- 0:10Speaker 1: Wait true a checkup by everybody. Welcome back to Conspiracy Show.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I am your host, Adam Todd Brown joining me as
- 0:40Speaker 1: co host Connor mcspadden's here. How's it going, man.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It's good. We're the Ciscol and Eberts of the Am
- 0:46Speaker 2: Radio Ham Radio crowd. Damn right today.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we are putting on our movie reviewer hats
- 0:54Speaker 1: for this episode because, for one thing, David.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Told you was not a bad idea to invest in those.
- 1:01Speaker 1: For one thing, Dad has to take it easy because
- 1:04Speaker 1: I am fresh out of the hospital. Lost a little
- 1:06Speaker 1: weight last week in the form of the pointer toe
- 1:11Speaker 1: on my left foot. Had to have that chopped off.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It felt like a vanity toe. Anyway, I might have
- 1:16Speaker 1: the other one taken off just for feng shwe reasons.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Honestly, you found out that this is a total life hack.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You lose six ounces and you run slightly faster or something. Yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I just have an insane vertical now, but still too
- 1:32Speaker 1: unathletic to do anything with it. I can jump really high,
- 1:35Speaker 1: but I'll shatter my fucking ankle when I land.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Adam is sixth man for the Hornets.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I had a medical emergency. Spent my New Year's
- 1:44Speaker 1: Eve in the hospital. So there was no episodes last week.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Deal with it, Missy.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I told Adam whenever he needs I'm there. I'm right
- 1:52Speaker 2: there behind him. I stand behind him. Nine toes down.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Connor's been waiting to drop that joke. We talked about
- 1:58Speaker 1: it before we started recording.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I just sort of panicked and did it inelegantly here
- 2:03Speaker 2: because I was like, I didn't want to, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: I don't want to forget a fucking gem like that.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And I mean, how often is my foot going to
- 2:09Speaker 1: come up? Honestly, on the rest of the episode, I
- 2:11Speaker 1: feel obligated to tell people why there was no episode
- 2:15Speaker 1: last week.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I'm going to be referring to you as nine toes
- 2:17Speaker 2: Brown for decades.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it's certainly not what we're talking about this week.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, the conspiracy is word. Did Adam Togo sent a
- 2:27Speaker 2: medical wastepind somewhere in the.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no real conspiracy behind how my toe got infected.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I waited too long to go to the doctor. Actually
- 2:38Speaker 1: I didn't wait too long. Too long I might have
- 2:41Speaker 1: died because I had the flesh eating disease.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Which MRSA.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, all I've ever heard of that is you get
- 2:48Speaker 1: that and you're like dead three days later.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I've had a flesh eating disease before you can come
- 2:52Speaker 2: back from a flushing disease.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I mean, live and proof, buddy, I made it out.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's both of us now, Yeah, hell yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 2: survivors of body rot.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah. I wonder how many other conspiracy podcasts can say
- 3:05Speaker 1: that both hosts survived necrotizing fascitis. Probably quite a few.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Actually, I know this is a hack joke, but that
- 3:14Speaker 2: is literally a sick name for a band. As soon
- 3:16Speaker 2: as you said necrotizing fascitis, I just pictured in that
- 3:19Speaker 2: pile of Stick's metal font. Yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I didn't know what infection I actually had until I
- 3:25Speaker 1: overheard two nurses talking about it just in the room
- 3:29Speaker 1: in front of me, and I googled it and was like,
- 3:32Speaker 1: oh shit, that's something to have survived. That's right up
- 3:35Speaker 1: there with having smoke crack.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Honestly, nine toes crack smoking. You're like a fucking country
- 3:40Speaker 2: song bro.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So we're talking about a movie this week, a recent
- 3:44Speaker 1: movie that I'm pretty sure you didn't see anyone listening
- 3:48Speaker 1: to this. It made six hundred thousand dollars at the
- 3:51Speaker 1: box office.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I would give yourself some serious hipster points. If you've
- 3:54Speaker 2: seen this movie.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, if you are among the six hundred and seventy two,
- 4:00Speaker 1: seven hundred and eleven dollars that were spent at this movie,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I would love to hear from you. How did it happen?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Was it an accident? Was the movie he wanted to
- 4:08Speaker 1: see sold out? I don't know, but it's a twenty
- 4:11Speaker 1: twenty five film called Anniversary.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I'm going to figure out how many people that is.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So what fifteen bucks a ticket? Yeah, roughly if you're
- 4:19Speaker 2: one of the forty four, eight hundred and forty seven
- 4:22Speaker 2: people that actually went to the movies and saw.
