Transcript
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome on in.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's that time of week.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big week here on the Sooner's on SI softball show as we prepare And preview Oklahoma's trip down to Austin America to battle the Texas one more It's what first we want to take a quick look back at this past week It is a whole through Kentucky and a bunch of people put up gotty efforts
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: Along the way Ryan Chapman here, joined by my good pal Ryan Avery, Mr. Avery, how was it?
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's not been a lot that we've attacked, keeping the soft balls deep, but I'm gonna leave it.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: We both been heavily involved, but usually you take a game I'd take a game.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: We were posted up together for a couple of these games this past weekend.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's certainly big for a lot of reasons, you know, obviously, what's oh, you just got coming up here this weekend and beyond on the schedule, and also just the importance of, you know, continued with Jen Roch's return and just getting into the thick SEC play.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: So it was, uh, it was nice to be out there with you this weekend, and I think we,
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: Continue to learn a lot about this team and several individual players on it.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, first stop, the big takeaways.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oklahoma sweeps Kentucky, none of those games particularly even close.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you watch the first tenings of a couple of games, you might be like, oh, what's going on here?
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then, Audrey Lager gives up basically three singles.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: And that's it, turns the faucet off.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: Miley would chain you gives up a singular home run, turns the faucet off, and Sid Burzon did not let a ball get out of the infield.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty cut and dry there.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be a ton to get into, but I think the biggest thing coming out this weekend is the performances of Oklahoma's freshman.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: The Kindle Wells of it all, which we'll get into, the fact that Kai Miner starts this thing off with a bang with a three for three day on Thursday, closes it with another big showing on Saturday, then Lixemick Gailer just drops a casual 5RBI game in between there on,
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: Friday, but let's start on Saturday and work in reverse ever.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: We saw on Friday, Kindle Wells got all a one.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: Hammers, Homer number 29 on Saturday.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think she got much of it at all, but.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: If you read the big Kendo Wells feature and all that stuff you'll see that she's someone that can miss hit some balls and slice some balls out to that power alley and right field and she did just that which was historic as it ties the NCAA freshman record at 30 and now Ryan you look at it they've got four series left in SEC play a handful of midweek games regionals which is always a
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: We're getting into the territory of this is no longer win or it's no longer if it's just win for Kindlewell's knocking out all these records
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it is.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's becoming inevitable that she gets, you know, not only the program record with, you know, Jocelyn Allos 34, but also Lauren Espinoza's NCAA record.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: It was set a long, long time ago, and for her to have a chance to break that, and like you said, it seems inevitable at this point, as long as she stays healthy, you know, that she's gonna break that record.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just incredible.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I asked her about this after the game on Saturday, you know, a lot of freshmen come out of the gate with great success, but as pitcher start to adjust, there's an adjustment period and we've seen some really, really good hitters, I think, to some extent Allow and Chamberlain included that needed a bit of time to adjust through that and would go on
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: some slumps and then bounce back and take off from there, she's been able to sort of ride through those things and even though she wouldn't say a whole lot about how pictures have changed their approach, it's clear that they have to some extent.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: Now
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: Not as much as she was on a team with out players like Gabby Garcia and Cassidy Pickering and Ella Parker around her, but still the dynamic has changed for her and she's still been able to get the ball out of the ballpark consistently, not only with the 30 home runs on the season, but to do it in five consecutive games now that she said a homerun
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: It is just incredible, and you know, if she's able to do it in the first couple of Texas, she would tie another NCAA record for consecutive games with a home run held by a few different players for them, but the one that everybody knows, no surprise, Jocelyn Allo.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and, and you look at it, too.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's that Espino's record was set in basically 80 games was what 78 or 79 games.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, they're, well, are they game 41 or 42 coming off of this weekend?
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's 40.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: 41.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they played 41 games.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, either way.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's basically you're hitting a bow, a smidge under the halfway point.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: She's not halfway to the record.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: She's seven homeruns away from the record, which is kind of incredible.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, it's like you, you asked her.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's a similar question about I tried to ask her when, you know, have her up to the side one on one, which is like, have you noticed?
