- 0:00Speaker 1: A lot of AJ Brown talk last week, and it
- 0:03Speaker 1: seemingly has not gone away quite yet. More stuff coming
- 0:07Speaker 1: out between the relationships between AJ and Jalen hurtson how
- 0:13Speaker 1: much that really played a factor into what happened here
- 0:16Speaker 1: with the Philadelphia Eagles. You know one Jeremy Fowler article
- 0:20Speaker 1: today over at ESPN dot com suggesting that, hey, AJ
- 0:25Speaker 1: just got frustrated with the lack of throwing the ball
- 0:29Speaker 1: into tight windows in against zone coverage. I mean that
- 0:33Speaker 1: to me, Jeff Boscher sells like a really specific reason
- 0:37Speaker 1: to just say, you know what, I'm baling on this
- 0:40Speaker 1: whole team here, But that seems like one of the
- 0:43Speaker 1: reasons why AJ apparently was fed up with this offense.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I mean, listen, I mean it's it's you draw a
- 0:50Speaker 2: line in a correlation. What does AJ Brown want? He
- 0:54Speaker 2: wants to be successful. He wants to win and feel
- 0:57Speaker 2: like he was the reason for the wins. And you
- 0:59Speaker 2: want to be able to say when his next contract
- 1:02Speaker 2: is up to he's still an elite receiver who can
- 1:05Speaker 2: command a lot of money because he catches a lot
- 1:07Speaker 2: of passes and makes a lot of plays and don't
- 1:10Speaker 2: coverage is something that most of the NFL plays now
- 1:12Speaker 2: more you see more zone than man. And there were certainly,
- 1:17Speaker 2: you know, several times a game. You know, we would
- 1:19Speaker 2: talk about this on inside the Tape with Greg Cosel,
- 1:22Speaker 2: where we would show our viewers who watched on YouTube
- 1:25Speaker 2: times where there was a play, a specific play designed especially.
- 1:30Speaker 3: In zone to just especially early in the.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Game, get a guy open, get Aj there, get him
- 1:35Speaker 2: the ball, playing your foot the ball, move the change,
- 1:38Speaker 2: let's go that Dylan didn't make or wouldn't make. I
- 1:41Speaker 2: should say, I'm and there were times he did too,
- 1:43Speaker 2: but we would find those three or four times. And yeah,
- 1:46Speaker 2: you heard a J. Brown talk to the media when
- 1:50Speaker 2: he was talking to them about fructicising with the pass offense.
- 1:53Speaker 2: And though we never threw any one particular person under
- 1:56Speaker 2: the bus, I mean, it's pretty obvious who and what
- 1:59Speaker 2: he was talking about. And that's all part of frustration
- 2:01Speaker 2: with the pass offense.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, listen, we don't know what AJ Brown
- 2:07Speaker 1: would have looked like in this particular offense here, but
- 2:11Speaker 1: do we anticipate that we're gonna see AJ Brown fit
- 2:15Speaker 1: in better with the New England Patriots, Well, I don't know.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I mean, despite his annoyance with the pass offense. I
- 2:24Speaker 2: mean he's still caught a lot of passes, still had
- 2:26Speaker 2: a lot of yards, was in the playoffs all four years,
- 2:29Speaker 2: two Super Bowls wins. One kind of hard to say
- 2:32Speaker 2: he's going to go to another team and have that
- 2:35Speaker 2: much success. Now, if you're asking me, he's even going
- 2:37Speaker 2: to catch more passes and have more yards and more touchdowns,
- 2:42Speaker 2: but the team won't be a successful Okay, maybe maybe
- 2:45Speaker 2: I'll see that. But I also think, you know, Drake
- 2:47Speaker 2: may is only two years in the league. We saw
- 2:49Speaker 2: him have a really successful year. We've seen a lot
- 2:51Speaker 2: of guys that like second year of success first the
- 2:54Speaker 2: second year and then aggressed a little bit, asked about her.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Things just don't go right. So he should be their
- 3:00Speaker 2: primary target. Is clearly their best receiver, and I imagine
- 3:04Speaker 2: they'll get the ball a lot. But I think it
- 3:06Speaker 2: remains to be seen whether he's in some kind of
- 3:08Speaker 2: incredible offense where he's going to get end to twelve
- 3:11Speaker 2: targets a game.
