square foot building.
- 1:45Speaker 4: And I cried, sure I would too. She asked, what,
- 1:51Speaker 4: what's the cost of the electric bill work brain works?
- 1:57Speaker 4: So yeah, anyway, it was it's it's been good. We
- 2:01Speaker 4: are we have residents there now full time. I think
- 2:04Speaker 4: we're up to about.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Sixteen well yes, so yeah, yeah, and a child.
- 2:10Speaker 4: We have a seven year old child. So we have
- 2:13Speaker 4: five women, nine men and a child.
- 2:17Speaker 3: What's your max because I know I have a personal.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Friend who is yes, okay, yes.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And I know that he reached out, so I was
- 2:27Speaker 3: just curious kind of like, what is your maximum capacity?
- 2:30Speaker 4: We can hold twenty two men and we can hold
- 2:33Speaker 4: up to about twelve women on the first floor.
- 2:36Speaker 5: On the first floor.
- 2:36Speaker 6: So the difference in ours is we have the lighthouse
- 2:40Speaker 6: and bartisol We love the lighthouse.
- 2:41Speaker 2: We're so thankful.
- 2:43Speaker 6: They help us so much, and you know, we have
- 2:45Speaker 6: great communication because we're dealing with all the same people,
- 2:49Speaker 6: but they are a little different in philosophy. We call
- 2:53Speaker 6: ourselves a poverty reduction center, so they got.
- 2:55Speaker 2: To work to stay with us.
- 2:56Speaker 6: And it's a twelve month time limit on our first
- 3:00Speaker 6: and so that's another difference. So we can you know,
- 3:04Speaker 6: when you say twenty two men, well that's twelve months,
- 3:06Speaker 6: and then we move on to the next and of
- 3:09Speaker 6: course that's rotating because not everybody came on the same day,
- 3:12Speaker 6: but we have you know, we talk about how many
- 3:14Speaker 6: we have now, but we've had nine leave and we've
- 3:18Speaker 6: been open with our residents for one hundred and fifteen days,
- 3:20Speaker 6: well hundred and.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Sixteen November fifth, third, November three.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Days.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Yes, yes, and that's yeah, that's the big what Christy said,
- 3:33Speaker 4: that's the big difference. And we went we went to Dallas,
- 3:37Speaker 4: we went to Oklahoma City, we went to Muskogi, we
- 3:39Speaker 4: went to Joplin, and we looked at all these different
- 3:42Speaker 4: places and we just brought what we thought would be
- 3:44Speaker 4: good here for Bartlesville. And so it's only a twelve
- 3:48Speaker 4: to fifteen month program first phase and the second phase
- 3:51Speaker 4: is another twelve to fifteen months and so and then
- 3:55Speaker 4: we were blessed and had the oldest church in Bartlesville
- 3:58Speaker 4: donated to us.
- 4:00Speaker 5: So, now which is church the Bible Church?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Caddy corner across the street.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Now and it's a beautiful church. And now that's where
- 4:10Speaker 4: the women and children for the second phase.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Will go to the church and the man will go upstairs.
- 4:16Speaker 4: And the second phase is Yeah, the second phase is
- 4:18Speaker 4: basically you have a full time job.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Now you're on your own.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You probably have a car by now, and you're able
- 4:25Speaker 4: to come and go as you want. You cook for
- 4:27Speaker 4: yourself upstairs, and it's just a it helps you get
- 4:32Speaker 4: back on your feet. You don't you pay us a
- 4:34Speaker 4: minimum rant of two hundred dollars a month, which is nothing,
- 4:37Speaker 4: all bills paid, and then we put your money back
- 4:40Speaker 4: into an account. And so when you graduate the second
- 4:43Speaker 4: phase of the program, you've got eight nine ten thousand
- 4:46Speaker 4: dollars saved up.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Nice.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, So I mean my question would be, I
- 4:52Speaker 3: mean you've already answered a few of them that I
- 4:55Speaker 3: had them. Yeah, No, I love it.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I love it.