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, oh,
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, I mean, yeah, they're going to get more film on me, but my team's so good that they're scouting all of them too much.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're scouting all of them, but they're also scouting you and they're scouting you the most and they're scouting you more.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: It teams have done the film on Elaparker for three years, and while she can do this to get better, they have like a basis for that.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: This is the same thing that we saw in 2021 and 2022, right, Ryan that basically the only time and part of why I think Johnson was able to chase so many of those records is because the only time teams truly said, screw it, we're just going to pitch around Johnson Owl is when she got all the way up to the career record because they were sissy's and didn't want that record to be set on them.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: When you have a lineup like what Oklahoma has,
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: You can't really pitch around her because you're going to pitch around her to what Gabby Garcia or Eleparker or Cassidy Pickering or any of these other studs and you look at it and go No, because I'm going to pitch around her.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she's a record senator home run hitter Only to a bunch of other home run hitters.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to finish with like 20 plus bombs this year So I think you saw that a little bit there was just like a singular instance that
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think Kentucky just got down in the count on that they entered the at that thinking we're going to pitch around well So they said okay, we'll pitch around or once and that's when I think it was Ella Parker that absolutely made Kentucky pain It was a tough setup for Kentucky this weekend couple of pitching injuries meant that they basically have three arms and it's something that the Kentucky coach on Thursday was like
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think everyone knows what they are, so we have, we'll try to get this thing going for the rest of the weekend, but it's been absolutely spectacular, just the consistency that she's had, and I just don't see this thing.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like, again, even if it slows down, she is so far along that it doesn't really matter how far it slows down.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see a world in which she does not get to at least, like, honestly, 40.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, there's no doubt about that.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I think back to the fifth inning of Saturday's game, I believe, when OU ahead of Wells gets a Malois single, Abbey Dayton Walks, and then when Roy was at third, because Abbey Dayton walked on a wild pitch, Dayton takes second,
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: and Kentucky gave her nothing anywhere close to the zone to hit, walk the bases loaded, Garcia, you know, grounds into a field of choice right after that, but then Pickering makes him play with the walk off grand slam there to end the game and it's just, you know, we're seeing
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: and are pitching her, pitching around her, pitching differently.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: But if you accidentally get one in the zone or if you're in a place where you have to really attack her, she's making a pay and it's just stunning the job that she's done.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was looking at the NCAA record book just now.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: Espinosa in her record setting year 1995, I was still in high school.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: when Laura Espinoza was set in this record.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: She played in 72 games.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a much different dynamic than it is now, you know, Allo in 22 played in 62 games when she hit the 34.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a different game now.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: And Espinoza, you know, deserves, you know,
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: all the the flowers in the world for what she was able to do then and how long that record is stood but what Kendall Wells is doing right now is something that nobody has done and you know I'm not going to say nobody will do because Kendall Wells could come back next year and you know blow it out of the water and she still got you know several years of that
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: She's created some separation with Megan Grant although Grant hit one I believe yesterday To close the gap a little bit, but not much.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's she at 25 Right now is that right?
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: So what looked like it was gonna be a neck and neck race Kind of wells as as created a little bit of separation although You know Megan Grant can hit him at bunches too, but that'll be Fund a watch here over you know the next month or so
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of else also didn't win a women's basketball national title between the last time that we spoke, which is a whole other story on its own other end of things, but yeah part of the thing with Wells, too, is that not that she's been hitting a lot with the bases empty because Pickering had been so good in that lead off spot up until really the LSU weekend, but we talked about it a little bit last week.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: got to see another instance of kai minor keeping that lead off spot on Tuesday against which toss day kept that lead off spot all weekend.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that in a way, regardless of who is getting on base more kai minor, Cassie Pickering, I think it's more stressful for opposing pitchers to have kai minor ahead of wells because her on base percentage is basically 50% of the time she's on base.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: Patty Gaston talked to us on two Thursdays, excuse me, and basically said, if Chi minor gets a walk, Oklahoma scores that internally essentially as a double, because she gets a walk, she's probably going to steal second, and Patty Gaston's just going to send her.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: So with Kendoel steps in, you already have the stress most of the time of one of the fastest runners in the country on the base paths.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: And then on top of that, now you move Cassie Pickard, who's swinging a hot bat behind Kindle Wells in some former fashion, however, Patty Gasso and JT Gasso like to stack it up with Ella and Gabby and Cassie Pickering, I think that's even more stress.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: because it's like, I've got behind me probably on second, one of the fastest people in the country.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: I look over if I just happen to glance at the on deck circle, you're getting one of Gabby or Ella or Cassidy.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: If you look further under the dugout, the other one is just looming, waiting.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's got to be an absolute headache in a very, very, very stressful situation for every single pitcher that steps put in the circle.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: And that's before you even have to throw pitches to Kindle Wells, which we know is an adventure in itself.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it really is just incredible and it's a, you know, a pick your poison, which he said a lot with Oklahoma lineups, but I do really love the dynamic that kind of minor brings to the top of the order and, you know, we saw this weekend, I mean, her double on a hard hit ball straight up the middle.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: might have been, you know, for all the big time home runs that we've seen from kind of wells this year, well, we've seen from, you know, TRA Jennings and, you know, Ella Parker and Jocelyn Allo.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: it might be the most incredible thing I've seen on the softball field to have kind of minor beat out a double right up the middle that you know I don't know about you run but I sort of looked away because you just you know the ball goes up the middle and you think single so you
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: take a quick look at whether it's the stats, the live stats, or another score, or whatever, and then all of a sudden look up and she's sliding into second ahead of the throw.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just unbelievable what she continues to do and I think Patagass said it.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: best after the game that you know she is everything you could want out of a lead off hitter and she's you know got the power that the modern game demands but she's also got the speed that the traditional lead off hitter has I mean it's you know it's almost like Ricky Henderson back in the day that just changed the game of baseball and she's you know not that she's doing it to the same extent because there are
