- 6:44Speaker 2: and then I'm gonna have you on the air. We're
- 6:45Speaker 2: gonna do kind of a little snapshot of what the
- 6:47Speaker 2: hell's going on in Barry City, specifically Barry City, because
- 6:54Speaker 2: you are very connected to the streets every day. You
- 7:01Speaker 2: every single day, seven days a week, and you know
- 7:06Speaker 2: everybody and their.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Brother about and maybe some of their family members I've
- 7:12Speaker 4: never met.
- 7:14Speaker 3: They tell me about.
- 7:15Speaker 2: People people drive down the road and yell out to Gino.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I don't even know them.
- 7:24Speaker 2: You don't even all the time, though, yeah, just about
- 7:28Speaker 2: you are very very very well known. Oh yeah, So
- 7:36Speaker 2: tell us a little bit about your your life, which
- 7:42Speaker 2: has not been easy. However, you have made some great
- 7:46Speaker 2: strides and you're now really got it. You got it together.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Now tell me about it. Where did you Where did
- 7:55Speaker 2: you grow up?
- 7:56Speaker 4: I'm the old Boston Okay. My mom had six kids,
- 8:03Speaker 4: six kids, Yeah, raised us all on our own.
- 8:06Speaker 2: All right. So did you go to elementary school down there?
- 8:10Speaker 4: I went to elementary and middle school, and then we
- 8:15Speaker 4: moved to Keen, New Hampshire. I went to the high
- 8:17Speaker 4: school and that's where I graduated in nineteen eighty four.
- 8:21Speaker 2: In where New Hampshire, in Keene, New Hampshire, all right,
- 8:25Speaker 2: graduated in eighty four. Yes, those were good, No, No,
- 8:31Speaker 2: those were good years.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Oh I loved it.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Those were good. The music was great back then. Were
- 8:37Speaker 2: you listening to what were you listening to a little
- 8:39Speaker 2: Duran Durant.
- 8:40Speaker 3: No, it was mostly country.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Oh you were a country girl.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I knew some of the soft talk
- 8:47Speaker 4: it and it's you know, I was thinking about it
- 8:49Speaker 4: the other day that I actually I think did that
- 8:53Speaker 4: back in school?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Okay?
- 8:54Speaker 3: Help people.
- 8:57Speaker 2: How so.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Well?
- 9:00Speaker 4: Homework if they didn't want to walk home alone? You know,
- 9:03Speaker 4: just talking.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Did you have a lot of did you have a
- 9:06Speaker 2: lot of friends?
- 9:07Speaker 4: You're kidding me, everybody, all right, I had a lot
- 9:11Speaker 4: of friends.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Okay, So then what you you finish up high school?
- 9:16Speaker 2: And then what you do?
- 9:17Speaker 3: Well?
- 9:18Speaker 4: I went stay with a friend of mine for a while,
- 9:21Speaker 4: and then I came back to Barry and actually I
- 9:26Speaker 4: did ln A for twenty years. You were in LA
- 9:30Speaker 4: for twenty years whereabouts New Hampshire. Okay, I'm here in Barry,
- 9:37Speaker 4: Saint John's Berry. I get home out.
- 9:39Speaker 2: That's tough work, man, That's like, that is really tough work.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Well now you know.
- 9:45Speaker 4: And then I got pregnant. I had my son in
- 9:48Speaker 4: nineteen eighty nine, and it's his mom.
- 9:52Speaker 2: It's his birthday July third, July third, which is like
- 9:56Speaker 2: coming up real soon here in a couple of days.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I told him the other day he was getting
- 9:59Speaker 3: to be a no fart.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Sorry, So, so you're you're pregnant here.
- 10:06Speaker 3: In nineteen eighty eight.
- 10:08Speaker 4: I got pregnant, had John in eighty nine, single mom, worked,
- 10:14Speaker 4: went to college.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Okay, where'd you go to college?
- 10:19Speaker 3: I went to CCV and I did my.
- 10:22Speaker 4: LNA, you know, classes and stuff like that, and I
- 10:26Speaker 4: actually got ninety nine on the written and one hundred
- 10:29Speaker 4: on the oorl So.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You're you're really frankly kicking ass here. You're a single mom,
- 10:39Speaker 2: you're going to college and you're in LNA.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Yep.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I did home, my health, I did hospice, worked in
- 10:48Speaker 4: nursing homes.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And then so then then what you got? You got
- 10:55Speaker 2: a little boy.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Just do the best I could. Okay, he had everything
- 11:00Speaker 4: you wanted. And if it wasn't for you know, my
- 11:03Speaker 4: mom and my dad too helping out.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:05Speaker 4: My dad was like amazing with John. Took him fishing
- 11:08Speaker 4: and bottom, you know, places went to the store bottom
- 11:12Speaker 4: because every time I turned around he needed new sneakers.
- 11:15Speaker 3: His feet were going too fast.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so what happened then? Did?
- 11:22Speaker 3: I stayed at Saint Johnsbury for a while.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And.
- 11:27Speaker 2: John's a little a little kid now he's a little
- 11:31Speaker 2: a toddler and how is life going good? And and
- 11:37Speaker 2: then what.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I'm telling you, I was very hard though working during
- 11:42Speaker 4: my life, my nursing taking care of him. But you
- 11:45Speaker 4: know what, that little boy got everything he wanted.
- 11:49Speaker 2: And then what happened after that? Did you?
- 11:53Speaker 4: I went back down to New Hampshire because I was
- 11:57Speaker 4: offered a job at Woodridge.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Urs Home in Wolfboro, Okay.
- 12:02Speaker 4: And stayed with a good friend of mine for a while,
- 12:06Speaker 4: and so I got on my feet, got an apartment.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I worked in Wolfboro I think, I want to say,
- 12:12Speaker 4: almost three years, and then my family wanted me to
- 12:18Speaker 4: come back up here, so I came back up here
- 12:21Speaker 4: and then I worked for Caledonia Home Health for ten years.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Did did everything go? Was? Was everything going well? Were
- 12:32Speaker 2: you want to?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Well?
- 12:34Speaker 3: Off?
- 12:34Speaker 2: And on?
- 12:34Speaker 3: I mean there was days that.
- 12:38Speaker 4: I just couldn't understand Why here I am with this
- 12:41Speaker 4: you know child?
- 12:43Speaker 3: Why did his father.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Father only has bothered with John two times in thirty
- 12:49Speaker 4: six years. And it's sad. You know, he's a good kid,
- 12:59Speaker 4: real good kid. Yes it's downfalls, but everybody does. And
- 13:03Speaker 4: he still comes to Mama for advice and help, which
- 13:06Speaker 4: I'm always gonna do I'm never going to turn my
- 13:08Speaker 4: son down.
- 13:09Speaker 3: I don't care if he's fifty.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Good for you and he knows.