- 4:59Speaker 3: What are the root causes that you are seeing locally? Like,
- 5:02Speaker 3: is it addiction, is it job loss?
- 5:05Speaker 2: Mental health?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Like, what is kind of the dynamic of the community
- 5:10Speaker 3: that you guys are supporting.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Well, you know, it's never what you think it is,
- 5:16Speaker 6: and it's different with each individual.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But the it's all of the above part of it.
- 5:21Speaker 6: We don't have as many addiction issues because if that's
- 5:24Speaker 6: the case, we send them on and we'll say, let's
- 5:26Speaker 6: get you to treatment and then come back and then
- 5:28Speaker 6: you'll be ready to go a lot of mental health.
- 5:31Speaker 6: But many of them when they come to us, they
- 5:34Speaker 6: know they need to be on a working well with
- 5:35Speaker 6: grand have a good system in place already with you know,
- 5:40Speaker 6: on medication seeking, counseling following that, because unless they're doing that,
- 5:43Speaker 6: they're really not ready for us yet.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Either.
- 5:45Speaker 2: We are pretty.
- 5:46Speaker 6: Fast paced, we've got classes to attend, we've got you know,
- 5:49Speaker 6: we go throughout our days in with structure. But the
- 5:53Speaker 6: hardest thing that I wasn't expecting is, you know, the
- 5:57Speaker 6: boundaries are hard for people. Expectations become too much, even
- 6:03Speaker 6: if they're just because it's not something they're used to
- 6:07Speaker 6: and so you know, we're the bossy parents they'd never
- 6:10Speaker 6: wished for. And it's one of those things where I'm
- 6:12Speaker 6: just like, no, we're doing X, Y and Z today
- 6:16Speaker 6: and we're getting this done, and some of it they
- 6:19Speaker 6: can't do it, or maybe they're just not ready to
- 6:22Speaker 6: have a certain boundaries set.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Typically people would obviously go to treatment and then in
- 6:29Speaker 3: with you guys, you were kind of the mitigator getting
- 6:33Speaker 3: their feet on the ground, figuring out how to get
- 6:35Speaker 3: them a job.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Yes, educating these get their ged get whatever certifications they
- 6:41Speaker 4: want to get, get their birth certificates, all the things
- 6:44Speaker 4: that you're missing to be someone out there. To get
- 6:48Speaker 4: a job, you have to have two forms of ID
- 6:50Speaker 4: to get a job, and so a lot of these people.
- 6:53Speaker 4: What's fascinating to me is the homeless steal from each
- 6:55Speaker 4: other and what I've ever seen in my life and
- 6:57Speaker 4: I do not understand it. I will never understand that
- 7:00Speaker 4: our building, building, we have.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Everything, well, we do, you know, we help them with that.
- 7:05Speaker 6: It's the basic, it's the basic everyday things that are
- 7:09Speaker 6: really hard, and you don't know that till you live
- 7:11Speaker 6: with them, you know, and you see their struggles and
- 7:14Speaker 6: just getting along with others and being able to have.
- 7:17Speaker 4: You have to make your bed, you have to take
- 7:18Speaker 4: a shower every day, you have to wash your clothes.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, and.
- 7:22Speaker 2: They don't like it.
- 7:23Speaker 6: You know, we have to clean them back theirs, so
- 7:26Speaker 6: they get an infraction. You know, they get a warning first,
- 7:29Speaker 6: but then we'll say this is going to be and
- 7:30Speaker 6: they sign that when they come in and they realize that.
- 7:33Speaker 6: But even simple things like push your cheer in when
- 7:36Speaker 6: people come into the building for a tour.
- 7:38Speaker 2: We greet everyone, We say hello, we make eye contact.
- 7:40Speaker 6: I mean, simple things that seem really easy for us,
- 7:46Speaker 6: but that they've just they.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Don't realize the importance of that.
- 7:49Speaker 6: And then also probably the biggest thing is just motivating them,
- 7:52Speaker 6: like nope, keep going, don't We don't all feel good
- 7:56Speaker 6: in the morning, we still get.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Up and when we see work, we I mean we
- 8:00Speaker 4: kind of it could be sewing, it could be would work,
- 8:03Speaker 4: it could be there's all kinds of things.