- 4:24Speaker 1: This, that is so few people compared to just the
- 4:28Speaker 1: general population of the country. That's just not a lot.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Even the worst performing post on the Costco Guy's page
- 4:35Speaker 2: and it's got more use than forty four thousand. Oh
- 4:38Speaker 2: my god.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, this movie. It's got a decent cast. Stars Diane
- 4:42Speaker 1: Lane and Kyle Chandler. The guy from Friday Night Lights.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I always have to look up his name. He will
- 4:50Speaker 1: forever just be the guy from Friday Night Lights, just
- 4:52Speaker 1: like most people on the Wire will always just be
- 4:55Speaker 1: the guy from the Wire. Yeah, to me, I don't
- 4:57Speaker 1: know any of those actors. I mean, Michael K. Williams,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I guess, Andris Elba there's a few. But beyond that,
- 5:04Speaker 1: that's all just a bunch of dudes from the wire.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And same thing with Kyle Chandler. This movie, like we've
- 5:10Speaker 1: already hinted at, seems like it fell through the cracks,
- 5:13Speaker 1: to say the least when it comes to critics and viewers.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Both was released October twentieth, twenty twenty five seven million
- 5:21Speaker 1: dollar budget and made six hundred and seventy two foul.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Well that's it led slightly less than ten percent return.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's tough. Directed by a guy named Jan Komasa,
- 5:33Speaker 1: who previously was nominated for an Academy Award for Best
- 5:37Speaker 1: International Feature Film, ironically enough for a film called Corpus
- 5:41Speaker 1: Christy financed and distributed by Lionsgate, but it has been
- 5:46Speaker 1: suggested that lions Gate buried this film because of its
- 5:51Speaker 1: subject matter.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Well, good news is you got distribution. Bad news is
- 5:55Speaker 2: it's by a company that hates everything you stand forward
- 5:57Speaker 2: bought your product only out of spy to squash it.
- 6:02Speaker 1: The claim here is that this movie was made in
- 6:06Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, when everyone thought Biden was gonna win,
- 6:10Speaker 1: which I don't know who everyone is in that scenario.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I was pretty off board with Biden winning by twenty
- 6:17Speaker 1: twenty three myself. But one of the claims here is
- 6:21Speaker 1: that when they were making this movie, they assumed Biden
- 6:23Speaker 1: was gonna win in twenty twenty four, and then this
- 6:26Speaker 1: would just come out as some sort of Oh, this
- 6:30Speaker 1: is the nightmare that could have been, and instead Trump won,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and they're like, shit, if we put this movie out,
- 6:36Speaker 1: Trump's gonna sue us or something.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, not to get too ahead of ourselves, but this
- 6:40Speaker 2: movie is almost lose his believability because the fascism has
- 6:44Speaker 2: an elegance to it. It starts with a book. Trump
- 6:47Speaker 2: is to start with the book. I wrote a book
- 6:51Speaker 2: that everybody read and thought about and it changed their minds.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah, the tipping point for this country is going to
- 6:57Speaker 1: be a meme with a really buffed Trump. There'll be
- 7:00Speaker 1: a fucking eagle on it.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So it'll be called the Gay Andy and it'll be
- 7:05Speaker 2: so I'm just gonna kill you, Yeah, Gay Andy.
- 7:10Speaker 1: This movie covers five years in the life of a
- 7:15Speaker 1: family that is torn apart under the weight of a
- 7:19Speaker 1: burgeoning fascist regime in the United States. You mentioned a
- 7:24Speaker 1: TV show before we started recording that is very similar
- 7:28Speaker 1: to this Years and Years, Yeah, which if people haven't
- 7:32Speaker 1: seen that, it is an HBO limited series, really really
- 7:37Speaker 1: good and very similar premise, very very similar. You're just
- 7:43Speaker 1: kind of seeing a family unravel under the weight of
- 7:46Speaker 1: a fascist regime. I think that series is maybe a
- 7:50Speaker 1: little better than this movie. But I think just because
- 7:53Speaker 1: this is the kind of story that I think needs
- 7:56Speaker 1: a little more room to breathe and develop than you
- 7:59Speaker 1: can get in the span of this is only like
- 8:02Speaker 1: an hour forty something like that. Tastefully brief as far
- 8:06Speaker 1: as movies go these days.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it didn't really drag at any point. Yeah, Years
- 8:12Speaker 2: and Years. I liked just because when it comes to
- 8:13Speaker 2: stuff like the decline of humanity, I like the lore.
- 8:17Speaker 2: You know. Yeah, they're like, Okay, they got the drones
- 8:19Speaker 2: flying around with the little flashlights. That's part of their lore,
- 8:22Speaker 2: the past curfew drones. I could have done with some
- 8:24Speaker 2: more of that stuff, but they got a lot of
- 8:27Speaker 2: good world building and in the time that they had.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I would have liked to know more about the
- 8:31Speaker 1: government in this was the girl running it? I don't
- 8:35Speaker 1: think she was. I mean, she wrote the books.
- 8:37Speaker 2: She's basically like the what the fuck is that guy's
- 8:40Speaker 2: name is to Curtis Yelchin or something, the guy that
- 8:43Speaker 2: the Dark Enlightenment Mint guy, Curtis Jarvin. Oh yeah, yeah, Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 2: she's like the Curtis Jarvin of this centrist fascism thing
- 8:52Speaker 2: stars in the middle of the Flag movement. The Change.
- 8:56Speaker 1: The change is what this idea she's pushing is. And
- 9:01Speaker 1: they don't go into a lot of detail, but it
- 9:04Speaker 1: seems like she's mostly pushing for, Hey, this two party system,
- 9:09Speaker 1: it's not working out. We should have just a one
- 9:11Speaker 1: party system instead. Then there's nothing to fight about. And
- 9:15Speaker 1: somehow most of the country is like, yeah, I read
- 9:18Speaker 1: this book.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it sounds insane to me, just and no of them.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I'm saying it out loud. I'm like, how did I
- 9:24Speaker 2: buy this movie? For a second, there's a popular book.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it would have to become a documentary at some point.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that gad turned into a series of analytical YouTube videos.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, The Secret started as a book, but that
- 9:39Speaker 1: eventually they turned that into a movie. So yeah, I
- 9:43Speaker 1: could see The Change being the same thing. Here's the thing.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It's also the kind of thing people would lie about
- 9:49Speaker 1: having read it.