- 13:15Speaker 3: You know. I did drink, but it wasn't like when
- 13:19Speaker 3: he was a baby.
- 13:20Speaker 2: No.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Never, Yeah, when you get older, you know, ten twelve
- 13:25Speaker 3: years old?
- 13:27Speaker 2: What happened with the drinking? Did it get out of control?
- 13:32Speaker 3: Yes?
- 13:33Speaker 4: And I had to quit my job because it was
- 13:35Speaker 4: just getting you know, get up in the morning and
- 13:38Speaker 4: have a beer, have some pot, go to work, and
- 13:42Speaker 4: I just I just couldn't do it anymore. I loved
- 13:46Speaker 4: my job, I loved what I was doing, but it
- 13:50Speaker 4: was taking a toll. I mean, my son was seeing it,
- 13:54Speaker 4: you know, and I was going through all that, and but.
- 13:59Speaker 2: It was he here to quit the job that it was. Yes,
- 14:04Speaker 2: the booze and the pot hot and the pills and
- 14:08Speaker 2: the pills, but.
- 14:11Speaker 4: You know, I almost My son was about ten or twelve,
- 14:15Speaker 4: no ten, sorry, and I ended up in the psych ward.
- 14:21Speaker 4: So he stayed with my brother. And it was the
- 14:24Speaker 4: hardest thing for me to do, but it was either
- 14:28Speaker 4: that or lose him to the state, and that was
- 14:30Speaker 4: not going to happen.
- 14:33Speaker 3: They would have had to fight me.
- 14:34Speaker 2: So when your son was ten that's when you we
- 14:38Speaker 2: really started kicking it into a gear of life getting
- 14:44Speaker 2: really hard and complicated for you with.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Addiction, Yes, and the burning and what's burning? Burning my
- 14:53Speaker 4: arm with cigarettes? And I just I guess I was
- 14:58Speaker 4: just lost. I mean, don't get me wrong. I mean,
- 15:02Speaker 4: I don't want to have my kid go somewhere. But
- 15:04Speaker 4: it wasn't good for him. Sure, you know to me, yes,
- 15:08Speaker 4: it was bad for me, but it was probably worse
- 15:11Speaker 4: on him.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I've I've never admittedly, I uh, I'm extremely ignorant with
- 15:22Speaker 2: regard to understanding burning, cutting self harm. I don't. I
- 15:30Speaker 2: don't understand it. I know that it's a it's a
- 15:33Speaker 2: real diagnosable mental illness. It is that some people can
- 15:40Speaker 2: never get beyond. But this, I just I want to
- 15:45Speaker 2: ask you, like, what made you start to burn yourself
- 15:49Speaker 2: with with this?
- 15:50Speaker 4: I think most is because I wasn't you know, connected
- 15:53Speaker 4: to Austin County Mental Health at the point. But you know,
- 15:56Speaker 4: you ask sometimes someone did ask me that time, why
- 16:00Speaker 4: do you do it? I said, if I burned my arm,
- 16:03Speaker 4: then maybe the stuff that's going on will come out
- 16:07Speaker 4: and I don't have to deal with it. But you
- 16:09Speaker 4: know what, it was still there yeah, and a lot
- 16:13Speaker 4: of people I think, feel the same way I do.
- 16:16Speaker 4: If you cut yourself, maybe whatever your feeling is going
- 16:19Speaker 4: to drain.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Out, yeah, or distract you for a while and distract you.
- 16:24Speaker 4: I had blackouts sometimes, you know, I didn't even know
- 16:28Speaker 4: what I was doing. I used to trash my place
- 16:30Speaker 4: and punch walls.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:37Speaker 3: I just couldn't control what was going on in my head.
- 16:40Speaker 2: And when I chatted with you, when we sat out
- 16:44Speaker 2: here on the streets, you told me that you had
- 16:49Speaker 2: attempted suicide.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Yes, a couple of times.
- 16:52Speaker 2: A couple of times.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Pills cutting myself. I took pills and then I drank alcohol.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I had to go up to the hospital and they
- 17:01Speaker 4: had a pump my stomach. I had to drink that
- 17:05Speaker 4: tackle that's not very good a few times.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Gino, What about other drugs?
- 17:13Speaker 4: I tried colked a couple of times, but that was it, Okay.
- 17:17Speaker 4: My main thing was drinking and pills.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Actually, a couple of years ago, they finally trusted me
- 17:23Speaker 4: to take my own.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I used to have.
- 17:27Speaker 4: One of the nurses from Washington County would have to
- 17:30Speaker 4: come and deliver my pills for the day morning and
- 17:36Speaker 4: and I hated it. Yeah, you know, I felt like
- 17:40Speaker 4: I was a child again. It just didn't feel right.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You, at some point were able to get back on track,
- 17:54Speaker 2: you say, with much help from Washington County Mental Health.
- 17:59Speaker 2: But you were able to turn the corner and Gino.
- 18:04Speaker 2: You know that that is not something that happens to
- 18:09Speaker 2: a lot of people that are able to turn that
- 18:11Speaker 2: corner and to see the light. That doesn't happen to most.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Once you get on a road, it's tough to get off.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it is. It took me a long time.
- 18:25Speaker 2: But you you got it together.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Well. You know, like I said last time, j D.
- 18:30Speaker 4: You know, when I was in the homeless shelter on
- 18:33Speaker 4: the streets, my son, you know, stay with his girlfriend,
- 18:39Speaker 4: but it was he couldn't come over and visit his mom.
- 18:42Speaker 4: We couldn't spend a lot of time together. And I say,
- 18:45Speaker 4: you know what, I got to get my crap together.
- 18:47Speaker 4: My son already went through enough. I don't want him
- 18:49Speaker 4: to go through it the rest of his life. Yeah,
- 18:52Speaker 4: and that was my main focus was my kid.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You uh, you are somewhat of now you have just
- 19:07Speaker 2: you've seen you seem like you've become somewhat of a crusader.
- 19:11Speaker 2: For lack of a better term, someone who's mission in life,
- 19:18Speaker 2: goal purpose has been to try to help others that
- 19:25Speaker 2: have been on a similar road as you are. I mean,
- 19:30Speaker 2: all of our roads are unique. But when it comes
- 19:34Speaker 2: to substance use disorder, when it comes to mental health,
- 19:39Speaker 2: when it comes to homelessness, and they're all interconnected so
- 19:43Speaker 2: so well and tightly. Unfortunately you you, you have a
- 19:49Speaker 2: sense of relatability that is massive, and you've teamed up
- 19:55Speaker 2: with the Heading Church. Yes, Pastor Ray, tell me about
- 19:59Speaker 2: Pastor Ray. Pastorray, first of all, is amazing. I was
- 20:05Speaker 2: at the one of the community meals a couple of
- 20:07Speaker 2: weeks ago and we were talking about me being out there,
- 20:13Speaker 2: and Pastor Ray actually gave me a first aid kid
- 20:18Speaker 2: and it's gotten our candidet. I carry it every day
- 20:22Speaker 2: in my backpack and she checks in. Actually, Wednesday at
- 20:28Speaker 2: ten o'clock, Pastorray and I are gonna meet. I'm studying
- 20:34Speaker 2: not a trend. What's this?
