- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Carlin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by C Keith. This is episode 433.
- 0:19I'll be your host Kyle Cord, and I'm here with my Co host, Nate
- 0:23Reyes. Nate Howdy, Howdy.
- 0:29Let's get rowdy. All right.
- 0:33So was it last episode? Was the episode before we were
- 0:36referencing an old episode like one of the OG episodes, like one
- 0:41of the first five? Do you remember what it what
- 0:43what we were talking about? Me singing Sinatra, that's what
- 0:46I mean. Neil Diamond.
- 0:48Yep. Yep.
- 0:48Episode 3, I believe it was. So you gave me a little
- 0:52inspiration and I went back and listen to a couple of the old
- 0:58episodes because I recently I've been thinking with these intros,
- 1:01I'm like, you know, are we, are we bringing the same kind of
- 1:04juice? We bringing the same kind of
- 1:06energy we did back when we were, you know, fast and loose with
- 1:11the pod. We weren't as polished.
- 1:12You know, like, what? What was that, like,
- 1:15embarrassing, dude. I went back and it was it, It
- 1:19was like, if you. So tell me if you remember this.
- 1:22It would be like for me it'd be like what up?
- 1:25What up. Welcome back to the three O
- 1:28take. My name is Kyle Corwin.
- 1:30And then I'd flip to you and I'd be like Nate say hello to the
- 1:32people and you'd be like what are people.
- 1:37So rest assured, we we have. Since we we've got it straight
- 1:42I. Mean.
- 1:42I'd like to think so. I think we bring a little bit, a
- 1:45little bit more to the table with these intros and just
- 1:48episodes in general. So we're growing.
- 1:53Growth. Nothing was worse is when we
- 1:55when I first came on that first episode when I was shaky.
- 1:59Oh, hi. Gross.
- 2:04What happened? Glad to be on the podcast.
- 2:07What was that? I don't know, man.
- 2:09I don't know. I think I got, I got lost in the
- 2:12followers. You were like telling me all
- 2:15this stuff and I was looking at Facebook, you know, like, I
- 2:18think I want to do a podcast. And then you're going, this
- 2:20guy's probably got like a million listeners on his
- 2:23podcast. We've.
- 2:23Got a lot of people listening. Oh man, now I don't even
- 2:30remember what I say, you know, it's it's all just flows out of
- 2:33me and I have no idea if I'm even correct or not.
- 2:39He just blacks out for an hour. Let's let's talk some baseball.
- 2:45Sure. Ronell Blanco, actually, pause.
- 2:52You know what, I don't want to talk about Renell Blanco just
- 2:55yet. There's something, there's
- 2:57something a little more pressing that we have to address.
- 3:00Yeah, look, the the Oakland ace. I mean the the biggest let down
- 3:15in the history of let downs. I mean what was that?
- 3:19Hold on. I need to I need to pull up that
- 3:21that that tweet I sent you. All right.
- 3:23So this Oakland A's bet as a reminder like a week or so ago
- 3:33Nate said over the next 14 games the Oakland A's will not go,
- 3:37will not play 500 or better baseball.
- 3:39And I said they absolutely will. Let's bet on it.
- 3:41So we determined that the loser of the BET for like once the BET
- 3:45complete is completed, we'll have to wear a Oakland A's gold
- 3:49polo and an Oakland A's green green visor for every episode
- 3:54until the All Star Break, which I think amounts to like a dozen
- 3:58episodes. Delightful.
- 4:00I felt so confident with the way that the A's had been playing.
- 4:04And. Just certain guys.
- 4:06OK, so according to Underdog fantasy, this was a tweet I sent
- 4:11you. The Oakland A's since April 28th
- 4:13and this was as of May 14th, LED baseball and homers.
- 4:19LED baseball and runs scored. LED baseball and RB is LED
- 4:23baseball and OPS. Brent Rooker, JJ Bladet, Abraham
- 4:27Toro, and Shay Langleers AKA Shay Bangleers all have an OPS
- 4:32over 1000 during this time and that.
- 4:35Again, that was as of May 14th. So I'm going.
- 4:37I was on to something there. Like I was feeling good for the
- 4:40right reasons but just weren't getting dubs.
- 4:44So as it stands right now, and it's very possible by the time
- 4:48you're hearing this, the A's will have lost their game
- 4:51tonight, Wednesday night, bringing the bet to a close.
- 4:56Because as it stands right now, they need to win out for the
- 4:59next 5 games for me to finish at 500.
- 5:03So that's where we're at with that bet.
- 5:05So by next episode we will more more than likely know the result
- 5:10of this wager, but just wanted to yeah, wanted to provide that.
- 5:14Update Get a good look at Casey now 'cause this will be the last
- 5:18time you see him in streets. Just gonna be in the Billy Bean
- 5:21uniform. I thought about.
- 5:23I thought about showing up like a collared shirt, just to let
- 5:25you know. Ease in a little bit.
- 5:27Maybe feel a little bit professional before I just turn
- 5:30this into a clown show with the Billy Bean look, but yeah, alas,
- 5:35here we are all. Right.
- 5:37Are you? Are you?
- 5:38First off, are you a little nervous about the hairline?
- 5:41Has that come? Has that crept into the thought
- 5:43process? No, I think the visor will, I
- 5:46think we'll be good. I I think we'll be all right
- 5:48there, I think. It's disappointing 'cause that's
- 5:52what I'm looking forward to most.
- 5:54Well, I'm just gonna. I'm gonna manipulate the visor
- 5:56whatever way I need to, to make sure that that's not an issue.
- 6:00So and I was thinking about it. I don't know if I've ever not
- 6:04worn a hat on this, on this podcast.
- 6:06I think of the 433 episodes. I don't know if I've ever not
- 6:10worn. AI think there was one.
- 6:12I think there was one. I remember I remember it.
- 6:17I was pretty surprised by it. I don't know if that ever
- 6:20happened. I don't know why it seemed like
- 6:22a random thing. I don't know who does the
- 6:27laundry more, you or Meredith? Let's say it's a healthy.
- 6:32Split seeing that that gold polo in there.
- 6:36Yep, that'll be fun. That'll be fun.
- 6:40That'll be a lot of gold. Oakland A's green and gold for
- 6:42the next next couple months. But enough of that.
- 6:46Let's talk Renell Blanco. So in the 4th inning of last
- 6:53night's last night being Tuesday night's game against the
- 6:57aforementioned Oakland Athletics, a game in which the
- 6:59Astros only won two to one. By the way, I don't care how
- 7:03poorly the the Houston Astros are doing or how good I think
- 7:07the Oakland as are that that should not be a score coming out
- 7:10of that match up. But 4th inning the umpires come
- 7:17out, they go into full on inspection mode after handful of
- 7:23minutes. Joe Espade is out there, Blancos
- 7:25out there. The infielders have have
- 7:28corralled around the the the mound.
- 7:31The verdict was that Ronaldo Blanco could not continue his
- 7:37outing, that he would be ejected.
- 7:39And the news broke today actually that he was dealt A10
- 7:44game suspension and a fine. So where where do we go?
- 7:56Where do we go with this? Where where do we start?
- 7:59Because there's there's so many angles we could take.
- 8:02We could talk about the the hypocrisy of of umpiring crews
- 8:07when it comes to this issue. We could talk about how stupid
- 8:11you'd have to be as a pitcher to intentionally use some sort of
- 8:15stuff substance, especially on the inner palm of your glove.
- 8:21Where do we want to start here We could start with the quote
- 8:25from the umpire that said it was he said it was the stickiest
- 8:28stuff I've felt on a glove since we've been doing this for a few
- 8:31years now which I thought I'd I mean if you're.
- 8:39I just don't know if you're stupid enough to use a substance
- 8:41substance intentionally Why and it and it was that sticky why
- 8:46are you putting it in that in that location I don't know where
- 8:49do where do we go? Who was the umpire?
- 8:53I I saw the video. Was it Las Diaz?
- 8:56Yeah, yeah, he was the third Tuesday night.
- 9:00OK, so let's let's take that a little bit.
- 9:04Obviously the crew chief, right. So we got to take that into
- 9:07account I believe. So I think he's a crew chief.
- 9:12Yeah, Eric Bacchus was the guy that was handling the glove, it
- 9:20seems. I mean they, I think they all
- 9:21pass it around, but I think I saw that he was the guy that was
- 9:27confiscating the glove, as it were.
- 9:30But yeah, I I think last Diaz was right there in the mix.
- 9:35Yeah, let's take that into account.
- 9:36I don't know, I it's it's so hard.
- 9:38I'm not going to do the whole the easy, you know, Astros
- 9:43cheating. I think you and I are kind of
- 9:46both over that at. This point be done, baseball
- 9:49fans, What are we? Come on.
- 9:52Yeah, this guy. I mean, 95% of the roster wasn't
- 9:56involved with that. So kind of over it.
- 10:00I don't know, man. I don't know.
- 10:03Like I I got to imagine that no one's intentionally doing this
- 10:11right now. Whether you're testing the
- 10:15envelope a little bit, like pushing the envelope and like
- 10:18testing the borders of how much sunscreen you're putting on or
- 10:22what you're or are you just using the rosin on the back of
- 10:27the mountain? That's what he claimed it was.
- 10:29It was just rosin. We've seen that.
- 10:33We've seen the videos, you know that the famous videos of Bauer
- 10:36doing the the rosin and and sunscreen and a ball just
- 10:39sticking to his palm with no fingers on it.
