Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: I'd be a morning person if mornings started at noon.
- 0:07Speaker 2: It's Sonia and
- 0:08Speaker 1: Joakim on the
- 0:09Speaker 2: Shock
- 0:10Speaker 1: circuit on
- 0:10Speaker 2: 987. Joakim Gomez here with you, and look, a bit
- 0:15Speaker 2: of a backstory for you, and you know how whenever
- 0:17Speaker 2: I bring on a guest, I like to glaze them.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I think this was sometime last year or a few
- 0:23Speaker 2: months ago. One of my friends forwarded me a video
- 0:26Speaker 2: of this girl singing at a market. She was doing
- 0:30Speaker 2: Chopsway by System of a Down, a song that we've
- 0:34Speaker 2: not played on 987 in what, so many years, and
- 0:38Speaker 2: A lot of people when they question my music knowledge
- 0:41Speaker 2: and my music taste and I list them bands, they
- 0:43Speaker 2: would say joking, you're very unk. It's unk music, and
- 0:47Speaker 2: then I see someone like her performing that and now
- 0:50Speaker 2: the winner of America's Got Talent. It gives me hope
- 0:53Speaker 2: that the kids are alright. Say hello to Nene Royal
- 0:56Speaker 2: live in the studio.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Wow. Mini, welcome back to Singapore and it's amazing. What,
- 1:05Speaker 2: what a journey you've had. I'm a fan. I, I
- 1:08Speaker 2: love the videos and ever since that Chop sue video,
- 1:11Speaker 2: I've followed you.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And I've seen you sing so many times in those videos,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and I'm glad that everything is happening for you now.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Very well deserved. Thank you. Can I, can I ask
- 1:21Speaker 2: you on the very first question though? Nene Royal, that, that,
- 1:25Speaker 2: that stage name that you have, what's the meaning behind it?
- 1:28Speaker 2: How do you come up with it? Tell us. Yeah. OK, well, basically,
- 1:32Speaker 2: my actual, my actual real name, it's Prayo. It's a
- 1:36Speaker 2: Thai name.
- 1:37Speaker 2: And I, I was busking in the night markets called
- 1:40Speaker 2: Naka Night Market, but actually in Tai Tala Ziaofawareti in
- 1:45Speaker 2: that time. OK, I'll get the inflection wrong if I
- 1:47Speaker 2: say it not, OK, and then.
- 1:51Speaker 2: My first stage name is Prao Zhaofa. Prao is my
- 1:55Speaker 2: actual name. Zhaofa is the name in the night market.
- 1:58Speaker 2: It's in Thai name, so it's called Tala Zhaofa Wati. Yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I'm trying, yeah, I'm trying to get the thing correct pronunciation.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It's just one line.
- 2:09Speaker 2: set the bar higher for me. Yeah, well, yeah, and
- 2:12Speaker 2: then there's so many national people who say my name wrong,
- 2:18Speaker 2: hard to say, pronounce my name. It was like sometimes
- 2:20Speaker 2: like PO Pi Paal Paint. I don't know, so I
- 2:25Speaker 2: was like.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I should change my name. I should have like English name,
- 2:31Speaker 2: so I decided to put Nanay because that's the easy
- 2:35Speaker 2: pronounce and it's a cute name for me and also
- 2:38Speaker 2: I was so young. I use that name because I
- 2:41Speaker 2: watched a cartoon. It's like a flamingo cartoon. I think
- 2:45Speaker 2: I remember that. Is it a Thai cartoon or a
- 2:48Speaker 2: Western cartoon or I think it's like.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Um, let's say I think it's Thai, yeah, and the
- 2:54Speaker 2: flamingo name is like Nene, and I love that cartoon,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but I don't know what's the cartoon name, but yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 2: so I decided to put Nene and the Royal is
- 3:04Speaker 2: the name in the night market.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So you know jiaofa, but in English it said royal.