- 9:50Speaker 2: They would get the gist of it and be like, yeah, yeah, abundance, gotcha.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Yeah, centrist that's me. I'm yeah, kill all the radicals
- 9:57Speaker 1: on both sides, let's come together.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: A lot of people would just fucking fall for it.
- 10:02Speaker 1: The suggestion, though, is that this movie was buried on
- 10:07Speaker 1: account of the studio being uncomfortable releasing it during the
- 10:12Speaker 1: second reign of Trump. This is a quote from Frank Woollager,
- 10:17Speaker 1: a partner at GERSH who represents director Jan Coomasa. The
- 10:22Speaker 1: film was buried because it's incendiary. To me, it's a
- 10:26Speaker 1: sign of the world we live in. End quote. And
- 10:29Speaker 1: this is producer Nick Wexler. I've never had a movie
- 10:32Speaker 1: that we thought was really interesting that no one was
- 10:34Speaker 1: aware of. It's hard to market a political film today.
- 10:38Speaker 1: People are afraid of them. They don't know how it
- 10:40Speaker 1: will be received emotionally. It's a weird time.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it is one of these things. Who's like, well,
- 10:46Speaker 2: I need an escape. How about politics?
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Back in the nineties, politics was so you could just
- 10:51Speaker 2: ignore Bill Clinton, a new Gingrich so you can then
- 10:53Speaker 2: go watch The West Wing because you had space emotionally
- 10:56Speaker 2: for political content.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I would agree with what he's said saying, But also,
- 11:01Speaker 1: what about One Battle after Another, which is a decidedly
- 11:06Speaker 1: political movie that people are calling the best film of
- 11:11Speaker 1: the year. It's damn near three hours long. Seems like
- 11:14Speaker 1: they did in okay job marketing and selling that.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Doesn't that one have Loo DiCaprio in it. It's sure
- 11:21Speaker 2: a shit does well. That helps your movie a little bit.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and Benicio del Toro in the booth, also.
- 11:29Speaker 2: In the booth, Yeah, so so that means he's spitting
- 11:32Speaker 2: so in that he's that means he's acting.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. That movie makes me kind of question that
- 11:38Speaker 1: argument that it's hard to sell a political movie. And also,
- 11:42Speaker 1: I mean, Diane Lane isn't nobody. She's no Leonardo DiCaprio,
- 11:47Speaker 1: I guess, but this is her first movie since before COVID.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I like to imagine a family guy code away, Diane
- 11:55Speaker 2: Lane hearing that going, you're you know, Leonardo DiCaprio, honey,
- 11:59Speaker 2: and she's like, I.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Know, yeah, this movie. It wasn't reviewed by the New
- 12:04Speaker 1: York Times, the LA Times, the Washington.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Post, any of the gay andy papers.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, none of the outlets that are cowtowing to the fascists.
- 12:14Speaker 1: These days bothered reviewing this film. Only two cast members,
- 12:18Speaker 1: aside from Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler, attended the premiere,
- 12:23Speaker 1: with the claim being that most were persuaded to distance
- 12:27Speaker 1: themselves from the project by their respective agents and publicists.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Wow, you gotta love show business. We're concerned that you
- 12:35Speaker 2: might be perceived as principled.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yeah. I do remember on more than one occasion when
- 12:41Speaker 1: Trump was running for office the first time. There's a
- 12:44Speaker 1: few different comedians I had booked on the Unpopular Opinion podcast,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and when I sent them the topic and they found
- 12:53Speaker 1: out we were talking about Trump, they were like, sorry,
- 12:55Speaker 1: my manager says, I can't talk about politics. How's that decision,
- 12:59Speaker 1: agent in your fucking craw now? Probably fine?
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah, probably great, to be honest with you, Yeah, I
- 13:07Speaker 2: was out here buying products and consuming them with my
- 13:10Speaker 2: friends and family.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So this movie again was initially filmed in twenty twenty three,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and one of the articles we'll link to about it
- 13:18Speaker 1: says they thought Biden was gonna win when they filmed it,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and then when he didn't, they pushed the release back,
- 13:26Speaker 1: to which I say, you fucking cowards, Why honestly, what
- 13:30Speaker 1: was Trump gonna do about this movie.
- 13:33Speaker 2: This really symbolic, kind of subtle movie.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that Civil War movie did fine at the box office.
- 13:40Speaker 1: No one got sued. I mean the fucking fascist president
- 13:44Speaker 1: spoiler gets shot in the face in that. No one
- 13:47Speaker 1: called it a leftist incitement to violence. They should have
- 13:51Speaker 1: just fucking put this movie out. I mean they did,
- 13:53Speaker 1: but they did it very stealth.
- 13:56Speaker 2: They weren't standing nine toes down behind it, absolute lutely not.
