- 1:23This episode, we're going to take a deep dive into the best supporting actress nominees
- 1:29for the Academy Awards, but we can't do that without our co-host, Mr. Brandon Larson,
- 1:34in the building to give us the rundown.
- 1:37He's our resident film expertise over at the Yeah Buddy Podcast.
- 1:41Brandon, man, how you doing, bro?
- 1:44I'm doing awesome, Buddy.
- 1:45How are you?
- 1:46It's always a pleasure doing this podcast with you.
- 1:49Thank you, man.
- 1:50Thank you.
- 1:51Thank you for having me.
- 1:52Thank you, bro.
- 1:53I'm excited to get into this.
- 1:54We only have the best supporting actresses to talk about.
- 1:59That's only because, unfortunately, Chase Infinity was, I would say, snubbed for a lead
- 2:10actress nomination for this year Academy Awards.
- 2:14We're not going to dive too much into the lead actress category.
- 2:18That way, if anybody was wondering why we're not doing that, that's why we're not talking
- 2:23too much about it.
- 2:24We already have pretty much an agreement that the lead actress winner is going to be the
- 2:29Buckley lady from Hamnet.
- 2:31Yeah, Jessie Buckley is going to take it down.
- 2:34There's no one anywhere near what she was able to do in Hamnet.
- 2:40Although I feel that Chase Infinity was snubbed, I think she did an incredible job.
- 2:47In one battle after another for this being her first breakout film.
- 2:53I mean, what a way to start, right, buddy?
- 2:58But on the flip side of that, we got a tight competition here.
- 3:04This is neck and neck.
- 3:06Every single supporting actress is well deserving here.
- 3:12I'd like to go ahead and list them off for you.
- 3:16Yeah, we got Amy Madigan for Weapons.
- 3:21Tiana Taylor, one battle after another.
- 3:24We've got Inga Ibstadter-Lejos for Sentimental Value.
- 3:31We've got Wunmi Masaku for Sinners.
- 3:35We've got Elle Fanning for Sentimental Value.
- 3:38So you've got two actresses from Sentimental Value.
- 3:44I mean, wow, that's fantastic.
- 3:47Yeah, that's interesting because you never really heard of Sentimental Value
- 3:52at the Golden Globes, but then after that you didn't really hear too much about it.
- 3:57So it's interesting to see them have two nominees in the supporting actress race.
- 4:06Absolutely, so I guess let's just go down right one by one here.
- 4:11Let's start with Amy Madigan with Weapons.
- 4:15Did you check out Weapons at all?
- 4:17Did you see her performance in that?
- 4:19I've seen clips of it.
- 4:21I'm not too big on horror movies and stuff like that.
- 4:24It takes a lot for me to get in and watch horror movies.
- 4:28Especially when you're talking about witchcraft and all that type of stuff.
- 4:31Oh yeah.
- 4:33But I did see the movie, but I didn't see her performance.
- 4:37So performance-wise, I'd definitely say she's worthy.
- 4:41And like I said, it was interesting this year to see just the Oscars in general
- 4:47how supportive they've been of the horror genre this year.
- 4:51So with Amy Madigan getting nominated, that's definitely worthy and not a surprise at all.
- 4:59Yeah, I watched the whole film, buddy.
- 5:02I like horror, and I thought she did a fantastic job.
- 5:08This was an iconic role.
- 5:10This is something that when you think of Amy Madigan,
- 5:13you're going to think of Gladys, who she played in this movie.
- 5:17And people this year at Halloween were dressing up like her.
- 5:22I mean, this is iconic, buddy.
- 5:25This is an outstanding, her best work.
- 5:29Now she's been in the game for a long time.
- 5:32Her last Oscar nomination was back in 1986.
- 5:37That's like 40 years ago, man.
- 5:40She's been in the game a long time.
- 5:42So this is her second nomination here.
- 5:46And what I remember her from was Uncle Buck with John Candy,
- 5:54which is a really funny film if you haven't seen that.
- 5:57She has a small part in that, but it's memorable.
- 6:00And then Field of Dreams about baseball.
- 6:04That's huge.
- 6:06And so she played the wife of Kevin Cosner's character in that movie.
- 6:12So I've been watching her, and I wanted to mention in 1986,
- 6:16she was nominated for Twice in a Lifetime.
- 6:20So again, this performance she did this past year
- 6:26to get this nomination was absolutely fantastic.
- 6:30I was scared.
- 6:32And I don't scare easily, but her character freaked me out.
- 6:38It was like if I met this woman in real life,
- 6:42I'm like running.
- 6:44I'm running.
- 6:45And literally, there's like a funny run.
- 6:47I can't do it on camera.
- 6:49But it's like...
- 6:51It's like the Naruto run.
- 6:53I know what you're talking about.
- 6:55I know the run that you're talking about.
- 6:57Or just when she's running away from the kids and stuff like that.
- 7:00Yeah, yeah.
- 7:02So anyway, she carried this movie for me.
- 7:06She made this movie Weapons what it was.
- 7:09Without her, this movie would not have been as good.
- 7:13It was a good film, but man, did she have to carry this movie.
- 7:18And any scene that she was in,
- 7:20I was glued, literally glued to the television.
- 7:24Because I watched it on my TV.
- 7:27Yeah, I was reading or watching an interview
- 7:31where she was talking about...
- 7:33The director basically gave her a choice
- 7:35when it came to creating the character.
- 7:37They're like, you can either be like
- 7:39this type of witch character,
- 7:41which was what she played,
- 7:43or you can lead it to you're like an alien
- 7:46and you take over this person's body.
- 7:48You kind of choose.
- 7:50I'm assuming she went with the right choice
- 7:52of choosing the witch.
- 7:54But I'd definitely like to hear
- 7:56more about her backstory
- 7:58as far as how she chose
- 8:00to create that character.
- 8:04And how deeply grounded she was
- 8:08in this horror aspect
- 8:10is not easy to do.
- 8:12So I really do think she's a frontrunner here.
- 8:15For the Oscar?
- 8:17Yes, absolutely.
- 8:19I really think that
- 8:21she is a contender here.
- 8:23And she's not one that
- 8:25you can just eliminate easily.
- 8:27Because again,
- 8:29this role is an iconic role.
- 8:31You're going to see people
- 8:33dressing up like this person
- 8:35at Halloween.
- 8:37This is Michael Myers, man.
- 8:39This is GLaDOS.
- 8:41And so I think
- 8:43the way she looked, the makeup,
- 8:45the look, everything about her,
- 8:47the way she spoke,
- 8:49the way she carried herself.
- 8:51There's a scene, I don't want to give it away,
- 8:53but she asked for a bowl of water.
- 8:55And usually you say,
- 8:57I want a glass of water, right buddy?
- 8:59You don't say you want a bowl of water.
- 9:01And I was like,
- 9:03what is going on with this lady?
- 9:07And so everything that she did
- 9:09was weird,
- 9:11weirdly scary
- 9:13and I can't get this
- 9:15woman out of my mind
- 9:17the way she looks.
- 9:19She gives me nightmares, buddy.
- 9:21She gives me nightmares.
- 9:23That's why I said I stay away from that type of movies.
- 9:25Oh, man.
- 9:27Well, you
- 9:29did the right thing because
- 9:31I'm like,
- 9:33she haunts me in my
- 9:35dreams now, watching this movie.
- 9:37But no,
- 9:39let's move on.
- 9:41No, let's talk about this a little bit more
- 9:43because you surprised me
- 9:45with
- 9:47being the front runner
- 9:49because she
- 9:51did win the SAG award
- 9:53for Best Supporting Actress
- 9:55but I haven't really seen her name too much
- 9:57around in the
- 9:59award season
- 10:01buzz
- 10:03as far as being
- 10:05a major contender.
- 10:07Being nominated, of course,
- 10:09yeah, but being a contender
- 10:11as far as taking home the trophy?
- 10:13Yeah, I think
- 10:15I really do because
- 10:17again, when you create
- 10:19a character that is so
- 10:21iconic where
- 10:23if you watch this
- 10:25movie, I
- 10:27feel like the level
- 10:29of detail that she
- 10:31put into this character
- 10:33is unforgettable.
- 10:35It's chilling, it's unlike
- 10:37anything I've seen
- 10:39in a long time and
- 10:41that's when I'm comparing her
- 10:43with these other actresses,
- 10:45I have to give her
- 10:47a lot of weight here
- 10:49because I don't think that anyone
- 10:51could have played this part
- 10:53as well as she did
- 10:55and she's not an actress
- 10:57where you're thinking, oh yeah,
- 10:59Amy Madigan, you know her,
- 11:02right? This is
- 11:04something where she's
- 11:06sort of like Delroy, right?
