- 0:01This is just a summary of where we've been and where we're
- 0:03heading with this podcast. So at the beginning, I don't
- 0:07know when we started this, but we started in the book of
- 0:10Genesis. We went through Genesis, Exodus,
- 0:13Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, First
- 0:18Samuel, Second Samuel, First Kings, Second Kings, First
- 0:22Chronicles, Second Chronicles. We've gone through Ezra,
- 0:26Nehemiah and Esther. Then we also did, we went back
- 0:33to the let's see which ones we did.
- 0:36We did Haggai and let's see, Haggai and Zechariah, those were
- 0:45the last two that we did. So we kind of jumped around and
- 0:48we are heading into the prophets, the book of the
- 0:52Prophets. And what I decided to do was my
- 0:55study Bible has this, the summary of all the kings.
- 0:59And so when we were reading First Kings and 2nd Kings and
- 1:02also First Chronicles and Second Chronicles, which is almost
- 1:05redundant in some ways of the information that was in First
- 1:09Kings, this is a time period where where just to give
- 1:14everyone an idea of where we are.
- 1:17So Solomon was king and then he died and then there was a
- 1:24disagreement or there were these two sides, that of Israel that
- 1:31wanted to have a king and they wanted different people to be
- 1:35kings. So 10 of the tribes went to the
- 1:38north and they had a a set of kings, a series of kings.
- 1:43And then Judah was in the South, and inside of the territory of
- 1:48Judah was the territory of Benjamin.
- 1:50So Judah and Benjamin were together in the South, and those
- 1:54two had separate kings, and their kings, I believe, were
- 1:59more like the anointed ones. They followed the succession.
- 2:04But the kings of Israel of the 10 tribes were ones that were
- 2:09appointed basically by the people and they were a poor play
- 2:13basically. So this study Bible shows what
- 2:17happened. So this all started when
- 2:20Solomon's reign ended and kings were brought about.
- 2:26The 1st 2 kings were Jeroboam and Rehoboam.
- 2:30Rehoboam. Now both of these from the kings
- 2:34of Israel and the kings of Judah.
- 2:36They were both evil at the time when they started.
- 2:40I kind of summarized on each one in this chart where it talks
- 2:43about kings and there were many series of kings in fact
- 2:49throughout all of the kings of Israel.
- 2:52The commentary in the Bible when it talks about if they followed
- 2:56the Lord or if they obeyed the Lord and if they were evil or
- 3:01not is what is talked about in the Bible.
- 3:04So I was just curious like how many were kind of good guys and
- 3:08how many were bad guys? So of Israel, the kings of
- 3:12Israel, every single one of them was, they did evil in the eyes
- 3:17of the Lord except for one, and that was Jehu.
- 3:21And he was assigned by God to pronounce judgement on some.
- 3:27And, and I believe he was in charge of the destruction of
- 3:32Ahab's family. I believe that's what he did,
- 3:35but he had a purpose with God. God uses someone's free will
- 3:40where they're intent on evil. So he wasn't necessarily a good
- 3:43person, but he used him to accomplish judgement.
- 3:46And that's what God often does, as we see through history.
- 3:51So then on the kings of Judah, they were not a whole lot
- 3:55better, but they had about almost, not quite less than
- 4:03half, less than 50% of their kings.
- 4:06I didn't 8 out of 19 kings had something good said about them.
- 4:11So there were 19 kings of Judah. They had much longer reigns.
- 4:16The the better ones had longer reigns.
- 4:19But actually that's that's not fully true because it looks like
- 4:22some of the evil ones had really long reigns as well.
- 4:26But Israel was conquered by Assyria and then Judah was
- 4:34conquered by Babylon, and both of these places, the, the
- 4:41separated tribes, both of them were conquered because of their
- 4:45disobedience to God. So just before, like I said,
- 4:50most of the kings of Israel, all of the kings of Israel, there
- 4:52were 18 of them. Jehu was the mixed 1.
- 4:56He did good and evil, good only because he was pronouncing God's
- 4:59judgement. But they were conquered by
- 5:01Assyria and that happened much earlier.
- 5:04That was in around 722 on this timeline that I have in front of
- 5:08me, 722 BC. So they were conquered first and
- 5:13then the kings of Judah, they, Jerusalem fell.
- 5:19So let's go back to the kings of Israel.
