- 0:26show notes. Tesla Inc has witnessed a sharp
- 0:29decline in market value, losing over $94 billion in the early
- 0:34weeks of 2024. Now this downturn marks a stark
- 0:37contrast to the company's success in 2023, where its stock
- 0:41value more than doubled. Now the slump is attributed to a
- 0:44series of adverse developments, including reduced demand for E
- 0:48VS in the United States, price cuts in China, and increasing
- 0:52labor costs. Now the electric vehicle
- 0:55industry is currently experiencing A slowdown
- 0:57altogether, particularly in the US market.
- 1:00Investors main concern on Tesla is stagnating growth, said
- 1:04Jeffrey Osborne, an analyst from Cohen, highlighting concerns
- 1:07about Tesla's performance, especially in light of the price
- 1:10reductions in the competitive Chinese market.
- 1:13Now, these factors have fueled investor apprehension,
- 1:15contributing to the company's recent financial setbacks.
- 1:19Tesla's recent market capitalization loss is
- 1:22unprecedented since its public debut in 2010.
- 1:26The company's stock has plunged by 12% since January 2024, the
- 1:30most significant drop since a 14% decline over the first nine
- 1:34trading days of 2016. The outlook for a rapid recovery
- 1:38seems bleak given the current market conditions, and the
- 1:41company has been aggressively cutting prices since early of
- 1:442023 to stimulate demand. But this strategy has led to a
- 1:47substantial erosion of profit margins.
- 1:50The third quarter of the previous year saw Tesla's
- 1:53automotive gross margin excluded regulatory credits fall to 16.3%
- 1:58from 27.9% a year earlier. And additionally, Tesla is
- 2:03facing increased financial pressure due to pay raises for
- 2:06production workers at its US plants.
- 2:09We are going through a cyclical downturn for E VS, but
- 2:13competitive dynamics are exacerbating the cyclical
- 2:15pressures, said Ivana de Leskva, senior chief investment officer
- 2:21at Spear Invest. She noted that the combination
- 2:24of price cuts and shrinking margins are consequences of
- 2:27these challenging market conditions.
- 2:29Now adding to Tesla's challenges.
- 2:31The company has had to redirect shipments intended for its
- 2:34Berlin plant and suspend most production there from January
- 2:3729th to February 11th due to security concerns and Western
- 2:42military actions in the Red Sea. This disruption further
- 2:45complicates the company's operational landscape.
- 2:48Tesla first raised alarms about slow EV demand during its third
- 2:53quarter earnings report in October.
- 2:55Following this, several automakers and suppliers
- 2:57worldwide expressed similar concerns, leading to a scaling
- 3:00back of expansion plans across the industry in recent
- 3:04development. Tesla's fourth quarter delivery
- 3:07numbers, though better than expected, positioned the company
- 3:09behind China's BYD company in global electric car sales.
- 3:14This shift has been a wake up call for investors, particularly
- 3:17after Tesla's stock was among the top performance in the S&P
- 3:21500 last year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the world's
- 3:25richest person as of last year, has seen a significant decrease
- 3:28in his net worth by $23 billion in the early part of 2024.
- 3:34His wealth, primarily derived from his stakes and Tesla and
- 3:36SpaceX, has been affected by the recent downturn in Tesla's
- 3:40market value. And despite these setbacks,
- 3:42Tesla remains A crucial player in the global shift towards
- 3:45electric vehicles. While China's BYD has surpassed
- 3:48Tesla unit sales, Tesla still leads in revenue and profits,
- 3:51particularly in the US market. However, Tesla's past success
- 3:55and inflated market capitalization have made its
- 3:58stock particularly sensitive to negative news.
- 4:02A major point of contention of Tesla is its unfulfilled promise
- 4:06to fully autonomous driving and AI advancements.
- 4:09Being simply another automotive manufacturer is not going to cut
- 4:12it for a $750 billion valuation, said to Levska, emphasizing that
- 4:18Tesla's high valuation hinges on these future technologies and
- 4:22the company's failure to deliver on them.
- 4:24Thus far, in response to industry trends, Tesla has
- 4:28announced pay increases for workers at its US factories.
- 4:31This move follows similar actions by non union automakers
- 4:35like Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai coming in the wake of
- 4:39historic labor contracts securing the United Auto Workers
- 4:42or UAW for employees at Ford, General Motors and Solantis.
- 4:48Now the pay raises at Tesla, which were not detailed in terms
- 4:51of amounts, apply to all US production associates, material
- 4:55handlers and quality inspectors. This decision aligns with
- 4:59broader industry trends where automakers are increasing wages
- 5:02to remain competitive and respond to unitization efforts.
- 5:05So Tesla's not doing anything really out of the ordinary here.
- 5:09UAW President Sean Fain has identified Tesla as a key target
- 5:13in the union's expansion efforts following successful wage
- 5:16negotiations with the Big Three automakers.
- 5:18And Fain attributed past unization failures to internal
- 5:23corruption and unfavorable contracts, but remains
- 5:26optimistic about UA WS future prospects.
- 5:29Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, has historically been critical of
- 5:32unions. He's emphasized cost cutting
- 5:34measures in response to economic pressures and the need to make
- 5:37Tesla's electric vehicles more affordable.
- 5:39The increased wages for production workers, however, may
- 5:42complicate these cost reduction efforts.
- 5:45Tesla's Fremont factory, which employs over 20,000 workers, has
- 5:49seen the formation of a UAW organizing committee.
- 5:53The National Labor Relations Board previously ruled that
- 5:56Tesla violated labor laws during past unionization efforts.
- 6:00Tesla denies these allegation and is appealing the ruling in
- 6:03federal court. The pay increases at Tesla's US
- 6:06plans reflect A broader industry trend, though.
- 6:08Following the UAW successful strikes against the Big Three
- 6:11automakers. Other major car companies
- 6:14including Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota have also raised wages at
- 6:17their US factories in response to the unions.
- 6:20Now, the wage hikes at Tesla and other automakers show a
- 6:24significant shift in the automotive industry's labor
- 6:26dynamics. While these increases are a step
- 6:28toward addressing worker demands, they also reflect the
- 6:31changing economic landscape and the growing influence of Labor
- 6:35unions like the UAW. Now, Tesla's substantial market
- 6:39value loss marks a challenging start to 2024, contrasting
- 6:43sharply with its previous year's huge success.
- 6:46And the company faces multiple hurdles, including slowing EV
- 6:49demand, competitive market dynamics and increased labor
- 6:53costs. And despite these challenges,
- 6:55Tesla is the juggernaut in the EV industry.
- 6:58And now it's under new pressures.
- 7:00And the recent wage increases across the industry, including
- 7:03at Tesla, could mean a significant shift in Tesla's
- 7:06business. Hey, thank you so much for