- 20:39Speaker 3: Whatding crosses?
- 20:43Speaker 2: Are you making?
- 20:44Speaker 5: Those?
- 20:45Speaker 3: No?
- 20:46Speaker 4: Somebody made them years and years ago when they redid
- 20:49Speaker 4: Heading Church. He actually took a piece of the wood
- 20:52Speaker 4: from Heading Church and made crosses. So like I gave
- 20:57Speaker 4: somebody one of my favorite crosses, but it didn't matter
- 21:00Speaker 4: to me. And you know some people are out there
- 21:04Speaker 4: asking about crosses. So I talked to Pastor Ray Wednesday
- 21:09Speaker 4: morning at ten o'clock. We're gonna say a prayer over
- 21:13Speaker 4: the crosses. I'm gonna find some strength put in my
- 21:19Speaker 4: backpack when somebody asks me about a cross.
- 21:22Speaker 2: There you go, wow, just the other day you were
- 21:29Speaker 2: out Barry City Park and you met this guy doc.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Yes, actually I just had barely met him the night
- 21:39Speaker 4: before at the community meal and we clicked right off.
- 21:43Speaker 2: You had a brief conversation with him on camera, but
- 21:47Speaker 2: a long, long chat.
- 21:49Speaker 3: About an hour and a half.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Let's uh can replace some of it. Sure, here it is.
- 21:56Speaker 6: And I have emotional uh uh so brey cats, I
- 22:03Speaker 6: have wicked BEDSD and I don't harm anybody WoT in
- 22:09Speaker 6: Washington two one five, But I have to get back
- 22:13Speaker 6: in and get my babies, my cats.
- 22:16Speaker 3: And you're also a vetteranter.
- 22:18Speaker 7: Yes, m And I went to my doctor social worker
- 22:28Speaker 7: ding dong and know I'm almost and right here in
- 22:32Speaker 7: the park very Vermont should be obviously, but I care
- 22:40Speaker 7: about people, care about.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Babies obviously, and uh yeah, uh, I'm just diagnosed more
- 22:52Speaker 5: likely have Parkinsons as well.
- 22:56Speaker 7: But I'm stayed my feet and hopefully, uh these work
- 23:08Speaker 7: out right. I'm trying to nick it Shimble advent through
- 23:15Speaker 7: a lot of okayn and uh. I want to pass
- 23:25Speaker 7: on to people. Please stay true to your self. The Lord,
- 23:31Speaker 7: the Creator, he's always with. Do you want to let
- 23:36Speaker 7: us to be a heck?
- 23:37Speaker 4: Okay, I'll tell you right now, people, this is one
- 23:46Speaker 4: of the strongest guys I have ever met. He is real,
- 23:49Speaker 4: he is true, and he's amazing. This is what's happening
- 23:54Speaker 4: in Barry. We nearly need to help these people out.
- 23:58Speaker 4: If you see anybody a Shadows, say you care.
- 24:02Speaker 8: Twenty eight of June twenty twenty five. Right now, I'm
- 24:13Speaker 8: Mark James too close. But I'm known as Doc because
- 24:17Speaker 8: I can smack you or I choose you, saved you.
- 24:20Speaker 8: That's why I'm known as doctor. So that's why I'm
- 24:23Speaker 8: an asag Doc.
- 24:26Speaker 4: If you guys see him, give him a hand out,
- 24:29Speaker 4: give him a shake of the hand. Veteran right here
- 24:33Speaker 4: served our country, homeless, he needs to help. See him
- 24:38Speaker 4: walk over, give him a handshake, give him a prayer.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I love you, Doc. Everybody take care. Bye.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Wow and when was when was hot Saturday? Okay, I
- 24:56Speaker 4: went over. Well, actually I went and grabbed the coffee first,
- 25:00Speaker 4: I went to heading charge looked around, and then I said, well,
- 25:04Speaker 4: I'm going to head to the park. I saw Doc
- 25:06Speaker 4: from across the street actually, and I said, well, I'm
- 25:10Speaker 4: going to go over.
- 25:11Speaker 3: And that's all it took.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah, normally, that's all it does take is just an
- 25:22Speaker 2: open heart of willingness just to have a conversation with someone.
- 25:27Speaker 2: And we often don't and for various reasons, and we
- 25:33Speaker 2: often can't, and we're hesitant as a as a society
- 25:43Speaker 2: to approach folks. We're not sure what their story is.
- 25:49Speaker 2: We're not sure if they're high on drugs, we're not
- 25:52Speaker 2: sure if they're mentally ill, if they're violent. I mean,
- 25:56Speaker 2: we are protective of ourselves, as we should be, but
- 26:03Speaker 2: sometimes it just takes a tiny little bit, yes, it does,
- 26:09Speaker 2: to have a conversation with someone and learn that they're
- 26:17Speaker 2: not necessarily a threat, No they're not, they're not necessarily
- 26:23Speaker 2: high on drugs, and that they've got a real story.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Well, you know, a lot of the homeless people that
- 26:35Speaker 4: do meet they're good people, and some of them do
- 26:40Speaker 4: not do drugs. They're just down and out right now,
- 26:45Speaker 4: you know. And I actually basically can walk up to anybody. Hey,
- 26:52Speaker 4: how's it going. You guys having a good day today?
- 26:54Speaker 4: And you know you have to set your boundaries. Yes, now,
- 27:00Speaker 4: if you see someone that is HI or anything like that,
- 27:08Speaker 4: just wave, So how's it gone?
- 27:10Speaker 3: Let them come to you.
- 27:13Speaker 4: And yesterday I waited and I waited like within an
- 27:16Speaker 4: hour to feel out how Doc was and I was
- 27:20Speaker 4: to get that connection and we got along great. And
- 27:27Speaker 4: I asked him can I interview you for ad out?
- 27:30Speaker 4: And I explained to him what it was. I showed
- 27:33Speaker 4: him a little bit of what you and I did
- 27:35Speaker 4: on my phone and I said, well, you don't have
- 27:38Speaker 4: to use your real name, and I said, and I
- 27:42Speaker 4: don't even have to show you. I'll put it on
- 27:45Speaker 4: where it just shows me. And he said, now that's fine,
- 27:49Speaker 4: tape me. I'll use Doc. And then before we started,
- 27:54Speaker 4: I said, it's your lead. You tell me what you
- 27:59Speaker 4: want to say.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Some people are are very up for speaking publicly, and.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Yes, Doc is one of them. They already talked to him.
- 28:11Speaker 2: There's plenty others that are not.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Well, I think what it is JD.
