- 0:24Speaker 3: The World Cup is over for the US national team.
- 0:26Speaker 3: They weren't as good as they looked against lesser competition
- 0:29Speaker 3: earlier in the tournament. Yet they aren't as bad as
- 0:32Speaker 3: they played last night before another massive sellout, roaring World
- 0:36Speaker 3: Cup crowd at Loomenfield.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Clip along her long run for Tressaw brings it down.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Freeman out to meet him.
- 0:42Speaker 5: Now, Freeman blocks the cross, prevents the corner. It's infield
- 0:47Speaker 5: the US it's hesitating about. Siball picked up in the
- 0:50Speaker 5: box and that's the opening goal for Belgian. It was
- 0:52Speaker 5: the Kattalara first to react in there on the cross.
- 0:56Speaker 5: The UF players froze defensively and now they are in
- 0:59Speaker 5: an early.
- 1:00Speaker 6: Hole against Belgium.
- 1:02Speaker 5: Cussard to the batline, gets across into Cattillar's rising up
- 1:06Speaker 5: and Belgium retake the lead. Moments later charge to Kettilara
- 1:10Speaker 5: climbs the ladder his second goal and the US right
- 1:14Speaker 5: back where they were Richard's beating out of the air.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Freeze's got to get there and deal with it. He
- 1:19Speaker 5: takes it down off the chest to Cattalara, knocks it away.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Tim Reim can't block it, and a less video review
- 1:27Speaker 5: says this is a foul from behind on Reem. It
- 1:30Speaker 5: is a disastrous third goal to concede to Belgium.
- 1:35Speaker 6: It didn't Vr didn't save him.
- 1:37Speaker 3: That third goal was the killer. That was John Strong
- 1:40Speaker 3: and Stu Holding on Fox Sports and iHeartRadio last night.
- 1:44Speaker 6: The third goal.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Matt Freeze just got his cleat stuck in the grass.
- 1:48Speaker 7: Such a shame.
- 1:49Speaker 6: It was two one at the time.
- 1:50Speaker 3: In about the fifty sixth minute, United States chance to
- 1:53Speaker 3: come back gone Chris Richards, another mistake in the back
- 1:58Speaker 3: line and the fourth goal by Romeo Lukaku an extra
- 2:02Speaker 3: added time of the second half. It didn't matter by
- 2:04Speaker 3: then for one to Belgium. Belgium versus Spain Friday in
- 2:08Speaker 3: the World Cup quarterfinals. Rondo sixteens continuing right now, and
- 2:12Speaker 3: what in the name of Dierra Maradona is going on
- 2:15Speaker 3: in Atlanta this morning. It's crazy what Egypt is doing
- 2:22Speaker 3: to Argentina. They leave one nil at the half. Lionel
- 2:25Speaker 3: Messi was denied on a penalty kick by the twenty
- 2:29Speaker 3: six year old Egyptian keeper. It was not a good
- 2:36Speaker 3: half for Argentina. Three or four other saves by a shaber.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Is twenty six years old.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I saw him for Egypt against Iran and against Belgium
- 2:45Speaker 3: in draws here in Seattle. He was brilliant. Then he's
- 2:48Speaker 3: even brilliant. Brilliant or if that's a word, I just
- 2:52Speaker 3: made it out.
- 2:53Speaker 8: Let's listen to it all just by it.
- 3:01Speaker 6: I've gone from yes Abrahim the.
- 3:06Speaker 8: Argentina hucket and then, as you mentioned, this happened.
- 3:12Speaker 9: Messi four times successful in penalties at a World Cup,
- 3:16Speaker 9: all of those last time around, but he has missed
- 3:19Speaker 9: three in his World Cup history. And he's facing town
- 3:23Speaker 9: with staff of shopier to his dad as a goalkeeper
- 3:29Speaker 9: won one hundred and seven caps, famously involved in that
- 3:31Speaker 9: Neil Niligan started.
- 3:32Speaker 7: At the nineteen ninety World Cup.
- 3:37Speaker 9: Big big moments chance for Argentina to get right back
- 3:39Speaker 9: on terms Messi tonight by show Beer and the two
- 3:46Speaker 9: big moments early on in quick chire succession.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Egypt's center back scoring and then Shabir the goalkeeper
- 3:52Speaker 3: jumping before Messi even shot the ball. He was guessing
- 3:55Speaker 3: and guessing hard and guessing right. Messi denied him in
- 3:58Speaker 3: the fourth time in his World Cup street austraighted down
- 4:02Speaker 3: one nail at the half to Egypt. Later today in
- 4:04Speaker 3: the rest of the Round of sixteen Columbia Switzerland this
- 4:07Speaker 3: afternoon in Vancouver, then a rest day of marve ball.
- 4:10Speaker 3: No World Cup matches tomorrow Thursday. They'll be on right
- 4:13Speaker 3: on our show. We're going to lead right into Thursday's
- 4:15Speaker 3: Round of eight. Friday, same thing here on ninety three
- 4:18Speaker 3: point three KJRFM. The Mariners are off fline to Miami
- 4:20Speaker 3: for a three game series against the Marlins. Then he
- 4:23Speaker 3: got for a Tampa Bay to take them to the
- 4:24Speaker 3: All Star Break. Brian Wu trying to solve his road
- 4:27Speaker 3: start issues for the ms at three forty today, but
- 4:29Speaker 3: he's against the Marlins. Ace Max Meyers nine to one
- 4:32Speaker 3: with a two point five three ERA sales coach Mike McDonald,
- 4:35Speaker 3: gentlemaner John Schneider, players Leonard Williams, A. J.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Barnard, Byron Russell Brian.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Russell were all at the World Cup match at Bloomingfield
- 4:42Speaker 3: last night. Mc doon got on the PA just before
- 4:45Speaker 3: the national anthem and said, we did not care. I
- 4:46Speaker 3: don't know if they showed that on the broadcast.
- 4:48Speaker 7: I didn't see it, but I still love that he
- 4:51Speaker 7: leaned into it.
- 4:52Speaker 3: The fans were crazy. Seahawks rookiees A Doe to report
- 4:55Speaker 3: the training game in eleven day of July seventeen. Veterans
- 4:58Speaker 3: July twenty four first practice the Virginia Mason Athletic Center
- 5:01Speaker 3: and rent of training campus July twenty fifth will be
- 5:03Speaker 3: there now on with the Tuesday Show with Jessin Desmond MacIntyre,
- 5:07Speaker 3: Greg Beow, as we are every weekday from ten am
- 5:09Speaker 3: to noon on the post Mortem of the United States,
- 5:13Speaker 3: Thud Dud I should say, out of the World Cup
- 5:16Speaker 3: last night here in Seattle, we're gonna break a ton
- 5:19Speaker 3: of that down.
- 5:20Speaker 7: It sustincts.
- 5:21Speaker 3: It was bad, and they were Belgium was great. Belgium
- 5:26Speaker 3: obviously better than anybody the US had played to that point.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Obviously Belgium is head and shoulders above them, and development
- 5:34Speaker 3: and depth and skill. Oh yes, and we're gonna describe
- 5:37Speaker 3: a root cause of that. We're gonna get into that.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I've mentioned it many times on this show. You have
- 5:41Speaker 3: listened to me for a while. You understand I've lived
- 5:44Speaker 3: through this. I've paid tens of thousands of dollars because
- 5:47Speaker 3: of our US soccer development system. You fucker it ain't working.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yesterday was yet another example of that. At ten twenty,
- 5:56Speaker 3: We're gonna talk to our man, mas Vita mary Aarra.
- 5:59Speaker 3: He was sitting right in front of me in the
- 6:00Speaker 3: press box last night at Lumenfield shaking his head and
- 6:03Speaker 3: the summation of his thoughts of the US and afterwards,
- 6:08Speaker 3: I mean the players coach Pochettino. Tyler Adams was pretty
- 6:12Speaker 3: blunt when he said we let the whole country down. Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 3: you're gonna hear from Tyler Adams in a moment about that.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Does Marisa Pochettino want to stick around for another four
- 6:22Speaker 3: years to coach US team through qualifying? Twenty thirty World
- 6:26Speaker 3: Cup is in Morocco. It's not an automatic like this
- 6:28Speaker 3: one was that the US qualifies US. Canada and Mexico
- 6:31Speaker 3: qualified for this one because they were hosting it. Remember,
- 6:34Speaker 3: it's not a fat to complete. The United States qualifies
- 6:36Speaker 3: for every World Cup. It is about eight years ago
- 6:38Speaker 3: that they didn't even beat Trinidad and Tobago to get
- 6:40Speaker 3: into the World Cup. They lost the qualifying match and
- 6:42Speaker 3: did not qualify. Yeah, well, of course they had to
- 6:45Speaker 3: play two countries Trinidad and Tobago at the same time.
- 6:48Speaker 8: I mean, when you get that kind of combo, right, Yeah,
- 6:51Speaker 8: of course they were able to overcome that last week
- 6:53Speaker 8: and beat Bosniy and Herzegovin at the same time.
- 6:55Speaker 3: But provided that FIFA over the way the World Cup
- 6:59Speaker 3: lines up qualifying Morocco, that you don't have to play
- 7:01Speaker 3: two countries again to qualify in one time, maybe the
- 7:03Speaker 3: United States will qualify. And I'm Pochattino answered that question
- 7:08Speaker 3: last night after the match. You'll hear from him about
- 7:09Speaker 3: that eleven o'clock RMN Gary Hill Jr. He's with the
- 7:13Speaker 3: Mariners in Miami. Just took the longest intercontinental flight you
- 7:16Speaker 3: can take, I think between two cities in the US
- 7:19Speaker 3: to Miami for the United States, the United States. For
- 7:23Speaker 3: the Mariners in Marlins, three point forty is the first.
- 7:25Speaker 8: I mean, and can we they're the Mariners, they are
- 7:29Speaker 8: the US team.
- 7:30Speaker 7: Yes, I'm just gonna claim that for them.
- 7:32Speaker 3: You might be the only one who's ever said that, Hey.
- 7:35Speaker 7: Here we go breaking ground over.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Here the country's baseball team. Most of the country don't
- 7:42Speaker 3: even know the maritors who they are.
- 7:43Speaker 7: Well, that's their problem.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Eleven thirty, we were back your text and the Tacomadad's
- 7:48Speaker 3: text on four nine, four to five one, as we
- 7:49Speaker 3: do every day at that time. My first question is
- 7:52Speaker 3: are you done with soccer now until four years from now?
- 7:55Speaker 3: Wake me up when the World Cup comes back around
- 7:57Speaker 3: and the US is in it.
- 7:58Speaker 7: Oh?
- 7:58Speaker 6: Is that zai feel? I feel a lot of either.
- 8:01Speaker 6: Do I do?
- 8:02Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 8:02Speaker 3: I know a lot of people were watching last night
- 8:04Speaker 3: who don't do not watch soccer.
- 8:06Speaker 8: I went out with people that I don't regularly hang
- 8:08Speaker 8: out with and it was awesome.
- 8:10Speaker 7: I hung out with them for the first game. I
- 8:11Speaker 7: hung out with them for.
- 8:12Speaker 8: The second game and it was amazing. They're my gym friends. Hi, Jeff,
- 8:19Speaker 8: he's a regular listener.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Thanks Jeff.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Yes, But anyway, I feel like it really brought people together,
- 8:26Speaker 8: and I feel that way every time the World Cup
- 8:28Speaker 8: comes around. But I can be completely honest. I'm not
- 8:32Speaker 8: a regular soccer You're not alone.
- 8:34Speaker 3: You're not alone. Hundreds of millions aren't. Is the reason
- 8:37Speaker 3: why FIFA puts it in this spot in the calendar. Well,
- 8:41Speaker 3: mostly because the European and South American major soccer leagues
- 8:46Speaker 3: have paused. Their schedules are around this and they pause
- 8:49Speaker 3: and they don't have their between seasons. This is their
- 8:51Speaker 3: off season. Yeah, they have to play the preseason. But
- 8:53Speaker 3: the other reason is the US soccer or the US
- 8:55Speaker 3: sporting television audience has something that they could watch in July.
- 8:59Speaker 7: Yeah, star Break is coming up.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Baseball is the only thing going right now WNBA and
- 9:03Speaker 3: baseball is about it.
- 9:05Speaker 8: Ye.
- 9:05Speaker 3: NFL hasn't started yet, College football won't begin for another month,
- 9:09Speaker 3: so this is the window and that is a larger
- 9:11Speaker 3: reason why it's And there was a big to do
- 9:14Speaker 3: and when it was in Cutter about whether because of
- 9:16Speaker 3: the heat they couldn't have it in July, So how
- 9:18Speaker 3: was it going to affect TV ratings? And they were
- 9:20Speaker 3: There was a little later in the summer and it dipped.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I can't remember what months the last World Cup.