- 8:04Speaker 5: When we say you have to work three hours a day, it's.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Not like you're digging a ditch, but you might be
- 8:10Speaker 4: mowing the lawn when the grass starts growing.
- 8:12Speaker 5: So anyway, that's practical things.
- 8:15Speaker 4: And you know, one of the things too, I think
- 8:17Speaker 4: our hearts is that you know, I was a former
- 8:19Speaker 4: drug addict, So next month I'll be nineteen years clean
- 8:22Speaker 4: from cocaine. Amen, Yes, yes, so. And this woman stuck
- 8:27Speaker 4: by me when she didn't have to. And I was
- 8:31Speaker 4: homeless one time in my life too. So and then
- 8:34Speaker 4: we've lost our oldest son, Tyler, who was accidentally shot
- 8:37Speaker 4: sixteen years ago.
- 8:38Speaker 5: And so we know about loss, addiction, homelessness.
- 8:42Speaker 4: We've lived through it, and so we just want to
- 8:44Speaker 4: give back to the people because no one at this,
- 8:46Speaker 4: no one at be the Light Mission, makes any salary,
- 8:50Speaker 4: nobody makes any money.
- 8:51Speaker 5: It's all done by volunteers.
- 8:53Speaker 6: And I'll tell you our volunteers are amazing and we
- 8:55Speaker 6: couldn't afford him no if we had to pay them,
- 8:58Speaker 6: because they are.
- 9:00Speaker 2: But yeah, how many volunteers do you guys have?
- 9:01Speaker 6: Oh gosh, our list now is up to about twenty,
- 9:04Speaker 6: I believe. But you know, Corps volunteers, we've got a
- 9:07Speaker 6: good five or six that are just in it to
- 9:10Speaker 6: win it.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And I would say, you're.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Going to give a shout out to Sylvia McFarlane. She's
- 9:14Speaker 4: she's eighty three years old. Oh and she cooks every day,
- 9:18Speaker 4: she runs, She runs the place basically, so.
- 9:22Speaker 5: She's she's the boss.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Play she is she is, and everybody loves her, she's
- 9:26Speaker 6: got a lot of wisdom.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Well, how can you know we talked about churches and
- 9:32Speaker 3: the donation there, How can the community support you guys
- 9:38Speaker 3: more other than just getting awareness out there, like is
- 9:41Speaker 3: there needs your needs?
- 9:43Speaker 4: You know, when we had the last warning shelter open,
- 9:46Speaker 4: we were kind of running low on supplies, really low,
- 9:49Speaker 4: and we just put it out on Facebook, and I'm
- 9:51Speaker 4: telling you, the city of Bartlesville stepped up in a
- 9:55Speaker 4: humongous way.
- 9:56Speaker 5: We had trucks being delivered.
- 9:58Speaker 4: We got probably two thousand bags of chips because we
- 10:02Speaker 4: got fifty four gallons of water.
- 10:05Speaker 5: We got more i mean milk, and then we got
- 10:08Speaker 5: catters and cases and cases.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But our biggest drive is we need five hundred people
- 10:14Speaker 4: in Bartlesviil, Oklahoma to give twenty dollars a month that
- 10:17Speaker 4: pays for our bills.
- 10:19Speaker 6: That would be our operational costs for the year, and
- 10:21Speaker 6: that would help us not have to push the fundraising
- 10:23Speaker 6: and do all the things we have to do. Enough
- 10:25Speaker 6: of that for the build out the church that he
- 10:27Speaker 6: was talking about, it's great that it's the oldest church
- 10:30Speaker 6: has also got a lot of stuff to be done
- 10:32Speaker 6: to it to make it work for what we needed
- 10:35Speaker 6: to work.
- 10:35Speaker 5: And we have to give a lot of credit to
- 10:38Speaker 5: John Kaine. It's a Line Foundation, all the guys, all
- 10:42Speaker 5: of them.