- 10:45It's so subjective. It's so subjective, like how
- 10:49many umpires are cracking down, How many umpires are really like
- 10:53sticking their hand inside of the glove as much as what we
- 10:58saw, how how many guys are, you know, it comes that like clip
- 11:02with the old guy doing the security check at the you know,
- 11:05not touching anybody. Like how many umpires are doing
- 11:08that? How many umpires aren't how many
- 11:11I It's just it's hard for me to imagine a pitcher today doing
- 11:15this when there's so many checks.
- 11:19When there's so many checks, I I I got to imagine.
- 11:23I got to give him the benefit of the doubt.
- 11:25That's what I'm going to say. I'm just going to give the
- 11:27benefit out. I I'm not going to say like
- 11:29ignorance. I'm going to say like I don't
- 11:32think he was doing anything. I don't think he was using
- 11:34anything. I think he was using what's
- 11:36given to him and you're in a humid environment in Texas with.
- 11:41Sweating buckets. Indoors, sweating and you know,
- 11:45using rosin I, that's what I that's what I'm leaning towards.
- 11:49What was interesting though, I saw, I saw something today
- 11:55regarding those checks that you mentioned because I agree like
- 11:58some some umpires are very much like all right, I I want to be
- 12:02doing this about as little as you want to be doing this.
- 12:04Let's just get this over with whatever.
- 12:06Then there's some guys that you see on the broadcast as you're
- 12:09going to commercial break on TV that are are certainly more
- 12:12intentional with with their checks doing doing their job to
- 12:16the best of their abilities. I guess I don't know whatever
- 12:19you want to chalk it up to. But I saw something that said
- 12:22that Bacchus or Bacchus, whatever you call him, the the
- 12:29first base umpire said that there was nothing on his glove
- 12:34during the check in between or in the middle of the first
- 12:37inning. But then he found something when
- 12:42he did his second check, the time when all this started to
- 12:47unfold in the 4th. So we went three innings without
- 12:51a check 'cause no. It's possible they may, I don't
- 12:54know, like do they rotate checks or something.
- 12:58I I don't know because he he said that he he references, he
- 13:05referenced it as his second check.
- 13:09So I don't know if if there are, if there are, if there's like a
- 13:13rotation. And regarding the checks or not,
- 13:15I don't know if it's the same guy every time or what.
- 13:18But yeah, yeah. So I don't know.
- 13:23I don't know what to take of that.
- 13:24I don't buy. I don't see the reason for it
- 13:27and just like logically and I'm not going to go down the road of
- 13:31like, oh, is this why he's had such a great start to the year.
- 13:34Not I'm not pulling at that string.
- 13:36We see numerous checks every game.
- 13:38So like I'm not. I'm not I'm not going to sit
- 13:42there and say that I I don't think he meant to do this it I
- 13:49don't think there was any intent to it.
- 13:51I it just doesn't make sense. You're you're having an
- 13:55incredible start to the season you've you've begun what is very
- 13:59much a a breakout conversation. You've established yourself
- 14:04you're you're already doing well.
- 14:08You're on a team that is fighting to get back.
- 14:12You're one of the only starters that's been super consistent.
- 14:17It just doesn't make sense as to why he would do it.
- 14:20So I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
- 14:23Now I'm leaning towards rosin and sticky sweat.
- 14:34Renault Blanco says he asked the umpire to check his hands
- 14:37because if there's something sticky in the glove, it should
- 14:39be on his hands. They didn't check his hands, he
- 14:42said. He thinks Rosin and he said he
- 14:44thinks it's rosin and he didn't know it's illegal for it to get
- 14:47on your non pitching hand. So I don't know what to make of
- 14:50that quote necessarily but I I the the part that I focus on
- 14:53there is where he talks about how common sense would tell you
- 14:59like if it's in his glove it should be on his hands and then
- 15:02they just chose not to. I don't know if that's confirmed
- 15:05that's that's coming from the mouth of Renell Blanco.
- 15:08I mean, I'm sure you can go back and and dissect the video a
- 15:11little bit more, but like how are we not?
- 15:16If you're doing all this investigating of the glove, why
- 15:18not? Why not the hands?
- 15:20Which brings me to the the bigger issue for me, you going
- 15:24back to the the word that you use subjective.
- 15:28The whole process by which these umpires go through in terms of
- 15:38determining what level of stickiness has to be achieved
- 15:42for an ejection to take place or or whatever.
- 15:44Or what steps need to be taken to avoid an ejection such as
- 15:48allow. Oh I don't know, allowing a guy
- 15:50to go wash his hands. I mean, we talked.
- 15:54We broke that down. I mean that's happened on
- 15:56multiple occasions. I think 2 instances I can think
- 16:01of where the Yankees alone. I think Domingo Herman at one
- 16:04point was allowed to wash his hands and I want to say Clay
- 16:07Holmes was another guy maybe a maybe a year or two ago or may
- 16:15have been recent. I don't remember.
- 16:16But I I feel like he was a name that popped up recently.
- 16:18But it's just like what are we, what kind of system are we
- 16:25following here? If some guys are allowed to wash
- 16:27their hands and some guys aren't, it just it.
- 16:32It to me, I I I I feel like umpires just wake up.
- 16:37Not just with this, but with anything these days.
- 16:39I just feel like umpires are waking up going, what do I feel?
- 16:44What What call do I feel like making today?
- 16:47What? What?
- 16:48I'm saying what? Rule book do I feel like
- 16:50adhering to today? And they just.
- 16:52Go with it. That's why Las Diaz has to be
- 16:55this. There has to be a part of the
- 16:56conversation and taking into account, because we've seen
- 16:59numerous of times that he is pretty confrontational when he
- 17:04gets pushed, it's almost like certain umpires are seeking this
- 17:08stuff. And again, of course, I mean,
- 17:11what do we get? We get one quote, we get one
- 17:14sentence. Then every time this happens,
- 17:17it's an umpire saying it's, it's the stickiest they've ever felt.
- 17:21I don't know, man, I we need some type of structure to this.
- 17:28But I agree, like, why not change gloves?
- 17:31You got to use someone else's gloves.
- 17:34Sorry. Wash your hands.
- 17:36Go get a new glove. Like what?
- 17:40Why not? Why can't that be a thing?
- 17:44Call me crazy, would this would this course of action not make
- 17:48the most sense? OK, it's the third inning.
- 17:51You check there's nothing there. Comes back out for the pitches.
- 17:56The 4th? You check there's something
- 17:59there. Rather than assume that he's
- 18:03using Spider Tack or a combination of gasoline and and
- 18:10Vaseline, I don't know. Whatever.
- 18:13Whatever they're they're assuming that these guys are
- 18:16using to get some sort of competitive advantage.
- 18:18Rather than assume the worst, why not just have the next step
- 18:23in the course of action Just be Go wash your hands, change your
- 18:26glove, and let's get back to the game.
- 18:31It's always got to be some type of production.
- 18:33It's always got to be this big thing.
- 18:36If you checked at the beginning of the guy's outing and didn't
- 18:40check again until the end, OK, I could understand why an
- 18:43objection would be warranted because guys would then be able
- 18:46to just get away with whatever they want.
- 18:47But you're checking every inning, So what kind of
- 18:52advantage is he really garnering in a in 1/2 inning because you
- 18:57said you checked? Right.
- 18:59And then checked again. What you're saying is like the
- 19:01checks mean that everything else is clear.
- 19:03Everything that was gotten to this point.
- 19:05Correct. Cleared.
- 19:06So like, all we need to do is, you know, go wash change and
- 19:10we're back to where we were. We're all clear, Yeah.
- 19:14I mean if I I understand like if you stick your hand in there and
- 19:17it's it's like Maple syrup coming out, OK, you're gone.
- 19:21But like if if you have to sit there for minutes at a time for
- 19:26these, for these checks, for these reviews to determine
- 19:29whether it's just an ejection is warranted, that that really
- 19:34tells me that it's so borderline to being something that you
- 19:41would arguably deem like appropriate, acceptable.
- 19:47So if that's the case, then I I don't know.
- 19:51I just, I I I don't understand the the subjectivity of it.
- 19:56For something like this, I feel like there should be a little
- 19:58bit more. There should be a a more set in
- 20:01place course of action that follows.
- 20:05You know, a a red flag being raised where it's a oh, OK,
- 20:08whoa, whoa there. We got a little something here.
- 20:10OK, well, then do something else besides just toss the guy and
- 20:16then suspend him and fine him. I'm not saying condone cheating.
- 20:21As it were. But, like, if the guy's not
- 20:23cheating and it's just truly a a mixture of him sweating buckets
- 20:28and the rosin that he's using that you've told him he can use
- 20:31that's on the back of the mound, then what are like, What are we
- 20:35really doing? Here.
- 20:37Yeah. Does he think the suspension
- 20:39gets appealed and dropped down at all?
- 20:43Or no, he I saw, I saw just before we hopped on that, he
- 20:45said. He's started.
- 20:47He's starting it tonight, so it's already been accepted,
- 20:50which I I felt was also strange cause like you know, he's trying
- 20:56to defend himself. You got other people in the
- 20:59baseball community, it seems they're trying to you know bring
- 21:03bring some inject some sense into this conversation, 'cause
- 21:05it's clearly lacking with the umpires.
- 21:08But then he just kind of, I, I don't want to say falls on his
- 21:10sword, but you know, just it's like I I'm not going to fight
- 21:14it. Well, like why not fight it?