- 14:01Speaker 2: This was five made six toes at most.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I don't remember which of the three articles we linked to,
- 14:07Speaker 1: but they talk about the movie's release in LA and
- 14:10Speaker 1: it was only at like two different AMC theaters and
- 14:15Speaker 1: only as the matinee thing super super limited release. Oh wow,
- 14:21Speaker 1: which I don't know, seems weird.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Bit, it definitely seems like you tried to bury it
- 14:25Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And then they were going to release it in
- 14:29Speaker 1: time for the election, but then the shooting of Charlie
- 14:31Speaker 1: Kirk happened, and for some reason they decided that was
- 14:36Speaker 1: grounds to push the movie back. This is another quote
- 14:39Speaker 1: from Frank Wollager. Do I want this film to be
- 14:42Speaker 1: on Trump's radar and have him attack this film from
- 14:44Speaker 1: the podium? I have sympathy for Lionsgate. Here they buried it.
- 14:49Speaker 1: They could have buried it worse, but they made the
- 14:51Speaker 1: movie and that's impressive.
- 14:53Speaker 2: End quote.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't think I'm that impressed.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of like, you know when Asketon needs
- 15:00Speaker 2: to fucking comply with the missions regulation, so they convert
- 15:05Speaker 2: a smart car into an Aston Martin and call it
- 15:07Speaker 2: an Aston Martin just because they need a little three
- 15:10Speaker 2: cylinder car with forty horse powers so they can comply
- 15:13Speaker 2: with this. It's like, yeah, look at this one cool
- 15:16Speaker 2: thing we made. Yeah, we made cool stuff. We didn't
- 15:19Speaker 2: pay attention to it or nurture it or try to
- 15:22Speaker 2: promote it at all, but we've made it. We threw
- 15:24Speaker 2: some money at it so we could say we did it.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, the kind of movie that maybe could have changed
- 15:29Speaker 1: a couple minds going into the election. This would have
- 15:32Speaker 1: been great if this got more wide scale publicity or
- 15:35Speaker 1: any publicity at all. Trailers showed before other Lionsgate movies,
- 15:41Speaker 1: but that was about all the publicity it got. So
- 15:45Speaker 1: that's the controversy behind the movie. That's the back story.
- 15:49Speaker 1: We should talk about the movie itself because you can
- 15:51Speaker 1: watch it now. It's available to rent. At the moment,
- 15:55Speaker 1: I think it's like four ninety nine, five ninety nine,
- 15:58Speaker 1: But it's also going to be on Hulu soon, so
- 16:01Speaker 1: you can just hold out for that if you want.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I like the movie. It's not probably what you're expecting
- 16:07Speaker 1: from a dystopian film about a future fascist government. There's
- 16:12Speaker 1: not a lot of violence.
- 16:15Speaker 2: There's a lot of modern farmhouse interiors.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Movie that's about a dystopian government.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Future.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of family functions. It's called Anniversary.
- 16:25Speaker 1: It starts and ends at an anniversary party, the twenty
- 16:31Speaker 1: fifth and thirtieth anniversary of the two main characters, Diane
- 16:36Speaker 1: Lane and Kyle Chandler's characters. Diane Lane plays a Georgetown
- 16:43Speaker 1: professor who had to run in with a student in
- 16:47Speaker 1: the past because that student wrote a paper called The
- 16:53Speaker 1: Change Birth of a Nation, which fucking gulp, don't put
- 16:58Speaker 1: Birth of a Nation in the title of your shit,
- 17:00Speaker 1: I was supposed to, said, you google that. Yeah, there's
- 17:03Speaker 1: a bad connotation to have.
- 17:06Speaker 2: The new book My Struggle by Connery Speed and uh oh.
- 17:10Speaker 1: One day, this student that Diane Lane had this confrontation
- 17:16Speaker 1: with turns up dating Diane Lane's son. They are both
- 17:20Speaker 1: writers and they were introduced through their agent. They have
- 17:24Speaker 1: the same agent. And we start the movie at this
- 17:29Speaker 1: anniversary party and the girl who wrote the Change the
- 17:34Speaker 1: Nazi in Training. Her name's Liz. She's standing in the
- 17:38Speaker 1: mirror trying to be normal. She's practicing saying hi to people,
- 17:44Speaker 1: which is weird. It would be alarming if you just
- 17:48Speaker 1: saw it happening, because you should be able to say hi.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't seem like the kind of thing you
- 17:52Speaker 2: don't need to overthink this much.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and everything I just said about their past relationship,
- 17:59Speaker 1: they don't tell you that right away. It kind of
- 18:01Speaker 1: builds up to that. We meet the rest of the family.
- 18:05Speaker 1: There's a sister who is a stand up comedian who's
- 18:08Speaker 1: getting kind of famous.
- 18:09Speaker 2: By the way. Let's so you know, this is a
- 18:11Speaker 2: pretty good movie. Is because it has a depiction of
- 18:13Speaker 2: a stand up comedian in it. And I still approve
- 18:15Speaker 2: of the movie. Yeah, tough to do. It was definitely
- 18:19Speaker 2: the worst part of the movie that parts that had
- 18:21Speaker 2: fixed in up in it, but was done tastefully enough
- 18:24Speaker 2: that I accepted. Well.
- 18:25Speaker 1: It is pretty relevant also because if you look into
- 18:30Speaker 1: all the things that are happening in India with fascism
- 18:34Speaker 1: right now. That is super common stand up comedians. If
- 18:38Speaker 1: they say anything about the government, motherfuckers will take to
- 18:43Speaker 1: the stage and beat the shit out of them, or
- 18:45Speaker 1: they will send a bulldozer knock their fucking house down.
