- 0:00The Electrical Show with Thomas Najie. Welcome to the Electrical Show with Bosh Professional
- 0:10here on fixed Radio on Thomas Najie and with me as always is Paul Ninan.
- 0:16Now on today's show, we're going to be talking about specialisms. Is
- 0:21Yes, we love is ms. If you decide to focus on one specific
- 0:26thing, you can make potentially a lot more money than if you do a
- 0:29bunch of different things. So you see I've said that, I've said this
- 0:32before. You see a Builders van and do tily plumbing, heating, electrics,
- 0:35joinage, fencing, roofing, gardening, landscaping, and this is like
- 0:38it goes on and on and on and at the very end, if you
- 0:40don't see what you want here, call us. So like you should do
- 0:43everything, but if you actually just stick to one thing, the theory is
- 0:47you can make more money and it does stand true. So to discuss this,
- 0:51we're going to be joined by electrician and Ivy install At Danny Milan otherwise
- 0:55known on Instagram I believe as Sparky Milan, so he can tell us about
- 1:00his experience installing ev charge points. The Electrical Show with Thomas Nagie on Fixed
- 1:07Radio the Builders Station you're listening to the electrical show with Bosch Professional and Thomas
- 1:12Nagie in a hot seat with me as Paul Miena, and we are joined
- 1:15now by Danny Milan, otherwise known on social media as Sparking Milan. Now,
- 1:19Danny, just bring us up to speed. Why was it you got
- 1:23into EV What was the reasoning behind that? So basically, he's a friend
- 1:29I had down in ethics and he's vastly more experienced than me in this.
- 1:34With anything new, I don't really dive into it straight away, you know.
- 1:37Investing money into the testing equipment that calls is all that I'd like to
- 1:42learn on the job, firstly with people that really know what they're doing.
- 1:47Like Paul would be a great example of that. When he invited me down
- 1:49to the train station to Susan testing that I didn't understand and yeah, he
- 1:55chucked me on it with him, and I like to learn that way.
- 1:57So, yeah, you're not alone. I've been working with him for about
- 2:00two years and I still I still don't. You're not alone, right,
- 2:02don't worry. It's not nice person in the room, but yeah, honestly
- 2:08it trust me. You feel after after you have a you get what's called
- 2:12I'm just going off pisted here, you get what's called defects reports if you
- 2:15work with him, and trust me, if you get one of those by
- 2:17the end of the day, you feel like a degenerate that just just sign
- 2:21on at the job center the next day. So don't worry. I understand
- 2:23where you're coming from. But anyway back to it, what kind of sort
- 2:28of the time and sort of financial commitment learning what you needed to learn?
- 2:32What sort of how about that side of things? Yes, I mean I've
- 2:36done it a little bit differently, but I mean if you're just learning the
- 2:38calls, as you know, it was it a week. I think to
- 2:40do the call for Ruffle is about three days. Maybe it's about five hundred
- 2:44Queerly, it's more the testing equipment, isn't it. If you need to
- 2:47get a new test, another fifteen hundred quid. But what I mean,
- 2:50I don't know if you're allowed to use brands, but you know myself,
- 2:53I use the MEGGA and I actually seventeen forty one. I do think it's
- 2:59really good that you can send your tester down to Dover and they just upgrade
- 3:04it for you to the seventeen forty one plus so that it does all of
- 3:07the testing for you. So you know, I do think that's good where
- 3:09they can help you, they help you out. And then I think,
- 3:13is it like four hundred quids to the plug in tester at that? So
- 3:15that goes with it. So in terms of the actual cost, it's probably
- 3:21it could be a grand two grand, can't it. But I've done it
- 3:23slightly different where I learned for a good six months with somebody, you know,
- 3:29who really knows what they're doing, to sort of understand it myself.
- 3:32You've just pushed a button with me. I've just recently bought the Mega test
- 3:38plug in Jobby Gets. I'm fit in one of my house and I am
- 3:43actually I've just started all the paperwork and everything with all the DNO approvals.
