Latest / Foul Territory / Players push back against online trolls + Pete Fairbanks joins FT
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: All right, what's the beeper? We're gonna take a different
- 0:05Speaker 1: turn on this.
- 0:05Speaker 2: We've covered the story a few times over the last
- 0:07Speaker 2: few years during our show's existence. It's online trolls against
- 0:12Speaker 2: players and when they cross the line. You know, it's
- 0:14Speaker 2: one thing to tweet at someone and say you stink.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's another thing to be threatening their lives or their families' lives.
- 0:20Speaker 2: So a lot of that has popped up, you know,
- 0:23Speaker 2: over the years. It seems to be getting more aggressive
- 0:26Speaker 2: and KP. It seems as if current players are more
- 0:30Speaker 2: aggressive with addressing it and publicizing it.
- 0:34Speaker 1: There's not that much they can do.
- 0:35Speaker 2: You can occasionally get security, and that stuff has happened
- 0:38Speaker 2: in the past. But you know, we'll talk about Matt Chapman,
- 0:41Speaker 2: Mookie Batts, Tanner Scott and others who either themselves or
- 0:46Speaker 2: through family has made a public that you know, they're
- 0:48Speaker 2: getting attacked online.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We'll start with Chapman here.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Susan Slusser covers this in the latest Splashit Territory to
- 0:56Speaker 2: check Out, but she also wrote about it, of course
- 0:58Speaker 2: in the San Francisco Chronicle and exclusive on the team's
- 1:02Speaker 2: third Basement and during a very poor start to the
- 1:05Speaker 2: season and how fans have come after him. You know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: one of the quotes in there people saying I hope
- 1:10Speaker 2: your family dies.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So there's a lot of that going on. KP.
- 1:14Speaker 2: You know, Tanner Scott his wife sharing a message and
- 1:18Speaker 2: she kind of was like, Hey, I never put anything
- 1:20Speaker 2: out there, but I'm just going to show some screenshots
- 1:22Speaker 2: here of what we deal with, you know again, like
- 1:25Speaker 2: basically death threats to the players and to the family members.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So my question to you, of course, I get your
- 1:31Speaker 2: take over all, but also it's like, is there anything
- 1:34Speaker 2: that we can do here? I mean, you feel like,
- 1:35Speaker 2: in the way we operate from a tech perspective nowadays,
- 1:38Speaker 2: that you should put our best people on here and
- 1:40Speaker 2: start start finding out who the heck's doing this.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I agree with that, but I think
- 1:46Speaker 3: it starts with the players doing exactly what they're doing.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Them coming out and doing this is not saying that
- 1:51Speaker 3: they're weak or that they can't or they shouldn't or
- 1:54Speaker 3: can't handle it. But the only way to bring awareness
- 1:57Speaker 3: to what the players go through behind closed doors is
- 2:00Speaker 3: to keep publicizing this. And I'm a listener to your guys'
- 2:04Speaker 3: show when I'm not on, and I think it was,
- 2:06Speaker 3: you know, a week ago or two weeks ago. You know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: Cracks reminded, you know, the listeners that fans stands for fanatic,
- 2:12Speaker 3: and sometimes they cross the line into being too much
- 2:16Speaker 3: of a fanatic with things going on.
- 2:18Speaker 4: And I do believe betting and baseball has changed.
- 2:20Speaker 3: It a little bit too, where there's dollars and cents
- 2:23Speaker 3: on the line and people are betting on players or
- 2:25Speaker 3: props or games and stuff, and when the players don't perform,
- 2:28Speaker 3: they take it very personally. But it's something we've all
- 2:32Speaker 3: dealt with in our career and it's gotten worse obviously
- 2:36Speaker 3: because of social media being so prominent and the ability
- 2:39Speaker 3: to not only access us, but our loved ones, our families,
- 2:43Speaker 3: our parents, our brothers, our friends. Right like, it's happening
- 2:46Speaker 3: to a lot of people across the game. So players
- 2:48Speaker 3: need to continue to speak up. Major League Baseball at
- 2:51Speaker 3: some point or the players Association or in conjunction, need
- 2:55Speaker 3: to figure out a way where we have people that
- 2:58Speaker 3: can go on social media police this, figure out where
- 3:00Speaker 3: these people are, you know, delete their accounts, do not
- 3:03Speaker 3: give them access to the stadium. It's a really sad
- 3:06Speaker 3: role we live in where us as players were human beings.
- 3:10Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:10Speaker 3: That's the fun thing that, you know, guys like me
- 3:12Speaker 3: and Todd in our post career, we get to come
- 3:14Speaker 3: on a show like this and just show that we're
- 3:16Speaker 3: just normal people that worked really hard, maybe had a skill.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Set that allowed us an opportunity to play in the
- 3:22Speaker 4: major leagues. But we're human beings. We have feelings. We care.