- 3:11Speaker 2: It's kind of like queen rock girl, you know. So
- 3:14Speaker 2: I decided to put nene royal. We are definitely with
- 3:17Speaker 2: the queen right here in the 987 studio. That's such
- 3:19Speaker 2: a nice backstory. So before we focus on your journey
- 3:23Speaker 2: on America's Got Talent.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And I want to ask about your performances on the
- 3:26Speaker 2: market in in the market. How did that journey even
- 3:29Speaker 2: begin in the first place? Did you just pick up
- 3:31Speaker 2: the guitar one day and went, I want to sing,
- 3:33Speaker 2: and you just did it? Or were you trained? Did
- 3:35Speaker 2: you practice? How did you start? Well, basically, I started
- 3:38Speaker 2: playing guitar since I was 7, but at that time,
- 3:41Speaker 2: I don't know any music. I don't know how to
- 3:44Speaker 2: play guitar and I don't know what is guitar. I
- 3:46Speaker 2: don't know what is bass.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So I don't care about music at that time because
- 3:49Speaker 2: I want to join like in school summer I wanna
- 3:52Speaker 2: join like computer science, math, English. I just wanna study
- 3:56Speaker 2: that's all but like when I go to to school
- 4:01Speaker 2: we have to sign the club stuff so I wanna
- 4:04Speaker 2: sign Commodore but it's full and they told me like
- 4:08Speaker 2: it's only music club and I was like.
- 4:12Speaker 2: What is music? So, so very much if you think
- 4:15Speaker 2: about clubs like CCA here in Singapore. So yes, tell
- 4:17Speaker 2: us more about the music club then. Yeah, so I
- 4:20Speaker 2: wanna try some like challenge. It's like maybe like for fun,
- 4:24Speaker 2: you know, I didn't, I didn't expect about it to
- 4:26Speaker 2: be like performing on busking week. So I go and
- 4:30Speaker 2: the teacher told me like if you want to study
- 4:33Speaker 2: there's only guitar lesson and you have, if you want
- 4:35Speaker 2: to study guitar you have to buy.
- 4:38Speaker 2: The first guitar first and then come to study and
- 4:40Speaker 2: I was like how can I buy that? I don't
- 4:42Speaker 2: know where to buy that guitar so I go to
- 4:45Speaker 2: like some the mall that they have like music instruments
- 4:50Speaker 2: so I just buy I bought like a cheaper one
- 4:54Speaker 2: it's not like a perfect guitar so.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I played that
- 4:59Speaker 2: And I start to learn like easy chords, like E minor, C, G, D.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And then I think I played like 3 days and
- 5:08Speaker 2: I can play 1 song already. So it's called Zombie. Oh,
- 5:13Speaker 2: there we go, which we'll be hearing in just a
- 5:15Speaker 2: while on 987 and then you learned Zombie and all
- 5:19Speaker 2: your other musical influences like all the bands you listen to.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Where did you find them and how did you fall
- 5:24Speaker 2: in love with this style of music, rock and that
- 5:27Speaker 2: grungy vocals of yours? Well, basically,
- 5:30Speaker 2: I didn't know about the style of music in that time,
- 5:35Speaker 2: but I think I was like 9 years old, I guess,
- 5:38Speaker 2: or 8 or 9. My dad.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Who's in the studio? Yeah, he's right right there. Hello, sir. Paul. Hello.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and my dad, me and my parents, I was
- 5:52Speaker 2: like sit in the back in the car and my
- 5:53Speaker 2: dad was open to radio. He in love rock music.
- 5:58Speaker 2: It's like his age, like 90s music or 2000, I
- 6:02Speaker 2: don't know, but he opened the songs like his favorite
- 6:07Speaker 2: band such as um Deep Purple, ACDCs, you know.
- 6:14Speaker 2: His his favorite rock music and I was like listen
- 6:18Speaker 2: and in my mind I was like oh that's kind
- 6:20Speaker 2: of like fit for me so I decided to tell
- 6:24Speaker 2: my dad like I wanna play rock music like this
- 6:28Speaker 2: style what you're opening right now and then my dad
- 6:30Speaker 2: was like are you sure? Because that was like a
- 6:33Speaker 2: bit hard for you and I was like I know
- 6:35Speaker 2: what you mean like I know that boys that the
- 6:38Speaker 2: only guy who's playing rock but women can also play
- 6:42Speaker 2: rock so.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I, I decided to play rock music and I started
- 6:46Speaker 2: to play electric guitar.
- 6:48Speaker 2: So I started to play a first solo piece is
- 6:51Speaker 2: called Hotel California by the Eagles. Yes. Can I just
- 6:54Speaker 2: say to everyone here who says I have taste in music,
- 6:57Speaker 2: your argument now is null and null and invalid anymore, OK?