- 5:21Their capital was Slimeria and the capital in for Judah was
- 5:26Jerusalem. So they had Jerusalem.
- 5:29The kings of Judah had 19 and eight of them were considered.
- 5:34You know, there was something good that was said about them.
- 5:36They were conquered by Babylon. But they did, you know, the same
- 5:39things that Israel did. They committed the same kind of,
- 5:44you know, crime's a guess of God, if you want to call it
- 5:47that. And so during this time, and
- 5:51this is applicable because later on in the New Testament, it
- 5:55tells us, you know, there are parables that are talked about
- 5:58how God sent prophets. So during the time of this evil
- 6:02reign and these like 2 separated factions it within Israel, the
- 6:10northern tribes, the 10 northern tribes and the 2 southern
- 6:14tribes, they God sent prophets to turn people back to God.
- 6:21So they were just getting out of control and God started speaking
- 6:24to people and placing them in with all the people who were not
- 6:31obedient to God. And so the first one that's
- 6:36identified in the study Bible was Elijah.
- 6:40And Elijah was, you know, he was.
- 6:43He was certainly one that I think it was.
- 6:46Yeah. During the time of Ahab, Ahab
- 6:49was the king of Israel. He was married to Jezebel.
- 6:53I think a lot of people who studied have heard of Jezebel.
- 6:57And she pretty much ruled everything.
- 6:59He seemed like a weaker one that just responded to her, but he
- 7:03didn't ever stand up to her. And it was just like their whole
- 7:07family got decimated because of their evilness that was in there
- 7:10and none of them would repent. And that was God gave them
- 7:13opportunities. Jezebel's even talked about in
- 7:16the Book of Revelation that she would have been saved if she had
- 7:20repented, but she wouldn't repent of her sins.
- 7:23So anyway, during this time, and Jezebel was the one that was
- 7:28trying to kill all of the Lord's prophets.
- 7:31So there were others besides these people that were named and
- 7:36there were also false prophets back at that time too, because
- 7:39there were prophets, people that got information from evil from
- 7:44Bale, which is something evil, an evil spirit behind that.
- 7:50And I think it was Elijah had the showdown between the
- 7:55prophets of God and the prophets of Bale and the prophets of God.
- 7:59Well, he was the last one because Jezebel had been killing
- 8:02off all of them, but he was the only one.
- 8:04And there were hundreds, I believe of prophets that were
- 8:08from Bale. And so they were having a
- 8:10showdown between an offering and who's who's God would actually
- 8:16light the fire. And of course that was Elijah's
- 8:21did because Elijah was the true God and the other is a false
- 8:25God. And so then a lot of the false
- 8:28prophets were actually killed at that point, but God protected
- 8:32Elijah. Elijah has a very interesting
- 8:34story that we read about where he was Ravens provided food for
- 8:39him. There was a woman who provided
- 8:41food for him. He actually healed through God.
- 8:46He healed, you know, this is like back in the Old Testament
- 8:49before the Holy Spirit came upon.
- 8:51So this is really interesting because I don't, when I think
- 8:55about this, I think I don't know if we really are taught
- 8:59properly. The Holy Spirit certainly did
- 9:01come to the apostles at a certain time.
- 9:04But when you look back in the book of Elijah, he prayed to God
- 9:08and the Son of this woman was healed.
- 9:13I think he had actually died, and he was actually healed
- 9:17through God, but God used him. So there were these miracles in
- 9:23the Old Testament as well, not as frequent as what happened in
- 9:28the New Testament. So this is, you know, just
- 9:30evidence of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, being present in
- 9:34our world from the beginning. It talks about the Spirit
- 9:38hovered over the waters. And so like at the creation, the
- 9:43Holy Spirit has been active in the world, and it's a matter of
- 9:50whether we are aligned with God, if we receive the Holy Spirit,
- 9:54or if we are unprotected by God and subject to being influenced
- 10:01by the evil spirits that we don't see but do affect us.
- 10:05And anyone who's found the Holy Spirit, their eyes have been
- 10:09opened and they look back on their lives and they see how
- 10:13evil has influenced them in the past because things that are not
- 10:17of God, things that have been that have happened in people's
- 10:22lives. So there's there's definitely
- 10:24evidence of that anyway. So Elijah was taken up to God.