- 10:42Speaker 4: But the Line Foundation and the Parsons Foundation, even though
- 10:46Speaker 4: maybe foundation out of Tulsa has given us money to
- 10:51Speaker 4: get the building where it's at today. And if you've
- 10:53Speaker 4: never been into Be the Light Mission, you have to
- 10:56Speaker 4: come in there because you don't get it until you
- 10:59Speaker 4: walk in the doors. It's amazing what we've done of
- 11:02Speaker 4: that building in the last three years.
- 11:05Speaker 6: I'll say to what people don't realize is we're also
- 11:08Speaker 6: almost like a Tulsa day center when a lot of
- 11:10Speaker 6: people are familiar with that because every day people can
- 11:13Speaker 6: come in off the street for showers and food and
- 11:15Speaker 6: resources and clothing, and we are super busy from ten
- 11:19Speaker 6: to two. Like when we leave here, it's a packed house.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yes, So that we're.
- 11:23Speaker 6: Doing besides the residents and getting them you know, off
- 11:27Speaker 6: the ground.
- 11:28Speaker 2: So we're doing we're covering a lot of ground.
- 11:31Speaker 3: What does the application process look like for someone who
- 11:35Speaker 3: is in need of you know, shelter.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Essentially it's about eight pages and then they have to
- 11:42Speaker 4: be interviewed by us. We have fifty nine people in
- 11:46Speaker 4: the wedding liss.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Right now, wow, now who have filled out the application,
- 11:50Speaker 6: So who have come in, filled out the application, turned
- 11:53Speaker 6: it in and so that's.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Those are the people that yes, you want to.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Be yeah, And it's now through some of them and
- 12:00Speaker 6: we read it and we're like, you're not ready for this,
- 12:03Speaker 6: but let me tell you where I think would be
- 12:04Speaker 6: a good fit to get you off the street. And
- 12:06Speaker 6: so then you know, we'll turn them to a sober
- 12:08Speaker 6: living home or to somewhere else, because.
- 12:11Speaker 5: We don't want to leave someone out on the streets.
- 12:13Speaker 5: That's the opposite of what we want.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I actually have.
- 12:19Speaker 3: A friend that I just met here and he called
- 12:25Speaker 3: me the other day and he's like, can I just
- 12:26Speaker 3: bring my bike to your house because he's living in
- 12:29Speaker 3: a mice infested home. He's staying at Johnstone Park. He
- 12:32Speaker 3: put his tin up and I'm like, I, I mean,
- 12:35Speaker 3: I have a heart for that too, Like you just
- 12:38Speaker 3: you can't like sleep on my couch.
- 12:40Speaker 6: You know, it's very hard, but it's very You just
- 12:43Speaker 6: have to be so careful. I mean, we've learned too,
- 12:45Speaker 6: and we get it a lot. The other day, you know,
- 12:48Speaker 6: screamed at we've had death threats. We've had all the
- 12:51Speaker 6: things he's been sure before because he turned us back
- 12:54Speaker 6: on because we do know them well. We've you know,
- 12:56Speaker 6: we're four years into like we know their mom, know
- 13:00Speaker 6: where they came from, we know when their parents got divorced.
- 13:02Speaker 3: We you know.
- 13:02Speaker 4: And it's not just a Christie talks about talk about
- 13:06Speaker 4: the generational because when people look at the homeless and Marlsville,
- 13:10Speaker 4: we have generations of families here.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yes, and I went to school.
- 13:14Speaker 6: We went to school with a lot of them, but
- 13:16Speaker 6: some of them as far back as elementary And I'm
- 13:18Speaker 6: just like, what you know. But it's nice because that's
- 13:21Speaker 6: how we build on it. I'll say, remember so and so,
- 13:23Speaker 6: remember that time at school when this happened, or you know,
- 13:26Speaker 6: different things that you can relate to them and just
- 13:28Speaker 6: build on that relationship.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah, because it is all relational. How you can help someone.