- 9:25Speaker 8: And cut but I just remember all the awful things
- 9:29Speaker 8: that were happening in Cutter.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Yes, yes, to build the stadiums and whatnot. But my
- 9:34Speaker 3: question on the text line are you done with soccer
- 9:36Speaker 3: until the World Cup comes back. Hey, Tyler Adams gets
- 9:40Speaker 3: at the midfielder. Last night, one of their best players
- 9:43Speaker 3: was one of the many who did not show up
- 9:45Speaker 3: at all against Belgium in their biggest moment of their
- 9:47Speaker 3: soccer lives. He understands how you may feel this morning
- 9:51Speaker 3: about US soccer. He talked about this last night.
- 9:54Speaker 10: I think our initial reaction as a team was in
- 9:58Speaker 10: this moment we let them down. But I think altogether
- 10:02Speaker 10: people gravitated towards the team because we were relatable who
- 10:05Speaker 10: represented exactly what the US was.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Today wasn't a good day.
- 10:09Speaker 10: I think from a performance, you can analyze the performance,
- 10:11Speaker 10: you can analyze a lot of things, but the togetherness
- 10:13Speaker 10: of the group, how we competed in large parts of
- 10:17Speaker 10: the tournament I think was really good. So yeah, it's
- 10:20Speaker 10: tough to judge right now the overall tournament, obviously after
- 10:23Speaker 10: a loss, but I think overall there were positives that
- 10:28Speaker 10: we're going to take away from.
- 10:28Speaker 3: It just doesn't kill an that's a difference between the
- 10:31Speaker 3: NFL and any other sport. In the World Cup Soccer match,
- 10:35Speaker 3: the NFL, oh, we left the city down. Seahawks lose
- 10:37Speaker 3: playoff game one. We let the city down, Our fans
- 10:40Speaker 3: done well, cut players lose, They left the whole country
- 10:43Speaker 3: down and in this case three hundred and twenty million people.
- 10:46Speaker 3: That's how Tyler Adams said the vack room felt. Pochataino,
- 10:50Speaker 3: the coach last night, said how much of the Americans
- 10:51Speaker 3: have improved since one year ago in last summer's World Cup.
- 10:54Speaker 6: That's encouraging.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Right when he took over the program and Greg Berholter
- 10:58Speaker 3: was leaving and there were some disarray and is still
- 11:00Speaker 3: the sting of two World Cups will go not qualifying,
- 11:03Speaker 3: So that's improvement. But last night obviously showed how far
- 11:07Speaker 3: the US remains behind the world's best soccer programs. The
- 11:10Speaker 3: reason the US youth and development system in this country,
- 11:15Speaker 3: it's a pay for play system. If you don't have
- 11:18Speaker 3: the money and the means, you're not gonna get seen.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And I know there are academy programs in the MLS
- 11:22Speaker 3: next programs that are now free for the players who
- 11:25Speaker 3: get into those, but the only way you can get
- 11:26Speaker 3: noticed to get into those is if you have the
- 11:28Speaker 3: money to get into the notice group.
- 11:31Speaker 6: There are not just.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Guys walking down the street and gals walking down the Street,
- 11:34Speaker 3: who played for the US national men's and women's soccer teams,
- 11:37Speaker 3: like there are in Brazil, like they're in Belgium. More
- 11:40Speaker 3: to the point, their development programs are based on money,
- 11:43Speaker 3: and the administrators and the coaches getting rich from them,
- 11:46Speaker 3: and tournament organizers who charge exorbitant fees, and the hotel
- 11:49Speaker 3: owners who charged four hundred dollars a night to parents
- 11:52Speaker 3: to have to foot the bill if they want to
- 11:53Speaker 3: go play in the Surf Cup in San Diego. I
- 11:56Speaker 3: could go on and on to the break of dawn
- 11:58Speaker 3: about this, and he ended up getting a college soccer
- 12:02Speaker 3: scholarship to play Division two soccer his freshman year of
- 12:05Speaker 3: high school. He played at the academy level for Crossfire Academy.
- 12:09Speaker 3: The rules of the US Academy, they're called the Development
- 12:12Speaker 3: DA at the time. It's now switched and it's now
- 12:15Speaker 3: MLS owns the academy system. But the DA system at
- 12:18Speaker 3: the time said he could not play for his high
- 12:21Speaker 3: school varsity soccer team because you were too good and
- 12:26Speaker 3: you didn't want to risk injury or guys hacking you.
- 12:29Speaker 6: And that was the theory. So they couldn't play with
- 12:31Speaker 6: their friends. That was jarring. I paid twenty thout.
- 12:35Speaker 3: My wife and I thanks, I should say my wife
- 12:38Speaker 3: and I twenty thousand dollars we paid that year his
- 12:41Speaker 3: freshman year of high school to play academy level soccer.
- 12:45Speaker 3: They would travel to the Netherlands to play in Belgium
- 12:48Speaker 3: and Germany. He played in Tijuana. He played all over
- 12:50Speaker 3: the world, but for twenty thousand dollars, sometimes on a
- 12:54Speaker 3: week's notice. Hey, we're leaving. You got to miss class
- 12:56Speaker 3: for a week because we're going to Amsterdam. What this
- 12:59Speaker 3: gives a high school student he's trying to go to
- 13:01Speaker 3: college twenty thousand dollars And I'm just one of many, many,
- 13:06Speaker 3: many who did that for many.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Many, many years, and who's still doing it for what?
- 13:11Speaker 6: You pay that money? And guess what the promises.
- 13:13Speaker 3: You'll get a college scholarship to play soccer if you're
- 13:15Speaker 3: playing at this level. If you don't get the MLLs academy, well,
- 13:18Speaker 3: guess what those college scholarships are now being taken by
- 13:20Speaker 3: foreign players or they've been dried up because you're now
- 13:24Speaker 3: allowed to transfer and nil and everything else in the
- 13:26Speaker 3: top college programs in the country will just take transfer.
- 13:28Speaker 6: From other college.
- 13:29Speaker 7: Yeah. Well now, yeah, so.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Now the teenagers don't have a spot. So you're paying
- 13:32Speaker 3: twenty thousand dollars a year for a black hole for
- 13:35Speaker 3: no opportunity that's promised to you. Because there are no
- 13:38Speaker 3: opportunities in college soccer for the US soccer player. And
- 13:41Speaker 3: if you don't get picked up for a US national
- 13:43Speaker 3: team or an MLS club, what do you do? You
- 13:47Speaker 3: just go be a college student. Yeah, that's what's happening,
- 13:50Speaker 3: not just.
- 13:50Speaker 6: But in baseball, but in basketball.
- 13:53Speaker 3: It's happening all over sports, and all basketball, baseball, AAU
- 13:56Speaker 3: that's all pay for play as well. Soccer is one
- 13:59Speaker 3: of many programs that is broken in this country because
- 14:01Speaker 3: of greed. And when you want to know why the
- 14:04Speaker 3: US isn't as good as other countries in soccer, go
- 14:06Speaker 3: right there. The pay for play system and development by
- 14:09Speaker 3: Zieta Marrera. He coaches in the youth soccer system in
- 14:12Speaker 3: middle school.
- 14:12Speaker 6: He knows all about this.
- 14:13Speaker 3: He's going to join us next on ninety three point
- 14:15Speaker 3: three KJRFM.
- 14:44Speaker 6: Welcome Mack, Greg bel.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Jessman McIntyre with you live on ninety three point three KJARFM.
- 14:49Speaker 3: They're under a var review in Atlanta, but if a
- 14:52Speaker 3: call stands, the defending champion. Argentinians are down.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Two nil to Egypt.
- 14:58Speaker 3: In the round of sixteen in Atlanta. That's crazy. Sixtieth
- 15:01Speaker 3: minute Egypt just scored. They're taking off their shirts on
- 15:05Speaker 3: the pitch of Egyptian fans in the stands are crying.
- 15:09Speaker 3: They can't believe what's happening here. It was on a
- 15:12Speaker 3: counter of a play that's been reviewed for a possible foul.
- 15:15Speaker 3: At the other end, here we go with VR reofficiating
- 15:18Speaker 3: the game, reofficiating the game. A true muz Vita mari
- 15:27Speaker 3: Era of Cascadia sports Net is watching this too. He's
- 15:31Speaker 3: going to join us to talk about the World Cup
- 15:33Speaker 3: at large. He's going to talk about the US game
- 15:35Speaker 3: he was in last night in the press box with
- 15:37Speaker 3: me in Seattle. I have a feeling FIFA pushed a
- 15:40Speaker 3: VAR button to make sure this goal didn't count, because
- 15:42Speaker 3: the referee, just after looking at VR, waved it off.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yet another example of VAR. When the referee goes to
- 15:49Speaker 3: the screen, it's over, it's going to be changed.
- 15:51Speaker 6: It was changed.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Egypt remains up on Argentina just one nil instead of
- 15:55Speaker 3: two nil. Uh.
- 16:01Speaker 6: FIFA is a cartel. I will say that.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Murray, thank you man, thanks for joining us Your Life
- 16:07Speaker 3: one kg R and the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
- 16:09Speaker 11: How you doing Serve, I'm great, Thanks for having me.
- 16:12Speaker 12: Uh so it's a pleasure, uh to be on there
- 16:16Speaker 12: with you, Pop Soccer and jes Me.
- 16:18Speaker 11: You know, she's the host with the most so.
- 16:22Speaker 8: Oh ma, thank you. We have a secret handshake, so
- 16:26Speaker 8: it's very efficient.
- 16:27Speaker 6: He tells me about this. I feel out.
- 16:30Speaker 7: You got to be there, to be there.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Now that I'm back in the studio, Yes, now that
- 16:36Speaker 3: I'm back in the studio, I can see Jessamine blessing
- 16:38Speaker 3: when when people.
- 16:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll teach it to grind. Okay, maybe we can
- 16:42Speaker 7: do a three ways.
- 16:43Speaker 6: I don't have that swerve.
- 16:45Speaker 11: Maybe not.
- 16:48Speaker 7: It's got to be. It's got to be, Arthur.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not as are as I was grinding last
- 16:55Speaker 3: night and finishing my story in four videos that are
- 16:57Speaker 3: at the News Tribune dot Com.
- 16:59Speaker 6: You were walking out, you were kind of shaking your head.
- 17:01Speaker 3: How did you feel about that whole performance, whole scene,
- 17:06Speaker 3: whole event last night.
- 17:09Speaker 12: Well, I mean I think the scene was incredible, right,
- 17:12Speaker 12: you and I walked in the stands a little bit
- 17:16Speaker 12: and got to feel so the atmosphere was, you know, electric,
- 17:21Speaker 12: It's one of those I always say, like, think of
- 17:23Speaker 12: your favorite concert that you ever went to that you
- 17:26Speaker 12: saved your ticket the first one and you were not disappointed.
- 17:31Speaker 11: Right, So that was the build up.
- 17:34Speaker 12: I don't know, you know, I thought the crowd wasn't
- 17:37Speaker 12: as educated as I thought they could have been, if.
- 17:40Speaker 11: You know what I mean.
- 17:42Speaker 12: They were waiting for something to happen once the game started,
- 17:46Speaker 12: as opposed to like forcing something to happen.
- 17:50Speaker 11: I think that's different, right, we see with.
- 17:53Speaker 12: The Seahawks and certain crowds, but I mean they they
- 17:56Speaker 12: part of it. Lost of the United States. Did not
- 17:58Speaker 12: give them something to you know, to cheer. Masterclass and
- 18:02Speaker 12: how do you take the crowd out on the road
- 18:05Speaker 12: by Rudy Garcia and Belgium. Right, you get that early
- 18:09Speaker 12: shot on there and obviously the goal and by then
- 18:11Speaker 12: that's what I mean, the crowd was pensive.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Anthony Robinson said exactly that. By the way, mosviden the
- 18:17Speaker 3: mix on last night, Anthony Robinson, one of the defenders
- 18:20Speaker 3: who had such a tough night, said we didn't give
- 18:22Speaker 3: the crowd anything to cheer about. Tyler Adams said the
- 18:26Speaker 3: same thing. I'm sorry I interrupted, but yes, they could
- 18:31Speaker 3: have scored twice in the first ninety seconds. It was
- 18:34Speaker 3: as bad as Freeze was last night. He actually made
- 18:37Speaker 3: a brilliant save diving to his right and knocking the
- 18:39Speaker 3: ball away in the first minute of the game, and
- 18:41Speaker 3: then thirty seconds later another one that went out high.
- 18:44Speaker 3: And just why the what did Belgium? Where are they
- 18:49Speaker 3: just superior? Where were they superior last night? I'm of
- 18:52Speaker 3: the belief the US was not is not as bad
- 18:55Speaker 3: as they played last night, Yet they were not nearly
- 18:58Speaker 3: as good as their first few matches because of who
- 19:00Speaker 3: they played.
- 19:03Speaker 12: Sure, I think that Belgium is a tested team, right,
- 19:10Speaker 12: and they were also That's the thing about the World Cup,
- 19:13Speaker 12: right once you get into the round of thirty two
- 19:14Speaker 12: or sixteen, some of these teams, you know, this is
- 19:17Speaker 12: the Golden generation that was also on its way, a
- 19:20Speaker 12: team that's in transition.
