- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in New York for the annual Mayors Trophy Exhibition Game on May 15, 1975.
- 0:15The Mayors Trophy game was a New York baseball tradition, which originally featured matches between the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, and occasionally the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 0:24In 1963, six years after the Giants and Dodgers left town, the tradition was revived when the Mets stepped in to face the Yankees.
- 0:32Decades before interleague play was part of the regular season, these games were well received by New Yorkers and played primarily to benefit Sandlock Baseball in New York City.
- 0:40This is the 13th matchup between the Mets and the Yankees, called on the radio featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Dom Valentino.
- 1:01Good evening everybody and welcome to Shea Stadium in New York. Tonight's the 13th annual Mayors Trophy game between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. I'll be chatting with my pregame guests. Yankee outfielder Luke Vanella will be back in a moment.
- 1:17Announcing the Spirit of 76 Excursion Fair. Ozark Airlines is getting the Spirit of 76 early by lowering fares in 75 on certain flights in certain areas. The farther you fly, the more you'll save.
- 1:31There are some requirements such as travel days when tickets must be purchased length of stay, but call your professional travel advisor or Ozark Airlines for details of Ozark's Spirit of 76 Excursion Fair.
- 1:53Hi, I'm Joan Hamburg. I'll be talking with you every Monday through Friday from 10 to noon about everything important to all of us. Our visiting experts will help you cope with life in and around the city. Listen to my bargain reviews of restaurants, nightclubs, and everything. Call me at 489-1155.
- 2:21New York Yankees warm up is Luke Vanella, the slugging outfielder of the New York Yankees. Luke, last Friday you were in Oakland and then the ball club had you come back to New York for the Disney spells that you were having. Exactly what happened.
- 2:37Well that's right, Don. Last Friday I visited a doctor in Oakland. He told me that he didn't know exactly what was wrong with me, but he saw a lot of movement in my eyes that proved to him that I was dizzy and he suggested that I come back to New York and see the team doctor.
- 2:56And I did do that. I flew back Sunday and the team doctor sent me to Dr. Brookler, which is an ear specialist here in town, and extensive tests were made on me and I think the analysis was that I did have an ear infection that was causing all my problems.
- 3:14Luke, how did this all come about and when did it first start? When did you first notice it? Well, I've had this now for the last two and a half, three weeks. I don't know how it came about. The doctor more or less thought that it might have come from bad cold or sore throat or something and moved up into the inner passages inside my head.
- 3:37But he doesn't really know and I don't know either. I know that about two and a half weeks ago I was eating supper with my wife and I just started getting dizzy and from then on I'd get these spells of dizziness a few times a day and the last few days before I left the club I had them all the time and I just couldn't perform.
- 3:58How about at the plate? Did you ever get a dizzy spell while you were in the batter's box? No, I played two games in Baltimore and I saw the ball quite well. I wasn't feeling well at the time but there was no excuse for not hitting.
- 4:13The only thing that might have bothered me a little bit was the speed of the ball because maybe I didn't judge it as well. But outside of that I saw the ball good and I played two ball games and what gave me more problems than anything was catching fly balls. I wanted to make sure that I was braced every time the ball was hit to me.
- 4:29Luke, please stand by. We'll continue with our pregame guest, Luke Pinnella, outfielder with the Yankees in a moment. We'll be back in a moment.
- 4:37Like many people you may be growing vegetables and fruit to help beat the high cost of food or growing ornamental flowers simply for their beauty.
- 4:47But your flowers, vegetables, and fruit could be attacked and destroyed at any time by aphids, leaf hoppers, flea beetles, and other bugs you may never even have heard of.
- 4:58There are many different insecticides you could buy to combat all those different bugs but you need only one. Spectracide lawn and garden insect control. It's really effective.
- 5:12Spectracide controls a wide range of bugs and can be used on your lawn and shrubs as well as your vegetables, fruit, and flowers. Spectracide is available in four easy to use forms. Liquid concentrate, aerosol spray, garden dust, and granular for use only on lawns. Spectracide, the all purpose insecticide.
- 5:38Back to yourself and the hitting and of course you were one of the leading hitters in the American League last season and there's an old saying that everybody wears out that cream comes to the top and I'm sure it's going to in your case because you're a real good hitter.
- 5:54There are some other ball players in the club that are undergoing the same problem. What happens when you get into a slump like this?
- 6:01Well, a lot of things really happen. Maybe players start pressing a little bit too much. Maybe they start thinking a little bit too much of the problem and they're not watching the ball. More or less worried about the hands and feet and so forth.
- 6:16But it's tough. When you're not hitting a baseball, you're pressing a little more than you usually do when you're hitting the ball well at home plate. You say, well I have to get a base hit this time and I have to get a base hit and sooner or later things get a little worse.
- 6:31But I think that you made a correct statement. There is a lot of ability on this ball club and even though the players as a whole haven't performed, there are quite a few players that are playing quite well. The talent is here and usually over the course of the summer the people that have done well and played well are going to play well again.
- 6:51Lou, you're physically okay now though. The ear infection is gone and you're ready to go. Well, I would say it's gone but I would say that it's subsided quite a bit. I feel much better and I talked to the doctor this morning and he told me to work out the night. If I feel fine, I can start playing over the weekend if the manager wants me to.
- 7:12Well, we certainly hope we see you in that lineup real soon. Lou, the very best of luck to yourself and the Yankees. Thank you, Dr. Tarkin. We'll be back in a moment.
- 7:42From 7 to 10, Saturday afternoons from 3 to 8.
- 7:46WMCA, New York, New York.
- 7:53Announcing the spirit of 76 Excursion Fair.
- 7:57Ozark Airlines is getting the spirit of 76 early by lowering fares in 75 on certain flights in certain areas. The farther you fly, the more you'll save. There are some requirements such as travel days when tickets must be purchased length of stay.
- 8:12But call your professional travel advisor or Ozark Airlines for details of Ozark's spirit of 76 Excursion Fair.
- 8:26The Yankees and the New York Mets here at Shea Stadium in the 13th annual Mears Trophy game. And tonight's game finds both teams having won six games.
- 8:36The Mets will be pitching George Stone. He has been pitching in the Mets extended spring training program in St. Petersburg, Florida.
- 8:44He pitched for the Mets against the United States Military Academy at West Point last Monday on May 5th and allowed one hit in four innings of pitching.
- 8:53He retired the last 11 batters. Since then, he's made one pitching appearance in Florida, pitching one hitless inning last Saturday before the game was called because of rain.
- 9:02He was placed on the disabled list on April 1st and had been on the disabled list from August the 9th of last season until the end of the 1974 season.
- 9:14Although the Yankees have called up Bob Johnson from Syracuse and Ken Clay from West Haven, the starter for the Yankees tonight will be Mike Wallace.
- 9:25Wallace does not have any record. He has two appearances and he has pitched 4.1 innings of pitching, allowed 10 hits, seven runs. All seven have been earned.
- 9:36And we're going to be back very shortly with the start of the game. Stay tuned for New York Yankee baseball.
- 9:55When it's time to play ball, get up the home plate and bat against inflation by shopping in the Cross County Center in Yonkers.
- 10:03Pile up a winning score in shopping values throughout Cross County's famous stores.
- 10:08Stores like Gimbals, Wanamakers, Wallachs, Lubens, Wallace Corning, Lerner Shops, Franklin Simon, Paperback Booksmiths, Woolworths, Walgreens, and many, many more.
- 10:20Big stores and little stores, specialty shops and fashion boutiques like The Gap and Roman.
- 10:26Restaurants like Wilskers and the Red Coach Grill, finance supermarkets, service stores, a great team of merchants determined to give you more of everything, especially value and savings.
- 10:38Enjoy Yankee-style bargains in the heart of Yankee country, the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers, where the New York thruway meets the Cross County Parkway.
- 10:49This is Roy White of the New York Yankees. When I'm not playing ball, I listen to John Sterling right here on WMCA New York.
- 10:56Today's game is brought to you by the New York State Vacation Land, your guide to the New York State vacation of your life.
- 11:21By the Brewers of Schaeffer Beer as another major event in the Schaeffer Circle of Sports.
- 11:26And by Getty Premium, the gasoline that sells for 2 to 2 and 1 half cents less per gallon than most other major premiums.
- 11:34And by the New York, New Jersey Fairfield County Dodge Board.
- 11:39We're now offering $200 cash rebates on Dodge, Darts and Vans.
- 11:57Hi everybody. Welcome back to Schaeffer Stadium. This is Phil Rizzuto along with Don Valentino, Frank Messer.
- 12:03Bill White has the night off tonight, but we're all here to help pay tribute to the Sandlot kids of the metropolitan area.
- 12:11And these games between the Mets and the Yankees, the Mayors Trophy games, benefit those youngsters.
- 12:17And Don Valentino having played many, many games in the Sandlots of New York, I can appreciate what they're doing for the kids.
- 12:24It's amazing the amount of money that has been raised, Bill. $1,360,000 plus. That's a lot of money.
- 12:33That's a lot of money and it goes to a great cause.
- 12:35And Don, it's good to be back with you again. I know you rooted hard. I know we all did out in the West Coast rooting for those Islanders and they almost made it.
- 12:43They sure did. And they're going to be here on Saturday night. They'll be honored before the game.
- 12:48Bill, the Western trip for the Yankees that just concluded, in fact, the overall trip, 2-8. Anything in particular wrong, do you think?
- 12:57Well, the only thing that was wrong is that they were on the losing end of the score and they were in every ballgame except one.
- 13:03That was the game where Milwaukee really creamed them, if you remember.
- 13:07But in every other ballgame, they were in the game until the final out of the ballgame.
- 13:11And once again, it was the fact they couldn't get that one key hit to break the game wide open.
- 13:16Bobby Bonds looks like he's coming out of it. He's starting to hit the ball a little more solid.
- 13:21And once he does, I think it'll be a different story.
- 13:24You know, you've been stressing that. And since you have been stressing the clutch hit, the key hit, you sort of look for things.
- 13:34And it really is stuck in my craw. And I was going through the Oakland press guy and I got to Sal Bando, who hit 243 last year, yet had 103 RBI.
- 13:45And finished second in the league. And Oakland finished second to last in hitting in the league.
- 13:51And yet one of the top teams in RBI's. And that must be the reason they won.
- 13:55Exactly right, Don. They get the big hit when they need it.
- 13:58And somebody different every day would do it for that club. A Reggie Jackson, a Sal Bando, Joe Rudy, Gene Tennant.
- 14:05And that's what they're waiting for the Yankees. And what's hurting the Yankees right now is the fact that Ronnie Bloomberg can't swing a bat.
- 14:11Oh, that's got to hurt with his stick. Phil, here are the lineups for tonight's game.
- 14:16For the New York Mets, Mike Phillips will be a shortstop leading off.
- 14:20Felix Miana, second base, batting second. Batting third in center field, Del Unser.
- 14:25In right field, batting fourth, Rusty Stobbs. John Milder will be at first base batting fifth.
- 14:31At third base, Wayne Garrett. He'll bat sixth. Dave Kingman will bat seventh and play left field.
- 14:36John Stearns will be behind the plate batting eighth and George Stone will be on the mound.
- 14:42For the Yankees, Roy White will lead off and play in left field.
- 14:45In center field, batting second, Elliot Maddox. In right field, Bobby Bonds batting third.
- 14:50Chris Chambliss will bat fourth and he will be at first base.
- 14:54Walt Williams will be at third base batting fifth. Rick Dempsey behind the plate batting sixth.
- 15:00At shortstop, batting seventh, Jim Mason. Fred Stanley will be at second base batting eighth.
- 15:08And Mike Wallace will be on the mound for the Yankees.
- 15:12Let's pause 15 seconds for a station identification. This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 15:18Hi, this is George Milder for the Yankees. When I'm not playing ball, I listen to Bob Grant right here on WMCA New York.
- 15:31Good crowd here again tonight, Phil. And unfortunately, we've had some threatening skies, but it does look like it's going to be a fine evening.
- 15:45You know, Dom, I had thought this was the earliest that a Mayors Trophy game had ever been played, but I see on May the 3rd, 1965 at Yankee Stadium, they had played one.
- 15:57And this is the second earliest game. They also had one on May the 10th at Shea Stadium here.
- 16:03And this could possibly be the smallest crowd, and I was thinking because it was so early in the year.
- 16:09And with both the Yankees and the Mets not playing up to their potential right now, the interest isn't there, but they're coming in and it could be a surprising crowd.
- 16:18Jim Catfish Hunter. Jim is really living up to the advance billing, isn't he? He's really pitching.