- 13:34Speaker 6: It's not a transaction of a monetary thing, even food
- 13:39Speaker 6: or clothes. At the end of the day, it's the
- 13:41Speaker 6: relationship that they're lacking. That's where they are truly bankrupt.
- 13:45Speaker 6: Is the relationship aspect of life. And so we just
- 13:48Speaker 6: try to build on that however we can. If it's
- 13:50Speaker 6: not with us we're going to find somebody else.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Sure, how do you go about like the difference between
- 13:56Speaker 3: enabling someone and structuring into, you know, the life that
- 14:02Speaker 3: they need to live.
- 14:03Speaker 2: So, yeah, that's a hard question. I learned when he was.
- 14:09Speaker 6: On drugs, which I didn't know anything about it. And
- 14:11Speaker 6: then he tells me this, you know, yeah, four days
- 14:14Speaker 6: before I give birth to our seventh child. And so
- 14:17Speaker 6: I'm like, Okay, I don't know what that means, but
- 14:20Speaker 6: this is not how this story's going to end. So
- 14:22Speaker 6: you need to go away and do whatever you need
- 14:25Speaker 6: to do. And then two classes learned about I learned
- 14:30Speaker 6: a lot about just drug addiction and how it's very
- 14:34Speaker 6: similar across the board, and how enabling is super common,
- 14:38Speaker 6: and so.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Learned a lot with that.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Now when people come in and they are struggling with
- 14:44Speaker 6: drugs and or if they're recovered, he cries with them.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Nine times out of ten.
- 14:49Speaker 6: I'm like, okay, you ready to get on the path though,
- 14:53Speaker 6: And I'll give you a plan because I'm not here
- 14:55Speaker 6: to be your friend.
- 14:56Speaker 2: You know, I'm not here.
- 14:57Speaker 6: To make you happy. I'm here to help you and
- 14:59Speaker 6: it doesn't always work out. Maybe you'll like me later.
- 15:02Speaker 6: So a lot of people especially are volunteers. Some of
- 15:05Speaker 6: them don't like the way we do things because we
- 15:07Speaker 6: are not enablers and we're nothing's a hand out, it's
- 15:10Speaker 6: all a hand up, and so that's kind of our
- 15:13Speaker 6: bottom line.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And they work for every little thing.
- 15:15Speaker 6: But at the end of the day, they end up
- 15:17Speaker 6: appreciating great and they feel confident in who they are.
- 15:21Speaker 2: And that's how you have to go about it.
- 15:23Speaker 3: I mean, you can't you can't enable somebody, you can't
- 15:26Speaker 3: pick somebody. They have to make that choice theirselves.
- 15:29Speaker 2: But it's hard to watch.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Yeah, you've got to want to change, and a lot
- 15:33Speaker 4: of people and we've seen it over the last four
- 15:35Speaker 4: and a half five years, we've seen a lot of
- 15:37Speaker 4: people get their lives together and make changes.
- 15:39Speaker 5: And now they're living in their own.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Apartments, they have a job, they got a car, and
- 15:44Speaker 4: if we didn't take the time just to give them
- 15:46Speaker 4: a hug or give them a sandwich, just.
- 15:48Speaker 2: One thing, one thing, you never know. It is a
- 15:52Speaker 2: fine line.
- 15:52Speaker 4: And really these people too, they don't they're not on
- 15:55Speaker 4: their medications, and so that's really one of the things
- 15:57Speaker 4: that we try to do more anything, is to get
- 15:58Speaker 4: them on back on their medications where they were living
- 16:03Speaker 4: somewhat of a normal life before they got off the medications.
- 16:06Speaker 3: So this is going to be another hard question. I'm
- 16:13Speaker 3: just curious, what is one uncomfortable truth our community needs
- 16:19Speaker 3: to hear about homelessness, and how do you balance that
- 16:21Speaker 3: with accountability and compassion for those with your advocates and
- 16:25Speaker 3: the delight residents.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Well, I sometimes can what's the word I'm looking for.
- 16:36Speaker 5: I'm very.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Upfront, and you're always going to know how I feel
- 16:42Speaker 4: when you leave me. It's not that I'm better than
- 16:46Speaker 4: anybody here, but I've went through what you're going through.