- 11:08Delroy's been in the game a long time but people
- 11:10forgot about him and I think
- 11:12this is the same case for Amy
- 11:14is that we've forgotten about how
- 11:16good she is and she's
- 11:18reminding us how good
- 11:20she is in this performance.
- 11:22Just like Delroy.
- 11:24Delroy's been in the game for just as
- 11:26long as she has and
- 11:28I don't think you can discount
- 11:30the work that she's done in this movie
- 11:32where she is
- 11:34like comparison to
- 11:36all the other actors in this movie
- 11:38she just
- 11:40absolutely steals the show
- 11:42in this movie.
- 11:44Like you literally
- 11:46could have another
- 11:48movie about this
- 11:50and have her keep playing the
- 11:52character over and over
- 11:54and over again.
- 11:56That's how good it was.
- 11:58Okay.
- 12:00I'm not trying to say
- 12:02that she's
- 12:04going to win. I think she
- 12:06has a very strong chance
- 12:08to win and
- 12:10I think she's a front runner
- 12:12with someone else when we get to her.
- 12:14I'll let you know who but
- 12:16right now she is one of the
- 12:18front runners to me.
- 12:20Okay. Let's save
- 12:22Tiana for last.
- 12:24Alright. So let's talk about
- 12:26Inge Ibstadter
- 12:28Laeos
- 12:30who's Norwegian.
- 12:32She did a really
- 12:34excellent job in Sentimental Value
- 12:36plays the sister.
- 12:38A really lovely part
- 12:40supporting the main
- 12:42actress in this movie
- 12:46Renate Reinsvej.
- 12:48What did you think of her
- 12:50performance in Sentimental Value?
- 12:52I know you saw the film
- 12:54She was the one that played the daughter, right?
- 12:56She was the one that played the daughter.
- 12:58The real life daughter.
- 13:00Yeah.
- 13:02So the
- 13:04Stellan Skarsgård's
- 13:06character, the film director
- 13:08has got two daughters.
- 13:10Okay. And so the
- 13:12eldest is the main
- 13:14actress, the lead
- 13:16actress who also got nominated
- 13:18Renate Reinsvej.
- 13:20And then Inge, she plays
- 13:22the sister.
- 13:24And so most of her scenes
- 13:26are with the main actress.
- 13:28And so
- 13:30they have like a couple emotional
- 13:32scenes where they're
- 13:34on
- 13:36it's like an intimate scene where
- 13:38they're having a
- 13:40heart to heart about their father,
- 13:42about their past.
- 13:44And it's just really touching.
- 13:46They're at the table talking.
- 13:48Just really simple
- 13:50but family type
- 13:52conversations that you might
- 13:54have in your own family
- 13:56where it's about a family dynamic
- 13:58of things not going so well.
- 14:00And I felt like she really
- 14:02supported
- 14:04the main actress in this
- 14:06movie really well. I think
- 14:08that she gave a
- 14:10very natural,
- 14:12heartfelt performance here
- 14:14and she held her own
- 14:16with the lead
- 14:18actors in this movie.
- 14:20Yeah, with
- 14:22sentimental value, that wasn't
- 14:24a movie where
- 14:26I
- 14:28was
- 14:30super caught up into it.
- 14:32I definitely think we had talked about
- 14:34just how they was able to
- 14:36capture the
- 14:38relationships between
- 14:40working in the film industry and
- 14:42trying to balance
- 14:44your real life relationships, your
- 14:46personal relationships with your family
- 14:48or whatever.
- 14:50So from that aspect, like I said, there was nothing
- 14:52that I took too much away from sentimental
- 14:54value outside of that.
- 14:56So I could see
- 14:58where the nominations
- 15:00come from, like from the Academy standpoint
- 15:02because they could look at
- 15:04all of these characters, like
- 15:06the two characters that are nominated for
- 15:08supporting actress, lead actress,
- 15:10Stella Skargaard for supporting
- 15:12actor, whatever. I could see how they could look at
- 15:14those characters
- 15:16and
- 15:18relate to all those characters
- 15:20to where they could say,
- 15:22I know somebody
- 15:24like this person, to where
- 15:26now those performances are
- 15:28award nominated
- 15:30but I don't really see them
- 15:32going too much
- 15:34after that. I don't see them
- 15:36winning.
- 15:38I see them getting the nominations
- 15:40because those characters
- 15:42are characters
- 15:44that the people who are voting can relate to
- 15:46but I don't really see them
- 15:48being front runners
- 15:50for anything. They're just
- 15:52very good relatable characters.
- 15:54And I agree wholeheartedly
- 15:56here and it's not to take away
- 15:58from her performance but this is not
- 16:00an Oscar winning performance.
- 16:02However, I've got to
- 16:04tell you, this is going to help
- 16:06her career. Getting this nomination
- 16:08will help.
- 16:10I mean, this is her first nomination.
- 16:12It's really her first
- 16:14big part that we've seen
- 16:16in a global standpoint.
- 16:18Now, picture this.
- 16:20You're coming from Norway, right?
- 16:22So you're just now getting
- 16:24known. This is putting her on the map
- 16:26to where she's going to be
- 16:28considered now for other films.
- 16:30She's on people's
- 16:32radar and now people
- 16:34are going to start to think about her
- 16:36when they're writing scripts
- 16:38and so I think
- 16:40that she is a really great
- 16:42actress and she's
- 16:44going to play certain parts,
- 16:46right? We're all typecasted as
- 16:50actors.
- 16:52We all look a certain way,
- 16:54talk a certain way, and that's
- 16:56the game.
- 16:58However, I think that she is
- 17:00someone that is
- 17:02so talented
- 17:04and after seeing her performance
- 17:06I look forward to seeing
- 17:08what she does next.
- 17:12You think she is?
- 17:14As far as
- 17:16coming from another country, did she make that
- 17:18move to the United States or just keep
- 17:20making these foreign films?
- 17:22I think she's going to do both
- 17:24but what I'm saying is that
- 17:26this put her on the map
- 17:28because I didn't know
- 17:30her before this movie
- 17:32and so her getting this
- 17:34nomination is
- 17:36critical for her acting
- 17:38career because it's only
- 17:40going to help get
- 17:42her those next lead
- 17:44parts that she might be looking
- 17:46for to carry a movie
- 17:48but she really supported
- 17:50this film and she did an excellent
- 17:52job.
- 17:54So her compared to Elle Fanning,
- 17:56who do you see? If you had to choose
- 17:58one of them, well let's go to Elle Fanning's character
- 18:00because she plays an actress
- 18:02in the movie.
- 18:04How do you see her role compared
- 18:06to the other actresses role being nominated
- 18:08for the same movie?
- 18:10So Elle is interesting
- 18:12because I'm more familiar
- 18:14with Dakota Fanning.
- 18:16We all know
- 18:18Dakota Fanning, she was in
- 18:20that Denzel movie
- 18:22was it Man on Fire?
- 18:24Do you remember that one?
- 18:26So
- 18:28Elle, this is a breakout
- 18:30role for her too
- 18:32because I was taking a look at her
- 18:34and the movie that I remember
- 18:36Elle from back in
- 18:38the day was Super 8. It was kind
- 18:40of like sci-fi
- 18:42if you saw it.
- 18:44And
- 18:46so this is her first
- 18:48nomination and in terms of her
- 18:50performance in this movie
- 18:52I thought she was memorable
- 18:54and she
- 18:56played an American which worked
- 18:58in the movie because she is an American
- 19:00and so
- 19:02you got to hear
- 19:04most of the movie is in Norwegian
- 19:06and so you're reading
- 19:08subtitles but her character
- 19:10primarily speaks in English
- 19:12and so that prompts
- 19:14the other characters in the movie to also
- 19:16speak English
- 19:18and so I felt
- 19:20that Elle is going to
- 19:22probably do
- 19:24more after this
- 19:26in America just because
- 19:28she's got that
- 19:30Fannie name.