- 3:25Speaker 4: No player wants to.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Go out there and suck and not perform, but to
- 3:30Speaker 3: take it to a point where you're telling someone's wife
- 3:33Speaker 3: to go shoot themselves or you're telling someone I hope
- 3:36Speaker 3: your family dies over a game. At the end of
- 3:38Speaker 3: the day, it's a game. Yes, we are going out
- 3:40Speaker 3: there and we are trying to win. That is our
- 3:42Speaker 3: job is to try to win and perform. But at
- 3:44Speaker 3: the end of the day, it's a game. We are entertainment.
- 3:46Speaker 3: We are no different than the movie theater you try
- 3:49Speaker 3: to go to or the concert that you go to. Yes,
- 3:52Speaker 3: we care, but it should never get to that level.
- 3:56Speaker 5: No, definitely not. You know, and I can only think
- 3:59Speaker 5: back to when I played. I had a death threat
- 4:02Speaker 5: to as well one year and I'm sitting there like,
- 4:04Speaker 5: oh my god, me, what did I do at the
- 4:07Speaker 5: end of the day and you think about it, and
- 4:09Speaker 5: now you got to explain to your family, You got
- 4:11Speaker 5: to tell your you know, your family at home. Beware,
- 4:15Speaker 5: I just got this sent to me. The security is
- 4:18Speaker 5: going to hopefully take care of it, but it's on
- 4:19Speaker 5: your mind. You know, we've all been through it all.
- 4:22Speaker 5: I think it's one of the scariest things to read.
- 4:26Speaker 5: You know, you're you read it and you don't believe
- 4:28Speaker 5: it's there. Over a game of baseball. I don't remember
- 4:32Speaker 5: exactly what I did. It probably wasn't a good game.
- 4:34Speaker 5: I probably didn't help this person win a bet or
- 4:36Speaker 5: whatever or they're a big fan. But to have it done,
- 4:40Speaker 5: you know, you think about it a lot, even you know,
- 4:43Speaker 5: when you're just sitting in bed and mo man, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 5: like what happens if that person ends up, you know,
- 4:47Speaker 5: remembering and doing something else, so it never you never
- 4:50Speaker 5: forget it, but you'll never know who it really is.
- 4:54Speaker 6: You know. Luckily they found out.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Where the person was located, and you know, I don't
- 4:58Speaker 5: know what else happened after that, but still it's uh,
- 5:01Speaker 5: it's surreal and you hate to see this from some people.
- 5:05Speaker 5: It's disgusting. Its disturbing behavior. But you know, I hope,
- 5:08Speaker 5: I hope they're doing okay over there, because this isn't it.
- 5:12Speaker 5: This isn't it at all.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think I think there's limits too that
- 5:16Speaker 3: it's okay to be upset. And you could tell me
- 5:18Speaker 3: that I suck, and then you could tell me that
- 5:19Speaker 3: I hope I get traded or dfaid or lose all
- 5:22Speaker 3: my money. But there's certain thresholds you cannot cross. And
- 5:27Speaker 3: you know, there's certain people out there that make these
- 5:30Speaker 3: threats against players, and they're probably very upset in the moment, right,
- 5:33Speaker 3: And we don't know as human beings and athletes if
- 5:37Speaker 3: these threats are real. And then you have to be
- 5:40Speaker 3: concerned about your family safety, your safety. You know, a
- 5:43Speaker 3: lot of times we're on the road and our family
- 5:46Speaker 3: may be back at home, whether it's in our city
- 5:48Speaker 3: that we're living in at the time or at home
- 5:50Speaker 3: home where we make our off season home. Right, And
- 5:53Speaker 3: there's that's not the best way to probably get performance
- 5:56Speaker 3: out of a player who may be struggling physically or
- 5:59Speaker 3: mentally on the field. Now you add this extra layer
- 6:02Speaker 3: of having to worry about the safety of his wife
- 6:04Speaker 3: and his kids back home, Like I.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Just don't know where we've gone wrong.
- 6:09Speaker 3: As a society where someone would feel that it's okay
- 6:12Speaker 3: to make a threat on someone's life over a game.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Over a game, like it's not a joke. Whether it's
- 6:18Speaker 3: in the heat of the moment and you're writing something
- 6:20Speaker 3: and you don't mean it, we don't know if you
- 6:22Speaker 3: mean it, our family doesn't know. Then we have to
- 6:25Speaker 3: go out and make sure that our family is protected.
- 6:27Speaker 3: We have to you know, either call local authorities, police.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Luckily we have you know, URSA and security that works
- 6:34Speaker 3: it within our organization and our franchises and our teams. Right,
- 6:38Speaker 3: but I just don't know where we've gone wrong as
- 6:41Speaker 3: human beings first in society.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's bad, you know, And I mean there's often
- 6:48Speaker 2: no repercussions. That's part of the problem too, right, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 2: bad actors are going to be there's no punishment, So
- 6:54Speaker 2: maybe that has to be looked at more deeply, you know.
- 6:58Speaker 4: And there was there was a point in time.