- 21:16Like, if you if you truly believe that the situation was
- 21:20mishandled, then why are we just taking the hit there, especially
- 21:25with the way you've been throwing it.
- 21:26Like I I'm sure, I'm sure A10 game suspension's not going to
- 21:30throw them too far off track, but like, why risk it?
- 21:32You know, it goes. On your record, I think it's
- 21:34it's like getting a speeding ticket, you know what I'm
- 21:36saying? Like when you know you're a good
- 21:38driver and all of a sudden you, you just get caught on on a bad
- 21:41day, it sits on the record. You're like, it's not fair.
- 21:48It's not fair. I don't know, man.
- 21:51It is what it is, I guess now. I mean, it's it's done.
- 21:54It's just. I don't know.
- 21:55But there's got to be some kind of system moving forward.
- 21:57There's got to be, I think maybe some warning.
- 22:05Barring ridiculous tackiness. I don't know, Nestor.
- 22:13That's who it was. Good call.
- 22:16Yeah, it's Nestor and Domingo. I remember that.
- 22:19I was going to say Clay Holmes didn't ring any bells, but.
- 22:23Yeah, I don't know it. It's pun intended, It's a it's a
- 22:29messy situation. I just.
- 22:30I just wish that I wish the league could clean this up like
- 22:35this. This issue has gone on far long
- 22:37enough, like establish A substance that works for
- 22:40everybody. That's what I'm saying, like
- 22:41this and just move. Forward.
- 22:43This is ridiculous. Yeah.
- 22:46Like, keep the checks, whatever, I I get it.
- 22:48Like even if you establish A substance, like that's with
- 22:51that's with society. Like if you create a law, it
- 22:53doesn't mean people are going to follow it.
- 22:54But at the very least if you're creating a substance, you're
- 22:57you're getting everybody on the same page.
- 22:58And then you, you you maintain the checks and that way you can
- 23:02you can, you know, you can watch over it.
- 23:09I don't know it. But we're going to make this
- 23:11more confusing than it is to me because that seems to be what
- 23:14Major League Baseball likes to do.
- 23:17Speaking of confusing, I'm not. I'm not getting all the Ron
- 23:24Washington hate. I mean, I I get it.
- 23:27It's it was probably the most predictable outcome when we when
- 23:33we found out that he was taking this job as manager of the Los
- 23:37Angeles, CA Angels of Anaheim, LA, Angeles, California.
- 23:44But it's still it's still a little shocking like we we we
- 23:51knew this was coming because this is what happens to any
- 23:54manager regardless of their status in the game or with the
- 23:59with the respective franchise. This is a perfect example why I
- 24:03want Jason Vertec to stay put. I've said that for years now.
- 24:08I don't want his name ever mentioned in in conversations
- 24:12for Red Sox managerial vacancies.
- 24:15Ever. Stay put.
- 24:21What a wild, what a what a crazy way for this game to end on
- 24:26Tuesday. Or was it Wednesday?
- 24:30No, Today's Wednesday. Today's Wednesday.
- 24:32Tuesday night. Yeah. 76 Loss to the Cardinals
- 24:41Louis Giormei comes to the plate with the bases loaded and is
- 24:49given in the bottom of the eighth, and is given the the
- 24:51squeeze bunt sign. Or is informed that he needs to
- 24:55lay down a squeeze bunt whether it was before his at bat or
- 24:58during the at bat, or as his at bat was the beginning.
- 25:03At some point was given notice that he needed to lay a bunt
- 25:07down and boy did he not squeeze play.
- 25:12I think it was Zach Nido. He's making his way home from
- 25:163rd so you could it it. We know it wasn't a safety
- 25:21squeeze. I don't know if it was a full on
- 25:25suicide squeeze because it did it it well.
- 25:29It seemed like it took Zach a minute to make it to the plate.
- 25:33Although he may be of he may be of you know hesitated a little
- 25:36bit maybe tried to make something out of it before it
- 25:38was too late. But it certainly wasn't a safety
- 25:41squeeze. So with that said, I think which
- 25:43because I think that's a very important detail that a lot of
- 25:46people are missing and we were talking about it before we
- 25:48hopped on. I initially was planning on this
- 25:51being a a rather brief segment but as the day went on and I'm
- 25:55I'm reading more into Angels fans thoughts and just general
- 26:01onlookers bystanders that that wanted to share their thoughts
- 26:05on the on how this situation played out.
- 26:09I've seen a lot of people commenting on the play itself
- 26:16that clearly have never played baseball a day in their life and
- 26:22I'm not sitting here trying to pull like the well what do they
- 26:24know we at least played baseball.
- 26:26That's not what I'm trying to say.
- 26:28I'm simply saying there are nuances to what happened that
- 26:34without that context would make it very easy to look at how the
- 26:40play ended up or or developed, unfolded and go Oh well, Ron
- 26:43Washington's an idiot. That's that's that's not on
- 26:46that's not on Louise. That's on Ron.
- 26:49I'm not sitting here trying to absolve Ron Washington of any of
- 26:52any fault here because he he dealt with the The Post game
- 26:57presser a little bit too, too strongly.
- 27:00So we'll we'll get to that. But the play itself, a safe, a
- 27:07squeeze or a suicide squeeze, is where the runner on 3rd is
- 27:14advancing to home. The second The second pitcher
- 27:18chooses to go home. That's when they take off.
- 27:21When the pitcher commits to the plate, that's when he's taken
- 27:24off and you better hope and pray as the hitter.
- 27:29Or if you're a fan watching that, the guy that's up up at
- 27:33the plate, you just better hope and pray that that ball gets put
- 27:37down. Because if not, you see you see
- 27:41it play out exactly the way it played out in the Angels game.
- 27:44Your guy gets hosed at the plate, doesn't stand a chance,
- 27:48and the inning or or however progresses usually ends up not
- 27:53the way you want it to. So that's what's not being
- 27:56talked about enough is the fact that you're literally taught in
- 28:01like youth travel, baseball, high school, college, throw the
- 28:07bat at the ball if you have to, but you have to put the bat on
- 28:11the ball. And I don't care if it's three
- 28:13balls off the plate because I I saw a lot of people.
- 28:15I I was literally just getting into it with a guy on Twitter
- 28:18before we hopped on. He was like, the ball is 3 feet
- 28:20off the plate. You need a telephone pole.
- 28:22It wasn't 3 feet off the plate. It was, it was 3 feet off the
- 28:25plate if you look at where the catcher received it.
- 28:27But when it crosses the plane of the plate, you can get a bat on
- 28:31that. He just wasn't able to get a bat
- 28:33on it and you're going, well, how could he get get a bat on
- 28:36it? You have to throw the bat at the
- 28:39ball if necessary. You got it.
- 28:41You have to sacrifice any, any, any semblance of posture that
- 28:45you have to make sure that you can reach beyond the plate to
- 28:53have full coverage of even the zone, outside of the zone, to
- 28:58make sure that you get the ball down.
- 29:00And he didn't do that. And that's exactly what Ron
- 29:02Washington was talking about after the game.
- 29:06Again, you got into a little bit with the quotes there, which
- 29:09we'll touch on, but what were your, what were your thoughts on
- 29:12how on how the play panned out? Yeah, I mean you you nailed, you
- 29:17hit the nail on the head. This is a this is a squeeze.
- 29:20I don't know I what you did, but like in high school and college
- 29:25like it was mixed in during BP. Like it it you would start your
- 29:29round with if it was your first round, you typically go like I'm
- 29:33going to go oppo or hit and runs.
- 29:34It's situational right? So every BP hitter has a
- 29:38situational round to start. You start with bunts.
- 29:41My college coach would mix in, mix in, squeeze opportunities in
- 29:46there and he would purposely throw weird pitches.
- 29:49He would throw at you. He would throw wild.
- 29:51He would spike one and like if you missed two in a row your
- 29:55that round was over and you're out.
- 29:57Like you I would get kicked out that that would happen at
- 30:00certain levels. I don't know.
- 30:02I highly doubt this is being practiced.
- 30:05This is one of the things where like this is a very old school
- 30:08play. Ron Washington is a very old
- 30:10school baseball mind. He mentioned that, you know, he
- 30:15didn't feel good about the left on left.
- 30:16He didn't want to hit into a double play.
- 30:19So this is what he called and and like for fans that are
- 30:22getting on him, I'm not going to get to the comments yet.
- 30:25We'll get to that in here in a SEC.
- 30:26But like the play call is, it's just one of those.
- 30:32He's a genius. If it if it pans out, then he's
- 30:34an idiot if it goes wrong. And that's just how it goes.
- 30:40But yeah, I mean like this is something we're taught.
- 30:43I just, I don't think it's practiced a lot anymore.
- 30:47I don't think it's practiced enough.
- 30:50I can't speak specifically for Angels practices or pregame
- 30:55stuff. Maybe Ron has mixed that in.
- 30:58Maybe it's been a requirement. I don't know.
- 31:01But like, there's a reason why it just it doesn't get called
- 31:04very often anymore. And there's a reason there's
- 31:09certain scenarios for it. I do feel for gear.
- 31:12Gear me because like, he just got to town.
- 31:16Homie just got to LA. I know I There's probably a
- 31:21connection that they had in Atlanta beforehand, but like,
- 31:26tough comments to hear if you're brand new to the squad.
- 31:34Yeah it in in thinking about this this incident it it really
- 31:38just reminded me or reinforced the the fact that and I'm hear
- 31:45me when I say this, I'm I'm not trying to just dump on the
- 31:48current generation of baseball fans.