- 19:22Speaker 11: You got some young players coming on there, you have
- 19:25Speaker 11: some old one.
- 19:27Speaker 12: You know, Lukaku de Bryner that was you know, this
- 19:30Speaker 12: is probably the last World Cup. I thought that Rudy
- 19:34Speaker 12: Garcia made some tactical changes pregame, and I'm not sure
- 19:40Speaker 12: that Potaccino saw those or adjusted right. Nathany mcgoy started
- 19:46Speaker 12: his center back yep right and then ahead of him,
- 19:49Speaker 12: I mean, I'm gonna do Nan was paired with Nicholas
- 19:54Speaker 12: Raskin in the middle, and then Hans Vanikin was brought
- 19:58Speaker 12: in for Kevin de Bruyner, and then.
- 20:04Speaker 11: Jeremy Duck who sat on the bench to start off.
- 20:07Speaker 12: Now, okay, so what does all that mean is he
- 20:10Speaker 12: went to a more I think Tilliman was the key.
- 20:13Speaker 11: He as in Garcia, brought.
- 20:15Speaker 13: In a lineup that was more to be offensive and
- 20:20Speaker 13: hold on to the ball and yet be attacking right
- 20:23Speaker 13: in that middle right, and the key was Tillaman because
- 20:28Speaker 13: if you notice on that the goal.
- 20:33Speaker 12: They went to the right, Belgium was attacking from the
- 20:38Speaker 12: right side and using Lukami who going down there and
- 20:41Speaker 12: also on On before he got injured.
- 20:44Speaker 11: So what did that do?
- 20:46Speaker 12: That kept Palistic inside and also Tillerman. So then for
- 20:50Speaker 12: the United States, so then they couldn't use the United
- 20:52Speaker 12: States couldn't use the width that they needed to get
- 20:56Speaker 12: down and spread the Belgium defense.
- 20:59Speaker 11: And and look, Tillman was just incredible.
- 21:02Speaker 12: His ability to take the ball from the right, switch
- 21:06Speaker 12: it and go to the left was really the difference.
- 21:09Speaker 12: And it also kind of Froze Tyler Adams yep. And
- 21:14Speaker 12: I think that's why he wasn't so effective. So maybe
- 21:18Speaker 12: you might have put Adams, you might have put Tilliman
- 21:22Speaker 12: up or next to Adams, but I think Adams was
- 21:25Speaker 12: overran in the midfield each time, and there's nothing that
- 21:28Speaker 12: he really could have done, just because of Belgium's ability
- 21:32Speaker 12: in Tillim's And.
- 21:33Speaker 11: Then you've got your saw it.
- 21:34Speaker 12: On the left right, So now you're on skates for
- 21:39Speaker 12: the midfield and your back line where we saw that
- 21:41Speaker 12: great we just saw you know, it was a bad
- 21:44Speaker 12: day at the office for the back line.
- 21:46Speaker 3: They made the Americans do the one thing they're worse at,
- 21:49Speaker 3: and that's defend tim Ream thirty eight years old. The
- 21:52Speaker 3: captain could not jump with the twenty six year old
- 21:56Speaker 3: number seventeen in the middle, and Killia had his way
- 22:01Speaker 3: for the first two goals. You mentioned Telaman's. He was
- 22:04Speaker 3: the reason that the US got absolutely dominated in the midfield.
- 22:08Speaker 3: So when you got midfield domination and then they're constantly
- 22:10Speaker 3: attacking and pressing and making to defend, you get what
- 22:14Speaker 3: you get. You make a couple of mistakes and defend
- 22:16Speaker 3: when they're shooting it. They had Belgium had eleven shots.
- 22:20Speaker 6: In the first half.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Maz you probably know this. That was more than the
- 22:24Speaker 3: combined number of first half shots in the first four
- 22:26Speaker 3: US matches.
- 22:28Speaker 6: They did it in one half, more than four matches.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Up to that point in the first half.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Of the US I'd only given up ten total first
- 22:35Speaker 3: half shots in their first four World Cup matches, and
- 22:37Speaker 3: they gave up eleven last night. And that dominant. I
- 22:41Speaker 3: mean it was clear. And du Berna didn't even play.
- 22:45Speaker 3: He stayed on the bench of the entire game. Lukaku
- 22:48Speaker 3: didn't come in until midway through the second half when
- 22:50Speaker 3: the game was already over, and then he added.
- 22:52Speaker 6: A goal late.
- 22:53Speaker 3: They did it with the younger you mentioned Doku and
- 22:55Speaker 3: Teelaman's Teelman's the captain, but it was it was different,
- 22:59Speaker 3: and they weren't ready for that. They read the United
- 23:02Speaker 3: States during the tournament had mostly pressed like think of Australia,
- 23:06Speaker 3: and the opponents were trying to rely on counters. Bosnia, Yeah,
- 23:11Speaker 3: not so not so last night.
- 23:12Speaker 6: Masrea Mara is with US.
- 23:14Speaker 3: He's the Cascade of Sports net sounders and World Cup
- 23:17Speaker 3: correspondent for Fox thirteen Sports here in Seattle, Okay. The
- 23:22Speaker 3: bigger existential question is how far is the United States
- 23:26Speaker 3: behind the world's best. His last night indicative of that?
- 23:29Speaker 12: Do you think, uh No, I think you're in the mix,
- 23:35Speaker 12: and you know we're talking second tier here, right, I
- 23:37Speaker 12: mean we're not talking about France. And I mean if
- 23:42Speaker 12: you're saying top five, long way to go top ten?
- 23:46Speaker 11: I think you know. Uni. I think Partatuta said this
- 23:49Speaker 11: as well.
- 23:50Speaker 12: You've got you said you've got some younger players, and
- 23:54Speaker 12: that will be a question.
- 23:55Speaker 11: Here's one.
- 23:57Speaker 12: Andrew Thomas, Right, who are the young goalkeepers that are
- 24:01Speaker 12: coming up in? There? Is Andrew Thomas in that mix.
- 24:04Speaker 12: I'm just swing that out there for the sounders. But
- 24:06Speaker 12: as an example in terms of I think the US
- 24:09Speaker 12: has some up and coming players, you now know that
- 24:14Speaker 12: you need a mixture of both. That is MLS players young,
- 24:20Speaker 12: not the old ones, right, And then you also need
- 24:22Speaker 12: you players to go play overseas.
- 24:24Speaker 11: So you can do it one or.
- 24:26Speaker 12: Two young MLS players, but you got to get them overseas.
- 24:30Speaker 11: As your includesman said, so I.
- 24:32Speaker 12: Think that in certain positions you're okay, but you need
- 24:36Speaker 12: a pipeline creativity.
- 24:40Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly, let's talk about the pipeline. Majica. You coach
- 24:48Speaker 6: middle school soccer.
- 24:49Speaker 3: You played high school soccer here in Seattle, you coach here,
- 24:51Speaker 3: now you officiate. You've been in soccer for most of
- 24:54Speaker 3: your life here in Seattle, and Seattle is a hotbed
- 24:58Speaker 3: of youth soccer, a hot one of many, but one
- 25:01Speaker 3: of the premier ones the Pacific Northwest in general, for
- 25:03Speaker 3: that matter, Portland as well. I think the pay for
- 25:07Speaker 3: play system is corrupting, bankrupting and subverting anything that the
- 25:12Speaker 3: US National Men's program is trying, and women for that matter.
- 25:15Speaker 3: But the women, it took a while for the world
- 25:17Speaker 3: to catch up to them, and now they have. But
- 25:20Speaker 3: the men's program in particular is just subverted by greed
- 25:24Speaker 3: at the youth sports and academy level soccer. Your opinion
- 25:28Speaker 3: on that. You know, my kids in nice story, and
- 25:32Speaker 3: I've cried to you about this many times. But the
- 25:35Speaker 3: MLS is trying to fix this. The DA program is
- 25:38Speaker 3: gone and the Development Academy is gone, thank goodness for that,
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yet the greed and the pay for play still remain.
- 25:45Speaker 3: You're on the streets of Seattle. Is there a kid
- 25:47Speaker 3: walking down Renier Avenue who's saying, I'm going to go
- 25:49Speaker 3: play soccer? Or is he playing basketball and football and
- 25:53Speaker 3: baseball or anything else because the entry level to get
- 25:56Speaker 3: seen in advance is so much easier.
- 26:01Speaker 11: Let's do this. Let's be real. I've got to give
- 26:04Speaker 11: credit to you as soccer.
- 26:07Speaker 12: And in terms of there are kids of color, black
- 26:10Speaker 12: and browns that are playing.
- 26:11Speaker 11: Yes, right, this is a good answer your question.
- 26:14Speaker 12: So yeah, so when they see Bulligan, when they see Adams, right.
- 26:18Speaker 11: I mean, let's let us have a real conversation, right.
- 26:21Speaker 12: I mean, sure you always had the you know, the
- 26:23Speaker 12: poliitic that type of white players that were there.
- 26:25Speaker 11: That's just I mean, let's let's just call it what
- 26:28Speaker 11: it is.
- 26:28Speaker 12: And that was.
- 26:28Speaker 11: Okay, right, but now you have a mixture.
- 26:31Speaker 12: So yeah, I think some kids really do think about, hey,
- 26:34Speaker 12: I want to play soccer, you know what I mean?
- 26:36Speaker 12: Because I see players now on the national team that
- 26:40Speaker 12: kind of look like me, you know what I mean,
- 26:42Speaker 12: And you have this international approach. But to your point,
- 26:46Speaker 12: how do I get from Rainy and Ferdinand over to
- 26:51Speaker 12: lubid Field, right right? Like you know my little guys
- 26:56Speaker 12: over there at Orca Mills, you know, K through eight,
- 26:58Speaker 12: Like how do I you know, like how I want
- 27:01Speaker 12: to play? So for them, you know, it's that academy.
- 27:05Speaker 12: Do I go academy? Do I go to do I
- 27:09Speaker 12: go college?
- 27:10Speaker 11: Right?
- 27:11Speaker 3: But how do they even get to the academy though,
- 27:13Speaker 3: that's the point. How do they even get to the
- 27:15Speaker 3: ability to get to the academy from orchest middle school?
- 27:19Speaker 12: Well, and that's great, that's the point. That's exactly right, Like,
- 27:23Speaker 12: you know, it's not equal access, right, and.
- 27:25Speaker 11: I don't really know exactly all how it goes.
- 27:28Speaker 12: You know, yeah, you do. And I think that's that's
- 27:32Speaker 12: where now the next level of you or soccer, right
- 27:35Speaker 12: is how do we have multiple entry levels into this
- 27:40Speaker 12: in this melting pot where we give kids, you know,
- 27:44Speaker 12: the talented ones and opportunities.
- 27:46Speaker 11: There's always going to.
- 27:47Speaker 12: Be some the kid that doesn't get that chance. We
- 27:49Speaker 12: know that that's in any sport and everything else. They've
- 27:52Speaker 12: done a good job of representation on you know, the
- 27:56Speaker 12: higher level.
- 27:57Speaker 11: But now to your point, you know, how do you
- 28:00Speaker 11: do that?
- 28:01Speaker 12: I mean, how do you give equal access and knowing
- 28:06Speaker 12: that you've only got X amount of time you know
- 28:08Speaker 12: to produce right and get that pipeline going. I mean
- 28:12Speaker 12: it's I think Germany usually you know, they're now having
- 28:16Speaker 12: to redo that, but they are.
- 28:19Speaker 11: The well yogurt clubs. Now they're coach, but I.
- 28:21Speaker 12: Mean remember with Germany, everybody plays the German system, whether
- 28:26Speaker 12: you're sixth grade or whether.
- 28:28Speaker 11: You're middle school, you know what I mean.
- 28:30Speaker 12: I mean that's that was always how they got to
- 28:32Speaker 12: their prominence.
- 28:34Speaker 11: And so maybe you take a look at that, you know.
- 28:37Speaker 12: I don't know, but there have to be something to that,
- 28:40Speaker 12: that connection of the national team to you know, the
- 28:45Speaker 12: little orca middle school, you know, or.
- 28:48Speaker 3: The clubs, the club coaches and administrators trying to win
- 28:52Speaker 3: something keep their jobs, rather than develop players. They just
- 28:54Speaker 3: try to win tournaments that cost money, and travel that
- 28:57Speaker 3: costs money, and hotels that costs fourundred dollars a night
- 28:59Speaker 3: to go to the surf.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Come.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Jessamin McIntyre is about to ask a question of maz
- 29:03Speaker 3: Vita Morrera Cascadie sports Netfox thirteen, Seattle on ninety three
- 29:06Speaker 3: point three KGr.
- 29:08Speaker 7: Yeah, my handshake, friend, my buddy.