- 7:00Speaker 2: It's null and voided. Uh, how do you take care
- 7:03Speaker 2: of your voice? Because the rock star is a very
- 7:05Speaker 2: different like and I mean, you performed with Linkin Park
- 7:08Speaker 2: on stage as well. I think Emily Armstrong has a
- 7:10Speaker 2: similar vocal range to you. How do you? Were you
- 7:13Speaker 2: even trained or did singing come naturally to you? Well,
- 7:17Speaker 2: Let's say I think the most important it's like to
- 7:21Speaker 2: understand how to use your voice and also when you're
- 7:26Speaker 2: trying to scream my first time I tried to scream
- 7:30Speaker 2: and it's a bit hard for me so I practice
- 7:34Speaker 2: and then I know how to use to scream because
- 7:36Speaker 2: you have to sing like.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Like in your stomach but not in your neck because
- 7:42Speaker 2: every time I thought it was that we have to
- 7:44Speaker 2: sing in your neck but it's not you have to
- 7:45Speaker 2: sing in your stomach so that's how you sing and
- 7:48Speaker 2: also I.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Um, I always, before I sing, I always used to, um,
- 7:54Speaker 2: vocal warm up, vocal warm up. OK. And one last
- 7:57Speaker 2: question before we take a very quick break. Then when
- 7:58Speaker 2: we come back, we'll focus on your America's Got Talent journey. Yeah, um,
- 8:03Speaker 2: the kids around you in the band, were they your friends?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Were they your neighbors, schoolmates, music club? Yeah, wow. And basically,
- 8:12Speaker 2: I was like in.
- 8:14Speaker 2: The music school and also I don't know who who
- 8:19Speaker 2: are they because we're in different school like I'm in
- 8:22Speaker 2: international school and they're from like Thai school and there
- 8:26Speaker 2: are the Thai school other Thai school so we know
- 8:29Speaker 2: which we meet in the music school it's called Yamaha
- 8:34Speaker 2: yeah and then.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Um, um, we have a lesson, like a band session,
- 8:40Speaker 2: so teacher in Yamaha decide to like.
- 8:44Speaker 2: They're going to pick up like this girl's going to
- 8:46Speaker 2: be in this band, this guy going to be in
- 8:48Speaker 2: this band. So yeah, that's how we know each other.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And then I love rock and I was so scared. Like,
- 8:55Speaker 2: are they going to love rock music? But actually they really,
- 8:59Speaker 2: really love rock music. So we're fit to that teacher
- 9:03Speaker 2: who plays them in a band. Well done. Well done
- 9:05Speaker 2: to you. Chin Joim Gomez here with you, not alone
- 9:07Speaker 2: in the studio. We have the entire team of hers
- 9:10Speaker 2: as well. It's Ninny Royal. Hello again.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Two Part two of the interview. By the way, I
- 9:17Speaker 2: forgot to ask, is is 9:30 a.m. considered early for you?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Is this OK? It's fine. It's fine, great, because she's
- 9:23Speaker 2: only 16. I always, I always wake up in that
- 9:26Speaker 2: time because I go to school. Yeah, there you go,
- 9:28Speaker 2: wait till you get to 38. Anyway, OK, so we,
- 9:31Speaker 2: we spoke about your beginnings earlier. Now let's talk about
- 9:35Speaker 2: America's Got Talent. Sure.
- 9:37Speaker 2: How did this happen? Was it because of the videos
- 9:39Speaker 2: you posted, you went viral and someone from America's Got
- 9:42Speaker 2: Talent saw and said, hey, let's try to get on
- 9:44Speaker 2: our show and see how far she goes, or was
- 9:46Speaker 2: it a dream of yours? Well, actually, that's my dream
- 9:49Speaker 2: because like I was so young and I watched all
- 9:52Speaker 2: of acts in America's Got Talent, not only America, British's
- 9:55Speaker 2: Got Talent, Thailand Got Talent.
- 9:59Speaker 2: All around the world that's my talent and but I
- 10:02Speaker 2: just wanna be on stage like imagine because I watch
- 10:07Speaker 2: it and I wanna be like wait I wanna perform
- 10:10Speaker 2: in that stage like I'm gonna jump on it so
- 10:14Speaker 2: I decided to send the audition clip videos. I'm like
- 10:17Speaker 2: I don't know how many times, 4 times I guess,
- 10:20Speaker 2: but like.