- 7:00Speaker 3: There was a point in time where like, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 3: if you were mentally struggling with something, it was kind
- 7:04Speaker 3: of taboo to talk about. You know, you're struggling, and
- 7:06Speaker 3: the mental health part of life has become way more acceptable,
- 7:10Speaker 3: especially in sports now. So I think the best thing
- 7:13Speaker 3: players could do and players' wives can do is continually
- 7:16Speaker 3: post these things, share these things, because I think if
- 7:19Speaker 3: we get to a point where players and players' spouses
- 7:22Speaker 3: and wives and kids and family members are comfortable sharing
- 7:25Speaker 3: these things, it becomes a much bigger thing and then
- 7:28Speaker 3: hopefully we could find a solution to it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Mm hmm yeah, more policing of it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I know that's not easy, and I'm just throwing that
- 7:37Speaker 2: out there, and you know it takes sometimes some really
- 7:39Speaker 2: good investigators and tech to be able to find that.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Stuff, but that is the way.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I mean, it is illegal to threaten someone's life, period,
- 7:47Speaker 2: that's a law. So if that's being done and they
- 7:51Speaker 2: can find who's doing great. I know there's many ways
- 7:53Speaker 2: to try and you know, avoid being caught or people
- 7:56Speaker 2: seeing your account, but that's really what should happen, Todd Father.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I mean, I think players should keep publicizing this so
- 8:03Speaker 2: that it gets the attention of legislators and they could
- 8:06Speaker 2: be like, hey, are we doing everything we should be
- 8:08Speaker 2: to protect these guys?
- 8:09Speaker 1: Right?
- 8:10Speaker 5: Yeah, that's why you have security everywhere you go on
- 8:13Speaker 5: the road. Hopefully they're on queue read ready to pounce
- 8:17Speaker 5: at any med it in case something really does happen,
- 8:21Speaker 5: because every once in a while, there's always something in
- 8:23Speaker 5: the news that you know, getting off a bus, going
- 8:25Speaker 5: in a hotel, there's it's uh, it's it's scary sometimes
- 8:29Speaker 5: for sure for some of these guys.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You guys dealt with some weird stuff.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I'm sure, even aside from the threats too, right where
- 8:35Speaker 2: every once in a while, so hey, we're bringing up outliers.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Ninety nine percent of the time, you guys have great
- 8:41Speaker 2: interactions with fans, yeah, but every once in a while
- 8:44Speaker 2: there's something weird.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean for me.
- 8:47Speaker 3: For me, like going into a hostile environment was always interesting, right,
- 8:51Speaker 3: Like you know what was gonna come, Like when you
- 8:53Speaker 3: went to places like Philadelphia, when you went to places
- 8:55Speaker 3: like New York, you knew you were going to hear
- 8:57Speaker 3: it from the people, especially in the outfield. You know
- 8:59Speaker 3: they were going to say everything under the moon at you.
- 9:03Speaker 3: But you know, the the Internet has really changed things
- 9:07Speaker 3: right now, Like as much as I want to keep
- 9:08Speaker 3: my family life private, like it's not hard to figure
- 9:12Speaker 3: out my wife's name, my kid's name, and then when
- 9:15Speaker 3: people start using those things against you, it's like Okay,
- 9:19Speaker 3: we've crossed the line now, like say anything you want
- 9:21Speaker 3: about me as a human being, as a person, but
- 9:24Speaker 3: when you start getting your families involved. And I remember, man,
- 9:28Speaker 3: it was probably twoenty fourteen, maybe fifteen. I was still
- 9:31Speaker 3: really young in the game, and I remember I was
- 9:34Speaker 3: in Houston, and you know, someone was like chirping at me,
- 9:38Speaker 3: like very aggressively, to the point where like I had
- 9:40Speaker 3: never really experienced it before, and they had crossed the
- 9:42Speaker 3: line into like my family, my.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Wife and stuff.
- 9:45Speaker 3: And I remember coming into the dugout and telling Mark Burley,
- 9:49Speaker 3: and I was kind of like scared to tell him,
- 9:51Speaker 3: right because I didn't know how he was going to react,
- 9:53Speaker 3: a veteran who's probably been through the ringer before. And
- 9:56Speaker 3: he just like kindly asked me. He's like, who's doing it?
- 9:59Speaker 3: And I I was like, it's these guys up like
- 10:01Speaker 3: in left center field, right, and he's like, I'll take
- 10:03Speaker 3: care of it. Went back out in the outfield the
- 10:05Speaker 3: next inning and security was up there and removed the guys.
- 10:08Speaker 4: From the game.
- 10:08Speaker 3: So I always remember that and remember feeling more comfortable
- 10:12Speaker 3: about kind of speaking up and telling an older guy
- 10:15Speaker 3: and like I said, it wasn't me like being weak,
- 10:17Speaker 3: but I just felt like they had crossed the line,
- 10:19Speaker 3: and you know, rightfully, uh you know Minimate Park at
- 10:22Speaker 3: the time, their security did a great job of removing.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Them from the game. And I think that's all you
- 10:26Speaker 4: can do as a player.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good story, right, You just you got
- 10:31Speaker 2: to speak up. Sometimes you can't, right, but.