- 16:50Speaker 4: I've got more needle marks on my body than you
- 16:52Speaker 4: have hair on your head. So my compassion for the
- 16:56Speaker 4: drug users and the people out there is very high.
- 17:00Speaker 5: But also I'm not gonna I'm not gonna sugarcoat sugarcoated.
- 17:06Speaker 4: And and she's kind of like that too. But I
- 17:09Speaker 4: think the hardest thing that people need to realize is that, yes,
- 17:12Speaker 4: we've been you know, seven years ago, we didn't have
- 17:14Speaker 4: anybody homeless on the east side of town. Now they're
- 17:17Speaker 4: all on the east side of town, and they're all
- 17:19Speaker 4: over Bottles Viel now, and so you know, I think
- 17:23Speaker 4: the city does a pick count, they call it pick
- 17:26Speaker 4: which they're here one day and they just find people
- 17:30Speaker 4: who are homeless. And I think the city says fifty five,
- 17:32Speaker 4: it's sixty. It's way over one hundred and thirty people.
- 17:35Speaker 5: That are homeless.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I'm on the board at a GOPI and we feed
- 17:41Speaker 4: about three hundred thirty people.
- 17:44Speaker 2: You probably know my friend that I was mentioning, probably,
- 17:47Speaker 2: I'm sure, yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 4: And so every day we feed three twenty five people.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Not every one of those people are homeless. But just
- 17:54Speaker 4: because you you might be living in a shelter or
- 17:57Speaker 4: a home, it might not have running water.
- 17:59Speaker 5: You were talking, yeah, yeah, and so you know you
- 18:03Speaker 5: have a roof over your head. If that so.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I think the other hard thing.
- 18:10Speaker 6: Just being really honest, brutally honest with someone, but also
- 18:14Speaker 6: not continue to just give them money. I mean, we
- 18:17Speaker 6: always tell people please don't please, don't please donate to
- 18:21Speaker 6: a GAPE or the Lighthouse or US or Mary Martha's
- 18:25Speaker 6: or people that have been helping them for a very
- 18:28Speaker 6: long time and have a plan of action, because if
- 18:30Speaker 6: you're going to give them a twenty, it's probably not
- 18:32Speaker 6: going to go well, it's just not I mean, why
- 18:34Speaker 6: would it all of a sudden change their life, and
- 18:38Speaker 6: you know, if God tells you to do it, do it.
- 18:39Speaker 6: We're not saying that, but for the most part, please
- 18:43Speaker 6: let the organizations.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Runna McDonald's and give them a hamburger and some.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Food and then be ready for them to go. I
- 18:48Speaker 2: don't want to.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I mean, I think this we are sitting here for
- 18:52Speaker 3: whatever reason. Because this guy that I'm talking about I'm
- 18:56Speaker 3: not going to say his name, but he came over
- 18:58Speaker 3: and he was like, can I just have fun and like,
- 19:00Speaker 3: here's my car?
- 19:01Speaker 6: Oh gosh, I don't know if you know.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I mean, so.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 19:13Speaker 3: So if someone was obviously listening right now, or if
- 19:16Speaker 3: this was we're obviously going to push it out on
- 19:19Speaker 3: social media and everything like that. If they're stirred for
- 19:24Speaker 3: help and support, what is their next step?
- 19:27Speaker 2: What does that look like?
- 19:28Speaker 4: Well, we love people to come by and take a toure.
- 19:31Speaker 4: We love showing off the building and that's one thing that.
- 19:33Speaker 5: We love to do.
- 19:34Speaker 6: And if they want to volunteer, because then they can
- 19:36Speaker 6: see like, here's all these opportunities to volunteer. I mean,
- 19:38Speaker 6: we do, like he was saying, sewing classes, piano lessons, gardening.
- 19:42Speaker 6: We have chickens, we you know, landscaping, all these things
- 19:46Speaker 6: that we would love people that maybe retired and this
- 19:48Speaker 6: was an all love of theirs and they want to
- 19:50Speaker 6: work with people.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Because it's all about.