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's trended in that direction, but Kai-Miner is just unbelievable with what she's doing right now.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just crazy to think about all these freshmen because I think in a lot of years, Kai-Miner would be one of the talks of college softball period in a lot of years, Alyssa Parker, and Lexymic Daniel would be getting much more attention than they are, not that they're not
- 14:25[SPEAKER_01]: It certainly would be broader, but the job that this freshman class is done with all four of those has just been unbelievable.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: And they're going to continue to be big pieces of the line up here for the rest of the season.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously in a little Parker's case, be a big piece of the pitching rotation as well.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I feel bad for this apartment like Berkeley's okay because Alyssa, she's had her weekends are already where we talked about man.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: She's pitching, she's at shore, all that stuff.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: This weekend, it was like, it was a good weekend.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: She was able to stop in there, was fine on Saturday, give you some late ining at baths on Friday.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: Berkeley's okay, makes her SEC debut on Thursday.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: a great weekend for those.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's just that there's so much to get to when you've got someone tying your record, you've got Lexi McDonald's, five RBIs, and then yeah, everything Kai was doing.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: I was just really fortunate that for the the second two games this weekend as we were both there, I was down in the first base photo, well, taking some photos, getting some art for the website, stuff like that, and
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, it was one of those situations where this is like TMI behind the curtain all that stuff for some of the lefties.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's a little bit more difficult to get some usable photos from that first base well just because everyone kind of uses that little CP something to help it now that extra protection.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: But Kai doesn't have that as much, and so you're able to get a pretty good picture from her, you know, the backside where you're seeing her eye looking down to the mound and all that stuff.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so I was like, okay, let's just get some really, really nice tight.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: You can see Kai minors eyes, the bats off the shoulder.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: That'll be great for us all that stuff.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: She hits that ball right, and she's kind of rounding first.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, all right, let's see what's happening.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I see both the second basement and shortstop, work their way, kind of pass the bag into center.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: And out of the corner of my eye, you could just see Kai was not,
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: running through first to peel off into found territory.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: She was starting to round the bag and I was like, oh, so I was just lucky enough to get the camera up and be like, all right, let's see what's happening here and that that that's how I wasn't able to like look away and stay on top of it.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, it was something that, you know, we asked Patty after the game was that a fall a go go go or is that just something and I think Patty was basically like,
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, when you've done that enough in travel ball making just turn and stuff like that, she's like, I wish I could give some credit to Folley there, but that was all kind of minor making that happen on top of just what she does in center.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: You got Lexi McDaniel, who's continued to, we talked about this early in the non-conference, right, that.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: Patty Gassos is not scratching names off of her list when it comes to big series in Austin, who is like an actual pinch hitter that you might see in a high leverage moment.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think we've probably peeled that back a little bit.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're not seeing as much tea of Aloy and Cheney helping in those situations, but you're still seeing Alyssa Parker, Isabel Immerling and Kai Miner, not Kai Miner.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: She's me Lexi McDaniel.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: Parker McDaniel and Isville in really battle for reps at first base you're seeing on a day where you want to give Barker a little bit extra rest put in Parker over there at third and Lexi McDaniel told me that five RBIs on one day she's done nothing to hurt her case as far as soon as that might get not just at bats but high leverage at bats this weekend in Austin.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, Patty Gatsos got plenty of options.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: And even, you know, you mentioned Sydney Barker there and her average is not up there with the rest of the group.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: But once she's dangerous and too, she plays such a good defense that, you know, that's kept her in the line up and, you know, she can do some other things there.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: But to be able to have that group that you can throw out there,
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: Just situationaly outside of that late in late innings can make all the difference in the world and when you've got a couple that you can feel confident in rolling out there in those.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it just changes the dynamic of how Patty gaso and JT gaso can work not only their lineup to start off with, but in late ining.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_01]: high-level situations, not that they face that a whole lot lately, but certainly there's a very likely chance that they're going to be facing a lot of those here over the next few weeks.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, these freshmen have not backed down from that challenge and not made it easy for pedigas, so to fill out her starting lineup, much less make some of those decisions
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you look at it too.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just been good news on the freshman front.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: Cassie Pickering.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: She had come off a one for twelve, showing it's LSU L Aparker.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: She had gone two for ten against LSU had had an RBI in that series and we know this with those two.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: skill issue.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a talent issue.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: And we know that they're not going to fall off a cliff.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you the bad weekend.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's very rare that they kind of sync up and have bad weekends together.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: But if there were any lingering concerns, it took you just that midweek game against which to stay.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: It
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: If, and Pickering, she had rocked it a couple, just straight into LSU gloves, it almost felt like you were waiting, waiting, waiting.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: She finally got one to drop in that midweek game against Wichita State, and all she did in these four games back at LSU, it was going 6 for 11 with 9 RBI's, Ellen went 6 for 10 with 3 RBI's, and 3 Walks over those past four games.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: in that kind of mini home stand as much as the freshman performances or excellent Ryan and we're going to talk about the pitching, we're talking about the defense here in a second.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think a big, big, big development and again, this is not something that we were going to this week and going, oh my gosh, is this ever going to come back around?