- 10:36Speaker 3: You have to speak up in a way of telling
- 10:38Speaker 3: you know, your security, you're you know, a veteran player
- 10:41Speaker 3: like that, because God knows what happens if someone's chirping
- 10:45Speaker 3: at you and you turn around as a player and
- 10:47Speaker 3: you chirp back, someone catches on video you're looking at like,
- 10:50Speaker 3: you know, suspensions and repercussions and fines and all these
- 10:54Speaker 3: sort of discipline area actions. You know, you get held
- 10:57Speaker 3: to a higher standard as a player for some reason,
- 11:00Speaker 3: right when you're the player in the field and people
- 11:03Speaker 3: just feel like they could say whatever they want to
- 11:05Speaker 3: you with no repercussions.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Hey, for a second, we let a couple guys get
- 11:12Speaker 2: away with trying to assault a player, and then that
- 11:16Speaker 2: was corrected. But I think that actually required people publicizing
- 11:21Speaker 2: how bad it was because some guys were getting you know,
- 11:24Speaker 2: some people were promoting that You guys know what I'm
- 11:26Speaker 2: talking about, right, Mookie bets play from a couple of
- 11:29Speaker 2: years ago in the World Series at Yankee Stadium. Like
- 11:32Speaker 2: I remember talking about that and it was a hot
- 11:34Speaker 2: button topic. But eventually most saying people are like, wait,
- 11:37Speaker 2: two dudes grabbed a guy's arm tried to keep him suspended,
- 11:40Speaker 2: like that, what are we doing? That person should never
- 11:43Speaker 2: be allowed in a ballpark again at the minimum, Yeah, because.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Maybe they get there, they get their you know, ten
- 11:52Speaker 3: seconds of fame, and they feel like in some way
- 11:54Speaker 3: they were part of the Yankees during that World Series.
- 11:57Speaker 3: They made a play for the team that helped them,
- 11:59Speaker 3: but what they did was not legal. They reached into
- 12:03Speaker 3: the field of play, and then on top of it,
- 12:04Speaker 3: they kind of assaulted the person. And for some reason,
- 12:08Speaker 3: like you said, death threats are illegal, to make assaulting someone,
- 12:12Speaker 3: touching someone without their consent is illegal. Like, we put
- 12:16Speaker 3: ourselves in this stadium and then all of a sudden,
- 12:18Speaker 3: we think we're in this vacuum where rules don't apply.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I think that's the bigger issue is that the same
- 12:23Speaker 3: rules outside of the stadium in real life. If you
- 12:26Speaker 3: went up to someone in a hotel bar and just
- 12:28Speaker 3: grabbed their arm. You could get them arrested. There would
- 12:31Speaker 3: be an assault charge. If you went up to someone
- 12:33Speaker 3: in a restaurant somewhere and said I'm going to kill
- 12:36Speaker 3: you like that person would be arrested and they would
- 12:38Speaker 3: be taking to jail. But all of a sudden, we
- 12:40Speaker 3: get inside of an arena or a stadium and all
- 12:43Speaker 3: the rules of life go out the window. So I
- 12:45Speaker 3: think the more players continue to share these stories, hopefully
- 12:49Speaker 3: it catches on and things change.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I'm with you, good talk, Okay, let's keep it rolling
- 12:55Speaker 2: on this topic now. Like on a somewhat lighter note,
- 12:58Speaker 2: I would say this was a miscommunication from the weekend. So,
- 13:02Speaker 2: Hazu Sanchez is in right field and he's, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 2: got a quick exchange with a fan out there, and
- 13:09Speaker 2: I'll let Jacob Calvin Meyer, who's an Orioles reporter, kind
- 13:12Speaker 2: of lace some more out here. On a tweet, he said,
- 13:14Speaker 2: it appears a fan in the right field bleachers at
- 13:15Speaker 2: Camden Yards threw a ball at Blue Jay's right fielder
- 13:18Speaker 2: Jesu Sanchez and hit him on the wrist.
- 13:20Speaker 1: He was in pain. He left the game.
- 13:22Speaker 2: When explaining to Toronto manager John Schneider what happened, Sanchez
- 13:26Speaker 2: pointed towards the right field stands. Now, there's more to
- 13:29Speaker 2: the story here. It was a young fan, people said,
- 13:32Speaker 2: probably about thirteen years old, flapping his glove, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 2: indicating hey, let's play catch, and that stuff does happen,
- 13:39Speaker 2: and you know, like Sanchez did that, hey like almost
- 13:42Speaker 2: like the you know, oh, maybe.
- 13:43Speaker 1: We'll play catch.