- 29:11Speaker 8: I wanted to ask just having gone through the experience myself,
- 29:14Speaker 8: I had to choose between sports when I was growing up,
- 29:18Speaker 8: and so I feel like there's been a professionalization of
- 29:22Speaker 8: sports that is getting younger and younger, where you can
- 29:25Speaker 8: only play one and I was really mad at soccer
- 29:28Speaker 8: when I was growing up because I played volleyball and
- 29:31Speaker 8: I wanted the best athletes on my team and they
- 29:34Speaker 8: were playing soccer and they weren't allowed to play other sports.
- 29:37Speaker 8: How do you feel about the professionalization of the sport
- 29:40Speaker 8: in general when you can't play others?
- 29:44Speaker 12: Uh, it's it's wrecking the athlete as a whole, and
- 29:49Speaker 12: it shows up once they get to a higher level.
- 29:51Speaker 11: We've heard this. We heard this from Pete Carroll, right.
- 29:55Speaker 12: We hear it from we don't you hear from all
- 29:57Speaker 12: the coaches say no, we want kids to play multiple sports.
- 30:01Speaker 11: The reason that is is that it's twofold, right.
- 30:04Speaker 12: Part of that is you need to understand the humility
- 30:07Speaker 12: of act of playing on a team. Yes, if you
- 30:12Speaker 12: always number one, I'm sorry, there's a point, right, we
- 30:17Speaker 12: know this, right, Like, you can be number one in
- 30:18Speaker 12: middle school or high school and then you get to
- 30:21Speaker 12: a blue chip you know, you get to you know,
- 30:24Speaker 12: a D one school and there is thirty blue chip
- 30:27Speaker 12: players on that team.
- 30:28Speaker 13: You know what I mean?
- 30:29Speaker 11: So now wait a minute.
- 30:30Speaker 12: You know how you're preparing, everything else is different and
- 30:33Speaker 12: you lose that battle. But if you understand what it
- 30:37Speaker 12: takes to be a team player as well as be
- 30:41Speaker 12: the leader of a team.
- 30:42Speaker 11: It'll help you as you go up the rung of
- 30:45Speaker 11: the ladder.
- 30:45Speaker 12: And we know that when you go, the higher you
- 30:48Speaker 12: go up is the less chance of you making it
- 30:52Speaker 12: in any sport. And it becomes mental not so much physical, right.
- 30:58Speaker 8: Right, you're training the whole time for you know, when
- 31:01Speaker 8: you're training for a sport, it doesn't vary that much
- 31:04Speaker 8: the amount of training you're going through, and that the
- 31:08Speaker 8: mental side of it.
- 31:09Speaker 7: Yeah, you're only focusing on one thing.
- 31:12Speaker 12: And then your body is you know, your muscle memory
- 31:15Speaker 12: is a tune to just a certain way of playing, right.
- 31:19Speaker 12: I mean so, but if you I mean people that
- 31:23Speaker 12: you know track is a good one. I think you know,
- 31:25Speaker 12: basketball players play track and you know cross country with soccer,
- 31:30Speaker 12: they'll all kind of help you understand and be creative
- 31:35Speaker 12: when you're on the court. We're also I mean we're
- 31:37Speaker 12: seeing that you have. You know, the thing now is
- 31:40Speaker 12: you got to play two sports. But to answer your question,
- 31:43Speaker 12: I think that it limits your potential growth as you
- 31:47Speaker 12: move up to become a professional athlete. And in soccer, right,
- 31:51Speaker 12: if all you used to is with your left foot
- 31:54Speaker 12: and a certain way, a certain way to run well.
- 31:58Speaker 12: Coach is going to take somebody who can act actually
- 32:00Speaker 12: has to play basketball or a different sport because the
- 32:03Speaker 12: way they can creatively think and able to use their
- 32:07Speaker 12: muscles in a way that the onely near thought process
- 32:11Speaker 12: is for a player.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Yeah, but multiple player sports don't pay the money to
- 32:15Speaker 3: the clubs that will get the soccer case.
- 32:17Speaker 7: To delineate all of yours.
- 32:19Speaker 6: Pete Carroll used to tell us.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Pete Carroll said he would not recruit to USC football
- 32:23Speaker 3: players who didn't play basketball or baseball. He wanted a
- 32:25Speaker 3: guy who was at the file line with one second
- 32:27Speaker 3: left in a tie game. He wanted the guy who
- 32:30Speaker 3: faced a three to two fastball with the bases loaded
- 32:32Speaker 3: in two out, down by a run the last inning.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Mike McDonald has said the same thing. The professionals want
- 32:38Speaker 3: the well rounded mental athlete that as we just talking
- 32:41Speaker 3: about US soccer up to this point, has one of
- 32:43Speaker 3: the player who specializes so he can funnel the money
- 32:46Speaker 3: to the academy and the select systems so that the
- 32:49Speaker 3: administrators and coaches get paid.
- 32:51Speaker 6: That's the bottom line.
- 32:53Speaker 3: They don't diversify because they can't because if they diversify,
- 32:56Speaker 3: then they aren't going to get seen and get their
- 32:57Speaker 3: opportunities to play at the level they're trying to get to.
- 33:00Speaker 6: And that's true in baseball, that's true in some respects.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Basketball football is getting that way with the stupid seven
- 33:04Speaker 3: on seven stuff they do in the offseason.
- 33:06Speaker 8: Yeah, that is not great. Well, mass what do you
- 33:10Speaker 8: think the future of soccer looks like? Do you think
- 33:11Speaker 8: that we're gonna wait another four years for people in
- 33:14Speaker 8: this country to get excited?
- 33:19Speaker 11: Good question.
- 33:20Speaker 12: No, I mean I think you brought on the casual
- 33:23Speaker 12: fan now, and I think, you know, as long as
- 33:27Speaker 12: you can continue to put a product out there, exhibitions
- 33:30Speaker 12: and things like that, MLS has then a real you
- 33:33Speaker 12: know now it actually bothes well and what I'm referencing
- 33:38Speaker 12: Miami and you know, you saw the LA Galaxy back
- 33:40Speaker 12: in the day.
- 33:41Speaker 11: Bring on those international players that were pretty good.
- 33:44Speaker 12: Now fans might say, well, what's this MLS. You know,
- 33:48Speaker 12: they'll look and say, it's not quite the World Cup,
- 33:52Speaker 12: but there's a couple of players there.
- 33:55Speaker 11: I would love to see MLS, you know, other.
- 33:59Speaker 12: Players, other big name players in Central America.
- 34:04Speaker 11: And West you know what I mean, And that way.
- 34:07Speaker 12: Your fans will stay it because right now is you
- 34:09Speaker 12: know inter my everybody knows about it in Miami, you
- 34:11Speaker 12: know what I mean, Like, but the New York you
- 34:13Speaker 12: know that that's the key. Right now that they've tasted
- 34:18Speaker 12: you know, the drink, you know, you gotta, hey, get
- 34:21Speaker 12: them another one real quickly. It's not going to be
- 34:23Speaker 12: as tasteful as the other one, but you've got to
- 34:26Speaker 12: get MLS to continue to you know, promote that league.
- 34:31Speaker 12: The quality of it is is what what is?
- 34:34Speaker 11: What's key?
- 34:35Speaker 3: Argentina has just scored to cut Egypt scored while we
- 34:38Speaker 3: were talking to taking two new lead and then a
- 34:40Speaker 3: seventy ninth minute, Argentina has just scored on a header
- 34:43Speaker 3: to cut the Egypt lead to two to one and
- 34:44Speaker 3: the seventy ninth minute in Atlanta, the round of sixteen
- 34:46Speaker 3: and what would be by far the largest upset in
- 34:49Speaker 3: this tournament. Now that's getting reviewed. It looks like the
- 34:52Speaker 3: Egyptians are waving their hands to the sky looking for
- 34:55Speaker 3: VR off side review. Here we go again with the
- 34:58Speaker 3: he's onside that's going to count.
- 35:00Speaker 6: We could talk all night about this, all day about.
- 35:02Speaker 3: This, and maybe we'll have you back on to do
- 35:04Speaker 3: it again. But I appreciate you, sir, and I'm said,
- 35:06Speaker 3: I won't see you every day until what ten days
- 35:08Speaker 3: from now or twelve days from now, when.
- 35:13Speaker 11: Thanks for having me so appreciate it.
- 35:15Speaker 6: Appreciate you.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Man Ma's Vita Maurra Cascadia Sports That and Fox thirteen
- 35:20Speaker 3: Seattle World Cup television analyst. He will continue to do
- 35:23Speaker 3: that as the World Cup March is on.
- 35:25Speaker 6: This goal is going to count.
- 35:26Speaker 3: Egypt's down two to one to Argentina in the eightieth
- 35:28Speaker 3: minute in Atlanta. They'll have extra time from the hydration break.
- 35:32Speaker 3: In these goal and var reviews, Argentina has never won
- 35:36Speaker 3: in thirteen World Cup matches that they've trailed by multiple goals,
- 35:39Speaker 3: and they were down two nothing in the seventy So.
- 35:41Speaker 7: You're saying that's a big deal.
- 35:42Speaker 3: It's a huge deal, and Egypt beating Argentina, the defending
- 35:46Speaker 3: champions in the World Cup, would be massive. France is
- 35:49Speaker 3: liking the current result of this, but man is Argentina
- 35:51Speaker 3: pressing like pac Man right now? I'm next we'll talk
- 35:55Speaker 3: more about my impressions of last night talking to coach
- 35:58Speaker 3: Mauricio Postatino and the player there's is Poncentino coming back.
- 36:02Speaker 3: He was asked that question and he answered it. Eleven o'clock.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Gary Hill Junior from Miami to talk about the Mariners
- 36:07Speaker 3: coming off a five and one home stands facing the
- 36:09Speaker 3: Marlins Ace today in South Florida on ninety three point
- 36:12Speaker 3: three kJ r F.
- 36:13Speaker 6: M All right, we're back, so is Argentina. Greg Bell,
- 36:50Speaker 6: Chris and.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Jessmon McIntyre with you on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 36:54Speaker 3: As we are every day.
- 36:55Speaker 14: Check.
- 36:57Speaker 3: I almost say Christopher Kidd because I do miss him.
- 37:00Speaker 7: I miss him too.
- 37:01Speaker 3: This kid is no longer with iHeart and those of
- 37:03Speaker 3: you that have asked, and that's where that stands. And
- 37:05Speaker 3: Jess and I are reuniting like it's an Army Navy week.
- 37:08Speaker 7: Well why not?
- 37:09Speaker 3: We will be there in December the second Saturday of December,
- 37:12Speaker 3: second Thursday of December, will fly to New York City,
- 37:15Speaker 3: broadcasting live on Friday from.
- 37:17Speaker 7: Time Times Square. Yes, just going home.
- 37:21Speaker 8: Yes, well my family will be able to visit, so
- 37:24Speaker 8: that's going to be very exciting. But I have always
- 37:26Speaker 8: loved before I even worked here, I did one of
- 37:29Speaker 8: those with you.
- 37:31Speaker 7: It's amazing, and.
- 37:32Speaker 3: You the how much you appreciated the military camaraderie and
- 37:36Speaker 3: what it.
- 37:37Speaker 7: Means it is unlike anything.
- 37:39Speaker 3: It really struck me and I have always thought, I've
- 37:41Speaker 3: always appreciated you for that because a lot of civilian,
- 37:44Speaker 3: let's face it, a lot of civilians don't have anything
- 37:46Speaker 3: to do with the military, and it's so different than the
- 37:48Speaker 3: rest of society in this country where it's an all
- 37:50Speaker 3: volunteer fours that some people don't feel that appreciation, but
- 37:55Speaker 3: you do. And oh, I love going there.
- 37:57Speaker 8: I was so excited because I got to be there,
- 38:00Speaker 8: you know, because you told me to get there early
- 38:03Speaker 8: to see everything.
- 38:05Speaker 7: And I went and it was magnificent mid side tip.
- 38:09Speaker 6: I've only been to about twenty five of those.
- 38:11Speaker 8: Yeah, so it was a really good tip. And then
- 38:15Speaker 8: this year, I mean it is in New Jersey technically,
- 38:18Speaker 8: but we will be doing our show from Times Square
- 38:20Speaker 8: in New York.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Yes, the game will be from the Swampson the Meadowlands
- 38:24Speaker 3: where the World Cup final will be. Argentina thought it
- 38:26Speaker 3: was going to be there. Then they fell behind two
- 38:28Speaker 3: nil to Egypt in Atlanta. In the seventy ninth minute,
- 38:31Speaker 3: they were down to nil and inevitably Messy. Of course,
- 38:35Speaker 3: Messi ties the game in the eighty fourth minute. They
- 38:38Speaker 3: go from zero two down in Atlanta to Egypt, Argentina
- 38:41Speaker 3: did to level to two in the eighty fourth now
- 38:44Speaker 3: ninetieth minute, they'll be playing added time, and if they
- 38:46Speaker 3: don't score in second half added time, they will be
- 38:48Speaker 3: going the extra time in Atlanta in the round of sixteen.
- 38:51Speaker 6: Yeah, good, and what is becoming wild match in Atlanta.