- 28:16Speaker 4: You got to approach him at a certain time, you
- 28:19Speaker 4: know what I mean, talk to him for a while
- 28:22Speaker 4: and then kind of like slowly put it in there
- 28:26Speaker 4: like I did yesterday.
- 28:32Speaker 2: What do you know about Brandon Carbo?
- 28:37Speaker 4: I know he's still in jail, and I really hope
- 28:41Speaker 4: that when he gets out, you stay on the straight
- 28:44Speaker 4: and arrow. But the only thing is you just have
- 28:49Speaker 4: to wait and see. You know, he's gonna have to
- 28:52Speaker 4: make that choice, not anybody else.
- 28:55Speaker 2: What got him into jail.
- 28:58Speaker 4: You know, I'm not sure because it's when you're on
- 29:01Speaker 4: the street. You hear so many stories, you know, so
- 29:04Speaker 4: I don't know exactly, you know, I just listen, and
- 29:11Speaker 4: you know, one person will say, well, Brandon went to
- 29:14Speaker 4: jail for this, so you want to joie for that,
- 29:15Speaker 4: And I'm like, okay.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, clearly he's he was still using. In the weeks
- 29:28Speaker 2: that followed my brief sit down with him, I saw
- 29:33Speaker 2: him several times, yeah, and he was clearly impaired, and
- 29:40Speaker 2: a few times right up close and he didn't recognize me.
- 29:47Speaker 2: But it's a there's a lot of a lot of
- 29:55Speaker 2: feelings that get evoked from this from so many of
- 29:59Speaker 2: us in the commun unity, and we see it all
- 30:03Speaker 2: the time, and we see it on Facebook all the time.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Primarily it seems like there's a sector of us that
- 30:11Speaker 2: is very angry. We're frustrated. We have lost our tolerance
- 30:18Speaker 2: for this. We've had enough. It's a situation that has
- 30:26Speaker 2: grown out of control right here in our immediate city,
- 30:30Speaker 2: but in other surrounding communities as well Vermont as a
- 30:34Speaker 2: whole the country. And we have a lot of finger
- 30:44Speaker 2: pointing that's going on, a lot of reasoning behind this situation,
- 30:56Speaker 2: this drug epidemic, homeless epidemic, hearing fromont We have our own,
- 31:05Speaker 2: our own problems, which are not necessarily unique to other states.
- 31:11Speaker 2: But man, we've we've got some stuff that's pretty stacked
- 31:14Speaker 2: up high.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know what, It's like a lot of things.
- 31:21Speaker 3: What do we do?
- 31:23Speaker 2: You know?
- 31:24Speaker 4: And I have connected with Turning Point. They gave me
- 31:30Speaker 4: some flyers which I've given out, and two Fridays ago,
- 31:38Speaker 4: after the community meal, they have a class for addiction upstairs.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah, the room was full. Now.
- 31:48Speaker 4: I don't know if it's because they see what's going
- 31:53Speaker 4: on with people odin and dying, yeah, or is it
- 31:57Speaker 4: a combination of me talking to them and give them
- 32:00Speaker 4: the flyers. But I tell you what, when I saw
- 32:04Speaker 4: that room fault, sure, and and I knew them all.
- 32:11Speaker 2: There's there's and there's a there's a few programs like
- 32:15Speaker 2: I mean the Phoenix right here on Summer Street, right
- 32:19Speaker 2: in the Wellness building is another one. The other sentiment
- 32:28Speaker 2: that we see and hear so much on social media
- 32:34Speaker 2: along with it, seems primarily frustration and anger. We see
- 32:44Speaker 2: a lot of that emotion. I'm I'm moving out of here,
- 32:48Speaker 2: pulling my family up, We're getting the hell out of here.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Blah blah blah. And again there's always plenty of finger pointing.
- 32:57Speaker 2: It's the city's fault, it's the police's fault. The police
- 32:59Speaker 2: is understaff. Uh, the the laws aren't tough enough. You know,
- 33:04Speaker 2: we need more, we need more cameras, we need the
- 33:14Speaker 2: there's just you know what I'm saying. And then there's
- 33:19Speaker 2: another side that is folks who are empathetic, who just
- 33:29Speaker 2: want people to be better, to get better, to be
- 33:36Speaker 2: more productive, to have a purpose, to have some drive,
- 33:42Speaker 2: some some hope.
- 33:44Speaker 3: That they're going to look forward to.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hope. It's hope. It is that they will
- 33:50Speaker 2: turn their lives around.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Well, there has been a couple that has with me
- 33:54Speaker 3: being out there.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Well, you're you're but you're one of them, Gino, you're
- 34:00Speaker 2: one of them, however, And I'm just being real here,
- 34:09Speaker 2: Folks like you are few and far between. It's not
- 34:14Speaker 2: the majority of people like you who have turned their
- 34:21Speaker 2: lives around, gotten clean, gotten sober, got an apartment. It's
- 34:27Speaker 2: just not the majority. And I think there's there's a
- 34:30Speaker 2: real sense of discouragement that many of us feel in
- 34:38Speaker 2: not not just here in Berry, but surrounding communities as
- 34:42Speaker 2: well well, that we're losing, we're losing the fight, and
- 34:49Speaker 2: it's it's getting worse. It's it has been for quite
- 34:53Speaker 2: a while now, not not just since COVID pre COVID,
- 34:57Speaker 2: but maybe COVID shifted stuff into a different gear. I
- 35:03Speaker 2: don't know, but there's folks out there that are either
- 35:11Speaker 2: totally intolerant of this or they have hope. They want
- 35:20Speaker 2: they want something either more programs, which I mean, my gosh,
- 35:26Speaker 2: you know we have so many programs around here.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and I've been talking about turning point.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It's turning point. It's Phoenix. I mean, look at look
- 35:33Speaker 2: at the churches, look at enough ministries, look at heading.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, they know by heading.
- 35:41Speaker 2: I mean there's just Washington County Mental Health Capstone. I mean,
- 35:48Speaker 2: my god, I mean the list goes on and on
- 35:51Speaker 2: and on. I mean, there's so many programs right here
- 35:56Speaker 2: in just within walking distance to turn your life around,
- 36:01Speaker 2: to get better.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Well, I see a couple of Fridays ago, I talked to,
- 36:07Speaker 4: you know, a couple of people I know, and this
- 36:10Speaker 4: kid is about twenty three, maybe talking to him for
- 36:14Speaker 4: the last month. He hooked up at Washington County Good
- 36:18Speaker 4: and he's waiting for a case manager. I told him
- 36:21Speaker 4: about Sunrise, okay, you know, and when we did the prayer, Yeah,
- 36:26Speaker 4: he actually took his hat off at the meal. And
- 36:29Speaker 4: then I looked at all the other guys and they
- 36:32Speaker 4: took their hats off. They knew, Yeah, they knew. Gina
- 36:35Speaker 4: will tell them.