- 19:53Speaker 6: Community and when people want to help someone. Again, Yes,
- 19:57Speaker 6: donating is great and all that, and please pick your
- 20:00Speaker 6: your cause, but to actually get involved with someone and
- 20:03Speaker 6: see the change that you can produce and someone else
- 20:05Speaker 6: by giving you your time because they love to see. Oh,
- 20:08Speaker 6: these people actually care about me and they want to
- 20:10Speaker 6: have a conversation.
- 20:12Speaker 2: They love that more than anything.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, follow us on Facebook. Once a
- 20:17Speaker 4: month we do a pop up shop. She does a
- 20:19Speaker 4: pop up shop. I don't do.
- 20:20Speaker 2: People donate really nice things and parties. Sometimes I like
- 20:24Speaker 2: that he lifts things and live things.
- 20:26Speaker 4: But yeah, we do that every month to raise money
- 20:29Speaker 4: for the mission, because we're always raising money for the mission.
- 20:32Speaker 5: That's one thing that.
- 20:33Speaker 4: We found out over the last couple of years is
- 20:35Speaker 4: that we're you know, when it takes nine thousand dollars
- 20:39Speaker 4: a month to run that building, you've got to you
- 20:41Speaker 4: gotta raise money.
- 20:43Speaker 5: And so that's we have a really good pop up shop.
- 20:45Speaker 2: It's fun. People don'tate great things that you can't give
- 20:48Speaker 2: to the homeless. You can't.
- 20:50Speaker 6: But I'm like, we could make a cute little fun
- 20:52Speaker 6: shop and and you know that way, you're everybody.
- 20:54Speaker 2: It's a win win for everybody.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, So how do people donate?
- 20:59Speaker 2: What's the easiest way? Is it true your website?
- 21:02Speaker 6: Yes, we have a little QR code too on our
- 21:04Speaker 6: card which I did not bring in.
- 21:06Speaker 5: I can get your way or phone number.
- 21:08Speaker 6: Yes, and our phone number nine one eight two eight
- 21:11Speaker 6: eight zero zero zero nine or info at b dashthlight
- 21:16Speaker 6: dot org.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Yeah, and falls from Facebook and messages on Facebook. Be
- 21:21Speaker 4: the Light mission on Facebook. And that's the king sacking.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Unfortunately.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Well we won't be there twenty four seven, but someone
- 21:32Speaker 6: will be there.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Well.
- 21:33Speaker 5: One thing that all we always say is that I
- 21:36Speaker 5: know how it is.
- 21:36Speaker 4: I know how it feels to be hungry when your
- 21:39Speaker 4: stomach eats itself. And so we did not turn anybody
- 21:43Speaker 4: away for food.
- 21:44Speaker 6: I've tried to make the cutoff eleven that night it's twelve.
- 21:49Speaker 4: It's twelve, because it you know, people are hungry out there,
- 21:52Speaker 4: and I know we've got a lot of good.
- 21:53Speaker 5: We got so many good resources in the city.
- 21:56Speaker 4: It's unbelievable with the resources that we have and a
- 21:59Speaker 4: lot of people think, well, well, because Bartleswooll has so
- 22:01Speaker 4: many good resources, we're going to go up there and
- 22:04Speaker 4: we're getting people from Tulsa or wichitaal or all these
- 22:06Speaker 4: different cities. It's not really happened that way. It's not
- 22:09Speaker 4: we might get one out of.
- 22:12Speaker 6: One hundred if that would be surprised. We've got several.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Like you said, they've been here for generations.
- 22:20Speaker 2: It's very sad.
- 22:21Speaker 3: It is sad. It is sad, but you guys are
- 22:23Speaker 3: doing the Lord's work. So yeah, we are super appreciative
- 22:29Speaker 3: of your support. Talk a little bit about Dungeus and
- 22:34Speaker 3: how we partner with them, But we at Dungeus, we
- 22:37Speaker 3: obviously don't just sell cars.