- 3:12Speaker 3: And be as productive and the team is going to win.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeff, if you listen to Boston sports talk radio,
- 3:20Speaker 1: it's not universal that they think that this is a
- 3:23Speaker 1: home run deal for them. Are you surprised by that,
- 3:27Speaker 1: not really, you.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Know, I think the three major cities on the Northeast here, Philly, Boston,
- 3:31Speaker 2: New York. You know, like they look at everything skeptically
- 3:36Speaker 2: or curiously, and we do that here in Philadelphia. And
- 3:38Speaker 2: Ego's got a player, and sometimes like the fans fall
- 3:41Speaker 2: in love with that guy, Becau's got a name, and
- 3:43Speaker 2: we'll give the on inside of the person. We'll give
- 3:45Speaker 2: you an objective breakdown and say hey, watch for this,
- 3:47Speaker 2: watch for that, And people will get annoyed by that
- 3:49Speaker 2: because sometimes people you talk about this on your show,
- 3:53Speaker 2: to get infatuated with names or what people have done
- 3:56Speaker 2: instead of what they are in the moment.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Right, So it doesn't surprise me that the.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Boston media is looking at Adia Brown's last two years
- 4:03Speaker 2: and saying, hey, somewhere near when he did the first
- 4:06Speaker 2: two years. And then you've got a situation where you
- 4:09Speaker 2: have a player who's kind of forcing his way out
- 4:11Speaker 2: of a team. So some towns and their media aren't
- 4:16Speaker 2: as an objective like that. I think Boston falls into
- 4:19Speaker 2: that category of media.
- 4:21Speaker 1: That is all right, Jeff Boucher inside the Birds of
- 4:23Speaker 1: course podcasts you can check that out on all podcasting platforms.
- 4:27Speaker 1: A couple of takeaways from Albert Breer his latest on
- 4:32Speaker 1: this whole situation. He says, Hollie Roseman wanted a first
- 4:35Speaker 1: and another high end pick and basically was told, if
- 4:39Speaker 1: you can go get a one in a two, go
- 4:42Speaker 1: do it. So does that say that there wasn't a
- 4:45Speaker 1: big market for AJ Brown? Does that kind of confirm
- 4:48Speaker 1: what we thought?
- 4:49Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, if there was, And we talked about
- 4:53Speaker 2: this really early on. I thought there was an interesting
- 4:55Speaker 2: pat and mouse game or game of chess going on
- 4:58Speaker 2: between Elliott Wolf and Ali Roseman, and of course Hollie
- 5:02Speaker 2: was going to set a price that was and you know,
- 5:05Speaker 2: some of them moves that were made in the offseason
- 5:08Speaker 2: may have dictated, you know, on the Jylen Waddell trade
- 5:10Speaker 2: and things of that nature, may have made it seem
- 5:13Speaker 2: like the Eagles would get equivalent value in return. But
- 5:18Speaker 2: I can certainly understand Eliot was saying, sure, if someone's
- 5:22Speaker 2: willing to give you that much, take it, we're not.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't. It doesn't
- 5:29Speaker 2: surprise that there weren't other teams that would have given
- 5:33Speaker 2: that up, because if you'd get prime AJ Brown and
- 5:36Speaker 2: maybe he's past that we don't know, and that's part
- 5:38Speaker 2: of why they didn't get that value. If if you
- 5:41Speaker 2: get prime aj Brown, you probably got yourself and you're
- 5:43Speaker 2: a contender, probably got yourself a really good team.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Right, And then part of the article by Albert Breer
- 5:49Speaker 1: most he said the Eagles Rosen wanted a twenty twenty
- 5:53Speaker 1: seven first that was shot down. The Patriots were really
- 5:56Speaker 1: only willing to trade at twenty twenty eight first, and
- 5:59Speaker 1: Phil wanted a twenty twenty seven pick on the higher
- 6:04Speaker 1: end to be part of the deal, and that never happened.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So I guess it really shows this really dried up
- 6:10Speaker 1: for a roseman. Where he really goes down this avenue
- 6:13Speaker 1: where okay, I have to take the first round pick,
- 6:15Speaker 1: it'll be twenty twenty eight, and he gets the fifth
- 6:18Speaker 1: round pick is almost like a you know, a consolation
- 6:21Speaker 1: prize there.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, And some of this is, you know, it'll be
- 6:27Speaker 2: interesting to look back and see if the if the
- 6:31Speaker 2: right things manifest. But a lot of teams want their
- 6:33Speaker 2: first round pick in twenty twenty seven because it's supposed
- 6:36Speaker 2: to be considered a really really deep draft coming up.