- 13:44Speaker 2: And I think the kid just was like, oh cool,
- 13:46Speaker 2: he wants me to throw him a ball, threw him
- 13:47Speaker 2: a ball, hit him perfect storm where it was like, oops,
- 13:51Speaker 2: you know that was not I guess what you intended
- 13:54Speaker 2: the thing is. I mean, well, you know, KP, you've
- 13:56Speaker 2: been in the outfit. Have you ever done the play
- 13:58Speaker 2: in the catch thing with a fan?
- 14:00Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 14:01Speaker 4: Definitely, definitely yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And you know what, I got to give kudos to
- 14:04Speaker 3: Jesus Sanchez too, because he talked to the media after
- 14:08Speaker 3: the game and said that it was a misunderstanding, right,
- 14:10Speaker 3: and we're gonna kick this thirteen year old kid out
- 14:12Speaker 3: of a game who.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Did something where maybe he was kind of.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Provoked by the player, like he thought it was innocent
- 14:18Speaker 3: that he was they that in fact, the player was
- 14:21Speaker 3: inviting him to play catch.
- 14:23Speaker 4: We're gonna kick that thirteen year old kid out.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Who barely understands the way life works, right, but we're
- 14:28Speaker 3: gonna have these full grown adults just physically and or
- 14:33Speaker 3: verbally assault the player and they hardly ever get kicked out.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And then my last note on that too is we
- 14:39Speaker 3: probably need to find this thirteen year old kid because
- 14:43Speaker 3: Jesus Sanchez had to leave the game because he got
- 14:45Speaker 3: hit in the wrist and he left the game, and
- 14:47Speaker 3: clearly he's got a heck of an arm on him
- 14:49Speaker 3: with pinpoint accuracy too, So you know, there's teams out
- 14:53Speaker 3: there that probably need some bullpen help. And maybe this
- 14:56Speaker 3: kid's the next Henry Rome Gardner, So you know, make
- 15:00Speaker 3: light of a kind of a weird situation that happened.
- 15:03Speaker 3: But he did leave the game, he had to get
- 15:05Speaker 3: X rays. They were negative, thankfully, But like thirteen year
- 15:08Speaker 3: old kid, you know, showing that type of promise and
- 15:10Speaker 3: accuracy and velocity.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Let's find this kid's number. Let's get this kid a tryout.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Sorry I'm laughing, but you never know, it could be
- 15:21Speaker 5: the next big thing. You're right, hey, listen, it kind
- 15:23Speaker 5: of looked like he was looking for it, and then
- 15:25Speaker 5: when the kid didn't throw it, he turned and got
- 15:27Speaker 5: hit big misunderstanding. I know that he talked about that.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Let the kids stay in the game. Man, Come on,
- 15:33Speaker 5: I don't think he meant to do that.
- 15:36Speaker 6: I did it.
- 15:36Speaker 5: I do it before games, like I go out a
- 15:38Speaker 5: half hour for the game stretch. Nobody's even out there,
- 15:41Speaker 5: and I'm like, hey, who wants to I have a ball.
- 15:44Speaker 5: I lob it to somebody. I make sure I know
- 15:46Speaker 5: they're old enough to catch, and sometimes whennot, I try
- 15:49Speaker 5: and throw it a little in front of him just
- 15:51Speaker 5: in case they do miss it. It doesn't hit him
- 15:52Speaker 5: in the chest or head. We have fun with it.
- 15:55Speaker 5: That's fun times. And now this is a memory that
- 15:57Speaker 5: this kid will be haunted with, you know, until somebody you.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Know gives him a little bit of a break.
- 16:03Speaker 5: So hopefully they can figure this out and give this
- 16:06Speaker 5: young man a break.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's a good call.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I bet you he'll be back at a game soon
- 16:10Speaker 2: and they'll, you know, give him the VIP treatment and
- 16:12Speaker 2: be like, misunderstanding on both sides, welcome back, We still
- 16:15Speaker 2: love you.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Good stuff.
- 16:17Speaker 2: All right, We're gonna step aside for a quickie break.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Let's talk fish. Pete Fairbanks from the Marlins joining us
- 16:30Speaker 2: right now. Let's do a phone flip too, give me
- 16:33Speaker 2: a live phone flip.
- 16:34Speaker 7: Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I think that's the one.
- 16:40Speaker 7: It looks like, it looks like.
- 16:42Speaker 1: That is it. You nailed it. You nailed it.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I've been told that you it was perfect. That was
- 16:46Speaker 2: the perfect flip. Sometimes we get the.
- 16:49Speaker 7: Boats and you and I are not necessarily agreeable, but
- 16:51Speaker 7: glad we were able to figure it out.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a nice view of the seats out
- 16:55Speaker 2: there too. So tell me how's life. What's going on
- 16:58Speaker 2: for you lately with the Marlins, this young team that
- 17:00Speaker 2: goes through it's ups and downs.
