- 0:04Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:08your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern
- 0:12for July 18th. Today is World Listening Day.
- 0:16Now I know what you might be thinking.
- 0:18Do we really need a day, an entire day just to listen?
- 0:24And yes, we absolutely do World Listening Day is more than just
- 0:29a gentle nudge to stop talking over your Co workers on Zoom or
- 0:34your Co hosts on your podcast. It was created by the World
- 0:38Listening Project to raise awareness about the world of
- 0:41sound, how we perceive it, how it shapes our lives, and how
- 0:46paying attention to it can deepen our connection with the
- 0:49environment, with others, and even with ourselves.
- 0:54This day honors our Marie Schaefer, A composer and
- 0:58environmentalist who pioneered the field of acoustic ecology,
- 1:02which is basically the science of how sound interacts with our
- 1:05environment. It's a day to pause, unplug, and
- 1:10just listen. Not scroll, not refresh, not
- 1:14interject. Just listen.
- 1:19Listen to nature. Listen to vehicle traffic.
- 1:23Listen to other people. And that brings us to today's
- 1:27quote from Stephen R Covey, who once said most people do not
- 1:34listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the
- 1:38intent to reply. Ouch.
- 1:43That one stings a little, doesn't it?
- 1:47Covey, best known for his book The Seven Habits of Highly
- 1:50Affected People, which is a great book, by the way, He's not
- 1:55just calling us out, he's inviting us to slow down.
- 2:00Real listening isn't about nodding politely while you wait
- 2:04for your turn to talk. It's about being fully present,
- 2:08tuning into the emotions beneath the words, and actually caring
- 2:12about what's being said. Imagine that.
- 2:17So today, whether you're eavesdropping on the birds
- 2:21outside your window or actually listening to your friend then
- 2:24for the fifth time or the 500th time about their job, try to
- 2:31take a moment to hear what's really being said.
- 2:35The world's making music all the time.
- 2:39You just have to stop rehearsing your next line long enough to
- 2:42hear it. That's going to do it for today.
- 2:46I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 2:51tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 2:57with another daily quote.