- 31:50But there is I feel like a lack of context.
- 31:54Sure they have numbers they have data down to the decimal.
- 32:00But there's a lack of for for the ones that haven't played
- 32:03baseball at any level. There's a lack of understanding
- 32:06to the nuance. And you you look at something
- 32:09like this that we've already explained where it's like if you
- 32:12just see the play develop and you don't really know what needs
- 32:16to be done or or or how that play is on a on a technical
- 32:20level supposed to develop, then you're going to look at that and
- 32:23go again. Ron Washington's an idiot but
- 32:26you have to understand the nuance and it.
- 32:28Another example of that is when you see you see these fans on
- 32:34Twitter using they they put they'll post screenshots on
- 32:37Twitter of the K Zone and they'll it'll be like a ball off
- 32:41the plate when in reality it was much closer.
- 32:44But you know how the how those K zones work like they're never
- 32:47perfect and even if it even if it's spot on even if it's like a
- 32:52ball off the plate it'll it'll the the circle will be touching
- 32:55the line, the border of the strike zone and they'll go how
- 33:00did how did our guy get rung up that's clearly off the plate and
- 33:05the the play in question was a guy leaving the bat on her
- 33:09shoulder with the bases loaded in two outs.
- 33:11It's it again, that's the that's the lack of understanding the
- 33:16nuance of the game. Or the vice versa role of a a
- 33:21pitcher being wild all day and not getting one of those calls
- 33:25and understanding that like if he's spraying it it, the umpire
- 33:29is less likely to call that and when it's a borderline pitch.
- 33:32So keep going. But yeah, nuances are are all
- 33:35over the place that yeah, fans need to pick up on.
- 33:37Yeah, like with the K zone thing, it's like, sure, it's a
- 33:41ball on paper or on on screen and even in real life in the
- 33:46game. But the nuance of the game is
- 33:49you have a human umpire behind the plate.
- 33:51And regardless what you think about it, you're going to have
- 33:54to deal with his zone that day. And if he's calling his zone
- 33:58wide, then you're going to have to expand your zone as a hitter.
- 34:02And so for for the this current generation of fans who are, and
- 34:07again I'm, I'm not trying to just dump on them.
- 34:10I'm I'm just simply bringing an observation forward is that if
- 34:14you look at that, you go like these umpires suck.
- 34:19It's like well, maybe, yeah, that's that's true at at times
- 34:24in certain situations. But also shift some of that
- 34:26blame towards your hitter for not taking the bat off his
- 34:29shoulder with two strikes and two outs and the bases loaded
- 34:32like you got to you got to you got to put bat to ball or at
- 34:36least make an attempt. I don't care how well he knows
- 34:39his zone. That's what you're taught is to
- 34:41expand the zone with two strikes.
- 34:43So I I I've had enough of the the the K zone screenshots.
- 34:49I I it's it that doesn't tell me anything like that doesn't show
- 34:53me. It doesn't prove to me anything.
- 34:55You just have to understand the nuances of the game.
- 34:57That's all but the quotes man. Let's, let's talk, Let's talk
- 35:02about his, his one or two liner afterwards, he said.
- 35:08Washington explained afterwards why he called for the squeeze
- 35:11bunt in that situation. He said lefty on lefty and with
- 35:14a sinker baller on a left-hander.
- 35:16I didn't want him to hit into a double play.
- 35:18He said he he can handle the bat.
- 35:21He didn't do the job. It wasn't anything I did wrong.
- 35:25He didn't do the job. Now, look, I get it, man.
- 35:31Guys, managers included, players, managers alike, you can
- 35:34get frustrated. You can get caught up in the
- 35:36heat of the moment, especially if it's the Los Angeles Angels
- 35:38of California, Anaheim, LA. That's a frustrate, frustrating
- 35:42organization to be a part of right now.
- 35:43So I get it. Like sometimes you may be a
- 35:46little slip of the tongue, but I mean, for a guy that's been
- 35:51around the game that long, that's that's a tough line to
- 35:55drop on your guy. I see both sides.
- 36:03For the record, I do too. I'm just saying like I I can see
- 36:06it from the other side. I I mean, I I do hear what
- 36:09you're saying just because of the fact that like, again, he's,
- 36:11he's brand new to the clubhouse. He just got traded there a
- 36:14couple days ago. It was like last week.
- 36:17Whether you're familiar with that player or not, like that
- 36:20guy's still trying to fight for a role on this team.
- 36:23He's still trying to fight for relationships with his
- 36:25teammates, but we've been praising Ron Wash on a lot of
- 36:33different instances. We saw a moment where he kind of
- 36:39lit into Joe Adele for making it out.
- 36:42You know, I think he didn't slide at second or something
- 36:44weird like that. We've seen him go out on visits
- 36:48to the mound and have a conversation with that pitcher.
- 36:57It's things that we grew up seeing in managers and it's
- 37:01somewhat of a a breath of fresh air that it feels like we're not
- 37:05just watching 2 calculators play each other.
- 37:09We're watching someone that has a a finger on the pulse of the
- 37:12game. I think Ron Washington has a
- 37:18responsibility with this organization to correct things,
- 37:23to get things back on track. But I think I would assume that
- 37:27that was probably one of the reasons he was brought in is to
- 37:32just get things back in order in an old school mentality.
- 37:38He's not wrong. What he said wasn't wrong.
- 37:42Players have to have accountability.
- 37:46Do you say that to the public? Do you say that an oppressor?
- 37:51Do you maybe save that moment for a closed door clubhouse or
- 37:55even a a closed office one-on-one with that player?
- 37:58Like that's a different conversation.
- 38:02But like you said, like the reason we didn't like this and
- 38:07you posted that on Twitter today, it was, it was a
- 38:10flashback of the our, our conversation we had when this
- 38:13initial hire happened. Back in November.
- 38:17The reason we didn't like this is because it felt like it was
- 38:20an unwinnable situation for Ron Washington.
- 38:24Looking at this roster, looking at the position the organization
- 38:28is in, this was going to be frustrating from the jump.
- 38:33This was going to be at best of 500 ball club at best best case
- 38:41scenario and in a a guy in in his resume, in his history.
- 38:50What he's since done with the Braves and the relationship he's
- 38:53built with players and and the admiration he's gotten and
- 38:57praise that he's gotten for his infield coaching abilities like
- 39:02and what seemed to be like this very much player, pro player,
- 39:06coach mentality, being in this situation just felt unwinnable.
- 39:11And now I think we're just starting to see it unravel a
- 39:14little bit. I'm not saying like all the, you
- 39:17know, the training wheels have fallen off and we're just going
- 39:19haywire here. But like when you get a cut and
- 39:24dry old school manager and you're asking his opinion in a
- 39:30frustrating season that's that's happened so far in an unwinnable
- 39:34situation, this is what you get. This is what you get.
- 39:38This is why we weren't about it. This is why we weren't feeling
- 39:40Ron Washington in in this role. But I'm still with my guy.
- 39:48I'm still with Wash. I'm still, he's not wrong.
- 39:52Again, Guillerm, I didn't get the bunt down.
- 39:55He didn't get wood on it. And that's like, that's a,
- 39:58that's a that's a rule that's embedded into us since we
- 40:02started picking up a bat. Specifically in this situation,
- 40:06this is what you got to do, and I bet he would sit there and own
- 40:11up to it. It's just the tough thing of.
- 40:13Like I'm trying to find that message.
- 40:15I'm trying to find the quote. He he did acknowledge it.
- 40:21But yeah, to your Sorry, keep going.
- 40:24No I was just looking for it. Yeah I I think it's you know
- 40:28it's you're you're probably getting a guy and and Jeremy I
- 40:30think he's you know he's been around a little bit he he is
- 40:33typically been a a role guy. He's typically getting you know
- 40:37two or three games in a week. He's not a full time you know
- 40:44permanent marker into the lineup every day.
- 40:46So I think he understands that like he's got to make the best
- 40:51of his opportunities. I don't fully agree with the way
- 40:55Ron Wash went about it, but I don't disagree with what he
- 40:57said. And and getting grown men to
- 41:02have some accountability for their jobs that they're getting
- 41:04paid a lot of money to do this is what it takes to flip the
- 41:09script or or flip the mentality or change what this organization
- 41:15has been about. And like, it's not easy coming
- 41:18in and saying, you know, we're about winning here.
- 41:21We need to make this about winning and we need to change
- 41:23some things and I'm pro run wash still even after this.
- 41:30Absolutely. And I'm in the same camp.
- 41:31I did find the quote he said when they asked him about it, he
- 41:37said I haven't seen what Washington said, but he said he
- 41:40made a good pitch. I didn't get it down.
- 41:42I've got to try to put a bat on it.
- 41:44That's it. That's it.
- 41:46So, so like, what are we, what are we talking about here, these
- 41:49people talking about the ball being 64 feet off the plate, Not
- 41:54the case. It was clearly manageable enough
- 41:57that that he indicates that he could have gotten a bat on it so
- 42:04or that he could at least try to put a bat on it.
- 42:06Which is all you can ask for in a situation like that.
- 42:08Because you know that you're not always going to have it in the
- 42:10zone and that's going to sometimes trickle out out of the
- 42:13zone a little bit, few balls off the plate.
- 42:14You still got to try to put a bat on it.