- 16:25I'd say the Yankees are very happy now that they made that investment in Catfish because he is pitching now, especially out in Oakland.
- 16:32And everybody said, well, he's so used to pitching out there.
- 16:35And that was a funny thing, Dom, because the interesting thing in the paper, interviewing the ballplayers for Oakland who had played with Catfish,
- 16:43and then interviewing Catfish to see who would have the advantage.
- 16:47In other words, Gene Tennis, who caught Catfish in almost all his games, struck out all three times against him.
- 16:53He said, that son of a gun changed his style of pitching against me.
- 16:56Is that right?
- 16:57So Catfish, you know, is a smart pitcher as well as an excellent pitcher.
- 17:00And I'm sure before the year is over, it'll be between 25 and 30 wins for Hunter.
- 17:05That's good to hear. Of course, the two wins the Yankees have in the last 10 belong to Catfish Hunter.
- 17:12But the Yankees now have a good long home stand and with that possibly can turn it around.
- 17:18Well, a lot of times when you get home, you're playing a lot better. You're on a road trip.
- 17:23Things are going bad. You can't wait to get back with all the loyal fans here.
- 17:27And they are tonight. They're just about split down the middle, Mets and Yankees.
- 17:31And that always makes for a lot of excitement.
- 17:34And look who's ambling up the home plate. Peter Lawrence, Yogi Berra.
- 17:39And nobody's got to walk like Yogi except Henry Armetta.
- 17:43You remember Henry Armetta in the movie? No, you're a little too young, Don.
- 17:46Too young for that film.
- 17:47Too young. But anyway, Henry had one shoulder that dipped down and one knee that went to right field and one to left.
- 17:52And that's the way Yogi walks.
- 17:55You know, he had an amazing career when I ever looked up all the stats for Yogi.
- 18:00What a ball player.
- 18:01The greatest clutch ball player I think that I've ever played with or against.
- 18:05When I say clutch, when the chips were down and you needed a hit or when you had to throw somebody out,
- 18:10Yogi would be the man to do it.
- 18:12It seemed like he would not play up to his best unless there was a clutch situation.
- 18:17I got to ask you, Phil, the youngster that came up to the booth in Milwaukee
- 18:22and showed you the Phil Rizzuto glove who wouldn't take money but wanted two gloves autographed by Yogi Berra.
- 18:29Have you told Yogi yet?
- 18:30No, I haven't had a chance.
- 18:31As a matter of fact, I didn't get to see him tonight, but I'm sure going to see him before we see that kid in Milwaukee again.
- 18:37Because that will be something a Phil Rizzuto catches glove.
- 18:40That's going to be a classic.
- 18:42Yeah, the one and only.
- 18:45And of course, Yogi has done an outstanding job.
- 18:48And he and a man I know you think so highly of, Joe McCarthy, if I'm not mistaken,
- 18:53are the only two to have won pennants in both leagues.
- 18:56That's right.
- 18:57Now, the thing I like about Yogi, and you can say the same thing for Bill Burton,
- 19:02they don't panic when things go bad.
- 19:04The worst thing a manager can do is suddenly push the panic button, start making changes, start making shifts,
- 19:11getting on his players and upsetting them.
- 19:13And this way, if you keep calm and you do come out of it, then they've got a lot more respect for you.
- 19:17And they play a little harder for you.
- 19:20The Mets, of course, still have a real shot in their division of the National League.
- 19:25The season is very, very early.
- 19:27And I see that Dave Kingman is really coming along for the Mets.
- 19:32Well, that was a big deal.
- 19:33The Mets needed some power, and they've got it with Kingman.
- 19:35And as we mentioned before, Dom, you and I, some of the best deals are the deals that were not made.
- 19:41For the Mets, it was Rusty Stobb.
- 19:42For the Yankees, it was Roy White.
- 19:45Both of them having great starts.
- 19:47Roy White, tremendous on-base average and hitting the long ball occasionally, but when it's needed.
- 19:53And stealing bases at a pace just under Bobby Bond.
- 19:57So by not getting rid of Roy White, they've, and especially with Lou Pennella being injured.
- 20:02When you say injured, he has that in your interview with Lou, which was very interesting before the game.
- 20:08He was quite upset, but now that he knows what the trouble is, his mind is much more at ease.
- 20:14It's got to be, Phil, you've gone through it so many times, and you always think the worst, don't you?
- 20:21Oh, yes, you've got to.
- 20:22Your mind is sometimes a terrible thing.
- 20:25It runs away with you.
- 20:26And in Lou's case, he had no idea what was troubling him.
- 20:30He'd feel good for a couple of days and then feel bad for a couple of days.
- 20:33And that's the worst feeling in the world.
- 20:35You want to get to the root of the trouble, and then maybe you can eliminate it.
- 20:38Well, the ball game is being held up a little bit.
- 20:43We'll check the scoreboard for you.
- 20:46Kansas City is at Boston after two innings.
- 20:49There's no score.
- 20:50Cleveland and Minnesota, we have no report.
- 20:53And the Milwaukee Brewers and the Texas Rangers are two to two.
- 20:59Over in the National League, the Chicago Cubs defeated Houston four to two this afternoon in Atlanta.
- 21:07Got by Montreal eight to seven.
- 21:09And in the ninth inning, Cincinnati leads Philadelphia three to two.
- 21:16Here it's the Mayor's Trophy Game, the 13th annual.
- 21:20And each team has won six games.
- 21:23And Phil Rizzuto, an exhibition game.
- 21:26I know it may not be as big as a regular season game, but the guys work hard, don't they?
- 21:31I want to tell you, this game means as much to both the Mets and the Yankees
- 21:35and to the fans of the Mets and the Yankees
- 21:38as any important game they'll play this year.
- 21:41This can continue right through the winter, the Hot Stove League,
- 21:44trying to decide which is the better team.
- 21:48And now, join us for the National Anthem.
- 22:18The National Anthem.
- 22:37The National Anthem.
- 22:57The National Anthem.
- 23:15Well, Phil, on Saturday night, the Yankees are going to be honoring the New York Islanders
- 23:21in a special presentation.
- 23:23And Phil, the many years I've been involved as a broadcaster, I must admit,
- 23:28I have never seen a group of athletes work so hard, put so much effort
- 23:33into one particular project as these youngsters did for the Islanders.
- 23:37And of course, I know you're very proud of them, all of New York is, and they should be.
- 23:41They did a great job.
- 23:42Oh, an exceptional job.
- 23:44A young team that wanted to play and wanted to win so badly for Al Arbor,
- 23:49who you know much better than I,
- 23:51but everything I've heard about Al Arbor has been great.
- 23:54And when you've got a coach like that, you want to play your heart out, the Islanders did.
- 23:58And they captured the fancy of, I think, everybody all over the United States,
- 24:03because when we were on the West Coast, everybody wanted to know how the Islanders were doing.
- 24:07They had a TV going in the third game, which the Islanders pulled out 2-1.
- 24:13And it was great.
- 24:17Well, Phil, getting set now is George Stone.
- 24:21Here's a guy that's had trouble with the same type of ailment as Mel Stottlemeyer, isn't it?
- 24:27Yes, that's that rotary cuff.
- 24:29If you get an injury to that, you tear the muscle right around the shoulder.
- 24:34Not only is it very painful, but you cannot throw as hard as you would like.
- 24:39And even right now, with Stone loosening up, kind of looks like he's aiming the ball.
- 24:44You don't like to see any pitcher get an injury like that.
- 24:47You know who had that same type of injury and had to hang him up?
- 24:50Don Drysdale. I didn't realize that.
- 24:52The exact same injury. And he said it was so painful that he had to take every hour, six,
- 24:59either aspirin or Darvan or something, and you still couldn't kill the pain,
- 25:03but it would be a little bit more bearable.
- 25:06But all you're doing is making the tear a little bigger.
- 25:09And so he said when he went to the doctor, the doctor told him, as he did Mel Stottlemeyer,
- 25:14one day you're not going to be able to raise your arm to comb your hair.
- 25:18And that's when he decided to call it quits.
- 25:20Man, that ought to tell you something right there.
- 25:22And Stone, of course, would make a big difference to Yogi's ball club, wouldn't he?
- 25:26George Stone, he'd make a big difference to the Mets, wouldn't he?
- 25:29Oh, absolutely. Every team needs that fourth starter, and the Mets haven't quite found him yet.
- 25:34Though their big three right now looks like they've turned around Tom Siever,
- 25:38who along with Catfish Hunter and Nolan Ryan, I think, are the best pitchers in the big leagues.
- 25:43Even though they're a couple others have won seven ball games,
- 25:47some of the Dodger fans will give you arguments with Don Sutton.
- 25:51But Siever, Matlack and Kuzmin have come around.
- 25:54I'm happy for Yogi to see that.
- 25:57All right, the ball game, getting ready to start.
- 26:00And listen to this crowd. You know, that's something you miss on the road, Dom.
- 26:04The other crowds are so polite.
- 26:06You can hear a pin drop, but here is excitement on every pitch, and I miss it.
- 26:11When you're from New York, there's no place like New York.
- 26:14The first pitch to Roy White is a curve low. No, it's not.
- 26:18I've got to watch these National League umpires. That's Doug Harvey behind the plate.
- 26:22Hank Saw, a former American League umpire at first, and Dutch Renwick at third.
- 26:27Blowing away, that's one-on-one.
- 26:30National League was such a great difference in their style of umpiring.
- 26:35They stand between the catcher and the batter.
- 26:38The left-hander kicks, and the pitch is over the outside corner.
- 26:46So it's a ball and two strikes on Roy White.
- 26:49And Roy had an excellent trip out to the West Coast.
- 26:54A foul's one back into the crowd.
- 26:57And there's the first souvenir of the night.
- 27:00In hockey, when the puck goes in the stands, Dom, they allowed to keep it?
- 27:04Yes. Oh, okay.
- 27:06Because I notice in tennis they've got to throw the ball back. I can't believe that.
- 27:10Well...
- 27:14All right, Stone gets the sign.
- 27:17John Stern's the rookie doing the catching tonight.
- 27:20Big curve is high, two and two.
- 27:23Two and two.
- 27:29Wayne Garrett deep at third, not too far from the line.
- 27:34The two-two pitch, a curve swing, and a missed strike three.
- 27:38Took just a little bit off, and Roy White is struck out.
- 27:43And I notice Roy White almost started for the first base dugout, Dom,
- 27:47because that's where the Yankees normally have their dugout.
- 27:50It's got to be a little strange for them being at a different location for this one ball game.
- 27:55It is. It makes a big difference. Here's Elliott Maddox.
- 27:58Right up there with Roy White having a great year.
- 28:01Boy, he and White have been getting on a lot for those men coming up in back of them.
- 28:06Outside, ball one.
- 28:08Dick Hauser coaching at third.
- 28:10Elston Howard over at first.
- 28:13Stone winds, and the curve is high, ball two, two and up.
- 28:18Elliott hitting three thirty-nine.
- 28:21Roy White batting three twenty-nine.
- 28:24And both of them have a tremendous on-base average.
- 28:28The two-oh pitch, swing and a miss, two and one.
- 28:33This is a big, big ball game, Dom, for this kid, George Stone, as you mentioned.
- 28:35This is a big, big ball game, Dom, for this kid, George Stone, as you mentioned.
- 28:38This is a real showcase for him tonight.
- 28:40This is a real showcase for him tonight.
- 28:41Yep. The two-one pitch, a little high, three and one.
- 28:42Yep. The two-one pitch, a little high, three and one.
- 28:44You know, Phil, now Elliott got hurt, got hit on the wrist.
- 28:46You know, Phil, now Elliott got hurt, got hit on the wrist.
- 28:48Yep.
- 28:49But I mean, he came right back.
- 28:50Yep.
- 28:50Came right back. He could have stayed out.
- 28:51But I mean, he came right back.
- 28:52Came right back. He could have stayed out.
- 28:52They expected him to be out for about three to four days.
- 28:54They expected him to be out for about three to four days.
- 28:55Came right back the next day.
- 28:57Came right back the next day.
- 28:59He comes to play.
- 29:00High ball four and match point.
- 29:02He comes to play. High ball four and Maddox is on.
- 29:09And that'll bring up Bobby Bonds.
- 29:13Bobby drove in the winning run in that game last night against the California Angels with a long sacrifice fly.
- 29:23Bobby batting just 2-11, but leading the Yankees in runs batted in
- 29:29with 20.
- 29:31Berman Munson has 19.
- 29:35He's going to be all right, Phil, I'm telling you.