- 18:49Speaker 1: It's bad times. It's worse than it is here right now.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Like you can still get on stage and joke about
- 18:56Speaker 1: Trump and maybe someone in the audience is going to
- 18:59Speaker 1: get a little cranky. But it's not like India, and
- 19:03Speaker 1: it's not like what you see in this movie yet,
- 19:06Speaker 1: but it's getting there. So Liz at this family function
- 19:10Speaker 1: is a very divisive presence because everyone knows she's a
- 19:14Speaker 1: fucking fascist who wrote this paper. She was ostracized from
- 19:19Speaker 1: Georgetown after she wrote it because of liberal mind virus.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And as everyone is leaving this party, Liz walks up
- 19:26Speaker 1: to Ellen that is Diane Lane's character's name, and hugs
- 19:30Speaker 1: her and says, you know, I used to be afraid
- 19:32Speaker 1: of you, but I don't think I am anymore. And
- 19:35Speaker 1: then that's just how that scene ends. It's got sort
- 19:39Speaker 1: of almost kind of horror movie vibes at first, because
- 19:42Speaker 1: you don't really know what Liz is up to.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and she's very unassuming. She doesn't necessarily strike you
- 19:49Speaker 2: as the creator of the new hot breed of fascism.
- 19:53Speaker 2: She's pretty mild mannered.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Yeah, she doesn't seem threatening at all, almost to the
- 19:58Speaker 1: point that maybe she was just misunderstood by the libs.
- 20:03Speaker 1: But by the end it's clear that's not the case.
- 20:06Speaker 1: This movie is good, but there are some moments, like
- 20:10Speaker 1: in any movie, where I don't know it's got its
- 20:14Speaker 1: eye roll moments, like when Ellen gets the book copy
- 20:20Speaker 1: of The Change just in the mail and is completely
- 20:24Speaker 1: caught off guard that this thing exists. It's like, you
- 20:27Speaker 1: would have known that book was coming out, that is
- 20:30Speaker 1: your son's girlfriend. You'd have all this fucking conflict. There
- 20:35Speaker 1: would have been some promo behind it. And she's just
- 20:39Speaker 1: blown away that this book has arrived at her home.
- 20:42Speaker 1: It's like you knew, you would have known. But it's
- 20:45Speaker 1: a minor sticking point, I guess. But that happens. The
- 20:49Speaker 1: Change becomes a book, and that's when we meet the
- 20:52Speaker 1: Cumberland Company. I like that part. There's this mysterious organization
- 20:58Speaker 1: that is behind all of this. They get behind The
- 21:02Speaker 1: Change and Liz's book.
- 21:04Speaker 2: This is not to be confused, by the way with
- 21:05Speaker 2: the cumber Bunt Company, which is sort of a seasonal
- 21:09Speaker 2: business around prom time. It's sort of the H and
- 21:12Speaker 2: R block of the prom They really only operate during
- 21:16Speaker 2: it's kind of a prom centric period.
- 21:18Speaker 1: But anyway, but still also very right wing connected.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Yes, and tied to the Heritage Foundation.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, very nefarious outfit. They just also will spice
- 21:28Speaker 1: up your outfit with a nice cumber bunt. The Cumberland Company,
- 21:32Speaker 1: you don't learn much about them either in this See
- 21:37Speaker 1: that's kind of what I was missing from this is
- 21:42Speaker 1: all of the fascism, the government, whatever the Cumberland Company
- 21:46Speaker 1: is doing. It all is happening in the background and
- 21:49Speaker 1: you don't really see it. It reminds me of The Purge,
- 21:54Speaker 1: the first Purge movie, the original og Purge movie, where
- 21:58Speaker 1: it promises you one thing, which is unbridled chaos in
- 22:03Speaker 1: the streets. Everything's legal, murder, whatever you want, all this carnage,
- 22:09Speaker 1: it's all happening. Now. Let's put a camera inside Ethan
- 22:12Speaker 1: Hawke's home and just watch what happens there. It's like, no,
- 22:16Speaker 1: get me out in the streets. I want to see
- 22:18Speaker 1: the fucking violence happening out there. This kind of hit
- 22:22Speaker 1: me in the same way where it's like, show me
- 22:25Speaker 1: the government.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I want to see Diane Lane and Alligator Alcatraz.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Yeah, we almost get there.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yea.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess we're just supposed to assume that this
- 22:35Speaker 1: move toward the center, that's not going to leave room
- 22:38Speaker 1: for any rabble rousers on either side. So I guess
- 22:42Speaker 1: they just killed everyone. But yeah, this could have used
- 22:45Speaker 1: some world building. It could have used I mean, it
- 22:48Speaker 1: could have stood to be a little longer, I think.
- 22:50Speaker 1: But it also kind of reminds me of that horror
- 22:53Speaker 1: movie Good Boy, where you just see it from the
- 22:56Speaker 1: dog's perspective. This is you're just seeing the fascism from
- 23:00Speaker 1: the perspective of this family, Yeah, who are very connected
- 23:04Speaker 1: to it, but also kind of disconnected from it because
- 23:08Speaker 1: they're not fascists. They don't support this. Their son just
- 23:13Speaker 1: happens to now be married eventually to the woman who
- 23:18Speaker 1: invented the idea.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I liked his character art that he was a failed
- 23:21Speaker 2: sign and it totally went to his head.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he by the end is probably the most unlikable
- 23:28Speaker 1: person in the room. I have several times in the
- 23:32Speaker 1: notes that I was just really really hoping that guy
- 23:36Speaker 1: would get shot in the face. He's just a movie character.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I can say that with no fear of repercussion. I
- 23:45Speaker 1: wish this guy would have got shot in the goddamn face.