- 19:32She's got the name, the last name
- 19:34Dakota
- 19:36put her
- 19:38we could say that because
- 19:40a lot of this is
- 19:42family like if you're
- 19:44Tom Hanks and
- 19:46you're Tom Hanks
- 19:48I see it similar to
- 19:50if you're talking about
- 19:52if you were to take
- 19:54the Olsen twins
- 19:56the Olsen twins is like Dakota
- 19:58but you have Elizabeth Olsen is
- 20:00probably a way better
- 20:02actress
- 20:04than the Olsen twins but the Olsen twins
- 20:06are just more famous so she got that
- 20:08exposure but
- 20:10it wouldn't be too much
- 20:12of an argument or a debate
- 20:14to say that Elizabeth Olsen is
- 20:16the more talented if you're talking about
- 20:18just acting skill wise
- 20:20is the more talented
- 20:22of the sisters and you could almost
- 20:24say that both of the Fannie
- 20:26sisters are both talented but Dakota
- 20:28is famous but
- 20:30Dakota was also
- 20:32nominated for an Academy Award though
- 20:36at like a super
- 20:38young age
- 20:40Yeah you make great points
- 20:42here buddy I think when you
- 20:44stop and look at it
- 20:46Elle's not going away
- 20:48she is a really great
- 20:50actress and this was a meaty
- 20:52part for her she really
- 20:54supported the film she deserved
- 20:56an Oscar nomination
- 20:58here I don't think
- 21:00that she's going to win
- 21:02compared to these other
- 21:04actresses
- 21:06that we've got here
- 21:08but certainly she's got
- 21:10a bright future
- 21:12she's going to be one to look out for
- 21:14probably more so than Inga
- 21:16at least here in the States
- 21:18we're going to get to see Elle a little
- 21:20bit more I think just because
- 21:22if you live here
- 21:24it's probably going to be
- 21:26easier because you're going to have
- 21:28I feel like you must
- 21:30have a harder road
- 21:32to Hollywood if you're coming from
- 21:34another country wouldn't you agree
- 21:36because if you're in the U.S.
- 21:42I think to
- 21:44some degree just because you can understand
- 21:46how the business side of things work
- 21:48over here
- 21:50but
- 21:52like let's say overseas
- 21:54they're trained to have careers
- 21:56in not just
- 21:58movies but we're talking about just acting
- 22:00in general whether it be for the stage
- 22:02movies
- 22:04films like that is
- 22:06a legit
- 22:08career not to say that it isn't up here
- 22:10but up here I think
- 22:12as far as American
- 22:14actors go
- 22:16it's become more about
- 22:18just being on TV
- 22:20and being famous rather than
- 22:22actually having a career
- 22:24so
- 22:26it's a little bit both and a lot of
- 22:28movies are going overseas now
- 22:30so these
- 22:32how back in the days how we used to have those
- 22:34you know those day player
- 22:36roles you just get one line or
- 22:38whatever something that might help break you up
- 22:40to the next thing if those roles are going
- 22:42if they're filming these productions
- 22:44in London, overseas,
- 22:46Toronto, you know just these
- 22:48foreign countries then those
- 22:50bit parts that
- 22:52as American actors
- 22:54we used to depend on to get like our SAG
- 22:56eligibility to get our SAG membership
- 22:58or you know just something to get our residuals
- 23:00and for our residuals
- 23:02those parts
- 23:04are going overseas too as well
- 23:06so it's kind of shifted
- 23:08with the territory of the business almost
- 23:10I agree
- 23:12with everything you're saying buddy
- 23:14my biggest point was
- 23:16that sentimental value as
- 23:18a film came from Norway
- 23:20and we wouldn't have seen these
- 23:22actresses nominated if it
- 23:24weren't for how good this film
- 23:26was as a whole
- 23:28you know Joachim
- 23:30Trier directed it, it was a
- 23:32fantastic film, it's one of the best
- 23:34picture nominees
- 23:36that's how good it is
- 23:38I think it's going to win best
- 23:40foreign film
- 23:42by far it was the best foreign film
- 23:44of the year hands down
- 23:46if it doesn't win for best foreign
- 23:48picture I just
- 23:50don't agree
- 23:52I think that it should win
- 23:54because it was an extremely
- 23:56well done film and you had
- 23:58extremely
- 24:00fantastic performances all around
- 24:02from every single actor in this
- 24:04movie
- 24:08oh yeah yeah
- 24:10nothing to disagree with you on that
- 24:12you're totally right
- 24:14with that
- 24:16not too much of a dig
- 24:18it's a pretty clean
- 24:20cookie cutter type of film as far as
- 24:22like
- 24:24breaking it down from an artistic standpoint
- 24:26it's pretty
- 24:28easy to break down
- 24:30nothing too complicated
- 24:32about it and like I said it's the type
- 24:34of film that when you just break it down
- 24:36from the aspect of looking at family
- 24:38family values
- 24:40that's where it also
- 24:42becomes relatable too to where it's able
- 24:44to transcend from being a
- 24:46foreign film to being
- 24:48a film that anybody could
- 24:50watch
- 24:52outside of the
- 24:54subtitles
- 24:56I think it's one of those films too that you
- 24:58can study on multiple
- 25:00levels for
- 25:02filmmaking as well as acting
- 25:04if you want a master class
- 25:06at how good
- 25:08you need to be as an
- 25:10actor every single
- 25:12person in this movie was
- 25:14like they were real people I was
- 25:16watching something real
- 25:18when I saw this movie so
- 25:20I'm definitely going
- 25:22to look at the techniques that they
- 25:24all use to better
- 25:26myself and I encourage every
- 25:28actor to when you're looking
- 25:30at a movie figure
- 25:32out why how is
- 25:34it that this actor is so good
- 25:36why is it that their
- 25:38presence is captivating you right
- 25:40now because we all want to improve
- 25:42is it the stillness
- 25:44because stillness reads on
- 25:46camera is it that emotional
- 25:48connection it's
- 25:50got to be all of the above right
- 25:52like you've got to be connected
- 25:54you've got to know your character backwards
- 25:56and forwards you've got to be centered
- 25:58grounded in the breath
- 26:00and all these things in the moment
- 26:02when you're delivering your lines
- 26:04as if you're
- 26:06saying it for the first time
- 26:08and I felt in this
- 26:10movie it was like
- 26:12everything
- 26:14acting related
- 26:16was so profound
- 26:18and excellent like
- 26:20excellent level acting
- 26:22from everybody
- 26:24and I think that's what you
- 26:26get I guess
- 26:28to my point that's what you kind of get
- 26:30now from these
- 26:32foreign films these actors
- 26:34that are coming from these other countries
- 26:36just
- 26:38they're kind of setting the new
- 26:40tone for what it is to
- 26:42be to make a professional film
- 26:44to be a professional actor just to
- 26:46really bring home drive home
- 26:48these professional performances
- 26:52you know Denzel talks about
- 26:54how important it is to start
- 26:56in the theater if you're an actor
- 26:58and I agree
- 27:00I started out in the theater and I
- 27:02highly recommend it because you
- 27:04only get one take and so
- 27:06imagine if you're casting
- 27:08a theater actor
- 27:10and they're able to transition
- 27:12to film acting fairly
- 27:14simple with the right techniques
- 27:16they can pull it back
- 27:18I think when you're
- 27:20giving a grounded
- 27:22performance and wouldn't
- 27:24you rather have an actor on
- 27:26set that can do it in one
- 27:28take
- 27:30yeah
- 27:32at least an actor that can do
- 27:34a different take each take
- 27:36something to give me some sort of variety
- 27:38exactly
- 27:40yeah
- 27:42and I think that that's
- 27:44what Elle Fanning did here was
- 27:46she was emotionally
- 27:48grounded in her performance
- 27:50and she allowed
- 27:52herself to be vulnerable
- 27:54as well as Inge
- 27:56who we talked about
- 27:58both of those actresses
- 28:00were so
- 28:02emotionally available to
- 28:04their scene partner that
- 28:06I believed
- 28:08the pain and
- 28:10the journey of these
- 28:12characters and what they were going
- 28:14through in the story
- 28:16and I just loved the
- 28:18language
- 28:20no Norwegian
- 28:22but what they were saying
- 28:24was like wow
- 28:26I believe it I believe what they're
- 28:28saying
- 28:34the next one we got
- 28:36to talk about is
- 28:38Wunmi Masaku
- 28:40Wunmi
- 28:42yes and