- 29:37I know you've been telling me that, Dom, and I appreciate it because I like to be comforted.
- 29:43The pitch to Bonds, swing and a miss, strike one.
- 29:46And you know, Phil, I was going through the, the guy, the baseball guy, Reggie Jackson now.
- 29:51Not a bad hitter, led the league in strikeouts for four straight seasons.
- 29:55Right. I think he's got the record.
- 29:57Yeah. 171 is it? It's a lot of lifts.
- 30:02Stone sets, Maddox leads away.
- 30:04The pitch to Bonds change up inside one-on-one.
- 30:17Melno holding the bag.
- 30:21Ground ball is short. Perfect double play ball.
- 30:23Phillips to Mian back to first. Oh no. I forgot about the speed of Bobby Bonds.
- 30:30Man, can he fly? He really takes off.
- 30:34And that made the difference and Bobby on it first.
- 30:38I tell you, I said perfect double play ball.
- 30:40And if there ever was one, that was it. He hit a bullet one hopper to the shortstop.
- 30:44Mike Phillips, who got rid of the ball and Mian, a great pivot man, got rid of it in a hurry.
- 30:49But Bonds easily beat his throw to first.
- 30:51And it brings up Chris Chambliss.
- 30:54Two out, Bonds at first.
- 30:58Curve is a little high, ball one.
- 31:02Chambliss hitting 272 on the air.
- 31:07That's six doubles and a triple. No homers.
- 31:11Two men are out. No score.
- 31:16A fly ball to center field. Moving back is Dellanser. He's there.
- 31:20And has it.
- 31:22For the Yankees, no runs, no hits, no errors. A man left.
- 31:26And in the middle of the first, the Yankees, nothing in the Mets coming to bat.
- 31:39For some, only greatness is good enough.
- 31:42They dream bigger, set their sights higher, and work a lot harder.
- 31:46The brewers of Schaeffer beer have worked their dreams since 1842.
- 31:50Perfecting a beer with a rare quality of flavor that never fades.
- 31:55Schaeffer is the one. One beer to have when you're having more than one. More than one.
- 32:04Schaeffer pleasure does evade even when your thirst is done.
- 32:11Today among America's great premium lagers, the one that came first is still the one.
- 32:18The one that always delivers. The one that comes through glass after glass.
- 32:23Schaeffer is the one. One beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 32:35A reminder, the very exciting Oakland A's will be here tomorrow night for a three-game weekend series.
- 32:41And, Bill Rizzotto, the A's look as tough as ever, don't they?
- 32:46Same kind of a ball club, Don. That's won them three consecutive world championships.
- 32:50They don't scare you, but all of a sudden somebody hits a long ball and suddenly you're behind.
- 32:57Now you mentioned you brought out a good point.
- 33:00You look at their team batting average, they're next to last in the league last year in the American League West.
- 33:06Right. 247. Unbelievable.
- 33:09They've played together so long, they get that clutch base hit, the big stolen base.
- 33:15And I tell the team you're going to be excited about when they come to Yankee Stadium.
- 33:20The fans should too. California Angels.
- 33:29All right, Mike Phillips, youngster acquired from San Francisco.
- 33:32Ground ball, nice play by Chambliss. Picks it up and throws it over the head of Wallace.
- 33:38Wallace was late covering. What a play by Chambliss.
- 33:41He tried to lead Wallace, but threw it over his head. That'll be a base hit.
- 33:46The first pitch thrown by Mike Wallace.
- 33:48And Chambliss dove to his right, got his glove on and knocked it down. They almost got him.
- 33:55So as Don, you mentioned this might be an exhibition game in that play and that way.
- 33:59They sure are. You got to put a big star next to that one, Bill.
- 34:03We'll have to put him in contention.
- 34:05You can't quite do it because they didn't make the play.
- 34:07Right, right.
- 34:11By Felix Mian. Tough little man with that bat. He chokes up to the trademark.
- 34:17A lot like Jerry Coleman did.
- 34:25Chris Chambliss holds the bag against Mike Phillips.
- 34:29Pitch by Wallace is right down the middle. Strike call.
- 34:33Felix Mian batting 233.
- 34:38As they double to triple in a homer on the air.
- 34:42Excellent hit and run man. Good butter.
- 34:45Little Walt Williams even with the bag at third.
- 34:47Phillips leads away.
- 34:49Pitch by Wallace is foul on the left of the plate. Strike two.
- 34:53Remember Walt Williams telling us Don that he broke in as a third baseman?
- 34:58You had asked him what position he thought he was most comfortable at.
- 35:03I remember that and he says third baseman.
- 35:05That's what I broke in on.
- 35:06So we're getting a chance to see him.
- 35:08There's no doubt he's got the quickness.
- 35:12Chambliss holds the bag against Phillips.
- 35:18On deck, Dill Hunter. Wallace to the belt.
- 35:22The kick and the pitch fouled off the plate bounced up and hit me on the arm.
- 35:27You know what always intrigues me is when a punch hitter like Mian that doesn't hit the long ball.
- 35:36The outfield seems to be close.
- 35:38The infield seems to be back and you wonder how he's going to get the ball in there for a hit.
- 35:43That's right. It's very difficult.
- 35:44But when you're hitting the ball hard and he's got to hit the ball solid with a little bit of bat he's got left after choking way up.
- 35:51Pitch. Ground ball a second. Perfect double play.
- 35:55Stanley steps on the big off but throw to first not in time.
- 35:59Stanley delayed that fraction of a second by not flipping to Mason and it allowed me on to beat his throw to first base.
- 36:07Stanley was not as close to second as he thought.
- 36:11So.
- 36:13Of course the second base Mike Phillips safe on the field is choice Felix Mian.
- 36:19And now Dill Hunter.
- 36:21Bill the standard to go by if you can you try to throw rather than take it up.
- 36:28The only time if the shortstop coming and moving towards the bed.
- 36:32But that time Stanley was moving away from the play and then had to throw back.
- 36:37Hunter takes a pitch high ball one.
- 36:41But Stanley has been playing shortstop and doing a great job. He made some outstanding plays in Oakland and in California.
- 36:52Whenever you move from the left side of the infield or the right side of the infield becomes strange throw to first base almost a balk but he got away with it.
- 37:02You're looking at the ball coming at you from a different angle and it moves differently.
- 37:11Left hander Mike Wallace sets.
- 37:15Pitches bounce the first Chambliss goes to Mason one back to first base.
- 37:19Safe at first base.
- 37:21Again they just missed the double play.
- 37:24Good play from Chambliss to Mason and Mason's return throw right on the money but Hunter beat the throw.
- 37:31So they're a two away and the batter now rusty star.
- 37:47Pretty good credentials there Dominic. 23 hits and 21 runs batted in.
- 37:52He can swing that bat.
- 37:54Strike one. What is it they used to call him in Montreal La Grande.
- 38:02Yeah right right. That was it.
- 38:04Supposed to be redhead.
- 38:09He was a big favorite has always been a big favorite wherever he's played. Pitch the stop line drive.
- 38:15Base hit the right set up and going to third on some maddox's throw.
- 38:24And just a great tag by little William.
- 38:27Did you see that quick tag. Beautiful. What a throw all the way around.
- 38:32Just a fantastic play.
- 38:38Well the score at the end of one the Yankees nothing in the midst nothing. Turned mealtime at a polio time with creamy smooth polio ricotta and easy to slice quick to mouth polio mozzarella.
- 38:50They've been New York's favorite for over 75 years but you've only just begun to know polio because now you can liven up your favorite pizza or antipasto with polio pepperoni.
- 39:00Polio anchovies polio mushrooms as well as polio sweet slice red and green peppers or how about adding polio black olives to that any pasto or to that special toss green salad served with warm Italian bread and creamy polio butter.
- 39:15Now more than ever polio has all you need to put real Italian food on your table.
- 39:23Well you live in line. I knew AMCO does millions of American cars but I never knew they worked on foreign cars too. If I only owned a Toyota.
- 39:34You're going to be surprised but don't be surprised by the nice little extras at AMCO.
- 39:39They've service 4 million transmissions. They do things right. AMCO double A. MCO.
- 39:47If you have or suspect transmission trouble take your car to one of the AMCO transmission centers in the greater New York area.
- 39:54They're famous 19 point multi check is free. They do things right.
- 40:07And we'll pick that up in a moment. I don't want to sound too brilliant but as soon as he turns around Bill we'll get it.
- 40:17Number 12. Well right now we find out who number 12 is. You got a scorecard doctor.
- 40:24We're really getting down to the basics. It is Jack Heidemann.
- 40:30Now Heidemann normally a shortstop and this way the managers both Yogi Berra and Bill Verdon get a chance to see what they shortstop can do playing second.
- 40:41Little Walt Williams about it. The pitch is low ball one.
- 40:46Walt Williams batting 450 already got nine hits all last year he had but six.
- 40:54Stone's pitch is high ball to do nothing. No score top of the second the Yankees in the Mets the mayor's trophy game.
- 41:05It'll be Williams Dempsey and Mason.
- 41:13Stone's pitch is low ball three Williams taking all the way.
- 41:27They play wall straight away in the outfield. 3 0 pitch ball for Williams is on second walk given up by Stone.
- 41:36And I guess that's something you got to expect. He hasn't been out there in so long.
- 41:40You're a little strange. It's got to be hard. It's got to be hard. The pressure is going to be on him too. Oh yes he knows.
- 41:46That's for sure. Here's Rick Dempsey and what a job he's doing batting 667.
- 41:52He's four for six on the end the only two times they got him out he hit the ball right on the nose.
- 41:57Used mostly as a pinch hitter.
- 42:01Pitch to Dempsey is a curve low ball one. Good receiver isn't he Phil? Yes he is.
- 42:07Got a great throwing arm although Munson put on some show against the Angels.
- 42:11Well of course he's great anyway everybody knows it's tough to be in back of an all-star isn't it? Yep.
- 42:18Stone kicks and delivers it's high outside ball two to nothing.
- 42:22Kind of like when you were performing so brilliantly and Yogi Berra and you had Charlie Silvera never got off the bench did he?
- 42:29Well the Yankees had so many catches you had Silvera out, Gus Triandos.
- 42:36Quite a few others that were eventually sold to other teams.
- 42:40The right place at the right time is so true. You gotta be there.
- 42:44So it's two and nothing to Dempsey nobody out in the top of the second has no score.
- 42:53Stone sets his pitch low ball three three and nothing looks like that game is a final now Dom.
- 43:00Milwaukee won it. Yep three to two.
- 43:05Son of a gun they're hanging in there Milwaukee.
- 43:09That's a good young team they're right on top of the American League East.
- 43:13Three and all to count. There's a strike three and one.
- 43:17You mentioned that the curfew had curtailed the game at two two so they. Yep and they called it at the end of 15 and started over tonight.
- 43:26And they play it before their regularly scheduled game.
- 43:32Williams leads away see he's going the pitch to Dempsey line to right field.
- 43:36But right there Rusty Stobb and Williams better get back Stobb fires it in not in time as Walt Williams slides back in the first.
- 43:44Dempsey again hitting the ball right on the nose a line drive at Stobb.
- 43:50One away and Jim Mason.
- 43:53And this might be the spot for Mason that come out of his slump Dom.
- 43:57Bill Burden I think everybody agrees did the right thing he took the pressure off Jim.
- 44:03You know Bill has got a great affinity to the entire situation.
- 44:08I think that was a great move and this will relax Mason a little bit.
- 44:12It'll relax him and also make him like a tiger when he does eventually get back in the starting lineup.
- 44:19Williams at first one out pitch to Mason is outside ball one. You do worry when you're not on that lineup every day.
- 44:28Especially when you got a family as most of the ballplayers have and Jim Mason does.
- 44:34You know you got to feed and clothe those kids.
- 44:39The kick and the pitch bounce to the first base Milner goes to second for one back to first double play.
- 44:47Well executed three six three double play.
- 44:50Nothing across and in the middle of the second inning the Yankees nothing the Mets nothing.
- 44:57On July 1st 1974 after years of selling only one kind of gasoline premium the Getty Oil Company introduced a new gasoline.
- 45:09Getty No Lead the kind of gasoline most 1971 through 1974 cars can run on and most 1975 cars have to run on.
- 45:19Like most oil companies we at Getty expected our No Lead to account for only five to ten percent of our sales.
- 45:27But we had a surprise we're selling twice as much Getty No Lead as we thought.
- 45:32Maybe it's because getting No Lead is a little bit better than a No Lead has to be.
- 45:37So it gave people the kind of performance they wanted and they gave us their business.