- 42:17We you. You've taken the Auggie Garrido
- 42:20exit off for a while now, yeah? It's been a minute since we
- 42:24dropped the Auggie audio. I I think for those unfamiliar,
- 42:31there's just certain coaches that have different types of
- 42:34expectations and there's certain coaches that require a pursuit
- 42:40of perfection in in certain things.
- 42:42Specifically when it comes to fundamentals there there's just
- 42:49old school mentalities. You know when you talk to a
- 42:51scout, if he walks away from a game saying I'm not interested
- 42:54in this high schooler because he walked off the mound or he
- 42:58walked off the field in between innings, you know, it's it's
- 43:02Patrick, not Patrick. Coach Corbin with Vanderbilt.
- 43:08I can't remember his name talks about how he didn't.
- 43:11Tim Corbin, thank you. Didn't recruit a kid because he
- 43:15asked for a Gatorade from his mom in the second inning and
- 43:18then didn't say thank you. Afterwards.
- 43:19He got up and left. There's just certain baseball
- 43:23coaches out there that they that they can look at those nuances
- 43:27that you mentioned. They can have a finger on the
- 43:30pulse a little bit differently than just results and stats.
- 43:34We can look at the game in different ways and it doesn't
- 43:37mean Ron Washington is wrong. He's trying to fix this dumpster
- 43:44fire of an organization and correct things and then if he's
- 43:47asking players to have accountability, that's what it's
- 43:52going to take. And I can guarantee that Ron
- 43:55Washington probably had a a voice in trading for Guillerme
- 44:01and getting him onto this roster because of the prior
- 44:03relationship in Atlanta. So to sit here and judge from a
- 44:0910,000 foot view, it's it's not cool.
- 44:12We don't know what's going on behind that clubhouse.
- 44:14We don't know if they've already made-up.
- 44:15We don't know. But what I do know is that Ron
- 44:18Washington has forgotten more about baseball than any of us
- 44:22talking or listening to this podcast at the moment has ever
- 44:26learned. So let's back it down a little
- 44:30bit. Let my man do what he does and
- 44:34give it some time to fix this script.
- 44:37That is the Los Angeles, CA Angels of Los Angeles, LA.
- 44:42Anaheim, CA. LA Yeah, Angeles.
- 44:46Putting a bow on it that that tweet I just texted.
- 44:49You people are are finally showing up on my thread in
- 44:53support of the same exact things we're saying.
- 44:58Yes, Sir. Like, that's the kind of, and if
- 45:01you don't know what I'm talking about, head over to my Twitter,
- 45:03you'll see my my post about the whole Washington thing.
- 45:06And it's in the replies. But there's there's just people
- 45:09talking about how, like if you didn't, if you didn't make an
- 45:12effort, if you didn't go all out, that you're going to hear
- 45:15it after the game and somebody sent a picture of a kid just
- 45:19going. All and and you can tell like
- 45:22you can tell immediately. If a hitter seems to be in a
- 45:27good position to make a bunt that was a Late Show and that
- 45:32was an ass out half attempt swipe down at it.
- 45:40You knew that was coming and and it needs to be performed in a
- 45:43better way. You're a professional athlete
- 45:45and that is something that you know in that tweet like you said
- 45:48it's a high schooler like that. We've taught we've been taught
- 45:51this for a while. Whether you practice it is a
- 45:54different conversation. Whether the game needs more of
- 45:56it or less of it is a different conversation.
- 46:00But either way, that was not a good enough effort on a very
- 46:05much definition do or die play. Well said, Speaking of effort,
- 46:13Junghu Lee, in an effort to make a catch on Sunday, hurt his
- 46:17shoulder. And we just found out, I want to
- 46:21say yesterday post MRI that or I'm guessing it was him, Yeah,
- 46:31MRI revealed that they were structural damage to the
- 46:34shoulder. So now he is going to be getting
- 46:40a believe a second look on Thursday.
- 46:45So one can assume that he's going to be out for a little bit
- 46:50of time which is kind of a it's kind of a shame.
- 46:52You know he was, I think he was settling in fairly nicely for a
- 46:58a newbie to the to the Major League scene.
- 47:00He was hitting 262 with two homers, 8 ribbies.
- 47:04Had a a little little low on the OPS 641, but defensively he had
- 47:11been doing well. Absurd.
- 47:13I I genuinely believe he could have won a Gold Glove this year
- 47:18from from what I've seen. Yeah, sorry, I I understood him
- 47:21there. He's been, he's been great.
- 47:22Defensively, yeah. Hence the effort, right?
- 47:26Like, I don't know, man. Like, I that's that's Griffey to
- 47:29me. That's like, that's Tory Hunter
- 47:31to me. That's like how center fielders
- 47:33should play. I don't think we see it enough
- 47:35anymore, but oh man, I don't. I think it depends, right?
- 47:40It depends if it's a labrum issue, it depends if it's a a
- 47:43rotator cuff issue. Sometimes you can rehab,
- 47:48sometimes you can tighten it up. Rehab is still from what I've
- 47:53like looked into and read is still like a four to six week
- 47:56thing best case scenario. Surgery is more like a four to
- 47:59six month thing. And if it's bad enough to wear
- 48:02surgeries, you know, in the picture, I think he's done for
- 48:05the year, which is tough because I like him.
- 48:09I like watching him. He's he's insane, man.
- 48:12He flies around and like for that to even be like he got
- 48:16leather on that ball, I don't know if you could tell like he
- 48:19hit off the pinky of the leather of his glove and and hit off the
- 48:23top of the wall, like to even get into a position to
- 48:26potentially make that play just speaks to what he's capable of
- 48:30as a defender. But man, that's really tough
- 48:34news. I mean, like I like I said,
- 48:37offensively he wasn't bringing as much to the table, if really
- 48:40anything. But there is something to be
- 48:43said and take it from a guy who had the fortune of watching
- 48:46Jackie Bradley hold it down in Center for however many years he
- 48:51was in Boston. There's something to be said for
- 48:54a guy that regardless how he does offensively, how regardless
- 48:57what output he brings to the table, knowing that there
- 49:02there's probably a a fraction of a percentage point number of
- 49:07baseballs that are hit to the outfield that he's not going to
- 49:11be able to get to. And I feel like I I feel like
- 49:14Lee is one of the guys that it doesn't really matter where the
- 49:18ball's hit or how hard. Like you were saying, the fact
- 49:21he's he's going to at least put himself in a position to get a
- 49:25glove on it. And that that carries a lot of
- 49:28weight, especially for your other outfielders who who are
- 49:35around as well as your staff. Like knowing that if there's a
- 49:38ball that you see, if you're if you're yanking your neck back,
- 49:42but then you're reminded, oh wait, I got a guy out there and
- 49:45not only do I have a guy, I've got a guy that's more than
- 49:48likely already camped under the ball.
- 49:49There's a lot of value in that. So losing him defensively for
- 49:54any amount of time is is going to suck.
- 49:56But we can only hope that it'll be it'll be minimal.
- 50:01And it was like such a perfect spot on the wall to like the
- 50:04where it had the pad and then below the pad was the chain link
- 50:07fence. It looked like his elbow, like
- 50:10hit the pad 1st and then like pushed it in.
- 50:13It just a weird fluky thing. Yeah, sucks.
- 50:20Yeah, not fun. What is fun, however, is having
- 50:28been able to watch these arms that we're about to discuss the
- 50:36first one, maybe not as not as fun for me, I will say, although
- 50:43I'm not surprised, I had a feeling something like this was
- 50:46going to happen. I I knew that the second he had
- 50:52a change of scenery that he was going to return to a Cy Young
- 50:55caliber pitcher, and that is Christopher Allen Sale of the
- 51:00Atlanta Braves. Tuesday night's start went 7
- 51:03deep, only allowed two hits, no earned runs, no walks and nine
- 51:08KS. What's more impressive though is
- 51:12what he's done on the season. Eight games or eight starts,
- 51:15rather six and one 254 ERA, 61 KS.
- 51:21A 0.89 WHIP, 11 KS per nine 1 1/2 wore over 49.2 or 49 2/3
- 51:28innings pitch. What's even more impressive than
- 51:31that, however, has been his last three last three start stretch,
- 51:3618 innings, 28 K's, only one earned run allowed, which
- 51:40amounts to an ERA of .50. So the question needs to be
- 51:46asked, is Chris Sale in the Sion conversation?
- 51:52Kind of has to be. Kind of, has to be, at least
- 51:56this early the the the strikeouts jump out to me big
- 52:01time when Chris Sale cause, like the deceptions already there.
- 52:07It's a lot of a lot of lankiness, a lot of elbows.
- 52:10A weird slot hides the ball pitches on one side of the
- 52:13rubber, like pitches behind left-handed hitters.
- 52:16Almost like all of that. But when the swing and miss is
- 52:21also included in that, that's how you know he's back.
- 52:30And when you almost can like leave the spotlight and the
- 52:35pressure and like the the stigma of like, oh, we traded for this
- 52:40guy and we extended him. And you know, he's helped us get
- 52:43rings and like all the stuff that he had in Boston to have a
- 52:47reset button, to have a a, a staff where you don't need to be
- 52:54the guy to just figure out like how to do this again, I think
- 53:00everyone predicted this. I think there was a lot of
- 53:03people that had him as comeback player of the year.
- 53:06There's a lot of people that knew that Anthopolis constantly
- 53:10finds diamonds in the rough. I'm just, I'm not surprised.
- 53:17I'm not at all surprised. It's cool to see and it's like,
- 53:21nicer to see for me now, 'cause I'm like I I'm OK with seeing
- 53:25him succeed in a different uniform for you.