- 28:44we are both on team Sinners
- 28:46yeah we both
- 28:48we both jump ship from one battle
- 28:50yeah that's why I wanted to talk about
- 28:52Tiana Lass
- 28:54we'll talk about it
- 28:56I think she had a lot of steam going into
- 28:58the beginning of it
- 29:00but we'll talk about
- 29:02that when we get to Tiana but yeah Wunmi
- 29:04yeah
- 29:06and she is a front runner
- 29:08buddy she
- 29:10is a contender
- 29:12she can take it down
- 29:14I think
- 29:16I mean I think it's
- 29:18between her and Amy
- 29:20that's I think that's what it's
- 29:22right now it's neck and neck
- 29:24and Tiana's
- 29:26right there but I think these two other
- 29:28ladies wow
- 29:30yeah
- 29:32extremely believable
- 29:34from Wunmi yeah
- 29:36this was unforgettable
- 29:38for me I don't
- 29:40think that I mean this
- 29:42is something that I can't forget
- 29:44the movie as a whole I loved
- 29:46as you know
- 29:48saw it again in Oakland it was
- 29:50fantastic in 70
- 29:52millimeter
- 29:56and I felt
- 29:58like her performance was
- 30:00such at a high level that
- 30:02every actor in Sinners
- 30:04was phenomenal
- 30:06there wasn't an actor who
- 30:08didn't deserve
- 30:10an Oscar nomination for
- 30:12performance and I just
- 30:14think it goes to the casting
- 30:16that the casting
- 30:18was fantastic
- 30:20for this movie I think
- 30:22you know everything about the movie
- 30:24but let's specifically talk
- 30:26about her
- 30:28this is her first nomination
- 30:30every single actress
- 30:32it's their first
- 30:34nomination except for
- 30:36Amy I think that's
- 30:38good to note that
- 30:40this is a breakout
- 30:42role for me
- 30:44the other
- 30:46movie that I
- 30:48remember Wunmi from is
- 30:50Deadpool and Wolverine I don't
- 30:52know if you checked that out but she was in
- 30:54that
- 30:56she was one of the TVA
- 30:58agents
- 31:00in Deadpool
- 31:02and Wolverine but Wunmi
- 31:04I think yeah man
- 31:06the thing that
- 31:08I like about
- 31:10her
- 31:12I want her to be the
- 31:14front runner what it's going to get down to
- 31:16with the actresses the nitty gritty of it
- 31:18I think is the supporting actresses
- 31:20is going to be
- 31:22um
- 31:24how much did they
- 31:26support the film
- 31:28you know like when you look at
- 31:30like Amy Madigan being
- 31:32the um
- 31:34you know she's the person
- 31:36Amy Madigan could have just as easily
- 31:38been nominated for the best lead actress if they
- 31:40chose to put her in that category
- 31:42you know what I'm saying and that's just where it comes down
- 31:44to smart campaigning where
- 31:46they just look at where
- 31:48she had a better
- 31:50chance and this goes back to Warner
- 31:52Brothers just having a whole plethora
- 31:54of movies because Weapons is another Warner
- 31:56Brothers movie so they're like
- 31:58we're just trying to get
- 32:00something in there it's very interesting
- 32:02to see how they chose to nominate
- 32:04Amy Madigan for supporting actress
- 32:06um
- 32:08um
- 32:10as opposed to you know being the lead
- 32:12because I mean
- 32:14they could have they could have made her the lead
- 32:16they could have
- 32:18well it gives her leverage
- 32:20though buddy it gives Amy more
- 32:22leverage here and that's why I think she's
- 32:24going to take it down
- 32:26but I think Wunmi with
- 32:28the success of Sinners
- 32:30I think that because
- 32:32Sinners is I
- 32:34mean I think I'm going to just
- 32:36prediction right here prediction buddy
- 32:38I think Sinners
- 32:40is going to break the record
- 32:42for most Oscar
- 32:44wins ever
- 32:46yeah ever
- 32:48I think it's going to be a tough race
- 32:5012
- 32:52you think it's going to take down 12
- 32:5412 Oscars it's going to be a tough race I'd love to
- 32:56see that I'd love to see that it's
- 32:58going to be a tough race because
- 33:00this is the first award season especially
- 33:02we're talking about with the with the supporting actress
- 33:04category where
- 33:06usually
- 33:08every award show leading up to it
- 33:10you know you could kind of tell like who's the
- 33:12front runner or whatever but every single
- 33:14award ceremony is kind of
- 33:16awarded a different actress to where it's
- 33:18kind of up in the air with it because I
- 33:20don't even know if let's hear
- 33:22it Amy Madigan was she
- 33:24she wasn't so Wunmi just
- 33:26won the Baptist for best supporting
- 33:28actress that Amy just won the
- 33:30the Actors Award for best supporting
- 33:32actress Tiana won the
- 33:34Golden Globe for best supporting actress
- 33:36uh
- 33:40it's just it's just such a toss up
- 33:42man it's such a toss up and that's
- 33:44what make and that's what makes this category
- 33:46so hard because Wunmi could
- 33:48take it down like she
- 33:50is a contender here and she's
- 33:52a heavy hitter because
- 33:54of everybody in
- 33:56centers everybody in centers
- 33:58was fantastic buddy
- 34:00like there wasn't a bad performance
- 34:02that I got did you
- 34:04did you see any
- 34:06buddies
- 34:08and that's almost where you kind of
- 34:10that's almost where they could kind of look at it
- 34:12and be like because everybody did such a good
- 34:14job
- 34:16that's where I could see where you say
- 34:18with Amy Madigan be the front
- 34:20runner because with everybody
- 34:22does such a good job how
- 34:24it's easy for the overall
- 34:26movie to stand out but now when you're talking about
- 34:28the individual performance
- 34:30it's so easy to
- 34:32to overlook a great performance
- 34:34when everybody brought their A game
- 34:36and that's what makes
- 34:38this tough for me is like
- 34:40Amy Madigan was by
- 34:42far the best actor in this
- 34:44movie weapons like there
- 34:46was nobody that was close
- 34:48to what she did
- 34:50like and I'm not trying to put down the film
- 34:52the film was interesting and
- 34:54scary and all that but
- 34:56if I had to talk from an acting
- 34:58standpoint who was the most
- 35:00believable it was her and
- 35:02she carried that movie this movie would
- 35:04not be anything
- 35:06what it is without the
- 35:08level of specificity
- 35:10and
- 35:12just interesting choices
- 35:14and frightening
- 35:16like I was freaked out buddy
- 35:18like if you watch this movie you're gonna
- 35:20know what I'm talking about like
- 35:22and if you've seen weapons
- 35:24definitely this is not for your
- 35:26kids because
- 35:28it is scary
- 35:30like if I have
- 35:32nightmares you're gonna have nightmares
- 35:34but with Wound Me
- 35:36this was a believable performance
- 35:38buddy this is a
- 35:40performance that's gonna go
- 35:42down in history for me
- 35:44she was one of the more grounded characters
- 35:46in the movie
- 35:48she was one of the more grounded ones
- 35:50she was the one that kind of knew everything
- 35:52she was the one that was kind of explaining to the audience
- 35:54everything that was going on
- 35:56so that way nobody's kind of
- 35:58kind of you know lost
- 36:00because you kind of need that type of character that
- 36:02um
- 36:04subliminally is tell
- 36:06the audience
- 36:08what's going on in the movie so the audience
- 36:10doesn't feel lost and so that's where I feel like
- 36:12she becomes the most relatable character
- 36:14you can even kind of tell like what her character
- 36:16everybody see the movie but when her character
- 36:18passes away or whatever
- 36:20um now everything is
- 36:22kind of lost everything kind of blows up everything is
- 36:24you know what I'm saying it's up for
- 36:26grabs kind of
- 36:28kind of aspect and she
- 36:30also speaks to the importance of
- 36:32what black women mean to black culture
- 36:34you know um just the importance
- 36:36to how
- 36:38important they are to how much
- 36:40a strong black woman is
- 36:42to a strong black
- 36:44man you know
- 36:46uh there's a reason why
- 36:48there's a reason
- 36:50why smoke lasted longer than stack
- 36:52you know
- 36:54what I'm saying
- 36:56but piggybacking off
- 36:58what you're saying there buddy
- 37:00is it the chemistry
- 37:02that Wunmi
- 37:04and Michael B had was
- 37:06so believable
- 37:08I believed that they had
- 37:10a kid you know I
- 37:12believe that they lost their child
- 37:14and I'm sorry if
- 37:16we're spoiling it for those who
- 37:18haven't checked out Sinners