- 45:43Remember don't waste gasoline but when you do drive fill up with Getty premium or No Lead.
- 45:51Getty we've got what's best for your car.
- 46:04Let's pause 15 seconds for a station notification this is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 46:13This is WMCA New York the sex information service is open right now call them for advice at 586-6666.
- 46:25John Milner leads it off for the Mets in the bottom of the second.
- 46:29Wallace's pitch swing and a miss strike one he tried to check it couldn't do it.
- 46:33Milner hitting 217 now he has four doubles three homers and eleven runs batted in.
- 46:40Milner starved Kingman and Joe Torre's got to supply the power for this club that pitches inside.
- 46:48One on one.
- 46:55Milner's strong left hand batter holds those arms well away from the body swings and misses strike two good slider by Mike Wallace.
- 47:06Fred Stanley is about two steps back on the outfield grass at second base and the outfield around towards right and deep.
- 47:16Talk about manchelons look at Maddox out there.
- 47:19Cut his legs crossed now he's ready though and it's outside two and two.
- 47:25Boy has he developed and developed he's really an excellent son of unbelievable.
- 47:30All players have different ways of relaxing just before the pitch and it's interesting to watch them.
- 47:36Line drive base hit to right field between first and second Bobby Vines up with it.
- 47:42That's the third base hit for the Mets but in the first inning great throw by Maddox and a beautiful tag by Walt Williams nipping Dell answer at third snuffed out a rally.
- 47:55And now Wayne Garrett.
- 47:58Garrett hitting 275 a double a triple a homer and four runs batted in.
- 48:05Pitch to Garrett bounce a foul outside of first.
- 48:10Eddie O's coaches at third for Yogi Berra's Mets and at first base Roy McMillan.
- 48:25Nobody out no score.
- 48:29Wallace kicks delivers line drive base hit the run all bonds and he's got an easy double play.
- 48:35Holy cow Bobby Bonds got a shoestringer and another ball hit like a bullet and Milner and I thought it was a base hit.
- 48:44But Dominic Valentino didn't tell him down that when bonds is out there you notice how easy he made that look.
- 48:50I'm going to sound like his agent but I just think he's such a great athlete with that great speed.
- 48:56You notice the throw right on the money right after the catch.
- 49:00I'm going to have to hold up more.
- 49:01I couldn't believe he gets an apple just like the other night I didn't think North was going to make that catch in center field.
- 49:08All right. His big Dave Kingman and the Mets have been rocking that ball the first pitch is a strike.
- 49:18Kingman batting 200 but he has four doubles five homers and 11 runs batted in.
- 49:28Inside one of my got some high priced help with this lay treatment.
- 49:34I'm going to water and coffee dumb.
- 49:37Oh you know there's nothing like it.
- 49:39You bring your own water and coffee man.
- 49:43The one one pitch big curve.
- 49:45Oh and Kingman almost fell right into that breaking pitch.
- 49:51Kingman definitely a guest hitter and when he guesses right he can lose that baseball.
- 49:56He's leaning into the pitch as he holds the bat straight up and down and takes a strike on the inside corner.
- 50:03Two balls two strikes two out no score.
- 50:09They don't think that Dave will pull the ball do they.
- 50:13And if he better pull the ball or he'll really cross him up the way they pulled around in field and outfield swing and a man like three.
- 50:23No runs a base hit nowhere has nobody left at the end of two hits the Yankees nothing in the Mets nothing.
- 50:30Well it's a great game.
- 50:32Take the candy bar out of your mouth Frank no one can understand you.
- 50:35Yeah but it's so good. It's a baby Ruth bar.
- 50:37Well sure it's good but don't talk with your mouth full.
- 50:40Hey Phil that's why I love baby Ruth's.
- 50:42They're full of peanuts and fudge and chewy caramel with a sweet chocolatey coating. Great taste.
- 50:47I know but you still can't talk while you're eating.
- 50:50Okay you do the talking I'll finish my baby Ruth.

- 51:47So if you're a Flushing High School grad call Flushing High School for more information.
- 51:53Bill.
- 52:02All right Fred Stanley will lead it off and we see on deck Herman Munson who will bat for Mike Wallace.
- 52:07Remember we're playing National League rules tonight.
- 52:10No designated hitter for the Yankees.
- 52:13I'm surprised that Yogi pitches high ball when he wouldn't allow that.
- 52:17He wouldn't.
- 52:18I get Yogi Lee.
- 52:21Remember Mrs. Goldberg used to call Yogi that.
- 52:23You don't remember Mrs. Go.
- 52:25You're too young Dominic.
- 52:27Cora doesn't remember me though.
- 52:28No but I do.
- 52:30I fly to right field rusty stop moving back pounds the glove and makes the catch for the first out.
- 52:38And now Thurman Munson.
- 52:49What a year he's having batting three ninety one forty three hits two doubles a triple to home is 19 runs batted in.
- 53:01Not a bad season for Thurman.
- 53:03He's been hitting that ball.
- 53:05And again I keep thinking back to early in the year when I did that interview and he said I hope I can get a good start like 25 games and he's doing it.
- 53:12He's gone by the 25 games and New York has a change of mind.
- 53:17Wow.
- 53:18Down to third base line.
- 53:20How many down for Munson now he's at 28 games.
- 53:25Continue the pace.
- 53:26OK.
- 53:29Everything Thurman hits on the nose outside it's one of mine.
- 53:35No score top of the third inning.
- 53:41And gave me that one score Milwaukee beat Texas three to two.
- 53:47That's outside two balls in a strike Kansas City nothing the Red Sox nothing with Boston batting in the bottom of the fourth.
- 53:54The Cubs beat Houston for to two and what a year they're having for Jim Marshall Atlanta to Montreal nothing in the top of the third and Philadelphia beat Cincinnati six three change up hit down the third base line but foul.
- 54:09You know they had big headlines that came over the ticket tape about Richie Allen getting a hit his first time up and three standing ovation.
- 54:16Yep that was great and he might have done something in the bottom of the ninth because they were losing three to in the bottom of the ninth looks like somebody hit a grand slammer.
- 54:24Could it have been Richie Allen.
- 54:26I'll see why not.
- 54:29The two to pitch struck him out much and went for a bad pitch.
- 54:34Those stone picks up his second strike out and the batter Roy White who struck out his first time up.
- 54:51Stone wines and the pitch is low and outside ball.
- 55:04I've put you a little bit outside to nothing.
- 55:16George Stone kicks delivers it's on the outside corner.
- 55:21Two balls in a strike.
- 55:31Two out nobody on change up hit to second base nice big hop to hide him in over to first and the Yankees are retired in order.
- 55:46Those hills and lakes and should talk.
- 56:01There he doesn't need to do.

- 57:34no score in the ballgame as we go to the bottom half of the third inning and
- 57:38coming on to pitch now for the Yankees is Ken Clay he went to spring training
- 57:43with the Yankees this year he appeared in three games with a 1-0 record and
- 57:47pitched six innings allowed six hits and only one earned run Ken Clay on a bound
- 57:54Wallace went to innings for the Yanks no runs allowed three hits struck out one
- 57:59and he didn't walk any batters and leading up will be John Sterns for the
- 58:06New York Mets nothing to nothing in the bottom half of the third inning the
- 58:10Yankees battling the Mets in the 13th annual Mayor's Trophy game John Sterns
- 58:18outstanding athlete out of Colorado the pitch to Sterns is a call strike the
- 58:24outfield is straight away and deep for Sterns we're in the bottom half of the
- 58:29third inning nothing to nothing into the windup is Ken Clay the pitch breaking
- 58:33pitch grounded a short Mason on the second hop throws him out one man up and
- 58:38one man down and the bottom half of the third inning Sterns was up for his first
- 58:44time coming into the game and the regular season hitting at 2 17 and George
- 58:50Stone who has pitched extremely well for the Mets steps in on deck is Mike
- 58:57Phillips stone bats as he pitches left-handed the outfield is at medium
- 59:04depth they play a stone straight away Walt Williams now wide a third comes in
- 59:10a little bit on the edge of the grass on the mound is Ken Clay for the Yankees
- 59:15Wallace starter for the Yanks pitch to winning the pitch to Stone fouled off in
- 59:20the stands and back of the dugout on third base and tonight for the only game
- 59:25of the season the Yankees dugout they of course said during the regular season
- 59:30are at first base as are the Mets the pitch and stone takes it high and outside
- 59:35for ball one down is evened up at a ball and a strike Milwaukee has defeated
- 59:43Texas 3 to 2 the pitch is high ball to no score in Boston at Fenway Park
- 59:50between Kansas City and the Red Sox on the mound is Ken Clay on deck is Mike
- 59:57Phillips the pitch is fouled off and the stands out of play I'll forget that
- 1:00:04tomorrow night it'll be the Yankees and the Oakland A's
- 1:00:14stone a left-handed hitter
- 1:00:18digs in on the mound Ken Clay the one-two pitch and it is high ball to two balls
- 1:00:24two balls two strikes the Yanks and the Mets the 13th annual Mears Trophy game
- 1:00:30the 2-2 pitch by clay stone swings and misses and that is the first strike out
- 1:00:35of the ball game for clay two men down in the bottom half of the third inning
- 1:00:45and sitting in now with us all tanned up back from that trip to Florida is Frank
- 1:00:55Messick good evening Frank good evening Don and hi everybody wherever you might
- 1:00:59be listening to New York Yankee baseball and it sure is good to be back believe
- 1:01:02me the pitch to Mike Phillips is high and outside for a ball I tell you really
- 1:01:08did get a good 10 I got that fishing in Chesapeake Bay yesterday the pitch is a
- 1:01:13call strike knee-high fastball that picked up the inside corner counts even
- 1:01:18up with a ball and a strike on Mike Phillips Felix me on his on deck
- 1:01:22nothing nothing there's trophy game bottom of the third the pitch is lying
- 1:01:26to right center field Maddox going back gets in front of it and then has to pick
- 1:01:31it off his shoe tops and he does a great catch by Elliott Maddox and the best of
- 1:01:36retired in order and the bottom half of the third inning with no runs no hits
- 1:01:42no errors nobody left on base at the end of three full innings of play it is
- 1:01:46nothing another

- 1:02:53well Dom I'm back and glad to be back and I know the Yankees are glad to be back
- 1:02:56at Shea Stadium and they'll open a series tomorrow night here with the Oakland
- 1:03:00A's come on I don't forget all you folks in Greenwich Connecticut that is your
- 1:03:04night when the Yankees play the Oakland A's and let's see Pat Dobson will go
- 1:03:10against by the blue you know I was sort of hoping the Yankees might miss by the
- 1:03:15blue in that three game series but he's gonna open it up what he won seven and
- 1:03:19lost one I think seven and one he is tough another great athlete out of
- 1:03:25Southern University you know you don't hear too much about Southern University
- 1:03:28but they produce some real fine athletes and Frank how many times does it happen
- 1:03:33the great play in the field and the guy comes up to hit first like Elliot Maddox
- 1:03:37it happens very very often Dom and don't ask me why but I know it does
- 1:03:41Stone's pitch to Maddox is high for a ball one ball and no strikes Elliot
- 1:03:46walked his first trip up and Elliot came into the game hitting a 339 during the
- 1:03:51regular season for the Yankees outfield straight away and deep Stone's pitch a
- 1:03:55squibbler off the end of the bat in a right field for a base that Elliot took
- 1:03:59a big healthy cut and it hit the end of the bat and went in a right field for a
- 1:04:04base hit and you take those don't you yes you certainly do and that one fooled
- 1:04:08John Miller I thought Miller could make a play on the ball it wasn't hard hit I
- 1:04:13think he thought it was hit harder than it was and instead of breaking for the
- 1:04:16ball he broke toward the bag and he could have had a play on it and I might
- 1:04:21add that is the first hit of the ball game for the Yankees the batter is Bobby
- 1:04:27Bonds reached on a fielder's choice of a first inning so he has nothing for one
- 1:04:32the outfield for Bobby is straight away and deep Maddox with a lead at first
- 1:04:36Milder holding the pitches outside for a ball one ball and no strikes on deck is
- 1:04:42Chris Chambliss we're in the fourth inning of the annual Mayors Trophy game
- 1:04:47this is number 13 each team is 1-6 stone to the belt the pitch is low two balls
- 1:04:55and no strikes Chris Chambliss on deck the Yankees and the Oakland A's
- 1:05:00tomorrow night here at the stadium
- 1:05:05looking in is stone George stone to the belt Maddox with a lead around goes the
- 1:05:10left arm the pitch is high ball three Oh Frank have you had a chance to get your
- 1:05:18lovely wife Jenny settle down and are you still looking for the house we're
- 1:05:23pretty well settled right now we're going to we don't have a house or an
- 1:05:27apartment yet but obviously I feel that some kind folks over there in New Jersey
- 1:05:31are going to come up with one for us Frank Messer fans I'll come up with it
- 1:05:36the pitch is lined in the gap left center field and it's put the outfielders and
- 1:05:40goes to the wall cut off by Kingman Maddox on the third and in the second
- 1:05:45base with a stand-up double is Bobby Vines and bonds really tattooed that
- 1:05:50pitch a screamer the left center he really did he got it in between the left
- 1:05:55fielder Kingman and the center fielder Gene Klein that ball was so hard hit it
- 1:06:00skipped off the wall came back and matters who can fly had to be flagged
- 1:06:04out of third base by Dick Halton so the Yankees present the first scoring threat
- 1:06:10in this mayor's trophy game that is the second hit off of George stone in the
- 1:06:16ballgame runners on second and third with nobody out Chris Chambliss the
- 1:06:22left-handed hitter steps in the outfields around the right and deep the
- 1:06:25big gap is down the left field line stone to the belt bonds and Maddox with
- 1:06:30a lead the pitch grounded to second base the throw on to first base for the out
- 1:06:36but Elliott Maddox scores and Bobby Vines goes on to third base Jack
- 1:06:41Heideman making the play on to a builder and there is one man down
- 1:06:50so the Yankees lead the ballgame one to nothing
- 1:06:55Walt Williams is the hitter well tonight walked in the second inning he is
- 1:07:04officially yet to come to the plate hitting 450 on the season outfield
- 1:07:10straight away and deep bonds is a third base one out stone to the belt the pitch
- 1:07:14to Williams I for a ball on deck for the Yankees Rick Dempsey I forget now the
- 1:07:21big three game weekend series between the Yankees and the Oakland A's to be
- 1:07:27followed by the Kansas City Royals the big gap for Williams is left center
- 1:07:32field stone to the belt the 1-0 pitch Walt takes it outside and low for a ball
- 1:07:37two balls and no strikes on Walt Williams Rick Dempsey is on deck for the
- 1:07:44Yankees are in the top half of the fourth inning the Yanks are leading in
- 1:07:48the ballgame one to nothing on two hits the pitch to Williams is grounded foul
- 1:07:53in fact two balls and one strike of Frank first look at Oakland as you and I
- 1:08:00both didn't get out to the west coast but there is devastating as ever yes they
- 1:08:04certainly are with a Reggie Jackson's bat he always hits well here in New York
- 1:08:08by the blue seven and one record pitching tomorrow that's going to be a
- 1:08:11great ballgame the two one pitch Williams started after it and knew better
- 1:08:15and let it go for ball three three balls and a strike Rick Dempsey is on deck
- 1:08:22outstanding center fielder Bill North can't be camping ours the shortstop Sal
- 1:08:26Bando their captain and third baseman oh boy I don't know Bill Rudy Jean tennis
- 1:08:32quite a lineup go on and on can't you?