- 6:40Speaker 2: A lot of quarterback talent, a lot of overall talent,
- 6:43Speaker 2: and so that has set into the perception that you
- 6:46Speaker 2: really don't want to give away a twenty twenty seven
- 6:49Speaker 2: first rounder, especially if you think you'll be kicking anywhere
- 6:51Speaker 2: in the top twenty to twenty three, where usually it's
- 6:55Speaker 2: top twelve to eighteen. Is the gold there. But we'll
- 7:00Speaker 2: look back and see if that matters. But I sort
- 7:02Speaker 2: of understand how he's approached that up for the first
- 7:05Speaker 2: round pick. I mean, there's yeah, you can't there's some
- 7:09Speaker 2: drafts that are pretter than others. But it's not even
- 7:11Speaker 2: about the depth of the draft. It's what you can
- 7:13Speaker 2: do with an extra first round pick, including your own
- 7:17Speaker 2: first round pick, and then others that you might get,
- 7:19Speaker 2: and the maneuverability it gives you in the draft.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Right. And you know, one of the things that I
- 7:25Speaker 1: think gets lost in the Saucier, Jeff, is the Philly
- 7:29Speaker 1: the Eagles end up with the savings. You know, when
- 7:32Speaker 1: they move this to June first, they get about thirty
- 7:35Speaker 1: million dollars back that allows them to make the trade
- 7:38Speaker 1: for Gernard sign him, and now ultimately I would imagine
- 7:42Speaker 1: turn their focus to Cooper, Degene, Jalen Carter, and Quinnon
- 7:45Speaker 1: Mitchell probably something they wouldn't been able to do had
- 7:49Speaker 1: AJ been here.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know you're correcting thinking along those lines.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But I tell you the first guy who's really got
- 7:58Speaker 2: to get an extension done now, surprisingly because it's not
- 8:01Speaker 2: one of the aus we normally talk about with that
- 8:03Speaker 2: third year that you're referring to, is DeVonta Smith. I mean,
- 8:07Speaker 2: DeVonta Smith's coming up on believe the last and we
- 8:10Speaker 2: talked about this on Inside the Burns. We're doing a
- 8:13Speaker 2: contract series and this will come out tomorrow. But Smith
- 8:16Speaker 2: is his verage salary AAV is not even close to
- 8:21Speaker 2: like the top fifteen in the NFL, and now he's
- 8:24Speaker 2: about to be wide receiver one. And I believe the
- 8:28Speaker 2: contracting sign was only a three year deal when he
- 8:30Speaker 2: signed it a couple of years ago, so it'll be
- 8:32Speaker 2: at the end of it, he's got to he's got
- 8:34Speaker 2: to be paid commensurate with what a wide receiver one
- 8:38Speaker 2: in the NFL is, and right now he's not. And
- 8:40Speaker 2: I'd be surprised if something wasn't done really quickly on
- 8:44Speaker 2: him to get him up to speed, because now only
- 8:47Speaker 2: you have to do that for him in general, because
- 8:50Speaker 2: he's coming up toward the end. But if you wait
- 8:53Speaker 2: until the end until next year, when you've already seen
- 8:56Speaker 2: the price for wide receivers go up thanks to Jackson
- 8:59Speaker 2: Smith and Bigma and somebody else rated thirty five million. Oh,
- 9:03Speaker 2: Freddy C. London, Right, do you wait for next off
- 9:06Speaker 2: season where it's Nikuma who could be up as long
- 9:09Speaker 2: as he keeps his head on straight, where it could
- 9:11Speaker 2: be Lake Neighbors if he comes back and has a
- 9:13Speaker 2: huge year. I mean that price tag. You know Jordan
- 9:16Speaker 2: Madison's age, that press tag can get to forty forty
- 9:20Speaker 2: a year of one of all said and done, so
- 9:22Speaker 2: I would definitely get Devonda Smith done now. Well you can, yes,
- 9:26Speaker 2: you'll have to give him a big eight The look
- 9:30Speaker 2: team friendly again.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Why do we think there hasn't been anything done for
- 9:34Speaker 1: Jalen Carter yet?