- 36:38Speaker 2: The thing I the thing I love about you is
- 36:48Speaker 2: your personality. You've You've got a cheeky laugh, You're gonna
- 36:54Speaker 2: smile on your face, You're always up for a hug,
- 36:58Speaker 2: You're positive, You're full of hope. Do you do you
- 37:05Speaker 2: also feel frustration?
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yes?
- 37:09Speaker 4: But you know what, I don't like to show it.
- 37:11Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not gonna go out there and talk
- 37:14Speaker 4: to people talk. I call them kids, you know, in
- 37:17Speaker 4: their twenties. They are kids, they're younger than my son,
- 37:21Speaker 4: and I don't want to go out there being down.
- 37:25Speaker 3: They're already down and out.
- 37:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 37:27Speaker 4: We laugh, we talk, and we still to this day
- 37:32Speaker 4: hug each other say I love you. I can't do that.
- 37:36Speaker 4: I'm not going to go out there and be angry
- 37:40Speaker 4: and frustrated. They don't need that. They're already going through enough.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I just got to comment here. I'm gonna read
- 37:50Speaker 2: this JD. The drugs are too strong and some people
- 37:53Speaker 2: are just born victims.
- 37:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 37:59Speaker 4: There is a lot more stuff that's going into the
- 38:02Speaker 4: the crack, that's the word on the street, and it's
- 38:07Speaker 4: making it harder and harder now with the I think
- 38:11Speaker 4: someone said is like three drugs being put into the
- 38:16Speaker 4: crack now, So basically the ad diction is going to
- 38:20Speaker 4: be higher.
- 38:22Speaker 3: To me, that's what I feel.
- 38:28Speaker 2: All you have to all you have to do is
- 38:31Speaker 2: is glance through local news and you see plenty of
- 38:39Speaker 2: of busts that are happening. Not just here in Berry City, man,
- 38:43Speaker 2: but it's like even in the outskirts, even out in
- 38:46Speaker 2: the country. We have plenty of folks who are living
- 38:52Speaker 2: in our community who don't have roots here. They've come
- 38:56Speaker 2: up here with a sole purpose to distribute and to
- 39:01Speaker 2: make a lot of money.
- 39:03Speaker 3: I know. And it's sad.
- 39:04Speaker 2: And it's not just coming out of Springfield, Massachusetts.
- 39:08Speaker 3: New York, New Jersey.
- 39:10Speaker 2: New New York and New Jerseys. Yeah. And now I've
- 39:17Speaker 2: heard about a new line coming from the east, coming
- 39:24Speaker 2: off of the coast New Hampshire. That's that's coming across
- 39:30Speaker 2: into Vermont. So there's rings everywhere. I think we all
- 39:37Speaker 2: know that. Yes, but it seems like, you know, we
- 39:46Speaker 2: get a bust here, we get a bust there, but
- 39:52Speaker 2: then there's there's three more that have not been discovered yet.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Well that's just said.
- 39:59Speaker 4: I mean, if somebody gets busted, okay, who's to say
- 40:04Speaker 4: that not within a couple of days they got a
- 40:06Speaker 4: new batch. How much more do you bust people and
- 40:11Speaker 4: bust people and bust people. I mean it's out there.
- 40:13Speaker 4: I mean everybody that you know is doing it or whatever.
- 40:18Speaker 4: They'll find their way. Yeah, they'll find their way.
- 40:24Speaker 2: I see your short your shirt you are.
- 40:31Speaker 3: John three sixteen. One of my favorite scriptures.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 40:38Speaker 3: It says for God so.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Loved the world that he gave his one and only
- 40:42Speaker 4: begotten Son, hold on that whoever believes in him should
- 40:49Speaker 4: not perish, but have everlasting life.
- 40:52Speaker 2: When did you find faith? How what was.
- 40:56Speaker 4: The I think I always had the faith, but a
- 40:59Speaker 4: couple of years ago, I think it was a heritage festival.
- 41:05Speaker 4: I was walking around, came up to this table and
- 41:10Speaker 4: there was Pastor Ray, and I believe my friend Pat
- 41:16Speaker 4: was there, and we just started talking and Pastor Ray said, well,
- 41:22Speaker 4: once you come check out the church zam.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Two years later, I have a quick story. Can I
- 41:32Speaker 3: say it real quick?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Absolutely please.
- 41:34Speaker 3: A couple of.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Weeks ago, when it was one of those hot hot days, yep,
- 41:39Speaker 4: my friend Pat and her husband but two cases of
- 41:44Speaker 4: water left it at the park.
- 41:49Speaker 3: I went over handed out water. Make sure.
- 41:52Speaker 4: I told everybody do not throw your water bottle up,
- 41:55Speaker 4: because there is places where you can fill them. And
- 42:00Speaker 4: then I put some of my water, some of the
- 42:01Speaker 4: water in my backpack and went over to the library. Amazing,
- 42:08Speaker 4: amazing people. Now you know it's so it's not just me.
- 42:17Speaker 4: I mean, you get the Pastoray, Pat, you got Phillis,
- 42:21Speaker 4: who's a coordinator. So people can go there and say
- 42:27Speaker 4: I need help maybe with this or that. You know,
- 42:30Speaker 4: the diaper depot, the food shelves and the community meals.
- 42:34Speaker 4: So it's more we have to say. And we don't
- 42:39Speaker 4: go to church, we have the church, and it's it's
- 42:43Speaker 4: that kind of connection in the church. You know, we're
- 42:50Speaker 4: family too and we want to help, you know. And
- 42:55Speaker 4: just because we go to church does not mean that
- 42:58Speaker 4: we don't feel it. Well past the race as a
- 43:01Speaker 4: prayer every Sunday for the homeless people who were addicted.
- 43:08Speaker 4: And like yes Saturday, when I gave Doc the necklace
- 43:13Speaker 4: I had on I had just gotten this cross, we prayed.
- 43:18Speaker 3: I put it on him and he cried. Actually I
- 43:21Speaker 3: found him a hat.
- 43:24Speaker 4: He was a United States Army and he was airborne.
- 43:29Speaker 4: So I found him a hat says the United States Army,
- 43:33Speaker 4: brand new. And you know what that's going on his head,
- 43:37Speaker 4: that it's gonna go on his head like this. I
- 43:44Speaker 4: will put it on his head this morning. I'm not sure, ye,
- 43:47Speaker 4: I gotta go back to my house first, but I'm
- 43:50Speaker 4: taking that winter hat off him and putting this on him.
- 43:55Speaker 3: He deserves it.
- 44:00Speaker 2: You found Doc in the park yesterday Saturday, Saturday. You
- 44:08Speaker 2: got a chance to chat with him for well over
- 44:10Speaker 2: an hour. Yes, have you told him about the Heading Church.
- 44:17Speaker 4: I told him by Heading Church. Actually he went to
- 44:20Speaker 4: the community meal Friday night. That's how I met him.