- 1:08:35Walt Williams waiting for the three one pitch from George Stone stone to the
- 1:08:39belt bonds with a lead at third the Yanks lead one nothing the pitch is hit
- 1:08:43high in the air the deep left field going back is Kingman and this will score
- 1:08:48bonds easily and Bobby just trots in so it's a sacrifice fly for little Walt
- 1:08:54Williams who put some good wood to that he really did that ball was it just a
- 1:08:58little bit too much towards center field to carry over the wall he just missed
- 1:09:03that the jet stream alley as we refer to it out there it goes for those of you
- 1:09:07familiar with Shea Stadium just about from the foul pole and left field just
- 1:09:11past the dugout fast you got a ball up in the air fairly well hit in that area
- 1:09:15and unless the wind is blowing the other way pretty hard it'll carry out of here
- 1:09:19Rick Dempsey the hitter the pitch is grounded wide a third over to his left
- 1:09:23is Garrett the throw the first for the out and the Yankees are retired and the
- 1:09:27top of the fourth inning but not before they pick up two runs the Yankees had
- 1:09:32two hits nobody was left no errors by the best at the end of three and a half
- 1:09:37the Yankees lead it to another
- 1:09:48when you are the one you are the one to count on since 1842 Schaeffer has always
- 1:09:53been the one to count on Schaeffer has the rare quality of flavor that never
- 1:09:58fades glass after glass Schaeffer is the one that always delivers today among
- 1:10:22America's great premium lagers the one that came first is still the one Schaeffer
- 1:10:28the one that comes through beer after beer
- 1:10:45well we've got some changes now for the Yankees Dom I see Walt Williams has gone
- 1:10:49to play center field and coming into play third base Bob Oliver and out in
- 1:10:55right field Ron Bloomberg so you're outfield now it's Penelope and left
- 1:10:58Williams in center Bloomberg and right the infield has Bob Oliver at third
- 1:11:03Mason at short Stanley at second and Chambliss at first as they were
- 1:11:07Dempsey still catching and Bob Johnson the big right hander on the mound
- 1:11:12Jack Heidemann leads it off for the New York Mets in the bottom half of the
- 1:11:18counter that takes a bad hop and goes over Jim Mason's head into left center
- 1:11:23field a bad hop that will go no doubt as a base hit for Heidemann and the Mets
- 1:11:32will have the leadoff hitter on
- 1:11:38as Frank gave me a now Walt Williams is in center field Bob Oliver is over at
- 1:11:44third base and Ron Bloomberg is in right
- 1:11:49the Yankees leading in the ballgame two to nothing
- 1:11:53Jean Klein's is the hitter
- 1:11:56Heidemann leads off first the pitch declines as high for a ball Bob Johnson
- 1:12:02on the mound for the Yankees he split last season between the
- 1:12:06Cleveland Indians and Spokane of the Pacific Coast League released by the
- 1:12:10Texas Rangers this spring and picked up by the Yankees one ball no strike and
- 1:12:15Johnson throws on to first base ironically enough Bob Johnson once was a
- 1:12:20Mets he was in that trade with Amos Otis for Joe Foy that trade with Kansas
- 1:12:26City some years ago the pitch is popped up in foul ground Chris Chambliss is
- 1:12:32under it outside of first base and makes the catch and there's one man down
- 1:12:44Rusty's got the hitter Rusty's single the right field back of the first inning
- 1:12:48hitting 303 during the regular season and it looks like Rusty's right back on
- 1:12:53the beam hitting the ball well yes he is having a ball well and managing to stay
- 1:12:57healthy so far
- 1:13:00Bob Johnson on the mound the infield for the Yankees with one out set up for the
- 1:13:05double play wide at third base is Bob Oliver the outfield is around to right
- 1:13:10and deep the pitch stop lines when the right Bloomberg makes a one handed catch
- 1:13:16practically hit right Adam and there's two men down but I'll tell you Rusty
- 1:13:21really hit it and Ronnie made it look like Bobby Bonds yes he did Ronnie cut
- 1:13:26the pie a little bit on now and he has read all the things that have been
- 1:13:29written and I guess said to about his fielding I think he cut the pie a little
- 1:13:33bit there hard line drive and he won him the hitter is John Miller the first
- 1:13:40baseman who's single the right back in the second inning hitting 217 on the
- 1:13:45season the pitch is a call strike breaking pitch by Bob Johnson that broke
- 1:13:49over nicely and with the double play possibility with two outs eliminated the
- 1:13:55infield is back however the outfield is around a right and deep item and leads
- 1:13:59our first Chambliss not holding the pitches in the dirt blocked nicely by
- 1:14:03Rick Dempsey the big gap is down that left field line for the hitter John
- 1:14:09Miller on deck is Dave Kingman the Yankees lead it to nothing or the bottom
- 1:14:15of the fourth Bob Johnson goes to the belt Adam and with a lead at first the
- 1:14:22pitch by Johnson is too close spun away from that look like it might almost hit
- 1:14:27him two balls and a strike you know watching Bob Johnson this is the first
- 1:14:34time I've seen him with a man on but it looks like he's picked up that Louis
- 1:14:37Teod type of stretch he comes down and look at that see him set about three
- 1:14:41times the pitch is popped up in short stop area Mason under it and he makes
- 1:14:48the grab for the out and the Mets are retired at the bottom of the fourth with
- 1:14:53no runs there was one hit no errors a runner left at the end of four bullies
- 1:14:58to play the Yankees have two runs two hits no errors the Mets no runs four

- 1:16:36Jesus Alou has got a right field for rusty stop he'll bat and stop place
- 1:16:40fourth in the order the pitchers outside for a ball to Jim Mason Mason up for his
- 1:16:46second time hit into a double playback of a second inning stone still in the
- 1:16:50mound for the match the pitchers grounded down the first base line fair
- 1:16:54ball Bobble picked up Joe to start us in time Miller recovered just in time on a
- 1:17:00close play let's pause 15 seconds for a station identification this is the New
- 1:17:04York Yankee baseball at work this is WMCA New York hello there everybody this is
- 1:17:10Mel Allen if your air freight company takes your small packages lightly call
- 1:17:16Emory the shortest distance between two points
- 1:17:20Fred Stanley steps in the batter's box the pitch to Stanley is down low for a
- 1:17:26ball one ball and no strikes George stone on the mound for the Mets he's been
- 1:17:32there from the opening pitch the pitch by stone is fouled off and back the
- 1:17:36count has evened up at a ball in a strike Stanley fly the right field back
- 1:17:41in the third inning so he is nothing but a ball and a strike and a strike
- 1:17:46the right field back in the third inning so he is nothing for one the outfield
- 1:17:52plays Stanley to hit the right a little over towards the line and right the
- 1:17:57center fielder climbs in right center big gap left center field the pitchers
- 1:18:01hit high and deep to left field back goes Kingman to the warning track and
- 1:18:05makes the catch and there's two men down
- 1:18:09the Yankees leading in the ballgame two to nothing here on the top half of the
- 1:18:16fifth inning with the two men down Bob Johnson the batter he's up for his
- 1:18:23first time and although he throws right he hits left so he'll be hitting left
- 1:18:31against the left-handed pitching of George Stone the pitch by stone and
- 1:18:37Johnson swings and hits a blooper to center field coming on fast and one
- 1:18:42handed shoestring catch by Gene Klein and the Yankees are retired with no
- 1:18:48runs no hits nobody left on base no errors by the Mets at the end of four
- 1:18:52and a half the Yankees lead it two to nothing
- 1:18:56you are the one you are the one to count on since 1842 Schaeffer has always been
- 1:19:10the one to count on Schaeffer has the rare quality of flavor that never fades
- 1:19:15glass after glass Schaeffer is the one that always delivers
- 1:19:37today among America's great premium lagers the one that came first is still
- 1:19:43the one Schaeffer the one that comes through here after beer
- 1:19:50is the one when you're having more than one
- 1:20:10that's vacation last
- 1:20:13you
- 1:20:19okay Garrett thank you Frank Wayne Garrett leads it off for the Mets on the
- 1:20:23bottom of the bed Bob Johnson under the line up the pitch is high for a ball one
- 1:20:27ball and no strikes the outfield for Garrett around the right and back deep
- 1:20:32Walt Williams replacing Elliott Maddox and right center Johnson's delivery is
- 1:20:38on the outside corner for a call strike can't even dump in a ball in a strike
- 1:20:43the big gap for Garrett down the left field line and left center field
- 1:20:47leading to nothing pictures line foul down that first base line one ball and
- 1:20:54two strikes why did third base is Bob Oliver Mason the shortstop over towards
- 1:21:02the bag Fred Stanley is in the hole on the right side of the infield
- 1:21:09Eddie O's coaching at third Roy McMillan at first the pitch is way outside look
- 1:21:14like it got away from Bob Johnson counts evened up at two balls and two strikes
- 1:21:22Bill White with the night off tonight and Bill will be back with Frank and Phil
- 1:21:26tomorrow night Yanks and the a the pitch high ball three three balls and two
- 1:21:32strikes the Wayne Garrett Bob Johnson replacing Mike Wallace who started the
- 1:21:38ballgame and fits the first two innings of the game gave up three hits no runs
- 1:21:42the pitch Garrett fouls it off and back three balls and two strikes on Wayne
- 1:21:48Garrett and you were mentioning Frank before we get a runner on about Johnson
- 1:21:54possibly trying to emulate that Tia that wouldn't be all bad with it I don't know
- 1:21:59it wouldn't be out there fools a lot of people that way the pitchers hit high and
- 1:22:05deep to right it is a foul ball man he got a run on that one and really peppered
- 1:22:11it I don't know whether Johnson picked that up for Tia or whether that is just
- 1:22:16his natural deal of course it's his natural delivery or he couldn't get by
- 1:22:21with it would be a ball the three to pitch Garrett grounds one wide a first
- 1:22:28taken by Chambliss who wins the race to the bag and there's one man up and one
- 1:22:33man down and the bottom half of the fifth inning
- 1:22:40Dave Kingman the hitter for the Mets he went down swinging in the second inning
- 1:22:45so he is 0 for 1 tonight Dave has five home runs 11 RBI's during the regular
- 1:22:52season heading at 200 the outfields around the left and deep the pitch to
- 1:22:57Kingman swung out of it he took a tremendous cut he is big and strong he
- 1:23:05was a great athlete at Southern California the pitchers outside that's
- 1:23:11evened up at a ball in the strike he's an imposing sight isn't he as they say
- 1:23:16yes he is what is he about 6 6 to 20 somewhere in that neighborhood yeah he's
- 1:23:20not small Frank the 1 1 pitch to Kingman and Dave Kingman takes a breaking pitch
- 1:23:26too close for ball to I mean you're about 6 3 and he's he's a he's a big man
- 1:23:32yes he is do nothing the Yankees lead it we're on the bottom of the fifth the
- 1:23:38pitch to Kingman and Kingman swings and misses as Johnson with a beautiful
- 1:23:43change of speed pitch pull a string on him Kingman gave her the big cut and
- 1:23:47didn't get it and the count is evened up 2 and 2 and of course if you get it up
- 1:23:53at his wheelhouse he's going to put it out of here he's big and strong
- 1:24:00Dave had all of his clothes stolen out of his car is that right I hope the guy
- 1:24:05that took him is thick enough the pitch is swung on a miss and for the second
- 1:24:11straight time Dave Kingman goes down swinging I hope the guy that took him is
- 1:24:14not big enough and can't use him and to make it worse
