- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: The Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all
- 0:12Speaker 2: the news from Patriots Training Camp.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:19Speaker 2: have you covered? What did I miss yesterday? Now here
- 0:21Speaker 2: to review today's practice the writers of Patriots dot Com.
- 0:25Speaker 3: All right, welcome into another episode of the Patriots Training
- 0:28Speaker 3: Camp Cast. I Mike do So, joined by Paul Prillo
- 0:30Speaker 3: and Evan Lazar and guys. We just finished practice number ten.
- 0:33Speaker 3: It was a tough one. There's a lot of running today.
- 0:35Speaker 2: For the writers.
- 0:36Speaker 4: It wasn't too tough for us.
- 0:37Speaker 3: We were properly hydrated, We had our binoculars, we were
- 0:40Speaker 3: taking our notes. But for the players, a lot of
- 0:43Speaker 3: short short downs, you know, short yardage, ground and pound.
- 0:47Speaker 3: We even saw some tackling today, live tackling. When was
- 0:49Speaker 3: the last time you saw a live tackle.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It's gotta be.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Twenty years, Mike, in all seriousness, Belichick used to do
- 0:55Speaker 2: some live goal line stuff, and even that we haven't
- 0:57Speaker 2: seen a lot of recently. They would tackle to the
- 1:00Speaker 2: ground and live goal line. But today in the middle
- 1:03Speaker 2: of the field, there were I don't know, maybe two,
- 1:06Speaker 2: you know, two two full periods, you know, ones, twos, threes,
- 1:12Speaker 2: tackling live to the ground, and it was hot.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Again.
- 1:15Speaker 2: The humidity is just unrelenting and it's it's great whether
- 1:18Speaker 2: I think if you're a football coach to sort of
- 1:20Speaker 2: trying to prepare your team. But yeah, yeah, the players
- 1:23Speaker 2: went through a lot today. I would say, looked hot.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Looked hard.
- 1:25Speaker 2: What did you think?
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yeah, this was not a football practice for people that
- 1:28Speaker 4: want to see a lot of passes down the field
- 1:31Speaker 4: or seven on seven or you know those the passing
- 1:34Speaker 4: camps as we call them. This was old school, smash
- 1:36Speaker 4: mouth short yardage football that I thought was largely controlled
- 1:40Speaker 4: by the defense today. It wasn't a whole lot of
- 1:43Speaker 4: space in the run game and in some of the
- 1:45Speaker 4: passing as well. A lot of pressure I felt like
- 1:48Speaker 4: on the quarterback today too. And then you have the
- 1:50Speaker 4: live tackling in there. So that gave the defense another
- 1:53Speaker 4: sort of advantage that they haven't had in the past.
- 1:55Speaker 4: So after two practices last week where we felt like
- 1:59Speaker 4: the offense is making some strides, the defense punched back
- 2:02Speaker 4: a little bit today, especially today.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He might kind of expect it just in this kind
- 2:05Speaker 3: of situation, but you know, I thought last week we
- 2:07Speaker 3: did see some space in the run game and there,
- 2:09Speaker 3: you know, it did feel like there was some progress.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I totally agree, Paul. I know you were down below watching,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but not a lot to write home about with the
- 2:15Speaker 3: offense today. Defense was very active. Uh you know another
- 2:19Speaker 3: I picked up an interception as well, Kyle dark who
- 2:22Speaker 3: was it.
- 2:22Speaker 4: I'm fully blanket on Myne Bentley.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Because they did some live goal line too at the
- 2:28Speaker 2: beginning of that really ramped up physical period, and I
- 2:32Speaker 2: thought Bentley was all over the place. He had a deflection,
- 2:35Speaker 2: a pick a, you know, a good a good tackle,
- 2:38Speaker 2: and open field too, so I did. There were a
- 2:41Speaker 2: lot of piles. I thought they were just creating a
- 2:43Speaker 2: lot of piles, and that's good. You know, that's good too,
- 2:46Speaker 2: gapping up front where you're not necessarily getting a lot
- 2:48Speaker 2: of penetration in the running game, but there are just
- 2:50Speaker 2: no lanes for the running backs to go. Just getting
- 2:53Speaker 2: piled up and immediately getting stopped. Yeah, you know, the
- 2:55Speaker 2: running back as he hits the line of scrimmage, he's
- 2:57Speaker 2: got to stop his legs because there's just no way
- 2:59Speaker 2: to go.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Oh.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So, depending on your perspective, you know, it was a
- 3:03Speaker 2: really good practice for the defense, you know, offensively, probably
- 3:06Speaker 2: still a work in progress.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike Purcell, big big guy right in the mix
- 3:10Speaker 3: in there with Devon Godchawn, you can see why. Just
- 3:13Speaker 3: a huge guy that can kind of control things. Otherwise though,
- 3:17Speaker 3: and I we don't want to get into too many details,
- 3:18Speaker 3: but we just I felt like we saw some twists today.
