- 0:00Speaker 1: Big Ten Media Days and the Huskers are up on
- 0:02Speaker 1: the stage today, Seano, what are your five, three or
- 0:07Speaker 1: four or five key issues associated with Nebraska football. Do
- 0:12Speaker 1: you think the Big Ten media will challenge Matt Rule
- 0:14Speaker 1: on today?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Well, I just think the approach for Nebraska going in
- 0:18Speaker 2: the year four. It's been a very quiet offseason where
- 0:22Speaker 2: we just haven't heard or seen a lot of this team.
- 0:25Speaker 2: And they've added some key place pieces, some key coordinators,
- 0:28Speaker 2: some assistant coaches, so this is very much a different
- 0:33Speaker 2: team and a lot of key areas and they've been
- 0:35Speaker 2: real quiet about it. Obviously, there's just to get Matt
- 0:39Speaker 2: Word's final word on the Mkai Nelson situation. We know
- 0:43Speaker 2: Troy Dannen said yesterday that they're not expecting any there
- 0:47Speaker 2: won't be any athletic department suspension from Mikai Nelson's situation
- 0:51Speaker 2: that happened in Key West, Florida. That's a big one,
- 0:53Speaker 2: you know. Then there's just a number of rosters things
- 0:56Speaker 2: you want to get caught up on and just get
- 0:59Speaker 2: a feel for this team because they will start practice
- 1:03Speaker 2: on Wednesday of next week. As Matt Rule begins his
- 1:07Speaker 2: fourth year here at Nebraska.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Now is as we've seen in the evolution of college
- 1:11Speaker 1: football over the last three or four years, especially the
- 1:14Speaker 1: ramp up of NIL and the transfer portal. Everybody is
- 1:18Speaker 1: going into the transfer portal, at least a lot of
- 1:20Speaker 1: schools are going into the transfer portal. Where is Nebraska
- 1:24Speaker 1: in comparison to how much roster turnover we've had here
- 1:28Speaker 1: with the other teams in the Big Ten, our peer
- 1:31Speaker 1: institutions in the Big Ten, and obviously the teams at
- 1:34Speaker 1: the top of the Big Ten.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, they I mean, they're kind of right in the middle.
- 1:39Speaker 2: What we've noticed now are the really really elite programs
- 1:43Speaker 2: that can get the talent locally, like in Ohio State
- 1:47Speaker 2: or you know, get the Blue Chippers, or you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: even at USC, they're not as portal reliant now as
- 1:54Speaker 2: they've stabilized their program because you're still better off of
- 1:58Speaker 2: finding a guy retaining them because it's a lot more
- 2:01Speaker 2: expensive to go out and try to find a good
- 2:04Speaker 2: player maybe at the same level in the portal because
- 2:06Speaker 2: there's going to be more suitors. So I think the
- 2:09Speaker 2: model you can do it is still find and retain
- 2:12Speaker 2: versus you know, continuing to turn your roster. But you know,
- 2:15Speaker 2: these programs that have gone through coaching changes, like in
- 2:18Speaker 2: the Big twelve Iowa State, Oklahoma State, you're talking eighty
- 2:22Speaker 2: new players they've had to add to the roster. Penn State,
- 2:26Speaker 2: we know, is added a ton with a large number
- 2:28Speaker 2: of Iowa State players that moved out to aim or
- 2:32Speaker 2: move out to state college. But that's just the name
- 2:34Speaker 2: of the game now when you do have a coaching change.
- 2:36Speaker 2: So it's you know, it's something to think about Nebraska
- 2:39Speaker 2: when they went through coaching changes in the past. You know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: they've never really had to go through just like a
- 2:45Speaker 2: mass exodus of a roster. I mean, that's become more
- 2:47Speaker 2: the norm. And if it ever happened here again, I mean,
- 2:50Speaker 2: it probably would happen here, you know, where you'd have
- 2:53Speaker 2: to go through a deal where fifty sixty plus guys
- 2:56Speaker 2: could be leading the program and you got to find
- 2:57Speaker 2: fifty sixty replacement players.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's funny how the transfer portal works, and it's so
- 3:03Speaker 1: debilitating to rosters. Big announcement yesterday, one of the promising
- 3:07Speaker 1: young players in Indiana's program. I figure Indiana right now
- 3:10Speaker 1: is a big destination. But Tristan Abram, who was one
- 3:14Speaker 1: of their top recruits in twenty twenty five, enters the
- 3:16Speaker 1: portal before fall camp even begins, and I think this
- 3:20Speaker 1: guy was figured on to contribute for them this year.