- 1:24:23John Stearns is the batter John is the catcher tonight had a chance to meet
- 1:24:28John he is an excellent athlete out of Colorado it was all big-Age safety
- 1:24:33drafted by the Buffalo Bills in a late round pitch is too close for a ball and
- 1:24:38he was involved in that tug McGraw trade the outfield is straight away and deep
- 1:24:45for John Stern the pitch by Johnson is outside and low ball to 2 and 0
- 1:24:51two meter down we're the bottom of the fifth the Yankees lead it to another
- 1:24:55both runs coming in the top of the board the pitch to Stearns is grounded a short
- 1:24:59Mason on the short hop fires on a first he's got him and the Mets are retired in
- 1:25:04order and the bottom of the fifth with no runs no hits nor is nobody left on base
- 1:25:08at the end of five full innings of play the Yankees lead it to another turn
- 1:25:13meal time at the polio time with creamy smooth polio recorder and easy to slice
- 1:25:19quick to melt polio mozzarella they've been New York's favorites for over 75

- 1:26:27won that suspended game of last night beating Texas 3 to 2 they play 17
- 1:26:32innings I believe last night got caught by curfew then Texas he turned around
- 1:26:38and now check that Texas and Milwaukee will now play the regular game so the
- 1:26:44suspended game went to Milwaukee 3 to 2 Kansas City and Boston still scoreless
- 1:26:50there on the bottom half of the fifth inning at Fenway Park in the National
- 1:26:54League it was the Cubs over Houston this afternoon for to do Atlanta and
- 1:26:58Montreal delayed by rain with Atlanta leading 4-0 and let's see the Phillies
- 1:27:05and Cincinnati playing a doubleheader Philadelphia won the first game six to
- 1:27:09three and the Phillies lead in the nightcap 1 to nothing at the end of two
- 1:27:12and a half innings right here the Yankees are out in front to nothing and
- 1:27:16we go to the sixth loop but I'll lead it off for the Yankees and Frank we had a
- 1:27:20chance to interview Lou before the game for our pregame show he said he's much
- 1:27:25better still not fully recovered from that ear infection but it really did take
- 1:27:29its toll pitches grounded foul that was tough and of course it happened to Lou
- 1:27:34he had to leave a ballgame complaining of dizziness you know you got something
- 1:27:38in that here you can get dizzy because doesn't something in there control the
- 1:27:41equilibrium amen don't ask me to spell it stolen in the wind up the old one
- 1:27:49pitches one on a miss by Lou nothing into on looping out of the Yankees are
- 1:27:55leading in the ballgame to another where the top half of the sixth inning stone
- 1:28:00into the wind up the pitch Panella lines it but it is back at it at the short a
- 1:28:05fine play by a fellow and stepping in now is Ron Bloomberg
- 1:28:17Ronnie up for his first time as was Luke Panella and Ron has been bothered with a
- 1:28:24bad shoulder he is a left-handed hitter with a lot of power stone the left-hander
- 1:28:30pitching against the left hand of the pitches grounded fair ball pass first
- 1:28:34down the right field line now in foul territory Bloomberg around first on his
- 1:28:38way to second he slides and he's got a double and the Yankees with one out at
- 1:28:44Bloomberg on second with Bob Oliver ready to hit and Ron not only hit that one
- 1:28:50hard Frank but he placed it well he certainly did and I think Miller on the
- 1:28:55first base umpire Hank sore got tangled up there for just a second good to see
- 1:29:00Hank sore back on the field dog on it he can still umpire Bob Oliver the hitter
- 1:29:07for the Yankees he is at third base tonight Bob hasn't been up that much two
- 1:29:12hits and 18 at bats and seven ballgames but he's got power hitting at 111 the
- 1:29:18I feel is straight away and deep with one out Bloomberg leads on second stone
- 1:29:24to the belt the pitches swung on a miss Oliver took a great big cut and didn't
- 1:29:28get it the big gap for Bob Oliver is in left center field and down that left
- 1:29:33field line Dick Hauser coaching at third Elston Howard at first Yanks lead it to
- 1:29:39nothing top of the second stone leans in gets the sign goes to the belt around
- 1:29:45goes the left arm the pitch is high for ball one that has evened up at a ball and
- 1:29:50a strike on Bob Oliver the bar tonight the opener of a three game series here at
- 1:29:57Shea Stadium the Yankees and the Oakland A's stone again to the belt the pitch to
- 1:30:02Oliver is a call strike over knee-high one ball two strikes on Bob Oliver on
- 1:30:12deck is Chris Chambliss the first baseman George Stone trying to come back for the
- 1:30:18Mets and he's been fairly effective here tonight he's allowed two runs and three
- 1:30:22hits he goes to the belt the pitch and Oliver pops it up getting under it is
- 1:30:29Wayne Garrett calling for it coming in in fair ground he's got it and there are
- 1:30:33two men out
- 1:30:36Chris Chambliss the first baseman steps in
- 1:30:46first tonight is fly to center field and grounded his second he is over to came
- 1:30:52into the game during the regular season heading at 272 the outfield shades
- 1:30:58Chambliss to right the big gap is left center field and down that left field
- 1:31:02line Ron Bloomberg who doubled down the right field line with one out leads off
- 1:31:08second the pitcher Chambliss grounded foul down the first base line Bloomberg
- 1:31:12has good speed for a big guy he can move we said Ronnie has been bothered with
- 1:31:19that sore shoulder on deck is Walt Williams
- 1:31:25the Yankees leading two to nothing 13th annual mayor's trophy game each team has
- 1:31:31won six games George Stone goes to the belt around goes the left arm the
- 1:31:38pitch is down low outside one ball and one strike
- 1:31:46the Yankees and the New York Mets in the 13th annual mayor's trophy game Mike
- 1:31:53Wallace started for the Yankees pitch the first two innings Bob Johnson in there
- 1:31:57now stone to the belt checks the runner Bloomberg the pitch too close too low
- 1:32:03ball to two and one and after the Oakland A's Frank the Kansas City Royals Texas
- 1:32:10should be quite a halt then yes it will be the Yankees continue their American
- 1:32:14League season play against the Western clubs
- 1:32:19George Stone goes to the belt the pitcher Chambliss is swung on and foul
- 1:32:23into the Mets dugout along the first base line the guy has evened up at two
- 1:32:28balls and two strikes here's the rundown on that suspended game down in Texas it
- 1:32:33went they wound up playing 15 innings Milwaukee winning at 3 to 2 on only four
- 1:32:37hits in 15 innings but they won the ballgame
- 1:32:42stone into the windup for the 2-2 pitch and Chambliss swings and fouls it off in
- 1:32:47back of the Yankee dugout along the third base line into the stands and a
- 1:32:52scramble for that baseball pretty good crowd here tonight Frank 25,000 you think
- 1:32:59you know I'm the one of the worst in the world at estimating a crowd that makes
- 1:33:03two of it that's why I called you in I'm worse than that when it comes to try to
- 1:33:08figure it out stone lanes and to get the sign from his catcher Stern he goes to
- 1:33:14the belt Bloomberg with a leadoff second the 2-2 pitch is fouled again and back
- 1:33:19out of play and the count stays at two balls and two strikes
- 1:33:28old timers day Saturday June 28 here at Shea Stadium that'll be for the men for
- 1:33:36the Yankees that's the Mets the pitch to Chambliss too close three and two full
- 1:33:42count and of course an old timers day is always big
- 1:33:54George Stone goes to the belt Bloomberg with a lead the 3-2 pitch is
- 1:34:00grounded foul down the first base line so Chambliss really hitting at that
- 1:34:05baseball and keeping alive you know talking about old timers games the
- 1:34:09Yankees old timers game will be on Saturday afternoon August the second I'm
- 1:34:14sure we'll see Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Madeline and so many of our old friends
- 1:34:19it's always great old timers day the 3-2 best to Chambliss is grounded through
- 1:34:24the hole in a center field for a base hit around third is Bloomberg and he'll
- 1:34:28come out of score flying bare hands of all but Bloomberg scores and the Yankees
- 1:34:33lead it three to nothing on the single by Chris Chambliss Chambliss now has two
- 1:34:40RBI's tonight
- 1:34:51and of course the scooter he plays in that game too does he scooter always
- 1:34:55plays push the chewing gum on the button of his cap and he goes out there and plays
- 1:35:00shortstop that came from that 17 game winning streak he was telling me and he
- 1:35:04would take it off and kept showing it for 17 games talk about superstition but
- 1:35:10that's what made him a great ball player not the superstition the ability and he
- 1:35:15was one of the great ones the pitchers outside for a ball one ball no strikes
- 1:35:20on Walt Williams Walt tonight walked in the second inning sacrifice flying the
- 1:35:26fourth an RBI for Walt Chambliss leads off first Milner is holding the pitch
- 1:35:31Williams takes a breaking pitch down low to close to an old two men down or in
- 1:35:37the top half of the sixth inning the Yankees are leading in the game three to
- 1:35:41nothing each team has four hits
- 1:35:46stone goes to the belt Chambliss with the lead Milner holding the pitch to
- 1:35:50Williams swung on a miss Walt took a good cut and didn't get it on deck is
- 1:35:55Rick Dempsey
- 1:35:59the Yankees and the New York Mets 13th annual Mayor's Trophy game good crowd
- 1:36:04here tonight
- 1:36:07George stone again to the belt checks the runner the pitch is lined or short
- 1:36:11and it is glove by Mike Phillips and the Yankees are retired and the sixth
- 1:36:16inning with one run and the Yankees had one hit one run a left-hand base and
- 1:36:24no errors by the best at the end of five and a half the Yankees lead it three to
- 1:36:29nothing
- 1:36:36after years of selling only one kind of gasoline the Getty Oil Company is now
- 1:36:41selling to get a premium and getting no lead which one should you use well if
- 1:36:48you drive a 71 through 74 car chances are it can run on a gasoline like getting
- 1:36:54no lead if you drive a 75 it probably has to run in a gasoline like getting no
- 1:36:59lead on the other hand if you drive a car that was built in 1970 or before
- 1:37:04you'll get the top performance you want from getting premium but no matter what
- 1:37:09kind of car you've got and getting Scott what's best for it remember don't waste
- 1:37:15gasoline but when you do drive fill up with getting no lead for cars built
- 1:37:20after 1971 premium for cars built before 1971 ready we've got what's best for
- 1:37:28your car
- 1:37:34well we have a new pitcher down for the Yankees it's gonna be Kenny Clay and I'm
- 1:37:38anxious to see him fish I watched him several times down in spring training and
- 1:37:43I'll tell you he looked quite impressive down there he's pitching over at
- 1:37:47West Haven right now and had a record of 2 and 0 and the Yankees called him over
- 1:37:50to pitch in this ballgame Ken play a big hit from Lynchburg Virginia comes on the
- 1:37:57pitch for the Yankees and Bob Johnson himself proud of his three innings allowed
- 1:38:01one hit didn't walk anybody struck out too bad and he had an impressive three
- 1:38:06innings and as we wait for Clay to complete his warm-up draws Atlanta
- 1:38:10leading Montreal for nothing in the bottom half of the fourth inning but
- 1:38:13that game is delayed by rain in Montreal I know a lot of our baseball
- 1:38:18listeners are probably interested in basketball as well so the ABA playoff
- 1:38:22game at halftime the Indiana Pacers 50 and Kentucky 45
- 1:38:29Don Valentino has an interest I'm sure not still following basketball yeah I
- 1:38:34sure am especially having been involved with the New York Nets we did want to