- 3:20Speaker 3: You know, some guys, different guys playing at fullback. We
- 3:22Speaker 3: saw a little bit of trickeration with some plays and stuff,
- 3:25Speaker 3: so you know, maybe layering some of that stuff in.
- 3:27Speaker 3: But to me, the big takeaway was what we said
- 3:29Speaker 3: first though, it was just this was a hard practice.
- 3:31Speaker 3: This feels like one of those practices where you're trying
- 3:33Speaker 3: to kind of not punish your team but really just
- 3:36Speaker 3: put them to a really hard, long practice that kind
- 3:38Speaker 3: of brings out the character of a team.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Yes, I feel like it's really interesting how Girod Mayo
- 3:43Speaker 4: has done this because as a former player, you always
- 3:47Speaker 4: hear players coach, and I know he's done some interviews
- 3:49Speaker 4: where he's pushed back a little bit on being called
- 3:52Speaker 4: a players coach. These practices to me do not feel like, hey,
- 3:56Speaker 4: he's taking it easy on the players at all. These
- 3:59Speaker 4: are long pre pctices, in the middle of the day,
- 4:01Speaker 4: in the middle of the heat, physical full pads, so
- 4:04Speaker 4: I have been it's interesting. I don't know what to
- 4:07Speaker 4: make of it yet, but it's interesting that they've decided
- 4:10Speaker 4: to go pretty hard the last couple of days. And
- 4:12Speaker 4: you do wonder with the starters or the ones, if
- 4:15Speaker 4: you want to call him that, how much action those
- 4:18Speaker 4: guys are gonna get on Thursday night, if they're gonna
- 4:20Speaker 4: have two back to back days in pads and go
- 4:22Speaker 4: at it a little bit.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Just listening to a couple of the guys out, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: Jelani Tavai talked about, you know, you got to get
- 4:27Speaker 2: your your head and your shoulders ready for the physicality
- 4:30Speaker 2: to tackle to the ground. And that's the first thing
- 4:32Speaker 2: I thought of, as well, this is how he's getting
- 4:34Speaker 2: that because he's probably not going to get it on Thursday.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It was the first thing I thought of, is what
- 4:38Speaker 2: Evan just said, which makes sense. That's what coaches do
- 4:41Speaker 2: a lot. Sometimes you'll see a joint practice, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and the ones quote unquote will get the majority of
- 4:47Speaker 2: the work because they're not going to play in the game.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I think we saw a little of that today.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So just some housekeeping things as well. A little bit
- 4:53Speaker 3: of good news. Tekwon Thornton missed the practice last week,
- 4:55Speaker 3: was back on the field, had a pretty nice catch
- 4:57Speaker 3: I thought in seven on seven's are in the red
- 5:00Speaker 3: zone against Christian Gonzales. Nice touchdown craft for him. Jahem Bell,
- 5:03Speaker 3: who we haven't seen in a while, also back out there.