- 17:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean it's the young team that's going through
- 17:05Speaker 7: ups and downs, you know, I mean, that's part of it,
- 17:08Speaker 7: right It's you know, it's not a perfect world where
- 17:15Speaker 7: everything goes exactly how you want it to, whether it's
- 17:18Speaker 7: on a personal level, whether it's on a macro team level,
- 17:21Speaker 7: it's you know, you have people that are that are
- 17:24Speaker 7: working through it and improving and out here. You know,
- 17:27Speaker 7: I'm watching early work right now, just trying to you know,
- 17:30Speaker 7: improve and hopefully eventually you see everything start to click
- 17:34Speaker 7: and come together. But you know, right now we're kind
- 17:36Speaker 7: of going through it for a couple for a few
- 17:38Speaker 7: days here, and then hopefully we can start writing the ship.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Yeah, speaking of a couple of young players, Juri Perez,
- 17:45Speaker 3: I was watching the game versus Toronto, kind of an
- 17:48Speaker 3: emotional series. I know, there was some back and forth
- 17:50Speaker 3: with some hit by pitches.
- 17:52Speaker 4: He comes off the mound.
- 17:53Speaker 3: After kind of an emotional kind of thing that happened
- 17:55Speaker 3: in the game.
- 17:56Speaker 4: One of the weirdest injuries you've ever.
- 17:58Speaker 7: Seen, Probably the weirdest, at least obviously you get off
- 18:04Speaker 7: field and then you get some really weird ones, but
- 18:06Speaker 7: in terms of a at a game while doing something
- 18:10Speaker 7: baseball related, probably the weirdest I've ever seen, and they
- 18:14Speaker 7: thankfully got it. None of us knew it was going
- 18:16Speaker 7: on down the bullpen. We were able to see that
- 18:19Speaker 7: Twitter video that kind of circulated after the fact, but yeah,
- 18:22Speaker 7: it was a freak thing. Just one of the weirdest
- 18:25Speaker 7: we've ever seen.
- 18:27Speaker 3: What was kind of the panic like down in the
- 18:29Speaker 3: bullpen because he was cruising, I mean, he was dealing,
- 18:31Speaker 3: as a matter of fact, and then the phone rings
- 18:34Speaker 3: and kind of the heart starts.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Beating a little bit. Maybe not you, because you know,
- 18:37Speaker 4: your kind of roll. Later in the game.
- 18:39Speaker 3: But I'm sure you had some teammates down there like
- 18:41Speaker 3: what the hell is going on?
- 18:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't think anybody really, you know, had an
- 18:45Speaker 7: idea of what was what we were working with. And
- 18:48Speaker 7: then you know, you go from being stone poll watching
- 18:50Speaker 7: the guy that's you know, cruising to a maybe a
- 18:55Speaker 7: couple throws and then you got unlimited warm ups on
- 18:57Speaker 7: the field trying to get ready. So obviously that's you know,
- 19:00Speaker 7: something that can kind of put you behind the eight ball,
- 19:03Speaker 7: and it's never something that you're really expecting, especially you
- 19:08Speaker 7: know when you're watching the guy throw forty pitches through
- 19:10Speaker 7: four and punch eight tickets or whatever.
- 19:12Speaker 6: It was, of course crazy.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Another guy, John White, made his debut the other day.
- 19:21Speaker 5: Not the best two innings, five, five runs, four walks,
- 19:24Speaker 5: gave a five hits. Like what are you do in
- 19:26Speaker 5: those situations as a veteran guy. Do you talk to
- 19:29Speaker 5: him and explain to them you know, better roads coming,
- 19:32Speaker 5: you know the sun will come up tomorrow.
- 19:33Speaker 6: What are those kinds of conversations?
- 19:34Speaker 7: Like, I mean, first and foremost, you tell the congrats, right,
- 19:38Speaker 7: it's it's hard to be a big leader in any debut,
- 19:43Speaker 7: you know, whether it goes great or goes poorly. It's
- 19:47Speaker 7: something to you know, at least appreciate and give them
- 19:50Speaker 7: the do that. You know, they've done something that not
- 19:53Speaker 7: a lot of people get to do. And then, yeah,
- 19:56Speaker 7: you know, it's you keep your head up right. It's
- 19:59Speaker 7: that inning goes poorly. Everybody throws bad innings. It just
- 20:02Speaker 7: sucks that it, you know, might stick with you a
- 20:04Speaker 7: little bit longer because it's your first It's it's part
- 20:06Speaker 7: of the part of the process. And and you know
- 20:09Speaker 7: you're gonna remember it for whatever lens it is, good
- 20:14Speaker 7: or bad, taint it or not, but you know, it's
- 20:17Speaker 7: you've done something that not a lot of people can
- 20:19Speaker 7: can say that they've done, and you got to at
- 20:21Speaker 7: least appreciate that aspect of it.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Pee. I'm a big fan of your manager, Clayton.
- 20:27Speaker 3: You obviously had a chance to play under one of
- 20:28Speaker 3: the best managers in Kevin Cash. To kind of tell
- 20:31Speaker 3: me the similarities and differences between Cash and Clayton.