- 1:38:38mention from all of us connected with the Yankee broadcast congratulations to
- 1:38:43Barry Gray he is celebrating his 25th anniversary tonight on WMCA that of
- 1:38:49course is quite an achievement and it really is a great career at WMCA for
- 1:38:57Barry Gray congratulations from everybody we're all set to go now the
- 1:39:02bottom half of the sixth inning George Stone the hitter the pitch by Clay high
- 1:39:06and outside for a ball one ball no strikes the outfield is shallow
- 1:39:11straight away for the pitcher Stone even with a bag and third is Oliver on the
- 1:39:17grass the pitch is fouled in back over the screen one ball and one strike
- 1:39:28the Yankees and the New York Mets in the 13th annual Mayor's Trophy game over a
- 1:39:33million three hundred thousand dollars has gone to this benefit game the pitch
- 1:39:38fouled off again and back one ball and two strikes and you know Frank that is
- 1:39:43a lot of money for a very very worthy cause it certainly has a lot of kids
- 1:39:48wouldn't be playing baseball today in the New York area were it not for the
- 1:39:51Yankees and the Mets giving up an off day in their regular season to play in
- 1:39:55the mayor's trophy game Ken Clay looking in to get his sign from his catcher Rick
- 1:40:01Tempsey the Yankees lead it treated other bottom of the sixth plays pitch
- 1:40:06high for a ball two balls and two strikes on the hitter George Stone
- 1:40:16Ken Clay looks and swings out of the wind up the two to pitch and Stone pops it up
- 1:40:21and foul ground racing over his Oliver as he got room he makes a one handed catch
- 1:40:26and Stone is retired and about to have a the sixth inning
- 1:40:36Mike Phillips playing shortstop tonight the hitter Mike was claimed on waivers
- 1:40:42from the Giants he had an infield hit that Chris Chambliss made a great effort
- 1:40:47on he doled headlong knocked it down and then couldn't make the throw the throw
- 1:40:52that he made was off the mark and it was an infield hit for Phillips and then
- 1:40:56Phillips line to center field so tonight he is one for two overall hitting 267 on
- 1:41:05the season the pitch by clay check swing ground ball foul and Roy McMillan who was
- 1:41:11a pretty fair shortstop in his day coaching at first makes the pickup a bad
- 1:41:16ball player at his day no he was not ever saw Roy play not that he was before
- 1:41:21my time but I wasn't anywhere around where he did play but he was fine shortstop
- 1:41:26the 0 1 pitch is in the dirt too close too low one ball one strike on the
- 1:41:33hitter the Yankees are leading three to nothing were at the bottom of the six
- 1:41:38Mike Phillips a left handed hitter in the batter's box the pitches line towards the
- 1:41:43gap and Fadela is there playing of just right four steps over to his left and he
- 1:41:48grabs it and there's two men down in the bottom of the sex Jack Heideman will
- 1:41:53step in
- 1:42:00Jack Heideman right-handed hitter the outfield for Heideman goes back a little
- 1:42:06there medium depth straight away the Yankees are leading three to nothing the
- 1:42:12pitch to hide a man hit high in the air at a deep center field walled Williams
- 1:42:17way back still going one has it gone to the warning track at the 396 foot mark
- 1:42:23and they met to retire to the bottom of the sex with no runs no hits no errors

- 1:43:47Frank but Frank would have you back okay thank you very much that said before
- 1:43:51it's good to be back and watching baseball again Randy Tate has come on to
- 1:43:56pitch for the New York Mets right-hander and Rick Dempsey leaves off of the
- 1:44:00Yankees Dempsey has flied the right and grounded out the third right hand
- 1:44:03hitter against a right hand pitcher and the first offering Dempsey takes a strike
- 1:44:07letter high
- 1:44:12George Stone pitch six innings he's charged with the three runs and the four
- 1:44:16Yankee hits and now Randy Tate on and relief into the wind up the pitch to
- 1:44:20Dempsey swung on and lined over the middle center field base hit the Dempsey
- 1:44:26scoots down the first base makes his turn and comes back in as Gene Clines
- 1:44:30returns the infield and the Yankees have their fifth hit in the ballgame
- 1:44:40here is shot stop Jimmy Mason may sprouted into a double play started by
- 1:44:44Milner in the second inning he grounded out the Milner again in the fifth
- 1:44:48another flipping to the pitcher Johnson covering there's the set the pitch to
- 1:44:52Mason's long I look down the left field line if it's a fair ball it's a base and
- 1:44:55it is a fair ball base hit down to the corner extra bases running high Dempsey
- 1:44:59he is going to be waived around third base here comes the throw and there is
- 1:45:03no relay to the plate the shortstop Dave Phillips was the cutoff man he dropped
- 1:45:10the throw from left fielder Dave Kingman and there was no throw out of the plate
- 1:45:15Mason goes into second base two base hit an RBI single the Yankees look I rather
- 1:45:19an RBI double the Yankees lead for nothing
- 1:45:24I'll tell you that Dempsey showed me something with his legs and he was going
- 1:45:28hard and you know he's been hitting the ball very very well four four six coming
- 1:45:34into the game and they two outs he hit the ball hard going well Brett Stanley
- 1:45:38steps in right hand hitter Freddie has fly to right and fly deep to left first
- 1:45:43pitch was high and evidently Stern was crossed up by his pitcher Randy Tate
- 1:45:49because he goes to the mound and Dick Hauser the Yankee third base coach comes
- 1:45:53down to talk to Stanley Stanley has one job to do right now and one job only and
- 1:45:58that is to get Mason over to third base nobody out and the count is one and all
- 1:46:03on Freddie Stanley
- 1:46:11Mason leads away at second as Tate studies the side comes set and the pitch
- 1:46:20to Stanley he swings and falls about to the right side trying to go to right
- 1:46:24field with it or to the right side of the infield one ball one strike
- 1:46:35the pitcher Ken play is on deck
- 1:46:41Tate sets kicks and deals and Stanley takes a breaking pitch low of the
- 1:46:48Yankees five hits or six hits in the ballgame three have been doubled by
- 1:46:52Bobby Bonds Ronnie Bloomberg and now Jim Mason
- 1:46:59Tate ready to work into the belt and the pitch Stanley swings and falls it
- 1:47:04straight back toward the screen two balls and two strikes Yankees lead
- 1:47:11for nothing top half of the seventh inning here at Shea 13th annual of
- 1:47:20starts the old timers game the Mets have their old timers day schedule up on the
- 1:47:24board again 13th annual mayor's trophy game another foul peels back off the
- 1:47:29bat of Stanley
- 1:47:33count holes two and two Mason at second Stanley trying to go to right field and
- 1:47:37moving over the third or get him home with a base hit
- 1:47:45paid ready starts his stretch comes that here's the pitch check swing outside
- 1:47:50ball three
- 1:48:01they play Stanley up the middle of second and short first baseman Milner
- 1:48:05guards the line and so does the third baseman Wayne Garrett three to pitch to
- 1:48:11Stanley here it comes and he follows it back again Stanley still going to right
- 1:48:18field
- 1:48:21Randy Tate takes the side glove hand on the left knee and deal Stanley outside
- 1:48:38check swing ball for Stanley walks the Yankees have to on none gone on the
- 1:48:43pitcher coming up let's pause 15 seconds for station identification this is the
- 1:48:48New York Yankee baseball network
- 1:48:56this is what he for the Yankees I'm not playing ball I listen to Leon Lewis
- 1:49:01right here on WMCA New York
- 1:49:07Kenny Clay the pitcher is up there at a month took the pitch high as he squared
- 1:49:11away and Stern's rival the ball out the second base but Mason go back ahead of
- 1:49:16the throw
- 1:49:25again the set play squares and he wants it foul off the first base side
- 1:49:32one ball in one strike Kenny play right hand batter
- 1:49:39nobody out Mason at second Stanley at first one run has crossed the plate here
- 1:49:44in the seventh inning the Yankees lead for nothing
- 1:49:50Garret and Milner ready to charge here's the pitch and he takes it high two balls
- 1:49:57in one strike
- 1:50:00big stretch and the two one pitch play squares pops it up on the bump and it is
- 1:50:15caught right at the plate by the catcher Stern
- 1:50:20so Ken Clay cannot deliver the sacrifice he popped up a high fastball and there's
- 1:50:26one away
- 1:50:29Stern's the catcher took that pop up just one step in foul territory
- 1:50:40Lupa Nala for a second time lined out to the shortstop Dave Phillips his first
- 1:50:45time up
- 1:50:50Roy White started and left field came to bat twice and gave way to Penelope the
- 1:50:54pitch to Lou breaking ball low and outside ball on
- 1:51:00they have completed seven innings at Fenway Park Kansas City leads Boston
- 1:51:04three nothing
- 1:51:08the set by Tate and the pitch curveball and it's in for a strike but I was
- 1:51:14ducking away and that ball broke right over the plate
- 1:51:18I feel pretty much straight away for Lupa Nala with the left the other
- 1:51:24Kingman shaded just a bit towards center
- 1:51:29Tates one one pitch loose swings bounces one off the glove of the pitcher
- 1:51:33fielded by the shortstop over the second and he threw the ball away
- 1:51:36here comes Mason on his way home as Milner chases the ball down Stanley goes
- 1:51:41to third and Penelope's at first base the Yankees lead five nothing
- 1:51:50bounce the right back up the middle Tate got his glove up deflected the ball
- 1:51:55over the shortstop where Phillips got it and then throw it away trying to go to
- 1:51:59hide a minute second for the force play on that Fred Stanley it will be an error
- 1:52:07on the shortstop title on the shortstop Phillips on his throw
- 1:52:13and therefore no run better
- 1:52:19Ronnie Bloomberg steps in
- 1:52:23takes the first pitch outside check that must got the outside corner they put up
- 1:52:27a strike runners first and third one out the infield a double play depth the
- 1:52:32pitcher running breaking ball inside of the knees
- 1:52:47take ready to one one pitch breaking ball is high and inside two balls in a
- 1:52:52strike to Bloomberg
- 1:52:55Ronnie has been up once and doubled down the right field line in the sixth
- 1:52:59inning
- 1:53:05now Tate steps off
- 1:53:18Stanley at third Penelope first the next pitch high and outside three balls in one
- 1:53:24strike
- 1:53:36again the runners lead off to the belt Tate the pitch high and outside
- 1:53:41Bloomberg is on the bases are loaded
- 1:53:46Stanley at third Penelope second Bloomberg not first and the batter is Bob
- 1:53:58Oliver Oliver sent a sky-high pop-up to the third baseman Wayne Garrett his
- 1:54:04first time up
- 1:54:07full wind up by Tate his pitch over the head of the catcher all the way to the
- 1:54:12backstop here comes Stanley trying to score and he's safe
- 1:54:17Fred Stanley scores on a wild pitch that ball hit the glass gate directly behind
- 1:54:24home plate at the backstop bounce right back to stirs the catcher he flipped the
- 1:54:31ball to his pitcher Randy Tate covering the plate it was a close play but Stanley
- 1:54:37is safe the Yankees lead six nothing and that's a wild pitch
- 1:54:47on the plate Penelope went to third and Bloomberg the second
- 1:54:52one out runner second and third now the infield comes in the full wind up the
- 1:54:57pitch to Oliver high again ball to
- 1:55:11look in for the side the wine the kick the pitch to Oliver swing and a miss that
- 1:55:15pitch was high again but Oliver is in the lead and the ball is in the air
- 1:55:21again but Oliver evidently like the looks of it
- 1:55:32next pitch swing and a miss on a high fastball to until
- 1:55:42one left field Dave Kingman has gone back just about as far as he can go

- 2:12:23Six runs, seventh inning.