- 23:48Speaker 2: When the clown shows up, I thought he was getting shot.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yeap. Did you know who the clown was?
- 23:52Speaker 2: When I knew the clown was immediately.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was. I knew who the clown was,
- 23:57Speaker 1: and I was like, she's gonna shoot that motherfucker in
- 23:59Speaker 1: the face. But we'll get there. So that's the early part.
- 24:03Speaker 1: We find out that this paper has been made into
- 24:06Speaker 1: a book. It becomes this big cultural phenomenon, and now
- 24:10Speaker 1: there's another holiday gathering. Liz is pregnant this time. Josh
- 24:15Speaker 1: announces that Liz is going to be a guest lecturer
- 24:18Speaker 1: at Georgetown, and Liz asks Ellen to do the introduction
- 24:23Speaker 1: That turns into a whole debacle. It was a bold move.
- 24:26Speaker 2: This is like a very frenemy move. Yeah, let's give
- 24:29Speaker 2: you this honor. I know you'd hate. Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 1: There's a lot of passive aggressiveness in this movie. And
- 24:36Speaker 1: before everyone leaves, Liz creeps into the youngest Darter's room
- 24:41Speaker 1: and tries to buddy up to her, which sets up
- 24:45Speaker 1: a great moment later where Ellen is talking to Liz
- 24:49Speaker 1: and she goes, if you try to groom another one
- 24:51Speaker 1: of my kids, I will kill you. Fun scene.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's the power of motherhood.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Yeah. One of the things that you see in this
- 25:00Speaker 1: is Ellen sort of losing her shit as time goes
- 25:05Speaker 1: on because Liz, the student that she had all this
- 25:09Speaker 1: conflict with, is winning and her ideas are winning. She
- 25:14Speaker 1: has infiltrated her family and taken her son away. She's
- 25:18Speaker 1: trying to go after her other kids, and you see
- 25:22Speaker 1: Ellen just breaking down over time. There's a viral video
- 25:27Speaker 1: of her tearing up a neighbor's flag because the flag
- 25:30Speaker 1: changes under this regime that it's still red, white and
- 25:34Speaker 1: blue with the stars, but the blue and the stars
- 25:39Speaker 1: are in the middle of the flag now instead on
- 25:43Speaker 1: the left. Get it spooky one side, there's only one
- 25:48Speaker 1: the center.
- 25:48Speaker 2: That'd be one of the toughest things to come back from,
- 25:51Speaker 2: just in terms of your self esteem. It's like having
- 25:54Speaker 2: like your sort of frustrated Karen moment go viral.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that happens, and you can't really tell the flag
- 26:01Speaker 1: is different in that scene. It's not till later on
- 26:04Speaker 1: there's a scene with the daughter and her boyfriend, and
- 26:07Speaker 1: then you see that flag again, because at first it
- 26:09Speaker 1: looks like she's just fucking up an American flag.
- 26:12Speaker 2: And you're like, all right, sister, yeah, yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Facts, lady, right. And so then they cut to one
- 26:19Speaker 1: year later, and this is when Comedy Daughter is on stage.
- 26:23Speaker 1: She's got the flag on her shirt but it's crossed out,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and she's talking shit about the government and people just
- 26:30Speaker 1: come on stage and beat the shit on her. She
- 26:33Speaker 1: ends up in the hospital and then disappears when she
- 26:37Speaker 1: is discharged from the hospital. I assumed she was dead
- 26:41Speaker 1: at first.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I thought she was dead too. Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I thought that was what they were getting at, was
- 26:46Speaker 1: that she had been.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Killed, had been disappeared. Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 1: So by this point the country is just a fascist
- 26:53Speaker 1: hell escape. Youngest sister is looking for Comedy Sister on
- 26:57Speaker 1: the dark web again implication, and she's been disappeared. Ellen
- 27:02Speaker 1: is on some sort of watch list now and can't work.
- 27:05Speaker 1: But we got another family gathering. It's dad's birthday. Josh
- 27:08Speaker 1: and Liz show up. Shit is tense on account of
- 27:12Speaker 1: Comedy Daughter getting black bagged, and this is where we
- 27:17Speaker 1: sort of find out that Comedy Daughter might not be dead.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Maybe Dad knows where she is. Maybe she's just hiding out,
- 27:25Speaker 1: and it's just sort of hinted at because fascist dick
- 27:29Speaker 1: head son tries to get Dad to bring him on
- 27:32Speaker 1: as a silent investor in his struggling restaurant, and Dad's like,
- 27:37Speaker 1: what you think, I'm just going to give up Anna,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and the kid's like, you know where she is? So
- 27:41Speaker 1: up to that point, I thought she was dead. But
- 27:43Speaker 1: they inject a little drama there and make it clear
- 27:46Speaker 1: that maybe she's not like that.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I also liked that they seem to have kept it
- 27:51Speaker 2: from the mom just because they didn't trust her to
- 27:53Speaker 2: not shut up about it.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that seemed like the right call. Mom was wigging
- 27:57Speaker 1: out by this point.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I mean to bring up the flag video, but you
- 28:01Speaker 2: know it's relevant.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not a good look. I have neighbors who
- 28:07Speaker 1: flew Trump flags the day before the election. I wasn't psyched,
- 28:11Speaker 1: But then tear the shit down, yes on it or
- 28:15Speaker 1: anything they got doorbell cameras.