- 3:46That's a pain, I am. One thing I am frustrated about with EV
- 3:51is why we have to buy another box? Why do we have to buy
- 3:53a box plugging our test kit? Manning manny Man here, I'd love someone
- 3:58to have that conversation. Is I get we need a proper plug socket and
- 4:01we need to do all the internings, but why can't could this not have
- 4:04been done easy without selling us a vastly expensive box. Yeah, I do
- 4:10agree with that, but I think, isn't it the I mean my test
- 4:13that it went through. It was done the loop test obviously, but yeah,
- 4:16I agree, couldn't they have done it a different way and it goes
- 4:18through the RCD test? But I think isn't the specific issue that it doesn't
- 4:24do the DC test and it needs a real specific extra for that. I've
- 4:29seen some bits of test equipment, and I've seen some rigs where they've been
- 4:32doing tests on evy equipment and they've had to almost work out a bypass to
- 4:39get the right test depending on the plug or the socket that you're using.
- 4:44And you just sit there. I remember when I did my two nine on
- 4:46nine EV course and I'm sitting there right where do we do this? I?
- 4:48No, No, you just do it at the terminal? Why where
- 4:50I don't really work on this type of ev socket? And you're like,
- 4:55I mean, I'm not a mass ev install. I'm doing my first one,
- 4:57starting it at the moment, but it just it really seemed like a
- 5:01massive headache the whole process. It is a bit of a money making I
- 5:06think it always is. Yes, another another bit of test that you have
- 5:12to do. It feels like that's what gets on one if people always have
- 5:15a big about electricians only loads them money, and if that you don't know
- 5:18the constant courses and test equipment, and it's just so much the tool up
- 5:25keeper playing tool. There's so much money to be spent. I mean,
- 5:29I know you're working on the railway and you're getting the money thrown at you,
- 5:31so that's lovely. But for the rest of the steward, for the
- 5:39taxpayer, we don't get money thrown at us. We have to justify value,
- 5:42Thank you very much. One good bit of news, just one good
- 5:46bit of news for you is now that the two nine one nine courses is
- 5:51pretty much redundant. There's now a trifector of course, is if you're interested
- 5:57in domestic, commercial or the larger scale stuff. I've committed in the next
- 6:00two years, I'm going to do it, which is just going to be
- 6:02some of the most painful things I've ever done, but hopefully it improves the
- 6:06level of training because I remember when EV first came out and our good friend
- 6:11Dan Jackson went on one of the very first EV courses and he just went
- 6:15All we were talked about was earthing it. That's a good point. I
- 6:19do think that a lot of people don't from people I've supokes to, they
- 6:23don't understand if you if you lose a neutral and a pen lost device,
- 6:28and what that might do. So you know, the people do learn things
- 6:31from them, And yes, I say, people I speak to seem to
- 6:35not fully understand that. But I think probably better to work with someone like
- 6:42you. I mean, you're so knowledgeable, that's what That's how I prefers
- 6:45learn anyway. No, I'm not. Every day I'm terrified, and I'm
- 6:47constantly trying to learn and trying to remember what I've forgotten. It's a never
- 6:51ending cycle of misery. What's your experience has been so fast since you've done
- 6:56your extra training and you bought your kit and all the rest of it,
- 7:00have you found it out in the real world actually doing it? So I'm
- 7:02mainly dealing in domestic and like I say, I've shadowed a good friend of
- 7:06mine, Jack Ireland, who taught me a lot of what I know so
- 7:11far. And yeah, it's mainly domestic base rather than the bigger commercial jobs.