- 38:54Speaker 7: Yeah, let's educate our audience on what happens.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Okay, So if the game remains tied up after ninety
- 39:00Speaker 3: minutes plus stop each time, you go to thirty minutes
- 39:02Speaker 3: of extra time, fifteen minutes in each period. This is
- 39:05Speaker 3: a knockout stage. And don't do this for the group stage.
- 39:07Speaker 3: You just take the draw in one point and move on.
- 39:10Speaker 3: But in a knockout stage two to fifteen minute halves
- 39:12Speaker 3: with a halftime between. It's not golden goal. It's not
- 39:15Speaker 3: overtime where sudden death with next goal wins. It's play
- 39:18Speaker 3: thirty minutes and whoever has the most goals after those
- 39:20Speaker 3: thirty minutes wins. If no one scores, they remain tied,
- 39:24Speaker 3: like each team scores once, which happened sometimes in the
- 39:26Speaker 3: thirty minute extra time. If the game score remains tight
- 39:29Speaker 3: after those thirty minutes of extra time and one hundred
- 39:31Speaker 3: and twenty minutes total of official play. They go to
- 39:33Speaker 3: penalty kicks for the shootout from the spot twelve yards
- 39:36Speaker 3: from the goal keeper versus shooter five times, best of five.
- 39:40Speaker 3: If it's remains tired. After that, they go to sudden
- 39:43Speaker 3: death rounds of one team getting each chance, like innings
- 39:46Speaker 3: in baseball six seven, eight, keepers sometimes having to shoot
- 39:49Speaker 3: when they're ten. Let's see if Argentina gets to that
- 39:53Speaker 3: with Egypt. Last night, the United States could only wish
- 39:56Speaker 3: for extra time. They were blown off the pitch here
- 39:59Speaker 3: in Seattle to and their World Cup, which has been
- 40:01Speaker 3: a rousing success. It was the sixth and final World
- 40:03Speaker 3: Cup matchup the six here in Seattle. Rico Pochettino, the
- 40:06Speaker 3: native Argentinian, was asked after the matches he want to
- 40:09Speaker 3: come back?
- 40:09Speaker 6: His contract ends after this with this World Cup.
- 40:12Speaker 3: There's been talk that he has a contract waiting for
- 40:14Speaker 3: him from the US national program. Does he want to
- 40:17Speaker 3: come back and run this back and try to qualify
- 40:19Speaker 3: for the twenty thirty World Cup of the United States
- 40:21Speaker 3: and Morocco.
- 40:21Speaker 6: Here's what Pochettino said to that.
- 40:23Speaker 15: I think now because.
- 40:24Speaker 16: We were talking with the federation, he's about to be
- 40:28Speaker 16: to invest a little bit to sink the conversation and
- 40:32Speaker 16: then see what.
- 40:37Speaker 14: In the federation on finas.
- 40:39Speaker 16: But I also probably I think it will be in
- 40:41Speaker 16: a very good relationship.
- 40:43Speaker 11: But now it's a moment to talk about that.
- 40:45Speaker 14: I see, there's a moment to seek, you know, un
- 40:53Speaker 14: for sure in the next weeks, you can started to talk.
- 40:57Speaker 14: If the federation one.
- 40:59Speaker 8: One to talk.
- 41:01Speaker 6: And that's the key point.
- 41:02Speaker 3: If the federation wants to talk, Yeah, they want to talk.
- 41:05Speaker 3: He was successful in changing the culture, changing the attitude
- 41:09Speaker 3: of the team on the pitch. He's got a long
- 41:11Speaker 3: way to go for the program, the actual program and
- 41:14Speaker 3: the development side. We'll see what Poacher Tina does within
- 41:18Speaker 3: the coming weeks. I bet he has another offer to stay.
- 41:20Speaker 3: He's never This is the first time he's coached a
- 41:22Speaker 3: club team in Atlanta. Argentina has scored an added time
- 41:27Speaker 3: of the second half. In the ninety third minute, third
- 41:30Speaker 3: minute of seven extra in Atlanta, the Egyptians just looked
- 41:34Speaker 3: like the pyramids.
- 41:35Speaker 6: Collapsed, and it did.
- 41:36Speaker 3: They're down three to two after being up two nil
- 41:39Speaker 3: on the World champion. The celebration, I think Andrews just
- 41:44Speaker 3: ran through the glass windows into Elliott Bay and is
- 41:47Speaker 3: now running across the water.
- 41:48Speaker 7: We're good. Hopefully a humpback picks them up.
- 41:50Speaker 3: He's wearing his messy Argentinian light blue and white striped jersey.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Now the Argentinian keeper, who's been amazing today, is asking
- 41:59Speaker 3: for a VAAR review of this Argentina three Egypt two
- 42:02Speaker 3: as it now stands. In the ninety third minute of
- 42:04Speaker 3: ninety seven scheduled to be played most Sala is asking
- 42:08Speaker 3: for a review a lifeline of var But the Argentinians
- 42:12Speaker 3: have come back from the dead, as they say in
- 42:14Speaker 3: the sport, to take a three to two lead after
- 42:16Speaker 3: being down in the eightieth minute two nil in Atlanta.
- 42:19Speaker 3: Up next, we'll go further south in Atlanta to Miami.
- 42:21Speaker 3: That's where the Mariners have flown. They have a three
- 42:23Speaker 3: game series that starts today with Brian Wu on the
- 42:26Speaker 3: mount against the Marlins. Ace and Gary Hill, junior Mariners
- 42:29Speaker 3: broadcaster is going to describe it all on the radio today.
- 42:31Speaker 3: He's going to talk to us about the radio now
- 42:34Speaker 3: next on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Oh from the Star Rentals Sports Death Jordan ninety three
- 42:43Speaker 1: point three KJRFM Sports Headlines, Good morning Headlines.
- 42:48Speaker 3: I have brought you by frostbrewed cors Light. Choose chill.
- 42:50Speaker 3: There is nothing chill in Atlanta right now. In the
- 42:52Speaker 3: World Cup, it looks like a WWE match has broken out.
- 42:56Speaker 3: Argentina has taken gone from zero two down to Egypt
- 42:59Speaker 3: in the eightieth minute to up three to two in
- 43:00Speaker 3: the ninety third. There were supposed to be seven extra minutes.
- 43:03Speaker 3: They're not playing there eleventh and added time because of
- 43:07Speaker 3: all the cards. The referee has more cards than a
- 43:09Speaker 3: blackjack dealer in Vegas. He red carded an assistant coach
- 43:13Speaker 3: for Egypt. He yellow carded the head coach. He yellow
- 43:16Speaker 3: card about nine Egyptian players. Anyone in red has a
- 43:19Speaker 3: card right now. And it just ended Argentina three Egypt
- 43:22Speaker 3: two to advance to the quarterfinals. Messi has bent over
- 43:26Speaker 3: in tears, pumping both fists. The guy who scored the
- 43:30Speaker 3: winning goal for Argentina's on the ground and his knees
- 43:34Speaker 3: scenes as the kids say scenes in Atlanta. Argentina advances
- 43:39Speaker 3: will play the winner of Switzerland Columbia. That's the second
- 43:42Speaker 3: game of the day up in Vancouver. The last game
- 43:45Speaker 3: in Vancouver. It starts at one o'clock our time. The
- 43:48Speaker 3: last game in Seattle last night was a dud chuck
- 43:51Speaker 3: on the promo just leading into this was pretty apt.
- 43:55Speaker 3: They were out everything. The United States was losing four
- 43:57Speaker 3: to one to Belgium. They're out of the tournament. All
- 44:01Speaker 3: three host nations go out in three consecutive days, and
- 44:05Speaker 3: now the World Cup trudges on to the round of eight.
- 44:07Speaker 3: We'll have the broadcast of a round of eight match
- 44:09Speaker 3: on Thursday here on eleven thirty Pregame show, and then
- 44:13Speaker 3: Friday at twelve thirty pregame show will be the pregame
- 44:16Speaker 3: of the pregame leading into both of those days live
- 44:18Speaker 3: on ninety three point three KJRFM. Coach Mike McDonald, general
- 44:21Speaker 3: manager John Schneider, Leonard Williams, A. J. Barner, Brady Russell,
- 44:25Speaker 3: some other Seahawks were at the World Cup match last night.
- 44:27Speaker 3: It's sold out and rock and loominfield. Mc did not
- 44:30Speaker 3: actually took the microphone yield. We do not care to
- 44:33Speaker 3: love him for that. I wonder if he says that
- 44:35Speaker 3: to his wife when his baby needs diaper change or something.
- 44:37Speaker 7: I don't think he does. Yeah, he's smarter, No, he doesn't.
- 44:40Speaker 3: He is smarter than that. By the way, Anderson Hurst
- 44:45Speaker 3: wearing his he's married to an Argentinian. Yes, just showed
- 44:48Speaker 3: he's wearing his messy jersey going nuts right outside my
- 44:51Speaker 3: office door. He showed me a picture of his wife
- 44:53Speaker 3: with those baby six months old. Now, Yeah, crying because
- 44:57Speaker 3: his wife screams so loudly at Messi's tying goal, and
- 45:01Speaker 3: she sent a picture him in his mom's arms, tears
- 45:04Speaker 3: with a sad face, tears thing he won't remember being
- 45:09Speaker 3: startled by mom. Yeah, the Mariners are in Miami. Gary
- 45:14Speaker 3: Hill Junior just took the longest flight you can take
- 45:17Speaker 3: in the United continental United States between two major cities.
- 45:21Speaker 3: I guess from Juno, Alaska, but that's not even continental
- 45:24Speaker 3: in the United States. Gary Hill Junior is with the
- 45:27Speaker 3: team in Miami. The Mariners is coming off a five
- 45:28Speaker 3: and one road trip. He joined us live on the
- 45:30Speaker 3: Beacon Plumbing hotline from South Florida. Hello sir, thanks for
- 45:33Speaker 3: joining us again.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Hello, Yes, that was a long fly. Yeah, I'm just
- 45:38Speaker 4: happy that they put both the Florida teams together on
- 45:41Speaker 4: one trip. Yes, we don't have to do it fly
- 45:43Speaker 4: so I guess. So that's one thing. That's something.
- 45:46Speaker 6: What's the guy?
- 45:46Speaker 3: So this ends the first Well, the unofficial first hab it.
- 45:48Speaker 3: It goes right into the All Star break. What do
- 45:50Speaker 3: you get to do for your All Star break? There,
- 45:52Speaker 3: I'm going to get you a chance to look ahead.
- 45:55Speaker 4: Oh I'm looking forward to it. I'm just going to
- 45:56Speaker 4: hang out at home. I was watching the World Cup
- 46:02Speaker 4: last night. Seattle looked amazing as it was just pouring
- 46:06Speaker 4: in Florida. Was like, oh man, that looks really fun.
- 46:10Speaker 3: I want to be there.
- 46:10Speaker 4: So I'm going to enjoy some Seattle summer. That's what
- 46:13Speaker 4: That's what my planet.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Is good for you. Yeah, I always felt bad when
- 46:16Speaker 3: I was a baseball beat writer traveling beat writer. I
- 46:18Speaker 3: begged the Sacramento be not to have me cover the
- 46:20Speaker 3: All Star Game because I just went in three days off.
- 46:24Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, we don't get We don't get that, so
- 46:29Speaker 4: we very much enjoy it whenever it comes around.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you are you are the Luke greg of the
- 46:34Speaker 3: Seattle Mariners broadcast team.
- 46:36Speaker 6: You doing everything?
- 46:38Speaker 3: What have you done the last six days when they
- 46:40Speaker 3: went five and one way? How did here we go?
- 46:43Speaker 3: How many times are going to ask you? This is
- 46:44Speaker 3: this the turn? Is this where they're turning the corner?
- 46:49Speaker 6: I hope?
- 46:49Speaker 4: So that was a really good home stand uh, that's
- 46:53Speaker 4: it felt like that's exactly what they needed. And really
- 46:56Speaker 4: on the backs of the pitching. Mostly their pitching was
- 46:58Speaker 4: phenomenal and obviously in that six games, it's been an
- 47:02Speaker 4: incredible start to the month of July after what was
- 47:05Speaker 4: a really tough month in June. Hitting was better, obviously,
- 47:08Speaker 4: and I think they hit some home runs, and to me,
- 47:10Speaker 4: that's been the big key if you ask me what
- 47:12Speaker 4: the issue was in June, they just didn't slug enough,
- 47:14Speaker 4: they didn't home enough. And when the Mariners are rolling,
- 47:18Speaker 4: it's basically the same formula. They're getting great starting pitching,
- 47:22Speaker 4: they're getting good bullpen to close out games, and they're
- 47:25Speaker 4: hitting home runs and that's when they're at their best.
- 47:27Speaker 4: And we saw a lot of that on this most
- 47:29Speaker 4: recent homestand now this trip is going to be, I
- 47:33Speaker 4: think much trickier than people realize. The Marlins have been
- 47:37Speaker 4: the best team in baseball since the beginning of June.