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the Pickering Ella Parker are absolute studs.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: their clutch, they've shown it to us through many Texas series through the Women's College World Series.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like, no one here is doubting any of that.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: It was just one of those things of, was it going to be a prolonged headache?
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: Or were they going to immediately be able to turn that thing around?
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: And you are going down to Austin with your two veterans and probably the two bats that you rely on the most.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: Just throughout their career in big moments, we've seen kiddawels already be clutch, but kiddawels hasn't felt the Texas series quite yet.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: We know the many time.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: The sooner it's in the long-worn step on to any field and eSport anywhere in the country, it means a little bit more and it's always a good thing when you've got a great weekend for Cassie Pickering and Ella Parker to kind of build in the dot so that everyone should be playing free and loose and swinging a bat without thinking too much elsewhere, come Friday night at Red McCombsfield.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no doubt about it because as I believe you mentioned in this story, you wrote in the last day or so that, you know, as much as those freshmen and as great as they've been and they've been fantastic, when you get to series like this so often it's the experience that leads the way and you really need those kind of hitters to be at the forefront and for
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: and sort of compliment some of the things that the rest of those experience hitters at near the bottom of the order got you know guys like alana agbayani and abbey datan what they've done uh... and others who do have that experience playing against the longwords i think makes it much easier for that uh... that that that young group to be able to
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, not that they're writing off any at bats or anything like that, but just be able to sort of get the feel for that kind of environment because it'll be different than anything they face to this point certainly anything they face to this point on the road although LSU is a tough place to play
- 22:10[SPEAKER_01]: as well, but Texas is going to be, you know, sort of frothing at the mouth after what happened to them last weekend, dropping the series to Alabama.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: Certainly they'll want to get, you know, back on the right side of things.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: And anytime, you know, OU comes rolling in, it's a big series for Mike Whiten, his bunch.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll be a fun matchup down there for sure, but Oklahoma is going to
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: Cassie Pickering and L. Parker in particular to sort of spearhead what they're doing at the plate.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: And we know that the LSU crowd hostile something that the players have talked about, things like that.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's just something different about the setup in Austin with the the outfield wall that's just a little bit higher than most walls in college softball.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then on top of that, you have an apartment building, student housing basically right beyond the leftfield wall that's very, very close.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: The noise already reflects off the wall and kind of hangs over the stadium just from the outdoor wall being large anyway, then it's like a secondary level of noise almost bouncing back in.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: When we were down there a couple of years ago, Texas was hosted BYU across the street at the dish as well, which added some extra noise.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: You got cannons going off left right in center of Texas baseball happened.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: I hadn't looked to see if there's going to be some overlap.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: This go round as they head down there, but it just creates for a really unique atmosphere.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: On top of the fact that we know it's going to be extra spunk and extra loud ready to get going there.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: In years past, you've had a Kelly Maxwell that can go in and quiet everybody on a Friday.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: Things like that, and it'd be really interesting to see how the so-called pitching staff goes and performs.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: Pitching wasn't an issue, wasn't the issue at least down in Baton Rouge.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_00]: It was the back of the offense, kind of took a half step back.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they did everything they needed to against Kentucky, but it's a really unique spot for notary lowery who got a little bit of taste of this series and a really wonky Couple of games and Norman and then it'll be the first time for a mileywood chandelier that gets tossed into an OU Texas
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: Sid Burzon, if she gets a go on Sunday, she certainly is coming off of maybe her.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the longest outing like that Ole Miss one on Monday, the Monday of that series, but the fact that she went through this Kentucky lineup and did not allow a ball to leave the infield.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: It might be her most dominant showing, even if it's not necessarily her best show.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to split airs with the longevity and the high pressure of that Ole Miss one, but