- 5:05Speaker 3: But it also seemed like Jabrill Pepper's kind of rounding
- 5:08Speaker 3: back into full participation even though he really only missed
- 5:12Speaker 3: one practice. Marcus Jones though not back. A little bit
- 5:14Speaker 3: of a disappointment, Paul, I know you talked about that.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I kind of hope to see him, and just with Thornton. First,
- 5:20Speaker 2: the touchdown was actually full team, it was eleven on
- 5:23Speaker 2: eleven red zone, but he spent some time after that
- 5:26Speaker 2: and the rest of practice down in the lower rehab field,
- 5:28Speaker 2: so he's clearly working back from something. But a good
- 5:31Speaker 2: time to see him right back out. They're only missing
- 5:32Speaker 2: one day. A couple of guys return today, Jahem Bell
- 5:36Speaker 2: in Calvin Anderson, but still you know, kind of searching
- 5:40Speaker 2: for that mix up front that still stands out to me.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But Darien Lowe and Calvin Anderson, where you're left and
- 5:45Speaker 2: right tackles today, and you know, I think if we
- 5:48Speaker 2: open the season like that, I don't think fans would
- 5:49Speaker 2: be overly excited about that. Now.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Krafoor continues to watch, right.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Yeah, cor four continues to watch and Caden Wallace to
- 5:56Speaker 4: me is going through some rookie growing pains right now
- 5:58Speaker 4: is a nice way to put it. He's had some struggles.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I felt like, especially in the one on ones, you
- 6:03Speaker 4: can see some of the technique issues that he's still
- 6:05Speaker 4: working through are coming up in those situations when he
- 6:09Speaker 4: goes up against some veteran guys, they kind of know
- 6:12Speaker 4: what the counter with, you know, based off of what
- 6:14Speaker 4: he's doing. So maybe we were a little bit premature
- 6:18Speaker 4: with getting excited about Caden Wallace. At the beginning of
- 6:21Speaker 4: last week he was at left tackle with the ones
- 6:24Speaker 4: and it felt like he was making some progress the
- 6:26Speaker 4: last couple padded practices. Maybe coming back down to earth
- 6:30Speaker 4: a little bit for him and I will see what happens.
- 6:32Speaker 4: But I still feel like him and Jukes being the
- 6:35Speaker 4: starters at tackle week one makes me feel a lot
- 6:38Speaker 4: better because at least there's some upside and some unknown
- 6:40Speaker 4: there Whereas the Vidarian Lowe and Calvin Anderson, you kind
- 6:43Speaker 4: of know what they are at this point in their
- 6:44Speaker 4: NFL career. But it's similar to the quarterback like with
- 6:48Speaker 4: Kayden Wallace. Do you just throw them out there trial
- 6:50Speaker 4: by fire and hope that he swims instead of sinks
- 6:53Speaker 4: in the deep end? Or do you ease it in
- 6:55Speaker 4: like you probably are going to do at quarterback. It's
- 6:58Speaker 4: an interesting conversation, but without full padded practices for the
- 7:03Speaker 4: most part in season, it does feel like with offensive
- 7:06Speaker 4: linemen it's almost better to play them to get them
- 7:09Speaker 4: those live game reps so that they can develop that way,
- 7:12Speaker 4: because otherwise they're going to be doing a whole lot
- 7:14Speaker 4: of watching during the regular season.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Anything else we missed from today's practice. It was a
- 7:19Speaker 3: long one, not a lot to write home about. Not
- 7:20Speaker 3: a lot of big plays.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll just say, you know, for the quarterbacks. I know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: we're just focusing on quarterbacks. Today wasn't the day, you know.
- 7:27Speaker 2: You know, the few throws they made were mostly short.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Drake May did take a couple of deep shots that
- 7:32Speaker 2: neither one of them was really there. They were both,
- 7:34Speaker 2: you know, slightly overthrown. But for the most part, it
- 7:38Speaker 2: was a lot of getting the ball out quickly because
- 7:40Speaker 2: Evan said it early in the podcast, there was a
- 7:42Speaker 2: lot of pressure on the passer today.
- 7:44Speaker 3: All right, So ten practices down, we'll be back outside
- 7:46Speaker 3: tomorrow for the eleventh practices. We get ready for the
- 7:49Speaker 3: Panthers coming in Thursday nights, and I'm really sure we
- 7:51Speaker 3: are expecting things might be backing pads again tomorrow, So
- 7:54Speaker 3: maybe it'll be another tough one, maybe a little bit
- 7:56Speaker 3: more throwing at the ball, but you know, we'll have
- 7:58Speaker 3: you covered here on Patriots dot com, So to check
- 8:00Speaker 3: back in tomorrow afternoon for a full Patriots training campcast recap.