- 22:38Speaker 2: We're very invested in the community.
- 22:40Speaker 3: We take care of our people, which is what Keith
- 22:44Speaker 3: and Christy. Christy are doing in the community. So we
- 22:49Speaker 3: want to make sure that they have the support that
- 22:51Speaker 3: they need. So you know, we have you know, car
- 22:55Speaker 3: inventory that you come in for service or.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Or purchase a vehicle, you're going to be taken care of.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Obviously it's a different market, but at the same time
- 23:07Speaker 3: we kind of have the same standard.
- 23:09Speaker 2: So we have a great.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Sales team who is ready to meet you where you are,
- 23:15Speaker 3: which is what Keith and Christie are doing. And we
- 23:19Speaker 3: appreciate the community that we serve and we really do
- 23:22Speaker 3: want to bring you the best service to you and
- 23:25Speaker 3: your families from A to Z. So I think that
- 23:28Speaker 3: translates really well with kind of your approach and we
- 23:32Speaker 3: appreciate you listening in. And you can find Dungeus Toyota
- 23:36Speaker 3: at nineteen eleven Southeast Washington Street. It's right across the
- 23:40Speaker 3: street from Walgreens and then stopping to be the Light.
- 23:44Speaker 3: The last question I have for you both is if
- 23:47Speaker 3: you have seasonal events or donation events that are kind
- 23:52Speaker 3: of I mean, obviously your door is always open, yes,
- 23:55Speaker 3: but if you have something that is organized where people
- 23:59Speaker 3: you know contribute, whether you know you talk about Angel
- 24:01Speaker 3: tree or whatever that looks like, Well, we.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Do every year we do a gift giveaway to children.
- 24:08Speaker 4: This year we gave away six hundred and fifty.
- 24:12Speaker 5: There was last year it was thirteen thirteen hundred gifts toys.
- 24:16Speaker 6: Yeah, but that's donated by Toys for Tots donates those.
- 24:22Speaker 6: I'll tell you what our biggest donation need is right now,
- 24:24Speaker 6: only because I was going through this yesterday. We get
- 24:28Speaker 6: a lot of people think hats, gloves, socks, underwear. Yes, great,
- 24:32Speaker 6: but we have plenty of those. Every man not every man.
- 24:35Speaker 2: A lot of men are.
- 24:36Speaker 6: Thirty two thirty four gene and we do not have
- 24:38Speaker 6: any thirty two thirty four geens.
- 24:40Speaker 2: If you have any, please, yes, yes, I.
- 24:43Speaker 6: Mean, but I'm happy with used jeens and so were they,
- 24:46Speaker 6: so we cannot keep up with the jeans or the
- 24:48Speaker 6: men's shoes.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So thirty forty twos aren't going too well.
- 24:52Speaker 6: Hey, but I'll take them. We have some, and we
- 24:56Speaker 6: do need all sizes. But yes, we just we run
- 24:59Speaker 6: out of just a very practical thing. So I like
- 25:01Speaker 6: to say that and us is great.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Yes, we're inviting you to come out and take a look.
- 25:06Speaker 2: We'd love to.
- 25:07Speaker 5: We'll have Brad come out too. Yeah, our family.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Another generation as it doesn't fall on the ski slopes. No,
- 25:14Speaker 2: absolutely not, come back all healthy and all one piece.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Well, we appreciate you guys so much, and if you
- 25:23Speaker 3: guys have any questions, you can reach out to me
- 25:25Speaker 3: or be the light directly. Obviously you know where to
- 25:28Speaker 3: find us. So thank you for listening.
- 25:31Speaker 7: In all right, thank you very much Folks, you've been
- 25:33Speaker 7: watching and listening to our car Talk program right here
- 25:36Speaker 7: on K one, the one you trust. Right now, our
- 25:40Speaker 7: time is at nine fifty six Stay two, and we've
- 25:42Speaker 7: got news coming up from O n N and also
- 25:45Speaker 7: from CBS.
- 25:46Speaker 5: But first we'll have a take