- 9:38Speaker 2: Well, I think they had to get through the whole
- 9:39Speaker 2: A j Brown situation and figure out what their funds
- 9:42Speaker 2: were going to be this year and next year, and
- 9:45Speaker 2: make sure the deal went through and it was posted
- 9:49Speaker 2: to first And I would think you will see some
- 9:53Speaker 2: contract activity now in the aftermath of that. I mean, yeah,
- 9:57Speaker 2: it didn't happen yesterday or the after agent Brown got
- 10:00Speaker 2: but I'm sure you're gonna hear and see some talks
- 10:03Speaker 2: going on for a couple of.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Guys and then what uh so they also so Quin
- 10:08Speaker 1: and Cooper are in the same draft class, that's going
- 10:10Speaker 1: to be a very tricky off season when they have
- 10:12Speaker 1: to make that decision.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be next year because that's when their
- 10:16Speaker 2: first eligible for their extensions, and it will be tricky,
- 10:21Speaker 2: especially for.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Cooper and Nolan Smith also in that draft class.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Sorry, I wouldn't I wouldn't put that high on the
- 10:27Speaker 2: list of they're gonna He's already locked into the fifty
- 10:30Speaker 2: year deal. I'm not sure he's gonna get the the
- 10:34Speaker 2: the extension. So, especially with Grenard and jaalens Hunt, I
- 10:39Speaker 2: would see Cooper's tricky because now he's playing safety. He
- 10:42Speaker 2: was an outside corner. He's mostly a nickelback, which is
- 10:45Speaker 2: very important too. They've got to figure out a price
- 10:48Speaker 2: for him, and unfortunately for the Eagles, guys who are versatile,
- 10:51Speaker 2: who don't have you know, used to be able to say, well,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you're not in this, you're not that, so we can
- 10:55Speaker 2: get you at a relatively good price. But look at
- 10:57Speaker 2: Trump McDuffie, who had played inside outside for the Chiefs
- 11:01Speaker 2: and he gets trained to the Rams, the first thing
- 11:03Speaker 2: to do is turn around and give him a thirty
- 11:05Speaker 2: million a year track. So if cooperty team has a
- 11:09Speaker 2: really good year playing mostly nickel and playing safety and
- 11:12Speaker 2: played as well, he's something like man some type of
- 11:16Speaker 2: or at least want some type of top end money.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And then it's going to be a question of to
- 11:21Speaker 2: think he who's just given to him? Or does it
- 11:22Speaker 2: become kind of a you know, I don't want to
- 11:25Speaker 2: call it an argument, but like, you know, something that
- 11:28Speaker 2: dragged on for a little bit and maybe they can't
- 11:30Speaker 2: reach the right number.
- 11:31Speaker 1: The same situation with Jalen Hurt. So I mean, what
- 11:34Speaker 1: if this offense takes him to new heights, what's he
- 11:37Speaker 1: making next year? I mean I would imagine a lot
- 11:40Speaker 1: that probably well, I would imagine right that he's probably
- 11:45Speaker 1: gonna want a new deal though, right.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I would think, so, oh yeah, if he if he really?
- 11:50Speaker 2: That's why this is such a big critically year for him,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and he doesn't have to be MVP. He doesn't have
- 11:55Speaker 2: to be you know, I would say he should probably
- 11:59Speaker 2: have to Pro Bowl, but he hasn't made a ton
- 12:02Speaker 2: of those. But still he's got to lead the team
- 12:05Speaker 2: deep into the playoffs and be good.
- 12:06Speaker 3: And actimate to the offense.
- 12:08Speaker 2: If he does, he's going to be rewarded immediately. If
- 12:11Speaker 2: he doesn't, it's going to be a very interesting question
- 12:13Speaker 2: about where the franchise wants to go from there, all.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Right, Jeff Moscher, Of course, the Inside the Birds podcast
- 12:20Speaker 1: has plenty more conversation. What is uh? And speaking of contracts,
- 12:24Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley got that extension, how does that kind of read?
- 12:28Speaker 1: Is he kind of locked in for just this year
- 12:32Speaker 1: or this year end next year?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, And we talked about that extensively on the contract
- 12:37Speaker 2: series that started today with quarterback and running back.
- 12:40Speaker 3: We talked about hurt and why that's important and.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Barkley too, because he is his guaranteed money most almost
- 12:47Speaker 2: all of it will be up after this year. So
- 12:50Speaker 2: if he does not perform well, or if he's you know,
- 12:54Speaker 2: looking like a guy who's got a lot of mileage
- 12:56Speaker 2: on his body and you know, not really the Sakum
- 13:00Speaker 2: of two years ago, than the Eagles around to make
- 13:03Speaker 2: a decision there too. Why would you pay all that
- 13:05Speaker 2: money for a running back who is not giving you
- 13:10Speaker 2: that kind of supreme kind of production. If that were
- 13:12Speaker 2: to be the taste.
- 13:14Speaker 1: All right, Well, check out that series over at Inside
- 13:17Speaker 1: the Birds dot Com on all podcasting platforms to get
- 13:20Speaker 1: a little deeper on some of these contracts, because that's
- 13:23Speaker 1: really what was up. Now that June first has passed,
- 13:25Speaker 1: we're in the new league year and these new contracts
- 13:28Speaker 1: start to kind of take shape, and Jalen Carter, you
- 13:31Speaker 1: mentioned Devonte Smith. Those are two big ones to keep
- 13:34Speaker 1: an eye on, maybe as training camp looms and the
- 13:38Speaker 1: mandatory begins tomorrow. Tomorrow and Wednesday, the Eagles mandatory practice
- 13:44Speaker 1: on the field, two more days of active football before
- 13:47Speaker 1: a little hibernation. Most appreciated man I might take