- 53:29I feel like this sting hurts that much more.
- 53:33Yeah, I mean, I know I make the the connection of fantasy
- 53:37baseball a lot, but the way I think about something like this
- 53:40is you get rid of a guy. Perfect example.
- 53:43That's the guy we're going to cover here In just a minute.
- 53:45Dylan Cease. In fact, I believe I had traded
- 53:47him your way. If I recall Dylan cease a guy
- 53:51that coming into the season I wasn't terribly high on.
- 53:55I thought, you know, maybe maybe people thinking that his last
- 54:00year in Chicago was maybe the rule and not the exception.
- 54:04Like maybe we just saw that one extremely solid campaign out of
- 54:09him, but maybe that he he will struggle to recapture that.
- 54:14I kind of adopted that line of thinking.
- 54:16Apparently that was a mistake on my part.
- 54:18But you you look to maybe capitalize while you can because
- 54:22you're just not as high on this individual anymore.
- 54:24So you ship them out and then they go on to do great things,
- 54:27which is what Dylan sees has done.
- 54:28That's kind of I feel like we're the Red Sox are at they're like
- 54:31we've we've we've arrived at the end of this road like we need to
- 54:35get what we can for this before things get even worse.
- 54:38And then he goes on to have the start that it's happened and
- 54:41who's to say I'm not I'm not wishing anything upon him.
- 54:44But reminder it is still early We we've seen this happen
- 54:48before. All I'm saying though is the
- 54:50start that he is off to right now it's vintage Chris Sale and
- 54:53it's it's I mean Red Sox fan or not it's it's cool to see.
- 54:57I mean that's you love to see a guy like that have a bounce
- 55:00back. Yeah, as a baseball fan, you're
- 55:02like you. You knew like anybody that sit
- 55:05here and says that like you, you.
- 55:08I would kill for like one more Cy Young caliber season from
- 55:11Stephen Strasburg right before it was all said and done.
- 55:14Like to sit here and say like we're done with Chris Sale, like
- 55:18we're fine with his career ending this way.
- 55:20Nah, I don't buy it. Like this is what we were
- 55:23wanting to see. It's it's good for baseball.
- 55:25It's good for him. It's good for stories like him.
- 55:28Second chances, third chances, fourth chances, whatever you
- 55:31want to chalk it up as. It's good to see him back.
- 55:35It's good to see him doing what he's doing, you know?
- 55:40It's just annoying that it's what the Braves seem to always
- 55:45do. And yeah, that's what it is, I
- 55:50guess. I don't know that.
- 55:52Good for him, though. Weirdo.
- 55:55Yeah, we're talking about some dudes here and I promise you, I
- 55:58said last episode, I said I had some pictures in yeah, had a
- 56:01little bit of a a busy weekend. So we had to run with some some
- 56:05broader storylines. But I knew there were some guys
- 56:08that needed some love. Some we needed to have some
- 56:11conversations about. And I told you, I said we'll
- 56:13we'll get to some dudes. We'll get to some numbers and
- 56:15here we are talking about it. Although like you said it's
- 56:18we're we're heavy on the arms here.
- 56:19In fact it's exclusively ARMS next next in line.
- 56:23Seth Lugo. Yeah.
- 56:26One of the most underrated least talked about arms I think right
- 56:32now in all of baseball he's sporting a six, one or six in
- 56:37one record. He's got a an ERA of 166 with
- 56:41which is 4th best in all of baseball and it's the best in
- 56:45the American League. He's got 48 KS, a .96 WHIP and
- 56:49opponents are hitting two O 6 off of him, Which for context if
- 56:53you're curious, like where does that rank the guy that we talked
- 56:56about very recently, Shota Imanaga.
- 56:59He's got the same opponent batting average.
- 57:01So that kind of puts into perspective where Seth Lugo's at
- 57:05right now with Oba. And this is all over 59 and 2/3
- 57:10innings, which is most in all of baseball.
- 57:14I think that's noteworthy in and of itself.
- 57:18Something I think is interesting here.
- 57:19A little nugget I've got on Seth Lugo.
- 57:22His Cape or nine right now is 724, which is 59th in baseball.
- 57:32So what does that tell us? He's working effectively.
- 57:39He's working efficiently, He's pitching to contact.
- 57:41He's limiting traffic as the WHIP shows.
- 57:44He's he's managing base runners well.
- 57:47He's doing all of this without blowing it by it, which
- 57:50ironically his last outing. I think he had a career high 12
- 57:54KS so. Yeah.
- 57:56He wanted to maybe mixed up a little bit there with that
- 57:58narrative, but All in all across across his 2024 campaign thus
- 58:03far it's he's been a little bit on the lower end in terms of
- 58:08cage per nine, so. I I want to just pat the Royals
- 58:16organization in front office on the back.
- 58:20I want to shake your hand. Just to just to do this dude is
- 58:24like to turn things around to find a guy and I was looking we
- 58:31are know we know the name Seth Lugo.
- 58:33Like we know it. We we're used to this name.
- 58:36I don't think I didn't realize until now.
- 58:43He's only been like a full time starter for two seasons in his
- 58:49career. 2017, he made eighteen starts.
- 58:54That was the highest of his career.
- 58:56He went to the bullpen pretty much primarily for the next five
- 58:59years. And then last year of San Diego,
- 59:01he had 26 starts in a 357 ERA with 146 innings.
- 59:08For the Royals organization to be like, let's try it, let's
- 59:14grab this 34 year old and let's slide him into the rotation and
- 59:18let's see what he can do. It's unbelievable.
- 59:23It's unbelievable. I will refuse to talk about Seth
- 59:33Lugo or any other Royals pitcher right now without bringing up
- 59:37the fact that Sally Perez has on a dime, flipped his his catching
- 59:44style, his framing. He has to be mentioned in this
- 59:50to be a a veteran that's been in the game that long to switch
- 59:53things around and do what he's doing it.
- 59:55It speaks volumes to what it's happening with the pitching
- 59:58staff. Seth Lugo, obviously a huge
- 1:00:01benefit from it. But yeah, you you hit
- 1:00:03everything, man. Pitch the contact, trust the
- 1:00:06really good defense behind them. And it's like, it's it's fun to
- 1:00:11see. It's fun to see.
- 1:00:14Another just fun story, dude. Like that no one expected.
- 1:00:19No one had this on the bingo card.
- 1:00:21Good for Seth. Again, it's early, but my take
- 1:00:28on the Royals making the the wild card.
- 1:00:30I love it. It's looking good.
- 1:00:32It's looking not not looking too bad, just the postseason in
- 1:00:35general. Not not looking too bad for the
- 1:00:37old Kansas City Royals. Speaking of the American League
- 1:00:41Central Tariq Scoobel, another name We need to talk about
- 1:00:44another name that's is getting getting a fair amount of
- 1:00:49respect, but I don't think quite enough.
- 1:00:52He's 5 and O on the year. He's got a 2O2 ERA, 40 Nines
- 1:00:56inning, 49 innings pitched. He's racked up 60 strikeouts
- 1:01:00with a WHIP of 857. That's a .857.
- 1:01:08He's got a Major League leading 2O3 FIP and he touched just for
- 1:01:16just for notes purposes, he touched 100 for the first time
- 1:01:19in his career on Sunday. According to Codify, Codify,
- 1:01:23he's got the most F4 among Major League pitchers since August 1st
- 1:01:26at 4.1 and he is the current American League Cy Young
- 1:01:33favorite and Nate's pre season pick.
- 1:01:38It's true. It's looking good there.
- 1:01:41If anybody wants to, I'm looking at his Baseball Savant page
- 1:01:44right now. It it's just everything's lit up
- 1:01:47in red. Everything's lit up in red.
- 1:01:49This guy's absurd, man. Expected batting average.
- 1:01:54Are you looking at Tariq Scoobler or are you looking at
- 1:01:56Mason Miller? I'm looking at Scoobler, baby.
- 1:01:58I'm looking at Scoobler. Why?
- 1:02:01No, Same thing. Mason Miller.
- 1:02:02Is just all red. Yeah, it's just a red block.
- 1:02:05But the the expected batting average, the expected the Wolba
- 1:02:11and the expected Wolba both like top three ten 8% in the league.
- 1:02:17K percentage is top ten in the league.
- 1:02:20Walk percentage is top 8% in the league.
- 1:02:23Like. He's a true four pitch pitcher
- 1:02:28like the four seam. The sinker obviously is what he
- 1:02:32works off of a lot. But like the change up and
- 1:02:34slider are big time in the mix. This is pitching.
- 1:02:40This is pitching. This man is disgusting, super,
- 1:02:48super fun to watch man. Yeah, go look at the Go look at
- 1:02:55the Baseball Savant page stud. Go win that Cy Young for me, I
- 1:03:01love being like one for 30 on my Hot Take prediction episodes,
- 1:03:05You know what I mean? You'd be wrong for most of them,
- 1:03:08but. For the record I think in a name
- 1:03:13we'll we've we've we've touched on a little bit and we'll
- 1:03:17probably have to revisit here soon.
- 1:03:19But Zach Wheeler, I believe is the favorite for the National
- 1:03:22League at the moment. For some, for some outlets.
- 1:03:27And I pretty sure that's who I had coming out of the National
- 1:03:31League preseason episode. Who'da.
- 1:03:33Who'da thought. Who'da thunk it?