- 10:21Speaker 2: First time America's Got Talent didn't respond to anything, so
- 10:25Speaker 2: I decided to send 2nd time, no response. 3rd time,
- 10:29Speaker 2: no response, but 4th time I was like, OK, that's
- 10:35Speaker 2: going to be the last chance for me. So America
- 10:37Speaker 2: just text me, said like, you're gonna be on America's
- 10:41Speaker 2: Got Talent, so you need to come in America. I
- 10:43Speaker 2: was like.
- 10:46Speaker 2: What? Yeah, how long was the the date? So they
- 10:49Speaker 2: be here in 2 days or 3 days or a
- 10:51Speaker 2: week or how long was the travel time? Uh, it's
- 10:55Speaker 2: like 1 month, 1 month, 1 month, but that's too
- 10:59Speaker 2: short for me because I need to like prepare the songs.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I decided to, to do zombie for the audition, but basically,
- 11:07Speaker 2: I didn't know that I'm going to audition like actual
- 11:10Speaker 2: performance on that stage because I thought it was like.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I was in a backstage and I saw like a
- 11:16Speaker 2: stage behind right here, but it's small and like there's
- 11:19Speaker 2: like 1000 acts and some like team works in America.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So I thought I'm going to perform here. It's like
- 11:28Speaker 2: not like in front of the audience, not in front
- 11:31Speaker 2: of like 4 judges, Simon, you know, Sophia, Melby, Howie.
- 11:36Speaker 2: So I thought it was like this performance and if
- 11:38Speaker 2: I pass, I'm going to go to that performance, that stage.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So basically the team just came to me and said like,
- 11:45Speaker 2: are you ready to be on stage? And I said, yeah.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So but I asked the question like, am I supposed
- 11:51Speaker 2: to be performed here, the back of me, like a
- 11:55Speaker 2: small stage and I say, nope. And I was like,
- 11:59Speaker 2: So, what, what is that for? And I said, that's
- 12:02Speaker 2: the problem.
- 12:04Speaker 2: That's the prop for like shooting some stuff in like
- 12:06Speaker 2: behind the scenes before you go on stage and I
- 12:09Speaker 2: was like, so which stage am I going? And then
- 12:12Speaker 2: she said, follow me. So I walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, walk,
- 12:15Speaker 2: and then there's like the crowd just scream and I
- 12:18Speaker 2: was like.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Am I actually going to perform here? And then she said, yep,
- 12:23Speaker 2: good luck. And I was like,
- 12:26Speaker 2: Girl,
- 12:27Speaker 2: Am I supposed to perform here? And she's like, yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 2: in front of an audience like 33,000 people and 4 judges.
- 12:37Speaker 2: So I was like, I didn't expect that. I didn't
- 12:39Speaker 2: imagine that I'm going to be performed in that stage,
- 12:42Speaker 2: like a big stage for audition, and I'm so, so nervous.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I just walked on stage and then I was speaking
- 12:51Speaker 2: and my hand was shaking.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Like, hi, my name's Nanay and.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It's so nervous. I don't know what am I going
- 13:00Speaker 2: to do. So I decide to be calm, to imagine
- 13:05Speaker 2: like this stage. It's like a nan a market or
- 13:08Speaker 2: like think about like that's my concert. That's where I
- 13:12Speaker 2: perform always. And when I stopped the rave guitar, my
- 13:15Speaker 2: nerves was gone. I just enjoy it. And then I
- 13:19Speaker 2: love the moment that
- 13:21Speaker 2: When I said sing with me, come on, the zombies songs,
- 13:26Speaker 2: everyone just stand up and then sing and the judges
- 13:29Speaker 2: also sing. So I'm very happy and very successful. I, I,
- 13:34Speaker 2: I might remember this wrongly. I've seen the video. Nobody
- 13:36Speaker 2: pressed the golden buzzer, right? You, you, you got through
- 13:39Speaker 2: with 4 yeses, why didn't.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Anyone press the golden buzzer? That was a golden buzzer
- 13:45Speaker 2: moment for you already, but OK, we go from the
- 13:47Speaker 2: audition to the grand finals, to which you won, of course,
- 13:50Speaker 2: Lincoln Park. I'm a huge fan. And, and when they reunited,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I actually flew to Korea to watch the concert and
- 13:57Speaker 2: I got a selfie with them. I loved it. And