- 37:20but um
- 37:22I just have to make reference to that
- 37:24because it's something that happens
- 37:26to the character and
- 37:28that's not an easy thing to play
- 37:30that's not an easy thing
- 37:32to play uh
- 37:34losing your child and then
- 37:36also still
- 37:38loving uh your
- 37:40you know
- 37:42your significant other if whether
- 37:44you broke up or not it kind of
- 37:46makes it feel like they're
- 37:48are they together or are they not together
- 37:50well they're together
- 37:52right buddy
- 37:54so they clearly still love each
- 37:56other and uh you can see
- 37:58that and you can feel
- 38:00the love the love feels real
- 38:02in the movie and then at the end
- 38:04like you say that heartbreaking moment
- 38:06where it's like if this happens
- 38:08you need to take me out
- 38:10take me out
- 38:12right I don't want to be
- 38:14a vampire
- 38:16so
- 38:18like that whole moment
- 38:20for me was outstanding
- 38:22and that that that's what's
- 38:24great about this is that
- 38:26that's what makes this so tough because
- 38:28every single supporting actress
- 38:30in this category they all
- 38:32had one of those moments that you could say
- 38:34that's why they're
- 38:36nominated
- 38:38yeah
- 38:40so let's go with um
- 38:42uh tiana taylor cause
- 38:44tiana taylor has to be well this is what we're all about
- 38:46you know one battle after another
- 38:48and tiana taylor she was
- 38:50at the very beginning
- 38:52just like I always say with timothy chalamet
- 38:54was the front
- 38:56runner for the best
- 38:58supporting actress
- 39:00uh oscar
- 39:02but as we can see through this
- 39:04whole award season has gone on
- 39:06our opinions have changed a little bit
- 39:08which of course is going to
- 39:10happen um but
- 39:12let's kind of speak it to what
- 39:14it was that we first saw with
- 39:16with um with tiana taylor
- 39:18that
- 39:20made her the front runner and it's
- 39:22nothing that she has done
- 39:24wrong to make us change our opinion
- 39:26it's more so just now that we're getting down to the
- 39:28nitty gritty of it all these
- 39:30other performances are standing
- 39:32out and where I feel
- 39:34that it like I said
- 39:36it's coming down to is
- 39:38being the supporting actress how much
- 39:40did you really support the film
- 39:42and this is where
- 39:44um camera time
- 39:46will come into play
- 39:48and how much camera time she really had
- 39:50on film to make that sort of
- 39:52impact her character was a very
- 39:54impactful character in the film
- 39:56but we just didn't get too much of her
- 39:58yeah and
- 40:00the thing is is with tiana
- 40:02for me what
- 40:04I liked about her was how
- 40:06how much risks
- 40:08that she took in her performance
- 40:10she took a lot of risks
- 40:12and I don't know that people fully
- 40:14understand the level
- 40:16of detail that she put
- 40:18into this role buddy so
- 40:20I'm only going to lift her up and speak
- 40:22positive things about this performance
- 40:24because it was so believable
- 40:26for me and why
- 40:28and why I wanted her to win
- 40:30and and you know
- 40:32I was glad that she won
- 40:34the Golden Globe because I felt that
- 40:36she earned it
- 40:38you know and and she earned this
- 40:40nomination buddy for her
- 40:42specificity
- 40:44and she was
- 40:46magnetic on screen every
- 40:48time that she was on screen whether
- 40:50it was not a long time
- 40:52it was magnetic it there was
- 40:54something about her energy that
- 40:56she was able to
- 40:58you know captivate me
- 41:00where I could not take my
- 41:02eyes off of her and what she
- 41:04was doing everything she was
- 41:06doing for me was solid
- 41:08fantastic
- 41:10I haven't seen a performance like this
- 41:12in a long time where I can say
- 41:14yeah maybe I do
- 41:16want to see perfidia
- 41:18and see her whole life story
- 41:20in a movie I saw
- 41:22that that she'd like to
- 41:24maybe do that if
- 41:26if the opportunity came out
- 41:28I don't think Thomas Davis is doing
- 41:30that I mean that'd be great but I don't think
- 41:32it took him too long to get this movie
- 41:34done he's all like nah we
- 41:36cool boo maybe he'll produce something
- 41:38maybe he'll produce something for her
- 41:40but directing I don't know
- 41:42about that but he might produce something for her
- 41:44correct and but
- 41:46I like what she said and
- 41:48I did pick up on these tidbits
- 41:50when I watched the movie that she
- 41:52was having postpartum and that's
- 41:54why Leo's character had to take
- 41:56care of the baby because she was having
- 41:58some postpartum
- 42:00depression and I felt
- 42:02like that that I got
- 42:04that when I watched the movie
- 42:06and then
- 42:08also that
- 42:10at the end of the movie that
- 42:12that letter
- 42:14to the daughter
- 42:16was so touching
- 42:18right like that
- 42:20voiceover that she does
- 42:22because I believe it was a voiceover
- 42:24correct me if I'm wrong but we
- 42:26hear her voice
- 42:28again and
- 42:30so but
- 42:32her performance was in
- 42:34the beginning of the movie
- 42:36with all
- 42:38the revolutionary stuff going
- 42:40on in the movie and
- 42:42you felt like this level of like
- 42:44she's a badass right like she
- 42:46she's a badass in this movie
- 42:48is she not yeah no yeah
- 42:50most definitely and
- 42:52so for me it's like
- 42:54if if I'm
- 42:56with a gal like that like
- 42:58okay yeah I'm gonna feel safe
- 43:00you know like
- 43:02yeah but
- 43:04at any event
- 43:06she I really
- 43:08loved her character I loved
- 43:10all of her choices and
- 43:12I felt like she did the level
- 43:14of a work that you're supposed to
- 43:16and she was so specific
- 43:18in the way she made her choices
- 43:20and I think that that's
- 43:22what made her a personal favorite
- 43:24for me was I could see
- 43:26the work as an
- 43:28actor and appreciate
- 43:30her work
- 43:32yeah and
- 43:34she was in fact if
- 43:36we're saying who's better than who
- 43:38she edges
- 43:40out to these other actresses
- 43:42for me to to put her
- 43:44in the category of
- 43:46me and Amy I have
- 43:48to put her in that category
- 43:50buddy that that she's neck and neck
- 43:52with other these other actresses
- 43:54yeah yeah
- 43:56and the one thing that I will also take away from
- 43:58with Tiana she
- 44:00probably because I know we talked about this
- 44:02being Chase Affinity's first big role
- 44:04but
- 44:06Tiana probably had the
- 44:08most pressure out of everybody else
- 44:10because she
- 44:12I want to say the most famous
- 44:14but she's probably the
- 44:16most popular
- 44:18person like right now
- 44:20out of anybody that was in that movie she's probably the
- 44:22most popular and
- 44:24she had the most to prove from the
- 44:26standpoint of the fact that the things that she
- 44:28was known for
- 44:30had nothing to
- 44:32do with acting or her acting
- 44:34abilities yeah she had done some acting
- 44:36projects before you know Tyler
- 44:38Perry but
- 44:40there's a big difference
- 44:42between doing a Tyler Perry movie
- 44:44and then being in a movie
- 44:46Leonardo DiCaprio and so
- 44:48with everything that she's been known for like doing the
- 44:50reality TV show the
- 44:52music all this type of stuff
- 44:54she actually had the
- 44:56most pressure
- 44:58out of all these
- 45:00other nominees
- 45:02to actually
- 45:04put forth the performance and do
- 45:06what do what she did
- 45:08when she knocked it out the park
- 45:10oh absolutely
- 45:12and this is only going to continue
- 45:14to help her move forward in
- 45:16her acting career we're going to see more
- 45:18from Tiana I think she's
- 45:20going to be nominated again
- 45:22like who
- 45:24does she remind you in terms of
- 45:26another actress that you can think
- 45:28of is she
- 45:30the next Angela
- 45:32Bassett like who do you think
- 45:34who do you think
- 45:36nobody's touching
- 45:38Angela Bassett's greatness
- 45:40nobody
- 45:42you gotta
- 45:44no we can't
- 45:46I love Tiana but we can't
- 45:48Angela Bassett
- 45:50is on a whole
- 45:52other level as far
- 45:54as the input she's done something from
- 45:56every generation
- 45:58she has
- 46:00put forth
- 46:02and we're just going to get on Angela Bassett for a second
