- 0:00Speaker 1: While the guys play Providence Sunday. The women are in
- 0:03Speaker 1: suburban Philly, though class with Villanove at the Finer and Pavilion,
- 0:06Speaker 1: where the men will be next week. Bob Joystepfisk will
- 0:10Speaker 1: have all the action beginning at One Over on the
- 0:12Speaker 1: River one O five nine the Varsity Network Gap in
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Varsitynetwork dot Com with Dan Hurley Mike Crispino here, Uh, coach,
- 0:18Speaker 1: we were talking. I mean we've been talking about this
- 0:20Speaker 1: since Hawaii Yukon's defense against the three. But these last
- 0:25Speaker 1: two games, I think there's been some progress there. I'm
- 0:28Speaker 1: curious what you think. I mean, statistically, it says your
- 0:33Speaker 1: team's been better against three point shooting in these last
- 0:36Speaker 1: two at Butler, at DePaul.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I mean it's creeping Uh, you know, it's creeping up
- 0:41Speaker 2: for us.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I think again, it's been a combination of awareness, you know,
- 0:45Speaker 3: just like situational basketball awareness, you know, technique, inexperience, not
- 0:51Speaker 3: being able to digest maybe a scouting report to be
- 0:54Speaker 3: able to you know, to utilize that information. Then you know,
- 0:58Speaker 3: a little bit of it just was bad luck, like
- 1:00Speaker 3: people shooting way above their averages even on semi contested
- 1:05Speaker 3: to contested three so obviously breakdowns where we've given up
- 1:09Speaker 3: way too many good looks, but we've also I think,
- 1:12Speaker 3: you know, part of it, maybe all the good fortune
- 1:14Speaker 3: from the last couple of years, you know, went the
- 1:16Speaker 3: other way for us for a stretch of games, but
- 1:20Speaker 3: a lot of it we've had done to ourselves. And
- 1:22Speaker 3: I think that's why we believe the team has got
- 1:25Speaker 3: a lot of upside, like we could be a much
- 1:27Speaker 3: better team than we are right now in February, in March,
- 1:31Speaker 3: because we've got so many young players that could make
- 1:35Speaker 3: greater improvement. I think there's a lot of other teams
- 1:38Speaker 3: in the country that are very old with players that
- 1:41Speaker 3: have hit their ceiling for the season, and maybe this
- 1:44Speaker 3: is as good as their team's going to be, Whereas
- 1:47Speaker 3: we have a team that potentially could get a lot
- 1:50Speaker 3: better than we are right now. And I think that's
- 1:54Speaker 3: what's I think that's what's kept us going as we
- 1:57Speaker 3: went through our struggles in November, was just a the
- 2:00Speaker 3: understanding that we have some people with a high ceiling,
- 2:04Speaker 3: like a solo Ball, like a Jaden Ross, like a
- 2:09Speaker 3: like a Jalen Stewart, like a Taris Red, like Aidan Mahaney,
- 2:14Speaker 3: people that could help us more leam mcneely's ability to
- 2:17Speaker 3: continue to get better and better and improve. Even in
- 2:21Speaker 3: alex Caraban, I think there's still there's more room.
- 2:24Speaker 2: For growth there.
- 2:25Speaker 3: There's different places that we could utilize him on the
- 2:29Speaker 3: court moving forward here to help him be even more
- 2:32Speaker 3: productive as a player.
- 2:34Speaker 2: At the offensive end.
- 2:35Speaker 3: So I think our group just it's got upside, which
- 2:39Speaker 3: was why I think we're able to to not get
- 2:43Speaker 3: demoralized when November wasn't wasn't very fruitful.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's exciting. I'll tell you the thought of that
- 2:51Speaker 1: is pretty darn exciting. Teams one, seven, row, eleven and three.
- 2:54Speaker 1: One final note on de Paul, I wanted to ask
- 2:56Speaker 1: you about an X and O kind of question. You
- 2:58Speaker 1: did a great job of stuff them on the three
- 3:01Speaker 1: point line in the first half, the Blue Demons two
- 3:04Speaker 1: for ten. They only took two three pointers in the
- 3:07Speaker 1: second half, but they took it to the rim a lot,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and they got to the line a lot twenty three
- 3:11Speaker 1: for twenty eight. That kind of kept them in the game.
- 3:13Speaker 1: They got within nine. What kind of adjustment do you
- 3:16Speaker 1: have to make now since you're getting out in the
- 3:18Speaker 1: perimeter your garden. Well, there teams are going to probably
- 3:21Speaker 1: adjust and say we're going to go buy them or
- 3:23Speaker 1: try to and get to the rim and maybe get
- 3:25Speaker 1: to the line and score it that way.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah. The only thing I think.
- 3:31Speaker 3: We could have done a better job of, yeah, because
- 3:34Speaker 3: they didn't have a stretch five because they're you know,
- 3:37Speaker 3: the Trainer and Benson as centers.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You know, when they were out on the perimeter.