- 7:16But I do find that the customers are just so tight with it,
- 7:19like they will spend thousand pounds on a car, and then they don't want
- 7:26to spend a thousand pounds for just a proper insult. Do you know what
- 7:29I mean? It's when you work out, yeah, what they're trying to
- 7:32get the price for when you took off your materials. I'm like, you
- 7:36want me to do this for like sixty pounding by the time I take everything
- 7:41off the money getting the Unfortunately, people want the function, they don't want
- 7:44the form. They don't care about the neatness of the cable or any of
- 7:46the techno babble that we try and impart to them. It's exactly give us
- 7:51the best price and doesn't work. I said this before it in and yeah,
- 7:57just going on, it's literally what you've just said that people go out
- 8:00and I think nothing is spending fifty ground on a car. But when it
- 8:03comes to doing the pod cheapest possible, mate, Nah, can do that,
- 8:05can get a cheaper quote, mate, Na. But would you like
- 8:09electric? So I was going to say, wouldn't you like some good news
- 8:13Danny, because I think not many people know about this, but the IET
- 8:16creating a new standard called IET zero one. That's the title of the standard,
- 8:24and it is a standard that deals with open pen or open combined protective
- 8:28neutral conductive detection devices. I have to be very careful what I say from
- 8:33now on, but I don't actually know why they're writing a standard for it,
- 8:37because surely the manufacturers or International Committee should be writing this or BSI,
- 8:41but it would appear the IET have taken the lead and are writing this.
- 8:46I don't know if this is going to be free to members. I know
- 8:48that the draft of public comment will be out soon, so please check the
- 8:52website and please comment. Please give them as many comments as you can,
- 8:56because no doubt this will come out as a book or a standard that it
- 9:00would be worth what having if you're an EV installer, I mean there was
- 9:03a there's a well known brand of charger that we come you have doesn't even
- 9:09have the pen loss device inside it. I mean it's just unbelievable with how
- 9:13big that brand is, and people will just install it and they don't think
- 9:18about a ROD or any any other section. So yeah, they're definitely I'm
- 9:24actually part of that club. I genuinely believe you should a select an erect
- 9:26and not have to rely on open device. Just remember, an opening device
- 9:31is looking for failures in the DNO network that we pay massive electricity bills to
- 9:35be maintained. And yet if you look at a network map, not that
- 9:39I ever have looked at a network map and you see the amount of red
- 9:41spots on it for cable failures, it's off the charts. Man, So
- 9:46how's that going to how's that going to work with the infrastructure we've had?
- 9:48Yeah, how do they fix that? So they will? They was going
- 9:54to be a lot of cycle to work schemes coming. I can see.
- 9:56Well, it's partly so I've read my local networks standards. They get about
- 10:01twenty six billion every five years on a five year framework. A lot of
- 10:03that goes in operating costs and profit, and a lot of it is going
- 10:07on more monitoring. I think I did a freenom of information request on the
- 10:11networks and they told me that it was twelve percent of the low vol which
- 10:13network is actually monitored. So if you think of all the energy that goes
- 10:16to people's houses, they only know where twelve percent of it goes. The
- 10:20rest of it is lost. Well, look, day, do you think
- 10:22this ev tech? Do you think it's here to stay? Or is this
- 10:26just a flash in the pan, so to speak. I mean, I'm
- 10:28not one hundred percent convinced on it. Think Yeah, I think it was
- 10:35Pull on social media that shared a great talk. I'm sure it was him,
- 10:39and it was about how much it costs to you know, to generate
- 10:43the battery and can you actually put yeah, the carbon football if you put
- 10:48them side by side, your normal car with your with your EV car,
- 10:54actually there's no real saving, actually more expensive. So yeah, I agree.
- 11:00I mean, I think it is possibly a splash in the pan.
- 11:03And like we've just touched on, how do we support all of this?
- 11:07You just can't. It's a good point. I think it's a I think
- 11:11EV's here to stay. I think it's a stopgap for the super rich to
- 11:16put to perfect Frank, the fact of the matter is the EV market was
- 11:18slow to gain traction because it's the manufacturers of the cars who want to control
- 11:22it. Only got a look at the standards committees around it. It's will
- 11:26tell you when we're ready for this. I'm sure if the oil companies and
- 11:30the manufacturer cars wanted to hold on for another ten years, they would,
- 11:33But governments are under too much pressure. But yeah, too, aswer the
- 11:35question and I'm not one hundred percent convinced, but I do enjoy in schooling
- 11:41it, so I'll do it because I make money and I enjoy it.