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: a good performance is all around to really go into Austin because like we said outside of the first inning for Lourden with Chanio it was pretty smooth set.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: And that's something that Patigaso talked about after Saturday's game that right now she feels comfortable rolling out, you know, all of those pictures.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: Certainly the starters that we've talked about, but even downed with the bullpin as well, and sorry got some dogs barking right out here.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Audrey Lowery has been fantastic like you said.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_01]: She got a little bit of the taste.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: Last year and a bit of a rough rough position there for her, but I think that'll certainly serve her well.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: Going down this weekend, Cindy Burzon was fantastic in her outing this weekend.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, not to allow a ball out of the infield.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: There was only one ball that was even, you know.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_01]: not hit on the ground against her was a line drive to Gabi Garcia to you know get it out there and just a phenomenal showing from her and continued showing from her that you know she's taken some serious steps forward and I think
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: with the addition of Jen Rocha, back into the fold, I think she can continue to make some significant steps.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, before the season we were talking about her as a potential ace for this squad and I think even though Audrey Lau has certainly done nothing to lose that title with this group, this is a much more balanced pitching attack
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: uh... then they've had in quite a while and uh... you know birds on uh... if she's able to get to the point where i think a lot of us expected to be and you know especially given what we saw from her last year what i saw from her down at the cc tournament where she uh... you know made elo parker in particular look a little bit silly on a net bat and elo parker talked about that
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: earlier this season.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: The movement is there.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, she's not the most dominating when you think about velocity, but the movement has gotten back to where I think it was last year and she's able to take steps.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think even beyond that here over the next couple weeks.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: So they're going to be feeling really good about their pitching staff and, you know, their
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: with Texas in some places when it becomes necessary.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I know we didn't talk about this on the softball show last week.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention, sorry, Texas baseball is not at home this weekend.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: They're over in college station for a little bit of an interesting series for them.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: So, one have to deal with the cross back and forth between the softball park and dishball.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, just means that Mike White might have another like lonely walk back to his car and I don't mean lonely is in like a, er, Mike White is in the last time that we were there.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: They had won the series on a Sunday and he's walking back to his car.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was the only human around.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, like, just like silently plods up the street and heads back to his car and heads home to think he's going home to grab a beer and watch some Liverpool highlights.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: all right and what a life it is but now it'll be something we didn't talk about last week on the softball pox we hadn't talked to Jen Rocher yet but we talked about last week on the the full on pod was did get to tip talk to Jen Rocher and you look at that like Tuesday matchup with witch toss state and while if you just look at the box score and the split it wasn't the best outing for birds on that's some of the patty gas so ancient Rocher had both been like I
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: I really liked the movement on her ball.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: And Patty was like, Coach, I love what she saw to sit.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: It would just was a better swing, that kind of thing.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think you saw a continuation of that on Saturday, a little bit what she was talking about with that Kentucky line that just looked befuddled basically the whole time.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: And she got some great deepened behind her as well.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: There was a sliding catch by Lana Agviani.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: That was for Machinio on Friday.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: And you had Gabby Garcia's big-time play.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: And what was that, the fourth?