- 46:04she has put forth something
- 46:06to every generation
- 46:08she's done something to
- 46:10empower
- 46:12black women or put black women
- 46:14on that spotlight whether you're talking about
- 46:16the 80 like whatever she did
- 46:18the Tina Ike
- 46:20a Tina Turner movie you know what I'm saying
- 46:22fantastic
- 46:24or if you're talking about the late
- 46:2690s or whatever which you know Stella
- 46:28got her groove back or way to
- 46:30excel or all those type of like
- 46:32she
- 46:34put off her you know what I'm saying or
- 46:36you get into like Black Panther
- 46:38being the queen of Wakanda like
- 46:40I love Tiana but yeah she can't
- 46:42yeah no I would say
- 46:44Tiana
- 46:46I'd say Tiana's
- 46:48in a course all of her own
- 46:50just from the standpoint that
- 46:52she could literally sit back
- 46:54after this movie and do
- 46:56what she wants to do if she wants to sit
- 46:58back and say let me keep making movies
- 47:00keep making movies if she wants to say let me just focus
- 47:02on music put out a CD
- 47:04go on a tour
- 47:06she could do that so
- 47:08she's so multi
- 47:10Tiana's so multi talented
- 47:12she could pull a Rihanna if she wants
- 47:14to just be like I'm gonna just do a
- 47:16clothing line you know if she wants
- 47:18to do a clothing line based off of her
- 47:20one battle after another character or something
- 47:22like that but she's in that
- 47:24realm to where she
- 47:26such a entrepreneur
- 47:28that she
- 47:30can literally take this and do whatever she wants with it
- 47:32well I still
- 47:34think Tiana is aspiring
- 47:36to be that great
- 47:38to be that great
- 47:40that's all I'm trying to say
- 47:42is that you know in today's
- 47:44generation who is
- 47:46the next one up
- 47:48who's coming up
- 47:50and she's coming up
- 47:52that's all I'm trying to say
- 47:54is that you know we
- 47:56we both grew up with Angela
- 47:58Bassett I grew up watching her
- 48:00and love
- 48:02her acting I think she's incredible
- 48:04but in terms of
- 48:06today's generation
- 48:08these younger kids are looking
- 48:10at Tiana right
- 48:12do they necessarily know
- 48:14Angela Bassett the way that
- 48:16we do is all I'm trying to say
- 48:18so who is
- 48:20gonna be the next person
- 48:22I would say Zendaya is more closer
- 48:24to Angela Bassett than
- 48:26I would say just because
- 48:28Zendaya's been
- 48:30strictly more
- 48:32stayed in the lane of acting
- 48:34you know same with Angela
- 48:36Bassett that's legendary
- 48:38actresses
- 48:40whereas Tiana is
- 48:42becoming
- 48:44Tiana's become her own sort of iconic
- 48:46things where she can literally do her own
- 48:48type of thing now I mean
- 48:50like Zendaya could probably go out
- 48:52and sing or whatever put something like
- 48:54that but everybody's always gonna put them in
- 48:56this category of movie
- 48:58star a list of territory
- 49:00type of thing we also
- 49:02need to see more from Tiana too
- 49:04right we need to see more roles
- 49:06like more yeah a little bit more
- 49:08to see what she can bring
- 49:10yeah
- 49:12and talk about
- 49:14not just roles but being
- 49:16because if you're talking about Angela Bassett now you gotta be
- 49:18you can't be no no less than number two
- 49:20on the call sheet
- 49:22and then we're talking about what type of movies are you
- 49:24number one number two on the call sheet
- 49:26for
- 49:28in order to get to that but
- 49:30but like I said I don't even
- 49:32think Tiana needs that man
- 49:34I think she's
- 49:36so
- 49:38set in
- 49:40where she's at right now
- 49:42career wise like I said she could literally
- 49:44take this whole
- 49:46Oscar Academy
- 49:48this all Oscar awards
- 49:50race and
- 49:52literally the sky's the limit to where
- 49:54even if she doesn't
- 49:56not say she doesn't want
- 49:58to but I
- 50:00don't think she's gonna be stuck in
- 50:02having which is a good thing she doesn't have to be
- 50:04stuck in the realm of just she could take all
- 50:06these awards and she could
- 50:08take it to
- 50:10take it to the stage like I said music
- 50:12all this type like
- 50:14her
- 50:16I can't even get the words out about how
- 50:18how far she's about to take herself
- 50:20after this to where I like I said
- 50:22movies is
- 50:24just such a small thing
- 50:26to what she to do after what she
- 50:28after what she's about to do this year
- 50:30well like you said she's multi
- 50:32talented you know and what I love about
- 50:34her mindset is anything that she
- 50:36sets her mind to she does
- 50:38she envisions it she plans
- 50:40she strategizes and look at
- 50:42what she's done I mean
- 50:44she's the entertainer of the year
- 50:46right like this
- 50:48is somebody who can do it all
- 50:50you know what I'd like to see her
- 50:52do is I'd like
- 50:54to see her in a musical
- 50:56I'd like to see something
- 50:58you know I'd like to see something like that
- 51:00where she can sing dance
- 51:02and act in a movie
- 51:04I think that would be fantastic
- 51:06I can see her do a theater
- 51:08I can see her do a theater after this
- 51:10she can do Broadway
- 51:12absolutely
- 51:14she's got the music chops buddy
- 51:16like that's critical to have
- 51:18if you're going to do some musicals
- 51:20I think she would be fantastic in that
- 51:22I'd like to see some different
- 51:24things you know because we see
- 51:26this hard side of
- 51:28Tiana right like in this
- 51:30role the specific role it's
- 51:32like that badass type
- 51:34but would you like to see
- 51:36her in something else where
- 51:38she can kind of you know
- 51:40I wonder what she's thinking
- 51:42in terms of her acting career
- 51:44do you think she's
- 51:46going to want to go to theater
- 51:48do more concerts does she just
- 51:50want to do it all
- 51:52I think as far as like well how you said
- 51:54like with her character being so tough
- 51:56and stuff like that I think you get a lot of the
- 51:58softer side of Tiana if you listen to her
- 52:00music you'll get a lot of that
- 52:02softer
- 52:04side to her
- 52:06as far as like but with her character
- 52:08her
- 52:10character had a very
- 52:12small
- 52:14little screen time that she had
- 52:16her character had a pretty big
- 52:18arc
- 52:20absolutely
- 52:22from just
- 52:24how you say looking like she
- 52:26was a badass to
- 52:28almost when you look at her she like
- 52:30almost think that she's just this
- 52:32over sexualized person you
- 52:34know but that is she's not necessarily
- 52:36an over sexualized person
- 52:38she just realizes that the world looks at her
- 52:40that way so
- 52:42she's going to use it to her advantage
- 52:44and I personally
- 52:46think that she made Sean Penn
- 52:48better you know they talk about
- 52:50an acting where you're only
- 52:52as good as your scene partner
- 52:54and they played well off
- 52:56of each other Leo played
- 52:58really well off Tiana and
- 53:00let me ask you this do you think
- 53:02that
- 53:04the casting alone helped
- 53:06make her be better
- 53:08do you think that it helped
- 53:10elevate her this experience
- 53:12or do you think that she already
- 53:14came into this
- 53:16at that high level
- 53:20I think she came into
- 53:22it with the
- 53:24the potential
- 53:26I think that anytime you put yourself
- 53:28in a movie with like a Leonardo DiCaprio
- 53:30Benicio del Toro
- 53:32Thomas Anderson, Regina Hall
- 53:34even Wood Harris
- 53:36when you put yourself in
- 53:38those
- 53:40around those types of people
- 53:42you can't help but to be a sponge
- 53:44so I can't say that like
- 53:46I would find it hard to believe
- 53:48that she was on that film set
- 53:50or in the table
- 53:52reads or any sort of like
- 53:54even just the audition process
- 53:56the multiple auditions or whatever it may be
- 53:58I find it hard to believe
- 54:00that she wasn't able to
- 54:02take something away from
- 54:04just
- 54:06being around all these different
- 54:08actors and actresses
- 54:10and all these different types of artists
- 54:12so I think it's kind of like got to be
- 54:14a good mix of the both
- 54:16just her
- 54:18already having it in her
- 54:20but then being around the right people
- 54:22to kind of bring it out of her
- 54:24because I know
- 54:26she had just did a TV show