- 28:17Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I like this, but it was another thing I wish
- 28:21Speaker 1: they could have built on a little more or expanded on.
- 28:25Speaker 1: When Josh and Liz the fascists show up for Dad's birthday,
- 28:29Speaker 1: they have this creepy ass nanny with them who is
- 28:32Speaker 1: teaching the kids German. She seems very stern, almost military like,
- 28:37Speaker 1: kind of scary. But then at one point she pulls
- 28:41Speaker 1: Ellen the mom aside and shows her a video of
- 28:45Speaker 1: comedy daughter who is alive. So the fascists have an
- 28:48Speaker 1: infiltrator in their midst and they never tell us anything
- 28:52Speaker 1: else about that. This woman is clearly working for the
- 28:56Speaker 1: resistance or something, and that's all we get is that
- 29:00Speaker 1: moment where she shows Ellen the video that proves her
- 29:03Speaker 1: daughters alive, and then she's like thumbs up and fucking
- 29:06Speaker 1: runs back off.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I wonder if there's more the cold edit
- 29:08Speaker 2: it out, or if that was all they ever intended
- 29:10Speaker 2: to show. It does seem like kind of a weird
- 29:13Speaker 2: nugget to drop to not pay off.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Yeah, this could have been longer. I don't say that
- 29:18Speaker 1: that often about movies, but I think this should have
- 29:22Speaker 1: been a little bit longer. I think one of the
- 29:24Speaker 1: probably creepiest scenes is when the census takers show up. Yeah,
- 29:31Speaker 1: those two ladies sure are a problem because there's a
- 29:35Speaker 1: new census that is being conducted in the United States
- 29:39Speaker 1: in this version of the future, and you basically have
- 29:42Speaker 1: to sign a thing saying you support the change and
- 29:47Speaker 1: you are a change household and if you don't, bad
- 29:51Speaker 1: things could happen to you. And these two census takers
- 29:56Speaker 1: show up. They're girls, they're young, probably early thirties at best,
- 30:02Speaker 1: and they're being really pleasant in a really threatening kind
- 30:07Speaker 1: of way. It's like you would have to watch the scene.
- 30:11Speaker 2: It kind of reminded me of the beginning of Glorious
- 30:13Speaker 2: Bastards when he's talking to that guy when Londa is
- 30:16Speaker 2: just interrogating him. Foe pleasantly.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot like that. It's unsettling. They show
- 30:23Speaker 1: them pictures of their youngest daughter at a protest and
- 30:27Speaker 1: threaten to charge her with terrorism basically and to send
- 30:31Speaker 1: her to prison. So Ellen ends up signing it. She
- 30:35Speaker 1: just grabs it and signs it, which at that point,
- 30:38Speaker 1: what else can you do? I mean, it turns out
- 30:40Speaker 1: to be too little, too late, but what can you do?
- 30:43Speaker 2: Yeah, if they got you on the ground with rocks
- 30:46Speaker 2: and pitchforks, is your God really going to be mad
- 30:49Speaker 2: at you if you denounce your religion?
- 30:51Speaker 1: And so then we get to the anniversary party that
- 30:55Speaker 1: ends the film. This covers again five years in this
- 30:59Speaker 1: family's life and Liz and Josh the fascists show up
- 31:04Speaker 1: once again, but this time Liz she immediately kind of
- 31:08Speaker 1: corners Ellen and now she's scared of Josh, the no
- 31:14Speaker 1: good nick son who just married into all this shit.
- 31:18Speaker 1: She goes to Ellen and she's like, listen, as a mom,
- 31:21Speaker 1: I need you to help me. This son of yours
- 31:24Speaker 1: is out of control. And Ellen does the right thing
- 31:27Speaker 1: and just slaps the shit out of her, just smacks
- 31:32Speaker 1: her right in the goddamn face and is like, beat it,
- 31:35Speaker 1: lady Hitler, I like that part. Josh gives a highly
- 31:41Speaker 1: creepy and fascist speech at this anniversary party, forces the
- 31:45Speaker 1: parents to dance to a Tears for Fears song.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah, which is apparently their song. Yeah.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Dad had danced to it at the anniversary party five
- 31:54Speaker 1: years earlier, and no one's in a dancing mood. But
- 31:59Speaker 1: by this point point, this kid is so powerful and
- 32:03Speaker 1: so fucking drunk off that power that kind of just
- 32:07Speaker 1: got to do what he says, or he'll send the
- 32:10Speaker 1: the Gestapo after you. And then that's when the surprise
- 32:13Speaker 1: clown shows up, just out of nowhere from the backyard.
- 32:20Speaker 1: This clown just emerges and everyone's like, what the fun
- 32:24Speaker 1: I mean, I guess it's a party. Someone hired a clown.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Do you hear his little line He goes, I don't
- 32:29Speaker 2: know what this is, but I bet I'm paying for it. Yeah.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Yeah, And immediately I was like, that's comedy daughter and
- 32:36Speaker 1: she's gonna shoot Josh in the fucking face. Fifty percent right,
- 32:40Speaker 1: it was comedy daughter, but she was not there to
- 32:42Speaker 1: shoot Josh in the face, unfortunately. But she does make
- 32:46Speaker 1: her return. But also Bertie, the youngest daughter, has escaped.