- 1:03:36Moving along here talking about National League Cy Young
- 1:03:40candidates Dylan Cease just rocking a 53245 yard a 55
- 1:03:46innings pitched over or, I'm sorry, 68 KS over 55 innings
- 1:03:50pitched. Those 68 strike cuts are third
- 1:03:52most in all of baseball. He's got a .782 WHIP, which is
- 1:03:55second best in baseball. We've we've talked about
- 1:04:00different elements of of these guys, some guys pitching a
- 1:04:03contact some guys being efficient, some guys using pitch
- 1:04:07selection. Dylan Cease strikeout is the is
- 1:04:12the word that comes to mind here.
- 1:04:13Eight of his nine starts this season, he's had seven plus
- 1:04:16strikeouts, which may not sound like a lot, but when you think
- 1:04:20about some of the names out there, who you would expect to
- 1:04:24have something like that, but don't.
- 1:04:27Yeah. It's it's it's tip your cap
- 1:04:32worthy. 4 Out of his last five starts, he's had eight plus KS
- 1:04:38and on his May 8th start, which I believe was his start before
- 1:04:41the last, yeah, 12 strikeouts versus the Cubs.
- 1:04:48Different, different and different style too that he's
- 1:04:51primarily a two pitch guy. He's basically just fastball
- 1:04:55slider, that's that's majority of what he's throwing and it's
- 1:05:03disgusting. And he's also in like a, you
- 1:05:06know fairly hitter friendly Petco.
- 1:05:08So yeah, that's that's something else to say too.
- 1:05:12So. I hate that I traded him.
- 1:05:17Hate that I traded him, but. Yeah, that was you.
- 1:05:21I traded him before this. This breakout campaign really
- 1:05:26got going. But that's that's my thing and
- 1:05:28I'm not going to be like a Debbie Downer here, but like as
- 1:05:30a two pitch guy like you, you could see one of those getting
- 1:05:37you know, having an issue. There's reason for caution,
- 1:05:40right like and we've seen caution before and and we've
- 1:05:43seen things to be cautious about in the past.
- 1:05:46So I tried to sell high. We'll see if it continues.
- 1:05:50I hope it does, but at the same time, since I traded him, I'm OK
- 1:05:54if it doesn't. I got J Ram out of the deal.
- 1:05:57If anyone's curious, I got Jose Ramirez out of the deal, so and
- 1:06:01the rest of the pitching staff looks OK for me right now.
- 1:06:09Next, Next we got to talk about name.
- 1:06:11I've already mentioned here Mason Miller, and we won't.
- 1:06:14We won't keep it too long because I know we got to get out
- 1:06:16of here soon. But did we save the best for
- 1:06:21last year? I think we did talk about an
- 1:06:24exciting arm on the year. He's sporting a 9.9 eights ERA,
- 1:06:33but that's not even what people really care about.
- 1:06:35Honestly, nobody cares about how much, how many runs this guy
- 1:06:37gives up. They care about how many triple
- 1:06:40digit fastballs he's going to shove down your throat.
- 1:06:45He's got 38 strikeouts on the year, which according to Danny
- 1:06:49Vietti, leads the Oakland A's this season as a reliever.
- 1:06:58He's a reliever, mind you. He's only pitched 18 and a
- 1:07:02third's innings and a third innings.
- 1:07:06Paul Blackburn is second with 36 / 46 innings.
- 1:07:13Disgusting. He's faced 67 batters and struck
- 1:07:17out 38 of them, which for those of you doing the math at home,
- 1:07:21that's 57% of the batters he's faced.
- 1:07:25Mason Miller has struck out 57% of the batters he's faced.
- 1:07:32He's yet to give up a home run. Regarding his triple digit
- 1:07:37fastballs that I mentioned earlier, he's thrown 54 more
- 1:07:41than any other pitcher this season.
- 1:07:47His past 11 appearances he's he's thrown out 13 and a thirds,
- 1:07:51giving up zero runs, had 30 KS, one hit and two walks.
- 1:07:59That's stupid. Oh, and by the way, he's now the
- 1:08:02Rookie of the Year favorite at coming out of the American
- 1:08:04League. Yeah, again, you mentioned
- 1:08:08earlier the the baseball's Von Paige is absurd.
- 1:08:13Exit velocity ranks in the top 6% of the league.
- 1:08:20The expected batting average is top 1%, expecting slug, expected
- 1:08:24slug percentage is top 1%, woba top 1%, ex woba, top 1%.
- 1:08:32Do we know what ex wobacon is? Is that like, is that on base
- 1:08:37percentage based on like contact, expected contact made
- 1:08:41or you know what I mean that's? Yeah.
- 1:08:43Yeah, that sounds right. That sounds right.
- 1:08:45That's also top 1% By the way. Hard hit percentage is that 20.8
- 1:08:49is top 1% K percentage, 56.7% like you mentioned, top 1% in
- 1:08:58baseball. This kid is ridiculous.
- 1:09:03Great comments saying that he's going to be highly sought after.
- 1:09:06I think I read something that the the A's have yet to get
- 1:09:10anything near the asking price, anything near it.
- 1:09:16So to sit here and say that like the Dodgers or or, you know, the
- 1:09:20Yankees or whatever, bullpen is a need to step in and and go
- 1:09:23snag this guy, be prepared to pay up.
- 1:09:29And I don't know if anyone will. Yeah, yes, I agree with you.
- 1:09:34I I think it's going to it's going to require a haul.
- 1:09:37But we can't. I we, I think we have to be
- 1:09:42careful in equating the the demands of a Mason Miller to a
- 1:09:49guy like Juan Soto because and I'm not saying people are making
- 1:09:52those comparisons but I feel like as the season goes on as
- 1:09:55Mason Miller gets talked about more it's going to be like the
- 1:09:57Oakland A's are going to be asking for the moon and it's
- 1:10:01like yeah, we get it. This guy he's legit.
- 1:10:05I'm not. I'm not questioning that.
- 1:10:07But also like, we have to keep in mind that we're dealing with
- 1:10:10a closer and not a guy like a Juan Soto who's going to be out
- 1:10:15there for 160 games every season.
- 1:10:17Yeah. Who and who also is like a
- 1:10:19generational talent, depending upon who you ask.
- 1:10:22Yeah. So I agree.
- 1:10:24I I'm with you and I, I, I said all that not to disagree with
- 1:10:27what you're saying. I'm just saying like I I want us
- 1:10:29to be careful and realistic about like what is?
- 1:10:33What is this package really going to look like?
- 1:10:34And. Yeah, especially when you see
- 1:10:36arms dropping like flies all over Elite, right?
- 1:10:41And especially when you're talking about the Oakland A's
- 1:10:42that have given away plenty of players for bags of chips and
- 1:10:47bucket of balls. So.
- 1:10:49And when you consider like I've seen the Orioles thrown around
- 1:10:53as a as a trade destination and I'm like, OK, so we just
- 1:10:56throwing Felix Batista the to the wolves here And I like, I
- 1:10:59know he's out, but what? You would give up, yeah.
- 1:11:03Right. That it just speaks to like, OK,
- 1:11:05the Orioles thought they they felt like this was their guy.
- 1:11:08And most most fans will probably tell you that he still is their
- 1:11:11guy when whenever he returns. But it's like, OK, if that's how
- 1:11:15we're if that's how we're treating or handling A lockdown
- 1:11:21guy who we thought a fan base was just beyond attached to,
- 1:11:26then why would a team or like why, why are we assigning so
- 1:11:30much value to a guy like Mason Miller, who, yeah, is a
- 1:11:33different pitcher than a guy like Felix Bautista.
- 1:11:36But again he doesn't he doesn't hold the same Just, you know
- 1:11:41like baseball values as a as a as a guy like Juan Soto who has
- 1:11:46proven it year after year after year and is a is a generational
- 1:11:51talent. Like, I I don't know.
- 1:11:52I just want to make sure we're not, we're not getting into
- 1:11:54those weeds, that's all. I do concur and I forgot what I
- 1:12:01was going to say. If you did have a team, I I
- 1:12:03wanted to ask you if there. Was a team.
- 1:12:05That's what I was going to say. It's going to be the.
- 1:12:06I think it's either the Dodgers, the Orioles.
- 1:12:08If if we get to pick one team from each league, it's it's a
- 1:12:12team that's log jam at the top and has plenty of stuff to move
- 1:12:16in their farm. Those two teams come to mind.
- 1:12:20Can I throw out an option that I kind of like under?
- 1:12:26The radar. Then trading for trading them to
- 1:12:30a team that already has a couple closers in the mix, like the
- 1:12:33Orioles. Or, you know, like bona fide
- 1:12:38options. The Texas Rangers.
- 1:12:42Yeah, Leclerc has been. Kirby Yates I think on paper
- 1:12:46right now is is their guy both those.
- 1:12:49Yeah, both those guys have been in shambles, I think.
- 1:12:52Leclerc's had a rough go of it and I I've seen Spores name
- 1:12:59thrown around as a potential option down the road.
- 1:13:01But I'm like, I don't know. I don't know if I necessarily
- 1:13:03see and we. I know he closed out the World
- 1:13:06Series and. You know, maybe, maybe
- 1:13:07Diamondbacks. Maybe Diamondbacks.
- 1:13:09Is Seawald still out? That I think more gets hung up
- 1:13:15with the farm. I I think it's less about their
- 1:13:18needs and more about what they're able.
- 1:13:20To if they're able to afford. But I don't know, man.
- 1:13:25It'll be fun, honestly. Like it sounds.