- 47:39Speaker 4: They've been red hot, their offense has been sizzling, and
- 47:42Speaker 4: their pitching has been great. They have the second best
- 47:44Speaker 4: ERA in that time since the beginning of June, and
- 47:47Speaker 4: Tampa Bay is the very best team in the American League.
- 47:51Speaker 4: A going to record, So it's a tough way and
- 47:54Speaker 4: a sneaky, tough way to go into the break. I
- 47:57Speaker 4: think if you can go five hundred on this trip,
- 48:01Speaker 4: given what they just did at home, I think that's
- 48:03Speaker 4: a solid way to go into the All Star Break
- 48:06Speaker 4: and they can feel pretty good about things.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I think, Yeah, the m's getting Max Myra to nineties
- 48:09Speaker 3: nine to one with a two five three er, which
- 48:12Speaker 3: for a starting pitcher these days is a subterranean the
- 48:16Speaker 3: How worrisome should it be for Mariners fans? Like you said,
- 48:20Speaker 3: if they hit home runs, they win, but if they don't,
- 48:22Speaker 3: it doesn't matter how good they're pitching is.
- 48:24Speaker 6: You can't win if you don't score.
- 48:26Speaker 3: How worrisome is that alone for this team still?
- 48:31Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think it's that worrisome because I
- 48:34Speaker 4: kind of think it's that's how you win in Major
- 48:37Speaker 4: League Baseball. I just think it's really hard these days
- 48:40Speaker 4: that we have seen with the Mariners, and it's just
- 48:42Speaker 4: not just the Mariners, it's with baseball in general. Pitching
- 48:46Speaker 4: is just so good. It's hard to string together hits consistently.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Now you can do it in games. There's games where
- 48:52Speaker 4: you have double digit hits and you don't hit a
- 48:54Speaker 4: home run and you score. But I'm just talking about
- 48:57Speaker 4: on a consistent day to day basis. I just think
- 49:00Speaker 4: in the modern game, it's tough to score consistently if
- 49:04Speaker 4: you're not slugging and not hitting home runs. I actually
- 49:07Speaker 4: think that's how you build a team, not only to
- 49:11Speaker 4: win in the regular season, but it's an absolute must
- 49:14Speaker 4: in the postseason. If you're going to go anywhere, you've
- 49:17Speaker 4: got to hit home runs.
- 49:18Speaker 3: So it would be.
- 49:21Speaker 4: Great if they could roll out double digit hits every
- 49:24Speaker 4: day and score in a bunch of ways. That's really good.
- 49:26Speaker 4: There's just that's really hard to do, and there's not
- 49:29Speaker 4: many teams that do that well. So I mean, it
- 49:31Speaker 4: would be great to score in different ways, but I
- 49:34Speaker 4: think the reality is it's the best way to score
- 49:37Speaker 4: consistently hit home runs, especially when you're hitting home runs
- 49:40Speaker 4: with two three guys aboard. It's just not something they
- 49:44Speaker 4: saw very much in June, and we know the reasons
- 49:46Speaker 4: why cow wasn't hitting home runs, and Julio, after having
- 49:50Speaker 4: a great month in May with extra base hits, didn't
- 49:53Speaker 4: hit a ton in June and just kind of look
- 49:54Speaker 4: up and down the lineup. They just weren't getting them
- 49:57Speaker 4: up and down, especially from the guys you re need
- 50:00Speaker 4: it from. So hopefully that changes in June.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Yeah, the old earl weaver, the guy, Yeah, the ear weaver.
- 50:06Speaker 3: The best thing in life is a three run homer.
- 50:10Speaker 3: You remember that back in the seventies.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:12Speaker 6: Absolutely, But.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Let's talk about why it's this existential day here on
- 50:19Speaker 3: the show. Gary, So you've walked right into this. Why
- 50:21Speaker 3: is it so hard to string hits? Is it mase
- 50:24Speaker 3: pitchers are just bigger, stronger, throw the ball faster with
- 50:26Speaker 3: an array of pitches. Is it the over reliance and
- 50:29Speaker 3: the kids are being brought up on veloso exit v
- 50:33Speaker 3: lo and launch angles or as you I mean.
- 50:35Speaker 6: You said, this is where the game is.
- 50:37Speaker 3: But do you think it's because of the pitching and
- 50:39Speaker 3: the physicality and just the physical skills of pitchers.
- 50:42Speaker 4: Yes, I think it's the pure stuff that guys are
- 50:46Speaker 4: seeing every single day. In fact, I was just looking
- 50:49Speaker 4: at the average fastball the other day, and I think
- 50:52Speaker 4: it was twenty two thousand and eight. I think I
- 50:56Speaker 4: was looking at may average fastball was like ninety one
- 50:59Speaker 4: or something like that. It doesn't feel like that long ago.
- 51:01Speaker 4: And now the average fastball has ticked. The average fastball
- 51:05Speaker 4: has ticked over ninety four miles per hour. That's for starters,
- 51:08Speaker 4: So that's the average. So we see it all the
- 51:12Speaker 4: time where there's you look at any bullpen, there's a
- 51:15Speaker 4: couple guys in every bullpen in baseball that can reach
- 51:17Speaker 4: a hundred. That's when you see a hundred. It's not
- 51:20Speaker 4: it used to be like whoa right, It's like, yeah,
- 51:22Speaker 4: a guy reaches one hundred. It's the pure stuff is
- 51:25Speaker 4: off the charts. Guys go into the labs. And for
- 51:27Speaker 4: Marrini fans, hey, the Mariners benefit from this because you
- 51:31Speaker 4: look at the starting rotation, you look at the bullpen.
- 51:34Speaker 4: It's nasty, man, it's the stuff is just wicked. Day
- 51:38Speaker 4: in and day just asked the Blue Jays because they
- 51:40Speaker 4: saw it in three games and they couldn't do anything
- 51:43Speaker 4: against the Mariners two runs, twenty four straight, scoreless. Now
- 51:47Speaker 4: they're in a bad spot, but still they saw a
- 51:50Speaker 4: lot of good stuff consistently. And that's what I think
- 51:53Speaker 4: it is. And it's not just the v love, but
- 51:55Speaker 4: that's part of it. But it's pitchers have a way
- 52:00Speaker 4: of find of maximizing what they do in terms of
- 52:04Speaker 4: spin and everything else. At such a fast rate. I
- 52:06Speaker 4: remember talking to Mark Low about this. He used to
- 52:08Speaker 4: be a Mariner's reliever, and it used to be back
- 52:12Speaker 4: in the day, like he would spend all off season
- 52:15Speaker 4: working on a slider, right, and he gets the spring training.
- 52:17Speaker 4: He told me a story once he worked on this
- 52:19Speaker 4: pitch all winter long. He gets the spring training. He
- 52:22Speaker 4: threw it like three times and he says whack, whack, whack,
- 52:25Speaker 4: and it's like, well, that's not gonna work. But that's
- 52:27Speaker 4: the only way he knew, right. But now they can
- 52:29Speaker 4: go on the lab and they can see the spin,
- 52:32Speaker 4: they see it how good it is right away, and
- 52:34Speaker 4: they can adjust from there. It's a beautiful time to
- 52:36Speaker 4: be a pitcher. It's just really hard to hit at
- 52:39Speaker 4: this level.
- 52:40Speaker 6: And you can see it from your press box.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Fantash point in most stadiums, right, the actual spin and
- 52:44Speaker 3: the actual movement, lateral movement, especially on the pitches.
- 52:48Speaker 4: And yeah, absolutely absolutely.
- 52:51Speaker 3: If I remember in Miami, though, I think you're at
- 52:52Speaker 3: the top of the stadium, might be able harder to
- 52:54Speaker 3: see from that mistakes.
- 52:55Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a little high.
- 52:56Speaker 4: It's not as high as uh, it's not high as others,
- 52:58Speaker 4: not as high as Washington and pitch places we've been recently,
- 53:01Speaker 4: so it won't feel too bad. But yeah, it's it's
- 53:04Speaker 4: fairly high.
- 53:05Speaker 3: Gariel junior, marriage broadcaster, joining us from South Florida where
- 53:08Speaker 3: the Mariners are playing the Marlins at Miami starting today
- 53:10Speaker 3: in a three game series.
- 53:11Speaker 8: Yeah, Gary, Jessamin McIntyre here, Hi, my friend. I always
- 53:16Speaker 8: appreciate you joining us. I was just going to ask, like,
- 53:20Speaker 8: if we go broader spectrum of the team as it
- 53:23Speaker 8: is you are with this, I would like you to
- 53:26Speaker 8: let us inside the clubhouse a little. We had obviously
- 53:29Speaker 8: with Gino we had great, you know, good vibes only
- 53:33Speaker 8: in everything. How is the clubhouse these days?
- 53:37Speaker 4: The clubhouse is good. It's been I think it's been
- 53:41Speaker 4: frustrating for everyone in this first half, whether you're in
- 53:45Speaker 4: the clubhouse or fans or us or everyone, because the
- 53:49Speaker 4: expectation level was so high coming to the season, and
- 53:52Speaker 4: it's really been a roller coaster ride in the first half,
- 53:55Speaker 4: and I think everyone feels like they have not played
- 53:58Speaker 4: their best baseball yet of the season. Yet you know,
- 54:01Speaker 4: they find themselves in first place. Funny enough, despite everything
- 54:03Speaker 4: that's happened in the first half of the season. So
- 54:06Speaker 4: I think the clubouse is good. I think they're really
- 54:09Speaker 4: confident as a group because I still feel like all
- 54:12Speaker 4: the goals they had to begin this season, whether it's
- 54:15Speaker 4: division titles and winning the American League, going to the
- 54:18Speaker 4: World Series, all the things that were talked about before
- 54:20Speaker 4: the season, I think they all feel like that is
- 54:23Speaker 4: still right there for them. I think they're just frustrated,
- 54:27Speaker 4: you know, that they haven't put together a big run yet,
- 54:30Speaker 4: and part of that I think has been health. It's
- 54:32Speaker 4: been you know, it's like frustrating the other day when
- 54:35Speaker 4: they finally get their two lefties back in the lineup,
- 54:37Speaker 4: a Canzone and Raley, and it's like, oh, right, outside
- 54:39Speaker 4: of Donovan, their whole lineup was intact, and then they
- 54:41Speaker 4: lose two center fielders by the fifth inning. And it's
- 54:44Speaker 4: been that kind of year where, especially offensively, it just
- 54:47Speaker 4: seems like we have not seen the group together that
- 54:51Speaker 4: we expected to and hopefully that day's getting closer. Hopefully
- 54:55Speaker 4: we see wholly own the strip at some point, and
- 54:58Speaker 4: it sounds like Donovan's getting closer well, So it would
- 55:01Speaker 4: be really fun to see the entire lineup as we
- 55:05Speaker 4: expect it at some point for a long stretch and
- 55:07Speaker 4: hopefully that stretch is coming.
- 55:09Speaker 7: So who would you consider the leader right now?
- 55:14Speaker 4: That's a good question. I think that's hard from the
- 55:17Speaker 4: outside to judge because I get the sensors a few
- 55:21Speaker 4: of them in there, like most baseball teams, and I
- 55:23Speaker 4: think leadership comes in different ways because I think there
- 55:27Speaker 4: are some guys that are more vocal and there's some
- 55:30Speaker 4: guys that definitely do it by example, which I think
- 55:33Speaker 4: is fine. I think it's great to have a variety.
- 55:36Speaker 4: I also think it's great to have a variety of personalities,
- 55:39Speaker 4: and which I think they do. I mean, they have
- 55:41Speaker 4: a lot of good people in the clubhouse, which I
- 55:43Speaker 4: think is really helpful when you're trying to get everyone
- 55:47Speaker 4: moving in the same direction. So I think that's a
- 55:48Speaker 4: great starting point. So I think it's a number of
- 55:51Speaker 4: different guys in a number of different ways. That's how
- 55:54Speaker 4: I think about it.
- 55:55Speaker 3: Gary, I was going to ask you about Hulia Rodriguez
- 55:57Speaker 3: seven day concussion list of your concussion Thursday night against
- 56:00Speaker 3: the Angels, getting hit with the thrown ball at.
- 56:02Speaker 6: Second base lighting into second base.
- 56:05Speaker 3: It would seem a seventh game he come back maybe
- 56:07Speaker 3: for the Tampa Bay Series three game series that goes
- 56:09Speaker 3: into the All Star break, why not just take them,
- 56:12Speaker 3: let him have the entire road trip off and be
- 56:15Speaker 3: back with almost two full weeks off.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the question is how how he'll feel.
- 56:22Speaker 4: And I think that's the first one. I didn't fly
- 56:25Speaker 4: with the team originally, so he was coming in the
- 56:28Speaker 4: next day to just see how he felt. So I
- 56:30Speaker 4: think it's going to be completely dictated on that. If
- 56:32Speaker 4: he's feeling great, hey let him play in that three
- 56:35Speaker 4: game series, because, as we've talked about before, you just
- 56:39Speaker 4: the margins are always so tight when you get into September,
- 56:43Speaker 4: whether you're talking about trying to get yourself into the
- 56:46Speaker 4: postseason or winning a division or trying to see your
- 56:48Speaker 4: current home field best record.