- 54:28with Kim Kardashian
- 54:30and I'm like Kim Kardashian ain't going to get that out of you
- 54:34That's what I'm trying to say buddy
- 54:36I felt like this put her
- 54:38on another level
- 54:40and I felt like you say she came in
- 54:42with this level of potential
- 54:44because we didn't really know what her potential
- 54:46could be and now that we see
- 54:48Oscar
- 54:50nominee
- 54:52Tiana Taylor
- 54:54we're thinking about her in a different light now
- 54:56we're thinking about her
- 54:58like if I'm a casting director buddy
- 55:00I'm going to start thinking
- 55:02what scripts do I have around here
- 55:04that maybe I could get Tiana
- 55:06in right now
- 55:08because she's got a major following doesn't she
- 55:10I mean she's
- 55:12very well known
- 55:14and so now you put her in an Oscar
- 55:16nominated film
- 55:18with these Oscar nominated actors
- 55:20it's just going to level
- 55:22you up
- 55:24but she came into it
- 55:26having done the work
- 55:28she came in prepared
- 55:30I saw her on set
- 55:32she's very serious
- 55:34buddy with how she carries
- 55:36herself on set
- 55:38she's very professional
- 55:40laser laser
- 55:42focused buddy on set
- 55:44when she was playing with
- 55:46I got to see her act
- 55:48with Leo and
- 55:50when they were doing their scene
- 55:52it was incredible
- 55:54to witness that
- 55:56that was so much fun
- 55:58to get to watch that
- 56:00it didn't end up in the movie
- 56:02but it should have been
- 56:04it should have been in the movie
- 56:06because I think
- 56:08they cut a lot of her scenes out
- 56:10buddy because you talk
- 56:12about screen time
- 56:14and I can say that there were
- 56:16some scenes that she was in
- 56:18that were cut
- 56:20I think they cut a lot of stuff out of that movie
- 56:22I feel like that movie was probably going to be close to
- 56:243 hours if they left
- 56:26everything in there
- 56:28but they had to cut it down
- 56:30they cut out a lot
- 56:32but it still didn't feel like it was missing anything
- 56:34they were still able to
- 56:36basically
- 56:38capture every dynamic
- 56:40of her relationship with Sean Penn
- 56:42Leonardo DiCaprio with the rest of the
- 56:44mercenaries
- 56:46so
- 56:48that's
- 56:50going to be the tough thing when it comes down
- 56:52to who they choose to win because
- 56:54with Tiana
- 56:56performance wise
- 56:58you can see why she
- 57:00was the front runner from the very start
- 57:02of the get go but now
- 57:04it's coming down to the nitty gritty
- 57:06of who
- 57:08you think should win or
- 57:10who we think will win
- 57:12so I said I feel like she
- 57:14the only thing that's going against
- 57:16her right now is just the fact that she has
- 57:18so little screen time now the screen time that
- 57:20she is in she's killing it
- 57:22you know but it's almost all like
- 57:24it's like that feeling
- 57:26like damn Levi you wanted more kind of shit
- 57:28well I
- 57:30felt that way about Heath Ledger's
- 57:32performance in Batman
- 57:34you know with the Joker he didn't
- 57:36have a lot of screen time either
- 57:38in that Dark Knight movie
- 57:40but he still took
- 57:42it down and still gave a memorable
- 57:44performance so I'd like
- 57:46to think with
- 57:48a role like Tiana's role
- 57:50mentioning about
- 57:52screen time I'm hoping they don't
- 57:54take that into consideration
- 57:56I hope they just clean slate it
- 57:58who did the best right like
- 58:00let's take that out of the equation
- 58:02I think would be the better thing to do
- 58:04because you don't have any control
- 58:06over that but I did
- 58:08like what you said I like what you said
- 58:10about
- 58:12who gave the biggest
- 58:14impact in
- 58:16the movie
- 58:18it's like what
- 58:20character
- 58:22supported the film the most
- 58:24and who had the biggest
- 58:26impact I'd like to ask you that
- 58:28question out of these five
- 58:30actresses who do you
- 58:32think made the biggest
- 58:34impact
- 58:36the biggest
- 58:38impact out of the actresses I would
- 58:40have to say probably
- 58:42Amy Madigan even though I didn't see
- 58:44weapons
- 58:46the movie revolves
- 58:48around her
- 58:50you know or her character at least
- 58:52um
- 58:54so I'd have to
- 58:56say probably I'd have to probably say
- 58:58Amy Madigan I would probably say the two actresses
- 59:00from Sentimental Value probably like
- 59:02towards it are probably towards the bottom of my
- 59:04list correct when it
- 59:06comes when it comes to Wunmi and
- 59:08Tiana it's more so
- 59:10just a toss up as far as
- 59:12what movie
- 59:14you favored
- 59:16okay more so
- 59:18um
- 59:20I would yeah
- 59:22yeah just because I said
- 59:24you talk about weapons I mean
- 59:26Amy Madigan was the weapon you know
- 59:28she was the person well she was the person that was
- 59:30controlling the weapons so correct
- 59:32uh
- 59:34and that's where that's I said that's where it kind of
- 59:36gets tricky you know it's all like what
- 59:38are these voters going to lean towards
- 59:40if they're going to lean towards the
- 59:42the fan frame of the person that's
- 59:44been competing since the beginning but then you kind
- 59:46that's what I want to see about Tiana Dabba like
- 59:48with this being her first
- 59:50experience being in the
- 59:52awards race you know awards
- 59:54season
- 59:56um she had a lot
- 59:58of momentum going in but and now
- 1:00:00when I say Tiana I'm not talking about Tiana the person
- 1:00:02I'm talking about Tiana like her team
- 1:00:04of people that represent her
- 1:00:06did they kind of go in
- 1:00:08um overestimating what it
- 1:00:10meant to actually campaign
- 1:00:12for an Oscar
- 1:00:14because you even kind of see that with Timothy
- 1:00:16Chalamet and we're not going to get into that too much
- 1:00:18but you even see what Timothy Chalamet kind of
- 1:00:20um
- 1:00:22backpedaling so much on the
- 1:00:24you know being so president
- 1:00:26being trying to be everywhere
- 1:00:28I wonder if that's
- 1:00:30kind of the same thing with Tiana's team
- 1:00:32I think it's all about
- 1:00:34momentum buddy and let
- 1:00:36let's ask this question now who's
- 1:00:38got the momentum right now
- 1:00:40who do you think
- 1:00:42has got it right now
- 1:00:44to win because the Oscars
- 1:00:46are coming up real soon
- 1:00:48and the momentum I think
- 1:00:50is on somebody
- 1:00:52right now that I think
- 1:00:54it's it's right here
- 1:00:56if you're talking about momentum
- 1:00:58if you're talking about momentum then momentum
- 1:01:00based off of the last awards
- 1:01:02so then you would lead
- 1:01:04towards Amy Madigan but then
- 1:01:06you look at just a week before that
- 1:01:08after BAFTAs which is you know
- 1:01:10the British version of the
- 1:01:12Oscars
- 1:01:14um Wunmi won
- 1:01:16so if you're looking at the you know
- 1:01:18the foreign Oscars
- 1:01:20Wunmi has the advantage because
- 1:01:22I'm imagining that what their
- 1:01:24criteria is for
- 1:01:26you know award winning performances
- 1:01:28would be more in line with
- 1:01:30what the Academy's
- 1:01:32is whereas what the
- 1:01:34the Actors Awards I said it's
- 1:01:36just it's the actors that are
- 1:01:38voting you know so
- 1:01:40well let's let's ask
- 1:01:42this one more time because do you
- 1:01:44think Tiana's got a fighting chance
- 1:01:46now because you got Wunmi
- 1:01:48and you got Amy oh yeah she's got
- 1:01:50a fighting chance right now to win
- 1:01:52yeah Tiana yeah
- 1:01:54I still think she has a fighting chance I
- 1:01:56think that
- 1:01:58I think that like I said I think
- 1:02:00Amy Madigan has a lot of momentum going into it
- 1:02:02I could see why
- 1:02:04if she were to win why
- 1:02:06she would win but I'm
- 1:02:08still going with for as far
- 1:02:10as like for who my my choices are
- 1:02:12my choice is still
- 1:02:14Tiana being the front runner I still got Tiana
- 1:02:16winning the Oscar
- 1:02:18if not then I have Wunmi
- 1:02:20Wunmi
- 1:02:22being um
- 1:02:24second then Amy
- 1:02:26for third and then the
- 1:02:28two actresses for sentimental value
- 1:02:30but yeah I still got Tiana
- 1:02:32Tiana's still my front runner for winning
- 1:02:34the Oscar I still think that she's
- 1:02:36she's going to um
- 1:02:38um win it because I said
- 1:02:40it's now it's coming down to studios