- 20:35Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think they're both. They're both pretty even, right,
- 20:38Speaker 7: They're not gonna let the ups and downs of the day,
- 20:44Speaker 7: you know, take them out of what they're good at,
- 20:48Speaker 7: you know, and I think that that's something that is admirable,
- 20:52Speaker 7: right to not be able to be able to kind
- 20:54Speaker 7: of separate yourself a little bit from the roller coaster
- 20:56Speaker 7: and and be objective and do what you need to
- 20:59Speaker 7: do to hopefully put everybody in the spot that they
- 21:01Speaker 7: need to be in to succeed.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Also, you obviously came from Tampa.
- 21:06Speaker 3: You're in Miami now kind of obviously in the state
- 21:09Speaker 3: of Florida, but similar kind of markets.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Are you seeing kind of.
- 21:13Speaker 3: You know, things change in Miami that kind of reminds
- 21:16Speaker 3: you of, you know, what you had seen in Tampa.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I think there's a lot of similarities and a
- 21:21Speaker 7: lot of stuff that's kind of tracking in ways that
- 21:25Speaker 7: I've definitely you know, grown grown accustomed to and seen before.
- 21:30Speaker 7: So yeah, I mean I think that Bendix is doing
- 21:31Speaker 7: a really good job and putting people in good places
- 21:34Speaker 7: and then you know, letting them be themselves and bring
- 21:37Speaker 7: a ton of value to the org. And I think that,
- 21:40Speaker 7: you know, even if it doesn't happen immediately, I think
- 21:43Speaker 7: that the the base is there to really improve organization wide.
- 21:51Speaker 1: AP.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I want to get to a couple of topics, you know,
- 21:54Speaker 2: scaling around the league. So one for you that I'd
- 21:57Speaker 2: be curious to get your take on how you talk
- 21:59Speaker 2: to a younger pitcher about this. So the picture on
- 22:02Speaker 2: the Pirates, Carmen mcginsky, you know, got moved to the bullpen.
- 22:06Speaker 1: He's been pitching well as a start.
- 22:07Speaker 2: He was vocal about wanting to stay as a starter,
- 22:09Speaker 2: and the Pirates put him on the restricted list because
- 22:11Speaker 2: he wasn't ready to pitch over the weekend in the bullpen.
- 22:13Speaker 2: So you know, obviously you're not there, so I'm not
- 22:15Speaker 2: going to have you slice and dice. My question is
- 22:17Speaker 2: more for what you tell a young pitcher who wants
- 22:21Speaker 2: to start and gets bumped to the bullpen and then
- 22:24Speaker 2: now he's hanging out with you and working on legos
- 22:27Speaker 2: out there and getting ready to pitch the eighth before
- 22:29Speaker 2: you go in the ninth or whatever, Right, Like, how
- 22:31Speaker 2: do you do that because you've got dirt in your spikes?
- 22:33Speaker 1: What would you say?
- 22:36Speaker 7: Let's put me on the spot. You know, I don't
- 22:37Speaker 7: know that situation, right, I don't know him. I don't
- 22:40Speaker 7: know how they, you know, operate, how it was presented
- 22:43Speaker 7: to him, et cetera. Right, it's to you know it
- 22:49Speaker 7: make that move, especially you know if you are a
- 22:52Speaker 7: very routine oriented guy can be tough, but you know
- 22:57Speaker 7: it's still you know, you're still providing value in some
- 23:01Speaker 7: capacity and hopefully you know they're able to resolve that situation.
- 23:05Speaker 7: Obviously have way past my pay rate. I didn't even
- 23:09Speaker 7: know that that's going on. Right. We're trying to be
- 23:12Speaker 7: where our feet are a little bit. But yeah, you
- 23:14Speaker 7: know you gotta eventually you got a pitch, And that's
- 23:21Speaker 7: part of it, obviously, that we all go through our
- 23:23Speaker 7: ups and downs. Whether you're frustrated about not throwing leverage,
- 23:25Speaker 7: you're frustrated about not starting, you're frustrated about any of it.
- 23:29Speaker 7: That's all, you know, valid right where nobody wants to
- 23:32Speaker 7: take anything away from that. So you know, that's a
- 23:35Speaker 7: unique situation that I don't know if I'm in a
- 23:37Speaker 7: great spot to speak on because I've never experienced anything
- 23:39Speaker 7: like that.
- 23:41Speaker 1: No, I didn't mean to put on spot that I met.
- 23:43Speaker 2: More like, you know, if you've got a teammate that's like, hey,
- 23:46Speaker 2: you know like KP mentioned, Hey, there were times when
- 23:48Speaker 2: I was hitting well and I wish I was lead off,
- 23:49Speaker 2: but I couldn't do it. Like it's more like, hey,
- 23:51Speaker 2: you got a young you know, a young teammate in general,
- 23:54Speaker 2: just putting this in a vacuum and they're like, hey,
- 23:56Speaker 2: I wish I was doing this versus that, you know,
- 23:58Speaker 2: how the veteran's able to kind of step in and
- 24:00Speaker 2: be like, let me tell you how this works, kid.