- 56:51Speaker 3: In the American League.
- 56:51Speaker 4: You just you don't know what's going to be on
- 56:53Speaker 4: the line. And it's a three game series against Tampa Bay,
- 56:57Speaker 4: a team that you figure you're going to be in
- 56:59Speaker 4: contention with or something. Maybe it's home field, we don't know,
- 57:02Speaker 4: but maybe those three games are gonna be pretty meaningful
- 57:06Speaker 4: down the stretch. So if he's ready to go, I
- 57:09Speaker 4: would play him. But it's totally dependent on how he feels.
- 57:13Speaker 4: And as we all know, like head injuries and getting
- 57:17Speaker 4: hit in the head that can be tricky. So I
- 57:19Speaker 4: know they're going to be very cautious because if he's
- 57:21Speaker 4: not feeling one hundred percent, I'm with you, just hey, wait,
- 57:25Speaker 4: wait through the All Star break and bring him back
- 57:27Speaker 4: after the All Star break at home. So I know
- 57:29Speaker 4: they'll be cautious and careful. So it's completely going to.
- 57:33Speaker 3: Depend on how he feels.
- 57:34Speaker 6: So he's with the team now in Miami said he
- 57:36Speaker 6: came secondarily.
- 57:36Speaker 4: I'm not sure. I know he didn't fly with the team,
- 57:39Speaker 4: and I just got here today, so I haven't seen
- 57:40Speaker 4: him yet. I'm not sure yet if he if he
- 57:45Speaker 4: has arrived here or not, or if he's going to
- 57:47Speaker 4: meet us in Tampa Bay. I'm not sure. I think
- 57:49Speaker 4: he was going to depend on how he felt yesterday.
- 57:51Speaker 4: So I think we'll all learn as this series plays out,
- 57:55Speaker 4: whether we see him or not.
- 57:56Speaker 3: When we're watching the game starting at three point forty today,
- 57:59Speaker 3: how will we know what you look for seeing him
- 58:01Speaker 3: pitch all the time that Brian wu is getting off
- 58:03Speaker 3: of his road start woes.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Yeah, so that's a good question, and I don't have
- 58:11Speaker 4: the answer to that, because what's weird about what has
- 58:14Speaker 4: happened on the road for him, there has been like
- 58:18Speaker 4: a lot of them where hey, he's like three innings
- 58:21Speaker 4: and he looks exactly the same. At home, he's putting
- 58:24Speaker 4: up zeros, they're not getting hits, he's getting strikeouts, and
- 58:27Speaker 4: then it just feels like, all of a sudden, the
- 58:31Speaker 4: wheels fall off and he has a really tough inning
- 58:34Speaker 4: that he can't get through. And that's the part that
- 58:36Speaker 4: it feels like comes out of nowhere. It feels like
- 58:38Speaker 4: an ambush situation where all of a sudden, the fourth
- 58:41Speaker 4: inning on the road, he gives up a four spot
- 58:43Speaker 4: or something like that. To me, it's been those big
- 58:46Speaker 4: innings where he just can't slow down. They're run he
- 58:52Speaker 4: can't stop the damage. So it's a good question that
- 58:56Speaker 4: I don't have the answer to, and I guess I
- 58:58Speaker 4: guess the true answer is walking up field, pitching six innings,
- 59:02Speaker 4: giving up two runs or something like that would be
- 59:04Speaker 4: the answer, because it's really weird how it's played out,
- 59:07Speaker 4: Like all the blow ups have been on the road
- 59:10Speaker 4: and at home. He's been the same guy that we
- 59:12Speaker 4: all expected, right, the top five cy young guy from
- 59:15Speaker 4: a year ago, completely dominant that sort of thing. So
- 59:19Speaker 4: It's a very strange phenomenon, and I'm curious to see
- 59:22Speaker 4: what it looks like against a Marlins team that's been
- 59:24Speaker 4: red hot, and they are like the Blue Jays last year,
- 59:28Speaker 4: a team that they don't hit for a ton of power,
- 59:31Speaker 4: but they're super pesky. They put the ball and play
- 59:33Speaker 4: a lot. They get a lot of base hits, they
- 59:35Speaker 4: get a lot of the runs that way, and so
- 59:38Speaker 4: innings can get away from you. You know, they can.
- 59:42Speaker 4: They can stack up five six hits in an inning.
- 59:44Speaker 4: So I'm curious to see how this one plays out today,
- 59:48Speaker 4: and in a game where they're probably not going to
- 59:50Speaker 4: have a lot of margin for error. As you mentioned
- 59:52Speaker 4: Meyer on the other side, he's an All Star for
- 59:54Speaker 4: the Marlins.
- 59:54Speaker 6: He's been really.
- 59:55Speaker 4: Good, especially lately. So it's just not a game where
- 59:59Speaker 4: they I can afford to give up four or five
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: runs in an any because that's gonna be tough to
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: get if that happens.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: Gary Hill Junior, we know what you have a job
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: to do. We appreciate you taking the time from Miami.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: He'll be on the call this afternoon three forty start
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: of the Mariners begin a road trip to Miami and
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Tampa Bay. Take care, sir, and we won't bother you
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: next week during your All Star break. I promise.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: Well, thanks for that. Hopefully they have a good trip
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: going into the break and we can all enjoy it.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Let's see what happened, all right, Gary Joey, Florida, Thank you, sir.
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: Gary Hill, Junior Mariners broadcaster. He's in for the Mariners
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: Marlins in Miami three games starting today. The Marlins forty
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: ninety two, four games back of the roll in Atlanta,
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: braves in the nationally Geese, but they currently hold a
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: wild card spot. They've won seven or the last ten.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: Like Gary said, they're red hot and they have their
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: a schooling tonight. So tough task for Brian would to
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: get off his road trip problems. I'm next your chance
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: to be a part of the show four nine, four
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: or five to one on the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: A lot of good.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: Comments coming in about you, soccer pay for play system
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: in sports in this country in general, and about soccer
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: and whether you're in or out. We've checked out for
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: the next four years, and why you have if you have.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: I leave it with the three words I had in
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: my head as I left Lumenfield last night.
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: Keep the Grass, oh man, I was just really worried
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: about the other words.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Keep the grass, Seahawk's owner, current and future owners. Keep
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: the Grass. Ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: Welcome back, Greg.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Mal Jessin mcintarry with Who's we are every Weekday, Tenday
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: and anoon a ninety three point three KJRM And it.
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: Is a pleasure.
- 1:02:23Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: Appreciate that you know what the music means. It's time
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: for you to be a part of the show. I
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: just want you all to know if you don't do talkbacks,
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: Jessmine gets very disappointed.
- 1:02:32Speaker 7: I miss your voices.
- 1:02:34Speaker 6: Her voice to me when.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: She says we don't want me to talkback today is
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: very downcast.
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: I'm very sad. I want to hear your voices.
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: How do you do talkbacks?
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: You go the iHeartRadio app, but you can download for
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: free if you haven't done that, and you go to
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: nine through three KJR and at the bottom of the
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: screen is a red microphone button.
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: You press that button.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: You need a thirty second voicemail or less than thirty
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: seconds or fewer than thirty seconds, as it should be.
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: I do like the cut screams that are perfect.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: Part of that, or in lieu of that, we had
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: the text line four nine four five, one of the
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: Koma diage text line where there are a lot of
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: stuff about soccer on there.
- 1:03:08Speaker 7: Yes, we had a great conversation with Maz.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: It was and he's in the grassroots of soccer where
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: we're trying to get the US soccer program to change
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: its ways instead of the pay for play. He Ap
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: coaches middle school at Orchest High School or excuse me,
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Orcst Middle School off of Reneer Avenue, and those are
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: the usually the underserved population for soccer, those players that they.
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: Just after middle school, high school set.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: There's no entry point for me to try to take
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: soccer to further higher level, except there is. It's just
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: the entry points are some of that love this conversation
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: four two five says glad you guys continue to bring
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: it up. Pay to play is hard for kids and
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: parents and hinders the growth of the sport. Dave from
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: the two six this, he's a good question. I've heard
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: about this play for play thing being vilified for a
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: long time. My kids played club soccer. I know that system.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: What are the other countries doing differently from pay to play?
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: Are you referring to tax dollars to this, No, I'm
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: not talking about that money out of your own wallet
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: or a communist model. Nothing talking about communists. Belgium's not communists,
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Germany's not communists anymore.
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know what I'm talking about.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: I'm talking about traditionally, like Brazil, when Brazil was ruling
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: world soccer, and I know they've down and the talent
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: has dried up and there's not the same, there would
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: be scouts for the national team. They would hire scouts
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: to go in the favelas, into the slums of Rio
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: and of Brazilia and the cities, and fine kids who
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: just watch them play soccer in the street, maybe in
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: their bare feet, and would watch them they play with
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: rocks and they'd say yes, and they'd say, whoa, this
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: kid's got foot skills, this guy's got talent, he's got speed, size,
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: whatever it is, and pay you. You have a chance
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: to come and make good. You want to go play
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: soccer for where we can at least put shoes on you. Yeah,
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: and that's some of the stuff that watch the Pele documentary,
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: watch that stuff happens. Yeah, Peley didn't come from a
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: twenty thousand dollars a year academy system.
- 1:05:09Speaker 6: Are you kidding me? Us?
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Great, that's what I'm talking I'm talking about grassroots scouting,
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: where it doesn't matter how much your parents make, It
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: doesn't matter where you live, it doesn't matter all. What
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: matters is can you play and do you want to play?
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: And the answer is yes, and I'd love to Then
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: you play, and you play the best players from the
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: worst areas of the country. I should say worst is
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: a bad pejorative term. Let me say the most disadvantaged
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: places in the country. Then have a chance to make it.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: That's what I'm talking about. I have not told anything
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: about tax dollars in common. I'm just talking about equal
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: opportunity for all who would want it or have the
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: skills to do it. And that does not exist when
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: a pay for play system, period. And soccer's not the
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: only sport. No Baseball's gotten this way. I mentioned football
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: with its ridiculous seven on sevens in the offseason. That
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: leads into the specialization of one sport and the kids
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: not developing a mental acuity and pressure and all that
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: stuff to play at a high level of any sport.
- 1:06:07Speaker 8: Yeah, I think you should be bad at something before
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: you're really good at something.
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: There's that too. There's that too.
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: Yeah, fortune me back to my shot putting days.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: A lot of people on the text line share this
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: sentiment four two five. I think your question to start
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: to show about soccer was answered by Mike McDonald.
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: We do not care.
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: Oh how so many people cared?
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: There are a lot of people who paid thousands of
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: dollars who obviously did care the.
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: Two five three, but there are some who don't.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: I'm not saying this person's wrong and obviously feel the
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: two five to three. This is my first soccer game
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: I've ever watched, and it was evident to my noviceize
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: how much better Belgium was much better? Three six h
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: As for the crowd, the average fan can't afford to
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: attend the games. Unfortunately, the NFL is trending that way
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: as well. The blue collars can't for sure, and it's
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: creeping into the white collar world as well. Four two five.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: I'm didn't sure what that is referencing and move on.
- 1:07:05Speaker 8: Okay, Sometimes we read these ahead of time, guys.
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: Sometimes we're in the moment.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: Three six gave soccer a shot to the US team
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: in the local aspect of the tournament. The spectacle, enthusiasm
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: the crowd was obvious. The flopping, drama and political comments
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: are a turnoff, ending my experiment with football total with
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: a You bring on the real football with two o's.
- 1:07:31Speaker 7: Well, we're not that far away from our football. But
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:07:36Speaker 8: I I always enjoy the World Cup, even though I'm
- 1:07:39Speaker 8: not a soccer aficionado and I am zero expert.
- 1:07:43Speaker 7: I always enjoy it, and I think that's okay.
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: It is okay.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: The four five says the biggest problem with USA soccer
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: is talent. For sure, our best athletes are not interested
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: in the sport.
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: Is that true, though?
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: Are the beth athletes aren't interested in paying thousands and
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: tens of thousand dollars? Families aren't and they are preconditioned
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: to not even look at soccer because of how expensive
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: it is to play at the highest level. Is my
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: two cents about that?
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: A lot of the best athletes don't even think about soccer.
- 1:08:16Speaker 8: Yeah, it takes you away from other sports because when
- 1:08:20Speaker 8: you're a child athlete, you want to play everything. Yes, yeah,
- 1:08:26Speaker 8: so when one becomes too specialized to compete in others.
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: I think that that's a problem.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: For instance, the club soccer program, you play summer tournaments,
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: you play a fall schedule. The girls in Washington State,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: the girls' high school soccer season is in the fall
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: and the boys are in the spring.