- 32:51Speaker 1: No one knows where she is. She's left the house,
- 32:53Speaker 1: and she has left the house because she was going
- 32:57Speaker 1: to stage and attack on the Cumberland come. Seems like
- 33:00Speaker 1: she lets off a dirty bomb or something. She gets
- 33:04Speaker 1: it all on on very crisp video. It's great, there's
- 33:08Speaker 1: surveillance video. Yeah, she just blows herself up in the
- 33:11Speaker 1: lobby of the building and it's like, okay, it's the lobby.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I bet all the work stuff is on a different floor.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's probably still fine.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Just fucked up the reception area, but receptionist next week.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they can just route people in through a
- 33:25Speaker 1: different door probably, But cool, I mean cool.
- 33:28Speaker 2: It was neat to look more than I've ever to
- 33:30Speaker 2: fight the power.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah. And so after that, after they realized
- 33:35Speaker 1: the youngest daughter's dead, Anna comes out, thankfully not still
- 33:39Speaker 1: dressed as a clown. She got out of that makeup
- 33:41Speaker 1: really fucking fast. She comes out and Josh immediately calls
- 33:46Speaker 1: the state in rats on her. It's like, my sister's here,
- 33:50Speaker 1: come get her. And that is when one of the
- 33:54Speaker 1: most useless characters in this entire film, who we have
- 33:57Speaker 1: not talked about at all, which is depressed daughter I
- 34:01Speaker 1: guess you would call her.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:03Speaker 1: She has a boyfriend, husband, husband, I think, and their
- 34:08Speaker 1: whole plot line is she's pregnant. He thinks she's pregnant.
- 34:14Speaker 1: She actually got an abortion. And the whole time, I'm like,
- 34:18Speaker 1: but you can't tell us about the government. Yeah, but
- 34:21Speaker 1: you have time to fill us in on all of this.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Have you ever seen the movie Den of Thieves.
- 34:26Speaker 2: I just watched this movie. I totally forget that was
- 34:29Speaker 2: even happened. That abortion scene. It was so irrelevant everything's
- 34:33Speaker 2: going on. No, I've never seen Den of Thieves.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Den of Thieves is a perfect action movie, except for
- 34:40Speaker 1: the like fifteen or twenty minutes they spend on Gerard
- 34:44Speaker 1: Butler's broken marriage. I don't care about any of that.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Get me back to that fucking shootout on the LA Freeway.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Every minute of that movie absolutely fucking rips, except the
- 34:56Speaker 1: family drama and this movie, whenever the pregnancy stuff comes up,
- 35:01Speaker 1: it's like, God, damn, there's so much I don't know
- 35:03Speaker 1: about this world that you are all living in. I
- 35:07Speaker 1: don't know anything about this government. I don't even know
- 35:09Speaker 1: what the government's called. Is the party just called the Change?
- 35:13Speaker 2: Are we still the United States of America?
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah? Can I get any details? But we get this
- 35:18Speaker 1: lady's fucking pregnancy drama, and her only redeeming moment comes
- 35:24Speaker 1: after Josh calls and rats on comedy Sister. That's when
- 35:30Speaker 1: depressed abortion sister walks in and just stabs Josh in
- 35:35Speaker 1: the stomach. Nice, which is satisfying, but I was also like,
- 35:39Speaker 1: that doesn't look fatal.
- 35:40Speaker 2: It looks flesh woundy.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but it turns out you want him to survive
- 35:45Speaker 1: because the well first, depressed sister goes out and commits
- 35:49Speaker 1: suicide by fascist. The state pulls up with their goons.
- 35:53Speaker 1: She's got the knife she just stabbed Josh with. They're like,
- 35:56Speaker 1: put it down, and she like twitches her arm a little,
- 35:58Speaker 1: and they shoot her like one hundred eight times. Very realistic,
- 36:01Speaker 1: very literally suppose they're very realistic seeds. Yea, yeah, absolutely,
- 36:06Speaker 1: as it would happen in real life. And then because
- 36:09Speaker 1: Josh has called and rated on Anna, they show up
- 36:14Speaker 1: and just round up the entire family. Actually, Anna gets
- 36:17Speaker 1: away and just jumps into the ocean. I don't know
- 36:19Speaker 1: if she lived or drowned or if she's a fucking mermaid.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Now maybe she lives in the ocean now, I don't know,
- 36:27Speaker 1: but she sort of gets away. But Diane Lane and
- 36:30Speaker 1: Kyle Chandler end up by the end of the movie
- 36:33Speaker 1: on their knees white bagged in this version of America.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Not black bag.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Yeah, not black bagged. I bet you can sort of
- 36:40Speaker 1: see through those white bags, which would just make it worse. Yeah,
- 36:44Speaker 1: I would rather be black bagged. There's a blurry out
- 36:46Speaker 1: line of everything I once loved. Yeah, yeah, Yeah. It's
- 36:50Speaker 1: a pretty rough ending. It's an emotional moment because they
- 36:54Speaker 1: know it's about to go down. Diane Lane is literally goes,
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm scared, and.
- 36:59Speaker 2: To get white your anniversary too.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and to have it happen because your piece of
- 37:05Speaker 1: shit son called and ratted on your.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Other child, dropped the dime on you.
- 37:11Speaker 1: But then that motherfucker he gets his because he was thinking,
- 37:17Speaker 1: you know, much like Trump voters who were like, Oh,
