- Lucas: Hei og velkommen til Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and with me as always is Luna. Luna: Hey! Ready for another episode? I've been practicing my verbs, but today I want to learn something new. Lucas: Perfect timing. Today we're going to look at modal verbs – those little helper verbs that change the meaning of the main verb. They're super common. Luna: Modal verbs? Like in English 'can' and 'must'? That sounds useful. Lucas: Exactly. In Norwegian we have 'kan', 'må', 'vil', and 'skal'. Let's start with 'kan' – meaning 'can' or 'able to'. For example: Jeg kan snakke norsk. Luna: Jeg kan snakke norsk. That means 'I can speak Norwegian'. Let me try. Jeg kan snakke norsk. Lucas: You got it. 'Kan' comes from the verb 'å kunne'. So if you want to say you can do something, use 'kan' plus the main verb in infinitive. Jeg kan spise, jeg kan drikke. Luna: Jeg kan spise. I can eat. Easy. So what about 'must'? That's 'må', right? Lucas: Right. 'Må' from 'å måtte'. For example: Jeg må gå. I must go, or I have to go. Luna: Jeg må gå. That's short and to the point. When would I use that? Lucas: Maybe when you're late for a bus. 'Unnskyld, jeg må gå'. Or if you absolutely need to do something. Let's practice: Jeg må gå. Luna: Jeg må gå. Got it. Now 'vil' – that's 'want', right? Lucas: Yes, from 'å ville'. Jeg vil ha kaffe. I want coffee. Or Jeg vil lære norsk. Luna: Jeg vil ha kaffe. Oh, I can use that at a cafe! Jeg vil ha kaffe, takk. Lucas: Perfect. And 'skal' is for future plans, like 'will' or 'going to'. From 'å skulle'. Jeg skal reise i morgen. I am going to travel tomorrow. Luna: Jeg skal reise i morgen. So 'skal' is for something you intend to do? Lucas: Exactly. Now let's try a short conversation. Say you're at the airport and you need to check in. What would you say? Luna: Umm... Jeg må gå til innsjekking. And then Jeg skal reise til Oslo. Lucas: Great! You used 'må' and 'skal'. And if you want to ask for help, you can say 'Kan du hjelpe meg?' Luna: Kan du hjelpe meg? That's 'Can you help me?' I'll remember that. Lucas: You know, if this podcast is helping you make progress, we're really glad. And the way we keep it ad-free is through listener support. If you'd like to help, you can buy me a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to keep the show going. And we appreciate it so much. Lucas: Now, back to modals. Let's recap. We have 'kan' for ability, 'må' for necessity, 'vil' for desire, and 'skal' for future. Can you make a sentence using all four? Luna: Let me think. Jeg kan snakke norsk, jeg må øve mer, jeg vil bli flytende, og jeg skal reise til Norge. Lucas: That's amazing! You used all four modals in one sentence. You're really getting it. Luna: Tusen takk, Lucas. I feel like I can actually use these now. Lucas: That's the goal. Practice these phrases and try making your own sentences. Thanks for joining us on Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. Vi sees neste gang! Luna: Ha det bra! Keep practicing, everyone.