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: They're split.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: That's for field issues, coaching issues, refereeing issues, all kinds
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: of things. So the clubs the only time they take
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: off is during the high school season. And this is
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: the clubs that are not academy who allow you to
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: play high school sports. And if outside of that, what
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: is that the end of February to the beginning of May.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: Window later in May, if you qualify for the state
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: tournament in soccer, those are the only times you don't
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: play club socer. You play club soccer the rest of
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: the year. Why, because you have to pay money to play,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: and the money you want to show up. They want
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: the revenues to keep flowing in those months that are
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: not taken up by high school soccer.
- 1:09:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I just you know when I had alluded to
- 1:09:28Speaker 8: this earlier, But I was volleyball was my number one,
- 1:09:31Speaker 8: Basketball was my number two, and then track was my
- 1:09:35Speaker 8: number three.
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: If I didn't.
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: Play those other sports, I would not have been successful
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: and I loved it. I loved every single second of it.
- 1:09:44Speaker 8: I learned so much from the different teammates that you have.
- 1:09:47Speaker 8: It's not the same people that play the same sports too.
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: I just I don't want it getting taken away from
- 1:09:54Speaker 8: the youth.
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: Three six, says a high school graduate in nineteen seventies here.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: Not a big fan of soccer and my other athletic
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: but the flopping and weird penalties. They can say all
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: they want about our football game in quotes, meaning American football,
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: but I'll take the Hawks and Huskies any day of
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: the week. Yeah, and I get that sentiment. And you're
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: not alone in that regard for sure. Any stick out
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: to juj just one. I'm just rattling them off.
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: Oh no, I didn't know if I was gonna continue.
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: Yes, there were a couple of ones that did stick
- 1:10:29Speaker 8: out to me.
- 1:10:29Speaker 6: Keith.
- 1:10:30Speaker 7: Obviously, we love Keith.
- 1:10:31Speaker 8: He always text in soccer will always be a fringe
- 1:10:34Speaker 8: sport in our country. But I believe we'll drew Or
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: doing a hell of a job hosting the World Cup,
- 1:10:39Speaker 8: and I would agree with that. I've been down there
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: a couple of times for the games that we've had
- 1:10:44Speaker 8: right here in Seattle, and I think we are doing
- 1:10:47Speaker 8: a hell of a job.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: Two five three, So specializing in one sport as a
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: serious detriment in this state.
- 1:10:53Speaker 6: And I would submit in this country.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: How many young baseball players have scars in their elbows
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: from premature surgery just horrible. In fact, because of special
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: las in baseball, there are pictures who as teenagers. I'd
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: learned this from coaching high school baseball. Teenage pitchers are
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: getting pre emptive Tommy john Surgers.
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't like that.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: What I know elbow ligament replacement surgeries just so you
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: don't need one later.
- 1:11:20Speaker 7: No, that's a that's a little too far.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: Squeezey baking powder. What two sex Belgium was just a
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: playing better team. Yes they are. They were two three
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: two five three echoes with Anderson Hurst and I were
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: talking about this morning. Absolutely one hundred percent of the
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: problem was lack of energy by the USA, but hyper
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: energy by Belgium.
- 1:11:44Speaker 8: I mean they just rode that comeback into the wind
- 1:11:48Speaker 8: and kept going.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: Our man Nico Moreno, we talked yesterday from when we
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: were at Jimmy's had a theory in the press box
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: yesterday in the first half that he thought all the
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: Balligan controversy and situation, bulletin boar material for Belgium and
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: inspired them in a way they had not been inspired
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: any of the World Cup matches.
- 1:12:05Speaker 8: He thought it would do that for the US though,
- 1:12:08Speaker 8: That's what I thought.
- 1:12:09Speaker 7: I thought that, you know, when he got.
- 1:12:11Speaker 8: To come back, that it would be bulletin board in
- 1:12:14Speaker 8: a positive way for America.
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: I was after the match. The players, to a man,
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: they were asked, all asked about it. So was the
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: coach Potzaccino, they said, did not have an effect on
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: US ball Again, I was there for his mix own.
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: He said, he is.
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: He had accepted he wasn't playing. He knew the rules
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: if he got a red card. He accepted he got
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: a red card. He didn't agree with it, but he accepted, Okay,
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: I got it, and he knew the rules were, if
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: you get a red card, you sit out the next match.
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: He said he had accepted that, and then he said
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: when he got told, he didn't know how it happened,
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: but he just got told, now you're planing. He goes, okay,
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: he accepted that too, but he claimed he had no
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: and it's probably right, is he doesn't know the best
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: machinations that went into that. But the US players said
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: that they were not. Of course they're going to say that,
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: I guess, but they were not affect good by it.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: Two five three, And tell our best athletes play soccer.
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: We will always be mediocre.
- 1:13:06Speaker 8: That's exactly the point I was getting to when I
- 1:13:09Speaker 8: talked about cross pollination of sports is yeah, we are
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: not a soccer forward country.
- 1:13:17Speaker 7: That's right, which is fine.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: Two four oh, US soccer will never be on the
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: same level as these other World Cup countries for two reasons.
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: The first is our best best athletes don't play soccer
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: in the second is these other countries it is their sport.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Our sport is the NFL. It is on the world stage. Yes,
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: it was huge. The two five three says on the
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: world stage Seahawks and Mariners big games are memorable and lasting.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: This will be long forgotten soon, not sure about that,
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: and a decent distraction until we get into the thick
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: of the sports that matter. All caps matter here in
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: the States.
- 1:13:53Speaker 7: Well that's subjective.
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: Yeah, of course that we have. That's why we asked
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: for your opinion on the text time.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: So that's not how you represent the USA exclamation mark.
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: Well, let's end on the three six oh.
- 1:14:08Speaker 8: I just want to say how much I appreciate this show.
- 1:14:10Speaker 8: I love you guys, ah, I always love love.
- 1:14:13Speaker 6: Was that your mom? Is that your dad?
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: Probably here?
- 1:14:17Speaker 8: It comes from the three six oh, and they are
- 1:14:19Speaker 8: definitely in the five one six.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: I appreciate that three So thank you. Love listening to
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: you guys from Canku.
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: Of course you probably love listening to anything from can Kun.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: But maybe this time of year it's a little toasty
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: down there.
- 1:14:31Speaker 8: I'd be happy in Kano right now, So I appreciate that.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: Tommy Jonas for a velocity two of sixes, yes, yes,
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: but when you don't need it in your elbow liqumen.
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: It's fine.
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: You're eleven, yeah, okay.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: And Fornessa's here the mayor of Maple Valley came in
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: with a pizza.
- 1:14:49Speaker 6: He's not sharing that, I don't think.
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: Well, he'll share his thoughts on what he's going to
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: do for the show and his show twelve to three
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: next on ninety three point three KJRFM. You want them
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: I at all right, all right here I f is
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: in from Maple Valley. The mayor's with us. He's about
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: what two weeks one week from your two weeks. No,
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: it's Friday.
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: Well this week, yeah, it's Friday. I lost track. I
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: have to.
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: His big golf tournament down and I have too what
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: type of that tell us? Is anything new this year?
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: You got how many entries?
- 1:15:40Speaker 17: I mean it sells out in two seconds? So borderline
- 1:15:43Speaker 17: over sould. It's yeah, it's exciting. We do a good job.
- 1:15:46Speaker 17: We job we do. We have a lot of fun
- 1:15:49Speaker 17: out there. People come out and it's yeah, it's just
- 1:15:52Speaker 17: it's crazy. It's there's there's a lot. It's always inspirational.
- 1:15:56Speaker 17: It's always kind of cool to meet up with old
- 1:15:59Speaker 17: friends that have been playing in it for some of
- 1:16:01Speaker 17: them twelve, thirteen, fourteen years.
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that's great.
- 1:16:04Speaker 17: And then you know, raise some money for some really
- 1:16:07Speaker 17: worthy smaller foundations and causes and make a little bit
- 1:16:10Speaker 17: of a difference. Our people that play in it are
- 1:16:13Speaker 17: very generous and so I got some great, great people
- 1:16:16Speaker 17: that support it too. So yeah, it's it's fun. It's fun.
- 1:16:19Speaker 17: I'll check with you on the fifteen or the Saturday.
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: Well, Jess, it's worth restating the causes that you are
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: contributing to raising awareness for, and not just that but
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: money and actually making a difference.
- 1:16:31Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean Jordan Morri's foundation is great. You know,
- 1:16:33Speaker 17: in this day and age, we're talking a lot of soccer.
- 1:16:35Speaker 17: I mean, it's funny. I mean, well, I think he
- 1:16:37Speaker 17: would have been more of a difference maker than Polistic.
- 1:16:39Speaker 17: But that aside, he's a difference maker off the field
- 1:16:42Speaker 17: with people with young people with type one diabetes, whether
- 1:16:44Speaker 17: it's support at Children's hospital for families that are recently diagnosed.
- 1:16:48Speaker 17: Ours was one of them. That's how we first got evaulved.
- 1:16:51Speaker 17: And then he does a thing before every match home
- 1:16:55Speaker 17: and Away with the Sounders, meeting with a young person
- 1:16:58Speaker 17: who has and just been recently diagnosed with type one diabetes.
- 1:17:01Speaker 17: Has a soccer camp for kids only have that only
- 1:17:03Speaker 17: have type one diabetes in Preston every summer, which is
- 1:17:06Speaker 17: a remarkable scene if you can just imagine having two
- 1:17:10Speaker 17: hundred kids and they take breaks so they can all
- 1:17:13Speaker 17: check their blood sugar, get a little gatorayed break, raise
- 1:17:17Speaker 17: it up and yeah, well most of them now have
- 1:17:18Speaker 17: dex comms, have the little desk colm and stuff, and
- 1:17:21Speaker 17: which is a funny thing because that's a whole nother
- 1:17:23Speaker 17: thing that's come up with. You know, these schools that say,
- 1:17:26Speaker 17: you can't have a cell phone in class, and most
- 1:17:28Speaker 17: of these kids when they get to a certain aid
- 1:17:30Speaker 17: have to have a cell phone because it tells their
- 1:17:32Speaker 17: but that aside, Yeah, it's it's so he does some
- 1:17:34Speaker 17: remarkable work. Avery Huffman DIPG Brendon Huffan's a good friend
- 1:17:37Speaker 17: of the show, going back to my days in Portland.
- 1:17:40Speaker 17: His daughter had a horrific disease called DIPG. It's just
- 1:17:44Speaker 17: a it's a form of a pediatric brain cancer, brain
- 1:17:46Speaker 17: tumbe that's inoperable. When you get that diagnosis, it's it's
- 1:17:50Speaker 17: basically it's just quality.
- 1:17:51Speaker 15: Of life at that point. So we're doing they're doing
- 1:17:54Speaker 15: great research.
- 1:17:55Speaker 17: University of Washington, Fred hutch Stanford University, all doing some
- 1:17:58Speaker 17: incredible research on that. So, man, we got to get
- 1:18:00Speaker 17: to the point where that goes away and there is
- 1:18:02Speaker 17: hope not there yet, but we're working. And then Helensky's
- 1:18:06Speaker 17: hope for mental health awareness for young student athletes, So
- 1:18:09Speaker 17: which is near and dear to all our hearts. And
- 1:18:12Speaker 17: got to know the Olninsky family really well. You know,
- 1:18:15Speaker 17: one of those occasions you've gone through this as a reporter.
- 1:18:19Speaker 17: Myself and Erica Witherwich was an old photographer at Fox
- 1:18:22Speaker 17: thirteen short for the Seahawks. Now, Eric and I did.
- 1:18:26Speaker 17: It's funny, I say, I hesitant to say this. We
- 1:18:29Speaker 17: did the first interview with the Lensky's before there were
- 1:18:31Speaker 17: the national ones, before others that did stuff with it.
- 1:18:35Speaker 17: We sat down with him in a park in Bellevue
- 1:18:37Speaker 17: with Kim and her oldest son, Kelly, and it was remarkable.
- 1:18:41Speaker 15: A couple hours.
- 1:18:43Speaker 17: And at the one point she says, you know, we're
- 1:18:45Speaker 17: starting to Lensky's Hope and you're going to help, and
- 1:18:47Speaker 17: you're going to help, and she points to me and
- 1:18:48Speaker 17: my photographer. I look back, Erica's crying, I mean, and
- 1:18:52Speaker 17: I said, yeah, we're gonna we'll do something. So we've
- 1:18:53Speaker 17: been raising money for Lensky's Hope for years and they,
- 1:18:57Speaker 17: you know, the money there goes directly to their A
- 1:18:59Speaker 17: bill need to go out and meet with They do
- 1:19:01Speaker 17: it called Tyler Talks, and they meet with student athletes
- 1:19:03Speaker 17: across the country. They've actually expanded into talking to military
- 1:19:06Speaker 17: as well. Yeah, to young military members because you know, well, right,
- 1:19:12Speaker 17: there's the mental stress that they go through and depression
- 1:19:14Speaker 17: and everything else.
- 1:19:17Speaker 15: Very very high, very high.
- 1:19:18Speaker 17: So they do remarkable work and Ryan Hilliskey who is