- 24:02Speaker 2: You know, in five minutes, unfortunately, someone usually gets hurt
- 24:05Speaker 2: and then you get back into that role. So just
- 24:07Speaker 2: crush it in the role you're given. You know, do
- 24:08Speaker 2: you have any of those kind of cliche things that
- 24:10Speaker 2: you drop.
- 24:11Speaker 7: I mean, you usually look, starting pitching depth is one
- 24:17Speaker 7: of the most valuable things in baseball, right, and chances
- 24:20Speaker 7: are there's always there will always be a need for
- 24:23Speaker 7: more starting pitching. So I mean, I wouldn't if that's
- 24:26Speaker 7: my diet, I wouldn't be too worried about it because
- 24:28Speaker 7: there will be opportunities, you know, to do that. If
- 24:31Speaker 7: that's what your calling card is.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Pete, take us through the logistics of the day that
- 24:37Speaker 3: you started because your wife was getting ready to have second.
- 24:41Speaker 7: Or third child, Yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Third child.
- 24:45Speaker 3: What was kind of like the conversation maybe the night before,
- 24:48Speaker 3: like hey, I'm willing to pitch, but it's got to
- 24:50Speaker 3: be early.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I got to get home.
- 24:52Speaker 3: What was the entire day like was your third born
- 24:54Speaker 3: that day as well?
- 24:56Speaker 7: No, we had a scheduled see sech in the next day,
- 24:58Speaker 7: so I booked to flight out for eight, you know,
- 25:02Speaker 7: thinking we play at one oh seven. I think one
- 25:05Speaker 7: o seven is that standard Yankee stadium start time? One
- 25:08Speaker 7: o seven even if it goes multiple even goes multiple
- 25:13Speaker 7: x trainings, will be good to go. And then it
- 25:16Speaker 7: rained all day and Clayton came up to me during
- 25:19Speaker 7: the right No. I was like, hey, we want you
- 25:21Speaker 7: to throw the first one. Throw the first one, get out, go, go, go,
- 25:26Speaker 7: get back to your family and get that done. And
- 25:29Speaker 7: that's exactly what happened. And then I threw a heater
- 25:32Speaker 7: that Ben Rice damn near hit out of the stadium.
- 25:38Speaker 1: It's good. Hey, I'll take us in another direction.
- 25:43Speaker 2: So, uh we we talked about this a lot last week,
- 25:47Speaker 2: and I think we've asked you about this before, but curious,
- 25:51Speaker 2: like this year for your take on it. Where are
- 25:53Speaker 2: we at with pitch tipping paranoia? Like how much action
- 25:58Speaker 2: is there where you feel like you know other teams
- 26:00Speaker 2: have something on one of the pictures you know on
- 26:02Speaker 2: your side or vice versa, and how much you know.
- 26:05Speaker 2: You're pretty tech savvy too, how much do you think,
- 26:08Speaker 2: you know, the tech is getting involved here where teams
- 26:10Speaker 2: are like our AI models say that, you know, this
- 26:13Speaker 2: pinky movement actually shows his forum with a little bit
- 26:17Speaker 2: of movement here, and that's how we can find something.
- 26:23Speaker 7: If it's that subtle. There's maybe like four people who
- 26:27Speaker 7: can find that. I'd say, you know, I have and
- 26:31Speaker 7: it's a little bit it's a little bit different outside
- 26:33Speaker 7: of the East. Your your paranoia level is is definitely
- 26:39Speaker 7: lowered when you're not playing New York and Boston and
- 26:44Speaker 7: Toronto thirteen times each throughout the year. But I mean
- 26:49Speaker 7: it's I'm as paranoid as they get now, So I'm
- 26:52Speaker 7: always anytime you see something out of the ordinary, you
- 26:56Speaker 7: see somebody doing something funny on second base, those sins,
- 26:59Speaker 7: those says are all immediately heightened, and and you're always
- 27:04Speaker 7: you're always grabbing the iPad and trying to see if
- 27:06Speaker 7: there's there's anything that that might be poking out at you.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Some good stuff.
- 27:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we we certainly obviously noticed parts of it, but
- 27:13Speaker 2: can't really get in on the h on the inside
- 27:16Speaker 2: of what's going on there. So appreciate the insight, dude,
- 27:19Speaker 2: have fun out there, good catching up.
- 27:21Speaker 7: Yeah, I appreciate it. Sorry for my mental laps, and.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Hey, it worked out luckily, lucky for you. We did
- 27:29Speaker 1: two hours live, so we uh we made it.
- 27:31Speaker 7: All We worked it all out, we got it done.
- 27:33Speaker 1: You're the man. Thank you, Pete.
- 27:35Speaker 7: We'll catch you so you guys,