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was the in the forth, although she made a couple of really nice plays in that game, but the big big time when was in the forth, one of the the best plays that we've seen a long time for a short stop going into the hole.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen that.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen a couple of moments, not this past week, but just across the season of Ella Parker saving runs from right field.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: Her run saved stat is a right field.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at the advanced metrics, I'm sure it's pretty fantastic.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's something that you would ask Petty Gasso and she talked about that she loves where her deepens is at.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_00]: And we had kind of speculated about this.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, as the pitching has gotten better, the defense has gotten better, and I truly like more than ever believe that this is a defense that knew early in the year, it was breaking in some new pitchers, breaking in some new pitchers that then had lost Coach Rocha, to her leave of absent, so there was the new brain trust with Carla Keeney Steppinant.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: I really feel like this is a group that was pressing early on.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: They're still only seventh or they were seventh as I looked yesterday in fielding percentage in the country, which is not bad at all, obviously, but I kind of feel like they would be even higher, which had a gas so does not sleep until she is number one in that fielding percentage thing, but she talked about it and I always love and she prepses.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to believe this, but even when she am chimpses was like,
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: Coach, I believe that everyone at every level is very familiar with the defense of the shape of his moniker, and we've seen it.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_00]: She evoked the name of Jayden Coleman.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen specifically in the Texas series in the past, and specifically in Bethlehem in the past.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_00]: Why has Oklahoma, I know that last year or two years ago, she used me Texas to be able to get the regular season series and last year Texas won the National Championship and got to you in, okay, see.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: Oklahoma just not having a bunch of errors making plus deep into plays.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's not always the negative.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's the plays that they make that Texas and OSU just simply don't make it times.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: That has turned the tide and how many of these series over the last decade.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like most of them.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it really has.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, she brought up, you know, J.D.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: Coleman's great catches at the wall and how big, you know, those turn the tide during some of their women's college world series games and really on and on and on.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you are seeing it that this defense feels much more confident, comfortable behind the pitching, doesn't feel like they've got to make, you know, the spectacular play.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_01]: uh... to to have a chance to win although they're making plenty of those now i i think you're seeing that you know probably most in island of agbayani who i think was among those that was really seem to be pressing a little bit uh... you know for a good portion of the early part of the season had some uncharacteristic uh... airs from her you know gabby garsia we saw her make a couple early
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: but this defense is really rounding in the form and it's not just, you know, Garcia and Ogbeine up the middle.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just Chi minor and center or, you know, Ella Parker, like you mentioned, it's a collective effort and we've seen them be able to do that and even though, like you said, they're seventh as of the games on Saturday, not sure if that would have shifted a little bit with some of the Sunday action there.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're not too far behind.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: They're at 983 right now, uh, fielding percentage, uh, Georgia leading the way at 987.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, of these 16's ahead of them, five of them are SEC squads.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, uh, you know, they've certainly got a chance to, uh, make their way up that list.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: And the one behind them, Tennessee, another SEC squad in Arkansas is in the top ten as well.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_01]: So, what is it?
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Eight of the top ten, fielding teams in the country,
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: are from the SEC and, you know, my guess is OU is going to finish higher than seventh on the national list when it's all said and done.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's another thing too, where so much when you're looking at nitpicking and splitting hairs and things like that, it's about talent and then what can you improve versus what something you've got to live with, then when you look across the board, whether City Barker is going to hammer 15, 20 home runs or not, stuff like that.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_00]: She's a really, really, really solid backup option at third, certainly not a liability, even if she doesn't make a couple of the plays that maybe Nelly would hear in there, but
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: You've got really no worries about Gabby or Alana back up the middle, especially in the lineup, the outfield organization where Cassidy Pickering's uses your DP, whether you have like Dayton and left and Kai Miner and Senator and Ella Parker, right?
- 33:41[SPEAKER_00]: We know that Ella's not slow by it, he means, and then she certainly showed us what that arm can be.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_00]: You just look at it and go, I don't really know what the weakness is.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_00]: And some of the like errors that we've seen have come
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: uh, early in the season, some pressing stuff like that, and then otherwise it's like, uh, you know, two of their errors on the season came from a list of Parker and a lot of agbiani kind of have a miscommunication at first base, which I think you can chalk up to that is a freshman who's not playing first base full time kind of got caught between two minds of couldn't dig this out, do I need to go cover stuff like that stuff that like patty gas so just has more and more time as the season wears on.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: You expect that to improve and get better and better and better.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's the kind of stuff that you can drill.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's not like a lack of skill or oh my gosh, it's a thing here.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a freshman who doesn't play everyday first phase.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: It gets in that spot.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: It compounds one error into two error.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like stuff like that.