- 2:12:32Mason is one for three.
- 2:12:35They play him straight away in field and out field.
- 2:12:37The pitch to him high and outside from Cramm.
- 2:12:47The wind up by the right-hander and the pitch.
- 2:12:50Taken high again, ball two.
- 2:13:06He comes in with a strike.
- 2:13:08Milwaukee leads Texas three to one at the end of three innings.
- 2:13:12And the Red Sox are batting in the bottom half of the ninth.
- 2:13:15Kansas City has them shut out three to nothing so far.
- 2:13:20The pitch to Mason, he takes it high for ball three and it's three and one.
- 2:13:34Cramm winds and offers and Mason swings, bounces one to the first base out of the mound.
- 2:13:38Cramm takes it on the hop races to the bag, gets Mason and runs into first base umpire
- 2:13:44Hank Soar.
- 2:13:48Soar was hit harder than that in his football days.
- 2:13:55Fred Stanley the batter.
- 2:13:56Stanley is over two, flied out twice and walked once.
- 2:14:11He swings on the first pitch, chops a two-overt a short.
- 2:14:14Phillips has it, guns him down to a way.
- 2:14:17And now we're going to have Greg Nuttles batting for pitcher Kenny Clay.
- 2:14:36To wind up the first pitch to Nuttles, low and inside, ball one.
- 2:15:02He takes a breaking ball over, one and one.
- 2:15:07Nuttles during the regular season batting two ten, couple of home runs, 13 RBI's.
- 2:15:13Cramm rocks and deals, pitches outside to unwind.
- 2:15:19Lou Pinella is on deck.
- 2:15:29And the two-one pitch coming.
- 2:15:31Nuttles takes a fast ball over knee-high, two and two.
- 2:15:44To wind up, two-two delivery.
- 2:15:46Swung on, hit on the ground, a second base.
- 2:15:49Coming up with a height of one on the first, Nuttles is out and so are the Yankees.

- 2:17:12Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 2:17:26This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 2:17:28Hi, this is Lou Pennello of the New York Yankees.
- 2:17:36When I'm not playing baseball, I listen to Long John Neville and Tammy Jones right here
- 2:17:41on WMCA New York.
- 2:17:43Well, Donald, I'm going to have to apologize to Dave Pagan and our listeners.
- 2:17:48It was Pagan who was in there pitching and I was calling him Ken Clay.
- 2:17:51Clay is in, so it's my mistake.
- 2:17:54And I readily admit it and I beg your pardon.
- 2:17:57So now we've got Kenny Clay in the ballgame.
- 2:17:59Well, Frank, it's very easy to do not to defend you because you don't need any defense, but
- 2:18:05for example, Ken Clay's number 52 isn't even on the roster of the program.
- 2:18:09So I'm sure fans realize those things happen.
- 2:18:12All right, Kenny Clay is in there pitching now.
- 2:18:15And again, my apologies to Dave Pagan and our listeners.
- 2:18:20The Pagan went two innings, gave up two hits, no runs.
- 2:18:24He walked one and struck out one.
- 2:18:26And leading off for the New York Nets, catcher John Stearns.
- 2:18:31Ed Herman is now catching for the Yankees.
- 2:18:35Eddie Leon is down at third.
- 2:18:37Let's see.
- 2:18:38Let me check that.
- 2:18:39He's down at third base.
- 2:18:42And Bob Oliver has gone over the first.
- 2:18:44All right, here's the pitch.
- 2:18:46And Stearns takes it low for a ball.
- 2:18:49So put Dempsey at third and Oliver over at first.
- 2:18:54Herman catching.
- 2:18:55And now we have Kenny Clay in the ballgame.
- 2:18:57Here's the pitch, swung out and fouled back upstairs.
- 2:19:14Player right-hander, as was Pagan.
- 2:19:17The kick and the pitch.
- 2:19:18Swung out, hit in the air to left field, but not almost in his tracks, waiting for it to
- 2:19:22come down.
- 2:19:23And he's got it.
- 2:19:24So there's one away.
- 2:19:31Crane Bull will bat now for Cram.
- 2:19:35Ed Crane Bull batting for Jerry Cram.
- 2:19:38Crane Bull, very popular among the Mets fans and very popular among all the folks who know
- 2:19:46it.
- 2:19:47Very likable young man.
- 2:19:49Left hand hitter.
- 2:19:51Crane Bull, when he plays pitch to him, is a called strike one.
- 2:19:56Mike Phillips is on deck.
- 2:20:02Dempsey playing him wide at third base.
- 2:20:04And the next pitch.
- 2:20:05Swung on, looked out over shortstop.
- 2:20:06It's going to drop for the base hit.
- 2:20:07Looping out, it cuts it off in the hole in left center.
- 2:20:08And Crane Bull is on.
- 2:20:09Well, it's nothing new for Crane Bull.
- 2:20:10He's been on quite a few times this season, batting 308 in the regular season for the
- 2:20:21Mets.
- 2:20:22The Mets have picked up their seventh base hit.
- 2:20:36The Yankees lead 9-0.
- 2:20:37We've got the score right.
- 2:20:40And the pitch to Phillips comes in low for a ball.
- 2:20:48The next pitch, low, ball two.
- 2:21:01Right hand pitching Ken Clay, left hand hitting Dave Phillips.
- 2:21:05Crane Bull at first.
- 2:21:06Oliver playing behind the back.
- 2:21:09In field, set for the double play and the pitch.
- 2:21:12Low again, ball three.
- 2:21:17Three balls and no strikes, one out.
- 2:21:28Jack Heideman is on deck for the Mets.
- 2:21:31And the 3-0 pitch will be coming.
- 2:21:33Here it is.
- 2:21:34It's inside ball four.
- 2:21:36So the Mets have two on.
- 2:21:42Crane Bull moving down to second.
- 2:21:45Phillips on at first and Jack Heideman, the batter.
- 2:21:49Heideman a right hand batter.
- 2:21:55Gene Clines is on deck.
- 2:22:02Clay looks down for his side.
- 2:22:11Checks back at second base.
- 2:22:12The right hander's pitch.
- 2:22:13Breaking ball is high.
- 2:22:15One ball and no strikes.
- 2:22:16And now Heideman steps out.
- 2:22:19Looks down to third base.
- 2:22:24For a sign from the coach Eddie Yost.
- 2:22:29Pitch coming.
- 2:22:32He takes a fastball over for a strike, one and one.
- 2:22:37Bloomberg plays him in a bit in right field.
- 2:22:40Williams straight away in center.
- 2:22:42The same for Penelope left.
- 2:22:45Mason and Stanley and Dempsey at third look for the ground ball.
- 2:22:49The pitch to it.
- 2:22:51He takes a strike call and it's two and two.
- 2:22:55They get one and two.
- 2:23:02Now Clay walks off the pitcher's mound, puts his fingers to his lips, rubs up the baseball.
- 2:23:10Has the sign, drops the hand and the pitch.
- 2:23:17Swung on, bow back and that will be out of play.
- 2:23:20Herman came back looking for it but it falls on the screen.
- 2:23:33Down the Yankee clubhouse before the game and I did not see Dave Fagan and I did not
- 2:23:37know he had been called up for this game.
- 2:23:39I knew that they had called Bob Johnson and Kenny Clay and I talked to Clay for a little
- 2:23:44while.
- 2:23:45He kicks and he deals.
- 2:23:46The pitch is popped up foul again toward the seats outside of first.
- 2:23:56Clay had compiled a record of two wins and no losses.
- 2:24:01Albert Westhalen, he had started four games.
- 2:24:04Twenty-six innings, twenty-four hits, eight walks, fifteen strikeouts, an earned run average
- 2:24:10of four point fifteen.
- 2:24:13One two pitch.
- 2:24:14It is high, a fastball, two and two.
- 2:24:22Yankees lead nine nothing.
- 2:24:30Clay takes the sign from Ed Herman, seems to have trouble picking it up.
- 2:24:36Now he's ready.
- 2:24:39And the two-two pitch.
- 2:24:40It is high and inside.
- 2:24:42Three balls, two strikes on Heidemann.
- 2:24:47The rain did not stop in Montreal and that game has been postponed.
- 2:24:51It washed out a four-nothing Atlanta lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 2:24:55Well they are postponed in Montreal.
- 2:25:07Clay ready to work.
- 2:25:08Kicks and deals.
- 2:25:09Swing and a miss.
- 2:25:12He struck him out.
- 2:25:14Clay just reared back and ripped a fastball in.
- 2:25:16Heidemann couldn't find it.
- 2:25:19So two down.
- 2:25:21Here's the first and second and the batter Gene Clines.
- 2:25:25Clines single his first time up.
- 2:25:30And then was thrown out at the plate.
- 2:25:33Trying to score from first base on Jesus.
- 2:25:41Rather trying to score from third base on John Miller's fly ball to Vanilla.
- 2:25:46There's a ball hit in the other right field, drops in front of Bloomberg and the Mets
- 2:25:50may get their first run.
- 2:25:51The throw goes into second base.

- 2:26:42where Dempsey grabs it.
- 2:26:44And Yogi Bearer quickly comes out.
- 2:26:46There's where those helmets are so great.
- 2:26:54He was hit right in the helmet by a pitch.
- 2:27:01And now gets up and walks down to first base.
- 2:27:05Evidently assuring Yogi Bearer and the trainer that he's okay.

- 2:27:58Phillips at third and Clines at second.
- 2:28:05And the bases loaded first.

- 2:28:17A bases clearing double by Miller over the head of center fielder Walt Williams.
- 2:28:18Now Wayne Garrett comes on.
- 2:28:37The Mets have come to life here in the eighth inning.
- 2:28:53Having been shut out through seven they have now scored four times here in the eighth.

- 2:42:05For some, only greatness is good enough.
- 2:42:13They dream bigger, set their sights higher and work a lot harder.
- 2:42:17The brewers of Schaeffer beer have worked their dreams since 1842, perfecting a beer
- 2:42:22with a rare quality of flavor that never fades.
- 2:42:42Today among America's great premium lagers, the one that came first is still the one.
- 2:42:49The one that always delivers, the one that comes through glass after glass.
- 2:43:07Here are your totals on the ball game for the New York Yankees, nine runs, nine hits
- 2:43:10and no errors, the New York Mets four runs, nine hits and one error.
- 2:43:16The winning pitcher will be Bob Johnson who pitched three strong innings for the Yankees
- 2:43:20and the losing pitcher is the Mets starter, George Stone.
- 2:43:24The Yankees got a couple of runs in the fourth inning, single by Maddox, double by Bonds,
- 2:43:32Chambliss got a run in, grounding out to second base, Williams got a run in with a fly ball
- 2:43:36to left field.
- 2:43:38Full tally in the sixth inning, driven in again by Chambliss with a base hit to right
- 2:43:43center following a double by Ronnie Bloomberg and then the Yankees broke it wide open in
- 2:43:48the seventh inning, scoring six runs on four hits, couple of walks, a throwing error by
- 2:43:53the shortstop, Phillips.
- 2:43:56Chambliss winds up the night with four runs batted in, came to bat in the ball game, let's
- 2:44:03see, four times, had two for four.
- 2:44:08And let's see, Don Valentino, you got some awards that we give out in this Mayor's Trophy
- 2:44:12Game.
- 2:44:13We've got the Butterfinger Candy Bar Fielding Award goes to Elliott Maddox tonight.
- 2:44:20Elliott Maddox made that great throw in the first inning and he nailed Dell Unter trying
- 2:44:26to go to third base.
- 2:44:28Walt Williams took the throw and made the tag.
- 2:44:30It was a tremendous throw as you remember, Frank.
- 2:44:33No hops, nothing, just right on the money, a real shotgun throw and he got Unter coming
- 2:44:39in.
- 2:44:40And he also made that great catch on Mike Phillips, I think, in the third inning.
- 2:44:43Another great play.
- 2:44:44He sure earned his Butterfingers tonight on both of those great plays.
- 2:44:50And the Yankees, maybe this will be a little bit of a cure-all, Frank, as they get back
- 2:44:54into the game.
- 2:44:55They did.
- 2:44:56They saw some good pitching tonight from Bob Johnson, who is working at Syracuse from Dave
- 2:45:00Pagan and so if they're looking for pitching, I'm sure that Bill Burton will file those
- 2:45:08thoughts away in his mind or Whitey Ford will put them down in his little black book.
- 2:45:13So that's just about the story, Dom, on our ball game tonight.
- 2:45:18Final score again, nine to four.