- 44:25Speaker 3: How often is that community meal every Friday? Every Friday
- 44:29Speaker 3: except for this Friday because of the holiday.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Okay, and what time does that start?
- 44:33Speaker 3: Doors open at four? Meal starts at five thirty.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:39Speaker 4: Anyone's welcome, anybody, no matter who you are, what you are,
- 44:43Speaker 4: it doesn't matter to the Heading Church.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Okay. Are you doing something with pastor Ray where you're
- 44:52Speaker 2: having a meeting.
- 44:54Speaker 4: Or well Wednesday, Yeah, we're gonna get together and we're
- 44:57Speaker 4: gonna blast the crosses. Well, yes, today, but and then
- 45:01Speaker 4: I'm gonna find some straying and put them in my bag.
- 45:05Speaker 4: And then when I'm out there when someone says, hey, Geno,
- 45:08Speaker 4: you get a cross, here you go.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Actually I'm where on one today?
- 45:12Speaker 2: Okay? Are you going to have some type of group
- 45:17Speaker 2: meeting with.
- 45:19Speaker 4: Yes, Past Toray wants to come up with a class
- 45:23Speaker 4: on PM ministry. So me and my friend Pat is
- 45:27Speaker 4: gonna do it a couple other people.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Is it?
- 45:31Speaker 2: So that hasn't started yet, No.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Her schedule is pretty busy right now.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Where where would that be helped?
- 45:37Speaker 7: Right?
- 45:38Speaker 2: Right at the church.
- 45:42Speaker 4: So I mean, I just mentioned that past to Ray
- 45:46Speaker 4: yesterday about crosses. I text her sent me a picture.
- 45:50Speaker 4: I already knew they were there, but she's been holding
- 45:53Speaker 4: on and she said, meet me here.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Wednesday ten o'clock.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Yeah, we will put our hands on it, say a prayer,
- 46:02Speaker 4: and then in mine.
- 46:03Speaker 3: To take out.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Wednesdays here unaired out. We always hit hard on the
- 46:15Speaker 2: subject of hope with Sweethearts and Heroes every Wednesday at
- 46:23Speaker 2: nine o'clock, and we're gonna do that again this coming Wednesday.
- 46:28Speaker 2: And I look forward to having a loud and on
- 46:29Speaker 2: the air with me. But how do you feel about that?
- 46:36Speaker 2: That word hope?
- 46:38Speaker 3: Hope?
- 46:40Speaker 4: I believe this hope for anybody, you know. And when
- 46:47Speaker 4: I was an addict, I kind of gave up my
- 46:51Speaker 4: faith because I didn't think, you know, why God am
- 46:56Speaker 4: I going through this?
- 46:56Speaker 3: Why aren't you helping me? And I gave it up.
- 47:01Speaker 4: And then, like I said, when I met Pastoray that
- 47:04Speaker 4: day at the Heritage Festival, something just clicked. Two years later,
- 47:08Speaker 4: here I am and in church. Every Sunday. I go
- 47:12Speaker 4: to church, I help up getting people clothes. I go
- 47:17Speaker 4: to the community meals and walk around talk to people.
- 47:20Speaker 4: I go to the church, maybe a couple of days
- 47:22Speaker 4: a week to go and see if there's any donations.
- 47:25Speaker 4: And I need to put on the table where people
- 47:28Speaker 4: come in for their meals, it's clothes and they take
- 47:31Speaker 4: what they need.
- 47:33Speaker 2: How do you get around? Do you drive?
- 47:35Speaker 3: Walk? You know?
- 47:38Speaker 4: I told somebody one day I took my shoes and
- 47:41Speaker 4: socks office started walking around and I, okay, Gino, why
- 47:46Speaker 4: do you have your socks and shoes off? I said, well,
- 47:48Speaker 4: first of all, I don't like it, and my feet
- 47:50Speaker 4: got hot. I said, you want to know something else,
- 47:52Speaker 4: Jesus walked with no shoes and did what he needed
- 47:57Speaker 4: to do.
- 48:01Speaker 2: You gave a pair of shoes that you were wearing
- 48:06Speaker 2: that were brand new, yep.
- 48:07Speaker 4: Just had botting them. Actually it was the first day
- 48:11Speaker 4: I put them on. Gave this girl that was homeless
- 48:15Speaker 4: flip flops were broken game to her, and then I
- 48:19Speaker 4: walked home in my socks. And at that point, you know,
- 48:26Speaker 4: I look at it like I can get another pair.
- 48:31Speaker 3: They can't.
- 48:35Speaker 4: I've given out shirts, I've given out jack gets gloves, hats,
- 48:40Speaker 4: took the night off bank.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Well, not my shirt, JD. Let's back that one up.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Hey, Hey, hey, easy, this is a clean show. But
- 48:48Speaker 4: you know, I've taken off winter gloves, my winter hat
- 48:52Speaker 4: and gained somebody that was cold. I went to coat,
- 48:56Speaker 4: walked home into cold. Actually I was sitting out here
- 48:59Speaker 4: the other day at this point raining out got soaked.
- 49:02Speaker 3: I didn't care. I mean, yes, you know a lot
- 49:08Speaker 3: of people are you know.
- 49:10Speaker 4: Saying well, they made the choice to be where they
- 49:14Speaker 4: are right now.
- 49:15Speaker 3: But we don't know that.
- 49:17Speaker 4: We don't know what their history is, their background, how
- 49:23Speaker 4: did they get there?
- 49:26Speaker 3: And I'm not judgmental. I can't be, you know, And.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Like I said, we don't know what happened in their
- 49:39Speaker 4: life and every day to get to where they are,
- 49:45Speaker 4: you know.
- 49:46Speaker 3: And the thing is is.
- 49:49Speaker 4: They tell me. They tell me certain things. I keep
- 49:54Speaker 4: it to myself. I don't go around and say, well
- 49:57Speaker 4: this one said that, and this one said that, this
- 49:59Speaker 4: one said that. You know, oh another quick one. I
- 50:06Speaker 4: ran into this kid. I think I had mentioned it
- 50:09Speaker 4: to you a couple of weeks ago when I came
- 50:11Speaker 4: in to check out your studio. His cousin thirteen years old,
- 50:20Speaker 4: and he was sitting on the the turf I called
- 50:25Speaker 4: it the turf where you and I met, had his
- 50:28Speaker 4: head down, which was unusual so I sat down next
- 50:33Speaker 4: to him and asked him, what was going on? Your
- 50:36Speaker 4: tears come out of his eyes. Cousin thirteen year thirteen
- 50:43Speaker 4: year old little boy, a baby. It happened in Chicago,
- 50:47Speaker 4: But you know what, it still got to me because
- 50:50Speaker 4: I know this kid, it's thirteen year old cousin, was
- 50:55Speaker 4: hanging out with a bunch of teenagers and the teenagers
- 51:01Speaker 4: gave this little boy fetnahl. I don't know if he
- 51:04Speaker 4: knew what it was or what he didn't know what
- 51:06Speaker 4: it was, yodeed he died right there. Yes, it happened
- 51:11Speaker 4: to Chicago, but it still got to my heart. This
- 51:14Speaker 4: is my friend's little cousin. A baby, you know. And
- 51:22Speaker 4: even if you see you know the news, you know,
- 51:25Speaker 4: kids getting hurt, you know, whatever the situation is, it
- 51:31Speaker 4: don't matter if they live here in Berry. It touches you,
- 51:37Speaker 4: especially the ones that have children. You know, you don't
- 51:41Speaker 4: want that to happen to their child. And I prayed.