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's how we know that patty gas can continue to work on that all throughout the season side.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's not really concerned.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_00]: about that there.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: And like you said, I mean, with the, the place that Gabby Garcia and Island agbionic can just turn up the middle as far as how many times last year were those two turning a inch perfect double play that wiped everything away and suddenly you go from a tense moment to Oklahoma's coming back to hit and not going to be the case this weekend as they head down to Austin.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: In like the Arkansas series ahead, the Georgia series had usually those plays are followed up by a big offensive boom.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: The momentum gets off and run and loves field is rocking and that can swallow opposing teams up.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen that a billion times.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we've started to see them, you know, do that some over the last couple of of home series that they had, like you mentioned, not going to be the case down there in Austin, but, you know, at times it looked like,
- 35:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Kentucky, like you mentioned, had a couple of nice first innings, and everything, but also once it started going, you just felt like they were sort of beat, and obviously that part of that plays into their pitching depth and things like that, but they've really been able to take it up a notch when you look at even the Ole Miss series down at Oxford.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: In, you know, this series, you know, some of the defensive plays that they made down at LSU, I think played a big part in helping them escape there with the series victory and, and they've just been able to, you know, do that and, you know, that momentum continues to build, but also you take it away from your opponents.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_01]: in a big time way.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: And we've seen OU also on the other side of that really be able to take advantage when an air has extended an inning or, you know, let's say, Kai Meiner reach base on one of the few at bats where you're able to, you think you're able to retire her and then, you know, things can start snowballing from there.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_01]: So this defense, you know, we're going to talk about pitching
- 36:41[SPEAKER_01]: But the defense is a massive part of one YOU has been successful and to want to have got a chance to be really successful here moving forward through the rest of the season.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, too, that's going to be a huge piece of this weekend because for as much as we've split hairs with Oklahoma's pitching staff, if you look at what Texas has done, it's a 2.58 ERA, but you dip into SEC play, that's up to 3.63, which you would expect a little bit of uptick in the conference play, but you specifically look right and I know that Texas was able to get two of three in that ANM series, but.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't because A&M wasn't able to scratch runs across, especially in that second game of that series, Texas was in a come from behind mode there, often as far as what they were trying to do.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_00]: You looked what Alabama was able to do, another high-powered offense, they came in and scored with Texas.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_00]: And it's pretty much the usual suspects.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: You got the freshman Hannah Wells, but it's
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: Teagan Kavan, who Oklahoma had usually hit really well up until the world series, and Teagan Kavan had that kind of incredible human moment with her grandma passed away.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was at the morning of the OU game, and then Texas finally gets over the hump and beats Oklahoma north of the Red River for the first time.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: literally years, you got set lowly good at rare as coming back in, camera Salman who didn't see a ton of last year in these series, but she was kind of a late addition to the party of the Oklahoma to plenty of fun with her and then, yeah, and it was coming back in.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: So it's going to be really, really interesting because for the Gabby Garcia L. O'Parker, I want to agbiani, casty pickering Isabella Emily, like for the returners,
- 38:21[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a lot different about this Texas pitching staff outside a Hannah Wells which can sometimes be a good thing especially if you're able to kind of retain year over year scouting every hitters kind of different when it comes to that.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't know, it's going to make for kind of an interesting series because
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: For once, it feels like so many years it was like the exact same OU lineup and Texas was rolling over trying to see if they could plug in play and get new pieces that would have success.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_00]: This go around not that like Oklahoma is totally new or anything like that, but a lot of new faces out in the pin for Oklahoma that Texas is going to have to deal with.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: And certainly they're going to have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out this chiminer kind of wells thing while all the OU batteries are going to be dial in pulling out their notes from last year going what worked, what didn't here get to the Texas pitching staff.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you talk about the SEC stats and, you know, Tegan Kavan has been, you know, really good, but her SEC numbers, three, eight, three in the ERA and also just how much she's had to pitch during a conference play.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_01]: She's throwing 42 innings.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_01]: They don't have another pitcher with more than 15.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's Hannah Wells is right at 15.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: Goody Aras at 14 on a third.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_01]: Tegan Kavan is handling, you know, the bulk of the workload here, and I think certainly the familiarity with Kavan not only for use hitters, but also for one JT gaso.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: We'll play a massive role and anytime you have JT Gaso and Mike White, sort of going head to head just the softball brain trust, a type of way, it's, you know, fascinating, so this weekend's going to be a, you know, a really interesting series from, from that angle and about 3,000 other angles, for sure, but, you know,
- 40:12[SPEAKER_01]: Kavan has been really good also at striking out hitters.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: She said what is it 43 strikeouts in those 42 innings in SEC play or numbers overall the season are you know so so good but like you said oh you
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: has seen a lot of these pictures before and certainly JT has a book on them and no use hitters or good enough where they know obviously Hannah Wells is a little bit of an exception to that but it will be a fun one just from a chess mass perspective in that dynamic this weekend and then obviously with what Texas has on the offensive end there are a lot of
- 41:00[SPEAKER_01]: Familiar names there when you talk about Katie Stewart and resatwood and Viviana Martinez and some of the others You know, it's gonna be a heck of a series and probably the biggest series in college softball So far this season