- 10:29He didn't have a humanly death, a death like we know he was
- 10:34taken up. And people apparently knew about
- 10:37it. Because when I was reading in
- 10:39detail the account of it, I think there were like 500 people
- 10:42who were standing along and saw him go up into the clouds.
- 10:48And he gave Elijah the power that he had.
- 10:53Elijah asked to have double the portion, double the power that
- 10:57Elijah had. And Eli, Elijah told him, if you
- 11:01see me going into the clouds, I believe then you will receive
- 11:05that. And he did see that and did get
- 11:08power. And then he was a prophet who
- 11:11kind of took the place of Elijah.
- 11:13So God pulled Elijah up out of this earth and then Elijah was
- 11:19his the the next in line who, you know, did those things after
- 11:25Elijah was gone. So then the very next prophet
- 11:29that is talked about is Jonah. And I think I always, you know,
- 11:34I didn't really know where Jonah was placed.
- 11:37I think about, you know, the the spreading of the gospel, but
- 11:40this is not the spreading of the gospel with Jonah.
- 11:44We have to remember what this time frame was.
- 11:46And I'm saying this for my own benefit too, because I was
- 11:49thinking it was, it was something or you know, later on
- 11:53in the Bible, but it is in the Old Testament and it occurred,
- 11:59it's in this block around between 790 BC and 770 BC.
- 12:05So, and it was during the reign of there were two different
- 12:08kings that are listed in here in this chart.
- 12:10It's Jehoash or Jeroboam the second.
- 12:15And those were the kings of Israel.
- 12:18And then the kings of Judah were Amaziah during when this
- 12:24happened with Jonah. And so we will start with Jonah
- 12:29and then we will go to Amos Hosea.
- 12:33These are the sequence of how they were coming about and when
- 12:36they were written. Then we'll go to we, I believe
- 12:40we read. No, we didn't read Micah.
- 12:42So we'll read Micah. We'll read Isaiah Nahum was
- 12:47next, Zephaniah was next, Jeremiah was next, Habakkuk was
- 12:52next, then Daniel, then Ezekiel. And let's see, I think that's
- 12:58that's the end. Yeah.
- 13:00Daniel kind of continues way past Ezekiel, but from start to
- 13:04finish, like when they came into sight.
- 13:07So that's what that's kind of what's coming up next.
- 13:10We're going to jump around in the Bible.
- 13:12We're going to do things in order and cover this time frame.
- 13:17So it probably would have been good if we would have read about
- 13:19the kings and then gone and read about the prophets too.
- 13:22But I didn't notice this chart in my study Bible to guide me in
- 13:26that. So we'll just go in the order of
- 13:30these and we'll talk about who were the kings at the time.
- 13:32So we kind of get a placement of what they're talking about
- 13:37because it's really hard, challenging at times to realize,
- 13:42is this something that they were prophesying that happened, that
- 13:46was revealed, and then it happened during the time that
- 13:49they were living? Or was this a future prophecy?
- 13:53Now some of them we can certainly tell that they are
- 13:56definitely future prophecies, for example, future prophecies
- 14:00that we haven't even seen yet. We're told by these people, you
- 14:06know, several thousands of years ago and they still have not all
- 14:12come through fruition, but a lot of them have.
- 14:14So the prophets, the book of the prophets is going, not really
- 14:18the book, but all the different prophets will be interesting to
- 14:22go through, especially for me now because I have a much better
- 14:26understanding having this is like the second time I'm going
- 14:30into a really deep study of the Bible and I had already been
- 14:33through the New Testament, but I wanted to start at the Old
- 14:36Testament and continue. So this is my second time.
- 14:40But the first time that I read the Bible was pretty much like a
- 14:42broad overview. And then I've been studying it
- 14:44since and now I'm doing, as you can tell from the podcast, some
- 14:49of them are half 1/2 an hour, Some of them are an hour for a
- 14:53chapter or maybe a couple chapters that they're really
- 14:56short. So we're going really deep into
- 14:59the word on on these podcasts. So if this interests you, follow
- 15:05this podcast and join in. I'm going to try to do these
- 15:08mostly every day and we'll get through the whole, my goal is to
- 15:13get through the Bible a second time and to read every book in a
- 15:16very great detail. So hope you stick around for
- 15:20this or just jump in whenever you have time.