- 51:48Speaker 4: I prayed for that little boy. And I don't even
- 51:52Speaker 4: know him. It was the story, and I thought about
- 51:56Speaker 4: him when I went home that night. You know about
- 52:00Speaker 4: my son when he was thirteen, I couldn't not imagine
- 52:06Speaker 4: to tell you the truth, j DNA. I couldn't thirteen
- 52:09Speaker 4: years old guide right there.
- 52:16Speaker 2: It's just sip unfathomable.
- 52:22Speaker 4: And I tell you I had tears coming on my
- 52:24Speaker 4: eyes and my friend I just held on the woman
- 52:27Speaker 4: he cried on my shoulder of cause that made it worse. Now,
- 52:31Speaker 4: the tears really were coming down, and I try to
- 52:33Speaker 4: be tough, but then everybody's like, come on, Geno, you'reso
- 52:37Speaker 4: a teddy bear.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and this is someone who's right here in our community.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Yes, I don't want to give no names.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, of course, of course not.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Yep.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Have you seen this first half since.
- 52:56Speaker 3: I saw him the other day and he's doing good. Okay,
- 53:01Speaker 3: he's clean. I don't know if maybe.
- 53:06Speaker 4: You know, I can't per se, but maybe what happened
- 53:10Speaker 4: to his cousin kind of put a little trigger in
- 53:13Speaker 4: his mind. But all I know is he cried. Now,
- 53:18Speaker 4: that's heart, and he's homeless.
- 53:28Speaker 2: You had a great point when you said that we
- 53:31Speaker 2: all have different stories and different different circumstances that can
- 53:37Speaker 2: lead up to homelessness, and that sometimes mental health is
- 53:43Speaker 2: connected to that, sometimes it's not. Sometimes substance use disorder
- 53:50Speaker 2: is connected to that, sometimes it's not. We all have
- 53:58Speaker 2: a story.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Yeah, we do, and I think maybe sometimes it could
- 54:03Speaker 4: be environment the way they were brought up. I mean,
- 54:07Speaker 4: if you're brought up in an addictive family, that's all
- 54:11Speaker 4: you knew.
- 54:15Speaker 2: You and I I think every time we chat we're
- 54:20Speaker 2: going to be bringing up the subject of hope and
- 54:30Speaker 2: prayer and belief. But also one of the big takeaways
- 54:43Speaker 2: for me in my first conversation with you is that
- 54:52Speaker 2: no matter who you are or what your your problem
- 54:57Speaker 2: may be, whether it's too much drinking, whether it's too
- 55:05Speaker 2: much eating, whether it's too much gambling, whether it's drugs,
- 55:11Speaker 2: no matter what it is, all of the programs and
- 55:17Speaker 2: all of the support systems can be there and in
- 55:22Speaker 2: place for you, and all of the hands in the
- 55:28Speaker 2: world can reach out to you and guide you. But
- 55:33Speaker 2: it doesn't matter unless you have a very very deep
- 55:40Speaker 2: commitment to wanting to change that. If you want that
- 55:49Speaker 2: badly enough, then you can tap into these programs, and
- 55:56Speaker 2: you can tap into the church, and you can receive
- 55:59Speaker 2: the hand of someone who's got it outreached to you
- 56:04Speaker 2: to help.
- 56:05Speaker 3: I always say baby steps, but you've got.
- 56:07Speaker 2: To you've got to want it. It's it's more than
- 56:12Speaker 2: you've just got to want it. You've got to want
- 56:14Speaker 2: it badly enough. It seems I'm I don't know, because
- 56:22Speaker 2: I've I'm not addicted to anything I've I've never experienced this.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Well.
- 56:32Speaker 4: I think it's also because I think it comes from caring.
- 56:38Speaker 4: You have to show them that somebody out there cares
- 56:40Speaker 4: when they've li were dying. Friday night, there was a
- 56:43Speaker 4: girl there. I know her, of course, I know how.
- 56:46Speaker 2: A lot of people, but you know everybody.
- 56:49Speaker 4: And she was sitting at the table eating. I sat
- 56:53Speaker 4: down next to her and we were talking. Then one
- 56:59Speaker 4: of the lay from the church came out and talk
- 57:01Speaker 4: to her, then one of the ladies from Turning Point.
- 57:05Speaker 3: So when they were done.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Talking, I started talking and she told me she doesn't
- 57:11Speaker 4: want to do it no more. I said, well, I
- 57:15Speaker 4: don't want you to do it anymore either. I said,
- 57:18Speaker 4: but you know, when you see me on the streets,
- 57:21Speaker 4: you can come talk to me. We'll find a way.
- 57:24Speaker 4: And I said, you know, I wasn't trying to be
- 57:28Speaker 4: a jerk. I said, I don't want you to be
- 57:31Speaker 4: a statistic I don't want to lose you. Next she
- 57:36Speaker 4: said she doesn't want to die, and that you know
- 57:41Speaker 4: I mean a lot of thing does touch my heart,
- 57:44Speaker 4: but at that moment, I felt like I was melting
- 57:46Speaker 4: in the chair.
- 57:49Speaker 3: I said, come to me, we'll talk.
- 57:53Speaker 2: How many how many friends have you lost? And how many?
- 57:57Speaker 2: How many people that?
- 57:59Speaker 4: Well, I know has been a lot of I'm not
- 58:02Speaker 4: sure the statistics, but I know turning point knows and
- 58:08Speaker 4: right at the moment, I've not personally, but fourteen.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Look at what we are seeing on social media, people
- 58:21Speaker 2: taking out their phones and videotaping locally, just the Barry
- 58:27Speaker 2: Barry Vermont Resident chat page alone.
- 58:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I'm on there.
- 58:31Speaker 2: People nodding off in their cars yep. Presumably as a
- 58:38Speaker 2: result of some drug use. Yeah, I mean that. You know,
- 58:46Speaker 2: we're seeing video of people stumbling around the zombie walk.
- 58:54Speaker 2: There's theft, there's desperation too to keep feeding the addiction,
- 59:09Speaker 2: and all of this stuff is interconnected. Yes, crime, drugs,
- 59:14Speaker 2: mental health, homelessness, and the list goes on.