- 3:45Speaker 3: And they just spaced this out and started to drive
- 3:48Speaker 3: our point guards, you know, Aiden, and they obviously attacked Aiden,
- 3:53Speaker 3: and they attacked Hassan, and they attacked Solo, the guys
- 3:57Speaker 3: that ye have shown up on films as guys that
- 3:59Speaker 3: could be you know driven. Just our center could have
- 4:04Speaker 3: maybe seen that and and rallied to the ball more
- 4:08Speaker 3: and supported, you know, we didn't want to now have
- 4:12Speaker 3: to help off there one through four, who are.
- 4:14Speaker 2: All very capable three point shooters.
- 4:16Speaker 3: But I think on that dribble drive, maybe you know,
- 4:19Speaker 3: the threat of the center just kind of you know,
- 4:24Speaker 3: showing his body at the paint more was just an
- 4:27Speaker 3: adjustment that we should.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Have made earlier, could have made earlier.
- 4:32Speaker 3: But when you have a fifteen to eighteen point lead,
- 4:35Speaker 3: twenty point lead goes to fourteen, back to seventeen back
- 4:40Speaker 3: to thirteen. You know, the only way you're probably going
- 4:44Speaker 3: to lose that game is if you give up a
- 4:45Speaker 3: barrage threes. You know, well, one of the best offensive
- 4:49Speaker 3: teams in the country, we're going to continue to score.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Once you have such a substantial lead, you know, the
- 4:55Speaker 3: only way that you're going to do it. The only
- 4:57Speaker 3: way you're going to blow it is live ball turnover
- 5:00Speaker 3: and giving up threes.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And uh, you know, it's just it's.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Gonna be really close to impossible, you know, to beat
- 5:07Speaker 3: us just by two pointing us to death at that point.
- 5:10Speaker 3: But uh, you know, we lacked discipline, We fouled too much.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Think a couple of them were maybe some calls that
- 5:17Speaker 3: uh you know, we're we're iffy. I know Hasan's fourth
- 5:22Speaker 3: foul was it was was not a great one, but
- 5:27Speaker 3: uh yeah, I think at that point of the game,
- 5:31Speaker 3: the only thing that's gonna beach his threes and live
- 5:33Speaker 3: ball turnovers. And maybe Samson and Taris could have come
- 5:36Speaker 3: down a little bit more once they put their heads
- 5:38Speaker 3: down and started driving it because their their center was
- 5:41Speaker 3: not a threat to shoot a three.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Uh on the foul situation, as I said, they got
- 5:47Speaker 1: to the line all those times, they shot them better
- 5:49Speaker 1: than they normally do.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, in.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Today's game, there's so much contact, right, especially in the
- 5:57Speaker 1: Big East Conference games, but there's so much sell of
- 6:00Speaker 1: the contact that players try to do. It is up
- 6:03Speaker 1: to the officials to understand that. And I often look
- 6:06Speaker 1: at that and I say, you should have known if
- 6:08Speaker 1: you've got to stripe shirt on, you should have known
- 6:11Speaker 1: that the guy's movement is you know, jerking his head
- 6:14Speaker 1: back didn't happen because he got hit, because that just
- 6:18Speaker 1: doesn't happen.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, And they were there just enforcing that that flop
- 6:23Speaker 3: and and you know, and selling those calls. And I
- 6:27Speaker 3: think the other thing is, you know, people, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 3: we move a lot, we cut a lot, a lot
- 6:31Speaker 3: of off ball action and and you know, it's frustrating
- 6:34Speaker 3: I think too. And people are you know, impeding our
- 6:37Speaker 3: ability to run and cut and they're grabbing us and
- 6:39Speaker 3: then and then flopping when we screen them. It's like,
- 6:42Speaker 3: if you're going to allow people to be real physical
- 6:44Speaker 3: and impede our movement, then you you you then you
- 6:49Speaker 3: you can't then call flops, you know on people taking
- 6:52Speaker 3: dives on screens. You can't grab us, hold us and
- 6:55Speaker 3: then get to a point of a screen and then
- 6:57Speaker 3: take a dive. There's no there's no honor in. And
- 7:00Speaker 3: then there's also you know, you just you can't. You
- 7:05Speaker 3: can't call that.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Yeah, no one wants to watch free throws, trust me.
- 7:08Speaker 1: A couple of years ago, the NBA decided, listen, we're
- 7:11Speaker 1: not going to let people impede cutters without the ball
- 7:14Speaker 1: run running through the lane and doing what they do.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And I think that's helped the NBA game to be
- 7:19Speaker 1: more fluid and more open and more offensive. So I
- 7:22Speaker 1: don't know, maybe that ends up.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Called early in the game, called early in the game,
- 7:27Speaker 3: so that the game is it's something that people want
- 7:29Speaker 3: to watch and people will stop holding and fouling and grabbing.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Just call it early in the game.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Right right, established what you're going to what the standard is?
- 7:38Speaker 2: All right?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Dan Hurly with us. We have Providence to talk about.
- 7:40Speaker 1: That's coming up just a moment. It is the Yukon