- 11:43So yeah, well, before we end it, what are the sort of
- 11:46specialisms are you planning? If you are, are you even planning on getting
- 11:50into other specialisms? Or are you happy with where you are? Yeah?
- 11:54I'm happy with where I am. I mean, I can only speak for
- 11:56myself. I will learn anything new that I enjoyed stalling and that I enjoy
- 12:01learning about. I mean, solo would be the next one obviously for me
- 12:05to get my toe into, but I just it doesn't infuse me when I
- 12:11think about installing it and actually putting up the panels, getting on the ruse,
- 12:15none of that really really entuses me. So yeah, at the moment,
- 12:18I'm happy with where I am. Well, Danny, look as always,
- 12:22it's been a pleasure having you on here, and thank you very much
- 12:24for joining us today. We'll get you back on here again soon. Cheers,
- 12:28dude, brilliant, Thanks very much. Good to hear from you,
- 12:30guys. The Electrical Show on Fixed Radio. This is the Electrical Show on
- 12:37Thomas Nagie with Paul Meenan and we have Sorry do you want? I thought
- 12:43i'd just try and on a tone that was fantastic. We've been we've been
- 12:48discussing specialisms throughout the show. If you've just tuned in, it's a little
- 12:52bit like but Paul, We've spoken to Danny about how you installs EV,
- 12:58what what the roots are probably the most important ones to consider what you feel
- 13:05well, there's always there's two routes, is and there always there's the formal
- 13:07route, there's the informal route. Sometimes the formal routes go and get to
- 13:09qualify a qualification, knock on the door. The informal one is put yourself
- 13:13out there, go and work with the people who are doing learned from them,
- 13:16contribute to them. They will contribute back. But I wouldn't stop at
- 13:20EV. I haven't. I did solo PV and I'm glad I've done EV
- 13:24and I'm going to do EV again next year to see what the changes are
- 13:28because it's a it's a real headache cover. It's a fast moving industry and
- 13:31the paperwork behind it it's off the charts. It's insane. I'm I'm about
- 13:37to install my one at home, but not until I get all the paperwork
- 13:39approve, but they want photos of every part you meet aboard all sorts.
- 13:43It's I've got these I was talking about these. I've got these as like
- 13:48ten fifteen charge pods we've got to install at this warehouse. And they're these
- 13:52five hundred five absolutely massive things about eight hundred kilograms each. We've got to
- 13:58go to have to byers out to Italy to go and do their training course
- 14:01to be approved to go and fit this charger. Otherwise I'm not allowed to
- 14:05fit them. I mean it's kind of cool because then he's like, well,
- 14:07once you've got once you've got the training, he said, we'll just
- 14:09give you all of our charger to do on every depots. I'm like,
- 14:11yeah, for sure. So this is what I'm saying about it. If
- 14:13you specialize in something, you can make a lot of money. Yeah.
- 14:16If you've become an accredited installer by the manufacturer, it means they've got peace
- 14:20of mind and their warranty in their confidence, and you learn how a unique
- 14:24piece of kit works as well. So yeah, yeah, why is it
- 14:28important to stick to one specialism? It's not, it's not. It's if
- 14:33you stick to one is m and you're happy doing one is m more power
- 14:35to you. God bless you have fun doing it. For me, I
- 14:39would find it incredibly boring. I did essentrally emarin for a while. It
- 14:43got boring. After a while. I wanted to continue to be challenged.