- 59:17Speaker 3: But you know, I can also.
- 59:20Speaker 4: Understand everybody else's point of view that they're scared. You know,
- 59:28Speaker 4: I get scared sometimes, but I kind of like have
- 59:33Speaker 4: to kind of like put it aside or put it away,
- 59:36Speaker 4: you know, And I don't blame you know families for
- 59:42Speaker 4: being scared. You know, you have children, you have grandchildren,
- 59:47Speaker 4: you have yourself protect.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Are Burry City streets safe to walk?
- 59:57Speaker 4: To me it is, but maybe to a lot of others,
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: they do have that fear.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: And I don't blame him. You see it all the time, JD.
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: Like you said on media, you know, how is people
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: supposed to feel when they hear it on the street
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: that people are getting jacked.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: I just heard the other day that another kid that
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: Actually told me yesterday he got jacked, got punched in
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: the eye and the knife to his throat and they
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: stole his stuff just see if he had any drugs.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: He looked terrible.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: I checked his throat, I checked his eye and he
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: was okay, but he was very shaken out. So you know,
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: it's not just the homeless and the addiction that are
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: doing this out with businesses and families now they're jacking
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: each other.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: We hear about all of this aggressive panhandling around.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I know a few of them.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: What do you say to them?
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: Well, one of them said, oh guess right, Gino, I
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: made forty dollars just to say being on the street panhandling.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: I said, oh, really, I said, for what food?
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: And this person does this every day, asking people for
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: money and cigarettes, and I got to the point I stopped.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: You know, if you're out there panhandling money for drugs,
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: you're taking away and cigarettes.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Hey, I know you're a smoker.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: But it's like, you know, like I'm not being mean,
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: but it's also taken away from those that have to support.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Their own family and work hard, and work hard and
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: are often struggling quietly. Yes, hey, I struggle to put
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: gas in the car. I struggle, but you know, when
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: I keep it to myself. The only one I talked
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: to about my struggling list is heating Church. I don't
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: let anybody else know out there. I can't.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: I'm not gonna go out on the streets to feel
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: bad for myself because, you know what, I'm in a
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: good position right now.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: Let's help other people.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Have you seen some of these traveling gypsies?
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: I got hit up one day, said excuse me, ma'am.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: I'm like, what's up? You know, and he goes, you
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: get twenty dollar? I need uh get a toe toe
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: from my card. You know what I did. I looked
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: at him. I know who you are. Don't do that
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: to me because I'm not giving you money. And now
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: your story has been changing, and now he's got his
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: girlfriend doing the same thing. And I told him, I said,
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: don't ever approach me again.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: This guy I can't remember his name, but he's everywhere. Yes,
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: and I also can't remember who was with somebody video
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: tape to Yes. Yes, you know, be be vigilant, folks.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: You know, keep your eyes open.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: Keep your distance when you talk from the distance length.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: But I gave it to him. I told him, I
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: know who you are. You can't play it with me.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: What you say?
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: He goes, well, do you have all these fight all this,
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: and no, I just told you I know who you are.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: You can't play with gino. So I suggest you need
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: to walk away, buddy. Oh okay, but thank you ma'am.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: I'm like, come on, dude, you're ere here doing what
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: you're doing, but you're trying to be nice.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: And don't call me ma'am because I'll kick your ass. H.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: I'm not a man, right, I'll put you in a chokehold.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: But he was shocked when I put my finger at
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: him and said I know who you are. And the
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: thing was he goes, Oh, it's not me, it's Cabo.
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: As you know what, dude, Cabo has been in jail.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: Stop blaming him because you've been found, You've been seen,
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: people have seen you in videos.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: Why are you playing it?
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: I understand. Uh, Carlos Perez is out.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: I haven't seen him. I haven't seen him.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Did some time up in Saint Jay. There's an aggressive
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: panhandler right there. That's a bad dude.
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: You know what. I haven't seen him at all.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Interesting, and I'm out there every day j D maybe sometimes.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: Twice a day.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Do you know when Carbo's getting out?
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: No?
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: I don't.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: You haven't heard anything on the streets. No, when you do,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: will you let me know? Yeah, I would like to.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: I'd like to sit down with him again.
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: You know, I think. I hope and pray, Brandon, you
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: get out of jail. You already went through the withdrawals.
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: Keep it straight, buddy.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Sometimes thirty sixty ninety days.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: It's just zach rehab. Sorry what it is.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: But sometimes it's not enough. No, And sometimes coming up
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: out of jail just makes you want to purge, for
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: lack of a better term. Sometimes, sometimes, maybe more often
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: than not, I don't I don't know, never been in jail.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: I don't know me either.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: I imagine that jailpe No, you know, I think everything changed,
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: not everything. The day my son was born. I didn't
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: want to fight. I was a fighter, a runner, not anymore.
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: I can't if I go out and fight, take off
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: every time I have a problem. What is that showing
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: to the folks out there that I'm trying to help?
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: Ye I can't, you know.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: And it's to the point, you know, I'm going to
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: be fifty an't pretty soon here, and you know it's
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: time for me to just keep on putting my foot
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: down and say, Gino, you can look at the people
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: out there. And when I get a thought in my
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: head like that, you know what I do. I come
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: down street and look at elm the people my friends
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: are said with me. One of them girl two months,
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: no crack, and she feels a lot better.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Two months. Yeah, it's a long time.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: Now the guy a month got his job back. I
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: told him keep it up, because you know, Gino, I
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: will find you and kick your butt.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: I think it's remarkable that you're able to sit down
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: and have these conversations with folks that are struggling with life.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: So many of us are, and it's constant work, no
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: matter who you are, where you are, or what's going
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: on in your life.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: Hey, I struggle.
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: I struggle every day because I can go back and
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: be a be an attic again. But I you know,
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: my mind right now is focus on, of course, always
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: my son, heading church, being out there for people. What
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: would that say to them they see me now the
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: gino trying to help them, if they see me on
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: the streets messed up, Hey, let's follow gino. Hey, she's
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: our buddy. You know, I don't want to do that.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: I do not want to do that.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: How many years have you been cleaned?
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: No drugs, no pills?
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: Well yeah, because you know, like I said, I've been
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: to the hospital for and had my stomach pumped.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: And they made me drink chacoal those ever gave me.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: Have you ever odeite?
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: Yes, and that's why they had to pump my stomach. Okay,
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: but I heard they don't do that much anymore. But
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: I don't know. Like I said, when you're on the
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: streege and hear one thing and then you hear another thing,
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: you know, you just listen. You don't say, oh yeah, right,
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: you're wrong. Oh yeah, right, you don't do that, you know,
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: let him talk. Let them tell this story. If it's
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: true or not, does it really matter, Does it really matter?
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: Let them say what they want to say.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: It's their life, their story. I've had mine.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: It's what we need to do. Gino is listen more.