- 1:13:28It sounds kind of lame, but I kind of like watching them on
- 1:13:30The Age right now because it's like, OK.
- 1:13:33There's a reason to watch them, Yeah, like.
- 1:13:35It's kind of like the it's kind of like the Lamborghini under
- 1:13:38the the carport meme like in the trailer house or under like the
- 1:13:42the trailer park whatever. Like that's kind of what we're
- 1:13:44dealing with here with with Mason Miller and the A's.
- 1:13:46So it for for comedic purposes that I would say I don't, I
- 1:13:51don't mind them being on the A's right now.
- 1:13:54But anyway. Should we get a quick A's check?
- 1:13:59Has that game started yet? We don't need to talk about it.
- 1:14:02It's 2 nothing Astros in the 4th.
- 1:14:06We can just keep talking and we can just catch the end of the
- 1:14:10game and. An hour and a half, Yeah.
- 1:14:12Another hour and a half? No, Let's talk about Jack
- 1:14:14Leiter. And then we'll be close to
- 1:14:16getting out of here. We've gone deep here, Jack
- 1:14:20Leiter. Poor Kidman.
- 1:14:23Tell you what, poor kid. Yeah.
- 1:14:28He's O and one on the season he's he's had three starts and
- 1:14:32over those three starts he's accumulated an ERA of 1639 / 9
- 1:14:37and a third innings. He has just seven KS.
- 1:14:41He has a whopping WHIP of 2.571. And he is he is racked up a -1
- 1:14:49WAR. His 1639 ERA is the third
- 1:14:53highest ERA in Major League Baseball history. 3 pitchers,
- 1:14:57first three career starts going back to 1920.
- 1:15:03It's tough, man. And it's not like he's faced
- 1:15:07powerhouses. No disrespect to these teams,
- 1:15:09but like the Tigers, the A's and the and the guardians,
- 1:15:12respectively, If is what he's gotten, it's tough, man.
- 1:15:20I mean, the Guardians are a good team, but like, they're not
- 1:15:22going to, they're not going to go mashing baseballs around the
- 1:15:25around the. Diamond.
- 1:15:26Yeah, yeah, dude, just go get right.
- 1:15:34He's it's tough dude. He's undersized.
- 1:15:37He doesn't have that power arm. Then if you're not spotting up,
- 1:15:41like that's not it's not going to work.
- 1:15:43It's not going to work. So just go get right.
- 1:15:48It's unfortunate, but a little reality check, a little bit of a
- 1:15:52a gut check. I don't know, talk to dad more,
- 1:15:58figure out what's going on. He'll be fine.
- 1:16:01He'll be fine. I hope we need we need Jack
- 1:16:07Clyde to write, man. If like it, that'd be a good
- 1:16:09addition to the it'd be fun. The youth pitchers Arsenal.
- 1:16:15If you will. That that currently exists
- 1:16:20around the league because there's some there's some bright
- 1:16:22futures ahead and some some bright futures that are already
- 1:16:26under way I would say in regards to to the these some of these
- 1:16:31young names. But let's hope let's hope he he
- 1:16:35he turns around I think some some good conversations some
- 1:16:38good mechanical analysis and just maybe maybe some mental
- 1:16:42analysis you never know like we talked about you never know
- 1:16:45what's really going on under the under the hood.
- 1:16:47So hopefully gets it right. Last, last but not least, here.
- 1:16:53Weekend series to watch and we'll get you out of here.
- 1:16:56Starting off for me, I am going to be watching the Padres take
- 1:17:02on the Atlanta Braves this weekend if if I have the chance,
- 1:17:09which I think I will. It'll be a busy weekend, but
- 1:17:11I'll be able to put up, shut up, shut up.
- 1:17:14MLB app on the phone, man. You can watch anywhere.
- 1:17:17Not not to make it an ad, but Yep, that's that's a beautiful
- 1:17:21thing, man. You be on the toilet, you can be
- 1:17:22watching baseball. It's a beautiful thing.
- 1:17:24Don't tell anybody, but I absolutely put it up near the
- 1:17:27speedometer when I'm driving, so yeah.
- 1:17:34I'm going to refrain from commenting for for legal
- 1:17:36purposes. Game one, you got Matt Waldron
- 1:17:39versus Max free. That's at 7:20 PM.
- 1:17:42Game two, you've got you, Darvish.
- 1:17:45Oh, game one is Monday. I'm sorry.
- 1:17:47Friday, Matt Waldron versus Max free 720.
- 1:17:50Game two, you've got you. Darvish versus Bryce Elder at
- 1:17:537:15 Eastern. Game three, you've got Randy
- 1:17:57Vasquez versus Ronaldo Lopez at 7:00 PM.
- 1:18:00That's Sunday night baseball. And game four, I don't care.
- 1:18:07It's on a Monday, so no excuse. It's on a Monday at 12:20 PM
- 1:18:12Eastern. I don't care what what fan
- 1:18:15you're or like what team you're a fan of, you need to be
- 1:18:18watching this game. Game four on Monday between the
- 1:18:21Padres and Braves features Dylan Cease and Chris Sale.
- 1:18:27Are you kidding me? Yes, that's amazing.
- 1:18:31That's 9:00 at my at my time. I'm not getting any work done.
- 1:18:36You're going to be waking up to this.
- 1:18:38Yeah, it's going to be great. What a day.
- 1:18:41That's my weekend series of watch.
- 1:18:43Mine is not nearly as understandable or fun, but my
- 1:18:49logic behind this, this is the this is the potential script
- 1:18:58flip series for the Cincinnati Reds, and I hate to say it, but
- 1:19:08like this four-game set against the Dodgers, they haven't won a
- 1:19:15series. I think I've looked back.
- 1:19:16They haven't won a series. It's been seven straight series
- 1:19:19of either tie or loss. They haven't won since like
- 1:19:23April 19th or 20th or something like that.
- 1:19:26Are you saying this is a statement series?
- 1:19:29For the Cincinnati Reds, this is a series where like if you can
- 1:19:33put together a good Series, A complete series against a World
- 1:19:37Series favorite, this could flip your season.
- 1:19:43They're two and eight in their last ten games.
- 1:19:45They're eight games back in the division.
- 1:19:47They're seven games under 500. They're -3 and run differential
- 1:19:54like nothing says this is a match up worth watching.
- 1:19:57What I'm saying is this is a match up that could ignite
- 1:20:02something. If the Reds can just figure it
- 1:20:05out if they can do well and I don't mean split, I need to see
- 1:20:09them win this series. And watch them become the team
- 1:20:13that everyone thought they were going to be.
- 1:20:15There's a lot of people that were high on the Reds becoming
- 1:20:17coming into the season so four-game.
- 1:20:21Set. I miss it.
- 1:20:22Did you Did you mention where this is at?
- 1:20:24Is it in? It's.
- 1:20:25In LA it is in California. Starts Thursday so manana today
- 1:20:31maybe for some of you four-game set.
- 1:20:34Don't know who's thrown to game one for for the Reds, but
- 1:20:37they're going against Glass now so that's a tough look.
- 1:20:41Frankie Montas going Friday for the Reds against James Paxton
- 1:20:46Saturday. You've got Graham Ashcraft going
- 1:20:49against Walker Buehler and Hunter Green against Yamamoto.
- 1:20:54That's Sunday. I would.
- 1:20:55I would try and lock that in. There you go.
- 1:20:59That's an afternoon game, 1:00 Pacific.
- 1:21:03Try to catch that one. That's a good one.
- 1:21:05But this is you know, Walker Buehler coming back hasn't quite
- 1:21:09settled in, hasn't gotten built up.
- 1:21:11James Paxton can have some clunkers every once in a while.
- 1:21:15Come on, Reds. Come on.
- 1:21:19You can. You can thank us.
- 1:21:21We've got your Sunday and Monday appointment television planned
- 1:21:25out for you. You didn't even.
- 1:21:26Otherwise, you're busy, you. Didn't even have to look around.
- 1:21:29We got it for you Sunday, Reds, I found.
- 1:21:31I found a secret. If you're a couple, if you're
- 1:21:36married or you know, significant other.
- 1:21:38If you're one of those where like you use Sundays like a
- 1:21:41cleaning chore day, just offer to clean the kitchen with the TV
- 1:21:49right there. If it's within view or audio
- 1:21:54view that doesn't work, audio distance, just say, hey babe, I
- 1:21:59got the kitchen, take your time, wipe down the stove, get inside
- 1:22:05that stove if you need to. Get the counters, wipe down the
- 1:22:10cabinets, get the fridge. You can get a couple innings in
- 1:22:13now. Get the brownie points and the
- 1:22:15baseball just a piece. Of advice there, just something
- 1:22:19I've I've since discovered. How about that?
- 1:22:22Look at you, man. You've been you've been married
- 1:22:25for for what, like a month, and you're already a pro?
- 1:22:28That's right. That's right.
- 1:22:30How about it? All right, that'll do it.
- 1:22:33Unless you got anything else, no.
- 1:22:36Stick. Stick with my boy Ron.
- 1:22:38Wash. Relax on that.
- 1:22:39OK, That's what I'm that's I'm going to bed tonight knowing
- 1:22:42that Ron Washington in baseball means baseball's better.
- 1:22:46So just relax and don't go chasing curveballs.
- 1:22:52Love you all and it's always looking forward to talking more
- 1:22:54baseball with you guys. Soon.
- 1:22:55Until next time, stay filthy.