- 41:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: And back on the pitching, it's like it.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: Sit lowly goodie areas too, though, not haven't rocked and rolling totally.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: She's a spot where she had been pulled up in the research earlier this year when we go all the way back to opening night and the night that Kinsey Brown had as far as we're going up all those strikeouts.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_00]: We're having to go back.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_00]: most in a non-world series situation since Siddhwally Guteria is at the big total tournament a couple years ago and fortunately for Siddhwally they still lost that game because that that was part of that string we're just Mike White could not scratch across a big three north of the Red River but we'll see I don't think that suddenly a lot of things have shifted in this series Texas obviously wins an national championship a year ago and has shown multiple times you have these last few years they've become a much more resilient team and I think
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: like what Oklahoma has forced them to become if they want to raise their game to another level, that's something that whether you love them or hate them, Mike White has always been very, very upfront about like playing Oklahoma and playing these Oklahoma teams every or has raised what Texas.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_00]: has to be, and you've seen that with, uh, we'll see what that looks like for the Katie Stewart's and Lee and Goods and the Caden Henry's and the, uh, Reese Atwoods that have been in this over and over and over again.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_00]: And this is a spot to that when you look at it for a Texas team, this is not a,
- 42:38[SPEAKER_00]: eliminator, but it could be really, really close.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: Texas cannot afford it.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: These teams are so good.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to be picking a sweet by anyone, but if Texas has what happened to them a year ago, which is Oklahoma brings them into love, field, and sweeps them in and out of there, suddenly Texas is going to be looking up at it.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_00]: In that scenario, it would be what a 14-in-one Oklahoma Texas would then have six losses on and while Oklahoma still has Arkansas, Georgia and AT&M.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_00]: That would effectively not Texas out of the SEC race, and it would kind of become a two-horse race between OU and Alabama.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_00]: I would thank Alabama as a team that they certainly do not have easy series like this up to go at Tennessee, then they have South Carolina.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: I believe coming in this weekend they're at Auburn, which Auburn's not good again.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: We've discussed Auburn and I have given my thoughts on their right field situation, but that's still a rivalry type weekend down on the plane.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a spot where I'm not expecting anyone to just like run away and hide with this SEC race because all the twists and the turns, but
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: Texas has got to win this series to feel if nothing else even if it just comes in and takes two at three, Texas is going to be looking up at what a 13 and two Oklahoma and SEC play with five losses already going.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: We need a whole lot of health elsewhere with all you have in six of their nine games back at LoveSpute.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: It becomes, yeah, really difficult if OU wins a series for the long horns to even think in that dynamic.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, even this weekend, I think if they're able to, you know, somehow sweep, I'm not going to predict that.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think I would probably, you know, have one of these teams went in two out of the three right now.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, even Alabama would be a little bit of a difficult position, but they have Kentucky, and after Auburn this weekend, you mentioned they've got Kentucky.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_01]: Now, their last two series get, you know, significantly more difficult with, at Tennessee, who has struggled a little bit recently, but still has, you know, pickings in their rotation,
- 44:51[SPEAKER_01]: one of those top tier SEC programs.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_01]: Still one that can always jump up and bite you over the last few seasons.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_01]: So it's going to be a fun SEC race here to close, but really, you know, if Oklahoma's able to go out there and somehow get a sweep, you eliminate Texas, you know, put OU as the clear favorites here with three more series to go.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Ford and ANM and even Arkansas to some extent are sort of hanging on on the outskirts of that race, but it would virtually make it a two-horse race if OU's able to do that.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: would be some fun spice if Mike White decided to not pitch the kind of wells.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if that's going to be an option and I don't think that anyone owe your taxes either way like cares about not pitching to someone to avoid a freshman record or anything like that as much as it is but I'm just trying to think of all the ways that we can pour some extra gasoline on this bad boy.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_00]: Haven't heard from Mike White yet this week.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be looking to the local CVS affiliates.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: We always had trouble with it in the past.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: Those are my guys.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: What are what's going on here?
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: No Mike, they're not your guys.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_00]: That's not how this works, but it should be a ton of fun.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: None the less.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it starts off.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: Really a huge run here.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's a sprint to the finish line.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: Next week, obviously, we'll have the midweek bedroom happenings, which is going to be.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_00]: Lates, I would say for us that may be an ABER is writing the stories and Ryan is shooting the photos.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_00]: Me, Chapman is shooting the photos so that I can be like, dooses, I gotta go to bed and then you're going to roll into an O and Heinecky hearing the next day.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: I know that you're just going to go.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_00]: But we've got a lot of stuff here ready to roll out.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_00]: We'll probably talk to Paddy Gas so when friends, baby on Wednesday, we'll see.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: We'll keep you updated with that once we get to the full on
- 46:48[SPEAKER_00]: That, but, ABER, you've got a story on the site right now, the website is OkumaSoonersonSide.com.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_00]: Talking about Okulhomas pitching and how Jen Rochia feels, it's in a really, really good spot leading into the week.