- 3:23Speaker 1: How much of that is going on? Is that an outliers?
- 3:27Speaker 2: That's an outlier and he actually technically can't go into
- 3:31Speaker 2: the portal till January. I mean, you can always declare
- 3:33Speaker 2: your intentions, but it would be silly for a guy
- 3:37Speaker 2: to enter the portal right now because you would stop
- 3:39Speaker 2: getting paid at that point. And maybe there's more to
- 3:43Speaker 2: the story on that situation. I mean, we saw it
- 3:45Speaker 2: with the bowl games this year. A lot of players
- 3:48Speaker 2: pretended as if they were going to play in bowl
- 3:50Speaker 2: games through December, and then a week of the bowl
- 3:53Speaker 2: game they back out of the bowl game. And you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: because he get paid for another month, and for some
- 3:57Speaker 2: of these guys getting paid for another month, it's a
- 3:59Speaker 2: pretty good pay.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, why would they leave early? This makes no sense
- 4:02Speaker 1: unless there was some other issue associated with him. Let's
- 4:05Speaker 1: visit for a second about Jersey patches. Jersey patches are coming.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Ohio State just signed a big deal. Notre Dame signed
- 4:14Speaker 1: a big deal. There have been a number of schools
- 4:16Speaker 1: that have signed big deals. Nebraska athletic director Troy dan
- 4:19Speaker 1: and says, we're not going to do one this year.
- 4:22Speaker 1: What do you know about Nebraska's pursuit of a jersey
- 4:25Speaker 1: patch for money?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah, they had been really quiet about this until yesterday.
- 4:30Speaker 2: But part of me was like, maybe you want to
- 4:33Speaker 2: see what the market's at, because if you entered into
- 4:36Speaker 2: an agreement, you know, before you really had a good
- 4:38Speaker 2: feel for the overall national market, you might you might
- 4:41Speaker 2: have not got enough money, and you beget you give
- 4:43Speaker 2: away a really sacred pizza real estate. So now we
- 4:45Speaker 2: know what the market is. Notre Dame in Ohio state
- 4:48Speaker 2: are fifteen to eighteen nineteen million. Where would Nebraska fall?
- 4:52Speaker 2: I mean, what would the number be it would take
- 4:55Speaker 2: to put a patch on there? And who are the
- 4:56Speaker 2: corporations within the state that could afford that? I mean,
- 5:00Speaker 2: there's a lot of kind of questions about if you
- 5:02Speaker 2: go that route, because you're not just gonna put anything
- 5:05Speaker 2: on those jersey because obviously a sacred, sacred historical jersey
- 5:10Speaker 2: in the Ohio state in Notre Name, though putting big
- 5:12Speaker 2: patches on yesterday, I thought it was significant in this
- 5:15Speaker 2: conversation because if you could get fifteen plus million dollars
- 5:19Speaker 2: for a jersey patch, that pays a lot of your
- 5:22Speaker 2: roster bill moving forward.
- 5:23Speaker 1: So you don't think that the Golden Tassel Gentlemen's Club
- 5:27Speaker 1: logo will be on the Nebraska jersey this year.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's gonna have to be a pretty squeaky clean
- 5:34Speaker 2: company that's got some history, is my guest.
- 5:37Speaker 1: All Right, Seana will be there, we'll have a sound
- 5:39Speaker 1: from Nebraska on the stage, and Big ten media days
- 5:42Speaker 1: for you Tomorrow. Lashan's there to report live right here
- 5:45Speaker 1: on eleven ten KF. It'll be okay, big guy, have fun.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We'll talk to you soon.