- 1:02:42how much you know they're putting
- 1:02:44forth with it and because it's this is
- 1:02:46all under Warner Brothers
- 1:02:48and Warner Brothers
- 1:02:50had this plan from the beginning from the
- 1:02:52get-go this will be all
- 1:02:54about Paul Thomas Anderson it's all going to
- 1:02:56be about Tiana Taylor I
- 1:02:58really don't see them
- 1:03:00letting their foot off the gas
- 1:03:02just because Amy
- 1:03:04Madigan won the best supporting actress
- 1:03:06at the the Actors Awards I still
- 1:03:08think that they're
- 1:03:10still gung-ho
- 1:03:12on doing whatever they
- 1:03:14can for Tiana to win the Oscar if
- 1:03:16Tiana's not going to win it then I think it's
- 1:03:18going to be Wunmi
- 1:03:20well right now for me
- 1:03:22buddy I think
- 1:03:24Amy Madigan is the front runner
- 1:03:26I think Wunmi's right
- 1:03:28on her tail could easily
- 1:03:30win Wunmi right now
- 1:03:32for me
- 1:03:34I think Tiana's
- 1:03:36lost some momentum
- 1:03:38and you know
- 1:03:40it's not to take away I don't think she's
- 1:03:42eliminated I think she's still contender
- 1:03:44but I think
- 1:03:46I've got Tiana third
- 1:03:48now so again
- 1:03:50Amy one
- 1:03:52Wunmi two
- 1:03:54Tiana three
- 1:03:56I put Inga
- 1:03:58four and Elle five
- 1:04:00so
- 1:04:02for me
- 1:04:04it comes down to the
- 1:04:06momentum factor
- 1:04:08also I wonder
- 1:04:10if they're going to weigh in the fact that
- 1:04:12Amy has had
- 1:04:14a 40 plus year career
- 1:04:16and this is the first time
- 1:04:18we've seen in 40 years
- 1:04:20another nomination
- 1:04:22and her role was so
- 1:04:24iconic where
- 1:04:26like I said earlier
- 1:04:28you know
- 1:04:30she's a new Halloween costume
- 1:04:34so
- 1:04:36man this is so
- 1:04:38tough but those are my choices
- 1:04:40um
- 1:04:42it's so hard
- 1:04:44for me to choose because
- 1:04:46Wunmi and Tiana gave
- 1:04:48phenomenal all these actresses
- 1:04:50gave phenomenal performances
- 1:04:52and that's what makes this decision
- 1:04:54so tough and I would
- 1:04:56hate to be the one to have to make that
- 1:04:58decision
- 1:05:00that and like
- 1:05:02I said I still believe that the Academy Awards
- 1:05:04they still don't truly recognize horror
- 1:05:06as like
- 1:05:08um
- 1:05:10like a
- 1:05:12legit award
- 1:05:14winning genre you know what I mean
- 1:05:16so this is what makes
- 1:05:18Sinner so cool
- 1:05:20I think that also because
- 1:05:22Sinner plays as more than just a horror
- 1:05:24movie you know what I'm saying the
- 1:05:26cultural impact that Sinner has
- 1:05:28kind of
- 1:05:30gives it that sort of leverage
- 1:05:32but yeah I still
- 1:05:34yeah
- 1:05:36as good as the performances Amy Madigan
- 1:05:38has done I believe that she did do a good performance
- 1:05:40like I said I didn't see Sinner but I've seen
- 1:05:42bits of her performance
- 1:05:44yeah I still gotta lean
- 1:05:46towards Tiana just because
- 1:05:48I
- 1:05:50like I said everyone
- 1:05:52is deserving of a performance but if we're talking about
- 1:05:54campaigning and all that stuff
- 1:05:56and I think that
- 1:05:58she
- 1:06:00she's had that momentum since the beginning
- 1:06:02and then also
- 1:06:04um
- 1:06:06I forgot what my second point was
- 1:06:08but whatever it may be
- 1:06:10but like I said yeah I think she has that
- 1:06:12and um
- 1:06:14it's interesting to see
- 1:06:16it'll be interesting to see because
- 1:06:18I don't believe there's momentum
- 1:06:20I just don't believe there's no momentum going into this
- 1:06:22to this final
- 1:06:24this final week
- 1:06:26you know what I'm saying or this final
- 1:06:28too many people have won
- 1:06:30the award for there to really be any sort
- 1:06:32of true momentum
- 1:06:34going into it
- 1:06:36you know for me though buddy
- 1:06:38what I've always been wondering
- 1:06:40is
- 1:06:42certain actors who have won
- 1:06:44Golden Globes
- 1:06:46like I'm gonna just mention Jim Carrey
- 1:06:48because he's been in the news about
- 1:06:50like being cloned and all this
- 1:06:52Jim Carrey comes to mind because he's
- 1:06:54won two Golden Globes
- 1:06:56and he's never been nominated for an Oscar
- 1:06:58when he
- 1:07:00was worthy he was worthy of being
- 1:07:02nominated once
- 1:07:04and so for me I
- 1:07:06wonder if they still
- 1:07:08feel that way if you win the Golden
- 1:07:10Globe if you're worthy of winning
- 1:07:12the Oscar
- 1:07:14nowadays because Tiana
- 1:07:16took down a nod for
- 1:07:18an Oscar
- 1:07:20and she won the Golden
- 1:07:22Globe is why I bring that up so
- 1:07:24like you say
- 1:07:26does that momentum
- 1:07:28of winning the Golden Globe carry
- 1:07:30all the way to the
- 1:07:32Oscars
- 1:07:34I think if done right
- 1:07:36yes which is why I kind of
- 1:07:38went back to my point at the beginning of the day that
- 1:07:40her Tiana's team
- 1:07:42probably didn't understand
- 1:07:44what
- 1:07:46all went into campaigning
- 1:07:48throughout the whole entire
- 1:07:50award season
- 1:07:52because when you see especially with the Golden Globes
- 1:07:54coming around and all the nominations started
- 1:07:56I think she was even hosted SNL
- 1:07:58and all these types of things
- 1:08:00everywhere and I think that's where
- 1:08:02if we say the steam kind of
- 1:08:04lost out
- 1:08:06towards the end of the awards season
- 1:08:08but if you just look at what she was able to
- 1:08:10capture
- 1:08:12for that little bit of lightning
- 1:08:14in the bottle
- 1:08:20I also think though the
- 1:08:22success of Sinners
- 1:08:24though has also leveled up
- 1:08:26Wunmi too because you're talking
- 1:08:28about Sinners that
- 1:08:30has outperformed
- 1:08:32one battle after another so
- 1:08:34far right like in terms
- 1:08:36of awards and so
- 1:08:38now we're really looking at
- 1:08:40Wunmi now whereas before
- 1:08:42maybe I wouldn't have looked at
- 1:08:44her if Sinners
- 1:08:46wasn't nominated for 16
- 1:08:48Oscars
- 1:08:50and that's where I think
- 1:08:52nominations
- 1:08:54that's where I think they become
- 1:08:56that's where I think it's just
- 1:08:58it's almost
- 1:09:02going to hurt Wunmi
- 1:09:04and even these other
- 1:09:06nominees as well just because
- 1:09:08I don't want to say there's necessarily an afterthought
- 1:09:10but it wasn't
- 1:09:12until
- 1:09:14Sinners
- 1:09:16became the big old
- 1:09:18cultural phenomenon that it was
- 1:09:20that people
- 1:09:22made people
- 1:09:24look at it different
- 1:09:26I think that with
- 1:09:28one battle after another I think
- 1:09:30one of the things that even going into
- 1:09:32marketing and promoting one battle
- 1:09:34after another was the fact that people were saying
- 1:09:36that this was Tiana's Oscar
- 1:09:38performance
- 1:09:40so even just the fact that
- 1:09:42the part of the marketing strategy
- 1:09:44towards one battle
- 1:09:46after another was
- 1:09:48Tiana winning this Oscar
- 1:09:50PTA winning the Oscar whereas
- 1:09:52Wunmi
- 1:09:54she's almost like
- 1:09:56I don't
- 1:09:58want to say byproducts I think that might sound
- 1:10:00wrong but
- 1:10:02that's what I can use for right now just a byproduct
- 1:10:04of the cultural phenomenon
- 1:10:06that was
- 1:10:08Sinners
- 1:10:10It was such an ensemble
- 1:10:12piece though too buddy because
- 1:10:14it's so hard to
- 1:10:16it's so hard to
- 1:10:18look at the
- 1:10:20when you strip away all these other
- 1:10:22performances and like when you
- 1:10:24look at these performances individually
- 1:10:26every single performance stands out
- 1:10:28but
- 1:10:30they tie
- 1:10:32in so seamlessly together when you put
- 1:10:34them all together that it is
- 1:10:36it's almost like they don't stand out
- 1:10:38you know what I'm saying
- 1:10:40Right
- 1:10:42So
- 1:10:44yeah I don't know
- 1:10:46it's a toss up
- 1:10:48It's a toss up but
- 1:10:50it sounds like you're
- 1:10:52team
- 1:10:54Tiana and I guess
- 1:10:56I'm team Amy even though I'm
- 1:10:58rooting for Tiana
- 1:11:00or Wunmi
- 1:11:02I want
- 1:11:04yeah this is so hard
- 1:11:06because
- 1:11:08yeah I just can't decide
- 1:11:10but for me I guess
- 1:11:12I gotta give it to Amy just because
- 1:11:14her role was so iconic
- 1:11:16and something that I'm never gonna
- 1:11:18forget literally
- 1:11:22But no this is gonna be a good awards race