- 13:59Speaker 2: to see you on stage with Emily Armstrong, who's an
- 14:01Speaker 2: equal like rocker girl as well.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And if I'm not wrong, there was a story online
- 14:06Speaker 2: saying that how Linkin Park actually were not free, but
- 14:09Speaker 2: when they found out it was you, they made time
- 14:11Speaker 2: in their schedule to play alongside you. If I'm not wrong,
- 14:15Speaker 2: what was it like performing with them for the grand finals? I,
- 14:18Speaker 2: I could be wrong. It could be just know, but
- 14:20Speaker 2: the thing is like, um, for the final round is
- 14:24Speaker 2: the date is for the result and
- 14:27Speaker 2: The team told me to like, oh, there's gonna be
- 14:30Speaker 2: like a fun show so I want you to perform
- 14:34Speaker 2: the songs by Linkin Park and I was like.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I didn't know about this. I just learned this song,
- 14:42Speaker 2: The Emptiness Machine by Licky Partridge one day. I can't tell.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Nobody can tell, yeah, because like.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Because at that time it's the final performance and the
- 14:54Speaker 2: next day it's a result. So yeah, when I finished
- 14:57Speaker 2: the performance and then they come to me, they're like, OK,
- 15:01Speaker 2: they're gonna be performance tomorrow, so I want you to
- 15:04Speaker 2: play the songs called The Emptiness Machine by the Linkin
- 15:07Speaker 2: Park and I was like, when is it performed? I
- 15:09Speaker 2: like tomorrow.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I practiced like whole night. Yeah, because I need to
- 15:21Speaker 2: practice like perform like perfect. I don't want to get
- 15:24Speaker 2: a mistake so.
- 15:27Speaker 2: And then the result day I was like practicing in
- 15:32Speaker 2: music room, but they told me like oh I want
- 15:35Speaker 2: you to practice with the dress also and I was like.
- 15:38Speaker 2: OK, cool. So I, so I practiced and I think
- 15:43Speaker 2: it's like 10 minutes, the, the cameraman just come in
- 15:48Speaker 2: the room and I was like, am I supposed to
- 15:50Speaker 2: be here? And there's like more, more, more, it's like
- 15:53Speaker 2: 20 people. Yeah, the entire teams. And I was like,
- 15:57Speaker 2: am I supposed to be here or am I supposed
- 15:59Speaker 2: to leave? And then like the, the sound engineer, like
- 16:04Speaker 2: about taking care of Mike come to me and said like,
- 16:07Speaker 2: OK, I'm gonna put your mic on it and I
- 16:09Speaker 2: was like, what is it for? And I said, oh,
- 16:11Speaker 2: it's for interview some stuff and I was like, really?
- 16:15Speaker 2: Because in my schedule it doesn't say any interview and
- 16:18Speaker 2: I was like, oh, they just make a messed up.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I was like, OK, cool.
- 16:22Speaker 2: So they put the mic on and then they said, OK,
- 16:25Speaker 2: you're gonna do a practice by yourself and I'm going
- 16:27Speaker 2: to check the sound, but actually they already recorded, so
- 16:32Speaker 2: they lied to me and then all the and then
- 16:36Speaker 2: the team other teams about the cameraman just come to
- 16:39Speaker 2: me and said, oh, and also there's like a friend
- 16:41Speaker 2: like our act like America's Got Talent and Friends just
- 16:45Speaker 2: like want to jam with you and I was like,
- 16:46Speaker 2: you know, it's like a jam session. So I was like, OK.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Cool, and when I started practicing, Linkin Par just came
- 16:56Speaker 2: in and I was like.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Did you stop or do you keep going? I almost faint.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I was like.
- 17:05Speaker 2: What the hell is going on? What the heck is
- 17:06Speaker 2: going on? I saw Mike, um, Emily, Joey, uh, Dave, Phoenix.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was like shocked and I was like,
- 17:22Speaker 2: it's just a jam session, but I didn't expect like
- 17:25Speaker 2: I'm going to perform like collab with them. So Lingy
- 17:29Speaker 2: Park just talked to me, said that, I heard that
- 17:31Speaker 2: you're practicing our songs, the emptiness Machine. So we decided
- 17:35Speaker 2: to play with you guys in the performance. I was like.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah. What? And then we just practice like 3 minutes
- 17:46Speaker 2: before we go on stage and then done. Beautiful. Amazing stuff.