- 14:46For me, I would not just stick to ev there's a smart element to
- 14:50it. Use that to build up your smart knowledge, diversify. You don't
- 14:54have to do it immediately, do it over a period of five to ten
- 14:58years if needs be, or choose not to. But it's entirely down to
- 15:01you. But I don't. I think let's be perfect, Frank. One
- 15:05of the banter things that happens in our trade is how many blokes go up
- 15:09to go You're not a spark. If you haven't done this, you ain't
- 15:11a spark. If you ain't done that, you ain't a spark. If
- 15:13you haven't done this. We're now at that point where these isms. What
- 15:16is an electrician? Asked a question, what is it someone who just installs
- 15:20wires competently capable it can terminate and test and design, Or is it someone
- 15:24who can select and erect, test, design, certify and do the isms
- 15:31and continually grow a friend of mine said, this isn't an industry where you
- 15:35just go in and you stop. This is a non stop journey of learning
- 15:37and development period. And if that's not for you, what you're doing in
- 15:41the industry. So I don't think sticking to one is a good thing.
- 15:46Yes, do it for a number of years until you are extremely competent,
- 15:50move on, grow. Let's wrap this up after some more music here on
- 15:54fixed radio, the builders station fixed radio, and that mean honeys Is today
- 16:00is electrical shore. We've been talking about specialisms our kids. It's a chip
- 16:07shop deep from mars Bar. Indeed, sorry, my impressions are terrible.
- 16:12We were just talking about Andy cam and how he's a Northerner North, Yes,
- 16:17lovely Northern saying that's like a bad thing, or we're just saying it's
- 16:19you know, it's the end of the show, so everyone's already switched off
- 16:22and got what if vice would you give to someone wanting to take the special
- 16:27we've gone from radio to TV. I would say, personally, I know
- 16:34it's too Like you said, there's two ways you can do it. You
- 16:37can either learn and train, or you can do it the other way,
- 16:41where you just basically insert yourself into a situation, just be the dumbest person
- 16:47in the room. And I'm a firm believer that that is the best way
- 16:49to learn. You learn the fastest because there are so many people in this
- 16:52world. They stay in a job because they're comfortable doing it. They know
- 16:56their surroundings and they're comfortable, which is fine and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 17:00But if you want to earn more money, and if you want to
- 17:03go someone and actually do something and really try to achieve something, you have
- 17:06to learn more. And the fastest way to do it is just to literally
- 17:08put yourself in an environment where you are literally the dumbest idiot in the run
- 17:15and just learn. It's it's literally and you just learn, learn, and
- 17:18then you know everything in that field move to it. Like you said,
- 17:22just then do that and then move to I'm totally a believer of that is
- 17:23the fastest way. It's an uncomfortable way of doing it because you have to
- 17:27be you know, you have to admit that, Okay, I don't know
- 17:32anything, but you do. The benefit is you learn really really fast.
- 17:36I would also say, don't wait for someone to invest in you. In
- 17:40you invest in you. So it's it's that chicken and egg cycle as well.
- 17:45As you go for a job I want to learn, they'll say have
- 17:48you got the qualifications? No, and then some people will go do the
- 17:51qualifications, They've got no job at the end of it. It's been of
- 17:53a chicken and eggcycle. For me. I have never ever ever allowed an
- 17:56employer to stop me going on a course. I have paid for it myself
- 18:00always and always invest in you because it's you that's out there earning money for
- 18:06you and your family. So yeah, that's one bit of advice. Don't
- 18:10stop developing yourself you want for an employer, they could just be carrot dangling.
- 18:15That's it for today's show. You can hear it again from ten o'clock
- 18:18tonight here on Fixed Radio with more great music. Now subscribe to the podcast.
- 18:22This is the most important part of the whole show. Subscribe to the
- 18:25podcast because it is worth a download as we sometimes put some exclusive bits in
- 18:30there, and please make sure to leave us a review for its It really
- 18:33does make a difference. We are building a community of electricians here at Fixed
- 18:37Radio and we do want you to join us now. You can do this
- 18:41by heading over to Fix radio dot co dot UK, and you can sign
- 18:45up to the Electrical Show newsletter and then you get a little video of me
- 18:48every week.
